“Neurofeedback has worked so well for our adopted child that suffers from childhood traumas that both my husband and I have started using the training as well.” -Sue C. “Since working with the Brain Wave Center our son’s grades and temperament have greatly improved. ADHD symptoms have been reduced.” -Jen G.
Without drugs and using nationally recognized brain mapping techniques, we develop non-invasive Neurofeedback training programs customized to you. Re-training unhealthy brainwave patterns often eliminates or improves symptoms of: ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, Trauma/PTSD, and more. H
appiest of holidays, dear readers! Last month was focused on gratitude, and this month is all about gathering with our loved ones and looking ahead to an exciting New Year. As we enter this festive and celebratory time, the latest issue of Natural Awakenings is bringing you inspiration and enlightenment to make this season both “merry and bright.” Our theme for this month is on uplifting humanity, nurturing connections and doing our parts to establish peace on earth. In fact, our feature article is about “Nonviolent Conflict Resolution” which delves into how communities join together in times of uncertainty or discord. These communal efforts promote love, compassion, unity, social justice and care for the planet instead of the division that can overtake our media outlets or Facebook newsfeeds. Speaking of harmony, this month’s “Healing Ways” article offers tips for a peaceful holiday to help you access and embrace a sense of inner calm during the season’s characteristic “hustle and bustle.” Self-care is important this time of year, and it’s just as essential to invest in yourself as it is to connect with those around you. This means being mindful of how the body is functioning and giving it the proper nutrients to fuel a busy schedule which can be difficult when faced with pumpkin pies, gingerbread cookies and other indulgences. Our “Conscious Eating” article discusses the benefits of adding local, seasonal produce to holiday meals––complete with recipes to tempt all your friends and family with. And of course, since 2018 is just around the corner, we’re also talking “New Year Inspirations” with ideas on how to become more active and involved in our community. From volunteering at a non-profit organization to participating in an ocean clean-up initiative to donating food or clothing to a homeless shelter, there are numerous ways to make a difference right in our own backyard. Change begins locally, and the New Year is an ideal time to start making an impact. I hope you find enjoyment in these articles and everything else our December issue has to offer. Please send any comments, questions or feedback to Publisher@NASRQ.com. I encourage you to keep your loved ones close this season, and thanks for allowing the Natural Awakenings team to partake in your holiday celebrations. We’ll touch base again in 2018!

newsbriefs Elysian Fields Offers Holiday De-Stressing Tips
I
f you plan on having family and friends over for the holidays, the mix of energies entering your home can get intense. Remember to cleanse your space energetically before guests arrive and after they leave to help keep your sacred space purified. Smudging with sage or burning copal incense are both time-tested cleansing methods for clearing negative energy and creating balance. Using a diffuser or lighting candles infused with essential oils of lavender, sage, palo santo or cedarwood can help to constantly cleanse the air while people are mixing and mingling. Create ambiance in your home to boost the positive energy field. Adding an amethyst cluster or selenite lamp to your living or dining room can promote a sense of peace. A lovely violet color, amethyst quartz has been said to promote relaxation and soothe anxiety or depression. In addition, selenite is known as an “emotional cleanser” for the mind, body and spirit which extends to the outer environment, creating calmness and tranquility. Selenite lamps emit a soothing glow to enhance meditation, concentration and clarity. Positioning a selenite lamp or t-light candle holder in the family zone will instill a sense of peace and harmony. Here at Elysian Fields, we are fully prepared to outfit your home with the necessities to keep peace and joy pulsing throughout your home this season. Our knowledgeable staff looks forward to assisting you and helping spread holiday cheer! Location: 1273 S Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. For more information, call 941-361-3006 or visit ElysianFieldsOnline.com.
Are You Looking for More than Just Puppy Love?
P
uppies are adorable, and they bring happiness into our lives. But certified matchmaker and single’s party host Christy Tromp points out that “puppy love” doesn’t offer the same fulfillment and satisfaction that comes from developing a meaningful and loving relationship with a compatible partner. Tromp was 19 years old when she landed her first job working for a matchmaking company. “I was so young and naïve back then,” she elaborates. “But I was smart enough to know a good thing when I saw it! I thought, ‘If really works, a company that helps people find love, then it must be the greatest job ever!” That was 23 years ago. Today, she is a well-known matchmaker who continues to help clients find meaningful relationships and love that endures. Besides one-on-one matchmaking, Tromp also provides image consulting, dating coaching, speed dating parties and relationship seminars. She uses experience in the field to guide her clients, so that when they meet the right person, they have all the tools needed for a healthy relationship. For more information on matchmaking services and to schedule a consultation, call 941-713-1000 or visit SuncoastSingles.com.

The Best Gifts Improve Life
Anti-Aging and Chi Na Seminar
“G
ive a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Train a man to fish, and he will eat well the rest of his life.” As this proverb teaches, the best gifts improve life. They move people forward with the skills and resources to live well. The pleasurable gift is enjoyable to receive, and the “quick fix” is gratifying, but gifts that train a person how to live well bring more fulfillment. Health and happiness are intertwined with the well-being of mind, body and life. Everyone faces struggles with injuries, stress, traumas, fears, addictions, doubts, losses and more. The most valuable gifts help people achieve health, overcome setbacks, sustain resilience and strength, find balance, and grow into the people they want to become. In this season leading up to a new year, it’s a good idea to seek out gifts that support and enhance others’ goals for greater health and happiness in 2018. So empower your loved ones to reach their best possible selves this holiday season. Empowered 2 Wellness Yoga Therapy offers gift cards for every budget to bring the transformative benefits of mind, body and life to someone special. For more information, call 941-316-6893 or visit Empowered2Wellness.com.

n December 15, 1 p.m., Dr. Anna Baker, DO., will give a seminar on Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna, her revolutionary anti-aging serum made from real pearls and Chinese herbs without any preservatives. Pearls contain amino acids that retighten muscles and slowly return the face to its younger look with daily use. These amino acids are sensitive, and are destroyed by chemical preservatives which is the reason other commercially available pearl creams don’t offer the same results. Dr. Anna will show photographed results on clients of all different ages. Pearl Cream by Dr, Anna is also available as a muscle tightening body lotion, men’s anti-aging line and sports performance line. Joining Dr. Anna will be Chi Na Master Sifu Michael Stults who has brought his clinical practice to the Pearl Cream store. Chi Na is a secret healing art only taught to highly advanced martial arts practitioners. Sifu Michael has pioneered translating ancient Asiatic healing arts into a functional modern body wisdom tradition that helps people reach higher levels of health and vitality. He will also be talking about the nature of self-care as it relates to longevity, vitality and optimal performance. Location: 2721 Mall Dr., Sarasota. Hours: Monday–Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 941-921-2662 or visit PearlCreamByDrAnna.com.

newsbriefs Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique
A
ccording to the Environmental Protection Agency, dental offices are the main contributors of environmental mercury pollution. This problem has become so severe, there is now a mandate awaiting approval that will require all dentists to equip their practices with a mercury scavenging system called an amalgam separator. This amalgam separator collects the material from the fillings for proper disposal which begs a question: if the mercury fillings are considered a severe hazard for the health of our environment, is it possible these fillings could also have a negative impact on the health of a person with the fillings in their mouth? At White Sands Dentistry, we decided to take this scientific research seriously. We have been a mercury-free office, as we discontinued placement of mercury amalgam fillings many years ago. Recently, we decided to become a mercury-safe dental office as well, and we are proud to announce that we have completed certification by the S.M.A.R.T program developed by IAOMT. This removal technique dramatically reduces the amount of mercury exposure. In addition, we now offer a $99 new patient special cleaning, exam, x-rays and nutritional counseling.

Holiday Special at the Brainwave Center
F
or some of us, the holidays can be daunting, causing undue stress or sadness. Crowded shopping malls, finding the perfect gift, setting up holiday decorations, traveling, holiday bills, entertaining family, unexpected guests––all of these factors can impact how the brain functions. There are several ways to reduce holiday related issues, but have you considered neurofeedback? Your brain regulates everything you do and think. So when overburdened, symptoms can manifest throughout the body––sometimes in surprising ways like an unwanted change in your mood, impulsive shopping, brain fog or sleepless nights. At The Brainwave Center, we utilize neurofeedback programs customized for you, to overcome a variety of issues and experience long-lasting results. Neurofeedback focuses on building new neural pathways and strengthening the brain, rather than patching up symptoms. In fact, the brain has actually relearned a more efficient method of performing. Generally, our clients report improved moods, decreased impulsivity, restored control of anxiety or depression, better mental clarity, more restful sleep and a host of other benefits––all without drugs and harsh side-effects. Get started with our “Peace of Mind” holiday special. During the month of December, we are offering a brain scan, consultation, detailed report and full access to our online assessment tools, all for $199 (valued at $400). n December 13, 2 p.m., Dr. Anna Baker, DOM and founder of Faces by Dr. Anna, will present a seminar on changing the course of facial aging with her muscle tightening acupuncture face and necklift. Dr. Anna has a database of over 500 clients, and she will show pictures of results for different ages and face types. A nationally board-certified Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Dr. Anna has been practicing in Sarasota since 1998. She has developed her specialty in a muscle tightening acupuncture face and necklift, with no needles used on the face. Up to three treatments can be done in one day with a 10-treatment minimum. Dr. Anna’s work has been nationally televised, and she has been voted Sarasota’s favorite anti-aging practitioner. To see before-and-after pictures visit FacesByDrAnna.com. Emotional CPR Workshop at Unity of Sarasota
E
motional CPR is a public health educational program designed to teach people to assist others through an emotional crisis by three simple processes–– connecting, empowering and revitalizing. This workshop will be offered at Unity of Sarasota on December 9, facilitated by Lauren Spiro, co-founder of the Emotional CPR method and two non-profit mental health organizations. This workshop is appropriate for a diverse audience including those who have experienced emotional crises or their families, healthcare providers and administrators, first responders and law enforcement personnel, among others. No previous training is necessary. Participants will learn to embody the processes involved in effectively supporting a person through an emotional crisis and into healing. The Connecting process involves deepening your listening skills to open up communication, feel the person’s presence and create a sense of safety during the crisis. The Empowering process involves supporting people to discover their passions, purposes and power through collaborative exploration. The Revitalization process involves finding the vital center ––our truth, genuine voice and authentic self which leads to a renewed sense of meaning. Emotional CPR has been endorsed by CARF International, the largest behavioral health accreditation entity in the world, the International Association of Chiefs of Police and others. Suggested Love Offering: $20. For more information on this modality, visit EmotionalCPR.org. For more information on the workshop, email LaurenSpiro1@gmail.com.

