“Necessity is the mother of invention. A need or problem encourages creative effort to meet the need or solve the problem.” ~ Plato “At seventeen, I enlisted in the Marine Corps. At Camp Lejeune, I drank water contaminated with carcinogenic substances which gave me cancer. The Chemotherapy destroyed the cartilage in my cervical spine. The pain became so intense, I felt I would not be able to work much longer as a Physical Therapist.

Only $14.95

Hence, the creation of Chazael Lotion.” Kevin Sgroi, PT Creator of Chazael Lotion

“Chazael lotion is amazing! After being shot six times on March 6, 2016, nothing helped alleviate the severe swelling in my feet until my physical therapist gave me this lotion. He said it works equally well in relieving the symptoms of arthritis, muscle spasms, and increasing flexibility in joints plagued by arthritis. Please try this product!”

“When someone would say ‘make a fist’ I could only chuckle and give them my flat hand with fingers slightly curved. One day, I was very blessed to be treated with Chazael Lotion! Now I can make a complete fist with my right hand and almost a complete one with my left. The greatest benefit of this lotion is being PAIN FREE!”

Kathleen P., Hayden “Chazael, the essential oil based serum used by Kevin in his physical therapy treatments, is nothing short of a miracle. It provides incredible relief to my swollen tissues, aching muscles and arthritic joints. To see the rest of my testimonial, go to Chazael-Lotion.com.”

Local Gluten Free Flour That Tastes Great and Gives Back

T

he creators of Flour Farm Organic Gluten Free Flour Blend, Dave DuPree and Teri Delany, are committed to not only creating an organic gluten-free flour that bakes well and tastes great, but to supporting and feeding families in the Inland Northwest region, especially those with food intolerances. “We are extremely invested in giving back to our community which is why we are donating 50 percent of all proceeds from Flour Farm purchased through our website to 2nd Harvest Food Bank,” says Delany. “There are so many parents and kids in our area with food allergies and gluten intolerances and we are passionate about raising awareness that healthy cooking is accessible and gluten free can taste delicious.” DuPree and Delany recently launched their gluten-free Flour Farm business after DuPree sold his successful restaurant, Latah Bistro, and latte stand, Latah Latte. “We believe in the benefits of clean, gluten-free eating and wanted to create a product with integrity that would become the foundation for delicious, gluten-free food,” says DuPree. Delany, a skilled baker and formulator of the flour blend, created a recipe section on the Flour Farm website that includes a variety of family and customer-tested baked goods, such as muffins, pizza and pie crust, cupcakes, carrot cake, pancakes, tortillas, bread, cookies and more. “All the recipes on our website are ones we use in our own home,” she says. Flour Farm is made up of five organic flours ethically sourced in northern California, Thailand, Italy and the Philippines, and include organic sweet white and brown rice flour as well as tapioca, almond and coconut flours. In addition, Flour Farm flour freezes easily, making creating and storing gluten-free food convenient and easy for families on the go. To learn more and to purchase Flour Farm Organic Gluten Free Flour Blend go to Flour.Farm and click “buy” where you will be redirected to Amazon.com. Two-pound bag: $14.49; 25-pound bag: $127. Joshua Tree Physical Therapy Keeps Patients On the Move by Sheila Julson

K

evin Sgroi, a physical therapist and founder of Joshua Tree Physical Therapy and Chazael Lotion, in Hayden, Idaho, believes that attention to detail and personable, individualized service is behind his success in keeping patients active. Owning a physical therapy practice that is independent from a large hospital or healthcare group allows him to spend time with each individual and go that extra mile to help them achieve wellness. A native of Jersey City, New Jersey, Sgroi has worked as a physical therapist for 23 years. He opened Joshua Tree in August 2003 where he specializes in outpatient orthopedic and post-surgical rehabilitation. Joshua Tree also offers rehabilitation for elderly patients, including balance and strength training. Offering more than just therapeutic exercises, Joshua Tree Physical Therapy also utilizes laser therapy, ultrasound, anodyne light treatment and a balance machine, and they have certified massage therapists on site. Sgroi’s treatment plans also include myofascial release—a tech12

