Welcome to March! I find it curious that we all make resolutions at the beginning of every year to make better food choices, but why not extend it a little longer? This month’s edition has great articles showcasing food and cheering on more plant-based options. Back in the stone age when I was growing up, I was raised on meat and potatoes. That’s all we knew and were taught by our parents and culture, so it made up the bulk of my diet.

Everything changed once I was on my own and had a vegetarian roommate. Seeing what she ate and how she looked was the push I needed. On a visit home, I eagerly told my mother of my newfound dietary change. Luckily for me, she ran with it. She even bought me my first vegetarian cookbook, which I still lovingly use.

Back in those days, it was easier to grab a bag of chips and boil some pasta than it was to rinse and chop produce for salad. However, I couldn’t deny that the more veggies I ate, the better I felt. I didn’t have the time or the patience—until I liked how it made me feel. And once I realized how much better I felt eating a more wholesome, nutritious diet, I was determined to stay on the path.

It takes effort to make a change, but with the latest news in our Food Trends for 2024 article, you can see that it’s more achievable. There’s no need to be so restrictive with your diet because—as we all know—once you stop, you’ll return to the way you ate before. It’s time to say goodbye to yo-yo dieting and hello to clean eating filled with sustainable, nourishing ingredients that fuel the body. Viewing our healthier eating habits as more of a lifestyle change than a diet is how to win the challenge.

Being the generation that’s writing the script for “how” we age puts us in the driver’s seat. Visit a farmer’s market, introduce a friend to a world of health and color, and find a nutritious food delivery service that removes the guesswork and makes it easy to eat a healthy meal. There are ways to get there: seize the day and your greens!

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Association for Cancer Research, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. It is estimated that more than 150,000 people in the U.S. received a colon or rectal cancer diagnosis in 2023.

Silent Reflux

On a recent trip to Costco, I noticed that the first row of over-the-counter medications near checkout was filled with PPIs (proton pump inhibitors). These commonly used medications target heartburn and acid reflux symptoms, one of the most common health problems around. Millions of people on a regular basis experience the acidic, burning pain in their stomach, chest or throat area which causes them to reach for PPIs.

At the same time, while millions of people have obvious symptoms of GERD (gastrointestinal reflux disease), millions more do not have direct or noticeable symptoms. They suffer from what is referred to as silent reflux which causes indirect symptoms. What are these indirect symptoms and how can we alleviate this extremely important health issue?

While the obvious symptoms and damage are easily understood, the secondary symptoms are even more insidious. Chronic digestive problems can affect the entire body through a process known as “leaky gut syndrome.” In my opinion, leaky gut is not a diagnosis, but rather a mechanism to help explain how a chronic digestive issue can cause chronic systemic inflammation.

Leaky gut syndrome inflammation is being produced every day, every time we eat—even if the food we’re eating is healthy. How can that be? When the digestive process is not functioning optimally, our food is not broken down to the small particle sizes required. This undigested food material can cross the gut barrier and pass into the bloodstream becoming foreign matter to the body. Our body then launches an immune response to this poorly digested food. Since we eat multiple times a day, our body can remain in a chronic inflammatory state.

While not as obvious at first, there are many symptoms of silent reflux, including a chronic cough; a lump in the throat sensation; a hoarse or raspy voice; nasal congestion; postnasal drip; chronic sinus infections; neck, shoulder and upper back pain; headaches; allergies and more. But why do we even get reflux, silent or not? Reflux is one of many symptoms of weakness and damage to the upper digestive tract. Bloating, indigestion and distention are others. These upper digestive tract symptoms can be caused by any upper digestive tract organ and chronic or severe stress. So, while reflux symptoms appear in the stomach and esophagus, the cause can often originate elsewhere.

