Modi-Cong trade charges over Rafale PDA’s conduct in NLA rankles NPF Rafale jets could have delivered results: PM Modi responsible for delay in arrival of Rafale

KOHIMA, MAR 3 (NPN): Opposition members in the assembly have expressed resentment over the manner in which the ruling party members conducted themselves as well as the proceedings of the recently concluded budget session of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly from February 21-26. It may be recalled, that the opposition bench expressed total dissatisfaction with the curtailment of discussion time and how questions submitted were rejected in order to ensure that the session did not extend beyond February 26. It was also the first time that the opposition walked out of the house on three occasions during the session when their demands were rejected. On one occasion, they walked out in protest against a minister who was replying to question for another department. They felt it was not in consonance with the rules and procedures for conduct of the house. However, it may be recalled that the state’s Advocate General K.N.Balagopal had clarified that a minister can reply on

Tribals, Dalits call for Bharat bandh on Mar 5 NEW DELHI, MAR 3 (AGENCIES): Tribals across several states have called for Bharat Bandh on March 5 to protest against a recent Supreme Court order that might lead to “massscale evictions” of tribal and forest-dwelling families. According to Pragativadi, tribals in states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and other states in North East will lead the peaceful bandh. According to sources, the agitators will demonstrate against the apex court’s directive to evict more than 10 lakh indigenous people whose land claims were rejected. Tribals will demand that the government brings forth an ordinance immediately to protect their rights, as stated in the Forest Rights Act. Notably, in a significant order, the Supreme Court on February 13 ordered the eviction of over 10 lakh tribals and other traditional forest dwellers from forest lands across 16 Indian states. The move came after the Central Government failed to defend the Forest Rights Act, which protects their rights. The written order was released on February 20.

behalf of another department if authorised by the leader of the house. On another occasion, the opposition members walked out when the draft resolution for Citizens Amendment Bill was tabled by the leader of the house. The opposition NPF members were also irked by what they termed as casual response from the treasury bench to one of the question raised by Dr. Chumben Murry. The member had asked the minister-in-charge of NPWD on the percentage of work completed in the on-going rehabilitation and up-gradation of Wokha Merapani road and when the project will be completed. Instead of providing the detailed statistic, the response was that the project was taken up under NEC under North East Sector Development Scheme (NERSDS) and implemented by NHIDCL. Again when it was asked if there was any complaint against improper execution of works and if so what the department of R&B done on the matter and whether any rectification was done by the contractor? To this, the answer was a

shocking “Same as Sl. No.1 reply”. Dr. Murry on being contacted, said the replies showed that either the department did not know English or took the opposition members for fools since he did not want to know under which scheme it was implemented. Dr. Murry said he was astounded by the level of irresponsibility exhibited by the department and the minister-in-charge and the cavalier manner in which the ruling party members acted. Leader of Opposition T.R Zeliang had also repeated raised the issue on Aspirational District Kiphire regarding delay in releasing the Rs.1 crore that was mentioned in the governor’s address. NPF members alleged that in his reply, the Leader of the House did not mention anything about the points raised. It was reported that Kiphire DBDP revealed that the district has not received any amount until February 20. NPF member C.L John said he was irked by the cavalier manner in which the ruling party members exhibited while replying to questions and preventing op-

position from raising further queries. Opposition member Kuzholuzo (Azo) Neinu also flayed the ruling party for evading his demand on the government to substantiate the claim of having generated Rs. 62.88 crores during the 10 day festival 2018 besides creating 8715 jobs. Azo also told this correspondent that poor attendance of the AHoDs and HoDs during the five-day session was disappointing and quite condemnable. He had also raised this issue on the floor of the house. Azo also expressed dissatisfaction over the resolution on CAB where government went ahead without considering the views of the opposition. He said since the opposition party was the single largest their views would have to be considered. Further, he pointed out that rejection of both starred and unstarred questions by the ruling party was a violation of the assembly rules and procedures. The opposition was expecting that the session would be extended in order to deliberate on crucial issues but that was not to be.

NEW DELHI, MAR 3 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hit out at the opposition for doubting the armed forces on the anti-terror air strike in Pakistan and said the country is feeling the absence of Rafale fighter jets as the results could have been different if India had these aircraft. He said the country has seen the influence of India’s foreign policy after the release of Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman by Pakistan within three days of his capture. Modi took on the Opposition over the issue of air strike, saying while the entire world stood behind India in its fight against terror, (Cont’d on p-11) some parties in the country

4 coal miners die in Longleng mine GUWAHATI, MAR 3 (AGENCIES): Four coal miners died at an illegal mine in Longleng district, Nagaland, The New India Express report stated. Official sources said the persons died in a mudslide. However, some sought to suggest that the victims died after inhaling toxic gas. The deaths occurred at Yonglok village on the AssamNagaland border on Saturday. The victims hailed from Assam. Three of them were identified as Krishna Gogoi, Tutu Neog and one Dhaneswar. The fourth was yet to be identified. “According to a report that I received, the deaths were not caused by toxic gas. They (victims) had gone to the open mine, where they worked earlier, to collect their belongings as it has suspended mining activities. It was then that the mudslide occurred and it took their lives. However, I am awaiting a detailed report from my officers,” Longleng DC, John Tsulise Sangtam, told this correspondent.

Narendra Modi

The official also said that illegal mining activities had stopped everywhere in Nagaland as the state government issued a ban last month. Later, the four victims went back home and they returned to collect their belongings, he said. According to him, incessant rainfall, which occurred in Longleng district for about a week till Saturday, might have triggered the mudslide. Following the tragedy, the bodies of the victims were taken away to Assam by their families. “The families took away the bodies. They refused the conduct of post-mortem. After obtaining certificates from the families, the bodies were delivered,” the DC added. The incident is a grim reminder of the December 13 tragedy at an illegal rat-hole coalmine in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills in which at least 15 miners died. So far, only two bodies could be retrieved. Efforts are on to retrieve the remaining bodies.

Rahul Gandhi

Congress president Rahul Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being “solely responsible” for the delay in the arrival of Rafale jets. “Dear PM, Have you no shame at all? YOU stole 30,000 Crore and gave it to your friend Anil. YOU are solely responsible for the delay in the arrival of the RAFALE jets,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted on Saturday. “YOU are WHY brave IAF pilots like Wing Cdr. Abhinandan, are risking their lives flying outdated jets,” Gandhi said on Twitter. Cong ress Sunday claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has himself “questioned” the recent anti-terror air strike in Pakistan by his remarks

that the country is feeling the absence of Rafale fighter jets as the results could have been different if India had these aircraft. The party also said it had neither sought proof of such strike earlier nor is it asking for it now. “The PM has himself questioned the air strike. He said had the Rafale jets been there (with the IAF), the results would have been different. What is the meaning of this?” Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari posed during a press conference here. Asserting that Modi should himself explain what would have been different with Rafale jets, he held Modi responsible for the delay in induction of the French-made fighter jets into the IAF by “cancelling” the earlier negotiations. The Congress also hit out at Modi alleging that the country witnessed his “monologue, fake bravado and narcissistic lies”. Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the prime minister is obsessed with one word-- ‘Modi’ -- and forgets that India is a thriving democracy of 132 crore people with a multitude of opinions.

CCSU threatens to Ikiesingram, Beisumpuloa GBs appeal lock DEO, SDEO offices to NSCN (I-M) and AR to resolve issues DIMAPUR, MAR 3 (NPN): Confederation of Chang Students’ Union (CCSU) has threatened to lock offices of district education officer (DEO) and sub-divisional education officer (SDEO) at Tuensang from Monday till its demand was not met. In a statement, confederation’s vice president WB Mongko and general secretary C Pongsu explained that they were forced to resort to such a step as the ultimatum served to the department concerned went unanswered till date. CCSU said it had submitted a representation on November 28, 2017 and an ultimatum on February 5 this year with a 10-day deadline seeking retention of downgraded Chingmei Government High School (GHS) and Noksen GHS. The union questioned the government what preventive measures it had taken to avoid downgrading Chingmei GHS, which was running without a subject teacher since its upgrade in 1998, and Noksen GHS that too was functioning without the required number of teachers. CCSU claimed that, as per records, both the GHS were running without proper headmaster and assistant headmaster. The Union further claimed that Noksen GHS recorded 50% pass percentage in 2018 HSLC exam after its initiative.

Prez nod to ordinance for voluntary use of Aadhaar NEW DELHI, MAR 3 (PTI): President Ram Nath Kovind has given his assent to an ordinance that allows voluntary use of Aadhaar as ID proof for obtaining mobile SIM cards and opening bank accounts. The ordinance -- necessitated because the Rajya Sabha could not approve a Bill after its passage by the Lok Sabha -- was promulgated on Saturday. Last week, the Cabinet approved the promulgation of an ordinance to give effect to changes proposed in Aadhaar and two others legislations. The amendments provide for stiff penalties for violation of norms set for the use of Aadhaar and violation of privacy. It bans storing of core biometric information as well as Aadhaar number by service providers in cases of individuals who have voluntarily offered the na-

He also hit out at his detractors, saying they are free to criticise him but their anti-Modi tirade should not harm the country’s security interests and help terrorists such as Masood Azhar and Hafiz Saeed. “India is feeling the absence of Rafale. The entire country is saying in one voice today, if we had Rafale probably the result would have been different. “The country has suffered a lot due to selfish interests earlier and now politics over Rafale,” he said at the India Today Conclave. “I want to ask these people whether they trust the capability of our armed forces or doubt it… A person like Modi will come and go, but India will remain… I want to tell such people that they are free to oppose Modi and point out shortcomings in government’s working, but do not help those harbouring terrorism. He said that India’s unity has scared many within the country and outside. He said there was fear in the neighbouring country of the bravery and valour of Indian armed forces and it was good to learn that.

