Poll schedule announcement won’t impede Naga talks: report

GUWAHATI/DIMA PUR, MAR 9 (AGENCIES/NPN): As Nagaland grows impatient over the long drawn out Naga peace process, the Centre has assured the eight groups engaged in the negotiations that announcement of election dates would not hinder signing of the peace accord, a Times of India report stated. “In case the Election Commission announces the election dates before the accord is signed, we have been told that since the peace process is a political negotiation, outcome of the Naga peace process will not amount to violation of the model code of conduct,” a key talks facilitator said, adding, “The people of Nagaland can’t afford to waste any more time.” The Naga peace talks centre on the demand for a ‘Greater Nagalim’- comprising contiguous Nagainhabited areas in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Myanmar.

The duration of the ongoing Naga peace talks has been among the longest- the ceasefire pact between the Centre and NSCN (I-M) was signed in 1997. Since then, seven other Naga groups have joined the peace process- GPRN/ NSCN, FGN, NNC (parent body), NPGN/NNC (NA), NSCN (R), NNC/ GDRN and NSCN (K) led by Khango Konyak under the umbrella of Naga National Political Group (NNPG). Earlier, deputy National Security Advisor (NSA) and Government of India’s Interlocutor for Naga peace talks, R.N. Ravi had told Nagaland Post that the Naga political peace process does not have much to do with the elections. “In the last 22 years, several elections for the parliament as well as state assembly have been held. I think it would be incorrect to draw any such reference to the forthcoming

Nagaland joins country-wide polio immunization

JCPI takes umbrage to CM’s statement on relaxing ILP for indigenous citizens of NE

DIMAPUR, MAR 9 (NPN): Nagaland along with the other states of the country would hold first round of National Immunisation Day (NID) on March 10, 2019. In a press release, State Immunisation Officer (UIP) Dr. Ritu Thurr stated that the department of health and family welfare was all geared up to administer polio drop to over 1.5 lakh eligible children from 0-5 years throughout the state in 2274 polio booths to be manned by 9096 health personnel and 445 supervisors along with vaccines and other logistics. The department stated that special focus would be given to migrant population with an aim to prevent importation of polio cases. The department has appealed to all sections of the people, agencies (government, non-government including security forces and police), organisations, churches and community leaders and especially parents of children below 5 years to come forward and ensure that all eligible children receive “two drops of life” (polio drops) on March 10, 2019.

DIMAPUR, MAR 9 (NPN): Reacting to the statement made by chief minister Neiphiu Rio during the recently concluded assembly session-- to relax the law for indigenous citizens of North Eastern states while implementing Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Dimapur or in other parts of the state-- the Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigrants (JCPI) termed it as “illogical, absurd, and anti-thesis” to the demand of the committee and the people of the state. In a joint statement, JCPI Convenor, K. Ghokheto Chophy, co-convenor Joel Naga and secretary Tia Longchar maintained that the intrusion of illegal immigrants into Nagaland is and will be mostly from NE region and not from any other states in the country.

Lok Sabha election,” Ravi said. He also admitted that “differing positions” on the demand for separate Naga flag and Constitution has delayed signing of the final agreement. In an exclusive interview to Nagaland Post during his recent visit to Nagaland, RN Ravi had disclosed that the Government of India was ready to consider Naga flag for Pan Naga cultural body and to term the final agreement as Naga “Yehzabo”. He, however, added that the Naga negotiators were not agreeable to it. The interlocutor also maintained that the final agreement could be signed “tomorrow” if the “Naga negotiators reciprocate with pragmatic flexibilities”. While Government of India was respectful of Naga’s unique history, their rights and identity, Ravi said, “Final agreement must unambiguously convey the unity of Nagas

“If we take the CM’s statement at face value, then there should be no BEFR/ILP in the state,” JCPI stated. Alleging that the statement of chief minister was loaded with malicious intent, JCPI therefore said it was left with no option but to “comprehensively reject it”. After the ILP committee had submitted its report to the government, JCPI said that the cabinet discussed and accepted the proposals of the committee. The same was averred by the deputy chief minster on the floor of the Assembly, particularly to bring Dimapur under the under the purview of ILP, JCPI added. The committee was asked to frame rules and regulations within one month’s time, for watertight

with the Indian Union.” The Interlocutor said that the Naga Peace Talks was at the concluding stage. “Political principles of settlement, substantive issue of competencies and structural issues of governance have all been mutually agreed,” he said. The Centre’s Interlocutor also maintained that the peace process has become truly inclusive with the seven Naga groups coming onboard. “We have mutual understanding with NSCN (I-M) that they would not oppose the Naga National Political Groups constructive cooperation in the peace process and their participation in the final agreement. The peace process can conclude any day,” he stated. “Everyone knows that in any negotiation a settlement depends on agreement among the negotiating parties on all the issues on the table. One negotiating party alone cannot do it,” Ravi stated.

implementation of ILP in the state; and to work out modalities for bringing Dimapur under ILP zone and enumeration of indigenous inhabitants in the state, JCPI stated. Therefore, JCPI has asked the chief minister to clarify that he will not interfere in watering down or weakening the provisions of the rules and regulations being worked out by the ILP committee. The committee has also requested Rio to assure the citizens of the state that their interests will be taken care of; that under no circumstances will loopholes be created in the provisions of the law creating another mockery like the Nagaland Prohibition Act. JCPI warned that any insertion of loopholes would be unfortunate, leading to unwarranted situations.

MUMBAI, MAR 9 (PTI): Linking Pathankot and Pulwama terror attacks to elections, MNS chief Raj Thackeray Saturday said another “Pulwama like strike” could occur in near future in a bid to Raj Thackeray win polls. He also slammed as “insult to jawans” Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement that presence of Rafale jets could have added to more firepower to the February 26 raids by Air Force on a terrorist camp in Pakistan’s Balakot. Thackeray was addressing party workers on the 13th Foundation Day of the MNS. Thackeray also alleged that the warnings issued by intelligence agencies prior to the Pulwama attack were ignored. “40 jawans were martyred in the Pulwama attack. Should we still not ask questions? In December, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval had met his Pakistani counterpart in Bangkok. Who will tell us what transpired at the meeting?” he questioned. Taking a dig at the BJP president Amit Shah’s statement on the number of casualties in the Balakot strike, the MNS chief said whether Shah was one of the “co-pilots” who participated in the air strike. “Intelligence agencies had sounded off warnings before Pulwama, however they were ignored. Is the NSA not responsible if jawans were killed despite prior intelligence?” he asked. Thackeray claimed the Indian Air Force “missed” targets it had intended to hit in Balakot because of “wrong information” provided to them by the Modi government.

affirmed its post-poll commitment with the NDPP and reminded that the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) “cannot be affected by the desperate moves of any political party or individual in attempting to disrupt the firm alliance in a desperate move.” The state BJP was reacting to the purported move of some NPF legislators, seeking to tie up with the NDPP. In this regard, the BJP through its chief spokesperson Kuputo Shohe said that the stand of the BJP was clear with its pre-poll alliance partner (NDPP). While acknowledging the unequivocal stand of NDPP to restrengthen the PDA alliance, BJP also appreciated the political maturity and statesmanship shown by NDPP under the leadership of chief minister Neiphiu Rio and NDPP, headed by its president, Chingwang Konyak. As affirmed by the NDPP in its statement published on March 7, BJP said it is also the stand of BJP Nagaland that the party was fully committed to keep the PDA intact and unfazed by any disruptive moves. BJP has also attributed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president Amit Shah in forming the pre-poll alliance with

dorsed the PDA government and the alliance partners to ensure a stable government in the state for all round development. While sincerely congratulating the PDA government for successfully completing one year in power, the BJP also extended its fullest support for good governance for the welfare of the people. Furthermore, the state BJP unit president Temjen Imna Along and the office bearers have endorsed the leadership of the BJP Legislature Party leader and deputy chief minister, Y. Patton and the BJP legislators “to take the right decision collectively in case of any untoward scenario of the PDA government.” BJP said it was resolute in strengthening the PDA with a strong conviction to complete the full term of the PDA government. It said since the day of formation of the PDA government, rumours had been spread that the PDA alliance would not last even for few months. However, BJP said PDA completed one year, un-fluttered. “The BJP Nagaland stands unruffled and shall continue to uphold the pre-poll alliance,” the BJP stated.

Don’t use photos of defence personnel: EC NEW DELHI, MAR 9 (PTI): The Election Commission Saturday asked political parties to “desist from displaying photographs of defence personnel” against the backdrop of a picture showing a hoarding with images of Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman as well as leaders of a party. Three-day boycott of Govt news by Assam newspapers

GUWAHATI, MAR 9, (AGENCIES): To register its protest against the apathy of the Government towards the problems faced by newspaper houses of Assam, the North East Newspaper Society has announced a three-day boycott of all State Government advertisements, any news related to the State Government and photographs. The boycott will begin from the March 10 issues of the newspapers, it was decided at an emergent general meeting of the Society held at the Agradoot Bhavan. The meeting, chaired by Kanak Sen Deka of Dainik Agradoot, was attended by Prafulla Govinda Baruah of The Assam

Tribune, Sadin-Pratidin group’s Jayanta Baruah, Subrata Sarma of Dainik Janambhumi, Samir Agarwala and Pranab Talukdar of GL Publications, Khagen Chandra Deka and Sunil Kumar Singh of Asomiya Khabar, Swapnil Bharali and Kaushik Hazarika of G Plus, Rameswar Chauhan of Hills Times and Pranjal Sen Deka of Dainik Agradoot, among others. While the rates of advertisements have not been revised since 2014, the cost of newsprint, other printing materials and transportation has gone up manifold. As a result of this, the newspaper industry has been reeling under a severe crisis. During a meeting with

representatives of the Society on February 22, 2018, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had assured to resolve three crucial problems faced by the newspaper houses – centralize the payments, make payments within 60 days, revise rates of advertisements every year, besides clearing all the outstanding dues. But those assurances have remained a lip service till date. Even the Gauhati High Court has issued an order in this regard, but it has not been honored as yet. Another meeting with the Additional Chief Secretary at a later date also did not yield the desired result. Several representations to the Government have fallen on deaf ears. “The newspaper houses did not have any other option but to call for the boycott. If the Government fails to initiate any steps to resolve the issues even after that, the newspaper houses will be forced to take sterner decisions,” a statement from the Society said.