Sarasota County Welcomes Natural Health Improvement Center of Osprey
N
utrition Response Testing is a technique, utilizing applied kinesiology, that was founded in 1991 by Dr. Freddie Ulan after he almost died from a severe illness. Symptoms in the body are often caused by underlying nutrition deficiencies which lead to organ dysfunction. Decreased function of the organs results in poor absorption, digestion and utilization of vitamins and minerals which causes these symptoms to worsen. Since his full recovery, Dr. Ulan has been teaching this technique to like-minded healthcare providers to fulfill his purpose of helping people look and feel better without the use of drugs and surgery. By using this method, the practitioner can determine which specific areas of the body and organs are nutritionally deficient which helps them determined which area needs the support first, which specific nutrients will help and how much to dose. This is referred to as Designed Clinical Nutrition, designed according to the unique needs of the patient. Nutrition Response Testing is used to improve upon overall health through a safe and natural approach, even if there is a health diagnosis or the patient is on medication. So what does the program entail? Besides taking organic, cold-pressed and highquality supplements, the patients also track their food intake. Dietary recommendations are made on a week-to-week basis in order to maximize the patients’ results. Many people experience relief from problems such as lack of sleeping, headaches, digestive difficulty, poor concentration and other health concerns. Location: 664 S Tamiami Trail, Unit C-2, Osprey. ecotip Erase E-Waste
Regift or Recycle Smart Phones When replacing holiday purchases of smartphones and other electronic devices, don’t just trash the old ones. Manufacturing electronics consumes many resources and discarded waste can leak harmful chemicals into ecosystems. There are far better ways to redirect and repurpose them. Besides trading in phones for a rebate, another good option is transferring them to an official recycling program that makes sure all components are dealt with properly. Some states offer special provisions. Check the ECycling Central website at eiae.org. Major phone makers and carriers offer recycling programs, and some retailers accept select electronic devices. Best of all, give a device a new life by gifting it. RecyclingForCharities.com accepts obsolete personal electronic devices by mail; the donor selects a charity to receive the proceeds. ShelterAlliance.net, CellPhonesForSoldiers.com and Phones4Charity.org are kindred organizations. AmericanCellPhoneDrive.org lets users find nearby charity recycling initiatives via zip code. It provides scholarships for U.S. children that have lost a parent through warfare or terrorism, feeds malnourished children in Asia, builds low-income housing and donates prepaid calling cards to military personnel. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, other unwanted electronic devices can be recycled so that incorporated copper, steel and glass can be recovered and reused. Other materials like lead (in circuit board solder, glass cathode ray tubes of many TVs and computer screens, and batteries) and mercury (in fluorescent backlights of many flat-panel screen displays) can be captured and recycled, instead of polluting the environment. Small appliances like toasters, coffee makers and clothing irons aren’t considered e-waste and generally aren’t recyclable because they are made of a mix of plastic and metal. Using them for many years helps.

Pink Noise While Asleep Helps Memory
R
esearchers from Northwestern University have found that acoustic stimulation using pink noise (random sound with more low frequencies than white noise) increases slow-wave brain activity, thus improving sleep-dependent memory retention. Thirteen mature adults completed two nights of sleep; one with the pink noise and one without, in random order. Specific brainwave activity increased during the periods when the pink noise was being delivered, suggesting that it could help older adults preserve some memory functions.

igh-cacao dark chocolate contains high levels of flavanol, a compound known for its heart health benefits, but less is known about diluted foods such as milk chocolate candy. Harvard researchers followed 55,502 subjects for 13 years, comparing levels of high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular disease to lifestyle traits. They found those eating one to three servings of chocolate a month (including milk chocolate) displayed a 10 percent lower risk of irregular heartbeat than those eating an ounce or less a month. Eating one serving per week of chocolate yielded a 17 percent lower risk and two to six servings a week 20 percent, and then leveled off after eating one or more servings per day. “Eating excessive amounts of chocolate is not recommended, because many chocolate products are high in calories from sugar and fat, and could lead to weight gain and other metabolic problems,” advises Elizabeth Mostofsky, author of the study.

The Healing Art of Craniosacral Therapy:

handicap license plate is attached to the front bumper of a Black SUV but the owner of this vehicle no longer parks in a handicap space—not since discovering the benefits of Craniosacral Therapy. Rewind back to October 2015 when that same person, 54-year-old Don Wilson, began to experience chronic pain in both his chest and back. Twice his doctors misdiagnosed this issue as pneumonia. A couple months later, he awoke with no feeling throughout his body and convulsed into an episode of seizures which he described as being shocked with “10,000 volts.” Upon admission into the emergency room, a neurologist pinpointed the actual source of Wilson’s pain—a strep infection that had gone untreated and subsequently wrapped around his thoracic spinal cord. In response, his entire system was shutting down to the extent where his vertebrae started disintegrating, and an operation to fuse the spine with rods was the doctors’ only course of action. Before prepping Wilson to undergo this procedure, the surgeon informed his wife that he would survive but might never regain the ability to walk. This assumption proved false when he became mobile again, with the assistance of canes and a walker, following two months of physical therapy, but the illness’s repercussions took an immense toll on Wilson’s capacity to function on a regular basis.
TRY A THERAPY THAT WORKS! Immediate relief from: pain migraines and TMJ limited mobility and range of motion breathing issues digestive issues and constipation lack of energy Concerned about Brain Health? Suffering from concussion, headaches, migraines, foggy brain, depression, stroke, Parkinson’s or other neurological problems? Advanced Craniosacral Therapy can improve brain & spinal cord dysfunctions.
During the first two months of his treatment process, doctors administered chemotherapy to kill the infection, then prescribed narcotic medicine which, until recently, he had been taking ever since. For two years, Wilson experienced numbness in various regions of his body—not to mention, chronic discomfort which the medications reduced temporarily but could not address with permanent results. Following that initial session, Wilson’s pain in the back, hips and neck diminished, his cognitive awareness improved, and his energy was restored. His walking gait stabilized too, and he no longer required a cane for support. Now five sessions later, the progress is even more noticeable, and Wilson has been able to discontinue narcotic usage completely. “I feel sharper and calmer—not so edgy since beginning the treatments with Terry. For the first time in two years, I feel like doing physical activities,” he adds.

PEACE ON EARTH Conflict Resolutions that Work to Bridge Divides Healing happens when we handle conflict in a healthy and transformative way.
Call to Action
Roughly 30 years ago, notable voices began urging Americans to embrace a sustainable worldview of unity in diversity, recognizing our core oneness as a solution to an increasingly out-of-balance society. Success in this endeavor depends primarily on the “habits of the heart” of our citizens, developed in local milieus of families, neighborhoods, classrooms, congregations, voluntary associations, workplaces and public places where strangers gather.
Activating Answers
While mainstream media often largely focuses on the negative aspects of conflict—discord, divisiveness, intolerance, violence, incivility, injustice, chaos and complex problems—a countermovement is convening constructive conversations. Participants are initiating dialogue and deliberations intended to resolve conflicts and create cohesiveness, collaboration, cooperation and compromise among local factions that disagree on how to deal with everything from health care and social justice to environmental protection and climate science. Educational training materials and books are giving outdated models of conflict resolution a facelift. In The Revolution Where You Live: Stories from a 12,000 Mile Journey Through a New America, Sarah Van Gelder devotes a chapter to a Greens28

boro, North Carolina, battle over a story about a deadly, racially charged incident from the city’s recent past. She quotes James Lamar Gibson, a 20-something AfricanAmerican activist and core organizer for the Counter Stories Project: “We’ve been stuck in an old conversation for a couple of decades. We want to have an army of people with restorative conversation skills, so we can get past the divisiveness and imagine together a different sort of Greensboro,” he says. The project began with facilitator training, and then developed story circles in which residents were able to have the difficult discussions that don’t ordinarily take place among the police, city council, churches and social agencies. Today’s conflict resolution experts are discovering that conflict is an essential and powerful call for applying spiritual principles and exercising spiritual practices.
Provocative Questions
“What if we considered conflict as a secret ally or a guidepost, showing us what really matters to us and how much we care? What if our intense emotions are sources of invincible energy, with the power to build the world we want, together? What does having conflict in a healthy and transformative way look like?” queries Ma’ikwe Ludwig, executive director of Commonomics USA,
www.nasrq.com
an organization which educates and advocates for a world where a commons-based economy creates economic and ecological security for all. “Conflict has the power to bring to the surface what’s really at stake and to unite people toward a common goal,” advises Ludwig. Her thought-provoking questions can help shift perceptions toward the idea that we need to use conflict; maybe even welcome it. Ludwig, author of Together Resilient: Building Community in the Age of Climate Disruption, recently helped present new perspectives on conflict resolution during a webinar for Transition US members interested in creating inclusive and diverse communities through collaboration. The nonprofit inspires, encourages, supports and provides networking and training for grassroots initiatives seeking to build community resilience in the face of such challenges as oil spills, climate change and economic crises. Courtney Breese, managing director for the nonprofit National Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation (NCDD) and her colleagues, together with thousands of innovative thinkers, are helping by introducing people to simple dialogue and deliberation structures, processes and resources that invite meaningful and productive conversations leading to constructive civic

A community is a group that can fight gracefully… Chaos is not just a state; it is an essential process of community development. ~Dr. M. Scott Peck, The Different Drum: Community Making and Peace engagement. Breese remarks, “We’re open to working with anyone interested in learning processes that can help bridge divides. We also like sharing stories about what is working.”
Toolbox
The group’s downloadable free tools help newcomers: A beginner’s guide for exploring dialogue (ncdd.org/rc/ beginners-guide); a how-to-guide for Conversation Café (CC) hosts (Tinyurl. com/ManualForConversationCafe); and the American Library Association Libraries Transforming Communities: Models for Change Project (ala.org/ ltc-models). “To date, we’ve had at least 800 librarians participate in free NCDD webinars,” Breese notes. CC is a simple tool useful in exploring difficult topics and provides a safe space to process different perspectives. “Initial agreement on basic rules includes suspending judgment while listening and seeking to understand others, refraining from persuading or converting and talking only from personal experience,” explains Breese.
One new network member, J. Scott Wagner, author of The Liberal’s Guide to Conservatives, speaks about the importance of using neutral language in dialogue. “I learned from him how words can be emotional triggers and signal one-sided perspectives, leaving some group members feeling angry or excluded because they feel the speaker won’t be open to hearing their perspective,” says Breese. After three tours of the U.S. and hundreds of interviews with conservative individuals, Wagner, founder of the nonprofit Reach the Right, was inspired to use his knowledge of five arenas—neurology/cognitive psychology, personality, bias, social conformity and morality—to help progressives understand conservatives that are not only their political leaders, but also their relatives, partners, friends and managers. He offers a simple explanation for anyone drenched in inaccurate biases. “We inherit unconscious genetic personality characteristics that lead us to develop our ideology, with which we construct our world and align with others that are in agreement. Differences in our personality characteristics are the culprits that create conflict.”
Community Needs Erase Enmity
Drawing on 25 years of experience of enabling sworn enemies to create peace in places such as South Africa, Northern Ireland and Colombia, Adam Kahane, author of Collaborating with the Enemy: How to Work with People You Don’t Agree with or Like or Trust, shares insights into the “enemyfying syndrome” that instigates conflict. This habit of thinking and acting as if people we are dealing with are our enemies and the cause of our problems is all around us and dominates the media. “The enemies are always the others, ‘those people’. Enemyfying, which feels exciting and satisfying— even righteous and heroic—usually obscures, rather than clarifies, the reality of the challenges we face. It amplifies conflicts, narrows the space for problem solving and creativity, and distracts us with unrealizable dreams of decisive victory from the real work we need to do,” observes Kahane.
Kahane sees the challenge of conflict becoming more acute. “People today are generally more free, individualistic and diverse, with stronger voices and less deference. Volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity are growing.” Yet, contrary to the common view, it is possible for people that hold contradictory positions to find ways to collaborate. That’s what he and 40 others representing military officers, guerrillas and paramilitaries; activists and politicians; businesspeople and trade unionists; landowners and farmers; and academics, journalists and young people, accomplished in the Destino Colombia project. They organized to contribute to ending their country’s 52-year civil war.

