Newvariantcouldbe behindfreshspike

A fast spreading XBB.1 descendent - XBB.1.16could be behind the recent surge in Covid cases in India, international and Indian scientists tracking the SARS-CoV2 variants told TOI on Tuesday, reports Times of India.

According to an international platform tracking Covid variants, the highest number of this sublineage’s sequences have come from India (48), followed by Brunei (22), the United States (15) and Singapore (14).

According to reports, this subvariant is showing a big jump in prevalence in at least four countries, includ-

ing India. Experts tracking the Covid variants around the world have found the XBB.1.16 spreading rapidly in some regions.

“In India, XBB.1.16 is showing a high prevalence in the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, as per covSPECTRUM. XBB.1.16 has not descended from XBB.1.5, but both have descended from the recombinant ancestor XBB and more recently XBB.1. XBB is currently dominating in India, and the latest uptick in cases in the country could be a result of XBB.1.16 and perhaps XBB.1.5, but a few more sample runs would clear the picture,” a top expert from India’s genome sequencing network said.

“Most strains isolated from Indian travellers to Singapore, the US and Brunei recently have been XBB.1.16. So, this subvariant could be driving the ongoing spike in cases in India.

was met. This was among the two-point resolution adopted at the federal assembly of the union held on Wednesday.

The union pointed out that the above provisions infringed on the rights of Nagas enshrined under Article 371A of the Constitution of India.

The union also warned that it would be compelled to take recourse to other means to protect the rights if the ULB election was enforced by the State government.

Further, AWUMT said it would not allow any person from within the 18 wards of Mokokchung town to file nominations if the amendments to the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001 were not to the liking of people and imposed the ULB election.

SH: In a memorandum to the chief minister, SH general secretary Dr. Vihuto Asumi reminded that it had on several occasions, voiced out against certain sections of the NMA and urging the government to review and make necessary amend -

ments and deletions.

In this regard, the hoho said that it along with Sumi frontal organizations, held an emergency consultative meeting on March 14 at Zunheboto and deliberated on the issue and adopted several resolutions.

The house noted that Section 120 (1) (a) of the Nagaland Municipal Act vis-à-vis “Taxation on lands and buildings” was an infringement to the protection guaranteed to the Naga people under Article 371-A of the Constitution of India, since Naga people were the absolute owners of their own land.

Therefore, the house resolved that until the state government reviews and completely “deletes” Sec 120 (1) (a) and issues notification, the hoho and the frontal organizations shall “boycott” the ULB election in Zunheboto district in toto. While stating that the SH and frontal organizations had accepted 33% reservation for women, the house, however,

Delayed salaries: Longkhim teachers launch

DIMAPUR, MAR 15 (NPN): Government school teachers under SDEO Longkhim under Tuensang district have launched protest against delay in payment of salaries and also to press for their two-point charter of demands.

In a press release, graduate teacher, Yotingla Sangtam, on behalf of aggrieved teachers, said that the aggrieved teachers took out silent protest march at Longkhim on March 13, 2023 and affirmed to boycott classes until the department fulfilled charter of demands, which include disciplinary actions against “erring officials” of SDEO Longkhim and proper functioning of SDEO office Longkhim.

The aggrieved teachers stated that SDEO Longkhim was established about five years ago and total bifurcation from SDEO Tuensang on March 1, 2022. Since then, the aggrieved

CNCCI through its media affairs, clarified that it did not in any way, endorse or promote tobacco consumption, and demanded that the State government clarify on whether tobacco was a banned substance or legal product sold in the market, as Goods & Service Tax is being collected from the sale of tobacco products.

The trade body also demanded that the state government publicly declare as to whether it is the

Failure to address their charter of demands, the aggrieved teachers said they would be forced to continue with agitation and the concerned office and staffs would be held solely responsible in case of any untoward incident.

authority to regulate such matters or had this been delegated?.

CNCCI also dared the government to tell Naga people as to whose authority and governance should the Naga public follow, as there were multiple and overlapping orders and bans contrary to the State government orders?.

CNCCI warned that in the eventuality of the state government being unable to clarify on these matters, it declared that the business community would have no choice but construe this as a governance failure in Nagaland.

Therefore, in view of

the above, CNCCI urged the Naga armed group to ensure that tobacco products were delisted from the purview of the ban.

Further, Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry reiterated that the business community support early resolution of IndoNaga political issue and requested various Naga Political Groups to direct their energy and resources towards this as the business community has been and would continue to extend goodwill and full support to realise the goal of early Indo-Naga political settlement.

Who controls Elara? Rahul’s new salvo at government

NEW DELHI, MAR15

(IANS): Amid uproar over his UK statement and government seeking apology, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday fired a fresh salvo at Adani Group and the government by raising questions on a foreign entity, named Elara.

Gandhi, after arriving in the national capital from his foreign trip, alleged that Adani group and Elara have been given a contract for missile and radar upgrade.

In a tweet, he said, “India’s missile and radar upgrade contract is given to a company owned by Adani and a dubious foreign entity called Elara. “Who controls Elara? Why is India’s national security being compromised by giving control of strategic defence equipment to unknown foreign entities?”

While Rahul Gandhi is at centre of the controversy, the opposition is united on Adani row. The Trinamool Congress, however, is staying away from the Congressled grouping.

Several Congress leaders spoke out on the matter with Gandhi too sharing a screenshot of the report.

Mallikarjun Kharge has ruled out any apology from Rahul Gandhi in his UK speech. Kharge said that Gandhi did not say anything wrong and only spoke about democracy, “whereas the Prime Minister spoke at many places in foreign lands and insulted the country”.

Amid the uproar over Rahul Gandhi’s statement, the Congress has tried to make it clear that the party is not going to yield on the subject and will be offensive on the issue and press its demand of JPC in Hindenburg-Adani row.

“A leading newspaper of the country has revealed the co-ownership of a dubious Mauritius-based company with a firm of Adani Group. This firm of Adani Group has important contracts in ISRO-DRDO and the defense sector,” Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

“But the prime minister neither wants a discussion on this in Parliament, nor any investigation. Why?” she said. Party general secretary Jairam Ramesh, posed a set of three questions to Adani.

NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (PTI): Delhi Police on Wednesday erected barricades and stopped leaders of several opposition parties marching towards the ED office here from Parliament House demanding a JPC probe into the Adani issue, saying prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC were in place in the area.

The opposition leaders were stopped near Vijay Chowk in Lutyens’ Delhi.

Police made regular announcements using loudspeakers and urged the protesting MPs to vacate the area as CrPC Section 144, which prohibits the assembly of four or more people in an area, was in effect.

When the leaders could not move past the barricade, they called off their march and returned to Parliament House.

A senior police officer said earlier in the day that the police had made adequate security arrangements outside the ED office in view of the protest march.

The leaders wanted to hand over a complaint to the Enforcement Directorate on the Adani-Hindenburg issue.

Before starting their march, the leaders met in the office of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge in Parliament House complex to chalk out a joint strategy on the issue.

The protest march began around 12.30 pm from Parliament House and MPs from several opposition parties took part in it. However, it was soon stopped by police. The opposition

has been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the AdaniHindenburg issue and has been stalling proceedings of Parliament over their demand.

Oppn attack govt over Adani

Several Opposition leaders on Wednesday attacked the government over a media report claiming that a key Adani Group investor is also co-owner with the conglomerate in a defence firm.

A report in The Indian Express claimed that ELARA India Opportunities Fund (Elara IOF), a venture capital fund managed by Elara Capital, is one of the top four entities registered in Mauritius that holds shares predominantly in Adani Group companies.

According to the report, records show that along with the Adani Group, it is a promoter entity in a defence company, Bengaluru-based Alpha Design Technologies Private Limited.

This defence company, incorporated in 2003, works closely with ISRO and DRDO and has a Rs 590 crore contract with the Union Ministry of Defence in 2020 to upgrade and

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra shared screenshots of the report on Twitter. “The ‘Chhupa Rustom’ category award at the Oscars goes to @ DRDO_India and @PIBHomeAffairs. Happy to have unknown foreign funds controlling sensitive defense contracts! Only for their best friend Mr Adani,” she said.

Citing the same media report, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said on Twitter, “This is in India’s Defence space, a key investor in Adani Group, Mauritius based Elara IOF, with 96% of its corpus invested in the group till Dec, ‘22 is also co-owner in a Defence company, the firm works closely with ISRO & DRDO, both jointly hold over 51% stake. NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (PTI): India’s democracy is not in peril but the Congress party has been brought to “political perish” by the people for the kind of behaviour its leader Rahul Gandhi exhibited overseas, Union minister Smriti Irani said on Wednesday as the BJP stepped up the ante against the opposition leader over his recent remarks in the UK.

