Natural Iodine Supplementation A Must for Most Americans
W
e all need iodine, yet most of us don’t get enough of it through our diet. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that iodine deficiency in the developed world has increased fourfold in the past 40 years and now affects nearly three-quarters of all adults. Numerous U.S. practicing physicians quoted widely in the media estimate that the incidence of hypothyroidism in our adult population may be between 30 and 70 percent. Thus, we can’t efficiently produce the thyroid hormones that serve as chemical messengers triggering nearly every bodily function. The presence or absence of iodine affects our every cell. Natural Awakenings Detoxifed Iodine is 100 percent natural, raw iodine in an ethyl alcohol solution. We thank all those that are benefiting from this product and enthusiastically telling us their great results. Available only at NAWebstore.com My wife, who suffered from extreme fatigue and other symptoms, saw a dramatic increase in energy after just a few days of taking the natural iodine drops. Now if she misses a day, she’ll end up falling asleep in the middle of the afternoon, like she used to do before taking the iodine. It works! ~ Aaron
deafness, attention deficient and hyperactivity disorder and impaired growth, according to studies by Boston University, China’s Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and France’s National Academy of Medicine. The answer is simple: Taking the right kind of iodine in the right dosage can rebalance thyroid function and restore health to the thyroid and the whole body.
Reasons Behind Iodine Deficiency Radiation: Almost everyone is routinely exposed to iodine-depleting radiation emitted by cell phones, Wi-Fi, microwave ovens and other electronic devices. Iodized table salt: The human body cannot utilize the iodine added to this product. Low-sodium diets: Failure to use healthy salts to fulfill sodium requirements, plus over-

Be Aware of Hypothyroidism Symptoms Low thyroid function, or hypothyroidism, is the most recognized and obvious indicator of low iodine intake because the thyroid gland contains more concentrated iodine than other organs. Symptoms can range from extreme fatigue and weight gain to depression, carpal tunnel syndrome, high blood pressure, fibrocystic breasts and a variety of skin and hair problems. Hypothyroidism can further cause infertility, joint pain, heart disease and stroke. Low iodine levels also have been associated with breast and thyroid cancers. In children, insufficient iodine has been strongly linked with mental retardation,
use of zero-nutrient table salt in foods, leads to iodine depletion. Bromine: This toxic chemical overrides iodine’s abilities to nourish the thyroid, adrenal and other hormone-producing glands. A known carcinogen, it is used as an anticaking ingredient found in almost all baked goods, unless the ingredients specifically cite unbromated flour. Iodine-depleted soils: Due to poor farming techniques, iodine and other minerals in soil have declined, so most foods today are devoid of naturally occurring iodine. Proper iodine supplementation with a high-quality product like Natural Awakenings Detoxified Iodine can prevent harm by protecting the thyroid and other endocrine glands and restoring proper hormone production.

newsbriefs New York City Conference Brings Experts to Share the Real Truth About Health
S In Memoriam John R. Voell, father, author and visionary co-founder of Natural Awakenings Publishing Corporation, has served as a mentor to our family of publishers for 15 years. During John’s time with us, the Universe responded to his faithful living of the principle to love God, one’s self and others by providing fertile soil for the big ideas he relished nurturing. His books, Cancer: How to Heal It—How to Prevent It and Cancer Report, as well as his latest development project, United We Can, were just a few of the ways that John allowed himself to be an instrument of the Divine in helping humankind. John was passionate about the success of our magazine, pleased and proud that the now 90-strong family of Natural Awakenings franchise publishers touch the lives of millions of readers each month. He’s known around here for saying, “I don’t know what your spiritual beliefs are, but I believe that when I leave this world, I’m going to somehow measure my success by those I’ve helped along the way.” Those that knew and worked with him would say that he more than succeeded—he soared.

Lets Talk Teeth Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body is a paramount phrase you will see referenced on my website many times. It’s even the title of my first book, but what is the connection?