5 Hi-tech surveillance system to PRC issue: Family M’laya: UDP to form EC with customary NPP in KHADC and JHADC be introduced in B’desh border wants punishment Agartala, Mar 3 (IANS): After the western front, laser walls and other hi-tech surveillance systems would be put in place in India’s eastern border with Bangladesh to bolster security, top BSF official said. “Under the Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS), laser walls, sensors, closed circuit television, high-power camera among other hi-tech surveillance system would be introduced along India-Bangladesh borders,” Hemant Kumar Lohia, who till recently was the Inspector General of BSF’s Tripura Frontier and is currently with the Eastern Command of the force in Kolkata, told IANS “The signals from the various elements of the CIBMS would reach a Unified Command and Control Centre to enable the BSF monitor the border on realtime basis. The CIBMS enables round-the-clock surveillance in different weather conditions or even in duststorms, fog or rain,” Lohia added. Lohia said that the CIBMS, also known as a virtual fence, would create an invisible electronic barrier on land, water and in the air. “The CIBMS is designed to guard stretches where physical surveillance is extremely hard either due to inhospitable terrain or riverine stretches,” he pointed out. “Initially, the system

would be set up in critical areas of Assam’s Dhubri district and some portion of Tripura,” he said, adding this would help control infiltration and other incidents on the border. Lohia said Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had on September 17 last year launched two pilot projects of the CIBMS, each covering a 5.5 km stretch along the IndiaPakistan border in Jammu. The use of high-tech solutions for border security is being considered by the Home Ministry since 2012. The BSF had also submitted a detailed report on CIBMS to the ministry. “But after the discovery of several cross-border tunnels on the western frontier, the ministry swiftly approved two pilot projects,” another BSF officer told IANS, declining to be quoted as he is not authorised to speak to the media. According to the officer, BSF troopers, during their patrolling, now use night vision goggles, weapon sights and handheld searchlights, among other equipment. “With the increase of the cross-border threats, the BSF was forced to embark on a high-tech modernisation process,” the officer pointed out. According to the official, besides employing high-tech technologies, the BSF continues to deploy its sniffer dogs for surveillance.

I tanag a r , M a r 3 (AGENCIES): The agitation in Arunachal Pradesh pertaining to the PRC that claimed four lives may have temporarily halted but the families of the deceased are yet to recover from the trauma of the loss of their loves ones. According to The Northeast Today, the family of Risso Tari, one of the victims who died while agitating against the PRC on Saturday demanded handing over the police or paramilitary person responsible for Tari’s death to the family members before March 9, in order to punish the official “as per the Nyishi customary law.” Tari’s older brother, Risso Kiagung while addressing reporters said the family “does not want the compensation of Rs 20 lakhs and government job as announced by the state government.” “With no other option, we are also going back to our customary law. The Nyishi customary law says tooth for tooth, nail for nail. And it is definitely for revenge purpose. We are only demanding that the state government and the bandh callers produce the person who has killed our brother, so that we can punish them as per the customary law,” Tari’s brother-in-law, Khyoda Ajing added. Kiagung also urged the people not to give a political colour to the situation, and said the family would fight for justice.

IMPHAL, Mar 3: Highlighting various achievements of his government, chief minister N Biren Singh Sunday claimed that Manipur will become one of the most advanced States in the country if the BJP-led government rules the state for 10 years. The chief minister said this while addressing a public function after a series of inaugurations and laying of foundation stones for various developmental projects in Imphal West district. Singh said that the prime objective of his government was to eradicate poverty and maintain equality in the state. “Earlier and past systems of governance and administration should be rectified and changed to achieve this objective,” he said. With the launching of Chief Ministergi Hakshelgi Tengbang and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (Ayushman Bharat), Biren claimed that the government was able to wipe off the tears of thousands of needy people, who had been unable to get health treatment due to poverty. “It won’t be wrong to say that the state has witnessed a huge developmental change in the past two years,” Singh said. People used to wait for government officers and staff in different offices earlier. Now, these government employees come on their own to the doorsteps of people to help them after the launching of the ‘Go to Village’ mission, he said. The chief minister also said that students would now get modern quality and free education in government schools under the “School Fagat Hansi” mission. Maintaining that the incumbent gover nment translated into work what it had promised, the chief minister cited the examples of construction of women’s markets in hill districts, revamping of the Imphal-Jiri road and Imphal-Moreh road, launching of helicopter services and revival of the Manipur State Transport.

posts in the KHADC. When asked if the UDP would demand for the CEM post in the KHADC since the NPP is leading the EC in the JHADC, he said there is no discussion so far on who would be the new CEM in the KHADC even though admitting there are many contenders for the post. It may mentioned that two former MLAs of UDPPaul Lyngdoh who won from Jaiaw constituency and Titosstarwell Chyne who won from Sohra constituency as well as former CEM and NPP candidate, Pynshngain N Syiem who won from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah constituency are the front runners for the CEM post in KHADC. He also said that the one independent MDC has joined UDP and they are expecting to also have the support of HSPDP since they are part of Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA). Reacting to a query about the proposal of Congress to align with them, he said that the party prefers uniformity as the UDP has a Government with NPP at the state level and therefore they would not like to have a different combination. The UDP party president also admitted that one of the factors for the average performance of the UDP in the elections is that the party does not have enough funds to mobilize its resources

Manipulated polls

M

ost opinion polls in the national media, especially the electronic segment, claim that their polls show the level of popularity among various political leaders or preferences among public for political leaders. Most people who are ignorant about poll surveys would tend to accept them as fiat accompli. With the high stake 2019 parliamentary election just round the corner, public opinion polls now play an important role in politics. They are used throughout the course of election campaigns by candidates and by the media to see which candidates are ahead and who is likely to emerge victorious. Most importantly, revolving the issue around who is the most acceptable politician to lead the country. The results of these polls, in turn, largely determine where future campaign monies are to be spent and where each candidate’s efforts will be concentrated until the close of the campaign. However, the question is - can these polls really be trusted? It is time to put such polls in their place because of their past records. In the worst of scenarios, the slightly better readings are the exit polls and not pre-poll surveys. This is highlighted by 2004 pre-poll surveys for the parliamentary elections, where almost all polls carried by media suggested the NDA under Vajpayee would be the single largest party and likely to retain power. These polls are commissioned by that particular media company then heavily publicised. In doing so, the media often increase the name recognition of whichever candidate is in the lead. As a result, that candidate becomes even more well known and gets an extra boost the next time people are surveyed. For instance in the US presidential elections, Donald Trump was polling at 2% before he announced his candidacy. Immediately afterward (while the media was dedicating 20% to 30% of candidacy headlines to one candidate) his support jumped to 11%. The US media had tried to go by the perception that Hillary was winning hands down and so, it was the safest bet to ignore Trump. Like the reason why just about everyone failed to predict Trump’s astronomical rise, in India too journalists somehow do not see any other leader other than Modi as the most popular leader. That’s not just because the methodology of polling is itself flawed (more on that below), it’s also because the analysis is affected by the humans conducting it. Humans, flawed as they are, produce polls that are imperfectly designed, imperfectly conducted and imperfectly analyzed by imperfect people. Polls are not a crystal ball but (at best) a decent snapshot of now. Even the wording of polls reflects this focus on the present rather than the future: “If the election were today, for whom would you vote?”. Polls are mainly conducted through mobile phones. However, the respondents are already known to the pollster/media reporter and quite obviously would tend to follow the reports carried. In a highly competitive environment, there is also the spectre of money being paid to the respondents. Some prominent electronic media are manipulating the methodology to suit the demands of the day. Even in the 2004 elections, there was no competition between veteran L.K.Advani and Sonia Gandhi and which the media hyped over. Not that Sonia was anywhere near the stature of Advani in terms of experience and capability but then, the people are the ones to choose and not the poll surveys.

DailyDevotion His Commission to Us Feed My sheep. —John 21:17 This is love in the making. The love of God is not created— it is His nature. When we receive the life of Christ through the Holy Spirit, He unites us with God so that His love is demonstrated in us. The goal of the indwelling Holy Spirit is not just to unite us with God, but to do it in such a way that we will be one with the Father in exactly the same way Jesus was. And what kind of oneness did Jesus Christ have with the Father? He had such a oneness with the Father that He was obedient when His Father sent Him down here to be poured out for us. And He says to us, “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you” (John 20:21). Peter now realizes that he does love Him, due to the revelation that came with the Lord’s piercing question. The Lord’s next point is— “Pour yourself out. Don’t testify about how much you love Me and don’t talk about the wonderful revelation you have had, just ‘Feed My sheep.’ ” Jesus has some extraordinarily peculiar sheep: some that are unkempt and dirty, some that are awkward or pushy, and some that have gone astray! But it is impossible to exhaust God’s love, and it is impossible to exhaust my love if it flows from the Spirit of God within me. The love of God pays no attention to my prejudices caused by my natural individuality. If I love my Lord, I have no business being guided by natural emotions— I have to feed His sheep. We will not be delivered or released from His commission to us. Beware of counterfeiting the love of God by following your own natural human emotions, sympathies, or understandings. That will only serve to revile and abuse the true love of God.