Mizoram to set up Lokayukta on March 10 A I Z AW L , M A R 9 (AGENCIES): The Mizoram government will set up Lokayukta, an anticorruption ombudsman, to eradicate corruption in the state, an official of state’s law and judicial department said on Friday. The government has recently appointed Lalsawta, a retired IAS officer as the chairman of the corruption ombudsman. The official said that Lokayukta will be commenced with the swearing of the chairman on March 11. The state governor will administer oath of office to Lalsawta at a swearing-in function to be held at Durbal Hall of Raj Bhavan in Aizawl on Monday, he said. Law minister TJ Lalnuntluanga had earlier said that CM Zoramthanga gave serious concern about the establishment of Lokayuk-

ta as a result of which massive efforts have been taken to meet requirements for the final establishment. He said that the selection commission headed by CM Zoramthanga had recently appointed Lalsawta to head the ombudsman. The Mizoram Lokayukta Act was legislated by the state Assembly in 2014, but the establishment of the anti-corruption ombudsman was delayed by Lal Thanhawla-led Congress government due to several reasons. Establishment of Lokayukta was the poll agenda of the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) before the state assembly polls in November last year. The state government has allocated Rs 159. 34 lakh for the establishment of Lokyukta during the fiscal 2017-18.

Manipur: Tripartite talks on district creation inconclusive

Tripartite talks among UNC, Manipur government and Centre at Senapati on Saturday.

Correspondent IMPHAL, Mar 9: Another round of tripartite talks among delegates of United Naga Council (UNC), Manipur government and Government Of India (GoI) held in Senapati district headquarter ended with no visible progress on Saturday. UNC has been engaging in tripartite talks with the state government and Centre for new district creation which the apex body of Nagas of Manipur has been strongly opposing. The then Congress government had created seven new districts by bifurcating seven districts, two in the valley and five in the

hills in November 2016. The decision angered the UNC who then imposed the longest-ever economic blockade in all highways including two lifelines; NH-2 and NH37, demanding a revoke on the decision of district creation. The UNC came to the negotiating table only after a new BJP-led coalition government was installed in March 2017 and have been engaged in the tripartite talks since then. Today’s tripartite talk held at the DRDA hall of the Senapati district headquarters was the ninth round. Joint secretary (NE charge) Satyendra Garg of Union ministry of home af-

fairs presided over today’s meeting. Agriculture minister V Hangkhanlian led the state government delegation comprising education minister Thokchom Radheshyam Singh and tribal and hill areas minister N Kayisii. State principal secretar y (health & family welfare) Vumlunmang Vualnam and secretarycum-commissioner (youths affairs & sports) Bobby Waikhom assisted the ministerial team during the talks. UNC was represented by its president, S Kho John; general secretary, S Milan; former UNC president, Gaidon Kamei

and other leaders of Naga organisations including president of Naga Women’s Union. The state government expressed its regret in its inability to bring a concrete proposal for the talks due to its preoccupations with issues at hand while proposing next round of talks in the end of July of the current year. The UNC strongly protested against state government’s failure to come up with its concrete proposal like in the previous talks and stated that it will go back to Naga people and consult their sentiments regarding the issue. The decision of the UNC will be communicated to the government of India later, they informed. The UNC also reiterated that development works be carried out in the name of the present district during the talks. Mention may be made that the first round of talk was held on March 19, 2017, which was followed by several rounds of talk. The UNC has been demanding roll back of December 8, 2016 decision of the Manipur government regarding creation of seven new districts, particularly Kangpokpi (formerly proposed Sadar Hill district) and Jiribam districts.

people’s craving for a party with credibility. “We are going to give a new Sikkim and clean Sikkim. We are a young party and we have got credible people. This is what the people of Sikkim want,” he said. Scotching speculation that the HSP was holding talks with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and some regional parties to take on Chamling’s Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), that has been in power since 1994, Bhutia said:

“We are going it alone in this election. One or two parties, if they believe in our ideology, we are ready to take them (in). But at the moment, we are going with 32 candidates for the Assembly and one for the Lok Sabha.” On two HSP founding members and working presidents - R.B. Subba and K.N. Uprety - crossing over to the SDF, Bhutia said his party’s credibility would be stronger and better without them. “It is not at all a major challenge... After they left, the party’s credibility has gone up. Now when we say ‘clean, corruption free Sikkim’, people believe us.” Bhutia stressed on development being the sole agenda of the party, also taking potshots at the Chamling gover nment. “We’ll go completely on development. Because Sikkim, in 25 years, in terms of development, has been lacking,” he said.

DoNER minister dedicates two key NE roads New Delhi, Mar 9 (PTI): Union minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jitendra Singh on Saturday dedicated to the people two vital roads improving connectivity between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and Assam and Meghalaya. The 17.47-km-long Doimukh-Harmuti road linking Arunachal Pradesh with Assam and the 1.66km-long Tura-Mankachar road linking Meghalaya with Assam were inaugurated by Singh through video conferencing at a function here, an official statement said. Speaking on the occasion, the Union minister said the inauguration of the two roads marks a reiteration of the government’s commitment to the development of the North-Eastern Region. “The Northeast has undergone a revolutionary transformation in the last five years under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said. The prime minister has paid several visits to the

Jitendra Singh (File)

Northeast demonstrating his indulgence towards the region, Singh said. Pointing out that the Northeast faced a unique challenge as the region lacked intra-regional connectivity compared to connectivity with the rest of the country, he said the inter-state connectivity in the Northeast suffered on account of negligence. The Union government has given focus to revival of such “orphan roads”, he said. Singh said due to the intervention of the central government, there has been a visible transformation in rail, road and air connectivity in the Northeast. Two Nor theaster n states - Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya - have been

brought on the rail map. Besides, the longest rail-cum-road bridge on the Brahmaputra river at Bogibeel, was inaugurated last year on December 25 and a new greenfield airport at Pakyong, Sikkim’s first, was inaugurated on September 24 last year. It was built at a cost of Rs 553.5 crore. Singh said improved connectivity and infrastructure has removed bottlenecks in the development process, giving boost to the region’s economy and promoting industry. The improved infrastructure will lead to job creation, which in turn is expected to arrest migration of the youth, he added. The Doimukh-Harmuti interstate road has been constructed under the North East Road Sector Development Scheme (NERSDS) at a cost of Rs 58.25 crore. The length of the road in Assam is 7.87 km and the remaining 9.60 km is in Arunachal Pradesh. The Tura-Mankachar Road is the first road which has been completed under the NERSDS.

Millions in India constantly relocate to other parts of their state or the country on account of job, business, study, marriage or other reasons, he added. The Election Commission of India has even launched a National Campaign recently titled “It’s so easy” to encourage people to move their vote to their present place of residence. Incidentally the campaign was conceptualized and designed by CEO Manipur, as mandated by the Election Commission of India. The CEO later handed over the EPIC to the Governor in presence of N Praveen Singh, DC/DEO Imphal West.

IMPHAL, Mar 9: Maoist Communist Party Manipur (MCPM), the armed outfit recently announced its intervention in resolving Manipur People’s Party’s (MPP) existing internal crisis, claimed responsibility of bomb threat to the party (MPP) office on Saturday. A hand grenade in a polythene bag was placed at the table of general secretary (administration) of MPP by two unidentified persons, one being a woman, on Friday evening. While owing up the bomb threat, an email statement of the MCPM stated that it was a last warning to the “troublemaker” leaders and workers of MPP who were behind prevailing internal crisis that has been putting the one of the oldest regional political parties of India almost in a

defunct state. It is pertinent to mention here that MPP’s internal crisis was related with president’s seat which two intra-groups were fighting for. The MCPM, in a recent statement, announced that it will interfere in the internal crisis of the regional party while giving time to the two intra-groups to end the crisis through talks. On the other hand, leaders and workers of the party led by O Jugindro (one of the two controversial presidents of the party) today staged a sit-in-protest in front of the party office, against the bomb threat. Jugindro strongly condemned the bomb threat and said that many leaders of the party had been victims of armed miscreants in the past and demanded security protection from Manipur government.

