Preface Rapid medical innovation and a better standard of living means people are living longer and healthier lives. This has resulted in a dramatic increase in the population of people over the age of 60, especially in the developed nations such as Japan. It has been estimated that by 2100, or in another 84 years those over the age of 60 in Europe and North America will be 25 percent of the total population. The Pacific Islands region would have 20 percent over the age of 60, 17 percent in Asia and Latin America and 6 percent in Africa. (Source: World Population Aging Report 2015: Department of Economic and Social Affairs Population Division, United Nations, New York).
It is often found that quite a number from this age group choose to reside overseas, many for a long period, with some even buying a second (or third) home in their favourite overseas destination. This has resulted in the boom of long-stay tourism and hospitality services created to support these groups. The Lampang Governor’s Office, assigned by the Upper Northern Provincial Cluster 1 - Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Lamphun and Lampang - created the book “Home away from Home: Long stayer’s Guide to Chiang Mai – Lamphun – Lampang – Mae Hong Son” to promote the readiness of the Upper North in supporting the long-stay market. The book has been translated into Thai, English, Japanese and Chinese.
Baby boomers contribute a large number to the older population, or those born post World War II (1946-1964). The next age group are the X Generation, or those born between 1965 and 1979. Both groups have generally been quite successful, with careers, good family relationships, excellent financial stability with great purchasing power and a willingness to pay for convenience.
The Lampang Governor’s Office, and the Upper Northern Provincial Cluster 1 region wish you an easy, pleasant and welcoming stay in your “Home away from Home” in the Upper North of Thailand.

Introduction The beginnings of the long-stayer’s journey The journey of one who looks overseas to live usually begins after a lifetime of the mundane day – to – day routines of work and life; you seek something new, something different, something to bring happiness and interest back to your life. So you turn to travel to refresh your mind and recharge your energy before returning to the regular life at home, with a better frame of mind and much happier. Apart from getting your mind ready for moving to another destination, there are also other things you need to consider to make your trip enjoyable.
Location You should pick a destination and location that suits your interest and your style of living. While some prefer an urban lifestyle with convenience and many interesting activities, others are attracted to the peace of the countryside. Some are looking for a large living space while others are happy with something small and easy to maintain with all the facilities they need under one roof. 8

Nature and Culture For those living in the city, something new and surprising can happen on a regular basis, especially a city with diverse nature and culture. Cultural surprises and learning opportunities can make living in the city interesting and different.
Cost of Living
Medical Backup
Cost of living depends on you; some want a luxurious lifestyle, eating out at fine restaurants, while others seek a simpler life and enjoy sampling local cuisine in small restaurants. Cost of living will be determined on what helps you to sustain a comfortable lifestyle in that city so it is necessary to determine what kind of lifestyle you would like to lead when considering costs in each city.
Health care is essential. You should consider destinations with top-quality medical and health care facilities if you have health conditions or are simply concerned about your health in the long run. Choose the destination that has easy access to health care facilities to give you peace of mind.
Quality of Living
Safety
Once you have a list of the destinations where the cost of living is affordable (or even favourable) another factor that needs to be considered is the quality of life. Because different individuals have different lifestyles, the definition of good quality of life tends to differ. You need to decide whether you like shopping, spas, golfing and expensive dining, or if you prefer nature, adventurous activity, yoga etc. Once you know what you are looking for, review your list of possible destinations and choose the location where the available features suit your lifestyle.
Safety and security is a concern for everyone, a person should feel confidence in their safety both of their home and themselves. In addition to the friendliness of the locals review the safety and security of the city you are considering.

Visa If you are planning to travel to another country, make sure you learn about the visa requirements of that country before you go. Often these countries will require that you make visa arrangements before you go.
To be eligible for the visa application, the applicant must: • •
Thailand offers two options for those wishing to retire here, the first option is the Non-Immigrant O-A visa which must be applied for in your home country at the Thai Embassy or Consulate. You need to show a balance of not less than 800,000 baht using the Bank of Thailand’s current exchange rate or a certified income of not less than 65,000 Baht, or a combination of a deposit account plus a monthly income totaling not less than 800,000 Baht a year. (When submitting the bank statement, a letter from the bank verifying the account and balance is to be presented). When applying for the Non O-A overseas you will also need to provide police verification stating you have no criminal record and a medical certificate as required by the Ministry. This visa can then be extended in Thailand Another option is to apply for a Non-O visa overseas and then once in Thailand you can deposit the 800,000 baht in a Thai bank (in your name only) and then in three months apply for an extension based on retirement. This extension can be done on an annual basis and has the same income or bank requirements as the Non O-A but the money must be in a Thai bank.

