Jean McClelland's Article Shines a Light on the Power of the Alexander Technique

Congratulations to Natural Awakenings advertising partner Jean McClelland on the publication of her article, The Integration of the Torso as a Prerequisite for Inspired Performance, in the latest edition of the AmSAT Journal, produced by the American Society for the Alexander Technique.

In this insightful paper, McClelland draws from her personal experiences and work with students to illustrate how the Alexander Technique enhances awareness of the internal alignment of posture, movement and breathing muscles—key elements for both vocal and physical support. She emphasizes how this psychophysical alignment fosters a more creative, focused and improvisational mindset. McClelland also reflects on her voice studies with the late Madame Olga Averino, a legendary soprano and voice teacher, who championed “singing on impulse”—a concept rooted in vital energy that ignites the diaphragm, transforming performances from lifeless to inspired.

With over 45 years of experience in performing and teaching voice, McClelland has dedicated herself to helping students connect with this impulse, believing that a conscious synergy of

posture, movement and respiration is essential for achieving a solid vocal technique and a vibrant, inspired performance.

Jean McClelland is a faculty member in the Graduate Program in Acting at Columbia University and a guest lecturer in the music department at William Paterson University. An AmSAT-certified senior teacher of the Alexander Technique, she studied under Carl Stough at his Institute for Breathing Coordination and is one of fewer than a dozen people worldwide personally selected by Stough to teach his work. In addition, she has performed extensively in musical theater and is a member of Actors’ Equity Association. She teaches in-person at One Spirit Learning Alliance and offers both private lessons and group classes, in-person and virtually.

Another Leap Forward in Dental Healing: DOING DENTISTRY RIGHT THE FIRST TIME

Let me tell you a quick story. Recently, a patient who had undergone a successful dental procedure with me about a year ago returned with a new tooth problem. She had visited a “holistic dentist” because their practice was closer to home and “cheaper.” The patient felt uncomfortable from the start, sensing that the other dentist “didn’t inspire confidence,” but went ahead with the procedure because she was already there. The result was a tooth that became very sensitive to biting and temperature. After several visits for “bite adjustments,” the other dentist ultimately recommended either extraction or a root canal. Needless to say, the patient was extremely unhappy with both the outcome and the follow-up care, so she came back to me for help.

Performing a dental procedure correctly the first time is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it saves the patient’s time and finances. Mistakes can lead to costly dental retreatments and unnecessary additional dental work, all of which can affect the patient’s busy schedule and budget. Dental insurance is often unfavorable and unwilling to pay out in such scenarios. Secondly, doing the job right the first time enhances the dentist’s credibility and builds trust with patients and referring dental colleagues. A reputation for accuracy and reliability leads to increased patient confidence in future treatments and greater acceptance

of professional dental recommendations. Thirdly, it reduces patient stress and frustration, as nobody wants to return to the dentist unnecessarily. Knowing that treatment has been completed correctly provides peace of mind and allows patients to focus on other important aspects of their lives. Lastly, it ensures compliance with the standard of dental care, which involves providing safe, effective and ethical treatment that meets professional guidelines and patient needs.

In summary, the importance of performing dental care right the first time cannot be overstated, as it drives efficiency, trust and professional integrity. For example, when I treated the patient with the sensitive tooth, I removed a poorly placed, moisture-contaminated white filling and properly repaired a pulp exposure, which would usually require a root canal in less experienced hands. The patient is now pain-free and could not be happier with the result. Unfortunately, the initial errors have caused the patient to develop unnecessary fear and anxiety, requiring me to help counsel her back to a place where she trusts the dentist again. This situation illustrates the common misconception that all dental care is the same—when, in reality, it most certainly is not.

At Integrative Dental Specialists, Dr. Etess and his team take pride in providing you with the attention you deserve. Staying at the forefront of dental advancements is a top priority for Dr. Etess. Standardizing Acupuncture for Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is estimated to affect 18.4 percent, or about 18 million, American men. Acupuncture has long been used as a treatment with fewer potential side effects than pharmaceutical treatments. Unlike conventional medicine, the application of acupuncture and other forms of Traditional Chinese Medicine my vary by practitioner. A research article published in Karger’s Complementary Medicine Research journal sought to reach consensus on the most effective diagnostic and treatment protocols for clinical use and for future research into the effectiveness of acupuncture. Eleven acupuncture experts named 24 acupoints and between 11 and 15 weekly treatments as an optimal regimen.