G a n g to k , M a r 9 (IANS): Unfazed by recent desertions from his fledgling party, football icon-turnedpolitician Bhaichung Bhutia exudes confidence that the Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) would give a “new” and “clean” government if voted to power in the Himalayan state. While not ruling out the option of future alliances, the HSP Working President and former India football captain says that as of now, his party would contest the upcoming elections alone to the sole Lok Sabha seat and all the 32 Assembly seats in the state. In a freewheeling interview with IANS, Bhutia spoke on his party’s agenda, and attacked the state’s Pawan Chamling government on issues like corruption, while criticising some headline welfare policies unveiled by the regime. Bhutia said the HSP was the answer to Sikkim

move, the Governor said, “It is only natural that I move my constituency since Imphal has been my place of residence for some years now.” “Moreover, I identify with the place as I continue to learn more and more about the state and its people. here is much to be said about the way the NDA government under Narendra Modi has been handling the issue over purchase of 36 Rafale jets and perhaps, the most vicious being the threat to use the Official Secrets Act purportedly issue on media especially The Hindu for publishing the Rafale deal. Reacting to the government’s charge, The Hindu’s N Ram said documents related to the Rafale deal were published in public interest and nobody would get any information on the sources that provided them. It may be recalled that the Hindu on March 6, published more evidence of how the Narendra Modi government sabotaged India’s negotiating position and sold the country short in the Rafale deal with French aircraft manufacturing giant Dassault Aviation. The government told the Supreme Court that documents related to the Rafale aircraft deal have been stolen from the Ministry of Defence and, and threatened The Hindu newspaper with action under the Official Secrets Act. Supreme Court advocate Prashant Bhushan had petitioned the Court for a review of its December 2018 ruling dismissing the need for a CBI inquiry. The government said the petition was based on the documents revealing the Indian Negotiating Team documents which were published by The Hindu that were submitted to the government in July 2016, and an eight-page dissent note by three domain experts from the INT. The Governmental Agreement between India and France for the 36 Rafale fighter jets was signed in September 2016.The government’s plea was that since the documents were stolen the petition filed by Prashant Bhushan for a CBI inquiry ought to be dismissed and that the newspaper should instead by hauled under the Official Secrets Act. The issue reverberated across the nation with Editors Guild, INS and other media organisations expressing deep concern over the threat issued on the media. The Editors Guild of India had “unequivocally” condemned the Attorney General’s remarks (and also later reiterated by finance minister Arun Jaitley) before the Supreme Court. The Guild said the threat to use the Official Secrets Act was “reprehensible” .The acquisition of 36 Rafale jets has come under a cloud with the opposition led by the Congress trying to corner the government ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on charges of supporting big business and helping them secure lucrative contracts as a spin-off in the deal. The opposition has said that the price per jet as negotiated by the National Democratic Alliancegovernment led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is much higher than what was originally agreed to in 2012 by the then Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government. The government has contended that all rules and procedures were followed in the acquisition process that aims to bolster the Indian Air Force’s depleted fighter jet fleet. The Official Secrets Act carries a punishment of four to fourteen years imprisonment if it was found that sensitive security matters or documents were accessed by the enemies of the state that endangered the national security. Some experts have said that the purchase price difference between what the UPA-II had bargained and the final price agreed to by the NDA were not specific about security aspects. After saying that the documents were stolen, the government later retracted that statement. The issue over Rafale thus, reveals how the government intends to keep the matter under wraps despite it being in public domain for a year.

Post-mortem

A 21st century Christian is need of the hour T T his 21st century has witnessed some massive changes in the world today. It is an era of highly advanced Technology with global outlets and nuclear world communities. A world of possibilities where the word ‘Impossible’ is diminishing. Along with this paradigm shift, the world of Christianity has also have seen many changes. Keeping in tune with the rest of the world, the churches too are prospering in all aspects, be it in financial status, fame, global Christianity and various well advanced Evangelism strategies at its best, creating an impression of superiority over other poorer or smaller churches. It couldn’t get better than this from a worldly point of view and perspectives, as the 21st century seems to be the perfect platform for Christians to be witnessing Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth but sadly it is not so. Ironically, a closer look inside the world communities awaken us to the bitter truth and realities of life. With Nuclear war looming in the air, coupled with news of war and terrorists attacks almost becoming an everyday affair, corrupted leaders accepted naturally; justice denied to the poor, loss of freedom, coupled with natural calamities, and economic instability, that it doesn’t surprised us any more but a resigned acceptance of everything that is evil in the world today. The most shocking reality is that, the 21st century churches has comfortably adjusted herself to the transcends of time which depicts a morally and spiritually degraded society. The sacred practices of holiness and uniqueness of the church has dissolved into thin air, with the church seemingly welcoming the growth and similarities of the church with the world as unique. The church has loss her former glory and it’s sacred identity as the body of Christ, with a false

sense of spirituality amongst Christians today. We intend to become perfect in our own eyes and sin is ignored or accepted as a normal norm of life. We have reached a certain stage in our lives where we compromised Biblical teachings to fit our own worldly views. It is even more shameful to see that other religious groups of people fear and frown upon the Church instead of respecting and honoring our faith. I speak from a general point of view and not necessarily pin pointing to any countries, organizations or denominations here. How can the call of witnessing for Christ to the end of the Earth be fulfilled in this given situation? Specifically what role does the 21st century Christian have to accomplish to win more souls for Christ? The challenges that we are facing now is far greater than ever before. Our salvation is far nearer than ever (Rom.13:11). I echo the words of Statesman Edmund Berke who said, “All that is needed for the forces of evil to triumph is for good men and women to do nothing.” We must not remain a mere dumb or mute spectators for fear of rejection, secularist, socialist, communist, liberal, feminist or vice versa. The time to come out of our comfort zones and accomplish our given task for God in our generation has finally arrived, and it has to be now or never. It may not be possible for us to accomplish this feats alone at one go but we can start with the tiny small changes in our homes, friends circle and communities together as one in Christ. Our shared faith and values should reflect Christ just so that the truth of Christ teachings prevails, and it is our bounden duty to foster these values and carry it forward with conviction and a renewed spirit. Let us join hands to do something different with

our Faith and prove it to the world that being a responsible 21st Century Christian is not only limiting ourselves to our Christian community and churches alone, but to move beyond our comfort zones and reach out to be a part of a greater community that impact and bring changes to ordinary people’s life as a light bearer to the nation by spreading the Good News wherever we go exhibiting the life of Jesus. Let us not ignore the problems and suffering of our people anymore but become path finders for everyone to live together in peace. Great changes will not happen overnight but I believe small changes here and there will lead us to our ultimate goal of salvation for all humanity. To sum it all in Apostle Paul’s words, a 21st Century Christian’s life must apply this code to bring changes to our church in particular and society at large, “Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good. Love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” (Romans 12:9-18; NRSV). A wholly sincere Christian in this 21st Century is the need of the Hour. Let us be that one person. Vesetalu Tetseo (Ph.D. Seoul Christian University)

DailyDevotion Career options in Commerce Stream Turning Back or Walking with Jesus?

B

Do you also want to go away? —John 6:67 What a penetrating question! Our Lord’s words often hit home for us when He speaks in the simplest way. In spite of the fact that we know who Jesus is, He asks, “Do you also want to go away?” We must continually maintain an adventurous attitude toward Him, despite any potential personal risk. “From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more” (John 6:66). They turned back from walking with Jesus; not into sin, but away from Him. Many people today are pouring their lives out and working for Jesus Christ, but are not really walking with Him. One thing God constantly requires of us is a oneness with Jesus Christ. After being set apart through sanctification, we should discipline our lives spiritually to maintain this intimate oneness. When God gives you a clear determination of His will for you, all your striving to maintain that relationship by some particular method is completely unnecessary. All that is required is to live a natural life of absolute dependence on Jesus Christ. Never try to live your life with God in any other way than His way. And His way means absolute devotion to Him. Showing no concern for the uncertainties that lie ahead is the secret of walking with Jesus. Peter saw in Jesus only someone who could minister salvation to him and to the world. But our Lord wants us to be fellow laborers with Him. In John 6:70 Jesus lovingly reminded Peter that he was chosen to go with Him. And each of us must answer this question for ourselves and no one else: “Do you also want to go away?”

oard exams are going on and students after class X would be worried to choose streams in class XI. Generally a student who gets good marks prefers science and then arts and commerce. If we look at commerce students in our region then we shall find that commerce students are less when we look at arts or science. Many students and even guardians are not much aware what to do after commerce. Till recently, people have believe that commerce means something to do with accounts or they can join banks. There are many options for students studying in commerce stream. It is important for us to be well informed about the options and choices which we have for ourselves after studying in commerce stream. Some of the options are: Chartered Accountancy: CA or Chartered Accountancy course is managed by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Students may enrol after Class XII or after graduation. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament, viz. The Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 (Act No XXXVIII of 1949) for regulating the profession of Chartered Accountancy in the country. The Institute, functions under the administrative control of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India. The ICAI is the second largest professional body of Chartered Accountants in the world, with a strong tradition of service to the Indian economy in public interest. Details about the course and its scopes are available online at the website of ICAI . Company Secretary Course: This curse is managed by Institute of Company Secretaries of India. There are few stages to become CS and the stages to become a CS includes passing senior secondary or Class XII and go through three programmes namely Foundation Programme , Executive Programme, Professional

Actuarial Science : “Actuary” means a person skilled in determining the present effects of future contingent events or in finance modelling and risk analysis in different areas of insurance, or calculating the value of life interests and insurance risks, or designing and pricing of policies, working out the benefits recommending rates relating to insurance business, annuities, insurance and pension rates on the basis of empirically based tables and includes a statistician engaged in such technology, taxation, employees’ benefits and such other risk management and investments and who is a fellow member of the Institute. Institute of Actuaries of India is a statutory body established under The Actuaries Act 2006 (35 of 2006) for regulation of profession of Actuaries in India. We shall write about few more options in commerce stream for our readers. Students must remember that mere academic qualification will not guarantee a good job. Rising disparity of income and opportunities

he political discourse across the world is increasingly becoming dominated by the phenomenon of populism. The term has become so commonplace that it usually appears in popular media without an explanation as to who qualifies to be a populist. However, revisiting the idea can be instructive at this point. The definition for the term, which now forms the backbone of academic studies, was provided by young Dutch political scientist Cas Mudde in 2004. He suggested that the concept is a political ideology that considers society to be segregated into two homogenous and antagonistic groups: “the pure people” and “the corrupt elite” - and that politics should be an expression of the general will of the people. The first major sign of the global shift towards populism was the election of Donald Trump as the US President. Populists have been successful in other countries as well. Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines, Recep Tayyib Erdogan in Turkey, Victor Orban in Hungary and the Finns Party in Finland are evidence of the expanding global footprint of populism. Such trends point towards a larger shift in attitudes of citizens around the globe that are rapidly changing the face of democracy. The rise of populism around the world is of interest because it presents a few concerning aspects. Cas Mudde highlights that populist leaders usually carry one or all of the following traits: anti-establishment, authoritarianism, and nativism. Since the idea is about the virtue of the ordinary people against a corrupt establishment, populist leaders display resentment for existing authorities. The aversion of populist leaders to institutional restraint can also extend to the economy, where exercising complete control in the interest of the people implies that autonomous regulatory agencies should place no obstacles in their way. Alongside, they also exude authoritarian leanings as they believe to be representing the interest of the masses. Finally, the narrative set by populist leaders taps into the feeling of nationalism among the citizens, which can develop into xenophobic tones like in Trump’s America or Nigel Farage’s Britain. A combination of these three traits undermine and weaken the idea of democracy by making its institutions ineffective, concentrating power around a few individuals and polarising the people. It must also be noted that populism is not necessarily a movement of the right. Quite a few populist parties around the world favour economic left-wing policies. In fact, one of the most populist leaders in recent times, Hugo Chavez, rallied

