“War room” established for Swakop mourns Covid-stricken Swakopmund death of inside

Sharlien Tjambari

The Constituency Councillor of the Swakopmund Constituency of the Erongo Regional Council, Cllr Ciske Smith-Howard, is setting up a Covid-19 war room in the holiday town, to coordinate a renewed assault on the pandemic. An integral part of her strategy was to call upon all registered nurses, doctors, pharmacists and even retired health care professionals to come forward as volunteers. Cllr Smith-Howard's appeal has been greeted with overwhelming response. So far fifteen health care professionals have agreed to assist. Cllr Howard-Smith appealed to those who want to join the fight to make only a small fraction of their time available to assist. Swakopmund has experienced soaring Covid-19 infections in recent days. The town's health care system is under severe strain. Not only at the state hospital and clinics, but also staff in the Ministry of Health and Social Services that needs to keep general services going. Swakopmund residents are feeling the effects of this strain on the health care system. They are frustrated by long long queues at the various health points in the holiday town. They have to fall into long queues at the Covid-19 testing point, and have to bear long queues at the Covid-19 vaccination point. Not only is this uncomfortable, especially for those who are not feeling well or who have to take time from their schedules to get vaccinated. People also feel it is in these queues where you are highly exposed to infection of the Coronavirus. In messages send via social media, Cllr SmithHoward said: “At the moment we are facing a massive pandemic in this country. People are dying every day, it's not like anything that we've experienced before. It really is a problem”. “Our hospitals are overflowing. We simply cannot do this alone. Everybody is expecting the vaccine to be rolled out quickly, and we do not have enough hands to make this happen. Please get in touch with me if you willing to volunteer as a nurse or doctor”. With regard to the Covid war room, great effort will be made to maintain the vaccine roll-out, and to get people to vaccinate. Those who will be assisting at the war room will also work closely with the relevant authorities to ensure the appropriate responses to the pandemic is maintained.

In her capacity as the Chairperson of the Erongo Regional Council, Smith-Howard will also roll out the Covid-19 response to all settlements in the Region which does not have a formal local authority. Continues on page 2

Amended Covid-19 its Fire rules now in effect Chief Residents in the Erongo Region are cautioned that the revised Covid-19 rules will be strictly enforced. The Namibian Police yesterday urged people to continue to comply with Covid safety rules which include wearing a face mask in public places, and in doing so wear masks correctly by covering both the nose and mouth. Many people are observed only covering their mouths with the mask, and this practise should be discouraged. Other interventions include washing of hands, maintaining social distancing and avoid crowded places. The Covid-19 Regulations were also amended and came into force at one minute past midnight on Thursday (17 June 2021). The revised rules are: *Gatherings are restricted to ten people only, and may not go beyond two hours. *Public transport operators may only carry half Continues on page 2

Swakopmund magistrate’s court burgled twice within a week The magistrate's court in Swakopmund has been burgled for the second time this month. The latest break-in occurred during the night hours of Sunday/Monday, barely a week after a burglary during the night of Tuesday/Wednesday 7/8 June. Two cases of burglary are investigated by the Swakopmund Police. In both incidents the administrator's office was targeted. In the first burglary a laptop, a hard drive, and cash were stolen. In the latest incident a drilling machine, an angle grinder, a usb-memory stick, a charger, a computer mouse and laptops were stolen. Police suspect an insider might have collaborated with the burglars. It is also not believed the burglars were targeting criminal investigation dockets, as it is kept in a secure facility in the complex of which the location is not divulged to the public. On the pictures on page 2: the state in which the burglars left the office during the break-in. A charge of malicious damage to property will also be added, should the culprit or culprits be apprehended.

