on’t be fooled by the weather outside––snowbirds are beginning to arrive from up north, pumpkin spice lattes are making their annual resurgence, and there’s a slight breeze rustling through the palm trees. That’s right, autumn is officially back here on the Suncoast, and this month’s issue of Natural Awakenings is full of inspiration to keep you feeling vibrant, renewed and healthy in the new season we’re entering into! Our feature article for October is all about “Transformative Travel,” and it’s a must-read for anyone who’s planning a vacation to slow down and de-stress before the holiday season approaches. This article points out the influence that experiencing different cultures and diverse ecologies can have on your well-being, and it even offers suggestions on how to take your mindfulness practice on the road. Speaking of mindfulness, this month’s “Healthy Kids” article discusses the benefits of meditation and spiritual awareness for children. Teaching young minds to pause the mental chatter and enter a state of deeper consciousness has a positive effect on their development and ability to self-regulate. The Sarasota area offers multiple youth-centered meditation programs to help your kids become more focused in school, committed in their activities and grounded in life. Finally, as we transition into cooler temperatures (by Florida standards, of course!), it’s important to make sure our bodies can adapt to the change. If you’re prone to cold or flu symptoms around this time of year, alternative modalities such as chiropractic treatments can help strengthen your nervous system which benefits immune function as well. Our “Healing Ways” article guides you through the process of choosing the right chiropractor and treatment regimen for optimal health maintenance––both during this season and all year-round. All these and more await you inside this month’s Natural Awakenings issue, and I hope you’ll be enlightened and entertained while flipping through the pages. As always, don’t hesitate to send comments, questions or feedback to Publisher@ NASRQ.com. Here’s hoping your autumn is delightful and your pumpkin spice lattes are delectable!

newsbriefs Elysian Fields Offers Two Exciting Events this Month

O

n October 11, 7–9 p.m., astrologer Johnny Barnett leads an exploration of the “Spiritual Anatomy”––the chakra system––which paints a dynamic picture of how we are made and how Spirit moves through the body, informing and defining our lives with purpose. The corresponding symbolism of Astrology and Greek Mythology illustrate the simple yet profound dynamics that comprise us and help us understand our passions, conflicts and dreams as meaningful expressions of Spirit through the matter in our bodies. Barnett will also offer private readings at Elysian Fields on October 12, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. These readings will empower you to access your inner wisdom based on the planetary energies that have influenced you since birth and continue to act upon you in both the present and future. The practice of “Chakraology” is rooted in a realization that seven traditional planets correspond to the seven chakras and manifest within our bodies. On October 26, 7– 9 p.m., Csongor Daniel will reveal how to stop pain within minutes through simple hand moves in his class “Stop Pain Quickly and Naturally.” Learn how to see, feel and manipulate the energy field around your body to induce healing––often without even touching the body. This technique is believed to be the fastest and most powerful energy healing method ever developed. This class includes a free group healing. Location: 1273 S Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Cost per class: $25. Pre-registration required. For more information, call 941-3613006 or visit ElysianFieldsOnline.com.

SRQDC Offers Expanded Services and Welcomes New Practitioners

S

Mindfulness, Food and Body Image Workshop

A

six-week Mindfulness, Food and Body Image workshop will be offered at Sarasota Mindfulness Institute starting October 16. This program is open to women who would like to explore their relationship with food and body image, using mindfulness to bring awareness to unhealthy eating habits and negative thoughts and emotions around body image. Mindfulness can help restore balance to the entire process of eating, as well as help you befriend and cultivate kindness towards yourself, and improve overall health and well-being. Each class includes time for mindfulness meditation instruction and practice related specifically to food and body image. There will also be time for discussion, questions and special topics such as pleasant and unpleasant eating experiences, family history, how you sabotage yourself, and how to nurture yourself around food and body image. The instructor Lily Myers, M.A., is a licensed mental health counselor and mindfulness meditation teacher with over 25 years’ experience leading groups in a variety of settings. She trained with Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program in 1989, and received advanced teacher training at the Center for Mindfulness in 2001. She has a private practice in mindfulness-based psychotherapy in Sarasota. Pre-registration is required, and the class is limited to 12 participants. Location: 3975 Fruitville Rd., Sarasota. This series is offered on Mondays, 6–7:30pm, October 16 through November 20. Cost: $150. For more information or to register, call 603-924-2216, or visit SarasotaMindfulness.org/mindfuleating.html.

RQDC is expanding––not in the typical American physical-size kind of way, but in the we’ve-got-moreto-offer-Sarasota’s-natural-health-community way! Initially, SRQDC was just comprised of Dr. Bill Maecker who is still here, offering an affordable, familycentered and natural approach to health through chiropractic. But now, his practice has grown in the types of services and number of providers. We also have Dr. Kyle Doan who brings different chiropractic aspects to the location. The first is over 25 years of experience practicing in New York state. The second is participation and acceptance of most health insurances policies. If you have a health issue or a health insurance question regarding chiropractic, he’ll have your answer. SRQDC is also a licensed Massage Establishment (MM33713). This is where our favorite local Terry Ganus LMT NMT (MA74821), comes into the picture. Licensed for several years, Ganus is always expanding his education to help our community. This includes extra studies for Neuro-Muscular Therapy, a synergistic treatment with chiropractic care, as well as his current enrollment in the local acupuncture program. Speaking of Chinese Medicine, we now have Rick Jahn, AP, coming on-board too. Jahn brings over 15 years of experience in acupuncture, Chinese medicine, herbal treatment and a blending with functional nutrition supplements. He believes in truly affordable care and offers acupuncture treatments for $30 per session. He also has functional nutrition programs that even include free acupuncture care. Location: 7725 Holiday Dr., Sarasota. For more information, call 941-518-2247.

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

S

uncoast Jin Shin Jyutsu now offers Biomat® treatments in their “Amethyst Room” at Rosemary Court Yoga. The Biomat® is a specially designed 17-layer pad that fits on a massage table. Included in the layers are amethyst and tourmaline crystals. Ancient cultures worldwide had a deep reverence for crystals, believing they were living beings that could aid healing and enhance physical, emotional and spiritual balance. Amethyst is nature’s super conductor that naturally produces healthy far infrared light waves. Far infrared light was discovered by NASA as the safest, most beneficial light wave. It penetrates into the innermost recesses of the body, reducing stress and fatigue. The user sets their desired level of heat from the control panel, and the Biomat’s unique combination of fabrics and crystals generate far infrared rays that are transferred to the body as heat. It also emits negative ions, which are known to clean the air and stimulate cell membranes of the body, helping the cells eliminate waste and toxins. Enjoy the many benefits of the far infrared waves and negative ions in your rejuvenating “Biomat® Nap”––what Michelle Giambra, owner of Suncoast Jin Shin Jyutsu, calls the Biomat® treatment––a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with a private Jin Shin Jyutsu session. Michelle Giambra, LMT, is a Jin Shin Jyutsu Practitioner and Self-Help Instructor with nearly 20 years of experience. She has been voted “Favorite Local Energy Healer” and “Favorite Local Holistic Practitioner.” Giambra is also a Biomat® Distributor, and Biomats® can be purchased through her.

newsbriefs Tibetan Bowl Concert:

Let Vibrations Integrate in Your Body and Let Your Spirit Soar

T

he pure tones of crystal bowls carry through physical objects quite well. Due to the crystalline nature of the human body and its ability to resonate with specific frequencies, we can benefit greatly from these pure tones. They gently move through the body balancing the chakras and re-energize the auric field. The vibrations stimulate and restore harmony between the physical and spiritual planes of the body. One reason the pure tones vibrate our bodies is that it has a natural affinity to quartz. The human body is composed of many crystalline substances, the bones, blood and DNA are crystalline in structure, as well as the liquid crystal-colloidal structure of the brain. Even on a molecular level, our cells contain silica which balances our electromagnetic energies, and this is the same substance found in quartz crystal. The Spirit University will be presenting sound healer Robert Austin, along with special guest Mom Jennie and Gong Artist Ed Russell for a Tibetan bowl concert with over 30 bowls and various sound instruments and several gongs. While attending one of Austin’s concerts, individual experiences can include physical relaxation reduced anxiety, mental clarity and emotional release. The concert will be held on November 9, 7–9 p.m. Seating is limited, so reservations are suggested. Location: 373 Braden Ave., Sarasota. For more information, call 941-544-5874 and visit TheSpiritU.com. Cost: $20.

Hands Are the Mirrors of the Soul

E

verything seen in a hand can be analyzed. Hands are the servants of the human system, so all factors that affect the system affect the hands too. It has been long known and recognized that human hands can express as much by gesture and position as the lips can by speech. Hands ask, invoke, promise, dismiss, threaten, embrace, and express fear, pity, joy, grief or doubts. They mark time. Hands are truly mirrors of the soul. In palmistry, one learns to harness the unlimited powers of insight, creativity and spirituality. It allows the changing mindset to make the emotions––both positive and negative–– work. Palmistry can answer individual questions by unlocking the secrets. It can also help discover one’s hidden talents and abilities. Your task is to find out “who you are.” By participating in a palm reading session, you allow palmistry to open the door to excitement, romance and adventure. Palmistry revives old, forgotten memories, worth a thousand words. On October 18, 7–9 p.m., Master Palmist Myrna Lou Goldbaum will teach a comprehensive session on the “Art of Palmistry.” Goldbaum has been a guest on radio and television programs nationally. She has corresponded with people in 93 countries for palm readings. By late 2015, Goldbaum says she has read an astounding 54,049 palms! Location: 373 Braden Ave., Sarasota. Cost: $39. pirulina platensis, a singlecelled blue-green algae used in supplements, is often taken for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. A new study from Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, in Iran, tested the efficacy of spirulina supplementation on the body mass index (BMI), weight and cholesterol levels of 64 obese adults between the ages of 20 and 50. Subjects were divided into intervention and placebo groups. The intervention group took twice-daily supplements of Spirulina platensis for 12 weeks. BMI, fasting blood samples and lipid profiles were assessed at the beginning and end of the study, and food intake and appetite were reported daily. The scientists found more than double the reductions in both body weight and BMI in the spirulina group, compared to the control group. In addition, reductions in both total cholesterol and appetite were found in the intervention group.

