DNSU alleges anomalies in Dimapur govt schools, DEO DIMAPUR, JUL 8 (NPN): Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has expressed astonishment at the alleged unfair practices prevailing at government schools in Dimapur district and District Education Office (DEO), which it claimed to have discovered during its surprise checks at the schools across the district. DNSU president Moayanger Jamir and general secretary Sedelo T Vadeo in a press release said they were not shocked but disappointed to find many schools still practising the system of keeping substitute teachers, having very low attendance of teachers
and some schools even failing to produce teachers’ attendance register when inquired. They also expressed surprise to note that some schools had excess teachers, resulting in an “imbalanced” teacher-student ratio, adding that some primary and middle schools were not at all student or child-friendly. They said they also noticed that some schools had very poor infrastructure, lacked school equipment and teachinglearning aid, while some even witnessed floods during the rainy season. They mentioned that they were very disappointed to notice that there no
proper implementation of schemes and projects meant for the welfare of students in many schools. Pointing out that PMPOSHAN (Mid-Day Meal scheme) was introduced to provide better nutrition to students of government, government-aided and local body-run schools on all working days, the duo however alleged that the scheme was not implemented properly in many schools. As per reports, they claimed that the DEO deducted the amount from the schools during quarterly disbursement of the Mid-Day Meal funds, which they felt was unreasonable, irrational and
inappropriate. Mentioning that the careers of students were at risk due such malpractices, they stressed that it was a serious problem that could not be ignored and left unattended. Adding to the dismay, they claimed that DNSU found out that dispatching of uniforms for students in government schools were yet to be done for 2022, while the previous years’ uniforms dispatched were of very poor quality material and the sizes were improper. Expressing utter disappointment, sadness and disillusionment over the State government’s alleged

SHILLONG, JUL 8 (PTI): The UDP, a partner of the ruling coalition in Meghalaya, has demanded action against state minister and BJP MLA Sanbor Shullai for allegedly “interrupting” its president and Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh during a recent meeting with NDA presidential nominee Droupadi Murmu, a party leader said on Friday. Leaders of the United Democratic Party alleged that Shullai behaved with Lyngdoh “unparliamentarily” while he was delivering his speech during the meeting and also sought Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s intervention to take action against him. The CM on Friday said he was aware of the concern raised by the UDP party functionaries and will act appropriately against Shullai who was charged of “unruly behaviour” during Murmu’s recent visit to the state. “I was there and saw what happened. It was not appropriate (to interrupt) at that point keeping in mind that the presidential candidate was present there. I had noted their (UDP leaders) concern. We will act appropriately,” Conrad
told PTI. Lyngdoh, the UDP president and the speaker, had attended the meeting convened by the BJP presidential election committee at a resort in Ri-Bhoi district on July 6. “In the middle of Metbah’s speech, Shullai interrupted which our party president and other leaders felt was uncivil and unruly. We would like to urge the BJP, which invited various political parties to the meeting with presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu, to take action against its legislator. We also want the CM to take appropriate action against Shullai,” UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh told PTI. The meeting was organised to seek support of the MLAs for Murmu
Sanbor Shullai in the July 18 presidential election. According to Mawthoh, Lyngdoh had raised various issues of “alleged persecution of the minorities, including Christians and tribals in the country under the present dispensation, the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, the Inner Line Permit for protection and safeguard of people of the state among others”. “We would like the BJP to first

NEW DELHI, JUL 8 (PTI): In a relief to TV news anchor Rohit Ranjan, the Supreme Court on Friday restrained various state authorities from taking coercive steps against him to take him in custody in connection with multiple FIRs for playing a doctored clip of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during the telecast of a programme on July 1. The interim protection to the news anchor came from a vacation bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and J K Maheshwari which also issued notices to the Centre and states of Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh seeking their responses on Ranjan’s plea for quashing of complaints or FIRs concerning the telecast. “Issue notice. Service on the Union of India be effected through the office of the Central Agency,” the bench said. “In the meanwhile, there will be an interim order restraining the respondent-authorities from taking coercive steps against the petitioner to take him into custody in connection with the anchoring/ telecast of DNA on July 1, 2022,” the top court said in its order. The apex court was hearing the plea of the anchor who is facing FIRs in some states. Ranjan later apologised and the news programme was withdrawn. Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing for Ranjan, told the bench that as of now, three FIRs have been registered at Jaipur, Raipur, and Noida. NEW DELHI, JUL 8 (PTI): India on Friday announced a day of mourning as a mark of respect to its “great friend” ex-Japanese premier Shinzo Abe, whom President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi described as a statesman and an outstanding leader. “I find it difficult to believe that Shinzo Abe is no more. He was a great statesman, and his infectious affability endeared him the world over. That he fell prey to an assassin’s bullet is a tragedy for the whole humanity. My heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Japan,” President Kovind said on Twitter. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu also said he was anguished by the demise of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. “Mr Abe played a crucial role in strengthening India-Japan ties. My deepest condolences to his family members and the people of Japan,” he said on Twitter. Modi recalled his personal association with Abe, whom he last met in May this year during his Japan visit, and said he was a towering global statesman, an outstanding leader, and a remarkable administrator, who dedicated his life to making Japan and the world a better place. Describing Abe as his “dear friend”, Modi said as a mark of India’s deepest respect, oneday national mourning shall

Fast lane risks
agaland’s first and only four-lane project along NH 29 appear to be besotted with problems such as delays and controversies. The road fatalities along the NH 29 is a cause for serious concern because there appears to be no proper monitoring and supervision by the contractor firms, the traffic police and due adherence to driving rules by drivers. The 4-lane project from Purana BazarChümoukedima-Kohima is undertaken by contractors - M/s Ramky – ECI (JV) and M/s Gayatri Projects Ltd . The construction work was originally scheduled to have been completed by September 2019. The deadline was extended to March 31, 2021, as cited by the Minister of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) Nitin Gadkari in reply to a question in Lok Sabha. The road project began in 2016 and its completion even by end of 2022 appears unlikely. Former governor R.N.Ravi had taken personal interest in the project so as to have it completed within 2020. He held several meetings with the officials of National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corp. Ltd (NHIDCL) along with state officials, contractors who won the bid including local sub-contractors. It may be pointed out that most four-lane projects in other states such as Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh have either met their deadline or not inordinately delayed as in the case with Nagaland. In Meghalaya the four-lane work between Guwahati-Shillong was completed in record time in 2015. The construction work began in 2013 and was to be completed by 2016. As rightly pointed out in the Lok Sabha by an MP, that portions of road(NH 29) that are completed have already developed potholes, which only shows very poor workmanship undertaken by sub-contractors. The tardy progress and poor workmanship are testing the patience of people especially the motorists. After one stretch is repaired the next year the other stretch gets damaged. This way, the NH 29 can never be totally completed. There have been many excuses but these cannot be used every time. The 4-lane construction over NH 29 is yet to be felt after Piphema towards Kohima. The stretch from Purana Bazar to Chümoukedima has become a driver’s hazard. Road mishaps have become almost a constant threat on the lives of commuters and motorists. Even within hardly a week, seven persons have died in two different road mishaps along the Purana Bazar- Chümoukedima stretch. Besides the strange fact that the width of the 4-lane is narrower at some stretch, there are more than 20 small roads intersecting the NH 29. This has been among the main causes of accidents. The other is that the four-lane lacks service roads. More often than not, vehicles including heavy vehicles are found parked at one of the lanes. This means that speeding vehicles have to ply on the right lane to avoid unforeseen parking that suddenly appear on left lane ahead. This adds to accident risks when drivers have to overtake to the left of the vehicle ahead. The surface of NH 29 is hard and uneven and ride not comfortable. The NHIDCL owes more than early completion of the 4-lane works on NH 29 as it has to also ensure that it continues to monitor the highway and ensure safety of motorists and commuters.
DailyDevotion Will To Be Faithful
…choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… —Joshua 24:15
A person’s will is embodied in the actions of the whole person. I cannot give up my will— I must exercise it, putting it into action. I must will to obey, and I must will to receive God’s Spirit. When God gives me a vision of truth, there is never a question of what He will do, but only of what I will do. The Lord has been placing in front of each of us some big proposals and plans. The best thing to do is to remember what you did before when you were touched by God. Recall the moment when you were saved, or first recognized Jesus, or realized some truth. It was easy then to yield your allegiance to God. Immediately recall those moments each time the Spirit of God brings some new proposal before you. “…choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve….” Your choice must be a deliberate determination— it is not something into which you will automatically drift. And everything else in your life will be held in temporary suspension until you make a decision. The proposal is between you and God— do not “confer with flesh and blood” about it (Galatians 1:16). With every new proposal, the people around us seem to become more and more isolated, and that is where the tension develops. God allows the opinion of His other saints to matter to you, and yet you become less and less certain that others really understand the step you are taking. You have no business trying to find out where God is leading— the only thing God will explain to you is Himself. Openly declare to Him, “I will be faithful.” But remember that as soon as you choose to be faithful to Jesus Christ, “You are witnesses against yourselves…” (Joshua 24:22). Don’t consult with other Christians, but simply and freely declare before Him, “I will serve You.” Will to be faithful— and give other people credit for being faithful too.

