“Necessity is the mother of invention. A need or problem encourages creative effort to meet the need or solve the problem.” ~ Plato “At seventeen, I enlisted in the Marine Corps. At Camp Lejeune, I drank water contaminated with carcinogenic substances which gave me cancer. The Chemotherapy destroyed the cartilage in my cervical spine. The pain became so intense, I felt I would not be able to work much longer as a Physical Therapist.

Hence, the creation of Chazael Lotion.” Kevin Sgroi, PT Creator of Chazael Lotion
“Chazael lotion is amazing! After being shot six times on March 6, 2016, nothing helped alleviate the severe swelling in my feet until my physical therapist gave me this lotion. He said it works equally well in relieving the symptoms of arthritis, muscle spasms, and increasing flexibility in joints plagued by arthritis. Please try this product!”

“When someone would say ‘make a fist’ I could only chuckle and give them my flat hand with fingers slightly curved. One day, I was very blessed to be treated with Chazael Lotion! Now I can make a complete fist with my right hand and almost a complete one with my left. The greatest benefit of this lotion is being PAIN FREE!”
Kathleen P., Hayden “Chazael, the essential oil based serum used by Kevin in his physical therapy treatments, is nothing short of a miracle. It provides incredible relief to my swollen tissues, aching muscles and arthritic joints. To see the rest of my testimonial, go to Chazael-Lotion.com.”

Natural Awakenings Anniversary Celebration and Holistic Chamber of Commerce Information Session
N
atural Awakenings Inland Northwest is celebrating its one-year anniversary with a reception on November 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Lotus in Spokane. In addition, there will be an information session on a newly established Holistic Chamber of Commerce (HCC) networking group that is set to begin in January 2019. “I’m excited to finally be celebrating the one-year anniversary of the magazine which debuted in September 2017,” says Amber McKenzie, owner and publisher of Natural Awakenings Inland Northwest. “All are welcome to attend—readers, advertisers, partners, businesses—anyone who loves natural/holistic living and wants to socialize with other like-minded people. It’s going to be a fun time.” In addition, McKenzie looks forward to sharing information about the Holistic Chamber of Commerce commencing in January. Founded in October 2010, the HCC is an international trade organization with chapters and members all over the U.S. and Canada and is tailored to professionals, practitioners, business owners and resource providers that are focused on connecting healthier people for a healthier planet. “After visiting several networking groups over the past year, I noticed the need for a dedicated group that catered specifically to health and wellness practitioners whose approach to care was more holistic in nature,” explains McKenzie. “I also found that practitioners were seeking opportunities for sharing and learning what others in connected fields are doing and felt the HCC Inland Northwest chapter would be the ideal group to educate, connect and build referrals. I also want to implement a business education component where presenters familiar with holistic health and wellness businesses can come to meetings to share ‘hacks’ on business development, marketing, website, social media and more – valuable information we as businesses would benefit from.” Location: 225 East Sprague Ave. in downtown Spokane. Cost: Free. For more information or to RSVP, call or text 509-869-4361 or email Amber@inwAwakenings.com. For more information about HCC, visit HolisticChamberOfCommerce.com.

Grey relocated to Spokane from the California Bay Area where he completed his doctoral chiropractic degree and training. “Prior to pursuing chiropractic education, I worked at several healthcare startups in the San Francisco area with the goal of improving patient care,” explains Grey. “Through this work, I realized I wanted to have a more direct contribution in the Joshua Grey, DC healing outcomes of others which is why I decided to go back to school for chiropractic and specialize in upper cervical care.” Grey says he was also inspired by his mother’s own transformation with chiropractic care. “Because of my mom’s success with chiropractic, I am happy to empower parents through my work allowing them to have the energy and adaptability necessary to meet the demands of being a busy parent and living a complete life,” says Grey. Outside of the office, Grey is training for a triathlon, helping his husband renovate their home, and preparing for his first winter in the Inland Northwest. New Minister at Church of Truth in Coeur d’Alene
I
n October, the Church of Truth in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, welcomed new minister, Reverend Dennis Ashley, to their congregation. Ashley is replacing retiring Reverend Mary Jane Morical, who has been the minister there for 37 years. “Reverend Mary Jane Morical started at Mary Jane Morical and Dennis Ashley Church of Truth in 1981 and in her 37 years at the helm, she has touched the lives of thousands of people,” shares Ashley. “Blessed with great insight and a sharp sense of humor, she has inspired people to be more than they ever thought possible. She will be missed, of course, but at age 87 retirement called to her.” The Church of Truth offers spiritual teachings and believes there are many pathways to God, and that no church has the whole truth, but each has a piece of it. Another foundational principal states that “all people are filled with the Spirit of God, but most don’t yet know or believe it. We help people search for their connection to the Spirit of God within.” Ashley is honored to carry on the legacy Morical started decades ago and holds a strong vision for the church. “I want to be a church that honors and cherishes all people with their unique differences and talents,” Ashley says. “And I want our Sunday services and classes throughout the week to challenge the intellect and cultivate the heart. Our search for God takes both heart and mind and we want to emphasize both.” The Church of Truth is currently a small congregation, but Ashley envisions it growing year after year. “I’m encouraging anyone who is interested to come join us,” enthuses Ashley. “Be a part of something that is going to unfold by letting your heart and consciousness be one of the forces that shape its very being. Find out more about yourself, your relationship to God, and while you’re at it - have fun!” Location: 523 E. Garden in Coeur d’Alene. Services are Sunday at 11 a.m. For more information, email IdahoChurchOfTruth@gmail.com or visit IdahoChurchOfTruth.com.

