FDA APPROVED Non-Invasive Treatment FOR CELLULITE & UNWANTED FAT available at

Doctors at trump place

S

pring is upon us in full bloom. The days are getting hotter and some folks are already tanning in Central Park. Many patients have come to the Doctors at Trump Place Longevity Institute and Medispa with concerns regarding their recent weight gain and asking for advice on how to get rid of unwanted cellulite in time for the beach. To address these very important issues, in addition to thorough physical exams and dietary interventions, we have created a simple and comprehensive solution for cellulite and fat reduction. Our Summer Indulgence Package features our unique customized programme, which includes the revolutionary Far Infra-Red Sauna, VelaShape and Deep Tissue Massage. The fat-busting journey starts with the 30-minute treatment in Far Infra-Red Sauna, which utilizes the most beneficial wavelengths of light energy. This energy penetrates deep into the tissue and makes the water molecules in our cells resonate with the optimal frequency. This promotes a more efficient elimination of cellular toxins. The healing effects of the FIR Sauna range from improved circulation and optimized lym-

New York City Edition

phatic drainage to weight loss, boosted metabolism and heavy metal detoxification. There are very few FIR Saunas out there, which have been recognized internationally, and we are proud to employ the saunas whose manufacturers adhere to the strictest standards of safety and hygiene. After the 30-minute session in FIR Sauna, the client proceeds to a 20-minute session of VelaShape cellulite reducing treatment. This state-of-the-art FDA cleared technology safely countours, shapes and slims the body, by reducing cellulite and firming problem areas. The areas include thighs, buttocks, tummy, love handles, and arms. InfraRed light energy, Bipolar Radiofrequency, Vacuum suction and Mechanical Lymphatic Drainage are the four modalities employed in one application which lasts for 20 minutes on a given problem area. I typically recommend no more than 2 problem areas done in one day, to avoid tissue overheating. The procedure is non-invasive and has been popularized recently all over TV by Oprah, Rachel Ray, Dr.Phil, and Kim Kardashian. It is great for young and old men and women, and especially for all the mommies who have stopped breastfeeding and want to get back in shape for the summer. There are very few contraindications to either FIR Sauna or VelaShape. They include cancers, bleeding disorders, pacemaker and metallic implants. There is no downtime and the clients often pop into the office during their lunch breaks, to have a session. Once we break down the fat cells, it important to aid our body to eliminate them by directing the debris towards the lymphatic channels, which in turn, drain into the venous bloodstream, which then passes the debris to the kidneys and to the digestive system for excretion. The way to help this process along manually is a deep tissue massage. Our licensed experienced massage therapists will meet with the clients for one full hour on the designated days, to help optimize the lymphatic drainage. Most of our clients work out on the regular basis and the deep tissue massage is a great way to stretch and relax the overworked muscle groups, and to aid in the treatment of sprains, strains, and muscle cramps.

NaturalAwakeningsNYC.com

We typically recommend a series of 6 biweekly treatments of all three modalities in a package, followed by a monthly or quarterly maintenance of VelaShape. Sauna and Massage maintenance treatments are scheduled as needed, based on the client’s lifestyle and workout habits. As an additional perk, our clients have access to metabolic tests, nutritionist and acupuncturist, and many other venues, which act in synergy to promote healthy eating habits and a lifestyle leading to optimal longevity. Any successful program in weight loss and fat/cellulite reduction requires a certain level of commitment on part of the client. So, if you are determined to look great by the time this summer rolls in, check out our current promotional deal and video for our Summer Indulgence Package on NAdealsNYC.com for more information. As always, feel free to call us at 212-580-0900 for more info or to make an appointment.

Look your best now with VelaShape! As Seen On

Gentlemen: Get your abs & love handles recontoured with out any downtime, in just 4-6 weekly sessions. Ladies: Get your buttocks, thighs, abs and arms reshaped with this virtually painless procedure, with zero downtime.

Six-Day Health and Wellness Program Offered in Northern Catskills

NaturalAwakeningsNYC.com

ew York-based wellness, nutritional and fitness expert Linda R. Asta, RN, BSN, has created a medically supervised six-day program in the Northern Catskill Mountains, through Wellness Retreats NY. The program will provide participants with exercise guidelines, nutritional education and therapeutic modalities to lose weight and create healthier lifestyles in six separate editions this year from July 8 to 13, July 22 to 27, August 12 to 17, August 26 to 31, September 9 to 14 and October 7 to 12. Medical supervision and instruction will be provided by Asta, Jacqueline Mairer, M.D., Kari E. Hoyt, LMT, and other experts. The program will address specific chronic conditions and how proper diet and exercise can decrease and even eliminate symptoms of many diseases and ailments, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and certain autoimmune disorders. Participants will learn how to create a wellness program that works for them in their daily lives. This is an ultimate holistic approach, combining medical, physical and emotional issues incorporating both Eastern and Western approaches to healing. The evening sessions conducted by Asta and Mairer will focus on the benefits of a plantbased diet and its correlation to health, longevity and prevention of disease. Hoyt and other experts will lead lectures on the benefits of massage, meditation, yoga and other therapeutic modalities and how they can reduce stress and pain plus make the body more youthful and healthier. Asta supplements the program by providing ongoing support to help participants meet and maintain their goals. “If we are healthy, we will live a happier life. Learning how to nurture ourselves and restoring our hearts and souls will allow us to make a difference in the world and make this planet a better place to live,” she says. Cost for each six-day program: $1,500. Hotel accommodations must be made separately. For more information on the retreats and/or coaching, call 888-843-3334 or visit WellnessRetreatsNY.com. Wu Tao Emerges in the Metro Area

