NPF stands by leaders’ statements

DIMAPUR, DEC 1 (NPN): NPF reiterated that it stood by statements of its legislators made at the party’s Central Executive Council (CEC) meeting in Kohima on November 29 (which was reported in the media the next day). According to NPF Media & Press Bureau, all matters and any problems visà-vis the party’s affairs and policies are discussed, deliberated or debated at the CEC meeting. NPF reiterated that CEC is the highest platform of NPF formed as per Article IV:3 and encompassing members from all levels and sections of the party. It further pointed out that on November 29 at the CEC, several issues were discussed and deliberated pertaining to the NPF and in which speakers, mostly ministers and in charge of various divisions (districts) voice and shared views and opinions and positions at the grass root. During the course of proceedings, NPF said “certain instances, unpleasant for NPF and BJP of the DAN alliance, also crept up following the state Governor P.B. yet much more grounds remained to be covered. He called upon the people of the state to recommit to work unitedly towards the goals and visions of creating a peaceful and progressive state. KOHIMA, DEC 1 (NPN): US Ambassador to India, Richard Verma arrived Kohima on Thursday evening and visited Kisama, the Hornbill Festival venue and later took a stroll to the Night Carnival at the main city centre along with high ranking officials from the US consulate. and said it was his desire to visit the state during his North Eastern states tour. Besides witnessing cultural, music, local handicrafts and other extravaganza, the ambassador also had the opportunity taste various Naga delicacies at the carnival. According to Verma, the visit to Nagaland and other Northeast states was to explore greater linkages between the region and United States in trade, education, infrastructure and innovation, and an opportunity to meet the business leaders and civil societies.

NEW DELHI, DEC 1 (AGENCIES): Stepping up its attack on the government over Income Tax Amendment Bill, a united opposition on Thursday petitioned President Pranab Mukherjee against it. They alleged the legislation was hurriedly passed in the Lok Sabha bypassing parliamentary rules and procedures. As many as 16 opposition parties, including Congress, Trinamool Congress, the Left, SP and BSP, besides DMK, JMM and NCP met the President at Rashtrapati Bhawan this evening and handed over a memorandum, which alleged a “brute and authoritarian” government was “stifling” the democratic process. The JDU, whose president and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has supported demonetisation, however, was not part of the delegation. “We appeal to you as the custodian and protector of the Constitution to intervene at this juncture as democratic rights are being trampled upon by a brute and authoritarian government that is hell bent upon stifling the democratic

rupt and subsequently, the Nagaland state BJP submitting a representation to the state Governor, terming and accusing the DAN government as corrupt”. NPF pointed out that the discussion veered round the fact that the Governor of a state meant the state government was the Governor’s own government and whether it would be wise for the Governor to say “My corrupt government” while addressing the assembly. NPF also slammed BJP, a close and old ally who has been sharing power in DAN for years on engaging in blame game and “sheer falsehood” to indict NPF as being “corrupt” or giving BJP a step-motherly treatment. On one minister’s criticism against the Governor for visiting villages unannounced, NPF said it was in view of the fact that the Governor functions as per parliamentary system. NPF said pre-information was needed before visiting villages so that arrangements were made properly for the visiting head of state and to avoid hardships, confusion and misunderstanding. On the status of Nagaland BJP president as

vice chairman of DAN, NPF said as pointed out by BJP spokesman, this matter should be sorted out at the right forum. NPF reiterated that while it stood by the statements of its legislators on November 29, some of the points raised were reported out of context in local dailies. It said while legislators voiced concern over various issues, it also touched on activities of the Governor because of “prevailing total communication gap between Raj Bhavan and the legislators”. NPF said CEC maintained that the integrity of Raj Bhavan should be maintained and that no political party, including BJP should misuse it. The meeting said the Governor could have been more diplomatic while expressing his views since he was head of the state. Hitting back at the BJP, NPF asked BJP not to be agitated because the BJP itself had raked-up the differences within their alliance. NPF reminded BJP that both parties have to take blame or credit as DAN partners but instead BJP seemed to be “acting holier than thou”. (Cont’d on p-5)

