May 2 Workshop Explores Soul Mates

Get Health Back on Track with Colonics

J

A

fter a winter of “cocooning”—that is, eating too much and moving too little—most of us look forward to spring as an opportunity to detox and get active again. Rachel Mann, a certified colon therapist with 24 years’ experience, says the season always brings an uptick of clients eager to do some personal spring cleaning. “A colonic is important way to get your health back on track,” she says. Colon hydrotherapy—the modern version of a technique first used by the ancient Egyptians—allows a small amount of water to flow into the colon, gently stimulating the release of softened waste from the large intestine without the use of drugs. “A colonic session helps with headaches, bloating, parasites, candida, constipation, bloating and gas,” Mann says. “A healthy colon produces vitamins B and K and absorbs water. A healthy digestive tract helps support a healthy immune system.” Mann says that most people find a colonic session comfortable, and that the number of sessions needed depends on the individual. “Every person’s goals and needs will differ,” she says. “People have their own ongoing cleansing, toning and rebuilding regimens, and I recommend that colonics become part of it for optimum health and well-being.” Rachel Mann is the owner of Rachel’s Waters of Life, established in 1990. Her offices are located at 1145 Second Ave, #1 (near 59th St.), NY, NY. For more information, call 212.317.0467.

udith Costa, a certified Love & Life coach, will lead a workshop in “How to Find Your Soul Mate” May 2 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 240 East 53rd St. (next door to the Quest Bookshop). Costa has been researching soul mates for more than 14 years, and her work involves teachings about what is a real soul mate connection, how to improve self-love, and how to manifest the kind of relationship we want and deserve. Participants will learn the meaning of a soul mate relationship and how to prepare for one; the three-step process to attract their soul mate; tools and techniques to manifest love; and how to identify and release patterns and unconscious beliefs that prevent them from attracting the kind of relationship they’re seeking. Costa has a master’s degree in analytical psychology and psychotherapy. She works with groups and individuals, both online and in person, to help them overcome inner blocks to love and get to know themselves better. She uses various techniques, including coaching, astrology, past-life regression, the Akashic Records and dream interpretation. The workshop fee of $125 includes a manual and journal. For questions, call 646.204.4535 or email judithmcosta@hotmail.com. For registration or more information, visit JudithMCosta.com.

Fundraiser Helps Launch Dance Program For Children with Special Needs

T

wo years ago, Alexey Gavrilov, founder of Gavrilov Dance, met a 9-yearold Seattle girl with a physical disability and a seemingly impossible dream: she wanted to learn ballroom dance. Although he worried about her limitations, Gavrilov took her on as a student, beginning with the simplest of concepts: “Listen to the music, and move.” Three months later, the girl’s dream was fulfilled. She danced on stage for the first time, and her 200-person audience gave her a standing ovation. Now Gavrilov has a dream of his own: to provide a similar opportunity to children with special needs in New Jersey and New York. The ballroom dance program would be patterned on ones he’s established in Seattle and Orange County, California. An inaugural benefit, “Speechless,” will be held May 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hudson Dance Studio to help fund and raise awareness of the program launch. With views of the Manhattan skyline, the studio is just over the Hudson River, accessible by the NY Waterway-Edgwater Ferry Landing stop. Gavrilov says he hopes to help children from both sides of the river reach their creative dreams. “Every child is special and an artist,” he says. “The question is, how do we nurture the artist in children with disabilities? How do we provide them with the skills and opportunities to develop to their utmost potential while keeping their spirits alive? Dance. Dance creates community. Dance focuses on the ability of the individual rather than on the disability. I am committed to creating a dance studio dedicated to serving these amazing children, a place that encourages them to overcome their fears, a place where they develop and strengthen their mind and body while discovering the artist in themselves.” On April 12, Gavrilov Dance will offer the following free private introductory lessons and open classes for children and adults with special needs: open class for ages 6-12, 11-11:45 a.m.; private 30-minute lessons by appointment, noon-4 p.m.; open class for adults, 4:15-5 p.m. Anyone interested in learning about the program or assisting with its launch or the May 16 fundraiser should contact Gavrilov at 201-446-2763. Non-Profits Enter To Win 5K Grant at NY Green Festival

