As the weather starts to feel breezier and (ever so slightly) cooler this month, there’s no better time to soak in the beauty of our Southwest Florida landscape. But as we relish what nature has to offer, it’s also vital to be part of the solution for a healthier planet—and that’s exactly what this issue of Natural Awakenings is about. As October welcomes in a change of seasons, let’s each take up our role to protect the climate, so we can all contin ue enjoying it. Join us as we dive into the following practical and accessible tips for an eco-conscious lifestyle!

Let’s jump right in with this month’s feature article on “Sustainable Sanctuaries: Supporting Human and Planetary Health at Home.” When our homes became shelters to protect ourselves and our families from the global pandemic, many of us learned how to reconfigure our spaces to create room for work, school, fitness, hobbies and other uses. Now that spirit of resourcefulness and renewal is driving us to think about how we can transform our homes into sanctuaries of environmental sustainability. Just a few simple, efficient strategies this article covers include sourcing local materials for renovations, caulking windows and insulating walls, using furniture made from all-natural or recycled elements, landscaping with native plants, and eliminating household cleaners with artificial or harmful Sustainabilitychemicals.canalso develop in the kitchen, and one of the easiest ways to practice this is with seasonal eating. Fall is the perfect time of year to find colorful, nutritious, flavorful produce like the ruby-red beet, which just so happens to be the star of our “Conscious Eating” article. This versatile root vegetable can be savored raw, roasted, boiled or even pickled. Finely slice it to make wholesome beet chips. Puree it into a comforting autumn soup. Shred it to incorporate texture in a salad. Juice it for a morning smoothie. Or even use it to create a healthier version of your favorite dessert. For more inspiration, this article also features some beet-centric recipes such as Beet, Greens and Goat Cheese Lin guine; Beet Chips with Sea Salt and Smoked Paprika; Beet Hummus; and Kale, Beet Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette.

Finally, now that another school year is back in full-swing, it’s time to empower our children to start thinking about their role in environmental protection and conservation as well. And this couldn’t be easier—instilling a love and respect for the outdoors begins with play. In this month’s “Healthy Kids” article, we explore how transforming concrete urban spaces into green parks and playgrounds creates a fun area for kids, as well as a safe, natural ecosystem for birds, insects or other local wildlife. This also facilitates an educational opportunity for kids to learn how to mindfully interact with the environment by sharing it with native plants and animals. The earlier these valuable lessons are taught, the more likely this next generation will be to care about our planet and join the fight to keep it healthy.

As you dive into this month’s issue, be on the lookout for our crossword puzzle clues as well. We’ve scattered them throughout each article, and the answers will be available to check on NASRQ. com. Biofeedback Evaluation and the Human Voice: Why Should We Care?

are one such method. However, for some conditions, this procedure can take a long time to deliver results, point out underlying causes and offer conclusive information on how to move forward with treatment.

At times, finding answers can even require seeing a host of different specialists before a true diagnosis is presented, or ef fective, harmless protocols are made avail able. Another route to map out imbalances, chronic or acute issues, and root causes of illness would be to receive a comprehensive biofeedback evaluation.

It might also surprise you to learn that recording, scanning and evaluating the human voice can offer valuable insights into the overall health of the human body. Our voices are like our blood in that voices carry data and frequencies which, with the help of computers, can be interpreted to create an accurate image of the entire human system. With these scanning tools, we learn information about organs systems, toxicities, nutritional deficiencies, infec tions, emotional and spiritual codes, chakra and aura balances, meridian blocks, chiro practic issues, allergies and so much more.

A biofeedback evaluation can help you connect the dots to find life-saving an swers. If you have questions, contact Beata Molnar who operates the Healing Room in Sarasota. She offers a comprehensive voice scan, energy healing, PEMF, red light therapy, Rife frequency applications with plasma, sound healing and bio magnetic therapy. She will also offer a before-and-af ter energy scan in all of her sessions.

Location: Healing Room, Aaron Ct., Sarasota. For more information, call 941-586-9539 or visit Facebook.com/CreateBalanceAndHealing.

Professional Supplement Center: Brain Support Is Right Around the Corner

All of us could use some help with memory, focus and mental sharpness at some point or another. In the past, it was believed that nothing could be done to boost cognitive performance, maintain overall brain health, and support mental recall and focus. However, as modern science reveals, this assumption is false.

According to neurologist, Dale, Bredesen, MD, “Life style, sleep, exercise, brain games, nutrition—a number of factors contribute to the overall health of your brain, and an even greater number of fac tors can lead you down the path of cognitive decline. But you don’t have to simply accept it as a symptom of age. Supporting your brain today—and every day—with good habits and a smart supplementation routine can keep you mentally sharp. No matter your family history, DNA, or previous neurological issues, there is hope.”

Dr. Dale Bredesen has teamed up with LifeSeasons to create NeuroQ, an all-natural supplement solution for enhancing cognitive performance and protecting your long-term brain health. NeuroQ is formulated to help maintain optimal brain function, clear think ing, memory, and normal inflammation response.

The Professional Supplement Center offers NeuroQ, as well as several other high-qual ity cognitive supporting supplements from brands such as Neuroscience, Orth-Molecular, Douglas Labs, Pure Encapsulations, Xymogen and Thorne Research, to name a few.

Perfect Treat! Heal Your Pets with Crystal Sound Bowl & Reiki Therapy

Animals

can benefit greatly from Sound Bowl Healing Therapy.

Many pets have anxiety, fear of staying alone, panic attacks and abandonment issues - especially rescued animals. They also absorb their owner’s stress and negative energies. Clearing Pets’ chakras is very important according to certified Sound Bowl Healer & Reiki Master Gaëlle Wizenberg of Objects of Magic. They are very receptive to the high frequencies, and great results are seen. Pets are quite at ease, close their eyes and rest during the treatment. A 15-minute session biweekly is recommended to get started. Many clients have never thought about this therapy for their loved pets, but we are trying to create more awareness.

Once your pet is used to the process you can even buy your own bowls and do it regularly for them in the comfort of your home. Many pets have cysts or tumors, and the release of blockage can help reduce and ease the buildup. Reiki also eases the pain of older pets who have arthritis and other discomforts. BreastPreventingCancer FACT OR FICTION?

When it comes to breast cancer aware ness, some of the online literature out there can be disempowering. For instance, it’s often reported that significant risk factors for breast cancer are out of a person’s control. Fallacies and misinfor mation can prevent life-saving action. In reality, there are several measures you can take to protect your health.

