A

s we kick summertime into high-gear with the onset of July, we need to be fueling our bodies with optimal nutrition for all those family vacations, outdoor activities and fun in the Florida sun! Keeping that in mind, this month’s issue of Natural Awakenings is all about the benefits of food as medicine for health, vitality and rooted living. So here’s a glimpse inside the wealth of information you’ll find packed into this issue! Our feature article for July is on “Farmers as Field Health Scientists” which delves into how local farming practices that focus on sustainable growing, organic and heirloom produce, and holistic pasture stewardship result in safer, tastier and more nutrient-dense foods. This idea of ethical farming can improve the American diet, support heathier lifestyles and even contribute to disease prevention. It’s incredible how much we can all benefit—as both a community and an entire culture—if we give more attention and intention to how our food is produced. Next on the docket, our “Conscious Eating” article focuses on how to combat the symptoms of inflammation with the defense of proper nutrition. Some of the most effective anti-inflammatory foods we should be eating on a regular basis include beets, ginger, coconut oil, tomatoes, bok choy, walnuts, green tea, black cod, wild salmon, sea buckthorn berry juice and leafy greens. A diet rich in vegetables and healthy fats is excellent for reducing the effects of chronic inflammation on the body—and even the brain too. We also need to talk about how our society tends to mask these symptoms of pain, discomfort and inflammation with prescribed drugs, instead of natural remedies, which has spiraled into an epidemic of opioid addictions. This crisis has spread across the country, and the Bradenton-Sarasota area has among the highest addiction rates in the state of Florida, making this issue personal for our community. But rather than depending on opioids to temporarily numb our health concerns, this month’s “Healing Ways” article suggests natural and holistic alternatives to harmful medication. Some of these options are yoga, acupuncture, mindfulness meditation, CBD oil, medical marijuana, drumming and sunshine—which is never in short supply here! Well, that’s a snapshot of all the inspiration you’ll find in our July issue. We love hearing your thoughts and feedback on the content we’re putting out each month, so please don’t hesitate to drop a line at Publisher@NASRQ.com. And here’s to another month of summer!

Introducing Quantum Potentials

Meet Sifu Michael Stults from Qi Revolution

Q

uantum Potentials is an intuitive alignment process developed by Sean Leonard of 360 Degree Wellness. Its purpose is to help coordinate the activities of both the conscious and subconscious aspects of the mind. The process itself is meant to reestablish coherence between the mental, emotional and physical aspects of the body. Functioning from a state of coherence, human beings are both more intuitive and creatively intelligent. From a place of internal equilibrium, people are capable of experiencing the best version of themselves. Quantum Potentials is designed to help people achieve this state. The assessment process utilizes both the intuitive and physical senses. Each assessment represents a snapshot of the crossroads confronting people in the present moment. The system itself is designed to offer both affirmation of what is already subconsciously realized, as well as strategic advice on how best to relate to the challenges ahead. This system offers one other dynamic advantage too—it integrates seamlessly with Alchemy Qigong techniques for a significantly more substantial and grounded experience of this work. Quantum Potentials is a unique system for identifying goals, then finding the energy to see them reached. For the month of July, 360 Degree Wellness is offering $25 off Personal Quantum Potentials Assessments when you mention this article.

Healthy Body, Healthy Brain, Healthy Life

S

ummer is here. Many of you are getting ready for camps, vacations and other seasonal activities. But what are you doing for your—and your family’s—health? Aside from exercise, relaxation and healthy eating, is there anything else? Have you tried neurofeedback? Neurofeedback can benefit everyone, guiding the brain to a more balanced emotional state and improving cognitive efficiency. Based on our own experience and recent studies, we understand that neurofeedback can help increase attention and working memory performance, reduce anxiety or depression, and help alleviate symptoms of ADHD. Other applications can include personal development, peak performance, athletic control or inner awareness. Neurofeedback quantifies and trains brain activity. Brain cells interact creating thoughts, sensations, actions and emotions, detectable as brain waves. Neurofeedback specifically monitors brain waves, looks for irregularities, then produces a signal designed to correct and guide brain waves back into a healthy pattern. Overtime, the brain will remain in healthy ranges on its own. We utilize neurofeedback programs customized to you, to overcome issues and experience long-lasting results. Neurofeedback focuses on building new neural pathways and strengthening the brain rather than masking symptoms. Neurofeedback can be effective on its own, but continued research has shown that, when combined with traditional therapies, exercise, proper nutrition and adequate sleep, the outcomes are typically superior. Neurofeedback is not a quick-fix, but a drug-free and natural approach to help improve mood, concentration, and overall functioning. For more information, call 941-552-4500 or visit our website BrainwaveSarasota.com. Ask about our Summer Brain Mapping Specials.

White Sands Dentistry Implements Holistic Changes

O

ver the past year, White Sands Dentistry has successfully transitioned to holistic and biological dental care. This change culminated through many years of research on toxic procedures and materials related to the dental industry. This toxicity has been found as the root cause of numerous conditions and diseases. We have made many notable changes here at White Sands Dentistry. First, we removed fluoride from all of our products. Scientific evidence shows that fluoride is a carcinogen, neurotoxin and hormonal disruptor. Second, we no longer support placement or unprotected removal of “silver” fillings. These fillings are 10% silver and 45–55% mercury. Mercury is the most toxic substance that we know of, next to radioactive plutonium. Yet dentists often place mercury fillings directly into people’s mouths, inches away from the brain. We have also become certified by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology to remove mercury fillings under strictly controlled conditions in order to minimize any accidental exposure to everyone involved, including the environment. In addition, we have added other procedures and methodologies to our office like Ozone therapy, ceramic implants, screening for jaw-bone cavitations, BPA/ BPB-free materials, metal-free restorations and removable prosthesis, nano silver therapeutics, phase contrast microscopy, and material safety testing. For a complete list of treatment modalities and the details of their application in dentistry, visit WhiteSandsDentistry.com. Weekly Mudra Meditations to Connect with Your “Inner Stillness”

T

his summer, Suncoast Jin Shin Jyutsu is hosting a weekly mudra meditation. In guided mediation style, you will flow through the sequence of eight mudras (finger poses) to ease tension and stress, quiet your mind, and connect with your inner joy and serenity. In 1912, Jiro Murai used these mudras to prove to himself they can release circulation blockages, and he was cured of a terminal illness. This was the beginning of Jin Shin Jyutsu® as we know it today. Participants have commented on the “power” of these meditations. One person shared they were never able to quiet their mind or remain in mediation, but within minutes of the mudra meditation, their mind was quiet, and they experienced a sense of peace they had been yearning for. The mudra meditations are facilitated by Michelle Giambra, LMT, Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help Instructor and Practitioner. Giambra has 20 years of experience with Jin Shin Jyutsu. Her services include private energy harmonizing sessions, self-care classes, and consultations for individuals, families and groups. “Connect with Your Inner Stillness” midweek mudra meditations take place on Wednesdays, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Space is limited, so reserve your spot by 10 a.m. on the day of the meditation. Enjoy a special summertime rate of only $10 through August. Location: Suncoast Jin Shin Jyutsu, 820 Central Avenue, Sarasota. For more information, call 941-228-2972, email Michelle@SuncoastJSJ.com or visit SuncoastJSJ.com.

Understanding Different Healthcare Options

D

o you know all the options for medical care? Primary care doctors should be first on the list, as they have access to your medical history. However, we all encounter emergency situations when seeing a primary doctor is not possible. Know your options for quick access to emergent care and how much it costs to avoid financial surprises. If there is immediate danger, call 911. For other emergent medical needs, here are some other available options: Virtual Visit: For a minor problem that doesn’t require an in-person visit, an online appointment is a convenient option. Cold, flu, fever, pinkeye and sinus problems are just a few routine illnesses that can be diagnosed by a care provider using telemedicine. You don’t need an appointment, and in most cases, the wait is 30 minutes or less. The cost often requires a copayment or coinsurance, sometimes less than a doctor’s visit. Convenience Care Clinic: For minor issues that can’t be scheduled by a primary care doctor, this type of clinic treats skin rashes and earaches, offers flu shots, and addresses minor injuries. You do not need an appointment, but average wait times can vary. This option generally requires a copayment or coinsurance, and will cost about the same as a regular doctor’s visit. Urgent Care Center: For a non-life threatening issue that requires quick care after-hours, an urgent care center will treat low-back pain, respiratory illnesses, stomach illnesses, infections, burns, stitches, sprains and small fractures. You do not need an appointment, and wait times are generally less than 30 minutes. This option requires a copayment that is often higher than a regular doctor’s visit. Emergency Room – For serious or life-threatening illnesses and injuries, this is the safest option. Problems like chest pain, shortness of breath, severe asthma attacks, major burns, severe injuries and kidney stones qualify as emergencies. Wait times vary and can be long, depending on severity. This option usually requires a copayment, and it will be significantly higher than a regular doctor’s visit. For more information and to compare your options, visit UHC. com/CheckChooseGo.