nique that involves applying gentle pressure to the myofascial connective tissue to relieve restrictions, restore motion and ease pain. Sgroi says that many orthopedic problems, particularly issues with joint pain and dysfunction, are because the muscles in the joint area have tightened. His approach begins with massage therapy to decrease muscle tension while increasing blood flow, so the muscles relax. “Once that’s done, I’ll start the work on the patient and look for trigger points that are very sensitive, and then I’ll release those points with acupressure or mild physical therapy. Manipulation on the joint becomes quite easy once everything is relaxed,” he says. The therapeutic process continues with retraining the muscles to correct imbalances, thus helping the joint to work properly. The patient then goes through strengthening programs orchestrated by Sgroi. In addition to Sgroi’s physical therapy modalities, he also offers Chazael pain relief lotion, an all-natural, therapeutic cream that can relieve muscle pain, arthritis, tendonitis, back pain and more. 2010, Sgroi was diagnosed with leukemia; an illness that he said resulted from drinking poisoned water for four years while he was in the United States Marines. “I received intravenous chemotherapy for 168 hours straight,” he recalls, “and once that was over, the devastating effects of chemotherapy began to surface. It attacked the right side of my body, damaged my nerves and ate away cartilage on the right side of my neck. My right arm was paralyzed for almost two years, and the neck pain excruciating.” Sgroi started playing with essential oils and lotions in his office, and he experimented on himself. By using the concoction that would eventually become Chazael on his neck, along with prayer, Sgroi says he was eventually able to work again. “I started mixing and researching elements and using essential oils referenced in the Bible,” he says. “It took seven years and a tedious process to come up with right formula. The temperature had to be just right so the lotion wouldn’t separate or coagulate.” Sgroi told his patients about the lotion’s success, and he asked them if they would be willing to try it. “They started using it and asked if I was selling it. The lotion wasn’t available for sale at the time, but they said, ‘you need to sell it.’ We now sell about 50 to 60 bottles per week; people love it, and what it does is amazing.” As a guy who wanted to become a police officer prior to pursuing a career in physical therapy, Sgroi is happy with his choice of profession and finds his work gratifying. “The Lord has given me the keys for this establishment, and I can run it as I see fit,” he says. “I can spend that extra time with a patient, whereas if I worked for somebody else, that would not happen. We can go the extra mile without any restrictions placed on us, and we work in the best interest of each patient.” Joshua Tree Physical Therapy and Chazael Lotion are located at 8300 Wayne Dr., Hayden, ID. SIXTH AVENUE MEDICAL PHARMACY A Prescription for Whole Wellness

Zach Wilson

by Sheila Julson

Sixth Avenue Medical Pharmacy team

Pharmacists specialize in custom compounding

harmacist Erik Nelson sees a future in personalized medicine. As owner of the independent Sixth Avenue Medical Pharmacy, he’s shifting the pharmacy’s focus to a whole wellness model through services such as compounding, specialized packaging, functional medicine and more. Nelson bought Sixth Avenue Medical Pharmacy in 2013 after he graduated from Washington State University College of Pharmacy. Nelson’s ownership of the pharmacy actually began as an academic project; during his first year of school, he signed up for National Community Pharmacy Association’s annual business plan competition, which entailed finding a pharmacy in the entrant’s community and creating a business plan. Nelson’s team partnered with Jerry Stocker, who founded Sixth Avenue Medical Pharmacy with his wife, Marilyn, in 1964. When Nelson and his peers ended up winning the competition, he asked Stocker what his plan was after retirement. “He planned to just sell it to a chain pharmacy, so I talked to my wife and agreed we could probably make a go of it. We talked with Jerry, and from that point on I worked as an intern. We basically got the whole deal crafted and done while I was in pharmacy school,” Nelson says.

