NASSAU BAY POLICE OFFICERS RECEIVE LIFE SAVING AWARD Officer Donald Linder and Officer Michael Cavazos received the Life Saving Award from the Nassau Bay Police Department. Chief Tim Cromie presented both officers with the award at the May 13, 2019 City Council Meeting. Officers Linder and Cavazos responded to the early morning call last March and found a 49-year-old male who had inflicted several serious slash wounds upon himself. Officers Linder and Cavazos provided immediate medical care despite the man’s combative actions, and assisted EMS with transporting the subject to a local hospital. Medical responders were able to save the man's life. The Nassau Bay Police Department congratulates Officers Linder and Cavazos for their proper application of training, experience, and equipment, all of which exemplifies their dedication to duty, the preservation of life, and service to the community.

CODE ENFORCEMENT: 18 LEEWARD LN.
Code enforcement remains a priority in the City of Nassau Bay. The Code Enforcement Team is working to make Nassau Bay neighborhoods safe, strong and attractive. Currently in the condemnation process, the home located at 18 Leeward Drive has been a code enforcement issue for the City for over 10 years. The owner of the property complied with the City’s requests, but has allowed the property to fall back into violation time and time again. After the passing of the homeowner, the property went into the court system, as there was no next of kin. Months of investigation and working with the courts, the City was given permission by an attorney representing the property to clean out the house and secure the structure. With the clean out costing the City approximately $10,000, Nassau Bay placed a lien against the property and expects reimbursement of these costs when the property is acquired by FEMA. The City hired a contractor to remove all of the items from the home, which took two full days with five employees working 8 hour days. Before Cleaning After Cleaning
NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB Epsom Salt in My Garden – Epsom salt (or in other words,
hydrated magnesium sulfate crystals) is a naturally occurring mineral with virtually hundreds of uses around the home and garden. Many gardeners swear by this inexpensive, readily available product, but opinions are mixed. There seem to be good, relevant reasons for using Epsom salts for plants. Epsom salt helps improve flower blooming and enhances a plant’s green color. It can even help plants grow bushier. Epsom salt is made up of hydrated magnesium sulfate (magnesium and sulfur), which is important to healthy plant growth. Magnesium allows plants to better take in valuable nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorus. It also helps in the creation of chlorophyll, which is vital for photosynthesis. In addition, magnesium greatly improves a plant’s ability to produce flowers and fruit. If the soil becomes depleted of magnesium, adding Epsom salt will help, and since it poses little danger of overuse like most commercial fertilizers, a gardener can use it safely on nearly all of their garden plants. Many plants, like beans and leafy vegetables, will happily grow and produce in soils with low levels of magnesium. Plants like roses, tomatoes and peppers, on the other hand, require lots of magnesium, and therefore, are more commonly watered with Epsom salt. When diluted with water, Epsom salt is easily taken up by plants, especially when applied as a foliar spray. Most plants can be misted with a solution of 2 tbsp. of Epsom salt per gallon of water once a month. For more frequent watering, every other week, cut this back to 1 tbsp. With roses, gardeners can apply a foliar spray of 1 tbsp. per gallon of water for each foot of the shrub’s height. Apply in spring as leaves appear, and then again after flowering. For tomatoes and peppers, apply 1 tbsp. of Epsom salt granules around each transplant or spray (1 tbsp. per gallon) during transplanting and again following the first bloom / fruit set. Garden Club is on its summer hiatus. The next meeting will be the second week in September. For more information, visit the Garden Club at www.NassauBayGC.org. If you have any questions or concerns please let us know.Send us pictures of your successful or unsuccessful endeavors. Happy gardening! Interested in more gardening tips? THANK YOU ST. THOMAS!
The Kindergarteners at St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal School took a field trip to the Nassau Bay Animal Shelter on Tuesday, May 8th. They took with them a check for $500, which they presented to Mr. Troy Bradfield and Mr. Kevin Meade, Animal Control Officers for the City of Nassau Bay. They were also able to interact and play with some of the dogs and cats at the shelter. St. Thomas’ students raised these funds by selling cookies – students learned about marketing, finance, economics, and how to entice customers! Many thanks to these students!