Benefits of the Ketogenic Diet

H

ow would you like to effortlessly manage weight, improve energy and increase mental clarity? The solution to this desire has existed since the beginning of time, and it’s called the ketogenic diet. Mounting evidence suggests the ketogenic diet can be a powerful weapon to combat obesity and chronic issues like heart disease, diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer’s. In addition, the ketogenic diet can optimize brain function and improve the performance of athletes. The ketogenic diet consists of high fat and low carbohydrate intake with moderate protein. When you restrict carbohydrates, the energy storage hormone insulin will release fat, your alternative fuel source, which can then be used as energy. This is a simplistic explanation, but there is a scientific methodology to implementing the diet both safely and effectively. There is no one-size-fits-all plan. Your genetics, lifestyle and current medical status all must be taken into consideration when formulating an effective plan for long-term success. In addition, given our access to conflicting information, it’s easy to become confused about the facts. Consulting with a professional whose job is to decipher the available information and create a plan uniquely tailored to your health goals can make the difference between success and failure. Bonni London is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and holds a Master’s in Clinical Nutrition from NYU. For more information, call 941-685-8074 or visit LondonWellness.net.

She has developed her specialty in a muscle tightening acupuncture face and necklift with no needles used on the face. Up to three treatments can be done in one day with a 10-treatment minimum. Steins’ favorite aspect of her position at Massage Envy is “when it comes to skincare and massage, it’s almost like a puzzle. I figure out what I can do to make people feel better or help with their skincare needs. It’s the greatest feeling in the world to have someone look and feel their best after an appointment. My clients and coworkers over the years have become like family to me. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be here!” The Clark Road Massage Envy location is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. 18

Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity increases cognitive function and reduces fatigue in breast cancer survivors, concludes a University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne study. The 299 participants that had undergone chemotherapy an average of eight years earlier wore an accelerometer for a week to measure their average daily minutes of exercise and completed a set of questionnaires and neuropsychological tests. The findings suggest that those regularly performing this level of exercise benefit through improved attention, memory and multitasking abilities. Also, in a recent Portuguese study of 15 women being treated for advanced breast cancer, eight women performed two, one-hour sessions a week of aerobic, strength-training and arm exercises. After 12 weeks, they experienced significantly less fatigue and pain, improved cardiovascular fitness, better emotional well-being and a greater ability to perform daily tasks, compared to the control group.

Eating lots of fresh tomatoes and fruit, especially apples, helps heal damaged lungs of ex-smokers, reports Johns Hopkins University research published in the European Respiratory Journal. The study, which followed more than 650 people between 2002 and 2012, also found that those that ate more than two tomatoes or more than three portions of fresh fruit daily experienced markedly less of the natural decline of lung function that typically occurs after age 30.

Steam Baths Ease Allergies Researchers from Thailand had 64 people suffering from hay fever (allergic rhinitis) experience halfhour steam baths three times a week for four weeks. Half received baths without herbs; the other half’s baths were enhanced with herbs such as lemongrass and ginger. The two treatments equally lowered symptoms such as sneezing, nasal itching and nasal congestion, but those taking the herbal baths reported greater satisfaction with their treatment.

A recent study published in Neurology suggests there is a link between walking speed and the onset of dementia in older adults. Using a stopwatch, tape and an 18-foot-long hallway to measure the walking speed of 175 adults aged 70 to 79, University of Pittsburgh researchers found that in the course of 14 years, those that slowed down by 0.1 second or more per year were 47 percent more likely to develop cognitive decline. The slowing walkers also experienced shrinkage in the right hippocampus, associated with complex learning and memory. The results held true even after realizing that a slowing gait could be due to muscle weakness, knee pain or another disease. Similarly, a study published in Neurology of 93 adults 70 and older found that slow walkers were nine times more likely to develop non-memory-related mild cognitive decline than moderate-to-fast walkers. Walking speed was monitored using infrared sensors in their homes over a three-year period; participants regularly took memory and thinking tests.

Beating Chronic

Inflammation with Food by Josh Zimmer, L.Ac., DOM

C

hronic inflammation is a blunt reality of the modern health era—a wide-ranging, often puzzling condition that subjects millions to daily pain and disease. Any effort to overcome chronic inflammation’s drain on vitality and quality of life, along with stress management, needs to involve changes in diet. Poor diet with a malfunctioning digestive system often lands people in this state of inflammation. Many of our favorite foods are often the worst for us. I’m talking about processed foods, fatty meats, wheat-based carbs, and salty or sweet snacks prepared with neurotoxic artificial sugars. Complicating matters even further, these foods are often addictive. But the dietary solutions are easy to find—and also delicious. The hard part is accepting these foods’ importance and finding the discipline to change our damaging habits. I’ve written before on the unsung benefits of soups and stews. They’re cooked, eaten warm and provide a healthy balance of the foods we need including vegetables. The Asian diet, much like the Mediterranean diet, also allows for moderate amounts of whole grains, along with fresh fish, meat and poultry. Just view your digestive tract—the stomach, small and large intestines and colon—as an engine that runs better warm than cold. Also, in a decade of observing and treating people for poor digestion, as well as a lifetime spent modifying my own diet, I can

honestly assert that Chinese Yin-Yang theory offers an invaluable approach for repairing the digestive tract. By focusing on how much food we consume, at which times and at what temperatures, this multi-millennial breadth of knowledge is just as important as what we’re actually eating. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we call chronic inflammation “dampness” which is just what it sounds like—a thick, expansive force that seeps into its surroundings and slows our functions down. Imagine that inside the body. When a patient comes into my office complaining of general pain, fatigue and depression, they usually have dampness. Those are the symptoms that someone with chronic inflammatory conditions like Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid Arthritis or Multiple Sclerosis experiences on a daily—or even hourly—basis. In reality though, you don’t need a full-blown chronic inflammatory condition to experience aspects of this issue. Constipation and diarrhea are also signs of digestive imbalance. So are afternoon fatigue, poor sleep, edema and foggy thinking—all common in today’s world. Dampness is rooted in poor digestion. It’s basically the residue of poor metabolism bred by a variety of wrong eating habits that includes the food we consume, the temperature at which its eaten, our mealtimes throughout the day, our state of mind when we’re eating and how much we consume overall. At every step, the typical person gets it wrong. Modern research into the microbiome, the balance of healthy and unhealthy bacteria within our digestive tracts, is confirming the ancient obsession with strong diet and digestion. A poor diet, research shows, is such a broadside on our digestive cells that cells produce an inflammatory response as self-protection. Unfortunately, the attack continues, and the inflammation becomes chronic. In a worst-case scenario, “Leaky Gut” occurs, in which fissures develop in the single-cell walls of our digestive tract and allow undigested food to enter the bloodstream, triggering full-body inflammation. Dr. Vincent Pedre, author of the widelyread Happy Gut, suffered for years before changing his own eating habits. “I realized that I felt my best when eating lean, organic meats and lots of fresh vegetables. I experimented by getting rid of all processed foods from my diet, buying only organic and cooking most of my meals at home. Within two weeks, the improvement in my energy levels and general sense of well-being was striking!” So here’s an anti-inflammatory diet road map. Incorporating

as many of these time-honored ideas as possible is almost guaranteed to help you reduce inflammation. Eat cooked food. Raw food is cold in nature and, over time, slows down our metabolisms. Soups and stews avoid overcooking by gently incorporating all the ingredients. The same is true for stir-fries which cook hot but fast, preserving the nutrients. Eat warm, not cold. We get almost everything out of a refrigerator, but direct consumption impedes digestion. Start avoiding the ice at every turn. Take just a few minutes to heat what comes out of this convenient, modern invention. For example, warm up the milk that goes into your morning cereal or the water that’s in your smoothie. If you’re following up every workout with an iced drink, you’re just negating all that hard work. Eat an abundance vegetables but less salads which are raw and almost always served cold. Be honest with yourself and ask how many passionate salad eaters out there struggle to lose weight. Eat calmer and happier. We’re often so stressed that we ingest our meals too quickly. When possible, lower the volume and take your meals in more quiet surroundings. Eat less. Nutritious dietary habits of Asia and the Mediterranean, for example, emphasize the enjoyment of food without overeating. Can you start by challenging yourself to consume less bread and smaller servings of pasta? Also, don’t eat so late in the evening. Our digestive systems, like our bodies and minds, need rest. Eat and move. Post-meal walks are ideal for jumpstarting the digestive system. At a minimum, commit to moving before crashing on the couch. Finally, take pleasure in feeling better by eating smarter. Q&A Interview with

