S

ummer is on its way out (in theory at least...Southwest Florida still hasn’t gotten the memo!), and the signs of fall are about to make their first appearance. The new school year is back in full-swing. Pumpkin scented everything will soon dominate the stores. Weekends are reserved for football games. And our calendars are packed so much with activities that we can sometimes forget to take even just a minute for ourselves. That’s why our September issue of Natural Awakenings is here to remind you that, in the midst of this transitional season, the importance of self-care should not be overlooked. This month, we’re exploring a number of diverse self-care practices that can easily be integrated into your normal routine—from vibrant aging to community building to Ayurvedic eating to yoga therapy, just to name a few. So without further ado...let’s have a peek inside! Our feature article is on “Age-Defying Bodywork,” and delves into why massage should not be viewed as a luxury but a crucial defense to ward off the effects of premature aging. Bodywork modalities can boost cognitive function and problem-solving, reduce inflammation, and promote healthy digestion and cell regeneration—all of which are factors in the aging process. Another element of self-care is balanced nutrition, and our “Conscious Eating” article explores the ancient system of holistic medicine known as Ayurveda. This philosophy around eating reinforces mental and physical wellness through the preparation and consumption of natural ingredients, herbs, spices and local, seasonal foods. As the hectic pace of life in this time of year continues to accelerate, a healthy diet is crucial to energize both the mind and body. Finally, it’s National Yoga Month, and our “Fit Body” article describes how a consistent yoga practice can boost vitality. This regimen includes exercise, meditation, conscious breathing, and other physical, mental and spiritual components. In addition, yoga can also be a line of defense against cardiovascular disease, limited mobility and depression as the body ages. No matter what stage of life you’re in, this can be a powerful adjunct to your self-care. Well, that’s a glimpse into our lineup for this issue—as always, we are committed to making sure you find both inspiration and enjoyment inside these pages, and we love to hear your feedback. Please send any comments or questions to Publisher@NASRQ.com, and let’s raise a pumpkin spice latte to the start of this new fall season!

What Happens in the Healing Room?

W

hen people Google terms like “Energy Healing” or “Reiki” in Sarasota, the Healing Room will appear in the search, but this practice is also equipped to offer more than just these modalities. Beata Molnar, a gifted energy healer, is trained to perform Biofeedback evaluations with a computer program that uses the human voice to record and evaluate the entire energy field. When clients visit, she will initiate an in-depth discussion of issues they want to address, then a Biofeedback Energy Scan will follow. After having established the directions, conditions and imbalances that need to be harmonized and balanced, the client will recline on a PEMF mat, and the energy healing session will take place. PEMF is a pulsed electromagnetic field generator that has been used all over the world in both Eastern and Western modalities, chiropractic offices and holistic healing centers. PEMF charges the cells with energy to support the various cellular functions. Molnar also uses sound healing with singing quartz crystal bowls in her sessions. She has a wide variety of bowls tuned to particular frequencies and notes that resonate all seven chakras for both clearing and harmonizing. One of her favorite energy harmonizing devices is the RIFE machine which is available to all clients if anyone wants to experiment with the power of plasma tubes, metal pates and copper coils that resonate over 1300 various frequency packages. Everything in her office is included in these healing sessions which usually last 90 minutes. If you are interested seeing your aura colors, harmonizing chakras, addressing nutritional and system imbalances, or freeing emotional blockages and spiritual disturbances, contact the Healing Room. Location: Aaron Ct., Sarasota. For more information, call 941-586-9539 or follow Molnar on Facebook.com/CreateBalanceAndHealing.

Do You Feel Challenged?

H

ave you experienced challenges or stress in your job, health, family or relationships? If so, Rev. Lois Cheney, a psychic medium and clinical hypnotist, can help you. Hypnosis is a gentle, reliable way to make sustainable changes in your life. When the “up-front” mind is stilled, the subconscious mind is always available to take direction, and a new pathway is formed which leads to greater success. Rev. Cheney offers a variety of options as a certified clinical hypnotist. With her support, you can move beyond fears or negative habits, release excess body weight, explore past lives, enhance your fitness or athletic skills, and more. If you want to energize your physical stamina and ability to perceive the delicate intuitive energies that surround you, experience a sound and color healing treatment. While you lie relaxed on her table, Rev. Cheney works above you with 13 tuning forks, gemstones, color breaths and essential oils. Or perhaps you desire to contact a loved one in heaven. A mediumship session will provide the connection you seek. For over 45 years, Rev. Cheney has successfully channeled spirits for her clients. Also, if you need help making decisions about your own life-path direction, a psychic reading is for you. It is useful to write down the points you want to clarify and bring that list to a session. This will remind you what to ask and ensure that you receive answers. Rev. Cheney works from the healing room of her home in North Port. Using Your DNA for Precision Nutrition

C

an genetic variations lead to long-term health consequences? Can these be bypassed? How could genetic information be used to help people achieve health? Sandhill Healing Center can enable patients to bypass their genetic destiny through personalized nutrition. Methylation is a process that takes place in the body countless times each day. The term methyl refers to one carbon molecule attached to three hydrogen molecules, and this group of atoms is essential for many processes like building and repairing DNA, clearing toxins and absorbing nutrients. Individual genetic makeup helps determine how compounds and elements are methylated properly. Small genetic variations, known as Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (or SNPS), can impact the methylation pathways and contribute to health concerns. Sandhill Healing Center now has the ability to test, translate and target SNPs in the methylation pathway, then customize a supplement regiment for our clients based on those insights. This precision nutrition is based on a person’s unique genetic makeup, and has been sought after by scientist and clinicians since the human genome was first analyzed. We can find which gene variations exist for each client and make rational, individualized supplement decisions with confidence. There are three steps in this process: test for nutritionally relevant SNPs with saliva-based personal genome analysis kits; translate the results into nutritional recommendations that identify eight key methylation SNPs; and target with personalized nutritional support from products specifically designed to address the SNP specific need. Location: 24901 Sandhill Blvd., Suite 8, Port Charlotte. For more information, call 941235-8929.

You are likely familiar with the rule that eight glasses of water a day keeps you hydrated, especially in the summer. But what if you prefer the refreshment of carbonated water instead? The nation’s thirst for sparkling water is reflected in skyrocketing demand, as more Americans limit their intake of soda and sugary drinks. “The upsides to the effervescent, calorie-free, sugar-free drink are crystal clear,” notes Dr. Tia Hooper, UnitedHealthcare’s medical director for Central Florida. According to Dr. Hooper, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition conducted a study that compared the hydrating effects of different beverages which included sparkling water. The research found no difference in hydration between sparkling and still water. The CDC recommends drinking sparkling water as a healthy alternative to calorie-filled beverages to prevent obesity. Adding fresh produce, such as lime, lemon, orange, mint or cucumber can also add to variety to plain water. “If people are worried about recognizing the signs of proper hydration, I tell them to watch for signs of dehydration like headache, fatigue, moodiness and dark urine. Light-colored urine is a good sign that you are where you should be,” Dr. Hooper continues. In addition, the Mayo Clinic outlines how to determine the amount of water needed each day. Exercise: If an activity causes sweat, you need to drink extra water to cover the fluid loss, before, during and after a workout. Environment: Hot or humid temperatures require additional fluid intake. Dehydration also can occur at high altitudes. Overall Health: If you are sick, the body loses fluids due to fever, vomiting or diarrhea. Drink more water or follow a doctor’s advice to consume oral rehydration solutions. Bladder infections and urinary tract stones also require more water intake. Pregnancy or Breastfeeding: Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding need additional fluids. Pregnant women should increase to 10 cups of fluids daily, and women who breastfeed should increase to 13 cups of fluids daily. For more information, visit UHC.com/Health-And-Wellness.

