From the Editor’s Desk Attention towords the Poultry Industry of India The situation has deteriorated to the point where India has now transformed from a major producer to importer of chicken and chicken products, including eggs. In the face of all these difficulties, it is very encouraging to know that there are some local entreoreneurs who are still engaged in the poultry business with the view to rescuing it from total collapse. The tasks has, however, been very daunting, given the high rate of importation of cheap poultry products, making it difficult for local poultry farmers to compete favorable. Over the years, poultry farmers have had cause to raise concern over their predicament but it appears nothing has been done to address their worries. It is for this reason that the Poultry Planner appeals to the government and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in particular to intervene and salvage the poultry industry from its present challenges. We urge the government to provide incentive packages for poultry farmers, such as support for those who import poultry feed and other inputs, so that those items can be obtained at affordable

prices. Even under the dictates of a free market enterprise, it is imperative for the government to control the importation of cheap poultry products through appropriate tariff regimes qith the view to protecting operators in the local poultry industry and making them more competitive. We also encourage commercial banks to give favorable responese to the

funding of the poultry industry by devising innovative products to meet the needs of poultry farmers. The compelling need for such interventions to restore the vibrancy of the poultry industry is the prospect of creating thousands of jobs for the youth in the country, which will also help realize the government’s dream of reducing the rate of unemployment. Our poultry

industry has suffered neglect for far too long and it is time to rescue ut from total collapse and male it vibrant once again. Besides the business opportunities that the industry will create, a vibrant poultry sector will help improve the protein needs of the people, especially children. The Poultry Planner therefore, appeals to the authorities to put in place the necessary interventions to attracts more investment to the poultry sector

EFFICIENT UTILIZATION OF DEAD POULTRY BIRDS (about 8000 Kg of carcass) available per day for disposal. As such, this huge quantity of dead birds, unless disposed of properly pose a catastrophic threat to the environment and may result in major health hazards to human as well as l i ve s to c k i n t h e w a ke of Dead poultry birds emerging diseases. Among the d i f f e re n t b i o - s e c u re a n d The Indian poultry farming scenario has sanitary disposal methods, rendering is shown an unprecedented an excellent way to recycle a transformation among all other animal troublesome waste material (dead husbandry sectors into a fast growing birds) into a good feed ingredient. (BAHS, 2016) The Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu has 1001 poultry farms having a stocking density ranging from 50,000 to 7, 00000 birds per farm (Ananth, 2011). The overall daily mortality rates in these farms were recorded as 0.03 per cent (Sivakumar, 2006). The normal mortality (due to physical causes) in these farms account for about 6000 dead birds

Conversion of RCO into biodiesel may open new vistas for generating wealth from waste for poultry farmer besides c o n t ro l l i n g t h e m a j o r h a vo c of environmental pollution caused by the unscientiďŹ c disposal of dead carcass. birds for the production of biodiesel. (John, 2012) Nutrient composition of poultry carcass meal Bohnertet al. (1996) and Lapiere and Lobley (2001) reported that broiler meat meal has 57.45% RUP. This level was related to the thermal treatment with steam which removed moisture, allowed lipids extraction, and increased RUP. Kulkarni et al. (2006) reported that the poultry carcass meal had a proximate composition of 8.5% moisture, 60.9% crude protein, 0.54% crude ďŹ bre, 10% ether extract, 0.71% sand and silica, 13.16% total ash, 0.53% salt, 3.63% calcium and 2.15% phosphorous. Rajendra Kumar (2009) studied the proximate composition of spent hen meal and reported that the moisture, crude protein, ether extract, phosphorous, calcium, total ash and NFE were 8.9, 62.24, 10.91, 0.74, 12.05, 3.54, 1.58 and 14.07% respectively. HARDWARE DISEASE – A SERIOUS HEALTH RISK IN BACKYARD POULTRY Hardware disease is a less frequently discussed health risk in backyard poultry. In real sense hardware disease is not a disease but rather a serious health complication that can result in poultr y birds by accidentally consuming screws, nails, staples, hooks, bits of wire, pieces of glass or any other metal pieces found in yard as poultry is attracted to shiny things they find on the ground. This is extremely dangerous and can lead to serious health problems as sharp edges causes perforation of internal organs, leading to infection. It can take days or weeks for symptoms to emerge, and by that time it's generally too late Now keeping in view the digestive tract of chicken, gizzard (also known as the muscular stomach or ventriculus) made of strong muscles that grinds the food even the stones and pebble but when nail or other hardware enter the gizzard it can cause severe lacerations and damages the gizzard leading to septicemia and infections. It is very hard to treat, but it is easily preventable.

Early symptoms may include:Ÿ

Decreased appetite

Ÿ

Dehydration

Ÿ

Vomiting

Ÿ

Weight loss

But more or less we can say that there are not much peculiar signs of this disease. Chicken simply DIES. As with many things, prevention is far easier than trying to treat this affliction, so it's important to be aware of these simple ways to prevent ingestion of foreign objects Preventing Hardware Disease Ø

hardware still attached in the yard where poultry is kept. Ø

Make sure the bedding of poultry is free from all kind of metal pieces, as they are frequently found in baled straw and hay.

