Bij de coronagereduceerde opening van de Architectuurbiënnale, in een Venetië dat te vrezen heeft van elke centimeter zeespiegelstijging, wordt duidelijk dat voor het antwoord op de vraag hoe we in de toekomst samen zullen leven, spaarzame dan wel overvloedig aanwezige grond en water de cruciale ruimtelijke parameters zijn. Met verstedelijking, migratie, energietransitie en klimaatverandering als de voornaamste wereldwijde trends, zullen ontwerpers grond en water moeten betrekken in hun ontwerpstrategieën en oplossingen voor een leefbare wereld. In deze najaarsaanbieding komen ze beide prominent voor. De redactie van OASE 110 alsmede de auteurs in BiodiverCity, richten hun blik op de grond, om te onderzoeken hoe de bodem, als vaak verwaarloosd onderdeel van het stedelijke ecosysteem, kan worden benut als bron van biodiversiteit en door ontwerpers kan worden betrokken in het ontwerp van duurzamer, leefbaarder steden. Raining Stories, de publicatie bij het Nederlands paviljoen voor de wereldexpo in Dubai, toont hoe Nederlands ontwerp en innovatie voedsel, water en energie kan verbinden en daarmee bodem en water in een productief en duurzaam ecosysteem kan vatten, met het paviljoen zelf als ‘proof of principle’.

At the corona-constrained opening of the Architecture Biennale, in a Venice that fears every centimetre of sea level rise, it becomes more clear than anywhere else that sparse or abundant land and water are the crucial spatial parameters in the answer to the question of how we will coexist in the future. Now that urbanization, migration, energy transition and climate change are the main global trends, designers will have to incorporate these two – land and water – into their design strategies and solutions for a liveable world. That is why land and water feature prominently in this autumn issue. The editors of OASE 110 as well as the researchers in BiodiverCity turn their gaze to the land to find out how soil, as an often-neglected part of the urban ecosystem, can be used as a source of biodiversity and how designers can incorporate it in their designs of more sustainable, liveable cities. Raining Stories, the publication that accompanies the Netherlands pavilion for the Dubai World Expo, shows how Dutch design and innovation can connect food, water and energy and thereby embed land and water in a productive and sustainable ecosystem, with the pavilion itself as proof of principle.

Maar hoe en waar zullen we leven en werken in onze steden van de toekomst? Overal waar de laptop is lijkt het antwoord, maar de ‘dangerous state of disconnection’ waarin dat volgens trendforecaster Lideweij Edelkoort resulteert, vraagt om een tegenreactie, een antwoord, waarmee de verbinding weer tot stand wordt gebracht. En ze ziet de bibliotheek – een aloud instituut in transitie – als dé plek daarvoor, een plek van samenkomst en uitwisseling (niet alleen van boeken). Dit contracyclische denken is ook wat de auteurs van Imagination and participation toepassen bij hun onderzoek naar het bibliotheekontwerp van de toekomst. Net zo contracyclisch, tenslotte, lijkt het fascinerende onderzoek naar een andere typologie in transitie onder druk van digitalisering en mobiliteit: het kantoor. In Back to the Office onderzoeken Ruth Baumeister en Stephan Petermann de meest baanbrekende kantoorontwerpen van de twintigste eeuw, en vragen zich af welke lessen getrokken kunnen worden voor een duurzaam toekomstig ontwerp van een habitat van de werkende mens. Met verder publicaties over onder meer het keramisch werk van Lucio Fontana, de ruige landschappen van Allart van Everdingen, kunst in de openbare ruimte en tot slot een hilarisch portret van ons land in Typisch Nederland van onze Fotograaf des Vaderlands Jan Dirk van den Burg, valt er genoeg te ver- en bewonderen, maar gelukkig ook nog wel te lachen. But how, and where, will we live in our cities of the future? And how and where will we work? Wherever our laptops are, that seems to be the answer, but the ‘dangerous state of disconnection’ in which this results according to trend forecaster Lideweij Edelkoort demands a counter-response, an answer with which connections can be re-established. Thanks to publications including ones on the ceramic work of Lucio Fontana, the rugged landscapes of Allart van Everdingen and art in the public space and, last but not least, a hilarious portrait of the Netherlands in Typical Dutch by Photographer of the Netherlands Jan Dirk van den Burg, there is plenty to wonder and admire, but fortunately also plenty to laugh about this autumn.