Jonathan Bender, founder of The Performance of Your Life, a public speaking and personal development business, has been on a lifelong quest of fostering personal growth and societal transformation. His therapeutic classes and workshops demonstrate how to connect, honor and deeply resonate with others, even if they have different worldviews, and how to listen and hear in the same way we want to be heard. Acknowledging the adrenalin rush that’s a common response to fear of conflict, Bender says, “When we learn to be mindful and speak from our entire body, rather than just from our head, we notice that the voice resonates and originates from a much bigger place. This teaches us to cultivate greater awareness of our emotions and how we express them. “Begin by acknowledging an emotion, and then reduce its intensity through slow, deep breaths, paying attention to the correlating physical sensation. Shifting our focus back to the heart allows us to recognize parts of ourselves in the stories of others and come to understand that our personal history is

the filter through which we ‘enemyfy’,” says Bender, who speaks and presents publicly, educating audiences and clients about the universally challenging performances of everyday life. According to Robert Atkinson, Ph.D., author of The Story of Our Time: From Duality to Interconnectedness to Oneness, today’s rugged individualism amid conflicts comprises a crisis of consciousness. “No longer can we settle only on seeing things in opposition to one another; we need to shift our consciousness to be able to see the parts coming together in a new whole. Accepting the oneness of humanity as a biological fact, a social necessity and a spiritual reality will lead us further along our journey toward lasting world peace.” His observation fits with what Joanna Macy, author and scholar of Buddhism and deep ecology, believes is the call of our time: “As planetary citizens, we are being called to wake up together.” Linda Sechrist is a senior staff writer for Natural Awakenings who blogs at LindaSechrist.com.

Sing While We Work Nothing makes meal preparation tasks go faster than crooning along to our favorite carols. Express Feelings in a Healthy Way Family gatherings can sometimes test our boundaries and patience. Avoid repressing feelings by finding a way to speak a personal truth in the moment, in a calm and healthy fashion. It’s better than returning home stewing about what we wish we could or should have said.
12 Happy Holiday Tips 9
How to Really Enjoy the Season
F
by Dianne Bischoff James
eelings of comfort and joy can seem elusive when the holiday to-do list looms or runs amok. The season can seem more like an endless burden than a parade of cheerful events and glad tidings. Amidst celebratory chaos, these simple rules will help restore inner peace and create greater happiness.
1
Eschew Perfection Guests are much more interested in filling their stomachs with great food than judging the scuff marks and wall dings. The perfection of the season is found in the special moments when families and friends sit down together.
2
Pay Attention to the Smiles The approaching holidays encourage more shared smiles, kind words and thoughtful gestures. While out and about, look for the grins and well wishes. Hold the door open for others and offer a friendly greeting to store clerks. We’ll find ourselves smiling even more, because thoughtfulness is contagious.
3
Do Nothing for 15 Minutes It’s amazing how refreshed we feel when we take a few minutes to sit in a comfortable chair and simply expe-
rience a moment of stillness. Inner quiet allows the mind to relax and reinvest energy in the body, so we can return to holiday activities with renewed zest.
Assign Roles to Household Helpers The holiday load is lighter when everyone pitches in. Assign specific roles to household members with clear responsibilities, from taking out the garbage to setting the table and washing up.
10
Leave Some Tasks for Later It’s unrealistic to think the house has to be in perfect order after festive gatherings. After guests leave, put the leftovers in the fridge and watch a movie. Cleanup will feel easier and faster after a good night’s rest.
4

Give Each Person a Special Gift Think of something thoughtful that both the giver and receiver enjoy doing together and write a promissory note for the shared experience, such as a free backrub, a day spent downtown, a personal manicure or a movie the other person wants to see.
Take Advantage of Extended Shopping Hours To avoid crowds and lines, schedule a late-night power-shopping trip. This is the easiest way to manage a department store visit with sanity, have easy access to the shelves and get immediate service.
6
Take a Holiday Binge Day Designate a day with no limits and no self-judgment. For anyone that mentally monitors their calories or sweets, claim a binge day out loud with permission for total holiday munching freedom. The next day, we can reinstate discipline.
Express Gratitude at the Table Loving feelings can never be expressed enough, so use the holiday as an opportunity to tell others how important they are to you. Create a heartfelt moment at the table by sharing at least one thing that you’re truly grateful for, and ask everyone else to do the same. Go Outside for Fun in Nature Hiking in a nearby forest preserve, skating, sledding or building a snow fort with the kids not only burns energy, but is emotionally exhilarating for the whole family. Pick an outdoor activity, don appropriate togs, and share in the laughter and serenity of a sparkling winter day. CHAMPIONING HOLISTIC ATHLETES The New Face of Sports Medicine by Marlaina Donato
From college athletics to Olympic training, sports medicine has a new, holistic face.
C
oaches and athletes nationwide are attributing quicker recovery time, less inflammation and better focus to a whole body approach to health care. A nutrient-dense diet tailored to individual needs is at the heart of overall fitness. Like Venus Williams and Tom Brady, tennis and football superstars who prefer raw vegan and organic whole foods, respectively, many of today’s outstanding athletes choose to eat clean and incorporate mind-body practices.
Telling Triumphs
Paralympic snowboard cross racer gold medalist, world champion and International Ski Federation para Nordic World Cup gold medalist Evan Strong, of Nevada City, California, was raised on an organic farm in Hawaii and continues to adopt many holistic practices. “I have a superfood smoothie every day. Liquid food helps me feel lighter and I have more usable energy for training,” says Strong. His regimen also includes organic produce, sprouted grains, occasional raw goat milk products, homeopathic formulas and wildcrafted medicinal herbs. 32

Strong credits achieving his personal best to a healthy lifestyle and recovery from an automobile accident that led to amputation of his lower left leg as a teen. “After the accident, my family and I opened a raw vegetarian restaurant. We produced as many cultured foods as possible—sauerkraut, kombucha and kefir. Improving my gut health gave me the biggest strides in healing. Yoga and meditation also contributed. It all saved me.” Six-time Ironman triathlete, U.S. Senior Olympic gold medalist and marathoner Ruth Heidrich, Ph.D., of Honolulu, attributes surviving stage IV breast cancer primarily to her low-fat vegan diet. Already an avid runner and nutritionally conscious, Heidrich was shocked to hear the diagnosis. “I was 47 years old when I was told the results of the biopsy. I thought I was going to die because of the symptoms I was experiencing,” recalls the 82-year-old, who not only beat multiple malignancies without chemotherapy or radiation, but was the first cancer patient to complete an Ironman Triathlon. Maintaining good habits while traveling can be challenging. Strong adds healthy salts to structure his drinking water and brings along superfoods such as green vegetable powders to use when he can’t access organic produce. To optimize his air quality while away from home, Strong uses a personalized air purifier that creates ozone. San Francisco-based, three-time Olympic swimming gold medalist and world champion Natalie Coughlin remains dedicated to better diet choices without deprivation. “When I travel, I always bring my own snacks. I like dark chocolate-covered almonds, a natural sweet that also supplies protein and fiber. To stay hydrated, I drink herbal teas, especially mint,” says Coughlin, who also incorporates a tart green smoothie every morning with kale, parsley, collards, celery, citrus and frozen pineapple. At home, “I like to be informed about where my meat comes from and how the conditions are for the animal. If I roast a chicken, I will use every part, including the bones, to make a stock,” she says. Her holistic approach includes a consistent yoga regimen, meditation and application of essential oils.
High Expectations
Even under the best of circumstances, professional athletes encounter difficulties, but when faced with enormous obstacles, the best can get even better. “I’ve faced injuries and illness during pivotal times in my life and career, but I always approached it with the intention to be proactive, rather than being reactive,” advises Coughlin. For Strong, confronting tragedy with the right attitude offers possibility. “Thirteen years ago, I was hit by a car and lost my leg, but now I see that moment as a blessing instead of a curse. ne of the ways to enhance our mental, spiritual and physical health is to de-clutter our spaces. Clearing the clutter that decorates our lives brings up anxiety when we consider the sheer volume of the task. Yet this task holds the possibility of truly opening our lives to new possibilities. As we let go of the materials that have been clogging our spaces, creating stagnation and negative emotion, we literally make space in our lives for fresh vital energy and opportunities to enter. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, our living spaces can be viewed much like the human body. At times, we are kind to our bodies, taking care to nourish and rest properly. At those times we feel vital and strong, ready to seize the day. Even when we consume substances that we know are not energizing and healthful to us, we still rely upon the body’s own ability to detoxify. The body’s rhythmic activities of inhalation and exhalation reveal this beautiful dance of taking in and letting go from moment-to-moment. This dance sustains and nourishes us. If we continue to inhale without letting the breath go, we become completely restricted. There is no longer any movement possible. Clearing a space is just as important as allowing the breath to flow. In so doing, we release old attachments, obstacles and stagnation from all aspects of our lives. Many people seek to balance the energy, or qi, of their spaces through the use of feng shui adjustments. Such feng shui cures can be amazing enhancements to one’s own home and life. However, the impact of most cures is greatly minimized by the impediment of clutter. Practically speaking, begin by asking yourself the following questions as you review your possessions. • • • •
Is this item essential? Will I die without it? Will I use it, wear it, read it or listen to it in the next three months? Have I read it, used it worn it or listened to it in the last six months? Do I experience great pleasure just knowing I possess it?
If the answer to any of these questions is no, then let it go. Do yourself a favor this season and allow your space to exhale, to breath again. Let go of those piles of magazines and papers. Unload those dead flowers. Release that collection of clothes you’ve been saving for the day when they’ll fit again. Recycle those plastic bags jamming up your cabinet. Donate those piles of old shoes. Throw out those stray screws, nails, twist ties and erasers jamming up the kitchen drawer. Dare I mention the garage? Pardon the cliché, but when in doubt, throw it out. You can be sure, there will always be more and more and more where that came from. THE GIFTS OF CITRUS Colorful Good Health in Holiday Dishes by Judith Fertig

inter citrus fruits that arrive in a gift basket or show up on sale at the grocer present a welcome bright spot on winter’s darker days. Valencia and blood oranges, limes and Meyer lemons are delicious in their own right, and deserve their place on the breakfast table. Yet there are many other intriguing ways to enjoy them in vinaigrettes, salads, main dishes, baked goods and desserts. Winter citrus is full of health benefits, just when we need them most: during the busy holiday season. To start, they help bolster our immune system, guarding against colds or helping us recover faster. Their high vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, content is water soluble. According to a comprehensive study by the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, a daily intake of 400 milligrams of vitamin C can halve the incidence of colds in adults and cut their duration by 14 percent.
The flavonoid hesperidin in citrus helps boost “good” HDL cholesterol and lowers “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, report researchers in the Journal of Nutrition. In a new study in Nutritional Neuroscience, hesperidin in citrus also was found to ameliorate brain deterioration found in Alzheimer’s patients. Other studies further show that the grapefruit diet wasn’t wrong; eating half a fresh grapefruit before each meal can help us lose weight. In a study conducted at the Scripps Clinic, in La Jolla, California, and published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, researchers put overweight volunteers on an exercise plan for 12 weeks and asked them to eat either half a fresh grapefruit or drink apple juice and pop a placebo pill before each meal. The grapefruit group dropped an average of three-and-a-half pounds, compared to only one-half pound for the apple group.