Gandhi’s grudge with Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken the shape of a grudge with India, she charged, demanding that the Wayanad MP of the Congress apologise to Parliament for his remarks.

During his interactions in the UK recently, Gandhi alleged that the structures of Indian democracy are under attack and there is a “full-scale assault” on the country’s institutions.

His remarks triggered a massive political row, with the BJP accusing him of maligning India on foreign soil and seeking foreign interventions and the Congress hitting back, citing instances of Prime Minister

Addressing a press conference, Irani alleged that “at the feet of India’s colonial past” Gandhi lamented the “lack of foreign intervention” in India’s democracy. This is to bring to a halt India’s resilient growth story under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, she said.

The minister said Gandhi claimed that he does not have access to conversations in Indian universities and that for him was an indication of the death of democracy.

She alleged that the opposition leader visited a University in the national capital in 2016 and supported the slogan of ‘Bharat tere tukde honge’.

Gandhi also said that democracy is being “blown to smithereens” in India, Irani charged. “However, this very gentleman in Jammu and Kashmir, during the ‘Bharat jodo yatra’, said all is well in India,” she said.

“Which was a lie, Mr Gandhi? Your statement in India or your statement in England?” she asked.

Irani alleged Rahul Gandhi during his interactions in the UK not only attacked the magnificence of the country’s Parliament but also the supremacy of the institutions “such as the Supreme Court of India and the Election Commission of India.”

Criticising govt does not amount to being unpatriotic: Kapil Sibal

NEW DELHI, MAR 15

(PTI): Amid a political storm over Rahul Gandhi’s “democracy under attack” remarks made in the UK, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Wednesday said criticising the government whether at home or abroad is a citizen’s right and does not amount to criticising India or being unpatriotic.

Gandhi’s remarks during his recent trip to the United Kingdom have rocked Parliament, with both Houses failing to transact any significant business on the first three days of the budget session’s second half.

In a tweet, former Union minister Sibal said, “House Logjam, Why? Government is not synonymous with India, India is not synonymous with the Government. Criticising the Government whether at home or abroad is a citizen’s right. That does not amount to criticising India or being unpatriotic.”

“Modi ji did it often in the past,” added Sibal, the eminent lawyer who on Saturday had laid down the agenda and a new vision for the country with his newly-launched platform

‘Insaaf’ that is aimed at fighting injustice.

During his interactions in the UK, Gandhi alleged that the structures of Indian democracy are under attack and there is a “full-scale assault” on the country’s institutions.

The former Congress president also told British parliamentarians in London that microphones are often “turned off” in Lok Sabha when an opposition member raises important issues.

Gandhi’s remarks triggered a political slugfest, with the BJP accusing him of maligning India on foreign soil and seeking foreign interventions, and the Congress hitting back at the ruling party by citing instances of Prime Minister Modi raising internal politics abroad.

Technological addiction

Technology was the mantra for catapulting human development and progress especially after the advent of the internet in the early 80s and later access to mobile web from the end of 1996. After that period, the world underwent a huge transformation with regard to information and technology and has been going on at rapid pace. However, as the good also comes with the bad, today’s online era the leap in technology has also brought deep concerns about mobile addiction among children, some as young as two years. Thus, keeping children away from a screen is a huge challenge for parents. Smartphones/tablets are becoming essential tools of learning for children nowadays. While there are many pros to the online world it is highly addictive and might leave an unfavorable impact on the child’s development. Irresponsible use of media can lead to harmful tendencies in children. Today people are spending too much time on the smartphone and for the children, it can have an adverse effect on their physical and mental health. When small children become addicted to a cell phone, they may constantly ask for the phone. If they are not given then they become angry, upset or have a temper tantrum. Children can become dependent on the cell phone and may not know what to do without it. This is to be expected, but as long as you stay firm and do not give in, they will find a new way to cope. From behavioural problems, sleep disturbances, depression, to obesity, nervous system problems and slower social development skills, there could be many side effects of excessive phone usage. According to a survey conducted by the Saurashtra University in January this year, 82% of children were found to be suffering from some psychological conditions like loneliness because of mobile addiction. While 73% of children miss their mobile while they are at school, 77% of children demand mobile phones once they return from the school. The survey has found that at least 93 % of children prefer to play mobile games and they do not like to play outdoor games. The survey has also found that the children’s mothers are responsible for the addiction among their kids. The survey reported that 54% of mothers interviewed, give mobile phones to their children to keep them engaged so that they (mothers) could complete their work without being disturbed. Of all the women contacted, about 30% were working women and 70 % were non-working. According to the survey, 82% of children demand mobile phones from their parents, while 93% children prefer to play mobile games and they do not like to play outdoor games. There are 78% children who are habituated to eating food while watching the mobile screen. There are many dangers associated with children being addicted to a cell phone. A cell phone can affect their learning process, can interfere with their ability to sleep, can prevent them from learning to cope in real life situations, and can lead to obesity. The long term effects of cell phone addition in children are not fully known at this time, as this is the first generation of kids who have access to the full scope of technology that is currently available. The future generation is in danger and it is time to remove this technological addiction and save them.

The Discipline of Dismay

As they followed they were afraid. —Mark 10:32

At the beginning of our life with Jesus Christ, we were sure we knew all there was to know about following Him. It was a delight to forsake everything else and to throw ourselves before Him in a fearless statement of love. But now we are not quite so sure. Jesus is far ahead of us and is beginning to seem different and unfamiliar— “Jesus was going before them; and they were amazed” (Mark 10:32).

There is an aspect of Jesus that chills even a disciple’s heart to its depth and makes his entire spiritual life gasp for air. This unusual Person with His face set “like a flint” (Isaiah 50:7) is walking with great determination ahead of me, and He strikes terror right through me. He no longer seems to be my Counselor and Friend and has a point of view about which I know nothing. All I can do is stand and stare at Him in amazement. At first I was confident that I understood Him, but now I am not so sure. I begin to realize that there is a distance between Jesus and me and I can no longer be intimate with Him. I have no idea where He is going, and the goal has become strangely distant.

Jesus Christ had to understand fully every sin and sorrow that human beings could experience, and that is what makes Him seem unfamiliar. When we see this aspect of Him, we realize we really don’t know Him. We don’t recognize even one characteristic of His life, and we don’t know how to begin to follow Him. He is far ahead of us, a Leader who seems totally unfamiliar, and we have no friendship with Him.

The discipline of dismay is an essential lesson which a disciple must learn. The danger is that we tend to look back on our times of obedience and on our past sacrifices to God in an effort to keep our enthusiasm for Him strong (see Isaiah 50:10-11). But when the darkness of dismay comes, endure until it is over, because out of it will come the ability to follow Jesus truly, which brings inexpressibly wonderful joy.

On 33 percent women reservation

The main objection to holding of ULB elections with 33% reservation for women in Nagaland is because it infringes upon Naga traditional and customary laws under Article 371(A) which is a special provision of the Indian constitution given to the state of Nagaland.

The flip-flop of the state government in its inability to stand firmly to its own resolutions is the reason for the lack of solution to the challenges that the state faces.

The Nagaland Legislative Assembly had, on September 22, 2021, passed a resolution exempting operation of Part IXA of the constitution of India which mandates 33% reservation for women in municipalities and town councils of the state.

When the Public Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), however, filed a civil appeal to the Supreme Court against the state assembly’s resolution and seeking to

hold elections to ULBs in accordance with Section 23A of the Nagaland Municipal (First Amendment) Act, 2006, the state government, instead of standing ground, called for a consultative meeting on 9th March, 2022, with all the representatives of Apex tribal bodies, civil society organisations, and church bodies. Chief Minister, Rio, in a complete contradiction to the Nagaland assembly resolution of September 22, 2021, made an about-turn, and with a straight face, had said that since 33% women reservation in ULBs was part and parcel of 74th Amendment, there was nothing he or the legislators could do about it.

It was abject surrender, and the unseen hand of New Delhi at work through the Supreme Court order that had given the Nagaland government six weeks time to report back on the issue, was not lost on all the keen observers. The then IT

The slew of anti-women measures adopted by the Taliban government in Afghanistan has essentially gone against them, further isolating them globally and making them a pariah.

Reportedly, a handful of Afghan women courageously held a demonstration in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on 8 March, calling on the international community to protect Afghan women.

This was the second International Women’s Day observed under the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan, which swept back to power in August 2021, and more or less marked a year-and-a-half of increasing misery for Afghan women.

In a statement to mark the International Women’s Day, the head of the UN mission in Afghanistan, RozaOtunbayeva said it has been distressing to witness the Taliban’s methodical, deliberate, and systematic efforts to push Afghan women and girls out of the public sphere.

