HISTORY OF
Tunbridge Wells in 1748. From an engraving by Samuel Richardson
Royal Tunbridge Wells
In the Wealden tradition, the evidential history of the Tunbridge Wells area reaches back to the iron age, when people carved out an existence ploughing the land and mining the iron-ore from the rich rocky sandstone outcrops. Such landscape typifies the beauty of the Weald forest ridge area in which we live– one of England’s finest. Mid-20th century excavations by James Money at High Rocks (Tunbridge Wells) uncovered the remains of a defensive hill-fort thought to have been occupied in Roman Britain. The Wealden iron industry of 16th century fame continued into the late eighteenth century – the landscape today is still awash with evidence of the forges.
Returning to London on horseback, Lord North drank from the Chalybeate Spring to quench his thirst - chalybeate means iron-rich; the iron taste is evident in the water, it dyes everything orange too.
The history of the ‘wells of Tunbridge’ (old spelling for Tonbridge) began when, at the beginning of the 17th century, one very enthusiastic nobleman, Dudley, 3rd Baron North lauded its ‘magical’ qualities in a raving recommendation. A courtier to James I, Lord North had spent several days ‘recuperating’ at the Abergavenny Estate, Eridge, which happened to include gluttonous merriment of much rich food and wine.

HISTORY OF ROYAL TUNBRIDGE WELLS
He noticed the reddish-brown hue waters of the spring foaming slightly from the ground and took his chances. Feeling greatly refreshed and instantly ‘clearing his head’ he continued on his journey to the London court. Since that moment of inception, the wells continued to be known (second only to the Spa town of Bath), as the great place of English ‘water healing’ and drew the infirm, diseased and the curious. Thirty years after its discovery, the first buildings were erected: two small cottages, one for ladies and the other for gentlemen, set up as a coffee and pipe-smoking rest stop. Its rooted and unequivocal connection to royalty occurred when Charles I’s physician, sent his wife, Henrietta Maria, to the springs to “re-establish her health” after the birth of Prince Charles in 1630. She remained there for a full
six weeks. Soon after this prestigious visit, the area was renamed Queen Mary’s Wells – it didn’t stick and other names followed afterwards, including Frant Wells. Well into the 17th century the area came to have access to an assembly-room, a bowling green, in nearby Rusthall. At Southborough there was a bowling green, a coffeehouse, and a great number of lodgings. The advantages and diversions of the area increased but the distance to such nearby towns was inconvenient, especially in inclement weather when the route of escape to shelter, all became too much. The terrain of the (now) town is fairly hilly and was not conducive to widescale building. However, ‘Mount Sion’ the first to be built upon, as houses were transported and rebuilt on the hill. A chapel was soon established so people could attend religious duties, and shortly followed by taking in the various amusements at thereabouts. The connection to royalty continued with the appearance of a Danish princess and later Queen Anne brought her 9-year-old son Prince William, Duke of Gloucester. The prince fell on a slippery slope, so, the queen provided money to pave the walks.
Henrietta Maria painted by Sir Peter Lely after the restoration of her son Charles II to the throne.
The fame of the wells however, was only in its nascent years. The height of its popularity reached a crescendo in the
Frederick, Prince of Wales
following century. In 1739, Frederick, Prince of Wales and his wife, Princess Augusta of SaxeGotha, appeared in the now established spa town. The second daughter of King George II visited in 1762 and the Duke of York and the Duke of Gloucester in 1765 who were welcomed with a triple discharge of eighteen pieces of cannon. An eighteenth-century guide book described it thus: “The place itself is now in a very flourishing state, with a great number of good houses for lodgings, and all necessary accommodations for company; its customs are settled, its pleasure regulated, its markets and all other conveniences fixed, and the whole very properly adapted to the nature of a place, which is at once designed to give health and pleasure to all its visitants.” To be continued next month.

