“Necessity is the mother of invention. A need or problem encourages creative effort to meet the need or solve the problem.” ~ Plato
Only $14.95 “I am an active runner and lacrosse player. I use Chazael Lotion before I run or do any physical activity. I apply it to my shins, hamstrings, knees and lower back. It alleviates pain and I feel stronger through the course of the exercise and it builds more endurance for my muscles.” Jameson “After a track and field championship, I was in a serious car accident that broke my wrist and ruptured a disk in my neck. I started applying Chazael Lotion three times daily on my neck and wrist. I could not believe how much relief it gave me. I was able to coach and slowly work out again. I would highly recommend Chazael to everyone who has pain or just needs that extra boost before a workout.” Linda
“At seventeen, I enlisted in the Marine Corps. At Camp Lejeune, I drank water contaminated with carcinogenic substances which gave me cancer. The Chemotherapy destroyed the cartilage in my cervical spine. The pain became so intense, I felt I would not be able to work much longer as a Physical Therapist. Hence, the creation of Chazael Lotion.”
Kevin Sgroi, PT Creator of Chazael Lotion
“I had a torn ligament in my shoulder that caused intense pain and decreased range of motion. I went to two different therapists before discovering Chazael Lotion, which immediately decreased my pain and swelling and also increased my mobility. I’m also a lacrosse player and damaged the soft tissue in my leg and could hardly walk, so I applied Chazael four times a day and within three days, I was pain free and able to run again.” Seth “Chazael Lotion not only decreased the pain I experienced from old sports and athletic injuries, it has also greatly enhanced my athletic performance. After only four weeks of using Chazael on my shoulders, biceps, triceps and chest prior to doing bench presses; I was able to increase my maximum bench press weight by 11 pounds, which had not been possible for years!” Kevin

A
voiding the criticism and judgement of others can be exhausting and futile work. I should know, I’ve spent a majority of my life trying to ‘control’ external perceptions of who I am to those around me. And yet despite my knowledge, education, advanced degrees, experience and proven competence in the world, I couldn’t quite shake this sense that I was nothing more than a big, fat fake. A fraud. And at any moment, someone was going to find out and the jig would be up—busted! I’ll tell you what—the Universe works in mysterious ways because I received a message out of the blue recently that allowed me to confront this fear head on. The message called me out on something that happened a few months prior, and in it I was called a “phony” and a “poser.” When I read those words, my heart started racing like crazy and I felt heat rising in my body. It was a fight or flight response and my immediate thought was, “Oh no! I got caught—they know the truth about me!” One of the practices I’ve been learning at the spiritual center I attend (Unity on the South Hill) is that when I’m ‘triggered’ by something, instead of reacting or telling myself a story about it, take a moment to stop, breathe and be with it. Move in with a sense of gratitude and remember it’s not happening to me but rather for me. Easier said than done of course, but I knew this was one of those moments. And so, I sat with the discomfort and asked for clarity. And after some time, I got it. I suddenly felt like hugging that message and the person who wrote it (I know that sounds weird), but it was as though a giant weight had been lifted, and my big, fat, fraud self was free to be out in the open! My biggest fear of being called a fake, phony poser happened, and the world didn’t come to an end. Instead, I was able to acknowledge that fearful shadow part of myself and bring her out into the light. Props Universe. May is our Women’s Health issue and the month we celebrate moms! It’s been almost three years since my mom made her transition out of the body, and yet I still feel her presence in virtually everything I do. I met a remarkable woman at the CdA Health and Wellness fair who had lost her mom around the same time I did. She shared with me that she resonated deeply with my experience and that she didn’t have words to describe the strong, soul-level bond she shared with her mom or the pain of losing her until she read my story. I felt honored hearing her words and we acknowledged that the souls of both our moms were swirling around us in that very divine moment of connection. We also acknowledged that not everyone experiences a strong relationship with their mom. As you’ll read in this month’s Inspiration article by Dr. Christiane Northup, “On a soul level, we’re old friends with our mothers. And they signed up for assisting us on our souls’ journeys by being willing to take on the role of our mother. And no matter how well they did or didn’t do that job, we have a job, too: to realize that though we might not have had the mother we wanted, we all got the mother our souls needed.” Here’s to you, your mom and all the powerful women in your life!

