A

cross the nation, May is recognized as Women’s Health Month, and this issue of Natural Awakenings is dedicated to raising the banner of wellness, vitality and empowerment for women of all ages. Whether your health goal is to become mindful of the foods you’re consuming, to exercise on a more consistent basis, to develop a stress management routine or to experience relief from a certain ailment, this month’s issue is loaded with insights on how natural healing, conscious living and intentional self-care make a tremendous difference in your quality of life. And this isn’t true for just the ladies—men can benefit from these wellness practices too! Our feature article for this month is “Choose Natural Care First” which focuses on how gentle alternative modalities should be our first line of defense to strengthen the body, instead of defaulting to invasive Western medicines that often leave our bodies drained and weakened. Along those same lines, our “Healing Ways” article is spotlighting a holistic trend known as personalized medicine. This approach to healing uses genotype testing to discover your unique DNA makeup and create an individualized treatment plan to align with your genetic profile. Next, if you’re a woman over the age of 45, it’s likely that you’ve started experiencing the changes and symptoms associated with menopause. These can be irritating and even painful, but exercise is a powerful method of counteracting the discomfort. This month’s “Fit Body” article explains how physical activity can ease menopause-related issues such as mood swings, hot flashes and weight gain, for instance. Some of the recommended exercises include walking, swimming, hiking, dancing, cycling, resistance training, or gentle forms of yoga and Pilates. Finally, a holistic emphasis on health is not complete without addressing our emotional and spiritual well-being too. Our article on “Pillow Self-Talk” examines three questions we should ask ourselves each night before drifting asleep. These questions can help to ground and center us in gratitude, compassion, encouragement and self-correction in order to sustain personal growth. After all, maintaining wellness isn’t just about our bodies—our minds and spirits need to be nourished as well. I hope this whets your appetite for all the inspiration and enlightenment you’ll find in the May issue of Natural Awakenings. As usual, if our content resonates with you, I’d love to know your thoughts on it. Please send any comments, questions or feedback to Publisher@NASRQ. And here’s to another month of wellness from the inside out!

Heart Centered Therapy Seminar Comes to Sarasota

O

n August 2–5, Fusion Therapy is hosting Bruno Chikly, MD, DO, LMT, and Alaya Chikly for Heart Centered Therapy at the Holiday Inn on Lido Key. HCT is a loving approach to physical-emotional healing which uses dialogue inspired by the heart. This four-day seminar provides deep healing without reliving the trauma. Inside this safe and gentle process is a direct approach that goes straight to the core of an issue to release old patterns and restore our hearts and dreams. HCT not only addresses present time issues, but also heals the trans-generational patterns that have designed our survival mechanisms and can perpetuate isolation and disconnect within the family linage. The heart has the power to orchestrate healing for everyone involved in this trauma. The process unfolds with forgiveness, compassion and love. The mind can believe this is impossible, but the heart says it’s natural and has the capacity to guide each of us home. The depth of this work is met in a profound awakening of the heart’s wisdom. This work is open to both the public and healthcare professionals. We invite family, friends, and couples to experience the deepening of their love, communication and intimacy. Cost: $850, or $650 if registered 60 days in advance. For more information and to register, call 888-333-1055 or 480-999-0808, email Trainings@ChiklyInstitute.com or visit ChiklyInstitute.com. Summer Solstice Retreat

S

acred Pathways Sarasota celebrates its first Summer Solstice by offering a three-day retreat at its new location, close to downtown but still removed from daily concerns. Intensive and transformative experiences of healing and personal growth are available for those who attend. The retreat, led by co-creators Kelly and John Stewart, includes a comprehensive, integrated program of Energy Healing, Kundalini Yoga, extended meditations, ceremony, art and music. The days begin with a Kundalini Yoga set, followed by a Sodharshan Chakra Kriya meditation. John (a.k.a. Jiwan Shakti) received this meditation from Yogi Bhajan several years ago, and has practiced it extensively as the highest meditation in Kundalini Yoga. Jiwan Shakti recorded some of the healing mantras used throughout the day. They are a part of his sound current healing practice. Kelly (a.k.a. StarLightworker), an established energy healing practitioner and massage therapist in Sarasota, will lead group energy healing sessions and guided meditations. She will use art as a vehicle for exploring our inner journeys and healing. She will also transmit some of the nine Munay-Ki rites to those willing to receive them. These rites of initiation come from the lineage of Quero shamans of the high Andes and prepare for this time of change. This retreat concludes on the day of Solstice with a Despacho Ceremony used for healing, restoring right-relationship and

protection, followed by an optional group dinner where all can relax and continue the tribal vibes. John and Kelly hope you will join them for their first three-day event in this newly renovated spiritually healing space. Cost: $180 for three days, $62 for one day. Healthy snacks are provided. Bring a light lunch. Space is limited, and registration is required. To sign up, text or call 941-322-7284. For more information, visit SacredPathwaysSarasota.com or visit StarLightworker.com.

n May 18, 1 p.m., Dr. Anna Baker, DOM, will give a seminar on her $300 facelift using Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna, her revolutionary anti-aging serum made from real pearls and Chinese herbs without any preservatives. Dr. Anna will talk about her new $300 facelift program which includes a six-month supply of the face cream and personal monitoring of the results with Dr. Anna. She will also show photographed results of people of all different ages. Pulsed Magnetic Field Therapy

P

ulsed Magnetic Field, or PEMF therapy, has been used for many years, especially in hospitals and doctor’s offices in Europe. More healing and medical practitioners are adopting this modality in the United States too. It is available in many holistic and alternative practices to heal or prevent numerous types of disease. PEMF therapy is FDA approved, and its safe to use without any side-effects. The only warning is for people with serious toxicities, and in these cases, a slow introduction is advised for the quick detoxing process. For such cases, the assistance of a doctor, naturopath or nutritionist is advised. Pulsed Magnetic Field therapy mimics the earth’s magnetic field through the process of grounding. The devices used in a session recreate this magnetic field with copper coils and electricity to energize the body’s cells. This stimulates cell function, while enhancing nutrition uptake, detoxification and oxygenation. These fields also have an effect on glucose metabolism in the brain which impacts anxiety and depression. Some of its other benefits include cell regeneration, wound and bone healing, pain relief, reduced inflammation, arthritis relief, blood circulation, nerve repair and diabetes care. If you would like to experiment with PEMF therapy, contact the Healing Room in Sarasota. Beata Molnar, energy healer and biofeedback technician, uses a PEMF mat for all her sessions. This mat has frequency programs for over a thousand conditions. For more information, call 941-586-9539 or visit Facebook.com/CreateBalanceAndHealing.

Organic Skincare Solutions at Suncoast Aesthetics

S

uncoast Aesthetics is proud to present natural and organic body and skincare services to Southwest Florida. Our medical spa offers the natural healing of platelet rich plasma (PRP). We obtain PRP by drawing a small amount of blood from your arm into a sterile tube. This sample is centrifuged to separate your plasma, which we use for the treatment, from your red and white blood cells. Plasma contains high concentration of platelets, stem cells and growth factors. Platelets help your tissue heal and grow new cells. PRP is a natural rejuvenator of the face, neck and hands. This method also results in hair restoration in both men and women. In addition, PRP is also used in women for anorgasmia and urinary incontinence (O-shot), as well as in men for erectile dysfunction and increasing penis girth (P-shot). We are also proud to carry an organic award winning skincare line from Hungary called Ilike for our all natural peels and European facials. These peels can be enhanced with professional microneedling, a natural way to reduce lines and stimulate collagen and elastin production. For the “cool” method of lose weight loss, we offer two Coolsculpting machines for maximal therapy with reduced procedure times. Laser procedures are offered as well. To schedule a free consultation, call 941-PLASTIC. For more information, visit SCAesthetics.com.

Acupuncture Facelift Seminar

Food is just the beginning!

O

n May 16, 2 p.m., Dr. Anna Baker, DOM and founder of Faces by Dr. Anna, will present a seminar on how facial muscles age and how they can be fixed with her muscle tightening acupuncture face and necklift technique. Dr. Anna will explain how facial muscles age from the 30’s to the 80’s, and she will show photographed results of her treatments reversing that aging. Dr. Anna will describe how details on the face such as cheek fullness, eye width, nose length, lip shape and jawline firmness are key indicators when someone is trying to determine your age and how her treatments make those areas look younger. A nationally board certified Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Dr. Anna has been practicing in Sarasota since 1998. She has developed a specialty in a muscle tightening acupuncture face and necklift, which is unique in that no needles are used on the face. Up to three treatments can be done in one day with a 10-treatment minimum. After treatments are completed, a one or two treatment touch-up is suggested every 18 months to maintain the lift. Dr. Anna’s work has been nationally televised, and she has been voted Sarasota’s favorite anti-aging practitioner.

Do you have health or weight goals? Let’s discuss how a customized plan can transform your dreams to reality!

Mother’s Day Offerings at Inquire Within Goddess Shoppe

A

wise man once told me a story. There once was a dog whose human mother took care of him, fed him, played with him and loved him. When the dog saw how his mother loved him, he thought, “She must be a God!” There once was a cat whose human mother took care of him, fed him, played with him and loved him. When the cat saw how his mother loved him, he thought, “I must be a God!” This year, on Mother’s Day, adopt the attitude of the dog. Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring our mothers, our maternal bonds, and the influence these have in our lives. Treat the mothers and goddesses in your life to a beautiful treasure from our boutique. We offer handmade jewelry, incense, candles, crystals, salt lamps, greeting cards, journals, tarot cards, runes, books, crystal singing bowls, Finch Berry soaps, all natural personal care products and more. A gift of a psychic reading, astrology consultation or goddess/energy healing would also be a unique gift to celebrate this special occasion. We look forward to helping you create a memorable Mother’s Day. Location: 6283 Lake Osprey Dr., Sarasota. For more information, call 941-822-8056.