Limonoids, an antioxidant found in most citrus, may help guard against stomach, lung, breast and skin cancer, according to the U.S. Agricultural Research Service. Animal and human cell studies found that limonoids—especially those in fresh oranges—harbor potential as anticancer compounds. Another study in Nutritional Neuroscience showed that the volatile compound limonene, found in the rind of a lemon, can enhance memory. As nights grow colder and longer, winter citrus “adds a little sunshine to every meal,” says Jamie Schler, author of the recently released cookbook Orange Appeal: Savory & Sweet. Schler grew up in Florida, surrounded by citrus groves between the Atlantic Coast and Indian River. “Winters meant Dad’s workbench in the garage groaning under the weight of brown paper grocery bags filled to bursting with navels, tangerines, grapefruits, Valencias and tangelos,” writes Schler. “I fondly recall trips in the old green station wagon to the groves on chilly weekend mornings where we could pick them ourselves.” Today, Schler and her husband own and operate the boutique Hotel Diderot, in Chinon, France, where life’s a feast—especially during citrus season. Judith Fertig writes cookbooks and foodie fiction from Overland Park, KS (JudithFertig.com).

ow time flies! In the wink of an eye, the Christmas season is right around the corner and upon us already. Besides this being an important religious season, it also represents one of the most commercialized times of year as well. While Christmas is a joyful season, it also creates stress for many people. Decisions need to be made on what gifts to purchase for whom, whether there is enough money for these gifts, whose home to spend the holidays at and more. The season can also be stressful for those without family, who have lost a loved one, or who associate Christmas with unpleasant memories, loneliness and depression. Here are some practical tips for how to cope with the fluctuating emotions that can bear down on anyone during the Christmas holiday season: 1. Take slow walks and breathe deeply. Fresh air is beneficial for the lungs and for relieving both stress and sadness. 2. Eat foods that are easy to digest. Often, stress can affect the gastrointestinal tract, impairing both the digestive and

Lynne McTaggart on the
POWER OF GROUP INTENTION by April Thompson
T
hirty years ago, speaker, author and journalist Lynne McTaggart recovered from an illness using alternative approaches to health. Since then, she’s been exploring the frontiers of healing through consciousness and alternative medicine. In the 1990s, McTaggart, who lives in London, started a newsletter called What Doctors Don’t Tell You, now an international magazine and popular platform at wddty.com that cites thousands of resources showing what works and doesn’t work in conventional and alternative medicine and how to beat chronic conditions naturally. McTaggart’s seven books include The Intention Experiment, The Field, The Bond and most recently, The Power of Eight. Her latest work examines the transformative power of small groups of people sending thoughts together for a common goal.
sending them a well-defined intention, like changing the pH balance of water or healing a war veteran of post-traumatic stress disorder. To date, 26 of those 30 experiments resulted in positive, measurable, mainly scientifically significant effects. We’ve seen the pH of water change by a full pH number and seen seeds grow twice as much as control seeds.
Can you summarize the results of your experiments of healing through collective intentions? We’ve done hundreds of experiments using small and large groups; 30 were tightly controlled scientific studies conducted in conjunction with researchers at institutions such as the University of Arizona, University of California and Penn State University. The experiments have involved all kinds of intentions, ranging from the relatively simple to the impossibly complex. The large-scale intention experiments involved upwards of 25,000 participants remotely logging onto a website to view photos of the targets, sometimes 8,000 miles away, and 38

We also conducted three peace intention experiments with interesting results: After our eight-day intention for Sri Lanka during its civil war, violence levels fell; the government had won several decisive battles that week; and within a few months that 25-year war was over. We can’t say with certainty that we had a hand in this, but our other peace experiments showed similar results. If it happens a few more times, that becomes compelling.
What conditions were the most conducive to manifesting positive results? Was it intention, the power of the group or altruism? I think it’s a little of all of these. We’ve found that larger groups do not have a larger effect, which brought about the “power of eight” concept. I’ve discovered all that’s needed is a group, whether it’s eight or 8,000. In a group, we seem to lose our sense of individuality and separation from the world. We experience an overwhelming sense of oneness with the other intenders, which may be why our influence then becomes more powerful.
How did the act of sending positive intentions affect the senders? I was most surprised by the rebound effects reported by participants, whom I starting surveying after the Sri Lankan peace experiment. Thousands of extraordinary comments related not only how participants felt during the activity, but also afterwards; they were experiencing major shifts in their relationships, health, careers and well-being. All they had done was sit individually in front of their computer holding an intention, yet they experienced the altered and mystical states of consciousness described by psychologist Abraham Maslow as “peak experiences”. Life University, a large chiropractic university in Atlanta, worked with us to study the brainwaves of partici-
pants in six “power of eight” groups and found that senders had decreased activity in their frontal and parietal lobes, which govern the sense of self. It was like the boundaries between participants were dissolving into a state of oneness. To me, this partly explained the sense of oneness, compassion and love they experienced. Andrew Newberg, director of research at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health, in Philadelphia, recorded similar effects in Sufi masters, and nuns and monks engaged in prayer and meditation, but only after years of learning certain techniques. My participants, all novices, were primed only by watching a 13-minute YouTube video of me explaining how to send intention in a group. Group intention appears to be a fast-track to the miraculous—no experience necessary.

Why does “groupthink” have such a powerful, multiplicative effect? I think a huge part of it has to do with the power of getting off of yourself and setting an intention for someone else. Another is the connection created in a group. When we engage together in an activity like praying or setting altruistic intentions, we create a powerful virtual circle that proves healing to both the receivers and senders. Connect with April Thompson, in Washington, D.C., at AprilWrites.com. In recognizing the humanity of our fellow beings, we pay ourselves the highest tribute.

nspiration may strike anywhere, at any time. The trick is nurturing the process to appear on demand when we need it most. Often, an inspiration is sparked when we perceive someone being selfless, courageous, physically extraordinary or deliciously creative. However, we don’t need to wait for outside stimulus when we can discover internal stirrings by invoking any of these self-inspiring tips.
Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right. ~Oprah Winfrey

Just Do It – The Nike slogan has never been more appropriate. We all have something we’ve thought about doing or trying. Whether traveling to a new location, trying a different sport, joining a new-to-us group or club, or making more friends, don’t put it off— just do it. Defeat allodoxaphobia – It’s the fear of others’ negative opinions. Everyone suffers from this to some extent, and it can hinder us from living our best life. Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt remarked, “You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do.” Volunteer – A common excuse for not volunteering is, “I don’t have the time.” Next year, make the time. When
researchers at the London School of Economics examined the relationship between volunteering and happiness in a large group of American adults, they found that the more people volunteered, the happier they were. Journal – People often journal as a way to reflect upon their lives. This can be helpfully revealing, but rather than looking back, look forward, using a journal as a blueprint to manifest the most inspired year yet. Write out plans and dreams with the steps needed to achieve them. Gratitude – This is the big one. One way to be and stay inspired is by starting off each day in a state of gratitude. Every morning before getting out of bed, think of at least three things to be grateful for. By doing this, we recognize the blessings we have and greet the day in a positive frame of mind. It’s a perfect way to end each day, too. When someone routinely inquires, “How are you?” answer, “I am grateful.” Our time on Earth is not infinite. With only so many days promised, let’s vow to live them inspired. awareness, they begin to extricate themselves from blind reactivity to see how every problem with their children is a call to their own awakening. Parents will know they are on the right track because they will connect more with their children, empowering them to think and live autonomously—separate from a parent’s fantasies and expectations.

ne of the greatest challenges parents face is connecting with their children in deep and meaningful ways. The aim of awakened families is to raise strong and emotionally resilient children. Parenting expert and clinical psychologist Shefali Tsabary, Ph.D., author of The Conscious Parent: Transforming Ourselves, Empowering Our Children and The Awakened Family: A Revolution in Parenting, offers mindful approaches to benefit the family—and the community. Via her practice in New York City, appearances on Oprah and online courses, Tsabary provides awareness, skills and strategies to revolution-
ize families. She posts videos and blogs at DrShefali.com.
How do parents know if they’re on the right track? To be awakened or conscious means to realize that we carry emotional baggage and conditioning from childhood that affects our relationship with our children. Our old ways of thinking and being from our own childhood shape the manner in which we react and interact today. Awakened parents are constantly evolving into their truest and most authentic selves. When parents undertake a daily practice of mindfulness and

Parents need to understand that the path to creating a connected relationship with their children is to first create one with themselves. Realizing this, they consider their own inner growth a high priority. Children need to learn who they are and what they really enjoy. Parents can help by allowing children to just sit by themselves. If inundated with activities and subjected to numerous lessons, how can young people hope to recognize their authentic voice amid the din of all this “doing”?
How do children benefit from conscious or awakened parenting? Conscious parenting mandates that we place the task of connecting with our children front and center, especially before correcting them. Admonishing and punishing them becomes secondary to the main imperative of conscious connection. It’s crucial we realize we aren’t raising a “mini-me”, but a spirit throbbing with its own signature. Thus, it’s vital to separate in our mind who we are from who each child is. Children aren’t ours to possess or own in any way. When we know this in the depths of our soul, we tailor their raising to their needs, rather than

molding them to fit our needs. Children raised in this way grow up to be fearless and infinitely resilient, knowing that their purpose in life is to live in their most authentic and true way. Conflicts decrease and conscious, connected communication increases.

What can parents do when they fall back into old patterns, shaming children or doing other things that create distance? When this happens, parents need to sit with themselves and look deeply within, asking: “What is it about me that feels the need to deride, scorn and shame my children?” In such introspection, they might discover triggers from old wounds that have nothing to do with a child’s behavior. When they can see the internal link, they can begin to make the transformations they need. As a parent, I have learned that my role is to step aside, stay in infinite possibility, heal my own wounds, fill my own bucket and let my child fly.