Single-use plastics ban: A big leap towards a better planet
I
n 2018, when India hosted World Environment Day on the theme Beat Plastic Pollution, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi gave a call for eliminating single-use plastics (SUP). A year later, in his Independence Day speech, PM Modi raised the issue again and said, “Can we free India from single-use plastic? The time for implementing such an idea has come. May teams be mobilised to work in this direction… Shopkeepers should sell jute and cloth bags. Customers should adopt ways to reduce plastic usage. We must also put technologies in use to abolish plastic usage.” There are very good reasons to stop using plastics. They harm the environment as well as the health of the people. Only a minuscule amount of plastics is recycled or destroyed in waste-to-energy facilities. Most end up in landfills, where they can take up to 1,000-plus years to decompose. Worse, plas-
F
tics release toxic substances that leach into the soil and water. As they decompose, plastic breaks down into tiny pieces that eventually become microplastics. Newer research shows the presence of microplastics in soils, freshwater, and even the air we breathe. This is a matter of grave concern. India’s call to eliminate SUPs provided momentum, leading to significant action on plastic pollution around the globe. This culminated in the historic adoption of ‘End Plastic Pollution: Towards an internationally legally binding instrument’ at the United Nations (UN) Environment Assembly meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, in March. The UN Environment Program’s executive director, Inger Andersen, called the agreement the most critical international multilateral environmental deal since the Paris climate accord. In India, the ban on SUPs began on July 1.
The ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEF) has also notified guidelines on the extended producer responsibility (EPR) for plastic packaging. The enforceable prescription of a minimum level of recycling of plastic packaging waste, collected under EPR by producers, importers, and brand owners, will strengthen the circular economy of plastic packaging waste. The EPR guidelines will also promote the development of new alternatives and give a push to sustainable plastic packaging. The guidelines also mandate the use of recycled plastic content in packaging. The step will generate demand for recycled plastic material. Questions have been raised on alternatives. The Modi gover nment believes that development should not come at the cost of the environment, and efforts to save the environment should not halt development. With that basic principle in mind and
PM Modi’s call for Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE), MoEForganised a national-level exhibition on alternatives to raise awareness. The states and Union territories (UTs) have been asked to organise similar fairs and provide incentives for an accelerated penetration of SUP alternatives. A provisional standard on biodegradable plastic has been notified. The ministry of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) has made a provision in central government schemes to support MSME units manufacturing alternatives. States and UTs have also been asked to provide incentives to accelerate the penetration of SUP alternatives. MoEF is working with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade to take forward innovative ideas on alternatives under the StartUp India Scheme. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has issued one-time certificates to around 200 manufactur-
ers of compostable plastic. In line with the Modi government’s ease of doing business policy, the certificates do not require renewal. An online portal has been developed to facilitate the certification of these manufacturers. To support MSMEs, CPCB in association with the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology (CIPET) is organising workshops for MSMEs to transition to SUP alternatives. Directions have been issued to e-commerce companies, leading sellers/users, and plastic raw material manufacturers on the ban. But the bid to save the environment can never achieve its desired results without janbhagidari (people’s participation). To encourage citizens, awareness drives are underway. CPCB has also undertaken comprehensive measures to make the SUP ban successful. Its Comprehensive Action Plan includes measures to reduce
Cementing Bangladesh & Northeast India relations for a win-win situation
ormer director-general of Indian NSG (National Security Guard), Jayanto Narayan Choudhury said recently that the security challenges India faced in its northeastern region have been controlled and managed, in part thanks to the enormous assistance Bangladesh has provided. It is true that Bangladesh played major role in ensuring peace in northeast India. Bangladesh is responsible for laying the foundation for a tranquil North East India. North East Indian provinces are gaining from those as regional states. Bangladesh has been crucial in the region’s efforts to reduce terrorism. North East India especially Assam has been liberated from separatism and extremism thanks to Bangladesh’s transfer of ULFA fighters to India. Bangladesh wants its neighbors to live in peace and harmony. Bangladesh rejects anarchy and turmoil. As a result, Bangladesh deserves to receive eternal gratitude from North East India. Conflicts on either the domestic or international front are disliked in Bangladesh. In order to achieve this, Bangladesh and the CHT militants signed the “Chittagong Hill Tract Peace Accord” in 1997. In the past, it also returned a number of Chakma refugees to their home country. Major security concerns that India has long had have already been addressed by Bangladesh. A substantial portion of the insurgents in India’s northeast have been turned up to India by Bangladesh. These insurgents were operating against India from Bangladeshi territory. The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) insurgent group member Major Anup Chetia caused the Indian security officials a lot of trouble. Additionally, Bangladesh turned him over to India. Bangladesh strictly forbade the activity of these terrorist and rebel organizations that receive support from abroad. Bangladesh truly wishes North East India well. This should be understood by all the North-East Indian regions, especially Assam. Nevertheless, Bangladesh and India share a border. India and Bangladesh enjoy a cordial, complex, and wide-ranging relationship. The 50th anniversary of bilateral ties is being commemorated by both nations. The other partner in this partnership is Assam. Bangladesh is bordered by five provinces of India, including Assam. Assam, the largest state in India’s Northeast Region (NER), and Bangladesh share about 263 kilometers of riverine and land border. The Indian government values Assam’s involvement in trade and commerce with Bangladesh given its size, population, and location. Assam is therefore crucial for Bangladesh. When External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited in Dhaka, Bangladesh, last month (in May, 20220 to extend an invitation to Sheikh Hasina for her upcoming New Delhi visit in September this year, Sheikh Hasina offered India the use of the Chittagong Port. The northeastern provinces of India, particularly Assam and Tripura, will benefit from the prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent offer to India. This is particularly important since there has long been a demand for connectivity between Bangladesh and mainland India’s northeast via multiple modes of transportation. In-depth conversations were held before efforts to increase capacity on railroads, highways, and waterways were started. Over the past few years, successful trial runs and transshipments have also taken place. West Bengal forms the bulk of the Bangladesh-India border. In terms of commercial operations, this Bengali-speaking
region of India dominates. The strength and potential of the bilateral trade relations between Bangladesh and North East India should be a priority for the North-Eastern Indian states, particularly Assam. This is something that Assam should pay close attention to. In South Asia, Bangladesh is experiencing an economic miracle. It is real. Therefore, strengthening the business relations between Assam and Bangladesh will be advantageous. Assam ought to take advantage of any prospective connections with Bangladesh. Growing connectivity and trade relations could be advantageous for Bangladesh. In this regard, Assam and Bangladesh can work together. The economic growth of Bangladesh can help Assam. For Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos, connectivity between Assam and Bangladesh may be advantageous. (Potential link between Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, and Thailand). Also Read: All dynasties need to pay attention after Shinde’s insurrection Given that Bangladesh is cut off from the northeastern region of India, transit across it is crucial. Because of this, it is necessary to foster cooperation in Bangladesh’s development. Southeast Asia will be accessible once Chittagong and Mongla ports are fully utilized. Railway, river, and aviation connectivity would improve the area. On the Bangladeshi side of the border, both parties should erect “Border Huts” where people can exchange a range of items for their home currencies. The ultimate winners would be people from both sides. Both governments anticipate that people will find this style of border cottage to be quite appealing. In the Dhubri area of Lower Assam, India and Bangladesh are permitted to construct border huts along the international boundary. Ultimately, using this will be advantageous to the residents of Sylhet and Assam. More land tariff stations can be built along the border between Bangladesh and Assam. This will promote and boost volume of landbased international trade. The land tariff stations at Sheola, Balla, and Bholaganj could increase and speed up cross-border trade. Bangladesh and Assam tourist exchange could be a potential industry. Through their borders, Bangladeshi visitors can travel to Assam. The historical linkages that once existed on the border between Assam and larger Sylhet should be strengthened. Reopening long-suspended rail, road, and river connections will improve connectivity between the two nations. Sutarkandi is the international border between Bangladesh and India and is well known for being a hub of international trade. Fruit, silicon, and coal exports are all carried out through this area. The location is in the Assam district of Karimganj. However, Assamese can visit places like Malini Chara Tea Garden, Bichana Kandi, Ratargul Swamp Forest, Jaflong, Shaha Jalal Dargah, Sri Mangal, etc. as tourist destinations. On March 9, 2021, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi jointly opened the Bangladesh-India “Goodwill Bridge,” noting that regional connectivity not only promotes the friendship between Bangladesh and India but also creates strong trade links. According to the Prime Minister of India, such a connection between Bangladesh and India would be crucial for trade between Bangladesh and North East India, especially Assam. The location is in the Assam district of Karimganj. However, Assamese can visit places like Malini Chara Tea Garden, Bichana Kandi, Ratargul Swamp Forest, Ja-