(An English version of additional information can be found at http://www.mfa. go.th/main/en/home ) Once you have considered all of these factors let’s consider information about each of the four destinations in the Home Away From Home Longstay Guide; the fascinating cities in the upper North of Thailand of Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang and Mae Hong Son. You may find it hard to choose as each has much to offer the longstayer.
These requirements are made to ensure that the visa applicants are able to live in Thailand without financial problems since they are not allowed to work with this visa type. 11

Chiang Mai
City’s Attraction TEMPLES Chiang Mai was the center of the Lanna Kingdom and holds strong Buddhist traditions with the people of Chiang Mai honoring Buddhist rituals and faith. The strong presence of that belief resulted in the many temples that dot the city and the province; built by those intending to create good merit and serve the people. Chiang Mai city or Muang as it is called in Thai, is home to 120 temples with the Sripoom Sub-district having the most at 22 temples or Wats. Chiang Mai is host to some famous temples, including royally sponsored ones
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
Wat Chedi Luang
This temple is the symbol of Chiang Mai City is set on the mountain overlooking the city and is considered the spiritual heart of Chiang Mai. The temple was built King Keu Naone in 1929 B.E. or 1383 and is one of the must-see destinations in Chiang Mai with its stunning views and 306 step staircase flanked by Naga serpents.
This temple has a large pagoda in the heart of the old city. The word “Luang” comes from the Northern language and simply means “big”, here referring to the size of the pagoda. It is believed the temple was built between 1928 – 1945 B.E. or 1382 – 1402 AD.

Wat Jed Yod This is the only temple in Chiang Mai with the characteristics of the Buddha Gaya Pagoda in India. Wat Jed Yod was built in the Phrajao Tilokkarat Era in 2020 B.E. (1447 AD) and there the Holy Buddhist Scriptures were catalogued for the first time in Thailand in this temple. Wat Suan Dok and Phrajao Kaotue Wat Suan Dok is a Royal temple built on a former Royal Park by King Phaya Kue Na in 1914 B.E. (1371 AD) and houses one half of a sacred Buddhist relic, the other half resides in Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Wat Phrajao Kaotue was built in the Phra Muang Kaew Era in 2047 B.E. (1504 AD). Originally, Wat Suandok and Wat Phrajao Kaotue were in separate premises but later on they were combined in the same area. The main attraction is the Ka King Buddha Statue, which is a bronze Buddhist statue in the Chiang Saen style modeled after the figure of King Phraya Kue Na.
Wat U-Mong (Buddha Park) This temple was built in the Phraya Mungrai Era and was named Wat Velukuktharam at that time. The name was changed after the King invited a famed monk, Maha Thera Chan to stay at the temple, and a tunnel was built in the North of the temple’s pagoda. The King also renovated Wat Velukuktharam and named the tunnel Maha Thera Chan, or “Wat U-Mong” today. 15

Living the organic lifestyle in a historic town City Background Lamphun, famed for its longan fruit orchards, was built 1,343 years ago in the era of Queen Chamadevi of Lavo Kingdom. She was regarded as the first monarch of the Haripunchai Kingdom and the city has been included as part of the Lanna Kingdom in the Phaya Yi Ba, the city lost to King Mangrai. Lamphun was abandoned after the Burmese captured it and remained so until the era of King Kawila who drove off the Burmese in 1774 and then peopled it with Lue people from Yong city in Burma. Today, the population of Lamphun is largely of Lue origin from Yong.
Estate I and II; surrounding the estates are staff residents from many different places. Close to the city there are department stores, convenience stores, golf courses, but the city of Lamphun itself is calm and easy going. Due to the commercial longan orchards in the past years there has been an increasing awareness of the adverse health effects from chemical farming. Now, there is a shift to organic farming and support for sustainable agriculture i.e. avoidance of single plantation. Lamphun is a city that promotes organic agriculture and food safety. Living standards in Lamphun are good and relaxing. A healthy body surely comes from healthy, yet safe, consumption.
Lamphun province is the smallest province in the Northern region. In the area near Chiang Mai, there is a large area for industrial estates; which are Regional Industrial