When children grow up feeling connected with their parents and deeply seen by them, they march into the outer world feeling self-confident and aware of who they truly are, secure in their own inherent inner-connectivity. Children raised in this manner naturally help advocate for peace and harmony in all of their relationships; incidents of bullying, anxiety and discrediting one’s self and others decrease exponentially.

Apply Gardening Tips
Go Eco Like Grandma Honor Her Wisdom in New Ways by Avery Mack

“
se it up, wear it out, make do or do without,” was the motto of past generations. Today, it’s recycle, repurpose and reinvent. Nostalgia is making a comeback. It’s tempting to revert to successful old-fashioned ways; it’s even better to update the how-to of natural eco-living.
Preserve Food “There are tradeoffs between convenience and environmental impact,” says Kathleen Hanover, executive creative director at Imagine That Creative Marketing Services, in Dayton, Ohio. “I’d love to freeze all of our family’s produce, but after two power outages, I can veggies, too. Steam canners for jams, jellies, tomatoes and high-acid foods use three inches of water and 10 minutes of energy.” Shel Horowitz, a consultant for Green and Profitable and co-author of Guerrilla Marketing to Heal the World, joined a food co-op in the 1970s. Today, it has 9,000 members. “I dehydrate 44

veggies for soup, pasta, stir-fry dishes or as tomato or zucchini chips,” he says. “Onions, shallots, garlic, leeks, celery, kale, hot peppers, tomatillos and fruit were successful; eggplant, cucumbers and rhubarb were not.”
Use It All The Traditional Line menu devised by executive chef Mark Russell, of Great Performances, a sustainability-oriented high-end catering and food service company in New York City, remarks, “Food trends have changed,” noting preserving, freezing, pickling and canning remain sound. He salutes thrifty Depression-era practices. “My grandparents picked dandelion greens to fry in bacon fat,” he says. “A salad with olive oil and fresh tomato is healthier.” Fermented grape leaves can be rolled up into dolmas filled with local grains and feta cheese instead of meat. He also blanches and freezes cauliflower leaves, warmed in butter to serve; he’s then used the whole vegetable.

Containers ease gardening, especially for tomatoes. Hanover repurposes plastic cat litter buckets. “They’re sturdy and hold up in cold weather,” she says. “Alpaca poop fertilizer supplied by a neighbor doesn’t smell and plants thrive.” Ocala, Florida, reiki master and teacher Debi Goldben employs nature’s bounty at home. “Downspouts collect rainwater for the garden, and it’s much better than chemically treated city water,” she says. Some municipalities, including in Colorado, regulate rainwater collection, mandating the size and number of barrels per property “for outdoor use only”.
Sew Up Repairs Anca Gooje, owner of Chid Kala, a natural ingredient lotion maker in Scarborough, Maine, uses colorful patches to repair tears and update the look of her two children’s clothing. She also recompressed their sofa’s inner springs to their original shape by encasing them in fabric. “It was timeconsuming, but only cost a few dollars for fabric,” she relates. “Updating avoided creating more landfill. For a fresh look, I made a new cover.”
Multipurpose a Cook Pot “My mother believed pressure cookers would explode, so I bought an Instant Pot and changed the way I cook,” says Sue Ann Jaffarian, a Los Angeles paralegal and mystery writer. “I have a demanding day job and writing deadlines. I toss in healthy ingredients and have a simple homemade meal, often vegan, in a minute. Soup, stew, risotto, pasta, chili, pudding, brown rice and oatmeal work well. It doesn’t heat up the kitchen, either.”
The Instant Pot works like a crock pot, pressure cooker, steamer, sauté pan, warming pot, rice cooker and yogurt maker, replacing seven appliances.
First Time Clients: Introductory price of $15 off any one regular priced one hour service.
For multiple services, $15 off one service of equal or greater value.
Employ Onsite Power “My Hadley, Massachusetts, farmhouse, built in 1743, might be the oldest solar home in the country,” muses Horowitz. “Our farmer neighbors have a methane digester to turn cow poop and restaurant waste into electricity and heat. We’ll hook up to it to replace heating oil.”

PETS ¤ MUSIC Each Species Grooves to Its Own Beat by Sandra Murphy

ust as dogs’ and cats’ noses are more efficient than ours, they also have better hearing, reacting to a broader and higher range of frequencies and vibrations. “We sense our world from where our ears are. Our plane is generally five to six feet high; animals closer to the ground hear things differently,” says Janet Marlow, founder and CEO of Pet Acoustics, in Washington Depot, Connecticut. The internationally renowned musician, composer and sound behaviorist has invented species-specific music based on her 30 years of research. Humans hear up to 23,000 Hertz (Hz), which differs substantially from that of many other creatures (lsu.edu/deafness/ HearingRange.html). A Hertz is a standard unit of frequency set at one cycle per second.
~Laura Adams Armer
Marlow found that horses prefer rhythmic pieces matching their natural movements. “When a Tennessee walking horse breeder played music during a birth, the foal and mother recovered faster than usual.” After that, “The horses ran to the barn upon hearing the same music.” Sally Morgan, a physical therapist and advanced certified Tellington TTouch practitioner in Northampton, Massachusetts, who has enjoyed freestyle performance riding, says, “I liked to play our songs in the barn. Five CD players can keep horses relaxed most Sarasota/Manatee Edition
Rabbits Hear Up to 42,000 Hz “Rescued rabbits like long tones, common in music accompanying yoga or reiki,” Morgan relates. “Long tones hold a chord with layers of notes on top.”

information from various angles. Sound frequency and intensity keeps an animal alive in nature; they learn to flee in another direction, not analyze. Separation anxiety is often due to a sound the dog doesn’t recognize, Marlow explains. Sound triggers behavior, whether good or bad, as dogs relax or are stressed. Music releases tension from their being ever-vigilant as seen in their posture. To understand what a dog hears, sit or crawl on the floor. Electronic speakers are usually positioned at heights conducive for our ears, not theirs. “For the holidays, my dogs and horses like We Three Kings, The Holly and the Ivy and especially Greensleeves for their baroque roots and repeating patterns,” notes Morgan.
Cats Hear Up to 64,000 Hz Marlow credits her cat, Osborn, with inspiring her interest in music for animals. When Osborn was injured, she visited the veterinary hospital and sang to him to keep him calm. Her home state’s Litchfield Veterinary Hospital became her initial testing ground for species-specific music. “We use Pet Acoustics music boxes in the cat ward, recovery rooms and exam rooms,” says Heather Florkowski, a certified technician

at the facility. “In our experience, stress inhibits the healing process. Like people, animals are anxious when ill and visiting the doctor’s office. Music helps ease their stress. At home, when I move the music box to another room, my dog follows it.” “During a TTouch session, cats are completely relaxed when I play New Age music for them,” says Morgan. “Pick music that fits the cat’s personality. You can tell what they like from their body language; it’s not always what you’d expect.”
Aquarium Fish Hear Up to 3,000 Hz “Fish are frantic animals that must always anticipate their next meal,” says Sam Williamson, a former marine biologist in Edinburgh, Scotland. “When I started playing classical music at feeding time, I noticed my three betas became calmer. A piece by Benjamin Britten, started two minutes before feeding, led to them expect food only when the music played.”

Domesticated Birds Hear Up to 8,500 Hz In the wild, birds are part of a flock. At home, they’re often solitary. “Birds are the most musical and communicative of all animals,” remarks Marlow. “Without companionship, birds can get neurotic and pull their feathers out. Provide a sense of the outdoors by including nature sounds in played music.” “Animals need us to be aware of their hearing,” Marlow advises. “Holistic pet people have addressed improved diet and medical procedures. Understanding how music supports their well-being also enables us to better care for them.” Connect with Sandra Murphy at StLouisFreelanceWriter@mindspring.com.

weight. It can be difficult to maintain the motivation when they’re constantly battling their own faltering will-power. This can be due to subconscious beliefs and patterns regarding food and weight which no amount of self-restraint can fully resolve. A hypnotist can find these issues and re-program them with visualizations and the power of suggestion, allowing for real and permanent weight control results to take place.

The Real Cost of a Hypnotic Approach: Can You Afford Not to?
by Shana Rosenthal, Certified Consulting Hypnotist
I
n spite of the numerous advantages that hypnosis can bring to our lives, numerous people still view it as somewhat of a luxury. Even though they would likely pay for other activities with the intention of making themselves feel emotionally better such as retail therapy, nights out, vacations, drinking, smoking or eating take-out food, investing in something such as hypnosis is still considered extravagant or unnecessary by some. Even so, with evidence showing that hypnosis can help with issues such as weight, smoking, worry, despair, fears or sleep just to name a few, can we really afford not to try it?
The Positive Aspects of Hypnosis The conscious mind easily forgets many of our life experiences. However, the subconscious stores just about everything, from the earliest childhood experiences and ordeals right up to the present moment. Hypnosis functions by allowing the hypnotist to guide a client toward reaching the subconscious mind, allowing the chance to deal with and release deep-rooted belief systems or unhelpful patterns of behavior. The possible benefits which can occur from working in this manner are considerable.
Weight Reduction Weight management efforts can be hard to sustain for many individuals, regardless of how much they want to shed the 48

People plagued with habits and self-sabotaging behaviors might face the same situation as “yo-yo” dieters. Irrespective of how vigilantly they attempt to kick the habit, they just seem unable to sustain any permanent changes. This is often because their focus is confused. Smokers, for example, often make use of nicotine substitute products under the assumption that by healing the body of its nicotine fixation, they might be able to stop smoking cigarettes. Yet, given this obsession stems from the subconscious, taking that approach often doesn’t work. If the subconscious is engaged and the root of the addiction is addressed, a smoker’s probabilities of successfully stopping are enhanced drastically. This can be achieved effectively with hypnosis often in just one or two sessions.
Fear and Panic Many people’s lives are wrecked by worry, fear and panic, with some even finding their occupation or educational goals inhibited. The cost of tolerating this anxiety may be considerable, causing a person to reject job offers or drop out of college. However, by collaborating with a hypnotist, this challenge can be faced and settled, with the client getting a new lease of life through acquiring greater social confidence and control over a situation. Therefore, despite the fact that its cost might seem more than you can afford at first glance, the substantial advantages that hypnosis can bring to your life are priceless. Shana Rosenthal, Certified Consulting Hypnotist, states the holiday season is “a stressful and costly time of year. We are all running around trying to make the holidays perfect for our families and friends. It is so important to practice good self-care and not forget to look after ourselves. To enjoy all that this time has to offer, we must make sure that we do not underestimate the pressures of everyday life and the effects they have on our personal well-being. A session or two with a qualified Certified Hypnotist is one of the best value for time and money you can gift to yourself.” Shana Rosenthal is a Certified Consulting Hypnotist, Neuro Linguistic Practitioner and Emotional Freedom Technique Practitioner. She is also Stress Management Certified and runs her clinic at Four Pillars, guiding her clients to make profound improvements in their lives. She teaches powerful tools that enable recipients to overcome their issues, enabling self-empowerment, control and ultimately relief. Our New Responsibility by Beata Molnar
I
used to entertain this dream-fantasy as a child of knocking on people’s doors at Christmastime and being welcomed inside to observe their Christmas trees. I always marveled at the unique designs, personalities and styles that were used to decorate millions of these Frasier firs during the holiday season. How people embellished their trees interested me as much as how they addressed their daily struggles, habits and lifestyle choices. I used to ride the subway in New York and stared at other passengers through my dark-tinted sunglasses. I would observe their faces, attempting to distinguish the meaning from the meaninglessness based on their body language, dress code and projected emotion. Somehow I always knew that other people’s feeling states deeply affected and influenced me. I realized that my own life depended on exposure to happy, healthy, spiritually growing, inspirational and forward-moving personalities. Now, as a wiser adult, I understand these sensations were deeply hidden and only accessible through my subconscious. Nevertheless, I find them essential to leading a well-rounded life with meaning, purpose and, most importantly, a smile on my serious face.