The UN mission said the crackdown was a “colossal act of national self-harm” at a time when Afghanistan faces some of the world’s largest humanitarian and economic crises.

The anti-women Taliban decisions have faced international condemnation, including by some Muslim countries even. The State of Qatar, earlier this week expressed deep concern over the Afghan caretaker government’s decisions which negatively affect Afghan women and girls’ rights, especially suspending their studies in secondary schools and universities

Human Life is an income generating asset. Therefore, it is extremely important to understand the need of a long term investments so that over a period of time you create wealth for a comfortable living.

Recently, I was in Nagaland - I did not see much awareness programme on Retail Investments. Unfortunately, Nagaland is yet to develop a culture of investingbut I’m positive that momentum will take place very soon. Let me share one data point. Nagaland is currently hovering around only 0.03% of total AUM (Asset Under Management ) of Indian Mutual Fund industry. Very low - certainly it can go up considerably. For small investors there are two main asset classes - “Debt” and “Equity”. Debt investment may give you single digit return per annum but Equity investment can generate double digit return per annum subject to you staying with your investment. In equity there is a risk but the risk becomes less and less over a period of time. That’s the beauty of equity investment.

& C Advisor, Mmhonlumo Kikon, who co-chaired the meeting, went to the extent of terming the consultative meeting as ‘historic’ since everybody supported 33% reservation for women in ULBs by raising their hands on the resolution, not once, but twice. Former Planning Minister, Neiba Kronu, who chaired the consultative meet, termed the meeting as one of the highest intellectual gathering the state had ever witnessed where all the representatives shared their opinions. Before the consultative meeting happened, in response to the plea filed by the PUCL and others to the Supreme Court seeking to hold ULB elections in accordance with Section 23A of Nagaland Municipal (First Amendment) Act, 2006, the state government had presented a counter proposal to implement reservation by nomination where men would nominate women for the

reserved seats. The court, however, did not even allow the counter proposal of reservation by nomination to be heard by the bench citing that local issues can’t be gender negative. The Supreme Court made it clear to the state that women reservation under the 74th Amendment was not an option but an obligation.

What troubles and is disturbing to the Naga mind is the generalization of the Supreme Court ruling even while addressing a Naga-specific issue in regards to women reservation. It becomes Nagaspecific because Article 371A cannot be excluded from the issue.

The condition and treatment of women in mainland India is very different to that of in Naga society. The position of women in the Naga society is way much better as compared to women in mainland India. In the Naga society, women are equal partners and bread

and banning their work in nongovernmental organisations.

The Qatari condemnation was conveyed in a statement delivered by the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva, HE Dr. Hind Abdul Rahman Al Muftah during an interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, within the framework of the 52nd regular session of the Human Rights Council.

The deputy foreign minister of Turkiye, Mehmet Kemal Bozay, has said that the international community must not allow the situation in Afghanistan to deteriorate “even further.”

The Secretary General of the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hissein Brahim Taha, spoke in Geneva and, reiterated the OIC’s condemnation of Kabul’s edicts banning women from education and work, saying: “It is against our religion.”

Anti-women diktats

The biggest crackdown on teenage girls and university students came just days before Women’s Day, when earlier this week the authorities banned them from secondary schools and higher educational institutions. No country has officially recognised the Taliban government as Afghanistan’s legitimate ruler, with the right to education for women a sticking point in negotiations over aid and recognition.

According to UNESCO, currently, 80 percent of schoolaged Afghan girls and young women - totalling 2.5 million people - are out of school. The

Taliban’s decision to keep girls’ schools shuttered has reversed significant gains in female education during the past 20 years.

In another anti-women diktat, Taliban government has annulled divorce in Afghanistan, forcing divorced women to go back to abusive husbands. Lawyers say that several women have reported being dragged back into abusive marriages after Taliban commanders annulled their divorces.

Latest international efforts

UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said last Friday that a delegation headed by UN Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed to Afghanistan recently, found that some Taliban officials were more open to restoring women’s rights, but others were clearly opposed.

Mohammed, a former Nigerian Cabinet minister is the UN’s highest-ranking woman, she was joined on the trip by Sima Bahous, executive director of UN Women, which promotes gender equality and women’s rights, and Assistant Secretary General for political affairs Khaled Khiari.

The UN team met with the Taliban administration in the capital Kabul and talks focused on the restrictive measures the Taliban government has imposed on women and girls since they re-took power.

The UN has stressed that Afghan women are crucial to delivering humanitarian help to civilians, the majority of them women and children.

The Taliban government adheres to an austere interpretation of Islam and has imposed severe restrictions on women’s

Wealth Time

Regular investment can do wonders over a long period of time.

Fundamental theory of investment is to address the distant need first. Let me explain - Let’s say Mr “X” today is 35 year old and he needs to create a corpus for his retirement when he is 65 year old. So he has 30 years time in hand.

That’s a good enough time to create a handsome corpus for his retirement - subject to him investing regularly (preferably monthly) in a diversified equity mutual fund. In investment you need money but what is more important is the duration of time. Longer you stay invested in Equity better the return.

Another important aspect is the compounding factor which plays a very crucial role in long term investment. Since March 1999, the Nifty 50 total return index has given an annualised returns of approximately 13% CAGR (Compounded Annual Growth Rate ) which means if someone invested Rs 2000 per month from March 1999 till date- his corpus would have been around Rs.40 Lakhs. This return is for a period

earners. In more sense than one, Naga women enjoy more higher social status and privileges than most other women elsewhere. Thus the need for the 74th Amendment of the Indian constitution becomes necessary for women in mainland India and which is not so in the context of Naga women. The 74th Amendment is an obligation of the constitution of India to the women of mainland India who all can only be empowered, in the true sense of the word, through reservations and quotas. The obligation of the state in respect of the 74th Amendment is to ensure that Nagalandspecific Article 371A is not infringed.

Sadly, over the last two years, the state government had repeatedly reassured the supreme court of its readiness to hold the ULB elections with 33% women reservation. It is because of the pressure exerted by the Joint Coor-

lives that the United Nations called “gender-based apartheid”.

Notably, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and the Human Rights Commission in Afghanistan have been erased under the Taliban regime.

According to the UN Mission in the country, nine out of 10 women in Afghanistan experience physical, sexual or psychological violence from their partner. Divorce, however, is far greater a taboo than the abuse itself and women who part with their husbands sustain many atrocities at the hands of society.

The United Nations’ special representative for women in Afghanistan, Alison Davidian said the implications of the government’s policies “impact all Afghans and will resonate throughout generations”. Meanwhile, a prominent group of Afghan and Iranian women are backing a campaign calling for gender apartheid to be recognised as a crime under international law.

The campaign, launched on International Women’s Day, reflects a belief that the current laws covering discrimination against women do not capture the systematic nature of the policies imposed in Afghanistan and Iran to downgrade the status of women in society.

The authors of the open letter, including international lawyers, argue that the legal definition of apartheid as a crime against humanity, adopted by the UN in 1973 and supported by the 1998 Rome Statute, does not fit the case of Afghanistan and Iran, even if the descriptive term does.

of roughly 24 years. If one extrapolates this for a period of 30 years, the amount becomes almost double- say Rs 80 Lakhs approximately . For a retired person this amount would be of immense help.

Simple, yet so powerful! One more suggestion -when you invest in Equity Mutual fund do opt for “Growth option” and not the “Dividend option”. This way the growth of your investment will be faster due to the compounding factor over the years as we have seen from the above illustration.

Renowned scientist Sir Albert Einstein once rightly said - “The compounding interest is the eighth wonder of the world” because the strongest force in the universe is the compounding factor. He who understands earns it…he who does not…pays it.“ Happy Investing !

dination Committee (JCC) and other associations to the state government to hold ULB polls only after amendment of Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001, that had kept the ULB elections at bay. Immediately after retaining power, the NDPP-BJP government has announced the date of the ULB elections with 33% reservation for women even before the dust of the just concluded assembly election has settled. Having just witnessed the Naga election, and with all the other parties willing to support the new NDPP-BJP government in Nagaland, the Central BJP knows that the time is ripe to implement the 74th Amendment of the constitution in Nagaland, thereby removing the road block of Article 371A, and paving the road clear for the ultimate Amendment of the Indian constitution for a India with a Uniform Civil Code.

Taliban Mindset

Initially, when the Taliban 2.0 took over power in Afghanistan in August 2021, there was some euphoria that now they might be a changed Taliban, looking forward to mend their earlier ways and chart a new course of development for their country.

However, starting with their first diktat in September 2021, urging for segregated classrooms for boys and girls at schools, the caretaker Taliban government has followed it up with a slew of anti-women measures. What perplexes one is that though the Taliban describe most of these decisions as Islamic, in fact they are completely unIslamic. Islam gives equal rights to men and women in all spheres of life, including, education, inheritance, right to work, say in marriage. Yet, in action Taliban goes completely against the spirit and teachings of Islam.