L
ocated in the Kendall Yards neighborhood of Spokane, Souls Center was founded three years ago by Julia Hayes whose vision was to promote spiritual empowerment through movement, self-reflection, creative expression, women’s circles, storytelling, spiritual teachings, recovery groups, workshops and retreats. “Souls Center was conceived from my participation in an extraordinary community of women called The Full Moon Goddesses,” explains Hayes. “What began as a small group of women learning to circle, enact intentions and practice the power of vulnerability, in no time became a large group of women from all different backgrounds seeking a depth of spiritual practice not offered by conventional means.” Hayes goes on to explain that the women she was meeting desired more opportunities to explore the calling of their hearts and minds. “I couldn’t offer enough variety in the way of workshops and teachings in my home to meet the demand,” says Hayes. “So, I did what anyone would do, I put out a prayer to the Universe, and six months later, Souls Center was born.” Souls Center offers a Women’s Soul Circle every Wednesday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., as well as weekly meditation groups, yoga classes and a variety of workshops. In addition, the Center offers a Refuge Recovery meeting five days a week, which is a Buddhistinspired approach to recovery from addictions of all kinds. Location: 707 N. Cedar, Ste. 2, Spokane. Cost: 85 percent of Souls Center offerings are by donation. For more information, or to see a full schedule of classes and events, visit SoulsCenter.com. See Resource Guide listing, page 30.

Integrated Approach to Healthcare with Virtual Portal
I
nspire Healthcare Membership is an online, on-demand system that addresses not only the physical pain, ailments and chronic disease affecting participants, but also the underlying emotional trauma and negative thoughts that block the body’s natural ability to heal. This online portal, created by local naturopath, Brooke Heather, and retired registered nurse and energy healer, Stacy Strong, starts with a virtual intake questionnaire and phone interview followed by an integrative plan of care that addresses the participant’s unique needs and goals. In addition, participants receive a personal wellness advocate, ongoing education and on-demand support virtually through phone, video call and/or email. “Stacy and I understand that pain and chronic disease have many causes, and all must be addressed before true healing can occur,” says Heather. “This means physical, mental and emotional must be addressed all at the same time. Inspire Healthcare Membership is meant to do just this while more fully and holistically supporting our participants on their unique healing journeys.” “We are fully dedicated to our participant’s well-being which, most of the time, starts with clearing the energy static out of the body,” says Strong. “Our goal is to help participants clear any and all limiting beliefs, toxic emotions, and relentless thought patterns so that the body is ready to receive the healing it needs.” Members have access to care when needed, regular ongoing communication, and discounts on therapies and products. This program is ideal for anyone who has been suffering with pain, disease or physical issues that regular medicine has not been able to help. Cost: $90 per month with a six-month minimum. For more information, visit VirtualHealthcarePortal.com or call 208-231-7149. See Resource Guide listing, page 30.
Health and Wellness Social Just for You
A
s a way to bring non-traditional healing modalities to the public in a fun and playful way, the Just for You Social Hour was born and is being held on May 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Nectar Catering and Events in downtown Spokane. “I wanted to bring an interdisciplinary approach to health and wellness into a fun and swanky party atmosphere,” explains DeAnna Kornatowski, owner of Soulistic Studios by dmk and founder of the event. “The Just for You Social Hour is a quest to connect people with resources that can positively impact their overall physical, mental and emotional well-being.” Kornatowski shares that her passion started when she was just eight years old. “From a young age, I experienced a great deal of physical pain and surgeries. I’ve always had a lot of compassion and empathy for people, and through my own spiritual journey, I’ve been introduced to many modalities that have positively impacted my life,” she says. “Sharing these alternative modalities and ways of healing seems like the natural thing to do to help others.” The Social will include therapeutic services such as BEMER therapy, Rolfing, spa facials, nutrition counseling and oil therapy. In addition, the event will feature artwork, hand-made jewelry, hand-crafted lighting, candles, dancing and more. “This is a pre funk to our bigger event being held on October 10 at the McGinnity room,” enthuses Kornatowski. “We hope to see as many people as possible on May 23 and even more in October. Stay tuned for more details!” Admission is free. Location: 120 N. Stevens, Spokane. For more information, contact 509499-0336 or email SoulisticStudios@gmail.com.