We can discuss our problems with authentic honesty, and communities are being formed to support hundreds of issues and causes. Still, I feel that many people exist on the margins, needing to be reached. We somehow must give them access to information, resources, assistance and empowerment to take charge of their own well-being and to change the future of this country for the better. The number of unhealthy people is staggering. Alzheimer’s, heart disease, addiction, diabetes, depression and suicide are on the rise. Many individuals are indeed making positive lifestyle changes, but millions are still uninformed on the basics of wellness and a promised future where debilitating diseases will not prevail. Educational reform might be needed to teach the younger generations about spirituality and the importance of healthy relationships. Nutrition should be introduced into early curriculums as basic requirements. We need to raise our children to nurture healthy souls, brains and emotions. We also need to demonstrate this to our sisters, brothers, neighbors, fellow churchgoers and co-workers. The time is now to shine everything we have learned into the dark corners that still need light and fresh air. When I was a young girl, I had numerous health issues that made life uncomfortable, and I felt alone, angry, helpless and ashamed. My environment was too clueless, uninformed and preoccupied to help me through a healing shift. Years later, I found out I was actually suffering from a serious case of candida infection. I was already living in New York and had access to the right tools, devices and supportive practitioners to know better. Unfortunately, during my teenage years in Budapest, my parents had no knowledge of the debilitating effects of sugar and wheat products on the human system. So I suffered, as do millions of people today. This is just one example of the many areas of ignorance about how the body reacts to certain negative influences. I still remember vaguely dreaming up a “magic machine” that could envelop our bodies and take a special scan to determine all that needs to be known. This was before I discovered the miracle of the Biofeedback Scan. You can only imagine how my jaw dropped while attending a holistic expo when a practitioner did a body scan for me. Here was a magic device that was able to measure everything inside me. We looked at organs, hormones, chakras, emotions, spinal health and more. What a

revolution! Many years have passed since then, and I have now discovered that I am a born healer. Today I operate my own sound and energy healing practice. I have also become a certified Biofeedback Technician. I offer my clients the wonderful benefit of a PEMF technology during our sessions. I purchased a RIFE machine with plasma tubes that we can program with over 1300 various conditions to balance. I am doing my part. I also know many amazing practitioners in Sarasota who are doing their parts as well. Even so, I feel that we still need to do more to provide the masses with crucial information. The effects of non purified water, GMO foods, environmental toxins, poor nutrition, vaccinations, pesticides and herbicides, unresolved conflicts, substance abuse, dependence on medication and lack of contact with Mother Earth can adversely impact human health. This must be brought to public attention. I have faith in our future wellness, but there is much work ahead of us still. Beata Molnar was born in Budapest, Hungary, then later relocated to New York City. She studied psychology at Hunter College where she also discovered her gifts as a healer. After working an energy healer in the Big Apple for several years, her path led to Sarasota where she now operates the Healing Room. Inspired Living Let the Starlight In
by Juliette Jones
“W
e all have known the feeling––that bland, tedious, ‘every day is exactly the same’ sensation that sets in as you begin to question whether your path in life is the right one. Self-doubt and lack of motivation are all too common side-effects of modern life that can leave you utterly defeated. However, by actively seeking out sources of inspiration in the world around you and drawing upon the reserves of inspiration that exist within you, it’s possible to breathe joy back into your life and start working towards your dreams.”––Wikihow.com/BeInspired I have an inclination to look at life from outside the box, guided by inner vision and reliance on metaphysical law. An escape from the box, in this case, is about replacing collectively accepted, structured ways of thinking with spacious, often previously unseen approaches to self-discovery, opportunity and problem-solving. “I know nothing with certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.” ––Vincent van Gogh The cosmos is an intensely creative place. It creates from its own energy, spinning through subatomic realms through galaxies and beyond. As human beings, we are suspended somewhere in between, absolutely united in the great dance of creation, made out of star-dust to become instruments of consciousness and creative power. Inspired living exists in the realization of a deeper self––the real magic in the essential nature of who we are and the expression of our innate creative capacities in fulfilling ways. There is a holy intelligence that underlies the whole of creation. To think and feel is to exert the power of creation itself. Emotion is energy in motion, and thought gives shape to energy. The extent to which our thoughts and feelings form our experience of health, prosperity and the dynamics of practical life is a discussion taken up today at the leading 52

edge of both science and spirituality, but is best realized in the laboratory of our own beings. In present day vernacular, we often hear the expression “awesome,” especially as related to things that seem rather trivial. However, I like hearing the word because daily living is awesome, and the universe is unfathomably awesome, although this sort of awareness tends to escape our focus in daily life. An experience involving real awe is not always comfortable. It’s mind-blowing, and can bring us to our knees, set us apart from others or move us beyond established conceptions of reality. It often makes room for expanded awareness, and that’s what makes it significant as an element of inspired living. A powerful inner experience of awe can initiate dynamic transformation of the mind and, ultimately, lead us into greater dimensions of self-knowing and wholeness. I know several people who traveled from Florida to witness the recent total solar eclipse in its path of totality. One of them was moved to a powerful state of awe, followed by what he described as a first-time experience of spiritual realization. I personally didn’t witness the event but made it a point to tune into an NPR cross-country radio broadcast and listened live as the moon passed across the sun. The reaction of crowds ranged from gleeful to sacredly somber, and on that particular day, the evening news was actually inspirational. In 1991, I had the good fortune of meeting Dr. Edgar Mitchell who, at the time, resided in southern Florida. The world immediately recognizes his name as the pilot of the Apollo 14 mission and the sixth man to walk on the moon. Before becoming an astronaut, Dr. Mitchell had been a test pilot with an impressive command of both engineering and aeronautics. After retiring from NASA and the Navy in 1972, Dr Mitchell completed another stellar mission, having launched––along with co-founder Paul Temple––the Institute of Noetic Sciences, a non-profit group dedicated to advancing the conscious evolution of planet earth through the study of how “beliefs, thoughts and intentions affect the physical world.” Dr. Mitchell made his final journey out of this world in February, 2016, on the eve of the forty-fifth anniversary of his lunar landing. “My view of our planet was a glimpse of divinity.” ––Edgar Mitchell I met Dr. Mitchell through a guest at a fledgling New Thought church I had founded in Fort Lauderdale. He was gracious to consent to speak at our first fundraiser luncheon. Afterwards, when I thanked him, he recounted a life-transforming moment that took place as he stood on the moon and looked back upon the earth. His words are paraphrased below: “Looking back at earth from the surface of the moon, I experienced a moment of awe, a moment of overwhelming ecstasy––a glimpse of divinity. That small sphere in the vastness of space was home to everyone we love, everything we have ever known, everyone who has ever been. Looking at the earth from that perspective deeply transformed my mind and
prompted my studies in consciousness. The men who went to the moon were technicians, but this experience affected all of them––they returned as humanitarians…and more.” “We are all astronauts on spaceship earth.”––Webbo Ockels, Astronaut European Space Agency In our present era, only a few human beings will travel into space to have an epiphany or reconceive their purpose for being on earth. Clearly, it’s a road less traveled. Long ago, it was told that certain knowledge was not of this world. Departure or retreat from the world has long been a hallmark of spiritual practice, as has taking a long journey as a quest for enlightenment. It appears that space travel is more than a technological accomplishment, but a chapter in the escalating awareness of our own nature and place in the universe. Perhaps that feeling of infinity that we experience when looking at the stars reminds us of where we originated.

Dealing with Holiday Stress? There’s Fusion Therapy for That!
by Mary-Elizabeth Schurrer
T
he holiday season is a cherished time of embracing traditions, creating memories, and gathering with friends and family members. But while these make for an enriching and meaningful ambiance, the pressures of decorating the home, hosting guests, cooking meals, purchasing gifts and managing social events can undermine that “holiday spirit.” In the midst of balancing these hectic demands, it’s essential to carve out the space to maintain your own wellness and funnel stress through a nurturing outlet. The effects of mental strain on the physiological structure can be arduous and extensive. “When the body is stressed, the muscles tense up reflexively,” enumerates Gena LewisSchibler, LMT and senior partner of Fusion Therapy in Sarasota. “This feeling of tautness can trigger additional reactions within the body and even promote stress-related disorders. For example, both headaches and migraines are often associated with chronic muscle tension concentrated in the shoulders, neck and head. “The heart and blood vessels comprise two elements of the cardiovascular system that work together in providing nourishment and oxygen to the organs. This activity is also coordinated within the body’s response to stress which can increase the heart-rate and emit stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. “Stress also prompts the nervous system’s fight-or-flight response. This is automatic––no matter how efficiently the mind thinks you are coping with stress. The fight-or-flight instinct disrupts the body’s digestion of nutrients and ability to unwind. It also obstructs the ‘feel good’ hormones like dopamine and serotonin. This elevation of stress hormones and blood pressure causes an adverse impact on both the mind and body.” Soothing an overtaxed system is more critical that ever 54