For many, the problem is chronic gallbladder issues, such as biliary stasis which is a thickening of the bile from a dish soap consistency into a sludge or sand consistency. This sludge, one of the most common reasons for GERD, then becomes quite inflammatory and an irritant to the stomach lining. Interestingly, a common symptom of biliary stasis is an aversion to meat. Many of my vegan and vegetarian patients with this condition suddenly crave meat after repairing the issue. Dysfunction of the small intestines, pancreas, stomach, gallbladder, and even the diaphragm itself can also be a cause of reflux. Stress can be the cause of these functional issues as well.

To fix the problem, we must first identify the actual cause. Thankfully, there are easy, noninvasive ways to accomplish this—including performing a Functional Digestive Test. This test includes palpating digestive organs throughout the abdomen before and after eating to discover—in real time—how inflamed an organ is by the simple task of digesting food. If

an organ is functionally struggling, it will become more inflamed, and the area will tighten up after digesting the plant-based drink used for the test. This process allows patients to realize exactly where their digestive woes originate.

Once we have that information, the patient is given several plant-based enzyme and herb combinations to directly target and aid in the healing of those specific functional issues. The results are often fast. When the correct treatment is applied, the body heals quickly. Many people notice that their issues dramatically improve within just a few weeks. For some, changes happen in mere days. These improvements generally go far beyond the digestive tract. Most people report increases in energy, weight, focus, memory, joint and muscle pain, sleep, stress and more. In fact, any of these issues could be considered an indirect symptom of GERD or silent reflux.

A Reason for Hope in Today’s Climate of Fear

As the dark clouds of war gather and obscure the sunlit sky of peace, the response of humanity is twofold: mute acceptance and compliance with the will of the warmongers, or active and spirited resistance to their plans and ploys. Today, we see both reactions in equal measure. Half the world is caught up in the glamour of ‘a war against terrorism’ (without recognizing the underlying cause) and in terrorism itself. The other half deplores both terrorism and the lack of understanding of its genesis. They know that changes, on a major scale, alone hold the key to ending this atrocious evil, and call to the leaders of nations to recognize and address the inequalities which so unfairly divide the world.

This latter group must grow and increase their resistance to the plans of those, now in power, who so threaten the stability of the world. They must find each other and work together, knowing that they work and speak for the vast but silent majority who share their longing for peace and manifested justice.

Peace will only come when justice reigns, when sharing has opened men’s hearts and awakened them to trust. Thus men must work and speak loudly for justice and sharing which alone will bring an end to men’s suffering, to terrorism and war. We, your Elder Brothers, are ready to do Our part. We will potentize all actions taken on behalf of the Common Good. We await the opportunity to manifest Our strength; to help to right the wrongs of the past; to show men the uselessness of war. We pledge our support of all who call for an end to war, for the restoration of sanity and balance in the affairs of men, for the creation of justice and freedom for all.

Help Us to help you. Help Us to do Our part. We long to act, as always, in the interest of the Common Good, which, in Our understanding, is the best interests of all men. Thus it is that We advocate sharing; thus do We advise justice; thus do We see freedom and peace as the culmination of sharing and justice.

Let us work together for the rescue of this world. Let us abandon differences in the interests of the race. Let sanity triumph and bring men to see their mutual need for peace, and the restoration of an ailing world.

Many await the future in dread, fearful that man has lost his way, that it is now too late to find the path to peace. We counsel otherwise. We know that the path to peace is simply found, needing only the creation of justice and trust. We know that sharing alone will engender that trust, and bring men to abandon both terrorism and war. Thus will it be, and thus will men respond to Maitreya’s message of Brotherhood and Justice, free at last from the glamours of fear and mistrust, ready to create the future in deed and in joy.

Flowers in the Field

You have been dying over the winter months, bleeding out redundant energies. Your physical, emotional and mental bodies have been purging old habits and behaviors, venting memories and painful attachments. In some way, you have been severing the shadow that has stalked you throughout the years of your experiences here on the Earth plane.

Shadows can only be cast where there is a lack of light. The objects of your desires are standing between you and the Light; they are the ones casting the shadows. Do you see? Let them go!