A Comprehensive Approach to Hormone Therapy

O

prah Winfrey brought the issue of hormone imbalance to national attention. While struggling with an “empty tank of hormones” and stating that her “life force is being slowly drained,” she soon started Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), Then in just three days, she exclaimed, “The sky was bluer, my brain was no longer fuzzy, and my memory was sharper!” Can you relate? If anxiety, fatigue, low-grade depression, lack of drive, weight gain, sleep problems, lack of mental clarity, osteoporosis, high cholesterol and other chronic illnesses have left you feeling drained of your life force, BHRT could be your answer. At Point Lumineux, we combine functional medicine with BHRT, creating a more comprehensive solution for your hormone imbalances. We use only the highest quality laboratory testing and bioidentical plant-based hormones from the best compounding pharmacies in the country. In addition to traditional hormone testing, we look at hormone precursors, vitamins and minerals that affect hormones, as well as Vitamin D3, which is actually a hormone itself. This comprehensive testing strategy allows us to correct imbalances more upstream in the biochemical processes and earlier in the disease process. At Point Lumineux we provide the best holistic, natural care for your optimal health, and we are offering 20% off your BHRT consultation. Mention this offer when you call to schedule and receive 20% off your hormone replacement consultation, regularly priced at $150. Location: 2206 Jo Ann Dr., Suite 4, Sarasota. Hypnosis and Health

W

hat does hypnosis have to do with health? The answer is based on the idea that we have both a conscious” and unconscious mind. The conscious mind is the one people are most familiar with because they are aware of using it to analyze options, consider alternatives and make decisions. The unconscious mind, however, is a mind of the body. It runs all systems—endocrine, respiratory, reproductive, circulatory and immune, to name a few. The unconscious mind operates these processes in the background without any conscious awareness or direction from us. If our conscious mind is the decider, then our unconscious mind is the implementer—once it has been engaged. Most of the time, we do not harness the power of this unconscious mind to produce the health we desire. The language of the unconscious is raw, sensory-based communication—our senses of hearing, seeing, feeling, smelling and tasting— not spoken language. So, if you want to engage the unconscious in implementing your health decisions, you need to make pictures, attach feelings to them, and use repetition to convince the unconscious that you expect results. Emerging and mounting research is proving the mind has q power to help heal the body. Techniques such as hypnosis can decrease feelings of pain and help recover from an acute illness or a chronic condition. The mind can be challenging to train, but hiring a trained clinician could be the key to achieving your desired results. Can Neurofeedback Help with Depression?

W

hen experiencing depression, it’s essential to care for yourself first and foremost. Your feelings are real, and you can trust yourself to find a solution. It’s also important to ask for help. Depression was one of the earliest clinical applications of Neurofeedback. According to Dr. Corydon Hammond, University of Utah School of Medicine, when there is slow brainwave activity in the left frontal area, this part of the brain is inactive, and the right frontal area is more dominant. In this case, a person is predisposed to become depressed more easily, to exhibit behaviors of anxiety or to withdraw from other people. Neurofeedback is a method of brain training that enables the brain to function more effectively. It is non-invasive, uses no drugs, and can be expertly and easily performed in our Sarasota office. Neurofeedback treatments for depression appear promising not only in bringing relief from depression, but in modifying the underlying biological predisposition for becoming depressed in the first place. Neurofeedback focuses on retraining the brain, or in the case of depression as described above, reversing the frontal brainwave asymmetry with the goal of producing a sustainable change. Training for depression often requires about 20 sessions on average. Neurofeedback can be effective on its own. However, continued research has shown that when it is combined with traditional therapies such as medications, counselling or self-help techniques, the outcomes are typically superior. My Florida Green Offers Medical Marijuana as a Natural Alternative

M

y Florida Green expands into Sarasota with six medical marijuana certification centers open across the state. Because of this, thousands of patients now have access to medical marijuana. The Medical Marijuana certification process has been difficult for the past 18 months due to regulations and inexperienced doctors. Medical marijuana is not a prescription, so a physician can’t “prescribe: a federally illegal drug. If your medical marijuana physician is restricting you with milligrams and specific delivery methods, it might be time to find a new doctor. My Florida Green physicians follow the same protocol with recommending the maximum dose with the ability to sample all delivery methods available. Each patient is different with individual digestive systems. We are all different and should titrate individually. Start low, go slow, and gradually increase as needed. Thankfully, no one has ever overdosed on marijuana in the thousands of years it’s been used as medicine. Google the death toll on the medications in your medicine cabinet, and you’ll be surprised by the statistics. For example, 88,000 alcohol related deaths occur annually, and 66,000 opiate overdose deaths were reported in 2016 alone. Marijuana, however, caused zero deaths to occur. My Florida Green helps anyone looking to heal naturally. All patients are educated on the medicinal values of medical marijuana and how to administer it. They establish long-term relationships with their patients, as health, wellness and satisfaction are top priorities. “Medical marijuana made easy” is their credo, and they are thrilled to facilitate patient access to a natural healing alternative. Shaman Journey Experience

O

n May 19, in the fullness of spring’s awakening and time of new beginnings, we seek out answers to our quests and questions in this wondrous time of our spiritual growth, innovations and intentions. We choose to be of the world but not in it. Spirit draws us closer to itself in our understanding. A shaman journey is similar to a guided meditation, enhanced by the heartbeat of the large mother drum. The journey will take us into the expansive dimensions of imagination where reality and dream-time interweave into a perfect tapestry based on our needs, rhythms, perceptions and frequencies. The seen and unseen, known and unknown, open before us for guidance, clarity, insight and healing. Through the reverberation of the drum, inner gateways to the sub-conscious and super-conscious open, helping us access guides, helpers and totems for healing and insight according to our individual needs. This is the place of the Shaman’s dream where connections and relationships magically unfold. Bring a mat, pillow or blanket (although Rising Tide has both), something with which to cover your eyes, a spirit stone or rock (Wotai), and paper to record your experience. The journey itself is 35 to 40 minutes, while the rest is preparation and processing. Cost: $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Advance registration is strongly advised. For more information and to sign up, call 941-922-7839 or email Zan@Woman-Spirit. com. Reserve your spot via PayPal at Woman-Spirit.com or mail cash or check made payable to Zan Benham to 2839 Trinidad St., Sarasota, FL 34231.

When an adult looks into the eyes of a baby, a synchronization of brain waves occurs that could indicate an intention to communicate, concludes a Cambridge University study of 36 infants. This coordinating supports the baby’s early learning and communication skills, according to the researchers. The effect, which researchers measured via electroencephalogram (EEG)-wired skullcaps, was strongest with eyeto-eye contact and weaker when the adult’s head was turned away. The more vocalizations—little sounds—the baby made, the greater their brainwaves synchronized with the adult.

Another 18 depressed adults attending an attention control class for the same period of time, afterwards had somewhat lower depression scores overall, but less than half the improvement, plus they showed greater mood fluctuation.

Press On Qi with Jeff Primack: Part 1 of 2 interview conducted by Publisher Damon Damato

Damon Damato: Can you bring a Universal meaning to describe what is Qi?

Jeff Primack: “Qi” is the electric life presence that beats the human heart and charges the air we breathe. “Gong,” like Gong Fu, is a repeated action to activate higher energy. Qigong generates a powerful magnetic field in the hands, and this energy dilates arteries to heal what it touches. The effects of Qi are profound for increasing circulation and improving endocrine imbalances. Science will discover Qi is related to static electricity, and can be harnessed with hand postures.

Damato: Qi Revolution is coming to Bradenton, Florida, for your national event on July 28–30. What is your higher vision for sharing this kind of healing with a thousand people? Primack: I believe when more human beings develop “Qi Awareness,” human evolution will go higher. We hold our national event once a year and transform a convention center into sacred space. Our intention is to experience the authentic healing and stressdissolving practices of Qigong in a strong group energy field. Sound, light and Qi graphics are used to improve learning so everyone can feel what is going on without any previous experience. It’s rare that 1000 people all simultaneously inhale at the same second, while holding the same healing prayer. Many people who attend heal old injuries, and nearly everyone is strengthened by the energy. Our vision for this event is to uplift the group energy to the highest level to benefit all who attend.

Damato: Is there any significance to practicing Qigong in large groups?

Primack: From 1980–1999, the Chinese people gathered for Qigong events inside arenas and stadiums with tens of thousands of people. Dr. Yan Xin led this first wave of Qi awareness with integrity, but other fake masters misused Qigong to protest the government, and Qigong was banned in large group settings. Chinese people had discovered the secret of “Group Energy,” and it went beyond the roar of a rock concert or the cheers in a football game. Qigong was a weekly outing in China for two decades, and people viewed Qigong as an opportunity to be strengthened and healed, while enjoying fellowship with friends. Qi sensations and internal benefits reach into the scientific minds of truth seeking men and women. Where two or more practice Qigong, sincerely there exists a larger living field of energy, and I believe it’s stronger when more people practice. 26

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

www.nasrq.com

Damato: The breath work at the Qi Revolution is transformative. Since every person is connected to it, do you believe the answers to healing and overcoming negative emotions are found here?

