“Necessity is the mother of invention. A need or problem encourages creative effort to meet the need or solve the problem.” ~ Plato “At seventeen, I enlisted in the Marine Corps. At Camp Lejeune, I drank water contaminated with carcinogenic substances which gave me cancer. The Chemotherapy destroyed the cartilage in my cervical spine. The pain became so intense, I felt I would not be able to work much longer as a Physical Therapist.

Only $14.95

Hence, the creation of Chazael Lotion.” Kevin Sgroi, PT Creator of Chazael Lotion

“Chazael lotion is amazing! After being shot six times on March 6, 2016, nothing helped alleviate the severe swelling in my feet until my physical therapist gave me this lotion. He said it works equally well in relieving the symptoms of arthritis, muscle spasms, and increasing flexibility in joints plagued by arthritis. Please try this product!”

Pastor Tim, Coeur d’Alene Photo courtesy of Nspire magazine

“When someone would say ‘make a fist’ I could only chuckle and give them my flat hand with fingers slightly curved. One day, I was very blessed to be treated with Chazael Lotion! Now I can make a complete fist with my right hand and almost a complete one with my left. The greatest benefit of this lotion is being PAIN FREE!”

Kathleen P., Hayden “Chazael, the essential oil based serum used by Kevin in his physical therapy treatments, is nothing short of a miracle. It provides incredible relief to my swollen tissues, aching muscles and arthritic joints. To see the rest of my testimonial, go to Chazael-Lotion.com.”

Now you can end Sleep Apnea , Restless Legs and Leg Cramps and get a good Night’s sleep – night after night. Hi, I’m Steve Frank and I suffered from sleep apnea for years, so I know exactly what you’re going through. I even tried the CPAP machine but I could not sleep with anything strapped to my face. It was a serious problem and I was determined to find an answer. As an herbalist, I diligently pursued a group of herbs that would correct this problem and thank goodness, my persistence paid off! My patent-pending formulation has helped thousands and I use it every night. Now you can try it too! My Mom asked me what to do about persistent leg cramps. She had tried all the suggested supplements but still had problems. I put together a group of herbs to relax nerves, reduce tension and increase circulation. It worked great for her! Later, I found that it works for Restless Legs as well. Now you can use it too.

You owe it to yourself & your spouse to try these great products!

“A woman in harmony with her spirit is like a river flowing. She goes where she will without pretense and arrives at her destination prepared to be herself and only herself.” ~ Maya Angelou y goal is to flow. To navigate and roll with life and its lazy Class I to extreme Class VI rapids. Easier said than done, of course. There are times when everything feels connected and opportunities arrive and synchronicities happen, and I think, “Oh yeah, I got this thing locked in!” Only to then be flowing along and: DAM. No seriously—I hit a dam. Fear, insecurities and uncomfortable emotions bubble up threatening to block my progress and drown me. Deep breaths. Quiet the mind. Listen. And know that all is well and the flow must go on. Until it ends. Show up. I recently attended the celebration of life for an extended family member and learned that his magical power was ‘showing up.’ Supporting those he loved and being there when it mattered most. What a beautiful gift to be remembered for. I am sad to report that Jason, my sweet friend from New Zealand, passed away in April. I wrote about Jase in the February issue when he shared with me his struggle during those final months. His words hurt my heart, but his vulnerability, courage and resilience strengthened it. He was a gift to me, and I will miss him dearly. Since my mom’s death almost two years ago now, I’ve come to realize the amazing, transformative and powerful teacher that death is. A teacher whose class you would never voluntarily enroll in, but one that transforms you in ways you could never anticipate. All part of the flow. Now let’s flow right into this month’s issue! May is dedicated to women’s health and is chock-full of fabulous local content from area naturopaths, chiropractors, acupuncturists and more. I’m super excited that my own naturopath of 14 years, Dr. Alycia Policani, writes about the important role of thermography in the early detection of breast disease. We also have an informative Q&A with Dr. Pamela Langenderfer on bioidentical hormones during menopause. Dr. Toby Hallowitz details the power of chasteberry and curcumin for PMS symptoms and Dr. Chad Johnson explains the vital importance of the pelvis in pregnancy. But wait, there’s more. Our local spotlight features an inspiring little boy named Tristan who has Pulmonary Hypertension (PH), an extremely rare disease with very few treatment options. Tristan wants us to know May 5 is PH Awareness Day, and there are ways we can help find a cure. Additional spotlights this month feature the awesome Prairie Dog Pet Mercantile and their expanded South Hill store, as well as the Downtown Grocery Outlet. And finally, it’s Farmers’ Market season! We have a listing of all the area markets by day on page 25, and if I’ve forgotten any, let me know.