Instead, if they had adopted a new pragmatic and forward looking approach towards reorganising the Afghan society, it would have gone in their favour and would have helped them to consolidate their power in the country. As currently there seems to be no political force in the country, which could counter the Taliban. In addition, it would have provided them legitimacy and support from the so-called Islamic countries, if only they would have chosen to uphold the Islamic teachings, which in reality, they have failed to do.

Troubled at opposition less government

Sir, I, a mere and average Naga public am troubled at the thought of going to have an opposition-less government in Nagaland. This small write up of mine may touch every sensible Naga so that hard hitting pressure pour in the right channel at this critical time to enable the Honorable C.M of Nagaland to think of the importance of going by the views of the electorate of 37 hon’ble MLAs. The topics of harnessing all 60 MLA for the sake of Naga Peace Talk and to have Assembly sessions without hindrances would be an abominable liar. The ostensible reason is no longer believable and the act of preposterous should invite public outcry. On the other hand, the public expect BJP hon’ble MLAs to speak truth and stand firm not only for the present ministry but for the sake of democracy. If the BJP Govt. at the centre don’t mince a word in this troubled time, the public can take the party for a ride that the giant BJP is not for the public, then the party growth in the state need to be compensated in future.

Lastly, I suggest that all the 37 NDPP-BJP Hon’ble MLAs go back to their respective constituencies and consult their men who mandated them to power 14 days ago.

CUET to be conducted in 3 shifts: UGC chief

MERGER WITH JEE, NEET TO BE ANNOUNCED 2 YEARS IN ADVANCE

NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (PTI): The Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG will be conducted in three shifts in a day this year instead of two and plans for its merger with crucial entrance exams like JEE and NEET will be announced at least two years in advance, according to UGC chairman M Jagadesh Kumar.

In an interview to PTI, Kumar said the UGC and National Testing Agency (NTA) are prepared to ensure that the second edition of CUET-UG is glitch free.

Acknowledging the glitches that students experienced last year, he said all issues that the students went through would be taken care of this year. He said the centres would be identified well in advance so that the second edition is glitch free.

“I agree there were several glitches during the exam last time but this year all issues have been ironed out. Keeping in mind the experience of the students, a plan has been chalked out and we are ready to ensure that the candidates just have to worry about the exam and not any glitches,” he said.

The second edition

of the exam, a common gateway for undergraduate admissions in central universities across the country, is scheduled from May 21 to 31. Kumar said that extra computers and extra centres have been arranged as plan B so that in case there are any glitches, the candidates can be shifted there and the exam for a particular shift will not be cancelled.

The UGC chief also announced that in a deviation from the usual pattern, the exam will be conducted in three shifts from this year.

Asked about the proposal to merge CUET with engineering entrance exam JEE and medical entrance exam NEET, he said, “It is definitely doable. The details are being worked out but whenever the merger happens, announcement will be made at least two years in advance so the students can prepare accordingly.”

The UGC had in March last year announced that undergraduate admissions will be conducted in all central universities through a common entrance test and not on the basis of class 12 marks. The debut edition of the CUET-UG was conducted in July last year

Lalu, family at Delhi court in land-for-job scam

and was marred by glitches, prompting the NTA to cancel the exam at multiple centres. While several students were informed about cancellation a night before the exam, many of them were turned away from centres.

The UGC chairman had then said the exam at certain centres have been cancelled following reports of “sabotage”.

With 14.9 lakh registrations, the CUET, the common gateway for undergraduate admissions in all central universities, became the second biggest entrance exam in the country, surpassing JEE-Main’s average registration of nine lakh.

“We have already received over 11.5 lakh registrations this year. The deadline has been extended till March 30 and we are expecting the applications to cross last year’s number,” Kumar said.

Asked about “normalisation” of scores which left several aspirants disappointed as they found their marks reduced from their original scores, making it difficult for them to get their dream college, he said efforts have been made to minimise any errors during the process.

Maha Gov’s role under scrutiny of SC

NEW DELHI, MARCH 15(AGENCIES): A Governor must exercise power cautiously and be aware that calling for a trust vote could bring down the government, the Supreme Court said today in sharp remarks while hearing a case on the Shiv Sena coup. Calling for a trust vote just on grounds of differences within a ruling party can topple an elected government, said the court.

NEW DELHI, MARCH

15 (IANS): RJD national president Lalu Prasad along with his wife Rabri Devi and daughter arrived at Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court to appear in a case related to the alleged land-for-job scam. The court had on February 27 issued summons to them in the case which concerns alleged appointments made in the Railways in exchange for land parcels given or sold to Lalu Prasad’s family while he served as the Union Railway Minister from 2004 to 2009.

In its charge sheet, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said that irregular appointments had been made in the Railways, in violation of the standards and guidelines established by the Indian Railways for hiring. It is alleged that the candidates gave Lalu

Maha woman who chopped mother arrested

MUMBAI, MARCH 15

(IANS): In a grisly act, a 24-year-old woman allegedly killed her widowed mother, chopped up her body, and kept the parts in plastic bags that were hidden in the cupboard for nearly three months, a police official said on Wednesday.

The spine-chilling incident came to light late on Tuesday when the Kalachowki police were investigating the complaint that the widow, identified as Veena Prakash Jain, 55, was missing.

The police swung into action and arrested the victim’s daughter Rimple P. Jain in connection with the murder of her mother, though the exact motives behind the ghastly crime are not yet clear.

The deceased woman’s elder brother, Sureshkumar Phulchand Porwal, 60, had filed the complaint late on Tuesday night after Rimple refused to let his son (her cousin) meet her mother. After Porwal’s complaint when the police team reached the Jains’ first floor home in Ibrahim Kasam Chawl, Peru Compound in the Lalbaug area, Rimple

SAZOLIE

initially did not permit them to enter.

However, the police team sensed a stench emanating from the home and after some tough words, they finally gained entry to the home and launched a search.

The police team encountered a sight straight out of a horror film - they found big and small pieces

of Veena’s body, wrapped in plastic bags and stored in the cupboard and other places.

The murder is believed to have been committed sometime after the noon of November 26, 2022, and her body, in bits and pieces, was recovered around midnight last night.

“The body pieces were in an advanced state of decomposition, there was a deathly stench in the entire home, maggots and insects crawling around the place... We immediately summoned the forensic team to investigate the full home and sent the victim’s body to KEM Hospital for an autopsy,” said an official, who is part of the probe team.

Prasad’s family members land at extremely reduced prices -- up to one-fifth of the going market rates -directly or through their close relatives and family members.

The CBI had filed the charge sheet in the case on October 10, 2022, against 16 persons including Lalu Prasad’s wife Rabri Devi and daughter and sanction was then obtained to prosecute them.

Special Judge Geetanjali Goel of Rouse Avenue Courts had on February 27 observed that, prima facie, the on-record report shows that offences have been committed under different sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Taking cognisance of the said offences, the judge then summoned the accused persons.

Hearing the Sena versus Sena case, the Supreme Court made strong observations on Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s role in the Maharashtra vote that unseated the Uddhav Thackeray-led government last year.

“The Governor must be conscious that calling for a trust vote may lead to the toppling of the government,” said a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud.

“The Governor should not enter any area which precipitates the fall of a government. People will start ditching the ruling party and the Governor will end up toppling the ruling party. This will be a sad spectacle for democracy,” said the judges, adding that governors must exercise their powers with the greatest circumspection.

The three-year-old Uddhav Thackeray-led SenaNCP-Congress coalition in Maharashtra lost power

after a coup in the Shiv Sena by Eknath Shinde, who went on to form a new government with the BJP in June.

Mr Koshyari had asked for a test of majority, but Mr Thackeray resigned, facing defeat, making way for Mr Shinde to take power.

The factions led by Mr Thackeray and Eknath Shinde have since been fighting for recognition as the “real Shiv Sena”.

Last month, the Election Commission handed over the Shiv Sena name and poll symbol to the Eknath Shinde faction.

Mr Thackeray, despite losing control of the party founded by his father Bal Thackeray, continues to fight the Shinde faction in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is hearing petitions that question the foundation of the Shinde government, arguing that Mr Shinde and 15 other rebels were disqualified at the time of the trust vote.

Chief Justice Chandrachud commented during the hearing: “They broke bread for three years. They broke bread with (Congress) and NCP for three years. What happened overnight after three years of happy marriage?”

The Governor, he said, has to ask himself this question - “What were you fellas

doing for three years? If it was one month after the election takes place and they suddenly bypassed the BJP and joined INC, that’s different. Three years you cohabit and suddenly one fine day group of 34 say there is discontent. Enjoying the spoils of office and suddenly one day you just...”