T

he Green Festival Expo, America’s largest and longest-running sustainability and green living event, will take place April 24-26 at the LEED-certified Javits Convention Center, 655 W. 34th St. Held in major cities throughout the United States, the Green Festival is designed as an inspiration and one-stop-shop for people who want to live a more balanced life. It includes presentations by expert speakers, children’s activities, and some 130 exhibitors who will be on hand with healthy and sustainable food, products and services. The festival will culminate with the presentation of its Community Award, which comes with a $5,000 grant, to the best community/environmental project within 60 miles of the city. Qualifying projects must be operated by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Natural Awakenings is one of five judges that will select the winner. The deadline for submissions is April 6; for more info and to submit online, visit GreenFestivals.org and click on "AWARDS" on the gray bar, pull down "COMMUNITY AWARD," then "Apply now for the 2015 Community Award NYC". The featured speaker for this year’s Green Festival Expo will be Antonio Salliant, founder of Planet Greenfest and CEO of Angel Light Pictures, who will discuss his vision and passion for creating energy efficiency in the movie and television industries. Pet owners can browse a special marketplace, Green Pets, that will bring together trusted companies, large and small, and their innovative products representing the best in green living for pets. Last year’s Green Festival attracted 21,000 visitors, local organizers say. This will be the festival’s fifth year in New York, which is on the forefront in reducing energy consumption and has one of highest percentages of green space among US cities. It also has the highest percentage of workers commuting by public transportation, by bicycle or by foot. The city’s sustainability program PlaNYC has helped it achieve the cleanest air in 50 years, adding 865,000 trees and five million feet of reflective rooftop to the urban landscape, and has helped reduce the carbon emissions in the city by 19 percent since 2005. Festival times are Friday from noon to 6 p.m.; Saturday form 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information and to apply for the Community Award visit GreenFestivals.org. natural awakenings

nlike their Eastern counterparts, North American and some European herbalists seek to directly mitigate health issues or facilitate specific bodily functions using particular plants, roots and barks. Native Americans embraced the belief that Mother Nature provides, contending that the herbs of a local environment provide for all of the needs of the people dwelling there. For example, snake weed is prevalent in the Southwest, where encounters with rattlesnakes are frequent. Herbs such as comfrey, arnica and sage, which are found from coast to coast, are used to heal wounds, relieve pain and get rid of parasites, maladies common to people everywhere, according to the Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine. Every culture in the world has developed and maintained a system of healing based on their indigenous plants, relying on these natural pharmaceutical entities for thousands of years. A human that lived 5,000 years ago found preserved in ice in 1991 was carrying herbs and mushrooms to mitigate health conditions that scientists confirmed were present in his body. Despite their effective use for millennia, many modern-day people still question the efficacy and safety of medicinal herbs. Instead of looking to pharmaceutical companies—born of an industry with less than 200 years of experience—to handle our healthcare needs, perhaps the real affordable care act can be found in the plants, roots and barks provided by Mother Nature. Memory Works Better Reading Real Books

R

esearchers from Norway’s Stavanger University and France’s Aix-Marseille Université found that readers remember a story better if it’s on paper. The study tested 50 people that read the same 28-page short story. Half of the group read the paper version and the other half read the story on a Kindle e-reader. The researchers discovered that readers of the digital version could not remember details from the story or reconstruct the plot as well as the group that read the paper copy. The researchers found that the feedback of a Kindle doesn’t provide the same support for mental reconstruction of a story as a print pocket book does. “When you read on paper, you can sense with your fingers a pile of pages on the left growing, and shrinking on the right,” explains Stavanger University’s Anne Mangen, Ph.D. These findings confirm a study performed a year earlier, also led by Mangen. Seventy-two 10th-graders were given text to read either on paper or on a computer screen. The students that read the paper text versions scored significantly higher in reading comprehension testing than those reading digital versions. na-newyorkcity.com

