“Necessity is the mother of invention. A need or problem encourages creative effort to meet the need or solve the problem.” ~ Plato “At seventeen, I enlisted in the Marine Corps. At Camp Lejeune, I drank water contaminated with carcinogenic substances which gave me cancer. The Chemotherapy destroyed the cartilage in my cervical spine. The pain became so intense, I felt I would not be able to work much longer as a Physical Therapist.

Hence, the creation of Chazael Lotion.” Kevin Sgroi, PT Creator of Chazael Lotion

“Chazael lotion is amazing! After being shot six times on March 6, 2016, nothing helped alleviate the severe swelling in my feet until my physical therapist gave me this lotion. He said it works equally well in relieving the symptoms of arthritis, muscle spasms, and increasing flexibility in joints plagued by arthritis. Please try this product!”

Pastor Tim, Coeur d’Alene Photo courtesy of Nspire magazine

“When someone would say ‘make a fist’ I could only chuckle and give them my flat hand with fingers slightly curved. One day, I was very blessed to be treated with Chazael Lotion! Now I can make a complete fist with my right hand and almost a complete one with my left. The greatest benefit of this lotion is being PAIN FREE!”

Kathleen P., Hayden “Chazael, the essential oil based serum used by Kevin in his physical therapy treatments, is nothing short of a miracle. It provides incredible relief to my swollen tissues, aching muscles and arthritic joints. To see the rest of my testimonial, go to Chazael-Lotion.com.”

very month, Pamela Barclay, owner of Wonders of the World, highlights the symbolism of a precious gemstone in the Community Resource Guide section of the magazine (page 30). For June, she sent this pearl of a description (have I mentioned I love puns to an annoying degree?). I absolutely loved the symbolism she describes here, and since June is my birth month and I’ve been feeling some irritation lately, I thought I’d flow with it. So yeah, I’ve been feeling like an irritated oyster lately. And I know I’m not alone. As a white woman in this society, I am afforded many privileges and opportunities that are often invisible to me. I take them for granted, yet when I am conscious of them, I feel irritated at the implicit and explicit bias that exists based solely on how a person looks, their skin color, gender, sexual orientation, etc., and I want to do something. Argh. I’ve also been acutely aware of subtle and not-so-subtle sexism that plays out daily in seemingly innocent ways. Men in powerful positions promoting other men to powerful positions, while equally qualified women and people of color remain in low-power places. Or the business-tobusiness networking events that headline mostly male presenters even when the audience is half female. The lack of representation can be glaring, and, quite frankly, painful. Don’t get me wrong, I love men. I especially love men who are allies and ‘get it’. The more men in power positions that are willing to hear the voices of the marginalized, and give them a chance, the better for all of us. Which leads me back to my irritation, that now, thanks to Pamela, I have decided is becoming a pearl of purity and peace. I’m not there yet; but given time, this irritation will produce joy, light and opportunities for me, you, my daughters, your sons and daughters, and everyone. Yep, that’s the plan. Who’s with me? Now that I’m off my soapbox, let’s talk June issue! We are highlighting natural beauty this month with some fabulous articles from local experts, including Dr. Julie George and Malina Yeager, on the hidden toxins and artificial ingredients in common health and beauty products. Four words: get rid of ‘em. Lucky for you, we’re also including a guide to natural beauty services and products in the Inland Northwest. How livable are our Spokane/ Coeur d’Alene communities? Find out within these pages. And you do not want to miss our Reader Awakenings article featuring Pastor Tim Remington who was shot six times back in 2016, and who is doing great thanks to physical therapist, Kevin Sgroi, and his miracle in a bottle, Chazael Lotion. What else? Ann Brueggemann shares the amazing benefits of Nia for exercise, Jenny Wiglesworth discusses the benefits of collagen, and Cat Carrell gives us the skinny on Greenstone Homes and the super cool Kendall Yards neighborhood. Here’s to a fabulous June, people! And remember: No grit, no pearl.