Primack: Breathing is the most powerful skill humans can learn to attune with the spirit of life. Genesis 2:7 reveals, “God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” After teaching Qigong breathing to groups, both large and small, I would say there is a connection. People report euphoric vibrational experiences when they participate in our Breath Empowerment, even if they don’t believe that Qi exists. Breath work is the best Gong Fu—repeated deep breathes will break the veil of darkness and negative thoughts, eventually flooding the body with light energy.

Damato: Can an individual become more peaceful and increase awareness from the breath?

Primack: A surgeon Perrin Clark, MD, who attended our national event last year, frequently came home stressed out after telling five patients a day they had cancer. His job was to be the bearer of bad news, and consequently, Dr. Perrin held his breath a lot! He now reports that his stress has gone down dramatically since attending Qi Revolution and learning Qigong. As a result, he attended my advanced trainings, and was certified to share Qigong and Food Healing. He now tells cancer patients about eating asparagus, the highest source of glutathione for boosting phase two liver detoxification.

Damato: There are a number of healing routines within the Qi Revolution experience.
Do people need to be fit to participate? Can they receive healing attributes if they are out of shape or have physical impairments?

Primack: Those with injuries often experience pain relief doing Qigong in the first morning practices. We are fine with people practicing wherever their bodies are at, and we can provide modified postures for those who need special assistance. People of all ages can benefit from Qigong’s challenge.

Damato: I’ve seen a shift over the past few years where your focus has zeroed in on food healing, especially in regards to food science. Why do you feel this is so important in today’s world, and how does it relate to someone’s personal Qi? Primack: Food is the key to excellent health, especially natural foods made before the inventions of man. Kiwi for example, helps to reverse asthma in hundreds of students I’ve counseled. Moreover, prestigious medical journal Thorax indicates children who eat kiwi three to five times a week versus those who didn’t eat any have a much lower incidence of asthma. My theories have science to back them. The proof is really in whether or not God’s kiwi helps people breathe. Evidence shows kiwi should be suggested by allergists and breathing therapists to help children with this disease (“Kiwi’s Effect on Breathing,” Thorax J. Respiratory Medicine, 2004). Food effects our Qi by becoming our blood and the cells which carry oxygen to the brain. I teach that eating red foods

(high in carotenoids) is the best method to stop the oxidative processes responsible for heart disease and brain degeneration. We make smoothies and serve sweet red pepper paste to all attendees at Qi Revolution, so they can taste for themselves how delicious natural foods can be prepared.

Damato: You perform a Global Healing Circle that is legendary. How does it connect participants using the 9-Breath Method with an expanded process? Primack: The living electricity felt in the hands of the healing circle is unlike anything else we teach. After everyone is proficient in using the 9-Breath Method, our signature breathing technique, we hold hands while doing it many times. The feeling is like an electric current going through everyone’s legs, arms and hands. It feels so good—delicious I might even add. We focus our minds to God and ask for the healing of people we love, then send light to noble groups and nations worldwide.

Damato: You have vowed from the beginning to keep the cost of Qi Revolution in reach for all people, and have even gone as far as to of-

fer this healing for Veterans free of charge. You offer 24 CE’s for message therapists for an incredible value. Can you share the importance of putting people over profit?

Primack: Qigong is not only for those with material success. Qi Revolution is $149 for three days which has made it affordable to open the “Qi Door” for more people.

Massage Therapists love our training and earn 24 CE hours when they attend. We allow U.S. veterans to attend free, and each year, hundreds of veterans do attend. Many of them have become our best Qigong instructors. For more information and to register for this event, call 800-298-8970 or visit QiRevolution.com.

REFRAMING MASSAGE: Not an Occasional Luxury, But a Wellness Necessity

by Mary-Elizabeth Schurrer

W

hen you hear the word “massage,” you might be inclined to associate it with an extravagance you don’t have enough time or space in your budget for. Images of chanting music, burning incense or kneading muscles come to mind, and the whole experience just seems too “indulgent” in a culture that glorifies busyness and productivity. What all too often goes unnoticed, however, is that a massage is holistically healing in the physical, mental and spiritual sense—there is a legitimate reason it’s called “massage therapy,” in fact. Designating even one hour each month in your schedule for a massage is not some frivolous expense or impractical waste of time. It’s an investment in your wellness, an invitation to unwind and recharge from the pace of this frenetic world that can otherwise leave you feeling consumed or depleted. Massage is not gratuitous—it’s foundational to health maintenance. “Massage offers numerous, far-reaching benefits for both the mind and body,” enumerates Eric Seace, owner-operator of the three Sarasota Massage Envy locations. “Our clients tend to enjoy the stress, tension and pain relief, increased flexibility, reduced blood pressure, enhanced sleep, 28

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

improved focus and greater internal balance, so they can be more engaged as parents and spouses and more productive in their careers.” This restored feeling of harmony extends outside just the physical to create a positive impact on all facets of life, whether in a social context, family dynamic, work setting or personal growth area. But of course, this modality can do wonders for the strength, well-being and function of the body too—not to mention, there’s a diverse array of massage techniques to address all kinds of preferences or needs. Seace illustrates, “We offer a multitude of options, ranging from Swedish massages designed to melt away stress and encourage relaxation, to deep-penetrating sports massages aimed to relieve or prevent injuries, increase circulation and target flexibility. In total, we employ about 100 massage therapists, all with their own specialties, so when scheduling an appointment, we assist in pairing your desired massage style with the perfect therapist.” One regimen, in particular, is a new form of bodywork developed by Massage Envy in response to their clients’ increased levels of fitness. The more active

www.nasrq.com

a person’s lifestyle becomes, the more demand there is for tension release and injury avoidance which is exactly what this technique, called the Streto Method, strives for. “This premier, customizable assisted stretching service is designed to relax the mind as the body is stretched,” Seace explains. “Our total body stretch providers are trained to perform specific movements that deliver more results than you can achieve when stretching on your own. Regular assisted stretching increases flexibility which, in turn, improves mobility and leads to a better performance. Our favorite combination is the 30-minute stretch prior to a 60- or 90-minute massage. We call it ‘turbo charging’ your massage!” So we’ve established that massage is a keystone of health, rejuvenation and equilibrium—not some guilt-inducing luxury. But how frequently should it be integrated as an adjunct to your wellness or self-care routine? Seace weighs in, “Everyone is different, but at least twice a month seems to be an ideal balance, although we have many clients who come once a week! “We have found that when our clients receive regular massages, even once a month for three to four consecutive months, they will rarely stop that momentum. Once they experience the benefits of consistent massage—not just once a year— they begin to understand just how important and rewarding this modality is.” And if you feel pampered or indulged in the process...well, that’s just an added bonus! Eric Seace and his partner Pete Kapinos own and operate the three Sarasota Massage Envy franchises. Loren Niswander owns and operated the Port Charlotte franchise. HEALING THE HARD STUFF Natural Approaches Resolve Major Illnesses by Linda Sechrist

A

lthough natural health enthusiasts may recognize alternative healing modalities as a preferred approach to treatment, in the face of major health issues, even they tend to join the crowd that’s turning first to conventional medicine. Thus, many gentler modalities described in The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, co-authored by doctors of naturopathy Michael T. Murray and Joseph Pizzorno, remain largely untapped resources. Ignored because they are unsupported by traditional sciencebased medicine, holistic measures such as acupuncture, energy medicine, essential oils, herbs, detoxification, health-promoting diets, homeopathy, prayer and meditation, supplementation, yoga, massage and naturopathy are sacrificed in favor of often painful medical procedures and prescription drugs which can’t claim to permanently cure anything and can have many harmful side effects. 30

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

Lack of Awareness

“A patient that dabbles in holistic medicine for minor health issues such as indigestion, headache or insomnia often turns to conventional methods after receiving a serious diagnosis such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer because they are scared,” observes holistic physician Dr. Wendy Warner, medical director of Medicine in Balance, in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. The co-author of Boosting Your Immunity for Dummies suggests that relatively few people turn to natural solutions for both preventive and therapeutic measures because they’re unaware they exist. Integrative oncologists and endocrinologists that are aware of the benefits of natural complementary methods are scarce. Relatively few conventional doctors are educated in functional medicine. “Yet complementary modalities such as acupuncture, massage and some essential oils can support the immune system and help an individual deal with stress experienced from coping with their illness,” says Warner.

www.nasrq.com

Rob Wergin, an experienced energy medicine practitioner, speaks from experience regarding clients that consult him for lifethreatening diagnoses. “When I see them, they’re desperate and have exhausted all conventional methods. I’m their lastditch effort,” remarks Wergin. The most frequent reason he hears is, “My family, friends and doctor told me not to waste my money on charlatans.” “People find it challenging to put faith in natural methods and are nervous about going against a doctor’s advice until they feel or see positive results; even these may not provide sufficient motivation to continue with alternative treatments,” he says. “I believe this is the result of the influence of pharmaceutical ads promising results, the medical community’s belief in proof solely through clinical trials, websites like Quackwatch. com and well-meaning friends insisting that the conventional route is the only way to go. It’s sad to see the gravity of these influences pulling clients back into solely believing in the Western model of medicine,” says Wergin. Ann Lee, a doctor of naturopathy, acupuncturist and founder of the Health for Life Clinic, Inc., in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, notes, “This mindset continues to get reinforced by insurance companies that do not cover alternatives. Paying out of pocket for medical expenses also influences a patient’s choices.” Kelly Noonan-Gores and Adam Schomer, director and producer, respectively, of the documentary film HEAL, suggest that unconscious conditioning plays the biggest role in an individual’s choices. “We are deeply conditioned to view medical specialists and prestigious medical institutions as the ones with all the answers. Sometimes they do and sometimes they

don’t,” says Noonan-Gores, who intends to have her film awaken viewers to the possibilities of alternative paths of healing. As just one other example noted in the film, thousands have used the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), tapping on their body to help release the trauma and stress often associated with illness.

