Positvity – A ray of hope Positive thinking is a mental attitude that admits into the mind thoughts, words, and images that are conducive to growth, expansion, and success. It is a mental attitude that expects good and favorable results. A positive mind anticipates happiness, joy, health, and a successful outcome of every situation. Positive thinking is the belief that good things will happen and that one’s effort will be crowned with success. It is something opposed to negative thinking which is being fearful, apprehensive, and unsure of success in efforts positive thinking is based on optimism, hope, and belief that hard work is never wasted. The effects of positive thinking are magical. Psychologists believe that nothing gears up people to make wholehearted efforts to perform some task as positive thinking. The feeling tones up every muscle of the body and activates every nerve of the mind for perfect coordination between the body and the to do the job when hope enlivens a human being; his/her efforts become coursed and earnest. The vision of achievement and the glory or appreciation associated with it propels a person to work in such a way that no stone is left unturned to achieve the desired goal.
Positive thinking helps a person find a way in a difficult task or a tough situation. He starts feeling that something can be done to overcome the difficulties that are looming large at that moment. It is said that a serious person finds a way, while an idler finds an excuse. The difference between these two is that of the attitude of being hopeful or being without hope. However difficult the task. He puts in earnest endeavors. He may get the favor of luck, and help may come from unexpected quarters. On the other hand, the person who loses hope can never make a wholehearted effort. His battle is half lost even before the start. It is said that life is not a bed of roses. Each person has to face difficult situations in his life. If one becomes fearful and apprehensive about the results, feelings of frustration depression,n and disappointment will enter his mind and hinder his normal faculties of working. He may even up poorer than he is. In the present age of tough completion, nothing is given by the world on a platter. Those who do not put in the required amount of effort are left behind to suffer and repent. If you do not think positively... MARCH 2021 - 001
you may lose the initiative to do well to achieve your objectives. Positive thinking builds willpower. People have reached dizzy heights by sheer willpower supported by hard work. When there is a will there is a way is not an idle statement. It contains a lot of substance inawwayt is not an idle statement. It contains a lot of substance. Life is a battle, one has to fight it fearlessly fight with confidence positive attitude right aptitude with determined and concentrated efforts, which leads to the surest path of success. Fortune is said to favor the brave. God helps those who help themselves. A coward, a pessimist dare not even to fight in the race, it is an optimist and determined soul, who dares to fight has to chance of success. Optimism, determination, undaunted willpower makes every impossible task possible. Lord Krishna is the best imbibe of positivity as since his birth he left his birthplace, then parents, friends love everything but always had a positive approach towards everything. If one can adopt the same approach towards life one can also be an imbibe of positivity. The importance of “right deeds” is well emphasized in Shrimad Bhagavad Gita: Lord Krishna tells Arjuna to follow the path of righteousness, the path of dedication Do Karma, don’t think about the result as per your deeds will follow. It should also be ...
remembered that the positive and constructive thoughts which aim for the betterment of mankind to meet with success. Positive thinking is not hard to attain as it can be done through a constant and conscious effort of an individual. We might also get affected by someone instinctively and on a subconscious level, through words, thoughts, or feelings. Positive thinking is a way of living life with comfort and is 99% effective. People like staying with positive people as they are more trustworthy and helpful. So, to use this weapon in life a person needs more than just to be aware of its existence. He needs to adopt the attitude of positivity in everything he does. The effects of positive thinking are magical. On the other hand, the person who loses hope can never make a wholehearted effort. His battle is half last even before the start. The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts. Your thoughts make you and your vibes too. We attract the energy that we give off. So always spread good vibes. Be such a beautiful soul that people crave your vibes Think Positive, Enjoy Life

Positivity Your brain’s chemical activation is dependent on the foods you eat. There is a proverb that reads, “You are what you eat”. The saying relates to the effect that food has on our health. It is usually associated with food impacting our physical well being, such as eating salads to stay thin or consuming high protein foods to become muscular. However, there is more to the saying than just the standard takeaway, as food not only shapes our physicality, but it also plays a role in impacting us mentally, by influencing our mood. Vitamin C: It enables your body to use carbohydrates, fats, and proteins efficiently. It is essential to your body’s ability to make neurotransmitters, including dopamine, noradrenaline, and serotonin. These neurotransmitters provide mood stability and the prevention of depression. Oranges, lemons, strawberries, bell peppers, and broccoli are all high in vitamin C. Vitamin B6: Vitamin B6 is effective in
treating premenstrual depression. And your body needs it to make mood-boosting neurotransmitters, including serotonin, norepinephrine, and melatonin. Good sources of vitamin B6 include carrots, spinach, sweet potatoes, green peas, lentils and other legumes, and bananas. Omega-3 fatty acids :Your brain is 60% fat. And it needs healthy fats to function well. Mustard seeds are rich in omega 3 fatty acids and have the ability to boost metabolism.Raw walnuts are a rich source of magnesium; and magnesium is a mineral blessed with relaxation properties. Proteins Believe it or not, protein plays a significant role in keeping your mood and energy level, in check. Proper protein levels sustain your energy, keep your mood up, and keep you strong. Next to water, protein makes up most of your body weight. Protein is great for your brain as well. Your brain’s chemical activation is dependent on the foods you eat. Your brain cells neurotransmitters are made of amino acids which are the building blocks of protein, so it’s a ‘no-brainer’. And when you eat protein, it raises the levels of another amino acid called tyrosine that help create the mood-boosting chemicals dopamine and norepinephrine. SELENIUM Barley,Brazil nuts,Broccoli,Chia seeds.,Egg,Flax seeds,Mushrooms As always, eating specific foods with these vitamins needs to be habitual. Eating healthier for a few days or once in a while will not bring the result you’re seeking. I’ve found that making small changes each week and keeping up each habit will bring lasting change. We are creatures of habit and we feel comfortable doing what we are used to doing.