Cold or unsupportive mothering styles can harm a child’s health into adulthood, Loma Linda University researchers have found. Compared to adults mothered in a “warm” style, adults that had been mothered in a “cold” manner had an average of 25 percent shorter telomeres, indicating faster cellular aging, a shorter life span and greater susceptibility to disease. The study was based on follow-up blood samples of 200 adults originally enrolled in cohort studies of 130,000 people starting in 1976. Those that described their mothering as cold tended to be overweight or obese as adults, with less education. A father’s parenting style had a much smaller effect and was not significant enough to impact telomere length, the authors found. 24

For runners, food is fuel, and a new study lays to rest debates about which diet is best. Researchers at Leibniz University, in Hannover, Germany, recruited 76 men and women runners, divided equally between vegans, vegetarians and omnivores. They had an average age of 27 and ran recreationally two to five times a week. The runners were asked to pedal to exhaustion on a stationary bike, and researchers found that all three groups had similar exercise capacity and power output, and similar lactate production during exercise. The researchers concluded that vegan diets were “a suitable alternative for ambitious recreational runners.”

Regular exposure to sunlight decreases the incidence of irritable bowel disease (IBD) in children, researchers from the Australian National University report. They compared 99 children with IBD with 396 healthy children using interviews with parents to establish a database. For every 10 minutes of sunlight exposure a day on average, there was a 6 percent reduction in risk, and 30 minutes a day reduced the risk by 20 percent. Also, children with deeper tans were at lower risk. IBD, which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, has been shown in previous studies to be less common among people that live in sunnier places and closer to the Equator.

Sleep Tight to Keep Ulcers at Bay About one in 10 Americans develops painful peptic ulcers, open sores in the lining of the stomach and duodenum, that are sometimes caused by an overgrowth of the Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Drug therapy to eradicate the bacteria involving two antibiotics and one acid suppressant is usually successful, but about 10 percent of cases recur. A key factor may be sleep quality, suggests a new study from the University of Hong Kong. Researchers followed 1,420 people that had been treated for peptic ulcers for three years. The ulcers recurred in 8.3 percent of them, and those that had poor sleep—including taking longer to fall asleep and waking more during the night—were significantly more likely to be re-infected. Longer total sleep times helped reduce infection recurrence.

Qigong for Flexibility and Improved Mobility by S. Yevette Sutter, RN, CCT

F

lexibility and mobility—what’s the difference? Flexibility measures ROM distance, while mobility measures dynamic ROM strength and control. Qigong exercise and meditation is a unified process dedicated to creating balance, strength, agility and grace to ensure both vitality and healthy aging. Anyone, no matter their stage of life or physical condition, can practice Qigong. The dynamic movements of Qigong can achieve what no other medicine can— help your body, mind and spirit to connect and function in harmony. This reawakens and strengthens your body’s innate healing abilities. Qigong offers immediate gratification without the impact of an aerobics routine, and it offers the benefits of running or weight training without the risks. Flexibility training is not a matter of intensity, but a matter of frequency. A correct and consistent practice of Qigong can improve your self-awareness, focus, 26

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

strength, bone health, balance and proprioception. As your body responds to the demands that you most frequently put upon it, you will experience the most benefits through a regular, diverse and moderate flexibility training. The movements of Qigong promote eccentric muscle contractions that occur while the muscle is actively lengthening. These eccentric contractions can help to increase flexibility and connective tissues strength more than classic stretches or the passive stretches found in some yoga practices. Flexibility is also influenced by how the body moves and functions most of the time. For instance, if you spend your time hunched over a desk, the nervous system and postural muscles will adapt to make it easier for the body to assume this habitual position. As a result, you will be less able to access, initiate and control other expressions of movement. There are flexibility benefits from

www.nasrq.com

Qigong mindfulness too. As mindful movement increases your capacity to focus on and respect your current bodily experience, instead of just pushing through it, mindful movement can develop your self-awareness. Qigong places emphasis on improving your most vital function—the breath. Mindful breathing is the link between your consciousness and autonomic nervous system which regulates your stress and relaxation responses. Mindful breathing is a form of neurological conditioning. When you partner mindful breathing with flexibility training, you communicate with and retrain your nervous system which will bring a sense of calm and safety, while reducing stress and muscle tension. Qigong is one of the most powerful prescriptions a Traditional Chinese Medical doctor can use because it works directly on the body’s energy system. Thousands of Asian studies confirm the success of Qigong. In addition, forward thinking American businesses, especially in highstress technology areas like Silicon Valley, incorporate Qigong exercise breaks as a daily routine to increase productivity and success. So what can Qigong offer you? This practice will improve circulation, posture, flexibility, balance and strength; prevent or reduce falling injuries in the elderly; relieve chronic pain from injuries, surgery, arthritis and fibromyalgia; balance brain chemistry and reduce anxiety, obsessive compulsive symptoms or depression; and accelerate elimination of toxins and wastes for natural detoxification. Qigong is truly a system for a lifetime which is the reason so many people over 60 in China practice Qigong. The effects can be powerful, but the routines themselves are gentle. Qigong can certainly improve the quality of life of everyone who practices it. Sandhill Healing Center and Sandhill Medical Thermography is an integrative clinic that combines Western conventional medicine with Eastern therapies. The center is located at 24901 Sandhill Blvd., Suite 8, Port Charlotte. Aging Healthfully by Dr. Christina Captain, DAOM, MSAOM, MSHN, MA, AP

W

e all age, but the key to graceful aging is in paying attention to and managing the process. By doing, this you enable yourself to increase your health-span— not just your life-span. This is a choice, a philosophy that must permeate and infuse your entire life. Each decision you make in regard to what you eat, do, say and think must all reflect a basic philosophy of health and well-being. In order for this healthy aging process to manifest, you are required to make lifestyle changes that can be difficult and uncomfortable. It is also dependent on the amount of personal work you have done. The foundation of self-love must be firmly in place to be successful in healthy aging. Love and respect for yourself is necessary to create a life that will support a youthful health-span. Can we continue to age chronologically but maintain a younger biological terrain? The answer is “yes!” Biological terrain is the environment which the body, mind and spirit exist in. This biological terrain can either support the growth of the body, mind and spirit, or it can degrade and destroy them. This terrain, if kept clean and properly functioning, can become younger despite its chronological age. Just allow that to sink in. You can become younger in body, mind and spirit. Now, don’t let my casual tone fool you into thinking this is an easy task. In fact, this task is quite arduous for some—it is time consuming, and it can be costly. But there is a test available called the “telomere test,” and this blood test can determine how old your body is in comparison to your chronological age. Now that your interest is peaked, let’s begin a journey to discover some of the ways that you can increase your health span and allow your biological terrain to become younger. First, you need beauty rest. Adequate sleep is a major health factor—aging accelerates when the body does 28

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

not receive the rest it needs. Put this concept to the test, and the next time you don’t obtain an adequate amount of rest, look in the mirror then ask yourself, “How old do I feel today?” I guarantee that you will see my point. Strive to obtain eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night, as well as 12 hours of fasting, ideally from dinner to breakfast, the next day—for example, 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Next, you need adequate clean drinking water. There are so many reasons for this I cannot even begin to enumerate on them. The human body is comprised of mostly water, so without consuming adequate amounts of clean water, you cannot keep your tissues, organs and skin moist and nourished as they are intended to be. You should also support your body on a regular basis with therapies like acupuncture, chiropractic and massage. These healing modalities can guide the body into a healthy and harmonious balance. You need adequate exercise too. Exercising the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of yourself is crucial for making the biological terrain younger. In my opinion, the practice of yoga is a perfect blend of body, mind and spirit. It is an incredible experience on so many levels. Cardiovascular exercise and resistance training are equally important. Having more muscle than fat increases your caloric burn, as well as bone density. This, of course, is important for maintaining a healthy weight and a younger biological terrain. Make sure to participate in one hour of physical exertion on a daily basis. Clean food sources are also imperative. Eating organic, fresh and local whole foods is exactly what you need to strive for. A variety of colored veggies and whole grains is an ideal start. Another place to look is decreasing the amount of animal flesh you consume. If every person in this country just dedicated one day each week to consume no animal protein it would have a major impact on everything in nature, from the environment to water supply. Reducing the amount of inflammation your food sources have is also a primary target. Look for more veggies and fruits and less refined or processed foods—in other words, more plants and less animal products.

