“Necessity is the mother of invention. A need or problem encourages creative effort to meet the need or solve the problem.” ~ Plato “At seventeen, I enlisted in the Marine Corps. At Camp Lejeune, I drank water contaminated with carcinogenic substances which gave me cancer. The Chemotherapy destroyed the cartilage in my cervical spine. The pain became so intense, I felt I would not be able to work much longer as a Physical Therapist.

Hence, the creation of Chazael Lotion.” Kevin Sgroi, PT Creator of Chazael Lotion
“Chazael lotion is amazing! After being shot six times on March 6, 2016, nothing helped alleviate the severe swelling in my feet until my physical therapist gave me this lotion. He said it works equally well in relieving the symptoms of arthritis, muscle spasms, and increasing flexibility in joints plagued by arthritis. Please try this product!”

“When someone would say ‘make a fist’ I could only chuckle and give them my flat hand with fingers slightly curved. One day, I was very blessed to be treated with Chazael Lotion! Now I can make a complete fist with my right hand and almost a complete one with my left. The greatest benefit of this lotion is being PAIN FREE!”
Kathleen P., Hayden “Chazael, the essential oil based serum used by Kevin in his physical therapy treatments, is nothing short of a miracle. It provides incredible relief to my swollen tissues, aching muscles and arthritic joints. To see the rest of my testimonial, go to Chazael-Lotion.com.”

ichelle Phay, owner and licensed massage therapist at Shalom Massage and Wellness, begins a Refuge Recovery group that meets every Monday from 6 to 7 p.m. in her wellness center located in downtown Spokane. “Refuge Recovery is a non-profit organization grounded in the belief that Buddhist principles and practices create a strong foundation for a path to freedom from addiction,” the RefugeRecovery.org website explains. “This is an approach to recovery that understands: All individuals have the power and potential to free themselves from the suffering that is caused by addiction.” Phay, who is also a nurse and yoga instructor, has always has a passion to help people along on their road to recovery. “I started this Monday evening group because I believe there are many paths to recovery, and as human beings in a messy world, we are all recovering from something,” she explains. “Recovery can be from a variety of things: drugs, alcohol, perfectionism, a bad attitude. Honestly, most of us simply need to recover from life.” As a massage therapist, Phay finds that using therapeutic touch is a beneficial way to invite an individual to connect with their body, soul and spirit. “The sensations of the body and the authentic feelings of the soul propel us to a place where recovery is possible utilizing modalities such as massage, yoga, meditation and group work. As we become aware of the sensations physically, emotionally and spiritually, we are able to connect the feelings associated with our body and begin the process of creating a sense of well-being, leading to the potential to start the recovery process.”
olistic Festivals presents their fall festival being held October 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at CenterPlace at Mirabeau Bill Homann Point Park in Spokane Valley. Admission is $6, and includes over 50 booths, free lectures, and a special hour-long presentation on the Mitchell-Hedges Crystal Skull. Co-sponsors of the bi-yearly Holistic Festivals, Sybil Vaughn and Cindy Gardner, had a vision in 2003 to offer education and presentations on alternative healing modalities to the public. “Our original goal was to offer an educational and fun day to the public at a reasonable cost that allowed people to talk directly with local alternative healing professionals in our area to learn more about various modalities and natural products,” says Vaughn. “Our festivals have chiropractors, acupuncturists, readers, healers, hypnotherapists, massage therapists and energy workers as well as new alternative technologies and health scans, EMF devices, essential oils, herbs, weight loss, detox, aura pictures, books, art, jewelry, crystals, gifts and more.” In addition, Vaughn and Gardner are excited to announce a presentation by Bill Homann, the guardian of the MitchellHedges Skull, which was made from a single piece of quartz crystal and weighs 11 pounds, 7 ounces. “For over 80 years, the Mitchell-Hedges Crystal Skull has been regarded as an archeological treasure, a technological marvel and sacred artifact. It is proclaimed to be one of the 13 Crystal Skulls in the Mayan Skull prophesies,” says Gardner. “In a special one-hour lecture being held at 12:30 p.m., Bill will talk about this ‘Skull of Love,’ share the story of the adventurer Mitchell-Hedges and take the audience on a guided meditation with the Skull.” In addition to the lecture, private sessions with the Crystal Skull will also be available at the festival.