Resveratrol May Help Eye Health

R

esveratrol is a natural substance found in grapes, peanuts, blueberries and other foods that’s known for its heartprotective nature. Researchers believe it may also help promote eye health, including prevention of glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration, but not much is known about its presence in the eyes. Scientists from Tongji Medical College, in China, set out to measure the concentration of trans-resveratrol in the eyes after oral supplementation. Three daily doses of Longevinex, an oral trans-resveratrol-based capsule supplement, was administered to 35 adults prior to eye surgery on one of their eyes, and tissue samples of the conjunctiva, aqueous humor and vitreous humor were taken. Researchers measured the tissues for resveratrol concentration to determine how much of the supplement penetrated the eyes. Resveratrol metabolites were detected in the conjunctiva of 25 of the eyes, indicating that the beneficial substance does pass through the brain.

Music Soothes Pain after Surgery

R

esearchers from the Louis Armstrong Center for Music and Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, in New York City, studied the impact of music therapy on 60 patients that had undergone spinal fusion surgery. Half received a 30-minute music therapy session, along with standard postoperative care, within 72 hours of surgery. The other half received only standard care. The scientists used the visual analog scale to measure pain before and after music therapy in both groups concurrently. The patients receiving music therapy experienced average pain level reductions from 6.2 to 5.09, while the control group averaged slight increases in pain, from 5.2 to 5.87. “The degree of change in the music group is notable for having been achieved by non-pharmacologic means, with little chance of adverse effects,” explains Center Director and study co-author Joanne Loewy. “Pain is subjective and personal, and warrants an individualized approach to care. Certified, licensed music therapists can tailor treatment to each patient’s musical preferences and address their pain level.”

leven counties in New York instituted restrictions on trans fatty acids in restaurants in 2007. Researchers from Yale University School of Medicine used data from the New York State Department of Health statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System and U.S. Census population estimates to determine the impact of these restrictions on the health of the community; they compared the 11 counties that had the restrictions to 25 counties without them. The scientists concluded that hospital heart attack admissions were significantly lower for the 11 counties with the restrictions.

study from the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, examined the impact of regular walking on people with vascular cognitive impairment, the second-most common form of dementia. The ailment occurs when blood vessels become damaged by cardiovascular disease, impeding good blood circulation and making the brain work harder. The researchers scanned the brains and conducted computerized decision-making and attention tests on 38 people with mild, early forms of vascular cognitive impairment. Half of the subjects were asked to participate in supervised, one-hour walking sessions three times per week for a six-month period. The remaining subjects did not walk. After six months, the walking group showed improvements in both blood pressure and brain function, with their brains requiring less effort during the decisionmaking and attention tests.

Save on Holiday Plane Tickets

The easiest way to save money on airfare is by being flexible, because flying on certain days at certain times can be more affordable. Shopping among airports and carriers can also yield dividends, perhaps leaving from one airport and returning to another or combining airlines based on the lowest available rates for legs of the trip. Off hours for flying are very early in the morning or late at night; keep looking for deals right up to the deadline. Airlines send deals and special offers to those that sign up for email alerts. Stay updated on their social media platforms if they release special offers to online followers. To avoid incrementally increasing prices and falling victim to some packagers’ tactics of dynamic pricing and tracking computer searches, clear the browser’s cookies between searches. Try helpful Travel Apps for smartphones; not only are they mobile, they vary in service and scope to suit individual needs. Most are free.

Wildlife Wipeout

Wind Turbines Kill Winged Creatures Wind turbines make cleaner energy, but are dangerous to birds and bats. According to a study in the Wildlife Society Bulletin, approximately 573,000 birds and 888,000 bats are killed annually by wind turbines, which are providing increased wind power capacity nationwide. At one solar power plant in California, an estimated 3,500 birds died in just the plant’s first year of operation. What would help most is offshore turbines and knowledge about migration routes. The safest place for wind turbines is in the ocean, because songbirds and bats don’t migrate over such waters. On land, many songbirds fly at night and can’t see the wind turbines until it’s too late. Once they’ve discovered the unsafe area, they avoid it. Because migration routes are based on availability of food, water and resting areas, birds are forced to fly around the turbines, adding miles to their trip and the burning of more calories. Estimates of just how many bats are dying each year range from the tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands. Radar installations help to keep bats away from the deadly blades. Other remedies include slowing the blades at night to reduce collisions, which has proved to reduce overall wildlife deaths by 73 percent. In 2016 the American Wind Energy Association announced voluntary guidelines to halt turbines during low wind speeds, when bats are most active, to reduce bat fatalities by 30 percent. With two more industry changes, bat fatalities could drop 90 percent: feathering, or turning the blades parallel to the wind so the turbines don’t rotate; and higher cut-in speeds so they don’t rotate in light winds.

A collaborative study published in the journal Pediatrics concludes that toddlers under the age of 2 are more likely to eat French fries than vegetables on any given day; one in four 6-to-11-month-olds and one in five 1-year-olds consumed no vegetables at all. This concerning downward trend began more than a decade ago. The percentage of babies and toddlers eating canned or frozen fruits and vegetables declined by 10 percent between 2005 and 2012, and the consumption of dark, leafy greens among those under 2 has halved since 2005. Dr. Annemarie Stroustrup, an associate professor with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, in New York City, says, “You often have to offer a new food to a toddler up to 10 times before they will eat it.”

Decaying Autumn Leaves Feed Summer Gardens In many parts of the U.S., autumn brings fallen leaves, and the benefits of composting can be extended via leaf molding. “You get new leaves every year. You don’t need to take leaves to a landfill or burn them,” advises Lee Reich, Ph.D., a garden and orchard consultant in New Paltz, New York (LeeReich.com). Digging or tilling leaves into garden beds and containers, using them as mulch, fosters natural soil conditioning, supplies beneficial nutrients and enriches earthworm habitat. PlanetNatural.com estimates that 50 to 80 percent of tree nutrients end up in their leaves. According to FineGardening.com, “Leaf mold prevents extreme fluctuations in soil temperature, keeps the soil surface loose so water penetrates easily, retains soil moisture by slowing water evaporation and stimulates biological activity, creating a microbial environment that helps thwart pests.” One method comprises piling leaves in a corner of the yard or in a wood or wire bin at least three feet wide and tall. Thoroughly dampen the entire pile and let it sit, checking the moisture level occasionally during dry periods and adding water if necessary. Another option is to fill a large plastic bag with leaves and moisten them. Seal the bag, and then cut some holes or slits for airflow. Check every month or two and add water if the leaves are dry. Either way, the decomposition process for most leaves can take six to 12 months; DIYNatural.com reports that some leaves, like oak, can take up to three years to decompose. Hasten the process by mowing the leaves a couple of times before adding them to the pile or bag; turning them over every few weeks with a shovel or garden fork; or covering the contained pile with a plastic tarp to keep the leaves wetter and warmer.

TRANSFORMATIVE

TRAVEL Outer Adventures, Inner Journeys by April Thompson

An open-hearted journey can take unexpected paths. More travelers today are searching for deep and lasting changes in their view of themselves and the world.

Declare Your Intentions

Part of the intention setting is clarifying what we hope to accomplish through making a journey, suggests Nathaniel Boyle, creator of The Travelers podcast and the travel platform Holocene that facilitates community among transformation-seeking travelers. It might be climbing a mountain with our spouse to strengthen a marriage, or taking a cooking class in Italy or a basket weaving workshop in Indonesia to rekindle a sense of fresh input and creative expression.

Cousineau suggests that travelers prepare to open their thinking by reading about the history, culture and geography of a place, and then continue to learn en route by talking to locals for insight rather than relying only on a guidebook. “Make yourself vulnerable. Ask questions and be humble. Talk to your waiter or cab driver about their lives and conditions in their country. Those that become most delighted and transformed by their experiences are the most curious,” observes Cousineau. Anna Pollock, of London, England, founder of Conscious Travel and a sustainable travel expert, elaborates on potential results. “Travelers may see the world and their part in it differently or feel greater clarity, peace, freedom or hope. For some, it’s about insights into their personal purpose. Others may return with a deeper sense of connectedness or feeling of mastery that comes from trying something completely new.” Jake Haupert, of Seattle, owner of Evergreen Escapes International, co-founded the Transformational Travel Council to help people embark on such life-altering journeys, and translate “Aha!” moments on the road into meaningful changes back home. He has witnessed individuals undergo radical shifts from changing careers to becoming parents. One couple was so moved by their experiences on an African safari that they adopted their first child from Kenya.

mimagephotography/Shutterstock.com

Attention and intention are the main ingredients for transformative travel for Phil Cousineau, acclaimed author of The Art of Pilgrimage. “Ask yourself what is motivating the journey: Are you going just to check something off your bucket list because you read about it or are you going because your grandma told you how magical her visit there was in the 1920s? Are you going because you’re at a crossroads in your life, marriage or work?” queries Cousineau. Naming your intention helps open up the heart and psyche for transformation. Cousineau recommends sharing our choice beforehand with a friend or even a casual acquaintance. Writing it down can also unpack those yearnings and understand the pull to a place.

times, and some travelers feel unhappy, unprepared, bored or disappointed,” remarks Cousineau. “But the flip side is that travels can stretch us, just like a medieval rack.” If you have stretch goals, you can build them into an itinerary, advises Haupert, whether it’s getting up the courage to skydive or negotiating a purchase in a foreign street market.