Contemplative time for inner reflection is another crucial element, and meditation, in my opinion, is the most beneficial outlet. Being able to quiet the mind leads you into a state where you can self-heal. Imagine that concept—self healing. I wonder what you could heal if you just allowed yourself the time and space to focus on it? If you are too busy to focus your energy on healing, how can you expect to maintain a youthful terrain? Of course, these are just some of the foundational blocks you need address in order to reverse the age of your biological terrain. Anyone can start with these concepts tomorrow, but there are many people who already live with a dis-ease or diagnosis. Some have become that diagnosis—bought into it whole-heartedly and without doubt. But I am here to tell you to have doubt. Doubt the fact that you must live with an autoimmune disease, depression or diabetes. There are people who can help you repair, rebuild and revitalize the body, mind and spirit. The people who are in this category just need more help than an article can provide. They require guidance and caring to ease them into a healthful existence where self-love can permeate their lives and, in turn, shine outward to those around them. Seek out qualified practitioners who have integrity and walk their talk. Interview who you want to work with and ask around for referrals. Remember, it’s in the unity of a healthy mind, body and spirit that you will find truth, bliss and peace. I

’ve heard it said that age is just a state of mind. “But if that’s true, then why am I feeling so old?” you might ask yourself. Aging is a process that can either be swift and devastating or slow and graceful. I look at aging as an accrual of damage from imbalances in metabolism which can result in loss of organ reserve and present as symptoms of some dysfunction or disease. In most cases, however, we are the ones doing it to ourselves, intentionally or unintentionally. For example, cigarette smoking results in damage to collagen and elastin metabolism of the skin and increases the speed in which the skin ages to cause premature and severe wrinkling. Cigarettes are an obvious source of body damage and thus accelerated aging, and so I bet that you do not smoke if you are reading this, but have you considered some less obvious targets? Many people have been sold a hormone replacement and supplementation paradigm of “better living” through modern chemistry by doctors who focus their practices on “anti-aging” medicine. Although in many instances, the client feels better initially, eventually they begin to deteriorate in vitality because hormones can become toxic in the patient when the underlying cause of hormone deficiency is not addressed. The hormones treat the symptoms and numbers of lab values, but they do not fix the reasons for hormone imbalance which could range from sleep apnea to lack of zinc. I diagnosed a pituitary tumor in a patient who had been treated with testosterone for a low level that was not fully evaluated by the initial doctor. In the right individual, however, a hormone replacement can be the answer to a vibrant full life. This patient is one in whom we have diagnosed low hormone levels. We have looked deeper for the cause with comprehensive history and targeted diagnostic testing. The results of the diagnostic evaluation will be used to formulate an individualized lifestyle and medicine program. The patient is then treated and evaluated regularly to assess the response and to assure their safety. Sometimes we find the non-hormonal therapies restore the hormone levels before we intervene, but when needed, they are highly effective. Some of these lifestyle measures are necessary to implement and critical for success. These include stress reduction techniques. They are important due to the way hormones are related in the body. Excess cortisol production in stress imbalances the other hormones. Exercise is crucial to clear the system and reset many intracellular processes that boost energy. There is nothing like high-intensity interval training to boost my energy and mood! Eating organic is the other critical leg of the foundational health platform that reverses heart disease and prostate cancer and turns on your rejuvenation and vitality genes.

Relief from Chronic Back Pain without the Risk of Surgery? It’s Coming Here to Sarasota! by Mary-Elizabeth Schurrer

I

t’s been over two decades since Dr. David Cifra, DC, observed a rampant need in the medical community for patients to access a non-invasive treatment for spinal disc injuries without the pain and risk of drugs or surgery. Trained in addressing chronic back issues, Dr. Cifra is a nationally certified practitioner in the field of Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD). This breakthrough medical technology is used to repair degenerated, stressed, herniated or bulging discs with a conservative approach that eliminates the need for complex surgeries and subsequent medications for recovery. Dr. Cifra was first drawn to NSSD because it enabled him to offer a solution to patients who had experienced no relief elsewhere. “From the start of my career, I wanted to help those with complicated issues who did not respond to conventional methods. This advanced technology allows patients to heal without surgery. People come to me as their last defense before epidural injec-

tions, narcotics and unnecessary surgeries,” he explains. So how does the process of NSSD actually work? Dr. Cifra describes it like the metaphor of a garden. “Think of an impaired disc as a garden that’s starting to die because its nutrition source has been shut off. Conventional medicine procedures cut away those dead segments of the disc, but my approach will suck the nutrient material back into this damaged area which nourishes and lubricates the disc, restoring it to life once again.” NSSD is a safe, gentle and effective treatment protocol for anyone who suffers from a number of conditions related to the spinal column such as the aforementioned degenerative, herniated or bulging discs, as well as sciatica, stenosis, and chronic neck or lower back pain, to name just a few. Dr. Cifra adds, “One testimonial of success I love talking about is an 80-yearold former patient of mine who had sustained major damage to her spine in addition to other medical issues too. She had been to the Laser Spine Institute but found no results there, and when she came to me, the energy of her body was split in conflicting directions. I treated her with NSSD, and she finally experienced relief.

Now I use her story as an example that if an 80-year-old woman can heal from chronic pain, then don’t be discouraged— you can too!” In fact, Dr. Cifra is so confident and passionate about this technology that he is opening a second location to his Syracuse, New York-based practice here in Sarasota. This latest expansion to his work comes on the heels of a recent advanced training certification he obtained in 2018 through the International Disc Education Association, Disc Centers of America and International Medical Advisory Board on Spinal Decompression. This is considered the “gold standard” for accreditation in this field, and is only awarded to a select few doctors each year. Dr. Cifra plans to continue this benchmark of efficacy and excellence as he welcomes patients to his brand new Sarasota office this month. Appointments can be scheduled as early as September, and consultations are always free of charge. “All you have to lose is the pain,” he quips in conclusion. Dr. David Cifra, DC, specializes in the treatment of complicated, progressive spinal injuries with the use of Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression. His newly opened practice is located at 2415 University Parkway, Sarasota. During stress, the body is primed to resist or escape a threat, and … it’s not going to prioritize restorative activities. laureate Elizabeth Blackburn, it is now understood that prolonged daily stress weakens DNA structures by shortening chromosome-protecting telomeres, a major component in premature cell death and the trigger of genetic, predisposed markers for disease. Studies by Dr. Owen Wolkowitz, of the University of California, San Francisco, demonstrate the link between shortened telomeres and insufficient response to free radicals, resulting in chronic inflammation, now believed to be the catalyst of most degenerative