“Before, I wasn’t familiar with EFT, which I continue to use and benefit from. However, despite everything I’ve learned, I can’t give up on all Western medicine, put my faith in alternatives and let my intuition and faith guide me to healing. It’s easier to be skeptical than to have faith,” Lee says.

Ask them to show, help and teach you. I’ve seen many people restored to health by using methods that science is only beginning to understand.”

Resistance to Change

Quiet Role Models

Sheila Tucker, a resident of Navarre, Florida, has been a registered nurse for 20 years, practicing in hospital settings such as critical care, emergency and administration. “I know and understand doctors, surgeries and pharmaceutical treatments and hospitals,” says Tucker, who recalls that throughout her life she was taught to believe in a system that suddenly stopped working for her. “In 2014, I was dying from a rare autoimmune condition, requiring fulltime care, and planning my funeral. Doctors had tried everything, yet my health continued to decline. When I saw a friend’s Facebook posts about her use of essential oils, I was curious, but reluctant to reach out, and didn’t want anyone to know that I called her for advice,” recalls Tucker. “Shortly after my friend arrived with her oils, my husband came home with our daughter, who had strep throat and a fever. She made us promise to use selected oils through the night and prayed with us.” Tucker attributes the miracle of her daughter’s turnaround the next morning to shifting her paradigm and opening her up to believing in the healing power of essential oils. Thanks to her friend and role model, Tucker learned how to use therapeuticgrade oils, supplements and a healthy diet to cleanse her body of the heavy toxic load accumulated from several years of expensive drug treatments. Today, she is a healthy and enthusiastic advocate, and her personal results opened the eyes of her physician to the point where she also shifted her own philosophy of healing. Tucker now offers educational classes in her office and online through her

“Outside of any dominant paradigm, it’s easier to cast suspicion than to make curious inquiry and, over time, working within a dominant worldview creates polarity, the antithesis of ‘wholism’. An inclusive approach integrates all medical and complementary approaches, as well as interaction with the natural world,” says Patrick Hanaway, a family physician and founder of Family to Family Medicine, in Asheville, North Carolina. Hanaway, the former director of medical education for the Institute for Functional Medicine and the first medical director at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, explains, “Doctors have a rigorous job filled with responsibility. Change is difficult and investigating vastly different ways of practicing medicine requires a degree of curiosity and openness. I am heartened by thought leaders and heads of top medical schools who are presently opening up to functional medicine, natural medicine and complementary approaches.” “The paradigm shift we are ushering in has been 50 years in the making,” assesses Hanaway. “Some medical professionals are immersed in a polar view of right and wrong, offering personal attacks and disparaging comments to maintain control of the dialogue. This is not appreciated by patients who look to the doctor as a teacher—the Latin docere means to teach. “The movement to change medicine and the cultural paradigm of healing is a marathon, not a sprint, and those of us involved are prepared to stay the course.”

“The conventional medical community wants to maintain the model in which they have heavily invested centuries of time, energy and money. Patients that investigate integrative and complementary medicine may resist hearing that in order to get well, they might need to change their worldview and lifestyle, take a leave of absence from their job, develop a spiritual practice, exercise or maybe even leave a toxic relationship,” says Schomer. “Conventional medicine says take this pill and keep living your life the same way,” says Schomer. “We are not demonizing doctors, pharmaceuticals or the medical system. We simply believe that individuals are more empowered to heal when they take control of their health.” Eva Lee, a resident of Los Angeles featured in the documentary, suffers from a rare and unpredictable form of blistering skin inflammation. “I’ve tested negative for faulty genes and all sorts of rare viruses and bacteria, which helped point me towards holistic methods. So far, following the directives of Dr. Mark Emerson, a chiropractor specializing in nutrition, in Maui, Hawaii, who I met while filming, has helped my body become healthier and deal with inflammation levels that rapidly reduced as soon as I detoxed and eliminated meat and dairy from my diet,” says Lee. Still, it’s hard for her to accept that her condition could be due to the type of stress and suppressed emotions that Anthony William explores in his book Medical Medium: Secrets Behind Chronic and Mystery Illness and How to Finally Heal.

KELLY NOONAN-GORES ON HOW WE SHAPE OUR HEALTH by April Thompson

A

fter Los Angeles native Kelly Noonan-Gores spent 20 years in front of the camera as an actress, she turned her talents to producing award-winning films like Tooken, Beneath and Take a Seat. She considers her latest, the documentary HEAL (HealDocumentary.com), to be her ultimate achievement. “I included as many inspiring stories of healing change as possible to expand viewers’ beliefs in what’s possible, to alter the narrative around mystery illnesses being incurable or cancer equaling death,” says Noonan-Gores. When she was prescribed Prilosec for acid reflux at age 28, Noonan-Gores decided she was too young and otherwise healthy to become dependent on it. By taking an integrative nutrition course, she realized the possibilities of alternative healing methods, catalyzing an ongoing exploration into optimizing life and health through the

powers of mind, body and spirit. “We are not the passive victims of faulty genes; our lifestyle choices, thoughts, and beliefs shape our health,” says Noonan-Gores, a longtime practitioner of yoga and meditation. HEAL features uplifting interviews with the scientists, visionaries and healers that inspired her, including Deepak Chopra, Bruce Lipton, Marianne Williamson and patients diagnosed with diverse ailments that sought different healing modalities to take their health into their own hands.

What are some common elements in the stories of patients featured in HEAL? One common thread revolves around our subconscious programming. From the time we’re born, we are downloading “programs” or belief systems from society, parents, teachers and whoever and whatever else

is in our environment. Many have learned through their own healing journeys of negative belief systems running their lives; each one had to become aware of these beliefs in order to change. Another is that when events are too painful, we consciously suppress or unconsciously repress them, and that trauma stays in our cells and might manifest in disease. To move that stuck energy, we must heal that emotional trauma to allow physical ailments to transform. A third theme is understanding how stress affects our lives and immune systems, and doing things to manage or mitigate it through tools like meditation or breath work. Some of the patients worked with spiritual psychologists using Emotional Freedom Techniques to release past stress held in their body, shifting beliefs to a trusting, non-victim place. Dietary shifts also made a difference. In acute healing, we realize the effect of different foods which can reduce or exacerbate inflammation.

Which messages in how the body and mind collaborate to promote healing are audiences keying in on? Visualization is a powerful and widespread tool in healing; we can use imagination to reframe and tell a different story. Research has shown that visualizations can affect brain chemistry and lessen side effects. The mind is conditioned to go to the worst-case scenario; we can instead retrain it to focus on the best-case scenario, and what we want to happen, increasing the likelihood it will occur.

thing that cultivates joy. It’s a moment-bymoment choice.

What role do faith and belief systems play in the healing journey? It all comes down to what we believe. If you believe in and expect an effect, like what we see with a placebo, the brain will create and release natural chemicals that might be prompted by a targeted drug. Believing you are a victim of genes and circumstance induces stress, whereas having faith in a loving universe produces greater ease.

and demand a different response, the paradigm will shift. Health care will have to change as we apply the power in our hearts and minds. Our bodies are a microcosm of the universe; the planet can heal itself and thrive as we remove the toxins and become fully aware of what we are putting in the air, water and soil.

How do emotions influence health and healing? Gregg Braden and Joe Dispenza, interviewed in HEAL, discuss how rage, jealousy, trauma and fear put the body in a stress response and create inflammation and other detrimental effects. PERSONALIZED HEALTH CARE

Functional Medicine Leads the Way by Linda Sechrist

Historical Overview

New Standard of Care

During the last 25 years, a less drug-based grassroots model for dealing with chronic illnesses in the U.S. has emerged. First labeled holistic, the movement gained momentum as alternative approaches morphed into being considered complementary to conventional medicine, warranting studies by the National Institutes of Health. Responding to public interest, an integrative model of care that focuses on the whole person has taken root in medical institutions such as the Cleveland Clinic, in Ohio. The latest evolution to a systemsoriented, patient-focused clinical model of functional medicine, which seeks to address causes of illness, rather than simply treat symptoms, has been garnering increasing interest by the public and pioneering medical professionals. It’s now maturing into personalized functional medicine.

One of the best-prepared, traditionally trained medical professionals in explaining this approach is Jeffrey S. Bland, Ph.D., recognized as the father of functional medicine, and author of The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Causes of Chronic Illness for a Healthier, Longer and Happier Life. He co-founded, with his wife, Susan, the Institute for Functional Medicine, in Washington, which provides a system geared to understanding the complexity of chronic illness and design individualized programs for more effective healing. “Medical science didn’t have the advanced technology 25 years ago to perform the research that now helps us better understand the complexity of chronic illness, as well as our present ecological view of the body. Today we’re examining how all the networks of our biology intersect in a dynamic process that creates health when

34

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

www.nasrq.com

in balance or disease when out of balance,” attests Bland, whose career has focused on searching for a unifying principle behind all healing that can be used to discern the best possible therapy for specific individuals. Incorporating what he learned from Linus Pauling, Ph.D., two-time Nobel Prize laureate, and Lee Hood, M.D., Ph.D., as well as systems biology and practicing lifestyle medicine, Bland founded the nonprofit Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute (PLMInstitute.org) in 2012. Seeking to transform the entire medical approach to chronic illness, the Seattle-based organization is a virtual and onsite hub for health professionals, researchers, educators and the public to share ideas and converse about how personalized functional medicine can be delivered to everyone as an improved standard of care.

