The Queen’s House

Running until April 2014, our groundbreaking show Turner and the Sea explores the artist’s fascination with that subject: it’s the first time this central, maritime focus in Turner’s art has ever been addressed through a major exhibition. A truly spectacular event (with a fine catalogue), there is an accompanying programme of talks, concerts, and art courses linked to the exhibition, diving deeper into these maritime masterpieces and the influences underlying them. I also strongly recommend you visit our new ‘Nelson, Navy, Nation’ gallery, where much of the subject-matter for Turner’s works is explained within a more detailed maritime context. Meanwhile, at Cutty Sark, we are very excited to announce the opening in February of the new Studio Theatre, a cosy performing-arts space hosting an impressive of world-class D F line-up A M comedians and authoritative speakers such as Sir AA 5+ 0-5Robin 6+ Knox-Johnston. 7+ 11+ 12+ 8+

Explore Turner’s pioneering and often controversial approach in capturing the beauty and power of seascapes, alongside iconic works by other great artists including van de Velde, Vernet, Constable and Gainsborough. Take in his experimental style in depicting the sea’s many moods and dramas with extraordinary effects of light and colour, conveying atmosphere and feeling as much as physical form. See Turner as you’ve never seen him before, at the heart of Maritime Greenwich. Find out more at rmg.co.uk/turner #SeaTurner

The Royal Museums Greenwich contemporary arts programme continues with a series of recent works by one of Britain’s leading artists. Following the acquisition of ‘Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle’ in 2012, we have invited Yinka Shonibare MBE to infiltrate the Museum’s historic collections. Among the artist’s works on show are two life-size figures inspired by the life and loves of Lord Nelson (displayed in the UK for the first time), a new work conceived specially for the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, and a gravity-defying outdoor sculpture for the Queen’s House lawns. rmg.co.uk/yinka D F A AA

Initially built for the China tea trade and launched in 1869, Cutty Sark’s original wooden planks and iron frames that crossed the China Seas have been meticulously conserved. On board there are interactive displays to conjure up the sights, sounds and smells of life at sea and tell the ship’s rich and tumultuous history. Our ticket prices now include a voluntary donation that will help RMG raise money for capital projects including new displays, acquisitions and conservation. Visitors can choose to pay a Gift Aid ticket price including a 10% donation, or the standard ticket price. If you are a UK taxpayer and choose the Gift Aid ticket price, the Gift Aid scheme enables RMG to claim tax back from the government of 25p for every £1 of the whole amount paid — vital support for our work.