Yes, this may feel like a loss, a period of mourning may be required, but only as an acknowledgment of the passing of something that has served you well. Be not saddened or alarmed by the shedding of these traits and characteristics. The old you is laying down like a red carpet for the emerging you to walk on as you cross the threshold of a new beginning, filled with more vibrant forms of expression just waiting to be captured in music, poetry and art; like a painting on a fresh white canvas in colors drawn from a pallet of richer hues and even stronger vibrations, imagining the sunflowers or the lilacs or the dancing daffodils.

Spring is an equinox of opportunity and creativity; birth and rebirth. You are rising up like the flowers in the field, sparkling with the mist of the early morning dew, fresh and tender and brimming with hope and faith. Your roots are deep in the soil and your stalks grow straight and strong, the many aspects of your self in unison are like the petals of a flower with its face turned to the sun.

Though, it will not serve you to stand rigid and immutable against the forces of nature, be resplendent in the birth of this new morn. Do not let the winds of change buffer you into surrender and make you to lay down in the field and be trampled underfoot, but stay in the flow of the Divine, swaying gently with the breeze and do not break.

Look around you to the field, you are not alone, see how the seeds have taken in the richness of this new holy ground. See the bright and shimmering faces of the perfect blooms that surround you. Gather in the nutrients from the earth that you sprang from, feel the droplets of God’s Grace on your face and be fed by the beams of the central sun, the Source of all life.

Dance in the sunlight, dance in the moonbeams, dance in the cosmic rays of transcendence. You are all of creation unified as ONE through the field of connectivity to all life, everywhere. Here and in the stars. So dance, and celebrate as only the flowers of the field can do.

Toxins and Colorectal Cancer

An article published by The Institute for Functional Medicine evaluated the relationship between environmental toxins and colorectal cancer (CRC), the second leading cause of cancerrelated deaths worldwide. Studies suggest a connection between CRC and exposure to certain pollutants, including some pesticides that are legally used in the U.S., asbestos, industrial pollutants and particulates in air pollution. Personal care items containing endocrine-disrupting chemicals such as phthalate and triclocarban were also found to be associated with CRC.

To reduce the risk of developing CRC, functional medicine practitioners recommend supporting the body’s detoxification and elimination processes while limiting exposure to these toxins. Healthy Plant-Based Diets Reduce Diabetes Risk

In 2021, diabetes affected 6.1 percent of the global population, and that percentage is expected to increase to more than 10 percent by 2050. According to a study in the journal Diabetes & Metabolism, the consumption of a healthy plant-based diet can reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 24 percent as compared to those following an unhealthy plant-based diet. These results also applied to those that were genetically predisposed to develop diabetes or had other risk factors such as age, lack of physical activity and obesity.

The study defined a healthy plant-based diet as one that eliminates animal fats and is low in sugar, sugary drinks, refined grains and starches like potatoes. The research included more than 113,000 British participants that were observed for 12 years. In addition to a lower body mass index and waist size, the researchers noted that normal levels of triglycerides, blood sugar, inflammation and the insulin-like growth factor 1 were also associated with a lower risk of diabetes, and they surmised that a healthy plant-based diet reduced diabetes risk by improving liver and kidney function.

Study Shows Long COVID Patients Benefit from Acupuncture

Acupuncture, a form of integrative medicine, can ease pain and help with stress management. It can also help if you are dealing with long COVID!

According to a recent pilot study by the Middlesex Health Burris Center for Integrative Medicine in Connecticut, acupuncture can help when patients experience a loss of taste, a loss of smell and even brain fog—all symptoms of long COVID.

The pilot study included 20 adult patients who experienced long COVID symptoms, but did not have any other medical conditions. Each patient received two acupuncture treatments a week for three weeks. At three points in time, they were asked to complete a questionnaire, assess their ability to taste through a taste test strip, and assess their ability to smell through a “scratch and sniff” test.

Ultimately, the research found significant improvement in brain

fog, smell and taste. In fact, both smell and taste improved after just three acupuncture treatments!