Role of Genetics The National Human Genome Research Institute, in Bethesda, Maryland, maintains that an evolved approach to medicine starts with using an individual’s genetic profile to determine the best path to preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases. By 2003, scientists had delivered the first essentially complete sequence and map of all the genes in the human body. Three decades ago, the medical fraternity had few reliable explanations for the origins of chronic health issues. Today, accepted factors include predispositions for a specific disease related to an individual’s genome, along with contemporary epigenetic influences such as nutrition, environment and lifestyle. None of these elements, however, necessarily define our destiny. “This genomic personalized medicine approach is creating friends among all healing arts practitioners because it facilitates our using information to design a less-toxic environment, lifestyle, diet and treatment to meet an individual’s specific needs and particular circumstances that led to a disease,” says Bland. “Diseases are only names assigned to a collection of symptoms,” says Bland. “They don’t indicate how the individual became afflicted. If 10 patients with Type 2 diabetes each had epigenetic variations that

triggered getting the condition, it would be unwise to treat them all the same; it’s far better to treat those factors that specifically led to the disease.” Addressing the concern that genetic test results might be used to deny someone health insurance, Bland notes, “This is a significant misunderstanding about genetic testing. Our genes don’t tell us how we are going to die. They tell us how we should live. Understanding how our genes can help us live to 100 is a model of enlightenment. Those that practice this systems biology approach are counting on functional personalized medicine becoming the updated standard of care.” Physicians often offer genetic testing services. At-home DNA testing can be done using a saliva collection kit mailed to a laboratory, offering both ancestry and health information that must be interpreted by an informed professional.

Moving Through

MENOPAUSE Exercising Reduces Symptoms

T

by Marlaina Donato

ransitioning through menopause and the years of perimenopausal hormone fluctuation leading up to the finale can be physically and emotionally challenging for many women. Consistently following a healthy diet and positive lifestyle are important, and health researchers, doctors and midlife women can attest to the multidimensional benefits of exercise. Perks may include reduction of menopausal discomfort, better brain function, stronger bones and reversal of estrogen dominance syndrome that can set the stage for fibroids, cystic breasts, cancer, migraines and weight gain.

Get Moving

Studies of 3,500 women in South and Central America have shown that a more active life reduces hot flashes and night sweats. The results, published in Menopause, the journal of the North American Menopause Society, reveal that sedentary individuals often experience increased intensity of related symptoms like insomnia and irritability. Aerobic exercise such as regular walking, hiking, swimming or biking might also help the brain produce neurochemicals that are compromised when estrogen levels drop. Sue Markovitch, author and owner of Clear Rock Fitness, in Columbus, Ohio, recommends aerobic exercise. “I believe our bodies were made to move. One of the amazing gifts of fitness is it’s truly never too late. When we incorporate daily movement in our lives, all the other systems in the body will work more according to plan. Simply taking a daily walk helps balance brain chemistry,” says Markovitch, who specializes in improving fitness levels for women over 40. “Walking is fitness magic, whether it’s on a treadmill, outside or in the pool. Get your heart rate into an aerobic zone, preferably for 30 to 45 minutes. I’ve heard testimony 36

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

www.nasrq.com

after testimony of improved sleep, less back or joint pain and better mood.” She also suggests adding a few weekly sessions of resistance training to daily walks. Most health professionals agree that balance is the key. Jeanne D. Andrus, a menopause expert and author of I Just Want to Be ME Again, in Covington, Louisiana, recommends cardio, resistance training and exercise that increases flexibility and core strength. “For a beginner, this may include two to four days of walking, one to three days of strength training and one to three days of yoga or Pilates, with the goal being three and a half hours of activity per week.” Of course, all of these need to be at appropriate levels for the woman’s condition and goals,” advises Andrus. According to studies led by Helen Jones, Ph.D., from the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University, UK, three, 30-to-45-minute aerobic sessions a week reduced hot flashes and yielded the most significant results.

Go Easy

While some conventional approaches suggest vigorous exercise, many holistic professionals caution against extremes. “It’s important to individualize, and in my ongoing research it’s clear that the high-intensity strength and sculpting approach so often promoted and perceived as necessary to maintain shape, weight and health is a myth,” says Dr. Eden Fromberg, an obstetrician, gynecologist and founder of Holistic Gynecology New York, in Manhattan. Instead, Fromberg recommends an integrated approach to exercise that supports connective tissue and joints. While some

forms of exercise including yoga are perceived as gentler than others, she warns against an all-or-nothing strategy, noting, “Intense, deep stretching and joint-straining may cause injury more easily during hormonal transition.” Andrus concurs, “If high cortisol levels are involved and accompanied by insomnia, stress placed on the body by rigorous exercise will increase these levels and actually lower available energy.” She also advises adopting a non-aggressive approach for osteoporosis. “Weight-bearing exercise is a must, but if bone loss is already present, start much more gradually to ensure that bones are protected.”

Lighten Up

Exercise can be more enjoyable than doing chores. Recreational activities such as dancing, biking or hopping on the swings at the playground are fun ways to do something good for both body and spirit. Menopause can be a time for personal expansion and an invitation for self-care that might have been neglected or postponed. Fromberg believes we can all revitalize our resources at any stage of life, and the years surrounding menopause call for us to tune into ourselves even more. “What seems like a disruption is an opportunity to listen deeply and reimagine and reorganize one’s life on physical, emotional and spiritual levels.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer, author and multimedia artist. hile not essential to every dish or meal, condiments provide extra flavoring, final flourishes and added enjoyment to any dish. Such meal accompaniments range from vinegars to spreads and sauces, finishing spice mixtures and natural salts. America’s previous king of condiments was ketchup. Today, according to a 2017 poll from TheDailyMeal.com, it stands behind mayonnaise and mustard with soy and hot sauce rounding out the top five (generic product ranking at Tinyurl.com/ Top20Condiments). We often take familiar condiments for granted, yet a look at their ingredients can be startling. Many prominently include processed corn syrup and other sugars, sodium, gluten, monosodium glutamate (MSG), artificial flavors and unpronounceable preservatives, according to Dana Angelo White, a registered dietitian in Fairfield, Connecticut. Homemade versions of condiments provide a happy alternative. They not

www.nasrq.com

only taste great, but can be good for us. “Certain condiments add more to your meals than flavor—some actually improve your health,” says White. The potassium in homemade mustard is good for the digestive system through stimulating the flow of saliva, suggests a study in the Indian Journal of Medical Research. Homemade ketchup made with small cooked tomatoes is rich in lycopene, a nutrient that protects heart health, according to research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. White’s fresh-made “THE Green Sauce,” full of vitamin-rich avocado and cilantro, is replete with antioxidants (Tinyurl.com/TheGreenSauceRecipe).

Better Basics Ketchup

Heather McClees, a plant-based nutritionist in South Carolina who blogs at One Green Planet, once loved commercial ketchup; then she read the labels. “Most ketchup is made of tomato concentrates, sugars, including high-fructose corn syrup, cane

sugar, agave nectar, coconut nectar/syrup, brown rice syrup, cane juice and cane crystals, vinegar, “spices” that is likely code for MSG, water and refined salt. All of this makes ketchup addicting,” she says. “While you could pay for pricey organic ketchup and condiments that come without added sugars, you can save money by spending five minutes in the kitchen to make your own.” Find a recipe at Tinyurl.com/HealthyKetchupRecipe.

Mustard

Serious Eats food writer Joshua Bousel uses only six ingredients to make a deliciously easy Grainy Mustard: yellow and brown mustard seeds, dry white wine, white wine vinegar, kosher salt and an optional pinch of brown sugar. Learn how at Tinyurl.com/ WholeGrainDijonRecipe.

Mayonnaise and Ranch Dressing

Eschewing eggs, J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, of San Mateo, California, uses aquafaba, the starchy liquid in a can of chickpeas, for a plant-based twist on emulsified mayonnaise. Find it at Tinyurl.com/AquafabaMayoRecipe. In her Mebane, North Carolina, kitchen, Kim Campbell, author of The PlantPure Kitchen, makes a plant-based ranch dressing with tofu for body and nutritional yeast, herbs and lemon juice to achieve the characteristic flavor. Find it at Tinyurl.com/HealthyRanchDressing.

More Exotic Condiments Pomegranate Molasses

Sweet and tart pomegranate molasses can be used like vinegar in salad dressings, as a marinade ingredient or as syrup over pancakes and waffles. Angela Buchanan, aka Angela Cooks, a professor at the University of Colorado, in Boulder, who blogs at SeasonalAnd Savory.com, follows the Whole30 program, which bars sugar. Because she also likes Middle-Eastern food, Buchanan experimented and created her recipe for Pomegranate Molasses without added sugar (Tinyurl.com/PomegranateMolassesRecipe).

Superfood Popcorn Seasoning

Green popcorn is fun. With a spirulina powder, garlic powder, sea salt and cayenne pepper spice mix, even a movie snack can be healthy. “Spirulina is one of the most potent of all superfoods. Available in a powder form, it’s a blue-green algae that provides protein, B vitamins and iron. It’s used as a natural energizer, digestive aid and detoxifier,” says Tara Milhern, a holistic health coach in New York City. She also likes it sprinkled on baked potatoes or vegetables as a finishing flavor. See Tinyurl. com/HealthyPopcornSeasoning. Without preservatives, homemade healthy condiments don’t last as long as commercial versions. McClees advises, “I store mine in a glass mason jar for one week in the fridge. I choose a half-pintsize jar, since the less empty space there is at the top of the jar, the longer it keeps.” Judith Fertig writes cookbooks plus foodie fiction from Overland Park, KS (JudithFertig.com).