Do Less, Experience More If we truly want to know the secret of soulful traveling, we need to believe there is something sacred waiting to be discovered in virtually every journey. ~Phil Cousineau

Move Beyond Comfort

“Travel can serve as a vehicle for expansive personal growth. Through it, we learn to explore the world and ourselves,” Boyle observes. “When you venture outside the controlled environment of prepackaged trips for tourists to face difficult decisions and confusing and chaotic situations that require problem solving, that’s where real change can occur,” says Haupert. “My 12,000-mile journey from Washington, D.C., to Antarctica was transformative in so many ways,” says journalist Andrew Evans, author of The Black Penguin memoir. “I’m a geographer by training and spent four years studying maps, but I never understood the true size of the world until I traveled across it on a Greyhound bus. I now see the world as much smaller and much more accessible. The trip made me a stronger, more confident person, and less afraid of what other people think of me; it also made me want to keep traveling.” “Travel comes from the word travail, to labor, and trip from tripalium, Latin for a medieval torture rack. Metaphorically, travel can feel like torture at

To heighten experiential awareness while traveling, build fewer to-dos into an itinerary, the experts recommend. “Immerse yourself in a place. Leave time for unplanned explorations, rather than bouncing between destinations without space for spontaneity and restful reflection,” says Haupert. “Also build in time for meditation, yoga, simple relaxation or other intentionally restorative moments in-between the high-intensity peak experiences.” Haupert suggests staging a ceremonial start to a journey, such as a special dinner or bike ride upon arrival. Similarly, Cousineau recommends starting a new journal on every journey, to ceremoniously start anew in one’s thinking. Engaging in ritual can also help awaken the traveler, says Cousineau. He suggests walking in silence as we approach a sacred site, or physically engaging with it, as pilgrims might do when they palm the feet of a Buddha statue or press their forehead to the Wailing Wall. Sacred sites are fertile ground for transformative experiences, says Lori Erickson, an Episcopal deacon, travel writer and author of Holy Rover: Journeys in Search of Mystery, Miracles, and God, a memoir of her trips to a dozen of the world’s holy sites. “So many people have prayed and opened their hearts in a holy place that you can feel the energy,” she says. Erickson suggests that travelers seek out hallowed ground from different traditions, which can help heal divides among people of divergent faiths. “The art and architecture of holy sites are beautiful manifestations of spiritual longing and human creativity. These places have the power to move you, regardless of your own spiritual background.”

Lasting Travel Gifts

When you give while traveling, you often get back even more, says Cousineau. “A pilgrim never travels empty-handed. Bring gifts; even postcards from home can make a meaningful connection.” He recently brought baseball equipment along on a group tour he led to give to kids in baseball-crazed Cuba. Giving appreciation is as important as tangible mementos, he notes. “Gratitude

makes transformation possible; that’s what modern people are longing for, to be touched.” Boyle suggests that finding ways to give back can unlock unique opportunities. Quinn Vanderberg and Jonathon Button, guests on Boyle’s podcast, left stable lives and jobs in California for Nicaragua in 2012 with only their travel bags and a shared dream. Brainstorming a vision for a new life together, the 25-year-old pair

Close Encounters Eager for a transformative adventure without traveling afar? Here are some ideas for exploring cultures and connecting with others closer to home. 4 Attend festivals celebrating varied cultures in your local community. had realized, “We wanted life to be filled with travel, culture and people, and to make an impact along the way,” says Vanderburg. “We went knowing we wanted to create a social venture, but first wanted to see what was really needed by the community.” They went on to partner with local educational nonprofits and artisans to launch Life Out of the Box, a line of clothing and accessories modeled after Toms’ “Buy one, give one” business model. For every product sold, the entrepreneurs donate school supplies to a child in need. Since 2012, the project has expanded to also support kids in Guatemala, Kenya, Mexico and Morocco.

Drive Home Transformation

Starting with a moment of reflection before departing a place, take advantage of a trip’s afterglow to recall insights learned, gel memories, share insights and move to make changes stick. Haupert sees this as a good time to develop an action plan to “express gratitude for the journey and create a framework for your homecoming.” Then, take a day to reflect upon returning home before jumping back into work or other obligations, internalizing your experience and integrating your “traveler self” back into normalcy. It might involve a trip to the spa, an

afternoon of journaling or organizing trip photos, suggests Haupert. “Resist the urge to check emails the minute the plane touches down or start planning the next trip. Take time to remember the journey and see your home turf with fresh eyes,” adds Cousineau. The returned pilgrim has a responsibility to memorialize the journey, an ancient tradition of Judeo-Christian and Islamic faiths, advises Cousineau. The San Francisco writer traveled with a group on foot from Louisville, Kentucky, to Thomas Merton’s Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani, near Bardstown, Kentucky, to celebrate the legacy of Merton and Mahatma Gandhi. One of the women inked a footprint from each of 100-plus travelers, sewing them into a quilt to commemorate the pilgrimage. Chronicling the journey can be as simple as a dinner party with friends to share what we have learned, says Cousineau, but suggests that travelers engage attendees to also contribute their own stories and reflections. “We have a choice upon returning; do nothing and just let that experience fade or own it for ourselves,” concurs Boyle. “It’s incumbent to extract the meaning of our experiences and find a way to express them, whether through a photo series, article, painting or video. The traveler’s ‘third act’ of creativity after preparation and execution is how we process change.”

SOUL SHINE by Marianne Williamson

O

ur deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?” Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. Bouncing, Leaping and Lunging Our Way to Bone Health by Kathleen Barnes

Success in the quest for stronger bones is possible at any age.

Start and Stay Young

“Peak bone strength is reached by the age of 30, so it’s vital for young people to engage in dynamic impact movement through their teen years and 20s,” says Sherri Betz, chair of the American Physical Therapy Association bone health group, a doctor of physical therapy and geriatric-certified specialist with a private practice in Santa Cruz, California. Engaging in sports during our youthful developing years helps build strong, wide and dense bones that will carry us well into old age, literally giving us a firmer base to stand on. It’s paramount to encourage children and young people to be physically active and for us all to continue with athletic activities throughout adulthood to preserve the bone health peak we reach at age 30.

“Bone responds to exercise much like muscle,” explains Larry Tucker, Ph.D., professor of exercise sciences at Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah. “Bone doesn’t grow, per se, but like muscle, it does get denser and stronger according to the stresses and strains put on it.” “The key is to put a heavy load on bones to stimulate them to grow,” Hawkins notes. Standing exercises are recom-

Best Bone Test The most common way of testing bone density is a DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan. The result is called a T-score and is one case where a zero is perfect. A score of +1.0 to -1.0 is considered normal. A score between -1.0 and -2.5 is considered osteopenia, or weakened bones. A score lower than -2.5 indicates some level of osteoporosis. The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends bone density testing for women and men older than 65 and 70, respectively, and those that are petite, prone to breaking bones or have other risk factors. mended, because the bones most likely to benefit from strengthening exercise are 30 targeted leg and hip bones, says Tucker. “Surprising the bone is your best bet,” points out Betz. “Don’t do the same things over and over again at the same time, either repetitive exercises like running or weight lifting or consistent combinations; even high-intensity exercise can diminish the effects.” The most highly recommended exercises involve those that require changing directions, bouncing and leaping—from basketball to lively dances, and even some intense yoga postures. Hopping and jumping are probably the best way to strengthen bones, but must be done in the proper way, according to Tucker and others. Research by Tucker’s team published in the American Journal of Health Promotion studied the effects of jumping on hip bone density in premenopausal women. It may seem counterintuitive, but Tucker reports that most benefits are gained from jumping as high as possible, resting 30 seconds and repeating up to 10 times twice a day in intervals at least eight hours apart. “If you jump continuously, the exercise loses effectiveness pretty quickly,” he says. Those that enjoy circuit training should do something else during the 30-second rests between repetitions, Tucker advises. Because it’s the jolt of jumping that stimulates bone strength, using a mini-trampoline or another cushioning device to lessen impact on the body won’t increase bone density.

Yoga for Bones Yoga doesn’t involve bouncing or jumping for the most part, but it can be helpful in maintaining strong bones, says Sherri Betz, a Santa Cruz, California, physical therapist and Pilates and yoga instructor. “Poses, including the tree, chair, warrior, triangle, half moon and sun salute, need to be as dynamic as possible and focus on leg strengthening and spine extension.

Choosing a Chiropractor How to Find the Best One by Marlaina Donato

C

hiropractic medicine is known for its non-surgical approach to chronic pain and other musculoskeletal conditions, but also has much more to offer. However, finding the right doctor can be as daunting as shopping for a comfortable pair of shoes. Here, three reputable practitioners talk about securing individualized care and getting the most out of chiropractic.

Address Specific Needs

Clarifying the desired outcome is helpful, because some clients are just looking for a quick fix to reduce pain, while others may be seeking overall better health, lasting wellness and an improved quality of life. “Due to insurance issues, we’ve become known as pain doctors, but that’s not the full extent of chiropractic,” explains Dr. Michelle Robin, owner of Your Wellness Connection and the educational DrMichelleRobin.com website, in Shawnee, Kansas. “Also, you can see more than one chiropractor, as each has their own strength.” Dr. Michael Aho, of Crosstown Chiropractic, in Chicago, agrees. “Chiropractic care encompasses many 34

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

styles, so one of the biggest variables is the type of treatment the doctor uses. Most offices commonly treat neck, mid-back and low back pain. If you have a specific shoulder, knee or foot problem, you may want to find a doctor that frequently treats those issues. If you are pregnant, choose a chiropractor that has experience working with pregnant women.” “There are more than 140 different chiropractic techniques. Some are light touch, while others are aggressive. Some are hands-on and some use instruments for adjusting. It’s important that the doctor’s approach resonates with your nature,” advises Dr. Jackie St.Cyr of the Innate Chiropractic Healing Arts Center, in Houston. Robin advises that sitting in a doctor’s reception room to just observe and trusting our intuition is helpful before moving forward with a consultation.

Ask Questions

First, find out if a chiropractor has embraced either a conventional medical or holistic model, and then delve more deeply to find the right approach and level of care. “Ask how long a doctor

www.nasrq.com

has practiced and their governing philosophy. Do they treat the full spine or focus on the point of pain, and what range of techniques do they apply? You want them to know your spine before they adjust it; make sure they conduct a new patient exam,” suggests St.Cyr. An exam may include a thermography scan and X-rays. Helpful questions include what to expect during the initial visit, recommended frequency of treatment, the desired doctor’s office hours and how treatment might benefit a particular condition. Because most chiropractic offices offer compatible treatments, also ask about complementary modalities such as acupuncture, massage therapy, heat therapy, and interferential current therapy using minute electrical pulses for deep tissue pain relief.

Be Consistent

“You shouldn’t expect instant results,” says Aho. “You’ll benefit the most if you don’t wait too long after first experiencing symptoms of a problem before starting treatment, and are consistent with your treatment.” Being proactive can foster good results. St.Cyr concurs, stating, “When patients follow their chiropractor’s recommended routine of regular corrective care, they get the best results. Be consistent with visits and do your customized spinal exercises; they’ve been proven to work.” Robin expounds that not following through with homecare is a common pitfall for patients. “Like dental care, you always need to do something for your spine every day, be it stretching, other exercise or good nutrition.” She notes that everyone’s response to chiropractic is different. “Be realistic. If you’ve experienced injuries or accidents, it will take longer, and your healing might look different from that of someone else that is free of injuries and follows a healthier diet. Sometimes people give up on chiropractic instead of finding a chiropractor that is good for them. You wouldn’t give up going to the dentist, and the same should apply to chiropractic care.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer, author and multimedia artist. Connect at MarlainaDonato.com.

