VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS HONORED The Nassau Bay Volunteer Fire Department celebrated their accomplishments at their annual banquet held at the new Nassau Bay Fire and EMS Station on February 23rd.

As a special tribute, Fire Chief Tom George and President Matthew Roper presented each NBVFD member with a flag flown over the new Fire and EMS Station. In recognition of his personal efforts, Fire Chief Tom George was also presented with a drawing of the new station with signatures from all NBVFD members.

SUMMER FUN IN NASSAU BAY

St. Paul’s Early Childhood Program: Looking for something fun for your children to do this summer? St. Paul’s Early Childhood Program is offering several weeks of summer fun for your little one. Beginning June 4th and ending July 18th, you have the option of choosing one week of their summer program, six weeks of the program, or anywhere in between.

NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB Spring is an awesome time of year, as one

will see Nassau Bay yards come out of a sleepy winter, and in this year’s case, very wet doldrums. This is the time of year that brings out the “gardener” in most people.

Many yards in Nassau Bay are lucky enough to have trees. But where does one start when thinking about landscaping or even adding a few plants?

Marie Leal, a Master Gardener, spoke recently to the Garden Club about landscaping in layers. Trees are the top layer as they can grow on an average of 15ft to 50ft. The next layer is shrubs, with the final layer being flowers.

Trees – Trees need to be pruned so the wind can easily blow through the branches. With pruning, the tree stays healthy and the branches are much less likely to come falling down into the yard.

Shrubs – Find a plant with a label that states it is suitable for Zone 9 weather. Decide if you want this shrub planted in the shade, partial shade, or full sun. Partial shade for a plant means it gets morning sun and is shaded from the hot summer sun. Full sun is generally six+ hours of total sunlight.

Flowers – Once the shrubs are planted, the next layer would be flowers. Flowers are divided into three groups.

(1) Annual flowers live for only one growing season during which they produce seeds and then die. Examples are impatiens, zinnias, and sunflowers.

(2) Biennial plants generally live for two seasons before setting seed and dying. Examples of these plants are some species of daylilies, Black Eyed Susans, and some species of salvia.

(3) Perennials are plants that live longer than two years.

Examples include the purple coneflower, Katie Ruella, lantana, Cape Plumbago, Mystic Spires, Blue Salvia, and some species of verbena.

With this new information take a walk in your own yard to think about what you want to do. Remember, a landscape doesn’t need to be completed all at once. Make a plan and maybe add a layer once a year or plant a section every year.

The point is to have fun and let your landscape reflect you!

CITY OFFICERS' ELECTION

The City has canceled the May 4, 2019 City Officers’ Election due to unopposed races. Councilmembers Don Matter and John Mahon have pledged to serve another two-year term on Council. On June 10th, Councilmembers Matter and Mahon will be sworn into office for their new terms.

Previous Councilmember Bob Warters, who also served on the 2018 Charter Review Commission as Chairman and currently serves on the Street Task Force and the CIP / Infrastructure Task Force, filed an application to run for Council Position 5, a position being left vacant

by Councilmember Jonathan Amdur (due to term limits). Unopposed, Bob Warters will be sworn in at the June 10th City Council meeting as well. The City thanks Jonathan Amdur for his eight years of service!

NBHA BOARD ELECTION The Nassau Bay Homes Association

(NBHA) is looking for individuals interested in serving the community. The NBHA is having its Board Election this May – three (3) Board Member positions are open.

Registration forms can be picked up at the NBHA office after April 8th, and need to be submitted by April 26th. Early voting will take place from May 6th to May 10th.

The official voting date will be May 17th.

Voting will take place at the new NBHA office located at 1322 Space Park Dr., Suite C-119. Thanks to all of the community members who have expressed ideas for the marina – ideas about projects in the community are always welcome. NBHA meetings are usually held the 3rd Thursday at 6:00pm in a conference room at the Space Park facility.

CIP PROJECT UPDATE

Nassau Bay is happy to report another finished project at David Braun Park.

The mechanical room, connected to the pavilion, was cleaned, renovated, and a new roof was installed. Once the pavilion stabilization project is complete, the side of the building facing the basketball floor will be painted with a large Nassau Bay logo.

YOUR $2 FIRE & EMS DONATIONS AT WORK The City of Nassau Bay Utility Department provides residents with the opportunity to make a voluntary $2.00 donation to the Nassau Bay Volunteer Fire Department (NBVFD) and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) with the payment of each water bill.

Donations are used by these departments for tools, resources, and capital items to better provide emergency services to our residents. During the past year, the Volunteer Fire Department was able to use this money to purchase replacement AEDs for two fire trucks, a storage trailer, and a light tower for the mobile command post, among other items. The EMS Department utilized these donations for rapid deployment gurneys and tourniquets for emergency planning.

Residents interested in donating to the NBVFD and EMS may simply add $2.00 to their payment when paying the “Total Due” amount on their water bill. Your donation may be considered a tax-deductible charitable donation because the City is a qualified entity and the donation is being used for a restricted public purpose. PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK

On Saturday, April 27th, from 10:00am to 2:00pm, the Nassau Bay Police Department will be partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to give the public an opportunity to rid their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

Bring any pills for disposal to the parking lot of Nassau Bay City Hall at 1800 Space Park Drive, Nassau Bay, Texas. Officers will be in the parking lot to collect and dispose of the drugs, and you will not need to leave your vehicle. The DEA cannot accept liquids, needles, or sharps, and will ONLY accept pills or patches on April 27th. The service is free and anonymous – no questions asked.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.

Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

HELP! SPRING HAS ARRIVED As Spring returns and brings us warmer weather, it also

brings the growing season, with pollen and those pesky weeds that can be seen popping up in driveways, sidewalks, and lawns. Spring is also Mother Nature’s call to begin “Spring Cleaning” around our homes. This is a good time of year to begin buttoning up any exterior maintenance items, including pressure washing, repairing loose shutters, touching up faded or peeled painted surfaces, cleaning and repairing fencing, and applying weed control to your lawn and cracks in your front walks and driveways.

Here are some tips that will keep the City of Nassau Bay Code Enforcement Department happy: Maintain your lawn and trees. Unkempt lawns are not only unappealing to view, but they can also serve as the perfect home for vermin. In addition to lawn care, trees are also important to maintain. Unhealthy trees can be hazardous, so it is crucial to have them evaluated to prevent costly projects and hazardous situations.

Ensure swimming pools are up to par. Standing water attracts mosquitoes, providing ideal breeding grounds.

It is important to maintain swimming pools and filtration systems to prevent mosquito infestations which can spread diseases.

Maintain the property structure. Properties that are detrimental to the community values and safety need to be properly addressed to upkeep the neighborhood.

Address and eliminate factors that threaten the property structure, such as excess clutter and weakened structural features.

In order to maintain the well-being of the community and avoid possible citations, it is important to maintain every aspect of your property. It is your responsibility.