Healing with Horses Sanctuary Offers Two Workshops in June

H

ealing with Horses Sanctuary, located just outside of Spokane, is offering two programs during the month of June. The first, Heart Connections, will be held June 1 to 3, and Exploring Spirituality through the Eye of the Horse from June 8 to 10. “Our Heart Connections program, beginning on June 1st, focuses on the reflective nature of horses and connecting with their huge hearts. This Healing with Horses heart connection empowers participants to experience a deeper clarity within themselves as they move in harmony with the rhythm of the horse,” says Gloria Lybecker, instructor and specialist at the sanctuary. “This program is ideal for those ready to open their hearts to a new way of being in relationship, and to learn the nuances of nonverbal communication.” The second program, Exploring Spirituality through the Eye of the Horse, focuses on connecting with spirit and divine consciousness. “The intention for this retreat is to remove the barriers between who you actually are, and who you were conditioned to be,” Lybecker emphasizes. “It’s ideal for those with a passion for horses, nature, and spirituality who are striving to live life as a fully empowered being.” Limited spaces available in both workshops. The pair founded Beyond Pink to celebrate the technology of thermography and its powerful ability to aid in the early detection of breast disease. Their goal was to not only educate and raise awareness, but to help provide funding for women who could not otherwise afford this potentially life-saving screening as it is generally not covered by insurance. Downtown Spokane Grocery Outlet New Owners, New Products, Same Value by Sheila Julson

J

ack and Sage Dunaway, owners of Downtown Spokane Grocery Outlet, both have a long history with the supermarket franchise. Jack, a native of Spokane, started working in his dad’s Grocery Outlet in Lebanon, Oregon. Sage grew up in the foothills of Northern California and worked at her local Grocery Outlet in Jackson, Jack and Sage Dunaway California. After a few years, both Jack and Sage advanced to the Grocery Outlet Corporate Set Team, which is where they met. During their tenure, they helped open and remodel Grocery Outlets all across the West Coast, and they helped open the Airway Heights location. The couple wed this past September, and they’re starting their married life together as the new owners of the Downtown Spokane Grocery Outlet, which they purchased January 26. The Dunaways are pleased with their decision to own a business that allows them to tailor to the needs of the community. “Unlike traditional retailers, we can order what products are available to fit the requests of customers,” Jack says. “We also have more ability to be hands-on with our customers and our community.” Jack’s family is also helping him continue the Grocery Outlet business history that runs in the family. His mother is the store manager of Downtown Spokane Grocery Outlet, and his younger brother works in departments throughout the store. As new owners of the Downtown location, the Dunaways will keep all of the favorite aspects that Grocery Outlet stores are known for, such as competitive prices, and every day they will bring in new and fresh products. “One of our big focuses is bringing in more natural, organic, specialty and healthy (N.O.S.H.) items,” Sage enthuses. “We have reset the store to give room for more products in every department, and we’re filling up the shelves. We are also very excited to participate in more community events to help build up the Downtown community.” Downtown Spokane Grocery Outlet is located at 1617 W. 3rd Ave., Spokane. Amy Barker and Daniel Pringle hiking with their dogs

PRAIRIE DOG PET MERCANTILE Focuses on Holistic Pet Health, Education by Sheila Julson

C

ertified professional dog trainer (CPDT-KA) Amy Barker knows that when opportunity knocks, it’s important to answer. Barker had been working at Prairie Dog Pet Mercantile when the store’s founders, Don and Cyndi Cutler, wanted to sell the business. Barker decided to go for it, and she, along with her husband Daniel Pringle, bought the business in 2013. Barker and Pringle—today the enthusiastic pet parents of three dogs and two cats—have steadily grown Prairie Dog, moving the store from its original Palouse Highway location to a new space on Regal Street, where they are currently expanding. They also opened a second location in Kendall Yards in August 2017. The South Hill store expansion will provide Barker with 1,700 additional square feet to offer training classes and seminars. She is already partnering with local dog training experts Diamonds in the Ruff to bring classes to Prairie Dog. They hope to eventually host seminars led by pet nutrition experts and holistic and local veterinarians on topics such as quality foods, behavior issues, and separation anxiety. Barker’s biggest involvement with the dog community remains as an instructor at Diamonds in the Ruff, where she teaches classes like Tails & Trails, in which people learn to hike responsibly with their dogs. She sees a direct link between an animal’s behavior and the quality of food, toys and products the owners provide. Prairie Dog specializes in products for dogs and cats with a focus on natural and holistic kibble, dehydrated and raw foods. “We’re picky about what we carry, and I’ll research something a lot before we bring it in,” Barker says. “We don’t carry foods that have

