THE QUEEN’S HOUSE
Contemporary Arts Programme Rozanne Hawksley: War and Memory
War Artists at Sea Showcasing the best of the Museum’s collection of First and Second World War art, War Artists at Sea includes visually arresting depictions of events at home and at the front, scenes of everyday life and moving portraits. Artists were charged with recording these unprecedented conflicts for posterity, in the belief that art could awaken emotional responses that other forms of recording could not. This beautiful royal villa, completed around 1638 for Charles I’s queen, Henrietta Maria, features the National Maritime Museum’s world-class collection of paintings. Designed as England’s first truly classical building, Inigo Jones’s Palladian masterpiece features the elegant Tulip Stairs and the awe-inspiring Great Hall, a perfect 40-foot cube. The Queen’s House Art Gallery displays include works by artists such as Gainsborough, Reynolds, Hogarth, Turner and the van de Veldes, portraying the history of our maritime past. Discover the beauty of this collection, the role the Queen’s House played in the development of Maritime Greenwich, and the history of its royal occupants. Find out more at rmg.co.uk/queens-house

War and Memory is mounted to commemorate the centenary of the beginning of the First World War. It examines remembrance, representation and memory in the fitting setting of the Queen’s House, which was once a school educating boys for joining the Navy. The installation features new work alongside pieces from throughout Hawksley’s acclaimed career, including ‘Seamstress and the Sea’, inspired by the artist’s grandmother who sewed sailors’ collars for a living during and between both World Wars; also ‘Prisoner’, a sculpture created as a response to the work of the photographer Don McCullin, plus works from the ‘Memorials’ series. Cutty Sark is the world’s sole-surviving tea clipper, famous for her record-breaking passages around the globe. Come aboard and immerse yourself in the experience of life at sea over a century ago: delve into the stories of the crew and learn about the ship’s rich and tumultuous history. Climb from deck to deck, explore the tea chests in the lower hold and marvel at the raking masts and miles of rigging from the upper deck.
The ship has been lifted by over three metres, revealing the sleek lines and beautiful streamlined shape which made Cutty Sark the fastest and greatest clipper of her time.
