Planet Conscious Travel

Who doesn’t love a good getaway? This month’s focus is on eco-tourism, and for good reason: saving our environment is a real concern. Sustainability isn’t just about recycling; it goes far beyond that, and you can help when you travel for that much-needed vacation.

In our house, getting away together and recharging is something we all look forward to, and for Michael and me, it allows us to slow down and catch up with the boys in an unhurried atmosphere. We don’t put forth any grand plans; we take each day as it comes and do what we feel like doing. Sometimes, that’s nothing but sitting on a beach and swimming in the ocean. Dialing down from the frenetic pace of our regularly scheduled lives makes taking that trip good for the mind, body and soul.

After reading our “Sustainable Travel” article, I can check the following boxes:

Dine at locally owned eateries. This helps support those who live there year-round. There’s nothing better than enjoying food supplied by local farmers.

Bring eco-friendly sunscreen. On our last island trip, we read that using eco-friendly sunscreen would protect sea life and coral reefs. There's no better reason to uplevel our sunscreen than that!

Pack a cloth tote for daily excursions. We do this on every trip we take and reuse it at the beach to carry our towels and essentials.

Additionally, getting to know the locals and being genuinely interested in who they are and what they love most about their home helps direct us to sites and attractions that can help them continue their sustainability mission. Tourism is vital for many countries, and finding a way to support the local economy is a step in the right direction.

Knowing that we are helping the environment as we enjoy the natural beauty of our destination not only makes me feel good but also shows our respect for the land of others. This world belongs to all of us, so collectively, we can protect, preserve and save our planet for future generations.

Happy Travels!

The Genius of Empathy by Dr. Judith Orloff

According to New York Times bestselling author and psychiatrist Judith Orloff, M.D., empathy is a superpower that can transform your life, your relationships, and the world. In her new book The Genius of Empathy: Practical Skills to Heal Your Sensitive Self, Your Relationships and the World (with foreword by The Dalai Lama), Dr. Orloff shows readers how to ignite and embody the emotional intelligence of empathy as a daily healing practice.

The Genius of Empathy demonstrates ways to tap into the gift of one’s sensitivities without being drained. Readers will learn how to soothe their nervous system and stop absorbing other people’s emotions. It’s a practical, action-driven guide for highly sensitive people and for those who want to develop empathy as a healing skill.

The book is divided into three sections. It begins with the magic of empathy to find greater self-love and healing—including from trauma. Subsequent chapters teach readers how to apply empathy to their relationships, communities and the world. Exploring each chapter’s practices, readers will learn the art of empathic listening, how to stop overthinking, and the importance of setting healthy boundaries and showing loving detachment to prevent overwhelm and compassion fatigue.

Throughout the book Orloff uses insights from neuroscience, psychology and energy medicine to teach readers how to use and amplify their empathy without feeling overwhelmed. The book also offers tips on how to prevent empathy burnout, techniques to enhance self-empathy and healthy giving, how to use empathic communication and leadership skills at work and home, how to show empathy for others—even when you’re not in agreement, and how to protect oneself from those with “empathy-deficient disorder” such as narcissists, sociopaths and bullies.

Each chapter has compelling anecdotes on how Orloff’s patients enhanced their lives with this book’s techniques. “Cultivating empathy is a kind of peaceful warrior training,” says Orloff. “You will learn to be both strong and loving, neither a pushover nor rigid. Wherever you are in your life, this book can meet you there and lift you higher.”

Judith Orloff, M.D., is a New York Times bestselling author with the NEW book The Genius of Empathy. She has also written The Empath’s Survival Guide and Thriving as an Empath, which offers daily self-care tools for sensitive people. Dr. Orloff integrates the pearls of conventional medicine with cutting edge knowledge of intuition, empathy, energy medicine and spirituality. She will host a global online webinar about empathic healing techniques based on The Genius of Empathy on April 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. PDT. Chronic Epstein Barr Virus

The past few years have shown a huge increase in the number of people dealing with chronic Epstein Barr Virus (EBV). While there are many causes for this surge in cases, the top two reasons include increased stress and reactivation due to another virus, such as COVID-19.

EBV causes many issues. It is the same virus that causes mono (mononucleosis), often caught when we are in our teens or early twenties. Just like chicken pox, EBV stays in the body, dormant, forever. And just like chicken pox, it re-emerges at different points in our life, often due to increased stress or being reactivated by another infection. So as chicken pox returns as shingles, mono comes back as chronic EBV. Shingles can last a long time. Without proper treatment it can hang around for months or even years. In my opinion, EBV is even more chronic. Some of my patients have had it for more than a decade. Many people are unaware that they have it or have had it. There are simple blood tests to detect the antibodies for this virus and, based on how high those antibodies are, the results can determine if the virus is reactivated in its chronic state.

Most people with EBV experience three classic symptoms. The first is fatigue which can range from mild to profound and be constant or intermittent. The second symptom is a sense of “brain fog” where thinking and perception aren’t clear. This can also range from mild to profound. Some people have a fuzzy or fullness sensation in their head or even just their eyes. It is often described as though one’s head is filled with cotton or fiberglass. The third most common symptom is mild to moderate body aches. The fuzzy sensation I described earlier can also be felt in the limbs. Of course, everyone is different, and our sensations can be described in many ways. However, approximately 80 percent of those suffering with chronic EBV experience these classic symptoms.

Then there are the not-so-classic symptoms. Some people liken EBV to Lyme disease. Lyme, as discussed in previous articles, is known as the “Great Mimicker.” It can look like many different diseases. Why does this happen? Unlike most viral infections—which generally infect specific tissues—Lyme and EBV can infect most tissues of the body. Most commonly the nerves and liver are affected, which then creates the symptoms described above. However, if the virus lives in the digestive tract, more digestive symptoms will occur. If it’s nestled in the reproductive system, a patient might present with low hormones or infertility, and so on.

A few years ago, a woman came to see me for various health issues. While she was my patient, she mentioned that she and her second husband were trying to get pregnant for 12 years. Both had children from their first marriages, so they were unclear as to why it was such a challenge to conceive. After determining that she was in great health, we decided to see if there was something going on with her husband’s health. When he became my patient, he shared that he had minor health complaints besides fatigue from owning multiple businesses and burning the candle at both ends. When reviewing the results from his blood tests, I noticed his EBV titers were “off-the-charts.” After deploying an antiviral EBV protocol, less

than two months later his wife was pregnant. Not only that, his energy and focus improved dramatically.