Scream Cream Helps Women Achieve Orgasm Despite its fun-sounding nickname, Scream Cream is a serious libido enhancing medication prescribed by doctors and naturopaths to help women improve their sexual arousal and chances of attaining orgasm. Scream Cream is a transdermal compounded vaginal cream made up of three medicinal components that include a sex enhancing hormone, a bronchodilator and two vasodilators, which include Aminophyllin, L-Arginine and Sildenafil-citrate. The main function of these ingredients is to improve blood flow around the area of application. It also improves the sensitivity of genitals and increases chances of orgasmic arousal. Studies show that sexual desire and responsiveness differ between men and women. Men tend to be more physiologically aroused and desire is often tied to this stimulation. Whereas with women, sexual desire is often more psychological and situational in nature and is influenced by numerous factors including feelings about themselves, their bodies, and the quality of their relationship with their partner. In addition, women often experience desire after they are genitally aroused, which may require an extended period of foreplay. Scream Cream has been designed with these factors in mind. Its transdermal properties allow it to be absorbed easily through the skin and limit its active effects exclusively to the clitoris and other areas of the vagina. There are many other factors affecting libido and sexual health, such as hormone levels, stress, depression and other mental and physical health issues. As such, it is important to talk with your doctor or naturopath to find out if Scream Cream is right for you. You can also contact Sixth Avenue Medical Pharmacy, a locally-owned compounding pharmacy serving the Inland Northwest which has been compounding medications for over 50 years. The pharmacy works closely with several doctors, naturopaths and alternative health providers in Washington and Idaho to formulate customized solutions for each customer. Inland Wellness & Vitality A Sustainable Approach to Health Care by Sheila Julson
I
nland Wellness & Vitality, located in Spokane, specializes in sexual health and age management services for men and women. Opened this past February by Dr. Jacob Deakins and his brother, Peter Deakins, a registered nurse, Inland Wellness & Vitality strives to reach an underserved population often overlooked by conventional health professionals. “It’s a concierge environment where people can open up about their health concerns, particularly in regards to sexual health,” Jacob says. “It’s something that most practitioners typically don’t ask about, but we feel very comfortable discussing because of its implication on overall health—increased mood, blood pressure, energy and zest for life all plays into whether one has a functional and fulfilling sex life.” The clinic has a comfortable ambiance with home-like furnishings. Patients are offered snacks, water and espresso, and because Inland Wellness & Vitality does not overbook, there’s generally little-to-no appointment overlap. Patients receive the full attention of practitioners with 30-or 60-minute appointments. Jacob had previously served as a primary care and family medicine physician in private practice. He also worked in urgent care and provided emergency room coverage at a critical access hospital in a rural setting. Peter has been a registered nurse since 2011. Prior to that, he had worked in medicine and acute dialysis care, and in cardiac intensive care units. Peter came up with the concept for a men’s health clinic when, through a local podcast, he heard about GAINSWave,

a state-of-the-art therapy designed to improve erectile dysfunction. No other providers in the Inland Northwest region were offering the service. GAINSWave, a fairly new therapy in the U.S., uses an acoustic wave to help improve erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the penis by removing plaque that develops in the vascular vessels over time. GAINSWave also releases growth factors to create new blood vessels, which brings blood flow to the erection by releasing nitric oxide in the arteries. “It’s really multi-factorial; there’s no downtime, no side effects, and we can perform that therapy on all men,” Jacob says. The non-invasive office procedure requires no anesthesia, and patients typically receive six to 12 treatments. For women, childbirth, hormonal changes and menopause can loosen vaginal walls, leading to incontinence and de-