Venezuela against the ‘predatory’ political elite and the US as a whole while attempting a socialist revolution in the country. Even Trump, for that matter, presents instances of socialistic tendencies in his advocacy of trade barriers and opposition to global trade deals. Thus, it is not necessarily a particular ideology that is driving the rise in populism. The root causes lie elsewhere. The reasons can be traced to the structural changes experienced in earlier decades. First, the technological revolution which took shape in the 1980s has since disproportionately benefited highly skilled workers while the rest of the workforce, especially in the developed world, saw their incomes stagnate or decline. This was the beginning of the growing economic disparity between the ‘elite’ and the masses. Among other things, it has resulted in a significant growth in inequality across the modern society. Second, globalisation, which accelerated in the 1990s also created clear winners and losers in both developed and emerging markets. As per the HeckscherOhlin theorem, trade benefits individuals who own factors with which the national economy is relatively well-endowed and hurts individuals who own factors that are relatively scarce. Hence, in the most developed nations that were capital-rich, unskilled workers were left holding the shorter end of the stick. These segments of population have been the strongest supporters of populist leaders who promise to close the borders and return their jobs to them. Finally, the last straw that broke the camel’s back was the 2008 financial crisis. It was a crisis that the working class saw as being a creation of the ‘elite’: the rich bankers and stock brokers. To make matters worse, the state bailed out the instigators of the crisis while the rest were left to deal with the consequences of austerity and joblessness. They have, thus, connected with populist leaders who have seemed to be the only ones speaking their language. Therefore, rising disparity in terms of income and opportunities has led the rise of populism around the world. The populist movement is an outcry from communities that have been shortchanged in the process of technological progress and globalisation; from those who have seen growth all around them but not for themselves. Every industrial or technological revolution in the past has been disruptive and has required social and economic adaption. The 21st century needs a commensurate adjustment. The dilemma of the English teacher

M

ore so for the literature teacher. I lost a good friend yesterday and am still in shock of losing someone so dear, so young. The mourning still deep but here I am today again with Mr. Biswas at his mischief best and the class ready to burst into laughter. How am I supposed to teach today! My heart is in tears and my text is roaring in comedy! It will never do to be so detached. Alas, my poor friend took leave never knowing in what hardship he’d thrown me in. I see a couple of students writhing, suffering from broken hearts of late and it’s not easy to teach them My Love is Like a Red Red Rose. They refuse to pay any attention and swear they will have nothing to do with it. And the tragedy is, it’s in their syllabus, all compulsory you know and they can’t agree! They may refuse to write their very examinations this semester! Heaven’s our wit-

ness that Jenny lost her pa just a couple of days back, surely she’s still inconsolable but in earnest pursuit of her studies she’s turned up so soon again. And the text we have today is Tristram, ready to change our very sense of laughter. It won’t do to make her laugh today. But alas I am not the authority to extend her leave. At some point of time, Keats will come to deliver his emotional lines. Will the students feel for him? For while he go about his negative capability in his fantastic objects, paradoxically enough, himself becomes our object of negative capability? will they start to weep? can we continue undisturbed? O, this is an autobiography! Then comes tragedy. How can you teach Hamlet on Jack’s birthday - to strike that note of gloomy philosophy and deal on the eternal futility of life when he has already come prepared to fete us all for his happy occasion. It won’t be

wise to take away his zest for life, his over the moon celebratory mood this morning. They just want to celebrate life! Ours is a Christian state and our religion tells us not to associate or be taken in by godless people. But alas our syllabus is full of atheists, gays, immorals, blasphemous eccentrics and the like - famous in their own rights, in their fields but godlessly alarming in their lives. Their lives and their products appear testimonial in total contradiction of a Christian life. Our students rolling their big big eyes when we sit down to study them should be no surprise. Only pray, these secular geniuses won’t take away anyone’s faith. The English teacher must be prepared for strange and interesting situations and must understand that a dilemma is just another dilemma, laugh it or cry it away and move on. Sir,

Take responsibility to clean up

It is always nice to put up buntings when the occasion demands as it add weightage for publicity coverage for that particular programme. People get to see the bright buntings and are aware that some important event is going to take place and so forth. Just as volunteers enthusiastically put up the buntings so also the same enthusiasm should be exhibited for their removal once the programme is over. If left unattended the buntings start hanging down in haphazard manner and drag on the ground making it a nuisance for people. Take the responsibility to clean up. January domestic SBI links pricing of loans, India’s air traffic up 12%: IATA deposits to repo rate

Mumbai, Mar 9 (PTI): In a first-of-its kind move that will ensure faster monetary transmission, the nation’s largest lender State Bank of India Friday announced linking of its savings deposits rates and shortterm loans to the RBI’s repo rate. The new rates, linked to the external benchmark rate, would be effective May 1, the bank said in a late evening statement. The move would help speed up the monetary transmission process wherein lenders pass on RBI’s rate cuts as well as hikes to borrowers. The RBI has been unhappy with delays in transmission of rate cut benefits by the banks. SBI said it would exempt savings bank account holders with balances up to Rs 1 lakh and borrowers with cash credit accounts and overdraft limits up to Rs 1 lakh from linkage to the repo rate. This would insulate small deposit-holders and small borrowers from the movement of exter nal benchmarks. “To address the concern of rigidities in the balance sheet structure and address the issue of quick transmission of changes in the RBI policy rates, effective May 1, 2019, we’ve taken the lead in linking key pricing decision for

savings bank deposits and short-term loans to the repo rate of the RBI,” SBI said. Savings bank deposits above Rs 1 lakh constitutes around 33 percent of SBI’s total deposit books, SBI Managing Director PK Gupta said. Currently, the bank is offering interest rate of 3.50 per cent for savings bank deposits up to Rs 1 crore and 4 per cent for deposits above Rs 1 crore, he added. “This is a major policy decision we have taken. A 25 basis points reduction in the repo rate can result in a 7-8 basis points cut in our MCLR now,” Gupta told PTI. The new regime would be applicable only for those with a balance of over Rs 1 lakh in their accounts. Currently, repo rate is 6.25 per cent. Also, the move will in fact see large depositors losing on the interest rate as at present a savings bank holder get paid 4 percent annum after the RBI under D Subbarao had deregulated the pricing of deposit rates. SBI said it would link the savings bank deposits, with balance above Rs 1 lakh to the repo rate with current effective rate being 3.50 per cent per annum, which is 2.75 per cent below the present repo rate.

The bank has also linked all cash credit accounts and overdrafts with limits above Rs 1 lakh to the repo rate plus a spread of 2.25 percent. The risk premia over and above this floor rate of 8.50 percent will be based on the risk profile of the borrower, as is the current practice, the bank said. In a note, Anil Gupta, vice-president and head of financial sector ratings at Icra said “linking the savings deposit rates with policy rate will help faster repricing of liabilities for banks and help protect their profit margins”. “ We e x p e c t m o r e banks, especially all the public sector ones, and a few large private banks to follow suit, which will also be in line with RBI requirements to link these rates to external benchmarks,” he added. India Ratings director and head financial institutions Prakash Agarwal said “the move will help the bank reduce volatility in its margins”. Despite the recent RBI rate cut, banks were struggling to reduce their lending and deposit rates as the deposit accretion continued to lag credit growth. Cutting deposits rate was not a feasible option amid slowing deposit growth.

New Delhi, Mar 9 (IANS): The growth of India’s domestic air passenger traffic sequentially slowed in January but managed to rise in double-digits for the 53rd consecutive month, a global airline association said on Friday. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said India’s domestic air passenger volume measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs) was the second highest among the major aviation markets such as Australia, Brazil, China, Japan, Russia and the US. As per the data, India’s domestic RPK in January rose by 12.4 per cent compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. India’s domestic passenger traffic growth was

preceded by that of China at 14.1 per cent. At 10.4 per cent, Russia was placed in the third position. “India and Russia posted double-digit growth despite being overtaken by China on this occasion. The annual rate of RPK growth for the domestic Indian market remained in double-digits at 12.4 per cent year-on-year with seasonally adjusted (SA) volumes trending up this month,” IATA said in its monthly report. In terms of capacity, India’s domestic available seat kilometres (ASKs), which measures the available passenger capacity, stood higher by 16.1 per cent in January, followed by China’s at 14.7 per cent and Russia at 10.5 per cent.

Gold weakens on muted demand

New Delhi, Mar 9 (PTI): Gold prices drifted lower by Rs 100 to Rs 33,170 per 10 grams at the bullion market here Saturday owing to weak demand from jewellers even as the metal strengthened overseas. On the other hand, silver rallied by Rs 800 to Rs 39,900 per kg due to increased offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said easing demand from local jewellers as well as retailers at the domestic spot market led to the decline in prices, but a firm trend overseas capped the fall. Globally, gold rebounded from multi-week lows to USD 1,298.70 an ounce in New York on Friday as the dollar slipped ahead of a key US jobs report and investors fretted over increased signs of a global slowdown. Silver surged to USD 15.31 an ounce. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity declined by Rs 100 each to Rs 33,170 and Rs 33,000 per 10 grams respectively. The yellow metal had gained Rs 200 in Friday’s trade.