For simple cases like his we are often able to jump right into some anti-viral herbal therapy and often notice a dramatic improvement in about four weeks. However, everyone’s treatment plan is different. For those with multiple issues, we must repair some of the ongoing issues in the body so the treatment plan may stretch out for several months. This sets the stage for empowering the immune system to be able to fight and suppress the EBV virus.

So many people are suffering from the effects of chronic EBV and do not even realize it. Life can be so much better, happier and clearer. We just need to take the first step to owning our health.

Treating Anxiety With Mindfulness

According to a randomized clinical trial published in JAMA Psychiatry, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) has been found to be a well-tolerated treatment option that can be as effective as commonly prescribed anxiety medications. The study involved 276 adults with diagnosed anxiety disorders that were randomly assigned to either an eightweek MBSR course or treatment with escitalopram, a first-line anxiety medication. Anxiety levels were assessed using the Clinical Global Impression of Severity scale (CGI-S).

At the end of the study, both the MBSR and escitalopram groups experienced a reduction in their mean CGI-S score, with no significant difference between the two groups. MBSR was well-tolerated, with no dropouts due to adverse events, whereas a higher percentage of participants in the escitalopram group reported adverse events. The results demonstrated that MBSR was not inferior to escitalopram in reducing anxiety symptoms.

An estimated 301 million people worldwide are affected by anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic and agoraphobia, causing significant distress, impaired functioning and elevated risk of suicide.

County Declares Loneliness a Public Health Crisis

San Mateo County near San Francisco is the first county in the U.S. to declare loneliness a public health crisis. The resolution, which commits the county to address the issue but does not set aside funds to reduce loneliness, was inspired by the United Kingdom and Japan, which appointed ministers to tackle the problem. Future efforts by San Mateo County may include investments in infrastructure to make neighborhoods more accessible, social media posts that encourage social interaction, and the earmarking of community mental health dollars for organizations that develop or offer solutions.

Loneliness has been associated with increased risk of dementia, depression, anxiety, heart disease and stroke. A British study found that those that lived alone and had no visitors had a 39 percent increased risk of premature death compared to those visited by loved ones daily.

Achieve Optimal Health with Colon Cleansing

When conventional methods failed to help her with digestive issues and a misdiagnosed ruptured appendix, Vanessa Drew, founder of Cleansing Concepts, turned to holistic natural medicine. “After exploring many different options, I discovered colon cleansing, a gentle internal bath that aids the body in the detoxification process. Cleansing helped me to heal, and I’ve dedicated my life to helping others rebuild their health and well-being,” she affirms.

According to Drew, over four million people suffer from constipation in the U.S. “Roughly two million doctor visits a year make it one of the most common gastrointestinal issues today. Almost everyone, at one time, has been constipated,” she says. Drew and her team at Cleansing Concepts are on a mission to educate others about digestive health. “Colon cancer is the third most diagnosed cancer and second leading cause of cancer-related death in America. A healthy, clean colon is the first step to achieving your optimal level of health. You don’t have to live with chronic constipation.”

Constipation is a condition in which it is difficult, and even painful, to have a bowel movement. “People suffering from constipation complain of hard or pellet-like stools, fewer than three bowel movements per week, and straining with bowel movements. They normally feel bloated, uncomfortable and sluggish,” explains Drew. While she notes that the condition is often considered temporary and non-threatening, left untreated it can lead to many other health issues. “Medical problems that are caused by constipation include headaches, fatigue, moodiness and depression, hemorrhoids, anal fissures or tears, gas, lower back pain, skin

problems, body odor, indigestion and abdominal pains.”

Traditionally, doctors typically prescribe laxatives, drugs or surgery for constipation relief. “These methods will only temporarily treat the symptoms and often have harmful side effects,” says Drew. “One of the safest and most effective treatments of chronic constipation is colon cleansing, a safe and gentle flow of warm, purified water into the large intestines without using pressure. This gentle internal bath assists your body in the natural detoxification process and is the safest and the most effective way to wake up your digestive system and get it working properly.”

Cleansing Concepts has several state-ofthe-art facilities that offer quality colon hydrotherapy and other services at affordable pricing. Heal-Our-World Checklist

Our current systems and practices are depleting the Earth’s resources at an increasing rate well beyond its capacity to renew itself. According to the World Wildlife Fund, it takes a year-and-a-half to generate the resources we use in one year. That’s an unsustainable path for the planet’s future.

The world needs topsoil to grow 95 percent of its food, and yet the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimated in 2019 that 90 percent of the Earth’s topsoil is likely to be at risk by 2050.

Such statistics seem daunting, but if each of us reduces their individual ecological footprint, together we can make a difference. Here is an action checklist. Consult it often and complete one action at a time. Think of incremental change as hope.

Foods and Goods

■ Plant a produce garden for homegrown sustenance.

■ Build a compost bin in the yard.

■ Shop at local farms and farmers markets.

■ Join a community-supported agriculture group.

■ Eat a meatless meal at least once a week.

■ Recycle paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and metals.

■ Use reusable water bottles.

■ Shop with reusable bags.

■ Buy organic and regenerative organic foods.

■ Buy local, sustainably sourced and packaged products.

■ Choose products with less packaging to reduce waste.

Water

■ Take fewer and shorter showers.

■ Run the dishwasher only when it is full.

■ Fix leaks throughout the house.

■ Buy natural-fabric clothing; avoid synthetic garments.

■ Wash clothes in larger loads, on shorter cycles and in cold water; add a filter to absorb most microfibers.

■ Wash the car less often.

■ Avoid watering the lawn or power washing the home and walkways.

■ Set up a rain barrel to catch water for the garden.

■ Plant drought-tolerant plants.

Transportation

■ Walk, bike and take public transportation over driving.

■ Drive a small car; turn off the engine when idling more than 30 seconds.

■ Regularly service the car; change air filters, fill tires and maintain emission control systems.

■ Avoid short airplane trips; take a bus or train instead.

Energy Use and Toxins at Home

■ Choose energy-saving light bulbs and appliances.

■ Insulate walls, windows and ceilings.

■ Consider double-paned windows.

■ Keep thermostat low in winter and high in summer and strategically open windows.

■ Unplug electronics when not in use.

■ Hang-dry clothes.

■ Choose sustainably produced, nontoxic furniture.

■ Use biodegradable, nontoxic cleaning products.

Overcoming the Pain of Genital and Oral Herpes and Shingles

From the desk of Dr. Howard Robins at The Healing Center in New York City

Did You Have Chickenpox or a “Cold Sore”?

Most everyone answers “yes” to this question. If you answered yes, then you have a herpes infection. Both types of viral infections are easily transferred by contact with someone that has a current outbreak. You likely may have both!