The National Dashboard on Elimination of Single-Use Plastic and Plastic Waste Management has also been set up to monitor the implementation of the plan. The ban is a significant step towards building a sustainable planet we can proudly hand over to the next generation. We can eliminate SUPs from our daily lives with everyone’s participation and combined efforts. Hardening his stand against the rebels, Thackeray asked how they can claim to love the ‘Matoshree’ and Thackerays if the dissidents align with those who have subjected him and his family to the worst kind of criticism and even attempted to “destroy his sons’ lives”. “According to the law, no one can take away the bow and arrow symbol from Shiv Sena. I am saying this after talking to constitutional experts,” he said. Rebel Shiv Sena MLA Gulabrao Patil had on Wednesday said the faction led by Shinde was the real claimant of the party’s ‘bow and arrow’ poll symbol. Seeking to assuage the concerns of his party workers, Thackeray said people do not just look at the party symbol while voting, but they also look at the person and also whether the candidate belongs to the Shiv Sena. The Shiv Sena as a political party and the legislature party are two separate
identities, he said, adding that even if just one, 50 or even 100 MLAs leave the party, it does not cease to exist. “Confusion is being created. Legislature party and registered party are two different identities. No one can take along the party workers with them,” Thackeray said. He also demanded mid-term elections in Maharashtra, saying that people should be allowed to take a stand on toppling of the MVA government led by him. “There should be midterm polls. If we have made a mistake, people will not favour us and that will be acceptable to us,” he said. Earlier this week, Sena leader Sanjay Raut claimed that his party will win over 100 seats if mid-term polls are held in the state. On Thursday, the rebel faction’s spokesperson had said that if there was any possibility of reconciliation with the parent party, then Thackeray should also talk to the BJP as the dissidents have aligned with that party. Thackeray hit out at the rebel group for keeping mum when the BJP targeted and “abused” him and his family in the last two-and-ahalf years. “You keep in touch with them and betray your own party like this,” he said without naming anyone. He wondered whether the rebel MLAs’ love for him and his family was real.

NEW DELHI, JUL 8 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Friday granted five-day interim bail to Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair in connection with an FIR lodged against him in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh for allegedly outraging religious sentiments. The top court also restrained Zubair from posting anything on Twitter with regard to the case, and asked him not to leave the jurisdiction of Delhi court. A vacation bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and JK Maheshari issued notice on Zubair’s plea and listed it for further hearing before a regular bench. It clarified that its interim bail order is with respect to the FIR lodged in Sitapur and has nothing to do with a case registered against him in Delhi. The bench clarified that it has not stayed the investigation in the case registered at Sitapur and police can seize laptop and other electronic gadgets, if required. During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government, said Zubair will remain in custody as per the order of the Delhi court. He said there was wilful suppression of facts by Zubair that his bail plea has been rejected by the Sitapur

court on Thursday and he has been in police custody by the speaking order of the court. An FIR was lodged against Zubair in Uttar Pradesh under IPC section 295A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings) and section 67 of the IT Act here on a complaint by Hindu Sher Sena Sitapur district president Bhagwan
Sharan on June 1. Zubair was arrested by the Delhi Police on June 27 for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through one of his tweets. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for the investigating officer in the Uttar Pradesh matter, said a prime facie case is made out under section 295 (A) of IPC (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and under section 153A (promoting enmity between groups). He said the act of Zubair publicly calling seers as “hate mongers” has potential to outrage religious feelings of a particular community and incite violence.

NEW DELHI, JUL 8 (PTI): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) Friday said it has slapped a total penalty amount of more than Rs 61 crore against Amnesty India and its former head Aakar Patel for contravening the Indian foreign exchange law. The federal probe agency show caused Amnesty India International Pvt. Ltd (AIIPL) with a penalty notice, issued under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), of Rs 51.72 crore, while the fine amount against Patel is Rs 10 crore. The order has been issued on completion of the probe by the adjudicating authority of FEMA, which is a special director rank officer of the ED. The agency alleged London-based Amnesty International sent huge amount of foreign contribution to its Indian entities (AIIPL), during November 2013 to June 2018, “in guise of business activities” to escape FCRA scrutiny”. FCRA stands for foreign contribution regulation Act. The agency said it initiated a FEMA probe on the basis of information that Amnesty International, UK had been remitting “huge amount” of foreign contribution through its Indian entities (non-FCRA companies) following FDI (foreign

MUMBAI, JUL 8 (PTI): Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Friday said nobody can take away his party’s ‘bow and arrow’ symbol, a remark made in the wake of the rebel Sena faction’s assertion that it was the real claimant of the symbol. Addressing reporters at his residence ‘Matoshree’ in suburban Bandra, he also dared the party rebels and the BJP to face mid-term elections in Maharashtra, saying that people should be allowed to take a stand on the toppling of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by him. He said if people do not favour his party in the elections, he would accept it. Thackeray said the Supreme Court’s verdict on the disqualification plea of 16 rebel MLAs scheduled to be given on July 11 will decide not just the future of the Shiv Sena, but also of Indian democracy. Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde - now the chief minister of Maharashtra - had last month raised a banner of revolt against the party leadership, a move that subsequently led to the fall of the MVA government comprising Sena, NCP and Congress. A day after Thackeray resigned as the state chief minister on June 29, Shinde took oath of the top post with BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis being sworn in as his deputy. Shinde enjoys the support of 40 rebel MLAs

