Introduction with a new gallery ‘Forgotten Fighters’, research days, tours, and poignant displays in the Queen’s House of War Artists at Sea and contemporary installations by Rozanne Hawksley. Finally we round off the summer in September with a truly spectacular maritime celebration, the Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Festival, London’s largest tall-ships event in 25 years. Join us between 5 – 9 September for performances, workshops and tours, and special events on board Cutty Sark.

Summer 2014 is an exciting one for Royal Museums Greenwich, as we mark the 300th anniversary of the passing of the Longitude Act in July 1714 with a landmark season of exhibitions, art displays, events, planetarium shows and film screenings. The centrepiece of the season is our major exhibition at the National Maritime Museum: Ships, Clocks and Stars: the Quest for Longitude — an exciting exploration of the world’s then biggest scientific challenge, dramatically recounting the inspired inventions and personal rivalries involved. AA D a quirkier F A angle to the story, M Bringing the Royal Observatory has7+been11+transformed AA 5+ 0-5 6+ 12+ 8+ 15+ by Steampunk artists in Longitude Punk’d; AA while the Queen’s House mounts an D exceptional exhibition of art inspired by D D F James Cook’s voyages, including the Stubbs AA 5+ masterpieces saved for the nation through AA 5+ AA 5+ 0-5 our acquisition campaign last year.

Don’t miss a brilliant variety of summer events bringing longitude to life — from AA conferences, tours, and intriguing ‘Late’ events, to a Steampunk summer fete, and Steampunk Tea Museum at the Cutty Sark. 2014 is of course another anniversary, the centenary of the beginning of the First World War, which we are commemorating

Longitude Season at the National Maritime Museum

National Maritime Museum | 11 July 2014 – 4 January 2015 Discover how the critical problem of finding where you were at sea preoccupied the greatest minds of the 17th and 18th centuries; explore the ideas that went into solving the world’s biggest challenge, the rewards and prestige at stake, and how the science involved still affects our lives today. Not being able to pinpoint where you were at sea posed a huge problem to sailors, traders and navigators for centuries, prolonging voyages, wrecking ships and costing lives. The Longitude Act, passed in July 1714, set the scene for a race of enormous importance, with the top scientific minds of the age pitted against each other to solve the ‘unsolvable’, developing scientific ideas that still influence technology today. Delve through this landmark exhibition into a dramatic story of invention and intrigue, which captured the imaginations and talents of astronomers, skilled artisans, politicians, seamen and satirists.

This War and Memory exhibition, mounted to commemorate the centenary of the beginning of the First World War, examines representation and remembrance in the fitting setting of the Queen’s House, which was once a school educating boys for joining the Navy. The installation features new work alongside pieces from throughout Hawksley’s acclaimed career, including ‘Seamstress and the Sea’, inspired by the artist’s grandmother who sewed sailors’ collars for a living during D F A M and between both World Wars; also ‘Prisoner’, a 12+ 8+ AA a sculpture 5+ 0-5 created 6+ 7+ as11+ response to the work of the photographer Don McCullin, plus works from the ‘Memorials’ series. Meet the ship’s most daring captain, the man who built Cutty Sark, and the ship’s figurehead Nannie, brought to life to tell you their incredible stories of life at sea. Bring the whole family to our ‘Tiny Tall Ships’ workshop and make your own mini-ship underneath Cutty Sark’s spectacular hull (see pages 19 – 20). Watch a team of riggers furling sails aloft and catch shanty singers by twilight up on deck. Later opening hours across the Festival — check rmg.co.uk for details.