City’s Attraction
Hariphunchai Kingdom of the past was glorious from when Queen Chamadevi built the city. She led various artisans and monks from the kingdom of Lavo to build the city. After building Haripunchai, she sent her son to build the Khelangnakorn City or now Lampang Province. In the era of King Artitaraj, the city was the glory of the empire and at its height. Wat Phra That Haripunchai was built and there was strong growth in arts and religion. This history gives the city it’s unique old charm with many fascinating old temples.
Phrathat Haripunchai Woramahawihan Temple This ancient temple is as old as the city itself and a cornerstone of Lamphun as the most important temple in Lamphun. With time, over many generations, the key characteristics of the Chedi were transformed as changes were made from generation to generation. Originally it was assumed that the angular pagoda was built in the reign of King Artitaraj. Later King Mengrai modified it to be in a spherical pagoda shape and so in the later generations, the pagoda had been modified from time to time until it became the existing Lanna style as seen today. Inside, there is a Buddha hair relic. Another interesting part is the Lotus Pagoda: the pagoda shape was influenced by Mon – India art, with the same pagoda at Ku Kut pagoda at Chamadevi temple.
Chamadevi Temple This is another temple that should not be missed, it was built in the era of Queen Chamadevi. It was said that Chamadevi brought technicians from Lopburi to build the city and the temples and Wat Chamadevi is one. She built Chedi Suwan Django, also known as Ku Kut because the peak of it is now gone. The temple is in the Haripunchai style; another pagoda is Rattana Chedi, which has an octagonal top that resembles Pala art of India. It is believed to have been around the same time as the Ku Kut Pagoda. 26

NATURE Doi Khun Tan National Park Doi Khun Tan National Park is located within Hangchat and Muang district in Lamphun, and Mae Ta district in Lampang. The National Park covers 159,556 rai (about 63,000 acres) and is mainly mountainous with tropical rainforest. The must-visit attraction in the national park is the Khun Tan tunnel, the longest train tunnel in Thailand (1,352 meters), built by a German engineer, Emil Eisenhofer. The top of the highest mountain in Khun Tan National Park is covered with beautiful pine trees and is the location of the vacation house of Mom Rajawongse (M.R.) Kukrit Pramoj, the 13th Prime Minister of Thailand and famed Thai author.
Ban Tha Pa Pao This community won an eco-tourism award in 2008 because of the community’s efforts in reforestation. In the past, the area had been heavily deforested but due to community education and efforts the forest area has been returned to its former abundance rich in biodiversity. There is also a homestay available for those interested in learning firsthand about His Majesty King Rama 9’s Sufficiency Economy model. Call 0 5300 6222 for more information. Ta Chompoo Bridge The Ta Chompoo Bridge, or the Pink Painted Bridge or Kao Bridge is a railway bridge that crosses the river. It was built in 1919 by General Prince Burachatchaiyakorn, Kromphra Kamphaengpetch Akrayothin; he was the engineer who supervised the project. Ta Chompoo Bridge is still used to this day and the view from there reflects the beauty of the natural surroundings.
Kua Mung Ta Singh Kua Mung Ta Singh; In Thai the word “Kua” means a bridge, and “Kua Mung” means a bridge with thatched roofing. Kua Mung Ta Singh is the Kuang River Bridge connecting the Haripunchai temple to the Wiang Yong community, a Tai Lue community that migrated to Lamphun generations ago. Inside the bridge, there are traditional craft products. 27

Slow life in a Timeless City City Background Lampang is famous for its horse drawn carriages, it was once known as Khelang Nakorn city and is located in the plains of the Wang River. The whole area is shaped like a pan an an area of 12,534 square kilometers. Lampang is the first ancient city to build a kingdom contemporary with the Hariphunchai Kingdom. It has been estimated to have been built sometime presumably built around the early 14th B.E. by the son of Queen Chamadevi, Pra Anantayot, the twin of Pra Mhantayot, the successor of Haripunchai from Queen Chamadevi. Later Khelang Nakorn was added to the Lanna kingdom in the 19th century B.E.
considered the commercial center for the trade and many merchants became wealthy and and built large luxurious houses. This recent past gives Lampang many beautiful old colonial-style buildings. The government focuses on improving the quality of life in terms of education, health, and infrastructure; to promote economic self-sufficiency and conserve the environment with management principles of good governance. The sustainable city of Lampang is going to be “The City of Joy That Will Not Change Through Time. The city will always present the picture of aesthetic simplicity, peace, and lovely people. This makes Lampang one of the most attractive cities in the North and one that must be visited to visit the timeless Lanna period.
Lampang is a beautiful and peaceful city which, in the past relied on the Wang river as a major trade route with foreigners, including Chinese, Burmese, and Khmer coming to work in the wood trade. It was