creased sexual pleasure. Inland Wellness & Vitality offers Viveve therapy for women: a cryogen-cooled monopolar radiofrequency (CMRF) directed intravaginally to increase vascularity and lubrication in the vaginal canal. It can regenerate vaginal tissue, thus increasing sexual pleasure and reducing urinary incontinence. Viveve is an office-based procedure requiring no anesthesia. Jacob notes that while many competitors use a laser device that has to be repeatedly inserted and withdrawn, leading to discomfort, Viveve is a non-laser therapy with cooling energy that penetrates deeper into layers of the vaginal canal. “A common analogy I use is that it’s like doing a thousand Kegel exercises in 30 minutes,” he says. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections are also used in conjunction with GAINSWave and Viveve therapy. With PRP therapy, a patient’s blood is drawn and then centrifuged to separate the platelets from the plasma portion, and then concentrated into that platelet rich portion and injected. While not a true stem cell, PRP acts like a stem cell to stimulate growth and healing factors. This cutting-edge therapy has been shown to increase blood flow and help improve Peyronie’s disease, a condition in which scarring causes inability to have erections or causes painful, curved erections. For women, PRP can be directed into the clitoris and vagina, increasing lubrication, sensitivity and blood flow. Inland Wellness & Vitality also addresses pain from injuries. The acoustic wave therapy has been extensively used in

Europe and Canada by physical therapists. It directs bursts of energy pulses to an area of injury, stimulating muscular and ligamentous tissue to promote healing. “We’ve had great success with acoustic wave therapy and have treated all kinds of musculoskeletal issues,” Peter said. The Deakins brothers lead active, healthy lifestyles and believe in practicing what they preach. Their office has an integrative health coach on staff to assist patients with meal plans. Jacob and Peter also make lifestyle and diet recommendations to help improve overall wellness and decrease dependence on pharmacologic medications. “People are clamoring for this model of care because the voice of the patient has really been lost among the pharmaceutical industry, big health care systems and even the physicians, who, to no fault of their own, have very little time to counsel patients about diet, nutrition or sexual health,” Jacob says. “There are a lot of trends and fads and quick-fix programs out there, but we want to focus on sustainable, practical solutions.” Inland Wellness & Vitality is located at 316 W. Boone Ave., Ste. 350, Rock Pointe Tower, in Spokane. For more information, call 509-474-0145 or visit InlandWellnessAndVitality.com. See ad, page 3. W
hen it comes to our food and the benefits received, Mother Nature has a funny way of giving us hints as to how that food will help us. It’s as though she is trying to show us the benefits based on the look of the plant, fruit, fungus, nut, etc. For example, walnuts are good for the brain, celery helps with bone strength, tomatoes reduce heart disease and oysters are great for male and female reproductive organs. With that said, cordyceps, with its phallic-like appearance, are no exception to this rule. What are cordyceps? They are a fascinating type of parasitic fungus that invade various species of insects and eventually replace the host tissue with the fungus’ mycelium, to which the elongated fruit body of the fungus then grows out of the body or head of the unfortunate insect. Crazy, but fortunately for us, these funguses cannot invade the human body, and in fact, have amazing superfood health benefits. Some of the most sought-after benefits of cordyceps are their ability to increase libido, stamina and circulation, all which come in handy in the bedroom. One of the key active ingredients of cordyceps is adenosine, a nucleic acid which is a crucial component of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a high-energy molecule that stores the energy we need to do pretty much everything. Each action we perform gets the energy it requires for operation directly from stored ATP. Cordyceps significantly boost our body’s ability to produce this important, energy-giving ATP, which is why it’s considered a superfood darling for everyone from athletes looking to boost their
stamina and performance to the elderly seeking to stay active. I t also serves as an effective stimulant, giving a boost similar to caffeine but minus the jittery, sleepdepriving side effects. Cordyceps have also been shown to boost testosterone levels, which are crucial for supporting maximum muscle growth. That’s because cordyceps contains a number of nucleosides like deoxyuridine, thymidine, hypoxanthine and adenosine which play a key role in producing energy and enhancing blood flow. These nucleosides also provide the body with several essential amino acids and sterols that help maintain the elasticity of channels where blood flows through, such as blood vessels, veins and arteries. For those looking for a little extra boost in the sack, add some of this phallic fungus to your diet and watch your energy and stamina levels increase. Ronnie Watson is CEO and founder of Defiant Coffee Company, which offers a Mushroom blend coffee that includes the highest quality cordyceps, lion’s mane and chaga mushrooms. GAINSWave Therapy
A Breakthrough Solution to Erectile Dysfunction
G
AINSWave has emerged as a scientifically proven therapy that uses high frequency acoustic waves to increase blood flow to the penis, helping men seeking better erections and optimal sexual performance. Widely used throughout Europe and Canada, GAINSWave is now available in the United States at clinics including Inland Wellness & Vitality, owned by Peter Deakins and Dr. Jacob Deakins. Over 50 percent of men experience difficulties in the bedroom as they age, due to deteriorating blood vessels in the penis. Microplaque forms, decreasing blood flow and leading to erectile dysfunction. But GAINSWave’s non-invasive, high frequency acoustic waves therapy breaks up that hindering micro-plaque in the blood vessels, while also stimulating the growth of new blood vessels. The improved blood flow helps obtain stronger and more sustainable erections. Men are reporting remarkable results in the bedroom and an improved outlook on life, as local resident and Inland Wellness & Vitality patient “D.L.” states: D.L.: “My sexuality began to decline, not due to lack of desire between my wife and I, but the duties of work and parenting that kept us both exhausted with little spare energy. I began researching the different options for erectile dysfunction and
decided to try GAINSWave treatments. From the very start of my interactions with Peter and Dr. Deakins, it has been an incredible experience of education and personal growth. I was so excited Before After about the positive life enhancing changes of the GAINSWave treatments, I also embarked on a hormone optimization program with Dr. Deakins. After building up my courage through researching the topic further, and many discussions with Peter and Dr. Deakins, I was ready to move forward. The GAINSWave treatments resulted in an increased blood flow to my penis that produced more surface veins, which enhanced both visual appeal and texture. The addition of the platelet rich plasma (PRP) shot increased the fullness and firmness of my erections. I have experienced enhanced ability to control ejaculation and nighttime urination. I am very pleased with the physical results of the GAINSWave treatments. The results I am experiencing include increases in mental sharpness, libido and energy, as well as weight loss. My sexual energy has increased from not having enough energy to even consider having sex, to thinking about it all the time and enjoying every moment of it. I certainly would not want to be in this situation without my wife. Thankfully she likes being the root of my desire, and my increased libido has added a fun, flirtatious spark of energy to our relationship that we have greatly enjoyed!”