Authentic Master of Chi, Sifu Michael Stults

Q

i Revolution Founder Jeff Primack has asked these questions after training many days with Sifu Michael Stults at his Kwan in Sarasota, FL. He will be a guest teacher at Qi Revolution National Event taking place July 28–30 at the Bradenton Convention Center. Sifu will present his Legacy art of Chi Tao, a modern body wisdom tradition and combination of Qigong and Kung Fu that he has practiced diligently for over 30 years. Jeff Primack: Your dad was a military fighter and began training you at the age of five in martial arts. How does Kung Fu deepen one’s experience of chi-energy for greater well-being? Sifu Michael: As a child my father wanted me to develop myself which is at the root of all training systems. My training was realistic, so I would be able to face unpredictable situations with a calm, cool and collected state of being. This is the promise of what martial arts offers as a healing art—the ability to know oneself and strategically cultivate tactics that enhance personal survival and well-being. Chi is one’s life force, the sense of self we possess as individuals. Effective chi development and training allows us to know and develop this force as an active and vital resource for our ability to thrive. Chi becomes the primary unified faculty through which we know the world. Primack: I’ve enjoyed hearing your Chi-Philosophy and notice you are an eloquent speaker. You seem to possess “Verbal Kung Fu,” saying exactly what you intend. When you speak at the Qi Revolution National Event, what will you share with this energetically expanded audience? Sifu: Thank you for noticing my voice. I believe right speech is one of the Four Noble Truths, and I have studied the use of one’s voice for both strategic and tactical communications. The Qi Revolution event has positively influenced many of my closest friends, and I love the energy every time I attend. “Chi-Tao” is the art form I will be sharing. It employs breathing, along with specialized movements to cultivate greater mental capacities, healing energy and a sense of wellbeing. For the first time in history, these once considered secret arts are available to sincere seekers. Every human has access to chi. Every human has the ability to observe one’s inherent breath rhythms. Each one of us can explore the most amazing functional structure of the living body we inhabit, and in so doing, create a greater connection to the world. Primack: When practicing Chi Tao at your kwan in Sarasota, I especially enjoyed the fist/palm exercises. As a Qigong practitioner, I could sense the movement of energy through each finger, and it was empowering. How do these exercises activate the mind, body and spirit? 28

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

www.nasrq.com

Sifu: The hand is a creator and maker. The more we understand the structure of the hand and energy matrices it contains, the more we can access this body wisdom that each human being has inherently. In Chinese medicine, the hand embodies a fundamental center of creation. Karate Do, Tai Kwon Do and Chuan Fa—all these beautiful arts—incorporate the hand as the essential orientation point for their practices. In Chi-Tao, we incorporate the training of hand and foot techniques to cultivate overall body strength, agility and stamina. Tesla the scientist believed toe and finger exercises increased intelligence, and the neurological advantages of practices like Qigong and Chi-Tao are just now being fully studied. Hand Mudras have long been a prized secret of successful martial arts cultures, so it could be said that finger and toe conditioning is highly underrated. Primack: Sarasota has been your home for many years, and you have taught some of the most skilled athletes, healing arts practitioners, martial artists and professionals here. Now that Qi Revolution is coming to the Sarasota area for the first time, it’s an honor for us that you will be a guest master presenting. How will you present the essentials of Chi Tao, a routine you’ve practiced for decades, into sequences everyone can do right away? Sifu: Chi-Tao is a moving meditation that brings the practitioner into the living temple of their body, mind and soul. This immediacy makes Chi-Tao such a beautiful art to bring to your event. This chi-focused audience will be able to quickly understand the essential components and experience something wonderful right away. We will learn to use the essential Chi-Tao sequences to build a beautiful form based on the individual’s breath and measure of movement. Primack: If there was one takeaway at the end of the Qi Revolution, what would you wish for each person to embody? Sifu: For me, the Qi Revolution represents a tremendous gathering of beautiful and talented individuals, dedicated to the healing arts and the cultivating of a more peaceful, abundant world. I have been in attendance many times, and have enjoyed the sense community shared among the participants. I have also enjoyed seeing people learn so much while having a good time. People who attend will embody chi because the Qi Revolution has the qualities of a great training in-service to a timeless truth that health is within one’s grasp. We envision a world where earth’s citizens are breathing powerfully and require less anti-depressants to be happy. My longtime friend and gifted clinical counselor Roger Aguiar will be joining us to share how Qigong breathing exercises have transformed his counseling practice. I cannot speak highly enough about the musical genius of Maestro Jami Deva, one of the most talented practitioners of healing sound who will be hosting live musicians to perfect our auditory experience. Altogether, this Qi National Event promises to be one of the most remarkable gatherings of wisdom keepers the Gulf Coast has ever seen. I am honored and humbled to present my small contribution of Chi-Tao. The Qi Revolution national event comes to the Bradenton Convention Center on July 28–30. The cost to attend is $149 for three days of profound Qigong wellness training. No experience is necessary. CE hours are approved for massage therapists and counselors. This event is open to the public, and veterans can attend free-of-charge. For more information, call 800-298-8970 and visit QiRevolution.com or I-Chi.org.

Restoring the Nutritional Value of Crops by Melinda Hemmelgarn

W

hen we think of scientists as men and women in lab coats peering into microscopes, what’s missing is farmers. Our society doesn’t tend to equate the two, yet farmers are active field scientists. How they choose to grow and produce food greatly impacts our shared environment of soil, water and air quality, as well as the nutritional content of food, and therefore, public health. The best field- and lab-based scientists share key traits: they’re curious, keen observers and systems thinkers that learn by trial and error. Both formulate and test hypotheses, collect data, take measurements, assess results and draw conclusions.

Field Science

Diana Dyer, a registered dietitian and organic garlic farmer outside of Ann Arbor, Michigan, explains, “I like to help people see the similarities between the scientific process and good, careful farming—all aspects of which revolve around observations, goals, planning, implementation, intervention and analysis of 30

results—then careful re-planning based on those results.” Dyer and her husband, Dick, started farming after long careers in traditional health care, where the focus was on treating people after they got sick. Through their farm work, they wanted to focus on prevention. “Growing healthy food in healthy soil, our goal was to create and nourish a healthy community from the ground up. Communicating the multiple benefits of healthy soils and ecosystems has been at the core of our vision and responsibility from day one,” she says. The Dyers believe that flavor is key to eating and enjoying truly nourishing foods, and based on their professional health backgrounds and farming experience, they connect healthy soil with higherquality, better-tasting food. In Havre, Montana, Doug Crabtree, and his wife, Anna, manage Vilicus Farms, featured in the book Lentil Underground: Renegade Farmers and the Future of Food in America, by Liz Carlisle. grow organic heirloom and specialty grains, pulses and oilseed crops such as emmer, kamut, black beluga lentils and flax. Asked if he considers himself a scientist, Crabtree first defines the term as “a person who is studying or has expert knowledge of one or more of the natural or physical sciences.” Then he replies, “Given this definition, how could any farmer not be a scientist? An organic farmer is a lifelong student of nature, seeking to emulate her wisdom and processes as we refine our production systems. Organic production isn’t just growing food without toxic chemical inputs, it’s a system that requires conscientiously improving soil, water and associated resources while producing safe and healthy food for America’s growing population of informed consumers.”