Equity mutual fund inflows fall to 25-month low in February

Mumbai, Mar 9 (Agencies): Net flows into equities, including those linked to savings scheme funds, fell to just Rs.5,122 crore in February after hitting a 24-month low of Rs.6,158 crore in January, indicating a deepening slowdown in the mutual fund industry. Inflows into equity linked savings scheme (ELSS) funds fell around 26% to Rs.1,174 crore in February from Rs.1,585 crore a year ago. Income Funds, which include most debt fund categories, saw outflows of Rs.4,214 crore, with rising concern over defaults and downgrades in India’s debt market. Gilt funds, a debt fund category counted separately, also saw an outflow of Rs.149 crore compared to outflows of Rs.89 crore in January 2019. In fact, except equity mutual funds, exchange traded funds (ETFs) and fund-of-funds investing overseas, all the mutual fund categories saw high levels of outflows in February. Mutual funds as a whole saw a net outflow of Rs.20,083 crore for February, propelled by an outflow of Rs.24,509 crore from liquid funds/money market funds. The slowdown is the result of a host of factors, including political uncer-

tainty and liquidity tightness, according to the Association of Mutual Funds in India (Amfi) chief executive officer (CEO) N.S. Venkatesh. In sharp contrast to the equity inflow slowdown, the other ETF category, as distinct from gold ETFs, saw a rise in net inflow from Rs.721 crore in January to Rs.5,234 crore in February. This was on account of the Bharat 22 ETF, the third tranche of which was launched by the government in February, according to Venkatesh. The issue was massively oversubscribed with subscriptions of around Rs.50,000 crore. The government had itself set a target of raising Rs.3,500 crore with the option of retaining another Rs.9,500 crore. A comparison of the total retained amount of Rs.13,000 crore with the net inflow figure of Rs.5,234 crore for the other ETF category suggests that even this ETF saw the exit of a large chunk of money. This is largely because of the poor returns over the past year, according to Suresh Sadagopan, founder, Ladder 7 Financial Advisories. “We keep saying that investors are maturing but a long downturn pushes investors

back to their old ways,” he said. Mahesh Mirpuri, a Chennai-based mutual fund distributor, highlighted continued investor disenchantment with balanced funds. Many of the balanced funds were sold to get regular income from dividends, which dried up as the markets performed poorly. Swar up Mohanty, CEO, Mirae Asset Mutual Fund, attributed the slowdown to over-allocation to midcaps, which have failed to perform, and uncertainty over the coming elections. According to AMFI data, there was an outflow of Rs.1,077 crore in balanced funds in February compared to an outflow of Rs.952 crore in January. Net SIP (systematic investment plan) flows for February were marginally higher at Rs.8,095 crore compared to Rs.8,064 crore in January, according to Venkatesh. SIP flows have steadily risen over the past couple of years, though the trend has flattened out over the past four months. “The slowdown in net inflows even as SIP flows have been stable indicates outflows by lumpsum investors,” according to Amol Joshi, founder, Plan Rupee Investment Services.

A circular issued in December had said that the value of the product on which GST is to be levied is inclusive of TCS, leading to confusion among traders as it amounted to a tax on tax. Pakistan to upgrade group of banned outfits to ‘high risk’

Islamabad, March 9 (IANS): Pakistan has decided to upgrade a group of banned outfits, including the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), to the “high risk” category and start monitoring and re-examining their activities to comply with the requirements of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). The Paris-based global watchdog against financial crimes had expressed dissatisfaction over considering these entities as low to medium risk and said Pakistan did “not demonstrate a proper understanding of the terror financing risks posed by the JeM, Islamic State (IS), Al Qaeda, Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), Falah-i-Insaniat Foundation (FIF), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Haqqani Network, and persons affiliated with the Taliban”, Dawn news reported on Saturday. All these groups have now been described as “high-risk” entities and

would be subject to greater scrutiny by all agencies and institutions of the country, starting from their registration to operations and from their fund collection to bank accounts and issuance of suspicious transactions, information sharing and so on, an informed official said on Friday. The institutions include the Federal Investigation Agency, Securities and Exchange Commis-

sion of Pakistan, State Bank of Pakistan, National Counter-Terrorism Authority, Financial Monitoring Unit, among others. He said these decisions were taken at a meeting of the general council on FATF led by Finance Secretary Arif Ahmed Khan as part of a series of meetings to comply with the watchdog’s obligations. Khan had led the Pakistani delegation to Paris

during the February 1822 meetings of the FATF plenary and its group reviews. The institutions would complete this exercise within two weeks so as to present a compliance report to a delegation of the Asia-Pacific Joint Group, a regional associate of the FATF, slated to visit Islamabad on March 24, Dawn quoted the official as saying. The delegation would review Pakistan’s performance on the basis of Islamabad’s fresh exercise and submit its assessment report to the FATF headquarters. The FATF would then make a fresh review of Pakistan’s current progress and whether the country should be moved out of the “grey list” it imposed last year or be downgraded to the “black list” having serious financial and economic repercussions in case of serious shortcomings.

Nepal avalanche: Dutch national missing, 1 dead Kathmandu, March 9 (IANS): A trekking guide died and a Dutch national went missing in an avalanche along the Annapurna Circuit trekking route in Nepal, police said. The deceased was identified as Ajay Dhakal, 25, from Dhading district and the missing Dutch as Bloem Vincent, Inspector Shrawan Kumar BK said, adding the body was found on Friday. Dhakal phoned his family members after he climbed down Pisang on February 26, the police said, adding that the duo might have climbed down on February 27. The area was witnessing snowfall since then which might have buried Dhakal, police said. The police were contacted by the mountaineers' kin and the trekking company, who took Vincent's tour order, after contact was lost for a week. The incident site is 14 km from District Police Office in Chame in Upper Mustang. The roads in the area have been disrupted due to avalanche.

The CAA in its new notification said the opening of Pakistan’s airspace has been delayed till 3 p.m. on March 11 (Monday). On Friday, the aviation authority had announced that transit flights will be allowed to resume operations from 3 p.m. on Saturday, Geo TV reported. However, Saturday’s notification stated that the airspace has been closed for all flights from east to west and west to east till March 11 while some transit flights between the north and south of Pakistan’s airspace have been permitted to fly over

some routes. Sialkot, Rahim Yar Khan and Sukkur airports which were set to reopen on Saturday will also remain closed. For entr y and exit into and out of Pakistan, only specific airspace can be used, the notification added. Airports across Pakistan where flight operations resumed earlier this week will continue to operate as per schedule till 5 a.m. on March 15. Floods kill 23 in Malawi: Ministry Blantyre (Malawi), Mar 8 (AFP): Floods caused by incessant downpours have left 23 people dead across Malawi, the country’s Homeland Security Ministry said on Friday. In addition to the confirmed deaths, 11 people were also been reported missing with around 110,000 affected, a statement said. Twelve districts, all in the south of the country, had been blighted by the deluges. Malawi defence force and police search and rescue teams were working in collaboration with the Malawi Red Cross, the statement added. In one affected district, Mulanje, camps had been set up for displaced people, Commissioner Charles Makanga told AFP. The rains also hit transport links with two major bridges submerged, cutting off access to Blantyre, Malawi’s second largest city. According to the country’s Meteorological Department, sporadic downpours are due to continue until the middle of next week.

ISIS bride Shamima Begum’s baby confirmed dead in Syria London, Mar 9 (PTI): After a series of conflicting reports, a Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) spokesperson confirmed the death of the newborn son of the UK’s runaway ISIS bride, Shamima Begum, in a refugee camp in Syria. The baby, named Jarrah and just over two weeks old, died of pneumonia, according to a medical certificate, the USbacked SDF forces running the camp where the 19-year-old was based said on Friday. A UK government spokesperson said the death of any child was “tragic and deeply distressing for the family”. A paramedic working for the Kurdish Red Crescent in the camp said the baby had been suffering from breathing difficulties. He was taken to a doctor on Thursday morning before being transferred to hospital, along with his mother, but died later on Thursday. Begum has since returned to the camp and her child was buried there on Friday. Earlier, the Bangladeshiorigin girl’s family lawyer had stated on Twitter that they had received unconfirmed reports from within her refugee camp in the Middle East that her baby had passed away. “It is confirmed he is dead,” Mohammed Akunjee later stated on social media and posted a series of news reports critical of UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid, who had revoked Begum’s British citizenship last month even while acknowledging her baby as British. The UK’s Opposition took aim at Javid for his decision, with Labour’s shadow home secretary Diane Abbott

saying: “It is against international law to make someone stateless, and now an innocent child has died as a result of a British woman being stripped of her citizenship. This is callous and inhumane.” In a statement when reports of the baby’s death were still unconfirmed, Javid said: “Sadly there are probably many children, obviously perfectly innocent, who have been born in this war zone. I have nothing but sympathy for the children that have been dragged into this. This is a reminder of why it is so, so dangerous for anyone to be in this war zone.” As the baby was born while Begum was still a British national, his status was that of a British national and Begum’s London-based family had written to Javid to assist them in bringing the baby back to the UK based on his rights as a British citizen. Begum, who fled London as a 15-year-old schoolgirl to join the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group, is believed to be entitled to Bangladeshi citizenship by virtue of her parents’ heritage. “My number one job is to do whatever I can to keep this country safe,” Javid had said last month when announcing the revocation of her British citizenship. Begum’s son was born on February 17, days after she was tracked down heavily-pregnant in a refugee camp in Syria. She told reporters at the time that she had already lost two babies – one to malnutrition and another to ill-health – during her time with ISIS and pleaded with the UK government to allow her and her new-born baby to return to the Britain.