Inland Northwest

One of the most powerfully symbolic gemstones comes from the byproduct of an irritated oyster. The pearl takes irritation and turns it into a magnificent symbol of purity and peace. Its lesson for the world is to turn sadness into joy and darkness into light. It takes time, but when complete, brings peace to the oyster and to the planet. ~ Pamela Barclay, Owner of Wonders of the World

Chazael Pain Relief Lotion “A Miracle In a Bottle”

W

hen physical therapist Kevin Sgroi sought relief from painful side effects caused by aggressive chemotherapy treatments, he began experimenting with medicines and lotions that he used to treat his own patients. Sgroi’s alchemy led to Chazael Pain Relief Lotion. Chazael (pronounced khaz-aw-ale) is a biblical name meaning “God sees.” The lotion is made from all natural ingredients and is regularly used by Sgroi on his patients to help relieve muscle pain, spasms and leg cramps. Chazael also decreases pain and swelling from arthritis and joint inflammation. Since creating Chazael, Sgroi has used it to help many with pain relief, including Pastor Tim Remington of Altar Church, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. In March 2016, Remington was shot multiple times while heading to his car after church service. Six of the 12 shots fired by the assailant—who fired from only 12 feet away—hit Remington in the back. Today, he still has three bullets lodged in him, and approximately one hundred pieces of shrapnel remain in his body. It’s been a long road for Remington since that traumatic incident, but despite his doctor’s grim prognosis that Remington

Pastor Tim Remington and his wife, Cindy

would never walk again, he was out of his wheelchair and back to preaching within three months after the crime occurred. He’s even relearning to play the piano. He cites Sgroi’s compassion and skill as a physical therapist, as well as Chazael Pain Relief Lotion, as key to his recovery. “After working with Kevin for about six months, my hand was still swollen up like a balloon,” says Remington. “But I started applying Chazael, and within five minutes my hand flattened out and returned to normal.” Remington religiously uses Chazael Pain Relief Lotion daily. He asserts that the lotion, combined with Sgroi’s therapy,

has created miracles in his own recovery. Chazael Pain Relief Lotion has also changed the lives of Remington’s wife and son, both of whom had suffered pain and numbness from accidents. “Pain is caused by inflammation. If you can reduce the inflammation, there’s less pressure on the nerves. Chazael helps get that inflammation down,” explains Remington, who now regularly recommends Chazael Pain Relief Lotion to his parishioners after he witnessed the relief it brought to a pregnant woman with severe edema. “Her feet were huge and swollen, so I gave her husband a bottle of Chazael and told him to rub it on her feet. By the time that day’s service had ended, she walked out with normal-sized feet. I’ve watched people with arthritis, severe migraines and other issues use Chazael, and I’ve seen firsthand on countless occasions how it reduced the inflammation. I refer many people to Kevin, but I tell them ‘don’t believe anything I’m saying—buy a bottle and check it out for yourself.” For more information, contact Joshua Tree Physical Therapy located at 8300 Wayne Dr., in Hayden, Idaho at 208-772-9774 or visit Chazael-Lotion.com. Shared by Arnold and Judy Berkin We first learned of green barley powder in 1987. Judy suffered from anemia constantly and took iron medication with its associated problems. After six weeks of daily use of this green powder, there was a major change in her blood iron levels. Then I got the courage to try this “green stuff” myself. Three years previously, I had a major heart episode. After taking these greens for three months, I felt well enough to stop taking all the prescribed heart medication I was on. When AIM came to Australia, we didn’t have to be convinced; we joined immediately. In 1995, we were were awarded a trip to San Francisco, sponsored by The AIM Companies™. That was a great experience. Our favorite products are BarleyLife, RediBeets and Just Carrots powders. In October 2016, Judy had a bad fall and broke her upper right arm. We then added CalciAIM to the Garden Trio, and she is doing fine now. As beekeepers, we learned that if our bees were struggling to find good pollen sources, they would consume BarleyLife. It amazed us how it helps to raise the crude protein level in their bodies. To get the BarleyLife to the bees, we just sprinkle about 10 grams of the powder in the bottom box where the brood— young developing bees—is located. We do this once a month, and it also helps them in cleaning the hive. BarleyLife doesn’t improve the actual honey, but it does improve the health of the bees, so they can produce more honey with a lower moisture content. By eating the BarleyLife, the bees are more resilient and able to cope better with environmental stress. Most honeys have health benefits for people. Citrus honey is helpful with respiratory problems. All honeys give an energy boost to your day. The very dark honeys help with lower bowel conditions. For example, a person who had been told they needed to have major bowel surgery came to us in 1994. They have been taking BarleyLife and Banksia honey ever since and have not required any surgery. Testimonials should not be construed as representing results everybody can achieve. Reprinted with permission of AIM International Inc., Nampa, Idaho. How Livable Are Our Local Communities? Local Livability Index Scores