“War room”

Continued from page 1 Howard-Smith, together with a team of volunteers will be setting up a war room and for the next few weeks she would like to make sure that they get to as many people as possible in Swakopmund and to make sure that they get the roll out of the vaccine done and then further into the region, “with the more help I get the more I can do”, said Howard-Smith. Howard-Smith further said: “Our systems are overstretched, we not getting the vaccine to everybody quick enough, there is a lot of queuing at the hospitals, there is a lot of queuing to get the vaccine and even that is creating a situation were people are exposed to the virus. I need to make sure that we get to the companies, to the corporates and we go and vaccinate at their place of work to avoid people having to stand in long queues and avoid people getting further exposed to the virus”. “Please come to me and say Ciske I can give you at least some of my time in a day”. Please contact Ciske on 0816817211. On Thursday morning when Namib Times spoke to Howard-Smith, she confirmed that the response from health professionals have been overwhelming and so far, she received calls from 15 people who are interested and who will assist her. The project for rolling out the vaccine is run under the Ministry of Health and Socials Services. Howard-Smith said: “We are assisting the health ministry and we are adhering to the rules and regulations put in place by the ministry during the rolling out of the vaccine”.

Swakopmund mourns death of its Fire Chief Sharlien Tjambari The Swakopmund community mourns the passing of its Fire Chief, Adri Goosen. Goosen passed away in a medical facility in Windhoek on Monday, after a health struggle of several weeks. Goosen joined the Swakopmund Municipality as Fire Chief in 2011, a position he retained until his passing. Wesley Metjavi, the Acting Deputy Fire Chief, who joined the Swakopmund Fire Brigade as a fire fighter the same time as Goosen in 2011, described the late Goosen as a humble, committed and very experienced colleague. “He did not discriminate against age, gender or race. He treated everyone equal. He always used to say work comes first before anything else. He took his job very serious”, said Metjavi. According to Metjavi, Goosen was always

willing to help, teach and assist those who needed assistance. “If you are willing to learn, he will teach you. If not, he would leave you behind. That is how he was”. Goosen was popular in the Swakopmund community. He was always available to respond to an emergency. “Everyone knew him. He always went that extra mile. Especially for fire victims. He would for instance go out of his way to make sure fire victims had food to eat after a fire has destroyed their homes. He dug in his own pocket for money to assist if there was not money available at the time”, added Metjavi. In his career Goosen trained many fire fight-

ers. People who had the opportunity to work with him have learned a lot from him. “We will transfer the knowledge he instilled in us to future generations”. Mrs Marolese Niemand, the Human Capital Practitioner at the Swakopmund Municipality, said no words can describe the legacy Goosen leaves behind. “He taught us to be brave and to tackle our problems with confidence, even if it is hard”. Niemand said Goosen made a big impact on the community and everyone, he changed many lives. The newly appointed Deputy Fire Chief, Bainga Matengu, will be the Acting Fire Chief for the immediate future. He joined the Fire Bri-

gade on 3 May when Goosen was already on sick leave. Although he never met Goosen before, he felt the legacy left behind was immense. “I have big shoes to fill now”, he remarked.

Pothole is now a grave traffic danger - please act! A massive pothole in Swakopmund's Langer Heinrich Crescent in the new industrial area of Swakopmund is becoming a critical situation. The pothole is growing by the day and poses a traffic danger and is damaging smaller vehicles. Business owners in the area have reported the situation to the municipality of Swakopmund for months now, without any response. The matter was subsequently taken up with the Namib Times. The newspaper was told the pothole has been there for over a year, and is now growing at an alarming rate. “A vehicle of a client of mine was damaged by this pothole. When she reported this to the Swakopmund Municipality, she was told they are looking at fixing it. This was already14 days ago”, says one business owner in the area. Adding the problem is now becoming grave and the municipality must act without delay. Another business owner told the Namib Times that even the traffic department of Walvis Bay communicated the problem to the Swakopmund Municipality, but that too fell on deaf ears.

Duinesig makes debut season Rudi Bowe

Duinesig High School in Kuisemond Walvis Bay will make their debut season into school rugby in the under 15 and 19 rugby teams.