oming out of the womb of Indian subcontinent or Bharatmata both the neighbours have tested that if one could slap, the other could hit back with fisticuffs. The result the people loses and leaders rejoice. Playing Little Singham is the cheapest way of releasing energy and keep cool for many new generation kids. Usually it does not have a cost except for some bruises and then happily again play together. Wish nations also could master that art. Nations are not let off with that ease. It has a cost on nation’s ego, fancy of leaders, societal jingoism, and targeted violence against “real” enemies living next door and of course the military ops, which are not imaginary. And wars are led by vested interests. All nations thrive on some kind of patriotism and veiled jingoism. The lovehate relationship between India and Pakistan for continuing the 1947 partition mindset has huge costs on both the nations. Yes, the two-day war games have inflicted – for the satisfaction of all Indians – a heavy cost on Pakistan as it loses fighter jet. An F-16 today costs not less than $ 15 million. The cost of

Sub-continent fights Singham war flying 20 aircraft to India and dropping/losing bombs, closing airspace, heightened security and convincing its people is an approximate $ 500 million. It should not bring smiles. The cost for India is higher as MiG is crashed. A MiG-21 is said to have crossed a whopping $ 25.1 million dollars. Coordinated flights from different bases far off the borders, stealth movements, closing of at least nine airports, detour for commercial planes because of closure of Pakistani air space, the cost of sophisticated bombs, heightened security double that Pakistan would have spent. A trained pilot is injured and captured by the “enemy”. Good the enemy prime minister Imran Khan despite some unsavoury comments decides to return him with dignity. It showed jingoism could cost the sobriety of an international player. This does not include the cost of losing Mi 17 copter, which was supposedly not on a “war” sortie and killed six Indian Air Force personnel and a civilian in Budgaon in J&K. The copter itself costs $ 16 to 18 million to US army. Lives are invaluable but the cost to families cannot be fathomed. The emotional

loss to the nation can never be calculated. Coming out of the womb of Indian sub-continent or Bharatmata both the neighbours have tested that if one could slap, the other could hit back with fisticuffs. The result - the people loses and leaders rejoice. Rulers and their rival opposition feel happy as they shoot barbs with the impending elections in mind. The Shivaji actual cost is heavier as the Atalji’s bus and Samjhauta Express, trade and many “normal” is stopped. The cost of resumption, which may be sooner than later, would be higher as diplomats, security and civilian officials fly to each other’s territories for renegotiations and re-demarcations. Don’t forget it would also have a cost on the media as they also deploy their teams to start a “new normal” This all at a time, when both the neighbours are striving to keep floating their economies as GDP continues to plummet. India and Pakistan suffered more beyond the 1965 and 1971 battlefields. Both the nations had suffered high inflation, famine deaths and other losses. The political costs were heavier

for Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Indira Gandhi despite they being the finest leaders of the Indian subcontinent. Pakistan did not calculate the cost of Bhutto’s 1000-year war cry. That led Pakistan into the trap of terrorists – first it promoted Khalistan, that bled itself as also India leading to Indira Gandhi’s assassination and then Islamic outfits for the last over 30 Sarkar years. It has disturbed world peace and led to Afghanistan, Iraq and Arab wars. Pakistan is responsible for the disturbed peace in Asia. The inflicted cost for India, if the war continues, estimated at modest level is Rs 27 crore per hour, as per Shekhar Gupta in India today fortnightly. A 1000 hour or 41.6 day war would cost India Rs 27,000 crore if India wins, according to Gupta. The actual military estimation would be far higher. And after all such expenses, the target – arms, drugs, human traffickers and money launderers – would go unscathed as apparently the IAF bombings in Balakot in Pak-administered-J&K has done. The 300 deaths claimed heightened passion but IAF could not vouch for it. Nation

Post-mortem

Perpetuality of the seventh day Sabbath

M

honjan Lotha’s Sabbath and Sunday write-up appeared in Nagaland Post on Feb. 23, 2019, is impregnated with some significant Sabbatical questions that invite biblical perspectives. Quoting Romans 14:5, which reads, “One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should fully convince in his own mind” (Romans 14: 5) Mhonjan wrote, “The Scriptures make it clear that for Christians Sabbath keeping is a matter of spiritual freedom, not a command from God.” Response: To understand Paul’s context of Romans 14:5, we may also read Galatians 4:10, 11-- “You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you.” In both the cases, Paul was dealing with the “aspects of Mosaic Law and the Jewish tradition” which were often controversial among the new Christians, not with the Seventh day Sabbath of the Ten Commandments which was written by God’s own finger (Exodus 31:18). Unlike the ceremonial Sabbaths such as the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 23:32) that were symbols or shadows of things to come and ended at the cross (Col 2:16), the 4th commandment of the Decalogue, “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy…” (Exo 20:8) is a command from God for Christians as much as the other 9 of the Decalogue are. Jesus kept the Seventh day Sabbath (Luke 4:16; Matt 24:20) during His earthly life, and His followers did the same even after the cross (Read Luke 23:56; Acts 17:2, 18:4, etc); this Sabbath observance will go on even in the new heavens and new earth which God will make (Isaiah 66:22, 23). “In Exodus 20:8-11, Sabbath command was to do no work on the Sabbath day. Nowhere in the scripture is the Sabbath day commanded to be the day of worship.” Response: “…in it you shall not do any work” is in verse 10 of Exodus 20. But passage begins with “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.” Does keeping a day connote merely idleness or no work? How do people keep Sunday? Leviticus 23:3 “Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation. Is not this a call to worship on the Sabbath day? Jesus, too, kept the Sabbath and went to the Synagogue and read the Scriptures (Luke 4:16). At the Jerusalem Council, the apostles told the Gentile Christians only “to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood.” Acts 15:20. Sab-

bath was never mentioned in that council. Response: Does “never mentioned” of the Sabbath observance in that Jerusalem council indicate abolition of the 4th commandment of the Decalogue? What about the rest of the commandments that were not mentioned there? “Thou shall have no other gods” is still binding even though the council did not mention. The reason why the council did not deal with the Sabbath was that it was not a controversial subject— God’s people kept the Seventh day Sabbath before and after the cross as pointed out earlier from the scriptures. “In the book of Acts whenever a meeting is said to be on Sabbath, it is a meeting of the Jews not Christians.” Response: The following texts show that both the Jews and Gentiles met on Sabbath day in the Synagogue, and sometimes in nature. Acts 18: 4 Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks. Acts 13: 44, 45 —“On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and talked abusively against what Paul was saying.” Acts 13:14, 16--From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch. On the Sabbath they entered the synagogue and sat down. Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said: “Men of Israel and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! Acts 16:13 On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. Was the Seventh day Sabbath only for the Jews? Response: “The Sabbath was made for man” (Mark 2:27), not only for the Jews. Ceremonial Sabbaths that were instituted during Moses’ time to teach God’s OT people about the coming Messiah, ended at the cross. But the Seventh day Sabbath was rested upon, blessed, and made holy by God Himself (Gen 2:2, 3) in the prelapsarian period in Eden Garden, more than 2000 years before Jewish nation existed. Therefore it cannot be only “Jewish Sabbath” but “the Sabbath of the Lord” for all. “If there was a day that Christians met regularly it was the first day of the week, i e, Sunday, not the Sabbath day (Saturday).” Response: The New Testament Bible mentions the first day of the week (Sunday) only 8 times. They are mentioned in connection with Jesus’ resurrection and Paul’s missionary events. None of these Sunday texts in the New Testament tells it was a day of worship for Christians. But Bible clearly indicates Jesus’ fol-

lowers kept the Sabbath according to the commandments even after the cross. The Seventh day Sabbath is the only weekly holy day in both testaments. Moreover, can any man make a day holy if God does not? Sunday worship came into the Church after the New Testament was written. Listen to what some sincere Christians say: “The first four commandments set forth man’s obligations directly toward God.... The fourth commandment sets forth God’s claim on man’s time and thought.... Not one of the ten words [commandments] is of merely racial significance.... The Sabbath was established originally [long before Moses] in no special connection with the Hebrews, but as an institution for all mankind, in commemoration of God’s rest after six days of creation. It was designed for all the descendants of Adam.” —Adult Quarterly, Southern Baptist Convention series, Aug. 15, 1937. “There was and is a commandment to keep holy the Sabbath day, but that Sabbath day was not Sunday.... It will be said however, and with some show of triumph, that the Sabbath was transferred from the seventh to the first day of the week.... Where can the record of such a transaction be found? Not in the New Testament - absolutely not. There is no scriptural evidence of the change of the Sabbath institution from the seventh to the first day of the week. “To me [it] seems unaccountable that Jesus, during three years’ intercourse with His disciples, often conversing with them upon the Sabbath question.... never alluded to any transference of the day; also that during forty days of His resurrection life, no such thing was intimated. “Of course, I quite well know that Sunday did come into use in early Christian history as a religious day, as we learn from the Christian Fathers and other sources. But what a pity that it comes branded with the mark of paganism, and christened with the name of the sun god, when adopted and sanctioned by the papal apostasy, and bequeathed as a sacred legacy to Protestantism!” —Dr. Edward T. Hiscox, author of The Baptist Manual in a paper read before New York ministers’ conference held Nov. 13, 1893. Many practices and doctrines that are not biblical have crept into the Christian Church in the early centuries. Jesus is coming soon. There is a call to reexamine the present practices and teachings in light of the Bible and Bible alone. Millions are responding to this call. Will you? can neither thrive on passion nor on emotion. The worst is the unrestrained cacophony of undertrained TV channels and social media. A “patriotic” media conceals more, an IIMC study on Kargil in1999 testify. The 2014 was watershed for Indian democracy. Aspirations were high even in the Kashmir valley. Hurriyat was sulking. The finest decision of BJP and PDP coming together to form government raised hopes. But the hopes were belied as there was more dependence on brute force and pellet guns. Non-negotiation was boasted as signal of strong governance. It was not different from what the Congress unfortunately did for long. The Valley people were dismayed. Hurriyat once again came back to centrestage. The nation has lost an opportunity of assimilating its own people. That is the folly. Neither India nor Pakistan could come out yet of the 1947 failed mindset. Communal harmony of Mahatma Gandhi, then a bold initiative against Jinnah’s two-religiontwo-nation theory, did not succeed in the next seven decades. Jinnah’s own Pakistan