animal byproducts, wheat, corn or soy. The foods we sell the most are ones that use human grade ingredients. Good dog food comes from good people food.” Customers can also find high quality supplements, collars, leashes and beds. Barker emphasizes that the staff at Prairie Dog give personalized guidance to each customer as they select healthy food, grooming and dental care products, or the perfect chew or toy that will make their pets thrive, all with a goal of helping companion animals achieve longevity. Prairie Dog Pet Mercantile also regularly makes in-kind donations to animal welfare organizations including Mercy’s Mission, SCRAPS and Meals on Wheels. Barker is glad she made the decision five years ago to take advantage of an opportunity to become an entrepreneur in a type of business she adores. “I love our customers, and we’re excited to grow,” she enthuses. “I’m passionate about educating our community, and that’s what we do here. If I can make it so people’s dogs are on this planet a little bit longer, then I’m doing my job.” Prairie Dog Pet Mercantile is located at 5608 S. Regal, Ste. 100, Spokane, and 1206 Summit Parkway, Spokane. For more information, call 509-443-9663 or 509-279-2399 or visit PDogPet.com. See ad, back cover. May 5 is World Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Day

Why is awareness important?

by Ebru Ozgen Oglesbay

How do you advocate for PH?

P

ulmonary Hypertension (PH) means high blood pressure in the lungs. According to PHaware.com, it is a “rare, complex and chronic lung disease, which currently has no cure. PH makes it difficult for a patient to receive adequate oxygen, forces the heart to work harder, and can result in heart failure.” Symptoms, which include shortness of breath, dizziness and fatigue, are often confused with asthma or COPD due to the similarity of symptoms. Currently, there is no cure for PH, although treatment options are available. Tristan is a 9-year-old PH patient who was diagnosed a few weeks after his seventh birthday. He is also my son. He is fun, smart and full of life. We live in Dalton Gardens and Tristan is currently homeschooled and also a part-time student at the Cornerstone Christian Academy in Post Falls. He loves reading, Minecraft, Pokemon, planes and flying and science. He is also a great advocate for PH awareness as he doesn’t allow PH to define who he is or what his life can be. Tristan knew that something was wrong with him because he often felt short of breath and tired all the time. One day, he told me he was going to pass out and that he needed me to carry him. My husband and I took him to Sacred Heart that day. I interviewed Tristan to help create awareness about Pulmonary Hypertension, and to show that even with a PH diagnosis, you can live a healthy, ordinary life, as my son demonstrates on a daily basis.

What kind of treatments are you on? 12

Inland Northwest

Tristan Oglesbay I take four oral medications every day. I am lucky that I don’t have to use intravenous or subcutaneous medicines. I also use oxygen at nights or when my oxygen saturation is low.

How does PH affect your life?

I can’t walk or ride my bike for too long because I get short of breath. I had to quit school for two years; this year I started going part-time. But during the flu season, I am staying home. We travel to Seattle often for PH appointments. But I love flying, so that’s great! I have to have blood draws, x-rays, hospital stays, and lots of doctor’s appointments. I get a Bead of Courage for each of these, so that’s cool, too. Other than that, my life is the same. I love to play Minecraft and Pokemon and do science experiments because I love science. I also love cooking, playing with my friends, and spending time with my pets and chickens. I have a Facebook page called This Kid Says (@thiskidsays) where I write reviews about restaurants, churches and other places and tell people if these places are good and kid-friendly. I also have a YouTube channel where I post videos about everything in life. I change its name often. Now it is Mallow Marsh. The name is from Pokemon.

inwAwakenings.com

There is no cure for PH but one day they will find one. We need research for that and research means money. If more people know about PH, more people will donate money to PHA (Pulmonary Hypertension Association) for research.

I sell PH awareness bracelets. One of my friends made PH jewelry and key chains; we also made inspirational rocks. I sell those, too. I sold them at the Health Fair in March. My mom and I color our lips blue on May 5th for the World PH Awareness Day and we ask our friends to do the same on that day. Then we put our photos on Facebook and Instagram with hashtags like #PH, #PHAware, #BlueLipsChallenge, and #periwinkleday.

Do you have any advice for newly diagnosed patients?

Don’t be afraid. It’s just a lung disease. Take your medicines and enjoy life until they find a cure.

Have you met other patients with PH?

Yes. I went to a PH Conference in Texas with my mom and dad in 2016. There were many kids and adults with PH. I also met Chloe Temtchine. She is a singer who has PH, too.

Anything else you would like to add?