Raju said the police have issued directions to the Bank authorities to freeze these bank accounts for further investigation. Last month, police have traced and seized Rs 35 Lakh from Batsrang and Saljepa of Williamnagar who are hard core GNLA cadres while attempting to deposit terror funds in the banks. Raju said that the central government has issued general alert that outlawed militant groups might park their ill gotten money in bank accounts of civilians. “We have requested all the Banks in the State to be watchful of any suspicious deposits and to inform the police in all such cases. Manipur BJP denies link with NSCN-IM Imphal, Dec 1 (Agencies): If the Congress party can prove that NSCN-IM and BJP are in cahoots behind the ongoing economic blockade on the state’s two national highways, BJP will not contest the Assembly elections. this was stated by Th Biswajit, general secretary administration of BJP Manipur Pradesh. He was reacting to charges lebelled by CM O Ibobi Singh during his speech at a political conference at Naoriya Pakhanglakpa on November 27 that the blockade was the result of a conspiracy between the BJP led NDA government at the Centre and the NSCN (IM). “In every election campaign Congress has been bringing up the issue of territorial integrity and the design of NSCN-IM but it is doing nothing to safeguard it,” said Biswajit. In another development the BJP election management committee has been revitalized in the run up to the Manipur legislative assembly elections. The Imphal East, Imphal Central and Imphal West have been jointly assigned to Y Erabot, N Biren, Kh Joykisan and Th Bishwajit. The convener and co-convener of SEMC BJP Manipur will supervise all districts for smooth conduct of election for BJP.

NEW DELHI, DEC 1 (PTI): Union Health Minister J P Nadda today said around two decades ago India was predicted to be the AIDS capital of world but has now “successfully arrested” the epidemic of HIV and claimed that the country can end it by 2030. “Our concerted efforts and strategies have been able to see a success story of India. We can now safely say that we can end the HIV and AIDS epidemic by 2030,” Nadda said during an event to mark World AIDS Day. “There is a consistent decline in HIV prevalence over the years, 57 per cent reduction in the incidences of new infections, and 29 per cent decline also in the number of AIDS-related deaths,” Nadda added. Stating that the Centre has taken major policy decisions towards strengthening the fight against the epidemic, Nadda said that

his Ministry has already implemented cut-off level for initiation of Anti Retrieval Therapy (ART) to CD4 count of 500 and is working to raise the bar further to treat every patient. “Government has taken major policy decisions towards strengthening the fight against the epidemic. It has been decided that the National AIDS Control Programme will continue as a Central Sector Scheme. “The Ministry will start ART and the cut-off level for initiation of Anti

Retrieval Therapy (ART) will be raised to a CD4 count of 500. This has been now implemented and we are working on raising the bar further to treat all and have started discussions on those lines,” he said. The Union Health Minister said the government is presently treating more than 10 lakh patients with free ARV therapy. He said that the third line ART is now available free under the ART programme. He released the ‘NACO My Stamp’, HIV counselling and testing services guidelines and a booklet on assessment of blood banks in India. Patton clarifies: After denouncing the Governor at the November 29 CEC meeting in Kohima, Nagaland Home Minister Y. Patton has drawn attention on the November 30 news report which quoted him as saying “Raj Bhavan has been turned into a place for RSS, BJP and Heraka”. In a clarification issued through his PS, the minister claimed he was quoted out of context. Patton said he had only said that “not only the RSS, BJP and other section of people but NPF leaders should also pay a courtesy visit to the Governor from time to time, as he is the head of the state.” Claiming that a portion of his speech was not reported, Patton said as an elected member, he held the “highest respect for the Governor.” Patton therefore, expressed his deepest concern that, “at any cost, the propriety and sanctity of the Raj Bhavan should be maintained.”