What was the basis for a floor test, the bench asked repeatedly.

“Governor’s trust vote is where the majority in the house is shaken. Where was there anything to indicate that?” Justice Chandrachud questioned.

“Difference of opinion among MLAs within a party can be on any ground like payment of development fund or deviation from party ethos but can that be a sufficient ground for the governor to call for the floor test? Governor cannot lend his office to effectuate a particular result.”

When the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that the rebels had lost confidence in Uddhav Thackeray, Justice Chandrachud said: “Discontent in the party by itself will not justify governor calling a trust vote.”

The Chief Justice said the Governor cannot be oblivious of the fact that in a three-party coalition, dissent took place only in one.

India’s exports dip 8.8% to $33.88 billion

The country’s exports had contracted by 6.58 per cent to USD 32.91 billion in December 2022. In February 2022, the trade deficit was USD 18.75 billion. Last time, it was in January 2022 when the trade deficit touched USD 17.42 billion.

DELHI,

MAR 15

(PTI): Contracting for the third month in a row, India’s exports declined by 8.8 per cent to USD 33.88 billion in February due to slowdown in global demand, even as the trade deficit touched about a year low of USD 17.43 billion during the month, according to official data released on Wednesday. Imports also declined by 8.21 per cent to USD 51.31 billion as against USD

55.9 billion recorded in the corresponding month last year. Cumulatively, however during April-February this fiscal, the country’s overall merchandise exports rose by 7.5 per cent to USD 405.94 billion. NPCC suggests party-less...

(From p-1)

NPCC said the meeting noted that Congress candidates fought for reasons they believed in and this was acknowledged and for those present expressed gratitude to all party workers, supporters and well-wishers who stood firm despite all adverse conditions. NPCC said it also expressed sincere regrets for shortcomings for those workers who had failed in their duties and even played negative roles.

NPCC said its candidates decided to remain united for promoting and strengthening the party and expressed the need to team together with positive thinkers. After being humbled by its defeat in the Assembly election, the meeting observed that Congress has lost moral authority to raise voice on issues of public interest. Furthermore, NPCC said it has also been silenced by the rejection of its election manifesto by the majority. In such a scenario, the meeting considered the opposition-less government as undemocratic as such an arrangement gave absolute power to corrupt with no questions where looters would openly demand commissions on all development projects, indulge in backdoor appointments and misuse public offices.

In this, NPCC said the party candidates recommended that the party should continue to act as a constructive opposition even though outside the Assembly. The meeting also appealed to elite section of the society and clergies to be more serious as it was time the elites understood the madness of the multitude over money and power that was endangering the existence of Nagaland.

Commerce secretary Sunil Barthwal said that going by the trend, India’s goods and services exports will cross USD 750 billion in 2022-23.

“We have kept the momentum despite the global headwinds. Exporters have kept the momentum. Services exports are doing extremely well. Trade deficit has really come down. Hopefully we will be doing better,” Barthwal told reporters here. He added that the ministry has started exercise to fix the target for the next fiscal also.

The meeting was attended by Sümi Hoho president I Nikheto Jimomi, general secretary Dr. Vihuto Asumi, Sümi Kükami Hoho president KashitoYepthomi, general secretary Hetoho S. Zhimomi, ZAPO president Kakugha S. Rotokha, ZCCI president Kikheto Muru and ZTGBA chairman H. Shihoto Zhimomi.

It is also possible that XBB.1.16 may have originated in India,” the expert said, adding that XBB.1.16 could eventually dominate all other SARS-CoV-2 circulating variants. According to covSPECTRUM, a platform that accesses GISAID data and helps scientists identify variants of SARS-CoV-2, India currently has 48 sequenced samples of this sublineage. According to it, as many as 39 sequenced samples of the sublineage are from Maharashtra, eight are from Gujarat and one from UP. Dr Vipin M Vashishtha, the member of WHO’s Vaccine Safety Net who has been tracking new Covid variants during the pandemic, told TOI, “The previous XBB.1 descendant, XBB.1.5, had become dominant across the globe but not in India. But there is some worry about XBB.1.16 globally because it has certain mutations in the non-spike region of the virus: two ORF9b mutations. ORF9b has been implicated in efficient immune evasion.”

Infectious diseases expert Dr Sanjay Pujari, a member of India’s national Covid-19 task force, said, “Not much information is yet available on XBB.1.16’s relative immune escape properties and ability to cause severe illness as compared to other Omicron sub-lineages.”

Contractors involved in construction works were informed to gear up and extend their fullest support and dedication so that targets were achieved on time.

two sections of Nagaland Municipal Act (NMA), 2001 were amended. Stating this, KVC chairman Helievi-o Solo also declared support to three bodies –AKMWP, DUCCF and AWUMT–who had earlier expressed opposition to ULB elections till two sections of the NMA were amended in the interest of Nagas.

He urged the government to immediately amend the two sections, viz, i) tax on land and building as it directly infringed Article 371A and publish the amendment notification in the Government Gazette and ii) 33% reservation of seats for women in ULBs, which was not a social practice in Naga society and infringed Article 371A.

The KVC chairman warned that in case the government failed to listen and address the genuine demand of the people and proceed with the election process, regardless of

Gold declines Rs 310; silver falls Rs 90

NEW DELHI, MAR 15

(PTI): Gold prices declined by Rs 310 to Rs 57,070 per 10 grams in the national capital on Wednesday amid weak global trends, according to HDFC Securities.

The yellow metal had closed at Rs 57,380 per 10 grams in the previous trade.

Silver also fell by Rs 90 to Rs 66,535 per kg.

“Spot gold in the Delhi markets traded at Rs 57,070 per 10 grams, down Rs 310 per 10 grams,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior AnalystCommodities at HDFC Securities, said. In the overseas markets, gold was quoting lower at USD 1,891 per ounce and silver was flat at USD 21.61 per ounce. US dollar and bond yields traded higher post-US inflation data as increased expectations of a 25 basis points hike by the US Federal Reserve at the next meeting, Gandhi said.

endangering or infringing Article 371A, then people of the land would resort to anything for protection and retention of their birth right.

He also appealed to all intending candidates not to file nominations till the matter was settled.

While declaring support for early ULB election, Solo however suggested that it would be wise for all stakeholders to look back and revisit ULB election history of the past, and subsequent events and aftermath of the same.

He recalled that the first ULB election in Nagaland was held smoothly and peacefully in 2004 without any women reservation in three municipal councils of Kohima, Dimapur and Mokokchung and 20 town councils.

The tenures subsequently expired between December 19, 2009 and July 9, 2010. After this, ULB election could not

be held due to conflict between the State Government and various civil society organisations over the government’s persuasive attitude to hold the ULB election with 33% women reservation which prolonged the matter.

Thereafter, the government had forcefully tried to conduct the ULB polls in 2016-2017 with 33% women reservation but this only ignited the fury of general mass and resulted in protests by various tribal bodies, spearheaded by the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC).

KVC said this also resulted in arson and damage to government buildings and properties besides two deaths and injury to several others. The government was compelled to withhold the ULB election by a Cabinet notification.

By observing the sequences of the past history, Solo hoped that every stakeholder had learnt their lessons.

“We have witnessed that forceful initiation by the government with suppressive intentions in this matter will never succeed. Let us learn from those past ugly events we have come across and refrain from repeating the same mistake again,” he appealed. The KVC chairman also conveyed warm greetings to all the newly-elected members of 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) and welcomed the new council of ministers and advisers of the newlyformed government under the leadership of chief minister Neiphiu Rio, described as a seasoned politician and a patriotic leader of the people who was elected as chief minister for fifth time.

Solo also expressed support to the chief minister and his government, hoping that there would be all-round development without any bias or partiality to any section of Nagas or area in the State.

Floods kill 14 in Turkish earthquakebattered provinces

ANKARA, MAR 15

(AP): Floods caused by torrential rains hit two Turkish provinces that were devastated by last month’s catastrophic earthquake, killing at least 14 people and increasing the misery for thousands who were left homeless, officials said Wednesday. Rescue teams were still searching for five people reported missing in three locations, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said. Soylu said 12 people were killed by the floods in the southeastern Sanliurfa province while two others died in neighbouring Adiyaman province. In Adiyaman, victims drowned after surging waters swept away a container home sheltering a family of earthquake survivors, HaberTurk television reported. The victims in Sanliurfa included five Syrian nationals whose bodies were found inside a flooded basement apartment and two other people who died inside a van that was trapped at an underpass.