O

ver the past 10 years, the number of my clients who continue to suffer from acne long after puberty has progressively increased. Most of them are women who have tried nearly everything to fix the problem, from over-the-counter and prescription medication to light-based procedures. They finally come to me because they haven’t seen any significant results. Dealing with acne is one of the most complex and prolonged dermatological treatments. It requires a thorough and comprehensive analysis of the factors causing the acne. Established methods and procedures for treatment exist on the market, yet the number of acne sufferers continues to increase. From my experience with patients, I have identified three major reasons people suffer from chronic acne: • an improper treatment approach by professionals • a lack of information about the factors that cause acne, resulting in its continued presence • the use of inappropriate products and tools, resulting in a worsened condition By sharing how I have successfully cured my clients’ acne, I want to help others who are still suffering. The most important notion that people need to understand is that acne is curable. The first step to my approach is to classify the type of acne my client has. Acne can have three main causes: bacterial, hormonal or androgenic. Once I have identified the type, I devise a gradual treatment plan, taking into account the many critical factors that can interfere with treatment. I’ve found that it’s important to help clients understand that getting significant and lasting results takes time and effort. It requires discipline and strict adherence to my prescribed treatment plan. The plan incorporates the following elements: • an individually tailored diet correction • a set of instructions for daily cleaning and nourishing with appropriate products

• stress reduction, usually through relaxation programs like yoga or meditation • the elimination of bad habits (smoking, alcohol, drugs, acid suppressants, antiinflammatories, etc.) • body-cleansing procedures and the rebalancing of gastrointestinal bacteria Diet plays a significant role in treating acne. A number of nutritional foods are available to nourish the skin. Vitamins and minerals work best if they come directly from fruits, vegetables and whole-grain foods, but organic, plant-based supplements can work as well. The vitamins crucial for acne reduction are A, B-complex, C, E, chromium and zinc. In general, people with acne-prone skin should avoid all processed carbs, dairy, corn, sweets, spicy food and soda. Spicy foods, for example, cause a rise in body temperature that starts an inflammatory reaction. Sweets, on the other hand, trigger oil secretion through the skin, and those are the exact oils that trap the dirt and bacteria that cause acne. The most important component in my practice is my clients’ full dedication to and belief in the successful outcome of their treatment. Regardless of the treatments’ duration and the effort required, this is absolutely vital. The belief is what we build together, based on mutual trust and a commitment to excellence. Acne can be painful and psychologically humiliating, and that’s why I have chosen to share my philosophy with you. Over my many years of experience, it has been proven effective by the countless lives I’ve changed through my practice. FREE CONSULT during month of April 2015 when you mention Natural Awakenings. Hope for Our Future by Julianne Hale

W

hen we learn about the condition of our most valuable resource—this spinning planet we call home—we may feel a sense of urgency, desperation or even defeat. Global climate change is a powerful foe, and current efforts may seem like a losing race against time. Yet, mounting evidence suggests that the global community is making progress, giving rise to the possibility that climate change may not be the insurmountable obstacle we once thought. The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) article, “We Can Do This: 10 Reasons there’s Hope for our Climate,” by Dan Upham, summarizes a speech given by EDF President Fred Krupp at the 2014 Aspen Ideas Festival