F
irst people need to stop thinking about the mouth as something other than the first part of the digestive system. There seems to be this idea that the mouth is different from the rest of the body. You don’t think of your heart as a separate entity, so why would you think of your mouth that way? The simple truth is that your mouth is the beginning of your digestive system and is very sensitive to changes in the body. In the surgeon general’s report, Donna Shalala, said in her address of 2000: “The terms oral health and general health should not be interpreted as separate entities. Oral health is integral to general health; this report provides important reminders that oral health means more than healthy teeth and that you cannot be healthy without oral health.” Most of what we consider diseases of the oral cavity are just symptoms of the body balance. For example periodontal disease, which about 80% of our population have in some form, is not the result of failing to keep your mouth clean. How many of you have gone to a hygienist and were told that you are still developing plaque and you need to brush and or floss better. Well you can try and upgrade your cleaning techniques forever but nothing will change. Periodontal disease usually occurs when the body’s acid base balance is not where it should be. Generally periodontal disease occurs when you are too acidic. The acid is causing minerals to precipitate out of the saliva and on to the teeth forming plaque. At the same time, the mouth environment has shifted because of the acidity and the bad bacteria that are always present in small amounts now find conditions more favorable for growth. They attach to the plaque and start releasing toxins around your gums causing inflammation that can progress into bone loss. Infected gums can also triple your risk of having a stroke, according to a 1998 study of 166 stroke victims done at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. And in yet another study conducted at the University of Buffalo, researchers surveyed the health history of 9,982 people from 25 to 75 and found that the 35% with severe gum disease were twice as likely to have a stroke. But why should this happen from gum Disease? A study published in ‘The New England Journal of Medicine’ shows how C-Reactive Protein causes arteries to inflame and blood to clot, which can cause heart attacks and stroke. Medical researchers think that periodontal disease is related to increased levels of C-Reactive Protein. They say that toxins, which are generated as waste by periodontal bacteria get into the blood and trigger the liver to make more C-Reactive Protein.

New York City Edition
So now we know it’s not just your teeth that are at risk, but what’s the answer? Well, what if we were to think of periodontal disease not as a disease but as a symptom of the body being out of balance nutritionally? When treating periodontal disease I like to do a diet analysis. Patients also fill out a symptom survey form which can be found on my website natdent.com. One of the first things to do is to make sure you are alkaline. A simple way to insure you are not alkaline is with lemons. Lemons have many valuable healing properties. Lemons are good for getting rid of shingles and gallstones, and for being high in viatmin C. They are beneficial for the skin, reduce fat and dissolve certain waste particles in the blood stream. Lemons tend to remove toxins from your system, as well as reduce any radiation which might be present in the body. If you have had chemotherapy or radiation, a lemon remedy can be helpful. To push the body into an alkaline state, mix one liter of warm water a day (roughly the size of a seltzer bottle) with the amount of lemons below. Day 1- one lemon Day 2 – one and a half lemons Day 3- two lemons Day 4 – two and a half lemons Keep increasing the amount of lemons by ½ each day until you reach 5 lemons a day. Once you have achieved your high goal start decreasing the lemons by ½ a day until you get to zero. 5 lemons a day is a reasonable amount for smaller people and children. You can go up to 20 lemons a day. You can also add stevia to taste. You don’t have to drink the lemon drink all at once and can keep it in the refrigerator and sip some throughout the day. After consuming the lemon drink make sure you rinse your mouth with water every time you drink this since lemons can affect your tooth enamel over time.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome The Doctor Says You’re Not Sick, “It’s Just in Your Head”! The Illness That Doesn’t Exist! You went to the doctor, who did many tests, but they came back with nothing unusual to report. Everything was ruled out, so the doctor said, “There’s nothing wrong with you.” But, it’s just not normal to be this tired! You’re so tired at night you now go to sleep early, most every day. You sleep 8 to 12 hours and still wake up tired or even exhausted. While almost everyone experiences fatigue from time to time, this is not like anything you’ve ever experienced before. You have chronic fatigue syndrome. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says that more than one million Americans suffer from it, with the numbers growing!