Microbiome and Addictive Eating

While food addiction is not considered an official diagnosis, some people have a hard time controlling the amount of highly processed foods they consume. In research published in the journal Gut, scientists analyzed the microbiome bacteria of mice and humans with food addictions. They found that the bacteria in mice and humans with food addictions were different from their counterparts with a healthy food relationship. The food-addicted groups had lower levels of the beneficial Blautia bacteria and high levels of the detrimental Proteobacteria in their microbiomes. When the researchers increased the Blautia bacteria levels in the mice that had become compulsive eaters, the compulsive behavior stopped. While a correlation between the microbiome makeup and eating patterns has been identified, more research is needed to understand whether that relationship is a cause or a marker for compulsive eating.

Holistic Strategies to Ease Back-to-School Anxiety

Now that back-to-school season is here, many of us find ourselves dealing with heightened stress—both in our children and ourselves. New classes, new schools, new peers, unfamiliar environments, demanding workloads, and the overall uncertainty of it all can trigger significant anxiety. For many parents, this stress is absorbed personally, creating a ripple effect that leaves everyone feeling overwhelmed. But why do some people seem to handle it better than others? While it might appear to be just a personality trait, there's often more at play—particularly in how our bodies are functioning.

Several common issues tend to underlie anxiety, especially during times of transition. One key factor is hormone balance, particularly in relation to the adrenal glands. These glands are responsible for producing most of the body’s steroid hormones, which play crucial roles far beyond what we typically associate with muscle-building. These powerful hormones interact directly with our DNA, influencing gene expression and triggering systemic changes.

Take cortisol, for instance—a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that’s best known for its role in stress response. When we’re under stress, cortisol levels rise, which can exacerbate feelings of anxiety. For those experiencing chronic or intense stress, cortisol levels may remain elevated—even when there’s no immediate stressor. Add a stressful situation to this already heightened cortisol level, and anxiety can quickly spiral out of control.

Another critical factor often linked to anxiety is digestive health. While it may not seem directly related, there’s a reason we refer to a

“gut feeling.” Our digestive system, particularly the small intestine, produces about 70 percent of our body’s neurotransmitters— chemicals that significantly influence our thoughts, moods and emotions. Any digestive issues can disrupt this delicate balance, contributing to anxiety.

While all students face challenges during the back-to-school season, the way stress manifests can vary with age. Younger children may experience anxiety over new teachers, classrooms and making friends, while high schoolers might grapple with academic pressure, social dynamics and future plans. For college students, the transition can be even more intense, as they navigate a new level of independence.

The stress, irregular eating habits, and late nights typical of a college student’s lifestyle can exacerbate anxiety, making it more pronounced. Regardless of age, the impact of stress on a student’s well-being is significant and often requires a tailored approach to manage effectively.

It’s important to recognize that when kids are stressed, it often affects the whole family—especially parents. As caregivers, we naturally take on the emotions of our children, feeling their anxiety as if it were our own. This shared stress can add another layer of pressure, making it challenging to remain

calm and supportive. For parents, managing their own stress while helping their children navigate these challenges becomes a delicate balancing act. Understanding the root causes of stress and anxiety in both ourselves and our children is key to fostering a more peaceful and supportive environment during the back-to-school transition.

At our practice, we’re passionate about helping people overcome anxiety through a cause-based approach. By utilizing comprehensive blood tests and physical exams, we regularly identify the root causes of anxiety for so many of our patients. We then employ a holistic treatment plan, incorporating nutrition, supplements, Chinese medicine and various other modalities, from bodywork to emotional release techniques. This approach has enabled many of our clients to significantly reduce—and in many cases, eliminate—their anxiety.

Yes, I Finally Got Rid of Herpes!

From the desk of Dr. Howard Robins at The Healing Center in New York City

Imagine… You’ve got that first date with a special someone. You’ve got that interview for the new job you need so very much. You’re getting married today. You’re meeting that new client, the CEO of the biggest account you’ve ever had.

You wake up in the morning with a huge, red, ugly blister on your lip. It’s a herpes outbreak! It couldn’t have picked a worse time to appear. There is no way to cover it up. You can’t be more embarrassed. Do you cancel? What do you do?

The problem

It’s not complicated. You caught a virus—the herpes virus—which comes in two varieties: Herpes Type I and Herpes Type II. The CDC says over 50 million Americans have it out of 350 million. It appears that the numbers are really reversed. In truth, maybe 50 million don’t, as most people are not blood tested for it.