The Benefits of The Crucial Role of B Vitamins for Women Massage Cupping by Bill Higgins for Women health briefs
While it’s no secret that B vitamins are critical to our health and well-being, many of us don’t realize that we’re not getting enough of them. The eight crucial B vitamins work together as a team. Some of them help cells burn fats and glucose for energy, while others help with the production of serotonin. B vitamins work intricately together behind the scenes with amazing results. Some of the benefits include: • Improved mood • Reduced anxiety and depression • Reduced PMS symptoms • Improved memory Supplementation with B vitamins plays a crucial role in the regulation of our physiology. They can be taken orally, intravenously or intramuscularly. People who are unable to absorb these vitamins in their digestive tract do particularly well with them injected directly into the bloodstream or intramuscularly as high concentrations of water-soluble vitamins can be achieved when bypassing the digestive tract. Many people who are deficient in B-12 find great success with injectable B12 in methylated form. This crucial B vitamin is important for DNA synthesis, red and white blood cell development, and the secretion of melatonin in the brain. B12 is essential for adrenal hormone synthesis, promotion of nerve growth, and keep-

Cupping is one of the oldest globally practiced medical treatments dating back over 3,500 years. During a cupping massage session, cups are placed on the areas to be treated and a suction is created which draws the tissue up into the cup. This safe and comfortable practice is highly effective for many conditions. Cupping therapy releases tight tissues, drains stagnation and toxins, and loosens adhesions, all while bringing fresh blood flow to the skin and muscles. The stagnation is drawn out and processed by the lymph system. In addition, cupping engages the nervous system to promote relaxation. Cupping can help: • Release tight, restricted muscles anywhere in the body, especially in the upper and lower back, glutes and legs. • Reduce the appearance of cellulite by loosening adhesions and connective tissue, removing toxins and increasing circulation. • Increase digestive health by working with the small and large intestines, stomach, colon and support structures. • Reduce menopausal discomfort. • Improve sinus issues, TMJ and headaches. • Support healthy facial skin by increasing circulation, decreasing tension, draining stagnant facial tissues and releasing of expression lines. Janet Single-Schwall owns Namaste Holistic Massage Therapy in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Her goal is to meet her client’s needs by providing high quality, therapeutic, comfortable and affordable care. She notes that emotional trauma can also occur right in the workplace. “We are far more sensitive to our environments like the workplace, where we spend most of our days. When we’re unaware of our sensitivities, we can let negative emotions of others trigger our own patterns of self-doubt, which can lead to our own suffering—even when it has nothing to do with us.” To avoid taking on other people’s negative energy, Catlin emphasizes that clearing one’s own energy field daily is as important as brushing your teeth. She builds her work upon authenticity, fearlessness to love and show up in the world as one’s true self, and the freedom for people to be themselves. “I help people find relief in ways that’s not scary or hard,” she says, “and in doing that, I help open their creativity, which is what I think we’re here to express.” Imagine Creations is located at 20 W. Self-Care As Bedrock
HER SOUL IN BLOOM Self-Care for All Stages of Life by Marlaina Donato
T
o be female is to be blessed with an innate gift for multitasking, but in our fast-paced, jam-packed world, daily life for most women is a juggling act that can come with a steep price tag if self-care isn’t on the to-do list. Depression, anxiety and feeling overwhelmed are all too common. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in eight women experience depression during their lifetime—twice the rate of men.
Seasons of a Woman’s Life Each decade poses unique challenges. For women in their 20s and early 30s, comparing and finding one’s own path can be significant. “The feminist movement of our mothers’ generation opened doors, but so many 20- and 30-something women have interpreted that as, ‘I have to do everything and be everything,’” says Christine Hassler, life coach and author of Expectation Hang12