around this time of year to avoid burnout or sickness as the holidays approach. “Put yourself at the top of that agenda– –‘things to take care of today: me!’ People often fill their schedules with others-focused activities, but you are more equipped to help others once you’ve taken care of yourself. “Remember what the flight crews on airplanes recommend––‘put the oxygen mask on yourself before assisting the passengers around you.’ So be intentional about scheduling time for self-care and bodywork. You deserve to feel healthy and refreshed during the holiday rush. My favorite natural stress relievers are dry salt therapy, massage, bodywork and tons of water. I also find that spending time in nature calms my nervous system,” Lewis-Schibler remarks. While there are diverse, wide-ranging channels for stress management, it’s not enough to just focus on the noticeable symptoms. Lewis-Schibler expounds, “Addressing muscular discomfort is important, but it’s often just a ‘reaction’ to deeper issues in the body caused by trauma which is the reason Fusion Therapy offers a fusion––hence our name––of advanced bodywork modalities. “Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle hands-on treatment that reduces tension both in and around the spinal cord which can be a hidden factor in many health challenges. Visceral Manipulation is a technique for the organs and their associated structures which helps to alleviate stress patterns and structural distortions in the body. “Myofascial Release is another hands-on method that decreases tension within the body’s fascial system. Fascia resembles a spider web that extends from head-to-toe without interruption. Stress gradually tightens the fascia, causing the body to lose its normal range-of-motion which results in painful movement. “Lymphatic Drainage Therapy facilitates the removal of toxins, while assisting the body in absorbing nutrients. It stimulates the immune system and aids the nervous system in decongesting the body’s fluid which increases energy, reduces pain and emits ‘happy hormones.’ Neuromuscular Therapy is a specific form of massage designed to break up the fibrotic tissue and release trigger points to treat muscular injuries from sports, car accidents or whiplash. “Energy Work activates the body’s bio-electric system to remove pressure and heavy energy blocks that limit your own natural healing capabilities. In addition, Dr. Bruno Chikly’s Brain Therapy is a non-invasive approach to releasing traumas within the brain, spinal cord and other related pathologies. “We also offer Dry Salt Therapy to both adults and children. This modality has been proven to help with numerous respiratory ailments such as asthma, chronic ear, nose or throat illnesses, bronchitis and sinusitis, emphysema, and allergy, cold or flu symptoms. Dry Salt Therapy also relieves anxiety, mental strain, insomnia and nervous instability. Breathing in micronized salt particles can help the body recover from physical exhaustion and fatigue. It also strengthens the immune system, while promoting relaxation, calmness and mental clarity––all within a span of just 45 minutes.” To make these benefits accessible to our local community during the season’s “hustle and bustle,” Fusion Therapy is

In addition, our massage, dry salt therapy and other bodywork modalities are still available during our regular hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This expanded schedule is intended to help our clients find more time to unwind and care for themselves,” LewisSchibler adds. Philip Stein is a Leader in Wearable Sleep Technology by Linda Sechrist
F
rom computers, cell phones, smart TVs, DVR players and programmable appliances to a seemingly endless list of other electronic gadgets, we are in constant contact with unnatural electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) generated by technology. In today’s 24/7 society, invisible EMFs are inescapable; they permeate our working and living spaces. What we may not know is how they negatively impact our body’s natural sleep-wake cycle: suppressing melatonin, the hormone that controls the natural circadian rhythm, disturbing slumber and even affecting weight gain, according to University of Tel Aviv research. On the brighter side, some new technological products promise to restore balance to the body, including deeper and more restful sleep. From the Philip Stein sleep bracelet, sleep number beds and portable sleep trackers to sleep-related
apps, devices and applications, user-friendly innovations are addressing America’s sleep deprivation problem. “Philip Stein lifestyle accessories such as the sleep bracelet are designed to contribute to a better quality of life. The unique technology inside each one channels beneficial natural frequencies in the environment into your body,” says Will Stein, co-founder and president of the Philip Stein Group. “The result is to help the individual feel centered, balanced, grounded and more easily able to maintain a sense of well-being.” The company defines optimal well-being as a state of harmony achieved through physical, emotional, mental and spiritual alignment. Although natural-frequency technology was developed earlier by a group of engineers and scientists exploring various frequencies’ influence on water, the initial discovery has been attributed to ancient sages in India that intuited them. For example, 7.83 Hz, the frequency of “om”, happens to be Mother Earth’s natural heartbeat rhythm, now known as the Schumann Resonance. Aligned with the brain’s alpha and theta states, this technology of resonating frequencies has been carefully tuned and tested by Philip Stein researchers, technicians and sleep experts. Today, it is at the core of all Philip Stein products. Philip Stein’s tuning technology picks up and channels the beneficial natural frequencies that have always surrounded human beings. “We believe that all organisms have evolved or grown accustomed to these natural frequencies, and our systems are tuned to operate best with them, rather than with the increasing number of manmade frequencies we experience in the modern world,” explains Stein. Beyond “Tofurkey:” How One Local Restaurant Is Reinventing Meatless Holiday Meals by Mary-Elizabeth Schurrer
‘T
is the season to be feasting. Plates are loaded with turkey and ham, green bean casserole, buttermilk biscuits, mashed potatoes and gravy. These delicacies are traditional and cultural touchstones–– the holidays just wouldn’t be complete without them. Right? Not so fast. If you’re a vegan or vegetarian, seasonal foods can actually pose a dilemma. You might feel a sense of conflict between engaging with friends and family around the table versus maintaining your own nutritional preferences. This balancing act often leads to anxiety during mealtimes, especially since it can seem like you’re burdening the host with your particular eating habits. The fact is, however, it’s entirely feasible to avoid the intake of meat or dairy without sacrificing the pleasure of sharing a meal with those you cherish. To offer more insight on how to practice healthy, mindful––and plant-based––eating in the midst of the festivities, I spoke with Annette Weinberger, co-owner of Café Evergreen in Nokomis. This local institution specializes in natural, organic, fresh and wholesome dining with a creative seasonal menu––most of which is meatless. If anyone has proof that holiday feasting can be vegan or vegetarian friendly, it’s her!
Natural Awakenings: Do you have any suggestions for making the holiday season less of a hassle for those on a vegan or vegetarian diet? Weinberger: If you adhere to a special diet, minimize the holiday stress by offering to bring an item that fits your specific dietary requirements. An example of this would be a butternut squash casserole which is filling for you and a delicious side dish for everyone else. There are also twists and modifications you can add to certain foods which make them healthier without compromising taste. For instance, serve fresh green beans with cranberries to replace the bacon.
NA: What are some common misconceptions about the difficulty or inconvenience of preparing a meatless and dairy-free holiday meal? Weinberger: Many people assume that preparing meatless and dairy-free meals will make the food taste unsatisfying. To avoid this issue, be generous with the spices or herbs, and cook with healthy fats to satiate both your stomach and brain.
Here’s an example of a meal at Café Evergreen that meets all these requirements: avocado slider on dehydrated onion bread (starter), vegan Reuben sandwich with a side of baked sweet potato fries (entrée) and vegan chocolate mousse (dessert). This meal is both flavorful and substantial for everyone. Also, when some people hear the words “healthy” and “organic,” they get sensitive or nervous because, unfortunately, there are many bland nutritious recipes out there. But sometimes you can just present the food without mentioning it’s healthy, then allow everyone to partake and enjoy. For instance, our roasted cauliflower starter with garlic, walnuts and peas can always win over the toughest skeptics.
NA: What are the some of the most popular vegan or vegetarian dishes on Cafe Evergreen’s seasonal menu during this time of year? Weinberger: Right now, our cranberry kombucha spritzers are in high demand. We start with fresh cranberries slow cook them until tender and allow them to cool. Then, to prepare the drink, we use the fresh cranberry juice added to our raspberry-hibiscus kombucha, and the result is a light, effervescent and refreshing spritzer––the perfect holiday drink! In addition, our vegan squash and pumpkin soup, vegetarian butternut squash ravioli and pumpkin pie dessert made with coconut milk and organic pumpkin filling are all popular items too.
NA: What are some of your favorite meatless holiday recipes that appeal to vegans or vegetarians, as well as the carnivores at your table? Weinberger: I love to get creative with the spices and seasoning. For example, I make a flavorful stuffing with vegetable broth, sautéed garlic, onions, celery, shallots and carrots, then I add a few dashes of turmeric to make it even healthier. I also enjoy whipping up mashed potatoes with olive oil and roasted garlic or baking vegan corn muffins. I season leafy greens with smoked paprika, onions and garlic––my dinner guests don’t even miss the ham! Another favorite entrée is roasted Brussels sprouts with shallots or cook acorn squash filled with quinoa stuffing. And cue the mouth-watering. I’ll have seconds, please! Café Evergreen is located at 801 Tamiami Trail S, Nokomis. To make a reservation, call 941-412-4334. For more information and to view the menu, visit CafeEvergreen.net. Cultivating the Shen: Energizing the Spirit by Rene Ng, DOM, AP, L.Ac.
Y
ou’ve most likely heard the phrase “the eyes are the windows to the soul.” Well, in the Chinese culture, we have a similar expression. We use the phrase in Cantonese “Ngarn Shen” which is translated to “eye spirit.” This means the health of an individual’s spirit is reflected in the eyes. People in the Western world have seen and said it as well––the eyes look “intense,” “listless,” “droopy,” “disinterested,” “scared,” or “determined.” The spirit, therefore, plays an important role in our lives, and can make us full or empty, rich or poor. Total health encompasses three components––the mind, body and spirit. The mind is a control center that tells our physical bodies how to behave. The body is a shell that holds all our soft tissues, muscles, tendons, ligaments, internal organ systems, skeletal system and other components that make up our physical structures. But the drive behind how we function is associated with the spirit. If the spirit is weak, we will become listless, depressed, lethargic, quiet and unmotivated. However, if the spirit is strong, we will exhibit ambition, passion, gregariousness, courage, energy and a zest for life. The spirit determines whether our lives are half full or half empty. Over the course of thousands of years, the Chinese have developed a deep understanding of the spirit and how it works. They have found the spirit is tied to the physical body, and its characteristics impact the health of some of the body’s organs. According to the Chinese, the spirit can be separated into five different categories: • Shen • Hun • Po • Yi • Zhi
The Shen: “Mind”
The Shen is also known as the mind. In Five Element theory, the Shen is associated with the fire element and heart organ system. It is tied to our consciousness, cognitive functions,
mental health, vitality and waking thoughts. The state of the Shen is visible in the eyes. Therefore, a healthy Shen produces bright, shining eyes. The Shen resides in the heart organ where, at night, it goes to sleep. Therefore, if a person thinks too much and the mind is not at rest, insomnia prevails, and the individual will find it difficult to sleep––especially staying asleep after waking up. Here, the eyes will reflect a fatigued and disturbed Shen, appearing listless and dull. This is often observed in people with longterm emotional issues. In addition, manic behavior and panic attacks are often seen in those with heart imbalances. Foods that are beneficial for the heart such as watermelon, bean sprouts and tofu can help. In addition, lying motionless on the floor positioned the back with the limbs spread out can also promote the circulation of Qi to calm the Shen down. Schizophrenics and people with mental disorders are deemed to be suffering from “Shen Jing Ben,” or “Shen Disturbance Sickness,” and are treated accordingly–– and often effectively––with Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture.
The Hun: “Ethereal Soul”
Associated with the wood element in Chinese Five Element theory, the Hun is equivalent to the Western notion of spirit. It is not dependent on a physical being for existence and continues after death. The wood element is tied to the liver organ system which governs emotions. Therefore, imbalances with the liver organ system can impact the Hun, causing both short-term and long-term emotional problems. The Hun is responsible for relationships, loving, kindness, empathy, compassion, tolerance and awareness of suffering. The Hun also serves as a reservoir for ideas that bring meaning into life. Imbalances that affect the Hun can lead to anger, frustration, resentment, unkindness and depression. The individual can also feel cut-off from life. Bipolar tendencies might also settle in. To rectify the Hun, the health of the liver must be addressed. A major part of what affects the liver is stress, so de-stressing through physical exercise can heal the Hun. In addition, avoiding alcohol, fatty foods and sour flavors can help prevent the liver from becoming more imbalanced. Peppermint and chrysanthemum teas are excellent for helping to bring the liver back to balance. Chinese Herbal medicine such as “Xiao Yao San,” when combined with acupuncture, can also restore the liver, and subsequently the Hun, to a homeostatic state.