Herpes zoster (HZ), commonly known as shingles, is a viral disease characterized by a painful skin rash with blisters in a limited area on one side of the body, often in a stripe. The initial infection causes the illness chickenpox, which usually occurs in children and young adults. Once the chickenpox is gone, the virus is not eliminated from the body and can go on to cause shingles. HZ is not the same disease as herpes simplex type 1 and 2, despite the similar name, though both HZ and herpes simplex belong to the same viral family.

mon form of infection. However, both types can be found both orally and genitally! Recurrent outbreaks may occur from time to time, especially in times of stress, using alcohol, or when eating foods high in a protein called L-arginine, found commonly in nuts and chocolate, among other foods.

It Can Be Eliminated!

HZ becomes dormant in some of our nerve cells without causing any symptoms. Many years after a chickenpox infection, the virus may break out of nerve cells and cause a viral infection of the skin in the area around the nerve. The virus may spread from one nerve to another causing a painful rash. Although the rash usually heals within two to four weeks, most people experience nerve pain for months or years, a condition called “postherpetic neuralgia.” In the past, outbreaks usually occurred in the elderly, but now it is common for anyone at any age that is under great stress or has a compromised immune system.

Herpes simplex 1 and 2 cause the oral or genital forms of what we commonly simply call “herpes.” It also spreads in a way similar to the HZ virus. Herpes simplex is a viral disease caused by both herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2. Oral herpes, the visible symptoms of which are often called “cold sores” or “fever blisters,” is an infection of the face or mouth. Oral herpes is the most common form and genital herpes is the second most com-

Treatments with antivirals can reduce outbreaks and may alleviate the severity of symptomatic episodes but will not get rid of the infection. Medical ozone is the only medicine known to destroy and rid the body of this horrible infection.

Please don’t believe the commercials on television saying you can never get rid of it. Though with no promises or guarantees, medical ozone has been used all over the world to treat infections that normally cannot be fixed, i.e., herpes in all its forms. Medical ozone is a gas that when it enters the body intravenously acts like “glue” to all viruses, bacteria, fungus, yeast and mold. It destroys or inactivates them so the body can remove them completely.

Most importantly, medical ozone does it without harmful adverse reactions or side effects so typical with pharmaceuticals. In more than 50 countries, over 45,000 physicians have been using it worldwide for over 70 years to successfully and safely treat diseases such as herpes.

So, don’t give up hope and don’t wait! It is absolutely possible to eliminate herpes from your body.

The Core of It All

Cuore in Italian, coeur in French and cor in Latin: all three words mean the same thing—heart. Our core muscles are the “heart and soul” of our body. Every day we are bombarded with information on how “strengthening our core” can reduce back pain, lead to a flatter abdominal wall, and even reduce anxiety, fatigue and intestinal issues. In our zealousness to obtain this nirvana, we do a myriad of exercises designed to strengthen this area by contracting the outer abdominal muscles with endless “crunches.”

An Alexander Technique (AT) teacher understands the core muscles of the body in a somewhat different way. In Alexander, we help our students bring to consciousness the synergy between the muscles of postural support and the respiratory muscles. The psoas muscles are the muscles of posture and movement, and they intersect with the diaphragm at the solar plexus. This connection between the psoas and the diaphragm forms the true support for our body and gives us fuller respiration, a stronger voice, and greater flexibility. Most discomfort in the body—especially back pain—is caused by a shortened psoas. Lessons in the Alexander Technique encourage the lengthening of the psoas which, in turn, tones the outer abdominal muscles. No crunches needed!

It was the ancient Greeks who named these “muscles of the loin” the psoas. The psoai influence all the major muscle groups of the body and are involuntary. Voluntary muscles can be controlled by our conscious thought—for example, chopping vegetables or lifting weights. Involuntary muscles work mostly unconsciously; they “whisper” to us. They are intuited. Respiratory muscles are also mostly involuntary and are controlled by the autonomic nervous system. In AT, we become consciously aware of these muscles, and when we connect to them, we engage our full body in everything we do.

Our bodies have two psoas muscles, one attached to each leg. The psoas muscles link the legs to the sides of the lumbar spine. The psoas muscle goes from the twelfth thoracic vertebra—located around the bottom of the ribcage—and descends down the side of the lumbar spine, crosses over the hip joint, and inserts at the lesser trochanter at the neck of the femur.

Since our psoas muscles are crucially involved in posture, we can start by observing how we are sitting. Is there evidence of slumping down into the chair? Slumping is a fatiguing posture that strains the neck and back and shortens the psoas. Instead of tensing and fixing our bodies to sit up straight, we can imagine our chair is an elevator platform rising up underneath us. We may put a small pillow or a folded-up towel behind our back so that when leaning against the pillow, we will be supported. This helps us become “comfortably erect” which will not only greatly improve posture, but it will also lengthen and strengthen the psoas muscles.

In the next few issues, we will discover more ways to uncover and strengthen our core muscles.

The Power of Transformative Experiences in Holistic Healing

In the realm of holistic healing, practitioners serve as guides, ushering individuals on journeys of self-discovery and transformation, whether in serene retreats or private offices. Their role extends beyond conventional treatment; it involves creating a nurturing environment for clients to explore their innermost selves without judgment. Transformative experiences, facilitated through diverse techniques such as mindfulness, energy work, and somatic practices, lie at the heart of holistic healing. Here are tips for practitioners to create the most transformative experiences:

1. Cultivate Presence: The practitioner’s ability to be fully present with the client is paramount. By listening deeply and holding space without judgment, practitioners create a space of trust and safety conducive to transformation.

2. Encourage Self-Exploration: Empower clients to delve into their most healing environments, encouraging self-reflection and introspection. Through guided inquiry and openended questioning, practitioners can help clients discover healing spaces within.

3. Foster Embodiment: Incorporate practices that invite clients to connect with their bodies and sensations. From breathwork and movement to body-centered therapies, embodied experiences can facilitate profound shifts in awareness and healing.

4. Utilize Virtual Healing: Harness the transformative potential of virtual sessions by leveraging sound, visualizations and guidance. Through technologies like video conferencing and immersive audio, practitioners can create virtual environments that facilitate healing and expansion of consciousness. Clients can experience profound shifts in perception and awareness, even from the comfort of their own homes.

5. Embrace Creativity: Tailor experiences to each client’s unique needs and preferences, infusing creativity and spontaneity into sessions. Whether through guided visualization, expressive arts, or nature-based practices, creativity can unlock new pathways for healing and transformation.