T

he AARP Public Policy Institute developed the Livability Index as a web-based tool to measure community livability. Users can search the Index by address, ZIP Code or community to find an overall livability score, as well as a score for each of seven major categories. Scores range from 0 to 100. Users can also customize the Index to place higher or lower emphasis on the livability features of most importance to them. The website provides resources to help consumers and policymakers use livability scores to effect change in their communities. It is the first tool of its kind to measure livability broadly at the neighborhood level for the entire country, and it is intended to inform and encourage people to take action to make their communities more livable.

Good for People and the Planet by John D. Ivanko and Lisa Kivirist

M

any people define a livable city as one that is easy to get around in by foot, bike or public transportation. Many also prioritize ready access to fresh, local, organic food via farmers’ markets and community gardens. Others champion affordable housing and cost of living factors, safe neighborhoods with a diversity of people, careful stewardship of clean air and water, and plentiful amenities, including considerable open space and natural settings. Many work to preserve and enhance a sense of place suited to the locale. Partners for Livable Communities, a national nonprofit in Washington, D.C., that renews and restores communities, maintains, “Livability is the sum of the factors that add up to a community’s quality of life, including the built and natural environments, economic prosperity, social stability and equity, educational opportunity and cultural, entertainment and

recreation possibilities.” The American Association of Retired Persons considers livable communities as age-friendly for young and old alike. Along with economic opportunities, a leading stimulus in moving to urban centers is, “More people are looking for a sociable environment where they can walk out of their door to the shops or transit and be among others they recognize who also recognize them,” observes Suzanne Lennard, director of the International Making Cities Livable Conferences, LLC, in Portland, Oregon. “People who have traveled abroad, especially to Europe, and tasted the quality of life possible in a truly livable, walkable, beautiful and sociable city, often want to find such a place to live themselves.” Following are a few examples of America’s many livable cities. More are transitioning and evolving as city planners, government officials, businesses and

inwAwakenings.com

Street-Scene Renaissance

In Pittsburgh, revitalization is transforming 10,000 parcels of vacant or abandoned land—some where steel mills formerly operated—into greenspace, bike lanes and other enticing and productive public areas. “Biking and our food scene have exploded,” says Chris Sandvig, director of policy with the Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group, which advocates for equitable urban revitalization through their Vacant Property Working Group, helping communities access blighted areas for pennies on the dollar. “We’re now one of the top 10 bicycling commuter cities in the country. People also come here as food tourists due to vibrant local agricultural activity.” “A related ideal is to create compact, human-scale, mixed-use urban centers in the suburbs that are less expensive to construct—and thus remain more affordable— while placing shops, schools, parks, services, workplaces and public transit within walking and biking distance,” Lennard notes. “This ensures a healthy, affordable and high quality of life for all; suburban, as well as urban.” Fast-growing Carmel, Indiana, just north of Indianapolis, is following suit. “After years of watching the suburbs sprawl into subdivisions with large lawns, privacy fences and cul-de-sacs, we created a vibrant central core with apartments, townhomes, condos and new options for smaller homes—all within walking distance or a short bike ride to new places to work, shop and dine,” explains Mayor James Brainard. The design efforts serve people instead of cars. “Carmel has spent the last 20-plus years building more than 900 miles of trails and multi-use pathways, enabling residents to commute by bicycle to work and enjoy easy access to a growing number of parks and recreational areas,” says Brainard. To facilitate traffic flow, some 100 roundabouts replaced stoplights and four-way

stops. “Reducing traffic congestion has improved our air quality, and saved gasoline and lives.” A new, mixed-use downtown Arts and Design District includes a Center for the Performing Arts with a Center Green that hosts a farmers’ market in summer and an outdoor Christkindlmarkt and outdoor skating rink in winter. “The old way of doing things in which cities and towns sat back and let the market dictate how a community should be grown must come to an end,” remarks Brainard, advocating the benefits of local governance.