5 Tips for Better Spinal Health by Kim White Avoid leaning your head forward. In this world of electronics, you really need to limit your screen time and be conscious of your posture. Get up often from your desk, even just to move your body for a few seconds. To prevent forward head carriage, make sure to drink a lot of water; it makes you get up often from your desk. Also, be sure to stretch out your chest for at least one minute at a time. The doorway stretch consists of hands on outside of doorway, biceps parallel to floor while pushing through with one leg forward while opening up those chest muscles. Eat lots of greens. Oxidative stress is one of the major contributors to the aging process. So be sure to eat lots of green plants. They’re loaded with antioxidants to combat oxidative stress. The leafier the greens are, the better they are for you. Keep your spinal discs hydrated. Each day you should be drinking half your body weight in ounces. For example: If you weigh 150 pounds, you should be drinking 75 ounces every day. Also, smoking and being overweight are major contributors to disc degeneration. Lastly, avoid long periods of sitting. Walking around the block and moving during commercial breaks are small ways to implement change. Stay flexible, or get there. Stretching out your back, legs and hips can help you gain more flexibility, which in turn leads to more functional spinal movement. Massage and yoga are very helpful in opening up your muscles. Strengthen your core. Most fitness trainers and medical professionals will agree that strengthening the core is important. Why? Because your core provides stability to your spine. Stability in your spine means you would be less likely to have your “back go out” on you or to have a disc bulge. My favorite exercises for spinal stability are “Quadruped/Bird-Dog,” “Dead Bug,” and any single leg balancing exercises. You could look any of these up online or ask your chiropractor or physical therapist for exercises that would be appropriate for you. Kim White, DC, owns Intelligent Balance Spinal Care which specializes in upper cervical chiropractic care. The office is located at 2310 N. Molter Rd. Ste. 108, in Liberty Lake. Sexual Health for Overall Wellness by Jacob Deakins
S
exual health is paramount for overall wellness. Sex tends to be a topic that is uncomfortable for patients and practitioners alike. Very seldom is sexual wellness discussed unless the patient has something wrong such as erectile dysfunction or pain and even then, the conversation can be awkward. This should not be the case. Sexual wellness is a topic than encompasses a multitude of areas, but all are vital for overall health. These range from hormonal, biochemical, physical and emotional. These areas should each be addressed independently,
but also considered as a complex and well-maintained apparatus within each of us. We all know that sex is fun and pleasurable, but will it make us live longer? Let’s look at the research. The Caerphilly Cohort Study from English researchers looked at 918 Welsh men ages 45 to 59 enrolled from 1979 to 1983 and then re-evaluated them 10 years later. They found that 150 of the men then aged 55 to 69 had died. The researchers correlated the sexual frequency of those who died and those who survived and found that the group that had