2 killed, 4 missing after landslides strike town near Jakarta

JAKARTA, MAR 15

(IANS): Two people were killed and four others went missing after landslides hit Bogor town near the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, a disaster management official said on Wednesday. Eleven people survived the incident striking the town at 11.49 p.m. on Tuesday, several of them suffered serious wounds, the official told Xinhua news agency. “Heavy downpours triggered the landslides, six houses and one mosque were destroyed,” he said. The incident also disturbed train transportation from Bogor to the Sukabumi district of West Java province, according to him.

No group has claimed the attack yet.

Criminal ring attacks

14 cities in Brazil

BRASILIA, MAR 15

(IANS): At least 14 cities in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Norte state suffered shooting or arson attacks that left one person dead, local authorities said. An organised crime ring known as the Crime Syndicate, which operates widely in the state, were allegedly behind the attacks, according to police reports. The victim died in a clash with security forces, the police said, adding that the attacks occurred in the state capital Natal, and more than 10 other cities in the state, reports Xinhua news agency. The state’s security forces jointly responded to the attacks on a court of law, two military police stations, a city hall and a bank. Police also reported damage to a motorcycle shop, and vehicles parked on the street and in public lots.

US drone may not be recovered from Black Sea after Russian intercept: WH

WASHINGTON, MAR 15 (AGENCIES): The U.S. military surveillance drone that crashed into the Black Sea after being intercepted by Russian fighter jets may never be recovered, White House spokesman John Kirby said on Wednesday. In the first such incident since the Ukraine war began, Russian Su-27 jets struck the propeller of the unmanned drone, making it inoperable, the Pentagon said, worsening already tense relations between Washington and Moscow. Russia’s defense ministry blamed “sharp maneuvering” of the drone for the crash and said that its jets did not make contact. “It has not been recovered. And I’m not sure that we’re going to be able to recover it,” Kirby said in an interview with CNN. “Where it fell into the Black Sea - very, very deep water. So we’re still assessing whether there can be any kind of recovery effort. There may not be.” If the Russians recover

with intelligence and weapons. The State Department on Tuesday summoned Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, to express U.S. concerns over the encounter.

(IANS): US Senators Bill Hagerty and Jeff Merkley have introduced a bipartisan Senate resolution reaffirming the US’ recognition of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh as an “integral part of the Republic of India”.

The resolution comes following a major clash between India and China in the Eastern Sector along the Line of Actual Control in six years.

know whether we will be able to retrieve it or not, but that it has to be done. And we’ll certainly work on it. I hope, of course, successfully,” Kremlin Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev told the Rossiya-1 TV channel.

The incident over international waters on Tuesday was a reminder of the risk of direct confrontation between the United States and Russia over Ukraine, which Moscow invaded more than a year ago and which Western allies have supported

General Mark Milley and Lloyd Austin attend a virtual meeting of Ukraine Defense Contact Group. Russia said on Wednesday it would try to retrieve the remains the surveillance drone. It denied being responsible for the crash and said relations with the United States had reached their “lowest point”. “I don’t

In a tweet, the party said that more workers were reaching Zaman Park and vowed not to let the “impure intentions” of the coalition government succeed.

LAHORE, MAR 15

(IANS): After law enforcement agencies pulled back from former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khans residence in Lahore on Wednesday, PTI supporters outside Zaman Park cheered and celebrated “chasing Rangers away”.

Earlier in the morning, the police and Rangers continued efforts - which began on Tuesday -- to arrest the PTI chief in connection with the Toshkhana case, reports Dawn.

KATHMANDU, MAR 15

(PTI): Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” will hold a vote of confidence in Parliament on March 20 after the culmination of the vicepresidential election on Friday, officials said on Wednesday.

The second round of vote of confidence comes after Nepal’s second largest party in Parliament -- CPNUML -- in February decided to withdraw its support to the “Prachanda”-led government in the wake of a renewed political equation in the run-up to the presidential election, dealing a jolt to the two-month-old ruling coalition.

The major reason for the breakup of the alliance between Prachanda and former PM K P Sharma Oli

was because the Maoist leader decided to support senior Nepali Congress candidate Ram Chandra Paudel for the President’s post. The vote of confidence will be held on March 20 after the culmination of the vicepresidential election on Friday, officials said.

Separately, a video posted on PTI’s official Twitter showed Khan, donning a gas mask, addressing party supporters outside his residence.

“The message that we delivered to the Russian ambassador is that they need to be more careful in flying in international airspace near U.S. assets that are, again, flying in completely legal ways, conducting missions in support of our national security interests,” Kirby told CNN. “They’re the ones that need to be more careful. “The message was: Don’t do this again,” Kirby added later on ABC. Antonov after the meeting said the drone “deliberately and provocatively was moving toward Russian territory with transponders turned off.” He said his meeting at the State Deptt was constructive and the issue of possible consequences for Moscow over the incident was not raised, RIA state news agency reported.

“At a time when China continues to pose grave and gathering threats to the Free and Open Indo-Pacific, it’s critical for the US to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our strategic partners in the region -- especially India,” said Senator Hagerty in a statement.

“This bipartisan resolution expresses the Senate’s support for unequivocally recognizing the state of Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India, condemning China’s military aggression to change the status quo along the Line of Actual Control, and further

enhancing the US-India strategic partnership and the Quad in support of the Free and Open Indo-Pacific.

“America’s values supporting freedom and a rulesbased order must be at the center of all of our actions and relationships around the world -- especially as the Chinese government pushes an alternative vision,” said Senator Merkley.

“This resolution makes clear that the US views the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh as part of India -not China -- and commits the US to deepening support and assistance to the region, alongside like-minded inter-

national partners and donors.”

The resolution reaffirms that the US recognizes the McMahon Line as the international boundary between China and the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, and pushes back against China’s claims that Arunachal Pradesh is its territory, which is a part of China’s increasingly aggressive and expansionist policies, the statement said. Furthermore, the resolution commends the Indian government for taking steps to defend itself against aggression and security threats from China.

Austrian police warn of threat to Vienna churches

VIENNA, MAR 15 (AP): Austrian police warned Wednesday of a possible “Islamist-motivated attack” in Vienna against churches, citing undisclosed information the country’s intelligence service had received.

Police in Vienna tweeted that they had heightened security in front of certain buildings, including churches, and increased the presence of officers in the Austrian capital.

“There is a nonspecific threat of an assault against churches,” Vienna police tweeted.

“As precautionary measure ... points of interest have been put under in -

creased guard by regular and special operation police forces.”

“If there is a concrete danger for the population at a concrete location, Vienna police will warn immediately via all available channels,” police added. Police said they could not say how long their security measures would be in place for. “Police officers are equipped with bulletproof helmets and vests and as -

sault rifles. They will carry out surveillance activities and also carry out checks in road traffic,” police spokesman Markus Dittrich told local radio station Radio Wien. He did not give any further details on the background of the threat but said that more police would be seen patrolling in the vicinity of churches.

A spokesman for the archdiocese of Vienna told The Associated Press that

Catholic churches did not appear to be the main target.

“We do not appear to be primarily affected,” Michael Prueller said.

“While we were informed by police about the general threat, we were also told that there is no imminent danger for Catholics. So we decided to keep out churches open to the public and celebrate all church services as planned for the time being.”

Super Winners of ‘NEXA Music’

Stage musical show ‘Disco Dancer - The Musical’, which aims to bring back the grandeur of 1980’s, unforgettable songs, disco style dancing and unforgettable dialogues for audiences of all generations, is set to premiere in India.

After sold-out shows at West End, London, ‘Disco Dancer - The Musical’ will land in Mumbai on April 14 at the NSCI dome.

Actor Suniel Shetty who has come together with Saregama to bring this venture to India, said: “Who can forget the impact ‘Disco Dancer’ had on the ‘80s generation? What excites me is how

wonderfully this production celebrates the spirit of ‘80s cinema which connected with the audiences in a magical way. I truly believe that this musical will appeal not just to the generation that grew up in the Disco era but also those who are only now discovering the music, fashion, and entertainment trends of the 80s. It is also a reminder to us as an industry to not lose sight of what sets our films apart and makes them so unique.”

The musical show adapts Mithun Chakraborty’s iconic 1982 blockbuster, ‘Disco Dancer’ and brings back Bappi Lahiri’s cult classics in a

A. R. Rahman has announced the four Super Winners of Season 2 of ‘NEXA Music’. The second season of the music platform, which has been curated to promote aspiring Indian musicians to showcase their talent and create original international Standard English music, concluded with Gaia Meera, Hanu Dixit, Sunep A Jamir, and Inga emerging as the winners.

Gaia Meera is a Mumbai-based artiste who has captured people’s attention with her soulful voice and

meaningful lyrics. Hanu Dixit also from Mumbai is a multi-talented artist who sings, writes, and composes music that is both catchy and profound. Sunep A Jamir, from Nagaland, uses his unique voice and vibrant personality to create music that is both fun and impactful. Inga from Bangalore combines eastern and western musical influences in her work, creating a familiar and refreshing sound.