Travel to far-off places is not a necessity for self-discovery. Practitioners can help clients shift realities and transform even from their small urban offices. It’s all about their ability to create that transformative experience for their clients during their short session. Utilizing creative, immersive, all-senses experiences— such as guided visualization and multi-sensory environments—can be highly effective in this regard. Moreover, even virtual sessions can be transformative by creating a space where clients feel safe to explore and grow.

In essence, holistic healing is about awakening individuals to their innate capacity for healing and self-transformation. By following these tips and embracing the transformative power of holistic practices, practitioners can guide their clients on a profound journey toward wholeness, without any actual travel.

Another Leap Forward in Dental Healing: IMPLANT TEETH

Ensuring the longevity of your natural teeth should always stand as the primary goal for both patients and dentists alike. Regrettably, there are instances where dental damage reaches a point where extractions become the only solution. Traditionally, dentures stood as the sole recourse for patients seeking to restore their smiles. However, what many are unaware of is that dentures offer less than 10 percent of the biting efficiency of natural teeth. Adding to the concern, dentures often shift within the mouth, necessitating regular removal for cleaning. Yet, in today’s dental landscape, the options extend far beyond dentures alone. Dr. Jeffrey Etess has been a pioneering figure in full mouth dental implants for over 23 years in Manhattan and Long Island. Amidst the proliferation of “dental implant centers,” it’s vital to exercise caution. While many of these dentists may possess commendable qualifications, their tenure is often brief at these “implant centers”. When it comes to dental procedures, reliability is paramount. With Dr. Etess, you can trust in his enduring commitment to addressing all your dental needs, ensuring peace of mind and lasting satisfaction.

Full arch implant surgery represents a comprehensive dental intervention aimed at replacing all teeth in either the upper and/ or lower jaw with dental implants, commonly referred to as the All-on-X implant procedure. Throughout this procedure, Dr. Etess strategically implants four or more dental fixtures into the jawbone, serving as the bedrock for a new set of prosthetic all-ceramic teeth. These implants are crafted from materials such as titanium alloy, zirconia ceramic, or

Full arch implant surgery emerges as an exceptionally effective and enduring solution for individuals grappling with substantial tooth loss. With diligent care and upkeep, these implants boast an impressive lifespan spanning decades, furnishing patients with a natural-looking, fully functional set of teeth that markedly enhances their overall quality of life.

a hybrid blend of titanium and zirconium. The choice of implant material is tailored to meet the specific needs and preferences of each patient, ensuring the selection of the most biocompatible option. This meticulous selection guarantees the seamless fusion of the implant with the jawbone, establishing a secure and stable foundation for prosthetic teeth that not only appear natural but also function flawlessly.

Dr. Etess conducts a comprehensive examination to ascertain the patient’s candidacy for the procedure. This evaluation entails a meticulous review of the patient’s dental and medical history, complemented by traditional X-rays, CT scans, and the utilization of stateof-the-art 3D intraoral photogrammetry. This advanced technology provides a detailed assessment of the existing jawbone condition, ensuring a thorough understanding of the patient’s unique anatomical considerations. Subsequently, Dr. Etess formulates a tailored treatment plan meticulously crafted around the patient’s specific dental wants and needs. This often incorporates cutting-edge computer-guided technology to meticulously plot the optimal placement of dental implants and design a flawless set of prosthetic teeth. While the procedure typically proceeds under local anesthesia administered by Dr. Etess, some individuals may opt for or require sedation, expertly administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. This ensures enhanced comfort and tranquility during the procedure. The dental implants are then precisely positioned into the jawbone, seamlessly accompanied by the attachment of a temporary set of prosthetic teeth on the very same day.

Remaining at the forefront of the latest dental advancements isn’t just a commitment—it’s Dr. Etess’s primary focus. To ensure our patients’ safety, we employ advanced UV air filtration and rigorous surface disinfection protocols. It’s vital to understand that all dentistry isn’t created equal; Dr. Etess sets himself apart by delivering unmatched, top-tier care. Settling for anything less than the best when addressing your dental needs is unnecessary. Our aim is clear: to achieve the highest standard of excellence. The era of making excuses is behind us. If you’re in search of the finest, safest, healthiest and most reliable solutions for your dental concerns, and are interested in exploring cutting-edge concepts in modern dentistry, we encourage you to reach out to Integrative Dental Specialists and schedule an appointment with Dr. Etess today.

Jeffrey Etess, DMD, NMD, IBDM, graduated in the top 10% from the prestigious University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Be the One Who Finds the Gold

When you look for the good in others, you discover the best in yourself.

Humans love digging in the dirt—and not just in the garden. These days there are more and more places where we see and hear people talking about someone’s dirt. Whether it’s in the news, social media, popular television programs or magazines, it’s hard to get through a day without hearing folks talking negatively about others. Why do people love to dig up the dirt? Because making others look bad can temporarily make us feel good. Research shows that gossip helps people form bonds, vent emotions and provides entertainment. Oftentimes, we may find ourselves talking about someone’s “dirt” and focusing on what’s wrong with them and aren’t even aware that we are doing it.

We all have dirt—and plenty of it—so it’s not hard to find it in others. But what if we consciously decided, from now on, to be the one who finds the gold in other people? In addition to all that dirt, we also have hidden gems and wonderful nuggets of gold. The only trait we need to embody is a willingness to look deeper, under the surface.

Finding the Gold in Emily

Years ago, when I was a new teacher, I had a student named Emily who would lash out at anyone who attempted to get close to her. Despite her best intentions, she struggled to form healthy relationships. Emily was known for her outbursts in her community. Instead of trying to understand the source of her behavior, most people responded with frustration and judgment. And then a young woman in her school, Shari, reached out to her. Shari was able to see past Emily’s hurtful actions and recognize the wounded soul beneath. They started to walk home from school together, and Emily showed Shari the animal shelter where she regularly volunteered. Shari learned that Emily was considered one of the best on staff at finding ways to calm down the most agitated animals. She could reach them in a way no one else could. It was her gold.

For those willing to mine for the gold, know that it will come with challenges. Oftentimes the ones who are acting out the most are experiencing a great deal of emotional pain. As they say, hurt people hurt people. While it can be difficult terrain to navigate, it’s also a journey ripe with the potential for a mine filled with jewels. When we work on expanding our hearts to accept others, dirt and all, we can uplift their hearts to new places—as well as our own.

Maybe we, too, have allowed our past hurts to inadvertently cause pain to others? Even just considering this possibility can help us to embark on a journey of self-healing. If we are to “be the change we wish to see in the world,” then our work ought to focus on finding the gold in others. It is there in every human, waiting for someone to discover it.