sex twice a week had half the death rate of those who died who had only reported having sex once a month. The study concluded, after adjustment for other factors, that men who had more frequent orgasms lived longer and had a protective effect on health. Critics argued that perhaps there were other factors, but the more sexually active group did not appear to be any healthier at baseline than those who died. For the entire group, risk of death decreased with the increase in sexual frequency. Another study looked at 100 women who had suffered from a heart attack and 100 women who had not. The women who had experienced a heart attack reported decreased satisfaction with their sex lives prior to their heart attack. This likely speaks to the hormonal aspect of decreased libido as well as the negative cardiac effects of hormonal deprivation in menopausal and other women who are lacking adequate levels. The Nurse’s Health study observed decreased death from heart disease and cancer in estrogen only users. Sex is great exercise, helps decrease stress, allows partner bonding, trust building and boosts the immune system. A study done at Wilkes University surveyed 111 young adults regarding their sexual frequency and found that those having sex most often had higher levels of salivary IgA a key component of the immune system, particularly in the lining of the gut, preventing dangerous pathogens from gaining entry. Physical barriers to sex may include vaginal dryness and atrophy along with discomfort in women and erectile dysfunction or Peyronie’s disease, an oftenpainful contracture of the penis in men. These physical barriers can be addressed using therapies that do not include invasive surgery or potentially dangerous medications. Acoustic wave therapy or “GAINSWave” utilizes sound energy for erectile dysfunction, focused on improving blood flow and stimulating the release of chemicals that dilate the vessels. Likewise, women can see benefits in vaginal
laxity, lubrication and comfort, as well as reduction in stress urinary incontinence with the Viveve therapy. These therapies are office-based and have great outcomes. Hormonal loss of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone contribute as well. Estrogen plays a vital role in both men and women for arousal, libido and lubrication. Studies published in the Annals of Endocrinology in 2004 show that when the conversion of testosterone to estradiol (part of testosterone’s natural pathway) was blocked men suffered more erectile dysfunction, decreased masturbation, intercourse and sexual fantasies. Just like men may benefit from some estrogen, women likewise may see improvement in sexual health and function with small amounts of testosterone. The process of evaluating and treating hormone deficiency should be addressed and monitored by a practitioner knowledgeable of the complexity in order to create a plan that works for each individual. This can be accomplished by using bioidentical hormones which are recognized, utilized and metabolized like our own hormones. These hormones are typically compounded by local compounding pharmacies who are very knowledgeable about these therapies. By addressing each patient as a unique individual, hormonal balance can be achieved with great success. There are a multitude of reasons why sexual health is so important and by focusing on diet, lifestyle and hormone replacement therapy we can continue to enjoy sex well into life all while enjoying the associated health benefits. Jacob Deakins, M.D., of Inland Wellness and Vitality at 316 W. Boone Ave., Ste. 350, Rock Pointe Tower in Spokane, offers natural therapies for sexual health. Five Common Libido Killers
Birth Control Pills: Oral contraceptives can boost levels of sex hormonebinding globulin, which attaches to desire-promoting testosterone, making it harder for the body to access it. Antidepressants: Numerous antidepressant medications have been shown to decrease libido, but leaving depression untreated can kill sex drive even more; consider natural alternatives. Smoking: It impairs circulation to genitals. Alcohol: Too much alcohol lowers sexual response. Caffeine: Excess caffeine can erode levels of testosterone, which is vital for driving desire. Sources: Laurie Steelsmith, ND, and research studies
Nature’s LibidoEnhancers
L-arginine: Boosts blood flow to sexual organs. Can be taken in supplement form or applied topically. Chinese ginseng (Panax ginseng): Considered a sexual tonic in Chinese medicine for its ability to stabilize sexual energy over time; also used to address vaginal dryness. Epimedium (horny goat weed): Said to stimulate nerves in genitals, support adrenal glands and boost levels of feelgood brain chemicals. Phenylethylamine: Sometimes referred to as the “romance chemical”, this stimulant and mood elevator is naturally released in the brain when we have an orgasm, exercise or eat chocolate; also available in supplement form. Maca: A Peruvian root used for centuries in that country to promote sexual energy, Maca is said to boost production of libido-boosting hormones. Source: Laurie Steelsmith, ND

REBOOTING LIBIDO Exercise Rekindles Desire

ecause exercise delivers so many benefits, it’s not surprising that one of them is increased libido. A low sex drive can affect either gender at any age, and contributing factors include hormonal changes, daily stressors and certain prescription drugs. According to a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, shortduration bursts of exercise work to increase circulation and heart rate, thus amping up physiological arousal in
women. Sexual performance is enhanced in men by exercising three to five times a week, according to a study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior. “Eating right and being committed to a daily exercise regimen that includes strength, cardiovascular and flexibility training is key to maintaining a great libido and continual excellence in sexual function,” affirms Dr. Jeffry Life, author of The Life Plan: How Any Man Can Achieve Lasting Health, Great Sex,