Pompeo discusses Indo-Pak situation with British NSA

Washington, Mar 9 (PTI): US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed with British NSA Mark Sedwill the current situation between India and Pakistan and the efforts to reduce tensions between the two South Asian neighbours, the State Department has said. Pompeo and Sedwill reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the US-UK special relationship and cooperation in the face of major global challenges, State Department Deputy Spokesperson Robert Palladino said Friday. According to the State Department, the talk was reflective of the fact that the United States continues to engage its resources to reduce the tensions between the two nuclear countries. “Secretary of State Michael R Pompeo met with UK National Security Advisor Mark Sedwill today to discuss key global priorities, including support for reducing tension between India and Pakistan, securing progress in Syria, and countering Iran’s malign influence,” Palladino said in a statement. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after a suicide bomber of Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) killed 40 CRPF personnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district in February 14. India launched a counter-terror operation in Balakot. The next day, Pakistan Air Force retaliated and downed a MiG-21 in an aerial combat and captured its pilot, who was handed over to India on March 1. The US, the UK and France, the three permanent veto-wielding members of the 15-nation United Nations Security Council, last month moved a fresh proposal in the UNSC to designate JeM’s chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. President Ram Nath Kovind launches the pulse polio programme by administering polio drops to a few children, at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, Saturday. (RB/PTI)

New Delhi, Mar 9 (PTI): President Ram Nath Kovind launched the Pulse Polio programme for 2019 on Saturday by administering polio drops to children below five years at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Kovind administered the polio drops on the eve of National Immunisation Day, which is observed on Sunday, a statement issued by the Health Ministry said. More than 17 crore children below five years across the country will be given polio drops as part

of the central government’s drive to sustain polio eradication from the country, it said. Speaking at the function, Union Minister for Health J P Nadda said under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Universal Immunisation Programme is focusing to protect children from more diseases than ever before and has introduced several new vaccines like pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, rotavirus vaccine and measles-rubella vac-

New Delhi, Mar 9 (PTI): The Congress will fight the general election in Uttar Pradesh on its own strength, party’s west UP incharge Jyotiraditya Scindia said Saturday, asserting the path of his party may be different from that of the SP and the BSP but their objective is the same. Scindia also said that as far as talks for alliances are concerned, “like-minded parties should also think in a like-minded way”. The AICC general secretary incharge UP west’s remarks assume significance as they come amid reports that there may be a rethink on the grand alliance in Uttar Pradesh to include the Congress. On Akhilesh Yadav’s remarks that the Congress was very much in the Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party-Rashtriya Lok Dal alliance and two seats were being left for it, Scindia said, “If this is his thinking, then we may also leave 2-3 seats for them.” “The current situation is that the SP and the BSP have taken a decision that they want to walk on a different path with the same objective that the Congress has. Our paths can be different, but the objective is the same,” he said. Scindia

asserted that the Congress wants to have a UPA government at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh it was determined to come back to power by 2022. “We have said time and again that our objective is the same that UPA government must be formed at the Centre. In Uttar Pradesh, the Congress is going to fight this election on its own strength,” Scindia told reporters here. “We believe that be it BSP or SP, they have taken a decision and we respect that decision. They have the right to choose their path. They have chosen their path and the Congress is going to fight this election on its own strength,” he said. Asked about whether talks should be held to bring like-minded parties together, he said dialogue should take place but it should be from both sides. “We are going to establish the Congress strongly on the ground in UP. And we are moving in that direction,” he said. On leaders in UP like Savitri Bai Phule joining the Congress, Scindia said the party’s doors are open for those who have strength on the ground, want to serve the people and are committed to form a new Uttar Pradesh.

Interestingly, both the Congress and the SP have announced their first list of candidates for some seats in UP. The Congress on Thursday announced 11 candidates for the electorally crucial state of the UP, fielding UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi from Raebareli and party president Rahul Gandhi from Amethi. Former Union ministers Salman Khurshid, Jitin Prasad and R P N Singh have been fielded from their traditional seats of Farrukhabad, Dhaurahra and Kushi Nagar respectively. The Samajwadi Party on Friday released its first list of nine candidates for the Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh, fielding party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav from its stronghold Mainpuri. Uttar Pradesh has 80 Lok Sabha seats out of which the Congress had won just two (Amethi and Raebareli) in 2014. BSP chief Mayawati and SP’s Akhilesh Yadav had jointly announced their alliance in January. On Tuesday, Yadav, at a press conference in Lucknow with RLD’s Jayant Chaudhary, had said the Rashtriya Lok Dal will contest three Lok Sabha seats as part of an alliance with the SP and the BSP.

Balakot air strike didn’t yield desired results: Togadia

cine in the recent past. “To provide additional protection to our children, the government has also introduced the injectable inactivated polio vaccine into its routine immunisation programme,” Nadda said. He said the government is making all efforts to protect children from diseases and emphasised that all vaccines under the programme must reach every child of the country. “Along with the Universal Immunisation Programme of the country, we have also launched Mission Indradhanush to accelerate our goal to achieve more than 90 pc full immunisation coverage. More than 3.39 crore children and 87 lakh pregnant women have been vaccinated through Mission Indradhanush drive, Nadda elaborated. Nadda informed that strengthening of immunisation programme has contributed significantly to the decline of Infant Mortality Rate from 39 in 2014 to 32 per 1,000 live births in 2017.

Bhopal, Mar 8 (PTI): Former VHP leader Praveen Togadia Friday said the air strike on a Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp in Pakistan has not yielded desired results as terror attacks have not stopped in Jammu and Kashmir. Terrorist attacks have not stopped due to the “weak” leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he alleged. Without naming then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the Hindutva leader praised the country’s leadership during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. “My question is, have terror attacks stopped after the air strike in Balakot? After the air strike, two majors and 10 jawans had been killed (in separate incidents in J&K). There was a grenade attack in Jammu yesterday,” he said. “If the surgery has been done, what is its importance (if the disease has not been cured)? Surgery (for me) means to get the patient rid

of cancer,” Togadia, a qualified cancer surgeon, told reporters here. To a question, Togadia said what is the use of air strikes if solders are still dying? “We split Pakistan in 1971, but at that time the leadership was with somebody else,” said the firebrand Hindutva leader. Apparently referring to Modi, who made a sur-

Kumar said the widespread presence of terrorist camps in Pakistan is public knowledge and repeated requests by India and the international community for Pakistan to take action against such groups has been met with “denial”. “In 2004, the then President of Pakistan had made a solemn public commitment that they would not allow any territory under their control to be used for terrorist activity in any manner,” he said. “But till today, however, Pakistan has failed to take any credible action against Jaish-e-Mohammed and other terrorist organisations, which continue to operate with impunity from Pakistan,” he said, adding Pakistan will be judged not by its words but on the basis

electronic evidence that Pakistan deployed F-16 aircraft and that one F-16 was shot down by Wing Commander Abhinandan,” Kumar said. H e s a i d Pa k i s t a n should explain why it continues to deny that its F-16 aircraft has been shot down. Hitting out at Pakistan for remaining in a state of denial, he said, “It is regrettable that Pakistan still continues to deny Jaish-eMohammed’s own claim of taking ownership of the Pulwama attack.” The MEA spokesperson referred to the Pakistan foreign minister’s interview to BBC on March where he talked about “some confusion” about JeM’s claim on the Pulwama attack. “Is Pakistan defending the Jaish-e-Mohammed and acting as its spokesperson? Does Pakistan’s claim have any credibility,” Kumar asked. He said despite the media interviews by Pakistan’s foreign minister and former president Musharraf acknowledging the presence of JeM in Pakistan, the spokesperson of the Pakistan armed forces openly denied the presence of the terror group in the country.

New Delhi, Mar 9 (PTI): Pakistan will be judged not by words but on basis of the action it takes to dismantle terror infrastructure on its soil, India said Saturday, asserting that its non-military strike on the JeM terrorist training camp in Balakot achieved its desired objective. External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said if Pakistan claims to be a ‘naya Pakistan’ (New Pakistan) with a ‘nayi soch’ (new thinking), then it should demonstrate ‘naya’ action (new action) against terror groups operating with impunity from its soil. The MEA’s comments came a day after Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said he will not allow Pakistani soil to be used for terror directed at other countries. Khan has been saying that a ‘Naya Pakistan’ is embarking on a new journey under his leadership. Kumar said Pakistan has been making identical statements after separate terror attacks and now Islamabad will have to take up the concrete action the international community expected it to take and must rein in terror groups operating from its soil.

Rahul asks Modi who released Masood Azhar

Haveri, Mar 9 (PTI): Stepping up attack on the Narendra Modi government over the Pulwama terror strike, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi Saturday asked the prime minister to explain to the nation why the then NDA dispensation had released terror outfit JeM chief Masood Azhar from Indian jail. Raking up the release of Azhar by the Vajpayee dispensation in 1999 in exchange for passengers of a hijacked Indian Airlines plane, he said Modi should tell the country “how Masood Azhar was sent back (to Pakistan), who sent and which government sent him (back)”. He also asserted that the Congress would not bow down to terror. In a fierce attack on the opposition, Modi had called them “poster boys of Pakistan” for seeking proof of the IAF’s action on a terror camp in Balakot in Pakistan and asked them to stop appeasing Pakistan. “Some days ago CRPF people were killed in Pulwama. I have a small question to the prime minister. Who killed these CRPF jawans? What is the name of the chief of Jaish-e-Mohammed?...Masood Azhar,”

Rahul Gandhi (PTI)

Gandhi said at a rally here in north Karnataka, where he sounded the party’s bugle for the Lok Sabha polls. The Congress chief said, “Modiji makes me understand who sent Masood Azhar from India’s jail to Pakistan. Didn’t the BJP government send this person from India’s jail to Pakistan? “Didn’t you send (then Union minister) Jaswant Singh and your National Security Advisor (Ajit Doval) on the same flight? Did you forget that your (party’s) government sent this person from India’s jail to Kandahar(in Afghanistan)?” “Why are you not speaking about it in your speeches? Why are you not saying that the person who carried out the bomb blast on CRPF, who killed CRPF jawans was sent back to Pakistan by the BJP govern-

ment?” Gandhi asked. He told the crowd, “Go to the internet, you can see the photo of Ajit Doval who is the National Security Advisor of Narendra Modi along with Masood Azhar at Kandahar airport.” “Modi ji we are not like you, we won’t bow in front of terrorism,” he said. Azhar was released by the Vajpayee government in exchange for passengers of the hijacked Indian Airlines plane IC-814 in 1999. The Kathmandu-New Delhi plane was hijacked and taken to Kandahar by Masood Azhar’s men. The JeM chief was freed along with Omar Sheikh and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar alias ‘Latram’ after negotiations with hijackers, in which Doval was involved, failed. The then external affairs minister Jaswant Singh took the three terrorists to Kandahar in a special plane to ensure the release of passengers of the hijacked plane. On the Rafale fighter jet issue, Gandhi asked Modi to explain “why he gave Rs 30,000 crore to Anil Ambani. You make make understand why did you purchase Rs 526 crore aircraft at Rs 1,600 crore.”

