MAY 1ST ELECTION RESULTS

Official results of the May 1st General City Officers' Election show 505 total Nassau Bay voters cast their vote for the May election, with voter participation percentages (almost 16%) surpassing any other City Council elections in our region (EL Lago ~ 9.7%, Seabrook ~ 5.5%, Webster ~ 2.6%). City Council held a Special City Council meeting on Wednesday, May 12th at 2:00pm to canvass the results of the May 1st General Officers’ Election. The canvass is an official certification of the May 1st election results. The canvassing authority (City Council) prepares a tabulation stating the total number of voters who cast a ballot for each candidate in the election. Nassau Bay could not legally perform this action until the City received the official results from the Harris County Elections Division. Donald C. Matter won the Council Position 1 race with 371 votes to Don Hollowell's 134 votes. Ashley Graves (Position 3) was unopposed and received 404 votes. Sandra Mossman (Position 5) was unopposed and received 431 votes. Official Results of the May 1st City Officers' Election Candidate

BE A RESPONSIBLE BOATER

As summer approaches, the City of Nassau Bay knows our waterways are enjoyed by our Nassau Bay residents. Please work with the City to keep our marine community safe, healthy, and open. Following a few simple rules will keep you safe, the City’s Marine Patrol Division safe, and allow you to enjoy your boat, jet ski, or other water vessels. For our boating community who will be out on the water this summer, here are some guidelines for being a responsible boater. General guidelines for friendly, safe boating: Do not create excessive wakes.

• Be careful not to swamp floating docks or other boats. • Don’t wash water over a swimmer or other person in the water. • Don’t cause severe rocking of another boat or vessel. • Avoid speeds and wakes that would cause other floating docks or boats to collide into another fixed or floating object.

Only travel at headway speed when coming within 50 feet of any other vessel, person, stationary platform, bulkhead, or the shore. No loud music – music or sound should not be heard more than 10 feet from your boat. Be courteous and thoughtful of the nearby homes. DO NOT operate a boat, jet ski, or other vessel while drinking or intoxicated. The City of Nassau Bay asks that you respect our residents who live along the water, as well as your fellow boaters. Remember to keep the wakes and the music volume to a minimum. Be courteous and enjoy the water. Thank you for doing your part to keep our boating community healthy and safe!

NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB

For the summer months, the Nassau Bay Garden Club will be on hiatus until the August 27th extravaganza Fundraiser at Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook. FEEDING THE WATERFOWL

The Nassau Bay Parks Committee knows that feeding ducks and geese at the Nassau Bay parks is a treat for many visitors, especially for young children. Unfortunately, bread is the dominant item that is being fed to the waterfowl. A recent “Hints from Heloise” states, “Ducks like the taste of bread, but it is bad for them. What are good choices to feed ducks? Lettuce, thawed raw peas, oats, birdseed, cooked rice, seedless grapes, and sweet corn - cooked or raw! Ducks in the wild eat grass, water plants, and insects. P.S. Making the ducks dependent on people feeding them is not ideal, but feeding them occasionally is OK." The Nassau Bay Parks Committee encourages visitors to our parks to follow Heloise’s advice. Also, if you feed the waterfowl, please do it in grassy areas away from the roadway and sidewalks. Thanks for helping to keep our waterfowl safe!

BEAT THE HEAT

Whether you are playing or working outside this summer, you should take the following precautions to stay safe in the heat: Cover Up: Wear light-colored, loosefitting clothing, a wide-brim hat, and sunglasses. Limit Direct Exposure: UV rays are most intense between 10am-4pm. Limit time outdoors during these hours. Use Sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher): Put on sunscreen before you go outside, even on cloudy days, and reapply every two hours if you are active and sweating or swimming. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water regardless of your activity level. Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink more fluids. Stay away from beverages that contain caffeine, alcohol, or large quantities of sugar. NEVER Leave Children or Pets in a Closed Car: In just a few minutes, temperatures can rise high enough to hurt or kill your loved ones. Know the Signs & Symptoms of Heat Disorders: Heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, sunburn, and heat rash are common conditions that you should be able to recognize.

HONORING SERGEANT KAILA SULLIVAN Texas Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony Sergeant Kaila Sullivan was honored and remembered at the 2021 Texas Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony and Candlelight Vigil on May 2, 2021. A total of 43 officers were remembered this year, combining those officers lost in 2019 and 2020. The ceremony was cancelled last year due to COVID-19 restrictions. The events included a Survivor’s Luncheon, balloon release, a visit to the Texas Peace Officer Memorial at the State Capitol grounds, an evening at the Texas Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony, followed by the Candlelight Vigil. Throughout the day, the surviving family members and coworkers were able to connect with other survivors from previous years, forming a bond that will be long lasting and supportive. Chief Cromie and Officer Brown were honored to accompany Sgt. Sullivan’s family for the weekend events. National Police Week In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week. National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. From May 9th to 15th, the City of Nassau Bay remembered the tragic loss of Sergeant Kaila Sullivan on December 10, 2019, in addition to the officers nationally and statewide who made the ultimate sacrifice. At the May 10th City Council meeting, Mayor Bob Warters proclaimed this week as National Police Week in honor of Sgt. Sullivan and our law enforcement communities.

PENINSULA WILDLIFE RESERVE

Just a friendly reminder, NO PETS are allowed on the Nassau Bay peninsula, as the peninsula is a designated wildlife reserve consisting of 76.5 acres of wetlands. The Nassau Bay peninsula is also a sanctuary for native plants and wildlife. The peninsula also serves as public access to enjoy wildscapes, opportunities for wildlife watching, and quiet escapes for urban residents to learn about life and nature. The peninsula is managed for conservation and to provide special opportunities for study or research. To ensure the protection of the wildlife in the peninsula, signs have been posted to notify the public that citations will be issued. Animal Control Officers will be working with the Police Department to identify violators and will issue citations. Additionally, a camera has been installed at the entrance gate to assist in identifying violators.

This event will begin in the St. Thomas parking lot (18300 Upper Bay Rd., Nassau Bay) at 7:45am for volunteers to help package boxes and bags of food into serviceable quantities of fresh fruits, vegetables, and sometimes meat and hygiene items. Distribution begins almost immediately. In May, St. Thomas served 75 cars with food for 350 people. If you are interested in serving or leading in this effort, please email Mike Stone at rector@sttaec.org. Nonparishioners are always invited to serve with St. Thomas.