Let us long for Positive Environment How many of us realize that our daily activities add up and influence our living environment both in positive and negative manner? While the negative influences are measured in terms of “Foot prints”, such as Carbon footprint, Water footprint etc., the positive actions taken to minimize their ill effects are called “Hand Prints”!
Industries like thermal power plants, cement, steel, chemical and the like burn huge amounts of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas. As a result, harmful gases , namely, Carbon dioxide, Sulphur dioxide, Nitrogen oxides and others are formed as by-products. Most of the industries cannot afford to implement costly chemical treatment to contain these gases. These emissions are let out to get diluted by the atmospheric gases, thereby bringing down their concentration levels. Thus the industries circumvent the effluent treatment and disposal norms laid down by pollution control authorities. Similarly, many human activities like unabated use of refrigeration gases, open-air incineration of wastes and rice stubs, deforestation, coal mining etc. also load the atmosphere with gaseous pollutants. All such Gases are collectively called Green House Gases, GHGs, and their large accumulation causes global warming by trapping the heat. We are already experiencing the harmful effects of global warming by way of climate change, natural calamities, scarcity of water, depletion of atmospheric oxygen, increased UV radiation, dwindling MARCH 2021 - 005
flora and fauna etc. India is already the world’s third-largest CO2 emitter. It is also very vulnerable to climate change, notably from the melting of Himalayan glaciers and changes to the monsoon. The need of the hour, which is extremely urgent, is therefore is to ‘capture’ the various effluents containing carbon. Carbon capture involves trapping the carbon dioxide at its emission source, transporting it to a storage location (usually deep underground) and isolating it. This means we could potentially grab excess CO2 right from the power plant, creating greener energy. Prompted by United Nations, World leaders have met several times in the past years to take concerted efforts to reduce carbon footprints. In a recent meeting on 12 December 2020, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on governments to declare a climate emergency to accelerate efforts toward carbon neutrality. That will be the UN’s central objective for next year, he said. Elon Musk, the Tesla founder and CEO has made news by tweeting on 27January 2021 that he was willing to donate $100M towards a prize for best ‘carbon capture technology’. This calls for setting up of several Carbon Capture, Utilization and storage (CCUS) projects, similar to or better than about a dozen existing experimental projects operating now worldwide. India is now exploring its potential, as a plant at the industrial port of Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin has begun capturing CO2 from its own coal-powered boiler and using it to make baking soda. The concept of ‘Hand print’ is to decrease human ‘Foot prints’ by taking constant actions towards sustainable development. Individual hand prints like: wise use of water and power resources, effective steps to Reduce- Reuse and Recycle wastes and practice of sensible habits will all eventually have large impact on achieving cleaner environment. Let us hope that our government ...
and public would continue to increase their Hand prints and arrest the spiralling footprints, so that we and our future generations will live in a Positive environment.
It is appropriate here to recollect an oft quoted prayer from our scriptures, full of positive thoughts: Madhu vātā ritāyate/ Madhu ksharanti sindavah/ Madhvīr nah santvoshadhīh/ Madhu nakta mutoshasi/ Madhumat pārthivam rajah/ Madhu dyaur astu nah pitā/ Madhumānno vanaspatih/ Madhumām astu sūryah/ Mādhvīr gāvo bhavantu nah/ Om Madhu, Madhu, Madhu May the winds blow sweetly, May the rivers flow sweetly, May plants and herbs be charming to us, May night and morning be enjoyable, May the dust of the earth be appealing to us, May the heavens be adorable to us, May the trees be lovable to us, May the sun shine delightfully on us, May the cows yield us sweet milk. Sweetness everywhere.

Unsung Heroes No longer - part 3 1. A multi – faceted personality. Corporate professional, aspiring entrepreneur, mom of a charming boy, Paw-rent of two lovely dog, a hobby writer. What are your other faces missed out? How do you manage so much? I’m just an average woman, infact a ‘no-one’, though I don’t deny I’m ambitious and striving to- not remain ordinary! I had numerous obstacles in my career path but I didn’t stop. As far as being multi-faceted is concerned, I have always been a multitasker! Back in school, I was honored with the title - ‘Versatile & talented’ during our farewell post 10th grade boards. I have multiple interests. I’ not excellent in everything ofcourse, but I’m trying to make the most of one life on this earth! I’m also a freelance public speaker by the way, since you asked if any other face is missed out. By nature, I’m a restless soul wanting to make a mark! Scope and opportunities are limited, but I don’t give up! 2. They say writers often have mental blocks. Have you gone through these? How did you manage to break your mind set and get to writing? I’m a hobby writer! I have writing in my blood though, basically flowing in from my Mother. I’m used to blogging since a long time, just that with Covid hitting hard and making us sit at home, I got a little more personal time and space in recent times to let my creativity soar high! Yes, I often come across what is called as Writer’s block and don’t feel creative at all for days. But since it’s an undying interest, I come back to it with a bang! Guess it happens once in a while to most who love to express themselves through writing. 3. Work pressure, Family, your hobbies. How do you manage to have a work life balance? Any tips for young working women professional?
Family, especially my son remains my first priority whatsoever. Working is my choice. I prefer being financially independent, but most importantly, I work because it gives me an identity of my own. I want to be known for being ‘Me’. These thoughts were ingrained in my mind by my Mother from my very childhood and I highly value these words, as I find them really significant in practical life. Pressure at work is certainly there, and many a times work life balance does get hit, but we need to be disciplined in our lifestyle and plan out things. That helps. As far as hobbies are concerned, you always end up making time for things that you love to do, no matter how tired or tied up you are! And it rather helps in refreshing and rejuvenating! Certainly, I would like to give a piece of my mind to the young working women of today! I advise working women to continue working how so ever difficult the circumstances might be. Being a woman, I know and have myself come across numerous hurdles, but I kept moving. Women may need to take breaks in their career, and compromise on paychecks and profiles, but that’s alright. Always be in the look-out for opportunities, and whenever situation favors, just grab it. MARCH 2021 - 009
4. Feminism and pseudo feminism. What are your thoughts on this? Feminism essentially is about both genders getting equal rights and opportunities. This stems from the fact that our country predominantly has been patriarchal in nature and women have been deprived. So real feminists are striving to create a balance and equality in society. But pseudo feminism is also common these days. We get to see some so called ‘feminists’ are having a deep desire to demean men, while standing by women. This is pseudo feminism. There is really no need to put down one to uplift the other. Men and women complement and complete each other, let’s not forget that. Also, a thing that I strongly detest is, giving way to your fantasies and calling it feminism! Let’s not confuse ourselves or mislead people. For example, how a woman wants to dress or carry herself is her choice, and it has nothing to do with being a feminist! Of course our society should also do its bit here. Give a woman that freedom and confidence so that she can make her own choices fearlessly, and does not need to propagate pseudo feminism to exercise her own rights. 05. Family support – Not every woman achiever in this society gets this. How do you feel about this basic etiquette? What’s your take on this sensitive topic? Indeed it’s a sensitive topic. Family support plays a crucial role, in a woman’s career. However, not everyone is lucky to get that. It could be owing to genuine circumstances or even conservative thoughts. I would always request and urge families, be it own parents or in-laws, to support ambitious women. They can really do wonders if a little support is extended to them. Especially married women, or after having children. However, in cases where it’s just not working, I insist that women hold on to their grounds and strive to achieve what they want, no matter how many obstacles they need to surmount. They may fail, but they will rise
again at some point. Also do not fear to fight back when it comes to achieving. ‘Where there is will, they is way’ as they say. There are multiple options in today’s world, we need to keep our eyes and ears open. We also have to be ready to lose somethings to be able to gain something else, a trade off. But yes, a lot depends upon how intense our ambition is and what kind of compromises or choices we are willing to make to give wings to our dreams. To a lot extent, its person specific. 06. What is empowerment according to you? It’s simple. Empowerment to memeans freedom. Be it anyone, a man or woman, they should be free to make their own choices and take decisions. Stop dominating and dictating terms to anyone for that matter. Let everyone have equal opportunities and access to resources. Also, let men and women play equal role whether it is to do with a family or official matter. Each one’s say should count. That’s empowerment. 07. What is strength? How do you define “a successful & a strong woman”? Strength to me essentially means Mental strength. In today’s time, one needs to be physically, mentally and emotionally strong. To be able to quickly bounce back from failure or loss, is what is strength. ‘Success’ will mean differently to different people. A woman might consider herself successful if she is able to give the right upbringing to her children. Or for another woman, success might mean reaching a certain level in her career. Therefore a ‘successful woman’ is the one who achieves what she personally wants. And yes, a ‘strong woman’ is the one who doesn’t succumb to any sort of societal or family pressure, and does what she wants as she believes that’s the right thing to do. Thank you Prerna, for your time and giving an inspirational interview exclusively for the readers of Namaste India. Best wishes to you for all your future endeavors.