The Diagnosis: Does This Sound Like You? Have you felt generally “unwell” for three months or longer? Do you have at least four of the following eight symptoms? • Weakness and exhaustion, lasting more than 24 hours, following mental or physical activity • Un-refreshing sleep • Substantial impairment of short-term memory or concentration • Muscle pain • Pain in the joints, without swelling or redness • Headaches of a new type, pattern or severity • Tender or swollen armpit and/or neck lymph nodes • Sore throat(s) In addition to the symptoms above, the most common symptoms may be problems focusing or brain “cloudiness or fog”; generalized muscle pain (fibromyalgia); a feeling of malaise after almost any exertion; irritable bowel (diarrhea or constipation); depression or anxiety; chills and night sweats; or new food, odor or chemical sensitivities.
What’s Causing It? While the CDC and doctors say the cause(s) are unknown, alternative physicians have directly linked it to the Epstein-Barr virus (mononucleosis), herpes 6 virus, candidiasis, Lyme disease (undiagnosed due to false negative tests) and cytomegalovirus. You could have one or even several of these infections causing the illness! The “traditional” doctors most likely offered no real help. If they gave you pharmaceutical medicine, it didn’t help or maybe made things worse. Even the “alternative” doctors that gave you vitamins orally and intravenously, herbs,
acupuncture, etc., only helped a little or for just a short time. Well, please don’t give up hope! For those of you that are still suffering, the answer is Intravenous Medical Ozone Therapy. You might be surprised to know that this proven, safe, but unusual, medical treatment has been used worldwide in more than 50 countries for many years (70), by over 45,000 physicians and therapists to successfully treat this and many other diseases and illnesses. Believe it or not, medical ozone is a gas that’s made at the time of treatment (it can neither be stored, bottled or put in capsules). Organizations like the American Academy of Ozone Therapy and the International Association of Ozone in Healthcare and Dentistry are now organizing and teaching doctors in our country how to use this “miracle medicine” to help sufferers overcome this and other diseases and conditions that have been virtually untreatable. So, you no longer have to suffer this debilitating illness!
More About the Symptoms
So, What’s the Answer; How Can I Fix It?
Dr. Howard Robins
More information about this amazing, safe and effective treatment is available at OzoneUniversity.com and on a fabulous DVD documentary, with more than 40 patient testimonials, called “Ozone Therapy: The Miracle Medicine,” by Gary Null, Ph.D., available from GaryNull.com. Dr. Robins will be speaking at the N.A.V.E.L. Health Expo on Sunday, November 3, at the Huntington Hilton off Route 110 in Melville. Robins is speaking at 11a.m. on medical ozone therapy effect on Lyme disease and all the causes of chronic fatigue syndrome. Robins will also speak at 4 p.m. on the effect of ozone therapy on diseases such as HPV, herpes, candidiasis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Edgar Cayce’s ARE Of New York Holistic Healing with the Edgar Cayce Remedies By Jack Rosen, Edgar Cayce Health Care Educator
“Know that all healing forces are within, not without. The applications from without are merely to create within a mental and spiritual force.” —Cayce Reading 1196-7 I have been using the Edgar Cayce Remedies for almost 50 years. My favorite treatments are the ones for muscular injuries such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, sprains, tendon and ligament injuries and hairline fractures. Here is why: Healing my son’s hairline fracture. Like Edgar Cayce, who often helped his sons with remedies recommended in his psychic readings, I helped my own son with the treatment of a hairline fracture. When my son David was 16, he fractured his ankle. A removable fiberglass cast was put on his foot. The pain was so severe that he asked me if I could do something about it. The ankle looked like it had a grapefruit in it. I gently removed the cast, wrapped my son’s ankle with a tee shirt soaked in warm castor oil, and then placed a heating pad around it. After two hours I removed the pack. The swelling and the pain were gone. I then proceeded to rub his ankle with an Edgar Cayce formula called Egyptian Oil (its main ingredient is peanut oil). The second evening, I made a different Edgar Cayce pack using apple cider vinegar and wrapped it in a heating pad. I mixed apple cider vinegar in a saturated