Smart City Advantages

Key elements of smart cities—sensors, cameras, data analytics and powerful networks that capture and relay vital information—help them become more energy-efficient or quicker to respond to environmental and residential issues. Such products highlighted the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, in Las Vegas. Reducing traffic can also contribute to safer highways and shorter commutes with decreased greenhouse gas emissions. “Citizens are using apps to monitor issues and alert city managers, improving the livability of their communities,” explains Steve Koenig, senior director of market research with the Consumer Technology Association.

12

Inland Northwest

In Boston, the app BOS:311 allows residents to instantaneously notify government departments of pollution concerns, like blocked drains and other environmental or community needs, feeding the information directly into the city’s work order system via their mobile phone. This real-time collaboration results in a cleaner, safer and healthier city. The Envision Charlotte project encompasses interactive kiosks in 64 businesses and government buildings citywide, gathering energy usage data for office buildings to increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. So far, energy consumption has dropped 19 percent, saving companies about $26 million. The program has strengthened economic competitiveness and environmental sustainability.

Nature in the City

Some cities have focused on the natural environment for improving local livability while mitigating contributions to climate change. Forested open spaces, wetlands and protected watersheds improve air quality, protect drinking water and buffer intense storms. Such areas also connect more people with nature and engage them in communal and healthy outdoor recreation. Portland, Oregon, boasts more than

inwAwakenings.com

10,000 acres of parks, plus an innovative Biketown sharing program that has facilitated 160,000 bike trips since its launch in 2016. The city’s Bike Bill requires all new streets to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians by design. Portland also embraces urban gardens and allows residents to raise chickens, bees, goats or rabbits in their backyards. No one wants to live where pollution runs unchecked or water is unsafe to drink. Philadelphia’s Green City, Clean Waters program works to keep stormwater out of sewers and reduce rainwater runoff through decentralized soil-based and plant-based systems, including pervious pavement, green roofs and rain gardens. Begun in 2011, its goal is to reduce rainwater runoff by 85 percent by 2036. Rainwater has become a valuable community resource. The program is just one of many ways that the City of Brotherly Love is transforming itself into one of the greenest in the United States. Overseen by the city’s Office of Sustainability, Greenworks Philadelphia devises long-term sustainability strategies that encompass eight facets, including clean and efficient energy, carbon-neutrality and zero waste. Preparations are already underway to cope with a hotter, wetter future.

Preserving a Sense of Place

Making communities livable goes beyond infrastructure. Actions usually involve preserving, protecting and enhancing what appeals to residents. Santa Fe, New Mexico, is one example of many where livability priorities are guided by the values of its residents and its sense of place. “From our historic public square and marketplaces to outdoor cafes, farmers’ markets and community festivals; from human-scale architecture and balanced transportation to pedestrian and bicycle networks, this place represents shared values,” says Mayor Javier M. Gonzales. “Santa Fe is also full of public art. The city is designed to be safe, creative and inspiring for young and old, families of all kinds and everyone else that comes to see us.”

Good Life as Kids See It

Ultimately, making cities move livable for children can make them highly livable for all. “Children need the same things from a city that we all need, but their needs are greater than ours,” says Lennard. “The environment a child grows up in shapes their health and their mental and social development for the rest of their lives. Our modern, unwalkable suburban environments are contributing to childhood obesity, which has been widely linked to chronic diseases that in the past were only associated with old age.” She notes, “Children need the exercise of walking or biking to school. They need safe streets so they can become independent and explore their neighborhoods; sidewalks and other outdoor areas where they can play, meet friends and interact with adults in the community; easy access to nature; beauty in their environment; and intriguing architecture, works of art and other places to stimulate their affection and imagination. As they become teenagers, they need access by foot or bike to a wide variety of resources to broaden their horizons. Don’t we all need these things?” John D. Ivanko and Li a Kivirist, co-authors of ECOpreneuring, operate the Inn Serendipity, wholly powered by renewable energy, in Browntown, WI.