W

u Tao is coming to America for the first time ever in Brooklyn and NYC! Developed by Australian Michelle Locke in 2001, Wu Tao is a movement-based modality that blends the fluidity and play of dance with the wisdom of Chinese medicine. Wu Tao was born out of Locke’s background as a professional ballet dancer and Chinese medicine training that she had in studying to become a shiatsu practitioner. Based on the five elements of Chinese medicine, Wu Tao is a series of dances that work with specific elements and meridians within the body to balance Qi and promote a profound sense of wellness and ease. No dance training is required as the dances are both easy to learn and very gentle on the body. Registration is now open for the Wu Tao teacher training July 6-12 in downtown Brooklyn as well as a 4-week course at NY Open Center beginning July 17 (with free preview July 10.) Several classes are planned in downtown Brooklyn, NJ and PA. Private classes also available. For more information, contact Anna Brooke at thedancingway@gmail.com or visit our facebook group at www.facebook.com/ WuTaoNYC.

Juggling Bumps Up Brainpower

C

an rhythmically tossing and catching balls in the air help grow the brain? Researchers from the Universität Regensburg, in Germany, after studying two dozen people using brain scans, say yes. Half were asked to learn to juggle; the others were given no special instructions. After three months, the brains of the jugglers had grown by 3 to 4 percent in the areas that process visual and motor information; the more skilled the jugglers became, the greater the brain growth. No change occurred in the non-juggling group. The research team says the study proves that new stimuli can alter the brain’s structure, not just its function. Source: Nature.com natural awakenings

Auto Immune Toxicity Report on New Car Interiors

The consumer watchdog Ecology Center’s HealthyStuff.org, a product test results website, points out that there is more to green vehicles than fuel economy. That new-car smell can include a toxic mix of chemicals carried over from the manufacturing of seats, steering wheels, dashboards and armrests. The group’s fourth annual report on more than 200 model year 2011 and 2012 vehicles gave the Honda Civic and CR-Z and the Toyota Prius top marks for the least interior pollution, while the Kia Soul, Chrysler 200 SC and Mitsubishi Outlander ranked as the worst. The researchers tested for toxic heavy metals such as lead and mercury, and cancercausing chemicals like benzene and brominated flame retardants. “Automobiles function as chemical reactors, creating one of the most hazardous environments we spend time in,” says Jeff Gearhart, research director of the Ann Arbor, Michigan-based nonprofit. No mandatory testing or regulation of the chemicals used in vehicle manufacturing exists, so consumers face a lack of helpful information. The use of some chemicals has voluntarily declined since 2006, but many cars continue to contain chemical levels that consumer advocates consider unsafe. The biggest decrease has been in the use of plastics made with the highly toxic polyvinyl chloride (PVC), as well as bromine, chromium leather dyes and lead. View the full list of cars in the report at Tinyurl.com/carsrated.

Dads’ Roles Changing with the Times A Pew Research Center analysis of the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) confirms the continuation of a 50-year trend leading to more than one in four fathers of children 18 or younger living apart from their children; 11 percent live separately from some of their children and 16 percent from all of them. Logically, the study further shows that fathers living with their children become more intensely involved in their lives, spending more time with them and taking part in a greater variety of activities, such as sharing meals, helping with homework and playing. Black fathers (44 percent) are more than twice as likely as white fathers (21 percent) to live apart from their children, while Hispanic fathers (35 percent) are in the middle. Among fathers that never completed high school, 40 percent live apart from their children, compared with only 7 percent of fathers that graduated from college. Many absent fathers try to compensate by communicating via email, social media or phone. Almost half say they are in touch with their children several times a week, but nearly one-third communicate less than once a month. Twenty percent say they visit their children more than once a week, but 27 percent have not seen their children in the past year. Source: PewForum.org 10

A campaign by Just Label It (JustLabelIt. org), a national coalition of 500 diverse organizations dedicated to the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered (GE) or modified organism (GMO) foods, has united 1 million Americans of all political affiliations to demand that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) require the practice. “Pink slime, deadly melons, tainted turkeys and BPA in our soup have put us all on notice that what we eat and feed our families is critically important,” says Ken Cook, president of the Environmental Working Group. “Americans overwhelmingly demand safety, transparency and labeling of genetically engineered foods. It’s time for the FDA to come clean and restore public confidence in our food system.” According to a political opinion survey conducted by The Mellman Group, pollster Mark Mellman explains, “Few topics other than motherhood and apple pie can muster over 90 percent support, but labeling of GE foods is one of those few views that are held almost unanimously.” Colorado author Robyn O’Brien, founder of the AllergyKids Foundation, remarks, “Americans want more information for their families. Like allergen labeling, GE food labels would provide essential and possibly life-saving information for anyone with a food allergy.”