osie Michaelis, owner of Spokane Mindfulness, is holding a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) ceremony and guided meditation on November 2 at 6 p.m. at The Lotus in Spokane. “Dia de los Muertos is a time-honored tradition where we can come together as a community to grieve, heal and remember lost loved ones,” says Michaelis, a certified meditation instructor. “It is not a mournful commemoration but a happy and lively celebration where we can honor the souls who have passed and celebrate all the joy they brought to those around them. It is also a time to contemplate our own mortality and be open to appreciating what’s truly important in life.” Dia de los Muertos has a long history in the Mexican tradition and is celebrated across the globe from October 31 to November 2. “For many, fall is a time of sweaters, boots and all things pumpkin spice. For others, it is a reminder of another fast approaching holiday season without a loved one,” Michaelis says. “This intimate ceremony is for anyone who has lost a loved one and will include a healing 30-minute guided meditation, traditional Dia de Muertos food offerings followed by a beautiful ‘love note’ balloon release. All guests are welcome to bring a small memento of their beloved to place on the ‘ofrenda’ table that will be returned at the end of the event.” Cost of event is $18. Location: 225 E. Sprague Ave., Spokane. Space is limited. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit SpokaneMindfulness.com/workshops or call 208-964-3600.

DA Power Yoga opened its doors last month in the trendy Riverstone community in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The spacious studio is owned and operated by married couple Michelle and Kyle Cooper, both army veterans, and offers warm vinyasa flow and power Baptiste yoga classes. In celebration of their grand opening, the studio is offering 14 days of yoga for $14 for new students. Beyoutiful Hot Yoga Opens Studios in Spokane Valley and Coeur d’Alene
T
he owners of Beyoutiful Hot Yoga, Wes and Mimi Vimont, are excited to announce the opening of two new hot yoga studios in Spokane Valley and Coeur d’Alene this fall, as well as an additional kids’ yoga studio, also in Coeur d’Alene. “We opened our first hot yoga studios in Wenatchee in 2012 where we still have two locations, and then expanded to the South Hill and Northside of Spokane,” explains Wes. “And now in an effort to better serve our region, we are opening a studio in Ironwood Square in Coeur d’Alene and another off Argonne in the Spokane Valley.” The Coeur d’Alene location will offer a variety of hot yoga classes and will also include Home Grown Kids Yoga which provides kids classes that range from 50 to 75 minutes, depending on age. The first Home Grown Kids Yoga studio opened on the South Hill in Spokane one year ago. “I saw the need of parents wanting to practice yoga in our South Hill studio, but were unable to due to lack of childcare,” says Mimi. “Rather than create a childcare center, I wanted to create something fun and just for kids. We are so happy to be opening another Home Grown Kids Yoga studio in Coeur d’Alene.” In addition to hot yoga classes, the Spokane Valley location will also have designated space for the Beyoutiful School of Hot Yoga teacher training program. “We have been doing hot yoga teacher training for years and our new Spokane Valley location will have a purpose-built classroom style studio designed to enhance the environment for learning and provide full-time use of a studio to develop the skills to teach yoga,” says Wes. “We offer two tracks to become certified, allowing prospective teachers to choose an RYT-200 certification in hatha or power/vinyasa style.” New Locations: 1437 N. GAINSWave Therapy Naturally Treats Erectile Dysfunction Erectile Dysfunction, or ED as it is commonly known, is a worsening of blood flow in the penis and is a common problem that affects one out of 10 men globally. Men who seek help for ED are often prescribed Before After oral medications which only address the symptoms rather than the underlying issue. There are other ways to treat ED, including GAINSWave, a safe, non-invasive medical therapy that applies high frequency, low intensity acoustical waves to the male genitals to help improve blood flow to the penis. The sound waves repair aged blood vessels, stimulate growth of new blood vessels, and remove decades of micro-plaque. The GAINSWave procedure has few side effects and allows for men with pre-existing medical conditions to receive safe treatment. GAINSWave is based on a series of over 40 clinical studies which have demonstrated a greater than 75 percent success rate in treating Erectile Dysfunction. Jacob Deakins, MD, of Inland Wellness and Vitality at 316 W. Boone Ave., Ste. 350 Rock Pointe Tower in Spokane offers GAINSWave Therapy. For more information regarding improved sexual health and GAINWaves treatment, contact 509-474-0145 or visit InlandWellnessAndVitality.com. See ad, page 3.