BUSINESS/STATE Tata Motors global wholesales During the meeting, up 48% in Q1 the industry had informed
Traders asked to cut edible oil prices
NEW DELHI, JUL 8 (PTI): The government on Friday said it expects more companies to reduce maximum retail prices of cooking oils by up to Rs 15 per litre to pass on the benefit of fall in global commodity prices to consumers. Amid cooking oil prices ruling high in the domestic market, the government on Wednesday directed edible oil companies to reduce the prices. Following the directive, Mother Dairy, on Thursday, reduced the prices of soyabean and rice bran oil up to Rs 14 per litre. It expects a reduction of MRP of sunflower oil in the next 15-20 days. Mother Dairy, which is one of the leading milk suppliers in Delhi-NCR, sells edible oils under the Dhara brand. India meets 60 per cent of its requirement of edible oils through imports. “Some companies
which have not reduced their prices and whose MRP (Maximum Retail Price) is higher than other brands have also been advised to reduce their prices,” the Food and Consumer Affairs Ministry said in a statement on Friday. Stating that the government is continuously monitoring the prices and availability of edible oils in the country, the ministry said it is imperative that the benefit of reduced duty structure on edible oils and the continuous significant drop in global prices be immediately passed on to the end consumers without fail. “The consumers can look forward to saving some extra money in their kitchen budget,” it noted. In the July 6 meeting, the ministry said the manufacturers and refiners were informed that a downward trend in international prices of imported edible oils is a “very positive picture”.
Therefore, the domestic edible oil industry needs to ensure that the prices in the domestic market also drop commensurately. And, this price drop has to be passed on to the consumers expeditiously and not in a “laggard fashion”, it said. In the July 6 meeting, the manufacturers and refiners were asked to reduce the price of cooking oils sold to distributors immediately so that the price drop is not diluted in anyway, it said. The ministry said it was also impressed upon the companies that whenever a reduction in price to distributors is made by the manufactures/refiners, the benefit should be passed on to the consumers by the industry. The issues like price data collection, control order on edible oils and packaging of edible oils were also discussed during the meeting on Wednesday.
that the global prices of different edible oils have fallen by USD 300-450 per tonne in the last one month but it takes time to reflect in the retail markets and the retail prices are expected to come down in the coming days, according to the statement. In May, Fortune brand had reduced MRP of refined sunflower oil, soyabean oil and kachi ghani oil by Rs 10 per litre after the government directive to manufacturers and refiners to pass on the fall in global edible oil prices to consumers. According to the ministry, the reduction in edible oil prices came in the wake of a cut in the import duty. The edible oil prices in the international market are witnessing a dramatic fall, however, the situation in the domestic market is slightly different as the fall in the prices are gradual, it said.
NEW DELHI, JUL 8 (PTI): Tata Motors on Friday said its global wholesales, including that of Jaguar Land Rover, rose 48 per cent to 3,16,443 units in the first quarter of the current fiscal. The auto major had dispatched 2,14,250 units to dealers in the April-June quarter of 2021-22. Global wholesales of all Tata Motors’ commercial vehicles and Tata Daewoo range in the first quarter stood at 1,03,529 units as compared with 52,470 units a year ago, the company said in a statement. The company’s global sales of all passenger vehicles were at 2,12,914 units, up from 1,61,780 units in June quarter of FY22. Global wholesales of JLR stood at 82,587 units. Jaguar wholesale units for the period under review stood at 14,596 vehicles, while Land Rover wholesales stood at 67,991 units.
NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, JULY 9, 2022
Ex-NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant named India’s new G20 Sherpa NEW DELHI, JUL 8 (AGENCIES): The government has decided to appoint former NITI Aayog chief executive Amitabh Kant as India’s Sherpa for the G20 grouping. Kant will replace commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal, who offered to shed this role due to his mounting workload. Given that India is assuming the G20 presidency later this year, a full-time Sherpa who can devote a lot of time for the job is required, a source told FE. This has prompted the government to appoint Kant, whose six-year term at the NITI Aayog ended on June 30, Financial Express reported. Apart from handling a number of critical ministries (commerce, industry, textiles, food and consumer affairs), Goyal is also the leader of the Rajya Sabha. With the monsoon session
Amitabh Kant of Parliament expected to start later this month, Goyal’s foreign travel is set to get curtailed, which would affect his work as the Sherpa. Moreover, he has been spearheading free trade agreement negotiations with key economies, including the EU, the UK, Canada, Israel and Australia. In light of these, Goyal, who was appointed the Sherpa in September last year, had offered to step down from this role, said the source. A Sherpa is typically
a personal representative of the leader of a member nation at the G20 and some other groupings. The Sherpa usually engages in planning, negotiation and implementation of tasks through the G20 Summit. They help prepare the agenda, drum up consensus at the highest levels, and take part in a series of pre-summit consultations to negotiate their leaders’ positions. A 1980-batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, Kant had served as the secretary of the erstwhile Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (currently DPIIT), where he spearheaded initiatives such as Start-up India. At the NITI Aayog, he was instrumental in firming up a series of production-linked incentive schemes to spur domestic manufacturing and boost growth in the wake of the pandemic.

Shinzo Abe murder: Alleged killer A timeline of the career of Shinzo Abe Tetsuya Yamagami reveals reason
TOKYO, JUL 8 (AP): Born into a prominent political family, Shinzo Abe, who was fatally shot at a campaign event Friday in western Japan, had been the country’s longest-serving prime minister. While credited with bringing a degree of stability to Japan following a period of economic malaise and constant turnover among leaders, Abe angered neighbours South Korea and China — along with many Japanese — with his nationalistic rhetoric and calls to revise the country’s pacifist constitution. Here is a look at some key dates in Abe’s life and career. Sept. 21, 1954: Abe is born in Tokyo, the son of Shintaro Abe, who served as Japan’s foreign minister, and grandson of Nobusuke Kishi, a former prime minister. 1977: Graduates from Seikei University in Tokyo with a degree in political science, after which he moves to the U.S. to study public

policy at the University of Southern California for three semesters. 1979: Begins working at Kobe Steel as the firm was expanding its presence abroad. 1982: Leaves the company to pursue new positions at the Foreign Ministry and with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. 1993: First elected as a LDP legislator representing the southwestern prefecture of Yamaguchi. Abe, already viewed as a conservative, becomes a member of and
eventually leads the party’s largest faction, Seiwakai, that had once been headed by his father, who died in 1991. 2005: Abe is appointed chief cabinet secretary under Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, during which he leads negotiations to return Japanese citizens abducted to North Korea. The same year, he is elected head of the LDP, putting him in line to take over as prime minister. Sept. 26, 2006: Abe becomes Japan’s prime min-
ister for the first time, overseeing economic reforms while taking a hard line on North Korea and seeking to engage with South Korea and China. 2007: Following electoral defeats that saw the LDP lose control of the legislature for the first time in 52 years, Abe resigns as prime minister, citing health reasons. Abe has been suffering from ulcerative colitis but was able to control it with medication. 2012: After again being elected LDP president, Abe becomes prime minister for the second time. 2013: Seeking to boost growth, Abe launches his “Abenomics” policies featuring easy lending and structural reforms. Japan’s relations with China undergo a particularly rough patch but begin to improve after Abe meets with Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the APEC summit in Beijing. 2014-2020: Re-elected
LDP leader, he serves two additional terms as prime minister for a total of four, during which he develops close relations with thenpresident Donald Trump, holding summits and golfing together. Aug. 28, 2020: Announces he will step down as prime minister, again citing health reasons, after his ulcerative colitis flares up again. By that point, Abe had already become Japan’s longest-serving prime minister. 2021: Despite leaving office, Abe shows he can still rile up Beijing with comments on Taiwan, the self-governing island China claims as its own territory and threatens to attack. In a speech, Abe warned that “military adventure would lead to economic suicide.” July 8, 2022: Abe is fatally shot while giving a speech at a campaign event in the city of Nara. Police arrest a male suspect but no motive was immediately known.