‘Living’ Buildings Might Inhale Urban Carbon Emissions Dr. Rachel Armstrong, a senior TED fellow and co-director of Avatar, a research group exploring advanced technologies in architecture, is promoting the development of buildings with “lungs” that could absorb carbon emissions and convert them into something useful and “skin” that could control interior temperatures without radiators or airconditioning. She projects that, “Over the next 40 years, these ‘living’ buildings, biologically programmed to extract carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, could fill our cities.” It’s an application of synthetic biology, a new science devoted to the manufacture of lifelike matter from synthesized chemicals that engineers create to behave like organic microorganisms, with the added benefit that they can be manipulated to do things nature can’t. Armstrong calls them protocells. She explains, “A protocell could be mixed with wall paint and programmed to produce limestone when exposed to carbon [emissions] on the surface of a building. Then you’ve got a paint that can actually eat carbon and change it into a shell-like substance.” As an added feature, protocells could naturally heal micro-fractures in walls, channeling through tiny breaks and helping to extend the life of the structure. Plus, says Armstrong, “The thickness of the limestone will grow over time, creating insulation and allowing the building to retain more heat or [else] sheltering it from heating up underneath the sun.”

June 12 marks 10 years of online social collaboration through the Meetup network, formed in the aftermath of the September 2001 (9/11) tragedy. Co-founder and CEO Scott Heiferman says, “I was living a couple of miles from the Twin Towers, and was the kind of person who thought local community doesn’t matter much if we’ve got the Internet and TV. The only time I thought about my neighbors was when I hoped they wouldn’t bother me.” Then, suddenly, people started helping each other and meeting up with each other and the idea for Meetup was born. Each of more than 100,000 Meetup groups starts with people simply saying hello to neighbors. Membership is 10 million and growing. To join in, visit Meetup.com.

Ancient Wisdom for the

Modern Man

By Rashmi Gulati, MD Medical Director, Patients Medical

in 3 steps

T

he study of Oriental Medicine is thousands of years old. Even with the brilliant scientific research we have access to these days, it’s amazing how the basic tenets of these ancient health paradigms still holds true in so many ways. Alaethia Doctor is a licensed acupuncturist and herbal therapist at Patients Medical. She loves working with men who have a wide array of medical conditions and diagnoses and has some excellent ideas about how to reverse symptoms of many illnesses in just three easy steps. For busy guys who don’t have time for a lot of research or explanation, Oriental Medicine can be a great choice. In fact, Alaethia says that you can treat 5 men in the time that it takes to treat one woman! While there are no “quick fixes” when it comes to your health, acupuncture and herbal remedies are the closest thing a man can get to a fast track to natural remedies for you health concerns. It’s easy, inexpensive, non-invasive and pain-free.

Here are a few ways to include Oriental Medicine in your life today. 1. Eat colorful, real food. For guys that are “on-the-go” for the majority of their day - especially bachelors – food has to be easy to grab from a deli or to get delivered. These fast foods are rarely supportive of health. Try to choose foods that are fresh and contain a wide variety of colors – green, red, yellow, purple, orange, blue – not just brown and white. The different colors of foods indicate that you’re getting a wider variety of vitamins and minerals from your foods, which is good for your body. 2. Get enough sleep. With today’s wonderful technology it seems like there are more reasons to stay up late than to 12

New York City Edition

go to bed. Sitting in front of a light source (the screen) will confuse your natural circadian rhythms and may make it difficult to get to sleep or to stay asleep. You probably already know that lack of sleep makes it difficult to focus the next day at work, but it may also make you less likely to get out and exercise, reduce your motor skills, kill your libido and muddle your ability to communicate. 3. Don’t procrastinate. Consult your practitioner right away when you notice symptoms – it will be easier to treat than if you wait for weeks or even months. In Chinese medicine, they say you can expect to be treated for a month for each year that you symptom has been presenting. That means that if you wait for several years before consulting your practitioner, you can expect for it to take several months of treatment until you are feeling free of the symptom again. This all begins with developing a relationship with a good practitioner who you trust – and who you know “gets” your health goals. It may take a few tries to find a practitioner that you feel comfortable with, but ask your friends for recommendations to get you pointed in the right direction. Try to incorporate at least one of these steps in your life every day and you’ll notice a difference in your health immediately. For a personalized consultation and recommendations tailored to your health concerns, see Alaethia or one of Patients Medical’s other expert acupuncturists. Get $20 off your initial consultation fee when you come in for your first acupuncture visit with one of our practitioners before June 30th, 2012. Is Salt a Killer?