UNSC members aware about JeM chief being in Pak: India

New Delhi, Mar 9 (PTI): India on Saturday said all UN Security Council members were aware about the JeM training camps and the presence of terror group’s chief Masood Azhar in Pakistan, and urged the nations to designate him as a global terrorist. The US, Britain and France had moved a proposal at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) last week to designate the chief of the JeM, which claimed responsibility for the Pulwama terror attack, as a global terrorist. Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar, at a media briefing, said: “All 15 members of the UN Security Council had unanimously issued a statement strongly condemning the Pulwama terrorist attack.” All members of the UNSC are aware about the Jaish-e-Mohammed training camps in Pakistan and about the chief of Jaishe-Mohammed Masood Azhar and his presence in Pakistan, he said. “We call upon all members of the UNSC to list Masood Azhar as a designated terrorist under 1267 UN sanctions committee,” Kumar said. Official sources had earlier said any United

Nations Security Council member country can seek clarification on the proposal till March 13 following which the process to listing will commence. Azhar’s listing by the UNSC will subject him to global travel ban, asset freeze and arms embargo. It is the fourth such bid at the UN in the last 10 years to list Azhar as a global terrorist. In 2009, India unsuccessfully moved a proposal to designate Azhar. In 2016 again, India moved the proposal with the P3 - the US, the United Kingdom and France -- in the UN’s 1267 Sanctions Committee to ban Azhar. In 2017, the P3 nations moved a similar proposal again. However, on all occasions, China, a veto-wielding permanent member of the Security Council, blocked India’s proposal from being adopted by the Sanctions Committee.

AIADMK downplays DMDK’s MPs’ jibe

S a l e m / C h e nna i , Mar 9 (PTI): AIADMK top leader and Chief Minister K Palaniswami Saturday denied there was a deadlock in talks with the DMDK and softpedalled the prospective ally’s remarks against his party. D ow n p l ay i n g t h e DMDK’s remark that despite having 37 MPs, AIADMK could not bring good projects to the state, he said it was natural to be critical while being in the opposite camp and a consensus on views would emerge only when an alliance was struck. “Each party has a stand. There is no impasse (over talks aimed at stitching an alliance to face the Lok Sabha polls),” he told reporters at Salem when asked about the deadlock in talks with the DMDK. Premalatha Vijayakanth, DMDK’s treasurer and wife of party chief Vijayakanth, had asked on Friday what benefit Tamil Nadu got though the AIADMK won 37 of the 39 seats without being part of any alliance in 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Since AIADMK was not part of the winning combine -NDA- that wrested power at the Centre from the Congress, Tamil Nadu could not get “good projects” from the Union government notwithstanding its 37 MPs, she had told

K Palaniswami (File)

reporters. “This is an election to elect MPs, the Prime Minister and we have to tie-up with only one of the two national parties,” she had said, adding that a good decision would be out in a couple of days. The Congress party is in alliance with the DMK and the latter had days ago declared it had no seats to offer to DMDK. The DMDK’s remark, though seen as a jibe directed at the ruling party, was also perceived as a bid to defend the proposal to tie up with the AIADMK combine since the BJP is a key constituent in that alliance. Palaniswami said: “We know to what extent MDMK chief Vaiko had lambasted the DMK. Now he is in the DMK front and is extolling (DMK chief Stalin) sky-high... you don’t air such things in the (visual) media.” The DMDK top leader had not said that her party

opposed the AIADMK, the Chief Minister pointed out. Senior AIADMK leader D Jayakumar said he disagreed with Premalatha’s view and that his party could strongly raise its voice on the Mekedatu issue in Parliament only due to its 37 MPs. “Parliament was stalled. It happened only because of our 37 MPs,” Jayakumar, who is also the Fisheries Minister, told scribes in Chennai. The AIADMK had stalled Parliament last year over an alleged bid by Karnataka to build a dam at Mekedatu across the Cauvery. Despite not being part of the winning combine in 2014, AIADMK had never given up the rights of Tamil Nadu and had always fought and won the State’s rights, he said. AIADMK could exert pressure on the Centre only due to its strength of MPs and the state had also got funding for projects, he said. Asked if he was softpedalling the matter, he said the DMDK leader may have avoided making the remark. “Let us forgive and forget as per Anna’s (Dravidian ideologue and DMK founder) philosophy, the past is past, let us leave it.”

There are reports that our forces were ready to avenge the terror attack even then, but Delhi remained cold. The forces were not allowed to take any action,” he said. Stating that there were repeated terror attacks in India after 2008 whose links were found across the border, Modi questioned the previous government’s response. They did not change their policy, they only changed their home ministers, he said. “Had the previous government shown some courage and taught terrorists a lesson in their own language, terrorism would not have emerged as the menace it is now,” he said. He said after the predawn air strike on February 24, India was quietly monitoring the situation and it was Pakistan which started “crying” around 5.00 am that “Modi has hit us”. “They were thinking they can keep wounding India, wage attacks, proxy wars and India would not respond. Noida (UP), Mar 9 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday again hit out at those seeking proof of India’s air strike at Balakot in Pakistan and slammed the previous Congress government for its handling of terror attacks like the one in Mumbai in 2008. Addressing a public meeting in Greater Noida, Modi said the “corrupt” are opposing and abusing him in order to get votes. Modi said today India works on ‘nayi reeti, nayi neeti’ (new methods, new policies), asserting that after the terror attack in Uri (Jammu and Kashmir) in 2016, the country for the first time taught terrorists a lesson “in a language they understand” with surgical strikes. “Is it okay for you to have a government that does nothing? A chowkidar (referring to himself) who sleeps?” he asked the gathering of thousands, after inaugurating several development projects. He said the country can never forget the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai. India should have responded then and the whole world would have supported the country, he said. “But that required

New Delhi, Mar 9 (IANS/AGENCIES): Hours after a video of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi surfaced, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that the video shows “uncanny similarities” between the two as “both believe they are above law”. “The video of fugitive Nirav Modi in London shows an uncanny similarity between him and his ‘bhai’ (brother) PM Modi. Both have looted India and are called Modi. Both refuse to answer any questions. Both believe they are above the law. Both will face justice,” Gandhi said in a tweet attaching the video of the absconding diamantaire posted by the UK-based newspaper The Telegraph. His remarks came after the British newspaper claimed that Modi has been spotted in London. Earlier, a video released by The Telegraph showed Nirav Modi walking the London streets. He sported a new look -- handle-bar moustache and long hair -- and is seen avoiding questions posed to him, saying “no comments”.

ISL semi-final 1st leg: FC Goa thrash Mumbai

Mumbai, Mar 9 (Agencies): Mumbai City lost their first leg of the 2018-19 ISL semifinal by a deafening 5-1 margin to FC Goa at the Mumbai Football Arena on Saturday. The first 15 minutes of the match was mostly scrappy, with both teams being able to only create a half-chance apiece. Goa’s quick counter involved picturesque passing by Coro, Jacki and Brandon before Goian’s timely challenge. At the other end, Issoko’s effort was deflected for a corner, after Machado found him with a long diagonal cross. Mumbai took the lead in a similar fashion on the 20th minute, when Arnold once bamboozled Mandar on the flanks with his pace to send an out-footed cross to the far post, where Rafael Bastos was lurking

the net from hand-shaking distance. On the 39th minute, Brandon’s corner was inadvertently flicked by Edu onto the far post where Mourtada Fall reached the ball before Subhasish and nodded it home to earn his

team the lead. Goa made it 3-1 on the 50th minute and Coro finally opened his account in the knock-outs after scoring 33 league stage goals over two seasons. Seriton played the ball to Jacki whose cross was nodded home by the

former Espanyol striker. When it rained goals, it poured. Brandon floated in a corner into dangerous territory and Mourtada beat his teammate Edu to complete his brace. On the 67th minute, Serinton rounded a defender off inside the penalty box and hit the post while Lenny’s 25-yard flyer was tipped over the bar. The hosts looked hapless and depended on setpieces but Goian’s off-target header from almost touching distance of the target didn’t help their cause. Brandon put the final nail in the coffin when he latched onto a Hugo Boumous pass with defenders caught napping and calmly beat Amrinder at the near post to make the score 5-1. The two teams will meet in Goa on Tuesday.

MCC backs inclusion of women’s T20 in 2022 Commonwealth Games

Bengaluru, Mar 9 (PTI): The MCC World Cricket Committee, which comprises spin great Shane Warne, has unanimously backed the inclusion of women’s T20 competition in the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The next edition of the Games will be held in Birmingham and organisers are to announce this year whether cricket will get a place for the first time since 1998. Warne attended his first Marylebone Cricket Club World Cricket committee meeting after being elected to the committee last year. “It’s a hugely exciting time for women’s cricket after two great World Cups in two years and it’s up to the cricket world and Commonwealth Games

Federation to build on that momentum and bring cricket into multi-sport games,” the Australian legend said in Bengaluru. “What’s more, including women’s T20 in the Commonwealth Games will demonstrate that the sport of cricket is inclusive, dynamic and with plenty of opportunities for growth,” Warne added. For mer New Zealand women’s captain Suzie Bates, who has been a member of the committee since 2017, said, “Having Women’s T20 at Birmingham 2022 would be a gamechanger.” “Multi-sport events like the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics attract and inspire a different audience, so it’s an enormous opportunity for wom-

en’s cricket to win new fans, as well as being a chance for the Commonwealth Games to build on one of their core values - equality - and create more opportunities for female athletes.” The bid for inclusion was a joint submission from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and International Cricket Council (ICC), whose Chief Executive David Richardson is also attending the two-day meeting in Bengaluru. There was a positive update from committee members on the increased priority being placed on women’s cricket globally. Cricket was last included in the Commonwealth Games in 1998 when South Africa beat Australia in the men’s 50-over final in Kuala Lumpur.