Sixth Avenue Medical Pharmacy offers traditional pharmacy prescription services, and with Nelson at the helm, he’s gone all in on custom compounding services. “It is personalized medicine,” says Nelson, who has invested heavily in stateof-the-art equipment for their compounding services. “A dose that works for you might not work for your neighbor or your sister. I think that the future of medicine is having it personalized just for you, and you get better outcomes. People often have trouble with commercial dosage forms due to fillers, dyes and other stuff that can make some people sick, so we can take all that out and make it hypoallergenic, make it taste better, or even change the dosage form.” Compounding can also change the delivery methods of pharmaceuticals to capsules, transdermal creams, lozenges, gummies or liquid form, whichever the patient finds easiest. Sixth Avenue Medical Pharmacy also offers compounding services for pet medicine. Sixth Avenue Medical Pharmacy provides specialty packaging to assist people that take a lot of medications. “We put dosages together into blister cards that group all the pills according to how and when they should be taken,” affirms Nelson. In addition, the pharmacy has earned accreditation

through the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB), which guarantees they are following the highest quality control standards and sending product out for third-party testing to independently verify that everything they make is correct and to proper specifications. For customers seeking nutritional supplements, Sixth Avenue Medical Pharmacy carries professional grade lines including Thorne Research, Ortho Molecular Products, Pure Encapsulations and Klaire Labs. To gain more knowledge in the area of natural medicine and anti-aging, Nelson completed a fellowship through the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. “We’re trying to incorporate all of that functional medicine knowledge into our pharmacy. If you can take a supplement and avoid a high blood pressure medication or a cholesterol medication, that can be a better choice than a prescription drug in some cases,” he says. The pharmacy also features an on staff registered dietician to help guide customers on healthier eating habits and choosing the right supplements to meet their needs. Being an independent pharmacy, Nelson confirms that not only are their products personalized, but so is their customer service. “We know customers by their first names when they come in the door,” he says. “I can’t tell you how many times I had a customer come in and tell me how they couldn’t even get through to their pharmacist at a big-box store if they had a question. So many corporate pharmacies are driven only by numbers, and that’s just wrong.” Sixth Avenue Medical Pharmacy gives back to the community by sponsoring health and fitness events, including a mini-triathlon for kids, pet shows to support their pet compounding services, and various other community events. Sixth Avenue Medical Pharmacy is located at 508 W. 6th Ave Ste 104., Spokane. For more information, call 509-455-9345 or visit SixthAvenuePharmacy.com. See ad, page 19. Six Benefits of Riding a Recumbent Bike Recumbent bicycles are gaining more and more popularity due to their ergonomic design which allows a rider’s weight to be evenly distributed over a larger area, thus greatly reducing the risk of injury. Here are six reasons to consider owning a recumbent bike: 1. Easy on the lower back. Recumbent bikes allow a rider to sit back utilizing better spinal posture, as opposed to an upright bike where the rider is hunched over handlebars, putting more strain on the back. 2. Gentle on all joints. The bucket seat of a recumbent bike supports a rider’s lower back and protects knees and ankles from injurious impact. 3. Large, comfortable seat. Seat comfort tends to be a recumbent bike’s most A happy Northwest Recumbent Cycles attractive feature. An upright bike has a smaller seat that can be very uncomcustomer fortable for many riders. 4. Safety. Recumbent bikes are safer because riders cannot stand up on the pedals which eliminates most of the injuries that can occur on an upright bike. 5. Reduces pain and builds strength. For those with back and hip issues or those with rheumatoid arthritis, a recumbent bike may be easier to use due to the reclining position that allows a rider’s weight to spread over their back and buttocks. 6. Accessibility to all. Recumbent bikes provide very low impact to the body, allowing people with disabilities, arthritis, balance issues and other health problems to get out and ride. Forever Flexible Keep Joints Naturally Healthy by Lisa Marshall

Creaky knees, sore hips, shoulder pain or a stiff neck can be a thing of the past.