Physical issues arise in the nervous system. In chiropractic, we refer to these as subluxations which alter information flow through the body. So, in receiving chiropractic care and removing these subluxations, the body resets its goals. Muscles become stronger and more flexible. Internal organs receive proper stimulation which results in enhanced breathing and digestion. Hormones can return to balance, and anything impacted by the nervous system––which is everything––can improve.

Beyond Just the Bones: Q&A Round-Up with Local Chiropractors by Mary-Elizabeth Schurrer

A

mericans are inundated with a “quick-fix” mentality. In fact, our culture is organized around this idea––and our healthcare system is too. Conventional medicine offers a prescription for just about every form of ailment or discomfort we might experience. Muscle tension? Joint stiffness? Migraine? There’s a pill for that! Neck spasm? Backache? A topical ointment should reduce the swelling. Within this fast-paced model, a brief jaunt to the pharmacy is often the antidote of choice. The drawback to that approach, however, is that it bandages the symptom, while masking a deeper-rooted issue beneath the surface. If the internal cause of external pain goes untreated, a permanent solution cannot be reached. And that’s where alternative medicine comes in. This holistic method focuses on the origin of pain to restore not just comfort, but well-being, throughout the body. Chiropractic is one such treatment grounded in the idea that long-term healing trumps a quick-fix, and to shed more insight on this modality, I spoke with three local practitioners––Dr. William Maecker, SRQDC; Dr. Eric Winder, GentleBay Chiropractic; and Dr. Michele Battaglia, Natural Health Improvement Center of Osprey. Below are the highlights from our conversation.

Dr. Eric Winder: I’m going to answer this from the perspective of soft-tissue focused care. Your fibrous soft-tissue, called fascia, contains millions of nerve endings. Many of these nerves are for position sense, and restricted fascia can disturb that position sense, causing joint misalignment and instability. Restrictions in fascia can also affect posture, coordination and balance. Chiropractic treatment that relieves fascial restrictions to restore joint stability and alignment makes sense when you realize how important these issues are and how many problems can be helped. Of course, some people choose preventive care to address these problems before they become painful. In addition, athletes often use chiropractic to optimize their abilities and prevent small “glitches” in joint motion or coordination that could affect their performance. Dr. Michele Battaglia: A chiropractic adjustment helps to align the spine and, therefore, alleviates nerve pressure. Irritation in the nerves might cause pain or contribute to other symptoms in the body. Organs, arms and legs are controlled by nerves, so getting adjusted regularly keeps the energy flowing in the nerves, so they can communicate with the brain. Our nervous systems allow us to breathe, digest, speak and more. People often tell me, “I am lucky that I haven’t needed to see a chiropractor.” But there might not be any noticeable symptoms from a misaligned spine. Overtime, our spinal vertebrae can begin to degenerate if they’re not in the right position. As a result, difficulty walking, turning, bending or standing could become apparent. The spine wants to be stable, and in order to achieve that, the body will fuse the bones together for stability. The stressors our bodies experience might be physical, emotional or chemical. We are constantly bombarded by toxins in our environment and in our food. These factors also contribute to stress on the spine.

Natural Awakenings: Why is chiropractic a beneficial adjunct to NA: What specific types of medical issues one’s healthcare plan? or concerns does this modality address? Dr. William Maecker: On a large scale, we have to look at two ideas from Western science: homeostasis, which describes the body’s need for internal balance, and the nervous system, which controls all other aspects of the body through information flow.

Dr. Maecker: Because we live in a pain-basis-of-health society––and pain is the compression of a nerve––this symptom is often easily treated. Chiropractic addresses common sources of pain headaches, sinus issues, ear aches, muscle natural awakenings

soreness and limited range-of-motion. But this modality approaches them as biomechanical problems from a deeper root cause. Through chiropractic, the body achieves a state of natural realignment which can resolve these biomechanical problems. During the course of care, I’ve seen people express resolution of bladder problems, impaired vision, erectile dysfunction and other issues I never expected. Dr. Winder: Fascial restrictions can be anywhere in the body, so problems with stability and alignment can occur in any joint, from head to toe. Proper treatment of these issues can help a variety of conditions, from migraines and neck pain, to tennis elbow and hip bursitis, and finally to knee arthritis and heel pain. Lower back pain is, of course, among the most common problems successfully addressed with this kind of treatment. Irritable bowel, reflux and vertigo can also respond well to soft-tissue based chiropractic treatment, and we’ve had success in treating patients for unexplained chest or pelvic pain once the more serious medical issues are ruled out. Dr. Battaglia: In our office, we address not only neck pain, lower back pain and headaches, but we assess the body as a whole through Nutrition Response Testing. This involves muscle testing, or applied kinesiology, which allows us to find hidden sources of symptoms. We are then able to achieve the proper support for the body.

NA: What is the recommended frequency of receiving chiropractic treatments? Dr. Maecker: I am almost exclusively outside the insurance industry, so I have the ability to treat each person individually. Because every person is different, every person has different goals and responds differently to treatments. So, we work together to create a plan for those goals. For someone who presents with extreme lower back pain––just the symptom, no deeper issue––the pain usually disappears in three visits. But for someone who hasn’t received care before and wants to actually heal the root cause, then move into a state of health maintenance, that’s a longer process. We adjust the frequency based on how well the body responds to treatments. Overall though, I am conservative on the time between visits because I want the body to function as long as possible in the interim. Dr. Winder: The frequency of treatment depends on the specific problems being treated. Someone with acute lower back pain might need to be seen two or three times the first week. Someone with chronic neck pain, which is not severe, might only need one visit per week, along with home exercises and stretches to help their progress. I have patients with no pain who want to correct their posture, and we only see them every three to four weeks while they do home exercises between visits. We also have patients who come in for wellness care or athletic “tune-ups,” and that frequency varies from once every three weeks to twice a year. Each patient is unique, so there is no “cookie cutter” approach at our office. We give patients the care they need. 36

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

www.nasrq.com

Dr. Battaglia: This differs from person to person, depending on their needs and goals. Treatments are generally more frequent in the beginning of a care plan. I compare routine chiropractic adjustments to wearing a dental retainer which maintains the alignment of the teeth once braces are removed. In the same way, maintenance adjustments keep the spine in alignment once the initial care plan is completed. The frequency of chiropractic maintenance care depends on a person’s lifestyle and stress.

NA: Why does chiropractic tend to face skepticism, and how are you combatting this? Dr. Maecker: Chiropractic is a different view of health and healing than what most are familiar with. People often don’t understand the scope or power of the nervous system. Some chiropractors present a convoluted message of who we are and what we do. We still experience obstacles from the pre-1980 American Medical Association (AMA) policy that deemed it unethical for members to exchange patients with chiropractors. We live in a Western science-based world in which a one-to-one double-blind study outweighs 100,000 individual patient testimonials. In addition, we live in a world of instant gratification where people expect total healing after just one treatment, and they’re disappointed when those results aren’t immediately achieved. The key to combating this skepticism is through education. We need to explain where the misconceptions came from, what caused them to originate and the reason they’re inaccurate. For example, because we address the nervous system, Western science is finally catching up and proving that chiropractic ideas and concepts are valid. So, we must continue educating people through truth and clarity. Dr. Winder: I don’t encounter much skepticism about chiropractic to the degree it existed even 10 years ago. More and more studies demonstrate the value of chiropractic. For example, The Joint Commission, which accredits almost 90 percent of U.S. hospitals, recently recommended chiropractic as a means for hospitals to offer non-drug pain relief. Our military chiropractors are now giving 14,000 treatments to armed services members each month. While there are still pockets of skepticism, it is fading. I have medical doctors as patients, and I often receive referrals from them. In fact, most of my patients have been referred by trusted healthcare professionals, so skepticism is not much of an issue for our office. Dr. Battaglia: Skepticism mainly comes from misinformation. I provide free workshops in our office to educate the public. The schedule for these workshops can be found on our website under the “events” tab.

NA: Why did you decide to start practicing this form of alternative medicine in particular?

Dr. Maecker: Again, I am outside the norm here because I came from a medical upbringing and background. A few months after my divorce, my best friend’s marriage ended too, and we began discussing how to refocus our lives. His father was a chiropractor, so he suggested, “Let’s become doctors,” to which I responded, “Okay!” We both applied and were accepted into chiropractic school. He eventually took another path, but I pressed forward, and during that process, I learned that my understanding of chiropractic was wrong. Instead of those misconceptions, I found a view and attitude toward health that meshed with mine. I am exceptionally grateful for that revelation because, otherwise, I would still be existing in the parameters of a healthcare system I don’t agree with––a healthcare system that ignored my own physical issues. Dr. Winder: I am healthy now, but I was disabled at age 21 by severe chronic headaches. I visited about a dozen conventional medical doctors, including highly trained specialists, without success. Finally, a chiropractor named Dr. Jacqueline Paltis helped me start regaining my health. However, that’s not what caused me to enroll in chiropractic school––it was the dozens of patients I met in her waiting room who had found help nowhere else, but started to regain health under her care. I wanted to help others that same way. Dr. Battaglia: I had been seeking answers to my own health crisis for years. I suffered from eight migraines per month, fungal rashes, food allergies and fatigue. I couldn’t even keep my eyes open throughout the day. I have since become licensed and certified in all the techniques that helped me get better. Now people can’t believe I am 39 years old. I feel better now than I ever have before. My purpose is to help people look and feel better without the use of drugs and surgery.