Crowborough charity hits new record for Covid Emergency Fund World in Need (WIN) is a passionate team of local part-time paid staff and volunteers who serve the needs of 13 centres in 10 countries in Africa and Asia. It hopes to hit £100,000 in Covid support after a phenomenally generous response by local supporters. “We’re overwhelmed by public response to the needs of our centres, who are all in desperate situations as a result of covid,” says CEO Rob Holmes. “We impact the lives of thousands of children and families in the most desperate of situations every month and it’s absolutely amazing and all down to the good hearts of local people, that in just a few months we’ve already raised over £45,000. And the number keeps rising. We really can’t thank donors enough, and we’re very optimistic about hitting targets and helping even more communities in need.” With no other source of income except donations and child sponsorship, WIN has been able to send additional funds to buy life-saving food and medical supplies for their projects. Funds also support specific church and community initiatives across the 13 centres, including access to fresh water, food provision, and the sponsorship of more than 350 children, who are rescued from a life of desperate poverty and squalid conditions. “These young people are given hope for the future with education, along with hot food, medical care and safe housing,” Rob explains.
“And this fund is helping us go further than ever before to support and make a difference. We feel it’s important for our local community to know there is positive news through this intensely difficult time, and that the support they are giving is quite literally changing, and saving lives. We really wanted to say thank you for putting us on target and making all this happen.” Hope can arrive in many different shapes. At the children’s home in the Punjab in India, a WIN corporate sponsor provided funds for a new buffalo, desperately needed to provide good nourishing dairy products. In N. Uganda, private and corporate donors combined to raise funds for a new water well, providing water for domestic use and for irrigation of local farmland that is worked on by the young men that have been educated through WIN child sponsorship. World in Need are currently running a campaign to increase child sponsorship, this is being carried out both locally and nationally with the help of a team of existing and new volunteers, co-ordinated by our Child Sponsorship Manager. Details of how to volunteer are on our website, if you feel that you would like to help, please go to www.worldinneed.org.uk or contact the team on 01892 669834.

FOREST ROW:
HUGO’S MEMORIAL we are now facing a big financial challenge to get this extension built.
In 2019, following the presumed drowning of our nephew, we decided to try and get Forest Row Skate Park extended in his memory. Hugo Palmer (20) and his best friend (both Forest Row locals) were on a backpacking trip in Australia when they disappeared from the beach. Nearly 2 years down the line, we have good news and bad about the progress of Hugo’s memorial. To start with the good news - we officially have planning permission! It's been a long and expensive journey to get there, but we finally have it. Unfortunately, though,
The original skate park building firm who quoted £30K (which we managed to raise) are no longer able to be involved. This has been a huge blow at the 11th hour, to put it lightly. The company who we are now speaking to have crunched the numbers, and are saying that in order to build the design we have, it'll be more like £50K. Which leaves us £20K short. And trying to set about raising a sum of money like that during a global pandemic/recession, is no mean feat. We are exploring potential grants (lottery, etc.), but have already had a couple of applications declined as certain grants are now being allocated to Covid-related efforts.
The company we are speaking to have said that they could build a pretty small extension for the £30K that we have, but it would be disappointing (for everyone concerned) for it not to be the very best extension that it can be. The more expensive quote includes full repairs and resurfacing of the existing park, which would mean a clean, fresh slate and an exciting new space to enjoy. It's a tough one. We are down, but not defeated. We’re determined to build Hugo's memorial, but also to extend and expand this wonderful amenity in our village, that will benefit so many people for generations to come. Sowing the
Seed
Now’s the time to grow your own chillies, tomatoes, potatoes and broad beans. Or create crackin’ cress heads! The popularity of ‘Grow Your Own’ continues to rise, with 38% of British adults saying that they use their garden or outdoor space such as a balcony or window box to grow their own herbs, fruit and vegetables. Growing your own fruit and vegetables from seed is sometimes made to sound harder than it is. But all you really need to do is to pop a
Chillies and tomatoes Chillies and tomatoes can be started off indoors from March through to mid spring. Plants will be ready to go outside in a sheltered, sunny spot from May or after the last frost.
Potatoes Potatoes are a family favourite and are very easy to grow. Buy seed potatoes, which are small potato tubers that are certified disease free (don’t be tempted to use old potatoes from the vegetable rack) and start chitting them in March. Chitting involves letting the potatoes grow shoots by placing them in trays or egg cartons and standing them in a cool, light spot until 1-2cm long shoots have formed. Work organic matter and a general fertiliser into the soil of an open sunny site.
few seeds into some seed trays or pots filled with compost, place indoors in a propagator, or in a greenhouse if you have one, water well and watch your plants grow. In no time they will be ready to be planted out (usually after the last frost). Now is a good time to plan what you are going to grow and choose your seeds.
Potatoes do not like frost so don’t rush to plant out too soon. Water regularly and you should be able to harvest after 10-12 weeks.
Broad Beans & Runner Beans Broad beans and runner beans can be sown indoors or straight in the ground outside as the soil warms up. They are easy to grow and you’ll be able to enjoy delicious freshly picked veg this summer.