Nagaland Post Vol. XXVI NO. 356 Dimapur, Friday, December 2, 2016

I

No checks

t came as a surprise to some but perhaps not to many, when the dominant party in the DAN coalition - Naga Peoples’ Front(NPF)- shed its gloves and attacked the Governor on contestable issues raised by the latter. What has precipitated the current attack and counter-attack was the November 10 press conference addressed by the Governor during which he strongly criticised his government over rampant corruption at all levels. At the press meet in Kohima, the Governor, gave vent to his frustration and anger at the wholesale corruption in Nagaland that has been institutionalised by politicians in power, bureaucrats and businessmen. The Governor had been receiving a spate of memoranda as well as representations that highlighted various corrupt practices, some of which were documented. It may be that these complaints had been forwarded to the state government but which may have not received the needed and expected response. The NPF ministers had attacked the Governor for criticising his own government but they did not mention that it was on corruption. They could have at least assured to look into whatever complaints while urging the Governor not to go public. A major part of the problem is absence of an opposition. In a normal situation, the opposition acts as watchdog over the ruling party. Presently, there is an “opposition-less assembly” in Nagaland which in itself means, that all sixty legislators are ruling coalition members. It was however, a small comfort that one independent legislator, through circumstances, was somehow made to take up the challenge of articulating his views freely and without fear of the suppressive diktat. The “opposition-less/all-party government” is more of a reflection of the loss of moral compass than claiming that it was due to a necessity of coming together for the sake of Naga political solution. Even if there is an opposition, it wouldn’t have made any difference to the eventual outcome of the Naga political talks for two reasons. First, all elected members, irrespective of ruling or opposition, have been united in supporting early solution to the Naga political issue. Secondly, neither the state legislators nor the government are involved in the negotiations so they have no role to play except pat themselves for merely being self-acclaimed “facilitators” or whatever term used. The absence of an opposition is actually not only an abnormal condition but also against the mandate of the voters. Due to such a condition, no meaningful debates have been held. Once a session lasted only for 15 minutes and also 28 minutes. This means no meaningful debate on any issue has been held because no ruling party legislator dares to criticise the functioning of any of the government departments etc. In parliamentary democracy, the ruling and opposition work like two hands and absence of any, would disable the democratic system. The entire situation also shows that there is no opposition to corruption in Nagaland. Acharya said his government’s performance could improve if there was a legislative watchdog not only to check corruption but also to discuss pressing matters in an open and frank manner. Also, the fact that the BJP has attacked NPF as corrupt while it is still part of the coalition, again reflects the height of political opportunism that plagues the entire political spectrum today.

DailyDevotion The Law and the Gospel

Whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. —James 2:10 The moral law does not consider our weaknesses as human beings; in fact, it does not take into account our heredity or infirmities. It simply demands that we be absolutely moral. The moral law never changes, either for the highest of society or for the weakest in the world. It is enduring and eternally the same. The moral law, ordained by God, does not make itself weak to the weak by excusing our shortcomings. It remains absolute for all time and eternity. If we are not aware of this, it is because we are less than alive. Once we do realize it, our life immediately becomes a fatal tragedy. “I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died” (Romans 7:9). The moment we realize this, the Spirit of God convicts us of sin. Until a person gets there and sees that there is no hope, the Cross of Christ remains absurd to him. Conviction of sin always brings a fearful, confining sense of the law. It makes a person hopeless— “…sold under sin” (Romans 7:14). I, a guilty sinner, can never work to get right with God— it is impossible. There is only one way by which I can get right with God, and that is through the death of Jesus Christ. I must get rid of the underlying idea that I can ever be right with God because of my obedience. Who of us could ever obey God to absolute perfection! We only begin to realize the power of the moral law once we see that it comes with a condition and a promise. But God never coerces us. Sometimes we wish He would make us be obedient, and at other times we wish He would leave us alone. Whenever God’s will is in complete control, He removes all pressure. And when we deliberately choose to obey Him, He will reach to the remotest star and to the ends of the earth to assist us with all of His almighty power.

Hon’ble Sir, In inviting reference to the above cited subject, we the undersigned leaders of Nagamese Common Language Department of NBCA would like to submit few lines of prayers for upliftment and implementation of Nagamese common language within the Naga inhabited areas for your kind consideration and prompt necessary action. That Sir, during the 8th NBCA Annual Conference at NBCA office compound Kuda Village. Dimapur on 30th Nov.2016, we the leaders of literature committee of NBCA would like to apprise you with few important suggestions before your kind authority for early implementation of the Nagamese common language. That Sir, no one can deny that the Nagamese language is the common language of Naga in Nagaland since the British-Indian Govt. and now the same language is widely spoken in all parts of Northeast as well as in Myanmar. India though a vast country with huge population having diffeient distinct features have recognized Hindi and English as its official language and it is to be stated here that though illiterate Nagas who do not know the said two languages have high regards and respect for it and the Nagas do not have any objection for the said two language recognized as the official language for the Country (India). And in the like of Hindi and English there is nothing wrong if Nagamese is recognized as the official common language of the Nagas where the Naga villagers, their leaders, GBs, Village Chiefs and Ahngs and the people at grassroot level will warmly welcome the new development if uplifted and implemented the Nagamese common language successfully. Or for the Naga common language if the Naga National workers and their respective leaders bring out or introduced the Nagamese as common language for the Nagas, we are sure that all section of people shall warmly welcome it. Besides that, among many VIPs in Naga inhabited areas, Sir, you are one of the leader who have time and again expressed your concern for the upliftment of the Nagamese common language through publication and