Dense breasts, atypical hyperplasia, lobular neoplasia (LCIS), age of menarche or puberty, and age of menopause are just a few of the risk factors commonly thought to be out of your control. However, there is significant published evidence to the contrary. These risks are responsive to modifiable solutions, all of which are absolutely within your own control. To give a basic example, an increased consumption of alcohol, refined sugars, red meat and

artificial preservatives is known to escalate the risk of breast cancer. Therefore, to take preventive measures, simply eat healthier foods, while lowering your alcohol intake.

It’s also a smart idea to consume foods that help bolster your metabolic function. Some of these include olive oil (preferably, high-flavone unfiltered varieties); oily fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel; vege tables and fruits; and soy, which does not cause cancer like the internet might have led you to Estrogenassume.ismetabolized in the body from several different substances. One of these substances, called 4-hydroxy estrone, is potentially carcinogenic. However, phy tochemicals from certain plants can reduce the production of this chemical. Some also help neutralize the chemical if it’s in the system. A few examples of these support ive phytonutrients include pterostilbene (methyl-resveratrol from grapes and wine); sulforaphane (from broccoli and brassicas); epigallocatechin gallate (from green tea); quercetin (from red onions and apples); and curcumin (from turmeric). Eating the rainbow daily is the best cancer prevention.

A high-quality supplement is the next best approach. Doing both for will offer extra protection. Visit the Healthy Steps Store for a wide selection of high-quality supplements like OmegAvail Hi-Po fish oil. This supplement has the enzyme Lipase, which helps to ensure optimal digestion. It also does not have a fishy aftertaste.

Understanding Differences between Thermography & Mammograms

Octoberis Breast Cancer Awareness month, but instead of thinking about cancer, why not think about how to have healthy breasts? Women are encouraged to get a mammogram so they can find their breast cancer as early as possible, but instead of early detec tion, being proactive and identi fying risk factors allows plans to be put into action to improve the health of the breast and even re verse developing pathology. This is prevention—not just early detection.

Mammograms image the structure of the breast and thermography images the physiology (e.g., an X-ray of the heart shows its size and location in the chest whereas an EKG shows the function of the heart). Thermography “shows” the function of the breasts and how healthy they are. Mammograms are after the fact—they can only see what is already there. They can identify a mass, if it is large enough, but cannot distinguish the difference between a benign lump and a cancerous tumor.

A tumor must be fed by blood vessels and that vascular formation starts many years before the tumor begins to grow. The vascular feed produces heat which can be seen with thermal imaging. This is an indication that either the body is preparing to produce a cancerous tumor or the mass that is present is most likely cancerous.

There is a large margin between healthy breasts and breast cancer and it’s helpful to know where one falls within that spectrum. There are many factors that can contribute to unhealthy breasts, including dense and fibrocystic breasts, calcifications, lymph

congestion, inflammation, thyroid dysfunc tion, hormone imbalances and more, which can contribute to dis-ease and a possible unfavorable diagnosis down the road.

Thermography tells how healthy the breasts are instead of just screening for breast cancer. It also has the potential to truly detect breast cell anomalies long before mammog

results of the changes made.

There are many things to do to avoid breast cancer, and knowing the risk factors is at the top of the list. With proper risk assessment which includes different testing modalities, the patient is able to determine her risk factors and develop an action plan on how to improve the breast tissue and/ or even reverse any existing developments. raphy can detect cancer. This allows one to implement lifestyle changes that can improve the health of the breasts proactively instead of waiting for a cancer diagnosis later.

It's important to know what's hap pening in order to make positive changes to increase breast health. Thermography is an excellent tool for one’s self and one’s healthcare practitioner to help identify specific challenges and then monitor the

Healing Hip Pain

Hip pain can be debilitating. The hip joint is close to our center of gravity and becomes involved in almost any body movement we make. Moreover, a painful hip often becomes tight and restricted which can lead to arthritis. This means that successful treatment of hip pain is crucial, not just for immediate pain relief, but for long-term health and integrity of the joint. The reasons behind hip pain can be complex, so I will take you through the evaluation and treatment of a real patient to offer insight into my process of helping to heal this difficult problem.

A patient, whom I will refer to as Mary, came to my office complaining of difficult pain in her left hip that caused a limp and limited her ability to perform dai ly activities. Over the previous six months, she had difficulty lifting her leg, and was also not sleeping well. Pain in the hip often woke her anytime she shifted on her side in bed. She had fallen on that hip two years prior after slipping on a wet floor, but had only experienced pain for about two weeks. She had not thought about it again until I asked her about injuries to the area.

A thorough examination was next. In addition to the typical examination of range-of-motion, muscle tone and strength and tenderness, there are three specific issues I look for when evaluating hip prob

lems. These include fascia restrictions af fecting the hip muscles, fascia restrictions of the hip joint and nearby joints, and degen erative changes in the hip that can be found through x-ray or MRI. All of these played a role in identifying the causes of Mary’s pain, as well as successfully treating it.

Fascia Restrictions

The hip joint’s mobility is made possible by several different muscles, both large and small. These muscles obtain their structural toughness from a fibrous connective tissue called fascia which can become restricted from injury or repetitive stress. In this case, Mary’s fall had caused stiffening of fascia in specific muscles.

On examination, two of her large hip muscles (gluteus maximus and psoas) and one smaller muscle (pectineus) showed restriction of the fascia. As a result, her gluteal muscle was weak, and the psoas and pectineus muscles were abnormally tight. This muscle imbalance, in turn, created in stability in the hip, causing repetitive stress to the joint tissues.

I mentioned earlier that nearby joints can be a problem, and in Mary’s case, there was also restriction of the fascia at the front of her left sacroiliac joint which limited motion in that joint. This most likely happened at the time of her fall. When a joint is restricted,

other nearby joints often are also affected, and in her case, the restriction created a slight twist of her pelvic posture that resulted in further misalignment of the hip joint.

Arthritis

Arthritis and degenerative change are always possibilities when significant hip pain presents. Mary’s pain had persisted for several months, and she had consulted with an orthopedist who ordered an MRI. The images showed a small bone spur and mild loss of joint cartilage in the left hip joint. The orthopedist had prescribed physical therapy which is often a helpful alleviation for hip pain. However, in her case, because of the fascia restrictions, physical therapy had only further aggravated the problem.

Overall, there were numerous factors contributing to Mary’s pain. At the top of this list of concerns was the bone spur be cause this is a relatively permanent change. The question in a situation like this is whether it’s the bone spur causing pain, or if it is something else entirely. To find the answer, I performed a simple test.

As a part of her examination, I took Mary’s hip through its range-of-motion to see which directions of movement were painful. Her most intense pain occurred with a combined flexion and rotation outward (lifting her thigh forward and outward). I then retested this same motion while holding pressure at points of fascia restriction. This pressure makes the re stricted fascia temporarily relax. Her rangeof-motion and comfort increased which suggested that her pain was at least in part due to the restrictions, not just the spur.