NA: When choosing a chiropractor, what qualities should a patient look for? Dr. Maecker: Find a practitioner who resonates with you. For instance, I educate my patients, so they understand the reason we’re doing everything we do. I empathize with their pain because I’ve experienced almost everything they’re going through, and I’ve rehabbed from a number of issues. I adapt a combination of techniques to maximize their comfort, and I treat the whole body––down to fingers and toes. In addition, I’m always honest, so if I don’t think I can help, or I believe there are better treatment options, I’ll express that. A patient’s health is most important. Dr. Winder: You can check with the Florida Department of Health to make sure their license is in good standing, and if disciplinary actions have occurred. Beyond that, credentials don’t count as much to me as do results. I won’t make a referral to another doctor––whether chiropractor, medical doctor or another practitioner––until I am aware of their ability to make a correct diagnosis and give effective treatment. My advice is to ask around to get more insight on which practitioners have been helpful in addressing your type of

problem? Most people choose a doctor based on cost and convenience, both of which are important. But first of all, when inquiring about a doctor, ask the following questions: “Did they help you?” “Did the results last?” “Did they know where to refer you if they could not help?” Dr. Battaglia: All chiropractors must be licensed in order to practice. The Florida Department of Health provides a website to verify the licenses of all healthcare professionals (APPSMQA.doh.state.fl.us). The credentials of a chiropractor are Doctor of Chiropractic or Chiropractic Physician which are used interchangeably. In the state of Florida, all chiropractors must complete four years of undergraduate school and four years of graduate school for the Doctoral program. Many chiropractors then continue their education. They might choose to specialize in certain fields, which require further credentials. My primary focus is nutrition. Others might choose to specialize in sports rehab or pediatrics, for instance. There are a wide variety of holistic services a chiropractor can offer. Dr. William Maecker received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life University, and is certified in Physiotherapy by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. He is actively licensed in Florida, and his practice SRQDC is located at 7725 Holiday Drive, Sarasota. Dr. Maecker also provides nutritional and dietary consulting. His office is equipped with E-Stim ultrasound technology, and both a Licensed Massage Therapist and Licensed Acupuncture Physician are on-site for soft tissue bodywork. For more information and to schedule an appointment, call 941-5182247 or visit SRQDC.com. Eric Winder, DC, has been practicing chiropractic for 20 years, having focused specifically on fascial treatment and soft tissue therapies for the past 17 years. His practice GentleBay Chiropractic is located at 3131 S Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Dr. Winder relieves pain and restores alignment with soft-tissue therapies which don’t involve forceful manipulation. Fermented Foods Revival Rediscover Probiotic-Rich Foods by Judith Fertig

Colorful jars of fermented Korean kimchee, Indian chutney, German sauerkraut and bottles of kombucha line many grocery store shelves today. We’re in the midst of a fermented food revival.

Grassroots Groundswell

“I grew up in New York City as the grandson of immigrants from Belarus, and sauerkraut and pickles were common foods I always loved, but neither my grandparents nor anyone else I knew made them,” says Sandor Katz. This Woodbury, Tennessee, writer who travels the world giving related workshops is credited with bringing fermented foods back into the limelight. He explains, “I am self-taught and learned to ferment by experimentation. It was that first successful batch of sauerkraut

that sparked my obsession. Kirsten recalls. “Eventually, we started our own small farmstead fermentation company.” Christopher explains that the combination of salt and shredded or chopped vegetables can launch the production of probiotic lactic acid bacteria that preserves the food and drives off “bad bacteria”. Jennifer McGruther, who lives in the Pacific Northwest, is the author of The Nourished Kitchen cookbook, an offshoot of her blog of the same name. Her first batch of fermented food was yogurt. Now she visits her local farmers’ market every Saturday before spending Sunday prepping foods for the rest of the week. “Traditional foods like fermented vegetables, yogurt or kombucha don’t take long to prepare; they take time to culture, but it’s so rewarding,” she says.

How Much Is Enough?

Fermented foods offer a variety of positive effects on health. “If you’re consuming a diet rich in fermented foods, you’re essentially bathing your GI tract in healthy, food-related organisms,” says food research scientist Robert Hutkins, Ph.D., a professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Fermented foods with live probiotics can also improve brain function, according to a study in the journal Gastroenterology. Fermented foods are meant to be eaten as condiments, not consumed in large quantities. Overdoing such intake might cause bloating, cramping and other digestion problems. Dr. Leonard Smith, a gastrointestinal and vascular surgeon and medical advisor for the University of Miami Department of Integrative Medicine, recommends “a half-cup of cultured vegetables or two ounces of your favorite probiotic liquid per day to start.” He says it’s possible to eventually work up to having a serving of cultured vegetables and probiotic liquids at every meal, or possibly as a between-meal snack. Christopher Shockey adds, “We don’t see these foods as a ‘medicine’ to be eaten daily because you have to force yourself; instead, we see it as a fun, delicious, easy, healthful addition to mealtime.” Judith Fertig writes cookbooks and foodie fiction from Overland Park, KS (JudithFertig.com).

Cover with a lid or a cloth, and allow it to ferment five to seven days, checking periodically to ensure the salsa is still submerged below the water line. If any mold forms on the surface, simply scoop it out. It won’t spoil the salsa unless it gets deeper inside the crock. (It may form where the mixture meets the air, but it rarely forms deeper.) After one week, put the salsa in jars or a bowl, cover and place in the fridge, where it usually lasts up to a year.

the extras to eat, give to friends or add to compost. 1 quart (or liter) filtered water ½ cup raw, unsalted cashews 1 tsp coconut sugar, pure maple syrup or agave nectar 1 Tbsp kefir grains (a natural starter, available at health food stores and online) Mandarin sections for garnish (optional) Use a blender to blend the water, cashews and coconut sugar (or maple syrup or agave nectar) until it’s smooth and creamy. Pour the cashew milk into a 1½- to 2-quart glass jar, making sure it is less than two-thirds full. Add the kefir grains, stir and then place the cap on the jar. Leave the jar at room temperature for 24 to 48 hours, gently shaking it periodically. The cashew milk will become somewhat bubbly, then will begin to coagu-

late and separate; shake it to remix the kefir or scoop out the thicker curds and use them like soft cheese or sour cream. Refrigerate up to one week. When ready to serve, pour the kefir into a glass and garnish the rim with mandarin orange sections, if desired.

Fermented Chopped Salad Yields: about 6 cups Unlike other salads, this version stores for many months in the fridge. Serve on its own or toss it in vinaigrette and serve over brown rice for a quick and nutritious rice bowl dinner. 1 radish, finely chopped ½ small onion, finely chopped 1 turnip, chopped into ½-inch chunks 1 carrot, chopped into ½-inch chunks 3 small apples, chopped into ½-inch chunks Handful of green beans, cut into 1-inch lengths 1 rutabaga, chopped into ½-inch chunks 1 to 2 grape leaves, kale leaves or other large leafy greens (optional) 3 Tbsp unrefined fine or 6 Tbsp unrefined coarse sea salt 1 quart (or liter) filtered water In a medium bowl, mix the radish, onion, turnip, carrot, apples, green beans and rutabaga; then transfer to a small crock. Place the grape leaves or other leafy greens on top of the chopped ingredients to help hold them under the brine; then weigh the mix down with food-safe weights or a jar or bowl of water. In a pitcher or large measuring cup, dissolve the salt in the water, stirring if necessary to dissolve the salt. Pour the brine over the salad, cover with a lid or cloth, and let ferment for one week. Remove the covering, weights and grape leaves or other leafy greens. Dish out into jars or a bowl, cover and refrigerate, where the salad should last six to 12 months.

National Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine Day

by Christina Captain, DAOM, MSAOM, MSHN, MA

A

cupuncture and Oriental Medicine Day is observed annually on October 24, since its initial commemoration on October 24, 2002. This observance is part of an effort designed to increase public awareness of the progress, promise, and benefits of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine as a whole.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture, a single modality in the complete medical model of Oriental Medicine, is considered to be between 4,000 and 6,000 years old. The World Health Organization recognizes over 43 common disorders that Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine can effectively treat.

These include respiratory disorders such as asthma and allergies, musculoskeletal disorders such as joint pain and arthritis, gastrointestinal disorders such as acid reflux and irritable bowel syndrome, gynecological disorders such as painful menstruation and menopausal symptoms, infertility, urinary disorders such as incontinence and sexual dysfunction, psychological disorders such as depression, skin disorders, endocrine disorders, and complimentary treatment to chemo and radiation therapies. This list only represents some of the disorders that can be effectively addressed with Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

One aspect of Traditional Chinese Medical theory, on which acupuncture is based, is the theory of Qi (chi) and meridians. Qi is the vital substance that animates the human body to keep all of its systems and organs functioning properly. Qi must be in ample supply and must flow smoothly without obstruction through the meridians. Meridians are pathways that Qi flows through. Each meridian is connected to an organ and has several

branches throughout the body. Imagine these meridians as streams off of a larger river, and that water flowing through the streams is actually the Qi flowing through the meridian pathways. Imagine that trees lining the banks of the streams fell and blocked the flow of the water through the stream. If we think of this image as the Qi being blocked, then we have a stagnation or stoppage of the flow of Qi. This stagnation of Qi translates into pain or organ system dysfunction. Acupuncture and herbs allow us to manipulate the flow of Qi in the body, thus relieving pain and restoring organ system dysfunction. For example, if you have an injury to your neck from a car accident, and it results in pain, then theoretically the Qi in your neck is blocked, and an acupuncture treatment should help to relieve the pain by restoring the smooth flow of Qi. A more scientific theory on acupuncture’s mechanism of action is based on a series of responses by the nervous, hormonal and vascular systems of the body. Common acupuncture effects include the secretion and regulation of neuro-hormones such as serotonin, dopamine, enkephalin and endorphins. The production of these substances creates a balance at the biochemical level of the body, and can imbue a feeling of peace and wellness. There are now several well-reviewed studies that support acupuncture’s efficacy in the treatment of low backpain, opioid addiction and chemotherapy induced neuropathy. In fact, Acupuncture works so well that Physical Therapists are trying to include it in their practices. It’s called dry needling (except it looks much like Acupuncture), and the current training consists of a weekend course. If you are concerned about the public safety of this, please write, call or visit your state legislator’s office to express your concern.

What Are the Credentials of Acupuncture Physicians?

In the state of Florida, Acupuncture physicians are required to complete a five academic year course of study after

meeting the mandatory prerequisites for acceptance, resulting in a Master’s degree. After completing the required didactic and clinical coursework, four National Board examination tests must be passed and malpractice insurance obtained before a license will be issued. Chapter 457 of the Florida code describes Acupuncture physicians as primary care practitioners who are able to order and utilize laboratory testing. Acupuncture physicians are regulated under the same federal laws and rules in regard to the healthcare privacy act. Specialization in the form of a Doctoral degree is now the terminal degree in the field. Individuals with a Doctoral degree utilize the initials DAOM.

Who has Received Acupuncture?