Walk from Standen to Kingscote Bluebell Railway A country walk for more experienced walkers. Please note normal admission applies to enter the property and car park. Time 3 hours • Distance 6 miles (9.6 km) • Map Explorer 135 • Dog friendly Standen car park, grid ref: TQ391356 1. Leave the car park and walk up the hill towards the house. At the top turn left and walk along the path with the Kitchen Garden on your left and Goose Green on the right. Continue ahead on the mettled and grass path through the rhododendrons, and woodland until you reach a second wooden gate (do not turn into Hollybush Wood) into a field. 2. Go through the gate and bear left to follow the path along the edge of a small wood, with a barbed wire fence to your left. Ignore the first stile and continue downhill. Go through the metal gate at the edge of the wood, turn left and follow the path downhill towards the reservoir. Go over a stile. At the next finger post turn right to follow the High Weald Landscape Trail. Continue along the right-hand edge of the field to a metal gate in the bottom corner. (Note the position of this gate. On your return, this
is where you will turn left to head back up the hill towards Standen.) 3. Here the High Weald Landscape Trail joins the Sussex Border Path. Go through a gate and turn right and continue along this path, with the reservoir and chain-link fence on your left until you meet a tarred lane. 4. This is the old road which was submerged by the water, and blocked by a padlocked double iron gate. Turn right at this gate uphill for a few hundred yards, as it turns left and levels off. Turn right at the junction with the road
(Please take care here as visibility is poor). 5. Walk 50 yards uphill to the finger post opposite the entrance to Stone Hill House, cross the road. Follow the path above the rocks, which soon develops into a sunken path as it goes downhill, and continue until you reach a three-way finger post and a metal gate at the top of the hill. 6. Go through the gate, and head downhill across the field in the direction of the pylon. Go through a gap in the trees at the bottom, and follow the stream to a wooden foot bridge.