Talking about choosing the best artistes, Rahman said, “India is buzzing with youth, energy, and undiscovered raw talent.

We always strive to offer something distinctive and unique for the generations with each season. Since each of the individuals were so strong and talented, it was difficult to narrow the field down to the Top 4, but it was undoubtedly an amazing experience to have such amazing talents”.

The artists were evaluated based on a number of factors, including creativity, songwriting, and performance. ‘NEXA Music’ will release a special album featuring these super-talented artistes in the coming weeks. (IANS)

Drinking coffee may help you in weight loss, ward off diabetes risk

Drinking coffee, a rich source of caffeine, may help curb the amount of body fat and reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, suggests a study.

Researchers from the Imperial College London found that people who carry genetic variants associated with slower caffeine metabolism drink, on average, less coffee, yet have higher levels of caffeine in their blood than people who metabolise it quickly to reach or retain the levels required for its stimulant effects.

The research published in the journal BMJ Medicine concluded that the speed at which coffee is metabolised by the body may impact the weight.

To find out, the study looked at the role of two

common genetic variants of the CYP1A2 and AHR genes in nearly 10,000 people of predominantly European ancestry. The CYP1A2 and AHR genes are associated with the speed of caffeine metabolism in the body.

The results of the analysis showed that people with higher plasma caffeine levels enjoyed a lower body mass index (BMI) and body fat, alongside a lower risk of developing type two diabetes.

“Ninety-five per cent

of your caffeine is metabolised by an enzyme,” Dipender Gill, clinical scientist at the Imperial, was quoted as saying Independent.co.uk.

“Two genes - CYP1A2 and AHR - affect the function and level of that enzyme.

Using these genetic variants, the team found that slower metabolisers have higher plasma (blood) caffeine levels, and those with higher plasma levels go on to have a lower BMI and risk of diabetes, Gill said.

“It’s the plasma caffeine that’s doing that,” he noted.

However, more research is needed, the team said. It is because caffeine has been associated with lower sleep quality and increased palpitations.

Talking about the show, Salim Merchant of music director duo SalimSulaiman said: “I agree with Suniel. This one is an unmissable party and is unlike anything the Indian audiences have seen on stage! For us who grew up dancing to Bappi da’s music, reimagining his ‘Disco Dancer’ score was a matter of huge pride and joy.”

Sulaiman Merchant said: “The range of the music we worked with was boggling. It had so many different shades. It makes you dance, cry, sing, fall in love, grieve!.” (IANS)

Chhetri may be playing his last season: Stimac

KOLKATA, MAR 15 (PTI): Talismanic striker

Sunil Chhetri “may be playing the last season” of his illustrious career, feels Indian football team head coach Igor Stimac, who is hoping that his star player would be saving his best for the last in the coming months.

India’s next big assignment is the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar from January 12 to February 10 next year. The 38-year-old Chhetri is set to play in his third continental showpiece, the most by an Indian, after playing a pivotal role in the qualification tournament here last year.

“At his age, this will probably be his farewell from football. Obviously, Sunil may be playing his last season, and definitely his last Asian Cup,” Stimac said.

“I’m quite sure that the upcoming months will be the best for Sunil Chhetri,” he was quoted as saying in the official All India Football Federation (AIFF) website.

The national team is currently having a five-day camp here ahead of the Tri-Nation Football Tournament in Imphal from March 22. Chhetri, the third most prolific international goal scorer among active players with 84 strikes behind Cristiano Ronaldo (118) and

Lionel Messi (98), was part of the Indian teams that featured in the 2011 and 2019 Asian Cup. The 38-year-old Chhetri, who made his international debut in 2005, played a key role in Bengaluru FC making to Indian Super League final to be played on

Saturday.

“Sunil Chhetri was nowhere to be seen this season. He was on the bench, waiting, preparing himself, working to take his weight down a few kilos, which is very difficult to handle at this age,” said Stimac who has been given the target of reaching Asian Cup quarterfinals if he wants to continue at the helm beyond that tournament.

“But when it was most needed, he was there for his club, helping them, and taking them to the finals. He scored the most decisive goals.”

With 10 months to go for the Asian Cup, the 106-ranked Blue Tigers will play their first international match since September when they take on higher ranked Kyrgyz Republic (94) and Myanmar (159) in the international tournament in Imphal. India drew 1-1 against Singapore and capped a 0-3 loss to Vietnam in their last international matches.

Along with Chhetri, the Indian team has also ageing stars in central-defender Sandesh Jhingan and goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, and Stimac is well aware of the likely change in the core group of players in the near future.

“We need to understand that some of them are of a certain age now. It’s difficult to say, but goodbyes need to come sometime,” the 1998 World Cup bronze medallist Croatian said.

“Along with him (Chhetri), Sandesh (Jhingan) and Gurpreet (Singh Sandhu) are the core strength of our team. I’ve never hidden that. I was never running away from the truth.

“They are free guys, with great characters, strong mindsets and a good mentality, which is a basic platform for us to build the team around. But of course, we need to keep their age in mind. Gurpreet and Sandesh may be there for four, or five years,” he added.

Klopp puts faith in Liverpool’s ‘one percent’ Champions League hope

MADRID, MAR 15 (IANS): Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said his side have just a ‘one percent’ chance of reaching the UEFA Champions League quarter finals, but insisted they would give everything to cause an upset against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Liverpool travel to Madrid needing to make up for their 5-2 defeat in the first leg at Anfield. Speaking in his pre-game press conference, Klopp admitted that “nobody believes” in his side’s chance of overcoming the deficit, but added that “after Anfield I said that Madrid was going to be in the quarterfinals and now I think we have to play. Even if there is only a one percent

option, I would like to try.” “It will be unlikely, but at the same time possible. If we are capable of being negatively surprised by horrible nights, we should also be able to do it positively by some spectacular ones,” said the Liverpool coach.

“We’re going to try to beat them,” insisted Klopp, who said that tactically his side had “only to correct the counterattacks.”

“We have to be very active. We can’t think of winning without defending at an extremely high level. We assume that we will have to take risks, but hopefully we can avoid their counterattacks,” he continued.

Haaland leads Man City to 7-0 rout of Leipzig

MANCHESTER/LISBON, MAR 15 (AGENCIES/IANS):

Erling Haaland became the third player in Champions League history to score five goals in a game as he led Manchester City to an unrelenting 7-0 rout of RB Leipzig in the second leg of their last16 tie on Tuesday.

The victory, which equalled City’s biggest European win, sent Pep Guardiola’s side into the quarter-finals 8-1 on aggregate, with Ilkay Gundogen and Kevin De Bruyne also on target for City in a devastating display at the Etihad Stadium.

It was a record-breaking night for the 22-yearold Haaland, who became Manchester City’s top goalscorer in a season as he took his tally for the campaign to 39 goals, vaulting him past Tommy Johnson’s mark from 1928-29.

He also became the youngest player to reach 30 Champions League goals as he moved on to 33, hitting that mark in 25 games, the fewest ever.

Haaland hinted he was in for a big night with a quick-fire brace, slotting home a penalty in the 22nd minute after Benjamin

Henrichs was adjudged to have handled in the box following a VAR review, with the Norwegian celebrating with a knee slide and salute.

He found the net again 19 seconds after the kickoff.

Haaland pressured Leipzig’s keeper into a poor clearance that fell to De Bruyne. The Belgian’s shot came back off the crossbar and bounced up for Haaland to head home.

FIFA announces new international match calendar

His fifth hat-trick in all competitions this season arrived in first-half stoppage time when Ruben Dias’s header bobbled along the line and Haaland rushed in to force it into the net.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup final will be played on July 19, 2026.

The FIFA Council met in advance of the 73rd FIFA Congress in Kigali, Rwanda, and adopted several key decisions, particularly in relation to the fu-

ture of men’s and women’s competitions, a Xinhua report said.

It unanimously approved the change in format for the 2026 FIFA World Cup from 16 groups of three to 12 groups of four, with the top two and eight best third-placed teams advancing to the round of 32. The women’s international match calendar 2024-2025 will contain six international windows per year.

De Bruyne curled in a stunning seventh goal for good measure seconds before the final whistle.

Manchester City have never hoisted the Champions League trophy, coming

closest in 2021 when they lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the final. They lost to Real Madrid in last season’s semis.

Inter Milan move intoquarters

Inter Milan moved into the UEFA Champions League quarter finals for the first time since 2010-11, as they held Porto to a goalless draw on Tuesday night to eliminate the Portuguese side 1-0 on aggregate.