Nearly one in 10 adults (approximately 20 million people) in the United States has received Acupuncture, and 60% indicate they would readily consider Acupuncture as a treatment option according to the findings of a national survey by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Nearly half (48%) of the individuals surveyed, who had received Acupuncture, reported they were either “extremely satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their treatment.

Why Not?

The truth is that you miss all the shots you do not attempt to make. So, why not give Acupuncture a try? You have nothing to lose. Seek out qualified licensed practitioners and make complementary medicine part of your health maintenance regimen. NCCAOM.org is the national accrediting body for Acupuncture Physicians. Log onto their website to find a board-certified practitioner in your area. Dr. Christina Captain is nationally board-certified by the National Commission for Certification in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). She is the lead practitioner at the Family Healing Center which she founded in 2000. She earned her Masters degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the Academy of Chinese Healing Arts, Sarasota. In 2014, she earned a Master of Science degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport, CT, and holds a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine with focus in integrative medicine and pain management from AOMA Graduate School of Integrative Medicine, Austin, TX. Prior to becoming a practitioner of Oriental Medicine, Dr. Captain earned a Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology and Communication Disorders from the University of Central Florida. She remains an actively licensed speech pathologist in the state of Florida. Dr. Captain is also an expert Feng Shui practitioner and teacher who studied under Nancilee Wydra of the Feng Shui Institute of America, before originating her own style, Essential Balance Feng Shui. Since this discipline is a branch of Oriental Medicine, she often blends Feng Shui principles into her treatment plans.

Mindful Exercises This meditation exercise is recommended by the Holistic Life Foundation to help kids slow down, relax, de-stress or clear their heads:

Lyashenko Ego/Shutterstock.com

Sit comfortably with one hand on your belly, with your head, neck and spine in alignment. Breathe through your nose. As you inhale, feel your belly expand and pause for a second. Then, exhale and feel the belly fall. Repeat for 10 breaths.

This mindfulness instruction is excerpted from a starter lesson at MindfulSchools.org:

Mindfulness is noticing what is happening in the present moment. It can help calm us when we are angry, sad or frustrated. It can help us notice when we are happy or grateful and also to focus, whether in school or in sports. It’s important to let our bodies be very still. When that happens, it gets very quiet. When we have still and quiet bodies, that’s what we call our mindful bodies. Now, let’s close our eyes and just sit like this for one minute.

Kids Calm Themselves with Meditation by April Thompson

S

choolchildren are learning the calming effect of tuning into their minds and bodies through a pioneering program in Baltimore, Maryland, that’s replacing time outs and school detentions with mindful moments. Trained staff—including many former students—teach yoga, mindfulness practices, meditation, centering and breath work that empower kids to resolve conflicts peacefully. Brothers Atman and Ali Smith and friend Andres Gonzalez founded the nonprofit Holistic Life Foundation (HLF) in 2001 in response to the pressing need to help kids living in challenging urban environments better manage

stress, anger and other heightened emotions. Today, the organization is sowing the seeds of mindfulness with some 7,500 students a week across 18 Baltimore-area schools, usually beginning through daylong, school-wide interventions and afterschool programs supporting targeted populations. Frustrated kids cool off and center themselves through breathing exercises and meditation in the Mindful Moment Room in the HLF flagship Robert W. Coleman Elementary School. “Sometimes when I get mad, I just breathe deep. I picture being in a certain place I like and I just stop being mad… I think of being a bigger

person and doing something maybe a wise man would do,” advises one fifth-grade participant. “When we had to take a big test, before I took it and in the middle, I took deep breaths to stay calm and finish the test. When everybody around you is making a lot of noises, you just try to tune them out and be yourself, do your breathing,” says another fifth-grader. The training starts with educators learning mindfulness techniques both to help their students and also manage their own stress in the classroom. “The

program was a fantastic experience,” says Lori Gustovson, a teacher at Baltimore’s Lincoln Elementary School. “We integrated the exercises into our daily schedules, helping many students and teachers focus their attention and regulate emotions such as anxiety, anger and frustration. We are a better school because of the time they spent in our classrooms teaching us the beauty of paying attention to breath, movement and each other,” she observes. Participating schools have reported fewer fights, better attendance and higher grades, among other benefits, according to Ali Smith, all results backed by independent research. Recent studies in schools from San Francisco to Columbus, Ohio, have shown that teaching kids mindfulness practices can heighten attentiveness, self-control and empathy, while reducing stress, hyperactivity and depression, and improving academic performance. The kids also apply their newfound skills at home. “To take ownership of the practice and understand the benefits, you have to know how to explain it, so we use a reciprocal teaching model,” says Ali. “We teach the kids to say, ‘Mom, Dad, you look stressed; can you take a breather with me?’” Martin, a Lincoln Elementary student, was pleased to report, “I went to my house and taught my mom how to do all the things you guys taught us.” Virginia, another student, noted, “This morning I got mad at my dad, but then I remembered to breathe, and then I didn’t shout.” Other schools are following suit. Mindful Schools began in 2007 as a single-school program in Oakland, California, and then expanded to support online and in-person courses and a network of mindful educators spanning all 50 states and more than 100 countries. The David Lynch Foundation funds efforts to bring transcendental meditation to underserved kids in classrooms like the Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School, in Queens, New York; Wilson High School, in Portland, Oregon; and Wayzata West Middle School, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, among others. Storytelling. Humans learn best when seeing and hearing stories. Facts don’t arouse us as much as narratives and full-body experiences do. Bombarding people with facts won’t create desired change. We must be inspired to act on the knowledge.

8 Creating Community 15 Ways to Craft a Circle of Caring by Linda Buzzell

I

n facing up to today’s often degrading environmental, economic, political, social and hyper-individualistic cultural conditions, we instinctively know that survival requires coming together to effect constructive change. Here are proven approaches to community building that work.

People that feel seen and known are more likely to stay involved.

4

Provide food and drink. Traditional societies have always taken hospitality seriously. Having people bring items to add to the collective feast is better than catering.

Elders. Shared history, respect and affection are vital to belonging. Adults coping with a high-stress, industrialized culture might tend to find elders’ stories slow-moving and boring, but they are a critical resource for our collective survival. Beware of the “star from afar” syndrome that posits outsiders as experts, rather than honoring and developing our own community resources, which won’t disappear at the end of an event.

9

Gifts and sharing. As we focus on creating a sharing society versus a gimme culture, it’s nice to give small gifts such as a plant or garden flower, organic seeds or regifted items to event attendees. It’s a simple way to help everyone feel valued, appreciated and welcomed. The key is keeping events local, simple and created by the community for the community. Many hands make light work, and some of the best community events cost the host little, while everyone involved brings their own chair or blanket, serving ware and potluck dish.

Build a campfire. Whether literal or metaphoric, create a clear, focused attraction that draws people into a circle.

Connect with nature and the seasons. Tying gatherings into what’s happening seasonally with all life forms is a traditionally effective way of fostering community. Welcome each person. Either designate greeters or go around the circle welcoming and acknowledging each participant before proceeding with the event’s main activity.

Ceremony, ritual and the sacred. Deep in our collective human memory lie countless spring and harvest festivals, ceremonial or religious events, meals and celebrations that included a strong sense of passage, initiation and the sacredness of all life. Use one as a springboard to add meaning to a contemporary gathering.

Collective problem solving. People bond into a community when they participate in solving a real-world community problem, helping someone in need or addressing a situation that demands a community

www.nasrq.com

Shopping. People have been bonding through meeting others in the marketplace since ancient times. Sales or silent auctions are popular when the money paid becomes a gift to the community. A little excitement. Raffles and door prizes add fun as long as any money raised goes into the common coffers as a gift to all. Child care. Children provide a necessary source of untamed energy and entertainment for any gathering. Multigenerational exchanges also help form and

shape them through exposure to role models and life education, even if they might not feel engaged at the time.

13 14 15

Transportation. Facilitating carpools and providing transportation for those without cars or unable to walk builds community even before the event starts. Dance and body movement. Modern society makes us sit a lot. Physical action connects us in a way nothing else can.

Beauty and music. Our eyes and ears are portals to the soul and spirit of the human psyche. Even a simple drum can bond individuals into a coherent group. Community singing can be powerful medicine, as places of worship ever demonstrate. A simple flower on the table or painting on the wall brings powerful archetypal energies to bear as we come together. An outdoor meeting brings nature’s magnificence to our senses, adding extraordinary power to events. The bottom line is that any community gathering, organization or event that engages body, mind and spirit has a far greater chance of surviving and thriving.

“At 18, Cleo, my small, gray cat, retired from therapy visits and missed the attention,” says Michelle Cardosi, a retail clerk in Silt, Colorado. “Kids reading to her at the school library provided a solution that satisfied everyone.” In 2010, the public library in White Settlement, Texas, adopted Browser to remedy a rodent problem. Five years later, the city council cited pending renovations and a potential impact on allergies in backing a motion to oust Browser. Supporters, pointing out that the cat brought children through the doors, successfully petitioned to keep the four-legged employee.

FELINE WORKFORCE Why a Job is the Cat’s Meow by Sandra Murphy

ome cats started their careers in barns with minimal job opportunities. With updated skills, they now boost office morale, encourage reading, promote products and provide therapy. Community cats even work in private security.