If we’re lucky, we already have friends in our lives who remind us of this often. How many times have others seen past our dirt to remind us of our gold? If we’re truly all mirrors to one another, then finding their gold also mirrors the goodness and gold within ourselves. So, in our daily interactions, let’s be willing to look for the gold in others and do our part to make this world a more beautiful place.

Farm Vacations

American Agritourism Grows in Post-Pandemic Times

Long a staple of European travel, agritourism is growing in popularity in the United States, as concrete-weary urbanites seek out a taste of country living and a way to support small-scale farms. The concept broadly covers any activity linking agriculture with tourism, and it takes as many forms as there are farms. Farm stay options run the gamut from helping with farm chores like feeding chickens and collecting eggs to structured classes on weaving, soap making or beekeeping.

“Living in towns and cities, most Americans are very disconnected from nature and agriculture. Farm stays are helping to make an important urban-rural connection,” says Scottie Jones, founder of Farm Stay USA, an association connecting travelers with working farms and ranches that offer hands-on opportunities and overnight accommodations.

Since 2007, Jones has operated her own farm stay, the 70-acre Leaping Lamb Farm, in Alsea, Oregon. She has been surprised at many guests’ “agricultural illiteracy”, underscoring the importance of the educational experiences that farm stays like hers offer. “I used to send guests off to graze in the garden alone, but then realized many people don’t know what carrots look like in the field,” says Jones. “I would get questions like, ‘Don’t you need a brown cow to make chocolate milk?’”

More than one in three guests to Leaping Lamb Farm return for subsequent stays, a very high retention rate for the lodging industry. “We get to watch families grow up as they return to the farm year after year. That has a real impact, as we need the next generation to get involved in farming and food systems,” Jones notes.

Justin Bolois, of Los Angeles, got introduced to agritourism in Tuscany, later seeking out the farm experience closer to home. “We had been living in New York City at the time and came to value the expansive countryside being in Italy,” he says. “The family, which ran a vineyard, would cook incredible meals for us. Vacations are great when they mirror the experience of living in a place, and agritourism is one of the closest ways to access that.”

Bolois and his wife later discovered Straus Home Ranch, in Marshall, California, and fell in love with the place and its people so deeply they hosted their wedding there. The ranch was founded by a pair of pioneers in organic farming and land conservation in Marin County, and it was later revitalized to include a farm stay by siblings Vivien, Miriam and Michael Straus after their parents’ deaths. “You can tell that Vivian and Michael not only care about what they do, they also care about you, and about you enjoying their life mission. That’s a very special bond to develop with an agritourism owner,” Bolois says.

The ranch features special touches, including a beautifully equipped kitchen to shuck local oysters or to host private chefs for farm-fresh meals served on a handcrafted table made of reclaimed redwood from their old hay barn. There is no cellphone reception on the ranch, encouraging guests to kayak, hike, birdwatch and stargaze.

“After being cooped up during COVID, people want to see wildlife and biodiversity again. People are aching to disconnect from their screens and reconnect with nature—what we call ‘dirt therapy’,” says Ashley Walsh, president and founder of Poconos Organics, one of the largest Regenerative Organic Certified farms on the continent, sprawling across 380 acres in Long Pond, Pennsylvania.

Walsh built the boutique resort, The Village at Pocono, with her grandfather when she was 25 as a sister destination to the farm. The accommodations feature full kitchens where guests can cook a cornucopia of produce fresh from the fields. Visitors can enjoy luxurious amenities on site, then pop over to the farm to attend hands-on cooking classes, wellness retreats, farm tours and more.

Beyond connecting with rural life, farm stays are a meaningful, mutually beneficial way for farmers and consumers to reconnect on a personal level. “Agritourism puts a face to farming. We want to educate people so they can make better choices in food and get to experience what really fresh food tastes like,” Jones says.

Sustainable Travel

Wanderlust With the Earth in Mind

Whether travel is enjoyed for much-needed relaxation, cultural immersion or the opportunity to volunteer in an eco-program spotlighting permaculture or farming, journeying to places far and near greatly enriches our human experience. During these environmentally critical times, our travels may carry a hefty price tag that the planet can no longer afford. This does not mean we need to sacrifice adventure. Every traveler can make a difference not only for the Earth but for the local communities they visit.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, 8.1 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions can be attributed to travel and tourism. Being in the know and taking more responsibility for our environmental impact can be easier than commonly assumed, all the while inviting unexpected enjoyment.

Amanda Reiser, a global sustainable tourism specialist based in Pennsylvania, encourages her clients to consider the three pillars of sustainable tourism: environment, economy and equity. “We all can play a part in fostering sustainable tourism and creating a more sustainable world," she explains, noting that a

green-minded approach benefits not only the traveler but also the destination. "Ask yourself: Does my participation in this activity create a negative impact on the natural environment? Are there any actions to help reduce my environmental impact?"

A traveler’s footprint extends to the socio-cultural fabric of the destination, too. Reiser reminds travelers, “You may be in your destination for only a week, but the people who live there year-round feel the impacts of visitors every day, for better or worse.” By respecting local traditions and engaging locals in a respectful and inclusive manner, tourists can contribute positively to the cultural integrity of the communities they visit.

Greener Horizons

Instead of hitting all the trendy, transportation-reliant sights, opt to slow down and stay in one place for a longer period. This not only invites a richer, deeper experience but minimizes the need to hop onto another plane or bus. To support the local economy of a desired destination, buy locally produced items and book small, private hotels and inns, rather than international chains. Dining at locally owned eateries supports small business while giving travelers higher-quality fare and a more authentic cultural experience.

When planning a trip, contemplate the many treasures of domestic travel or choose a location that is not drowning in overtourism. The influx of tourists can significantly strain fragile ecosystems, deplete resources and disrupt the lives of local communities. Consider destinations that can be crossed via boat, train or bus, such as the New York-Montreal border or clusters of countries in Europe or Southeast Asia.

Packing With Purpose

Making small choices even when packing a suitcase goes a long way. Bring eco-friendly sunscreen and opt for brands that avoid chemicals harmful to coral reefs and tropical environments. Pack a cloth tote bag for daily excursions and a reusable water bottle to avoid single-use plastics. Remember that by using plastic containers more than once, we reduce the amount of waste that is released over time. Try not to overpack—bring only the most necessary items, preferably those that can be recycled, reused and disposed of properly.