was split as it was found religion does not bind people. Unfortunately against basic concept of secular Hindu tolerance and assimilation, a “rabid” Hindu emerged. Non-Hindus became targets of distrust. Cow vigilantism today is dividing the core Hindu rural farmers as the stray cattle rummage their corps. The nation assimilates. Outburst of emotions distance, if not divide, its people. The Hindus have the capacity to lead and make this nation the wonder of the world. They are good at heart and can take lead to assimilate not only different religious denominations within but beyond borders, even in Pakistan. It is the land of Buddha, who had transformed large parts of Asia. The Singham war must start process of assimilating the people of the sub-continent or Akhand Bharat. That would be the real war beyond borders against the terror mafia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has dynamism. he Centre on 30 Dec 18 extended the AFSPA in Nagaland for six more months till July 2019, contending that the whole state is in such ‘disturbed and dangerous’ condition wherein killings, loot and extortion is rampant. However, it is not on the whims and fancies of the Centre, for it is mandatory as per Section (3) of the AFSPA to seek the recommendation of the state government. With the state government equally involved, for its enforcement/extension, I for one can say that it is not as draconian an Act as is framed to be. With talks in place for revoking of AFSPA from Nagaland, it may have come as a surprise to many when the Home Ministry notified that, an officer of the rank corresponding to that of the lowest rank of the Assam Rifles deployed along the Indo-Myanmar border would, under the Code of Criminal Procedure, be given powers to arrest anyone or search a place without warrant. Unassumingly and for whatever mileage unknown, the news was quashed even before it could disseminate down for the knowledge of all. But there was no mention of provisions other than Section 41 and 47 of the CrPC, which should create a fuss. Even if it was enforced, the provision was never intended to apply for the entire area of Nagaland, other than the Border areas and taking cognizance of the porous nature of the Border areas, I felt is justifiable. Abuse of authority is negligible, now that social media is overtly proactive and accountable. Besides, its enforcement would have been a big step towards empowering our jawans/mahila soldiers, who in time would have gauged the sanctity and implications of their judgement and in the near future transformed the officer centric detailed order of command. An environment with weak security parameters is bound to give rise to law and order problems with

people taking matters in their own hands. For the very reason, security as a topic should be outside the purview of opinions and questions? It can never be an agenda to be discussed or debated upon. Assumingly, it is sidelined by individual, society, institutions and organizations alike without considering its essence and stakes. Regrettably, security implications and repercussions are taken cognizance of only when one gets embroiled in circumstances wherein a second chance may not always come by. Security institutions taken for granted losses its relevance. Spare the rod and spoil the child, even in our very homes, the effect of politeness and persuasion does not always drive home the desired lesson. Besides, there are factors which cannot be handled by civil authority and we need to give the Security Force that much due. We unnecessarily get perturbed or inconvenienced during occasion of spot questioning or vehicle check carried out by security personnel. But security, more than an individual purview, is a matter of general interests. Let us ask ourselves honestly whether we have ever been unnecessarily harassed, questioned or detained or have our homes ever been ransacked for no reason or rhymes? Times have changed and so have situations and outlook. We have to understand that our brothers and sisters in uniform are exposed to risk as much as we are and there is nothing wrong if provisions that cater for their safety is promulgated. Instead, we must attempt at working hand in hand to bring about a congenial and safer habitat. With insurgency and security related incidents reducing, even if the AFSPA does not get revoked in totality, certain clauses are bound to get repealed. But, until then, honouring the provisions of AFSPA is a duty and less of choice. Khumlamo Patton, Akuk Village, Wokha, (vinpatton@ yahoo.co.in)

Sir,

CAB vis-a-vis Article 371 (A) etc

CAB would have been a reality had there not been a strong opposition from native Assamese. People of Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram did not show intense protest because the Garos, Khasis, Jantias and Mizo Governments have an un holy alliance with BJP and ceding from BJP would be too expensive. In Nagaland, the anger displayed by the Christians was just symbolic. The Naga political leaders had played Hide & Seek politics because they cannot afford to break their romantic honeymoon with BJP. The core theme of BJP is to ultimately convert India into HINDUSTAN-Land exclusively for Hindus. In the book of BJP- RSS there is no mention of Christians, Muslims and other minorities. So, either they fall in line with Hindus or get lost. As of now the BJP-RSS are maintaining low profile on the issue of Hindutva. But as soon as they come to power in 2019 National Elections, they will raise their ugly head of CAB and devour NorthEast people and Kashmiris The State political Leaders are orchestrating Article 371 A, BEFR, 16TH Point Agreement etc as shields but it is simply a weak protective umbrella. The BJP-RSS have no regard for special provisions of Indian Constitutions. If they return in power in 2019 parliamentary Election, the gigantic elephants of Modi and Amit shah will trample all special provisions of Indian Constitution that safeguards the Nagas and Kashmiris. For now, let’s learnt a good lesson for planting BJP MLAs in the so called Christian Pioneering and advanced areas of Aos, Semas and Lothas. It won’t be surprised if the Angamis follow suit in the next Assembly Election. Neikuosa Angami, Kohima Town

NEW DELHI, Mar 3 (PTI): Unauthorised surcharging and high MDR charges are some of the reasons for impeding growth and sustenance of digital payments despite all efforts to promote it, according to a study. “This is, inter alia, due to the distortionary pricing of payment products (i e MDR) and the continued fraudulent practice of surcharging by acquirer banks and big merchants.” “Small/medium merchants on the one hand and customers on the other hand are losing out, hindering the government’s intent of broad basing digital payments,” as per the study done by IIT Mumbai. Before that it had announced a Hyderabad-Jeddah connection effective from March 25, 2019. Currently, SpiceJet operates to eight international destinations. We have also ordered 50 Q400s.” Currently, the airline connects its network with a fleet of 48 Boeing 737 MAX and NG jets, 27 Bombardier Q-400s and one B737 freighter. On Q3 results, Singh said: “Despite the huge cost escalation in ATF and exchange rate, SpiceJet has done remarkably well due to superior revenue performance, tight control on other costs.” “The strong improvement in the macro cost environment and the increasing induction of the fuel efficient MAX aircraft, the outlook looks stronger than it has over the past year.” The frill-free passenger carrier had posted a net profit of Rs 55.1 crore for the quarter ended on December 31, 2018. The standalone net profit for the same period last fiscal was Rs 240 crore.

The question still would be how does it serve every single customer with timely doorstep delivery, proper returns, refunds, fight fake products etc., to take pole position in the e-commerce market. The acquisition of Grab a Grub is likely to help Reliance with those last mile delivery challenges apart from C-Square software solution and Reverie that allows businesses to connect with their customers in local languages. “The aforesaid investment will further augment the group’s digital commerce initiatives and strengthen its logistics services, catering to both B2B and B2C segments,” PTI quoted Reliance as saying. Reliance will further invest up to Rs 40 crore in Grab a Grub while its total investment will translate into 83 per cent of equity capital in the startup, Reliance said in the filing. India’s e-commerce market is expected to grow to $150 billion by 2022, said a report by Nasscom and consulting firm PwC India.

SpiceJet plans aggressive international, regional expansion

New Delhi, Mar 3 (IANS): Budget passenger carrier SpiceJet plans to aggressively expand its international networks to fly out of the low fare and high fuel price operating environment. According to SpiceJet’s CMD Ajay Singh, the airline plans to aggressively deploy its new 737Max aircraft on international mediumhaul routes. The airline is prospecting destinations in China and CIS countries. Speaking exclusively to IANS here, Singh said: “More new destinations will be announced soon. We are looking at destinations in China and the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States).” “We are getting the 737Max aircraft which is 14 per cent more fuel efficient. It can fly 20 per cent more than other planes. This will help us in adding a few more international destinations; we will decide on them after a market study is completed,” he said adding that destinations like Singapore

Market experts have said that Reliance has the necessary wherewithal to take on Amazon and Walmart but it has to be with cautious optimism. “Reliance has an ecosystem of entertainment, financial services, payment gateway, etc. Once it has customers hooked on to these services, then it is a question of time before it can start offering merchandise as well,” Arvind Singhal, chairman and managing director at retail consultancy firm Technopak told Financial Express Online earlier. Moreover, Ambani doesn’t have to bother about long-term losses. Reliance Industries reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 9,459 crore in the quarter ended June last year. “Retail sector operates between 3-5% of profit and Reliance has been able to maintain that profit. Nobody would have thought that they would pull off something like Jio,” said Naresh T Raisinghani, CEO and Executive Director at India division of global consulting firm

New Delhi, Mar 3 (Agencies): Asia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani has acquired startups in last-mile logistics, software even as it prepares to take on Amazon and Walmartowned Flipkart in India’s hypercompetitive e-commerce market. Last month, Reliance had acquired three startups. According to Financial Express, business magnate Mukesh Ambani seems to be developing a penchant for partnering with startups. Textile-to-telecom giant Reliance Industries has now entered into agreements to acquire two startups, first, last mile logistics delivery service Grab A Grub and second, software services firm C-Square Info Solutions. Around a week back, it had entered into agreements to acquire three startups – language localisation technology platform Reverie Language Technologies, software-as-a-service startup Easygov, software simulation services company SankhyaSutra Labs, according to regulatory filings and media reports.