Ø

When using hardware in the poultry yard, pick up all the fallen nails, screws, staples, bits of wire, pieces of glass etc.

But again, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so be super vigilant about keeping your backyard poultry and the area free of metal debris. CURCUMOL – PURE AND FORTIFIED TURMERIC OIL, A FUNCTIONAL FEED ADDITIVE FOR POULTRY NUTRITION Introduction For many decades the practice of dietary use of Antibiotics as a growth promoter in commercial poultry production has been followed. Antibiotic supplementation in poultry diet reduces morbidity and mortality; increase feed efficiency and growth performance of Broiler chickens. Opportunistic pathogens present in the gut/intestinal tract tend to reduce the growth rate of poultry. Antibiotics, also commonly referred to as Antimicrobial Growth Promoters(AGP) act directly on the pathogenic intestinal bacteria and can get accumulated in the bird's tissues which will ultimately pass on to humans through the food chain resulting in breakdown of the immune system (Bacterial resistance). Hence the use of Antibiotics is banned in many countries especially in the EU as a feed additive since January 2006, which has seriously taken a toll on the poultry industry. Since then many other nations have followed suit. The need of the hour for the Poultry industry is to find more and more alternatives to AGP's in order to stem the effects on infection. These alternatives are required to be GRAS for both animals and humans, environment friendly and applicable in the diet. Turmeric and its extracts thereof have been found to be an effective alternative to AGP'S in poultry production. Composition Of Turmeric

69.4% Carbohydrates and 13.1% Moisture (Chattopadahyay et al. 2004). It has both oil part as well as coloring pigment part. The coloring material is a rich source of the phenolic compounds, Curcumin (Roughley & Whiting 1973), Bis demethoxy curcumin(BDMC) and demethoxy curcumin(DMC),collectively referred to as Curcuminoids which act as powerful antioxidants and a colorless m e t a b o l i t e n a m e l y Te t r a h y d ro curcumin(THC)(Huang et al . 1995). The active substances in Curcumol are Curcuminoids (Toennesen 1992), Aromatic turmerones and alpha and beta turmerones (Ferreira et al .1992) and curlone (Kiso et al. 1983). Curcuminoids, as found in Curcumol has a wide spectrum of biological activities including antioxidant, antibacterial , antifungal , antiprotozoal , antiviral, anticoccidial and antiinflammatory properties. The oil part also exhibits antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammator y properties (Chandra & Gupta, 1972). Table 1: Proximate analysis data of Turmeric oil

Growth performance of Broilers Numerous studies have been published advocating the beneficial effects of Turmeric s u p p l e m e n t a t i o n o n g ro w t h performance of broiler chickens. A recent trial concluded in a major integration in India showed 5 points improvement in FCR over control when administered 500 ml per ton of Curcumol.

Egg production and quality in Layers There is much evidence to show that dietary supplementation with turmeric stimulated egg production of laying hens. Regular usage of Curcumol in commercial layers in ambient temperatures in the brooding and growing stages have shown lower mor tality, improved feed intake and better immunological parameters. In other studies, Radwan et al .2008 provided evidence that supplementation of layer diet with turmeric increased egg production, weight, mass and at higher dose increased the yolk weight and yolk index. Studies also revealed that turmeric supplementation improved the site of calcium deposition in the uterus and increased shell weight and thickness. Health status of Broilers Turmeric supplementation has beneficial effects on the blood physiology in Broiler chickens. Zhongze et al.2008 carried out Fat metabolism studies in Arbor Acres broiler chickens and concluded that dietary supplementation of turmeric stimulated the production of Serum HDL, thereby reducing the total cholesterol , LDL and VLDL concentrations in serum. Al Sultan (2003) repor ted a significant improvement in both erythrocyte and leukocyte concentrations when the diet of broiler chicken was supplemented with Turmeric. Gowda et al .2009 showed that d i e t a r y s u p p l e m e n t a t i o n of 22mg/Kg curcuminoids from Turmeric ameliorated the adverse effects of Aflatoxin B1 on serum chemistry in terms of total protein, albumin and γ – Glutamyl transferase activity. Turmeric contains active compounds that beneficially stimulate bile secretion and bile flow which can support health of the liver. Emadi & Kermanshahi (2007) studied the supplementation of Turmeric in diets reduced the concentrations of Alkaline phosphatase(ALP) , Alanine aminotransferase(AST) and Lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) in the blood of broiler chickens. Reduction of these enzymes is important as the accumulation of these enzymes in the liver are related to toxicity. Curcumin has also been reported to be able to