The Po: “Corporeal Soul”
The Po is associated with the lungs and exists only during physical life. It is associated with the metal element in Five Elements theory. The fact that humans possess the ability to sense things is tied to the Po. This also allows the individual to respond, both physically and emotionally, to circumstances, take actions, and gauge justice and fairness. In Chinese Medicine, the lungs manage the immune system, and are tied to sadness and grief. These emotions take a toll on the lungs and can injure the Po. This is why grieving people often complain of breathing difficulties or shortness of breath. An individual with Po imbalance will likely show continuous signs of grief and sadness like sighing, shoulders slouched forward, and eyes that appear sad and listless. The individual might also present with a tendency to fall sick easily or be prone to allergies. When the Lungs are strong and balanced, so is the Po, and the individual will be lively, happy and full of zest. But when the lungs are weak and imbalanced, the Po reflects the same. The most effective method to strengthen the lungs is to breathe fresh air that is full of oxygen. Chinese frequent parks early in the morning to take long walks, breathing deeply and slowly to inhale as much oxygen as they can. They call this practice “Shen Wun” in Cantonese, or “Spirit Exercising”. The lungs also detest cold and dryness, so avoiding ice, cold drinks, spicy foods, smoking and dry air will keep the lungs from becoming injured. Foods that are beneficial for the lungs include pears, strawberries, honey and loquat syrup. Cupping therapy, along with Chinese herbal medicine such as Dong Chong Xia Cao (Cordyceps) and acupuncture, are also effective in addressing conditions with the lungs and helping restoring these organs, and subsequently the Po, to balance and health.
The Yi: “Intellect”
In the Western world, one of the primary goals of the mother and father is to foster development of their child’s intelligence. This is no different from the Eastern world. However, the Chinese further subdivide this into “Yi Zhi” which needs to be developed. The Yi
refers to the “intellect,” while the Zhi (which we will discuss later) refers to the “will.” The existence of the Yi allows the individual to reason, analyze and debate. Yi also enables creativity and problem solving. The spleen organ system is tied to the Yi, and both are associated with the earth element in Five Elements theory. When the spleen is impaired, the individual is unable to readily make decisions and instead will become pensive, over-analytical and worrisome. The individual will also likely suffer from digestive problems. When the Yi is strong, the individual shows confidence, intelligence, quickthinking, creativity, and a strong sense of action and decision-making. The eyes look sharp and full of energy. The spleen is also responsible for the production of Qi, so when the Yi is not full, the individual will also present with lethargy and fatigue, showing signs of procrastination and indecisiveness. Raw vegetables and coldtemperature foods are not ideal for the spleen and should be minimally taken or even avoided. The spleen thrives on warm cooked foods, especially foods that are naturally sweet (not cooked with sugar). Raw ginger root and green tea, in particular, strengthen the spleen to assist with digestion. When the spleen is strong, so is the Yi. As a result, the individual will be intelligent, creative and energetic. Moxibustion, Chinese herbal formulas, such as “Gui Pi Wan,” and acupuncture are effective in helping the spleen remain balanced and healthy, producing a strong Yi in the individual.
The Zhi: “Will”
We all have encountered either strongor weak-willed people. The will is tied to the Zhi, and is associated with the water element in Five Elements theory. The Zhi is also connected to the kidney organ system, so functioning kidneys are essential for a healthy Zhi. An individual lacking in Zhi will exhibit fear and hesitancy to make decisions. They will be fearful of taking action or risks, being present and visible, or exhibiting will-power. In China, when a child is presented in the clinic with these tendencies, that child will be treated with Chinese Medicine to tonify and balance the kidneys.
Once balanced, the child will have less inhibition against taking action, and will experience more confidence overall. The kidneys also govern development, so an imbalanced kidney system will present with bone growth and body development issues, back, knee, shoulder or foot pain, and issues with the spinal column. The eyes will show dark circles, and the body can appear bloated with water, showing signs of edema. One can strengthen the kidneys by avoiding either sitting or standing nonstop for an extended period of time, consuming goji berries, almonds, seaweed and other foods that have been shown to benefit the kidneys. An individual with an imbalanced Zhi will lack courage and motivation, present with fear in the eyes, and lose interest in being sociable. With Chinese herbal medicines such as “You Gui Wan” and “Zuo Gui Wan,” Moxibustion and acupuncture, the kidneys can become strengthened, and the Zhi will be conditioned and returned to balance, giving the individual both confidence and will-power. Conclusion The spirit is addressed differently in the East than here in the Western world. For the spirit of the individual to be full and strong, an imbalance must be identified and addressed. Symptoms like depression, fear, lethargy, anger, impatience and more are essential for determining where the imbalance is taking place. Your board-certified, licensed Acupuncture Physician can help you achieve this, and will then formulate a treatment plan to cultivate your overall spirit and guide its development in the right direction. The result is a much improved quality of life and a brighter outlook on embracing challenges and achieving results. Rene Ng, AP, L.Ac., is a board-certified, licensed Acupuncture Physician and Chinese Herbalist in Sarasota. Depression, cancer care, MS, trauma, insomnia, thyroid issues and pain management are among the health challenges he helps patients address on a daily basis at his clinic near Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Craniosacral Therapy Keeping the Brain Healthy by Terrence B. Grywinski, Advanced Craniosacral Therapy
C
raniosacral Therapy (CST) has been helping people eliminate pain, headaches and TMJ, while increasing flexibility and mobility, improving energy levels and organ function, and enhancing overall physical and mental health since 1985 when Dr. John Upledger started to teach practitioners this incredible modality. Tad Wanveer, LMBT, CST-D, author of Brain Stars and long-time teacher of Craniosacral Therapy for the Upledger Institute and Dr. John Upledger, researcher, Osteopathic Physician and Surgeon and the developer of CST, have expanded this modality to correct dysfunctions in the brain and the spinal cord. Wanveer’s Brain Stars is a definitive description of the glial cells which form the different areas and functions in the brain and spinal cord. Glial cells support, protect and nourish both neural cells and neural networks, allowing the brain to communicate with the rest of the body. These glial cells form areas of the brain that produce Craniosacral Fluid (CS Fluid) which nourishes each cell in the brain and spinal cord. For our brains to remain healthy, we need a dynamic production CS Fluid which performs the important job of cleansing each cell of metabolic wastes. It also cleanses anything else that enters the brain and the spinal cord from infections, viruses and toxic substances from the blood that penetrate the blood brain barrier. Strokes, concussions, sports injuries and trauma are the most common ways blood gets into the brain. Blood is toxic to both the brain and spinal cord tissue. Immune cells in the brain, astrocytes and microglia, are spurred into action to repair brain bleeds and other traumas, as well as fighting infections and viruses. For the brain to remain healthy, CS Fluid needs to cleanse all the debris. Recent research has found that, while we sleep, CS Fluid also cleanses amyloid plaques that form during waking hours, and are implicated in the development of Alzheimer’s. We know that sports like football and soccer can be injurious to the brain. Most of us have played these sports, and can be walking around unknowingly with some brain injury. Most of us have also experienced some type of trauma to the head or spine. Many of these traumas, over a long period of time, can be injurious to the health of our brains, resulting in serious conditions such as foggy brain, migraines and eventually senile dementia, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, or other brain dysfunctions. The next important function is the drainage of the CS Fluid, carrying the metabolic wastes and any other debris into the lymph system. There are three areas of the brain that function as drainage sites and multiple sites in the spinal cord. Over 50% of the CS Fluid is drained through the nerve roots that come out into the body between the spinal vertebrae. If these nerve root drainage ports are functioning poorly or have a blockage, the brain and spinal cord is bathed in a toxic 62

slurry. Years of poor drainage might explain the development foggy brain, chronic pain, headaches, migraines, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, as well as other brain dysfunctions. In children, ADD, learning disabilities and possibly some forms of autism can be a result of poor drainage. Craniosacral Therapists, with specialized training, can access the different functions within the brain. This is achieved in the same way we access other traumas in the body–– through fascia (strong connective tissue) which intersperses and envelopes our muscles, attaches our muscles to the bones, and encases all our organs, spinal cord and brain. That fascia extends into the cellular level, and in the case of the brain and spinal cord, into the glia. All the functions of the brain and spinal cord are formed from glial cells. Releasing the fascial stress to the different glial cells helps the brain repair dysfunctions. A Craniosacral Therapist is able to access these glial cells through fascia (connective tissue) to engage the body’s innate ability to correct, reorganize and heal itself and reverse many of these dysfunctions affecting the brain and the spinal cord that seriously affect our state of health and quality of life. The following are some dysfunctions of the brain and the spinal cord, over a period of years, can seriously impair our health. Poor production of CS Fluid impairs the necessary cellular cleansing. Through the glial cells, a Craniosacral Therapist can release the stress on the ventricles within the brain to increase and enhance the production of CS Fluid. By releasing stress in the glial cells, the flow of CS Fluid can be improved throughout the brain and spinal cord, improving the cleansing process. When the drainage ports in the spine become blocked, the nerves that exit into the body to the muscles and organs become irritated from the metabolic waste products and, in turn, refer pain to muscles and organs, often becoming a chronic pain syndrome few therapies seem to help. A specialty trained Craniosacral Therapist can release the stress on the meninges, the outer lining of the spinal cord and stress on the immune repair cells that can be blocking these nerve root drainage ports. In conjunction with working on a couple of other dysfunctions, these drainage ports can be opened. Freeing the nerve roots from the irritation of metabolic wastes and debris will often relieve chronic pain. Good production and freeflow of CS Fluid, along with proper drainage into the lymph system, will improve brain functioning and keep the brain healthier. In fact, clients usually experience an immediate functioning of their brain and a decrease in their chronic pain. Terrence Grywinski has specialized in Craniosacral Therapy since 1994 when he received training at the Upledger Institute. He received specialized training in working with dysfunctions in the brain and the spinal cord earlier this year. Grywinski has seen incredible changes in clients who have very difficult problems since integrating this new training into his therapy providing quick and lasting relief from injury, pain and restriction in the body’s network of connective tissues. His practice Advanced Craniosacral Therapy is located at 1188 N Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. For more information, call 941-3218757 or visit ADVCST.com.