The research was published by The Journal of Alternative, Complementary & Integrative Medicine through Herald Scholarly Open Access. Authors included acupuncturist Amy Calandruccio; Deborah Pantalena, a registered nurse who serves as a clinical research nurse; Elizabeth Molle, a nurse scientist and Magnet Program director; Justin Drew, vice president of ambulatory and clinical services; and Lynn Jansky, a registered nurse who serves as professional practice and development program manager. What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is when very thin needles are inserted into your skin at strategic points on your body. The needles may sometimes be gently moved or twirled after insertion, and heat or mild electrical pulses may be applied. They usually stay in place for 15 to 25 minutes while you lie still and relax. Commonly used to treat pain, its role in medicine has expanded over time—now even more so with this latest finding regarding long COVID.

“Although acupuncture dates back thousands of years, recent research has revealed the neurological effects within the brain, and this supports the potential effectiveness of acupuncture for treating the symptoms associated with long COVID,” says Calandruccio.

At Middlesex Health, acupuncture is offered through its Burris Center for Integrative Medicine by Calandruccio, who is a boardcertified acupuncturist. Any needles used are properly sterilized and are single use, making the risks associated with this treatment very low. Common side effects could include soreness or minor bleeding or bruising where the needles are inserted.

Acupuncture is not a substitute for normal medical treatment. Instead, it works alongside it, treating the whole person—body, mind and spirit.

On a recent 60 Minutes news segment on probiotics, Dr. Patricia Hibberd, an infectious disease specialist and a professor of medicine at Boston University, was asked, “Is there convincing evidence that commercially available probiotics have been found to be beneficial for reducing diarrhea from antibiotics, treating irritable bowel syndrome, or decreasing allergies?”

Her answer was, “no!” She went on to say, “The whole idea that maybe throwing in good bacteria that we would take by mouth that hopefully would land in the right places in the GI tract and work with the immune system, we just don't know how to do any of that.”

“But it says they were alive at the time of manufacturing on the label,” you think. Yes, they are supposedly in “suspended animation,” but most are dead and those that aren’t dead won’t come back to life even if they survive the stomach.

This is what was found and explains the comments and results of the researchers.

Dr. Jeff Gordon of 60 Minutes said, “Despite disagreement about how or whether today’s probiotics work, every scientist we spoke with was hopeful about the possibility of improving health by manipulating the microbiome.”

Most people, at some point in their life, experience joint pain as a result of an acute injury such as an ankle sprain, knee sprain, or rotator cuff tear. Joint pain may also accompany varying types of joint inflammation, including osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease), rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and joint inflammation secondary to lupus erythematosus and irritable bowel syndrome. Of the numerous causes of joint inflammation, osteoarthritis is by far the most common, frequently affecting the lower back, neck, hips, knees, shoulders and wrists. Many factors are associated with the development of osteoarthritis, including overuse, too little use, faulty biomechanics, and overall lack of exercise. Joint pain related to osteoarthritis may be improved by engaging in a comprehensive program of restoring more efficient biomechanics, healthy nutrition, and targeted exercise.

The Role of Chiropractic Care in Reducing Joint Pain

Regular chiropractic care plays a key role in the effective management of joint pain. In contrast, for most people, diets containing at least five servings of fresh fruits and vegetables daily help prevent the development of joint inflammation and help reduce inflammatory processes and thus ameliorate a primary cause of joint pain.

How Exercise Relieves Joint Paint

Exercise helps to improve joint range of motion, strengthen supporting muscle groups, and increase the resiliency and flexibility of local soft tissues such as tendons and ligaments. Optimally, exercise is done five days a week for at least 30 minutes each day. Beneficial forms of exercise include walking, swimming, bicycling, yoga and strength training. For those that haven’t exercised in some time, it’s important to start slowly while gently building capacity and stamina.

brands that have carbon buy-back programs or help sequester nitrogen in their manufacturing,” says Largeman-Roth. “While we’ve seen an influx of meat alternatives in the past, there’s starting to be a pushback against the ones with long ingredient lists that are highly processed. Rubi protein made from lemna, or duckweed [a free-floating, aquatic plant], is gaining popularity as a plant-based protein alternative. It contains nine essential amino acids and uses 10 times less water to grow than soybeans and 100 times less water than beef. And, people are turning to the root system of mushrooms, instead of the caps, as a higher protein source. Their versatility makes them ideal for nuggets, jerky and other substantial snacks.”