Age-Defying Bodywork How to Turn Back the Clock by Marlaina Donato

t has been said that stress kills, and it often can be a slow and premature process, leading to common but avoidable symptoms of decline: impaired memory, loss of mobility, fatigue and decreased libido. Good nutrition, getting enough sleep and staying active contribute to vitality; however, fortifying the nervous system is critical to combating age-accelerating stress hormones like cortisol. The key to keeping body and mind young may lie in the therapeutic modalities of bodywork, an umbrella term for up to 350 methods that include massage, energy work and meridian-based therapies like acupuncture, shiatsu and reflexology, which can improve quality of life and promote cellular integrity. Once considered a luxury confined to spas and private home sessions, bodywork is moving into the medical mainstream with reputable hospitals like the Memorial Sloan Ket32

tering Cancer Center, in New York City, which offers reiki sessions and instruction for patients and caregivers. According to a survey by the American Hospital Association, reiki and its close cousin Therapeutic Touch comprise one of three top complementary therapies in American hospitals, along with massage therapy and music. The Arthritis Foundation recommends massage for all types of arthritis and pain syndromes like fibromyalgia, as it can reduce discomfort and stress.

diseases. Psychological stress, according to research published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, changes how the body regulates inflammatory response. “Stress and inflammation cause pain and disease,” says Certified Reflexologist and holistic practitioner Martha Garland, of CreativeSpirit Healing Arts, in Baltimore. “All of this that we carry in our bodies will make us feel much older than our years.” Through application of pressure on specific reflex zones on the feet, hands and ears, reflexologists like Garland can help promote the natural flow of bodily functions. “Reflexology, a modality that is separate from massage therapy, reduces the tension, stress and pain that we hold in our feet and in the rest of our body, which can promote longevity and better quality of life,” she says. Certified craniosacral therapist Margaret Connolly, of Narberth, Pennsylvania, agrees that mental or emotional

strain plays a key role in the aging process. “During stress, the body is primed to resist or escape a threat, and in that situation, it’s not going to prioritize restorative activities,” she says. Craniosacral therapy (CST) focuses on the cerebrospinal fluid and the meninges surrounding the brain, spinal cord and related connective tissue, and helps the body drop out of excessive fightor-flight mode.

Pain, Serotonin and Substance P

Bodywork and its ability to impact the chemistry of stress has far-reaching effects on most bodily systems. Studies in 2016 from the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine have shown that massage therapy helps to regulate hormones, boost immunity, improve attentiveness and ease the symptoms of depression. Licensed Massage Therapist Michele Duncan King, of Sea Spell Massage, in Cannon Beach, Oregon, knows firsthand how her work can assist in counteracting the energy-sapping effects of stress. “When the digestive system doesn’t go into the ‘rest-and-digest’ state via activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, it can affect muscles, joints, organs and hormones. This, along with elevated cortisol, can certainly make us function less optimally, making us feel older and less vibrant.” Traditional massage modalities such as Swedish, deep tissue, Thai and Lomi Lomi help reduce blood pressure, boost immunity by augmenting natural killer cells, decrease symptoms of depression and support the cardiovascular system. It can also assist lymphatic movement, which can prevent cold hands and feet and achiness. Massage also raises serotonin and dopamine levels, neurotransmitters that play vital roles in memory, mood regulation and immunity. Most significantly, higher serotonin levels are linked to lower levels of substance P, a neuropeptide that is central in pain perception. It soars during times of stress, anxiety and insufficient sleep, and has also been linked to tumor growth and inflammatory conditions.

As human beings, touch is so important. ~Anita Bondi

Multidimensional Well-Being

Bodywork can assist the physical body, but it can also be a restorative balm for the emotions and psyche. “As human beings, touch is so important. Massage modalities invite safe, healing touch,” says Anita Bondi, licensed massage therapist and a founder of the Wellspring Holistic Center, in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. “A good therapist will also educate a client about other benefits of a more holistic lifestyle. I believe any time we give ourselves permission to listen to the body’s wisdom and follow its lead, we reduce stress and increase well-being.” While women are more apt to include bodywork sessions in their health care,

men can be hesitant. Connolly encourages both women and men to experience CST and other modalities. “Sometimes men are a bit nervous about being touched, whether the practitioner is male or female. Even when open to hands-on therapy, some men believe extremely deep pressure is needed in order to be effective.” Not so, says Connolly, who cites the experience of Mark Bertolini, CEO of the Aetna health insurance company, who credits CST with saving his life when he was contemplating suicide and suffering severe neuropathic pain from a skiing accident.

Menopause and Cognitive Function

CST can also have an impact on women’s hormonal changes. “Very slight movement of tissues near the pituitary gland can exert a subtle pumping motion on the master gland in a way that will facilitate its

ability to produce and release hormones,” explains Connolly. The therapy is sometimes used in conjunction with acupuncture, which also impacts hormones and works on the brain. A 2018 study by Chinese researchers published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine shows neuronal improvement through acupuncture in both cognitively impaired patients and healthy individuals.

Tools for Life

Most practitioners believe that deriving benefits from bodywork requires consistency, which can support longevity in unexpected ways. Garland says, “What really makes a difference in reducing chronic stress is consistent stress reduction. One session occasionally will feel good and reduce tension temporarily, but will not make a major difference in reducing stress in the long term.” King agrees: “A massage once a month is my recommendation for ideal overall maintenance, and more frequent sessions for specific conditions or goals.” Research and results confirm that well-being is not a luxury, but a necessity, and puts to rest the idea that bodywork is a guilty pleasure. “The more we do to help ourselves, the better our lives will be as we age,” says Bondi. Shoulder Pain Relief through Fascia Therapy

by Eric Winder, DC

R

elieving shoulder pain requires a careful, thorough approach for this complicated joint. The shoulder moves more than any other joint in the human body, so both its movement and stability depend on over a dozen muscles. The successful treatment of many shoulder problems hinges on accurately finding which muscles are problematic and then applying treatments that will restore muscle function and balance. To illustrate the complexity of shoulder issues, let’s examine the cases of three recent patients of mine whom I will refer to as Pat, Larry and Sue. Pat could not raise her left arm to her head to style her own hair, and had been diagnosed with tendonitis. Larry could not reach behind himself or even into the back seat of his car. He was told that he had bursitis in his right shoulder. An MRI of Sue’s right shoulder exposed a small rotator cuff tear. She was unable to lift a coffee mug or drive her car without intense pain. Each of these patients had different problems, but the roots of their pain could be traced back to their fascia, a fibrous connective tissue. Three Problems Pat’s tendonitis occurred because lifting her arm caused a tendon to be pinched. Examination showed that her latissimus dorsi muscle, which is the largest shoulder muscle, was contracted and overly tight whenever she lifter her arm. This caused the joint to align incorrectly during motion which resulted in the pinch.

Larry could not reach behind himself because of tension in the pectoral (chest) muscles and restriction of the fascia at the front of his shoulder joint. These issues were likely caused by a hard fall onto concrete two years prior which caused shoulder pain for several weeks. In Sue’s case, shoulder movement was weak and unstable due to uneven tension and weakness in the muscles around her shoulder blade. Sue’s pain and discomfort had developed gradually over several months, rather than making a sudden appearance. The instability and awkwardness in her shoulder movements caused a gradual degeneration that led to her rotator cuff tear. Solving the Problems The solutions to these different problems shared one aspect in common—the need to restore muscular balance and stability to the shoulder. With the utilization of therapy to release restriction in the fascia, stress was removed from the irritated tendons and connective tissue, allowing it to heal. This kind of fascia release in the shoulder often relieves pain even when there is a minor tear or other injury. In the cases of Pat, Larry and Sue, all three found significant relief and ability to return to their daily activities. Pat required fascia treatment in the lower back area where the latissimus muscle is anchored. There were also restrictions in the fascia of the left side of her rib cage and her left biceps muscle. In addition to fascia release therapy, she also received a specific massage therapy to coincide with treatment to her lower back. After a few weeks of treatment, she was able to raise her left arm almost as high as the right with comfort and ease. In addition to treating Larry’s pectoral muscles and right shoulder joint, fascia restriction in his thoracic spine (mid-back) also needed to be released. Low-level laser therapy was also used to relieve pain and inflammation deep within the shoulder joint. Over time, he gained a full range of motion. I did, however, warn him to stop reaching behind himself from the front seat of his car into the back, for sales samples and his briefcase. That position is