He was rushed to the hospital after sustaining a bullet wound in his chest and succumbed to his injuries hours later. Now, the local police have said that Tetsuya Yamagami revealed the reason behind shooting Shinzo Abe during the political rally. According to local media reports from Japan, Yamagami said dur-

Further, the Nara City police said that Yamagami “held a grudge against a particular organisation, and that he committed the crime because he believed former prime minister Abe had a connection to it.” Though not much has been revealed about the killer and his motives for killing the former PM, Yamagami was reportedly not satisfied with the political standpoint of Shinzo Abe. More details regarding Tetsuya’s interrogation are yet to be revealed.

of electing his successor is completed. “In politics no one is remotely indispensable and our brilliant and Darwinian system will produce another leader equally committed to taking this country forward through tough times,” Johnson said in his resignation speech on Thursday on the steps of Downing Street. A timetable for the Tory leadership race is due
to be confirmed next week by the party’s 1922 Committee and the new Prime Minister is expected to be in place at 10 Downing Street by September. “I am putting together a broad coalition of colleagues that will bring new energy and ideas to government and, finally, to bridge the Brexit divide that has dominated our recent history,” Tugendhat, a former soldier, writes in ‘The
Daily Telegraph’ about his leadership bid. “I have served before – in the military, and now in Parliament. Now, I hope to answer the call once again as prime minister. It’s time for a clean start. It’s time for renewal,” said the MP for Tonbridge and Malling in south-east England. The 49-year-old is considered a strong contender for the post of Prime Minister as a
member of the One Nation Group of Conservatives, with the backing of a considerable group of his party colleagues. Shapps, meanwhile, has been described as a “great choice” for leader by Robert Courts, a minister in his department, who said the party needed someone “who has experience” and is “able to campaign”, a reference to Shapps’ former role as Tory party chairman.

Palestinian prez, Israeli PM hold 1st call
Mahmoud Abbas and Yair Lapid
RAMALLAH, JUL 8 (AP): Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday received a call from Israel’s caretaker prime minister, Yair Lapid, the first such conversation between Abbas and an Israeli premier in years. The call came amid a rare flurry of high-level Israeli-Palestinian contacts ahead of President Joe Biden’s visit to Israel and the occupied West Bank next week. The talks focused on calming tensions and coordinating security
ahead of the visit. A statement from Lapid’s office said he spoke with Abbas about “the continuation of cooperation and the need to ensure quiet and calm.” Hussein al-Sheikh, a senior Abbas aide, said Lapid congratulated Abbas on Eid al-Adha, a Muslim holiday starting Saturday, and “discussed the latest situation briefly,” without elaborating. Abbas received Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz at his headquar-
ters in the occupied West Bank town of Ramallah on Thursday and also spoke to Israeli President Isaac Herzog by phone. The peace process collapsed more than a decade ago. High-level meetings between Israeli and Palestinian leaders are rare and tend to focus on day-to-day economic and security coordination. Gantz met with Abbas a couple of times last year and announced measures to improve economic conditions in the occupied West Bank. Lapid and Gantz, both centrists, are serving in a caretaker capacity ahead of elections planned for Nov 1, in which religious and nationalist parties that take a hard line toward the Palestinians are expected to retain their majority in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament.

After asserting full
control of Luhansk, Putin said Russian forces would have a chance to rest and recoup, but other parts of eastern Ukraine have come under sustained bombardment. The Russian leader warned Kyiv it should quickly accept Moscow’s terms or brace for the worst. “Everybody should know that largely speaking, we haven’t even yet started anything in earnest,” Putin said while speaking with leaders of the Kremlin-controlled parliament Thursday. Ukraine’s presidential office said Friday that at least 12 civilians were killed and another 30 wounded by Russian shelling over the last 24 hours. six people killed and 21 wounded. In northeast Ukraine, another four people were k i l l e d a n d n i n e we r e wounded in Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city, where Russian shelling hit residential areas. Commenting on Putin’s ominous statement, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Russian leader was reacting to statements by Ukraine’s government and its Western allies about defeating Russia on the battlefield. “Russia’s potential is so big that just a small part of it has been used in the special military operation,” “ Peskov told reporters Friday. “And so Western statements are utterly absurd and just add to the grief of the Ukrainian people.”

P O K R O V S K (UKRAINE), JUL 8 (AP): A Ukrainian regional official warned Friday of deteriorating living conditions in a city captured by Russian forces two weeks ago, saying Sievierodonetsk is without water, power or a working sewage system while the bodies of the dead decompose in hot apartment buildings. Gov. Serhiy Haidai said the Russians were unleashing indiscriminate artillery barrages as they try to secure their gains in eastern Ukraine’s Luhansk province. Moscow this week claimed full control of Luhansk, but the governor and other Ukrainian officials said their troops retained a small part of the province. “Luhansk hasn’t been fully captured even though

all other variants by the end of July.” In April, the EMA already advised people aged 80 and above to get a second booster vaccine. Now, Cavaleri repeated that message and also suggested a second booster for those aged from 60 to 79, as well as medically vulnerable people of any age. “Although there is no evidence that the variants make people sicker than earlier strains of the virus, the increase in transmission among older age groups is starting to translate into severe diseases,” Cavaleri said.
“As this new wave is unfolding across Europe, it is essential to maintain the protection of vulnerable groups and avoid any postponement of vaccination.” The EMA is open to various next-generation Covid vaccines and willing to consider those adapted to the currently predominant Omicron subvariants. However, these vaccines could come too late for the autumn vaccination campaigns planned by the EU member states, according to Cavaleri. The EMA therefore indicated a preference so far for vaccines already authorized. “The authorized vaccines still give good protection against increased hospitalization, severe illness and death,” Cavaleri said.