Greenstone Homes’ Livable Philosophy by Cat Carrel

G

reenstone Homes, a builder based in Liberty Lake, Washington, designs their communities around a checklist of amenities that embodies the philosophy of what makes a community livable. When designing Kendall Yards, their mixed-use urban village on the north bank of the Spokane River in downtown Spokane, that way of thinking shines through in the many livable qualities they have built into the development. Some of these qualities include: • A walkable neighborhood, inviting residents to walk to dinner, the theater, or to a sports or concert event • Events and activities, encouraging neighbors to get to know each other with a weekly farmers’ market, outdoor concerts, and art nights • Outdoor art, engaging people and stimulating conversations • Public spaces, increasing the socioeconomic and cultural diversity of the community • Green space and trails, encouraging active lifestyles and the enjoyment of nature • Street trees and landscaping, softening the hardscape and breathing oxygen back into the air we breathe

Kendall Yards

• Access to healthy food, providing fresh, organic food to not only the residents of Kendall Yards but the surrounding neighborhood via a local grocery market and farmers’ market • Managing water runoff, designing a stormwater capture system that filters runoff through the ground instead of drains that dump into the Spokane River. Taken separately, these qualities each increase the quality of life for residents; but when combined, make for a truly livable community that benefits the greater good of the city and its residents. For more information about Kendall Yards or other Greenstone Home communities, visit KendallYards.com and GreenstoneHomes. com. See the Greenstone Homes sponsored Farmers’ Market guide, page 26.

Research also shows that most Americans would be healthier, happier and safer going about their daily activities if they slept 60 to 90 more minutes each night, according to the American Psychological Association. A consistent sleep routine helps enable a good night’s rest, with activities like going to bed at the same time whenever possible; shutting down the Internet, email and text messaging at least an hour before bedtime; and limiting intake of caffeine and alcohol. Another best practice is eating foods that help us relax, fall and stay asleep. Four primary sleep-promoting vitamins and minerals naturally found in foods are tryptophan, magnesium, calcium and vitamin B6. Some of these help the body produce melatonin, the hormone responsible for regulating the

Some foods are naturally packed with these essential vitamins and minerals, and eating certain foods at certain times can help us tip the scale towards a successful night of restful sleep.

According to a 2013 review published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, CBD soothes nausea and vomiting, acts as an anti-oxidant to reduce free radicals that cause neurodegenerative disorders, and works as an anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling. CBD also relieves pain and may work to reduce chronic anxiety and depression disorders. These benefits of CBD are also helpful for patients struggling with temporary anxiety and depression resulting from a more serious medical condition. The effects of CBD on children with uncontrolled seizures is currently under investigation. Study participants suffer symptoms resistant to conventional treatments. Many participants have Dravet syndrome, a condition that begins in early childhood and causes frequent, disabling seizures on a daily basis. Even with the wave of states legalizing medical marijuana, many physicians are still reluctant to prescribe cannabinoids because they are not sure what dosages to prescribe. After all, most medical schools never cover CBD in their pharmacology courses. Medical scientists are just now developing dosing schedules for medical marijuana, medicinal hemp and their extracts, including CBD. CBD-rich hemp oil comes in various concentrations and forms, including liquid hemp oil, hemp oil as a thick paste, oil in capsules, sublingual tincture drops or sprays, salves for topical use, edibles as in candy or gum, and CBD vapor from vaporizers similar to e-cigarettes. Are Your Beauty Products Really Natural? by Malina Yeager

O

ne thing is for sure: green beauty has gone mainstream. And with all the new products on the market, it’s hard to tell which products are truly natural and which companies are just greenwashing. Just because a product is marketed as “natural” does not mean that it’s environmentally friendly. The practice of adding a minuscule amount of a natural ingredient so that a product can be marketed as green is also known in the industry as using ‘marketing ingredients.’ Marketing ingredients increase label appeal, making consumers more likely to buy the product since it looks like, and is marketed as, a natural product. Here is the good news: Armed with a few tips and resources we can all feel confident about reading labels and shopping for beauty products that are clean, natural, and good for us. Follow the below tips when you search for beauty products, and you will be on your way to a healthier, cleaner beauty routine that won’t harm your hair, skin or health.

A rose by any other name Ingredients that sound complicated or complex are commonly perceived as unhealthy. This idea is a carry-over from the organic food movement whose mantra is “if you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it.” This is a good rule of thumb for food but doesn’t always apply to beauty prod18

Inland Northwest

ucts. While many beauty products contain foodbased ingredients, many of them also contain natural elements with technical sounding names that can cause confusion. One example of a natural ingredient that may not sound familiar is dihydrogen oxide—also known as water. The lesson here is that just because you can’t pronounce an ingredient on the label or you aren’t familiar with it doesn’t mean it’s unnatural, unhealthy or unsafe.