Exercise increases testosterone, endorphins and adrenal hormones, all of which are essential to a satisfying sex life. Studies from the University of Texas at Austin show premenopausal women experience increased sexual response with exercise, including individuals with diminished sex drives due to the use of antidepressants. “Stress is one of the biggest libidokillers in women, and endorphins released during exercise can reduce stress, improve libido and increase arousal,” maintains Stephanie Mansour, fitness expert and CEO of Step It Up with Steph, in Chicago, Illinois. “Adding 30 minutes of exercise a few times a week can increase endorphins, blood flow and testosterone.”
The inevitable hormonal changes of menopause and beyond can dampen a woman’s sex life, but it doesn’t have to become a way of life. “Women can experience side effects of shifting hormonal levels which cause libido to vanish and the vagina to become dry, making us feel anything but empowered,” explains Ellen Dolgen, the Coronado, California, author of Menopause Mondays: The Girlfriend’s Guide to Surviving and Thriving During Perimenopause and Menopause. “Exercise, along with the guidance of a menopause

Life in our 40s, 50s and beyond can be wonderful!” Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a problem for many men, and can result from sedentary lifestyles, certain medications and cardiovascular issues. “ED is a huge problem worldwide, and vascular disease is one of the major causes,” says Life. “This can be avoided by eating properly and making exercise an essential part of everyday life, which can also reduce the need for prescription drugs that are another major cause of the problem.”
Strength Training and Yoga
Testosterone—a hormone that plays a significant role in lighting our “fire” and keeping it lit—can be enhanced by adding workouts with weights. “Strength training can boost testosterone, which may boost sex drive in both women and men. For men, I recommend lifting weights and doing push-ups. However, it’s important to note that too much intense exercise or strength training may have the opposite effect, and actually reduce the desire to have sex,” says Mansour. In addition to a daily exercise program that includes cardio and flexibility exercises, Life concurs, “Thirty to 60 minutes of strength training three to four times a week is ideal.” According to a review published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, yoga may increase both male endurance and female response. “Yoga turns off our sympathetic nervous system, the part that keeps us in ‘fight-or-flight’ response. Inversions like the shoulder stand help to harmonize hormones, supporting a well-balanced sex drive,” explains Pam Medina, owner of The Yoga Lily, in Clifton Park, New York. “We need to feel attractive, and yoga can help us to accept the body as a sacred vehicle for the soul.” No matter the age or condition of the body, a more satisfying sex life and better self-image is possible through feeling fit. Life reminds us, “Check with your doctor before taking up an exercise regimen, and know that maintaining a healthy body can give us essential ingredients for a great sex life well into our 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.” Maya Whitman is certified in bodywork and clinical essential oil therapy.
Fitness Warrants
BETTER SEX by Jenny Wiglesworth
I
t’s common knowledge that commitment to a regular fitness routine establishes a healthier lifestyle, but maybe not so common is the fact that it also creates a sexier lifestyle. Meaning, when we create a fitness routine that challenges specific muscles; we may experience a more active sexual life. Fitness routines that challenge the core muscles, in particular, are primary choices for a more active sex life. Think barre, Pilates, yoga and any abdominal exercises that specifically target the midsection as go-to exercises. These exercises challenge muscles, develop core breathing, and foundationally give support to other muscles throughout the body. Although other fitness routines may assist in developing a more active sexual life, it’s the ones centered on the core that work the best. Core muscles, also known as the powerhouse, support the entire body. When strengthened, these muscles provide balance, strength and flexibility throughout the center. This allows for the body to move more pliably, hold poses longer, and for those adventuresome in sexual pursuits, practice more challenging positions in the bedroom. Along with muscles, core fitness routines also provide breath control. With core breath control, we can work through positions, whether fitness or sexual, for extended periods of time. In barre, this is called the “power of the breath.” It’s amazing what our bodies can do when we allow our breath to work its magic. As we age, hormones and muscle loss can affect our sexual appetite. Through proper fitness routines, we can not only keep our sexual appetites alive, but also create a healthier stamina and attraction in doing so. Viveve Nonsurgical Therapy for Women’s Sexual Health by Sheila Julson
As women experience childbirth, menopause, fluctuations in weight or hormonal changes, the vaginal walls can become loose and dry, causing a loss of sexual pleasure, urinary incontinence, tampons slipping out, and other issues. Viveve, a nonsurgical vaginal tightening treatment that has been used successfully in 22 other countries, is becoming more readily available in the United States.
J
acob Deakins, M.D., who, along with his brother, registered nurse Peter Deakins, offers Viveve at Inland Wellness & Vitality. Their Spokane-based practice specializes in sexual health and age management services for men and women. “Viveve is a very exciting therapy that differs from what has been available traditionally,” says Jacob. Viveve uses a cryogen-cooled monopolar radiofrequency (CMRF) that heats vaginal tissue while cooling the surface. The Viveve probe is directed intravaginally to stimulate the body’s own renewal response to slowly restore collagen. This increases vascularity and lubrication, thus reducing laxity in the vaginal canal. The treatment also increases blood flow and regenerates vaginal tissue. Viveve is a one-time office-based procedure, and there’s no anesthesia required. Most women experience a sensation of heating and cooling during the treatment, but generally no pain or discomfort. The therapy takes less than 30 minutes, and patients can resume most regular activity afterward. Viveve differs from other vaginal treatments, modalities and devices in