Organic Farmers: Growing America’s Health

new Vegetable Systems Trial, a long-term, side-by-side comparison of both biologically organic and chemically based conventional vegetable production. An organic farmer with a Ph.D. in molecular ecology from Drexel University, in Philadelphia, Smith studies how soil quality and crop-growing conditions influence the nutrient density and health-protecting properties of specific vegetables. “Over the past 70 years, there’s been a decline in the nutritional value of our foods,” reports Smith. “During this time, industrial agriculture, with its pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, increased yields and size of crops, but the tradeoff was a decline in nutrient content, known as the ‘dilution effect’.” In addition, Smith explains, greater levels of nitrogen fertilizer, typical of conventional production methods, may also increase a plant’s susceptibility to insects and disease. Smith’s research will give fellow farmers, healthcare providers and consumers a better understanding of how crop production practices influence soil quality and therefore, food quality. For example, research of organic crops shows higher levels of vitamin C; higher-quality protein; plus more disease-fighting compounds called secondary plant metabolites such as lyco-

pene, polyphenols and anthocyanin, the plant pigment responsible for the red, blue and purple colors in fruits and vegetables, as reported in a meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Nutrition. The Rodale Institute has formed partnerships with nutrition and medical researchers at Pennsylvania State University, in University Park. Of particular interest, for example, are extracts from purple potatoes that show promise in helping to kill colon cancer cells. Smith looks forward to identifying growing methods that boost levels of anthocyanin, as well as other health-protecting compounds in crops. The new Regenerative Health Institute, a global research and education center linking soil health to human health, will also be housed at the Rodale Institute. It’s a collaboration between Rodale staff and the Plantrician Project, a nonprofit organization in New Canaan, Connecticut, that promotes whole food and plant-based nutrition, and helps healthcare providers embrace food as medicine as the foundation of their practices. Jeff Moyer, a renowned international authority in organic agriculture and executive director of the Rodale Institute, explains, “It’s not only what you eat that’s

He learned that grazing animals, cover-cropping and no-till farming free of synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides protects and enriches the soil microbiome, which contributes to the nutrient density of plants and human health.

We Are What We and Our Animals Eat

Along with our well-being, livestock farming methods impact our environment, too. A growing body of research including a new study published in Food Science & Nutrition shows that meat and dairy products from animals raised mostly on grass or pasture—as nature intended—contain significantly higher levels of conjugated linoleic acid and omega-3 fatty acids compared to grain-fed animals. These naturally occurring fats help protect us from inflammation, heart disease and cancer. Important in brain, eye and nerve development, omega-3 fatty acids are especially critical for pregnant and breastfeeding women and their infants. Organic farmers, by law, must provide their ruminant animals with significant time on pasture and may not feed them genetically engineered feed or feed produced with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Further, they can’t use synthetic hormones or antibiotics to promote weight gain. In these ways, organic farmers help protect our food, water, and environment from contamination, and reduce the growing global threat of antibiotic resistance. Randolph Center, Vermont, dairy farmers Regina and Brent Beidler diligently study and question changes they witness in their immediate environment. They monitor what grows in their pasture, watch what their cows choose to eat and count the numbers and activities of insects, bees, worms, birds and wildlife. July 2018

Healing Communities

More hospitals nationwide are investing in farms and farmers’ markets to boost patient, employee and community health by increasing access to nutrient-dense, fresh, healthful food. One exceptional example is the new partnership between Virginia’s Allegheny Mountain Institute (AMI) and Augusta Health, an independent, commu-

nity-owned nonprofit hospital in Augusta County, Virginia. The AMI Fellowship program prepares individuals to become farmers, teachers and ambassadors for healthpromoting food systems. “Both AMI and Augusta Health believe that access to excellent health care includes access to healthy food,” explains Sue Erhardt, the institute’s executive director. The AMI Farm at Augusta Health initiative will create an onsite production farm and a community venue for food,

nutrition and gardening education. Their goal is to tackle three major local health issues: poor nutrition, low physical activity and overweight; diabetes; and mental health. A Food Farmacy program for those with or at risk for Type 2 diabetes will provide fresh produce prescriptions at an onsite farmstand, as well as cooking classes. Erhardt recalls her life-changing experience as a teen, hearing American labor leader Cesar Chavez speak about farm worker exposure to pesticides and related cancer clusters. She’s proud to say, “The farm project will exemplify sustainable practices for growing vegetables, including organic fourseason crops and companion planting, while promoting soil health. “We believe this project will promote a better quality of life for staff, patients and community members.” That’s the power of farming when it’s dedicated to optimum health. Fat, Fad Diets and Cholesterol

by Christina Captain, DAOM, MSAOM, MSHN, MA

T

hroughout time, fad diets have been a staple of the American weight loss industry. It seems that almost everyone is looking for the next miracle cure to lose weight and lower cholesterol. In response to that need, the marketplace presents a new and improved fad diet every year. Some of the more dangerous fads use injectable hormones and severe calorie restriction as part of their weight loss strategy. Fad diets do work in the short-term because they cut calories. It makes no difference if the plan is anti-inflammatory, gluten-free, low-carb, liquid, fasting, paleo, no-grain, high-protein, high-fat or foodcombining. All of these plans are low in calories, and most require you to ingest less processed foods and more whole foods. Cleaning your diet can make a difference immediately. With that being said though, fad diets do not appear sustainable for most people. To avoid gaining all your weight back—including your less-thanoptimal cholesterol numbers—the ideal approach is to create a plan that you can continue as a lifestyle instead of a temporary fix. Cholesterol is complicated and should not be relegated to a “you have this number, so you get this treatment” kind of mentality. Cholesterol levels need to be analyzed,

so the balance between the different types of fat is noticeable. Suppressing cholesterol to its lowest levels can be detrimental in most people and should, in my opinion, be considered only in patients with a history of heart disease or previous attacks. This is a great transition to how you can maintain healthy and optimized cholesterol levels through the foods you consume. The newest medical theory on the block was developed by a physician whom I truly respect, Dr. David Perlmutter, MD. In his book Grain Brain, he espouses a world where nobody should consume grain carbohydrates including most fruit. So this means no or limited rice, wheat, millet, quinoa, corn, potatoes and fruit, while advocating for a higher (naturally saturated and monounsaturated) fat diet. Huh? I was taught fats are evil—they make cholesterol higher and damage the cardiovascular system. So how is it fat ideal all of a sudden? The theory behind Grain Brain is that grains, including sugar (which is a grass), can produce inflammation in the body which is known as the foundation of disease. Dr. Perlmutter’s theory is that elevated cholesterol is not the problem we have been conditioned to believe, as the brain requires fat for fuel. Depriving the brain of healthy fat will cause even more damaging situation. He states that grains actually do more harm to the brain functions than any of the natural saturated or monounsaturated fats cause the heart. The idea is that we should be increasing our intake of omega-3 fatty acids because they are fats which keep us healthy overall, fuel the brain and reduce inflammation. Likewise, we should be decreasing our intake of omega-6 fatty acids. If we consume too many omega-6’s (the part of fat that increases inflammation), then we are becoming unhealthy. This comes back around to whole foods versus processed foods. Most of the grains and carbs found in the carb addict’s pantry are processed cookies, cakes, crackers or breads which are heavy in omega-6— in contrast to organic eggs from pastured

hens with naturally occurring fat which is rich in omega-3. Another helpful tip Dr. Perlmutter explains in his book is that most saturated fat comes from animal products (beef, eggs and dairy), and the key to eating naturally occurring saturated fat is to consume animals and animal products that have eaten omega-3 enriched feed or grass. If a cow or hen eats conventional grains (probably GMO a topic for another time), the byproduct is higher in omega-6 which results in more inflammation. But if the animal eats grass, and is free roaming or pastures, the higher the omega-3 content. High omega-3 equals heart and brain health. The other approach to ingesting healthy omega-3’s is by eating foods that contain monounsaturated fat from avocado, raw nuts or nut butter, salmon and olives. While there is ample evidence that points to Grain Brain being a correct theory, there are others who assert we need grains in our diet. As always, I am taking the middle ground. I believe in balance and that eliminating an entire food group is not necessary, unless you have a specific disease process or condition that makes it a detriment to consume that food group. In that line of thinking, if you have diabetes type 2, metabolic disease or even just elevated cholesterol, it might be important to adopt a low-carb, moderately high-fat diet for about 90 days. This could be the answer you are looking for. What I know for sure is that eating monounsaturated and naturally occurring saturated foods will not be detrimental to your cholesterol—in fact, it might even create balance where there is now chaos. hronic pain affects 100 million Americans, with annual treatment costs reaching $635 billion, according to the Institute of Medicine. Worse, opiate-derived pain medications, conventional medicine’s go-to treatment for chronic pain, are addictive and deadly. The Annals of Internal Medicine reports that an estimated 2 million Americans suffered from opioid use disorder involving prescription drugs as of 2016 while 12 million admitted to misusing them. Legal and illegal opioids killed 64,070 Americans in 2016, 21 percent more than the previous year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some opioid addiction stems from use of illegal recreational drugs like heroin and cocaine, but the National Institute of Drug Abuse testified to the U.S. Senate that as of 2014 more than four times as many Americans were addicted to prescription opioids (2.1 million) than heroin (467,000). Natural approaches, less harmful in relieving pain and thereby preventing drug addictions, are addressing and ameliorating long-term back or neck, nerve and 34

even cancer pain, and saving lives. The first step in preventing dependency is to avoid opioids completely, says Fadel Zeidan, Ph.D., assistant professor of neurobiology and anatomy at the Wake Forest School of Medicine, in WinstonSalem, North Carolina: “Opioids don’t work for chronic pain. They may be effective for acute pain, such as right after an injury or surgery, but they are ineffective and addictive in the long run.” Here are several better ways to feel better. Mindfulness meditation: Zeidan recommends mindfulness meditation and cites a University of Massachusetts study of people with chronic pain in which pain lessened by at least 65 percent after 10 weeks of this practice. “Mindfulness meditation is about discipline and regulating one’s attention. It appears to shut down the thalamus, the brain’s gatekeeper, and the brain’s ability to register pain,” explains Zeidan. Yoga: Strongly positive effects have been reported in several studies, including one