In the end, Mary’s main hip issues were driven by restrictions in her fascia. After a series of treatments to release the tight connective tissue, her left sacroiliac joint returned to normal motion. Her hip muscles regained normal tone and strength, and her hip could move freely again with just mild discomfort at the far end of its range-of-motion.

This mild discomfort was probably due to the bone spur, but it was not prohibitive for her daily life. I find it is typical that arthritic changes such as spurs and joint

18 Sarasota/Manatee Edition www.nasrq.com

narrowing can cause mild discomfort or stiffness, but these are not usually the main sources of pain.

Mary’s case is typical of hip pain. An additional type of hip prob lem that I also treat involves pain after hip surgery. This was not a consideration with Mary, but I see it often in my office. Sometimes the scar tissue from incisions made during surgery can distort and restrict fascia, resulting in painful motion and weight-bearing in the affected

this type of problem is easily treated with gentle fascia release in the area of the scar tissue. In general, I find that treating fascia restrictions is incredibly helpful to resolve all kinds of hip pain issues. Even in the occasional case of severe arthritis that requires surgery, treating fascia problems can restore function to improve rehabilitation after surgery.

Making sure all joints and muscles in the area are functioning correctly allows for a smoother recovery. Mary did not require surgery and returned to all her normal activities, including a two-mile daily walk without pain. This type of success is common, and I recommend fascia therapy as a conservative treatment of first choice for hip pain.

Natural Solutions to Prevent and OsteoporosisReverse

Nearly one in two women and one in four men over age 50 will suffer a fracture due to osteoporosis at some point in their lifetime. 24 percent of both men and women over age 45 who fracture a hip due to osteoporosis will, on average, die within 12 months of their injury. That’s a serious statistic. Across the globe, osteopo rosis causes more than 8.9 million fractures annually, resulting in an osteoporotic-relat ed fracture every three seconds.

As with all chronic diseases, osteopo rosis takes years to develop, often without significant symptoms. Therefore, the most effective treatment approach, should focus on early, preventive lifestyle and nutritional strategies, rather than late-stage medical interventions. In this article, I will discuss what osteoporosis is, how it develops, and how we can prevent—or even reverse—this devastating bone disease.

The word osteoporosis literally means “porous bone.” It occurs when the bones become increasingly porous due to a decrease in the quality or density of bones, making them more prone to fracture. From the time we are born, through our mid-20s, our bones continually build and strengthen until they reach their maximum density or peak mass between ages 25 and 30.

After this point, our bones undergo a process of remodeling, which involves a synergy of building new bone and removal of old bone. When the breakdown of bone occurs at a more rapid rate than the build ing bone, osteopenia (early osteoporosis), and eventually osteoporosis, occurs. An osteoporosis diagnosis will result from a DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan, which measures the density of bone.

This scan is scored based on the amount of deviation away from the T-score that a healthy young adult would be given.

A T-score between -2.5 and -1.0 indicates osteopenia, and a T-score of -2.5 or lower

indicates osteoporosis. This test is static, meaning that it takes a snap shot measure ment of the density of bone, but it fails to inform if or how the bones are abnormally remodeling (either building too slowly or breaking down too quickly).

The other limitation to this DEXA scan is that it is performed every one to two years, meaning the response a per son could have to any given prescribed treatment is withheld for a 12–24-month period of time. This can result in delaying a crucial change to treatment protocol if the follow-up DEXA scan fails to improve—or worsens. As a result, the person will miss out on valuable time to halt, slow down or reverse bone loss.

The positive news is that a simple blood or urine test can assess the rate at which bones break down, a process known as resorption. This test is the N-telopeptide (NTx) test, which provides a dynamic mea surement of what actually occurs inside the bone at any given time by measuring the by-products of bone breakdown. The real benefit to this test is it can be re-run every three to six months to assess the patient’s response to treatment, allowing for any ad justments to be made, as necessary, aiding in a quicker recovery.

As I discussed earlier, we have a limited opportunity during our youth and young adulthood to build our bone reserves and make contributions to our healthy “bone bank” before our peak bone mass is reached. This is why we should start preventing osteoporosis early in life through intentional lifestyle and nutrition al strategies to achieve maximum bone strength by our mid- to late-20s, so we can maintain optimal bone density as we age.

The most effective way to build healthy bone and minimize breakdown at any age is to follow an ant-inflammatory diet. Starting in childhood, a diet high in sugary foods

or beverages, as well as processed carbohy drates, depletes the body of bone-building nutrients like calcium, magnesium, chromi um and copper. Soda consumption includes an extra note of caution, as it contains high levels of phosphoric acid, which removes vital calcium from our bones.

Other inflammatory foods to eliminate include vegetable and seed oils, like canola, corn, soybean, peanut, cottonseed, sun flower and safflower oils, found in nearly all snack foods, salad dressings and condi ments. These foods are too high in omega-6 oils, causing an increased rate of bone loss. It’s also important to avoid farm raised fish. Instead, look for wild caught, cold water fish that’s low in mercury such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and herring, which increase essential omega-3 oils to improve bone mass. Increase consumption of whole, nutrient-dense, organic, pasture-raised, local food, if possible.

Other causes to poor bone health starting in childhood include a lack of exercise and a lack of sunshine, causing a deficiency in Vitamin D, needed to build strong bones. As we age, our risk for osteo porosis increases, especially in post-meno pausal women. A woman’s bone mass can decrease by 10 percent in the first year of menopause due to the drop in sex hor mones. Risk factors—especially for women of this age group—include medications like corticosteroids, antidepressants, and ant acids including Nexium, Omeprazole and Prilosec, which cause a depletion in bone building

Exposurenutrients.totoxins in herbicides, pesticides, plastics, and household or personal products, will rob us of many nutrients we need to build bone, in order to be detoxified from the body. Unmanaged stress and chronic sleep deprivation are also bone nutrient-robbing lifestyle factors, common among post-menopausal wom en. Inadequate intake of the essential and synergistic nutrients required for optimal bone remodeling become an even more important factor contributing to bone loss after

Let’smenopause.lookatsome of the treatment options available. Classic medications to treat osteoporosis are called bisphospho nates like Fosamax and Boniva. These drugs work by slowing the breakdown of bone, but they also decrease the formation

20 Sarasota/Manatee Edition www.nasrq.com

of healthy new bone. This can cause the bones to appear denser on future DEXA scans, but they leave the bones more brittle, in creasing the likelihood of fractures in the future. Bisphosphonates can also interfere with the absorption of essential nutrients like calcium. However, there are many natural, effective strategies to promote the healthy remodeling of our bones at any age.