Top Health Benefits of Camelina Oil Extracted from the seeds of the Camelina sativa plant, camelina oil has recently gained national attention as a potential superfood oil. Here’s why: Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Compared to other popular oils on the market, camelina has an abundance of omega-3 fatty acids. The typical American diet tends to offer more omega-6 oils than omega-3, which is an issue because over-consumption of omega-6 has been linked to inflammation, cancer and heart disease. More omega-3s helps to combat inflammation, improve brain health and prevent heart disease. High in Vitamin E. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which is not only beneficial to overall health, but also prevents the oil from going rancid. Rancidity often happens when oils are heated past their smoke point. Camelina oil has a high heat point of 475 degrees, making it ideal for cooking. Helps Control Cholesterol. Camelina oil contains sterols, which have been shown to inhibit cholesterol absorption. This potent oil is also filled with polyunsaturated fats, which are essential for healthy cell function. One research study indicated that adding camelina oil to participants’ diet reduced blood cholesterol levels. Arthritis. Camelina oil can be applied topically to reduce inflammation, pain and joint swelling common in arthritis. Regular consumption of the oil can reduce overall inflammation thanks to the omega-3 fatty acids. Great for Skin, Hair, Eyes, Brain and Nerves. Camelina can be used as a massage oil for the skin, as well as a hot oil treatment for the scalp and hair. The vitamin E and omega-3s are great for both skin and hair and helps reduce dry skin and dandruff. When taken orally, it helps to keep the eyes, brain and nerves healthy. Camelina oil can be found in natural, specialty and organic markets across the Inland Northwest, including the Garland Mercantile at 823 W. Garland Ave., Spokane. The Garland Mercantile sells Camelina Gold oil which is locally produced on a non-GMO, family-owned farm outside Ritzville, Washington. Corporate Conscience Leading Food Companies Aim to Slash Energy Footprints
McDonald’s plans to reduce greenhouse emissions from their restaurants, corporate offices and supply chain by more than 30 percent by 2030. They’re the first restaurant chain with goals backed by the Science Based Targets initiative. The company expects to decrease its total emissions by more than 150 million tons. AB InBev, the parent company of Anheuser-Busch and Budweiser beer, has ambitious plans to purchase electricity only from renewable sources for its worldwide operations in seven years. The first step includes Bud Light. The goal is for all operations in the company’s 12 Budweiser breweries across the U.S. to be powered by renewable energy. Budweiser plants outside the U.S. will also switch to all-renewable energy, with all products planned to transition by 2025. The new status will be denoted by the label “100% Renewable Energy”.

Plastic Bag Deterrents Working in European Waters
A new study shows that there are significantly fewer plastic bags on the seafloor since a number of European countries introduced fees on them, according to a 25year study from the UK government’s Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS). Researchers saw an estimated 30 percent drop in the number of plastic bags in waters around Norway, Germany, northern France and Ireland. “It is encouraging to see that efforts by all of society, whether the public, industry, nongovernment organizations or government, to reduce plastic bags are having an effect,” says Thomas Maes, a marine litter scientist at CEFAS. “We also observed sharp declines in the percentage of plastic bags captured by fishing nets trawling the seafloor around the UK compared to 2010, and this research suggests that by working together, we can reduce, reuse and recycle to tackle the marine litter problem.” October 2018