Positivity
I have heard many of them talking about positivity, but what is positivity? Positivity is a gesture in thoughts, words, actions, dreams. it goes even beyond that for the desires, wish and even prayers. Positivity has its own vibration. To tell in simple words how our earth has its own gravitational force or magnet its magnetic field, same manner positive vibration, positive thoughts and feelings have its own positive magnetic field. Light overtakes darkness same manner positive feel overtakes all negative feelings. Positive feelings make us feel that the world is ours and we will be very responsible and work towards commitment. If we feel positive, everything will end in positive way. If we all work hard sincerely with positive attitude, we can achieve sure success. When people face some sort of difficulties or problems, they are mentally sick and tired, they feel troubled, disturbed, depressed and disappointed, this shows that they have negative energy. By having any sort of negativity, we cannot overcome anything. But we can overcome the problems if we have positive feeling. If we have positive feeling, we will have sure solution. There will be one or other way to overcome all hurdles and reach real success.
Positive energy always has positive thoughts in mind. Our mind is not a dustbin to keep all the worries sadness and grief. Our mind will work on what we think and say repeatedly. So, let us think positive. Stress, strain are part and parcel of our life. Life is full of obstacles and pleasures. One should face all challenges boldly and courageously. Let us be gratitude to all, from a small thing to a big thing. From each breath to small steps, we take. if we read a book containing positive thinking, definitely that shall be very inspiring and encouraging. This is a great way to start building positivity. Positivity means having the tendency to be positive or having optimistic feeling and attitude. Positivity removes negative thoughts and negative energy and uneasiness. It gives positive change to our life. Let us spend quality time with people who have positive vibration, people who never grumbles or complains at any things. Those who take things positively, their life will be bright. They will be surrounded with friends, family members, neighbours, or colleagues with positive energy only. They help us overcome fear, doubt and negative thoughts. Let us always use the positive words like ‘I can’ ‘I will’ and place a landmark wherever we go. Nothing is impossible to achieve in this world. The negative energy would be easily removed and managed by talking care of ourselves and equipping with positive energy. We can double up the positive energy by taking plenty of rest and energizing ourselves. similarly thanking and recognizing negative thoughts and rooting out evil, negativity from the mind will help us improve. There are so many examples to quote to express the positive nature specially. In spite of all the difficulties, the differently abled people how they come forward and lead a beautiful life,

R.K.Umadevi English Teacher I Panchayat Union Middle School Kugalur in Erode District Tamil nadu
Our Govt. School Doing Fm In Our School One fine morning we teachers of Panchayat Union Middle School, Kugalur located in Gobi block, Erode district, Tamilnadu, had a discussion about, what could be the next thing we could do for the progress of our students ? Our discussion ended up with an idea of launching Chutties FM in our school campus, without any frequency. We listed out things needed to make this FM setup, OurHead Mistress approved and she purchased all the things needed and soon FM setup was ready. An FM station was set up in our office room with a mike and amplifier. It was connected to each and every class with the speaker. When we conduct the program from the office the students of all the classes were able to hear it. This was our Mini FM setup. Date for opening chutties FM was fixed and we were engaged in preparing the first remarkable program by our students in our Chutties FM. The first program was conducted by 8th standard students and we listed out the programs first. We had the daily news , weather forecast, special events that took place in that particular day, birthday wishes, health tips, beauty tips, tips to develop personality, proverbs,
spoken English, mathematical riddles, puzzles, saying of great persons, thought-provoking quotes, stories and songs that could encourage students. Since our's is a middle school our senior most class was eight, so they were given the first opportunity to perform in the opening ceremony of our chutties FM. We teachers guided them to perform in the program and students were more enthusiastic in participating. Other students where eagerly waiting for the launch. The day arrived one particular child did the job of an RJ, they themselves organised the program and conducted it to the applause of all of us. We were amazed and absolutely speechless but our school children's talent and we decided that this could be practiced all the days for 15 minutes after lunch break. Other children's for school were eager and started to prepare various types of programs using their Creative Thinking to participate in this Chutties FM. We started to practice FM regularly and the program was given by students class wise. After launching FM in our school, we were able to see lot of progress in the behaviour and exposure of our students. MARCH 2021 - 012
They started to plan and exposed themselves in a good manner. We witnessed behavioural changes among our children as they listen to good thoughts. Listening is the basic skill for the development of the language and it was then continuously in our school which resulted in a betterment of academic result of our children. Team Spirit was developed among students in performing this FM program. They started learning modulation of voice and conducting the program in an effective way. They came out with new creative ideas and programs that could be done in Chutties FM. Their stage fear is thrown away as they get chance regularly to perform in front of the mike. This FM program stood as a basic line for them to develop their skill further. Thus the launch of this Chutties FM remains as a remarkable program of our school that has been an worthy activity for the development of our students overall skill.