by Michael E. Doyle

F

or thousands of years, people across the globe have been enjoying salt and salty foods. Salt was so important that it was even used as money. But over the past few decades doctors and health experts have been saying that salt is dangerous and that we should all cut back on it. So, who is right? So far, it looks like the “health experts” are wrong. Although studies have shown that severely cutting back on salt can lower blood pressure by a few points, there is no proof that salt restriction improves overall health. In fact, many studies show exactly the opposite. Not long ago, a large study from Albert Einstein medical school concluded that people with the lowest

sodium intake had the highest rate of heart-related death (Am J Med. 2006). Several years earlier, researchers found the same thing, pointing out that that “sodium intake was inversely associated with… mortality». Translation: people with the lowest salt intake were most likely to die. Likewise, a review of the effects of dietary salt concluded that salt restriction “was not scientifically justified”. While cutting back on salt (and sodium) often reduces blood pressure slightly, it may have other effects, too. Several studies have shown that potentially harmful effects may result from reducing salt. These findings include elevations in blood sugar, cholesterol and insulin levels in people on low salt diets. So it is possible that too little salt could actually be harmful for many people. While these studies do not prove that everyone should eat lots of salt, they do strongly suggest that most of us don›t need to worry about moderate salt intake. In fact, salt may be good for many of us. Obviously, everybody is different and some people can certainly be harmed by excess salt. So, be sure to talk to your doctor before making major dietary changes. The moral of the story is simple: Expert or otherwise, when someone tells you to do the opposite of what people have always done, take pause. Make sure that they have proof that they are right. They often don’t. Michael E. Doyle, MD is a board-certified Family Physician whose practice combines Conventional and Alternative medicine and includes nutritional and bio-identical hormone therapies. Dr. Doyle practices in Stamford. He can be reached at 203-324-4747. GoToDrDoyle.com. See ad pg 22.

Once she attended the women’s retreat she was researching, she was hooked. “Every year since, I find myself being drawn to Omega for its promotion of meditation and overall encouragement of ‘staying in the present,’” she says. “All the programs stem from one mission: to keep us on the right path.” Talks by internationally known speakers such as Joan Borysenko, Eckhart Tolle, Harville Hendrix and Daniel Amen are complemented by sessions in nurturing creativity, holistic health, and yoga practice. “People smile, but also keep to themselves,” explains Goff. “It’s a place for quieting your mind.” For shorter getaways, Hay House, headquartered in Carlsbad, California, sponsors weekend I Can Do It! seminars in various cities (HayHouse.com). Speakers such as Louise Hay, Gregg Braden, Wayne Dyer and Caroline Myss help attendees nudge closer to making milestone transformations, consciousness shifts and progress on their healing journeys. Sometimes, personal growth simply involves sufficient quiet time to walk, contemplate and reconnect with our muse. “The real meaning of the word ‘retreat’ in the spiritual sense,” says Brother David Steindl-Rast, a Benedictine monk, “is stepping back. When one steps back, one gets a better view of the world, others and our deepest self.” Iyer finds solace at New Camaldoli Heritage, a Benedictine commu-

nity amidst the rugged terrain of Big Sur, California (Contemplation.com). More than 2,000 monasteries and other spiritual communities throughout North America offer off-the-beaten-path retreats at reasonable prices and generally welcome guests of all religions and spiritual practices. The one requirement is that guests not disturb others. At Ghost Ranch, in the high desert of Abiquiu, New Mexico, “The scenery alone is spiritual and healing,” relates Nancy Early, a New York film producer. Under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church, activities encourage individual and social transformation (NewMexicoGhostRanch.org). Early says the best part is, “There’s one pay phone, and cell phones don’t work here; no TV or radio. You walk away from everything that controls your life.”

by attending a breathing and meditation class at the Lake Austin Spa, in Texas. “Now I start each day with long, deep breaths before I even get out of bed,” she says. “It is so simple, so calming and establishes my day with peace.” Virginia Nelson, a San Diego, California, attorney, likewise revels in her twice-yearly visits to Canyon Ranch, in Tucson, Arizona. “The pace in southern California is like running a marathon every day. My visits serve as respites that

have allowed me to keep up with it this long. “I first went in 1991 and saw a place to go and cocoon,” recounts Nelson, “but I also discovered incredible fitness and education classes.” The spa is essentially a reset button for her. “It’s rest, rejuvenation and reinvention.” Canyon Ranch has several U.S. locations (CanyonRanch.com). Some facilities feature niche mind/ body experiences, such as the psychic massage or chakra balancing at Mii Amo

Sometimes the healthy escape we seek can be found at a destination spa, which combines enough structure to slowly wean us from daily busyness with sufficient soothing, quiet spaces and physical nurturing. For Debbie Phillips—who spends part of the year in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, and the other part in Naples, Florida—one visit to a spa was all it took. As an executive and life coach, Phillips founded Women on Fire in 2003 to connect her “on fire” clients with each other via regional meetings and a free online newsletter, and discovered that the condition sometimes crosses the line into overwork. “My first visit to a spa more than 20 years ago was when I first learned about the life-changing benefits of taking better care of myself. In addition to the soothing amenities, the peace, calm and quiet usually found at a spa—space to think, nap, read a book or gaze into the sky—often results in ‘less’ becoming ‘more’ in your life,” Phillips says. “I have returned home feeling lighter and brighter and even more excited for what is next. The experience gave me just the boost I needed to keep going.” Recently, Phillips discovered simple techniques to nurture herself all year long natural awakenings

Active Adventure: The Body

Finding a clear stillpoint of one’s soul can also occur while moving and challenging our bodies. Exercise helps us break through not only physical boundaries, but emotional and spiritual barriers, as well. Barbara Bartocci, a long-distance cycler and author of Meditation in Motion, maintains that moving keeps both our brains and bodies healthier. “Research at The University of Arizona found that regular exercise appears to preserve key parts of the brain involved in attention and memory,” she notes. “It is well known that exercise helps to reduce anxiety, allay depression and generally improve mood, by prompting our bodies to release more endorphins.” Bartocci has experienced the power of these connections firsthand. “Active vacations are truly transformative,” she says emphatically. “When I bicycled across Iowa on RAGBRAI [The Des