In the Office Millennials, now comprising a third of this country’s stressed-out labor force, according to the Pew Research Center and American Psychological Association, are among those that can benefit from having a cat around. Lowered blood pressure is one result, according to research by psychologist Karen Allen, Ph.D., conducted at the University at Buffalo. Even when comfort breaks are hard to schedule, insistent cats cannot be ignored. “Pompous Albert, a rejected show cat, works at SafeWise, in Salt Lake City,” relates Sage Singleton, who handles Albert’s Instagram account. “He boosts morale, reduces stress and provides entertainment.” Carlos, a former rescue kitten, greets employees at PetNovations, in Norristown, Pennsylvania, each morning. He’s the star of the corporate Instagram account and blog, and promotes the company’s eco-friendly Cat Genie litterless cat box. 48

Private Security Less socially developed feral felines can provide needed services. The Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats rescues such cats from Los Angeles shelters. Each is vetted, spayed/ neutered and microchipped. “When they’re adopted out in threes, community cats are more likely to stay on the job,” notes founder and headmistress Shawn Simons. “In Southern California, working cats are employed as assistants to brewmasters at the Monkish Brewery to protect the grain and hops and at Saluti Cellars as vintner support in charge of gopher population control,” says Simons. “More traditionally, cats at the Portuguese Bend Riding Club barn discourage mice and make friends with horses and riders.” The school’s Working Cat Program partners with area recycling centers, golf courses, warehouses and industrial parks that could otherwise lose hundreds of millions of dollars annually due to vermin-related structural damage, including gnawed wiring and other potential fire hazards. “Businesses get an all-natural, safe and effective way to control pests and cats live life naturally,” says Simons. Working cats of many stripes are becoming increasingly common. For a business, it’s a money-saver; for a cat, it’s a lifesaver. Eliminate Panic from Your Life by Shana Rosenthal, CCH

P

ains in the chest and shortness of breath are common symptoms of panic or anxiety attacks. These physical responses are distressing for most people, as they could be a sign of something more serious. Anxiety attacks can have countless causes, and sometimes they are not obvious. Research shows that difficult situations or stressful life circumstances can increase stress levels and bring on these symptoms. Regretfully, people can suffer panic attacks suddenly and for no apparent reason. Everyone has a natural fight or flight response that activates the release of stress chemicals to the brain when found in conditions where danger is sensed. This response occurs in the same way––whether the threat is just a thought or a reality. Not only can the anxiety attack itself be distressing, it can also place constraints on how people function in their everyday routines. The unpredictability of when and where the next one will occur causes them to live in fear of an attack which is often is the cause of its onset––a vicious cycle that many can relate to. Maybe you find yourself avoiding going to certain locations that you fear might bring about a panic attack. Perhaps you avoid doing particular activities or evading specific situations. Possibly you feel ill-equipped to deal with stressful situations in fear of bringing on the dreaded symptoms of anxiety. If left untreated, these symptoms escalate, and people often become isolated. A loss of confidence and self-esteem is common for those who suffer the attacks which can lead to further stress and anxiety. A panic attack can be extremely

50

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

www.nasrq.com

frightening to anyone experiencing it––not to mention, upsetting for the other people around them as well. One in 10 people will endure a panic disorder in their lifetime. Having a panic attack on a regular basis naturally increases the belief that another one will occur soon, causing constant feelings of fear. Medical professionals can prescribe medication to assist with anxiety and stress. This helps with the signs and symptoms, but not the cause. Hypnosis is found to help calm and control the actual issues driving the cause by helping the subconscious mind to reframe thinking which results in behavioral changes that reduce the effects and, in some cases, remove them entirely. Shana Rosenthal, an experienced Certified Consulting Hypnotist at Four Pillars in Lakewood Ranch, explains, “Hypnosis trains the subconscious mind to respond more appropriately to circumstances that in the past might have caused stress, tension, worry and panic. During only a small number of sessions, my clients are taught powerful techniques and tools that will stay with them for life to instill a deep inner confidence that allows them to remain calm and confident in situations that would have otherwise caused them severe panic and stress. I just love watching my clients transform in such a short period of time.” Hypnosis is an option for people who would benefit from individual supportive sessions. Hypnosis is even more effective when combined with Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) or Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT/Tapping) which helps the mind to think clearly, calmly and logically, alleviating feelings of fear and panic. Out of the shadow of continuous worry and fear, people can gain the confidence to lead fulfilling lives without constraints. The subconscious is amazingly powerful, and modifications made at this level are often long-lasting. Join Rosenthal at Four Pillars on October 5, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., for her powerful workshop “Eliminate Panic from Your Life,” during which she will share: • Powerful tools and strategies to help overcome panic • Effective methods for recognizing triggers and stopping them • Helpful information on how to deal with panic and numerous ways to achieve peace and calmness The cost to attend this workshop is $15. To register, call 941-373-3955. Shana Rosenthal is a Certified Consulting Hypnotist, Neuro Linguistic Practitioner, Emotional Freedom Technique Practitioner and is Stress Management Certified and runs her clinic at Four Pillars, guiding her clients to make profound improvements in their lives. She teaches powerful tools that enable the recipient to overcome their issues, enabling self-empowerment, control and ultimately relief. Four Pillars is located at 8209 Natures Way, Suite 221, Lakewood Ranch. For more information, email Info@FourPillasFlorida. com or visit FourPillarsFlorida.com.

Stress Eating: The Understanding & Knowledge You Need to Make It Through by Chrystal Borg

R

ecently, after the occurrence of several threatening hurricanes, I have participated in several coaching calls related to stress eating and how to deal with falling off a committed healthy lifestyle routine. Although many people berate themselves, it’s important not to allow self-doubt to inhibit you from getting back on-track toward your fullest potential. It’s also important to understand how the brain and body collaborate in an attempt to deal with stress. When we experience stress, our brains tell our bodies to release more stress hormones such as cortisol. Cortisol is secreted by the adrenal glands (small endocrine glands above the kidneys) in higher levels during the body’s response to stress. Cortisol has many important roles in the body to help manage stress. However, when we are under prolonged periods of stress, our cortisol levels do not return to normal, and can result in increased visceral fat, high blood sugar and high blood pressure. On a daily basis, we can be stressed by jobs, relationships, raising children, finances and even weather. Preparation is key to being successful. Hurricane Irma, which just recently passed over many islands and the state of Florida continuing up the East Coast of the United States, caused serious destruction in its path and raised high levels of stress for countless people. I witnessed grocery stores wiped out of certain foods, but when I walked down the healthier aisles, I noticed there were still many options. It’s important to avoid sweets, fatty temptations and prepackaged foods. We help our bodies feel their best by fueling

• Celery with almond butter (dry roasted almonds as the only ingredient) • Unsalted nuts • Peppers and cucumbers with hummus • Veggie omelets • Homemade baked sweet potato fries with coconut oil and nutmeg • Roasted chickpeas • Granny Smith apples • Beanitos chips (gluten- and corn-free bean chips) with guacamole or salsa • Mixed berries • Protein balls (I use my own recipe packed with healthy seeds like chai, hemp and flax) Our daily nutritional intake plays a major role in how we feel throughout the day. Serotonin, a key mood neurotransmitter in the brain, also has a role in determining our mood states. If you’re stress eating in an attempt to regulate your emotions, shut the refrigerator door and utilize my top 10 methods for coping with stress and raising your serotonin levels: • Exercise • Sunlight • Yoga • Massage • Reading • Sleep • Reduced caffeine intake • Meditation • Coloring or painting • Sex The fact is that stress causes damage to our bodies. Chronic stress can alter blood sugar levels, worsen irritable bowel syndrome, decrease the body’s immune system response to infection, causes abdominal fat to accumulate, raise our blood pressure and more. We should be kind to ourselves and make time to take for self-care. Choose your food wisely. It’s only human to have a “treat day” once in a while, but remember why nutrition matters, then get back on-track. Most importantly, find time to live, laugh and love every single day. Interior Worlds Can You See Inside of Things?

by Juliette Jones

T

here are those who come to think of imagination, not as though it was an ephemeral-seeming capacity, but rather as something “unreal.” Most of us have heard someone say, “That was just your imagination.” In this case, imagination is brushed aside as an illusion. On the other hand, imagination becomes an asset when employed by artists, inventors, healers and activities which require the ability to “venture inward” to bring forth what is then praised as a talent or gift. Imagination appears to emerge out of a certain receptive state of consciousness. It is also a powerful creative faculty that can be used for good or ill. In the case of the former, it also has the ability to trigger inspiration. “Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.” ––Thomas Edison Thomas Edison created and patented over 1,000 inventions, and is best known for the bright idea of the incandescent electric light bulb. According to Edison, ideas are around “in the air,” and that if he had not received them, someone else would have done so. Needless to say, he was a devotee of practical application, having stated, “The three great essentials to achieve anything worthwhile are hard work, stick-toitiveness and common sense.” Albert Einstein left behind many clues as to the way he understood his powerful image receiving faculty. He is quoted as saying, “I think 99 times and get nothing. I stop thinking, swim in silence, and the truth comes to me.” Einstein created “thought experiments” through which he imagined his own consciousness as experiencing the force, or idea that he was exploring. This led to revolutionary discoveries about time and space. “The spirit of the depths opened my eyes, and I caught a glimpse of the inner things––the world of the soul.” ––Carl Gustav Jung

Children are profound creatures. They travel in a land still not entirely separate from the cosmic self. For as long as I can remember I was intrinsically fascinated by the phenomenon of consciousness and “looking within.” As a young child, my outer environment and family life was relaxed, loving and close to nature. I grew up in a world where reflection and imagination were not discouraged. As a result, I had confidence in my inner world, and there were often occasions when I observed or reflected upon the image-making faculty of mind. One particular “thought experiment” opened a door to dreaming, intuition and the potentials of inner revelation. At the time, I was an only child and spent much time alone or with adults. Like so many children, I resisted the bedtime hour which, in my opinion, should have been later than nine o’clock. No amount of wheedling or resistance would sway my parents to extend my “awake” time. My mother always did her best to make the bedtime hour pleasant, helping me with my pajamas, reading stories and reciting prayers, but her tender efforts were not always persuasive. One night, I determined that I didn’t have to fall unconscious, but could will myself into staying awake. I closed my eyes (so that my mom wouldn’t notice the effort) and stayed vigilant for any sign of sleep. Although my efforts were initially fruitless, I persisted for weeks with great resolve––a feature of the Scorpio archetype that is well-known to astrologers and parents alike. Then, one glorious night, something amazing happened. While I was still entirely “awake,” I broke free from my body and had the awesome sensation of flying at a great speed over the surface of a body of water. Eventually, I fell into what appeared to be something like a waterfall and slipped into unconsciousness. This blissful experience only intensified my efforts to continue the experiment. From that point forward, I had the sensation of “being awake” as an entirely different sort of expanded experience. I persisted in the hopes it would happen again, and it did on quite a few occasions, but the best was yet to come. One night, after going over the waterfall, I found myself abiding in the cosmos itself surrounded by stars. Off in the distance was a “hole” that was emanating light. I desired to approach it, and this desire propelled me towards the opening. As I got closer, I noticed that it looked like what I would now describe as the aperture of an old camera. Next, the opening enlarged and let me pass through. I found myself in a different body, noticing that my arms and legs were of a different color from the little body I had come to know in my short life on earth. To make a long and detailed story short, I had arrived in a scenario which I much later recognized as holding a powerful resemblance to ancient Egypt. Keep in mind, at the time of the dreaming, I was only about three years old, and hadn’t seen or known anything about ancient Egypt. This dream repeated with exactitude many times, and later gave me insight to what people were talking about as reincarnation. It might have been this experience that triggered my capacity for dreaming and certainly a great fascination with the potentials of the higher mind. I was left with an unend-

ing curiosity to explore the dimensions of who and what we really are or might be in relation to the cosmos.