T

hirty-seven percent of American adults 18 and older suffer from arthritis—a catch-all term for a dozen varieties of joint disease—according to the nonprofit Arthritis Foundation. One in two men and two in three women 65 or older may have it, estimates a recent Boston University study. Due to increasing obesity rates and autoimmune disorders, it’s also impacting 8 million Millennials, reports the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “I’m seeing higher rates, more severe 16

cases and more of them in younger people. It’s an epidemic no one is talking about,” says Dr. Susan Blum, a Rye Brook, New York, physician and author of Healing Arthritis: Your 3-Step Guide to Conquering Arthritis Naturally. About 65 percent of patients try to treat joint pain with daily anti-inflammatory drugs that can damage the stomach and kidneys. Many work and exercise less due to pain, making arthritis the leading cause of disability. More than 1 million undergo expensive, risky surgeries annually, with hip

The term “arthritis” can conjure images of aging cartilage worn thin by years of overuse. Yet this common type, known as osteoarthritis, is just one of many joint pain culprits. Rheumatoid arthritis, which manifests in swelling and pain in the hands, wrists, feet or toes, arises when the body’s immune system attacks itself, destroying tissue around the joints. Spondyloarthritis inflames the spine and sometimes the eyes and gut. Infections like Lyme disease, parvovirus and hepatitis B can also ignite arthritic joint pain. Inflammation may exacerbate them all, so an anti-inflammatory program can typically provide relief, says Blum. Serious forms might require more aggressive treatments; a visit with an integrative clinician is an important first step.

Get Weight in Check

About one-third of obese people have arthritis, and research shows that with every pound lost, joint pain diminishes— the lighter the load, the less the pressure on joints. A Wake Forest University study of knee osteoarthritis patients showed that with each 10 pounds lost, 40 pounds of pressure is lifted from the knee. “But it’s not simply about the load on the joints,” says Blum. Fat cells release compounds called

and knee replacements performed twice as often now as in 2000. Although conventional medicine maintains that drugs, surgery and reduced activity are inevitable, a new generation of clinicians disagree. They’ve seen how by losing weight, fighting inflammation with wholesome food and supplements, exercising smart and exploring science-backed integrative therapies, patients can manage the root causes of joint pain and find relief. “We have many tools at our disposal to halt or slow the progression of arthritis so most people never have to have surgery,” says Doctor of Naturopathy Casey Seenauth, a staff physician at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine Pain Relief Center, in Tempe, Arizona.

inflammatory cytokines, which can boost inflammation and pain. And new research from the University of Rochester, in New York, suggests that obesity may also impair the gut microbiome (beneficial bacteria lining the gastrointestinal tract), further exacerbating arthritis. “There is no doubt that the gut bacteria are involved in the onset and perpetuation of inflammation and pain in arthritis,” says Blum. When researchers fed mice the equivalent of a “cheeseburger and milkshake” diet for 12 weeks, doubling their body fat, they found more pro-inflammatory bacteria in their colon, more cartilage deterioration than in lean mice and more inflammation in their knees.

Healing the Gut Heals Joints

Blum explains that dysbiosis, an overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the intestinal tract, can damage its fragile lining, allowing bits of bacteria to enter the bloodstream and ignite an autoimmune response. Dysbiosis can be kick-started by antibiotics, drugs like proton pump inhibitors, bad diet or stress, says Blum, who battled autoimmune arthritis after her son had a traumatic accident. For curbing arthritis through the gut microbiome, the science is young. A few small human studies conducted in China and Finland suggest that ingesting specific strains of Lactobacillus (including casei, acidophilus, reuteri and rhamnosus) and Bifidobacterium (bifidum and infantis) may decrease inflammation and pain associated with arthritis. In the University of Rochester study,

overweight mice fed prebiotics (indigestible fibers that good bacteria feed on) had less arthritis progression. Blum recommends taking antimicrobial herbs like oregano oil to heal a gut overgrown with bad bacteria and a highquality probiotic supplement to replenish good bacteria. She also suggests ditching processed food and products with refined sugar, along with known allergens like gluten, soy and dairy, which can spawn inflammation. Avoid nightshade vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes and peppers, which anecdotally have been suggested to aggravate joint pain. Overall, strive for a plant-based diet high in fiber, colorful, antioxidant-rich vegetables and “good” fats. One recent Michigan State University study found that when osteoarthritis patients switched to a plant-based diet for six weeks, they experienced less pain than those in the meat-eating control group.