In addition to eating an anti-inflammatory diet, taking a hydrochloric acid supplement with one or two of your largest meals will help improve the absorption of bone-building minerals. Most of us think we have too much acid produced in our stomachs when, in fact, as we age, our natural production of hydrochloric acid decreases. This can cause indigestion, heart burn, GERD and poor nutrient absorption.

There are many nutrients other than calcium required to build healthy bones such as magnesium, phosphorus, Vitamins D3, K2, C, B12, Boron, Silica and Glutathione. As I have mentioned, many of them are depleted due to poor diets, lifestyle, medications, stress and toxins. In order to identify deficiencies, test—don’t guess.

A blood test might be adequate to identify inflammato ry markers like Vitamin D, CRP(hs), SED rate, Homocysteine, HgA1c, Insulin and Ferritin, but will fall short in identifying the levels of key nutrients needed for optimal bone remodeling. A Spectracell test measures, not only the levels of micronutrients, but also how vitamins and minerals work in the body to determine if the levels supply what the body actually needs.

Another beneficial test would be to run an Omega Check. This will give you a ratio of omega-6 and your omega-3 levels to identify excess inflammation, which will show you which changes

to make in your diet or supplementation needs. Hormone levels, including estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and DHEA, should also be tested, as these hormones play an important role in bone health and optimal function of both the heart and brain.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of weight-bearing exercise to help build new bone. Weight-bearing exercise that puts a load on the bones is essential. The greater the load, the stronger the bones. This is why a lifetime of consistent exercise is so import ant for optimal bone health. Exercise should start out gently based on your current health and bone mass, then gradually increase over time. If you are new to exercise, ask your doctor before start ing and consider hiring a trainer to make sure you do the exercises safely. Finally, when choosing supplements to improve health and bone mass, avoid those with artificial colors, binders, fillers, and nutrients that are not bioavailable or poorly absorbed. Look for supplements in a reputable health food store rather than a drug, grocery or department store. This is not a purchase to be cheap with—especially if you have been diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis already.

Osteoporosis is a serious health issue, increasing worldwide but not given as much attention as it needs, in my opinion. The best defense

SUSTAINABLE SANCTUARIES

SUPPORTING HUMAN AND PLANETARY HEALTH AT HOME

Nothing underscored the im portance of a comfortable and versatile sanctuary quite like the pandemic. Stuck at home isolating, many families reconfigured their living arrangements to accommodate expand ing uses for work, schooling, cooking, entertainment and more. Today, that spirit of renewal lingers, prompting steady and robust activity in the con struction and interior design industries.

A house is literally our shelter from the storm, made more critical as we increas ingly encounter extreme and unprecedent ed weather events due to climate change. When we upgrade, remodel, build or buy new cocoons for our families, the time is ripe to incorporate elements that preserve and promote the health of humans and the planet.

Inspiring Goals

Lindsay Baker, CEO of the International Living Future Institute (ILFI), is part of a growing community of industry profes sionals trying to figure out how to de

sign, build and operate structures in more environmentally sustainable, socially im pactful and healthy ways. “We ask what would it look like if a building were to give back more to the world than it took,” she explains. “We’re a resource-consumptive industry with a large carbon footprint. Forty percent of global carbon emissions are caused by the energy required to construct and operate buildings. We also use lots of materials that pose negative impacts on people’s health—products known to contain carcinogens or cause respiratory problems—and people spend 90 percent of their time indoors, so everything we’re exposed to indoors has a huge impact on ourThehealth.”ILFILiving

Building Challenge sets bold aspirational goals, and buildings around the world have proven that it is possible to hit these benchmarks. “The energy imperative is that the building produces more energy than it consumes, and that happens by generating renewable energy like solar power onsite and using very little energy,” Baker asserts. “For wa ter, we ask that everyone return the water that goes through the building cleaner than it entered, which means people need to treat water onsite and use a lot less of it. You can do that with composting toilets, as well as grey water systems and rainwater recapture strategies.”

Baker is proud of ILFI’s ambitious goals. “If you decide to do a renovation to save 5 or 10 percent of your water or energy consumption, it will feel good to get there, but what we’ve found is that when you set a really exciting target for yourself, the

22 Sarasota/Manatee Edition www.nasrq.com

whole process is more fun and you get further with similar amounts of effort and money, because you’re thinking about systems differently, questioning assumptions about what a home might be capable of doing and employing a different level of creativity. At the end of the day, it can lead to a much more beautiful, more efficient building.”

Energy Conservation

Energy conservation is job number one for Jennifer Languell, founder and pres ident of Trifecta Construction Solutions, in Babcock Ranch, Florida. “An inex pensive but impactful upgrade is adding insulation. If you’re in an existing house, add insulation on top of what you already have. If you’re new construc tion, beef it up. You also want to address unwanted points of air infiltration using gaskets, weather stripping and caulking around exterior doors and windows. Over time, these items can shrink or get damaged, and may need to be replaced to seal the house and minimize air drafts,” she says. “You want to improve efficiency first, which costs much less than transitioning to renewable ener gy. And when you do transition, you only have to buy smaller quantities of photovoltaic panels to offset your power generation.”According to Languell, windows are climate-specific and can be modified by adding or subtracting panes, coat ings and treatments. “In Montana, I want the heat from the sun coming into my house, but in Florida, I don’t,” she says. “Natural light is great, but there’s a balance between your glass-to-wall ratio. In Florida, you would never have a skylight, but up north you’d consider it. And at this point, everyone should be transitioning to LED lighting, which will save money and energy.”

Water Preservation

As waterways dry up and areas around the world become more drought-prone,

water conservation becomes an increas ingly important imperative. The simplest modifications are low-flow shower heads, toilets and faucets, which cost the same as traditional-flow fixtures, as well as a visit from the plumber to fix any leaks. Minimizing or eliminating turf grass and planting drought-toler ant, native vegetation outside will also significantly cut water use, Languell suggests.“Greywater and rainwater collection systems are gaining momentum, and these systems for home use have come leaps and bounds from where they were 10 years ago,” she says. “They can take water from your laundry or show er, treat it, and use it to flush toilets, for example—a huge benefit for the West Coast and a huge water savings, because you’re using your water twice before you dispose of it.”

Eco-Responsible Materials

With regard to building materials and

products, the annual ILFI Red List calls out chemicals with negative human health impacts that shouldn’t be used in buildings, such as bisphenol A, chlo rofluorocarbons, formaldehyde, flame retardants, phthalates, toxic heavy metals and volatile organic compounds (VOC). Its Declare label is like a nu trition sticker that details what is in a building product, whether it is free of Red List chemicals and what its carbon footprint

“Consumersis. should demand trans parency; they should know what is in the products put in their homes,” Baker says. “One of the rules of thumb I like to apply is to ask, ‘How far is this mate rial removed from nature?’ Wood is one of the better materials from an ecolog ical and health standpoint. Fake wood flooring that is meant to look like wood but in fact isn’t—not so much. A lot of what we’re supporting is about getting back to the basics, removing chemicals and using brick, wood and clay.”