ary and Beth Dagastine never set out to be bike dealers, but after Beth had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and was confined to a wheelchair, she later found that a recumbent trike—a bike that places the rider in a laid-back reclining position—helped her become more independent and mobile. It also allowed her to exercise in a way she didn’t think was possible. “Back in 2000, we drove into Spokane where they were giving test rides on recumbent trikes in Riverfront Park,” says Beth. “I got out of my wheelchair and into that bike, and I was gone! I rode around for two hours and I didn’t want to leave.” As a result, Gary set out to purchase a recumbent trike for her, but A happy Northwest Recumbent Cycles customer he found there were no dealers in the Spokane/ cycles, became a hobby, Northern Idaho area. as Gary eventually became “I had to change that,” self-taught in building, repairsays Gary, a retired sherGary and Beth Dagastine ing and customizing recumbent iff from the Kootenai County bicycles. Gary and Beth sell recumbent trikes from a shop on their property in Post Falls, Idaho, and welcome people from all over the world to come and take a test ride. They are currently the only dealer in the area that specializes exclusively in recumbent trikes. “And the business has gone nuts,” Gary says. Beth adds that they get calls at 6 a.m. or 9 p.m. about their recumbent trikes. They carry 15 brands including TerraTrike, Hase Bikes, BerkelBike, HP Velotechnik and Ti-Trikes. Many people find recumbent trikes comfortable and ergonomically friendly. “It’s like sitting on a couch, rather than sitting on a fence post,” Gary says. Recumbent trikes also have an advantage for people of differing abilities or mobility issues. “You sit in a recumbent bike, and it’s like being in a lounge chair,” Beth says. “They are easy to control with your arms and legs.” Gary and Beth can also customize the trikes for people’s specific needs. “There are a lot of adaptions we can do,” he says. “We don’t care what your disability is. We’ll work with it. We also want to just get people to put the remote control down, get off the couch, and get out and enjoy life. We have people who can’t walk a step, but they’re able to ride from our shop out to Q’emiln Park and back.” Beth, who is no longer confined to a wheelchair, says having a recumbent trike has changed her life, and she also has a stationary recumbent bike in the living room to use during winter months. “Recumbent trikes have helped a lot of people become mobile again,” she says. “They can relax and go at their own pace. And people think you can’t ride them on the roads, but you can. With recumbent trikes, we stay along the side of the road and just ride. It’s a wonderful feeling.” Contact Northwest Recumbent Cycles to learn more or to test ride a recumbent trike. Call 208-818-5491, email Gary@ NWRecumbentCycles.com or visit NWRecumbentCycles.com. ld-style rectangular metal lunchboxes are passé. New, convenient compartmentalized containers inspired by the Japanese bento box and Indian tiffin allow parents to pack up to five different, colorful and healthy items for a child’s lunch with less plastic wrapping to separate foods. It dovetails exactly with what nutrition professionals recommend.
Think Five
“People usually eat with their eyes,” says Allison Forajter, a clinical dietitian at Community Hospital, in Munster, Indiana. “The more color and variety presented the better.” Holley Grainger, a registered dietitian, creator of the blog Cleverful Living at HolleyGrainger.com and mother of two school-age daughters in Birmingham, Alabama, agrees, saying, “These boxes make lunchbox packing easier because each compartment can be assigned a different food group.” Grainger usually starts with a protein, adds fruits, vegetables and whole 14

grains, and inserts a surprise treat for a total of five selections. “One easy and inexpensive way to boost protein is through low-fat dairy options like milk, yogurt, string cheese or cottage cheese. For children that like meat and poultry, roasted chicken and low-sodium deli turkey are delicious options. This is where I like to work in leftovers, so last night’s entrée may be the filling for today’s lunchbox mini-tacos. For a high-protein vegetarian/vegan option, beans/legumes are a favorite, whether in dips, salsas, salads or pastas,” she says. Forajter recommends exploring varied colors of the same type of fruits or vegetables. Offer green and purple grapes or red, yellow, green and orange bell pepper strips, and ask kids if each color tasted different. Including unusual fruits or vegetables can be a learning experience for the whole family. “Try purple and orange cauliflower or red, yellow, white or purple carrots,” she suggests. Grainger not only packs healthy foods for her kids, she makes sure they get a little

Lunch: a Key Meal
“When children are fueled with nutritious foods, they are more alert and focused throughout the day, leading to better behavior, concentration and test scores,” says Grainger. “They also have the opportunity to fill up on many of the essential vitamins and minerals often lacking in away-from-home meals. I’ve found that my children are hungrier at lunch than at other meals, so they tend to fill up on whatever is being offered.” Judith Fertig writes award-winning cookbooks plus foodie fiction from Overland Park, KS (JudithFertig.com).