The report “Infrastructure & Real Estate: A fulcrum for Change & Economic Growth” by Property consultant ANAROCK and Association of Infrastructure Industry (India) said the government should accord high priority to the infra sector. It said India’s vision to enter the $ 5 trillion club economy by 2025 depends on the development of infrastructure and real estate that contribute 29.5 per cent to the GDP. “The sheer impact of challenges faced by the infrastructure projects is visible from these statistics - of the total 1,420 projects under implementation, 369 projects are facing time overruns to the tune of Rs 3.38 trillion of cost overrun and an average time of 46 months for 366 delayed projects,” the report said.

ISIS on brink of defeat in Syria

DEIR AL-ZOR PROVINCE, MAR 3 (AGENCIES): The Islamic State faced final territorial defeat on Saturday as the US-backed Syrian force battling the jihadists said it was closing in on their last bastion near the Iraqi border, capping years-long efforts to roll back the group. “We expect it to be over soon,” Mustafa Bali, a spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) told Reuters. While the fall of Baghouz, an eastern Syrian village on the bank of the Euphrates River, would mark a milestone in the campaign against the jihadists, they remain a threat, using guerrilla tactics and holding some desolate land further west. An array of enemies, both local and international, confronted ISIS after it declared a modern-day “caliphate” in 2014 across large swathes of territory it had seized in Syria and neighboring Iraq. Thousands of ISIS followers and fighters, who had retreated to Baghouz as the group was gradually driven out of those lands, have poured out of the

tiny cluster of hamlets and farmlands in Deir al-Zor province over the last few weeks. Their evacuation held up the final assault until Friday evening when the SDF said it had advanced and would not stop until the jihadists were defeated. Several hundred people trickled out of the tiny cluster of hamlets and farmland through the day. The majority were women and children, who were searched in the open and separated from the men,

who were taken for interrogation. They bore various nationalities including Russian, Indonesian and Azerbaijani. One woman told Reuters that ISIS militants still inside Baghouz had dug in and were ready to fight to the death. Bali said on Saturday that the SDF were advancing on two fronts using medium and heavy weaponry. Three SDF fighters had been wounded so far, he added. The United States has

about 2,000 troops in Syria, mainly to support the SDF in fighting against the Islamic State. President Donald Trump announced in December that they would be withdrawn because “we have won against ISIS,” a decision that shocked allies and top aides and prompted Defence Secretary Jim Mattis to quit. Last month, the White House said around 200 U.S. troops would stay as “a small peacekeeping group” for a period of time.

Ready to consult with US on Venezuela: Russia Moscow, Mar 3 (IANS): Russia is ready for consultations on the Venezuela crisis with the US in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said. According to a statement on Saturday by the ministry, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the situation around Venezuela with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during a telephone conversation, Xinhua reported. “In connection with Washington’s proposal to hold bilateral consultations on Venezuelan issues, it is indicated that we are ready for this, but it is necessary to strictly follow the principles of the UN Charter, since only Venezuelans have the right to determine their future,” the statement said. On Thursday, the UN Security Council failed to adopt two competing draft resolutions on Venezuela, sponsored by the United States and Russia respectively. Lavrov condemned Washington’s threats against the legitimate Venezuelan leadership, which is “blatant interference” in Venezuela’s internal affairs and a “flagrant violation” of international law.

Sanders calls Donald Trump ‘most dangerous president’ NEW YORK, MAR 3 (AGENCIES): US Senator Bernie Sanders returned to the place of his birth Saturday to deliver the first rally speech of his presidential campaign, vowing to defeat “the most dangerous president in modern American history” in Donald Trump. According to AFP, the Vermont independent voiced confidence at the address in the New York borough of Brooklyn that he would first beat the crowded field of his rivals for the 2020 nomination, with much of his liberal, populist agenda now considered mainstream Democratic policy. “I want to thank all of you for being part of a campaign which is not only going to win the Democratic nomination, which is not only going to defeat Donald Trump, who is the most dangerous president in modern American history,” Sanders told the crowd of several thousand people. “But, with your help, we are going to transform this country and finally create an economy and a government which works for all of us, not just the one

percent.” His promised that his campaign would say “loudly and clearly that the underlying principles of our government will not be greed, hatred and lies.” Sanders returned to Brooklyn College, which he once attended, for a rally emphasizing his personal story, as the working class son of a Jewish immigrant who grew up in poor housing. “I did not have a father who gave me millions of dollars to build luxury skyscrapers, casinos and country clubs,” Sanders said in another dig at Trump. “I did not come from a family that gave me a $200,000 allowance every year beginning at the age of three.” zSanders spelled

out his big ticket items for 2020, his second presidential campaign after losing the nomination to Hillary Clinton in 2016 -- “Medicare for All,” a $15-an-hour minimum wage and climate change. Many are long-held principles previously dismissed as too radical by more moderate Democrats, but are now more widely accepted talking points as he squares off against several other progressives who have embraced many of his issues. Following November’s midterm elections, the Congressional Progressive Caucus -- co-founded by Sanders in 1991 -- wields more power than at any time in its history.

Afghan forces kill 17 militants: Officials Flight operations resume at Pak’s Lahore airport Kabul, Mar 3 (IANS): Afghan forces have intensified military operations and killed 17 militants in the war-battered country in a single day on Sunday, officials said. The crackdowns have increased in the wake of Taliban’s deadly attack on an army base in Shorab area in the southern Helmand province of Aghanistan on Friday, reported Xinhua. The brazen offensive, which started on Friday, left some 50 dead and more than 40 others injured, ac-

cording to media reports. However, the government forces, in crackdown against militants, stormed Taliban hideouts in Dawlat Abad district of the northern Faryab province early on Sunday, killing six insurgents and injuring two others, army spokesman in the northern region said. Two Taliban senior commanders, Mawlawi Jalal and Mullah Jandullah, were also killed in the raids, he said. Similarly, a Taliban hideout in Shah Walikot district of the southern

Kandahar province was also stormed on Sunday, killing eight militants including a key Taliban commander Mullah Tor Naqibullah and injuring nine others, an army statement said. Showdown between security forces and the Taliban fighters in Khawja Ghar district of the northern Takahr province on Sunday morning left three militants dead and injured four others including two militants and two security personnel, district governor Mohammad Omar said.

Lahore, Mar 3 (PTI): Flight operations resumed at Lahore airport on Sunday after being suspended for over 72 hours as Pakistan’s airspace was closed in the wake of escalating tensions with India. Pakistan on Wednesday closed its airspace for commercial flights and suspended flight operations across major airports, including in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, for an indefinite period. mestic flights as thousands of passengers were left stranded worldwide after Islamabad shut down air travel following escalating tensions with India. The CAA on Friday announced that flight operations at the eastern side airports - Lahore, Multan, Sialkot, Faisalabab and Bahawalpur - will remain closed till March 4. The closure of the airspace left thousands of air travellers stranded worldwide and more than 700 international and domestic flights were cancelled dur-

ing the last three days to and from the country including flights to New Delhi. Tensions between India and Pakistan flared up after a suicide bomber of Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammad killed 40 CRPF personnel in Kashmir on February 14. Amid mounting out-

rage, the Indian Air Force carried out a counter-terror operation, hitting what it said was a JeM training camp in Balakot, deep inside Pakistan on February 26. The next day, Pakistan retaliated with a large air formation, comprising 24 fighter jets, including F-16s.

Modi, who landed in the city after addressing a rally in Bihar’s Patna, said Amethi, which has traditionally been loyal to the Gandhi family, was the best example of his government’s ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ (together with all, development for all) motto. “We were not able to win the seat the last time but won your hearts. Smritiji worked for the development here and did more work than that done by the one who has won from here,” he said, referring to Union Minister Smriti Irani who unsuccessfully contested the last election from Amethi. “Are you happy with the works we have done, have we not cared for you and tried honestly for your welfare...have we done any injustice to you,” Modi told the rally. “Those who voted for us and those who did not, all are ours...This is the

mantra of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’,” Modi said. The Congress president has alleged that his constituency has been receiving step-motherly treatment ever since the BJP-led government came to power at the Centre, with various development works being stalled. After laying the foundation stone of the riflemanufacturing unit, he said these modern rifles will be made in Amethi under a Russia-India joint venture. These rifles will be known as ‘made in Amethi’ and will help our jawans in encounters with naxals and terrorists, he said. “Amethi will get a new identity now,” Modi said. He accused previous governments of neglecting the armed forces and their needs.

Attacking the previous UPA government, Modi said, “These people sat on Rafale deal for years and when it was time for their government to go, they pushed it into cold storage.” “When our government assumed office, we finalised it in one-and-a-half years...and the first Rafale aircraft will be in our skies soon,” he added. This is Modi’s first visit to Amethi after coming to power in 2014. He visited the neighbouring Rae Bareli constituency, represented in Lok Sabha by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, in December. The new joint venture between India and Russia to manufacture the Kalashnikov assault rifles’ 200 series will be able to fulfil Indian security agencies’

requirement for small arms, Russian President Vladmir Putin said in a message read out by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman here on Sunday. Sitharaman read out the message during an event of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi where he laid the foundation stone of a manufacturing unit for the AK-203 assault rifles. The AK-203 will replace the INSAS rifles being used by the Army and other forces. The immediate target is to produce 7,00,000 AK-203 rifles in the facility, official sources said. “The new joint venture will manufacture world famous Kalashnikov assault rifles of the newest 200 series and eventually will reach full localisation of production. “Thus, the Indian defence-industrial sector will have the opportunity to fulfil the needs of national security agencies in this category of small arms, resting upon advanced Russian technologies,” Putin said in his message. He said military and technical cooperation has traditionally been one of the key areas of the special and privileged strategic partnership between Russia and India.