‘The Godfather’ star James Caan dies at 82
I
n a year when the world is celebrating the golden jubilee of ‘The Godfather’, James Caan, one of the film’s many actors who’ll never be forgotten, passed away on Wednesday (U.S. Pacific Time), according to an announcement by his family on Twitter. Best remembered for playing Sonny Corleone, the hotheaded, loose-fisted son of the Don, played by Marlon Brando, but with a very busy post-Sonny filmography, Caan was 82 when he breathed his last. “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6,” the brief tweet reads, according to ‘Variety’. “The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and
asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.” Caan also had substantial roles in other notable films, including ‘Misery’, ‘Elf ’, ‘Thief ’, ‘Godfather Part II’, ‘Brian’s Song’ and ‘The Gambler’, notes ‘Variety’, adding that Sonny’s violent end
in a vendetta killing in Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic movie -- “riddled, as he is, with dozens of bullets -- is one of the most memorable scenes in a film filled with them”. Caan, according to ‘Variety’, initially auditioned for the role of Michael, the college-educated war-hero son who would ultimately become Don, and the studio, Paramount, supported this casting for a time, but Al Pacino, as we all know, was cast as Michael and Caan as Sonny “as part of a complex compromise between Paramount and Coppola”. Coppola and Caan, incidentally, were classmates at Hofstra University, where the Bronx-born James Edmund Caan went after studying at Michigan
State University (he played American football for the university team). Caan, who was working till 2013 and even lent his voice to ‘The Godfather’ video games, would repeatedly essay characters with a penchant for violence, notes ‘Variety’. His most notable decade, though, was the 1970s. In addition to ‘The Godfather’, to quote from ‘Variety’, Caan’s signature films from the 1970s include Mark Rydell’s ‘Cinderella Liberty’ (1973), in which he played a sailor in love with a hooker; Karel Reisz’s ‘The Gambler’ (1974), where he played a man with a serious addiction for the roll of the dice; the Sam Peckinpah actioner, ‘The Killer Elite’ (1975), a story of CIA assassins that reunited him
with Robert Duvall, Tom Fagan of ‘The Godfather’; musical romantic comedy ‘Funny Lady’ (also 1975), with Barbra Streisand and Omar Sharif; Norman Jewison’s satirical, dystopian sci-fi drama ‘Rollerball’, where he played a popular athlete in a violent sport based on roller derby often ending in death; Alan J. Pakula’s romantic Western, ‘Comes a Horseman’, in which Caan starred with Jane Fonda and Jason Robards; and the Neil Simon-penned ‘Chapter Two’, in which a seemingly uncomfortable Caan was essentially a stand-in for Simon in the story of how he got together with second wife Marsha Mason, playing in the film by none other than Marsha Mason. Netflix backs Johnny Depp’s film comeback post-defamation trial
S
treaming giant Netflix is helping finance Hollywood star Johnny Depp’s movie comeback following his much-publicised defamation trial against ex-wife and actress Amber Heard that he eventually won. According to aceshowbiz.com, the 59-year-old will portray King Louis XV in the French-language film ‘La Favorite’, which was previously reported to be titled ‘Jeanne du Barry’. Netflix has acquired the rights to stream the film in France, people familiar with the deal tell Bloomberg. The acquisition of the film’s rights will be used by the producers to help finance the production. Under the deal, the period piece will be hitting the streamer 15 months following its
theatrical release. Netflix, however, does not have the rights to stream the movie in other territories and is not involved in the making of the picture. Directed by Maiwenn Le Besco, La Favorite will tell the story of Jeanne Becu, an impoverished seamstress who rises through the ranks of Louis XV’s court to become his official mistress. Le Besco also stars as Jeanne
Becu. Though the real Louis XV ruled over France for nearly 59 years, he “died as an unpopular king...accused of corruption and debauchery,” Variety wrote in January. Filming is scheduled to start later this summer across France and will last for about three months. The movie is expected to be ready for theatrical release in the country in 2023. La Favorite will mark Depp’s first acting role since he won the defamation case. The Pirates of the Caribbean star was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages after the jury found his ex-wife Heard guilty of defaming him. The same jury awarded $2 million to the Aquaman actress who made similar claims against Depp. (IANS)
‘Life’s essential 8’ components of heart health and improve it.” Adults should average seven to nine hours of sleep a night, the advisory says. For children, the amount varies by age. Lloyd-Jones, who led the creation of the original seven categories in 2010, said sleep’s importance was clear even then. But it was difficult to agree on how to score it, because sleep information wasn’t being collected in large national databases. “Now it is,” he said, and “the science has shown us how sleep is part and parcel of cardiovascular health.” The advisory notes that both too much and too little sleep are associated with heart disease and that poor sleep health is linked to poor psychological health, an important driver of heart disease. “And of course, sleep affects all the other seven metrics here as well,” LloydJones said.
Cheryl Anderson, dean of the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at the University of California San Diego, called Life’s Essential 8 “a big deal” both for health care professionals and people who want to understand their cardiovascular health. Anderson, who co-wrote the advisory, said the update is “a really good recognition of how science has changed, and our ability to adapt according to the changes.” The revisions introduce a 100-point measure of heart health, which can be taken online at www.heart.org/lifes8. The new score replaces a 14-point scale and tweaks several of the original categories. On smoking, for example, the old measure considered only traditional cigarette use. The new score includes nicotine use and exposure from e-cigarettes, as well as
the effects of secondhand exposure. The new score also shifts from emphasizing total cholesterol in favor of measuring non-HDL cholesterol. It’s now calculated by subtracting “good” HDL cholesterol from total cholesterol, leaving just a measurement of the “bad” types of cholesterol. The new tool also expands how blood glucose can be evaluated. The system allows for more precise evaluation of exercise levels, Lloyd-Jones said. And it looks at diet in a new way. “Before, we had five very clunky yes-or-no metrics to say whether someone had a healthy diet or not. And that wasn’t really appropriate for all different types of eating patterns and cultures.”
closely someone follows a Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, or DASH, type of diet. But although the measure broadens the foods evaluated, people shouldn’t focus on single items, Anderson said. “We want to think about the whole package. There is no one food or nutrient that will completely overhaul one’s cardiovascular health.” Some key components of heart health, such as stress, are not part of the new score. “Stress is real,” LloydJones said. “It’s an important part of all of our lives. But it’s hard to measure how we internalize that stress, and what the effect is on our health status.” Heart Illustration The advisory discusses Browse through our the importance of both psymedical image collection to see illustrations of human anatomy and physiology Anderson said the new diet component rates how
chological health and the societal and environmental factors known as the social determinants of health, which include whether someone has access to healthy food, medical care or a safe place to exercise. But although Lloyd-Jones called them “foundational” for heart health, he said such factors couldn’t be boiled down into something that fit the scoring system. The old scoring system sorted responses in its seven categories as either “poor,” “intermediate” or “ideal.” Fewer than 1% of people in the U.S. across all age groups reached the overall “ideal” level, primarily because of diet, the advisory says. But for people who want to improve their heart health, the new approach makes
progress easier to see. “The positive changes don’t have to be really big,” Anderson said. “They can be moderate. And you can still get credit for it within this new approach.” Good heart health begins with talking with a doctor to know how you’re doing in all eight categories, Lloyd-Jones said. Improvement in any of them helps. “If I have three or four things of the eight that are suboptimal that I could work on, do I need to tackle three or four at once? Absolutely not,” he said. “The data show us that picking and improving one thing will actually have a measurable impact on improving your health and improving
your h e a l th outcomes.” So people shouldn’t feel overwhelmed, he said. “It doesn’t really matter which one you pick. Pick the one that you’re going to succeed on. And that’s the way to move your cardiovascular health forward.” (By Michael Merschel, American Heart Association News)

P
roper sleep is essential, and a widely used scoring system for heart and brain health is being redefined to reflect that. Since 2010, the American Heart Association has said seven modifiable components – maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, being physically active, eating a healthy diet and controlling blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar – were key to ideal cardiovascular health. T h o s e co m p o n e n t s , dubbed Life’s Simple 7, became a common way for doctors and patients to rate and discuss heart and brain health. It’s also been a key research tool, used in more than 2,500 scientific papers. Sleep duration joins those seven original metrics in a revised scoring tool, now called Life’s Essential 8, which published Wednesday as an AHA presidential advisory in the journal Circulation. The update is about much more than adding sleep, said AHA president Dr. Donald Lloyd-Jones, who led the expert panel that wrote the advisory. The new score incorporates 12 years of research and enhances its evaluation of diet, exercise and more. “We’re hoping that this will, in fact, be a moment of empowerment, a moment of optimism for people to think positively about their health,” said Lloyd-Jones, a cardiologist, epidemiologist and chair of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. “And this is a good way for them to measure it today, monitor it over time and focus on ways to maintain

Earlier, Australia won the toss, opted to bat first and fielded the same side as the first Test but Sri Lanka were forced to make four changes after a Covid outbreak in their camp. Allrounder Kamindu Mendis and spin duo Prabath Jayasuriya and Maheesh Theekshana made their Test debuts for the hosts. The hosts got off to a good start with Kasun Rajitha providing them with an early breakthrough when he knocked off David Warner’s off stump in the fifth over of the day. Pairing with Ramesh Mendis and debutant Prabath Jayasuriya, Rajitha kept the Australians in check with his probing line and length. Mendis dismissed Usman Khawaja in the 22nd over just when the second-wicket partnership had started to grow.