Stress, any kind of stress may bring on an attack, an outbreak, as your immune system weakens for the moment. While there are many other types of herpes viruses these are the most severe psycho-socially embarrassing ones. They’re ugly, painful and, at times, dangerous. Relationships have ended or never even started when it’s revealed that one you has herpes. While Type I is generally considered oral and Type II genital, it has been proven by testing that you can have either in both locations!

The truth about how you got it

Would you believe that grandma might have given it you? How about your best friend? How is that possible? Isn’t it only sexually transmitted? What you don’t know could get you infected.

In truth, while it often is sexually transmitted it can also be passed on by contact with silverware while dining or even sharing a water bottle at the gym. Unfortunately, it’s simply that easy. Grandma may have had a little brown or pink “dot” on her tongue one morning when she fed you your oatmeal. Tasting it,

she found it too hot, so she blew on it and tested it again. Finding it was now the right temperature, she fed it to you. Unfortunately, she just transferred the virus onto the spoon and now, to you. Have you ever shared food in a restaurant with a friend, a family member, or on a date with that special someone? Ever shared a soft drink with a friend or allowed your date to taste your cocktail? The same thing that could have happened with grandma could have happened then. Most will blame the last person they were intimate with, but unless you had a blood test shortly before being with them—proving you were clean—you may have already been infected.

What can you do to get rid of permanently? Please don’t believe the drug commercials on television that say it can only be suppressed. Their only interest is to keep you on expensive medication for the rest of your life. They either don’t know about the treatment I am going to share with you, or they choose to ignore and suppress its existence.

Intravenous Ozone Therapy uses ozone gas as a medicine effectively destroying these dreaded viruses completely. Over 45,000 physicians have used it safely in over 50 countries for over 70 years, while being suppressed in this country obviously for the financial gain of Big Pharma. In truth, herpes is a very hard virus to kill. The good news is that Ozone used as a medicine intravenously will penetrate its defenses and completely destroy it without the possibility of developing a mutated or resistant strain. It does this safely with virtually NO adverse reactions! Believe it or not, it is even possible to rid your body of it so completely with Ozone therapy that you will stop manufacturing antibodies for it, so that you will test negative for it, as if you never had it! Cured!

More information about this amazing, safe and effective treatment is available at OzoneWithoutBorders.ngo and OzoneDoctor.net, in addition to Dr. Robins’ live and archived radio show featured on the VoiceAmerica.com, Health and Wellness Channel, titled Functional Medicine with Dr. Robins. Chiropractic Care

A Beneficial Path to Alleviating Anxiety

Many people of all ages experience depression and/or anxiety, whether on an occasional, frequent or consistent basis. These symptoms may be transient, only occurring at a particular stage in life, or they may represent a specific condition such as a depressive or panic disorder.

Panic disorders are marked by episodes of intense anxiety and overwhelming fear, known as panic attacks. During a panic attack, individuals may experience symptoms such as a pounding or racing heart, breathing difficulties, dizziness, weakness, chills and nausea. They may also feel a loss of control and a sense of impending doom.

Chiropractic care has a distinct and specific role to play in the management of panic attacks. Spinal biomechanical dysfunction and spinal nerve irritation may be implicated in the causation of panic attacks, as such dysfunction and irritation can heighten physiological stress and contribute to triggering feelings of anxiety. In other words, if your body is already on high-alert status owing to internal biomechanical stress and neurophysiological irritation, then emotional and/or environmental triggers can more easily shift your adaptive responses into panic mode.

Regular chiropractic care helps prevent detrimental, cascading effects by detecting, analyzing and correcting sources of spinal biomechanical dysfunction and spinal nerve irritation. By reducing baseline levels of internal physiological stress and restoring improved function throughout the body, regular chiropractic care aids in mediating the response to anxiety-provoking situations.

It also helps alleviate muscular tension and pain, improving the functioning of the cardiorespiratory, gastrointestinal, immune and hormonal systems. Consistent chiropractic care supports higher levels of health and well-being while reducing the overall frequency and severity of panic attacks.