that with its cooling technology, there’s deeper penetration of the device’s energy into the layers of the vaginal canal, which stimulates and gradually tightens the muscles—similar to Kegel exercises. Other treatments often have to be repeatedly inserted and withdrawn, which can be more uncomfortable and possibly cause tissue damage. Jacob says Viveve therapy is also good for women who have stress or urinary incontinence while laughing, sneezing or during high levels of activity like exercising. “This therapy has shown to be very successful in eliminating that,” he notes. Most women of all ages experiencing vaginal laxities are good candidates for Viveve therapy, except for those with pacemakers or defibrillators. Viveve Medical, Inc. has completed a randomized, blinded, multi-center clinical trial that has been published in peer-reviewed journals (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28161079) reporting the safety and efficacy of their CMRF device to treat vaginal laxity and improve sexual function. Viveve can also be used in conjunction with other women’s sexual health
treatments such as platelet rich plasma (PRP), in which a patient’s blood is drawn and then centrifuged to separate the platelets from the plasma portion, and then put into a concentrated preparation and injected. The PRP contains powerful growth factors that aid in the regeneration of tissues. PRP can be directed into the clitoris and vagina, increasing lubrication, sensitivity, blood flow and vaginal rejuvenation. Inland Wellness & Vitality, located at 316 W. Boone Ave., Ste. 350, Rock Pointe Tower in Spokane, is one of the only medical clinics in the Inland Northwest to offer Viveve therapy. For more information, call 509-474-0145 or visit InlandWellnessAndVitality.com. See Business Spotlight, page 10 and ad, page 3. gratefulness, gratitude and thanksgiving?
Gratefulness is a proactive orientation to life that originates inside. You wake with a sense of thankful awareness for the gift of another day, of all the miraculous things your body did overnight to keep you alive and healthy and an all-encompassing sense of the great fullness of life. Gratitude is more of a response to something going well; anything from receiving the perfect present to five green lights on the way home to beautiful weather. It can become an addictive pursuit to try to get life to deliver something positive again and again, whereas gratefulness emanates from a more unconditional core. Thanksgiving bubbles up when we’re so filled with a sense of gratefulness—that great fullness—that we overflow into finding ways to express thanks aloud and in actions, such as delivering praise or being of service.
In what way is happiness related to gratefulness?
The truth is that it’s not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy. We can have all the things that should make us happy, and that we wish would make us happy, but unless we feel grateful for what we have, it’s likely nothing will truly make us happy. Happiness can be susceptible to outside circumstance, whereas gratefulness is an orientation we can more consistently maintain.
How do we cultivate gratefulness as a way of being, rather than an intermittent feeling?
It’s a three-step process: stop, look and go. First, we pause to be present; slow down enough to notice all the things for which we can be grateful. Second, we enlarge our perspective
to take nothing for granted and acknowledge that life is short and uncertain, so we are grateful each day we wake up. This step is also about being aware of our privileges, starting with our ability to see, hear, move about and function. It keeps us aware, awake and alert. Consider how we feel when electricity returns after an outage or when we can use our hand or foot after a cast comes off. Within minutes, we can forget how appreciative we were for those things, so we need to build reminders into our lives. Third, we generate possibilities. Find ways to express appreciation or nurture something we care about by engaging in an actively grateful way. Even when we suffer hardship, shifting our awareness to notice whatever is sufficient, abundant and beautiful enables us to be grateful. This creates a ripple effect, bringing more reasons to be grateful. It’s a radical way to live.
Which other qualities of life that people now seek give you hope? It gives me hope when people seek contentment. Paradoxically, discontent gives me hope too, because when people recognize injustice and social biases, it pushes us to engage; to stand up and take note of what’s not okay and needs to be changed.
Love also gives me hope, especially when individuals seek to love more generously, inclusively and compassionately. It brings me the most hope of all when I see people building bridges and stretching their own capacity to love beyond their comfort zone. Coffee Company Defies the Ordinary with HEALTHY SUPERFOODS by Sheila Julson
R
onnie Watson, owner of Defiant Coffee, knows that getting older shouldn’t stop anyone from living life to its fullest. As an extreme sports enthusiast, he had endured his share of injuries, so he began taking better care of his body through measures such as following the high-fat, low-carb ketogenic diet, along with researching adaptogenic herbs that can help protect the body from the effects of chronic stress. Watson had also worked for a major energy drink company and became interested in creating his own brand of health beverage, yet he wanted to create something a little different. As a coffee drinker, he realized that there were very few companies adding medicinal mushroom extracts with coffee, so he combined the healing powers of nature with one of America’s favorite beverages and launched Defiant Coffee in June 2017. The two coffee blends he formulated, Mushroom Blend and Collagen Blend, are each roasted in small batches by a Spokane-based coffee roaster. The organic, fairly traded coffee beans are sourced directly from the GRAPOS farmers’ co-op, in Mexico. Defiant Coffee’s Mushroom Blend contains lion’s mane mushroom extract, which increases the body’s nerve growth factor and can help alleviate anxiety. “When that nerve growth factor is up, your anxiety is lower,” Watson explains. “With some coffees, you have that head energy, but you’re still kind of anxious and can’t focus on one task. The lion’s mane gets rid of anxiety, but you still 24