Acupuncture: The ancient Chinese modality that’s been used to treat all types of pain for millennia has become such a mainstream treatment that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends that healthcare providers learn more about it to help patients avoid prescription opioids. “All pain starts with imbalance,” says Terri Evans, a doctor of Oriental medicine in Naples, Florida. “Acupuncture is about creating balance in the body and in releasing the fascia, where pain patterns get locked.” Marijuana: All forms of marijuana, or cannabis, are illegal on the federal level, but medical marijuana is now legal in 29 states and the District of Columbia. In a study from San Francisco General Hospital published in the journal Neurology, researchers found that smoking the first

Drumming Out Drugs Music, specifically drumming, stimulates the release of endorphins, the body’s own morphine-like painkillers. cannabis cigarette reduced pain by 72 percent in a group of patients with painful neuropathy. The body’s endocannabinoid system, found in the brain, organs, connective tissues and immune cells, is one of its natural pain-coping mechanisms, and is most affected by cannabis. Mitch Earleywine, Ph.D., associate professor of clinical psychology at the State University of New York at Albany, author of Understanding Marijuana: A New Look at the Scientific Evidence and a member of the advisory board of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, is an advocate of medical marijuana. While regarding it as helpful for chronic pain with little risk of addiction, he concludes it’s “great for a small handful of conditions, but it’s not the cure-all that some are suggesting.” CBD oil: Dr. Hyla Cass, of Marina del Rey, California, an integrative physician expert in psychiatry and addiction recovery, and author of The Addicted Brain and How to Break Free, is more comfortable with CBD (cannabidiol) oil. It’s a hemp product legal in 45 states, provided it qualifies in non-addictive levels of THC, the component of cannabis that induces euphoria (see TheCannabis Industry.org/state-marijuana-policies-map). Some CBD oils contain trace amounts of THC, not enough to induce a “high” or contribute to addiction, but there are also products that contain no THC at all. By definition, hemp’s THC content is less than 0.3 percent versus marijuana’s 5 to 35 percent. “CBD oil won’t make you high,” says Cass. “In and of itself, CBD oil is very potent. You don’t need the THC for pain relief. There’s no need to go down the slippery slope of using an illegal substance.” In addition to CBD oil’s pain-relieving effects on the endocannabinoid system, says Cass, it’s a powerful anti-inflammatory, which contributes to its effectiveness in addressing the underlying causes of chronic pain, confirmed by University of South Carolina research. EXERCISE TO SLEEP BY Quell Insomnia and Nighttime Anxiety

nsomnia plagues millions of Americans, and finding a solution can be difficult when the condition is chronic. Prolonged lack of quality sleep compromises health and sets the stage for depression, high blood pressure, obesity, inflammation, poor memory and even serious risk of heart attack. The good news is that natural alternatives, especially regular exercise, offer relief. Northwestern University research published in the journal Sleep Medicine even confirms better results from exercise than other natural approaches.

Timing is Everything

Circadian rhythm, the body’s internal clock, governs physiological patterns involving sleep and hunger, and is cued by temperature and sunlight, so timing our exercise is important. Other studies at Northwestern reveal that workouts earlier in the day yield better results because muscles also have their own rhythm (internal clocks) that help them perform more efficiently due to the presence of daylight, and function optimally then. According to the National Sleep Foundation, a decrease in body temperature after an initial increase during physical activity initiates sleep, which also suggests that exercising later in the day, but not before bed, is helpful, as well. Research from Princeton University further shows that exercise can help the brain process stress, helping to minimize anxiety which often accompanies or fosters insomnia. Long Beach, California, holistic podiatrist Don Kim, creator of The Walking Cure Program, affirms, “The first thing to address is the circadian rhythm—what I call the body’s highest peak and lowest valley. The entire system needs to get used to slowing down.” Kim’s life changed for the better, including his struggles 36

The more oxygen the brain receives, the lower the levels of cortisol that trigger racing thoughts. Other forms of moderate aerobic exercise involving cardio machines, spinning, cross-country skiing, swimming and dancing are also beneficial ways to increase oxygen intake. Chicago fitness expert Stephanie Mansour explains, “Improving circulation helps to increase the body’s energy during the day and helps you wind down at night.” It’s a common misconception that rushing through the day is the same as engaging in exercise. Mansour elaborates: “Exercising is different than just being busy or working outside, because it’s a time where you connect your mind, body and breath. You’re forced to be present. It’s difficult to think about your to-do list when you’re physically engaged.” According to Sleep.org, just 10 minutes of regular aerobic activity anytime improves sleep quality significantly. Plus, it abates the likelihood of sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome that sedentary lifestyles can cause or exacerbate.

Cultivating Calm

Restorative yoga instructor Naima Merella, manager of Studio 34, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, says, “We’re not taught to value rest, and conditions like feeling overwhelmed and insomnia are the result. Most people in our culture suffer from an overactive fight-or-flight response, so engaging our parasympathetic nervous system, or relaxation response, can balance this.” Merella advocates yoga, breath work and certain qigong exercises. “One option is to do a more active yoga practice to burn off excess nervous energy, and then end with restorative poses to engage the relaxation response. It all depends on a person’s schedule and what they’re able to do. Ideally, I would suggest doing at least 30 minutes of restorative yoga and breath work before bed, but even a few minutes of a restorative pose or breathing technique can be helpful. I’ve found the kundalini yoga meditation, Shabad Kriya, most helpful for sleeping.” Renowned yogi Janice Gates, of Marin County, California, also advises physical practice, as well as understanding the foundational teachings. “It’s important to remember that you’re not your anxiety. It’s easy to identify with suffering and conditions that cause it. Yoga supports us to be free of that conditioning. Keep in mind that an issue can be more mental at times and more physiological at other times, so we want to address both with asanas early in the day to balance the nervous system and mindful breathing at bedtime.” Whichever form of exercise we choose, we should be gentle with ourselves. As Merella reminds us, “The best thing we can do is send ourselves compassion and love.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer, author and multimedia artist. Connect at MarlainaDonato.com.

Improve Your Finances with Feng Shui by Christina Captain, DAOM, MSAOM, MSHN, MA

Lucky Dragon says:

“U

se these tips to enhance your financial prosperity. This month, we are focusing on how to increase financial energy with these feng shui approaches!

Emphasize the element of water. Money is water in feng shui philosophy, so utilizing a water element such as a fountain or fish tank in your home is essential to increasing wealth. The front entrance of your home should be welcoming and feature an easy flow to the inside. So adding these water elements to the front entrance can attract more financial success. Find the money area of the space. Locate the money corner in your space which is positioned to the left, diagonally across from the front entrance. There are some nuances to this, but generally it can be found in this location. The traditional corner is located using the Bagua (you might need a professional to help you with this aspect). There can be multiple money corners, one representing the house (larger structure) and one in each room. The master bedroom is the most important money corner and should not have any excess clutter.

Display symbols of wealth. Store change in a glass bowl in your wealth area to create the image of abundance and wealth. Also, do not remove money from the jar and make sure to keep adding more change over time. Allow it symbolize that you want the finances to keep growing. Make sure the jar has a lid or cap to prevent the change from accidentally spilling out.

Keep the kitchen and plumbing well maintained. The kitchen is the feng shui heart of the home and the source of true wealth. The kitchen should be free of clutter, and all appliances should be in working order. Most importantly, the plumbing should never leak and must be repaired as soon as a problem is detected. Leaking water is literally leaking money, so this needs to be suppressed as soon as possible. Follow these tips, and you will begin feel a shift in your bank account! Does feng shui excite you? Anti-Inflammatory

Flavorful Ways to Lower Disease Risk

A

by Judith Fertig

ny time our bodies sense an “invader”—a microbe, virus, plant pollen or unwelcome chemical— they go into high alert, producing white blood cells to fight it off. Once the danger has been thwarted, normal functioning returns. If we continue to expose ourselves to these threats, then the high-alert process, known as inflammation, becomes chronic. This disturbance of natural equilibrium can lead to cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, depression and pain. It can also mask or worsen autoimmune diseases. Eating foods with natural anti-inflammatory properties can help the body function better.