unnatural and stressful to the shoulder and can cause injury, as he found out. Sue’s primary issue was in the serratus anterior muscle under the shoulder blade. She also had restricted fascia at the base of her neck and down her triceps. After a fascia release therapy, Sue learned to perform specific shoulder stretches and exercises to accelerate her healing and prevent re-injury. After the treatment was complete, Sue could drink her morning coffee and drive without complaint. She still had to avoid heavy lifting due to the rotator cuff tear, but otherwise, she had no problems with daily activities. The Common Thread No two shoulder problems are exactly the same. However, almost all issues with the shoulder can be improved by restoring muscular balance and stability to the joint. There are many important parts to a successful treatment plan for the shoulder which includes stretching, strengthening, and sometimes low-level laser or microcurrent therapy. The treatment that I find most critical is usually fascia therapy because restrictions in the fascia are often the main cause of muscle weakness, tension or imbalance. When fascia therapy is combined with other treatment methods to restore muscular balance and control of the shoulder joint, many types of shoulder pain can be significantly reduced or relieved entirely. This is even true when shoulder surgery has failed to resolve the shoulder pain or created new pain due to scar tissue. You are invited to attend an evening program on September 25, during which you can learn in-depth about fascia, why it is important and how to solve fascia problems when they create pain. Dr. Eric Winder will discuss case examples, provide a treatment demonstration and hold a Q&A session following the presentation. Attendees are invited to arrive at 6:45 p.m. for refreshments, and the program itself will take place from 7–8 p.m. This free event is located at 3131 S Tamiami Trail, #102, Sarasota. To RSVP, call 941-957-8390. Dr. Eric Winder has 21 years in practice, and focuses on relieving pain and restoring alignment and motion through fascia release therapies, without forceful manipulation. For more information, visit GentleBay.com.    September 2019

They know firsthand what many parents fear—that kids are missing out on developing life and social skills because of technology that has been deliberately designed to be addictive. Recent studies link excessive digital use by kids to anxiety, depression and, according to a team of University of Southern California scientists published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, a doubled risk of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder compared with infrequent users. However, there are sound strategies that we can use to help kids navigate the electronic wilds, say experts. “Parent like a tech exec by establishing strong tech limits and actively engaging your kids instead with family, school and the outdoors,” advises Richard Freed, Ph.D., a Walnut Creek, California, child and teen psychologist and author of Wired Child: Reclaiming Childhood in a Digital Age.

Websites and games can be blocked or limited within the devices themselves. Consider replacing the Safari or Chrome browser on a device with a kid-friendly version like Mobicip or GoogleSafeSearch, or installing in-depth monitoring programs such as Net Nanny, Norton Family Premier or Qustodio Parental Control.

Do a family digital detox.

During one Sunday a month at home, a weekend away camping or a vacation at a remote spot, keep all devices off and

n Ayurveda, food is medicine,” says Susan Weis-Bohlen, the Reisterstown, Maryland, instructor and author of Ayurveda Beginner’s Guide: Essential Ayurvedic Principles and Practices to Balance and Heal Naturally. “How we feed ourselves is the first line of disease prevention and longevity.” First developed in India some 5,000 years ago, Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest medical systems. It works to rebalance mental and physical health in coordination with mind-body energy types called doshas. The primary ones—Vata, Pitta and Kapha—correlate to the five elements of space, air, fire, earth and water, and can fluctuate over time. An Ayurvedic diet can help address dosha imbalances and optimize health and well-being. New York City chef, restauranteur and author Divya Alter embraced Ayurveda while suffering from an autoimmune disorder that conventional medicine couldn’t cure. “Food was instrumental to my healing,” she says.

Eating in Season “Ayurveda is about living in harmony. Eating seasonally and locally, you not only get the most nourishment, but also rekindle your relationship to food and the environment,” says Nishita Shah, of The Ayurvedic Institute, in Albuquerque. 38

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

“In Ayurveda, we look to seasons to determine what to eat based on what is naturally available, like eating light juicy fruits in summer rather than the heavy root vegetables abundant in winter,” notes Weis-Bohlen. Spices and herbs have powerful healing properties that can be combined in

Proper combination and selection of ingredients are a critical component of Ayurveda, according to Alter, author of What to Eat for How You Feel: The New Ayurvedic Kitchen. She says, “Well-prepared food is easy to digest and protects prana—the food’s living force or energy—so it can nourish and energize.” Ayurveda also focuses on the “six tastes” ideally present in every dish: sweet, sour, salty, astringent, bitter and pungent. “Western cuisine has a strong salty and sweet bias. Health issues arise from an imbalanced palate,” says Shah. Alter adjusts taste profiles according to the season and the individual’s dosha. “Bitter foods can be very cleansing and help eliminate winter sluggishness. More pungent foods are good in the spring, when the body may feel congested and heavy after winter,” she says.

Natural Awakenings recommends using organic, non-GMO (genetically modified) and non-bromated ingredients whenever possible.

The Beginner’s Ayurvedic Kitchen

he rules of Ayurvedic cooking can seem overwhelming, but there are simple ways to start aligning our diet with its principles. “There is a profound knowledge behind Ayurvedic cooking, but the methods of preparation are easy; you don’t need to be a skilled chef,” says chef, restauranteur and author Divya Alter. “One portion of food should fit in your hands when cupped together,” says Nishita Shah, of The Ayurvedic Institute. “Any more is going above and beyond what the body needs and can handle.” “Energetic imbalances can fluctuate, so what you need now doesn’t have to be what you eat for the rest of your life,” says Alter. Shah uses color to guide her cooking, declaring a dish done when its greens are at peak vibrancy.

www.nasrq.com

Alter stresses eating according to the strength of your digestion. “Someone with a fiery or strong digestion may need to eat heavier foods and more frequent meals.” Cooking with fresh, high-quality and ideally, organic ingredients is key. Food should be prepared soon after purchase and consumed soon after preparation to maximize flavors and nutrition. Ayurvedic cooking enhances natural flavors, while optimizing digestion, nutrient absorption and waste elimination. “How you experience food after a meal is just as important as how you feel while eating it. Deep frying, charring or cooking at high temperatures makes food hard to digest, overheats the liver and causes acidity,” says Alter.

To address diners’ differing doshas at her restaurant, Divya’s Kitchen, Alter focuses on seasonal dishes that incorporate all six tastes. “By definition, these are tri-doshic foods which can balance all three dosha types.” Good tri-doshic foods include asparagus in spring, berries in summer and root vegetables in winter. “Cooked leafy greens can also be tri-doshic,” says Alter, adding that spices can tweak the natural dosha effect of a given food.

Ayurveda’s rules of the kitchen—such as avoiding cold, raw, processed or microwaved foods, not combining fruits with other foods, and making lunch the heaviest meal of the day—can run counter to the typical Western diet, but with time, Ayurvedic cooking can become intuitive. Ayurvedic meals don’t need to be complicated or challenging to prepare. “A simple apple or plain rice can nourish us,” says Shah. One of Alter’s favorite recipes is an apple or pear stewed with cloves, prepared and eaten first thing in the morning to stimulate the digestive system. Plain almonds are another good protein snack, especially in aiding digestion when soaked and peeled, she advises. A “Buddha bowl” packed with colorful, sautéed vegetables, lentils and a grain like quinoa, barley or millet makes for a simple, nourishing, well-balanced meal, says Shah. “I try to add just enough spice to enhance the flavor, while still being able to taste the sweetness of a carrot or the bitterness of chard.” A cook’s mindset is as important as the meal itself, say Ayurvedic practitioners. Alter believes mindfulness while cooking and eating not only enhances our experience, but also our digestion. Ayurvedic cooking should be fun, ignite curiosity and taste great—not feel restrictive or lack flavor, says Shah. “Food should bring joy, and bring us back in tune with our bodies. Our bodies are smart and will tell us what they need.”