over: Overcoming Disappointment in Work, Love, and Life. The San Diego-based motivational speaker views self-care to be as vital as education. “Women are not taught in high school and college how to take care of themselves. Prioritizing self-care is so important. I see so many young women with adrenal or thyroid burnout and eating disorders. All of that comes down to stress, relationship to self and lack of self-care.” The personal interests of women in their 30s and 40s trying to balance motherhood and career often get lost in the tangled underbrush of daily logistics. There can be a deep longing for identity well into the 50s, especially when children leave the nest. Fears of aging and loneliness often accompany women 60 and older. By passionately and joyously taking care of body and spirit, women of any generation can find renewal.
inwAwakenings.com
Women play vital roles in family and community, much like the foundation of a sound building, and if self-care is not the bedrock, all that is supported by it is likely to be compromised. “I believe we’ve taken the bait, the promise that if we arrange our life circumstances just so, we’ll feel ease and happiness. We’re getting to a place as a collective where we see a bankruptcy in that,” says Miami-based holistic women’s psychiatrist Dr. Kelly Brogan, bestselling author of A Mind of Your Own: The Truth About Depression and How Women Can Heal Their Bodies to Reclaim Their Lives. Body-mind-spirit self-care is the heart of Brogan’s approach, and self-love is the lifeblood. “Self-love is quite elusive for most of us, perhaps because our selfesteem is contingent [upon it], and we only feel good about ourselves under certain circumstances. The daily choice to prioritize caring for oneself can ultimately lead to an experience of self-love and wholeness,” says Brogan, who compares a ritualized system of daily self-care that comes first to putting on the proverbial oxygen mask before attempting to meet the needs of others. “Balancing self-love and caring for others starts with recognizing and accepting that it’s possible for you to effectively do both. Self-love at the soul level is the catalyst for healing on all levels, which in turn drives our level of self-worth,” concurs Teigan Draig, a spiritual life coach and busy home-schooling mom in Spencerville, Ohio. She reminds us that putting our needs above the wants of others is not being selfish, but is an emotional necessity that helps women get out of the loop of self-defeatism and self-sabotage. “The first step to finding your fire is learning to love yourself, all of yourself. Self-care and selflove are a total wellness package.”