Physician Support

“Many experimental studies have shown that components of foods or beverages may have anti-inflammatory effects,” says Dr. Frank Hu, also a Ph.D. and professor of nutrition and epidemiology in the department of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “A healthy diet is beneficial not only for reducing the risk of chronic diseases, but also for improving mood and overall quality of life.”

www.nasrq.com

Hu, Josh Axe, a chiropractor and doctor of natural medicine, in Nashville, Tennessee, and Dr. Andrew Weil, director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, in Tucson, promote anti-inflammatory foods, backed by recent studies, on their websites. “Small, gradual changes are typically more sustainable and easier for the body to adapt to,” writes Axe. “So rather than emptying your pantry and sailing off to the Mediterranean, you can pursue an anti-inflammatory diet one step at a time.” That’s what Andrea Adams Britt did. A professional wedding cake baker from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Britt experienced bewildering symptoms, including digestion issues, depression, migraines, weight gain and skin irritation. In 2015, she eliminated flour and sugar from her diet, and then added more organic leafy green vegetables, coconut oil and wild-caught salmon. Her symptoms went away one at a time, and by last January, she had also lost 100 pounds. The solution for her was to create flavorful dishes that she enjoyed eating, so she did not feel deprived.

cross our nation, the increased ubiquity of opiate addictions has reached a staggering proportion. In fact, millions of Americans seeking a reprieve from chronic ailments depend on these medications to narcotize their pain—even if just temporarily. Major pharmaceutical companies are more than willing to accommodate this demand, and a vicious cycle perpetuates. The more reliant on opiates the Western population becomes, the more “Big Pharma” stands to benefit financially. In other words, this establishment is profiting from an upsurge of addiction. But there is a more natural and economical (albeit controversial) remedy to address symptoms of pain without the hazardous effects of opiate usage—medical marijuana. While both conventional medicine and mainstream culture are both resistant to endorse medical marijuana as a sustainable and effective option, those in the holistic community are embracing and advocating for its legitimization within the broader healthcare industry. And their reasoning is valid. “Opiates were designed to create dependency which has resulted in the worst opiate and heroin epidemic in U.S. history,” explains Nick Garulay, owner of My Florida Green, a certification center striving to make the benefits of medical marijuana accessible to all patients with qualifying conditions. “Some people are in denial about the direct correlation between opiates and heroin. But often, when a patient’s opiate prescription expires, they are addicted to the substance and need immediate relief. That $10 bag of heroin seems like an 40

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

unfathomable choice until someone is addicted to opiates, then it becomes a quick solution. In 2016, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported a total of 66,000 opiate overdoses, not including heroin. That’s over 5,000 people who are dying each month from prescribed medications.” In contrast, there is no record of anyone overdosing from marijuana intake— ever. When used for medicinal purposes, its standards of both efficacy and safety are authenticated. Due to the tireless efforts of agencies like My Florida Green, who educate physicians and the public on how medical marijuana can improve their wellbeing, the stigmas and misconceptions are beginning to evolve. Systemic reform is a process though. Garulay continues, “The perception is slowly changing, but we still have an uphill battle ahead. Many doctors are brainwashed during medical school from textbooks written by ‘Big Pharma.’ These drug companies devise intricate sales systems that urge physicians to streamline prescriptions. In order to address this stigma, we all need to work together as a society to educate each other on the remedial benefits of medical marijuana and how we can heal ourselves naturally without harmful drugs that cause permanent damage.” But how exactly does medical marijuana ease debilitating pain, while counteracting the risks associated with opiate usage? “As previously mentioned, opiates are responsible for more than 5,000 deaths per month. Marijuana has never killed anyone in the 10,000 years it’s been used as medicine. This fact usually doesn’t resonate with people, but it should. Medical marijuana diverts the brain into forgetting about pain and supports harmonic balance which the body needs to reach homeostasis. Once this state of equilibrium has been obtained, the body can then heal itself,” enumerates Garulay. He proceeds to describe how My Florida Green has transformed the accessibility and convenience of this life-enhancing treatment. “We developed the first and

www.nasrq.com

only state compliant medical marijuana software, created for Florida specifically. We entered the market in November 2016 when it still wasn’t 100% legal, but we committed ourselves to expediting medical marijuana certifications for patients in need. We now operate six active medical marijuana certification centers throughout Florida with another four in the pipeline. “We are dedicated to offering a premium experience with quality education and full access to the services for a price that’s affordable. Considering the software and technology we have implemented to facilitate all stages of the certification process, it’s a simple and streamlined procedure. Once a patient arrives at one of our locations, they are checked in electronically, and their state paperwork is verified. “The patient is then educated on the benefits of medical marijuana, the different products available, and how to administer and titrate the dosage. Each patient leaves with a folder explaining the important facts and ordering details. We also work continuously to find discounts for each dispensary, so that patients can take advantage of these exclusive deals.” Pain management is an inescapable need. Opiate addiction is an escalating concern. These two realities brush against each other—they cannot harmlessly coexist. But expanding our minds, even just to consider the possibility of medical marijuana as a beneficial healthcare adjunct, could revolutionize how this nation combats the prescription drug epidemic. And moreover, it could reframe how people advocate for their own wellness—stigmas not included. My Florida Green is located in Sarasota, Naples, St. Petersburg, Davie and Palm Bay, with locations in Orlando and Pensacola coming soon as well. Four Steps to Authentic Living How to Live a Deeply Joyful Life by Jan Desai

1. Connect with the inner voice.

Uncovering authenticity comes from within. We learn to discern and heed the inner voice of wisdom through daily silence, a still space that allows messages to resonate. This ever-present guidance system is always spot on. The key is to connect often. Be grateful for the fruits of quiet moments. Maybe they occur during prayer and meditation, in the shower, walking in solitude without earphones or driving with the radio off. Breathe deeply, cherishing an open heart. Gut feelings often presage inner knowing.

made me who I am today? What experiences have created this unique divine work? Are my eyes alight or dim? What am I feeling? Am I weighed down by burdens, exhausted by current choices?” Simply ask the questions; don’t look for answers, but be wary of the ego’s vote for falsehoods.

Beginning today, do one new thing daily that brings joy. Temporary happiness builds and reinforces joy, but soul-deep joy weaves a base of strength within. It’s an attitude—an outlook. When we are flourishing spiritually, emotionally and physically, it evokes joy in how we live and feel. Move out of familiar comfort zones and do something unexpected. Pursue a heartfelt desire long delayed. Watch a comedy with friends. Take a dance class. Call an old friend. Volunteer somewhere nurturing. Be in this moment. Understand that this is what life will feel like when living authentically, free of masks and pretense— when each day is meaningful and suffused with joy. Remember, authentic living is about the journey, not the destination. Jan Desai is a wife, mother, entrepreneur and visionary who transformed her life at age 50 by breaking with conventions. 2. Realize the difference between soul and ego.

Connected with our soul—the seat of everything positive, the venue of all potential and light—we experience spaciousness, unconditional love and complete support. If accusations, blame or heavy judgment arise, it’s just the ego trying to maintain the status quo. By dismissing its raging, it dissipates.