(Tinyurl.com/HopeForTheClimate). Here are some encouraging highlights. The price of solar energy panels has dropped by 75 percent in the U.S. since 2008, and affordable wind energy is increasingly available. According to a study published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, carbon dioxide emissions from energy in this country dropped by 10 percent between 2005 and 2012. In addition, China, the world’s largest producer of greenhouse gases, is actively seeking ways to reduce emissions. Proof of progress is also found in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan to cut billions of tons of pollution, a goal supported by twothirds of Americans, according to a survey

conducted by Harstad Strategic Research. Aligned with this, the government is requiring that manufacturers double automobile fuel mileage by 2025. Perhaps the best argument for hope reflects the priorities of America’s younger generations. A recent bipartisan poll of young voters conducted by Benenson Strategy Group and GS Strategy Group suggests that 80 percent of voters under the age of 35 support the president taking action to address climate change, making it an issue that both major political parties must take seriously. It’s time to realize that mankind is making decided progress, that the majority of us do care, that what local communities accomplish has a positive effect and that the global community can take the steps needed to avert catastrophic climate change. Become a part of the solution by attending one or more of the community events listed here. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)—a highly sophisticated, nonsurgical treatment for osteoarthritis and soft tissue injuries—has revolutionized the field of regenerative medicine. PRP speeds the healing of injured tissues by combining cutting-edge medical technology with the body’s innate ability to heal itself. By treating injured tissue before the damage progresses, it can greatly reduce the need for surgery. Just about a decade ago, PRP treatment was accessible only to professional athletes and celebrities who can’t afford significant downtime after an injury. Elite athletes who have used this procedure include Tiger Woods, Rafael Nadal and Kobe Bryant. Luckily, with recent developments in the technology, PRP therapy is no longer reserved for professional athletes—regular people can now be helped by this therapy, too. PRP therapy relieves pain without the risks of surgery, general anesthesia, and a hospital stay and without a prolonged recovery time. It represents a major breakthrough in the treatment of medical conditions such as musculoskeletal problems, and it is quickly becoming one of the hottest topics in regenerative medicine. How PRP heals Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentrated substance made from our own blood. It contains several different growth factors that stimulate the healing of soft tissue and joint cartilage in our bodies.

When PRP is injected into a compromised area, it triggers a slight inflammatory response, which initiates the healing cascade: improved blood flow, new cell growth and tissue regeneration. Because the blood used in the procedure is the patient’s own, there is no risk of rejection or of contracting any bloodtransmitted diseases. How PRP is made To prepare the PRP, a sample of blood is drawn from the patient’s arm. The blood is placed into a centrifuge, a special device that rapidly spins the blood. The centrifuge separates the blood into three layers: blood cells, platelets and plasma. The entire layer of platelets and part of the plasma are combined in a syringe, creating a substance with a platelets concentration above the patient’s baseline level. This new mixture is the ready-to-use PRP. A typical session A PRP treatment typically takes a couple of hours, including preparation and recovery time. To maximize the benefit of the treatment, the PRP is injected into the compromised area under ultrasound guidance, which ensures its precise delivery. Most people return to their jobs or usual activities right after the procedure. Frequency of treatments Treatments are usually four to six weeks apart, and three or more injections might be needed to begin seeing results. However, a large number of people gain

considerable to complete relief after the first or second injection. What to expect afterward PRP therapy does not itself require much of a recovery period, as drawing and administering the injections are minimally invasive and do not require anesthesia or downtime. However, some downtime and activity restrictions will likely be necessary to achieve the tissue regeneration you are attempting to attain with the help of PRP therapy. You might also experience some discomfort for a couple of days due to a mild inflammatory response triggered by PRP administration. Potential benefits of PRP Most people with musculoskeletal pain or injuries experience significant improvements in symptoms as well as a remarkable return of function. In fact, many people experience complete resolution of their pain. Successful PRP therapy may eliminate the need for long-term pain medication, prolonged courses of physical therapy or more risky treatments such as surgery. Larisa N. Minimally Invasive Ozone Extractions