Engaging in healthy lifestyle choices, such as maintaining a nutritious diet and participating in regular vigorous exercise, enhances the benefits of chiropractic care in improving overall health. Consuming nutritious foods daily enables the body to function optimally by building strong cells and tissues while helping to eliminate toxins accumulated through metabolic processes. Routine high-intensity exercise, such as 30 minutes a day of walking, running, cycling, swimming or weight training, five days a week, further supports this process. These healthy habits work together to boost energy levels, promote restful sleep, and foster a positive mental attitude. Additionally, as the body and mind begin to work in harmony, unexpected benefits may emerge. Overall, combining healthy lifestyle activities with regular chiropractic care optimizes bodily function and reduces the impact of internal and external stressors that can contribute to anxiety.

Vibe Up

with Transformational Life Coach Jewana White

Jewana White, transformational coach, dynamic speaker and founder of U-Factor Wellness, has always felt guided by a deep inner voice—a gift that shaped her path from a young age. At just eight years old, this voice helped her escape from a kidnapper, solidifying her connection with spiritual guidance. Growing up with a mentally ill father, White relied on her intuition to navigate her childhood, a skill that later became her greatest asset.

Revive Your Energetic Wellness in Free Online Class

Join Jewana White, founder of U-Factor Wellness, on September 16 and 30 from 4 to 5 p.m., for a complimentary Zoom class focused on elevating one’s energy and restoring balance.

During this empowering session, attendees will uncover transformative techniques to clear emotional blockages and enhance their overall well-being.

“Don’t miss this opportunity to join me on a journey toward a more vibrant and fulfilled life,” invites White. “This class is designed to help you unlock your full potential. Together, we’ll turn your dreams into reality.”

A Beautiful Affirmation

As an adult, White spent 23 years working with Long Island Railroad (LIRR) mass transit, where she connected with people from all walks of life. “This experience deepened my empathy, honed my intuition, and helped build the resilience I needed to face life’s toughest challenges,” she says. When she endured the heartbreak of a 20-year marriage ending in divorce and financial devastation, her ex-husband’s words, “I knew what it took to make you happy; I just chose not to do it,” sparked a profound shift. “It was a gut punch, a huge wake-up call from God,” White recalls. Initially destabilized, she eventually realized, “It wasn’t happening to me; it was happening for me.” Embracing the Dalai Lama’s wisdom—pain is inevitable; suffering is optional—White learned to dance in the frequency of the rain, understanding that life’s storms are as essential as its sunshine.

I am a creation of the Universal forces of God, embodying beauty, love and abundance. With a heart full of gratitude, I create and embrace a life rich in grace, joy and infinite possibilities.

RTT combines hypnotherapy, psychotherapy and NLP techniques to reframe deep-seated beliefs that contribute to emotional distress.”

From these practices, White developed the CPR (connecting, processing and releasing) system, a method designed to help others clear emo tional blockages and restore balance in their lives. “Everyone has secret hidden internal trauma (SHIT) that unconsciously sabotages their lives,” she explains. “My main agenda is helping others ‘let that shit go!’”

Though she was raised with a religious background, White embarked on a new spiritual path. “My relationship with God led me to realize that the church and its teachings were not my path. I wanted to focus solely on love—how to feel it and how to release anything that wasn’t love,” she explains. This realization eventually led her to create U-Factor Wellness, empowering others to do the same.

Reflecting on her journey, White admits to having traversed some heavy territory in the past, but she proudly owns it now. “I’ve done a lot of shadow work, and it’s challenging. But that’s part of vibing up—being open to moving through the pain and darkness to reach the light on the other side.”

Her quest for true healing led her to explore alternative modalities such as reiki, acupuncture, massage therapy and Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT). “Reiki balances the body’s energy fields, promoting relaxation and emotional clarity,” she says. “Acupuncture addresses physical symptoms and releases emotional blockages. Massage therapy relieves physical tension and encourages the release of stored emotions.

White’s coaching system is personalized to each individual, and she views the process as a co-creative experience. “I always tell my clients that the universe has matched us up for a reason; there’s healing in it for both of us. And I love nothing more than helping others vibe up,” she says. “We VIBE up by realizing your vision, intention and beliefs, and executing them all. As Nikola Tesla said, to unlock the universe’s secrets, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.”

While one-on-one coaching lights her up, White is also passionate about women’s retreats and is excited to begin hosting them soon. “Retreats offer a safe, nurturing space where we can all dive into our hearts and love on each other and ourselves,” she shares.