A positive person anticipates happiness, health, success and believe he/she can overcome any obstacle and difficult. Positive thinking is not accepted by everyone. Some consider it as nonsense and scott at people who follow it. But there is a growing number of people who accept positive thinking as fact and believe in its effectiveness. It seems that this subject is gaining popularity as evidenced by the many books, lectures and courses about it. To use it in your life you need more than just to be aware of its existence. You need to adopt the attitude of positive thinking in everything you do. With a positive attitude we experience pleasant and happy feelings. This brings brightness to the eyes, more energy and happiness. Our whole being broadcast, happiness and success. Even our health is affected in a beneficial way. Positive and Negative thinking are contagious. We affect and are affected by the people we meet in one way or other. This happens instinctively and on a subcon
scious level through words, thought and feeling and through body language. Positive thinking helps with stress management and can even improve your health. A positive frame of mind can help you in many ways, such as: Expecting success and not failure. Making you feel inspired. It gives you the strength not to give up, if you encounter obstacles on your way. It makes you look at failure and problems as blessings in disguise. Believing in yourself and in your abilities.> Enables you to show self-esteem and confidence. You look for solutions, instead of dwelling on problems. You see and recognize opportunities. A positive attitude leads to happiness and success and can change your whole life. If you look at the bright side of life, your whole life becomes filled with light. This light affects not only you and the way you look at the world, but it also affects your environment and the people around you. If this attitude is strong enough, it becomes contagious. It's as if you radiate light around you. MARCH 2021 - 015

The Ordeal – By, Gaanz M.Y I just finished reading this extremely inspiring book - ‘The Ordeal’, penned by Gaanapriya Mohan Yogesh. It’s her debut novel though, but I believe she is already a star having written such a power-packed yet emotional tale, in the simplest of words! The book is centred around a teenaged girl who aspires to become a doctor in the army so as to serve the nation. But the pressure of academics and her obsession to excel, takes a toll on her health miserably. She falls prey to severe anxiety disorders and slips into a coma with almost zero chances of survival. However, the girl gives a tough fight and springs back to life after a long struggle, which is nothing short of a miracle. Endless ordeal, yet emerging victorious at the end! How do you think she makes it? It’s her parents’ and brother’s unfailing love and support, and needless to mention, their POSITIVE attitude which works like magic! Ofcourse, the Protagonist’s indomitable will to surmount all obstacles does stand out as the biggest message of this anecdote.
I would personally highly recommend this book to everyone, especially the youngsters of today who seem to be taking their lives for granted. All of us are fighting some kind of battle in our lives. This book at each step reinforces the spirit to- never lose, never give up, stay positive! The story, its characters and the entire sequence of events are immensely realistic and relatable. The bond within the family, especially between the siblings brings about a surge of emotions and makes you feel you’re one of them living it all by yourself. Overall, I loved reading this book and felt it very close to my heart. It does hundred percent justice to the goal it had set, the goal to leave you encouraged and high spirited! If I had to give a rating, I would rate it 10 on 10! A must read Peeps, go for it!

My experience with the Life line of Mumbai #Quarantine Diaries# Recollecting and penning down moments filled with positivity. These are stories based on a bunch of observations. These experiences solidified my belief that happiness is a state of mind. You can have all the riches in the world and still crave for more. Or you can have nothing at all but still, smile along. Maybe I am mistaken, maybe I am not, maybe I am no one to opine at all.
world was their playground. A fellow commuter handed them a pack of biscuits. While I expected each to grab a few, I was astonished when they very systematically took only one and passed the packet around. Armed with that one biscuit, the smile on their face was priceless. I had learnt my lesson on satisfaction that day.
It was the first time I was travelling solo by the signature Mumbai locals. The memory of that day still remains as fresh as a daisy. In this world and city wherein most people think and prioritise on their needs, I saw a bunch of people looking out for each other, their tattered clothes and finite salaries had zero impact on the goodness in their heart.
Next, I collected my ticket and entered the train. It was flocked and I saw 4 people sitting in a space meant for 3. I chose to stand. However, I must have looked like a newbie because a lady next to the seat that I stood against jerked the others on the seat and assured I sat. I was about to thank her when the train stopped at the next station and suddenly a flock of women entered. They started moving and pushing around in this already packed train like it was a game of treasure hunt. Their coveted prize was a place to sit. Since I had a meeting to attend I decided to make notes. As I pulled out my diary, I realised I had forgotten my pen. Sensing my trouble the lady next to me offered me her pen. Surprised I thanked her and took it.
As I waited in the queue to collect my ticket I saw a bunch of street kids. Their clothes were draggled and torn. Their hair and face were mucky, muddy and stained. The kids, however, were oblivious to these facts. Their eyes glittered like specks of dust in the sun, as they jumped from one footstep to the other.

After some time, she got up to get down, seeing this I quickly fastened the pen and gave it to her. Realising that I still had work to finish, she simply beamed and asked me to keep it. It was on that day that I learnt and saw the spirit and humane side of Mumbai. Not in the imposing villas or in the titanic towers but on a local train, amidst people who trudged every single day to make ends meet.
Amchi Mumbai as we lovingly call it is clustered with people. Each individual harbours dreams and ambitions and the quest to achieve them makes him toil day and night. In this fast-paced life, it is rare to find people who think about others and offer to help them. Little did I know that I would find them in the local trains and platforms of Mumbai.