solution of salt. I did this treatment for five days in a row. We also applied Egyptian Oil every day. After five days, we took David back to the Orthopedist who reported that he couldn’t find the fracture on the X-ray he took. I had to show him the previous three X-rays that were taken before the treatments that clearly showed the hairline fracture. This Orthopedist said in disbelief that the treatment I used could never have done what I said it did. My son, who was 16 at the time, innocently told him that that was exactly what I did. By the way, Castor Oil Packs and Egyptian Oil are also part of the Edgar Cayce treatment for Arthritis. Saving a friend’s foot from amputation. A friend of mine fell off of a 100-foot cliff while ice climbing. He was flown by helicopter to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. When he arrived at the hospital, doctors wanted to amputate his severely injured foot to save his life. Besides two
broken ankles, he also had a torn carotid artery, several broken ribs and his pelvis was broken into two pieces. Using several of the Edgar Cayce Remedies—including the packs, oils, positive thinking and prayer—he was able to make a full enough recovery to win the New York State Tree Climbing Championship one-year later… on two healthy feet. A year and a half later, his Emergency Room doctor told a group of interns to look at him because he was a miracle—they would never see something like this again. My friend’s wife turned to them and said: “Why not? If it worked for him it can work for others.” Watch this story of “A Miracle Healing” under Resources/Videos at www.edgarcaycenyc.org Every week, Cayce Health Care Educator Jack Rosen offers affordable workshops and individual consultations explaining how to use the Cayce remedies to help bring the body back to its natural state of health. Walnuts Strengthen Sperm
A
dding a handful of walnuts to a man’s daily diet might just increase the chance of pregnancy for couples with fertility problems. Scientists attribute male infertility as the central issue in 30 to 50 percent of the 70 million couples worldwide experiencing such difficulties. Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, investigated whether increasing intake of the polyunsaturated fatty acids found in fish, flax seed and walnuts that are critical for sperm maturation and membrane function would increase sperm quality in men consuming a typical Western-style diet. They found that less than three ounces of walnuts added to a man’s daily diet improved sperm strength, size and motility (swimming ability). The men eating the walnuts also showed fewer chromosomal abnormalities in their sperm.
HAPPY LIFE, HEALTHY HEART
F
eelings matter when it comes to protecting a person’s physical health. Researchers at Boston’s Harvard School of Public Health reviewing more than 200 studies published in two major scientific databases found a direct correlation between positive psychological well-being and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes. They concluded that positive feelings like optimism, life satisfaction and happiness are associated with the reduced risk, regardless of a person’s age, weight or socioeconomic or smoking status.
ROSEMARY REVS UP MEMORY
R
osemary’s folkloric reputation for improving memory has been validated by science. UK researchers at London’s Northumbria University found that when the essential oil of rosemary was diffused into a room—a method practiced in aromatherapy—it enhanced participants’ ability to remember past events and remind themselves to do tasks planned for the future, like sending an anniversary card. Mark Moss, Ph.D., head of psychology at Northumbria, says, “We wanted to build on our previous research that indicated rosemary aroma improved long-term memory and mental arithmetic. In this study, we focused on prospective memory, which is critical for everyday functioning.” In the study, 66 people randomly assigned to either a rosemary-scented or unscented room were asked to complete a variety of tests to assess their memory functions. Those in the rosemary-scented room outperformed the control group. Blood analysis of those exposed to the rosemary aroma confirmed higher concentrations of 1,8-cineole, the oil’s compound specifically linked to memory improvement. The researchers concluded that the aroma of rosemary essential oil can enhance cognitive functioning in healthy individuals and may have implications for treating people with memory impairment. The findings were presented at the British Psychological Society Annual Conference, in Harrogate.
Eczema?