Beauty Buzz: Are Toxic ingredients in Your Skin Care? by Point Lumineux Staff

L

et’s talk about skin care products and the harmful chemicals often inside of them which can clog your pores and even promote cancer growth. Did you know the skin absorbs up to 60% of what you put on it? Even if a chemical isn’t so harmful that it has an immediate effect, some accumulate in the body and take a toll over time. If you deal with chemicals that are carcinogenic, interfere with hormones (endocrine disruptors), or are toxic to your nervous system, the goal is to minimize this exposure as much as possible. The product selection out there seems endless, and choosing a healthy option for your specific skin type can seem daunting. We want to make

it easier for you when deciphering what to use on your skin—or at least what to avoid. Here’s a list of the most toxic ingredients that you’ll want to steer clear of. Parabens Parabens are several distinct chemicals with a similar molecular structure. Several are common in a wide array of cosmetic and personal care products: ethylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben. Numerous studies have been conducted on both sides of the argument about parabens, so the question remains, should we avoid them? The problem with parabens has been identified because they are xenoestrogens. In other words, they mimic estrogen in

the body which has been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues including the early onset of puberty and reduced sperm count. SLS’s Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is a surfactant, detergent and emulsifier used in thousands of cosmetic products, as well as in industrial cleaners. It is present in nearly all shampoos, scalp treatments, hair color and bleaching agents, toothpastes, body washes and cleansers, make-up foundations, liquid hand soaps, laundry detergents, and bath oils or salts. Although SLS originates from coconuts, the chemical is anything but natural. The real problem with SLES/SLS is the manufacturing process (ethoxylation) results in SLES/SLS being contaminated with 1,4 dioxane, a carcinogenic by-product. Mineral Oil Mineral oil is a colorless and odorless oil that’s made from petroleum—as a byproduct of the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline. It’s long been used as a common ingredient in lotions, creams, ointments, and cosmetics. It’s lightweight

and inexpensive and helps reduce water loss from the skin. So, what’s the problem? It clogs pores- BIGTIME, it’s toxic (petrolatum) and most of all, it’s not doing anything for your skin. It’s not infusing it with nutrients. It’s not providing hydration that goes into the skin where it counts. Phthalates Phthalates are high-production volume chemicals used primarily as plasticizers in polyvinylchloride (PVC) products. Eight chemicals are included in the Phthalates Action Plan: dibutyl phthalate (DBP), diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), di-n-pentyl phthalate (DnPP), di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP), diisononyl phthalate (DINP) and diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP). Subsequently, adverse effects on the development of the reproductive system in male laboratory animals are the most sensitive health outcomes from phthalate exposure. Several studies have shown associations between phthalate exposures and human health, although no causal link has been established. Recent scientific attention has focused on whether the cumulative effect of several phthalates could multiply the reproductive effects in the organism exposed. Now that we have introduced you to a few of the main toxic ingredients to avoid, it’s time to start being a detective in terms of your skin care. Read all the labels and be conscious of what you put on your skin and internal organs. At Point Lumineux, we only use and sell products without toxic, cancer-promoting ingredients. Yoga gives us powerful tools so we may age gracefully. ~Lisa Moore

The Power of Yoga

Tapping Into the Life Force by Marlaina Donato

L

ongevity is something most of us strive for, and increasingly, research shows that implementing a consistent yoga practice can be a fruitful investment toward that goal. Yoga is an eight-branch system of well-being that encompasses exercise, meditation, conscious breathing, diet and other elements, but how it effects mind-body fitness alone is proving to be a reliable defense against age-related loss of mobility, cardiovascular disease and depression. Its stress-busting capabilities help to support challenged adrenal glands and lower elevated blood pressure. Getting on the mat can improve insulin sensitivity in diabetics and also help balance immune responses in individuals with autoimmune conditions or insufficient natural killer cells. Combined research from 22 studies by the University of Edinburgh reveals that yoga, compared to both sedentary lifestyles and other forms of exercise such as walking or chair aerobics, improved the lower-body strength and flexibility in individuals age 60 and older. The findings published earlier this year in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity 42

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

also showed improved quality of sleep and fewer symptoms of depression.

Fewer Health Risks, Stronger Bones

Yoga’s inverted poses increase blood circulation to vital organs, including the intestines, which facilitates assimilation of nutrients and waste elimination. Asanas like shoulder stand, bridge and downwardfacing dog stimulate blood flow from the lower extremities to the heart and fortify red blood cells by increasing hemoglobin, guarding against blood clots, stroke and heart attack. Yoga can also strengthen the bones. A 2016 study published in the International Journal of Yoga shows improved bone mineral density in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis. “Much like a house that sits empty or a car left to sit unused in a garage, our human parts can age and rot without movement. Movement creates more energy,” explains Nancy Poole, a teacher at Clarksburg Yoga and Wellness, in Clarksburg, Maryland. Joints lose flexibility as we age, but yoga movement provides them with essential oxygen, blood and nutrients. Lisa

www.nasrq.com

Moore, owner of Free to Be Yoga, in Great Falls, Montana, underscores, “A joint needs to move through its full range of motion to function well. Movement helps lubricate and cushion joints, provides nutrition and removes wastes.”

Stretching Into Joy

A 2014 hatha yoga study published in the Journals of Gerontology revealed increased cognitive function in older adults after eight weeks of yoga three times a week. Yoga’s super power lies in its capacity to reset the autonomic nervous system and ramp up mood-boosting serotonin while decreasing monoamine oxidase, an enzyme that disarms the effects of stress hormones like cortisol. Under the influence of yoga, the brain is bathed in calming neurotransmitters, combatting depression and anxiety, and instilling a sense of optimism. “Yoga also helps us to embrace the hard times and ride the waves. With the tools that yoga provides, we can swim toward the light. It also helps us to experience a more intimate relationship with body and soul, and in turn make better choices in all aspects of life,” notes Carmen Ferreira, owner of the Sunshine Barre Studio, in Rocky Point, New York. Moore concurs, advising, “Yoga gives us powerful tools so we may age gracefully. One of them is to manage stress with equanimity.”