There are times when a tooth is so badly decayed or damaged that it cannot be saved. That is when we look at wiggling out the tooth. With the proper use of anesthesia and using pain free injection techniques, we are able to make patients profoundly numb so that they do not have any pain. All they feel is pressure. This is not fiction, this is a fact in my office. Ok, now you are thinking that this author has gone mad, how can an extraction be minimally invasive and what does ozone have to do with it? Well if you read on, your valid queries will be answered. Traditional extractions involve using surgical instruments that haven't changed in over 200 years. Without getting graphic, this involves pushing and pulling the tooth until it is loose enough to remove. Sadly, there is usually 16

a lot of collateral trauma created on the surrounding tissue and bone. Just over 20 years ago, Dr. Richard Golden began to develop a newly designed dental instrument that provides a simple mechanical advantage by employing first-class lever mechanics. Now, a dentist trained in this technique can simply and predictably extract virtually any tooth in any condition, in a few minutes, while preserving the bone and socket. Achieving atraumatic extractions have never been easier for the patient. When you cause so much less trauma removing the tooth, there is little to no discomfort afterwards. Healing is much faster, because there is less to heal. Once the tooth is out, ozone gas is applied to the socket to kill any bacteria and start the healing process. Then we take a resorbable sponge and coat it na-newyorkcity.com

liberally in ozonated oil. This is placed in the socket and left there to help form a blood clot and induce rapid healing. It doesn't taste delicious, but extraction sites treated with the oil, heal two to three times faster than those that aren't. When it comes to replacing a missing tooth, we now have the option of placing Minimally Invasive Ozone Implants. Dr. Peter Silver

For over 18 years, Dr. Peter Silver, DDS, has been practicing MIOD in Greenwich Village, near Union Square. MIOD is the use of specialized techniques that allows your teeth and gums to be healed in the most gentle manner possible. Traditional dentistry attacks cavities by removing healthy tooth structure along with the decay. Dr. Silver uses Ozone gas to eliminate the bacteria, leaving your healthy tooth structure unharmed.

In many cases, no drilling or injections are needed, because Dr. Silver uses an air/powder spray to remove the decay that doesn’t cause any discomfort. For more extensive restorations, pain free injections are given and you are profoundly numb so that nothing will bother you. For those with any dental anxiety, we have nitrous oxide (laughing gas) which helps you relax in our extra soft chairs. We also offer Relaxation Dentistry (Sleep Dentistry) for those patients who want a completely alternative visit. After wiping out the bacteria, a remineralization solution is placed on the tooth, so it can start healing itself immediately. Then a tooth colored restoration is placed and your tooth is ready for chewing!

Use Your Own Stem Cells to treat:

Everything I Should Learn About Life I Could Learn From My Houseplants

Orthopedic ailments, Spinal cord injuries, Neurological, Cardiovascular, Autoimmune diseases, Stroke & more

By Nicole Mignone for Rewire Me Each week when I water my houseplants, I am surprised by the subtle changes that have taken place in such a short time. Most of my plants started from seeds or cuttings and continue to grow, sometimes despite their environment and caretaker. Pruning and watering are my moving meditation, and I would like to share the life lessons they have taught me. 1. Be adaptable: Many of the plants started out in another apartment with much different light and colder indoor winter temperatures. Some responded well and others dropped their leaves in protest. We, too, may move or end up outside of our comfort zone, whether by choice or involuntarily. In response, we may have to change, cut our losses, or grow where we are. 2. Pay attention to your body: A plant’s leaves reflect its health: Discoloration, spots, insects, and shape all indicate that something is missing for the proper nurturing of that plant. Likewise, the condition of our skin, hair, teeth, and eyes reveals key information about our physical health. Taking some time to assess these areas might not only change your current health, but prevent more serious illness in the future. 3. Be patient: Everything in nature has its small beginnings. Although we wouldn’t yell at a rosebud to bloom faster, we often get impatient with ourselves if we are not learning a life lesson or achieving a goal as quickly as we think we should. Nature’s wisdom in patience applies to us, too. 4. You can always start over: On a few occasions I thought some of my plants were dead, only to be surprised by their resurrection. I once planted a spider plant baby with some new dirt in a pot that had previously contained a flowering plant. A few months later, the former plant sprouted up alongside the spider plant. We can always start over, from the roots of our soul. Spring reminds us of the cycles of life and spirit. With a little awareness, patience, and faith, we can thrive in just being ourselves.