Moines Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa], we cycled 76 miles one day on hills with a constant 20-mile-per-hour headwind. It was a tough day, but I made it! My divorce was becoming final that summer, and completing that day gave me the encouraging inner message: ‘If I can cycle Iowa on the toughest day, I can re-cycle my life after divorce.’” She’s still moving along. Recently, she joined 500 other cyclists doing 60 miles a day for a week in Wisconsin. Bill Murphy, of Annapolis, Maryland, made his breakthrough at the Boulder Outdoor Survival School (boss-inc.com). “While I wanted an adventure and to put myself out there, I also wanted to know that I was in good hands,” he says about why he chose a guided trip. Murphy was already in good shape, having competed in a local Ironman event. Following an initial fitness assessment that involved testing his heart rate after running at high altitude, he was deemed fit to take part in an outdoor survival experience in Utah’s desert country. With a knife, wool jacket, cap, gloves, long underwear and suitable shoes—but no tent, sleeping bag or food—his group learned to live off the land with the assistance of three instructors in an initial phase of the program. “After two days we were given our backpack with the critical blanket, poncho and food rations. I have never been so happy to hear the words ‘1,500 calories’ in my life, and though I have NaturalAwakeningsNYC.com

eaten at some wonderful restaurants, the soups we made with those rations tasted better than anything I have eaten in my life,” he says. Murphy learned how to purify water, make a tent from his poncho, start a fire with minimal tools and bed down in the cold without a sleeping bag or blanket. A crucial part of the survival training was the need to go even further when the group thought their adventure had ended. “We didn’t know whether that would be in 10 miles or 30,” he recalls. His ability to physically push past the mentally established timeframe led Murphy to see that he could also move beyond his either/or boundaries: either family or business; either business or adventure. “I realized that I don’t have to choose one over the other. I feel a better sense of balance now.” In other parts of the country, Outward Bound Adult Renewal also offers new experiences that test physical limits and present breakthrough opportunities (OutwardBound.org). It’s also known for programs that help teens get a better handle on life. Participants often rock climb the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia or sea kayak along the Pacific Northwest or North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Options for growth and renewal appear endless. Nearby or far away, for a few days or longer, a healthy escape can be truly restorative. Judith Fertig regularly contributes to Natural Awakenings.

WHAT WORKS: Dr. Oz’ 25 Greatest Men’s Health Tips

by Dr. Mehmet Oz

P

atients are among my best teachers. They’ve taught me how to communicate clearly— and how to live a better life. On The Dr. Oz Show, I’ve learned that once people are emotionally involved, change happens quickly, especially if they feel that their behavior is letting loved ones down. Large-scale change seems daunting. We want simple routines that we can automatically follow. Adopt some of the steps described here, which work for me and that anyone can do, and you will like your life more in just a couple of weeks. Plus, you’ll live longer.

Eating fiber in the morning means less hunger late in the afternoon, when you’re most likely to feel tired and gorge yourself on sugar. My morning dose comes from steel-cut oatmeal, usually mixed with raisins, walnuts and flaxseed oil. An early start on eating also keeps your metabolism more active throughout the day; breakfast eaters are thinner than people who just rush out the door.

3: Hit the Sack Jay and Dave are funny, but they’re not worth the strain on your system. Seven hours of sleep a night not only helps you live longer, it also lowers your stress, sharpens your memory and reduces cravings for pants-splitting foods. Set a bedtime and stick to it. My target is 10:30 p.m. I record the late shows and then watch them the next day as I pedal a stationary bike.

1: Roll on the Floor Laughing Laughing not only eases stress, promotes social bonding and lowers blood pressure; it may also boost your immune system. So bring some humor into your life, whether it’s through friends, a television show or something else that tickles your funny bone.

4: Admire Your Work

2: Don’t Skip Breakfast 18

the flusher. Turn around and take a look at your poop, which speaks volumes about your gut and overall health. Poop should be smooth and S-shaped, like your colon. If it comes out too lumpy, or drops into the bowl like marbles, you’re constipated; increase your fiber and water intake.

5: Don’t Pamper Your Bad Back

Even if you’re hunched over in agony, spending more time in bed will only make a bad back worse. The latest research shows that bed rest weakens back muscles and prolongs the suffering. Married men with this problem may suffer more than single men because they’re tempted to lie back and enjoy all the pampering they receive. The best solution is to get up, take a pain reliever and be a soldier.

6: Taste the Colors

Foods with bright, rich colors are packed with flavonoids and carotenoids, powerful compounds that bind with the damaging free radicals in your body, lowering inflammation. Eat nine fistfuls of colorful fruits and vegetables each day and you’ll reap the benefits without having to give up other foods. Whenever I shop the produce aisle, I’m reminded that these foods are often more powerful than the drugs sold in pharmacies. My favorites are arugula and blueberries.

7: Brushing is Not Enough If you plan to spend your later years eating more than yogurt and apple sauce, invest in some floss. No matter how thoroughly or long you brush your teeth, you’re missing a good portion of their total surface. That’s like washing one armpit after a workout. But the dangers of skipping floss go beyond hygiene: The bacteria that linger can increase your risk of heart disease.