3. Reconnect with authentic selfhood.

We must banish every misconception and lie we tell about ourselves. Falsehoods define us just like the things that are true. Take a good, long look in the mirror and ask, “Who is this person? What has

The Pesticide that Stalks in the Darkness, the Plague that Destroys at Midday by Juliette Jones “Some people think that [what is going on in the world] is too overwhelming, and feel intimidated and dispirited. Trust me, knowing about it is far more empowering than not knowing.” —Dark Journalist

here are many people who remain deeply asleep to the pernicious effect of toxic substances and technologies on human biology—not to mention the murder of the environment. This “sleep” can’t exactly be chalked up to lack of awareness, as there are messages dispatched on mainstream television daily, exposing significant examples of horrific happenstance and further desensitizing people at large. In the past few decades, it has become increasingly clear that a way of life has been creeping into the core energetics of the human soul which implants a negative internal investment in the natural world and the well-being of living creatures—humans included. Like the paradigm of the frog boiled alive as the temperature in the pot slowly rises, we fail to be conscious of what is imperiling our well-being. This metaphor reflects the inability or unwillingness of people to react or become aware of threats introduced gradually over time. Well, the temperature is rising quickly now. More than ever before, people who desire to keep their health—and sanity—need to tune up awareness and act upon accurate information, often not found on mainstream paths due to the usual unadulterated power and profit motives. Those who keep their heads in the sand, like the frog in hot water, will meet with unforeseen consequences. Recently, I was aghast to hear about the $63-billion-dollar merger of Monsanto with Bayer Corporation. Monsanto, of course, is infamous for introducing some of the most monstrous chemicals in the world such as Agent Orange, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) banned in 1979 due to causing environmental contamination and severe health issues, and Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup herbicide which is also linked to serious health effects including cancer. The European Union has banned Glyphosate in 28 countries. For many, the name Monsanto is synonymous with evil and dark dealings. The Bayer name conjures a more innocuous profile, associated with products like Bayer aspirin, bur Bayer is responsible for one of the greatest headaches of all time—the neonicotinoid pesticides, thought to be influential in the decline in pollinator populations (honeybees, etc.) which threatens disastrous consequences for our environment. 42

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

www.nasrq.com

This merger, estimated to give Bayer-Monsanto control of 25% of the seed and pesticide distribution throughout the world, will expand the dispensation of genetically modified (GMO) seeds—an assault which cannot be recalled. Bayer will be retiring the Monsanto name, and will no doubt purvey their destructive influence under the Bayer name or through subsidiaries. “The consolidation of the biotech industry means that consumers must be even more vigilant in the coming years for products that negatively impact human health and the environment.” —The Pulse of Natural Health Newsletter Be on high alert—it is not possible here to describe or recap the gravity and scope of the forces leading to this strange, dark moment in human history. We teeter on a precarious edge that must be seen for what it bodes. Recall that when terrible threats become collectively visible, there abides a potential for awakening and transformation. This requires affirmative action. A recent article by Dr. Joseph Mercola, “Harvest of Greed: The Merger of Bayer and Monsanto,” offers a well-documented look into the evolution of this challenge, as well as a path to self-protection and social action. This is an informative resource to start with. “A willingness to approach edges, to live on the edge, will increase the probability that a person [or a culture] will approach a spiritual edge—the intersection point between the world of matter and the world of spirit where extraordinary breakthroughs in consciousness can occur.” —Thom Hartmann Local Influence I happen to live in an area where nature is appreciated in varying degrees. The neighborhood is centered in a designated bird sanctuary. Most of my neighbors are Eastern European, and several of them keep bees—beekeepers usually have a higher than average respect for the natural world. However, about half of the residents in this neighborhood continue using pesticides or weed killers on their lawns. I explained to one neighbor how poisons seep into the underground water, resulting in collective damage to both animals and the environment. To this woman’s credit, she stopped this practice immediately. It turns out, she hadn’t previously given thought as to why her lawn care man had recommended the service. After a year of discontinuing this service, her lawn doesn’t look any different—and her bill has been reduced. I asked another neighbor, who purports to love the environment and wild animals, if she was aware of the ingredients in the weed killer she was using. She didn’t know, so I asked her why she used it at all, considering the natural setting and regular lawn maintenance. Her response was, “Because I always did it when I lived up north,” then waived off further comments as to the collective importance of the use of pesticides, making an argument that she didn’t want to know about the negative impacts occurring in the world. Not long ago, unfortunately, she landed in an emergency room from a severe reaction to chemicals in her hair dye. So here is the moral to this incident: Knowing about the use of toxic substances on our person and upon the environment is far more empowering than not knowing. Applied knowledge is power.

produced inside GMO crops, the side effects from genetic engineering create dangers. Monsanto’s “Roundup-ready” corn has higher levels of putrescine and cadaverine, compounds responsible for dead body odor. They promote bad breath and also can enhance the risk of allergic reactions and cancer.

Getting Cancer from Food

Why More Pets Are Getting Cancer

GMO Toxins Permeate Pet Foods by Jeffrey Smith

I

n the late 1990s, the nationally syndicated newspaper columnist, “animal doctor” Michael Fox received many letters about dogs and cats with diarrhea, itchy skin and other persistent disorders. He advised all inquirers to immediately remove foods that contain genetically modified organisms (GMO). Dozens of follow-up thank-you notes verified that his recommendation worked. “One of the main reasons I came to the conclusion of blaming GMOs in pet foods for this cluster of health problems is that essentially, nothing else in the health

background of these animals had been changing,” says Fox. Many vets have also reported a rise in pet obesity, skin conditions, inflammation, degenerative disk disease, cancer and even shorter lifespans since late 1996, when GMOs and associated poisons entered America’s food supply. For example, most GMOs like soy, corn and canola are designed by Monsanto to tolerate high doses of its Roundup herbicide. Corn is also engineered to produce an insect-killing poison called Bt-toxin. Together with pesticides sprayed on or

Cancer rates among our country’s 185 million pets are skyrocketing, especially among dogs. Canines have the highest cancer rate of all mammals; in America, about half are struck with the disease. In 2015, the World Health Organization classified Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate, as a “probable human carcinogen.” Insufficient human studies exist, but a goodly number of animal studies confirm that it causes cancer. Preliminary tests commissioned by the Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT), an educational nonprofit, on the dangers of GMOs, revealed that six popular dog and cat foods contained more glyphosate residues than most human foods. Possibly because pets are exposed to Roundup from spraying both foods and lawns, a pilot study by Health Research Institute Laboratories, which tests glyphosate levels in food and environments, found the levels in dogs’ urine were 50 times higher than the average in humans.

Better digestion is the top reported benefit for humans and pets that switched to non-GMO and largely organic foods. All conditions that improved in pets also improved in humans.

Approach to Wildly Healthy Pets, says, “Allergies, gastrointestinal problems, autoimmune diseases, behavioral problems [and other conditions] improve when we take the animals off of these GMO-laden, glyphosate-ridden foods, and put them on something that’s more organic and natural. It’s a dramatic change.” In a survey conducted by IRT, 3,256 people that adopted a non-GMO and largely organic diet reported improvements in 28 health conditions, many of which have increased in the U.S. parallel with the growing prevalence of GMOs and Roundup. Further, 80 pet owners cited improvements in status for eight health issues, including digestion, allergies and skin conditions, when their pet’s food was changed. Plausible explanations include that glyphosate is patented as an antibiotic, and so easily kills beneficial bacteria in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This could possibly interfere with digestion, detoxification and immunity. According to integrative veterinarian Karen Becker, in Chicago, the Healthy Pets expert for Mercola.com, “We know now that animals consuming genetically modified foods… can change the terrain of their GI tract.” Most notably, glyphosate and Bt-toxin are linked to leaky gut—unnatural

holes or gaps created in intestine walls. Veterinarian Marlene Siegel, owner of the Pasco Veterinary Medical Center, in Lutz, Florida, says, “We know that the root cause of most disease is inflammation; and that inflammation is coming from the leaky gut.”

Organic Surpasses Non-GMO

GMOs are not the only crops drenched with Roundup. It’s also sprayed on other foods to dry them, often just a few days before harvest, including wheat, oats, barley and other cereals. It’s also used on lentils, citrus orchards, sunflowers, potato fields and vineyards. Organic growers and processors are not allowed to use GMOs, Roundup or other synthetic toxins. It’s safest to choose organic; if unavailable, at least buy verified non-GMO. Jeffrey M. Fat, Fat, Go Away... And Stay Away! by Rene Ng, AP, L.Ac.

T

ime flies. Summer is here. And that means outdoor activities, sunshine, boating, travels and, of course, the beach. Basically, life becomes a beach, and just about everyone is aiming to lose those extra pounds to prepare for wearing their bathing suits. Some people attempt everything from increased exercise, diets, sauna rooms, steam rooms, salt baths, intensive workouts, supplements and more. But the problem is they often find that no matter the approach, they still cannot shed those extra pounds. All their efforts seem like just a waste of time and money. Does this issue sound familiar?

Understanding Weight Gain

Before you can attempt to lose weight, you first need to understand what the excess weight is from. If you don’t know the problem, how can you find a solution? The excess weight could be from a poor diet, but this is not the only possible source. In fact, many people have issues with their weight despite maintaining healthy diet and exercising regularly. In some cases, weight gain is directly tied to an imbalance in the body, an underlying health issue, and other factors such as weakened functions caused by aging. If you can identify the area that need to be addressed, then you can manage the excess weight.