Architect Jan Sterenberg (1923–2000) werkte in de overgangsperiode van strakke wederopbouwwijken met rijtjeswoningen naar bloemkoolwijken met woonerven. In Imagination and Participation librarians Rob Bruijnzeels and Joyce Sternheim examine the most important transitions in public library work. They spoke with experts and Dutch top architects who have designed public libraries in the Netherlands and abroad. These conversations and the authors’ own insights and experiences have resulted in a new perspective on contemporary library work that has been translated into starting points for the future architecture of public libraries. The authors have been working on the transition of library work and its consequences for the architecture and design of library buildings for quite some time. Daardoor is onze relatie met het kantoor gespannen. We willen dolgraag weer in fysiek gedeelde ruimten werken, maar we vragen ons ook af of het kantoor en het veeleisende, vervreemdende ritme dat het ons oplegt wel nodig zijn. Kantoren staan zelf ook onder ondraaglijke druk: volgens de eenentwintigsteeeuwse door de industrie gebruikte standaarden moeten ze elke zeven tot tien jaar opnieuw worden ontworpen, managementstrategieën veranderen doorgaans elke vijf jaar en werknemers wisselen om de twee jaar van baan. Een observatorium is een plek voor de waarneming van het heelal. De kunstenaars van Observatorium echter, richten hun blik op de bewoonde wereld. Public Art for Public Life is a summary publication in which the members of Observatorium are searching for the results, significance and lessons of their body of work on the interface between architecture, sculpture and landscape. An observatory is a place for the observation of the universe. The artists of Observatorium, however, cast their gaze upon the inhabited world. All over the planet, they have created works of art that are not only to look at, but also to enter, observe and reflect from. Over the past 30 years, Observatorium produced an internationally significant body of work, from the sculpture Zandwacht (Sand Watch) in the Port of Rotterdam to Dwelling in Seclusion, a work of art devoted to solitude in New York.

For a long time, the theme of soil – as matter, not as territory – has been the quasi exclusive subject of agriculture, geography and soil science. Only in the last few decades, due to a rapidly growing awareness of climate change, has soil increasingly come into focus in urban design, in particular as a matter that can also provide ecosystem services in urban environments.

The editors of OASE 110 believe that soils, although degraded and fragmented, call to be looked upon with a new gaze. Onder onze voeten bevindt zich een wereld vol leven. Verborgen in de bodem werken wel 100 miljoen soorten micro-organismen samen met schimmels en plantenwortels en vormen daar netwerken die zorgen voor een gezonde leefomgeving. Zonder bodem kan de mens niet overleven. Toch gaat de mens onzorgvuldig om met zijn leefomgeving. De groeiende wereldbevolking verhuist naar de stad, annexeert haar ommelanden en drukt letterlijk het leven uit de bodem. Het stadse klimaat, de versteende omgeving en de waterhuishouding zijn nadelig voor vitaal bodemleven. De (stads)bodem wordt grotendeels afgesloten met als gevolg extreme wateroverlast, hitte- en droogtestress, bodemverdichting en habitatfragmentatie.

There is a world full of life beneath our feet. Hidden in the soil, up to 100 million species of micro-organisms work together with fungi and plant roots to form networks that ensure a healthy living environment. Without soil, we cannot survive. Yet we treat our living environment inattentively. The growing world population is moving to cities, annexing surrounding areas and literally squeezing the life out of the soil. The urban climate, urbanized environment and urban water balance are detrimental to healthy soil life. The (urban) soil is largely sealed off and this results in extreme flooding, heat and drought exhaustion, soil compaction and habitat fragmentation.

Allart van Everdingen Meester van het ruige landschap Master of the Rugged Landscape In 1644 reisde de jonge Alkmaarse kunstenaar Allart van Everdingen (1621-1675) door Noorwegen. Een inspirerende ervaring, bepalend voor zijn loopbaan. Hij maakte nadien talloze schilderijen, tekeningen en etsen van ruige landschappen met watervallen, blokhutten en sparren. Deze op het eerste gezicht realistische snapshots van de Noorse natuur blijken bij nadere beschouwing artistieke constructies te zijn, bedacht en uitgevoerd in de werkplaats. Hiermee creëerde Van Everdingen een nieuw genre in de Nederlandse kunst, dat gretig aftrek vond en nagevolgd werd door onder anderen Jacob van Ruisdael. Zijn imponerende berggezichten vormden bovendien in de negentiende eeuw een belangrijke inspiratiebron voor de schilders van de romantiek. Maar hij maakte meer: dramatische zee- en riviergezichten, Hollandse landschappen vol verhalende details, voorstellingen van de bronnen bij Spa en illustraties van het verhaal over Reinaert de vos. Deze publicatie is de eerste gewijd aan het oeuvre van Allart van Everdingen in al zijn verrassende veelzijdigheid.

In 1644 the young Alkmaar artist Allart van Everdingen (1621-1675) travelled through Norway. It was an inspiring experience that set the course for his career. He went on to make countless paintings, drawings and etchings of rugged landscapes with waterfalls, log cabins and pine trees. These seemingly realistic snapshots of Norwegian scenery prove on closer examination to be artistic constructs, conceived and executed in the workshop. Van Everdingen had created a new genre in Dutch art that sold very well and was picked up by other artists, Jacob van Ruisdael among them. In the nineteenth century, his impressive mountain views became an important inspiration for the Romantics. He also painted dramatic seascapes and river views, Dutch landscapes full of narrative details, scenes of the springs at Spa and illustrations for the Tale of Reynard the Fox. This book is the first to be devoted to Allart van Everdingen’s oeuvre in all its surprising scope.
