NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM

Coming soon

22 November 2013 – 21 April 2014 Special Exhibitions Gallery | Sammy Ofer Wing Open late on Thursdays until 20.00 with gallery tours and live music

J. M. W. Turner is one of Britain’s best-loved artists, and this is the first major exhibition of masterpieces showcasing his lifelong fascination with the sea, in the resplendent setting of Maritime Greenwich. With his use of dramatic effects and increasingly experimental style, Turner was an important and often controversial figure who dominated British Romantic art in the first half of the nineteenth century.

In this new exploration of his work, the National Maritime Museum brings together outstanding paintings and drawings from across the world. Including ‘The Fighting Temeraire’, voted Britain’s favourite painting, ‘Wreck of a Transport Ship’, and ‘Rockets and Blue Lights’ not seen in the UK for ten years, the exhibition examines Turner’s evocative scenes alongside masterpieces by other great artists including van de Velde, Vernet, Constable and Gainsborough. Through these iconic works, Turner and the Sea explores the compelling appeal of the seascape for artists, and how Turner’s treatment of storm, shipwreck and battle challenged his contemporaries and revolutionized maritime art. Trafalgar Day: Monday 21 October

A major new permanent gallery opens at the NMM on Trafalgar Day, 21 October From bustling dockyards to ferocious sea battles, ‘Nelson, Navy, Nation’ brings the tumultuous 18th century to life, exploring how the Royal Navy affected lives afloat and ashore, and turned sea-faring heroes into national celebrities. Explore life in the Navy through fascinating objects from love tokens sent to sweethearts at home to the grisly instruments of naval surgery; and get to know the legendary Admiral Lord Nelson through his personal possessions, including the iconic uniform in which he received his fatal wound, alongside weird and wonderful Nelson memorabilia. From sailors to admirals, land-lubbers to seadogs, ordinary life to the heat of battle, follow the story of the sailing Navy and how it loomed large in the popular imagination, shaping how British people saw themselves and their place in the world. rmg.co.uk/nelsonnavynation

THE QUEEN’S HOUSE Contemporary Arts Programme Yinka Shonibare MBE at Greenwich 18 September 2013 – 23 February 2014

This beautiful royal villa, completed around 1638 for Charles I’s queen, Henrietta Maria, features the National Maritime Museum’s world-class collection of paintings. Designed as England’s first truly classical building, Inigo Jones’s Palladian masterpiece features the elegant Tulip Stairs and the awe-inspiring Great Hall, a perfect 40-foot cube.

The Royal Museums Greenwich contemporary arts programme continues this autumn with a series of recent works by one of Britain’s leading artists. Following the acquisition of ‘Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle’ in 2012, we have invited Yinka Shonibare MBE to infiltrate the Museum’s historic collections. Among the artist’s works on show are two life-size figures inspired by the life and loves of Lord Nelson (displayed in the UK for the first time), a new work conceived specially for the Royal Observatory Greenwich, and a gravity-defying outdoor sculpture for the Queen’s House lawns. rmg.co.uk/yinka Right: Wind Sculpture, 2013 © Yinka Shonibare MBE, courtesy Stephen Friedman Gallery, commissioned by Yorkshire Sculpture Park

The Queen’s House Art Gallery displays include works by artists such as Gainsborough, Reynolds, Hogarth, Turner and the van de Veldes, portraying the history of our maritime past. Discover the beauty of this collection, the role the Queen’s House played in the development of Maritime Greenwich, and the history of its royal occupants. Find out more at rmg.co.uk/queens-house

Big Ticket Cutty Sark is the world’s sole-surviving tea clipper, the speed machine of her time and a living reminder of the great days of sail. Up on the weather deck venture beneath the towering masts, carrying over 11 miles of rigging, and explore the crew’s cabins. Down in the dock you can roam directly underneath the ship and see the elegant lines of the innovative streamlined hull. Cutty Sark has captured the imagination of millions.