Yes. We need a cure for PH. Please donate to PH Association so they can have money for research to find a cure. Ebru Ozgen Oglesbay and her son Tristan are passionate about educating people about PH and raising funds to find a cure for this rare disease. There are currently 14 treatment options for PH for adults, and only one of these is approved for children. Five Benefits of Journaling Whether written in a college-ruled notebook or in a beautiful leatherbound journal, writing out feelings, daydreams or ideas help to give a home on paper to something which is not otherwise tangible. Journaling ideas and thoughts also helps to give an outlet for various emotions. Whether you journal for relaxation, to get organized, for better introspection and concentration, or to hone your communication skills, the benefits of journaling are numerous. Relaxation: People who feel angry often feel better after exercising or taking a break and counting to 10 to “cool off.” These are healthy outlets. The same is true for journaling as pen and paper or keyboard and screen give an outlet to emotion. Next time you’re feeling angry or overwhelmed, write it out and you will likely feel a whole lot better. Organization: Being able to see written thoughts and ideas will often help you to sort out tangential thoughts. This is the reasoning behind “brain storming” before writing a term paper. So, get organized and write it out. Introspection: Logging blood pressure numbers, blood sugar numbers, and how often you have a headache helps you to introspect on your physical health. You can then use this information to make lifestyle adjustments. Journaling about food or health aspects creates some accountability for you to reflect on your personal human experience. So, go learn about you and write it out. Concentration: Channeling ideas and emotions to paper often helps us to see the importance and utility for staying in the moment. So much of life is chaotic and “busy.” Good work happens when we’re able to be fully immersed in the present moment. Distraction is the enemy of many good works that could have been great if not left unfinished. Channel, focus, be there with pen and paper or keyboard and screen and really take to writing it out. You might just be smarter for it. Communication: We have all heard the phrase “practice makes perfect.” This is the concept behind the written speech which is practiced again and again before the presentation. This can be true for normal conversation as well. If you are struggling or wrestling with a certain topic with another person, then write out those bothersome feelings. Hopefully you will be able to then tame those feelings in a constructive way for a much more appropriate and succinct form of expression. You may even be able to tap into a much calmer and centered demeanor for this previously dreaded encounter. Take the time to write it out and reap the benefits of the emotional growth. Young Women Outdo Male Peers in Oxygen Uptake Young women process oxygen about 30 percent faster and more efficiently than men when they begin exercising, according to a new study from Canada’s University of Waterloo. The ability to extract oxygen from the blood is an important fitness marker, which the researchers tested by having 18 young men and women exercise on treadmills. The women’s superior results indicate they are naturally less prone to muscle fatigue and poor performance. “The findings are contrary to the popular assumption that men’s bodies are more naturally athletic,” observes lead author Thomas Beltrame, Ph.D. Previous research had found that older men and male children tend to have faster oxygen uptake than women.

Yoga Soothes the Blues Taking a 90-minute hatha yoga class twice a week for eight weeks steadily lowered symptoms of depression in all 20 men and women with mild to moderate forms of clinical depression that participated in a recent University of California, San Francisco, study. Another 18 depressed adults attending an attention control class for the same period of time, afterwards had somewhat lower depression scores overall, but less than half the improvement, plus they showed greater mood fluctuation.

Meds in Urban Streams Drive Microbial Resistance

A new study published in the journal Ecosphere confirms that in urban streams, persistent pharmaceutical pollution can cause aquatic microbial communities to become resistant to drugs. Researchers evaluated the presence of pharmaceuticals, including painkillers, stimulants, antihistamines and antibiotics, in four streams in Baltimore, Maryland. Then they measured the microbial response to drug exposure. Selected study sites represented a gradient of development from suburban to urban. Emma Rosi, an aquatic ecologist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies and lead author on the study, explains, “Wastewater treatment facilities are not equipped to remove many pharmaceutical compounds. We were interested in how stream microorganisms, which perform key ecosystem services like removing nutrients and breaking down leaf litter, respond to pharmaceutical pollution. When we expose streams to pharmaceutical pollution, we are unwittingly altering their microbial communities, yet little is known about what this means for ecological function and water quality.”

Grocer Shuns Plastic Trays

The British supermarket chain Iceland is planning to eliminate or drastically reduce plastic packaging for more than 1,000 of its house-label products by the end of 2023, switching to paperbased trays instead. Nigel Broadhurst, joint managing director of Iceland, explains that the typical ready meal was packaged in a particularly bad way. “It is currently in a black plastic tray. That black plastic is the worst possible option in terms of toxins going into the ground and the ability to recycle that product.” He also notes that instead of the usual plastic bag, grocers could put netting around a bunch of apples the same as with oranges. Iceland’s research found that 80 percent of shoppers would endorse a supermarket’s move to go plastic-free.

Recycled Plastic Transforms into Prosthetics The emerging technology of three-dimensional (3-D) printing can benefit the world in many ways. Re:Purpose for Good, in Australia, creates robotically 3-D printed prosthetic devices from recycled plastic and e-waste. It’s difficult to customize prosthetics, so more invasive surgery is often needed to make standard sizes fit the patient. Other companies produce 3-D printed prosthetic hands and arms, but Re:Purpose for Good customizes both hands and feet at a much lower cost. The company’s robotics and prosthetics engineer Gerardo Montoya, who had been working on 3-D printing prosthetics for children in Mexico, merged the idea with a desire to do something about the 8 million tons of plastic entering the oceans. Along with plastic waste, they also use e-waste such as discarded smartphones that have all the circuitry and microprocessors needed for advanced features. The company even plans to teach their prosthetic-making process to children as part of their science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) curriculum, so they can learn 3-D printing skills. They’re making it open source so more people can get involved without patent restrictions.