Flour Farm Organic Gluten Free Flour Blend
Spokane Couple Goes Against the Grain by Sheila Julson

few years ago, Dave DuPree and Teri Delany noticed how wheat essentially dominated the grain industry, with products from bread to pasta to baked goods, all primarily wheatbased. So when customers at their coffee stand, Latah Latte, and at their restaurant, Latah Bistro, started asking for gluten-free products, it sent the husband and wife team on a quest that led to their current venture, Flour Farm LLC, under which they market their Flour Farm Organic Gluten Free Flour Blend. The nutritious mix of sweet white rice, brown rice, tapioca flour, almond flour and coconut flour has quickly become a favorite among people with gluten allergies and sensitivities, as well as people seeking variety and additional flavor in their grains. “Gluten-free is an advantage to this flour, but it’s not a definition of this blend,” DuPree emphasizes. “It also tastes better, and it’s fully certified.” After countless hours, trial and error, and lots of recipe experimentation, Delany hit on a formula they were happy with. They started using it to make HandPies for Latah Latte, which became one of their bestselling items. DuPree and Delany have since sold the coffee stand and restaurant to focus on Flour Farm Organic Gluten Free Flour
Blend, which they officially launched this past April. While DuPree doesn’t have any known food allergies nor follows a specific diet, he says that his eczema went away after reducing wheat from his diet, and he also had more energy. Delany had suffered from digestive issues during much of her adult life, and standard medical treatments and tests failed to determine the problem. With the help of a naturopath, it was determined that gluten was the culprit. She now feels healthy and energized. Although wheat has been a staple of the human diet for thousands of years, DuPree notes that in recent decades, scientific modifications have changed wheat considerably, altering the crops for higher yields and fast production. “The commercial baking industry demands more gluten in their flour so it will rise higher and form bigger loaves,” he says. “That high gluten content is hard to digest. The body doesn’t like it; you might as well just eat chewing gum.” Flour Farm Organic Gluten Free Flour Blend is available in 30-ounce recyclable pouches or 25-pound bags online through Amazon. It can also be found in stores including My Fresh Basket and Huckleberry’s Natural Market. DuPree and Delany also plan to do in-person
demonstrations with samples of food made with their flour. Their website serves as a rich resource, listing both sweet and savory recipes that are friendly to those new to gluten-free baking. “With every recipe, I provide alternatives,” Delany says. “If you have an allergy, I list options you can use to swap out an ingredient, such as substituting nut milk for dairy. I’m a foodie, but I’m also glutenfree and I insist that my food tastes good. My recipes have been tested by customers, family, friends and even total strangers.” DuPree emphasizes that providing a superior product requires transparency. They personally have visited every grower and supplier from whom they source grains. “We don’t go out there with a scythe, but we’ve been to California to see our organic rice farmers, and we’ve been to coconut growers in the Philippines,” he says. “We also look at their labor practices to be sure workers are being treated and paid fairly.” Not only does that traceability set Flour Farm Organic Gluten Free Flour Blend apart from other baking products on the market, but DuPree notes that other gluten-free flours on store shelves try to mimic the rise, feel, texture and flavors of wheat flour by excessively adding additives such as xanthan or guar gum. “We didn’t come at it like that. If someone wants to make bread or pie crust, they can add those things if they like,” he says. Some of Delany’s recipes call for those gums, but many don’t, because of her extensive research and finding simple alternatives to costly ingredients commonly associated with gluten-free baking. DuPree and Delany also donate half of their proceeds from website purchases to Second Harvest food bank in Spokane. Funds are tracked through an affiliate link on Amazon. “We donated for a few years at the restaurant,” DuPree says. “There’s no reason why people in any country should be hungry, there’s so much food out there.” For more information about Flour Farm Organic Gluten Free Flour Blend or to order, visit Flour.Farm. How Sound Deepens Meditation by Dudley Evenson

hen life is stressful, we know we need to relax. The question is how. Many wonderful ways involve combining music with a meditation practice. Although we can’t always control our surroundings, we can learn to control how we react to and internalize what happens around us. On the value of meditation and mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society, at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, observes,
“When we do studies of this, we find we can change our brains. We can change our relationship to our emotions. We can change our relationship to the actuality of things in ways that are healing. The immune system responds.” Because sound affects us on all levels—emotional, mental and physical— combining musical processes with our meditation practice can be highly effective in easing stress. Cultures worldwide have long used music to lift the spirit and enhance meditation and healing.

4 Absence of hooks and refrains; avoid repetition and familiarity that engage the analytical mind. 4 Flowing. It is soothing and feels akin to nature. 4 Sub-audio frequencies. The presence of these is an optional way to entrain brainwaves to an alpha or theta state that allows relaxation and healing to occur. 4 Intention. It’s important for both the musician and listener. Here are several self-generated ways to further enhance meditation.
Controlling Breath We can live without food for weeks and water for days, but breath for only minutes. A simple way to begin breath work is by taking a fast, full inhalation, followed by a long, slow exhalation. With practice, both breath control and stress levels will improve.