Response of Broiler chickens due to turmeric dietary supplementation on Immunomodulatory system has been evaluated in some studies. Kurkure et al .2000 reported that dietary supplementation of 0.5 g/Kg Turmeric ameliorated the harmful effect of Aflatoxin B1 on the body’s immune system , showing the humoral immune stimulatory potential in poultry. Results in mycotoxicosis study by Sawale et al.2009 showed that turmeric ameliorated the deleterious effects of Ochratoxin A on haematobiochemical and body immune system of layers. Lee at al (2010) demonstrated the Immunomodulatory properties of Turmeric against parasitic infection. Serum antibody level against a microneme protein 2 from Eimeria tenella (EtMIC2) was significantly higher in birds fed diets supplemented with turmeric. EtMIC2 is an apical complex protein which plays an important role in host cell invasion of Eimeria parasites. It has a putative function in parasite adhesion to the host cell and plays an important role in inhibiting sporozoite invasion of host cells.

Yarru et al (2009) showed that 5.0 g/Kg turmeric meal supplementation had beneficial effects on the stimulation of genes involved in antioxidant function (CYP450) and immune function (IL-6 & IL-2). Carcass traits of Broilers Dietar y supplementation with turmeric may have beneficial effects on the carcass traits of Broiler chickens as it contains beneficial phytochemicals like Curcumin, ArTurmerones and curlone. D i e t a r y s u p p l e m e n t a t i o n of curcumin meal at the rate of 0.35 g/Kg reduced the abdominal fat, subcutaneous fat thickness and liver fatness of male Wanjiang Yellow chickens (Zhongze et al.2008). Conclusion Ÿ

There exists sufficient evidence that Turmeric oil and its by – products thereof find application as natural feed supplements in poultr y production system due to its wide safety margin.

Ÿ

T h e e n h a n c e m e n t of g ro w t h per formance is attributed to improved enteric health status, digestive system, Immunomodulatory system, and nutrient and energy utilization.

Ÿ

An effective concentration of 500 ml/Ton Turmeric in oil supplementation provided the most optimized effects.

Ÿ

Future research should be focused on the determination of the mode of action as well as duration of application. Dr. Sekhar Basak Founder CEO Innovista Consulting, New Delhi, India

BUSTING MYTHS AND PROMOTING RESPONSIBLE USE OF ANTIBIOTICS IS CRITICAL FOR THE ANIMAL PROTEIN SECTOR As the World Antibiotic Awareness Week (13 – 19 Nov 2017) is celebrated, CLFMA calls for promoting awareness among all stakeholders in the animal protein sector about judicious and responsible use of antibiotics. India's animal protein sector is one of the major contributors to the nation's overall economic growth and most importantly in alleviating poverty and malnutrition. Serving as the foundation of rural India's prosperity, it provides employment to a few hundred million farmers mainly smallholders and protects their livelihoods. India's livestock industry is on a strong upward trajectory posting strong growth in the last few decades and is recognized as one of the most promising globally. Looking ahead, next five to ten years are extremely critical for the sector to maintain its growth and strengthen its competitiveness. Antibiotics are used in animal agribusiness for many decades and are essential for maintaining the health, hygiene and welfare of the animals both in the industrialized and backyard scenarios. Recently, we are witnessing increasing concerns on the use of antibiotics in livestock farming globally.

As WHO describes, antibiotics are precious tools for the veterinarians for prevention, control and treatment of diseases in animals and also for p ro m o t i n g g ro w t h . W h e n u s e d responsibly and judiciously, Antibiotics contribute enormously to produce sufficient quantities of safe, quality, nutritious and affordable food. While genuine concerns about misuse, overuse and subsequently, resistance issues are understandable, several myths, opinions and unfounded claims undermine the critical role of antibiotics in the broader context of global food and nutrition security. In today's world that is seamlessly connected through social media and other communication channels, it is indeed much easier to evoke negative publicityon anything. F u r t h e r, r e g u l a t o r y a n d p o l i c y decisionsnow a days, are increasingly getting influenced by public perception.Hence, besides busting myths, sharing correct information about the benefits of using antibiotics promoting awareness are the needs of the hour in India and globally. As the apex association representing India's animal agribusiness sector, CLFMA acknowledges this is not just an issue of usage of Antibiotics per se but

one that has much larger implications in terms of animal productivity; costs of food production; incomes; profits; and ultimately livelihoods of the farming community. CLFMA is actively encouraging and advising its members to focus on cascading correct knowledge and information about proper use of antibiotics. In the longtermperspective, CLFMA reiterates that it is critical to promote awareness among farmers, veterinarians and other industr y stakeholders besides effectively regulating the availability and quality of Antibiotic products available in the marketplace using existing rules and regulations. CLFMA is working closely with diverse stakeholders across the value chain including government authorities, giving top priority to the ultimate economic and social consequences of any policy and regulatory move on people's health, nutrition and welfare. When the country is experiencing “protein inflation”, the necessity to prevent food prices from rising must be the top priority as at least two hundred million Indians still cannot afford three square meals a day.