At 70/2, the match seemed evenly balanced. However, with no demons in the pitch, it was only a matter of time before the Australia batters took back control of the game. Leading the way was Marnus Labuschagne, who did not take long after the lunch break to bring up a wonderful fifty. He accelerated upon reaching the milestone, racing towards triple figures. The second session was completely dominated by the visitors and Steve Smith proved to be the perfect partner for Labuschagne’s antics. The latter brought up his fourth Test century, his first outside of Australia with a gentle single to mid-wicket.
Niroshan Dickwella, who had missed a stumping chance to dismiss Labuschagne for 28 earlier in the day, made amends when he whipped off the bails of the advancing batter to give Prabath Jayasuriya his maiden Test wicket. Labuschagne departed for 104 (156) with Australia going to tea at 204/3. However, the wicket did little to dampen Steve Smith’s spirits as the veteran batter dropped in anchor. The experienced batter kept Australia in control. Two brief partnerships with Travis Head and Cameron Green followed but with Smith in the picture, Sri Lanka could not wrest back control of the game.

GUYANA, JUL 8 (IANS): West Indies skipper Nicholas Pooran smashed an unbeaten 74 off just 39 balls, embellished with five maximums, as the hosts romped to an easy five-wicket victory over Bangladesh with 10 balls to spare to complete a 2-0 T20 International series win at the Providence Stadium on Friday (IST). The 26-year-old lefthander played an array of superb strokes on both sides of the wicket as he made his fourth T20I half-century in his last five innings. Set a challenging target of 164 in the final contest, Pooran ended the match in grand style with a magnificent straight six and held the pose for emphasis. He was named the ‘Player of the Match’ and ‘Man of the Series’. Opener Kyle Mayers added 55 off 38 balls at the top of the order, combining with Pooran in a record 85run fourth-wicket partnership to pull the run chase around from a 43/3 in the K Y M C

The win came on the heels of a 35-run victory for the West Indies at Windsor Park in Dominica, after the opening game at the same venue was rained off as a no-result. The two teams will now play a three-match ODI series beginning at the Guyana National Stadium on July 10. Brief scores: Bangladesh 163/5 in 20 overs (Litton Das 49, Afif Hossain 50; Hayden Walsh 2/25) lost to West Indies 169/5 in 18.2 overs (Mayers 55, Pooran 74 not out) by five wicket.

As of now, all the matches are to be played at the Harare Sports Club in the capital city and the Indian team is expected to arrive in Harare on August 15, a Cricbuzz report said. “It’s a big opportunity for the players to play against the Indian players and for the cricketing
fraternity in Zimbabwe. It will create a lot of interest amongst the younger generation to take up this game. Overall, the series is very good for Zimbabwe cricket,” said Lalchand Rajput, the former coach of the side, who has now been re-designated as the Technical Director. On the other hand, Dave Houghton is the head coach of the Craig Ervin-led side. The tour to Zimbabwe is the first for India in six years. The last time India was there was when MS Dhoni-led side had played three ODIs and as many T20Is in June-July 2016.

NEW DELHI, JUL 8 (IANS): India cricket team will tour Zimbabwe for a three-match ODI series next month. The three matches, part of the ICC One-Day Super League and tentatively scheduled for August 18, 20 and 22 respectively are important for the home team as the points from the series will count towards the qualification for next year’s ODI World Cup. However, these are not as important for India, the hosts of the event, as they had directly qualified for the mega-event taking place in October 2023. Notably, the six ODIs India are slated to play back-to-back this month,

SOUTHAMPTON, JUL 8 (IANS): A smashing halfcentury from all-rounder Hardik Pandya (51 off 33 balls) backed up by his superb bowling efforts (4/33 in 4 overs) gave India a huge 50-run win against England in the opening T20 International -- a day-night game -- at The Rose Bowl here late on Thursday. Pandya carried his sublime form from the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the recently-concluded series against Ireland into the game against England, guiding the visitors to a massive 198/8 in 20 overs, before returning to bowl a fiery spell that saw the hosts bundled out for 148 in 19.3 overs. Pa n dya p i c k e d u p where the top order left off, joining Suryakumar Yadav (39 off 19) in the blitz, keeping the run rate above 10-anover in the crucial middle phase. Pandya then returned with the ball to account for the dangerous opener Jason Roy (4), Dawid Malan (21), (Liam Livingstone 0) and Sam Curran (4) as England under new captain Buttler found the going tough from the start of their innings. formance, and players like Deepak Hooda too contributing in a big way, it bodes well for the team as it prepares for the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia later this year. Deepak Hooda’s 33 (17) shows his form in Ireland was no flash in the pan, with the Dinesh Karthik career renaissance providing the side with another finisher at the side’s disposal. On the bowling side, Yuzvendra Chahal continues to look imposing. Claiming Harry Brook (28 off 23) and Moeen Ali (36 off 20), the leg-spinner curtailed any chance of an English fight back. As his red-ball com-
patriots ride the wave of a successful start under Brendon McCullum, it wasn’t to be for Buttler as the new T20I white-ball captain fell to the defeat and fell for a first-ball duck in the chase. The right-hander was set up by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, with the swing bowler’s first four deliveries moving away from Jason Roy, only for Buttler’s first to hoop in and dismantle the stumps. BRIEF SCORES: India 198/8 in 20 overs (Deepak Hooda 33, Suryakumar Yadav 39, Hardik Pandya 51) beat England 148 in 19.3 overs (Moeen Ali 36; Hardik Pandya 4/33, Yuzvendra Chahal 2/32, Arshdeep Singh 2/18) by 50 runs.
Djokovic beats Norrie to reach Malaysia Masters: Prannoy beats Tsuneyama to enter semis Wimbledon men’s singles final
Novak Djokovic celebrates after beating Cameron Norrie, Friday. (AP/PTI)
LONDON, JUL 8 (AGENCIES/REUTERS): Britain’s Cameron Norrie was unable to capitalise on a confident start as Novak Djokovic fought back to reach the Wimbledon men’s singles final. Norrie, 26, was bidding to become only the fourth Briton to reach the final at the All England Club in the Open era. But after winning the first set, he lost 2-6 6-3 6-2 6-4 to the top seed. Serbia’s Djokovic, going for a fourth
consecutive title and a seventh overall, will face Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in Sunday’s final. The 35-year-old will also bid for a 21st Grand Slam men’s title, which would put him one behind Rafael Nadal’s alltime record. Spain’s Nadal, 36, was supposed to face Kyrgios in Friday’s second semi-final but withdrew from the match on Thursday because of an abdominal injury. Now Djokovic has the chance to close the gap again on his enduring rival after ending the hopes of Norrie and a nation. Norrie, seeded ninth, was the first British player since Johanna Konta in 2017 to reach a Wimbledon semi-final and was given partisan backing on Centre Court. The atmosphere became celebratory as Norrie broke three times to take the opening set, before coming increasingly stifled as Djokovic eventually found his level.
Rafael Nadal pulls out of semifinal with abdominal injury Rafa Nadal’s hopes of completing a rare calendar year Grand Slam ended on Thursday when the Spaniard pulled out of his highlyanticipated Wimbledon semi-final showdown with Australian Nick Kyrgios with an abdominal strain. “I have to pull out of the tournament as I have been suffering with pain in abdominal,” said the 36-year-old, the holder of a men’s record 22 Grand Slam titles. “I can’t imagine winning two matches with this (pain). For me the most important thing is happiness rather than the title even though everyone knows how much effort I put into this as I can’t risk being out of the sport for two to three months. “I am very sad.” Nadal had triumphed at the Australian and French Opens this year and had been hoping to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to complete the calendar-year slam. Nadal’s withdrawal mean Kyrgios becomes the first Australian to reach the men’s final at the All England Club since Mark Philippoussis in 2003.
KUALA LUMPUR, JUL 8 (AGENCIES): A fighting HS Prannoy edged out Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama to progress to the semifinals at the Malaysia Masters Super 500 tournament here on Friday. Prannoy, a former top 10 player, continued his consistent run and weathered the storm against world number 14 Tsuneyama to emerge victories 25-23 22-20 in the 60-minute quarterfinal clash, which ebbed and flowed throughout, Sportstar reported. One of the heroes of India’s monumental Thomas Cup win in May, Prannoy will face Hong Kong’s NG Ka Long Angus, seeded 8th, in the last four. The men’s singles contest turned out to be a game of cat and mouse as the two highly-skilled players