Benefits of Self-Nourishment
Our Emotions As Wellspring
Many psychologists agree that self-care can help to improve concentration, promote relaxation, fortify relationships and boost productivity. Most women crave more me-time, but don’t know how to implement change. “Without a premise of self-care, we react based on stress patterns. We react with more tension, irritability, guilt and obligation. We say, ‘Yes’ when we want to say, ‘No’. However, when we take stock in our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being, we’re less reactive,” observes Hassler, who underscores self-care as an investment for life. “Most women have inner critics and a negative relationship with self. Self-care is essential so we can turn down the volume of the inner critic, stop people-pleasing and make self-honoring choices.” Balancing motherhood and career or other obligations can leave many women running on empty and resentful. “We would never tell a loved one who desperately needed some TLC to get over it and just keep going. As busy women, when we don’t take the time to care for ourselves, the consequence is our children getting a mom who is preoccupied, anxious and disconnected,” says women’s life coach Veronica Paris, in San Diego. Catering to everyone’s desires and spreading ourselves too thin can backfire. Paris asks, “How do I want my kids to look back on me as a mother? By taking the time to self-care, we’re taking accountability for how we want to show up in our world rather than shape-shifting from one situation to the next. We can teach our children how to do the same.”
For too many women, another common byproduct of self-neglect can be emotional numbing and feeling “flatlined”. A toxic or addictive relationship to food, alcohol or shopping can be a symptom of a deep need to nourish the self and give a voice to suppressed feelings. “One of our greatest challenges is that we’ve become disconnected from our deep seat of power, which is our capacity to feel,” says Brogan. “We’ve been enculturated to disregard our experience of feeling emotions, and because of this, it’s been reduced to a very narrow bandwidth.” Brogan believes that it is key for women to reestablish a connection to nature’s rhythms and their own feminine, fluid energy, as well as giving up the need to control. “I think it’s the work of many women to understand that we’re not here to meet the needs of everyone on the planet—and with our loved ones, it disempowers them as much as we’re feeling disempowered. We’re here to meet our own needs and then offer compassion and caring in a way that comes from a more boundaried space.” Hassler affirms that when women are fully present, every aspect of life can be viewed through a clearer lens. “Self-care helps us tap into our super power, which is our intuition, and by doing that, we know what we need and act on that.”
Thrive With Small Changes Beginning the day with self-care can be as simple as taking the time to meditate and breathe deeply for a minute or two before getting out of bed and opting for a healthier breakfast. Feeding our senses and feasting
on what gives us joy can be a way of life. “Self-care does not necessarily have to involve time; it’s a way of being,” says Hassler. “The more time we spend on self-care tells the subconscious mind that we’re worth it.” Draig suggests setting personal boundaries, and part of this means reserving time for ourselves. “When I became a new mother, I was running on fumes. Sometimes my daily me-time was only five minutes here or 10 minutes there, but it saved my sanity. Learn to schedule self-care time in your calendar as you would anything else,” she says, noting, “My house was not always spotless, but it was a trade I was willing to make so I could take care of myself and be a better mother.” Being innovative can be an ally. “Ten minutes walking the dog or taking the baby out in a stroller can become 10 minutes spent saying positive self-affirmations,” suggests Paris. “That 15-minute drive can be spent deep breathing instead of listening to the news on the radio.” Blooming into our best possible self is returning to our essence. “It’s about taking off the masks, no longer living according to expectations and other people. It’s about radical self-acceptance,” says Hassler. Each decade poses an invitation to grow and commit to self-nourishment. “There will be days where you feel like you can’t get the hang of it, but you’ll arrive, and when you do, no matter what age you are, it can be magical,” Draig says. Peter Sagal on
RUNNING TOWARD MINDFULNESS by Randy Kambic
T
he 5 million faithful listeners of National Public Radio’s award-winning weekly broadcast Wait Wait... Don’t Tell Me! know that 20-year host Peter Sagal infuses wit and wisdom into his views of the news and the world. In his new book, The Incomplete Book of Running, he brings his trademark humor to a memoir that posits running as a mode of survival—and hope, persistence, practice and love as vehicles of redemption. Sagal’s collection of deeply personal lessons encompasses the emotional spectrum of running, body image and the special bonding between fellow runners. His exhilarating guide to life suggests we keep moving forward in all ways. He also reflects upon the 2013 Boston Marathon, where he finished moments before two bombs exploded, and explores how running helped him cope with a devastating divorce, depression and more. Sagal is also a playwright, screenwriter and the host of PBS’ Constitution USA with Peter Sagal when he’s not writing about the recreation he took up in mid-life where he found himself “lost, in a dark place” after a personal crisis. He lives near Chicago with his wife, Mara.
After becoming a serious runner at nearly 40, when did 14
Inland Northwest
you realize running had evolved into something more than a simple mission to get healthy?
I was concerned about my weight, but mainly I was also concerned about getting older. I ran my first marathon in 2005 as an emotional reaction to growing older, and that’s when it all began to change for me. It struck me in a deep way as something I wanted to do better. I’ve rarely experienced the classic “runner’s high”—that endorphin-caused euphoria—although I do believe it exists. Rather, what’s more common is the sense that everything—body, mind—is working in concert, without discomfort, with strength, with ease. To paraphrase a line from Kurt Vonnegut, it’s when “everything is beautiful, and nothing hurts.”
As an advocate of escaping our “digital dystopia” of electronic screens by running outdoors, what’s the benefit you see in unplugging?
I’m a big fan of evolutionary biology. We evolved in very different circumstances than what we are living in now; to be attentive to the world and not with a screen
inwAwakenings.com
in front of us. The reason we are up on two legs is so that we can look around and think. We’re supposed to ruminate. We didn’t evolve these extraordinary brains and self-consciousness so we could outsource our thinking. Anybody who has done creative work knows what’s needed to do that is uninterrupted thought.
What can non-runners take away from your book?
Go outside. We weren’t meant to spend so much time in offices. Take the headphones off, move, use your body. Look at little kids in playgrounds—they’re just running around before getting trained into games. We forget that. We spend so much time in our heads reading, watching screens. I’ve met people who say they don’t run, but they walk, ride bikes, hike in the woods. Those people are getting many of the same benefits as running.
Of the many anecdotes you cite about bonding with others through running, which one was the most gratifying? Probably when I ran with William Greer, who I didn’t even know 24 hours before we ran the 2013 Boston Marathon, and by the end of that day we were friends forever because of all we went through together. [Greer is visually impaired and Sagal was his volunteer guide during the race.] We’re still in touch; we sometimes run together. He wouldn’t have finished if I wasn’t helping him and I wouldn’t have finished if he wasn’t helping me. Randy Kambic is a freelance writer and editor, in Estero, Florida.