It’s possible to live with eyes and heart wide open to the amazing beauty of each day, to receive it as a gift, rather than a guarantee. By looking, we can find gifts even amid uncertainty, struggle, pain or loss. In those times when we find ourselves fighting for gratitude, know that the grace found in thankfulness for even tiny blessings sustains us and builds resilience to walk through the storm and emerge intact. Reading One Thousand Gifts, by Ann Voskamp, or A Simple Act of Gratitude, by John Kralik, may help inspire us to get started. With practice, expressing gratitude will come easily, like breathing or laughing with children.

2

What are two things I did well today?

Speaking words of life about ourselves, noticing what we do well and where we shine, may meet internal resistance. It seems second nature, especially for women, to see our own struggles or shortcomings, but not our beauty or all the ways we show up to serve others and use our strengths.

www.nasrq.com

Deepening the roots of self-awareness and self-compassion that permit us to accept that we are good enough enables us to step out in calm confidence.

3

What is one thing I would do differently?

Some nights we may find that given the chance, we wouldn’t have done one thing differently that day. More often we can identify something: a word spoken in impatience, spending too much time on the phone, being distracted from what’s important to us, procrastinating out of fear, or even forgetting to properly nourish ourselves. Instead of criticizing, the goal is to notice how we could better live fully aligned to our bigger goals and established values. Moment by moment, we can choose a growth mindset. We can learn to be as gentle with ourselves, as compassionate and forgiving, as we are with our children or spouse. We become aware that we get to choose who and how we want to be and that tomorrow is a new gift, a brand-new opportunity to more fully be our best self. Asking and answering these three purposeful questions may take five to 20 minutes. If we’re tempted to rush through it, remember that the resulting clarity and peace is worth the time invested. Be Consistent. Evenson maintains,

KID TALK How to Communicate with a Child D

udley Evenson didn’t set out to devise a strategy to foster constructive, nurturing communications between parents and their offspring. Yet as she and her husband, Dean, raised their three children decades ago, timeless guiding principles emerged. “We were like other parents—learning and growing along with our children,” says Evenson, a certified professional life coach, musician and co-founder of the instrumental recording label Soundings of the Planet (Soundings.com), in Bellingham, Washington. “Then, in the early 1980s,

Stay Clear. Evenson contends that

“Mom and Dad or the primary parental figures should try to establish a unified, mutually supportive program.” “Consistency is one of the cornerstones of effective parenting,” says Dana Cooley-Keith, with 20 years of experience working with families in crisis in Northwest Georgia. “Even if it’s hard, it’s particularly important for divorced parents to be consistent and on the same page. Otherwise, it creates stress for the entire family, adding more confusion to a child’s life when the noncustodial parent allows something the custodial parent doesn’t.”

Be positive, honest, flexible, reasonable and understanding. “It

is key to explain things to children and to listen to them,” says Evenson’s daughter, Cristen Olsen, of Seattle, who raised her daughter using her family’s guiding principles, and now uses them as a nanny. “It helps them learn how to process situations and find their own resolutions to difficult problems.” Olsen says she becomes a mediator when the siblings she cares for don’t agree. “We solve the problem together by hearing all sides, talking through the issues and reaching for understanding. Many times, the kids come up with their own solutions.”

Improve Your Health with Feng Shui

Provide meaningful boundaries and restrictions. Kids typically push

to find their limits. “Establish limits and boundaries when children are young,” says Cooley-Keith. “They will be more accepting of rules if you establish them earlier, rather than later. Most often, boundaries provide security for kids.”

Accept their point of view. Evenson

always encouraged her children to voice their opinions. “This is a great point,” says Hogin. “For children to learn to have opinions and speak out, we must value what they say. We don’t have to agree with everything they say, but should listen and encourage them to find their voice and use their words.”

Trust children. “Believe in them,” affirms

Evenson. “Be on their side. Let them feel your support and love.”

Don’t nag. “We all want children to

develop their own sense of responsibility,” Olsen says. “I find making strong eye contact reinforces my words, so I don’t have to nag or repeat myself often.”

Be available, rather than putting kids on the spot in public. “If you

correct or redirect a child in front of others, they will probably be focused on being embarrassed and fail to understand the lesson or reasoning a parent is trying to project,” says Hogin. “Taking a step back and working out an issue one-on-one is usually more appropriate and effective.” Maintain good habits. Evenson emphasizes the character strength that comes from observing and practicing good habits and healthy lifestyles that avoids gossip and incorporates creative exploration of life. This includes “Doing everything in love,” she notes. Such all-encompassing love balances love for our own children with love for all children and respect for all life.

Be patient with yourself. “No one is

perfect,” Evenson remarks. “Just do your best. Guide, console and discipline while keeping a sense of humor.” Connect with the freelance writer at AmberNagle.com. 44

Your space can either create a harmonious body ecology or one that feels out of balance and unwell. This month, we will focus on increasing healing energy through these feng shui tips.

Keep your space clean and free of clutter. Disorder represents stagnant, stuck chi. It is difficult to make decisions in a cluttered home or to make positive moves toward growth and personal development. Stuck chi creates a blocked flow of energy in your body which can lead to pain, dysfunctional systems and even depression. Keeping your space clean and free of clutter will help you heal ailments, relieve pain and find peace. • Remove your shoes before entering your home. When entering your home space, you should remove your shoes. This allows you to leave the stress of your daily grind (and dirt) outside and allows for peaceful energy to make its way inside. Place a shoe rack just inside or outside your entryway and leave it all right there. • Surround yourself with natural light. Light is a super nutrient and required for optimal health. Be sure that your home has adequate natural light by allowing sunlight to come inside. Avoid bright lights an hour before bedtime. Yes, this means you must leave technology outside your bedroom. Viewing the bright lights of your phone at bedtime can be detrimental to a restful sleep. Avoid fluorescent lighting and utilize full-spectrum light whenever possible. • Make your bedroom a place for rest, relaxation and romance. Most of your life is probably spent in your work space and bedroom. By creating a safe and relaxing space to rest, you can truly rejuvenate and be ready for your next adventure. Make sure your bed is in the optimal feng shui position and avoid watching television before you retire for the evening. Incorporate soothing earth tones, blues and lavenders into your wall color, bedding and artwork to promote a relaxing atmosphere. Creating a comfortable inviting, bedroom that you hate to leave will do wonders for your health. Follow these tips, and you will quickly feel a shift in your health and well-being! You + Nature = A Healthy Home by Laurel James

M

y name is Laurel. My parents named me after an oak tree, and yes, I love trees! In my formative years, I had the privilege of growing up on Tampa Bay here in Florida and spending my summers at my grandparent’s farm in the mountains of North Carolina. As I became a young adult, I loved to study, create art and photograph nature, while hiking in the mountains. My mom would mention that, when I came back from the farm, all I did was take pictures of trees, flowers, waterfalls and an occasional black bear sighting. I was so immersed in nature that I felt at home there, connected and peaceful, filled with wonderment for the world. In my 30s, I didn’t get outdoors as much in my everyday world because I was busy guiding and supporting my clients as an interior designer. However, I remembered how nature and beauty had influenced me in the past. Incorporating what my clients loved from the natural world was a key factor in the design process as they moved through a life change. After years of designing, I moved through a life transition of my own, so I took a deeper look at the universal principles I had helped my clients walk through in their home designs. I found there are certain tools which can help us move through this fast-paced, technologically advanced world.

From these thoughts, came a book I titled Interiorology: How to Create a Living Space that Reflects the True You. It is a simple book to start the process of transforming your home in order to support who you are becoming as you transition through life. One of the principles from the book is how to connect and remember what you love in nature, then bring it into your home and lifestyle to flourish. There are two ways to support a healthy home in this regard. The first is to connect with the outdoors in your everyday life, as the mind, body and environment are all interconnected. When we breathe fresh air, our thinking is clearer, and when we stretch or move, our minds and emotions feel lighter. My father in-law was an orthopedic surgeon, and he would often quip that “motion is lotion.” Where are places you can go outside to move, breathe, walk, bike or practice yoga? Visit a park and walk under the trees. I heard recently that a new trend (backed by scientific and psychological studies) “taking a forest bath” can reduce stress and health issues. How about our beautiful beaches? Did you know that our heartbeats take on whatever sounds we hear? Imagine what positive effects the ocean waves must have on our emotions and bodies. The second way to support a healthy home is by bringing nature into the living space. What natural elements do you love? Think of your five senses and how you could bring them into your living space. For example, consider smell which is our first sense coming into any environment. What aromas can support your mood? How can you improve air quality? Live plants bring in oxygen and are a natural air filter. Pure therapeutic grade essential oils can support your mood and health. Consider the whole foods you enjoy eating and integrate them into every meal. What colors or textures do you enjoy looking at from the outdoors, and how can you bring them into your living space? What do you love to touch? What kind of natural sounds invigorate or relax you? When we connect with nature in our lifestyles, we root ourselves to the earth that sustains us. It can maintain our physical, mental and emotional selves by provid-