Stopping the Trauma Cycle

Mind-Body Healing Strategies

Trauma can strike anyone at any time. Loss, heartbreak, abuse, violence, displacement, accidents, disasters, health problems—the list of possible traumas is endless. According to the National Council for Behavioral Health, 70 percent of adults have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lives, and more than a third of youth exposed to community violence experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Trauma is a factor in most behavioral health and substance-use disorders. While trauma may be part of our lives, it does not need to define who we are or how we enjoy our lives. Healing from trauma can take time, but it is within reach.

Health Effects

Left untreated, trauma or repeated trauma has a wide range of short- and long-term effects on physical and mental health. Trauma increases stress and keeps the fight-or-flight response on elevated alert, resulting in the release of chronically high amounts of cortisol into the body. Initial reactions may include exhaustion, numbness, sadness, anxiety and dissociation. Excessive cortisol increases the risk of serious health conditions such as heart disease, digestive problems, muscle tension, headaches, sleep issues, weight gain, irregular periods, anxiety, depression and cognitive challenges.

Cycle of Addiction

Trauma is a common precursor to addiction, because individuals often turn to substances as a coping mechanism for their emotional pain. The use of drugs or alcohol gives trauma sufferers a reprieve from their chronic stress by producing pleasure and reducing negative feelings, and may even slow their central nervous system. Untreated, trauma can lead to a vicious cycle where one condition feeds the other.

and antipsychotics can be effective in treating trauma symptoms, they may fall short in addressing the root cause. An integrative approach to trauma healing adds evidencebased therapies to tackle the underlying causes and promote long-term recovery.

Integrative Psychiatry

James Greenblatt, a board-certified functional and integrative psychiatrist and founder of Psychiatry Redefined, believes in a broader view of psychiatric care. “For example, if our patient is suffering from depression and we were to tell them they should exercise because it’s the best antidepressant we have, that could come off as incredibly insensitive, ruin our chances of gaining their trust and add to their feelings of helplessness and isolation. Alternatively, if we show them how to recover their motivation and energy, that is the way to begin the relationship.”

“Our bodies are different, and our genetics are different. How we react to stress and trauma are different too. I start with lab and genetic tests to see if there’s something I can optimize biologically. Then we supplement any nutritional deficiencies to restore their functionality and increase their energy. These tests also partially help inform the way we design the complementary healing modality plan. This is the piece that gets missed a lot,” says Greenblatt, adding that he tests depressed patients for a vitamin B12 deficiency, which may contribute to depression, anxiety and even psychosis.

Finding a Safe Place

Children are particularly susceptible to trauma, and an adverse childhood experience (ACE) can pose lifelong impacts. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 64 percent of adults say they have had at least one ACE, and 17 percent say they had four or more by age 18. ACEs can rob kids of the magic of childhood, disrupt their development and lead to maladaptive behaviors in adulthood.

Aimie Apigian, a double board-certified physician in preventative and addiction medicine and founder of Trauma Healing Accelerated, started her work with attachment and

trauma by working with adoptive families to help their children with attachment insecurity. She explains that childhood traumatic experiences can result in “underlying mistrust—literally wiring a child’s nervous system, brain and body for survival—and overwhelm connection, security and safety.”

Somatic therapy is one modality that Apigian integrates to assist individuals on their trauma-healing journey, helping them connect with their bodies, learn to understand

its messages and resolve stored trauma. Apigian explains that just 10 minutes of sequential somatic exercises over 21 days can restore a sense of safety. “For each person, the specific improvement or the degree of improvement will be different, but there will be an improvement as soon as we shift our biology into one of safety rather than of danger.”

By following an essential sequence to safely address stored trauma through somatic

exercises, Apigian says people “experience 30 percent less depression, 30 percent less anxiety, 30 percent fewer digestive issues, 30 percent improvement in energy and a 60 percent increase in their feelings of safety. The essential sequence has to start with creating a felt sense of safety, then a sense of support and then opening up while pacing our process. It is such a powerful way to empower them for their lifetime.”

Reaching Our Inner Child

Inner-child work can help develop a dialogue to reach the place where we hold past emotions, memories, beliefs, hopes and dreams. “I tell people when they’re starting this journey, if they put their hands on their belly above and below their bellybutton and just let the hands be there, that will calm down an aspect of us so that it begins to feel safe. It’s called the basic self,” says Dr. Lin Morel, a trauma management specialist and founder of Beyond Words Group. “It’s an aspect of our consciousness that is roughly 5 years old, if you were to give it

an age. So it gets very fearful, and if it’s not loved, it will act out.”