Label reading 101 Believe it or not, there only two ingredients you need to know about to quickly eliminate nearly 99 percent of products you wouldn’t want on your hair or skin. Here are the two you need to avoid.

1

Artificial fragrance Suffice it to say, artificial fragrances are a concoction of chemical ingredients. What’s more, these mixtures are listed as just ‘fragrance’ on the label. Artificial fragrances can be made up of hundreds of toxic and harmful chemicals (including phthalates), that studies have linked to hormone disruption, allergies, topical dermatitis and other ailments. Artificial fragrances are used more often than essential oils in personal care products for a variety of reasons, including stability in a formula, as they are less likely to break down and change fragrance over time. They are also a fraction of the cost of essential oils, since they are human-made

inwAwakenings.com

and manufactured in a lab. Further, there is never a supply issue, since they’re not dependent on crop yield or seasonality. Also, remember that companies will often add a tiny amount of essential oil in a formula just so they can add it to the label—even though the real fragrance is artificial. Don’t be deceived by this sleight of hand. Read the label carefully; artificial fragrance will be tucked away someplace toward the end of the ingredient list. If the label lists artificial fragrance on it, find a different product. Typically labeled as fragrance, parfum or perfume.

2

Silicones A petroleum-derived ingredient, silicones or the ‘cones’ are what I consider a quick fix group of ingredients, especially for the hair. They act as a Band-Aid to fix damaged, frizzy, curly or otherwise unruly hair. They work by coating the hair, making it shiny and soft. The buildup blocks moisture from penetrating the hair, in turn, this dehydrates the hair. As a result, the hair becomes dull and lifeless. They are also not biodegradable and burden the earth with more waste. Companies use silicones in everything from facial serums to shampoos and conditioner. Typically listed on the label as silicone, dimethicone or anything ending in ‘cone’.

Seals and Certifications Another way to know if a product is natural is to see if they have any seals or certifications. If a product is certified, you may see a small round stamp on the label that identifies the accreditation. There are many certifications that a company can obtain. Here are a few of the most common ones, including those with the highest standards.

USDA Organic This seal is a popular one on food products and is considered the gold standard in the industry. It’s not as prevalent to see this on a beauty product but when you do, you know it’s a good one. The USDA organic certification is the most difficult

for a beauty company to obtain because it was created for farms and food, not beauty products. In order for a beauty product to use the USDA seal, they must go through an intense and rigorous process of proving their ingredients are organic and that their methods prevent cross-contamination with non-organic ingredients.

Soil Association Founded in 1946, the soil association was the first in the world to create an organic certification. This UK-based charity is another very high standard for natural and organic beauty products. Many U.S. brands that sell in European countries have this seal, sometimes right alongside the USDA organic seal.

Environmental Working Group The Environmental Working Group (EWG) fills a unique gap in the certification market and is one of the newer beauty standards to come onto the scene. EWG certified products take all the data available on the health effects of ingredients and then certify companies that follow the strict EWG standards. The companies that apply for the certification are not allowed to use ingredients containing harmful compounds and must disclose all fragrance components on the label. Companies must also adhere to strict manufacturing practices to ensure the safety of each product. Visit EWG.org.

The Hidden Harm in our Personal Care Products by Julie George

M

ost of us begin our days applying deodorant, shampoo, soaps, lotions and cosmetics without much thought. Loyal to our favorite brands, we’ve been buying them for years. However, many of our tried-and-true products contain ingredients that could be harmful to our health. With more than eighty thousand chemicals being used in commerce today, we’re constantly being bombarded with chemicals that can contribute to an increase in our body’s toxic burden. While we can’t control every ounce of chemical exposure, one area we do have control over is our personal care products. It’s not an easy task; however. Becoming familiar with the ingredients in those products, and choosing the healthiest possible products, will reduce the amount of toxins our bodies are being exposed to each day. The most toxic everyday exposures from cosmetics include parabens, phthalates, 1,4 dioxane, petroleum-derivatives, and heavy metals. We absorb a portion of these chemicals and metals through our skin and respiratory system. Scientific evidence points to chemical exposure as contributing to cancer, infertility, hormone dysfunction, neurological disorders and autoimmune disease. Therefore, to prevent disease or reduce symptoms we must focus