Sojourning With Savvy

To avoid getaway glitches, become acquainted with local laws and regulations. When planning a fishing excursion, for example, identify the legally designated fishing spots and avoid harming endangered species, which are heavily protected under national and international regulations. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) offers an interactive map to show where legal fishing areas are by state (fws.gov/fishing/map). Historical resources should also be taken into consideration. For instance, the Florida Keys require special permits for cultural, maritime, heritage and archeological explorations, including snorkeling expeditions of ancient shipwrecks and other unique, underwater sites.

It is always best to ask whether a destination is a naturally protected sanctuary or requires special permits. The FSW is a good reference site for information on activities in national wildlife refuges and the endangered animals that live there. To enjoy these areas to their fullest, make sure to find a knowledgeable local tour guide that understands the laws of the land.

Traveling consciously involves personal responsibility toward the environment through individual actions. “You can make a difference,” says David Knight, a professor of tourism management at Colorado State University. “Regenerative travel is not just leaving things the way you found them. It’s a matter of giving more than you take.”

Don’t Be Greenwashed

Greenwashing is a corrupt practice by companies that claim to support conscious tourism but fail to live up to their claims. Vetting businesses when planning a trip means delving into thirdparty research and reports to check the fine print. Before booking, make sure the ecolodge or eco-touring company being considered has a legitimate certification on their website. The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) sets global standards and provides accreditations for destination managers, hotels and tour operators. There are also certifying groups in specific locations, such as the Sustainable Tourism Association of Hawaii, and others that are accredited by the GSTC, like Preferred by Nature.

For tourism operations that have not been certified, the onus is on the traveler. “Check with the local chambers of commerce. They should know who is working toward sustainability and can direct you to those aligned with what you are looking for,” says Claudia Gil Arroyo, an agricultural agent for the Rutgers University Cooperative Extension, in New Jersey. “If a tour operator or destination does not have a clear goal on how they’re contributing to the environment, it is unlikely that they are actually green.”

For tourism to be truly sustainable, it must also be economically viable for local communities. Economic sustainability ensures that tourism dollars benefit the local economy, creating fair wages, local sourcing and community empowerment, and allowing communities to thrive while preserving their cultural heritage. When traveling, support local, eco-friendly businesses that provide sustainable products.

A good example is agritourism—a vacation stay at a participating local farm—which can provide exciting, hands-on learning experiences. “Get out there. Look for your local growers and check out the services and activities they offer,” says Gil Arroyo. “People have this idea that agritourism is just picking your pumpkins and that’s it, and there’s so much more that can be done at a farm.”

Eco-Friendly North American Parks

North America is home to many national parks—63 in the United States and 48 in Canada. Here are five exceptional examples that provide a sustainable, eco-friendly vacation experience.

Yellowstone National Park is known for its geothermal features, including the famous Old Faithful geyser. It also has a diverse range of wildlife, including grizzly bears, wolves and herds of bison. This U.S. park has implemented sustainable practices such as renewable energy installations, waste management programs and educational initiatives to promote conservation.

Great Bear Rainforest is a temperate locale on the central and northern coasts of British Columbia, Canada. It is home to a variety of wildlife, including the rare Kermode bear, also known as the spirit bear. The park works closely with First Nations communities, implementing conservation measures to protect biodiversity and support eco-conscious businesses.

Everglades National Park is a unique wetland ecosystem in Florida known as the “River of Grass”. It provides habitat for numerous endangered species, such as the Florida panther and the West Indian manatee. The park employs restoration efforts to preserve the natural water flow and conserve wildlife, with plenty of opportunities for eco-friendly recreational activities like kayaking and hiking.

Cape Breton Highlands National Park is located on the northern tip of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. It offers breathtaking coastal views, rugged cliffs and stunning hiking trails. The park implements waste reduction, energy conservation, ecological restoration and educational programs to promote environmental stewardship.

Redwood National and State Parks, in California, are home to the tallest trees on Earth, the majestic coast redwoods. Sustainable eco-practices include trail maintenance and restoration, wildlife protection, interpretation programs to educate visitors about the delicate ecosystem, and conservation efforts to combat climate change and preserve redwood habitat.

Relief for Parkinson’s Patients

How Traditional and Complementary Interventions Can Help

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, more than 10 million people worldwide and nearly 1 million Americans are living with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Every year, nearly 90,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with this ailment, which causes the gradual loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. Symptoms that develop slowly over years include tremors; stiff muscles; a slow, shuffling gait; and difficulties with movement and speech.

There is no cure for PD, and by the time a patient is diagnosed, they may have already lost 60 to 80 percent of their dopamine-producing cells. According to Kenneth Sharlin, a boardcertified neurologist and certified functional medicine doctor, the first line of defense for PD is levodopa (L-Dopa), a pharmaceutical that is converted to dopamine in the body. “Unfortunately, natural strategies don’t get a lot of research, so no supplement has been shown to effectively treat the disease,” he asserts. “Mucuna pruriens, a tropical legume that grows in Africa, Asia and the Pacific Islands, naturally contains levodopa, but studies have shown it to be unreliable.”

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in controlling memory, mood, sleep, learning, concentration and movement. “If the car doesn’t have gas, then you can’t drive it,” explains Sharlin. Once a patient is taking levodopa to bring dopamine levels up, complementary strategies can be employed to help manage PD symptoms by as much as 73 percent, according to a panel of doctors participating in The Parkinson’s Solutions Summit. Exercise, sleep and even intimacy with a partner can all be managed well once the car has “gas” to drive it.

Exercise

According to Sharlin, the number one strategy for PD patients to maintain their motor function is exercise such as bicycling, chair yoga, movement classes in warm water pools, Pilates and dance. A meta-analysis published in Gerontology and Geriatrics analyzed 15 randomized controlled trials involving 498 participants in several countries to investigate the health impacts of self-directed physical activity (SDPA) on patients with early and mid-stage PD. The study examined the effects of moderate-intensity exercises, including aerobics, dance, strength training, flexibility exercises and Nordic walking. The researchers found that the SDPA significantly enhanced gait function, balance, mobility, function and postural control.

Gut Health

Monitoring gut function is very important for patients with PD, as constipation is very common,” states Trupti Gokani, a boardcertified neurologist, health and mindset coach, and Ayurvedic expert. Improving gut function with the help of key nutrients from vegetables, fruits, clean protein, nuts and seeds, olive oil, herbs and spices has been shown to slow the progression of the disease. It is best to choose organic when possible, as that will decrease the exposure to brain-toxic chemicals. A gluten-free diet has also been found to improve PD symptoms.

Sharlin recommends an antioxidant-rich diet packed with polyphenols, along with green tea that contains catechins called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a natural antioxidant with neuroprotective properties.