Steps to build a Happy life How’s Your Willpower? Have you ever tried to build a new habit, like lose a few pounds, and then someone offered you a slice of chocolate cake—and you took it? Kelly McGonigal, the willpower expert at Stanford University says when we’re trying to work toward a goal we rely on 3 strengths: “I will” power, “I won’t” power and “I want” power. If you’re relying on “I won’t eat that cake” you’re probably not going to be strong enough to resist it. You’re better off if you stop focusing on what “I won’t” do. Stop focusing on the forbidden cake and instead work on your 2 other strengths. Reframe the situation and use your “I will” power as in “I will eat healthy foods.” “I want” is your third strength. It’s focused on your long-term goal, such as “I want to have a healthy body.” Visualize your long-term goal as you’re being challenged.
ourselves, the stronger our willpower will become. The opposite is true. That rough treatment leads to more slip-ups down the road. Talk about counterintuitive. What we should do is act like a friend and mentor to ourselves. A friend would say, “Hey, that’s not a big deal. Don’t criticize yourself because you’ve been doing well and I know you can succeed.” You can be your best friend and benefit from your advice. What Should You Do When Faced With A Problem? When faced with a problem that needs your solution, should you affirm in a strong voice, “I can do it! I can do it!” or should you humbly ask, “Can I do it?” It turns out the cartoon Bob The Builder was right in saying, “Can we fix it?” Questioning opens creative avenues in the brain, sometimes allowing you to find multiple solutions.
Our Willpower Slips Up Now And Then
Negative Self-Talk
We all slip up now and then. Many of us believe that the more harshly we punish, criticize and shame
A problem with the affirmation “I can do it!” is that your chatty negative self-talk quickly seeks an MARCH 2021 - 021
opportunity to remind you, “Remember that time you failed? Oh, you were so embarrassed.” It’s best to ask “Can I do it?” and marvel at the ideas that surface from the creative parts of your brain. Play Invisible Or Do Acts Of Kindness? Studies show that doing an act of kindness makes us feel less stressed, but also makes us happier and more open to new experiences. Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky asked students to commit five random acts of kindness each week for six weeks. Those who engaged in acts of kindness showed a 42% increase in happiness. Psychologist John Cacioppo reports that engaging in small acts of kindness and generosity, even anonymously, can increase happiness levels. For example, paying a bridge toll for the vehicle behind you elevates your happiness. Then, this often is paid forward by the recipient, giving another happiness boost. Researchers at Harvard Business School conducted a study where they asked participants to recall a time they spent $20 on themselves and a time they spent $20 on someone else. Then they completed a scale indicating how happy they were. People in general felt happier when they recalled spending money on someone else, even if this was done anonymously. So, put on your cloaking cape and start doing random acts of kindness.
How To Develop A Gratitude Habit To establish a gratitude habit you should decide what time of day works best for you and start writing down 3 to 5 things that you’re grateful for. These things can be big or little, but be sure to mix it up. Some days you can write down a little thing: “My tulip bloomed today.” Or you can write about a big thing: “My daughter took her first step today!” The idea behind mixing up big and little things and not repeating the same things is that your brain becomes easily bored. In other words you’re an easy target for habituation. Habituation is a perfect addition to your cocktail party conversation, along with hedonic adaptation. Go ahead and google it. I’ll be writing about that one soon! Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky found that when you’ve established a gratitude habit, after 21 days of gratitude writing, your brain has a tendency to habituate, so you’re better off practicing your gratitude journaling only once or twice a week, not every day. Now since I don’t want you to waste that daily time you’ve set aside for gratitude, I suggest you substitute practicing a random act of kindness, picking something you plan to savor, or perhaps replacing one of your negative self-talk phrases with a positive one. Five minutes a day will do it. You should have 5 minutes for yourself, shouldn’t you?

Positive Thinking Sheetal was worriedly pacing to and fro in her living room. Mohan was peacefully sitting on the couch reading a newspaper, completely unaffected. Sheetal was all worked up. Her son, Shardul should have been home almost two hours ago. Why was he late? Why was his phone switched off? She was irritated to see Mohan sitting so carefree. "Mohan! Aren't you worried? Do something." Mohan peered up from the newspaper and looked at his anxious wife. He replied calmly, "Sheetal, Shardul is a matured young man. He must be busy or he must have gone out with his friends. It's a weekend." She came and plopped on the couch next to him and grumbled again. "What if something has happened to him? What if he's met with an accident? What if his mobile got lost?" Now Mohan was piqued. "Why are you thinking negatively? Delay doesn't mean that he is late because of all the wrong reasons. Think that may be something good has happened with him."
How many of us think like Mohan? And how many of us get all worked up negatively, like Sheetal? You'll be surprised to know that 90% of what we are or what happens with us is because of our thought process. I think even God knew the importance of the brain and that's exactly why it is placed right on top and not in any other part of the body. Our thinking can make or break us. It's one kind of a magnetic pull which is within our body. And every disease under the sun is somewhere along the line related to what you think and how you react to different situations and circumstances. Let us say, there are five people sitting in a room and suddenly they see a fire blazing in the corner. Do you think all five will react and respond similarly? One might panic and start screaming. Another might leap to go extinguish it. Some might just get up and walk away. Yet another might call for help. And the fifth one might still be wondering what to do. The fire is the same for all five of them. It is the reaction that makes the difference. MARCH 2021 - 023
Positive thinking, what exactly does it mean? It means to expect good and favourable results in any situation. It means to create thoughts that produce positive energy in you. And believe me it is directly related to the law of attraction. You think positively and all good will happen with you. You think negatively and be sure to get the same results. The biggest benefits of positive thinking: it keeps your body disease free and keeps you looking younger, filled with energy. It definitely adds years to your life. And by the way, who doesn't want all this? If you haven't thought on these lines till now, don't stress. Start from today. It's never too late. As long as there is life, there
is time. Google is filled with how to achieve positive thinking. Don't expect miracles overnight. Stop finding faults in yourself and in others. Slowly, but steadily move towards looking for something good in everything. The peace and happiness will seep in your life gradually. You will not only see the change, but feel it within you, in your heart and in your health. Welcome each new day with a sunshine smile and most certainly, life will smile back at you.