According to Morel, embracing the basic self can help people out of some of the darkest corners of trauma. No stranger to childhood and adult trauma herself, she empowers her patients with the W.I.N. protocol (willingness, intention, neutrality), which offers them a fresh approach to handling challenges while developing their intuition and regulating emotions as a neutral observer.

Mindful Self-Regulation

There is growing evidence that mindfulnessbased practices such as meditation and yoga aid in shifting focus from the negative to the positive aspects of experiences. These techniques calm the nervous system and empower individuals to take control of their narratives and become more resilient.

A 2017 review of trials involving 650 trauma sufferers that underwent mindfulness-

based stress reduction, yoga and mantra repetition was published in Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy. The researchers concluded that meditation was an effective treatment for PTSD and depression symptoms as compared to the control groups.

A 2022 systematic review of 149 records and 11 peer-reviewed articles published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that those that practiced yoga had an increased sense of self-compassion, felt more centered, developed coping skills, had a better mind-body relationship and improved their relationships with others. Participants also experienced a feeling of safety in yoga classes that included others recovering from trauma.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a mind-body practice that uses a trance-like state of deep relaxation to treat psychological and emotional disorders. Guided imagery, progressive relaxation and suggestion therapy are used to explore thoughts, feelings and memories that may be hidden from the conscious mind. Selfhypnosis techniques are also taught for ongoing support, empowering individuals to continue their healing outside of therapy sessions. A 2016 meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis concluded that hypnosis is effective in alleviating PTSD symptoms.

“A miracle, simply, is a shift in the mind. Once you find the root cause of the problem in the mind and bring that to consciousness, we’re shifting from ego to true self, from fear to love, from illusion to truth,” says Matthew Brownstein, executive director of the Institute of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy. “Through hypnotherapy, that shift is actually remarkably easy. You can shift as quickly as I can snap my fingers. So, basically, when you change your mind, everything changes. When a decision is made, it stays in place until you choose again.”

Carrie Gauthier is a writer in the healing arts with interests in clinical and transpersonal hypnotherapy.

A Pilgrimage to Wholeness

One of the most beautiful aspects of youth is envisioning the future with undaunted optimism, but even the most strategic plan for life can go off the rails. Whether we carry the weight of unprocessed trauma and never quite reach our potential or zoom into the fast lane of success only to be brought down by sudden change, pain is part of every person’s story. The quest for healing and finding our whole self beneath the rubble becomes a new objective that can be the most arduous but the most significant. We might accomplish monumental feats, transforming our trauma or going into physical remission from disease. We might even feel a calling to guide others along the path we have come to know so well, but it is important to remember that the deep healing process is a spiral. Our linear brains may be startled when our most gut-wrenching, seemingly resolved issues loop back around, and we are plunged even deeper into the crucible. During these times, it is easy to forget that we are multidimensional beings. A physical injury or illness involves much more than flesh or organ systems, and agonies of the spirit can greatly impact the physical body.

We heal layer by layer—sometimes even layers within layers—and despite our full commitment and steady growth, the task of peeling the onion is never quite finished. One of our greatest challenges is overcoming the illusion that we are failing miserably when we fall out of resonance; evolution is not a course that we can flunk. With each descent, our pain can provide an opportunity to lessen the chasm between mind and body and to acknowledge parts of our being that might need tending. For as long as we inhabit a human vehicle, we will always be in the process of healing something, and that is okay. We can rest assured that our process, like all spirals, will lead us safely back outward to continue our journey.

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

on the Journey Within

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is a globally renowned spiritual leader and humanitarian, recognized for his profound contributions to personal and societal transformation. Born in 1956 in Tamil Nadu, India, he founded The Art of Living, an educational and humanitarian nonprofit organization, in 1981. It has since expanded to 180 countries, impacting millions of lives through stress relief and self-development programs. Central to his teachings is the Sudarshan Kriya, a powerful breathing technique designed to eliminate stress and promote mental clarity.

Gurudev’s influence extends beyond spiritual teachings. He has been instrumental in peace-building efforts in conflict zones such

as Iraq, Colombia and Sri Lanka, advocating for non-violence and dialogue. His leadership in trauma relief has brought comfort to disaster-stricken areas, and his initiatives in education, environmental sustainability and social service have empowered countless communities worldwide.

A recipient of numerous awards, including the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, Gurudev is celebrated for his vision of a violence-free, stress-free society. His work emphasizes universal human values, fostering a sense of global responsibility and unity. He has authored several books, offering insights into spirituality, relationships and leadership, further spreading his message of peace and well-being.