engaged in a battle of oneupmanship, with Prannoy showing better nerves as he saved game points twice to come up trumps against Tsuneyama. Prannoy, who enjoyed a 2-1 head-to-head count, pounced on the chances early on to erase a slender 1-2 deficit, but the match
was a tight affair as the duo moved from 3-3 to 10-10 following some short but attacking rallies in the opening game. Tsuneyama produced some stiff angled returns and jump smashes to trouble his opponent, while Prannoy constructed his rallies well and kept the shuttle

were 4-4 when Prannoy took a medical timeout to address an issue with his foot. After resumption, he was 9-6 up. However, Tsuneyama started dominating the rallies with his diagonal returns and moved to the break with a two-point cushion. Prannoy pocketed four straight points to move to 13-11. A magnificent jump smash took him to 14-14, before he won a 34-point rally with another precise smash. The Japanese again eked out an 18-16 lead before an off balance Prannoy sent another one out. Tsuneyama soon had two game point opportunities, but Prannoy saved both and earned a match point, with the Japanese going to the net. He threw a fist pump in the air after Tsuneyama went long.
Sporting world pays tribute to Abe Blatter, Platini cleared TOKYO, JUL 8 (PTI): The sporting world on Friday paid glowing tributes to Shinzo Abe, who was instrumental in Japan winning the bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games, with the International Olympics Committee hailing him as “a man of vision” and “a dear friend of the Olympic Movement.” Abe, 67, one of his nation’s most powerful and influential figures, died after being shot during an election campaign speech in western Japan. “Japan has lost a great statesman, and the IOC has lost a valiant supporter and

a dear friend of the Olympic Movement. On behalf of the International Olympic Committee, I would like to extend my most sincere condolences to his family, his friends and the Japanese people,” IOC President Thomas Bach said in a state-
ment on Friday. “Abe Shinzo was a man with a vision, full of determination and boundless energy to make his vision come true. What I appreciated most about him was that he was a man of his word,” Bach said. Bach recalled that without Abe’s support, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics would have been cancelled altogether due to the raging pandemic. “The entire Olympic Movement and I owe him all our respect and gratitude. This is why we will forever hold Abe Shinzo in great honour,” he added.
Women’s Hockey WC: India lose to New Zealand but keep quarters hopes alive
AMSTELVEEN (NETHERLANDS), JUL 8 (IANS): The Indian women’s hockey team put up a gritty performance against New Zealand in their Pool B match, but went down fighting 3-4 at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2022 in a late Thursday night game. However, the Savitaled India team is still in contention for a spot in the quarterfinal as they finished third in their pool. India will face the side which finishes second in Pool C in the crossover match on July 10 for a place in the lasteight. close to the line. Eventually a perfect judgement on the baseline gave the Indian a slender one-point advantage at the break. Prannoy was rewarded for his razor-sharp precision as he eked out a 17-14 lead after his rival had grabbed four points to keep up with the Indian. Tsuneyama scripted another recover y as he grabbed a game-point opportunity after Prannoy went to the net twice. An on-rushing Prannoy saved one with a backhand flick and then unleashed an over-the-head return to move to a gamepoint advantage. Prannoy, then, converted his fourth game point chance with the finest of margin, with the shuttle kissing the line. After the change of sides, the duo
didn’t miss out on the opportunity of slotting the ball into the goal in the 12th minute. The Indians earned the moment in the opening minutes of the second quarter and obtained a penalty corner in the 18th minute. However, Deep Grace Ekka couldn’t find a way to break the 1-1 deadlock. The India team continued to be the aggressors for most part of the second quarter, but the New Zealand defence stood firm and kept their opponents at bay. However, New Zealand made a circle penetration in the 29th minute and Tessa Jopp found the back of the net to help the Kiwis take a 2-1 lead. New Zealand rode on
the momentum and earned back-to-back penalty corners in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Frances Davies converted the second PC in the 32nd minute to help the Kiwis extend their lead further to 3-1. The Indians earned a penalty corner in the 43rd minute. However, they missed out on converting the opportunity. They continued to put pressure on their opponents and obtained a PC in the 47th minute, but the Kiwis kept India at bay yet again. However, Sushila Chanu’s fantastic pass into the circle in the 44th minute to Lalremsiami, who deflected the ball into the goal, kept India in the game.
The Indian team earned a PC in the opening minutes of the final quarter, but Ekka struck the ball wide of the left post. India obtained a flurry of PCs in the 47th minute, but the Kiwis stood firm once again. Sushila effected a brilliant cross from the right flank, but Monika couldn’t direct the ball into the goal. However, Olivia Merry converted a PC in the 54th minute to help New Zealand extend their lead at 4-2. But the Indians continued to put up a strong fight and Gurjit Kaur converted a PC in the 59th minute. India won multiple PCs in the final minute of the match, but the Kiwis ensured they walked off the field as winners.

Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini
ZURICH (SWITZERLAND), JUL 8 (IANS): Former presidents of FIFA and UEFA Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini were cleared of cor r uption charges by a Swiss court on Friday. The two men, Platini, former UEFA president, and Blatter, who led FIFA for 17 years, were cleared of fraud by the Federal Criminal Court in the southern city of Bellinzona. Both the administrators have, once among the most powerful figures in world football, had denied the charges against them. The powerful administrators of world football were acquitted of illegally arranging a two million Swiss francs payment in 2011 when Blatter was the FIFA president and Platini was the vice-president of the global governing body. The case meant Blatter ended his reign as FIFA president in disgrace and it wrecked Platini’s hopes of succeeding him after he
was banned from football when the affair came to light. Blatter had said the payment followed a “gentlemen’s agreement” between the pair when he asked Platini to be his technical advisor in 1998. Platini, who also lost his job as UEFA president following the ban, had said the affair was a deliberate attempt to thwart his attempt to become FIFA president in 2015. Speaking following the verdict, Platini said, “I want to express my happiness for all my loved ones that justice has finally been done after seven years of lies and manipulation.” “My fight is a fight against injustice. I won the first game. In this case, there are culprits who did not appear during this trial. Let them count on me, we will meet again. Because I will not give up and I will go all the way in my quest for truth, Platini was quoted as saying by Skysports.