Saraswathi Priyadarshini Theatre Teacher
Character Education and the Class room
Character education and social emotional learning is an integral part of Theatre-in-Education. Virtues such as kindness, gratitude, compassion, generosity are critical skills to be honed as we teach our students how to be more human. Empathy is one such soft skill that needs to be shared, it is important and crucial that we provide our students with opportunities to have relationships that foster empathetic connections. Merely stating the definition of empathy which is ‘understanding and sharing the feelings of others’ is not going to cut it. With the younger students practical exercises and involvement is critical. At the primary school level most of the lessons in literature and moral education provide excellent opportunities for involvement and discussions. One such example that stood out for me, was about 7 years ago when a lesson in grade two about Helen Keller was enacted. Helen Keller as we know was an American author, disability rights advocate, political activist and lecturer. Miss Keller had lost her sight and hearing after a bout of illness at the age of nineteen months. The lesson was about her early years and challenges. In the drama I involved many children to portray and enact various other disabilities and challenges, as the title music of “Taare zamein pe” played in the background, there
was not a dry eye as students and teachers of grade two watched the brilliant heart touching performances of young budding actors, the role of Helen Keller was played by Surabhi Sridhar with great involvement, she is now in grade 9 and her acting skills have evolved immensely. I remember her eyes closed trying to walk around the living room on stage bumping into furniture and her other classmates, she turned around and said to me “ma’am it’s very hard to be blind”. That’s it. That was the entire purpose of this. To see the audience connect and emote and to evoke the deep involvement of the actors. My very supportive colleagues would often tease me at the end of such shows saying “are you happy now, you made everyone cry”. Helen Keller was also the first deaf and dumb person to earn a college degree. After every drama, we have a very insightful and deep discussion with the students, the interaction is rich and most memorable. Helen Keller’s story of hope and endurance highlights her resilience, that the students can draw from in times of personal adversity much later in life. Empathy is not a fixed trait, it can be fostered. It has to be encouraged and cultivated by parents and teachers. These are a few ways I have tried to teach the social emotional skills in my classroom MARCH 2021 - 025
1.Read stories or watch movies with the students. This works well with Pre-primary and primary students. Observe them as you read, or as they watch the movie, see them resonate with the story and emote. Later, discuss, ask questions about what they heard or saw, “how do you think he/she felt at that moment?”, “what would you have done?”. Help the students see the world from another person’s perspective and help them relate to the emotions. 2.Talk about feelings - have cut outs of all the emotions like the emojis happy, sad, angry, confused and so on. Let the students take turns to hold each cut out and tell the class when the feel these emotions, the others listening will connect feelings with behaviour. Doing this in a group will also help them bond. 3.Create a constant environment and opportunity to show empathy in the classroom no matter what subject you may be teaching. Ask such questions often, A friend lost in the running race, what would you say to him/her? How would you feel if you are talking and no one is looking at you? How would you react if your mother lost her mobile phone or your grandmother had trouble finding her glasses? Set high ethical expectations and show instant appreciation for good behaviour. 4.Be a role model. Everybody needs somebody. Be the model, be the mirror. Treat others the way you would like to be treated. Tell them constantly that you are there to listen to them if they wish to speak to you. Teach them not to indifferent or prejudice to people of color or other cultures. 5.Finally, my favourite way to teach, act out the lessons, role play the characters from the book and discuss, there is always scope to discuss multiple soft skills and life skills through drama Signs of empathic concern is seen in children as early as 8 to 10 months, they are born with immense possibilities and a massive appetite to learn at home and at school. I fondly recall a personal incident of 10 years ago, when I along with my two sons drove into our basement late one night, my older son Shaun who was about 10 years old noticed the watchman sleep
ing on the hard cement floor covered in a thin cotton sheet with his hands folded in for a pillow, as I unlocked the apartment door my son rushed in, grabbed his own pillow and run down to the basement, quietly placing the pillow near the half sleepy man, he walked back with an angelic smile on his face. Empathy is not a fixed trait and it can be fostered. But like all aspects of development the quantity and quality of this skill can vary dramatically from one child to another. Nothing is more important than empathy for another human being’s suffering, to understand the challenges faced by the differently abled. When children learn to be empathetic early in life, they become adults who treat others with kindness, respect and understanding. They become empathetic parents, spouses, co-workers and friends. The role of education is to help children understand the world within them as much as it is to understand the world around them. And more importantly the aim of education in my humble opinion is to build students who are compassionate and engaged individuals. This is possible if we as teachers and parents invest enough time and effort towards the important aspect of building humanity. No two schools are alike but the principles that we apply on education can be. Speaking about principles, I take this opportunity to thank the principal Sribala Srinivasan of primary school at Carmel School Padmanabhanagar, Bangalore for giving me the creative space and opportunity to develop my passion for Theatre-in-Education for the past 11 years. Gratitude is not only the greatest of all virtues, but the parent of all others. I conclude with one of my favourite quotes of Oscar Wilde whose passion for theatre resonates with me, “I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” MARCH 2021 - 026