USING HERBS TO HEAL TOPICAL SKIN CONDITIONS
S
kin conditions and their causes—be it chemical exposure or viral, fungal or bacterial infections—can be very difficult to diagnose and challenging to resolve. Without extensive testing, the exact cause can be very elusive, and a simple rash can become a big problem. However, according to traditional herbology, an herbal salve made from specific plant parts will tackle just about any skin infection or rash; this excludes psoriasis, which actually is an immune system disorder, rather than a topical skin problem. Certain herbs used externally are known to kill bacteria, fungi and viruses and help the body to repair damaged skin by increasing the cell proliferation rate and relieving the itch and pain. Poke root, chaparral, blood root, neem, burdock and humic acid kill pathogens with very low risk of harm or irritation in most people. Calendula, aloe vera and comfrey are used to heal damaged skin by providing nutrients to keep skin cells healthy and increase the rate at which skin cells are replaced. White willow bark and arnica Montana provide pain relief, while calendula, St. John’s wort and chickweed suppress inflammation and reduce itching. Herbal extracts can be blended into topical salves that enable a holistic, natural approach to eliminating skin conditions and enable the skin to heal. Millennials Devote Time, Talent, Treasure Much is rightly written about how and why “millennials”, or “Generation Y”—the young people heading into the 21st century—spend their time and money. This generation is redefining the way we think about business, and conscious consumerism is now its own form of philanthropy. This age group is leading the charge by extending the premise of a moral compass to for-profit enterprises and looking for ever-more meaningful opportunities to have an impact. The trend carries fresh implications for the nonprofit sector, too, because millennials lead the way in forwarding worthy causes. When The Case Foundation partnered with Achieve, a thought leader in nonprofit millennial engagement, to produce the Millennial Impact Report, researchers surveyed more than 2,500 millennials ages 20 to 35. They found that last year, 83 percent gave a financial gift to an organization supporting a cause that resonates with their interests. Seventy-three percent volunteered for a cause that they were passionate about or felt created impact, and 70 percent are raising money for their causes both online and offline.

If that doesn’t seem like a pastime that teaches values of fairness and social justice, there’s a new game in town—Co-opoly. In the 21st-century game, invented by the Toolbox for Education and Social Action (ToolboxForEd.org), players develop cooperative businesses using a team effort. Sharing knowledge and creating cooperative strategies determine whether everyone wins or loses. Instead of encouraging players to grab up all the wealth and bankrupt others, it showcases the economic success that can result when people work together.

Chipotle’s Identifies GMO Ingredients Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not require the labeling of genetically modified organisms (GM or GMO) used as ingredients in any food, the Chipotle Mexican Grill national fast food restaurant chain has chosen to do so, on the way to eliminating them from its menu altogether. They have already switched fryers from using soybean oil, almost always made from genetically modified sources, to sunflower oil, which is not. With 1,400 locations, Chipotle reports that its labeling system reflects that it does use GMO soybean oil in some of its products and that most of the grain used to feed its animals for meat and dairy is GMO corn. The chain’s success in this effort may also prompt other fast food outlets to follow suit. 14

Frack Attack
Controversial Drilling Threatens Pacific Ocean Federal regulators have approved at least two hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”, operations on oil rigs in the Santa Barbara Channel off the coast of California since 2009 without an updated environmental review that critics say may be required by federal law. Environmental advocates are concerned that regulators and the industry have not properly reviewed the potential impacts of fracking in the Pacific outer continental shelf. Fracking, a subject of heated debate, is a method of drilling that forces water, chemicals and sand deep beneath the Earth’s surface at high pressure to break up underground rock and release oil and gas. Offshore fracking is currently used to stimulate oil production in old wells and provide well-bore stability. In California, the oil company Venoco has been using fracking technology to stimulate oil production in an old well off the coast of Santa Barbara—where the public memory of the nation’s third-largest oil spill in 1969 lingers—since early 2010. Another firm recently received permission for fracking in the Santa Barbara Channel, home to the Channel Islands Marine Reserve. So far, offshore fracking is rare, but officials expect that other firms may seek to utilize the environmentally damaging technology on offshore rigs in the future. Bamboozled Bamboo Fabric a Product of Greenwashing