Vocal Toning This uses the human voice to produce elongated vowel tones or humming sounds that can empower meditation. It also slows and lengthens our exhalation by putting a brake on the breath. Begin by taking a deep breath and then, with the mouth open, make a simple vowel tone such as ahh or ohh. With the exhalation pushing out a sound, the tone follows naturally.
Mantra and Chant Mantras can keep the demons of our monkey mind from distracting us. The word means “mind protection” in Sanskrit. A mantra is characterized by a short sound or phrase that carries a vibration and frequency that extends beyond the simple meaning of the words. Using mantras can help overcome mental chatter, de-stress and set us up for an expansion of consciousness. Dr. Herbert Benson, founder of the Mind/Body Medical Institute at Harvard Medical School, in Boston, documented a phenomenon he named “the relaxation response”. His research discovered that those that repeated mantras for even 10 minutes a day experienced physiological changes—a reduced heart rate, slower metabolism and lower stress levels, all of which allow the body to return to a more natural state of wellness.
Singing Affirmations Research led by Carnegie Mellon University’s David Creswell
found that people using self-affirmation also can protect against the damaging effects of stress on problem-solving performance. An affirmation is a positive statement spoken in the present tense asserting that a desired goal is already achieved. With sufficient repetition and focused intention, declaration becomes reality. Adding a melody to our affirmation and singing it repeatedly enhances its power. Mind-body expert Dr. Deepak Chopra agrees, stating, “Music helps to take the affirmations to a deeper level of the mind so that a process of emotional and spiritual transformation can start.” We are constantly affirming in our mind what we believe. With perseverance, repetition and steadfast belief in them, the words of our affirmations become a part of us. Before long, we notice we are achieving what we may have previously thought was impossible. Accessing the rich array of music and sound modalities available can help deepen meditation, decrease stress and allow us to benefit from a higher and much improved quality of life. Dudley Evenson and her husband, Dean, are sound healing pioneers who have produced award-winning music since 1979 through their label, Soundings of the Planet. Finding Answers to Your Health and Illness Questions
by Jerry Bailey