The Breath of Life

Conscious breathing is at the core of a dedicated yoga practice, and a lowered risk of cardiovascular and respiratory disease gives us another reason to inhale and exhale deeply. Poole observes, “Our general population does not breathe correctly, and many of us even hold our breath unconsciously. For my students, the hardest part of yoga is learning to take deep, full breaths. Old breathing habits must be unlearned. Once

attention is given to the breath, tensions can be released.” “Yoga improves lung capacity and brings more energy to the cells, which in turn creates more energy and life force in our bodies,” says Ferreira. “It helps us to live from the heart’s center and foster a better quality of life,” she adds. “Each time we show up on our mats, we show up for ourselves, an opportunity to nourish the body, our one and only temple.” Marlaina Donato is an author of several books and a composer. How Yoga Therapy Changes Lives, Lifestyles and Medicine by Paula Morris, C-IAYT, ERYT, MA

T

imes have changed. Before the 1990s, few doctors and medical therapists were aware of yoga’s mind-body benefits to recommend to their patients. Medical science could save and enhance lives with heart bypass and angioplasty procedures, but these conditions would often reoccur. After serious injury and rehabilitation, patients were often left with addictive prescriptions to manage their pain. If a patient felt mentally stressed or emotionally disturbed by life events, most physicians did not address that side of health in consultations, and psychological care was separated from medical treatment. The effects of unmanaged chronic and post-traumatic stress received minimal attention until research named it the number one factor that impacted degeneration, health breakdown, increased medical risks and shortened lifespan. Now, the National Institute of Health includes yoga therapy among other recognized “complementary alternative medicines,” based on amassed international research that corroborates the significant efficacy and therapeutic value of this modality to healing from both pain and stress. Moreover, when yoga is adapted, individualized, and targeted to specific needs, the result is yoga therapy. Not only do more healthcare providers in both mental and physical medicine recommend yoga therapy to their patients, they also have started to discover how it improves their own health, well-being and performance. 44

Sarasota/Manatee Edition

Yoga therapy is effective because it is stress management for the mind, body and spirit. The modality integrates all of these as equal resources for health and healing, then adapts them to individual needs and limitations, just as is done in other targeted therapies. It exercises and restores the whole person through movement, breath, awareness, relaxation and meditation. One study from the 2011 Annals of Medicine concluded that 12 weeks of yoga therapy was twice as effective as 12 months of physical therapy for pain, as well as the most effective option for back pain. Clinical studies of patients with heart and other chronic diseases also saw diseases reduced or permanently reversed when yoga therapy was applied as a continuous lifestyle of self-care. A recent Harvard Medical School study compared those who practiced yoga and those who did not, and found a 43% lower incidence of medical visits for those who practiced regularly. However, sometimes these results cause misunderstandings. For example, a 1998 JAMA study attracted buzz about yoga’s benefits for carpal tunnel syndrome, and many people with this injury flocked to group classes which included typical weight-bearing poses on the hands and wrists that do not help the condition. The JAMA research was based on a therapeutic program designed solely for people with the syndrome. While yoga is beneficial, personalization is rarely possible in generalized group classes, and some people cannot—or should not— participate in them. Certified yoga therapists are trained and experienced to design and target which yoga tools will best affect a person, address their needs and limitations, and keep them safe. Yoga therapists primarily serve one-to-one or in small groups of a similar condition. A regular yoga teacher often cannot provide this. What makes yoga therapy unique is that it addresses a person’s total life condition, and the practitioner learns independence and skill in practices to optimize and self-regulate their overall health and functionality. Someone in

pain or recovery might practice reclined supported postures, breathwork and meditation until they are physically able for more. For a busy working parent, the practice might be just 15 minutes once or twice daily and one longer guided session once a week. Those healing tools—simple as they might seem— can profoundly improve health on all levels because we know the mind and body communicate with each other on a cellular level. This integrated and frequent dosage can be more effective in maintaining health and happiness than treating each body system separately—or not at all—until the symptoms indicate a problem. Yoga therapists create simple and individualized practices for at home and on-the-job applications, for prevention and recovery, so that everyone can access yoga’s health benefits in their differing lives, bodies, environments, ages, conditions and needs. To locate a certified yoga therapist near you, visit YogaTherapy.health or the International Association of Yoga Therapists at IAYT. org. Yoga therapists can be found educating schools and adult learning centers, and serving in private practice, wellness centers or hospitals around the world. You are never too old, and it’s never too early or late to begin. Yoga therapy is for anyone who desires to feel supported, strong and resilient through life’s changes or challenges of all kinds. This modality helps countless practitioners to continue to experience both purpose and enjoyment in their fullest, healthiest lives at each stage. Paula Morris, MA, C-IAYT, ERYT, is a Certified Yoga Therapist by the IAYT and experienced yoga teacher since 2007 who opened Empowered 2 Wellness Yoga Therapy in 2017 as a private practice in Sarasota. She offers consultations for free, and as a community leader in the use of yoga therapy for all, she designs wellness courses for Ringling College’s Osher Learning Institute. We had one bottle of Nestlé Pure Life with over 10,000 pieces of plastic. ~Sherri Mason, Ph.D.

The Re-Use Revolution Plastics Peril Drives New Strategies

D

by Yvette C. Hammett

aily news footage and photos capture the damage plastic is doing to the planet’s oceans: turtles ensnared in plastic nets, whales with guts full of plastics and aerial views of the burgeoning island of floating detritus known as the Pacific Garbage Patch. Tiny pieces of plastic are even showing up in our food and drinking water. The growing plastics crisis has some people yearning for the days when soft drinks and beer all came in reusable containers that required a deposit, or when milk and cream were delivered to the front porch in quaint, glass bottles. Sherri Mason, Ph.D., sustainability coordinator at Penn State Behrend, in Erie, Pennsylvania, believes this is exactly the direction this issue may take. “I do think some of it will be a return to glass,” she says. Mason conducted a study in 2018 and discovered that bottled water contained tiny bits of microplastic. An earlier tap water study she conducted showed there were about five particles of plastic in a liter of tap water, if averaged across the globe. “We thought that would shock people into demanding change. Instead, a lot of the comments were to drink more bottled water.”

In the 2018 study, Mason and her team, then at the State University of New York at Fredonia, tested 259 bottles of water from nine countries that included all the top brands in the U.S.—Dasani, Aquafina and Nestlé Pure Life, among them. “On average, for every liter of bottled water in total, you would be ingesting 325 pieces of plastic. We had one bottle of Nestlé Pure Life with over 10,000 pieces of plastic. These are the particles that can make their way across the gastrointestinal tract and be carried to your blood, liver, kidneys and brain,” Mason says. Analysis of the particles indicates that the plastics found in bottled water leach from the container itself, while the source in tap water may be PVC pipes and fittings. However, plastics are also ubiquitous in surface and groundwater, and may make their way into drinking supplies via air, wind, rain and industrial activity, according to an assessment published earlier this year in the journal Current Opinion in Environmental Science & Health. After Mason’s findings were released, the World Health Organization announced a review into the potential risks of plastic in drinking water. Meantime, the impact of plastic pollution on marine life—zooplank-

ton, seabirds, marine mammals and reptiles throughout the food chain—is well documented, according to a 2014 study published in the online journal PLOS ONE. The study estimates more than 5 trillion pieces of plastic, weighing somewhere near 269,000 tons, are floating in the Earth’s oceans. People are loudly calling for change, and innovators are responding. In the United Kingdom, there is the Plastics Pact, which brings together businesses from across the plastic industry to eliminate problematic or single-use plastics through redesign, innovation and alternative delivery models. A UK startup, Ooho, has created an edible water container made of seaweed to provide the convenience of plastic bottles while limiting the environmental impact. Tom Szaky, the CEO and founder of TerraCycle, a Trenton, New Jersey, recycling company, is among those pioneering a rebirth of reusing with a pilot project launched in May called Loop. The company has partnered with Proctor & Gamble, Nestlé, Clorox and other major brands to deliver and retrieve products in durable, reusable containers, just like the milk man. Consumers can order everyday items from the online Loop store—paying a deposit on the container—and UPS will deliver it to their doorstep, picking up empties to be washed, refilled and used again and again. “Hundreds of products, from Tide to Häagen-Dazs to Tropicana, are being delivered,” says Szaky. “It’s growing very fast in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Washington, D.C.; and we’ve just expanded to Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Delaware—eventually nationwide.” The re-use revolution is also taking shape in 10 states and a U.S. territory that have passed “bottle bills”: California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Vermont and Guam. Typically, the laws require a deposit of 5 to 15 cents be placed on all glass, plastic and metal containers. Yvette C. Hammett is an environmental writer based in Valrico, Florida. PET PEEVE Natural Remedies for

Allergies to Furry Friends by Julie Peterson

J

essica Martinez, a medical assistant and part-time dog groomer in Rockford, Illinois, was growing her family— a husband, two daughters and a young beloved husky. When their third daughter was born with health problems and an allergy to dogs, Martinez was determined to manage the situation. She cleaned fervently—vacuuming, wiping down hard surfaces, and bathing and brushing the dog every day. Everyone had to wash their hands frequently. In addition, the room where other dogs were

groomed had to be thoroughly cleaned after each session. It all eventually became too exhausting, and the husky was rehomed. But there may have been other options available to the family, say practitioners that treat patients with pet allergies. “I personally would rather not recommend that a patient not be around animals, because there are so many health benefits that animals can bring,” says Rosia Parrish, a naturopathic doctor at Boulder Natural Health, in Colorado, and a spokesperson for the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.