8: Take a Deep Belly Breath

Do this anywhere, anytime. Push out your bellows and suck air through your nose until your lungs are full. They’ll fill with nitric oxide, a chemical found in the back of your nose that opens up blood vessels. The dose of oxygen will make you feel happier and more alert. This is my secret technique for calming down in the face of challenges.

9: Join a Yoga Class

Yoga is the most important exercise of my daily routine. Being surrounded by beautiful women in spandex should be reason enough to join a class, but if you need more motivation, consider this: Yoga eases stress, lowers blood pressure, slows heart rate and increases flexibility. There’s nothing mystical about it. Loosening your muscles will make them more adaptable, so you may be less likely to injure yourself playing sports. Sure, some of the poses may look ridiculous, but that’s for a reason. Yoga can reach and work muscles that are ignored during routine sports and daily life. My favorite maneuver is the sun salutation.

10: Don’t Be an Island

Ever wonder why women live longer than men? One major reason is that they form tight networks and actually talk about their problems. If you face life’s stresses alone, you will make yourself older. With another person’s love and support, the inner aging associated with stress can be reduced.

11: Avoid Fad Diets

The secret to weight loss is not to avoid carbs, fats, yellow foods, solid foods or foods that start with the letter G. The real trick is to lower your daily intake by about 100 calories. You’ll hardly notice, but it’ll add up to a loss of about 10 pounds in a year. Calorie restriction has been shown to lengthen life (in rats and monkeys). I cut back once a year to reset my appetite and taste buds. Healthy foods taste great afterwards.

12: Be a Smart Patient

Professionals can help keep you in good health, but the responsibility ultimately falls on you. Seek a second opinion before undergoing any medical procedure, because 30 percent of the time, that opinion will change the diagnosis or plan. Keep a written medical history and educate yourself about any family problems. You might even consider signing onto Microsoft HealthVault or Google Health, so your files would be accessible in case you find yourself in trouble away from home. natural awakenings

13: Lose the Beer Belly

Most men fasten their belts below their waists. It’s just another way of avoiding the truth about their gut. Grab a tape measure and put it around your body at the level of your belly button. That number should be less than half your height. For my six-foot, one-inch frame, for example, I need to keep my waist under 36.5 inches. If avoiding heart attacks and diabetes isn’t enough motivation to eliminate that gut, consider this: For every point your body mass index is over 25, your testosterone drops 3 percent, which isn’t very manly.

14: Go Green

I drink green tea three times a day. It’s packed with heart-boosting and cancer-stopping polyphenols that black tea doesn’t offer. These beneficial chemicals are lost when it’s fermented. Green tea also delivers a boost of alertness, but from a smaller dose of caffeine than black tea. Green tea can even fight dandruff, although only if you pour the cooled tea directly onto your scalp.

15: Sweat Until You’re Wet

If you can work up a sweat for just one hour a week, you’ll enjoy a range of benefits, including a reduced risk of heart attack, better mood and lower blood pressure. I like interval training on the elliptical, with 15 pull-ups and 15 dips after every 10 minutes. Your muscles will become more efficient, so you’ll have more stamina for more enjoyable activities that also work up a sweat.

17: Have as Much Sex as Possible

If a 50-something man could have sex 700 times a year, the exercise and stress reduction would make him look and feel years younger. I wouldn’t recommend quitting your day job in order to hit that number—but what’s the harm in trying? The next time your loved one says she has a headache, tell her she’s literally killing you. It works for me.

18: Know Your Numbers, then Aim Lower

Take the part of your brain dedicated to your local steak house’s phone number and reassign it to your heart’s vital signs. These include blood pressure (which ideally should be below 115 over 75), LDL cholesterol (under 100), resting heart rate (under 70), and fasting blood sugar (under 100). If your numbers aren’t ideal, change your diet until they improve.

19: Add Some Weights

Just 30 minutes twice a week spent lifting weights can build significant muscle mass. What’s more, working all that muscle burns tons of calories, making it a great way to lose your gut, too. Don’t have weights? Try lifting yourself: Pull-ups are the most valuable muscle-building exercises I do. Trainer Bob Greene pointed out to me that pull-ups work the back, pecs, arms and belly all at once. Because you’re lifting yourself, you’ll think twice before eating that doughnut, because you’ll just have to lift it later. A simple setup in a door frame is convenient and inexpensive.

16: Save Some Money

Most people rank personal finance as their number one stressor, usually because they feel powerless about it. Stress not only shortens lives, it also drives people to habits like smoking, drinking or binge eating. Keep some money in a special bank account, safe from your lust for a new television, and you’ll establish an emotional comfort zone with major health benefits.

20: Grab Your Nuts

Nuts are among the best sources of healthful fats and protein around. I keep a bag of walnuts in my fridge and use their massive dose of omega-3 fatty acids to boost my brainpower while I see patients. Half of a handful eaten about 30 minutes before a meal will temper your appetite and help you avoid the drive-thru.