Karachi, Mar 9 (PTI): Pakistan has demanded that the ICC take note of Indian cricketers wearing camouflage military caps during the third ODI against Australia, accusing Virat Kohli team’s of politicising the game. As a mark of respect to the CRPF jawans who lost their lives in the Pulawama terrorist attack, Indian cricketers sported the Army cap and also donated their match fee for the welfare of the families of the martyrs. Taking an exception to the gesture, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the International Cricket Council must do something about it. “The world saw that the Indian cricket team wore military caps instead of their own, did ICC not see this? We think that

it is the ICC’s responsibility to take notice of this without the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) bringing it up,” Qureshi was quoted as saying by Pakistan media. PCB chairman Ehsan Mani later said that the governing body is in touch with ICC over the issue of the Indian team wearing military caps. “We are talking to the ICC about it and I will not say anything more about it,” Mani said on Saturday at the national stadium. However, Pakistan chief selector and former skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq refused to be dragged into the debate. “Look, I am a cricketer and my job is cricket. All this is politics and I don’t want to be drawn into this,” the veteran of 120 Tests said.

rose to beat his marker and lodge his header into the back of the net. Chennai kept pressing thereafter and with Nestor Gordillo missing through suspension, it was left to his fellow Spaniard Sandro Rodriguez to fuel all attacks. He along with Slovakian Jozef Kaplan and Romario Jesuraj, both of whom were constantly switching flanks, were trying to create opportunities. For Minerva, most of their openings were being created by Querro from the left flank. The diminutive

Spaniard found goal-scorer Roland again in the 40th minute with a wonderful cross, but the Ukranian could not make most of a free-header this time. Upon the beginning of the second half, Chennai continued to get better control of the game. A Sydney Vanspaul effort in the 53rd minute from distance missed the target, but not by much. Two minutes later, Chennai got the opening they were looking for on a platter. Akashdeep Singh in an effort to clear inadver-

Coimbatore, Mar 9 (IANS): Delhi lad Gaurav Bora did the star turn with two second half goals as Chennai City FC won their maiden I-League title, beating defending champions Minerva Punjab FC 3-1 in their final game of the season, here on Saturday. Chennai finished with 43 points, one ahead of Quess East Bengal (QEB), who despite winning their final game in Kozhikode against Gokulam Kerala, saw their dreams of the first title triumph fade away in Coimbatore.

Pedro Manzi, Spanish striker fittingly scored a goal to join Churchill Brother’s Willis Plaza as the joint top scorer of the league with 21 goals apiece, but the day belonged to the young Gaurav Bora, a versatile defender cum midfielder who capped off a brilliant season with a double-strike when it mattered most for his team. It did not begin perfectly as Minerva took an early lead in the third minute of the game through Ukranian recruit Roland Bilala. It was off a Juan Querro free-kick from the right flank, that he

Both players returned from maternity leave a year ago at the desert tournament. Since then, Williams has reached two Grand Slam finals and returned to the world’s top 10. “It’s been an arduous road,” Williams said. “I think we both really appreciate both of our efforts to do the best that we can do.” Azarenka is still seeking to restore order in her personal life, having been involved in a legal tussle over her young son. over two hours to close out the match. She had four aces and nine double faults and saved 11 of 15 break points. Williams and Azarenka were meeting for the first time since their 2016 final at Indian Wells, which Azarenka won. “As much as she’s the toughest opponent I have ever played in my life, she’s my favorite person to play against,” Azarenka said. “Why I still play is because I enjoy the challenges. If it’s easy, if it’s boring, I don’t want to play.” The two women shared an embrace at the net afterward. Meanwhile, the 2nd seed and 2015 Indian Wells champion Simona Halep is off to a solid start in the

desert, defeating Barbora Strycova 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 26 minutes for the fifth straight win over the Czech without losing a set. The Romanian lost 44% of the points in her games to suffer three breaks from five chances she offered to Barbora, erasing that deficit with a commanding display on the return that carried her towards six breaks of serve and the place in the third round. Simona scored three breaks in the opener and we saw four straight breaks in the middle of the second set before the better-ranked player earned another one in game ten to cross the finish line and avoid the drama.

Ranchi, Mar 9 (IANS): Former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been rested for the remaining two One-day Internationals (ODIs) of the five-match rubber against Australia. Speaking to reporters after the third ODI here, India’s assistant coach Sanjay Bangar said late on Friday, “We will have some changes in the last two games. Dhoni will not be playing in the last two games. He will be taking rest.” In the absence of the experienced stumper, Rishabh Pant, who is a part of the current Indian squad, has become an automatic choice for the two ODIs as no replacement was named for Dhoni. M e a n w h i l e, p a c e r Mohammed Shami is also likely to miss the next two matches due to a leg injury. India lead the series 2-1 and both the sides will next clash on March 10 and March 13 in Mohali and Delhi respectively.

tently handled the ball inside the box and referee Santhosh Bhaskaran had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Manzi displayed outrageous confidence in pointing the goalkeeper to the spot where he would be placing the ball and did exactly what to bring Chennai firmly back into title reckoning. The young Gaurav Bora then made a name for a lifetime with two stunning strikes to put the issue beyond anyone’s doubt. Both goals came off corners taken by Sandro from the right flank. The first in the 69th minute was ear ned by Sandro himself who then delivered perfectly and Bora coming in on the far post unmarked connected with a crisp volley to put Chennai ahead. Then if QEB had any hopes remaining of a dying minute Minerva equaliser, Bora put paid them in the third minute of injury time when off another Sandro corner he came in and rose to head into the back of Minerva net. It was a fitting attacking and professional end to a brilliant campaign ably steered by Singaporean coach Akbar Nawas and as Bhaskaran blew for fulltime there scenes of emotions and joy all around the stadium.

England women’s cricket team with the trophy after winning India-England Women’s T20 series, in Guwahati on Saturday. (PTI)

G u wa h a t i , M a r 9 (IANS): The England women’s team successfully whitewashed India 3-0 after pipping them by a run in the third and final Twenty20 international of the series at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium here on Saturday. Chasing a moderate 120 runs for victory, the women in blue failed to cross the line after managing to make 118/6 in the allotted overs. Indian skipper and opener Smriti Mandhana top-scored for her side with a 39-ball 58, laced with eight boundaries and a six. India got off a poor start as opener Harleen Deol (1) was packed off by Anya

Shrubsole in just the second over of the innings. Mandhana was then joined by Jemimah Rodrigues (11 runs off 22) and the duo stabilised the Indian innings with a 49 run partnership before the former was trapped in front of the wicket by Linsey Smith. Mandhana and experienced Mithali Raj then came together to add 28-runs for the third wicket. However, the former became a victim of Laura Marsh in the 13th over with the Indian scorecard reading 87/3. Deepti Sharma and Mithali were then involved in a small partnership before Deepti was run-out. Mithali along with Bharati Fulmali

(5) took India closer towards victory. However, India lost Fulmali and Anuja Patil (0) in two successive deliveries as India fell short by just one run. Earlier, India managed to restrict England to 119/6 in their 20 overs, thanks to off-spinners Anuja and Harleen Deol, who took two wickets each while Ekta Bisht and Poonam Yadav chipped in with a wicket each. Brief scores: England 119/6 (Tammy Beaumont 29, Amy Ellen Jones 26; Harleen Deol 2/13) beat India 118/6 (Smriti Mandhana 58, Mithali Raj 30 not out; Kate Cross 2/18) by 1 run.

Juventus beat Udinese 4-1 in Serie A

Turin, Mar 9 (Agencies): Moise Kean scored a brace as Juventus warmed up for next week’s Champions League showdown with Atletico Madrid by easing past lowly Udinese 4-1 to up open a 19-point lead at the top of Serie A on Friday. Cristiano Ronaldo, Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala started on the bench ahead of next Tuesday’s game where Juventus need to overturn a 2-0 defeat in the last 16, second-leg game in Turin. But 19-year-old Kean was impressive as he partnered Federico Bernardeschi up front, scoring a first-half double in his first Serie A start of the season. The young Italian international opened his account after 11 minutes from a low Alex Sandro cross from close range. He added a second six minutes before the break, picking up the ball after a Seko Fofana midfield blunder, cutting into the box and finishing off past goalkeeper Juan Musso. Kean also won a penalty in the 67th minute after

being brought down. Emre Can converted and Blaise Matuidi nodded in a Rodrigo Bentancur cross for the fourth minutes later. Kean received a generous ovation when he was replaced with 10 minutes to go, allowing Hans Nicolussi Caviglia to make his debut. For the visitors, Kevin Lasagna came on after the break in place of 19-yearold Ben Wilmot, who had an unimpressive debut after

moving from Watford in January. Lasagna pulled one back six minutes from time controlling the ball with his chest to beat Wojciech Szczesny in the Juventus goal. Juventus, on track for an eighth consecutive title, remain unbeaten after 24 games and are 19 points ahead of second-placed Napoli who travel to Sassuolo on Sunday. Udinese who had been

coming off back-to-back league wins remain 15th – seven points above the relegation zone. The only worry for Allegri before Tuesday’s game against Atletico was veteran Andrea Barzagli going off injured after 25 minutes. Barzagli was making his comeback after four months out, but limped off to make way for Leonardo Bonucci who came off the bench.