ing the elements we need to thrive. Like the roots of a tree, our homes encourage us to grow with new possibilities when we incorporate what we love about outdoors into our lifestyles. Just as a flower needs the right environment to bloom, we need the right living space in which to flourish. Laurel teaches monthly workshops at Four Pillars in Lakewood Ranch. On May 2, noon, she will lead an Aromatherapy Kundalini yoga class for the Chakras. On May14, 7 p.m., she will lead a Mixology night, featuring mixed drinks made with healthy essential oils. On May 17, she will lead her Interiology workshop, helping attendees discover how to clear and design their homes to bring in nature and reflect their true selves. Participants will learn how and why to choose the right colors and textures in a home environment. Laurel James is a National Interior Designer and author of Interiorology (mind, body and home wellness). She is an Essential Oil Wellness Advocate who loves to bring nature into living spaces to help her clients’ flourish in their environments and lives. In addition, she is a Kundalini Yoga Instructor (as taught by Yogi Bhajan). Four Pillars is located at 8209 Natures Way, Suite 221, Lakewood Ranch. They Bring Health and Happiness Home by Sandra Murphy MirasWonderland/Shutterstock.com

n China, high blood pressure is one of the major health issues, especially since it is tied not just to stress, but to the high fat content in many Chinese dishes. For example, in Shanghai, food is often served dripping with oil. This is because they believe oil makes the food taste better. Also, Chinese culture tends to be stress-centric, much like that in the United States. One of the most common folk remedies used to address high blood pressure is found in goldfish. People with high blood pressure often sit in front of a tank filled with goldfish and just spend time watching them swim. The smooth, silky and swaying movements of the goldfish calm down turbulent energy in individuals, especially those with high blood pressure. Soon, the biorhythm in the person staring at this tank will mirror that of the smooth swaying in the goldfish. But if you are to practice this folk remedy, make sure it is the fan-tail goldfish, not a tropical fish, koi fish or another domestic fish that makes quick, snappy movements. These days, due to to technology, we have the ease and luxury of software that produces extremely realistic goldfish aquariums, along with noise of the water. These software aquariums are incredibly real-looking—the HD versions, in particular—and can save the hassle of actually maintaining a live goldfish aquarium.

I have lived with several Zen masters—all of them cats. ~Eckhart Tolle cat purrs, they discovered these resonate at 25 and 50 Hertz (Hz), the two low frequencies that best promote bone growth and fracture healing. Purrs also have a strong harmonic near 100 Hz, a level some orthopedic doctors and physical therapists use for ultrasound therapy. A child under a year old living with a cat is only half as likely to develop allergies to pets, ragweed, grass and dust mites, much as inoculations guard against disease and boost immune systems. The study, published in Clinical & Experimental Allergy, followed children from infancy to age 18. French researchers discovered autistic children age 5 and older that had a cat were more willing to share, offer comfort to others and show empathy.

Sharing cat responsibilities tightened family bonds. Cats like routine, especially for meals, making them good pets for Alzheimer’s patients that may lose track of time. Many people like the added warmth of a nearby sleeping cat at night. Fifteen minutes of exercise, followed by a snack, will put kitty on the owner’s sleep schedule.

Cats are Low-Maintenance Overall, cats are self-sufficient animals, requiring only love, food and a spotless litter box. Self-cleaning, most cats don’t require regular trips to the groomer for haircuts and a bath. Scratching posts keep nails short. A snack, playtime or welcoming puddle of sunshine persuades kitty that it’s naptime. “In rescue, we say dogs are toddlers and cats are teenagers.

Cats live without constant oversight,” says jme Thomas, co-founder of Motley Zoo Animal Rescue, in Redmond, Washington. “They’re good pets for busy people. Adopt two at the same time so they bond and aren’t lonely.”

Cats are Eco-Friendly A New Zealand study reports that cats have a lower carbon footprint than dogs, comparing dogs to a Hummer and cats to a Volkswagen Golf. Dogs eat more beef, incurring red meat’s huge footprint. “Because cats eat less than most dogs overall, it saves money, too,” says Gilbreath. Everyone needs someone to care for and love. With about 77 million cats living in U.S. households and more in shelters or rescues, there’s plenty of people- and planet-friendly love to be found. They often are not willing to stop due to their fear of a remission. Oftentimes, they are unable to stop even if they wanted to. Ultimately, this cycle of behavior forms an addiction which is why addictions are almost impossible to eliminate. Habits are patterns of repetition that, over time, create an automatic behavioral routine in the brain, and these eventually become addictions. So the primary difference between a habit and addiction is that a person is in control of their habit, whereas an addiction is in control of the person.

Physiological and Psycho-emotional Dependencies

Cigarettes, Drugs, Alcohol and Other Dependencies: Addressing them Effectively with Natural Medicine

by Rene Ng, AP, L.Ac.

O

piates (heroin, opium and morphine), opioids (oxycodone, hydrocodone, fentanyl and vicodin), cocaine, nicotine or tobacco, and alcohol are the top five addictions suffered by many people here in the United States. These are formed over the years, and are usually difficult—if not, seemingly impossible—to break free of. In addition, all these addictions pose significant health hazards, and can lead to cancer, liver failure, heart disease or even death. Once the body develops a dependency on them, it is a monumental task to stop the addictive pattern. Medical drugs, counselling and rehabilitation treatments are the common courses of action, but these can be lengthy, painstaking and expensive. Not to mention, they can also take a toll on the body, and their effectiveness is often questionable or unsustainable. So what other options would an individual have to address these addictions?

Addiction and Habit

First, it’s crucial to understand how addictions are formed. It all begins when a need arises in the human body—whether due to a health or mental issue, stress, nutrition, emotional trauma or additional factor. This need directs an individual to start consuming a particular substance in order to self-medicate the symptoms caused by this need. Once this need is ameliorated, the body starts developing an “attraction” towards the substance. For example, the individual will tend towards an opioid to help reduce pain, or alcohol numb emotional turmoil, or tobacco to help ease stress, to name a few examples. After having taken this substance, the individual develops a habit and starts relying on it for the relief they crave. 50

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

www.nasrq.com

In order to be effective in treating addictive disorders or undesirable habits, one needs to address both the physiological and psycho-emotional dependencies on a substance the body has developed over time. Drugs, alcohol, tobacco and other substances taken internally form part of the nutritional needs the body has acclimated to and depended on over the years. Stopping the substance abruptly can cause issues—sometime dramatic—due to this dependency. An example is the symptoms of caffeine withdrawal when stopping coffee entirely all of a sudden. Therefore, a formulated plan to wean the individual off a substance is needed. This plan also needs to address the deficiencies that the body might encounter once this supply is cut off. The organs affected or other body imbalances can be detected in the symptoms that result once the intake of the substance is reduced or stopped. Herbs and acupuncture can identify and address these deficiencies, then help the body to regroup and regain balance. In addition, by reducing symptoms such as pain, and helping the body manage stress, anger, sadness and other emotions, the chance of successfully treating the addictive disorder increases. At the same time, the psycho-emotional aspects behind the undesirable habit also need to be addressed. Hidden or suppressed emotions are often the main underlying causes of addictive disorders, and these can overrule the will of an individual trying to stop the disorders. Counseling is often the remedy here, but among the most effective solutions is counseling combined with hypnosis. In hypnosis, the individual’s subconsciousness is also addressed and reinforced to help with overcoming the barriers blocking a desire to stop the disorder. Reinforcing suggestions are made to the brain during hypnosis that will help the individual face their hidden psycho-emotional issues head-on, gain confidence, and find the additional motivation and will-power needed to overcome the disorder.

Conclusion

In order for addictions or undesirable habits to be managed and controlled in an individual, both the physiological dependencies and psycho-emotional issues the individual possesses must be taken into account. If both are not addressed, the chances of successfully managing an addictive disorder is reduced—sometimes greatly—and the individual could succumb to a relapse as

hidden biological and emotional dependencies resurface, and the individual reverts to old habits. If you are suffering from addictive disorders and want to free yourself of them, it will be worthwhile to contact both a boardcertified, licensed Acupuncture Physician, along with a Hypnotist or Hypnotherapist, and develop an integrative, concurrent treatment plan with them. This could change your life forever, and you will be grateful that you made the effort. Rene Ng will be teaming up with well-known Hypnotist Shana Rosenthal to present a talk on understanding addictions or habits and how to treat them naturally on May 21, 7–8:30 p.m., at the Four Pillars Wellness Center, 8209 Natures Way, Suite 221, Lakewood Ranch, Florida 34202.For more information and to register, call 941-373-3955. A Balanced Lifestyle = Weight Loss, Naturally by Christina Captain, DAOM, MSAOM, MSHN, MA

A

balanced life is something we all desire and think we strive for daily. If you’re like many women though, stressors, time scarcity, workload, finances and those demanding family needs can contribute to and even create imbalance in your life. But if you desire peace, happiness and a fulfilling life, you can achieve it. I say, “Just do it!” A balanced lifestyle is obtainable, and as you keep reading, you’ll learn how to achieve this goal. It requires constant at-

tention, but with effort and dedication, you can have it all, despite any current obstacles or doubts. Here is a classic scenario of a modern career woman and mother, and how the Western mindset can throw a person offbalance without even realizing it. Picture a 42-year-old professional woman. She has a high-stress job and works 75 hours a week. Her perception is that her employer doesn’t appreciate her efforts, so she feels she must work harder, do more and give more. Because she wants to succeed, her family doesn’t see her, and she misses dinners. To

save time, she grabs fast food, late-night take out, or even a candy bar and soda out of the vending machine which leads to the extra 35 pounds she is carrying. Between work and family, exercise and self-care are not priorities. A heavy workload, poor diet choices and lack of physical activity are major contributors to an imbalanced life where depression, physical ailments and hopelessness can take over. Physical symptoms might include heartburn, stomach upset, hot flashes, irritability and insomnia. She might feel it’s too late and have no idea how to find her way back to balance. This story is all too familiar for both men and women. This is typical Western mentality— we think we must keep going, accomplish more and produce more, believing we’ll reap the rewards of working hard. The problem with this mindset is that sometimes the end comes before we reach the enjoyment part. This mindset is detrimental to both our spirit and physical body. By continuing down this path, we risk not getting to our happy ending. In ancient Eastern traditions, balance of the mind, body and spirit are essential to longevity, nirvana and enlightenment. You simply cannot achieve a higher state of being without balance. So what does that mean and how do you find it? You are probably asking yourself, “Where do I even start?” There must be an adequate balance between work, rest and play. You must take time for you! Even if you work long or extended hours, there are still ways to find balance. 1. Take scheduled breaks, stand from the desk and move, stretch, or simply close your eyes and breathe deeply. This will break up the monotony and jumpstart your brain. 2. Pack your lunch, dinner and a snack. Your meals should have plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and proteins. 3. Where you eat is just as important as what you eat. Leave your desk and find a spot where you can enjoy the meal. Eastern philosophy dictates that you need space and time to nourish and replenish. This means don’t drive, watch TV or work while you’re eating. Enjoy your food without any distractions.