At least one dealer in sustainable products has taken a stand against bamboo fabric, which most people associate with bamboo lumber, a rapidly renewable resource that requires fewer pesticides to grow than other crops. Laura Mathews, of Eco Promotional Products, Inc., in Washington state, cites the Federal Trade Commission’s report: “The truth is, most bamboo textile products, if not all, really are rayon, which typically is made using environmentally toxic chemicals. While different plants, including bamboo, can be used as a source material to create rayon, there’s no trace of the original plant in the finished rayon product.” Mathews says that her company has discontinued selling bamboo clothing and all other items made from bamboo fabric. She notes, “It’s the responsibility of everyone to vet these and other similar terms to ensure that the eco-friendly product you’re putting your purchasing power behind is actually eco-friendly.” Source: EcoPromotionsOnline.com

Unplug to Cut Stress, Up Success Whether it’s extreme texting, tweeting, Googling, posting or blogging, the phenomenon of being caught in the web of the Web is real. Rationalizations range from coping with today’s information overload to fear of missing out (FOMO). Yet, detriments of such continual digital connectedness range from the stifling of family and social bonds to a lack of life skills that only face-toface communication fosters. In 2011, The New York University Child Study Center reported that 8-to-18-year-olds average more than six hours of daily media use and that school grades of a surveyed group that considered themselves “heavy” users were considerably lower than their “light” use counterparts. Stanford Communications Professor Clifford Nass, author of The Man Who Lied to His Laptop, remarked in a 2013 NPR interview that people that do extensive media multitasking “can’t filter out irrelevancy, can’t manage memory and are chronically distracted. They say they are productive and can ‘shut it off’, but can’t keep on task and focus on one thing.” Fortunately, programs to unplug are catching on. More than 400 middle and high schools in 20 U.S. states plus Canada took a Digital Blackout Challenge to refrain from using electronic devices for one week during the 2012-2013 school year (DigitalBlackout.org). From Chief Sealth International High School, in Seattle, Washington, senior Marissa Evans says the experience informed her “there’s a balance between ‘too much’ and ‘just enough’” in being connected, and classmate Alex Askerov terms the Challenge “a breath of fresh air.” For the 2013 documentary film, Sleeping with Siri, Seattle-based journalist Michael Stusser underwent a oneweek, self-assessed “techno gorge”, followed by a digital detox of the same duration. During stage one, he said his blood pressure went up 40 points after four days. He found, “You’re always waiting for a response.” He subsequently enjoyed being disconnected. Fracking Impact Hits Close to Home … and new pipeline project looms By Ellen Weininger
A
growing number of people are beginning to comprehend the health and environmental impacts of hydrofracking, or shale gas extraction, and oppose the practice; yet they often assume the negative impact of “fracking” is confined to areas where such operations are conducted. However, as the expansion of natural gas infrastructure sweeps the New York tri-state area, we are quickly learning that both the infrastructure and the new gas supply itself pose health and environmental threats very close to home. Fracking involves the highpressure injection of a highly toxic brew—millions of gallons of fresh water mixed with hundreds of chemicals and sand—into well bores to crack open shale. Unfortunately, 10 to 40 percent of this poisonous mixture returns to the surface with the natural gas, along with additional contaminants including heavy metals and radioactive elements like radon. And the negative impact doesn’t end there. The full life cycle of shale gas production involves clearing large swaths of land; building roads; trucking millions of gallons of water, chemicals and hazardous waste; and creating a vast infrastructure—including pipelines that can leak and explode and highly polluting compressor stations—to bring natural gas, primarily composed of 16
New York City Edition
methane, to our homes, schools and other buildings. The supply of natural gas in our area is expected to change this November, when the new Spectra Pipeline begins delivering natural gas from Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale region to New York City, Westchester and beyond. Marcellus Shale gas, known for its high levels of radon and other radioactive materials, will likely supplement and then ultimately replace the city’s current natural gas supply, which comes from the Gulf Coast. The Gulf Coast supply, which has very low levels of radon to begin with, takes four or more days to reach the New York area, allowing sufficient time for radon decay to take place. (It takes 3.8 days for radon to begin to decay.) In contrast, US Geological Survey data indicate radon levels in the Marcellus Shale may be 20 to 80 times greater than current Gulf Coast levels—and this new gas supply would travel for less than a day. This shorter transport time is inadequate for radon to decay prior to delivery, increasing the risk of public exposure to high levels of this known lung carcinogen. Data indicate gas delivery from wellhead to each gas appliance like stoves, fireplaces, water heaters and boilers, could increase current levels of radon exposure by a factor of anywhere from 20 to 80 times or na-newyorkcity.com