public speeches which are very important for the development of the language. It is also highly appreciated that hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri. Narendra Modi had taking keen interest in recognizing and tapping the important of Nagamese language to make it as a common language for the Nagas within the countryside. And it is a fact that Nagamese language is the only language where all section of Naga societies including the neighboring state and country communicate with each other. Therefore, the NBCA literature committee took this opportunity to brief you that, during your tenure, you will surely lay the foundation of the Nagamese language to be recognized as the official and common language in all the Naga inhabited areas with the help of the powerful prime minister of India Shri. Narendra Modi within a reasonable period of time. That Sir, it may not be out of place to mention here that Nagamese language is very much essential for the Nagas as a whole and the Nagas have no other language to substitute it for common communication. That Sir, it is worth to be mentioned here that, most of our Naga preachers while preaching the Gospel to the non Christian around the Naga country the only common language for communication was Nagamese language which has developed as the easiest language for the whole section of Nagas to understand and communicate with one another, And as such, the same Nagamese language must be uplifted and implemented as Naga common language as soon as possible. That Sir, in view of the few facts and its circumstances mentioned above, we hereby suggest the following for the upliftment and implementation of Nagamese language as Naga common language:1. There shall be only one Nagamese Bible and Nagamese song book for the whole churches in Naga inhabited areas. 2. There shall be only one Nagamese Dictionary and Grammar book. 3. That proper linguistic, alphabet and vocabulary should be worked out fairly and systematically in a very simple manner.

Framework agreement: Harbinger to Naga political solution! (From previous issue) Framework Agreement had influenced a new dynamism in the history of Naga, it has widen the avenue for cooperation between the two entities and both sides reaffirmed their resolve to strengthen their relationship in the highest level on the basis of Friendship, trust, and understanding for mutual benefit. Majority of the Naga People had democratically mandated in favor of the Naga solution with the coexistence of two separate powers with two nations. An intriguing facet of the Peace Accord popularly dubbed as the “Framework Agreement” though much write ups as well as poisonous abuse have been inundating in the press and social media. It is necessary for the true Naga to recognize that those who do not nurture any longing to settle down the Naga issue have different arithmetic such people are proximity to anti Naga and those who seed extremist ideologies reap a bitter harvest. The Naga must know that we have enter a decisive steps and unambiguous inclination in the recent few years

which firmly takes Naga steps ahead in her aspiration to be counted as one of the global attention, we must think that Naga solution is ordained for this 21st century makes her aspiration deserving. Naga people should also know that there can be no better platform to ponder our actions towards our goal if we missed this golden opportunity. The GOI has recognized the legal rights of the Nagas for integration and candidly proclaimed “No Integration No Solution”. Whether Nagas like it or not there is going to happen a win-win situation and transformation in the history of the Naga very soon, and we must not afford to miss these glorious moment. At this crucial stage when the whole Nagas are sincerely anticipating/ yearning for the final settlement there are some pocket of vested interest people trying their best possible to sabotage the Peace talk between the NSCN and GOI by projecting a new mechanism as “Nagas of Nagaland” and spreading a dangerous poison to convinced the people by their sinister appalling policy with a tagline “ The Content of

its FA” for their selfish desire to humiliate the most awaiting glorious day for the Nagas, but their vapid campaign will not deterred or shake the deep aspiration and dedication of the true Naga and the destiny of the Nagas which is now at the transition period to marked the glorious day. Naga should also thank and appreciate the NSCN for having internationalized the Naga Political issue to a great extend, they could withstand in establishing Naga in many International arena, viz. UNO,UNPO, embassy in USA, Thailand, Philippines, and Netherland in EU countries, to mobilize friends of Nagas at global level in support towards our Naga Political issue. God the almighty has been very gracious to the Naga people, ever since our leader set forth together to fight for the rights of the Nagas for the freedom of the Nagas to fight the occupational forces of India and Myanmar. From Simon commission in 1929 to the declaration of Naga Independent and also the May 16th, 1951. The hearing of Naga Plebiscite and Referendum supporting the freedom of the Nagas.