Consumers are looking for foods that can help regulate blood sugar, especially as more of the population is concerned about prediabetes. “People are continuing to choose nuts, beans and other high-protein boosts to refuel after a workout or in-between meals,” Largeman-Roth points out. “Products such as Good Measure bars, made of almonds, peanuts and pumpkin seeds, are emerging as nutrient-rich and satisfying snacks. Consumers also realize how important fiber is for gut optimization, skin quality and mental health. Perhaps most top-of-mind in a post-pandemic world, it’s vital for immune health, as well. Overall, people of all ages want products that make them feel better and fit into their lifestyle. A lot of boxes have to be checked for people to try a new product, and food manufacturers are stepping up.”

Perhaps taking a cue from the younger generation, members of Generation X—Americans born between 1965 and 1980—are pioneering a new approach to healthy aging to help them thrive in their diverse lifestyles. According to the global market research company Mintel, aging concerns that were once considered taboo, such as menopause, are now being openly discussed.

“The new focus for our aging society will be an extended healthspan—the period of life spent in good health,” says Mintel Principal Analyst Jolene Ng. “This is an important shift, as population aging is a defining global trend of our time. By 2030, one in six people in the world will be aged 60 years and older, according to the World Health Organization. Brands need to consider the various nutritional, physical and mental health needs for middle-aged and older adults. Opportunities to improve healthspan include maintaining brain function with age and functional health solutions for common problems like disrupted sleep.”

Increasingly, Gen Xers aged 44 to 58 prioritize sleep as a tool for improving overall physical and emotional health. “Research has shown that total sleep time, sleep efficiency and deep sleep decrease with age,” says Ng. “Brands are focusing on innovating products with nutrients such as fiber or botanicals like lavender that can improve sleep quality. Products such as Bardo’s Calm snacks, which contain lemon balm and thyme, are emerging as a snack option for Gen Xers who are interested in trying food that supports relaxation.”

Many consumers are part of the “sandwich generation”, a term used to describe people in their 30s or 40s that are raising children while also caring for aging parents. Ng notes that brands are adjusting product lineups and marketing campaigns to address the specific requirements of these families. She expects to see more services like Magic Kitchen, which, she explains, is “a meal kit service that offers a range of healthy, dietitian-designed meals for families with different health needs, including seniors. Their objective is to bring families together during dinnertime, while respecting the specific dietary needs of individuals within the family unit. Brands also can help ease the stress and strain on these compound caregivers by offering convenience products and helpful tools for themselves and the loved ones they care for.”

Historically, food and beverages have been a source of great pleasure and social interaction, and Mintel Food & Drink Director David Faulkner envisions this as a continuing trend. “Just as we saw during COVID-19, food and drink will be the go-to source of comfort for consumers, delivering precious moments of joy,” he says. “It will be all the more relevant during the worsening climate crisis for food and drink companies to position pleasurable products as necessities, not as guilty self-indulgences.”

Seven Herbs to Grow, Eat and Heal

Growing herbs at home has myriad benefits, enhancing health, boosting flavor and saving money while supporting local ecosystems. Home growing not only provides fresh herbs for cooking needs, but also offers access to easy and affordable natural remedies that can soothe common ailments.

“There is nothing like having your own fresh herbs in home-cooked meals. You can also dry and prep your own herbs for winter. Herbs retain more fragrance and vibrant color when you dry and process your own,” says Nadine Clopton, an herbalist who serves as regenerative education program manager for Rodale Institute.