Stress Reduction

Anxiety linked to PD can worsen the symptoms,” Gokani points out. Chronic stress is a risk factor for PD, because it elevates the

hormone cortisol, which can interfere with neuronal plasticity and damage dopamineproducing neurons in the brain.

Incorporating deep breathing, meditation and other relaxation techniques is integral to improving the patient’s quality of life. According to Sharlin, “Mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques to self-regulate have a positive impact in regulating Parkinsonism.”

New Test to Confirm Diagnosis

When a patient comes to his office exhibiting PD symptoms, Sharlin now has a new way to confirm a PD diagnosis by taking a small tissue sample and sending it to the lab to look for a neural protein called alpha synuclein, which is associated with PD. In a 2023 National Institutes of Health study involving 428 people with PD and 120 control volunteers, this skin biopsy was found to be very accurate, with 92.7 percent sensitivity.

Deep Brain Stimulation

According to Sharlin, deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a well-researched and well-developed treatment for PD. The surgical therapy involves implanting electrodes within areas of the brain to interrupt irregular signals that cause movement-related symptoms. A 2019 retrospective study of 400 patients that underwent DBS implantation found that 75 percent of the participants felt the procedure provided symptom control.

Focused ultrasound is another PD tool, us ing ultrasound beams to destroy areas in the brain cells that are causing movement problems. This procedure is permanent and can be done on only one side of the brain, so it helps symptoms on only one side of the body. Treatment to both sides could cause speech, swallowing or memory problems. Sharlin notes that the results from focused ultrasound are no better than DBS and in volve more intense intervention. Also, not all Parkinson’s patients are good candidates for this procedure.

A Lesson in Chinese Veterinary Medicine Terminology

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) uses various therapies, such as acupuncture, diet, herbal therapy, and massage to restore balance and harmony to a pet’s body while treating and preventing disease. TCVM is an adaptation and extension of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which is based on the concept that the body is a microcosm of the surrounding universe. This means that the natural laws and forces that govern the world also influence the body’s internal environment. This article will help you understand some key Chinese Medicine terms and shed light on their meanings and significance.

Vital Energy

At the heart of TCVM lies the concept of qi—pronounced chi—an invisible energy force that is in constant motion in a healthy body, nourishing organs and tissues and maintaining overall health. If the qi is weakened or blocked, illness results. Understanding qi is fundamental to diagnosing and treating body imbalances.

Qi flows through the body via meridians, which are pathways that connect various body parts. Twelve main meridians correspond to a specific organ system, and eight extraordinary meridians regulate the flow of qi throughout the body.

Stagnation occurs when blood and qi aren’t moving freely through the meridians, creating energy blocks that lead to pain and disease.

Five Elements

The five elements, which are aspects of qi, include:

• Earth meridians, which are associated with the stomach and spleen. A weak Earth qi leads to pensiveness.

• Fire meridians, which are associated with the heart and small intestines. A weak Fire qi can lead to anxiety, restlessness and insomnia.

• Metal meridians, which are associated with the lungs and large intestine. A Metal qi imbalance can lead to grief and sadness.

• Water meridians, which are associated with the kidneys and bladder. A weak Water qi can lead to problems with water metabolism, urination and fertility.

• Wood meridians, which are associated with the liver and gallbladder. A weak Wood qi can lead to indecisiveness.

Pattern Diagnosis

Pattern diagnosis is an essential TCVM component that refers to customizing a patient’s treatment based on clinical information gathered according to the following principles:

• Yin-Yang theory  - According to Chinese theory, yin and yang are two forces in the universe. Yin is negative, dark and

feminine, while yang is positive, bright and masculine. A cold, deficient and interior pattern is considered yin, while a hot, excessive and exterior pattern is considered yang. Most disharmony patterns have elements of both.

• Five elements theory  - The interactions and relationships between the five elements help develop a pattern diagnosis. These elements are constantly moving and changing with enhancement and inhibition on each side.

• Five fundamental substances - The five fundamental substances are qi (energy), xue (blood), jinge (body fluids), jing (essence), and shen (spirit).

• Six common pathogens - The conditions that cause illness include wind, cold, dampness, dryness, fire and heat.

Excess and Deficiency

Four pathological yin-yang imbalances can occur, including:

• Yang excess - When yang energy isn’t regulated by the body’s cooling power, clinical signs typically include high fever, red or purple tongue, and strong pulse.

• Yin excess - When the body’s cooling power overwhelms the warming energy, clinical signs include pain, swelling, edema (i.e., a painless swelling beneath the skin surface caused by fluid retention), loose stool, pale or purple tongue, and slow pulse.

• Yang deficiency - If the body’s warming power can’t equalize the cooling energy, potential clinical signs include cold extremities, edema, loose stool, chronic back pain, incontinence, fertility disorders, pale tongue, rear limb weakness, and weak pulse.

• Yin deficiency - If the body’s cooling power isn’t equalized by the warming

energy, clinical signs may include generalized weakness, thirst, restlessness, anxiety, red or dry tongue, and thready or fast pulse.

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine treatments

TCVM treatment uses a holistic approach that addresses the mind, body and spirit, as well as social factors. Treatment modalities to tonify (i.e., strengthen or nourish) the body’s energy include acupuncture, herbal medicine, food therapy, and tui-na.

Acupuncture uses needles at certain pressure points in the body that correspond to meridians to rebalance or unblock the body’s energy flow. Acupressure works on the same basic principle as acupuncture, but uses pressure and massage instead of needles.

Herbal medicine uses particular herbal ingredients in individualized combinations and formulas, depending on the patient’s disease pattern. The ingredients can be in powder, tea, pill or capsule form.

Food therapy uses diet to treat and prevent body imbalances by tailoring the patient’s diet based on their diagnosis and the food’s energetics.

Tui-na is Chinese medical massage that manipulates acupoints and meridians to promote qi circulation and correct organ system imbalances.

While TCVM can benefit pets with physical and emotional ailments, it can also help healthy pets maintain their state of balance and well-being.

Michel Selmer, DVM, MS, MS, CTCVMP (integrative medicine), CVMMP (chiropractic), leads the Integrative Medicine Department at Long Island Veterinary Specialists. If you think TCVM could benefit your pet, book an appointment for your four-legged friend by calling 516-501-1700 or visiting livs.org. See ad, page 31.