21: No, Seriously, Grab Your Nuts

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men ages 15 to 35, but it’s usually curable if caught early enough. I strongly urge you to grab your testicles and check them for bumps at least once a month. Each testicle should feel smooth and slightly soft, and one should hang slightly lower than the other, like two avocados (which, in Aztec, actually means “testicles”) growing on a tree.

22: Hit the Dance Floor

Crosswords and card games aren’t the only way to keep a brain razor sharp. It turns out that any kind of dancing with complex moves is stimulating enough to give neurons a workout. Even the simplest moves provide some physical exercise. So don’t be such a wallflower on your next night out. As a bonus, dancing may help you with tip number 17.

23: Do Your Penis a Favor

Step on a treadmill. Men who exercise enough to burn 200 calories a day significantly lower their chances of impotence. That’s because impotence often has the same cause as heart attacks: blocked arteries. Your penis is like a dipstick for your arteries, so check it. If you’re interested in keeping it up later in life, lace up the sneakers now.

24: Learn to Cook

Do you think you know how much butter goes into preparing those mashed potatoes at a restaurant? You’re probably off by half. If you can cook, you not only save money, but also gain control over what goes into your meals. Plus, for most women, a man who knows how to cook is as sexy as one who stars in movies. I have trouble boiling water. Thankfully, I’m already married.

WHAT DOESN’T WORK According to information found in the Congressional Record (S.J. Res. 179), many men are reluctant to visit their health center or physician for regular screening examinations for reasons ranging from fear to lack of information or cost. Dr. Harvey Simon, author of The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men’s Health, says that 30 percent of American men don’t have a regular doctor and that many of those men fall into two mentalities: n The John Wayne mentality: The macho idea holds that men have to be strong and just grit their teeth and not think about their vulnerabilities, but go straight ahead. n Ostrich mentality: Afraid to face up to their vulnerabilities, these men feel that by putting their head in the sand, maybe the problem(s) will all just go away. Dr. Simon suggests that such attitudes, combined with other risky or foolish behavior, could be responsible for the shorter life expectancy of men compared to women.

25: Some Pills Should Be Popped

The indoor life gives modern man protection from the elements. Unfortunately, roughly half of us are deficient in vitamin D, for which the sun is a major source. This crucial vitamin may aid in fighting cancer, diabetes and heart disease. I take a 1,000 IU supplement each morning.

DAD’S GOLDEN STORY HOUR

Kids Listen with their Entire Being by Clint Kelly

“S

oon, the brave little tailor and the beautiful Princess Minnie were happily married. And to think it all began with seven dead flies.” So ends The Brave Little Tailor, starring Mickey Mouse. Whenever I concluded reading with those words and attempted to close the well-worn book, I was inevitably hit with a chorus of, “Aw, Dad,” as they yearned for more. Why had my offspring narrowed the book selections to so few predict-

22

able favorites? Although the kids loved it, the constant repetition got to me. I rather empathized with the darker side of the original Brothers Grimm version of the tale. It’s not that I was opposed to pulling story duty. Children take comfort in the familiarity and lasting values of classic storylines. But at reading time, temptation whispered, “What they want is your time. It doesn’t matter what you read; just read…”

NaturalAwakeningsNYC.com

A brief motor racing vignette in Road & Track, perhaps, or the latest major league baseball trade analyses from Sports Illustrated? My mind would wander. They’d scold me. “Dad! You just said the little tailor caught seven flies in a row. It’s, ‘Seven flies at one blow,’ Dad.” Busted. Sadly, it wasn’t long before I was caught yet again. “Dad! It was Chicken Little who thought the sky was falling and The Little Red Hen who worked to bake the bread her lazy friends wouldn’t lift a finger to make. You always get them mixed up.” Verbal slips aside, the kids crowded closer. They jockeyed for position against my chest, listening to the whoosh of my heart, the cadence of the words and the conviction of my voice reverberating into their inner ears, down along their spinal columns and deep into their souls. Still, given the choice between Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle or the daily stock quotations, I’m afraid that Wall Street often muscled the good woman aside. My wife urged me to persist. “The children have me all day. If only for a half-hour every night, you’ve got a solid grip on the children. Don’t let them slip away.” Okay, I thought. Just as Mrs. PiggleWiggle had her magical cures for neverwant-to-go-to-bedders, surely I could find a cure for my reading ennui. In fact, taking a page from the Little Tailor’s playbook, I found seven. First, I sometimes invited a “guest”

reader. A Grover hand puppet and a gravelly voice kept me alert, delighted the kids and gave those stories a fresh new lease. The second remedy was to turn off the TV, ignore the phone and read by a lone lamplight that ringed me and my audience in a cozy glow. Third, for variety, we’d sometimes read in a “secret” place. Goldilocks acquires a new dimension when read under the kitchen table. My fourth remedy was to introduce dinner readings. “For the first course,” I’d say, “a heaping helping of Hansel and Gretel.” Tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches lend themselves nicely to this departure from standard fare. Fifth, I’d occasionally take a break by playing a talking book episode. It made old standbys like Tom Sawyer fresh again. As a sixth solution, when I assigned the kids parts in a story the plot took on a dimension that would often make us giggle. Even very young childre that haven’t learned to read are able to memorize well-loved passages and recite lines verbatim. The seventh remedy was to spin original tales. When I was a boy, my mother created an entire forest world populated by clever animals: Fox, the sly one; Owl, the fusty Winston Churchill; and Beetle Boy, the action hero. I took what she began and created Further Adventures from the Deep, Dark Wood. While I didn’t feel every inch the polished spinner of tales early on, neither did I abdicate the richly fulfilling role of chief reader for our little tribe. The more interest I showed their beloved classics, the closer they snuggled. Remedies in hand, my attitude improved. I relaxed and became less attached to my “other” reading material. At story time, I soaked up the hugs, the laughter and the love. Truth be told, I came to like having the most luxurious—and requested—lap around. Who Am I, Really?

