Thursday 25 July | 18.30 – 19.30 NMM Seminar Room
Written by famous science-fiction author Ray Bradbury, and starring Richard Carlson and Barbara Rush, this was the first film from Universal Studios shot in 3D. The story of peaceful aliens crash-landing on Earth and desperately trying to repair their spaceship before they are discovered by humans is both a cult sciencefiction tale and an interesting commentary on the cold-war paranoia of the time. Following the film a short talk will explore the idea of aliens’ attitudes to humans, and the question of what really is lurking ‘out there’. AA

Royal Observatory events Sci-Fi Movie Screenings Join us for monthly screenings of classic early science fiction films, followed by open discussions with one of our astronomers about the themes of the films and the science behind the fiction.
July screening: It Came from Outer Space
August screening: This Island Earth

(Joseph M. Newman, 1955) Thursday 15 August 18.45 – 20.45 | £7, Members £5 Peter Harrison Planetarium
Written by famous science-fiction author Ray Bradbury, and starring Richard Carlson and Barbara Rush, this was the first film from Universal Studios shot in 3D. The story of peaceful aliens crashlanding on earth and desperately trying to repair their spaceship before they are discovered by humans is both a cult science-fiction tale and an interesting commentary on the cold-war paranoia of the time. Following the film a short talk will explore the idea of aliens’ attitudes to humans, and the question of what really is lurking ‘out there’. D F A
Starring Jeff Morrow and Faith Domergue, this Technicolor sci-fi bonanza portrays the abduction of Earth’s brightest minds by aliens to assist in an interplanetary war. Classic space opera, featuring space battles, bug-eyed monsters and glaring scientific errors, but also a warning against the expanding use of atomic energy in the 1950s and the misuse of resources. Following the screening, join us for a short talk about the film’s depiction of alien technology and how this reflects society’s changing views of technological advances. M D F A