23October 2022

According to Languell, the more dura ble and local a material is, the better for the environment. “I’d never say no to a metal or concrete roof that lasts 50 years versus shingles with a 15-year cycle. Although bamboo is rapidly renewable, most of it comes from China, so the greenhouse gases associated with the transportation makes it less environmen tally friendly. Local materials are ideal. The closer the better. Get granite from Georgia, instead of Italy.”

When it comes to human health, home décor and cleaning products are equally as important as the construction materials, Languell advises. “Many times we’ll build a healthy and efficient home and then people put all sorts of fabrics and chemicals in there that are off-gas sing because they’re not thinking about the health of the indoor environment.”

Sustainable and HealthyFurnishings

“There’s good, better and best quality fur niture,” says Robin Wilson, a New York City eco-designer and founder of Robin Wilson Home. “Good might use inex pensive wood or heavy-duty cardboards that look great, but if you sit on the arm of the sofa, it caves in. Better might have a less expensive wood, but it’s solid frame construction. The best is a very good wood and solid frame construction

made for heirloom quality. There are costs associated with each level, and I recommend spending the most budget you have on a quality product, because that sofa, if it’s made well and it’s styled in a classic design, can be recovered over and over again; therefore, you’ re being eco-friendly to the world because it’s not going into a landfill.”

Her favorite materials for furnishings are sustainably forested or reclaimed wood, long-lasting metals like steel and aluminum, fast-growing bamboo and recycled or reclaimed plastics. She’s also a proponent of vintage pieces. “With all furniture, if it can be salvaged, salvage it. Healthwise, make sure the materials are hyper-washed to protect you from allergens. Old glazes or paints might have lead in them, so take vintage furniture to a professional that uses the right safety equipment or go to YouTube University and make sure that you protect yourself with gear to rework the piece in a garage or outdoor space. Always choose nontoxic paints and stains with low to no VOCs.”

Biophilic Design

Baker is particularly excited about inte rior design innovations that reconnect us to nature, known as biophilic design. “Natural light is important, but also, lighting manufacturers are figuring out

how to produce lighting that feels like you ’re sitting outside in a forest while a cloud passes by or under a tree with dappled light. Mohawk and Interface offer low-carbon, healthy carpets that mimic natural forms like a rocky beach,” she says. “Fractals are often mentioned in biophilic design because they’re fascinating geometric composi tions in nature like fly wings and bark that have an inherent intelligence to them, and we’ve come to understand that these natural elements are not just interesting, they also have measurable positive impact on our psyche and mental health.”

Durability

“I rate durability over everything else. If you build it once and it doesn’t get destroyed by a natural disaster, you’re going to generate less waste and use fewer resources,” Languell says. “Durability might mean fireproofing in California, windproofing in Florida and floodproofing in Louisiana. It also means futureproofing your home, espe cially if you’re building new. Anticipate technologies that are coming. Even if you can’t afford photovoltaic panels now, for a couple of bucks, you can run electric conduit from your panel up to your roof so if ever you decide to buy them, it’s not a major overhaul of your house. Dual-pipe your house and have the pipes ready to tie in rainwater or grey water, even if it’s not financially viable right now. Wire your house for a 220-volt plug in your garage so every one that has an electric vehicle can charge it overnight.”

Inviting in the Wild

Amidst the whirlwind of our daily busyness, Mother Nature goes about her own affairs, conjur ing everyday miracles from the humble trinity of tangled roots, dark soil and sunlight. On our way to our next task, we might catch snippets of afternoon gold blur past in a window, but we may long for more time to accept October’s invitation of long shadows.

Having an indoor haven touched with nature’s balm takes the edge off the work-at-home days, the can’t-catch-abreath days and the won’t-stop-raining days. Bringing a bit of the outside in helps us to remember the big picture. The 12th-century mystic and healer Hildegard of Bingen called the energy of the Earth veriditas, or greenness, and it is easy to tap into this life force by aligning our senses with the rhythms of nature.Beauty is an often forgotten necessity, but can gently lead us back on track when we place a vase of fresh flowers, pine branches or wild rose hips on a windowsill. Designating one wall in the house for a photographic tapestry

core serenity. The dance of each season is brief, but tuning into their wealth can make our own dance a bit more magical.

The Joy of Movement

DANCING BOOSTS OUR HEALTH AND HAPPINESS

Whether it’s salsa, hip-hop, belly dance or ballet, finding our groove has proven to ease depres sion, support the cardiovascular system and improve overall joint function. By all accounts, dancing gives us a step toward better health, but equally as notewor thy is its potential to bring more fun into our lives. Contrary to popular opinion, dancing is not just for kids, and special ability is not necessary. “You are never too old, and there is no such thing as two left feet, but we can also argue: When you have great instructors teach ing you, you can learn anything as a beginner,” says Monique Maldonado, marketing director of the Latin Rhythms Academy of Dance and Performance, in Chicago.

Brainy Benefits

Stepping into a dance studio can help us enrich our lives while sharpening cognitive function. After participat ing in an eight-month dance program during which they memorized intricate steps of the merengue, salsa and samba, Spanish-speaking, middle-aged and older adults had significant improvement in working memory scores, reported Uni versity of Illinois Chicago researchers in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience. “Just like working out and puzzles, dancing works out brain paths and keeps them active and healthy,” says Maldonado.Tangolovers will be pleased to know that the passionate dance style has been shown in a 2017 study published in Complementa ry Therapies in Medicine to lower anxiety and stress levels more effectively than mindfulness meditation.

cruise ship passengers, mostly in their 60s and 70s, how to navigate the dance floor. “We teach all the main dance genres, including ballroom and Latin American, salsa and mambo, along with modern jive,” says the Southport, England-based, lifelong dancer who teaches with his wife, Jan. “For those not as agile as they would like to be, I would suggest starting with ballroom, social foxtrot and waltz, then progress to Latin American, cha-cha and rumba.”

At age 75, he partially attributes his basal metabolic rate of 60—common in men 15 years his junior—to his love of dancing, which “can burn up to 385 calories per hour with salsa or 400 calories per hour with swing,” he notes.

Joan Price, a contemporary line dance instructor in Sebastopol, California, also attests to the longevity-pro moting perks of moving joyfully. “At 78, line dancing keeps me physically fit, mentally alert and happy to be alive. The older we get, the more we need social ac tivity, physical movement and mental stimulation. You get all three at once with line dancing.”

