The first Serbian doctors were empiricists who were taught medical skills as a craft with the other doctors, and worked mostly in monastery hospitals. Monastery hospital in Serbian medieval state were established in all modeled on the Byzantine hospitals. As in Byzantium, there were two types of hospitals: in the framework of the monastery complex, for the treatment of sick monks suffering from common diseases and outside the monastery walls, to accept patients suffering from infectious diseases