When the “fight-or-flight” stress response is activated in the presence of danger or emotional distress, the body has one objective: get us to safety. Yet, many times, the amygdala—the part of the brain that plays a key role in this process—becomes hyper alert and falsely perceives danger when there is none. Trauma becomes hardwired into the nervous system. Pain syndromes and tension are common symptoms. No matter what the pattern for handling trauma, it takes a lot of work for the body to repress emotions, and it will create tension in the form of “armoring” to defend against unwanted feelings. “Trauma is a physiological experience. Body tension that results from unresolved trauma will not respond to only releasing muscle tension,” explains Lissa Wheeler, author of Engaging Resilience: Heal the Physical Impact of Emotional Trauma: A Guide for Bodywork Practitioners. Wheeler’s Medford, Massachusetts, practice focuses on releasing emotional patterns locked in tissue memory. “When the nervous system is frozen in a state of threat long after the actual threat is gone, all of the body’s activities of healthy regulation are challenged. This affects not only skeletal muscles, but also smooth muscle such as what’s found in the gastrointestinal tract. Sleep problems and teeth grinding can also result.”
Cellular Memory and CranioSacral Therapy
Swedish massage, Thai massage and shiatsu are all ideal treatments for chronic pain, grief and emotional imprints locked within the body’s cellular consciousness. CranioSacral Therapy (CST) offers a gentler alternative. “CranioSacral Therapy can unravel cellular stories and assist in freeing repressed or preverbal emotions from childhood,” says Seattle-based CST

experiencing acute grief or the effects of a traumatic past. A Swedish study published in the Journal of Clinical Nursing shows that bereaved individuals that received 25-minute hand and/or foot massages once a week for eight weeks felt greater comfort and were more capable of coping with stress.

therapist Barbara Coon. “Experiences are held in the body. Stress and muscular tension activate the vagus nerve, and CST focuses on calming [it].” The vagus nerve facilitates communication between the brain and the heart, lungs and gut. Coon attests to the modality’s body-centered support for reducing anxiety, depression, panic attacks, memory loss, sleep disturbances and grief. “Some people respond well to deep tissue work, while others do better with the gentleness of CranioSacral Therapy,” says Wheeler. “Like a perfect dance partner, a skilled bodywork practitioner follows the nervous system and helps the client access sources of trauma.”
Healing Frequencies
Clinical aromatherapy and therapeutic sound can also play a vital role in emotional healing, especially when combined with bodywork. Kelli Passeri, a massage therapist and owner of Sound and Stone Massage, in Pittsburg, Kansas, utilizes a subwoofer speaker beneath her massage table so clients can feel the vibrations of the music. “I play music recorded in specific frequencies that align with the body and the chakras or energy centers to help rebalance the energy body,” says Passeri, who also uses rose quartz crystals in her hot stone sessions. She relies on aromatherapy blends that promote opening on both physical and emotional levels. Passeri has observed common pain patterns in her clients that often don’t have a physical cause. “The sacrum tends to hold on to lifelong traumatic emotions from childhood, and the shoulders tend to reflect more current emotional blockages and issues,” she says, adding, “I encourage my clients to open up or cry because it’s a healthy thing to do. There’s no need for embarrassment and is totally okay.” Healing on any level might take time, but allowing the body’s stories to be witnessed without judgement is key. “The good news is that when trauma is worked through, the whole body is much more resilient and has a greater capacity to live life fully,” Wheeler says. Marlaina Donato authored Multidimensional Aromatherapy and several other books. Connect at AutumnEmbersMusic.com.