New Delhi, Mar 3 (AGENCIES): Intelligence agencies were trying to ascertain reports on the social media about the death of Jaish-e-Mohammed terror group chief Masood Azhar in Pakistan, officials said on Sunday. The officials said they had no information other than that Azhar was undergoing treatment at an army hospital after suffering renal failure. A resident of Bahawalpur in Pakistan’s Punjab province, Azhar formed the Jaish-e-Mohammed in 2000. The 50-year-old Azhar, who was released by the NDA government in 1999 in exchange of hostages of the hijacked Indian Airlines plane IC-814, has been accused of being the mastermind of the 2001 Parliament attack, suicide attack on Jammu and Kashmir state assembly, attack on Pathankot IAF base and the latest Pulwama terror strike. The social media was filled with reports that Azhar had died, but there was no confirmation as of now, the officials said. The government has claimed that it achieved a spectacular success by destroying the facility.

New Delhi, Mar 3 (AGENCIES): The encounter in north Kashmir’s Handwara which began on Friday morning ended 54 hours later Sunday noon with security forces killing two terrorists, one of who was a Pakistani. Three CRPF personnel, two Jammu and Kashmir policemen and a civilian were also killed in the three-day encounter. “Bodies of both the terrorists were recovered from the site of encounter,” the Jammu and Kashmir police spokesman Manoj Kumar said in a statement. “One jawan of CRPF identified as Sham Narayan Singh Yadav who was injured earlier has

attained martyrdom.” IG CRPF (operations), Zulfiquar Hassan said that the CRPF jawan succumbed on Saturday night increasing the death toll of security forces to five. A civilian was also killed during the gun battle on the first day. DIG north Kashmir M Suleman Choudhary said that they have identified one of the terrorists who is a Lashkar-e-Taiba militant from Pakistan. “His code name is Kabullah while we are ascertaining the identity of second terrorist,” he said. Police said the operation posed considerable difficulties to the security forces due to the topography of

the area. “Area where the terrorists were hiding was very congested and civilians in the adjoining houses had to be evacuated to the safer places away from the site of encounter,” the statement said. DIG Choudhary said that the area was largely built up and congested. “There are many lanes and by-lanes. Our approach has been to exercise restraint to avoid damage or any civilian causality. That is why it took time,” he said. “We evacuated all the civilians. Every home was searched so that nobody is left behind and then operation was started”.

PDA’s conduct in NLA rankles NPF (From p-1) Several NPF members when contacted said they learnt from Business Accounts Committee (BAC) members that the committee wanted extension of the session. However, they said the commissioner and secretary insisted on completing the session by February 26 since the next day was the end of the month. The opposition members told this correspondent that the assembly session could have extended for another five or more days in public interest. A PDA legislator, who wished not to be named, said some of the members in the treasury bench were dismayed by chief minister’s remark during the budget-- that the opposition members could file RTI if they had any doubts with issues related to the Finance department. Though the chief minister was confident that the financial figures can never go wrong, the legislator said that making such statement (inviting RTI) in the house was not proper as these statements were recorded. Over and above the complaints from the opposition, the NLA was plunged in darkness for more than a dozen times. This raised questions on whether a backup generator was installed for the assembly hall? The chief minister had to even use a mobile phone light to read the speech. Also opposition members repeated that if the ruling PDA was against the CAB then the Lok Sabha MP should have voted against it rather than not attending the session.

Can’t allow Kashmir to secede: Chidambaram

C h e n na i , M a r 3 (AGENCIES): The offer of plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir had been made under very different conditions, which has entirely changed since then, making it no longer relevant, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said in Chennai Saturday. Pitching for talks with Pakistan, he said though dealing with that neigbouring nation was “very complicated,” there was no other option to avoid war. “Plebiscite was offered under very different conditions, please understand that,” he said adding, that since then the conditions have changed in Jammu and Kashmir. Fielding a question from a member of the audience -- a DMK functionary -- at the launch of his book, “Undaunted: Saving the Idea of India” in Chennai, he said plebiscite was offered to a “united Kashmir. Since then the conditions have changed and nearly about one half of Jammu and Kashmir is Pakistan occupied now.” The top Cong ress leader said for about 70 years now Jammu and Kashmir and PakistanOccupied Kashmir were being governed by India and Pakistan respectively

and “the entire ground conditions have changed.” The senior DMK functionary, Thamizhachi Thangapandian, wanted to know about the “promise made by Jawaharlal Nehru,” referring to the offer of plebiscite. “Plebiscite was offered to the whole of Jammu and Kashmir...now Jammu thinks differently, Ladakh, Leh and Kargil think differently today...” The “problem” was essentially confined to the Kashmir valley and there was no problem in regions like Leh and Kargil, he said and recalled his visit to these two regions. “I don’t think that conditions for plebiscite are any longer relevant. The conditions have changed so much that the offer of plebsicite (made) then is valid today, I don’’t think so,” he said. Pointing out that he was only talking about heal-

ing the divisions in Kashmir, he said: “I certainly will not allow Kashmir to secede from India, that is not allowed, that is a no go area.” He said that within the Indian Union, “what they are asking is and as far as I have understood is a large degree of self government, which I think we should give them and we can give them.” To another question from a Congress MLA Vijaya Dharani, he said dealing with Pakistan was more complex, which involved a mixture of areas like foreign, defence and security policies. “Pakistan does not have a single authority government like India has,” he said and added that there was the State, the Army, and non-state players, the militant outfits like the Jaish-eMohammed. Such outfits are sometimes as powerful as the government itself and they acted on their own. “So it is very complicated dealing with Pakistan.. but as Vajpayeeji once said and Dr Manmohan Singh repeated, Pakistan is our neighbour, we can change our friends, we cannot change our neighbours.” The for mer Union Minister said hence, “we have to live with Pakistan forever and ever.”

‘Education expenditure rose to 4.6 pc of GDP’ Mumbai, Mar 3 (PTI): Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar said on Sunday that the government expenditure on education has gone up from 3.8 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2014 to 4.6 per cent during the NDA rule. Educational infrastructure too is being expanded and reformed, the minister said at a convocation at D Y Patil University in Navi Mumbai. “It is our priority that 6 per cent of GDP should be allotted to education... While total expenditure by central and state governments on education was 3.8 per cent of GDP in 2014, it has increased to 4.6 per cent now. This indicates that we are progressing towards 6 per cent,” he said. “We are making continuous efforts to improve educational facilities.... Seven new IITs, seven new IIMs, two new NITs (National Institutes of Technology), three central universities and around 125 Kendriya Vidyalayas have been started,” he said. The portal SWAYAM offers 2,000 courses and “like ATM, this is ATL ‘Anytime Learning’ for everyone for free”, Javadekar said. Besides, 32 educational channels have been

launched while free coaching for IIT Joint Entrance Exam is offered through IIT-PAL (Professor Assisted Learning) programme, he said. The Union minister also said that the NDA government took a “historic decision of introducing graded autonomy, while ensuring quality education”. Saying that a “new India is emerging” under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, he told the graduating students that “we need to take a decision to live for society, this is necessary for a new India which is free of corruption, uncleanliness, terrorism, poverty, communalism and casteism”. The BJP leader also pointed out that over 200 of 900 universities in the country have adopted Indian costume for convocation, and he was confident that “D Y Patil University too would conduct their convocation ceremony in Indian costume from next year”.

Parrikar has advanced-stage cancer: Sardesai

Panaji, Mar 3 (AGENCIES): Ailing Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is suffering from an advanced-stage cancer, senior state cabinet minister Vijai Sardesai said here on Sunday. Sardesai, who heads BJP ally Goa Forward Party, is the second member of the cabinet after health minister Vishwajit Rane to talk about the exact nature of Parrikar’s illness. While it is known that the chief minister, who has been in and out of hospitals since February 2018, is suffering from a pancreatic ailment, his office has not provided any specific information about the illness so far. Speaking to reporters, Sardesai, the town planning minister, said he will meet Parrikar on Monday to thank him for releasing funds for a cemetery and for getting another work sanctioned. “I am going, and get work sanctioned. Once again it is going to show that in spite of suffering from cancer, which is advanced stage of cancer, the CM is working for people,” he said. Rane had said Parrikar was suffering from cancer, but it was not confirmed by the CMO. Parrikar (63), underwent check-up at the staterun Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Sunday morning.

India rejects OIC resolution on ‘Indian terrorism’ in Kashmir

Sushma Swaraj addressing the inaugural plenary at OIC meet. (File)

New Delhi, Mar 3 (AGENCIES): Rejecting a resolution by the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) on Jammu and Kashmir that referred to “Indian terrorism” and “mass blindings”, the External Affairs Ministry said its stand on the matter was “well known”. The resolution on Jammu and Kashmir, another on the “India-Pakistan Peace Process” that praised Pakistan for its “efforts”, and a statement on “Muslim minorities” worldwide that called upon the Indian government to rebuild the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, came as an embarrassment for the government just a day after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had addressed the gathering. “We reaffirm that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and is a matter strictly internal to India,” the Ministry said in a statement here on Saturday after the conclusion

of the Council of Foreign Ministers in Abu Dhabi. The statement appreciated the invitation to Swaraj as a “historic gesture”. Officials underplayed the statements and references to India, pointing out that there were no negative references to New Delhi in the “Abu Dhabi declaration” document, which is the main communiqué. Sources told The Hindu that the other resolutions “don’t reflect or need a consensus” of the entire 57-nation group. “They are essentially national positions of individual countries, and often go unopposed,” an official said. Foreign Minister of the UAE Sheikh Abdullah attempted to explain the statements from what he called a “positive angle”. “I think the OIC has sent a very clear and positive sign to India and looks forward to strengthening such a relationship to a point where we can embrace India one day at the OIC,” he said.