Ronnie Watson have energy and cognitive focus.” Also included in the mushroom blend are cordyceps, which Watson says is commonly used by athletes because they help with oxygen utilization, improve the respiratory system and increase the body’s ability to produce a natural energy with no short energy spikes. Cordyceps has also been shown to revitalize physical stamina, increase lung capacity, improve libido and help build muscle mass. Chaga mushrooms, dubbed “the king of herbs,” are immune modulators that increase the body’s production of superoxide dismutase (SOD), thus acting as a powerful antioxidant. Watson notes that chaga can also help lower blood sugar. Watson sources 100 percent organic mushroom extracts taken only from the fruiting body of the fungus. “Some growers that produce mushrooms for extracts
inwAwakenings.com
grow mycelium on grain logs, and when the log is ground up, you end up with grain and starch, and not 100 percent real mushroom extracts,” he warns. The Collagen Blend includes a highly bioavailable form of grass-fed collagen that aids new cell growth, thus replenishing cells lost due to aging. “Environmental toxins can also break down natural collagen protein, which is the most abundant protein in nails, skin and joints,” Watson says. “Collagen can also improve gut health by increasing intestinal lining. It’s also good for joint flexibility and support, and it promotes deeper sleep.” Watson wanted to create coffee blends that are not only healthful but also taste great. “You cannot taste or even see the mushrooms in the coffee,” he assures to anyone who might think that the Mushroom Blend tastes like mushrooms. “It’s more on the earthy side, with slightly sweet, vanilla notes. If you didn’t know the extracts were in there, you’d think it was just a good, robust coffee.” Defiant Coffee has been well received, Watson says, and many customers have told him how they noticed improved health after drinking the coffees regularly. “I’ve also heard from some people who normally can’t drink coffee because of stomach issues, but they’ve found that Defiant Coffee doesn’t upset their stomachs like other coffee,” he says. “It’s also smooth and subtle, and people who normally don’t drink coffee black will drink these blends straight.” Defiant Coffee’s Mushroom and Collagen blends are available online or at retail locations including Pilgrim’s Market, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Price for one pound of Defiant Coffee Collagen Blend: $16; Mushroom Blend: $22. For more information or to order, visit DefiantCoffee.co, coupon code: awaken. See Resource Guide listing, page 31. DEFIANT COFFEE 2.0 RECIPE by Ronnie Watson
For many people, this zero carb, zero sugar, good fat-only coffee is all that’s needed for an invigorating breakfast. The fat provides muchneeded energy without any carbs or sugar to spike the blood sugar first thing in the morning. Plus, it gives your digestive system a longer break in between meals. Ingredients: • Defiant Coffee Mushroom or Collagen Blend • 1 tablespoon grass-fed butter or ghee • 1 tablespoon MCT oil or MCT oil powder • Heavy cream • Liquid stevia (optional) Brew coffee as usual. Once brewed, pour into mug, or heat safe blender, and add
grass-fed butter or ghee. Grass-fed butter contains butyric acid which is antiinflammatory and improves overall gut health. Next, add MCT oil or powder. MCTs (medium chain triglycerides) are very quickly broken down by our bodies and turned into energy to fuel our brains and muscles. Use coconut based MCT oils to be more environmentally friendly. For those sensitive to oils, MCT
oil powders are a great alternative. Add in heavy cream, as much as you like. The benefit of heavy cream is you get all the fat and creaminess without any carbs or sugar. For an optional dose of sweetness, I recommend liquid stevia drops. This allnatural plant-based sweetener comes in a variety of flavors. For a more flavorful coffee, try brewing Defiant Coffee using your favorite French press. We’ve found that presses make for a more flavorful cup and will ensure that the extracts or collagen are not being filtered out. We recommend two tablespoons of ground coffee to eight ounces of water at 195 degrees, with a three-minute steep time. For an even frothier experience, blend everything in a heat safe blender. Ronnie Watson is CEO and founder of Defiant Coffee Company. For more information or to purchase the Mushroom or Collagen blend, visit DefiantCoffee.co, coupon code: awaken.