Ancient Voices Deliver Modern Warning By Klara Ibarra

If your experience is that your food comes from the grocery store and your water comes from the tap, you’ll defend to the death the system that brings those to you because your life depends on it. If, on the other hand, your food comes from a landbase and your water comes from a river, then you’ll defend to the death that landbase and that river, because your life depends on them. ~Derrick Jensen, author and environmental activist

A

large part of our mission here at Nelum Botanics is to inspire a wholesome relationship between people and Mother Earth. When we value all that earth has to offer, perhaps then we will do all it takes to protect her. What we so often forget is that earth is the origin of everything we love and depend on. The myriad steps required to process a product not only diminish the intrinsic value of that product, but also distance us from its very source. We are left not knowing whom to thank. A beautiful example of perfect interdependence between humans and earth are the Kogi, an indigenous people from Sierra Nevada, the heart of the Columbian highlands. They fled and sought refuge there during the Spanish Inquisition, building a hidden civilization on a

mountain they called “the Heart of the World.” The Kogi civilization, which still exists to this day, is based on the simple premise that earth is a living being, and we humans are her children. While “modern” humans might think of the Kogi as primitive, their spiritual relationship with earth and their advanced understanding of the earth’s systems have allowed them to thrive beautifully in abundant biodiversity for thousands of years. Sadly, it is our modern lifestyle of overuse and misuse of the earth’s resources that is threatening the Kogi, as it is threatening the natural things all around us. For this reason, the Kogi came down from the mountains for the first time several years ago to deliver a message: we need to stop robbing the earth

of its resources and learn how to live symbiotically. (The story of the Kogi and their message is the subject of a book and documentary, From the Heart of the World: The Elder Brothers’ Warning, by Alan Ereira.) The solution is not to go back, because that is not possible. Instead, we can move forward by altering our relationship with nature. We can love her by cherishing all that she provides for us. And we can protect her from the threats that would kill her, knowing that when she is weakened, we are weakened, too. Klara Ibarra is the owner and founder of Nelum Botanics. Her earth-friendly skin-care and other products are made consistent with her beliefs. Find them and more at NelumBotanics.com

EARTH IN PERIL Children Confront Climate Change by Avery Mack

T

his month, Home Box Office (HBO), in collaboration with New York City’s American Museum of Natural History, will air the new documentary, Saving My Tomorrow. Scientists representing the museum discuss how temperature change affects life on Planet Earth, but the majority of voices are those of children. Their words cry out for universal action to prevent them from inheriting what they believe is a dying planet in desperate need of healing.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA recently announced that last year was the hottest in 135 years of recordkeeping, with rising ocean temperatures driving the global heat index. Nine of the 10 hottest years have occurred since 2000. The odds of this taking place randomly are about 650 million to 1, especially without an El Nino influence, according to University of South Carolina statistician John Grego. “The globe is warmer than it has been in the last 100 years,” says climate scientist Jennifer Francis, Ph.D., of Rutgers University, in New Jersey. “Any wisps of doubt that human activities are at fault are now gone with the wind.”

In the same 100 years, sea levels have risen seven inches, mostly due to expansion as the water warms. “We have over 2 million preserved fish in our collection. We study them to see the effect of temperature change,” says Melanie Stiassny, Ph.D., curator of ichthyology at the museum. “The mummichog fish is less than an inch long. It’s a bottom feeder and that’s where pollution like mercury lies. When the water is warm, fish eat more and mercury is stored in their bodies.” The contaminants move up the food chain, bringing the effects of pollution to our dinner table. A 2006 study by Nicola Beaumont, Ph.D., with the Plymouth Marine Laboratory UK, found that 29 percent of the oceans’ edible fish and seafood species have declined by 90 percent in the past 100 years. The international team of ecologists and economists led by Boris Worm, Ph.D., of Dalhousie University, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, predict total saltwater fish extinction by 2048 due to overfishing, pollution, habitat loss and climate change. Rising ocean acidity due to absorption of increasing carbon dioxide and other emissions from burning fossil fuels impacts creatures large and small, like dissolving the shell of the tiny sea butterfly, a vital link in the ocean’s food chain. Americans currently consume 4.5 billion pounds of seafood each year.