Love Rocks

Inspiring Messages that Surprise

Artistically decorated rocks featuring inspirational messages are turning up in Mobile, Alabama, and along the Gulf of Mexico shoreline as part of The Kindness Rocks Project (TheKindnessRocksProject.com). Anyone can paint rocks and “plant” them for someone else to discover. Likewise, everyone is invited to hunt for kindness rocks. Those that find a rock are free to take it, plant it somewhere else or leave it for someone else to find. The grassroots movement was created to spread inspiration and motivation for unsuspecting recipients through the random placement of the rocks in public spaces. The goal is to encourage others to find creative ways to reach out and brighten someone else’s day unexpectedly, whether it’s through kindness rocks, love notes or random acts of generosity. Natural Approaches Resolve Major Illnesses by Linda Sechrist

A

lthough natural health enthusiasts may recognize alternative healing modalities as a preferred approach to treatment, in the face of major health issues, even they tend to join the crowd that’s turning first to conventional medicine. Thus, many gentler modalities described in The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, co-authored by doctors of naturopathy Michael T. Murray and Joseph Pizzorno, remain largely untapped resources. Ignored because they are unsupported by traditional science-based medicine, holistic measures such as acupuncture, energy medicine, essential oils, herbs, detoxification, health-promoting diets, homeopathy, prayer and meditation, supplementation, yoga, massage and naturopathy are sacrificed in favor of often painful medical procedures and prescription drugs which can’t claim to permanently cure anything and can have many harmful side effects. 16

Lack of Awareness

“A patient that dabbles in holistic medicine for minor health issues such as indigestion, headache or insomnia often turns to conventional methods after receiving a serious diagnosis such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer because they are scared,” observes holistic physician Dr. Wendy Warner, medical director of Medicine in Balance, in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. The co-author of Boosting Your Immunity for Dummies suggests that relatively few people turn to natural solutions for both preventive and therapeutic measures because they’re unaware they exist. Integrative oncologists and endocrinologists that are aware of the benefits of natural complementary methods are scarce. Relatively few conventional doctors are educated in functional medicine. “Yet complementary modalities such as acupuncture, massage and some essential oils can support the immune system and help an individual deal with stress experienced from coping with their illness,” says Warner.

inwAwakenings.com

Rob Wergin, an experienced energy medicine practitioner, speaks from experience regarding clients that consult him for lifethreatening diagnoses. “When I see them, they’re desperate and have exhausted all conventional methods. I’m their lastditch effort,” remarks Wergin. The most frequent reason he hears is, “My family, friends and doctor told me not to waste my money on charlatans.” “People find it challenging to put faith in natural methods and are nervous about going against a doctor’s advice until they feel or see positive results; even these may not provide sufficient motivation to continue with alternative treatments,” he says. “I believe this is the result of the influence of pharmaceutical ads promising results, the medical community’s belief in proof solely through clinical trials, websites like Quackwatch.com and well-meaning friends insisting that the conventional route is the only way to go. It’s sad to see the gravity of these influences pulling clients back into solely believing in the Western model of medicine,” says Wergin. Ann Lee, a doctor of naturopathy, acupuncturist and founder of the Health for Life Clinic, Inc., in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, notes, “This mindset continues to get reinforced by insurance companies that do not cover alternatives. Paying out of pocket for medical expenses also influences a patient’s choices.” Kelly Noonan-Gores and Adam Schomer, director and producer, respectively, of the documentary film HEAL, suggest that unconscious conditioning plays the biggest role in an individual’s choices. “We are deeply conditioned to view medical specialists and prestigious medical institutions as the ones with all the answers. Sometimes they do and some-

times they don’t,” says Noonan-Gores, who intends to have her film awaken viewers to the possibilities of alternative paths of healing. As just one other example noted in the film, thousands have used the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), tapping on their body to help release the trauma and stress often associated with illness.

EFT, which I continue to use and benefit from. However, despite everything I’ve learned, I can’t give up on all Western medicine, put my faith in alternatives and let my intuition and faith guide me to healing. It’s easier to be skeptical than to have faith,” Lee says.