Exercise Smart

When joint pain begins to flare up, a carefully chosen workout may be exactly what’s needed for relief. A.J. Gregg, a chiropractor in Flagstaff, Arizona, says, “There is an element of ‘use-it-or-lose it’.” The proper exercise depends partly on which joints are affected. He notes that properly executed strength training exercises like lifting weights can stabilize muscles around joints, easing strain and preventing arthritis from accelerating. Low-impact aerobic exercises like cycling or swimming can fuel the production and flushing of fluids through the joints without overloading them. Tai chi

can improve range of motion. Even running, long falsely maligned as a precursor to arthritis, can help prompt cartilage cells to divide and replenish faster, research suggests. A study of 75,000 runners by researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, in California, found that they were less likely to develop osteoarthritis of the knee than less active people. A subsequent paper by University of Illinois researchers found that while each running step levels more force on joints than a walking step, the foot hits the ground less often, so when it comes to wear and tear, it approximates the effect of walking. “Running doesn’t set people up for earlier development of osteoarthritis, and can in fact be protective,” says Gregg, stressing that proper form, a soft running surface and moderation are all important.

Regenerative Injections

For more advanced cases of osteoarthritis, Seenauth recommends regenerative injections such as prolotherapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. For PRP, doctors draw some of the patient’s blood and spin it down with a centrifuge to isolate platelets loaded with growth-promoting compounds. Then, they inject the platelets into the joint. A study of 78 patients with knee osteoarthritis published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine found that those receiving one or two PRP injections had significantly less pain and better function six months later, while the placebo group worsened. In prolotherapy, doctors inject natural substances like dextrose and saline into the joint two to three times for

Easy Ways to Keep Joints Healthy by Kevin Sgroi

D

id you know that there are 650 muscles, 360 joints, and 206 bones in the human body? And they all work in synergy together, to help keep one another healthy. It is vital to maintain proper muscle balance around joints to help preserve healthy joints throughout the body. With 360 joints in the human body, it’s no wonder millions of Americans suffer with joint problems. While one of the most common conditions is arthritis, there are other factors that can adversely affect the joint and cause deterioration. Thankfully, degenerative changes in the joint can be avoided by employing proper posture, body mechanics, and proper muscle balance around the joints. Although any joint in the body is susceptible to developing degenerative changes, the more planes of motion and freedom of movement in a joint makes that particular joint more susceptible to damaging wear and tear. This can set the stage for small degenerative changes in a joint that, at first, has no effects. But in time the damage to the joint becomes more severe and problems develop such as pain, swelling, decreased range of motion, and a decrease in the ability to perform activities of daily living pain-free. Some of the more mobile joints include the cervical spine, low back and shoulders. Although we can develop degenerative changes in the hip, knee and ankle, these joints generally present less of a problem for patients than the more mobile joints of the spine and shoulder girdle. The cervical spine is especially vulnerable to degenerative changes. Since the advent of computers, cell phones and video games, people have developed extremely poor habits that significantly impact posture and muscle imbalance throughout the cervical spine and shoulder girdle. There are numerous muscles that influence posture and movement of the cervical spine. Poor posture significantly impacts

six to eight weeks to promote production of collagen and other tissue-regenerating compounds. “Rather than inject a steroid, which provides a short-term fix by suppressing the immune response, we inject a concentrated solution that ignites the body’s natural healing response,” says Seenauth.