Healing with Horses Sanctuary by Amber McKenzie
W
hen I was 13, I jumped off the back of a pregnant horse who was running toward a barbed wire fence and I couldn’t stop her. The instant I jumped off, she stopped running. Phew! But I decided after that (painful) experience, I didn’t really need horses in my life. Fast forward 30 years, I meet Gloria Lybecker, owner and lead facilitator at Healing with Horses Sanctuary. Gloria shares her deep passion and expertise of equine-led growth and healing programs with me, and I start wondering what I’m missing. I explain to Gloria that I don’t understand how a horse can facilitate healing. She suggests an experiential approach and an abbreviated Constellations with Horses workshop session, and I was immediately in. The entire experience blew my mind.
Overview
Constellations with Horses is a program that explores our shadow sides with empathy and self-compassion by integrating Gloria’s Healing Herd of seven horses, HeartMath and cutting-edge neuroscience. I learned that research has proven the human heart has a larger electromagnetic field and higher intelligence than the brain and that the heart’s electrical and magnetic fields extend up to 10 feet around the body. I also learned that the horse’s electromagnetic heart field is five times stronger and bigger than a human’s and that it can actually influence our own heart rhythms. This is why 18

many people feel a sense of well-being and peace while in the presence of horse, which I definitely experienced.
My Experience
A lot happened in our three-hour session facilitated by Gloria Lybecker and Flow Coordinator Ruth Crea. Both facilitators offered education, guidance and support throughout the session and I felt very prepared for everything I encountered. My first task was to walk around the corrals and observe all seven horses and write down my observations from each horse on one side of the page, and what I felt in my body on the other. The first horse was black with a little white patch between his eyes. He approached me from behind the fence and looked directly into my eyes. I felt complete and total presence from him— like he knew me and was looking directly into my soul. I immediately started crying, which surprised me, and my heart began beating very fast. I wrote down that it felt “difficult being looked at so deeply.” This horse seemed to follow me—like a shadow. I wrote that down too. The next

Aragon, Amber and Gloria
was a cute little mini horse. He seemed to be asking for my attention—he wanted to be seen and acknowledged. It immediately reminded me of my child self who loved attention and feeling important to others. I wrote that down. The next was a big white horse. While watching him, he laid down in the dirt and started rolling around enthusiastically, then got up and shook everything off. I saw dirt, hair and debris flying off him as he shook. I laughed and wrote down, “he’s releasing what’s no longer necessary with complete joy and abandon. I could use some of that!” And on it went with all seven horses. Each a mirror reflecting something in me and teaching me about myself.
Aragon
The facilitators and I process this experience in depth, and it felt good. The next phase was meeting one-on-one with the horse I felt the most connection with in an area called the “sacred circle” which represents the energetic field of the client’s life. Wow. I knew I was supposed to meet with the first horse whose name is Aragon, which means “equally strong, dramatic and romantic.” I can’t even begin to express the power of this session. Thanks to the steady presence of Aragon and his gentle coaching, I came face-to-face with parts of myself that were deeply uncomfortable but ready to emerge. Aragon offered me a sense of safety, comfort and playfulness followed by a quick yet subtle shift in energy that became uncomfortable and provided me an opportunity to stand my ground and create the boundary that the moment required. How did he know I needed that? He taught me to trust myself and my own inner wisdom and to take action when necessary. I could go on and on about this experience, but if you are curious about the power of the horse-human connection, then I highly suggest you enroll in an upcoming workshop at Healing with Horses Sanctuary! Powerful beyond belief. For more information about upcoming workshops and classes, visit Healing WithHorsesSanctuary.com or call Gloria Lybecker at 509-876-1802.