Clopton likes to grow medicinal herbs like holy basil, as well as culinary herbs like rosemary, sage, thyme, oregano and basil, which serve as both nutrition and medicine. “They have minerals, vitamins and antioxidants, and are deeply supportive of different systems in the

body,” says Clopton, who maintains a small deck herb garden in her Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, apartment.

A home herb garden boasts multiple environmental benefits, reducing our carbon footprint by eliminating the miles most herbs travel to reach the local grocery store, and eliminating pesticide use, if grown organically. Herbs are also great for attracting pollinators like bees, birds and butterflies to support a balanced and healthy ecosystem.

Great Herbs to Grow, Eat and Heal

“Rosemary is a multifaceted herb high in calcium,” says Linda Conroy, an herbalist, farmer and herb educator in Albion, Wisconsin. She uses it in topical lotions for pain relief, makes rosemary-infused salt for a flavor-booster and incorporates this pungent herb into her homemade feta cheese. Rosemary has been shown to enhance cognition and memory. It is also a natural mosquito repellant, making it a great addition to summer patios.

Sage is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and as a natural treatment for sore throats and coughs. “This easy-togrow perennial also helps attract pollinators,” says Conroy.

Dandelion is an excellent detoxifier that can help cleanse the liver and promote healthy digestion. “Every part of the dandelion is edible; it’s really a powerful, supportive herb. There are so many herbs like dandelion that grow wild around us, asking for our awareness and acknowledgment,” Clopton remarks.

Thyme has powerful antimicrobial properties that can help fend off bacterial infections. “It’s also anti-spasmodic and a natural expectorant, making it an excellent addition to cough remedies, which can save money compared to over-the-counter treatments,” Conroy advises.

Lemon balm is a natural stress reducer that can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. “I love growing lemon balm and holy basil together,” says Clopton. “They act like a natural mosquito repellent, in addition to all their medicinal and culinary benefits.”

Chamomile is an essential herb for relaxation and digestion. Regular consumption of chamomile tea can help reduce anxiety and promote restful sleep. Conroy also uses this herb for topical applications like lotions, body washes, foot baths and even eyewashes to soothe sore, irritated eyes.

Garlic has antibacterial and antiviral properties that can help fight infections. The bulb is also known to reduce blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels. “Garlic, chives and other plants in the allium family are all important immune-system boosters,” says Conroy.

Getting Started

For first-time growers, an herb garden may sound intimidating, but with patience and care, it can flourish even in small, indoor spaces. Conroy recommends trying chives, as they are easy to sprout and thrive in a box or pot. She also suggests starting by growing just one herb at a time.

While Conroy grows her herbs from seed in her own greenhouse, it is perfectly acceptable to buy plants that already have a head start. Clopton suggests plants like lemon balm because it is easy to root from a cutting. She also recommends supplementing soil with organic compost to give plants an extra boost, and making sure growing containers have good drainage.

Adding herbs to an outdoor garden or indoor space is an easy way to shrink our carbon footprint and support pollinators for the good of the planet, all the while saving on groceries. Start small with an herb garden and enjoy the numerous health and other benefits herbs offer.

Functional Medicine Approach to Colon Health

Simplified Steps to Repair and Restore the Gut

In the United States, colorectal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, the disease is expected to precipitate approximately 53,000 deaths in 2024, and incidence rates for people under 55 have been increasing by 1 to 2 percent each year. Regular screenings and lifestyle improvements, including a healthy diet and regular exercise, can decrease the risk.

“The gut is the root and the foundation of health,” says Vincent Pedre, M.D., a board-certified internist specializing in functional medicine and the best-selling author of The GutSMART Protocol. In addition to dramatically improving overall health, his protocol incorporates science-backed lifestyle modifications that have been shown to optimize gut health and reduce the incidence of colorectal cancer.

Optimizing Digestive Health

Research has proven that chronic inflammation is highly correlated with the development of colorectal cancer. A functional medicine approach begins by easing inflammation and then taking steps to restore the population of healthy bacteria in the gut by replenishing nutrients, repairing the gut lining, rebalancing the body and managing stress.