A Mind-Body Approach

muscle imbalance in and around the cervical spine causing unneeded stress on facet joints. Proper posture leads to normal muscle balance around the joints. When muscle imbalances do occur, the first thing that should be considered is retraining of the muscle and not a general strengthening of the musculature in and around the cervical spine. Strength training will only tighten muscles that are already in a shortened and tight position. A good physical therapist can guide their client through proper retraining techniques and strengthening techniques to assure proper alignment not only in the cervical spine, but in other areas such as the shoulder, knee and low back. However, ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,’ so don’t overlook the small warning signs of degenerative joint changes. We can all significantly impact adverse effects on our joints with proper posture, body mechanics and exercise routines. Those that have not incorporated an exercise routine in their daily activities should consult with a health care professional before pursuing such an endeavor. Kevin Sgroi, PT, is the creator of Chazael Lotion and owner of Joshua Tree Physical Therapy at 8300 Wayne Drive in Hayden, Idaho. Natural joint pain remedies also encompass acupuncture and meditation. In the UK, a University of York meta-review of 114 studies exploring 22 integrative or complementary therapies for arthritis, including strength and aerobic exercise training, found acupuncture to have the most studies completed and the most promising results. “Acupuncture can be considered as one of the more effective physical treatments for alleviating osteoarthritis knee pain in the short term,” concluded the authors. University of Auckland researchers, in New Zealand, recruited 42 rheumatoid arthritis patients and assigned half to a program of mindfulness-based stress reduction, described by researchers as “the cultivation of nonjudgmental attention to unwanted thoughts, feelings and bodily experiences via meditation.” While the meditation group saw no change in levels of inflammatory markers in the blood or the number of swollen joints, they did report significantly less morning stiffness, tenderness and pain. The patients, in essence, trained themselves to experience their symptoms differently. “Pain is not just about nerves detecting a noxious stimulant and sending the signal to your brain. The brain has a whole system for processing these signals, and is also informed by your experiences, emotions and cognition,” says Seenauth, who recommends mindfulness meditation to all of his patients. “With the right nutrition, therapies and state of mind,” he says, “you can significantly reduce the impact joint pain has on your life.” Lisa Marshall is a freelance health writer in Boulder, CO. A Workout that Protect the Joints by Jennifer Wiglesworth

W

ho would believe that an exercise could actually protect the joints? Popular sports like baseball, tennis, football, basketball and soccer foundationally rely on the movement of running, which stresses the joints. These stress triggers are mostly derived from repetition of movements, commonly affecting both the knee and ankle joints. Over time, these stresses usually lead to injury which leads to inability to perform the aforementioned sports. For an athlete, or passionate player, this can be devastating. However, the great news is there are exercises that promote joint health. The most popular exercises promoting joint health have historically been Pilates, yoga and swimming. They each protect the joints in their own varying ways. Pilates focuses on core balance and takes the pressure completely out of the

joints. Yoga focuses on breathing techniques, balance and isometric strength. Swimming, although most definitely the most fast-paced of the three, relies on the water to resist gravity and lighten the strain on the joints. Although all three are great in their own right, a new workout has gained popularity in the joint-health world—barre. Although technically the barre workouts have been around since circa 1970s,

they have just recently gained popularity. Barre fuses the best of yoga, Pilates and dance-exercise into one high-intensity, lowimpact workout. Barre workouts appeal to everyone based on their results and are particularly attractive to athletes for their high-intensity. Finding an exercise that protects the joints, along with the high-impact appeal, creates the best of both worlds for athletes. This is especially true for athletes who have suffered from injuries. Whether one is an athlete, an avidexerciser, or simply seeking a workout that protect the joints, the great news is there are options out there. At the end of the day, we all get one body to work out, so let’s do what we can to protect our joints, while enjoying all the benefits of a great exercise program. Jennifer Wiglesworth is the owner of BarreU located at 195 E Hazel Ave. in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. For more information, call 503-720-9451 or visit BarreUcda.com. See ad, page 17.

Big Changes Made Easier

Eating superfoods slows inflammation, a major factor in myriad health conditions, and fosters an internal environment that opposes cancer cells. According to Greger, incorporating nutrient-dense foods into our daily diet need not feel like a chore or sacrifice. “If you eat junk, not only are you feeding your precious body crummy fuel, but you’re missing out on choices that are health-promoting,” says Greger, whose free Dr. Greger’s Daily Dozen phone app helps make the switch easy and intriguing. “I’m a fan of techniques for getting more plants on our plates,” says Greger. “Try using meat as more of a condiment or flavoring. Loma Linda, California, are now offering resident physicians specialized studies in lifestyle medicine based on therapeutic applications of diet. Founding member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, international speaker and bestselling author Dr. Michael Greger, whose How Not to Die book now has a companion cookbook, is at the forefront of the growing conscious eating for wellness movement. The conclusions he’s drawn from his own practice are supported by the largest study to date on disease risk factors, the Global Burden of Disease, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “The number one cause of death and cause of disability in the United States is our diet. Genetics loads the gun, but lifestyle pulls the trigger. Genes are not our destiny,” Greger says.

make them more plant-friendly. For instance, try replacing the taco meat with lentils spiced with traditional taco seasonings.” Other helpful tips include tapping a family member, friend or colleague eager to support healthy choices. It can be difficult to be the only one eating healthfully in any group, but having a support system can help make the transition easier.