The Well Short story - P.Raja (Dr.P.Raja is a bilingual writer from Pondicherry with 38 books in English and 16 in Tamil. www.professorraja.com)
More than three decades ago there was a well in the backyard of our house. Our house was quite spacious when compared with the neighbouring ones. Since most of our neighbouring houses were all huts, no wonder that our house passed for a bungalow. To everyone in our village, my grandparents were known as bungalow dwellers. The so called bungalow housed only five people – my grandparents, my parents, and myself. The well magnanimously supplied unpolluted crystal clear water to everyone of us. We used the water for bathing, cooking, washing clothes and floors, watering plants both in the backyard and in the frontyard. The plants ungrudgingly gave vegetables to us and silk soft flowers to the plethora of Gods who snugly sat or stood in our pooja room; some sat on the heads of the two women at home. I was the only toddler in my house and one can imagine the love and affection I commanded from all the four. While asleep I was in the cradle and while awake I was in the crook of one arm or the other. In short, my people at home rarely allowed my wee feet to touch the earth. Among the four at home my favourite was my grandpa. I loved to spend every second of the day with him for he carried a sackload of stories inside his skull, and entertained me with short or long ones depending upon the occasion and time. Around six o’ clock in the morning he pulled me out of the embracing hands of sleep and mounted me on his robust shoulders and carried me to the nearby paddy fields, where we eased ourselves. That was the time when my grandpa began his morning lessons. Ever since he taught me the art of identifying the birds
from the cries they made, I became familiar with almost all local birds – from the morning sparrow to the night owl. And whenever I expressed my joy at the sight of a new bird and its strange cries, my grandpa said, “All the grace of God.” It was during such times in the paddy fields, my grandpa pointed his finger at one green plant or the other, and lectured on its medicinal value while I feasted my eyes on the geometrical shapes of the leaves and wondered at the lovely colours of the flowers those simple green plants bore. When I asked my grandpa to say more about the mysterious colours of flowers the green plants produced, my grandpa said, “All the grace of God”. Whenever he talked of the grace of God, I made him talk more of God by asking several questions to feed my inquisitive mind. “God! Who is God, grandpa?” “Oh, you are a curious child. I’ll tell you… God is creator, protector and destroyer,” he answered with the confidence of a sage who had seen God. “Where is he?” “Oh, He is everywhere.” “Does he punish like my school master?” “Oh, he does. He will never spare you when you commit a mistake. And you should always see to it that you are free from mistakes.” I became suddenly wistful and touched my grandpa’s thigh. “What if a mistake creeps in at some time?” “Definitely you will be punished. You will have to suffer for it,” he said, still smiling at me. “Then grandpa, you should show him at least once,” I said. MARCH 2021 - 030
“Surely,” he said, “when time comes.” His words echoed in my head, whenever he took me near the well and gave me a perfect bath. With just a loin cloth to cover his nakedness, he would carry me to the well and strip me naked. The rim of the well’s parapet reached close to his hip and I reached only to his knee. He leaned over the parapet and sent down the iron bucket by releasing the rope through the pulley and baled out. He upturned three to four buckets of water on his head before he spared one for me. I gasped for breath when the whole bucket was emptied on my head at one go. And that gave my grandpa a rib-tickling laughter. After emptying a couple of buckets of water on my head, he would give rest both to the bucket and the rope. Then the real cleansing process would start. Grandpa would run his fingers on my scalp and with his well manicured nails would scratch the dirt off. He would apply the same process all over my body and that too with added strength. It was always a painful experience for me but he drove away the pain with his lovely anecdotes from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana and thereby inspired me to interact with him. “Why should we take bath everyday?” I asked him. “That is because God likes us to be clean.” “Is the God, you are always talking about, clean?” I asked. “It all depends on how clean you keep him,” he answered. “Huh! How can I keep him clean, when I do not know where he is, though you say he is everywhere.” My grandpa merely smiled in response to this. There was something about his smile I didn’t quite like. “You say he is everywhere but I do not see him anywhere,” I said. “You will see him one day,” my grandpa said carefully articulating.
“Where? “ I was very curious. “Are you in a hurry?” “Yes! Tell me now.” “The time is not yet ripe, my boy,” my grandpa said. I began to feel uneasy. Then I began to brood. When will the time ripe to see God? I asked almost everyone in the family. Most of the time I asked myself. My grandpa laid his hand on my arm and smiled up at me, bewildered by my curiosity. One fine day, when I was on the verge of losing hope, my grandpa had a fall from the top rung of the ladder and hit the back of his head against a wooden pillar inside the house. My father rushed him to the nearby government hospital and when he came back, he looked very different with his bandaged head. I smiled at his strange headgear. He coolly said, “All the grace of God.” I have been looking forward to it for weeks, ever since my grandpa said about the not yet ripe time. “God, grandpa, God! Is the time ripe for me to see God?” I asked with a sense of urgency. “I think it’s not yet,” he said. A smile of great sweetness spread over his face. He lifted me up in his arms and whispered. “One day you will see him… He resides in our well. Such a long way down.” I never knew that those were his last words for me. He failed to wake up the following day. My grandpa’s absence made me feel very lonely. That loneliness drove me into thinking and rethinking of what all he said in all these years into my young ears. Everything, almost everything I saw everyday, from a blade of grass to the twinkling star in the firmament reminded me of him and his short lectures on life and reality. I grew up but not yet tall enough to peep into the well. But the curiosity to see the God residing in our well grew day by day.
MARCH 2021 - 031
One night when the moon was blasting its beams all over the backyard of the house, I emboldened myself to lean over the four feet tall wall of the well with the noble purpose of seeing God. I stood on my toes and craned my neck. That did not serve my purpose. “If there is a will there is always a way.” My grandpa’s words, said long ago, echoed in my ears. I searched for a way. I found one. The upturned bucket came in handy, and I stepped on it. Hee-ho! I could peep into the well. I did. I saw someone… the face was not quite clear… a dark head trying to do exactly what I did. The rickety bucket shook trying to topple me. I jumped out of it. But the decision to see the face of God residing in the well began to overpower me.
Around noon on the following day, I tip-toed my way to our well. Balancing myself on the upturned bucket, I raised myself a little above the parapet of the well, and holding on to it tightly, I slowly peeped into the well. I saw...I saw… I saw the face. Does God look like me? Perhaps I am made in his own image. I rushed into the house, all the time howling. “I saw God… I saw God.” People at home laughed at me. They were not sure what made me go cranky. But I saw my grandpa, now reduced to a photograph on the wall, giving me an encouraging smile.

"Well Kaviya!" he paused as he realised that she wouldnt know who Kaviya was. "My wife" he continued "would not allow
me to to drink coffee with sugar in it, therefore initially I told you to bring coffee with sugar. However, than started thinking of all the fight we had over a cup of coffee. Whenever we were out somewhere the way she would specifically order a coffee without sugar. Times where I have made her drink coffee without sugar, because I didn't want to suffer the bitter taste of coffee alone. So this one is for her". He paused and picked up the cup. "I know that even when I am busy with my work and spend less time with her due to busy schedule she has always ensured I dont compromise with my health. I wonder how she does it so effectivly?" "So without sugar is just fine." He said and smiled at her. "That's very sweet of you Sir!" she said with a smile on her face and left. Looking at the cup of coffee he said "I love you Kaviya. What would I ever do without you." and sipped his coffee. MARCH 2021 - 033