For this we civil societies and various Political leaders must steadfast and uphold the noble cause and stood firm as one people with one goal and also call upon all the Patriots of the NSCN to remain steadfast on the noble goal of bringing hope and happiness to the people who have long awaited for Peace and it is our bounden duty to respond full support and cooperation as a true citizen of Naga as a Patriotic noble duty. The Nagas are sure that NSCN will bring Peace and honorable negotiated settlement of the Naga goals. The Nagas should salute the Patriot, the Naga armies, the Naga leaders, who gave their life for the cause of the Naga nation and to the living soldiers, armies, leaders, who controlled the destiny of the Nagas, we pray that God will give wisdom and understanding to lead the Naga People, let us rededicate our self to the noble cause of the Naga freedom, reconciliation, unity and Peace to live a glorious life. KUKNALIM. (Concluded) Elian. Z. Lotha, (Elianzialotha77@gmail.com)

4. There shall be only one Nagamese Churches Association in all Naga inhabited areas covering Myanmar. 5. In order to implement effectively and to avoid any confusion, all the existing books written and printed in Nagamese language including the Bible and song books should be abolished/set aside and bring out a common language books based on proper and uniform structures of Nagamese language. domestic bullion market due to paucity of funds too weighed on sentiments, traders said. The government on November 8 had scrapped 500 and Rs 1,000 rupee notes to crack down on black money, leading to a cash crunch. “Buying activity remained at a low ebb even at prevailing levels”, said Rakesh Anand, a Delhibased jeweller. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity slumped by Rs 350 each to Rs 29,000 and Rs 28,850 per 10 grams, respectively -- a level last seen on June 1. The precious metal had lost Rs 100 in yesterday’s trade. Sovereign traded lower by Rs 50 at Rs 24,350 per piece of eight grams. Tracking gold, silver ready dropped by Rs 735 to Rs 40,700 per kg and weekly-based delivery by Rs 835 to Rs 40,000 per kg. On the other hand, silver coins, held steady at Rs 74,000 for buying and Rs 75,000 for selling of 100 pieces in scattered deals.

New Delhi, Dec 1 (PTI): Gold extended its slump for the second day and shed another Rs 350 to hit a six-month low of Rs 29,000 per 10 grams in the bullion market today amid weakening global trend and considerable fall in demand from jewellers at the domestic spot market. Silver went below the Rs 41,000-mark, tumbling by Rs 735 to Rs 40,700 per kg on reduced offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said sentiment was downbeat, largely in keeping with a weak global trend as the dollar surged to its highest in at least a decade against a basket of currencies on strong economic data and signs that the US Fed is inching towards increasing rates, eroded the metals’ appeal as safe-haven assets. Globally, gold fell 1.25 per cent to USD 1,173 an ounce in New York yesterday. Silver too dropped by 0.81 per cent to USD 16.48 an ounce. A falling demand from jewellers and retailers in the

The informal economy will take the shape of a formal one and the state would get more revenue since there would be no leakage, the minister pointed out referring to the impact of GST. “This will boost trade and commerce which in turn will help people at large,” he said. Bhubaneswar, Dec 1 (PTI): Rejecting apprehensions that the Indian economy would suffer due to demonetisation, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today termed as “game changers” the pulling out of high-value old notes as well as Goods and Services Tax, which is proposed to be rolled out from April 1. “I do believe that both (GST and demonetisation) will be game changers. This is because GST will ensure higher taxation as far as the Centre is concerned and also higher taxation for states. It is an efficient system. It blocks leakages. It will certainly help the consuming states like Odisha,” he said. Jaitley was speaking at the “Make in Odisha” conclave here. On the hue and cry over

England call Jennings, CSA wrestling, indoor sports meet concludes Dawson for India Tests L o nd o n , D e c 1 (Agencies): England have called up Keaton Jennings and Liam Dawson for the remaining two Tests against India. Durham opener Jennings is a straight replacement for Haseeb Hameed, who needs surgery on the broken finger he suffered during the third Test defeat in Mohali. Both players are due to arrive in Mumbai early next week ahead of the start of the fourth Test at the Wankhede Stadium on December 8, live on Sky Sports. England must win in Mumbai to stand any chance of avoiding a series defeat, having lost back-toback games in Vizag and Mohali. Jennings hopes he will be able to integrate into the squad quickly and will look to county team-mate Ben Stokes to ease the ‘getting to know you’ process. “To be going there as a member of the England squad, I’m going to have to introduce myself to a lot of new guys I guess - because a lot of them I only know as opposition,” Jennings said.