ften people, like yourself, are frustrated with why you feel “not quite right” while your well-meaning doctors are unable to find anything wrong. All the while running the same tests and expecting something to change. More commonly, you’re seeking answers to why you have any of the following symptoms: • exhaustion • weight gain • lack of drive • brain fog • hair falling out • decreased sex drive • bloated stomac • constipation or diarrhea • general overall feeling of being unwell Finding the answers to your health issues requires digging into the underlying issues that are causing them. The causes are key to understanding how to fix them and then prevent them from returning. The good news? The answers to your health questions can be discovered. The phrase “we can’t find anything wrong” is no longer acceptable with today’s advances in functional medicine. Oftentimes, it’s just a
matter of finding one of those rare doctors that will keep searching for the answers to your health concerns and finding the why behind the way you feel. In the last 10 years, advances in research and clinical practice point to looking deeper than just the typical screening tests that most physicians order. Basic blood work is designed to catch statistical outliers with overt disease showing up. However, most people do not fall “out of range.” They are within range of these basic tests yet still feel bad with no explanation other than “It’s in your head.” Often, their medical issue is beyond their physician’s area of expertise. tract are key tests to find the underlying issues that are causing your illness. These advanced tests delve deeper into why you feel the way you do so you can begin the journey toward getting healthy again. Your story on how you got to where you are is key to understanding how to reverse your illness to wellness. What got you to this point will keep you going down the same path no matter what medication or supplement you’re on unless you change the habits that got you there. Looking at the whole of you versus the microscopic portion of you, and the interconnectedness of all your parts, is essential. Everything works together and if one thing is out of balance, the house of cards starts to crumble. The understanding that your hormones and thyroid along with gut function affect the brain, and that the response of your body to chronic long-term stress has a detrimental effect on how the body works and how it can fight disease, is key to knowing why things are falling apart. Common Misperceptions About Yoga
A
I can’t do yoga. That’s because yoga is not something that you “do” - rather than forcing your body into the shape of the poses, bring the poses to your body and explore how they can work for you. Try giving yourself the gift of yoga. A fast practice is better than a slow one. Not necessarily. It depends on what effect you want from your practice. Personally, I like to move a little more slowly because I like easing into the pose and exploring my alignment within the pose. I like to find my breath, and refine my poses, and ultimately settle in for a while. Having said this, sometimes it’s fun to move faster and simply trust the process.
lison Rubin, owner and director of Harmony Yoga, has been practicing and teaching yoga in Spokane since 1983. Over the years she has heard many ideas about what yoga is and isn’t and she thought it would be fun to put her Alison Rubin thoughts together and share some of her own ideas about the many common yoga assumptions with Natural Awakenings readers.
Yoga is a physical practice. Actually, the physical practice of asana (postures) is just one limb of an 8-limbed system. The physical practice is the third limb, flanked by the first two which consist of ethical and personal practices, and the remaining five which consist of pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation techniques. The physical practice is simply a tool that we can use to keep our body fit and our energy flowing smoothly.
You must be flexible to practice yoga. This is absolutely not true! Some folks new to yoga are naturally flexible, but there are many more who come to yoga with tight muscles. Through a consistent practice of yoga, you will become more flexible. However, it doesn’t happen overnight; you must be patient and take one day at a time, one posture at a time and one breath at a time.
Yoga is a religion. Nope! The path of yoga consists of practices that help us to live more consciously in relationship with our Self, others and the planet.
You have to be skinny to practice yoga. Not at all. In fact, some of the most flexible people are not at all skinny. Yoga is for everyone of all shapes and sizes. The practice can be modified to adapt to all body types.
You must stop practicing with an injury. Sometimes this is true when you need to rest or avoid bearing weight. However, I’ve found that most of the time I can tune into the site of the injury and select poses that I think might help and avoid those that I feel would not. Another option is to practice something altogether different for another area of my body and give the injured area a rest.
Alison Rubin started practicing yoga in 1972. Since then she has trained with many excellent instructors and has taught in Spokane since 1983. She currently owns Harmony Yoga, where she teaches weekly classes and workshops, and offers RYT-200 and RYT-300 teacher trainings. She loves to weave the philosophy of yoga into her classes and endeavors to practice yoga on and off the mat. To learn more, visit Harmonyoga.com. See Yoga Studio Directory, page 23.

lthough media coverage of yoga often highlights advanced yoga poses, the practice is not reserved solely for super-flexible folks. Benefits are available to everyone of any age or physical type. “Many people assume that yoga requires the ability to be a contortionist. Yoga is an internal process and can meet us wherever we are,” says yoga therapist Kimberly Carson, of Mindful Yoga Works, in Portland, Oregon. Springing from the theory that half of our capacity to become more flexible lies less in the muscles than in the nervous system, this calming practice helps the body release tension and achieve a suppler state.