The form has long outgrown its coun try-western music roots and now offers something for everyone, including Latin, swing, contemporary pop and Broadway.

“Since you dance on your own in a row, line dancing is ideal for singles and for part ners of non-dancers. It’s also won derful for people who want a social activity that doesn’t involve dating or partner ing,” says Price. She says that there are thousands of different line dances, ranging from super-simple to extraor dinarily complex. “As a beginner,

be sure and choose a class that is beginning level,” she says. “Beginning level teaches basic steps, patterns and terminology—and the joy of dance!”

For those looking for a little more heat, Latin dance can accommodate any fitness level. “If you are looking for a fun, new hobby, any style is a fit, but if you are more interested in advancing your salsa skill level, trying mambo and cha-cha can be a nice challenge,” says Maldonado. “Sensual bachata is for those who want a little more spice and advanced body movement.”

Hallworth often sees people ap proaching dance with uncertainty and apprehension, and he encourages an open mind: “Dancing isn’t for everyone, but if you give it a chance, you will be well rewarded. Most people learning to dance are a friendly bunch and will helpFornewcomers.”Maldonado, it is also about shared experience, which she feels is one of the most beautiful aspects of Latin dance: “It’s a great, diverse group of people who can change your out look on life. Being a part of any dance community can truly be life-changing.”

Nadine Clopton on Advancing Regenerative Organic Agriculture to Health Care

the movement to promote a better, natu ral and more responsible way of modern farming by conducting research into the cultivation of healthy, living soils. Today, Nadine Clopton is advancing its related efforts through regenerative health care.

Clopton has been an NGO youth representative to the United Nations for more than six years, was the first young person to serve as a director on the board, and is now serving as an elected vice president of the Global NGO Exec utive Committee. In her role as program manager with Rodale Institute, Clopton combines her loves of health, advocacy and the ecosystem. Learning about food as medicine was transformative in her own health journey with chronic illness es, and she hopes that others are also able to experience the transformative sense of well-being and connection that comes through such a lifestyle practice.

How do we better connect our farming, food and healthcare systems?

The best thing we can do is take those three things out of a silo and look at them as part of a complex, interconnect ed web. In Rodale Institute’s “farm to hospital” model with St. Luke’s Hospital, we have a working farm at the hospital and much of the produce grown there ends up on the patient’s plates, in the cafeteria or in a CSA [community-sup ported agriculture] share that the hospi tal employees can take home. At Rodale Institute, we’re hoping to build that bridge between agriculture and health care, and invite doctors and farmers to be part of the cycle of health care: think ing about the health of our soil and the health and the nutrient density of what’s on our plates.

What is next in your plans for the future of regenerative health care?

During the last century, the rise of chemical-based agriculture has severely changed the way food is produced, and we have failed to recognize its unintended consequences. Research has revealed that if we contin ue on this path, our soil will give out and we will be unable to feed our children and grandchildren within the next 60 years. Thankfully, there is still time and positive transformation is possible through regenerative organic agriculture, which has its roots in Indigenous, tradi tional, ecological knowledge.

For more than 70 years, the Rodale Institute has been on the leading edge of

What does the regenerative health care movement mean for both human health and agriculture?

Regenerative health care carries potent “medicine” for a lot of the things that are ailing us in this country: the epi demic of chronic illnesses, the climate crisis, global food insecurity and eco logical health. We believe that healing our soil is a prerequisite for healing ourselves. Regenerative health care draws the link between agriculture and health care because we need those two systems to talk with one another, and the answers are right beneath our feet.

The heart and soul of what I’m working on right now centers around connect ing health care and agriculture with Rodale Institute’s first-ever Regenerative Healthcare Conference. We’re invit ing doctors, nurses, RDs [registered dietician], nutritionists and others with interests in health and well-being to the farm for four days to get their hands in the soil and learn about how soil health is directly correlated to human health and how food is medicine.

We’re working closely with Dr. Scott Stoll’s team at The Plantrician Project and bringing together some incredible luminaries like Dr. Uma Naidoo, Dr. Maya Shetreat, Dr. Rupa Marya, Dr. Michelle Perro, Dr. Mark Hyman, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and others. To our knowledge, this is the first-ever medi cal conference to be taking place on a living, breathing, working farm. We’re passionate about the idea of getting doctors out of their practices and letting them get their hands in the soil. There’s no better way to learn about the real

28 Sarasota/Manatee Edition www.nasrq.com
wise words

fundamental difference between conventional and regenera tive organic agriculture than by picking up a scoop of soil in our conventional model and picking up a scoop of soil in our regenerative organic model.

Healing our planet begins with healing ourselves and how we relate to the planet and to one another, so through these tangible, in-person experiences, we can get even closer to that ultimate goal of a healed system.

What are some tips for consumers and practitioners to help this movement?

Get to know a farmer! Go get your hands in the soil, talk to your local farmers and start to rebuild that web of connection and relationship. Look around you and see how the Earth responds when we’re operating in a way that’s regenerative and allows natural systems to thrive. And for practitioners, get curious! Start breaking out of the siloed worldview of health and medicine and learn about the potent medicines that are all around us in our food and our soil.

WHY LESS IS MORE IN TOOTH REPAIR

view with dentist Blanche Grube in a naturopathic magazine about conservative dentistry that she made the connection. She bought Grube’s book, Chew on This But Don’t Swallow: A Must-Read Before Your Next Dental Visit, and read it from cover to cover. Grube drew upon 46 years of clinical obser vation, continuing education conferences and thousands of hours of study to analyze how the whole body functions and what part teeth play in overall health.

Says Lee, “I had a capped tooth with metal underneath. Once I got it removed, all the things connected to it resolved. My sinus issues, post-nasal drippage, coughing, and even my trigeminal neuralgia that I had for 10 years resolved.” Trigem inal neuralgia affects the nerves running from the face to the brain, causing electrical shock sensations to the jaw and face that can be triggered by stress or certain movements.

Whether

dentistry is described as being conserva tive, biological or biomimetic, the description that precedes such health care is extremely important. That 10- or 12-letter term signifies a specific type of dentistry that’s the best option for both our teeth and the rest of our bodies, as Ann Lee found out when the pieces to her dental puzzle fell together in just the right order.

Lee, a naturopathic doctor and licensed acupuncturist who owns the Health for Life Clinic, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, had been experiencing problems with her sinuses for years. She had been alerted to a potential problem with one of her teeth via a preventive tool known as medical infrared ther mograph screening. But it wasn’t until after she read an inter

Today, when Lee suspects a correlation between the phys ical problems a patient has with the amount of metal in their mouth such as fillings, crowns and permanent retainers, she relates their physical problems to metal oxidation and inflam mation that can manifest in numerous ways, and suggests that the patient read Grube’s book and consider any of the non-met al options now available.