Bhubaneswar, Mar 3 (PTI): Former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Justice Ajit Singh has been appointed as the first Lokayukta of Odisha. Governor Ganeshi Lal approved his name on Saturday following the recommendation of the state government’s selection committee last month, a senior official said. The selection committee at its meeting presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on February 12 had finalised the name of the Lokayukta Chairperson and sent it to the governor for his approval. Other members of the anti-corruption body will be appointed shortly, sources said. Born in 1956, Singh began his career as an advocate in 1979. He started his practice in Madhya Pradesh High Court at Jabalpur and

Ajit Singh (File)

was later appointed as an additional judge there in April, 2002 and became a permanent judge on March 21, 2003. He was transferred to Rajasthan High Court in March, 2015 from where he was transferred to Gauhati High Court in March, 2016. Singh held the post of Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court from March 5, 2016, till his retirement on September 5 last year. The state government

had last month submitted an affidavit before the Supreme Court stating that the selection process of Lokayukta will be completed by March 31 and it will start functioning in the state from April 8. Incidentally, Odisha claims to be the first state in the country to have passed the Lokayukta Bill in the State Assembly on February 14, 2014. It got the presidential assent in January 2015. As the state government did not take steps to make Lokayukta functional, the Supreme Court on July 10, 2019 had directed it to complete the process for appointment of the Lokayukta. The state government had constituted a sevenmember search committee on December 10 last year for finalising the name of the Lokayukta Chairperson.

Trump predicts big 2020 poll win; mocks Democrats

Oxon Hill (US), Mar 3 (Agencies): In a slashing speech packed with braggadocio and grievance, President Donald Trump denounced Democrats as the party of “the socialist nightmare,” relitigated his crowd sizes back to the inauguration and took on “sick,” ‘’lunatic” and “dirty” foes at every turn, earning him the unvarnished adoration of cheering conservatives. After a trying week of tumult and setbacks, Trump delivered a stemwinder Saturday that extended beyond two hours and hardly left him winded. A c c o r d i n g t o A P, Trump let loose against House Democrats, who are broadening their investigations of him, predicted he would win re-election by a greater margin than his 2016 victory, taunted his potential White House challengers and sounded themes that are staples of his rallies. He complained often of getting “no credit” for his achievements as he proudly drifted “off script” at the Conservative Political Action Conference. His remarks capped a week that saw his nuclear summit with North Korea’s leader collapse without an agreement, his former lawyer deliver damaging congressional testimony about his character and business practices and Congress take action to nullify his emergency declaration to secure money for the border wall

Donald Trump (File) that lawmakers have denied him. On the stage, he was a prideful and at times profane figure as he complained that past political appointments had allowed a situation where political foes were trying to take him out with “bullshit.” Trump reached back to old criticisms of his exattorney general, mocking Jeff Sessions’ Southern accent and calling him “weak and ineffective.” It took him more than an hour to get to the message that Republicans and members of his administration have been emphasizing in recent weeks as they try to brand Democratic policy ideas as socialism. “America will never be a socialist country,” he said. “Socialism is not about the environment, it’s not about justice, it’s not about virtue.” He said it’s about “power for the ruling class.” For every prepared line like that, there were multiple improvisations from a president on policy and personality.

“That’s how I got elected — by being off script,” Trump said early in his speech as the crowd roared its approval. With special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation seemingly approaching its end, Trump spoke of the “collusion delusion” and lashed out at newly empowered House Democrats who are opening new inquires involving him. “This phony thing,” Trump said of the Russia probe, “looks like it’s dying so they don’t have anything with Russia there, no collusion. So now they go in and morph into ‘Let’s inspect every deal he’s ever done. We’re going to go into his finances. We’re going to check his deals. We’re going to check’ - these people are sick.” House Democrats are undertaking several broad new investigations that reach far beyond Mueller’s focus on Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion between Russians and the Trump campaign. So far, Mueller has not brought any public charges alleging a criminal conspiracy between the campaign and Russia; the investigation continues. Their efforts increased this past week after Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, appeared before two House committees and a Senate committee.

Pak may stop opposing Azhar’s listing as terrorist

Masood Azhar ‘alive and well’, says JeM

New Delhi/Islamabad, Mar 3 (Agencies): Less than a week after India bombed terror camps of Jaish-e-Mohammad in Pakistan’s Balakot, speculations were rife that JeM chief and dreaded terrorist Masood Azhar had died on Sunday. While a few media reports claimed that Azhar died after battling prolonged illness, others suggested that he had succumbed to his injuries after Indian Air Force (IAF) jets struck the Jaish camp in Balakot, Times Now reported. However, on Sunday evening, Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad group released a statement, stating that the terror commander was alive and doing well. Earlier in the day, a minister in the Imran Khan government in Pakistan had claimed that Azhar was ‘very critical’ and was undergoing treatment at an Army hospital in the country. Tensions between India and Pakistan have flared up since February 14 after a JeM operative rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a bus plying CRPF soldiers in Pulwama, killing at least 40 CRPF jawans. India retaliated to the terror strike on February 26 when IAF’s 12 Mirage 2000 jets crossed LoC and destroyed the Jaish camp in Balakot. Amid speculations over Masood Azhar’s death, Jaish-e-Mohammed releases statement saying he is doing well

Islamabad, Mar 3 (PTI): Pakistan may take “decisive action” against all proscribed organisations, including Jaish-eMuhammed (JeM), and even withdraw its opposition to the move to list terror outfit’s chief Masood Azhar in the UN Security Council terror list, according to a media report on Sunday. The US, the UK and France on Wednesday moved a fresh proposal in the UN Security Council to designate Pakistan-based chief Azhar as a global terrorist, a listing that will subject him to global travel ban, asset freeze and arms embargo. In a major policy decision, Pakistan is set to take decisive action against all proscribed organisations as well as against the head of banned JeM, a senior security official familiar with the development quoted as saying by the Express Tribune. It is not clear what specific action would be taken against Azhar but the official hinted that Pakistan may withdraw its opposition to the listing of JeM chief as global terrorist by the UN Security Council. “The state has to decide whether individual is important or the larger national interest of the country,” the official said A brief history of when asked if Pakistan would no more oppose Masood Azhar: the UNSC action against In 1979-89, Azhar was Azhar. selected as the head of

was in-charge of conducting the second search, had offered to launch a new search mission to track the seabed. During Sunday’s event, flaperon, a part of the Boeing 777, was displayed to the public for the first time. However, the whereabouts of the main part of the fuselage remain unknown. The Beijing-bound MH370 had disappeared from the radar on March 8, 2014 about 40 minutes after taking off from Kuala Lumpur, when someone had turned off the communication systems and changed the aircraft’s route, according to official investigation. Several pieces of debris had been recovered in the last five years on the east coast of Africa, that analysts confirmed to be part of the missing aircraft, a Boeing 777. So far, 27 pieces have been recovered from the beaches of Reunion, Mozambique, Mauritius, South Africa and Pemba Island (Zanzibar), fragments that were swept away by the Indian Ocean currents, coinciding with the official hypothesis that the plane might have crashed into the Indian Ocean after running out of fuel.

Federer clinches 100th title in Dubai

DUBAI, MAR 3: Roger Federer claimed the 100th ATP title of his career by beating 20-year-old Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 6-4 in the final of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Saturday. The 20-times Grand Slam champion became the second man in the Open Era to claim 100 titles after American Jimmy Connors who won 109. Swiss Federer also avenged his shock defeat by Tsitsipas in the Australian Open fourth round in January. “I’m delighted. It’s great to win my eighth here in Dubai and in combination with my 100th singles title,” Federer said. “Tough conditions and tough opponents. To win in Marseille and then come here was difficult for Stefanos.” Federer, who had been stuck on 99 titles since

firm up to 4-4 in the second set before the 37-year-old Federer switched gears to seal the decisive break and close out the victory. “I don’t know if Stefanos was born when I won my first title,” Federer joked. “It’s a privilege (to play

Ethiopian runners win Tokyo Marathon

T o k yo, M arch 3 (IANS): Ethiopian runners won the men’s and women’s races at the 12th edition of the Tokyo Marathon, here on Sunday, braving a wet and windy weather. Birhanu Legese won the men’s race, his first major title, clocking 2:04:48, reports Efe news. Kenya’s Bedan Karoki finished second in 2:06:48, while compatriot Dickson Chumba, who had won twice in Tokyo, came third in 2:08.44, more than three minutes slower than his 2018 race. Japan’s hope for a homegrown victory was dashed when Suguru Osako who set a new Japanese national record in October pulled out of the race after 30 kilometres. “I am determined to do everything possible for the race to let at least five Japanese run (a) 2:06 marathon before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” race director Tad Hayano had said, according to a statement by the Tokyo Marathon Foundation on Sunday, before the race.