2 4 WALK FROM STANDEN TO KINGSCOTE BLUEBELL RAILWAY CONTINUED Cross the bridge and turn left in front of a pylon to follow a track to a finger post at the entrance of a wood. You are still following the High Weald Landscape Trail. Follow the path through the woods, cross the stile and climb a steep bank to cross the Bluebell railway line. Go down the steep bank on the other side and cross a waymarked stile into a wood. 7. Follow the path through the wood to emerge onto a tarred lane. Turn right (ignoring the path to the right) for about 500yd (450m) to a large wooden gate and stile. Mill Place The name Mill Place was first noted in 1547. It was part of Lewes Priory’s manor of Imberhorne from the early 12th century but later became independent of it. A water powered iron furnace was working here in the 16th and 17th centuries. The core of the building dates from the late 14th century, with 16th century and Victorian additions. It is grade II listed. 8. Go through the gate or over the stile and continue straight ahead along the lane. Just past Brookbank and Holly Tree Cottages on the right. The lane swings around to the left and you can see the railway line again. Where the lane joins from the left continue straight ahead. The lane goes under the overhead lines, between hedgerows and through a wood. The wood on your right opens out onto a large field, with two large white houses in the bottom right-hand corner. Continue for about 100yd (90m) downhill and look for a gap in the righthand hedge with a finger post. Go through the gap and follow around the edge of the field towards the houses, keeping the woodland on your left. 9. At the end of the field turn left onto a track and follow uphill, through a metal gate onto Vowels Lane. Kingscote Station, part of the Bluebell railway line, is immediately to your right. 10. After visiting Kingscote Station, retrace your steps. Go left down the private road. just before the large white house (Bluebell Cottage) go right along the right-hand
field edge. At the lane, turn left. Where the path forks, go straight ahead (signs to Mill Place Farm) passed Brooksbank cottage and Holly Tree cottage on your left. Before the gate turn left down the lane to Mill Place Farm. 11. Go under the railway bridge and continue ahead along the track through the farm buildings and past a pond on your left. Continue until you reach a brick bridge. Go over the bridge and follow the track around to your right past another pond on your left. Keep ahead following the fence and hedge on your left and a stream on your right. Continue up the sunken track around the left-hand edge of the field, following the line of finger posts, to the top of the field. Continue past the rocks on the right and retrace your steps to the road. Take care here. Turn right and go downhill to rejoin the lane on the left which takes you back to the Sussex Border Path along the northern perimeter of Weir Wood reservoir. Follow the border path past two memorial benches until you reach the metal gate in the corner of the field where you joined the path originally. Cross the stile and head up the hill following the High Weald Landscape Trail, under the power lines, keeping the hedgerow and fence to your right. Go through the metal gate at the top of the field through the bracken, continuing to keep the fence and hedgerow on your right. At the fingerpost, continue uphill and follow the sunken path along the edge of the wood. After emerging from the wood, there is a gate on your right you can use this to retrace your path to Standen, Goose Green and the house, or continue up the hill, following the right-hand edge of the field, to the top corner. 12. Go through the metal gate at the top of the field, and follow the path right between the woodland and barbed-wire fence (on your left) until you reach the main drive to Standen. At the drive turn right, past Standen cottages and continue to the main entrance to Standen and the car park. With courtesy of The National Trust ©

Spoon into the muffin cases and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until firm and golden. Cool on a wire rack.

Clinton Lodge Fletching, East Sussex
Ightham Mote Ivy Hatch, Sevenoaks Lovely 14-acre garden surrounding a picturesque medieval moated manor house c1320, open for NGS since 1927. Herbaceous borders, lawns, 18th century cascade, fountain pools, courtyards and a cutting garden provide formal interest; while the informal north lake, stream, pleasure grounds, fernery and orchard contribute to the sense of charm and tranquillity. Nestled in a hidden valley, Ightham Mote, is at the centre of a sequence of water features of medieval origin. The intimate scale, through mist or with the sun glittering on the moat, creates a fairy-tale picture of England past and present, for all to enjoy and relax in. Open twice for NGS: daffodils in spring and late summer/early autumn colour. The landscape has provided the backdrop, food and raw materials for life at Ightham Mote. A visit to estate reveals how 700 years of history have left their mark, reflecting changes in the status of the owners, fashion,
6 acre formal and romantic garden overlooking parkland. The Caroline house (not open) was enlarged by the Earl of Sheffield for his daughter, who married Sir Henry Clinton, one of the three generals at Waterloo. The 18th Century façade is set in a tree-lined lawn, flanked by a water canal of pools and fountains and overlooking parkland. The 1987 storm removed old oaks but these have been replanted in a Repton-style landscape leading to a stone column on the distant hill. The garden itself is approximately 6 acres of clay soil and is divided into rooms reflecting English garden design from the 17th century to 21st century. The 17th century herb garden has

3 0 NGS OPEN GARDENS CONTINUED camomile paths and turf seats, and four knot gardens. The Victorian era is represented by tall white and blue herbaceous borders, the pre-Raphaelites by an alley of white roses, clematis, purple vines and lilies, the 20th century by an unusual swimming pool garden encircled by an arcade of apples and the 21st century by a garden of clipped beech with a newly built classical stone folly. A wild flower meadow has been replanted with standard apple trees and a pleached lime avenue leads to the medieval herb garden and potager. An enclosed garden of old English roses, trained high so that you are enveloped by the scent, surrounds a water feature by William Pye.