Allergen Alert

Some families opt for one of the so-called hypoallergenic breeds of dogs or cats. However, experts at the American Lung Association and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology advise that all warm-blooded animals shed dander: flecks of skin containing proteins that can cause allergies. Additional allergens exist in proteins from saliva, urine and feces. Because proteins, not fur, are to blame, even short-haired or hairless dogs and cats can elicit an allergic response. They’re present in the dander of all mammals, including horses, rabbits, cows and mice. “Allergies are caused when the immune system cannot discern the difference between a safe protein, such as egg, and a dangerous protein, such as mold, and it starts attacking the wrong ones,” says Barbara Meconis, a registered nurse and owner of Holistic Care Approach, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In the home, these proteins can easily become airborne and cling to surfaces and clothing. They can be carried by people to pet-free schools and hospitals, making the proteins difficult to avoid, so for those that deal with symptoms that range from watering eyes to difficulty breathing, allergies can flare up in unlikely places.

Traditional Medical Response

“Allergies are one the most complex, unresearched topics,” says Meconis. Because of the general lack of knowledge in the field of immunology, people with allergies may have difficulty finding relief, especially

I personally would rather not recommend that a patient not be around animals because there are so many health benefits that animals can bring. ~Rosia Parrish when multiple or severe allergies are present. Pet owners aren’t given many choices. “In the last five years, there is a working theory regarding being desensitized with incremental exposures, but there is no proof,” says Meconis. “Elimination has always been the answer from mainstream allopathic medicine, so if you are allergic to pets, they say, ‘don’t have a pet.’” Parrish suggests that making lifestyle changes may enable some people to keep a furry friend in their lives. Effectively preventing allergic reactions requires limiting exposure to the offending animal proteins. This can mean vacuuming often, using HEPA-grade air filters, removing carpeting, leaving coats and shoes at the door and washing sheets, mattress covers—and the pet—on a regular basis.

Alternative Treatments

At Holistic Care Approach, Meconis is trained in Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Therapy (NAET), a combination of allopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic, kinesiology and nutrition. Treatments are typically effective in as little as one session per allergy. “We reprogram the immune system so that it no longer ‘sees’ that particular allergen as an invader,” Meconis says. “By removing disharmony at the intercellular level, the body stops being so reactive.” Founded in 1983 by Devi Nambudripad, a California chiropractor and acupuncturist, today there are more than 12,000 NAET practitioners and they can be found at naet.com/practitioner-locator. Parrish recommends natural treatments for affected people such as steam showers and baths with thyme, eucalyptus and menthol to help clear passageways, along with anti-inflammatory supplements like boswellia, quercetin, nettle leaf, fish oil and magnesium. “Unless an allergy is severe, I think that living around cats, dogs and other furry animals is a really good thing and brings so much love and sloppy kisses into our lives,” she says. However, for a serious allergic reaction such as asthma, a pet lizard may be in order. Julie Peterson has contributed to Natural Awakenings for more than a decade. VENOUS RISING Natural Help for Varicose Veins

by Melanie Laporte

T

he season for wearing shorts and swimsuits may be coming to an end, but the unsightly—and often painful—puffy, blue streaks caused by varicose veins will likely remain an issue for many. While more than 40 percent of adults suffer from them, women are affected two to three times more often, according to a study in the journal BMJ Clinical Evidence. It cites child-bearing, especially more than two pregnancies, as one root cause of varicose veins. However, smoking, family history, obesity and professions that involve extended periods of standing and sitting such as chefs, hairdressers, office workers and healthcare professionals can also contribute to the condition. Birthdays can also be a factor. “As we age, the leg skin gets thinner from wear and tear,” says Marcelle Pick, an integrative OB/GYN nurse practitioner in Falmouth, Maine, resulting in even more visible veins. However, these lumpy blood vessels can cause more than cosmetic issues Varicose veins can promote pain, cramping, itching and swelling of lower legs, ankles and feet, as well as lead to more serious health conditions involving blood clots and poor circulation. There are a number of natural strategies that can alleviate symptoms and even prevent them from developing.

Get Moving

Varicose veins are the result of valve damage and loss of elasticity that allows blood 48

to pool inside the vessel. “When you’re standing still for a long period of time, the valves stop working and blood fills in the vein, creating more and more pressure, which dilates it like a water balloon,” says Dr. Mary Sheu, assistant professor of dermatology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Walking, swimming, cycling and trampoline jumping are among the most beneficial activities. Sheu says it helps to get up and walk around every half hour for those with a stationary desk job. “Do some squats or go on your tiptoes to get the blood pumping, so it’s not stagnant.” Aerial yoga or headstands are other exercises that help move blood from the feet to heart, along with using an inversion table that holds people upside-down. However, most people can’t stay in that position for any appreciable length of time, so an easy daily option is to elevate the legs on a pillow or small stool. “Any position where your legs are elevated above the level of your heart would help with the flow of fluid back towards the heart,” says Sheu. Work with gravity: the higher the elevation, the quicker blood returns to the heart.

Compression

Supportive legwear is another effective way to reduce water retention and swelling, boost circulation and improve pelvic posture. “Compression stockings help keep

everything cinched in so veins don’t stay dilated and the valves don’t move farther apart,” says Sheu, especially for frequent flyers stuck in a small seat for long flights. In addition to old-fashioned tights, support options range from chic, charcoal, high-denier hose and lacey knee socks to stylish compression leggings, athletic compression socks and light support pantyhose. Most are readily available in airports and retail outlets.

Nutritional Support

Because obesity is a known cause of venous issues, maintaining a healthy weight is essential to lessening pressure on the lower limbs. Pick recommends an antiinflammatory diet rich in antioxidants that helps increase blood circulation. Foods like blueberries, blackberries, leafy greens, beets and ginger are good options. Chamomile and dandelion tea can arrest fluid retention, which relates to swelling and heaviness in the legs, as do botanical herbs. Ascorbic acid and ginkgo biloba stimulate circulation, helping the veins and capillaries contract. Australian naturopath Leah Hechtman, who specializes in reproductive health, often sees women dealing with compromised veins. “Rutin, quercetin, and vitamin P bioflavonoids, taken in conjunction with vitamin C, are effective at improving the integrity of the vein and improving blood flow,” she says. Another flavonoid, red vine leaf, reduces swelling and symptoms of tension and heaviness in the legs. Jill Blakeway, a doctor of acupuncture and Chinese medicine in New York City and author of Energy Medicine: The Science and Mystery of Healing, advises, “CoQ10 increases circulation, while horse chestnut and bilberry reduce inflammation and increase fluid circulation.” She also recommends bromelain, which is an anti-inflammatory and reduces the risk of blood clots, with acupuncture to raise central qi, which improves the elasticity of blood vessels and improves blood flow.