Scientists look back to look ahead. Henry David Thoreau fell in love with the wilderness around Concord, Massachusetts, 160 years ago. From his renowned journals, scientists know when flowers like the pink lady slipper (Cypripedium acaule), bird’s-foot violets (Viola pedata) or golden ragworts (Packera aurea) used to bloom. Today, with temperatures six degrees Fahrenheit warmer than in Thoreau’s time, these species now bloom two weeks earlier. The Canada lily (Lilium canadense), plentiful before, is now rare, unable to adapt to the new reality. Paul Sweet, collections manager of the museum’s ornithology department, studies “skins” (stuffed birds). He says, “The skins show us how birds lived years ago.” In just the past 100 years, bird species that have gone extinct range from the ivory-billed woodpecker (Campephilus principalis) to the once-abundant passenger pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) and Carolina parakeet (Conuropsis carolinensis). In Colorado, 70 percent of the lodgepole pines have been lost, with pines in other states also in trouble. Pine beetles feed on the pines. Historically, winter brings death to both the beetles and weakened trees, which fall to feed a renewed forest. Due to warmer temperatures, the beetles are living longer and migrating to higher altitudes to kill more trees. Forest fires follow the dry timber line.

All Are Needed

“I don’t have time to grow up before becoming an activist.” ~Ta’Kaiya, age 12 “Get your parents involved.” ~Teakahla, age 11 Children are more informed now than ever before. Schools offer classes on ecology, the environment, global warming and climate change. Disasters are instant news, constantly streaming through digital media. Kids are aware that they need adults to work with them to keep Earth habitable. HBO will air all four parts of Saving My Tomorrow starting Apr. 22. Check local listings—and watch as a family. The Evidence for Hope By Tara Greenway

A

wonderful thing about children is their effortless ability to hope. They don’t need to learn or try to hope. They come into life trusting that they’ll be fed, held and loved. Most children hope even in the face of great hardship. That’s why we adults are sometimes jealous of children: they get to hope. And we know better ... right? Because as adults, many of us have learned, unfortunately, not to hope anymore. Good news: there is now scientific evidence in favor of hope. At least, that’s how I interpret the science of epigenetics

(which literally means “control above genetics”). We used to think that DNA was destiny. If your parents had cancer or depression, there you were—you could expect to get cancer or depression. But epigenetics has proven this idea false by showing that our cells are controlled more by their environment than by their DNA. This means that we are not dictated by our bodies or our heritage. We are the creators of our selves, our very cells. The environment of your cells is created by the nutrition you put into your body and by the emotions in which you

bathe your mind and body. You know how to change your nutrition, but how do you change your emotions? By changing your beliefs. In my ThetaHealing practice, I’ve seen hundreds of people recreate themselves by transforming the subconscious beliefs running their lives. ThetaHealing is a deep, thorough mindbody technique that changes beliefs at four levels: the core, genetic, history, and soul levels. We address the emotional and physical as one, always using what I call “the energy of all that is.” It’s amazing to watch people excavate their beliefs and heal from their emotional trauma and from physical pain or disease. So congratulations on creating your own life ... and welcome back to hope. aving a healthy home – and, as a result, a healthier body – includes establishing and maintaining earth-friendly standards in every room. Since the average adult spends one-third of each day in bed, the bedroom is the most frequently inhabited room of the house and a good place to start when it comes to creating a less toxic home environment. To create a healthy bedroom, the focus should be on removing airborne allergens like dust mites, pollen, mold, mildew, bacteria, viruses and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). These unwanted visitors disrupt sleep and can pose a range of long-term health problems from asthma to cancer. To reduce indoor air pollution, the American Lung Association and the Environmental Protection Agency recommend three strategies: control sources of pollution; ensure the home is vented adequately; and keep indoor air as clean as possible.