on reducing our body’s burden of chemicals. Unfortunately, not all chemicals are listed on product labels. For example, according to the SafeCosmetics.org website, the FDA does not require the chemical 1,4-dioxane to be listed as an ingredient “because the chemical is a contaminant produced during manufacturing. Without labeling, there is no way to know for certain whether a product contains 1,4,-dioxane, making it difficult for consumers to avoid it.” Avoidance is the best way to reduce the body’s daily toxic burden. The EWG. org/skindeep is a great website that lists personal care products and their potential health risks. Those that suffer from chronic conditions or who want to prevent chronic conditions may choose to use advanced testing options to determine levels within the body. Working with a naturopathic doctor or functional medicine doctor that focuses on environmental medicine can be beneficial in ensuring your body is not being affected by past or current exposure to chemicals. Dr. Julie George practices environmental medicine and specializes in autoimmune disorders at Rivercreek Wellness, located at 521 N. Argonne Rd., Ste B105, Spokane Valley, WA. e’ve been hearing a lot about collagen and collagen peptides as of late. It seems that they’re everywhere—in our shakes, vitamins, protein bars—we even find them in our coffee. While most of us realize that collagen peptides are a way to get more protein into our diet, many are still wondering what it is and why this popular protein is on the rise. Collagen provides the body with 18 amino acids—eight of the nine essential amino acids—so they are a great source of protein. It is the most important structural protein in the body and helps strengthen our bones, joints, hair, nails and skin. Unfortunately, due to its complexity it can’t be effectively absorbed naturally through the body, through a supplement or other form. There lies the opportunity for collagen peptides. Collagen peptides are composed of the same amino acids, with varying properties. These properties allow for them to be broken down easier and brought into the bloodstream for proper absorption. Once in the body, the peptides not only begin doing repairs, they help create energy. Another popular product, hydrolyzed protein, is as effective as collagen peptides. While the processing to create the proteins might differ, the way the body uses them is the same. The benefits of the peptides are astounding. Not only do they provide us with a source of valuable proteins, but they’re also an amazing way to revive the

inwAwakenings.com

body. Imagine if you are an athlete struggling with joint issues from playing football or dancing throughout your entire career. With peptides, your body will begin to heal those joints, repairing them from the cellular level. Imagine cancer having taken over your body, depleting your hair, skin and bones, leaving you brittle. Peptides, although not miracleworkers, can help revive your body when back in remission and possibly even during cancer treatments. The science behind peptides is amazing and consuming them can be lifechanging. Whether you’re simply trying to hit your daily protein intake or desiring something that can provide softer skin, smoother hair and stronger bones, peptides will do it. The more research we do on this product, the more we discover how essential peptides are to our everyday life. Thankfully, a wide variety of our local grocery stores and coffee stands have the powder to place into your favorite drinks. As these products become more available, everyone will have access to the new way to heal the body from the inside-out. RUNNING WITH THE KIDS Strengthens Body, Mind and Family Spirit

C

by Marlaina Donato

ombining regular exercise with quality family time can be an enjoyable and fun way to realize a healthier lifestyle. Running together in fresh air, preferably in natural settings, allows children as young as 5 to safely join in.

Physical and Emotional Perks

Families and coaches agree that running benefits both body and psyche. “Running as a family is an incredibly bonding experience, putting aside some of the usual conflicts and perceived hierarchies and just coming together,” says William Pullen, a London, England, psychotherapist and author of Running with Mindfulness: Dynamic Running Therapy (DRT) to Improve Low-mood, Anxiety, Stress, and Depression. “Running also gives us a place where we can develop skills like building confidence and competency.” Marc Bloom, of Princeton, New Jersey, author of Young Runners: The Complete Guide to Healthy Running for Kids From 5 to 18 and The Runner’s Bible, concurs, stating, “Running as a family can give parents the opportunity to be good role models by instilling values of health, fitness and togetherness.” Experts emphasize the fun factor. Pullen encourages both parents and kids to get out of their heads and into their bodies. “Concentrating on breath, posture, sensation and location all help make running mindful,” he suggests. “The important thing is to show up. It’s about participation, not breaking personal bests,” Pullen continues. Kids can play a 22

game while running, such as silently counting steps, trees or other runners.” Mindfulness can also include sharing how it feels to run and meeting challenges along the way. Bloom suggests tuning in to nature. “Being in beautiful surroundings or watching for animals can promote mindfulness,” he says. “It can be spiritual.”