being willing to take on the role of our mother. And no matter how well they did or didn’t do that job, we have a job, too: to realize that though we might not have had the mother we wanted, we all got the mother our souls needed. What’s more, every single one of us can connect right now with the mother
energy that made all of our bodies in the first place—the Earth herself. It has been said that when you lavish your attention on the Earth—on a flower, or a stream or any aspect of nature—that energy loves you right back. In the book series The Ringing Cedars, Anastasia refers to the land you live on and love as, “Love dissolved in space.” You can feel this when you travel to parks and gardens, farms and yards that have been loved by those who live there. This mothering energy is available to each of us from the Earth and from Mother Nature— no matter what has happened with your biological mother. So here is my prescription for a glorious Mother’s Day. Call your mother—in spirit, if she is no longer in a body—or if speaking with her directly is too painful. Here’s a special prayer: “With my Spirit, I send Divine Love to my mother’s Spirit.” That’s it. Just say this prayer. With your whole heart. And let go of the outcome.

Defiant Collagen Blend Coffee Recipe by Ronnie Watson
C
ollagen is a protein that occurs in organic tissues, and there are good reasons women should consider including it in their diet or as a supplement. What is collagen and why drink it in coffee? Collagen is a protein that takes up most of the space in connective tissues and in between other types of cells. It is present in basically every type of tissue in the human body—corneas, blood vessels, the digestive system, spinal discs, dentin (a component of teeth), muscle tissue, ligaments, cartilage, hair, placentas, and skin all contain or are made up largely of collagen. The nature of everything in the universe is to decay, and our bodies are no exception. Collagen production takes place naturally - however as we age, a

little less collagen production takes place. Cartilage shrinks, muscles get less supple, skin starts to sag, eyesight declines and hair doesn’t grow as fast, as thick, or stops growing altogether and slower collagen production is part of the cause. This is why collagen is considered a vital supplement. Since there are also known benefits to drinking coffee by itself, adding collagen to coffee (as we did to our Defiant Coffee Collagen Blend) makes it that much better. For many, this zero carb, zero sugar coffee is all that’s needed for an invigorating breakfast. The fat provides much-needed energy without any carbs or sugar to spike the blood sugar first thing in the morning. Plus, it gives the digestive system a longer break in between meals.

Brew coffee as usual. Pour into a mug and add grass-fed butter or ghee. Grass fed butter contains butyric acid which is anti-inflammatory and improves overall gut health. Next, add MCT oil or powder. MCTs (medium chain triglycerides) are very quickly broken down by our bodies and turned into energy to fuel our brains and muscles. Use coconut based MCT oils to be more environmentally friendly. And, for those sensitive to oils, MCT oil powders are a great alternative. Add in heavy cream, as much as you like. The benefit of heavy cream is you get all the fat and creaminess without any carbs or sugar. For an optional dose of sweetness, I recommend liquid stevia drops. This all-natural plant-based sweetener comes in a variety of flavors.
For a more flavorful coffee, try brewing Defiant Coffee using your favorite French press. We’ve found that presses make for a more flavorful cup and will ensure that the extracts or collagen are not being filtered out. We recommend two tablespoons of ground coffee to eight ounces of water at 195 degrees, with a three-minute steep time. For an even frothier experience, blend your coffee in a heat safe blender. Ronnie Watson is CEO and founder of Defiant Coffee Company, which offers a Collagen and Mushroom blend coffee that includes the highest quality, bioavailable ingredients.