Step 1: Replace your existing conventional mattress because flame-retardant and stain-resistant chemicals were sprayed on it at the factory. Its foam cushioning could contain PBDEs or petrochemicals. Oil might be one of its main ingredients. Sleeping in such close contact with these off-gassing toxins can be unhealthy. Instead, choose a natural latex mattress, which is antimicrobial, antibacterial and dust mite resistant and relieves pressure points. Check that the latex is at least 97-percent natural and not a 60/40 blend of natural- and petrochemical-based materials. A natural latex mattress provides the neck, shoulders, hips and knees with pressure relief as sleep occurs in the mattress rather than on top of it. Those who are chemically sensitive – particularly to latex odors – may prefer a natural cotton mattress or organic cotton mattress. While cotton mattresses tend to be extremely firm, a wool topper can be added to soften the top and relieve pressure points. A topper will also reduce body indentations that occur over time.

na-newyorkcity.com

Step 2: If getting a new organic mattress isn’t an option, add a pure wool or natural rubber mattress topper to the existing mattress. Although the topper won’t stop the old mattress materials from off-gassing, it will put some much-needed distance between the sleeper and the toxins. In addition, encase the mattress and pillows in organic cotton barrier cloths or zippered encasings to protect the lungs from dust mite allergens and protect the skin from any eczema suffering.

flooring that is not treated with a toxic finish or recycled linoleum called Marmoleum. Include scatter rugs that can be easily washed.

Step 3: Replace conventional bedding with sheets, pillowcases, blankets and duvet covers made with all-natural or organic fibers. All fabrics, unless specified, are treated with a chemical flame retardant or stain protection. Instead, choose items made with untreated or organic cotton or wool – organic cotton now comes in many colors and patterns.

Step 10: Air out bedrooms and bedding. The Environmental Protection Agency and the National Lung Association recommend opening windows to regularly recycle the air. Those with seasonal allergies should use a window guard to stop pollen, dust and dirt particles from entering the room. And don’t be so quick to make the bed – upon rising, let bedding air out.

Step 4: Replace conventional pillows with those crafted of untreated cotton, organic cotton, buckwheat hulls, wool or natural rubber (97 percent natural latex). Avoid down pillows, which attract mites and can produce mold as they draw moisture in and don’t dry out quickly. The same holds true for down comforters; instead, select a wool comforter for lightweight warmth and superior moisture-wicking properties.

Step 11: Maintain a clean sleeping environment. According to the Mayo Clinic, bedding should be washed often in hot water at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit to kill dust mites. Cold water washing can be done with detergents specifically designed to kill dust mites.

Step 5: Replace conventional furniture with items like a headboard, side table and dresser crafted of renewable wood with a non-toxic finish. Step 6: Get an air purifier that uses filtration known as HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air). A good HEPA filter will eliminate 99.97 percent of all particles the size of three microns or larger. In choosing an air purifier, consider yearly costs for filter replacement. Some units require ongoing filter replacement and prove to be very expensive in the long run. Step 7: Remove old carpeting – a breeding ground for dust mites – and replace it with hypoallergenic cork, ceramic tile or wood

Step 8: Get rid of conventional draperies or shades. Invest in untreated wood blinds or fabric shades made with organic fibers. Step 9: Repaint with non-VOC paints or try hemp wall upholstery that can be stapled into place without using adhesives.

Step 12: Conventional pet beds are as unhealthy for pets as conventional beds are for pet owners. Choose instead those made of all-natural or organic cotton, with removable covers that can be easily laundered in hot water. Most of these steps do include a financial component, yet each one is an investment in good health – surely the most important investment that can be made.