Safe Start

For beginners, experts recommend approaching running as a desirable pastime and adopting a slow, easy pace. “Always make running fun, not a chore,” encourages Bloom. “Frame it as being outside, playing and sharing with friends and family. Make a game of it as much as possible.” Whether a family chooses to run in the park or in a community race, experts stress the importance of not setting goals. “Make it pleasurable. Don’t worry about time and distance. Start with short distances, maybe a block or two for novice runners or very young children,” advises running coach Jeremy Sanders, from Winchester, Virginia. “Be patient. Some days, the kids will get cramps. They may whine or get moody. Other days, they will be happy and content. Don’t let one bad run ruin the opportunity to try again another time.” Running coaches and seasoned runners agree that it is wise to tailor runs according to age and fitness levels. “Kids can begin at school age, 5 or 6; but start them with a few minutes and then add more, up to 15 minutes to a half an hour or so a few days a week. Always mix in sprints for short attention spans. Keep it simple. No fancy running shoes are needed when starting, just regular sneakers,” advises Bloom. “For teens, 30 to 45 minutes at a time a few times a week is fine, provided that they have bona fide running shoes.”

Inspiration

Finding inspiration as a family can include running for worthy causes; most communities host charity runs. “This can become a focal point for getting in shape, raising money and running for the greater good, not just yourself,” says Bloom. Mindful running presents regular opportunities to explore new places, focus on details that often go unnoticed and make exercise an active meditation for all involved. “Show kids how to notice what is going on around them when they run,” suggests Pullen. “You can read up and educate yourselves on trees, geology or the change of seasons so they feel a powerful sense of connection and freedom.” Whether running as a family is motivated by a desire to stay fit, get someplace or simply share more quality time, being in the present moment is most important. “Life is not about striving all the time,” exhorts Pullen. “Take the kids out. Keep it fun and make it into an adventure.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer, author and multimedia artist. Connect at MarlainaDonato.com. June 2018

The Benefits of Practicing Nia for Exercise by Ann Brueggemann

N

ia, a total mind, body and spirit celebration, focuses on the joy of movement. Since its introduction in 1983, Nia (Neuromuscular Integrative Action) has provided an alternative workout to hard-driving, high impact aerobics programs. To quote Debbie Rosas, Nia co-founder along with Carlos Ayas Rosas, “Connecting with physical sensation is how you begin to live a conscious life, to learn about yourself and work out in a way that’s respectful to your body.” In creating Nia, the founders integrated nine movement forms, creating a dynamic synergy: martial arts (taekwondo, aikido and tai chi), dance arts (jazz, modern and Duncan dance), and healing arts (yoga, the Alexander technique and Feldenkrais). Nia is danced barefoot—unless participants need footwear for individual reasons—to the tune of varied music and rhythms in comfortable, yet vigorous, 55-minute routines. Nia’s international cadre of faculty trainers and choreographers have produced a library of routines available to all licensed instructors, who 24

Inland Northwest

are also encouraged to craft their own routines. During every routine, three levels of intensity are described and demonstrated, and participants choose the most comfortable way of moving in their own body’s way during their Nia practice.

Why practice Nia?

Nia is a mind-body activity. Instructors encourage participants to use their imagination as they perform the moves. It’s not uncommon to hear phrases encouraging visualizations such as “clear the clouds” or sense the back of your neck” or “circle step around a starfish laying on that warm beach.” Participants who spend their days living in their heads in stressful occupations can benefit from letting go of their mind-directed routines and give in to sensation and their body’s way. Nia is a complete practice. The 52 Nia moves, building blocks of all Nia workouts, were designed to deliver fitness results, and also fulfill therapeutic needs. They are broken down into three categories— the base,

inwAwakenings.com

the core and the upper extremities—and address all parts of the body, from a heel lead to a front kick, hip bumps to spinal rolls, palm directions to finger flicks—to name a few. Nia helps maintain flexibility, agility, mobility, stability and strength (“FAMS”). Nia participants focused on aging and related body issues will experience how the “FAMS” evolve via their practice. From the moment of “stepping in” to a workout and leaving all thoughts and distractions behind, through the warm up and “get moving” parts of the routine, to the cool down, floor play and final “stepping out,” Nia encourages participants to remain aware and sensitive to their body’s way during this sensation-focused and fun fusion workout.