Resistance to Change

Sheila Tucker, a resident of Navarre, Florida, has been a registered nurse for 20 years, practicing in hospital settings such as critical care, emergency and administration. “I know and understand doctors, surgeries and pharmaceutical treatments and hospitals,” says Tucker, who recalls that throughout her life she was taught to believe in a system that suddenly stopped working for her. “In 2014, I was dying from a rare autoimmune condition, requiring full-time care, and planning my funeral. Doctors had tried everything, yet my health continued to decline. When I saw a friend’s Facebook posts about her use of essential oils, I was curious, but reluctant to reach out, and didn’t want anyone to know that I called her for advice,” recalls Tucker. “Shortly after my friend arrived with her oils, my husband came home with our daughter, who had strep throat and a fever. She made us promise to use selected oils through the night and prayed with us.” Tucker attributes the miracle of her daughter’s turnaround the next morning to shifting her paradigm and opening her up to believing in the healing power of essential oils. Thanks to her friend and role model, Tucker learned how to use therapeuticgrade oils, supplements and a healthy diet to cleanse her body of the heavy toxic load accumulated from several years of expensive drug treatments. Today, she is a healthy and enthusiastic advocate, and her personal results opened the eyes of her physician to the point where she also shifted her own philosophy of healing. Tucker now offers educational classes in her office and online through her

“The conventional medical community wants to maintain the model in which they have heavily invested centuries of time, energy and money. Patients that investigate integrative and complementary medicine may resist hearing that in order to get well, they might need to change their worldview and lifestyle, take a leave of absence from their job, develop a spiritual practice, exercise or maybe even leave a toxic relationship,” says Schomer. “Conventional medicine says take this pill and keep living your life the same way,” says Schomer. “We are not demonizing doctors, pharmaceuticals or the medical system. We simply believe that individuals are more empowered to heal when they take control of their health.” Eva Lee, a resident of Los Angeles featured in the documentary, suffers from a rare and unpredictable form of blistering skin inflammation. “I’ve tested negative for faulty genes and all sorts of rare viruses and bacteria, which helped point me towards holistic methods. So far, following the directives of Dr. Mark Emerson, a chiropractor specializing in nutrition, in Maui, Hawaii, who I met while filming, has helped my body become healthier and deal with inflammation levels that rapidly reduced as soon as I detoxed and eliminated meat and dairy from my diet,” says Lee. Still, it’s hard for her to accept that her condition could be due to the type of stress and suppressed emotions that Anthony William explores in his book Medical Medium: Secrets Behind Chronic and Mystery Illness and How to Finally Heal. “Before, I wasn’t familiar with

Quiet Role Models

website FloridaOilsRN.com that reaches hundreds of individuals worldwide. She advises, “Reach out to people that you see are having positive results with a different healing system than yours. Ask them to show, help and teach you. I’ve seen many people restored to health by using methods that science is only beginning to understand.”

It’s a Marathon

“Outside of any dominant paradigm, it’s easier to cast suspicion than to make curious inquiry and, over time, working within a dominant worldview creates polarity, the antithesis of ‘wholism’. An inclusive approach integrates all medical and complementary approaches, as well as interaction with the natural world,” says Patrick Hanaway, a family physician and founder of Family to Family Medicine, in Asheville, North Carolina. Hanaway, the former director of medical education for the Institute for Functional Medicine and the first medical director at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, explains, “Doctors have a rigorous job filled with responsibility. Change is difficult and investigating vastly different ways of practicing medicine requires a degree of curiosity and openness. I am heartened by thought leaders and heads of top medical schools who are presently opening up to functional medicine, natural medicine and complementary approaches.” “The paradigm shift we are ushering in has been 50 years in the making,” assesses Hanaway. “Some medical professionals are immersed in a polar view of right and wrong, offering personal attacks and disparaging comments to maintain control of the dialogue. This is not appreciated by patients who look to the doctor as a teacher—the Latin docere means to teach. “The movement to change medicine and the cultural paradigm of healing is a marathon, not a sprint, and those of us involved are prepared to stay the course.” Linda Sechrist is a senior staff writer for Natural Awakenings. remenstrual syndrome (PMS) is characterized by the cyclic occurrence of physical, behavioral and psychological symptoms during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle disappearing within a few days of the onset of menstruation. PMS is one of the most common health issues in women of reproductive age and symptoms including irritability, anxiety, aggression, depression and changes in

concentration are thought to be primarily due to changes in neurotransmitters and prostaglandins. The normal progesterone and estradiol decline at the end of the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle results in withdrawal of the hormonal effects on serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. Chasteberry has been used for centuries to support women with hormone-related gynecologic complaints. Chasteberry is well-known for its balancing effect on female hormones, prompting more regular cycles. Modern research has validated this traditional use by showing that various preparations of chasteberry demonstrate positive effects in women with PMS. The German Commission E, the German equivalent of the Food and Drug Administration, approves the use of chasteberry to support menstrual cycle regularity, breast tenderness, and PMS; and it is widely recommended by family physicians and gynecologists in Germany for these issues. Extracts called iridoids and flavonoids are thought to exert their benefits through indirect effects on various hormones, especially prolactin and progesterone. Chasteberry essentially decreases the effects of estrogen while increasing the effects of progesterone, while also easing the common, transient symptom of mild breast tenderness.