Three, 60 Degrees Antonio was having dinner with his two best friends on a round table, at a place where lightings and balloons were the decorations and it was just the three of them. Antonia’s phone tooted a notification. Antonio glared at the disturbance, it was a message from an unknown number. He accessed his phone and read. The content proved to be surprising for him. He spoke something, monotonously, with no expressions to one of his best friends, while the other was already in tears of guilt and shock. Then Antonio spoke nothing further and left. His walking away, had already apprised the unaware best friend about the happening. The extrovert woke from his nightmare, Antonio had his eyes wide open. He rose from the comforting position, resting one hand on the bed and the other attempting to wipe away the sap on his face. He moved away from the bed, way differently from how the dream had moved him. The direction of dream, led him to just not consider it as a random imagination. He wasn’t able to get over it. Two days later, Antonio Marcus Lutz walked towards his classroom, aiming for the door with the label “Class 9-C” on it,
with a logo of the best school in Vatican City, “Austin International School”, nonchalantly on the outside. He stepped in the classroom, approached the 25th and last bench of the class and placed his bag on it. Alike the last two days he had not been very friendly, expressive and talkative to anyone in the class, rather he had been rude to some of his classmates and occupied in his thoughts, unlike the other days. Its not that no one noticed this and let Antonio be the way he carried himself to be, instead everyone in the class was onto making a matter of concern, which might not be wrong. His classmates were worried for him, as he was kind of, the leader of the batch. This was surprising for others, not for Antonio, that his two best friends weren’t over reactive about it, instead they often tried to run away from the situation. It was recess time, Antonio’s favourite. He walked across all the conversations, laughs, giggles and ideas popping in the classroom, towards Stacey, who was standing in the corner, displaying a science module. His heart wasn’t thumping hard, he was clear with what he was doing, he was nor confident neither concerned much MARCH 2021 - 034
about the outcome, when he was going to first time talk to one his best friends, in two days. He went to Stacey and asked, “How did you think I would never get to know”? Antonio’s heart was swollen after coming face to face, with the truth of his truth being expelled out of his trust and represented amongst the ones, who were Antonio’s friends, not the ones he trusted, not the ones who made a substantial part of his school life. Antonio thought Stacey would walk up her memory lane with a bag of guilt on her shoulders, but she did not display any sign of guilt or a need for forgiveness. Replacing that with tears of belonging, she exclaimed, “Oh this is the part where you want me to say a sorry to you, but you know what? My fate is a better writer than you”! Antonio felt like the cookies, which were dipped in sizzling vegetable soup instead of a glass of milk. He now surely had adrenaline run in his body. He clearly did not understand… What was she speaking? Why? Has she lost the knowledge of what means what, in the volcano suddenly erupted in her body? Stacey took a deep breath and continued, “You won’t be able to give me such an opportunity anymore, more than me being sorry it’s good for you to be thankful to the fact. The fact that I am leaving”. Stacey fell into tears, she couldn’t escape the border of, “I am leaving” and she couldn’t utter anything further. She felt, she had Tourette's syndrome and she couldn’t stop saying, “I am leaving and going away”. Stacey loved her school, though she wasn’t the best at studies, she just enjoyed the idea of school. She loved studying at school, spending time with her friends, especially the best friends that she had. She loved her teachers, the recess time, the events, everything. For her to leave her school, was like a rabbit leaving his carrots. Stacey had been strong, since the two days of her getting to know about the geographical leap coming up in her life. Even
when her two best friends weren’t there with her, she just kept avoiding the domination of feelings on her last days of learning, in the school. She considered the ruckus in her best circle of friends, as one of her last learnings from the Austin International School. Wiping her eyes Stacey said to Antonio,” Try to meet me at the PT ground after the last period.” Moving away she just said, “One last time make efforts for me.” Almost all lobes of Antonio’s brain were facing turbulence, he just couldn’t accept that he walking from the dinner table was nothing in comparison to Stacey’s walking away. He was a positive person, he thought that he better forget about the leaving. He warned himself, that he had time till the last period to forget the negativity and spend the last moments with her best friend with a shine of buoyancy. The last period ended, Antonio walked towards the PT ground, with an eerie mixture of feelings that he hadn’t felt in years. All of them had completely, forgotten about the reasons which had led them to not talk to each other for those two days. They talked, they felt, they cherished, they imagined, they reminded, they commented, they regretted, they tried to forget, they wrote, they cemented and eventually ended. Stacey said,” Before we part, I made something!” She pulled out a medium sized, common looking and brown coloured photo frame. Then a second photo frame and then the third one. Each of them was a framing of a drawing made of oil pastels. It had a visual of three kids holding hands. After removing all three and handing them. Stacey said,” One for An, one for me and one for Esme.”

POSITIVITY - Self – Assertion The mess around is the result of the tempest within. Whatever that happens to us is not really a surprise, as it seems to be. It is the consequence of the thought process that happens in us, which may or may not have missed our notice. The circumstances which ensnare us can be changed for the better when viewed with the right perspective and a positive attitude. Words have power. It affects more the one who speaks than the one who hears them. The words we speak orient our thought life which in turn directs our actions. The more we speak good things over our life, the more our lives change. Here are ten self assertive verses which if spoken out can bring dramatic life changing effects: 1. I am awesome. I love myself and I deserve to be loved. 2. I am worthy of success, good health and prosperity.
3. I succeed in everything I do, because I work with all my heart. 4. I succeed in drawing people to me, to my side. 5. Favor surrounds me and I am welcomed everywhere I go. 6. The Creator of the Universe has fashioned me with enormous talents. My talents are exhibited as I work. 7. I live in peace with my family and happiness is the fruit of my relationships. 8. I deal wisely with the immature and the incompetent and I am successful in winning hearts. 9. My future holds the best of my days and I will live to see them. 10. My Creator loves me and turns whatever is evil in my life for my good, for I am highly favored.

Saraswathi Priyadarshini Theatre Teacher
Dear Teacher, hold on!! At the Gurukul, you were revered as God, The most noblest of all professions, for this you were called. You wanted to change the world and raise the bar, Your classes were tedious, but your student’s genuine interest you did not wish to scar. Your classroom wasn’t meant to be quiet and vex, You try so hard to make the mundane -extraordinary and simplify the complex. As a teacher you earned the respect of being good and fair, Working in front of the world’s toughest audience with patience and care. The pandemic shrunk your physical classroom into electronic screens to your overwhelm, You had to learn, innovate and adapt as you shifted to the virtual realm. Sometimes you feel you don’t have the emotional strength to continue, The celebration of who you really are and your best moments are still overdue. How can you use everything you have to serve, something that is greater than your reach, Is it because God himself enabled you and called you....to lead and to teach?

I came to the earth from heavenly abode
From there began my life full of scars
As a small graceful star, a child of God
I never got love but only the curse.
I filled the room with screams and cries
Two brothers and their only sister I was
But my mom said it wasn’t good.
I didn’t think my birth was a great loss.
Then I heard a shout and I trembled
Isn’t it a pleasure, a boon to be a girl
I saw my father a lot troubled.
Who’is loving, caring and shining pearl.
He glanced at me as if was criminal
But why people think them to be a burden?
He damned his fate, called me an animal
And if girls are born, why just abandon?