Yoga poses don’t need to be intense to have a significant effect. Gentle, regular practice can improve range of motion, increase muscle strength and promote circulation of the synovial fluid surrounding joints that supplies oxygen and nutrients to cartilage. “Basic yoga is just as beneficial as more advanced ideas of yoga, especially in terms of body awareness,” says Piper Abbott, an integrative yoga therapist and
inwAwakenings.com
teacher who owns Burlington Yoga, in Burlington, Vermont. “Where our attention goes, energy flows. When we’re holding a posture and directing this focused awareness into the sensation of a stretch, we’re learning to read our body.” Agility is usually associated with muscles and joints, but underlying flexibility goes deep to further enhance wellness. Stiff muscles often go hand-inhand with stiff arteries, for example, but appropriate exercise can have a positive effect there, too. According to studies by physical therapist Miriam Cortez-Cooper, Ph.D., and her colleagues during her tenure at the University of Texas at Austin, stretching exercises performed for 11 weeks improved flexibility of the carotid artery—the main vessel that transports blood to the brain—by 23 percent. Such an increase did not result from aerobic exercise or strength training.
Every Body Can Benefit “Yoga is truly for any and every body. Flexibility or a lack thereof can be found in anatomies of any shape. Many options
for poses exist to help you find the version that works best for you. Yoga props such as blocks and straps can provide support to encourage experimenting while ensuring a safe approach,” says Anna Guest-Jelley, CEO of Curvy Yoga, in Portland, Oregon. She loves sharing the value of yoga with people of all sizes. “What’s important is working wherever you are within your current range of motion, so your body can open to new movements appropriately.” Maintaining a regular practice offers an opportunity for individuals living with chronic pain or undergoing cancer treatment to feel more at ease. “Even in cases of severe fibromyalgia, some movement is better than none, and can foster better sleep. Restorative sleep can help to heal microtears in muscles, which can be common. Non-goal-oriented yoga also offers layers of benefits for cancer patients, both supporting physical function, as well as offering a way to practice kindness towards the body/mind during tough times,” says Carson. For seniors, yoga is an excellent way to foster better flexibility, even in the presence of osteoarthritis. Studies conducted by Dr. Sharon Kolasinski, of the University of Pennsylvania, found that Iyengar yoga reduced joint stiffness and pain reduction during an eight-week period in people with knee osteoarthritis. Chair yoga, though popular with seniors, can introduce unnecessary risk if not tailored appropriately for those with osteoporosis, Carson cautions. “It’s important for older adults to find classes taught by appropriately trained instructors. Inappropriate chair sitting itself can compromise bone health, so teachers trained in spinal health and planes of action are recommended.” No matter the level of an individual’s agility, improved flexibility is a boon, especially when it goes beyond the physical to embrace mental and spiritual aspects. Abbott remarks, “Yoga has taught me not only how to move and relate to my body, but how to gracefully adjust to change and the challenges of life.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer and authors books related to the fields of alternative health and spirituality. J
ake and Sarah Digre and their team of specialized massage therapists and yoga instructors believe healing and recovery happens in many aspects of life. They have seen numerous clients achieve quicker and more longterm recoveries when they incorporated yoga into their massage and wellness routine. Yoga empowers an individual’s healing and enhances their life, relationships and athletic training. The Digres opened Hayden Yoga & Massage in early 2018 with the intention of bringing the yoga community to Hayden, Idaho, and surrounding areas. In addition to a regular class schedule, the studio’s goal is to create an open and supportive space available for yoga teachers to rent, teach, commune and build their own yoga practice and following. “If you are a yoga teacher interested in connecting with the studio, please contact us,” affirms the pair. “We would love to talk with you.” Location: 9751 N. Government Way, Ste. 4, Hayden, Idaho. Call 208-6961330 or visit HaydenYoga.com. FB and Instagram: @HaydenYoga

Yoga Meets Life’s Essential Questions
Tapping into Our True Nature
I
by Michael A. Singer
n 1972, I experienced a profound spiritual awakening and went into seclusion to focus on my inner growth. This awakening helped me see that I’m not my mind—I am the observer of my mind. I watched this chattering mind creating an obstacle to self-realization and true happiness. I also came to realize another clear truth: The outside world isn’t personal. It’s unfolding according to all the forces that have taken place from the beginning of creation. Call it science or the will of God—it doesn’t matter. What matters is we didn’t do it, and it isn’t supposed to match what we want. When we see this, we can transcend the limited mind and embrace the true nature of our being. We’ve each developed personal likes and dislikes resulting from life experiences that have left good or unfavorable impressions within us. These impressions determine how we view the world, and they limit our ability to enjoy life. We can begin learning how to release these impressions by letting go of the little things that irritate us for no reason—like the weather or someone’s attitude. We have a tendency to resist uncomfortable feelings, so we try to fix and control our environment. A commit-

ment to yoga demands that we let go of our personal reactions and use each experience in life to go beyond our comfort zone. The science of yoga is centered on realizing the essential self—the one within who is simply aware. It comes from thousands of years of enlightened beings devoting their lives to the questions: “Who am I? Why do my thoughts and emotions change so much?” This inquiry helps us find the true self inside, the self beyond personality and the mind’s fears and opinions. Progress happens through cultivating awareness. The simplest approach is to ask: “Who is in here looking through these eyes and experiencing this world?” Don’t try to answer. Just relax back into the essence of your being—the one who sees—and experience life from this place of awareness. When we’re clear and comfortable with who we are inside, life becomes beautiful—regardless of what is going on around us. We can then help raise the world for the better. There is freedom and peace in that. Michael A. Singer, author of The Untethered Soul, is founder of the Temple of the Universe yoga and meditation center, in Alachua, Florida. See UntetheredSoul.com.