Indian parents more open to alternative careers: Tendulkar

PA NA J I , M A RC H 3 (IANS): Indian parents are now more open-minded and allow their wards the liberty to pursue alternative careers in dance, culinary arts and not just the hackneyed medicine and engineering, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar said on Sunday. Addressing reporters on the sidelines of an offroading event, BadRoadBuddies, organised by Apollo Tyres in South Goa’s Quepem village, the Bharat Ratna awardee said his vision was to transform India from a sports-loving to a sports-playing nation. “Parents are openminded now. You have so many celebrated chefs and professional dancers. India is slowly, slowly changing. And it’s all about giving them (youth) opportunity at the right time and platform,” Tendulkar said.

Sachin Tendulkar

“As far as our country is concerned, today the choice is not just confined to whether you want to be a doctor or an engineer,” he said. Underlining the importance of fitness, Tendulkar said it was key and when it came to maintaining one’s health, there was always scope for improvement. “Let us all get fitter and healthier. I know we all like to feel fit. But the statistics, the number, don’t say so. There is plenty of (room

for) improvement. That is the message I want to give to everyone,” he said. The record-setting cricketer said his vision was to get more Indian to actually play sports. “On number of occasions I have mentioned that India is a sports loving nation but not a sports playing nation. And that is what my aim is -- to transform India from a sports loving nation to a sports playing nation,” he remarked.

DAWN informs members to renew membership

Dubai, March 3 (IANS) West Indies swashbuckling batsman Chris Gayle, who blasted 77 runs in 27 balls in his final home one-day international match reflected on his two-decade international career, and what it meant playing for the national side. The 39-year-old expressed his gratitude to the people of the Caribbean for their support through this series and his career, according to the ICC’s website. “This is my last ODI series in the Caribbean so I was giving the fans a nice wave. Right through the tournament, they have been superb from both sides: West Indies and England sides. It would be nice if it was in Jamaica, but the crowds have been fantastic,” Gayle was quoted as saying by ICC’s website on Sunday. “It’s been an honour to wear the crest and entertain the people around

the Caribbean. West Indies is No.1. This is the best achievement you can have in the Caribbean as a cricketer. This is the best thing, to be honest with you,” he added. Since announcing his retirement, Gayle has scored 424 runs in four matches at a strike-rate of 134. Gayle had been a diminishing force before the start of this series. Runs had deserted him in T20 leagues around the world. Gayle also went unsold twice at the 2018 auction before being bought by Kings XI Punjab for his base price ($200,000 approx). “I’m thankful for the form. I wasn’t getting any runs in the T20 tournaments I was playing. When you get a chance to score runs, make sure you score heavy. But it’s the best (I’ve played) in my home conditions and I’m happy and grateful for that,” he said.

ICC declines BCCI plea to isolate Pakistan

Lukaku guides Man United to 3-2 win over Southampton

D U BAI , MARCH 3 (IANS): The International Cricket Council (ICC), here on Saturday evening, turned down the BCCI’s request for isolation of Pakistan from the global cricket community. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had in a letter to the ICC, following the Pulwama terror attack, demanded that the international cricket community sever cricketing ties with nations from where “terrorism emnates”. However, the ICC board at its meeting refused to accept the BCCI request. “The ICC has made it clear that this request cannot be implemented, as of now. The ICC did concede to our demands on security at the World Cup, but refused to accept this demand of ours,” a BCCI official said. Several former cricketers, like Sourav Ganguly and Harbhajan Singh and former officials like Rajiv Shukla, had demanded that India should boycott the June 16 World Cup match against Pakistan and persuade the international cricket community to isolate Pakistan. The BCCI has, however, not taken any decision to boycott the match yet, saying it will follow the government instructions on the matter.

Manchester, March 3 (IANS): Striker Romelu Lukaku netted a brace to lead Manchester United to a thrilling 3-2 win over visiting Southampton in Premier League action at Old Trafford. The victory in that Matchday 29 contest on Saturday catapulted the Red Devils (58 points) into the fourth spot ahead of Arsenal (57 points), who earlier in the day were held to a 1-1 draw by host Tottenham Hotspur, reports Efe news. Southampton remain in the 17th spot with 27 points and, with only a twopoint lead over Cardiff City, are still precariously close to the relegation zone. The visiting side opened the scoring on young French defender Yan Valery’s remarkable longrange blast in the 26th minute, and that lead held up until half-time. After the break, Brazilian playmaker Andreas Pereira drew United level with a right-footed blast that went past visiting goalie Angus Gunn and into the back of the net in minute 53. Just six minutes later, Lukaku gave United the lead for the first time when he received a pass from Pereira and scored on a close-range right-footed shot. Midfielder James Ward-Prowse, however,

French midfielder Paul Pogba had a chance to increase Man United’s margin of victory, but his penalty try in the dying minutes was saved by Gunn. In other Premier League action Saturday, Algerian star Riyad Mahrez scored league-leading Manchester City lone goal in a 1-0 away win over 12thplaced Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium. Mahrez, who took the field in first-half stoppage time in place of Kevin De Bruyne, sent a right-footed shot from the right side of the box into the bottom-left corner of the goal in the 55th minute. I can play innovative shots so SASRD Inter-class games took more risk: Kedar Jadhav championship concludes

HYDERABAD, MAR 3 (PTI): His innovative range of shots allowed him to take more risks in a tricky chase while Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s mere presence at the other end kept the pressure on Australia during the first ODI, feels Kedar Jadhav. Kedar’s unbeaten 81 off 87 balls saw India beat Australia by six wickets with Mahendra Singh Dhoni remaining not out on 59 at the other end. After reaching 50, Kedar suddenly changed gears while Dhoni was found suffering from cramps. Asked if Dhoni’s discomfort made him play more attacking shots, Kedar said: “Not really. Out of both of us, one had to take the risk. I have batted throughout my career at No 4, so I am more open to playing all the shots. “Growing up, I’ve always built my batting on playing innovative shots. I feel I have a good chance of converting those innovative shots,” Kedar told reporters at the post-match press conference. The Maharashtra player feels that Dhoni’s game is more about playing straight and it creates pres-

sure.

“Mahi’s natural game is hitting down the ground. As long as he’s there, the other teams always feel the pressure. Whatever little bit of cramp he was having, I just told him “you stay at the wicket, gives me a lot of confidence”. I could play my natural game after 50 because he was at the other end.” Like a fan boy, Kedar then spoke glowingly about the Dhoni effect on any junior player. “Every time I spend time with him, I learn a lot. I can’t put it in words but let’s say when I see Mahi bhai, I feel very confident. That’s the sort of aura where you feel that ‘I will deliver today’. He has that knack of getting best out of every player and that’s what everybody loves about him. “Credit to MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli for what they have achieved in their career. If we can achieve 10 or 15 percent of what they achieved, it will be great.” Kedar and Dhoni were in a similar situation in Melbourne during the final game of the series and also had a partnership that sealed it for them.

Madrid, March 3 (IANS): FC Barcelona got a first-half goal from Ivan Rakitic in a 1-0 La Liga victory over Real Madrid, who lost for the second time in four days to their arch-rival. The league-leading Catalans’ victory in the Matchday 26 contest at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium here on Saturday night, which was marred by an incident involving Blancos defender Sergio Ramos and Barca superstar Lionel Messi, gives them a whopping 12-point lead over the third-placed Madrid side with only a dozen games remaining in the season, reports Efe news. The hosts got off to a promising start and had some chances in Barcelona’s area in the early going, but Karim Benzema was off the mark with one attempt

on goal before a shot by Luka Modric was cleared away by Barca defender Gerard Pique. But Barcelona started asserting their superiority soon afterward, creating more and more danger with every foray into the hosts’ area until getting on the board with a goal by Rakitic in the 26th minute. The Croatian international produced a Messi-like finish on the play, receiving a pass on the right side from Sergi Roberto and then dinking a shot over a sliding Ramos and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who had hit the turf trying to prevent a low shot from getting past him. But the biggest drama at the close of the first half involved the ever-controversial Ramos, who beat Messi to a loose ball and in the process hit the Argentine in the face with his left arm.

Trials held for budding footballers in Kohima Correspondent

KOHIMA, March 3 (NPN): Delhi-based Sudeva Residential Football School conducted Kohima trials for U-13, U-15 and U-18 at IG Stadium, Kohima on March 3. Co-owner of the academy, Anuj Gupta observed that Nagaland has natural talents and are skilled in football. He however stressed on the need for proper training at grassroots level and suggested a league structure for players to grow. Talking to this correspondent, Gupta said India requires quality strikers and viewed that natural style of playing will suit if given proper training, adding that the state can produce quality strikers. He pointed out the weather suits players and suggested that the state need academies, youths and grassroots leagues that will give them opportunity to play more matches. He opined that league structure will improved the players as it provides players scope to improve and to mature in the game as opposed to tournaments where coaches or the players are scared of making mistakes During the trials, he observed that youngsters are eaget to learn and hungry for more. He said there

is a football culture but footballers need to be trained in professional manner. He also assured that he will produce one quality player from Kohima who will be able to play the youth league in Delhi. On being asked about scouting from big clubs in India, he suggested that the football association or the YRS department should provide more push and invite clubs to scout Naga talents during the league tournament. “If we show them the level, they will only come,” he said. Gupta added that the state needs to start grooming footballers at a tender age for the growth of the football in the state. On the selection of players from Nagaland, he said few selected players will be given full scholarship and some partial scholarship from Kohima . He however pondered on how players will acclimatize to weather in Delhi. “They have to get use to everything, to become a player it is not only playing in the ground, but about what you do outside the ground and get use to the challenges, but if they (players) stay, they will grow”, he said. Gupta hoped that Nagaland will be able to produce a club to play in second division team in I-League to make a differ-