City’s Attraction
Because of its 1,300 years of history, Lampang has invaluable historic sites and artifacts. Uniquely Lampang, one must take a horse and carriage ride around the city to visit the many landmarks and beautiful old homes. Horse carriages started 80 years ago, during the period when Chao Boonyawatwongmanit was the ruler of Lampang, during the reign of King Rama 5. As trade and transportation
needs grew people found themselves using horses and carts for transportation. As transportation systems developed and modernized the horse carriages fell out of favor everywhere except Lampang which still uses them today. A very popular mode of transportation, the horse carriage offers the visitor a unique and fun way of exploring Lampang city.
Wat Phra That Lampang Luang This is the most important temple in Lampang, with magnificent Buddhist architecture in Lanna style and a layout according to the universal principle; an ancient arch in front which leads to the Grand Chapel; inside there is a statue of Phrajao Lantong. Wat Pong Sanuk
Talat Jeen or the Chinese Market (Kad Kong Ta)
This temple is located in Wiang Nuea district. Historians believe that Wat Pong Sanuk used to be central to Lampang and also the former location of the main City Pillar of Lampang before it was moved to its current location. This temple was awarded the Award of Merit from UNESCO 2008.
This is an ancient trade community in Lampang, situated along the Wang river. In the past, people from all over the Northern region lived peacefully; the Tai Lue from Chiang San, Burmese, the Khmer, as well as the British and Chinese, they all came for the logging trade. Before the train arrived in Lampang, the people traded using the river, floating logs and boats along to market. The Chinese Market has a port in Wang river. The Kad Kong Ta has been preserved so that future generations may see this old way of life.
Wat Pra Chedhi Sao Lung, The word “Sao” means twenty in the Northern language and “Lung” is the unit word for pagodas. So, Sao Lung means the temple with 20 Pagodas. From evidence from the findings of artifacts from the Hariphunchai era at the pagoda, it is believed that the temple was built over a thousand years ago. Inside the temple, the Buddha statue was built with the Lanna style mixed with the Burmese style. It is believed that if anyone counts all 20 pagodas, they will have good merit. This temple is located in Ton Thonchai district.

Urban Lifestyle
Lampang was the second choice as the center for the prosperity of the Upper Northern region under the National Economic and Social Development Plan No. 1 from 1961-1966. The first regional university was established in Lampang and various government offices, e.g. the Public Relation Office region 3, Television Channel 11 of the Provincial Police Department Region 3, and the Bank of
Thailand, which the regional bank branch was opened at Lampang for the first time. However, when Chiang Mai University was established later, the drive towards progress was directed to Chiang Mai instead. Lampang still has a railway station, a domestic airport, and a shopping center in the city of Lampang, which still makes it very place suitable for convenient living.
COFFEE SHOPS - RESTAURANTS - BARS Chinese immigrants have settled in Lampang for hundreds of years. Apart from trading along the Wang river, there was also lumber trade to other cities and foreigners from other countries with which to trade. The Chinese remained as the most significant group of foreigners to settle in Lampang in its logging heyday. This means that some of the city’s signature dishes you find there are, somehow, related to Chinese cuisine. Chinese noodles, fish noodles, chicken rice, egg noodles, and soup porridge are examples of the popular dishes in Lampang. The second most popular cuisine is Northern food. Breakfast for Lampang people is mostly boiled chicken rice, porridge, and pork blood soup. As for lunch, rice and egg noodles are easy to find around city. Noodles are particularly famous for tourists, especially the giant fish ball noodles. Now, Lampang has a new generation and foreigners that fled from the chaos to live in this small and peaceful city. They have opened beautiful restaurants and cafes downtown, so it is easy to while away an afternoon as there are always places to go. 40

City Background Known as “The City of Three Mists, Mae Hong Son has the highest number of mountains in a city in Thailand. These geographical conditions mean that Mae Hong Son can have high temperatures during the day but rapidly cooling at night creating fog and giving the city its name. Artifacts from the Paleolithic Period have been found in Mae Hong Son showing it was habited by men thousands of years ago. The city has great cultural diversity due to the migrations of different ethnic groups including the Shan, Karen, Lahu, Lisu, Lua, Hmong, Padong, and Haw Chinese in the past. These groups carried their own culture with them to the city when they migrated, causing the present culture and architecture in Mae Hong Son to be very different from other Northern cities.