Curcumin Extract Curcumin, the potent anti-inflammatory extract from turmeric, has been extensively researched and shown to have potent anti-inflammatory effects in the body. While curcumin has not traditionally been used for PMS, newer research and clinical experience supports its important role in relieving PMS symptoms. Studies have demonstrated an action of curcumin in modulating serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, thus exerting an antidepressant effect. In addition, curcumin reduces the inflammation associated with many PMS symptoms such as pain, swelling and inflammation such as breast pain and engorgement, headaches, extremity edema and others.

A recent study on curcumin was conducted to evaluate the effects on the severity of premenstrual mood, behavior and physical symptoms. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was in healthy 21 to 35 years old women with regular menstrual cycles who had at least five symptoms of 19 on a PMS questionnaire. Group one received 100 milligrams of curcumin every 12 hours from seven days before and until three days after the onset of menstrual bleeding for three consecutive menstrual cycles. Group two received placebo in the same regimen. Total severity of PMS score reduced from 102.6 to 42.47 with a mean change of 59.59 in the curcumin group, thus verifying the beneficial effects of this healthy extract. PMS is a very common and disruptive illness for many women. Chasteberry, a traditional herbal solution, and curcumin, a new modern approach, are two potent natural methods to relieving the symptoms of what can often be a quite severe and debilitating syndrome. Bioidentical Hormones

Is it better for menopausal symptoms? Catching up with

DR. PAMELA LANGENDERFER

B

ioidentical hormones have been used by naturopathic physicians as an alternative to conventional hormone replacement therapy for over 30 years. The popularity of using bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for women entering perimenopause or menopause has increased in popularity over the past 14 years. Local practitioner, Dr. Pamela Langenderfer, naturopathic physician, acupuncturist, infertility/hormone care specialist and co-founder of Lakeside Holistic Health, firmly believes in the benefits of bioidentical hormones and uses them regularly in her practice.

NA: The term “bioidentical hormone replacement therapy” is becoming more mainstream and more women are discovering this alternative way to help ease their hormone issues. What exactly are bioidentical hormones and are they safer or better than herbs and other hormone replacement therapy options? PL: The answer is both yes and no. It really all

flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, brain fog and osteoporosis. My approach to hormone therapy has always been to use the least amount of hormone possible to make the person comfortable. What I realized long ago is that if I only replaced the person’s hormones, they still often came back not feeling optimal. Their hot flashes may have gone away and their sleeping improved, but they still felt tired or had weight gain. That’s when I realized that the bigger picture needed to be addressed. The way I look at the body is like a tree: branches, roots and soil. The branches are the symptoms we experience such as fatigue, weight gain, hot flashes, and digestive issues. If I only treat the branches on the tree, even with natural medicine, it is just putting a Band-Aid on the problems. The root of the problem must be addressed. Just like a tree needs fertile soil to flourish, so does the body.

chronic infections, and stress. The new world of genomics is changing how we do medicine. Each of us are unique and thus don’t respond to things in the same way. Genetically, some people don’t break down estrogen very well and thus have side effects when they take it.

NA: This whole-body approach is drastically different than conventional hormone replacement therapy that just focuses on one aspect, which is taking the hormone pill. PL: This is when natural medicine

flourishes because optimizing the terrain is essential. By addressing the bigger question as to why someone can’t tolerate the hormone we can optimize the body so it can utilize it correctly. When a woman decides to take bioidentical hormones, I encourage her to do yearly hormone testing for monitoring. This is the best tool to make sure she is metabolizing the hormones correctly.

NA: Is there anything else you recommend to women considering bioidentical hormone replacement therapy? PL: Bioidentical hormones can provide

a natural way to create hormonal balance and there is no one way or right way to treat imbalances with hormones. Each of us is completely unique, and your treatment should be customized and individual to you. Lakeside Holistic Health has offices located at 518 N. 4th St. in Coeur d’Alene, ID, and 21651 E. Thermography vs. Mammography What is the best option? by Alycia Policani

C

oncerns over breast cancer have crossed all our minds, especially if you are a woman, at least once in our lives. We are constantly bombarded by images of women fighting breast cancer, pleas for donations by various organizations to combat the disease, and have a whole month devoted to stomping it out of existence. But what, if any, significant strides have been made to aid in the early detection of this disease in the past 10, 20 or even 30 years? It seems that the current answer has been breast mammography. But do mammograms really aid in early detection? The fact of the matter is that mammography is a study of anatomy. It looks at breast structure. When a tumor has grown large enough (about four billion cells) and dense enough to block an x-ray beam, it produces an image on the x-ray plate and therefore can be detected by the radiologist. It can take years for a tumor to grow to this size, so it is difficult for mammograms to aid in early detection. In the past several years the sensitivity of mammograms has improved with digital imagery