Superfoods as Allies

According to Jennifer Di Noia, Ph.D., of William Paterson University of New Jersey, in Wayne, superfoods have 17 nutrients in common that are critical to the prevention of chronic disease, based on findings of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Institute of Medicine. Phytochemicals are the body’s best source of antioxidants to help fortify cells against cancer and premature aging, as well as reduce the risk of heart disease and some types of dementia. Leafy greens such as collards, beet tops and certain lettuces, along with cruciferous vegetables, pack the most punch. Surprisingly, popular kale came in at number 15 on the CDC list of 41 superfoods, scoring only 49 out of 100 points for phytonutrient value. Results of an in vitro study published by the journal Nutrition Research spotlight the cholesterol-reducing benefits of steamed collard greens and their ability to

boost the body’s natural cholesterol blockers by 13 percent more than the pharmaceutical drug Cholestyramine.

Results as Reward

Greger reminds us that changing our diet can be initially daunting, but better health is worth the effort, as exemplified by one of his leading cases. “I met with an obese, middle-aged man with Type 2 diabetes in the beginning stages of diabetic neuropathy. After a month of being on a plant-based diet, he had reversed his diabetes and his nerve pain disappeared. Within three months, he no longer

needed medications for high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Two decades later, he remains vigorous and free of chronic disease.” Greger’s greatest reward is seeing people enjoying better health. His joy is evident when he confides, “Stories of people regaining health charge my batteries and make me jump out of bed in the morning.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer and author of several books, including Multidimensional Aromatherapy. rushes to hug him, grinning while his dad tousles his hair. Chapman’s daughter often calls out, “Dad, come into my room. I want to show you something.” This is how he communicates with each child in their primary love language. Parents learn their children’s preferred communication style by observing their behavior, noticing how they express love and listening to them. They can also offer options and track results. For example: n Would you like to take the dog to the park (quality time) or for me to help you study for a test (acts of service)? n Would you like to wrestle (touch) or shop for your new shoes (gift)? “Ideally, we offer heavy doses of the

child’s primary language and sprinkle in the others,” says Chapman. “Children who feel loved respond better to suggestions and discipline. They also learn how to express their feelings.”

Avoid Unreal Idealizing

Some parents carry a mental snapshot of their ideal child, perhaps envisioning a kid that is into sports or even-tempered or academically gifted. Often, that picture is very different from the actual child. The first step to truly accepting the child is to allow ourselves to feel whatever authentic feelings pop up. The parent might think, “I love my son, but am struggling; I adore sports and may never get to share that with him.” “Give yourself time to process disappointment,” advises Susan Stiffelman, a Los Angeles marriage and family therapist, mother of one and author of Parenting Without Power Struggles: Raising Joyful,

Resilient Kids While Staying Cool, Calm and Connected. “Then identify the things you love about your kids and share those with them.” As just one example, we might convey that we love the sound of their voice and how gentle they are with the baby. “Appreciating our children as they are is one way to keep our hearts open,” says Stiffelman.

Focus on the Good

When Barbara Unell, a parent educator and author of Discipline With Love and Limits: Calm, Practical Solutions to the 43 Most Common Childhood Behavior Problems, birthed twins, she was initially daunted by the work of caring for them. Then she began simplifying by focusing on the “wow” factors. “Being a parent speaks to the core of our humanity. Experiencing the growth and development of a human being is miraculous. I started looking at parenting through that lens,” says Unell, who lives in the Leawood, Kansas, area. Asha Dornfest, of Portland, Oregon, a podcaster, co-author of Minimalist Parenting: Enjoy Modern Family Life More by Doing Less and mother of two, relates, “I paid more attention to my values and my family’s unique needs and was less influenced by parenting experts, social pressures and well-meaning peers.” Dornfest explored her own values by asking, “What did I learn from my parents?” and, “How do I want my family to be different?” She also practiced trusting her intuition. “Even when I’m not certain I’m right, I know I love my children, I’m doing my best, and I’ll make adjustments if necessary,” she says.