FC Goa beat Chennaiyin FC 5-4 in ISL

FC Goa players celebrate after scoring a goal.

M a r g a o, D e c 1 (Agencies): Sahil Tavora produced a gem of a finish, cutting in from the right and curling the ball past Karanjit Singh as FC Goa finished the Indian Super League on an excellent note, beating last-year’s champions Chennaiyin FC

5-4

The highest-scoring game in the history of ISL saw many twists and turns as five goals came in 40 minutes. FC Goa came back with a bang in the second half but a John Arne Riise penalty in the 86th minute leveled scores.

Tavora’s piece of magic deep into stoppage time helped the hosts bag three points but the win did not effect any changes in the table as Goa still finish last, and Chennayin, seventh. Sahil Tavora and Rafael Coelho got two goals each for Zico’s side. The most frenetic firsthalf of the season brought as many as five goals with Chennaiyin finishing with the lead in the game. Jerry Lalrinzuala’s beautiful curling free-kick put his side in the lead, and Coelho brought Goa back in the contest by finishing Joffre’s superbly threaded pass. The away side got their lead back after 13 minutes as the impressive

Anirudh Thapa’s shot from close range was helped into the net by Goa keeper Laxmikanth Kattimani. It was 2-2 at 22 minutes with Joffre converting from the spot with absolute disdain. Dudu’s powerful strike from just inside the area put Marco Matterazzi’s side in the lead again. The Nigerian striker could have had more as his 10th minute strike only found the post. On the other side of the break, Goa had an excellent passage of play going early into the half. Chennaiyin could have stretched their lead had Gregory Arnolin not pulled off an outstanding goalline clearance from Daniel Lahlimpuia’s shot.

The Guars rallied and Tavora made it 3-3 after tapping in Coelho’s deflected cut-back. With 15 minutes left for full-time, the sparse support went delirious as Coelho got his second. Yet again, the Brazilian striker showed terrific instinct to get on the end of a through ball. The Goan striker showed great composure to find the net. The drama did not end there and a needless hand-ball in the box from Raju Gaikwad helped Chennaiyin equalise. Local boy Tavora, though, had other ideas and shot from a mighty difficult angle, and the ball struck the post and found its way into the net.

Southgate confirms Rooney as England captain LONDON, Dec 1 (Agencies): England manager Gareth Southgate confirmed Wayne Rooney will remain captain on Thursday as he faced the media for the first time since his appointment on a permanent basis. Rooney, 31, apologised after being pictured looking the worse for wear as he mingled with wedding guests at the England team hotel in the early hours during the most recent in-

ternational break. Southgate had dropped him for a 0-0 World Cup qualifying draw in Slovenia, but recalled him for England’s 3-0 win over Scotland, before injury forced the Manchester United forward to withdraw from the squad. “Wayne Rooney is the England captain,” Southgate told reporters at Wembley. “I said that from the beginning of the interim period. What’s also clear is

that I’ve only selected him to start in two of the four matches we’ve had. “It is not a case that Wayne expects to play every game. It’s important we develop more leaders in that group. “When I played for England at Euro 96, there were leaders throughout the team. Wayne has played an important part up to this point, but we also need to develop others.”

Macau, Dec 1 (PTI): Top seed Saina Nehwal rallied to register another narrow victory over Indonesia’s Dinar Dyah Ayustine to reach the quarter-finals of the Macau Open Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament on Thursday. Former World No. 1 Saina bounced back from a game down to see off Ayustine 17-21, 21-18, 21-12 in a match which lasted over an hour in the women’s singles competition here. However, it was curtains for Parupalli Kashyap and men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy. Kashyap, who is on a comeback trail, put up a gallant fight before losing 13-21, 20-22 to Lin Yu Hsien of Chinese Taipei in a 45-minute duel.

Third seeds Manu and Sumeeth also fought hard before going down 20-22, 19-21 to Singapore’s Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Hendra Wijaya. In the women’s singles match, Saina blew a 11-7 lead in the opening game to see Ayustine move ahead and pocket the game. However, a determined Saina dished out a more dominating performance in the second game as she zoomed to a 11-3 lead at the break. In the decider, it was the Indonesian shuttler who held a slender 4-2 lead early on but Saina turned the tables at 5-5 and moved ahead, opening up a 11-8 lead at the interval. Saina then reeled off four points to extend the lead and eventually sealed the match with another fourpoint burst.
