At the Council Meeting held on October 9, 2017, the City Council approved the tax rate that funds a portion of the maintenance, operations, and debt service in the FY18 Budget. The adopted tax rate was maintained at the same tax rate as the previous three years: $0.742120/$100 valuation. This tax rate is lower than both the effective and rollback tax rates. These projects include several improvements and rehabilitation projects to the water and wastewater system, stormwater drainage, street repair and improvements, lake dredging, park improvements, building improvements, a new Fire Station and much more. NASSAU BAY GARDEN CLUB Arbor Day Ceremony -
November 8 @ 10am The Nassau Bay Garden Club invites you to attend its Arbor Day Ceremony on Wednesday, November 8th at 10:00am in Howard Ward Park. Club members will meet at the gazebo to acknowledge the planting of a red drum maple in the park. Children from St. Thomas School will be a part of the celebration, helping to make it a very happy event. This is a beautiful and colorful maple tree, and best of all, well adapted for our area. November Social & Program - November 14 @ 9:30am The Nassau Bay Garden Club also invites you to visit the November meeting that will put you in the mood for the holiday cooking ahead. Is there anything more satisfying than bringing something you've grown yourself to your dinner table? Whether it's rosemary sprigs you place across your baking turkey, greens in the salad, cilantro in the salsa, or flowers for the centerpiece, adding a personal touch from your own garden is something to be proud of. Or maybe you're an expert in choosing good ingredients at your favorite store? No matter, the meeting topic will be holiday cooking and it promises to bring new and fabulous ideas. Be sure to get to the meeting early to sample the treats made by members. You will be most welcome!
THANK YOU NASSAU BAY
In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, a special GoFundMe account was set up for the sixteen City of Nassau Bay employees who suffered damage to their homes during Harvey. This Gofundme account was coordinated by Stacey Amdur, Nassau Bay's Special Events Chairman and wife of Councilmember Jonathan Amdur. Over 130 donors raised almost $22,000, and funds went directly to employees to help them recover from damage incurred to their homes and vehicles. The City would like to thank all individuals and local businesses who contributed! Public Works employee Kathy George, who has worked for the City for six years, also wanted to share a special note:
Dear Nassau Bay Residents, For years I have enjoyed working for the Nassau Bay citizens and getting to know so many that make me want to be a better employee and person. Your generosity in starting and contributing to a Gofundme account for those of us impacted by Harvey while you all have suffered from Harvey is more than generous and has humbled me. What a blessing to work for people that appreciate employees and continuously show their appreciation and compassion. I can’t speak for all the employees impacted by the flooding, but because of your generosity I will be able to replace drywall, baseboards, and flooring. And even more importantly, I am so grateful to work here, live in Texas, and feel blessed to know my children and I are not alone. They too are grateful for you all and because of you all feel they are a part of this special place, Nassau Bay. Thank you for donating and thinking of us during your own time of need. It is a pleasure working for you all and I hope to do so for many more years. Sincerely, Kathy George

TIPS FOR PLANTING TREES Fall is the ideal time for planting trees and shrubs in Texas. Fall is here! And as hot summer temperatures slowly cool down, it's a great time to plant trees and shrubs. The cooler weather allows their root systems to develop and get established so that the tree or shrub can take full advantage of springtime growth. Also, this more established root system is better prepared for next summer’s heat. When you plant trees and shrubs, it’s good for the environment and saves money. They increase property value, provide shade, reduce energy bills, and help keep the air clean.
TIP # 1: Select the right species for your location. Pick one that will grow well in your part of the state and make sure it has plenty of room to grow. To find the right species for your location, check out the Texas A&M Forest Service Tree Selector website at http://texastreeplanting.tamu.edu. TIP # 2: Handle the plant by the root ball, not by the trunk. Remove the plant from the container. Carefully place the tree or shrub in the hole.
TIP # 3: Backfill the hole, using only the soil removed from the hole; do not use soil amendments. Water the plant thoroughly to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets. TIP # 4: Do not fertilize your tree or shrub after planting. Wait until early in the spring, and even then, go lightly because fertilizer may burn and injure the roots. TIP # 5: Dig a hole two to three time wider, but no deeper than the root ball. Plant the tree or shrub slightly higher than the surrounding soil to allow for settling and increased soil drainage.
TIP # 6: Soak the root ball and surrounding soil. After planting, water thoroughly every seven to 10 days. More frequent watering may encourage root rot. TIP # 7: Add four to six inches of mulch around the base to help conserve soil moisture. Get more landscaping tips at www.takecareoftexas.org.