Create Rhythm and Rituals

Rhythmic activities ease the anxiety of family transitions and furnish warm solidarity, consistency and connectedness. “Increasing the predictability of meals, bedtime and other rituals also improves family life,” says Davina Muse, a mental health counselor and mother of two from Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

Muse serves as training director for Simplicity Parenting, a program based on Kim John Payne’s book Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids that offers a connective ritual families can merge with mealtimes. Each person describes a “rose” (one good thing from the day) or a “thorn” (one challenging thing) and a “bud” (one thing they’re anticipating). Such sharing builds a family connection and helps kids discuss difficult issues, notes Muse. Also, “Describing the bud lifts everyone’s mood.” Every Friday evening, the Dornfests share a Sabbath dinner, a low-key way for them to gather and talk. “This ritual adds a rhythm to our week and anchors us,” says Dornfest.

Elect De-Stress Over Distress

Everyone can sometimes become overscheduled and overwhelmed; a balance between scheduled time and downtime is necessary to well-being. In her daily check-in, Dornfest confers with herself and her husband, inquiring, “How are things going? Are they too hectic? Is our schedule energizing or draining?” She advises, “When I feel like I’m riding a runaway train, I slow down. There seem to be so many ‘shoulds’ in parenting; we instead need to discover what our family loves.” Before enlisting a child for an activity, Dornfest suggests we ask why it’s important: Are you making up for your own missed opportunities as a child? Are you worried your child will miss out? Do you equate these lessons with being a good and caring parent? Parenting is more than checking off lists and tasks. It’s about being connected with children. Build in playtime, roughhousing, chase each other around the yard, toss balloons or balls together, blow bubbles and welcome opportunities for laughter.

outside to play. “Nature is very soothing,” says Muse. “Climbing trees, searching for rocks and pine cones, playing with dirt, sticks, water and leaves all offer healing down time.” To escape from worries and distractions, Stiffelman suggests three or four minutes of meditation or simply designated quiet time. For little ones, lay a stuffed teddy bear on the child’s tummy and have them notice how the animal is moving. A parent and child can also be aware of the sounds they are hearing, plus incorporate a little mindful breathing into the bedtime ritual.

Know the Power of Space

Most parents think their children would go crazy if half their toys and books were removed, but this isn’t true. “My trainers and I have worked with thousands of parents on decluttering, and the results have been powerful,” says Muse. The Simplicity Parenting approach encour-

ages parents to discard broken toys, give away anything no longer being played with and attractively store current playthings. She observes, “As you decrease the quantity of toys and clutter, you increase the child’s attention and capacity for deep play.”

Build Resilience

Simplifying parenting means releasing the notion that children must be happy, well-behaved and delighted with life and their parents at all times. Unell used the daily multitasking challenges with her twins as exercises in developing resilience and modeling these skills for them. If children spill milk, the parent comments, “No big deal. We all spill things.” When there’s a minor accident, “Let’s just get towels and clean it up.” A resilient attitude is, “Something goes wrong, we fix it.” It’s also about being flexible and coping with disappointment. “To build resilience, parents need to feel comfortable in the presence of an

unhappy child,” says Stiffelman. “If parents don’t allow children to be disappointed, kids can become rigid, lack confidence and struggle with unreasonable expectations.” During meltdowns or disappointments, she recommends sitting quietly, listening, and then empathizing and helping put the children’s feelings into words. “This is not the time to lecture or advise,” she says. “Upset children can’t really listen.” Yet, they can be heard—a key way to help them mature. Parents that learn to simplify happily discover that their children feel calmer and more loved, socially and emotionally adept, and resilient. Concepts focused on creating connections, rather than parenting perfection, are easy to weave into everyday life.