Inter were looking for a resounding response after a poor run of domestic performance and entered the Estadio do Dragao with a slender first-leg lead thanks to Romelu Lukaku’s late winner, a Xinhua report said. Porto dominated the game but Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana kept the Portuguese side at bay.

The home side were reduced to 10 men as winger Pepe received his second yellow card, and Porto failed to turn the game around. Inter followed AC Milan to become the second Serie A side to reach the Champions League quarters, with Napoli expected to follow them as they host Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday with a 2-0 first-leg lead.

All England Open: Sindhu suffers firstround exit; Gayatri-Treesa

pair advances

BIRMINGHAM, MAR 15

(IANS): Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu suffered an early exit from the prestigious All England Open Badminton Championships after losing to China’s Zhang Yi Man in the women’s singles opening round here at the Utilita Arena on Wednesday. Sindhu, ranked ninth in the world, lost to the world No.17 Chinese shuttler 17-21, 11-21 for her third first-round exit of the year. The former world champion also crashed out early from the Malaysia Open and India Open earlier this year. Pl aying against the drift, the Indian ace started with a measured approach and held a lead at 16-13. However, Zhang’s crosscourt smashes helped to claw her way back into the match and sealed the opening game 21-17. After the change of sides, Sindhu seemed to struggle to lift her game as Zhang Yi Man opened a four-point lead at the time of the mid-game break and built on it to seal the match in 39 minutes.

Earlier in the day, teenage women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri

Gopichand, who got a major breakthrough in their career in the last edition as they entered the semifinal after being promoted from the reserves, got off to a winning start and paved a way to the second round.

Treesa and Gaytari registered a 21-18, 21-14 straight games victory against seventh seeds Thai pair Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai. This was the Indians’ first win over the Thai pair in five meetings. The Indian duo, who reached the semifinal last year, will be up against the winner of the match between the Scottish pair of Julie Macpherson & Ciara Torrance and Japan’s Yuki Fukushima & Sayaka Hirota on Thursday.

India offered three AFC competition slots for 2023-24

NEW DELHI, MAR 15

(IANS): The Qualifiers for the AFC competitions 2023-24 for the Indian clubs will be played between April 4 to May 3, with the country getting three slots from the continental body.

As per AIFF, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has allocated three slots to India -- one in the AFC Champions League Group Stage, one in the AFC Cup Group Stage, and one slot for the AFC Cup Qualifiers.

Slot 1: AFC Champions League, Group Stage The winners of the In-

dian Super League Shield 2021-22 (Jamshedpur FC) and winners of the same in the 2022-23 season (Mumbai City FC) will fight it out in a one-off match on April 4, 2023. The match will be played between the matches of the Super Cup,

with further details to fol-

low in later updates. The winners of the game will get a direct slot in the AFC Champions League 2023-24 Group Stage. Slot 2: AFC Cup, Group Stage

This slot will be determined between the winners of the I-League 2021-22 (Gokulam Kerala FC) and the winners of the Super Cup 2023 (TBD). If the winners of the Super Cup 2023 have already qualified for Slot 1, then Gokulam Kerala FC will get an automatic spot in the AFC Cup 2023-24

Group Stage. If Gokulam Kerala FC win the Super Cup 2023, then they will secure their qualification for the AFC Cup 2023-24 Group Stage.

The qualifying match for Slot 2, should it be required, will be played on April 29, 2023.

Slot 3: AFC Cup Preliminary Round

This slot will be decided between the winners of the ISL 2021-22 Trophy (Hyderabad FC) and the ISL 2022-23 Trophy (Bengaluru FC or ATK Mohun Bagan FC).

Ashwin regains top spot in ICC Test rankings for bowlers

NEW DELHI, MAR 15 (IANS):

India’s ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin grabbed sole possession of the top spot in the latest ICC Test Rankings for bowlers, released on Wednesday after his haul of 6/91 in the drawn Ahmedabad Test against Australia.

Ashwin was jointly named Player of the Series for his 25 wickets at an average of 17.28. That performance has now propelled him to get on top of rankings and be 10 rating points ahead of veteran England pacer James Anderson.

Talismanic batter Virat Kohli has also advanced seven places to 13th position in the ICC Test Rankings for batters after his Player of

the Match effort of 186, ending a drought of 1205 days for a Test century. Australia all-rounder Cameron Green (up 11 places to 26th) and India’s Shubman Gill (up 17 places to 46th) have also progressed after notching centuries in Ahmedabad.

Left-arm spin all-rounder Axar Patel has moved up eight places to 44th on the list for batters and jumping one place to fourth overall on the list for all-rounders following an impressive 264 runs over the four matches. Australia’s left-handed opener Usman Khawaja’s score of 180 in the drawn fourth Test against India in Ahmedabad has lifted him two spots to seventh position and to a career-best 815 rating points.

Travis Head’s topsy-turvy series ended well with the left-handed middle-order batter, and recently turned opener maintaining his fifth place on the rankings for Test batters at a new career high of 853 rating points. New Zealand all-rounder

Daryl Mitchell’s knocks of 102 and 81 in the epic victory over Sri Lanka in Christchurch has helped him reach a career-best eighth position as he touched the 800-point mark for the first time. Sri Lanka’ Angelo Mathews is another one to move up the Test batting rankings, his scores of 47 and 115 taking him from 19th to 17th position. In the bowlers’ rankings, New Zealand captain Tim Southee went from 18th to 12th position after taking 5/64 and 2/57. Indian Wells: Swiatek stops Raducanu to advance to quarters

INDIAN WELLS (USA), MAR 15 (IANS):

World

No.1 Iga Swiatek moved one step closer to a successful title defense at the Indian Wells Masters after defeating 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth round, setting the quarterfinal clash with Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, here.

In back-to-back matches against Grand Slam champions, Swiatek’s confidence showed in her match management. Her ability at just 21 years old to feel out her opponents and then suddenly break away and flip a set or tiebreak on its head is second to none.

In her wins over Bianca Andreescu in the third round and Raducanu in the fourth round, one could see how Swiatek’s surges left her opponents looking to the sky with demoralized grins. Andreescu, by her own admission, played a great match. But Swiatek slammed the door in the

second-set tiebreak by playing seven perfect points.

Similarly, Raducanu played a solid match. She did well to keep pace with Swiatek early, matching the World No.1 from the baseline and defending valiantly from the corners.

But a Raducanu doublefault while serving down 3-2, 0-30 gave Swiatek her best chance to break and the game’s best returner took her opportunity immediately.

Riding a run of 9 straight points, Swiatek broke open the match to

lead 5-2 and closed out the set two games later on Tuesday night.

With a set in hand, Swiatek dominated the second set. With a clear game plan of holding steady and breaking Raducanu down with patient, prolonged rallies, Swiatek closed out the match after 1 hour and 24 minutes.

Swiatek finished with 22 winners and 14 unforced errors, while converting 4 of 10 break points. Raducanu was held to 9 winners to 22 unforced errors, going 0 for 2 on break points.

Bidding to make her second consecutive WTA 1000 semifinal, the 21-yearold Swiatek will face Cirstea for a second time in her career. It will be the first meeting since their dramatic three-set duel at the Australian Open last year. There, Swiatek rallied from a set down to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the Round of 16.

Cirstea booked her spot in her first Indian Wells quarterfinals with a big upset, knocking out No.5 Caroline Garcia 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

Meanwhile, Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic reached the Indian Wells Masters quarterfinals for the first time since 2016 in dramatic fashion, downing No.3 seed Jessica Pegula in a final-set tiebreak.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitova had to save four match points before battling past Pegula 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(11) in a gripping Round-of-16 clash on Tuesday.

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz moved into the quarterfinal of the Indian Wells Masters after his British opponent Jack Draper retired midway with an injury.

The Spaniard led Jack Draper 6-2, 2-0 when the Briton was forced to retire with an abdominal injury that first affected him late in his Monday win against

Andy Murray. In the pair’s second ATP Head-to-Head meet-

ing, both men produced highlight-reel shots early, but Alcaraz had more success in the routine points as he took an early lead, escaping 0/40 in his opening service game with timely power plays on Tuesday night. The 19-year-old Spaniard will face Felix Auger-Aliassime or Tommy Paul next in his bid to return to the semifinals.

7-6(6) and set up a quarterfinal clash with world no. 2 Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the Indian Wells Open here. With the stunning victory, Auger-Aliassime has now reached the quarters at each of the past six ATP Masters 1000 events, including his current run. He has advanced to that stage at seven of the nine Masters 1000s on the cal-

endar, with Monte Carlo and Shanghai the lone exceptions.

In his first ATP headto-head meeting with the surging American, AugerAliassime was battling from behind all evening, dropping the first set and trailing 0-3 in the third. After levelling the decider at 3-3, he stared down three match points at 0/40 while serving at 5-6.