Photo courtesy Art of Living Foundation

Gurudev makes two trips to The Art of Living Retreat Center in Boone, North Carolina, each year. One is during the summer, and Natural Awakenings was invited to interview the spiritual leader when he was there in July. Our questions were drawn from our reading of his most recent book, Notes for the Journey Within

You’ve written: “The first step on the spiritual path is to stop blaming yourself.” Why is that? And why is it a prerequisite to whatever the second step is?

You see, the spiritual journey is going towards yourself, realizing who you are. That is the spiritual journey. It’s not going out; it’s going within you. When you blame yourself, you will not go to yourself; you will be repelled from yourself. You will only go to something that you praise, something you’re attracted to. You never go towards something to which you’re adverse. You try to run away from that. So, if you’re blaming yourself, you can never go within. You can never go close to yourself.

What might be the first thing a person does to stop blaming themselves?

To stop blaming, one should see life from a bigger, wide-angle lens. I would say see life from a bigger context. You know, a mistake happens through unawareness and through ignorance. Say you don’t know how to make an apple pie; you tried and it didn’t turn out right. So, out of ignorance, you did it. Right? So, one is ignorance. Second is [being] unaware. You put apple pie to bake, and then you forgot. Later on, it burned. So, lack of awareness or ignorance are the two causes of all of our mistakes in life. We don’t know the whole picture. Our understanding is very limited. We are bound to make wrong judgments and make mistakes. [But] with every wrong thing you did, you have learned something, yes? You learn by it. You say no, this is wrong; you don’t want to do it again. If you do it, it’s out of habit, compulsion without awareness. So, one needs to forgive oneself for past things. See, all your mistakes have happened through unawareness and through ignorance; you have to move away from that. Then, you will stop blaming yourself.

"Let us change all that is corrupt and useless in your structures, all that prevents the manifestation of your divinity."

- Maitreya, the World Teacher

A passage in your book says it takes courage to say “I am,” and you write, “All your spiritual doings are to help you become silent.” Someone taking early steps in their spiritual path might find that statement surprising. Please explain what becoming more silent has to do with becoming more spiritually evolved.

Silence is mother of all inventions. And silence is also the way to go to one’s source of energy. That’s why it’s important [that] the mind becomes quiet.

In your book, you write about the five steps in meditation, and you list them as relaxation, energy, creativity, enthusiasm and joy. You write that joy is indescribable, that “you’re one with the whole of universe.” My guess is that in the U.S., the vast majority of people practicing meditation are doing so for stress relief and relaxation. So, would you say there are different meditation practices that can help you attain more energy and creativity? Or is it that one does the same meditation practice—just longer at each sitting and for a longer period— meaning months, years, and so forth?

In fact, a little bit of both. As you progress, first, you do stress release, and then you learn more techniques. Advanced programs help you go deeper. Sustained practice also helps.

When people have more energy all of a sudden, are they surprised about it?

Oh, yeah. The wow factor is always there in the spiritual path. Miracles in life are a normal thing. Here at the Art of Living, we say we depend on miracles. It’s normal. If it doesn’t happen, then one is surprised.

In your book, you write, “There are two steps to enlightenment. From being somebody to being nobody is the first step. And then the second step is from being nobody to being everybody.” People just starting on their spiritual paths might find this profound but not easy to understand. Would you explain what you

mean by these “two steps”?

You know, higher wisdom does not require much explanation. You explain too much; then you get more confusion. It is experiential. You know you’re somebody. Okay. Now, the first step is you try to get out of that somebodyness and become a nobody. Realize you were a nobody before you became somebody.

You also write, “Peace is your nature, yet you remain restless. Freedom is your nature, yet you remain in bondage. Happiness is your nature, yet you become miserable for some reason or another. Contentment is your nature, yet you’ve continued to reel in desires. And benevolence is your nature, yet you do not reach out.” One could say that people see restlessness, bondage, misery, and the rest when they look at humanity. And one might conclude that it’s just as likely that those things are our nature. How are you sure that peace, freedom, happiness, contentment and benevolence are truly our nature?

That follows whenever one realizes oneself; this is what comes out of it. When you realize who you really are, and you realize yourself, self-realization brings this truth in life.

So we must go down the path, and then we will understand that it’s the truth?