Excess Fat versus Excess Water

Let’s assume, for example, that a poor diet—such as drinking too many sodas or eating too much chocolate—is not your issue. Nor is exercise, assuming that you workout on a regular basis. So what is causing the excess weight? You need to determine whether it’s resulting from excess water, excess fat or a combination of both. Then a treatment approach can be prescribed.

Excess Fat

This happens when the body’s function of managing fat—including production, storage and use of fat—is not functioning optimally. In Chinese Medicine terms, this is associated with the liver and gall bladder organ systems. When this impairment occurs, the body is unable to process fat, and it gets retained. High cholesterol and triglycerides, fibroids, cysts, lipomas, UTI, vaginitis, endometriosis and diverticulitis are common symptoms associated with the same underlying condition, as are rashes, psoriasis, and hives. Factors that could trigger excess fat include emotions, such as anger or depression, and nutrition (alcohol, spicy foods, sour 46

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

www.nasrq.com

foods, processed sugar, and dairy). Medications can also be a cause, especially strong ones like those used in chemotherapy and radiation. Treatment protocols will be focused on the liver and Gall bladder functions, restoring them to optimal function which helps manage the excess fat.

Excess Water

When you feel “bloated” or experience a sensation of “heaviness,” this is a sign that your body is retaining water. In these circumstances, when you move your belly around, you will notice that it “ripples” just like it was filled with water. Excessive water retention comes from either the body not converting water into the fluids it needs, the body not excreting the water through urination or perspiration, or the individual is absorbing or drinking too much water. The transformation of water into bodily fluids is part of the digestive function, and is tied directly to the spleen and stomach organ systems. When these systems are healthy and functional, water that is consumed is readily absorbed and transformed into fluids. Factors that can overtax the spleen and stomach include raw vegetables, ice cold drinks, dairy and spicy foods. The next cause for water retention is due to the body’s inability of to excrete the water. This function is related to the kidney and urinary bladder systems. If these are healthy, the filtration system of the body is working, the toxins are filtered out through urine or sweat. But if not, the water is retained, and toxins build up in the body. Factors that can overtax the kidneys and bladder, and include sitting or standing too long. Certain foods, especially bone broth, can help to strengthen the kidneys.

Conclusion

There are many factors that contribute to weight gain, which is essentially comprised of excess water or excess fat. Poor nutrition and inadequate exercise are among the causes, but many other factors also result in weight gain. The real solution to managing your weight lies in knowing what is behind the weight gain, and then finding the right treatment plan. Chinese Medicine is extremely effective for weight management, and your acupuncture physician can certainly help. Remember, the weight problem is just a symptom of a larger, underlying health issue that needs to be addressed. Once this happens, more often than not, the weight issue will improve—or even disappear. Rene Ng, AP, L.Ac., is a board-certified, licensed Acupuncture Physician and Chinese Herbalist in Sarasota. Incorporate Play Spaces

THE JOY OF DIRT Gardening Connects Kids to Nature

hildren benefit from a close connection with nature, and there’s no better place to learn about plants and soil than a garden. Families don’t need lots of space, as even a small collection of potted plants holds fascination for youngsters. The first step is to understand a garden as seen by a child that may be more interested in creative play than in making things grow. Whitney Cohen, education director at Life Lab, a nonprofit that promotes garden-based education in Santa Cruz, California, thinks kids benefit most from what she calls “dirt time”—spent outdoors

interacting with plants, animals, soil and everything else. “When a child plants a seed, tends it over time and ultimately pulls a carrot out of the soil and eats it, they begin to know down in their bones that food comes from plants; that healthy food is delicious; and that we are part of a vast and beautiful web of life,” Cohen says. This learning process may not match a parent’s idea of a lovely garden. “Children don’t make neat rows. They water leaves and flower petals rather than the roots. They accidentally step on young seedlings. Gardening with children is messy and chaotic, but there is always learning going

“Children might rather be playing than following instructions,” Koons-Hubbard counsels, but it’s easy to incorporate space for free play in the garden. Depending on a child’s imagination and which toys are used, a spot of diggable soil in the shade might morph into a dinosaur refuge, pony farm or secret place for fairies. Kids are also attracted to stepping stones, which encourage hopping, stretching and even counting. Don’t be surprised if kids turn some of them into a stage or a place to stack rocks or leaves. Children love mixing soil and water together into mud. When given a bucket of clay, soil and water, kids quickly discover they can use mud to paint, sculpt or make fantasy pies decorated with leaves, sticks or flowers. “Playing in mud fully engages the senses, and there are studies that show it can benefit the immune system and make us happier,” says Leigh MacDonald-Rizzo, education director at the Ithaca Children’s Garden, in New York. References include the University of Bristol, UK, University of Colorado Boulder and University of California, Los Angeles. “Mud isn’t anything, really, and that open-ended quality lends itself to

joyously creative play that helps children develop a relationship with the natural world,” she says.

Top Tools for Kids Small children notice things close to the ground, which become even more interesting when seen through a magnifying glass. Sturdy kids’ versions in bright colors are easy to find if they get misplaced outdoors. Curious children love getting a closeup look at worms and other critters in the worm bin or compost pile, or the structures inside flowers. “But when we just let the children explore, they’ll find loads of intriguing objects we may never have thought of, like water caught on the fuzzy underside of a leaf, a sparkly rock or rough tree bark,” Cohen says. Children love to water plants, especially during hot summer weather. Small watering cans that hold only a little water are easy for kids to handle and limit overdoing it. Waterfilled spray bottles also encourage exploration while keeping kids cool. Digging to discover what’s underground comes naturally to kids, and preschoolers do best with toy-size tools with short handles. Older kids can control child-size spades and rakes better than heavier adult tools.

Keeping Outdoor Space Safe Remove the worry from gardening with kids by minimizing safety risks. Replace poisonous or prickly plants with vegetables, herbs or edible flowers and teach kids of all ages not to eat plants unless they have first been checked by an adult. Insects can be both interesting and threatening, and flying insects often are attracted to bright colors. Dress kids in light, neutral colors to avoid unwanted attention from bugs. Avoid chemical fertilizers and sprays, and opt for organic solutions. Our digital world creates more opportunities than ever for poor posture

with a strong and upright posture, Daniel also became more confident socially. He spoke in a stronger voice, and his mother reported that he was more comfortable and successful amongst his peers. It was a pleasure to see how these former postural problems resolved. His head was positioned above his shoulders once again which were, in turn, squared properly above his hips, and his feet and knees were now facing directly forward as they should be.

The Key

Why Posture Matters for Kids (and Adults) by Eric Winder, DC

A

dults instinctively notice poor posture in children which is why “sit up straight!” can be such a common phrase for kids to hear. Parents understand what scientists have more recently discovered—poor posture can affect mood, health and confidence. But poor posture can be difficult to change without an understanding of what causes it. To illustrate the triggers, resulting problems and successful treatment of poor posture, consider the story of Daniel, a young man who now has excellent posture. Initially, he had weak posture, and he came into my practice for relief from intense low-back and neck pain with several postural faults. His shoulders slumped forward, his head and hips were both in front of his shoulders, and his knees turned in, knocking together while his feet turned out. His mother also expressed that he was less confident socially than he had been as a younger child.

Causes of Poor Posture There are a few main problems that cause poor posture, and Daniel exhibited several of them. The main contributors are typically: • weakness from lack of physical activity • negative habits such as slouching over cell phones, laptops and handheld games 50

past injuries (in Daniel’s case, a prior auto accident) • being overweight The above issues can all lead to an additional problem that makes poor posture difficult to correct on your own. The physical stresses listed above can trigger restrictions in fascia (fibrous connective tissue) that lock bad posture into place. When this happens, exercise and self-stretching often cannot restore proper alignment. However, fascial release treatment applied to the right areas can make postural correction happen rapidly.

Fringe Benefits In my office, when I work with posture correction, I typically aim for the pain relief first. In Daniel’s case, his low-back and neck pain improved wonderfully, and his posture improved right along with the alleviation of pain. Once critical areas of fascia restriction were released, he was faithful about doing the home stretches and exercises that would help his alignment. However, he received more than just pain relief. In a paper published in 2015 by Health Psychology Journal, researchers showed that posture affects mood, pulse pressure and social confidence. As he began to stand

While there are conditions that make postural change difficult, for most people, it is surprising how much posture can improve in a short period of time. In particular, children respond quickly to fascia release therapies, like those used in my office. Of course, home care in the form of specific stretches and exercises is important after releasing fascia restrictions. In some cases, improving ergonomics, such as changing gaming or computer posture habits, is also important.