22

Inland Northwest

and now 3D mammography, allowing for a clearer, more precise picture. This is certainly a great benefit, but if you are under the age of 50 or have dense breast tissue, mammography can be limited in mass detection. Breast thermography on the other hand, is a test of physiology. It does not look at anatomy or structure, it reads infra-red heat radiating from the surface of the body. The first use of thermography came in 1957 when R. Lawson discovered that skin temperature over a cancer in the breast was higher than that of normal tissue. Cancer cells produce something called angioneogenic factors which aid in establishing blood flow to the tumor. Increased blood flow means increased heat. Because physiologic changes always predate structural changes, sometimes by many years, breast thermography does aid in early detection. The earlier the indication of abnormality, the earlier the intervention and treatment, leading to better outcomes. Plus, because the change in physiology detected by breast thermography occurs prior to the development of the mass, the

inwAwakenings.com

Here is an example of the benefits of monitoring estrogen levels using risk assessment thermal imaging. This woman’s image on the left shows high estrogen activity designated by all the black lines reaching deep into her chest. The image on the right was taken three months later. It shows greatly diminished estrogen activity. She accomplished this by making simple lifestyle changes, which in turn, decreases her risk for breast cancer.

physician can start a patient on a plan that might just change that physiology before it develops into a mass. The bottom line is that neither mammography nor thermography can diagnose breast cancer. They are simply diagnostic tests that show a possible disease process and initiate further exploration. Many studies conducted on thousands of women around the world have proven thermography’s role in the early detection and monitoring of abnormal breast physiology and the establishment of risk factors that may lead to the development or existence of cancer. In a large U.S. study, looking at 37,050 women, breast thermography was able to identify 56 cancers per 1,000 thermograms. This is 10 times higher than the BCDDP studies in which only 5.6 cancers per 1,000 mammograms were detected. Another large study in France found 73 percent accuracy in the diagnosis of 486 breast cancer patients using breast thermography. Worldwide retrospective studies have found thermograms were positive in a minimum of 71 percent and maximum of 93 percent of patients with breast cancer. Additionally, an abnormal thermogram is 10 times more significant as a future risk indicator for breast cancer than first order family history of the

disease. A persistently abnormal thermogram carries with it a 22 times higher risk of future breast cancer. That all being said, mammograms and thermograms are not antagonistic. They are looking at structure and function, respectively. It’s comparing apples to oranges. They are not competitive procedures and it is the untrained clinician that views them as such. The procedures should be viewed as complimentary and every woman should have both procedures, when it’s appropriate. As always, an integrative, preventative approach to health is what provides for the best outcomes for the health of the patient. Thermography has undergone extensive research since the 1950’s and the FDA approved thermography as an adjunctive diagnostic breast cancer screening procedure in 1982. Another great thing about thermography is that you can start screening early, age 20 and have the exam yearly. This aids in the earliest detection of negative changes within the breast tissue. Even more importantly, because it detects those early, subtle changes in physiology, it gives you the time to work with your physician on changing the risk factors, lifestyle choices, behaviors and hormonal imbalances that lead to an increased risk of developing breast cancer and therefore preventing the disease. Bad food and sugar place a lot of stress on you and your baby. Lastly, mind your physical stress. This can also be done with yoga and walking, but massage and chiropractic care can be instrumental. Prepare your pelvis for birth. This is the most important part of birth that is commonly overlooked. Nearly every single adult in America has a pelvis that does not move correctly. Recent studies suggest that sitting is the new smoking. Why is that? Because all of that sitting jams the tailbone into the hip joints causing them not to move properly. Getting a baby through a pelvis that isn’t working properly makes it much more difficult. The photo of the two pelvises illustrates this perfectly. The top pelvis, which up to 70 percent of women have, is torqued. Ideally, you’d want your pelvis to resemble the one on the bottom. The good news is that this can be corrected by a chiropractor who is specifically trained in prenatal care called the Webster technique. When your pelvis is balanced, the likelihood of your baby being in the right position goes up and that typically means an easier, more successful delivery. The benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy go on and on, like shorter and more comfortable labor times, decrease in back labor, decrease in interventions, and an overall report of happier birth experiences. For those who want the best pregnancy and birth possible, proper chiropractic care is a must. To find a chiropractor trained in prenatal care, visit icpa4kids.org Chad T. Johnson, DC is the owner of Better Life Family Chiropractic and founder of The Better Life Movement. Discover what hundreds of Spokane families already know and follow him on Facebook at Better Life Spokane or learn more about how he can help with your pediatric, prenatal and family wellness needs at BetterLifeSpokane.com.