Yeah. This is what you will get to know. That is the reality. Like, you have a coconut. It’s all husk outside. Only when you peel it, when you remove the husk of the coconut, do you find the kernel inside. The kernel is the real thing. You go for the kernel, right? You don’t hold on to the husk. So that’s what it means.

I think in mainstream America, “passion” is seen in a positive light, whereas “dispassion” can be seen negatively. In your book, you write, “Even though dispassion and enthusiasm appear to be opposite, they’re actually complimentary. When they coexist, there’s perennial enthusiasm and profound dispassion.” So, how do you define dispassion? And how

can dispassion and enthusiasm be complimentary and not opposites?

See, breathing in is passion. Your in breath is passion; your out breath is dispassion. If you like passion, you can’t have a good night’s sleep. See, when you want to go to bed, when you want to sleep, you let go of all that has happened in the day; you let go of everything around you. Only then can you go into deep sleep, right? That letting go is dispassion. Passion is holding on. Correct? Letting go is something very common in America. It’s considered very positive: ‘Oh, you let it go.’ You know, if you’re not—if you’re holding on to all the past things and every little thing and all the grudges—then you have no dispassion. Dispassion helps you let go of the past. It helps you to let go of anxiety about the future. It helps you to let go of everything and relax. Relaxation can never happen if one doesn’t know how to let go. And letting go is what I call dispassion.

In that case, how would you define passion?

Passion is what motivates you to do anything in life. Passion connects you with everything. Passion brings enthusiasm in life. If you don’t have passion, you will get into depression. Depression is not dispassion. You have to make that distinction. You know, people who have no passion in life get depressed, and depressed people are not detached. So, there is a sea of difference between depression and dispassion. Dispassion brings a lot of joy. Depression is immersing in sadness; it can become suicidal. Passion can bring a sort of distorted passion, which leads you to depression. So passion needs to be balanced with dispassion. If you have only passion, you will become a nervous wreck. You will become a patient of insomnia, and you will get depressed because you have so much passion about things that didn’t happen. That leads to depression. But if it is balanced with dispassion… It’s like having a shoe. When you want to go out, you put on a shoe. When you come back home, you remove the shoe. You don’t go to bed or shower with shoes on. So, the ability to detach oneself from unsown passion makes you stronger.

Know that You are Loved

So many of you feel as though you are unloved, when you know this is not the case. You know you are loved on Earth as in Heaven. You are surrounded by LOVE with each step you take—it would not be possible for you to experience not being loved. You would die.

The best frame of mind that you can have is like a child; accepting that you are the one that is last to know. Your higher selves have it handled and are taking care of you. There are aspects of you that are returning to you from some dramatic experiences being assimilated by you for healing so they can ascend out ahead of you. This is accomplished by us being able to raise our vibration up through the dimensional spaces to gather those aspects of ourselves that were fragmented and lost at the time of the Fall. We are assimilating those memories and experiences for healing—not only of us in our current incarnation, but of those versions of us in other incarnated experiences as well.

Sometimes the experience of healing and assimilation can take time before those healed aspects of us can move on in higher ascension. As they go higher, you go higher, and higher, and higher… each time, achieving an incremental lift. You may experience or see flashes of these experiences in the form of memories that may play out in the dream state. You may have a sense of knowing, or a feeling or emotion, that you may not be able to identify where it’s come from. You may say to yourself, “I don’t know what this is, and I don’t feel like it’s mine.” It’s not! You can put it aside and acknowledge that there is an aspect of your greater soul lineage that is hurting, and like a child, you can just offer love until that aspect is healed and able to move on.

When these aspects of us are being assimilated, we are often assimilating them at the greatest moments of our past traumas. By reclaiming ourselves, we are able to save and heal those aspects and enable them to be redeemed and returned to God Source. This is the superhero that you are!

We don’t need to understand all the inner workings that our linear minds may not have a frame of reference for. If you try to force what you are feeling into the constraints of a linear construct, you will strangle the energy as it comes in, crushing it and building up resistance to the next steps on your path, ultimately locking yourself into a lower dimensional space. Allow and let it move through.

The universe is moving through you.

The emotional body adjusts as you walk the path between two worlds. It will all even out, and you will “get it.”

You are experiencing a new state of being; no need to overthink it, analyze it or resist it. Trust and embrace it. Don’t look back because we are not going in that direction. Let go of those things, places and people you are outgrowing, and make space for the new. Joy will return, and you will find it in places you never even noticed before, but not in the old ways, or places of being.