The Capricorn Eagles that competed in the Kwibuka Women's T20 tournament at The Gahanga in Kigali Rwanda

Capricorn Eagles takes second place Rudi Bowe

Pre-tournament favourites the Capricorn Eagles was trumped by a spirited Kenyan women's team in the final of the Kwibuka Women's T20 tournament at The Gahanga in Kigali Rwanda. The Kenyan women has never beaten Namibia before in a T20 game but on the crucial day their batters made light work of the chase with some good attacking display to bundle the Namibia women out for just 69 to win the final of the tournament by 7 runs to register their fourth Kwibuka T20 title. The Capricorn Eagles thumped Nigeria by 91 runs in the semi-finals on Friday but unfortunately on the day of the final, things didn't happen for them and as they came unstuck against a high-spirited Kenyan team. Namibia had some impressive victories during the group stages as they also beat Kenya by 36 runs in their first encounter. The coach of the Capricorn Eagles Namibian women's team Francois van der Merwe said the girls competed well in the Kwibuka Tournament with great on field skills and played exceptional cricket in the first five games. It's unfortunate that the women could not win the tournament but it was an allround great experience for the team. Van der Merwe said " Despite the defeat, the whole experience was a big learning curve and we haven't played international cricket for the last 18 months, so to go back into a competitive tournament like this was really good and as a coach I'm really happy where we are with our skill levels. Unfortunately, it's just those big matches that we have to pull off when we get into the finals again.” "So overall I'm very satisfied, there are very good youngsters coming through the system

as well and we just have to focus a bit more on our batting because we want to get that aspect of our game much stronger. But we've got a lot of good youngsters coming through, so the future is very bright for Namibian women's cricket” Van der Merwe said Namibian players excelled in the individual statistics for the tournament, with Namibia's Victoria Hamunyela finishing second with 15 wickets at an average of 4,53 while Sune Wittmann emerged as the top batter with 167 runs at an average of 55,66 and a top score of 93 not out. The Walvis Bay born Hamunyela, only 18years-old, made a great impact, taking a wicket with her very first ball, and is one of the exciting talents that emerged at the tournament as she and Sune Wittmann, Adri Van der Merwe, Yasmeen Khan and Kayleen Green made the team of the tournament. Score in brief: Namibia 69/10 in 15.5 overs (Sylvia Shihepo 16*; Sarah Wetoto 6/16) lost to Kenya 72/3 in 11 overs (Margaret Ngoche 37*; Victoria Hamunyela 1/4) by seven wickets. The hosts Rwanda overcome the Nigerian challenge to finish third in Kwibuka 2021 on the back of performances Gisele Ishimwe and Cathia Uwamahoro with the bat and collective bowling effort went past Nigeria to win the third place. Rwanda 112/5 off 20 overs (Gisele Ishimwe 39, Cathia Uwamahoro 35*; Mary Desmond 1/17) beat Nigeria 104/6 off 20 overs (Kehinde Abdulquadri 31, Blessing Etim 25; Marie Bimenyimana 2/21) by 8 runs. - icc.com

Retired rugby player Daniel Bock who started as a teacher at Duinesig High School in Kuisemond in the beginning of 2021 has after some of the boys at the school approached him he established the rugby teams at the school. Mr Bock as a person who likes challenges, started immediately with about 40 under 15 and 19 boys that are eager to play rugby. Bock said "Everywhere you go there is talent and I know that some of the under 15 boys who was at my previous school, Narraville Primary school in Narraville do have the talent to play rugby." “The school management and many of the parents were not against the school to start a new sport code at the school. However, there are some parents who have their doubts,” Bock said. "Earlier this year, the school, with the help of FNB Kudus rugby club, held a successful coaching clinic with about 40 boys that are eager to play rugby" Bock added. Bock further said that as soon as the Covid-19 regulation for contact sport is lifted they will as a school play their ever first rugby game. The Principal of Duinesig High School Mr. Mr Stanley Uri-Khob said that he and the school management as well as the school board are happy with rugby as a sport at the school. Uri-Khob said, “To have rugby at school is a blessing as the school boasts with national Cricket, Netball and Soccer player. We might in the future also boast with national rugby players at school. The school principal, school management, rugby coach and players were recently surprised when community members turned up at the school with two sets of rugby jerseys for the school rugby teams. Rugby community members, Armando Calaca, Lloyd and JR Jacobs, Dylan Theron, Leon Barnes and Ms Casey cooper donated jerseys for the under 15 team whiles Dr. Natasha Tjongarero and Dr. Happy Musweu sponsored the jerseys for the under 19 team. We as the school would like to thank the sponsors and the rugby community for their generous donation.