Bernice Teplitsky, DDS, owner of Wrigleyville Dental, in Chicago, interprets biological dentistry as dealing with the whole person. “Both biological and conservative dentistry deal with biocompatible materials, making sure that each is right for the individual. Determining the compatibility of den tal materials is important for those who have existing allergies,

dentistry involves removing a minimum of healthy tooth structure during the restorative process. By conserving natural enamel and den tin, many of the complications caused by excessive tooth shaving and drilling are avoided. “Students who went to dental school 15 years ago weren’t taught biological, biomimetic or con servative dentistry, and they didn’t have the superior materials that we have to day,” says Teplitsky. “Unless they took

They also didn’t learn that what is going in the mouth with the teeth and gums relates to the overall condition of a person’s health.”

Reducing Radiation Risks

WAYS TO LESSEN ELECTROMAGNETIC EXPOSURE

We are tied to our devices, continually connected via phones, tablets and com puters, but this convenience comes at a cost. Many people are surprised to learn that our devices are constantly emitting electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and radiofrequency radiation (RF). According to the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, there is strong evidence of a correlation be tween these exposures and neurologi cal, cardiac and pulmonary disease, as well as reproductive disorders, immune dysfunction, cancer and other health conditions.

Constant Exposure

Our exposure to EMFs has dramatical ly increased over the past few years, especially in homes containing cord less phones, wireless routers and smart meters. Every electrical device emits an EMF, whether or not it’s turned on. This constant radiation can cause damage to cells, and even comes from applianc es such as refrigerators, microwaves,

washing machines and baby monitors. The closer a device is to a person, the more potent the charge. “EMFs cause VGCC’s [voltage-gated calcium chan nels] to swing open and allow excess calcium into the cell. This causes elevat ed oxidative stress, inflammation and ultimately, if not counteracted, disease,” says Mieke Jacobs, an EMF consultant and founder of Healthy House Chicago Jacobs, who does private house in spections in the Midwest, says that the rise of smart appliances and lighting in recent years has increased certain types of EMFs. “Dirty electricity consists of high-frequency voltage transients riding along the 60-Hertz electricity provided by the utility company. Many people are surprised to learn how prevalent it is in seemingly safer sources such as solar panels, compact fluorescent lights, dimmer switches and energy-efficient appliances,” she says.

Concerning Effects

As a certified electromagnetic radiation specialist and founder of EMF Healthy,

in Sedona, Arizona, Liz Menkes focuses on the radio frequency EMFs found in wireless devices and systems, alternat ing current (AC) electric and magnetic sources in wiring and appliances, and dirty electricity, all commonly found in homes. “EMFs have been linked to many symptoms and health condi tions, and there is evidence of cancer risk from all four types,” she says. “AC magnetic fields were classified as a pos sible human carcinogen in 2001 due to evidence of increased risk for childhood leukemia. Radio frequency was classi fied as a possible human carcinogen in 2011 due to evidence of increased risk for brain tumors. Plus, there are links to many other health conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.”

Symptoms from EMF exposure can manifest in many ways. “Early warning signs include difficulty sleeping, diffi culty concentrating, fatigue, headaches, irritability and anxiety. It is estimated about 30 percent of the population is moderately sensitive to EMFs, but have not connected the dots, since these are common symptoms that can be caused by many things. Other com mon symptoms can include tinnitus, skin rashes, dizziness, sharp stabbing pains, leg cramps, high blood pressure, nausea and hyperactivity, especially in children,” says Menkes. Less common symptoms include heart arrhythmias, unexplained nightmares and nosebleeds, as well as ADHD and food allergies in kids, adds Jacobs.

Reduce Exposure at Home

Tangible steps can be taken to lessen the risk. “The number one mistake people make is sleeping with their cell phones near the head of the bed. Leave it turned off in another room and get a battery-op erated alarm clock,” says Menkes. “Turn off Wi-Fi at night, since EMF radiation affects melatonin production. If possi ble, hardwire your laptops, tablets, cell phones and other devices to eliminate Wi-Fi completely in the house. If you must use a cell phone, keep it in air

green living
NorGal/AdobeStock.com

plane mode as much as possible and don’t store it in a pocket or otherwise close to the body.”

More in-depth interventions include electrical rewiring, as well as radio-frequency shielding that blocks EMFs with cop per or another absorbent material. “Replacing dimmer switch es helps, but not all electricians are aware of EMFs and have different priorities when upgrading a home,” says Jacobs.

The federal government has no restrictions on overall EMF exposure. “The wireless industry and the government agen cies that are supposed to regulate this industry want you to believe that the science is settled and wireless exposures are safe. Unfortunately, this message is not reality. EMF damage can manifest in myriad ways that include many condi tions and that are occurring in ever-increasing amounts,” says Lloyd Burrell, author of EMF Practical Guide and France-based founder of ElectricalSense.com.

The Building Biology Institute offers classes and resourc es to help create environments free of EMF hazards. “Any measure to reduce your exposure is worth taking, and will contribute to a healthier and more peaceful home environ ment,” says Menkes.

VERSATILE LEAF-TO-ROOT EATS

Versatile, nutritious, colorful and flavorful, beets are quite the package deal. This easy-to-grow, multi-season vegetable is packed with nutrition and plays well with other ingredients. Beets can be enjoyed raw, roasted, boiled or pickled. They can be blended into quick dips, thin-sliced for healthy chips or incorporated into desserts for a mild, sweet flavor and bold color.

“Beets have been a staple ingredient on our vegetarian menus for generations. They are an easy way to add natural sweetness and gorgeous color to so many dishes, both sa vory and sweet,” says Danica Wilcox, owner of the Moose wood Restaurant, in Ithaca, New York, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary next year. The quintessential vegetarian eatery’s go-to beet dishes include hummus, burgers and borscht.

“Beets boast so many health benefits. Being rich in folate, manganese and copper, they are good for heart, brain and bone health. They are also a good source of fiber, which will feed the good bacteria in your gut, leading to improved gut health,” says Candace Bell, a Phoenix-based holistic nutri tionist and food blogger at The Wheatless Kitchen. “Beets have a unique earthy flavor that goes perfectly with bright citrus. Roasting them brings out their sweet and savory fla vors, and they pair well with arugula, crunchy walnuts and tangy goat cheese in a salad.”

Lisa Keys, of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, author of the food blog Good Grief Cook, grows beets and uses them in a number of ways. “Beets get their color from natural plant pigments called betalains, which contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that help control illnesses like

diabetes and heart disease,” she says. Her blog offers a recipe for a hearty, roasted beet sandwich, which pairs the root veggie with feta and a smashed avocado, dill, lime and yogurt spread.