4. Take a walk after you eat and allow the body time to digest. Even if it’s just a brisk walk around the building, your body will appreciate the movement. 5. Break the liquid stimulant habit (coffee or highly caffeinated drinks). Drink clean, filtered water from a glass or stainless steel container. 6. Finally if you can, reduce work hours to rekindle your home and family life. If you want appreciation, your family’s gratitude is most beneficial. Just being present will nourish you in ways beyond your imagination. Beyond work balance, here are eight key suggestions to live a balanced lifestyle:

1. Adequate rest to replenish and rejuvenate the body, mind and spirit 2. Good nutritional foundation—fresh whole foods and clean filtered water 3. Targeted quality nutritional supplements provided by a licensed healthcare practitioner (not just a multivitamin) 4. Exercise for a strong and energetic body—if you need motivation or direction, join a class or hire a trainer) 5. Meditation for peace and connecting to nature, people and the world—meditate outside, by touching the earth and communing with nature which automatically grounds you and invites peace into your life 6. Family time spent with the people who give your life meaning 7. Working with intention to make a difference—this is powerful and beneficial to your own balance and society at large 8. Play time which is just as important as work time You have the keys, now you just have to set your mind to make the changes and find the balance. And for the record, weight loss is a natural side-effect of getting your balance back. Good luck on the journey, and please remember, I am always here to help you. Having someone to guide you back toward a balanced lifestyle is a gift you deserve. I offer complimentary one-on-one meet and greets to discuss the ways in which I can help you regain balance. Healing the Pain of Trauma through a Lens of Self-Care by Mary-Elizabeth Schurrer “Let go. Just let yourself go.” he yoga instructor leaned over my tense, rigid, obstinate body—her soothing cadence and disarming presence an invitation to release that guarded posture I carried around like an extra appendage. And those two words—let go—though simple and unassuming, comprised the sum of each experience which had brought me to this moment. A profound realization began to dawn. Maybe the power to heal is mine to choose, mine to reclaim. Maybe it starts with surrender and a connection to myself.

T

When those dormant memories of trauma resurfaced a year ago, I was in the fastlane to self-destruction, hurdling at full speed toward a breakdown. One of my personal heroes, writer and activist Glennon Doyle, refers to such periods of crisis as “evictions from life.” And in that season, no descriptor was more fitting. But at my lowest point, a friend urged me to attend yoga with her. “Enough with the negative headspace—it’s about time you learn to trust your body again.” That was her rationale, so despite my blatant cynicism, I agreed. I have been a physically active person for most of my life. I’m that weird sub-species of human who considers running to be therapeutic. But the idea of movement as self-care was foreign to me. I often used exercise as a means to distract from the emotional trauma, to outdistance the shameful thoughts and

painful reminders. So entering that yoga studio, with its faint background music and soft ambient glow, seemed like meandering into another dimension. And the gentle, restorative practice that unfolded soon after awakened something in myself I had forgotten how to feel—compassion...which inspired safety...which ignited empowerment. That same friend and I still make time in our schedules to practice yoga together, and I have since recognized that my transformational experience is not isolated. Mine is just one story of innumerable others, recounting how self-care mends a severed connection between the body, mind and spirit. The healing effects of any self-care—from physical movements to breathwork rituals to harmonizing energies—are universal. In fact, I think as more women continue expressing their own “Me Too” narratives, the patterns of systemic abuse and subsequent trauma ingrained in our culture will be no match for the renewed love, acceptance, strength and wholeness that come with taking the power back. To affirm this conviction, I spoke with two female self-care practitioners, Michelle Giambra of Suncoast Jin Shin Jyutsu and Liana Bryant of Rosemary Court Yoga, both located here in Sarasota. During our insightful discussion, these women share how the process of returning to one’s body can make all the difference in trauma healing. Natural Awakenings: How does getting in touch with her body again, help a woman feel safe and supported to move forward in her recovery? Michelle Giambra: Becoming attuned to her body’s messages will enhance a woman’s self-awareness to practice a more balanced life. This can help her to be present and mindful of new possibilities for herself and her future. Liana Bryant: By focusing on the physical, she is positioned to tune inward. This enables her to see more clearly which provides the strength to deal with difficult experiences. A body, mind and spirit connection allows her to embrace the moment and proceed with a sense of calm.

NA: What types of coping mechanisms can a woman learn through practicing a self-care ritual that engages her body, mind and spirit? Giambra: This kind of holistic practice will release any past tension or stress that has been stored in the body, while releasing new tension or stress as it occurs. Addressing this before it can move deeper into the body and psyche helps to reduce pain, discomfort and dis-ease. Bryant: A consistent yoga practice provides so much self-care. Yoga offers tools that can help a woman remain present by focusing on the physical alignment of each pose, following the rhythm and sound of her breath, and tuning her gaze inward. Being present is beneficial as a coping mechanism, as it forces the practitioner to be here and now, not thinking about the past or worrying about the future. NA: How does the manifestation of emotional trauma impact different areas of the body, and what techniques are ideal for alleviating that trauma? Giambra: A common reaction to fear and trauma is to hold one’s breath which can lead to stagnation in the flow of life energy throughout the body. This stagnation can present itself as pain in various regions including the neck, chest or back. It could also present as difficulty breathing, swallowing, digestion or sleeping. A conscious breathing practice is a simple but powerful way to release energetic tension and reset the flow of breath. In Jin Shin Jyutsu, we begin this conscious breathing practice with an exhale. The individual will start by either sitting or lying in a comfortable position. She will then exhale gently and slowly, counting to “one.” Next, she will observe her inhalation arise in its own natural rhythm, noticing that she doesn’t have to take a breath—the body knows how to respond. She will then exhale again, count to “two” and observe the next inhalation arise. This pattern will continue until she has completed 36 breaths. Holding the fingers, one at a time, is another simple and effective way to help restore the harmonious flow of life energy. Bryant: Trauma can develop into tension anywhere in the body, but a yoga practice helps mitigate the effects of tension in all

these areas. For instance, hip openers can decrease tension in the pelvic region, inversion poses can facilitate a new perspective, and backbends can open the throat, enabling a woman to find her voice and speak her mind. NA: What advice would you offer a woman who feels unsafe or vulnerable in her own body, but wants to integrate a healing practice into her life? Giambra: Locate a trained bodywork practitioner with whom you feel both safe and confident. Jin Shin Jyutsu® is a gentle, non-invasive, hands-on modality that creates balance in the body, mind and spirit, while harmonizing the flow of life energy. A trained practitioner will offer customized sessions during which you will receive energy harmonizing in a supportive, therapeutic setting and learn practical self-help applications which can be used for daily maintenance to provide tension and stress relief. Bryant: I would encourage getting on the yoga mat each morning, even if briefly, and keep the focus on your breath while moving through the poses. This is an extremely comforting routine to start off each new day. NA: Does your studio teach any classes or workshops that might be geared toward the pursuit of trauma recovery from a holistic approach? Giambra: Suncoast Jin Shin Jyutsu offers a variety of self-help classes, workshops and guided energy harmonizing mediations that release the effects of tension and stress. We also book private classes for groups with specific interests such as trauma recovery. By its nature, Jin Shin Jyutsu encompasses all the levels of being—physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Bryant: All yoga classes can support healing from trauma, so I encourage those in such a recovery process to contact our studio for assistance in finding a class that would be beneficial. NA: In your opinion, is the “Me Too Movement” a positive stride toward female empowerment, gender equality and the awareness of systemic exploitation? Giambra: The Me Too Movement has created a platform for many women to reclaim their voices and speak their truth

about hidden pain, trauma and shame. It has also helped them recognize they don’t need to suffer alone. I believe that speaking one’s truth and taking steps to liberate oneself from the harmful effects of trauma is incredibly empowering. Bryant: I think it’s always important to heal from the trauma a person is holding onto, as that growth leads to empowerment, and the Me Too Movement has certainly encouraged this. So in the words of an instructor who might never know the impact she once stirred within me, “Let go. Just let yourself go.” Accept the invitation to self-care. Extend the permission to heal. This one body—this one life—of yours is worth it. Michelle Giambra is a Jin Shin Jyutsu® Practitioner, Self Help Instructor and Licensed Massage Therapist with 20 years of experience in the study and practice of Jin Shin Jyutsu.