A Holistic Approach to Self-Discovery by Michael Mongno Ph.D

“Who am I” is probably the biggest question anyone could ever ask, an existential query so profound that it’s hard to know just where to start.

W

e could begin with our country of origin, then our city, and our family and its generational roots. That would say something about the reality that shaped our perceptions of life, our language with which we express ourselves and our cultural mores. And although we may take this for granted, it has certainly influenced us to a large extent. But what we’re really asking is “Who am I as a person with an independent will and some kind of unique destiny?” or “Who am I deep inside as a person living this life, my life, and is the life I’m creating one that I want and am happy with?” The reason this question is really so profound is because it speaks to a desire to truly know oneself, our authentic self or true nature. Answering this becomes something more than just “I’m a person who […fill in

24

New York City Edition

the blanks…].” It speaks to a desire to fully know the depth of who we are as an integrated being: body, mind, and spirit. Answering this can be the journey of a lifetime, a wonderful journey of coming in touch with our uniqueness from the inside out. I grew up wondering this early in life, in my teens, and indeed it has become a lifetime process that’s not over yet. I started with first wondering about happiness, where it can be found and if it can be maintained. This led me to embark on a spiritual path which in part was seeking for a way to fit in or feel comfortable (due to the lack of my own socialization skills) in a world that was rapidly changing. After years of doing the classic spiritual by-pass I realized that I needed to face who I was as an emotional being. The problem was, like many men, I was so out of touch with my feelings that I really didn’t know where to start. It was quite daunting and I still remember sitting with my first therapist as she encouraged me to sit and try to tune in to whatever emotions I was having and where they might be in my body. This was hard, since I really didn’t even know what they were much less where they might be located. But nonetheless this felt important so I NaturalAwakeningsNYC.com

persevered and ended up being able to extrapolate from the four basic emotions (mad, sad, glad, and afraid) whatever I was feeling in the moment. Of course it was only many years later that I learned why they were so important: emotions are the gateway to our needs (i.e. in order to know what you really need you must know how you really feel) and emotions are the all important connective avenue with another, which is empathy, and can only be experienced if you can feel someone’s experience. This path differed in many ways from the path of enlightenment that I’d been on for years. I had to learn to work with my thoughts and feelings and also to try to live in my body, with all the stuff that goes on there -- very challenging indeed. It was almost enough to send me scurrying back to my meditation cushion for another week long silent retreat at the nearest Ashram. Emotions differ quite a bit from cognition; they are quite a bit messier, last a lot longer and are never as black and white. Also they seem to arise at the drop of a hat, as if from nowhere. This is where the use of the mind is helpful in analyzing their source and what got triggered to cause such a reaction. Most all of the dramas

in relationships get triggered by some historical memory in the body (a container for all emotional experience) or some replication of family trauma that feels so real that we feel we must either run, fight, or shut down to protect ourselves. Understanding our mind has become a province of the therapeutic realm for a hundred years and the analysis thereof has helped to make great strides in the understanding of the self. Over the past fifty years new, experiential modalities (Gestalt, Bio-Energetics, and Reichian therapies) have opened us up to realizing that the self we’ve been discovering is more that just thought patterns from historical imprinting but a body that has also been historically imbedded with emotional memory. This memory can be triggered in life situations often to deleterious effects but can also be therapeutically released and then healed in an emotionally corrective experience. Here both the body and the mind benefits and there is more freed up energy to be used by both. Then we are free to come back to the spirit, actually where it/we all began. Knowing that we are spiritual beings having a human experience can be helpful in accepting or making sense of the slings and arrows of the world and all the suffering we see and have to endure. Having a spiritual practice, belonging to a religious community, or spending time in prayer and meditation can free our minds and expand our awareness of self so that we can perceive reality differently. Texts such as A Course in Miracles or books like The Power of Now teach us how to move out of the small egoic sense we have of ourselves to the realization that we’re part of something much larger than we can even imagine, a supreme intelligence that is implicitly and unconditionally loving. The great religious texts also offer guidance in how to live a balanced life based on faith, trust and a caring for our fellow man. We are thus more than just our histories, our thoughts and feelings, our bodies and our spirituality. In attempting to answer the profundity of

the question of our essential identity we must explore the depth of everything that forms the integrated whole of who we really are. This search for the discovery of our authentic self or true nature can be wonderfully rewarding as well as profoundly exasperating depending on where we’re at in our journey. But this is where our awareness of our different parts and the internal resources they each provide can help us stay centered and balanced and aligned with the highest and great-

est that we as humans have to offer. Michael Mongno MFT, Ph.D, LP is a licensed psychoanalyst, relationship counselor and holistic practitioner in Manhattan.