Versatility is one of the beet’s star qualities. The root veg etable can be quick-pickled with other garden vegetables, pureed into soup, roasted for a side dish, shredded raw into salads, juiced into a smoothie or even concentrated into a powder—a favorite of registered dietitian nutritionist Mascha Davis, in Los Angeles. “Beet powder can be added to so many recipes for a fast and easy superfood boost,” she says. Her go-to applications for beet powder include a beet and rose latte, a beet-colored “pink yogurt” topped with berries and cacao nibs, and overnight oats swirled with beet powder.

If the benefits of the beetroot didn’t already run deep enough, its stems and leaves are not only edible, but also packed with vitamins A, B and K, as well as copper, manga nese, iron and calcium. The greens make a great side dish to accompany a beetroot main dish or can be incorporated into a beet soup, salad, sandwich or smoothie for a ze ro-waste meal turbocharged with nutrients.

Like spinach, chard and other vegetables in the goosefoot family (Chenopodiaceae), beets are rich in oxalates which can contribute to kidney stones. For most healthy people, though, oxalates aren’t harmful, if enjoyed in moderation.

A Happy Halloween for Pets

NINE WAYS TO KEEP A DOG OR CAT SAFE

Halloween is celebrated on October 31, and as always on this fun holiday for humans, it’s important to take precautions to ensure furry family members wake up healthy, happy and safe on November 1. Here are some potential hazards to avoid.

CHOCOLATE: All chocolate is toxic to both cats and dogs, and the darker it is, the more toxic. It contains a caf feine-like stimulant that when ingested by a pet, can cause

seizures. Make sure all family mem bers and guests, including children, understand the importance of keeping chocolate away from the dog or cat.

SUGAR-FREE GOODIES CONTAINING XYLITOL: This is a popular sugar substi tute added to an increasing number of consumer products, including sug ar-free candy, gum, mints and baked goods. A small amount of xylitol can cause a rapid and dangerous blood sugar drop in dogs, as well as acute liver failure. Xylitol’s effect on cats is unknown, but keep it far away from the kitties, as well.

RAISINS AND TRAIL MIX: Instead of candy, some well-meaning people hand out tiny boxes of raisins or small bags of trail mix containing raisins and/or chocolate candy such as M&Ms. Un fortunately, raisins are toxic to dogs and cats, and can cause kidney failure even in very small amounts. Chocolate-cov ered raisins pose a double-barrelled risk.

CANDY WRAPPERS: Halloween candy isn’t the only health threat for dogscats.and

Empty candy wrappers smell like what was in them, enticing a pet. The ingestion of foil and cellophane wrappers can cause a life-threatening bowel obstruction. It’s very important to stress to children, in particular, the need to keep all candy wrappers out of the reach of pets.

CANDLES AND GLOW STICKS: Can dles, including the small ones inside Jack-o’-lanterns, are fire hazards. Make sure they are well beyond a pet’s reach, so that a kitty doesn’t wander across a table or shelf decorated with lit candles or a dog doesn’t get too frisky with a carved pumpkin with a candle inside. Glow sticks and jewelry have become very popular, and pets (especially cats) have been known to chew on them. The substance that creates the glow is phenol, which can leak out and burn a pet’s fur and tongue. Choking on small pieces is another hazard.

SCARY HUMAN COSTUMES: Some pets can become very fearful or aggres sive at the sight of certain Halloween costumes, including those that may re semble a dog or cat. In such instances, take precautions to keep both a pet and trick-or-treaters safe.

ELABORATE PET COSTUMES: Even if a pet isn’t costume-averse (many dogs and most cats are), make sure whatev er is put on her is lightweight to avoid overheating, doesn’t confine or restrain

their movement in any way and is free of any adornments they might be tempt ed to chew off and swallow. If they are frightened or annoyed by the puppy princess gown or the Grumpy Cat mask, be a pal and don’t force the issue. Let them enjoy the holiday, too.

TRICK-OR-TREATERS AND OTHER VISITORS: If lots of costumed kids or adults show up at the house on Hallow een, be aware that a constantly ringing doorbell, knocks and strangers at the door and a general mood of excitement can create an overstimulating envi ronment for a pet. Some pets become anxious, fearful and aggressive when their normally quiet, predictable evening is any thing but. If a pet tends to find commotion at the front door or visitors stressful, it’s best to secure them in a quiet, safe spot before the action starts.

OPEN DOORS: Animal shel ters and rescue organizations typically experience an increase in lost pets in the days following Halloween. Opening and closing the front door for trick-or-treaters, coupled with the event’s high level of excitement, can create an opportunity for a frightened or adventurous pet to run off. Make sure a pet’s ID tag and/or microchip database information, if applicable, are up to date and take precautions to prevent them from slip ping out the door and into the night. Common sense and a little prepara tion will ensure a four-legged family member is none the worse for wear the next morning.

Veterinarian Karen Shaw Becker has spent her career empowering animal guardians to make knowledgeable decisions to extend the life and improve well-being of their animals.

Hundreds of studies confirm copper kills viruses and bacteria almost instantly just by touch.

That’s why ancient Greeks and Egyptians used copper to purify water and heal wounds. They didn’t know about viruses and bacteria, but now we do.

“The antimicrobial activity of copper is well established.” National Institutes of Health.Scientists say copper’s high conductance disrupts the electrical balance in a microbe cell and destroys it in seconds.TheEPA recommended hospitals use copper for touch surfaces like faucets and doorknobs. This cut the spread of MRSA and other illnesses by over half, and saved lives.

The strong scientific evidence gave inventor Doug Cornell an idea. He made a smooth copper probe

with a tip to fit in the bottom of the nostril, where viruses collect.

He hasn’t had a cold in 10 years.

Users say:

“It works! I love it!”

“I can’t believe how good my nose feels.”

“Is it supposed to work that fast?”

“One of the best presents ever.”

“Sixteen flights, not a sniffle!”

“Cold sores gone!”

“It saved me last holidays. The kids all got sick, but not me.”

“I am shocked! My sinus cleared, no more headache, no more congestion.”

“Best sleep I’ve had in years!”

After his first success with it, he asked relatives and friends to try it. They all said it worked, so he patented CopperZap® and put it on the market.

Soon hundreds of people had tried it. 99% said copper worked if they used it right away at the first sign of germs, like a tickle in the nose or a scratchy throat.

The EPA says copper works just as well when tarnished.

Dr. Bill Keevil led one of the science teams. He placed millions of viruses on a copper surface. “They started to die literally as soon as they touched it.”