Taking Pets on Family Trips

Holistic Tips for Stress-Free Traveling

ets are part of our family, and ensuring their comfort during travel speaks volumes about our bond with them. Travel, whether by car, train or plane, can significantly affect pets, leading to symptoms of anxiety such as excessive barking, whining, pacing and, in some cases, aggression or withdrawal. To address a pet’s anxiety, it is critical to understand their perspective. Travel disrupts their feeling of safety. Mitigating this disturbance with natural and comforting interventions ensures that such journeys can evolve into

Anecdotal reports from dog owners suggest that cannabidiol (CBD), which is abundantly found in hemp oil, can significantly aid in managing anxiety. These observations are supported by a study conducted at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in which 83 percent of participating dogs demonstrated a decrease in stress or anxiety-related behaviors after consuming CBD chews prior to

• Herbal Supplements: Herbs like chamomile, valerian root and passionflower have been used for centuries to relieve anxiety in humans, and are equally as effective in pets. They can be administered in the form of treats or capsules. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) have been reported to enhance relaxation behaviors such as resting and sleeping, and to diminish dog barking in rescue shelters.

• Aromatherapy: When diffused in a pet’s travel space, essential oils such as lavender and frankincense can create a serene environment and significantly reduce stress and anxiety. Choose therapeutic-grade oils and verify with a veterinarian that they are safe for pets, as certain essential oils can be harmful to our furry friends.

• Acupressure: By applying pressure to specific points on a pet’s body, we can help release tension and encourage a

calm state. It is especially useful for pets that are less amenable to oral supplements, offering a noninvasive path to relaxation. Pet owners can be trained in this modality by a veterinarian or acupressure therapist that specializes in treating pets.

Managing Travel Anxiety

Dr. Mary Burch, a certified applied animal behaviorist, emphasizes the value of taking preparatory steps as early as possible before the family embarks on a journey. Introducing a dog to the car well before a trip, for example, can significantly help make them more comfortable. This method involves gradually acclimating the pooch to the vehicle in a series of steps—from simply spending time in a parked car to taking short drives. Such preparatory measures allow pets to become familiar with the environment of a vehicle, associating it with positive experiences and rewards, thereby easing their anxiety and making travel a more enjoyable experience for all.

Practical Tips for Pet Owners

• Start early. Gradually acclimate a pet to their travel carrier and intended mode of transportation.

• Maintain a routine. As much as possible, stick to the pet’s regular feeding and exercise schedule to provide a sense of normalcy.

• Stay calm. Pets often pick up on their owner’s emotions; maintaining a calm demeanor can help reassure them.

• Consult a holistic veterinarian: Before introducing any new supplement or remedy, consult with a professional to ensure it is appropriate for a pet’s health status and needs.

Connecting to Sentient Earth

Each April, Mother Nature spills blossoms from her apron as songbirds trill the songs of their ancestors and prepare for the next generation. Contrary to widespread human assumption, many animal species grieve, express empathy and form bonds that still elude our complete understanding. Trees communicate through complex root systems. Plants respond to environmental and emotional stimuli. Wolves howl their soulsong, and particles of desert sand emit bell-like frequencies if the wind’s provocation is just right. Our planet is alive on levels beyond our senses or scientific instruments.

To the ancient Greeks, Gaia (also known as Gaea) was a living being separate from the gods that ruled the Earth—a primordial, maternal entity from which all life springs. Through the

centuries, luminaries such as Plato or 1970s scientist James Lovelock have endeavored to define this life force, but perhaps 12thcentury abbess and visionary Hildegard von Bingen came closest when she coined the word veriditas to denote “the greening power of nature”. Whether we see this innate energy as simple photosynthesis or handiwork of a higher power, sentient Earth is our all-providing, intelligent resource from cradle to grave.

Many of us can remember a moment in childhood when nature startled our consciousness, be it in a drop of pond water under a microscope or in the shocking power of a summer thunderstorm. We ran barefoot over her grassy lap, made wishes on stars and boggled our minds trying to grasp the concept of light years. This intimate relationship with the planet and her cosmic connections may dwindle in adulthood, but something deep within our souls—if we are honest with ourselves—longs to reunite with anima, Earth’s ever-present, pervasive energy.

Earth Day is an invitation to sync our hearts to Gaia’s force, feel the holy purpose of roots beneath our footsteps and witness her sanctity by planting a simple container garden or inhaling her breath of spring deeply into our lungs, exhaling gratitude.

Traversing Dimensions of Sleep

Be assured you are not just ‘sleeping’ anymore. When you are experiencing another reality that seems vivid to you, it can be another parallel lifetime, or timeline, allowing you to gather many experiences simultaneously. Other times, it will have been a reality constructed for your healing or to conclude something that could not be resolved in the physical realm. You may even be integrating past life experiences or bi-relocating via merkaba travel and experiencing other realities just as real as this one!

As you raise your vibration, we can pass messages to you in your dreamtime. We use the Language of Light—a universal language in the Higher Realms—to communicate with all beings residing in 5D and above. You are still unable, in most cases, to transcribe the frequencies of these Light Languages as they are pulsed to your DNA.

Your dreams are becoming constructs comprised of images that we pull from your subconscious mind. Faces of people or places and references buried deep in your memory are used to build concepts that would otherwise be impossible for us to convey. We thumb through your memory banks as if they were files, looking for clues, like your early experiences and the emotions associated with them.

Then we take the references and draw from them pictures to create scenarios for you to follow— stories that are unique to each of you.

These dreams are not literal, but are made up of evocative and symbolic images, designed to help you feel your way through them. The emotion triggers memory that links to another place or another time, reminding you of something you heard once, or know that you know, or have seen somewhere, or have experienced before, which can now be brought forward and aid you in translation.

For example, an image that makes you feel happy or safe can be pulsed to build trust—such as an old toy, or childhood friend, or home.

Structures represent “structures,” but aren’t literal translations. A house or building with many rooms or floors could represent other dimensions. A dark and subterranean room, lacking in light, can simply mean the 3rd Dimension. An elevated room or structure could depict the Higher Realms. Staircases are the means of Ascension. Mirrors are portals to other parallel realities.

Water represents your spiritual journey. Intensifying waves of energy can often threaten to swamp you. You may dream of running from them, but it is not literally a tsunami! If you are being carried by the waters or have managed to get above them, you are raising your vibration.

Earthquakes can mean the stripping away of old and limiting patterns, the shaking of the foundations of all you have come to understand to be true is crumbling under foot. No one will be able to translate the metaphor of your dream better than you. They are constructed from images in your own mind that reflect the vibration of what we are trying to say to you. A childhood toy may have brought you great comfort, or equally caused you fear. We will draw from the reference of the vibration of how it made you feel.

Pay attention to your dreams. Write them down immediately upon waking and throughout your day as you will gain more clarity around their meaning.