Putting out the fire in the gut: The first step is to remove the possibly offending triggers of inflammation, beginning with gluten; grains; dairy; sugar; soy; nutrient-depleted foods containing artificial ingredients, preservatives and additives; processed foods; genetically modified foods; and any ingredient for which there is a sensitivity. A practitioner can also test for and address chronic illnesses that may be impacting the gut such as hepatitis, Epstein-Barr and other viral and fungal infections.

Replenishing nutrients: To restore the vitamins, minerals, nutrients and other essential ingredients needed for proper digestion and absorption, it is important to incorporate more organic, whole foods in the diet, but that is not the full story. As Pedre explains, “There is not one right diet. If you eat foods that you cannot break down into little nutrients and absorb, then it doesn’t get broken down and tends to feed bad bugs that can grow inside of you. We really need to think about

In his book, Pedre offers a quiz that helps people determine their level of gut dysfunction. Alternatively, a practitioner can evaluate stomach acid and digestive enzyme levels to ensure that food is being broken down properly. “Digestive enzyme supplements can help pick up where your body might be falling short, breaking down your foods, making them more digestible,” explains Steven Wright, co-founder of the Healthy Gut Company. To help support the gut microbiome, Pedre recommends altering the diet to increase the number and quantity of vegetables and fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi.

Restoring the balance of good bacteria in the gut: Crucial for colon and overall health is a robust population in the gut of probiotics (the good bacteria) and prebiotics (the

food for probiotics). Fermented foods are excellent probiotic sources, while green, leafy vegetables and other high-fiber foods, as well as asparagus, carrots, garlic, leeks, raw onions, radishes and tomatoes, are some of the best prebiotics. If levels are insufficient with just food, probiotic and prebiotic supplementation may be necessary.

Repairing the gut lining: Our intestines are lined with millions of cells that create a tight barrier—the gut lining—which in essence determines what is absorbed into the bloodstream and what stays in the gut to eventually be eliminated. When the gut lining is not healthy, however, the barrier is not able to perform its job properly, allowing toxins and bacteria to leak into the body and preventing the system from properly absorbing nutrients. To repair the lining naturally, it is imperative to eat plenty of organic, whole foods that include zinc; vitamins A, C, D and E; omega-3 fatty acids; and selenium.

Rebalancing our lifestyle: “Slowing down when you eat and saying some prayers between bites is a real big deal,” Wright advises. “It allows your gut to make acid in your stomach and make enzymes work in your intestines.” He also recommends playing and spending time outdoors with our hands in the dirt and breathing in the smells and molecules that “tell our body that it is a normal environment.” Activities like gardening and yard work add diversity of microbes from the soil and will help to balance our microbiome.

Managing stress: “Stress is an attack on your gut, a self-induced attack,” Pedre notes. By incorporating coping techniques, exercise routines, consistent sleep patterns and time in nature, we help optimize gut healing and maintain the body’s well-being and balance.

Healthy Living as a Spiritual Discipline

The human body enables us to fulfill daily functions and perform unseen feats autonomically. Our hearts beat 100,000 times a day, and our 60,000 miles of blood vessels transport nutrition and oxygen to our tissues and organs so they can do their superhero jobs.

While millions of cells in the body die every day, millions more take their place. We are walking wonders of physiological orchestration, and this alone deserves our highest respect and commitment to our well-being. Here are a few inspirations for the journey.

• With a daily prayer, thank the body for its wonders and efforts. Be specific by

acknowledging distinct areas like the heart, brain and skin, as well as different functions such as breathing, hearing and seeing.

• Think of the gym, treadmill, yoga studio or hiking trail as sacred spaces.

• Consider better food choices as divine of ferings to the body’s temple.

• Make the act of food shopping a mindful activity.

• Tune into the body for five-to-10-minute intervals to acknowledge its beauty and accomplishments.

• Please the senses with nontoxic aromas, soft organic fabrics and splashes of beauty.

• Befriend any body part that is disliked or has been ignored.