Made in the Imagination of God? If you are in alignment with the realizations that have come forth regarding consciousness––as now seen by contemporary high priests of physics, and has always been acknowledged by the mystics of the ages who have use of the “inner eye”–– you have likely come to view consciousness as nothing less than a fundamental, invisible aspect of the nature of reality. Up until recently, the natural world, as seen by physicists, was painted as four forces: gravity, electromagnetism, and the strong and weak nuclear forces. Recently, a new color has been added––consciousness (or Consciousness, with a capital “C”) has turned out to be a missing link in the previous conception of the elemental forces of nature. Science, like spirituality, has always had to venture inward to the depths of the cosmos in our quest for deeper knowledge, inventiveness and healing. We are fortunate to live at the beginning of an era where we are beginning to breaking free from the limited paradigm of scientific materialism. “As a man who has devoted his whole life to the most clear-headed science, to the study of matter, I can tell you that as a result of my research about the atoms, this much: There is no matter as such! All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particles of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent Spirit. This Spirit is the matrix of all matter”. ––Max Plank, Nobel Laureate and acknowledged Father of Quantum Mechanics.

The Art of Living Through the Seasons: Autumn Release & Renew

by Michelle Giambra The fourth in a series of five articles to help you thrive while journeying through the seasons.

A

utumn invokes within me a sense of excitement, wonderment and anticipation. Perhaps this stems from my childhood in Ohio with the all the “newness” that accompanies the beginning of the school year––new clothes, new school supplies, new classes, new teachers and so on. As an adult living in Florida, the advent of autumn brings with it a sigh of “ahhhhhh,” as the season of high temperatures comes to a close, and more comfortable weather arrives. Autumn is like a breath of fresh air. In the northern states, leaves change color, and the air becomes crisp and alive with a scent of change. In the southern states, people enjoy more time outdoors, and households are revived with fresh air flowing through open windows. From exclamations of “ahhhhhh” triggered by the beauty of the fiery colors of leaves to the sighs of “ahhhhhh” triggered by the more tolerable temperatures, the changes experienced during this season are “ahhhhhh-mazing.” 54

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

In Jin Shin Jyutsu philosophy, autumn is associated with the Second Depth Energy, lung and large intestine organ function energy pathways, and the element of air. We can support the flow of these pathways through a wonderful exhalation of “ahhhhh” and witness the newness of the breath that follows. One theme of this depth of energy is, “Every ending is the seed of a new beginning.” In harmony, there is a fluid flow of life force energy for the spirit, mind and body. However, internal and external disturbances can disrupt this flow and result in discomfort, pain or disease. Fortunately, there is ancient wisdom in Jin Shin Jyutsu to help restore and maintain harmony.

Harmonized Flow • Easy Flow of Breath: Full exhalations allow for deep, full-filling inhalations. • Common Sense: Balanced logical thinking flows through the mind. • Ability to “Let Go”: In tune with the cyclical nature of life, one is able to release, let go, say “goodbye” and prepare to receive the new.

Indicators of Disharmonized Flow • Hoarding: Clinging to possessions, people, thoughts or things begin to “own you.” • Suppressed Emotions: Bottled up grief, guilt, hurt feelings and emotions can lead to stagnation and accumulations in the body, mind and spirit. • Respiratory Issues: Bronchitis, asthma, coughing and allergies are some examples of disturbances in the flow of second depth energy.

Ways to Help Yourself • Hold Your Ring Finger: Simply wrap your right hand and fingers around your left ring finger. Relax and hold this position for two to 20 minutes. Then, reverse this position for your right ring finger. Practice every day for a minimum of 10 consecutive days. • 36 Conscious Breaths: Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.

www.nasrq.com

Let your shoulders and neck relax. Either close your eyes or keep them open. Bring your gentle, loving awareness to the flow of your breath. Exhale and count “one.” See how your inhalation arises in its own natural rhythm and there is no need to “take a breath.” Exhale and count “two.” Inhale. Continue until you have completed 36 full cycles (exhale and inhale) of breaths. • Affirmations: Repeat simple self-loving statements to yourself. Create your own or choose one of these: “I am emotionally balanced.” “I have common sense.” “I trust in the cyclical nature of life.” “I am sustained by the breath of life.” “I have all that I need.” The seasons of nature relate to the natural rhythms and energy flow patterns within our bodies. Maintaining a harmonious flow in each season can help us be happier and healthier. In autumn, be with the cycle of releasing the old and receive the new. Relax, let go and breathe, “ahhhh!”

The Enchanted Season of Halloween

by Kathleen Dove alloween’s origins come from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-een) which dates back over 2000 years in Ireland, The United Kingdom and France. After the Romans conquered the Celts in 43 AD, they appropriated the pagan rituals and adapted them to their own Christian celebrations to make them more Church friendly occasions. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as “All Saints Day,” assimilating some of the Celtic traditions of Samhain. The evening prior became known as “All Hallows Eve,” or Halloween. November 1 was the Celtic New Year, and the end of harvest time which marked the beginning of the cold, dark winter. The Celts believed on the night before each new year, the veil between the living and spirit world became thin. Samhain, October 31, was a night the departed could return

H

to the world of the living. Their presence made it easier for the ancient Druids and Priests to see the future. They could help give comfort to people by communication with their departed loved ones. The prophecies of the Priests gave them hope and reassurance during the difficult winters. Halloween is a magical, enchanting and sometimes frightening holiday filled with mystery and superstitions. It is thought to be a time when the spirit world is closest to us. The Celts used to set places at their tables for loved ones who had recently passed so they could partake of a family meal together. They lit torches along the roads to help the spirits find their way home. Many of the ancient Halloween rituals focused on the living and predicting the future by connecting to the wisdom of the spirit realm. It was not about the terrifying monsters and creepy clowns that have become the staple of popular culture. Here at The Spirit University, our readers and mediums excel at connecting to the spirit realm. We are excited about Halloween and invite you to join us October 20–21, 7–10 p.m., for “The Haunted Castle of Enchantment.” This is the perfect opportunity for both young and old to experience some mysterious and mystifying phenomena. There will be at least 13 intuitive readers, each of them practicing a different ancient form of divination. If you’ve never experienced a psychic reading, now is your chance. They will be available at just $25 for 15 minutes. Choose from tea leaves, tarot, mediumship, aura, runes and palmistry to name a few. The event will also feature our own Victoria Ackerman demonstrating Flame Cards and the Energy Cabinet. Experience an actual healing séance, while a paranormal investigation takes place. Test your problem-solving skills with our escape room. There will even be ghost stories and sugar skull face-painting. In addition, don’t forget to wear a costume for the photo booth and contest. Finally, what Halloween Haunted Castle would be complete without vampires? We will be hosting a blood drive too, and The Suncoast Blood Mobile will be on-site during the event. Blood is urgently needed for victims of both hurricanes. We will be offering free admission for anyone who donates blood. This event is located at 373 Braden Ave., Sarasota. The cost of admission is $5, and readings are $25. For more information, call 941-544-5874 or visit TheSpiritU.com.

Let’s Talk about Mercury Fillings by Dr. Martina Mallery, DDS

A

ccording to the Environmental Protection Agency, dental offices are the main contributors of environmental mercury pollution. This problem has become so severe, there is now a mandate waiting approval that will require all dentists to equip their practices with a mercury scavenging system called an amalgam separator. This amalgam separator collects the material from the fillings for proper disposal. This begs a question: if the mercury fillings are considered a severe hazard for the health of our environment, would it be possible that these fillings could also have a negative impact on the health of the person having those fillings in their mouth? The American Dental Association maintains the amount of mercury released from amalgam fillings is too small to have any documented adverse effects on human health. However, in 2005 World Health Organization released the following statement: “Adverse health effects from mercury exposure can be tremors, impaired vision and hearing, paralysis, insomnia, emotional instability, developmental deficits during fetal development, and attention deficit and development delays during childhood…Recent studies

suggest that mercury may have no threshold below which some adverse effects do not occur.” At White Sands Dentistry, we felt the need to consider both sides of the argument. After much research, we came across an organization called the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). Their researchers found that once a person has mercury fillings in their mouth, they are subject to measurable mercury vapors every time they eat, brush their teeth and receive a professional dental cleaning. The amount of mercury released grows exponentially when receiving dental restorative procedures that require placement or removal of this mercury amalgam. Moreover, further studies demonstrated that mercury is a possible cause or exacerbating factor in conditions such as allergies, thyroiditis, chronic fatigue syndrome, reproductive disorders, psychological disorders, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease. This is only a partial list, so we encourage readers to visit IAOMT.org and look up the article “2016 Fact Sheet on Human Health Risks from Dental Amalgam Mercury Fillings.” At White Sands Dentistry, we decided to take this scientific research seriously. We have been a mercury-free office, as we discontinued placement of mercury amalgam fillings many years ago. Recently, we decided to become a mercury-safe dental office as well, and we are proud to announce that we have completed certification by the S.M.A.R.T program developed by IAOMT. The acronym “SMART” stands for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique. This removal technique dramatically reduces the amount of mercury exposure. This was a significant investment for our dental practice, and we are excited to become responsible stewards of the health of our patients, our staff and last, but not least, our environment. Please feel free to contact our office and schedule a complimentary consultation if you are interested in safe removal of your dental mercury filling.

ake the entrance to your home strong! The front door is considered the mouth of Qi. Keep an unobstructed, open flow of energy to the front door. This means there are no recycling bins, cracked old pots with dead cactus or any other items blocking the flow of Qi to your front door. Keep it clean, fresh and flowing––this is always the best Feng Shui. The most auspicious Feng Shui flow of energy to the front door is a smooth and meandering path that resembles water flow. Follow this tip, and abundant health will be yours. Dr. Christina Captain is nationally boardcertified by the National Commission for Certification in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). She is the lead practitioner at the Family Healing Center which she founded in 2000. She earned her Masters degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the Academy of Chinese Healing Arts, Sarasota.