more; however, the cumulative impact of multiple exposures from several gas appliances in one dwelling is unknown. According to the Centers for Disease Control and other federal and global health agencies, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers nationwide. There are no safe levels of radon exposure, and children, the elderly, and those already health-compromised are particularly vulnerable to its effects. Unfortunately, the natural gas infrastructure in our region may spread further. A proposed expansion of the Spectra Algonquin pipeline is slated for Westchester, Rockland and Putnam Counties, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) held two scoping meetings on the proposal—one in Westchester County on September 30 and one in Danbury, Connecticut on October 1—with negligible communication to public officials and the general public. While numerous requests to extend the deadline were made, October 14 marked the FERC deadline for public comments on the scoping process. One of many concerns about the proposed pipeline is that it would intersect with a proposed underground high-voltage transmission line just a few hundred feet from the Indian Point nuclear power plant’s spent fuel pool,
and in close proximity to the Ramapo fault. The project would also involve replacing its existing 26-inch diameter pipeline with a 42-inch high pressure pipeline between Ramapo and Fairfield County, Connecticut. Explosions by natural gas pipelines can cause extensive damage, and pipelines also leak methane, a far more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. With inadequate pipeline regulation and oversight and Spectra’s history of safety issues, this pipeline project poses a serious threat to public health, safety, property values and the economy. The new Spectra Algonquin project would include the expansion and construction of five compressor stations, which are loud and operate continuously, with each one emitting tons of toxic pollutants a year. Health problems associated with compressor station releases include respiratory and neurological problems, headaches, skin lesions, blisters and bloody noses, among others. The impact could be critical for citizens of the tri-state area, where air quality is already unacceptable according to US Environmental Protection Agency standards. Although the US Energy Information Administration projects a steady decline in demand for natural gas through 2040, gas infrastructure projects are proliferating across New York and other states. Given the glut of natural gas and cheap energy prices domestically, one could surmise that natural gas exportation is the ultimate goal. Expanding and building new gas infrastructure unwisely invests in dirty fossil fuels at a time when we should be fast-tracking our investment in and expansion of clean, renewable energy infrastructure instead. What can you do to protect your family and community? 1. Test your home’s radon level now, as a baseline, in case that level increases later. Minimally Invasive Ozone Implants A dental implant is an artificial root that is placed in the bone to replace missing teeth or stabilize a denture. What is an implant and who needs them?
healing. This mini implant has the abutment attached to it as one piece so that no extra visit is necessary. At the same visit that we place the implant, we can also place the finished restoration, the crown.
There are many reasons to have a dental implant placed. Replacing missing teeth is very important to maintain the ability to properly chew your food and not have all your biting on just one side of your mouth. For wearers of dentures, having a loose denture is a nightmare. Using dental implants to stabilize the denture can completely change how you eat and smile.
The advantages of minimally invasive ozone implants
Traditional Implants
Traditional implants are placed by cutting a flap of gum to expose the bone, then drilling a hole 5-6 mm wide (about the size of a No. 2 pencil). The implant is placed into the bone and the area is left alone to heal for about 2-3 months. At the second visit, a small amount of gum is removed to uncover the implant and place a healing cap onto it. Then an abutment can be placed which connects the implant from below the gum to a visible above the gum structure upon which a crown (cap) can be fabricated.
no cutting of the gum versus cutting it twice - A 2 mm hole in the bone instead of a 5-6 mm hole - Use of ozone to kill bacteria and speed up the healing process - Little to no discomfort after the procedure
• Fewer visits to the dentist
Minimally invasive ozone implants are very different from the traditional implants. At the initial visit we take an impression of the area that is going to have the implant. There is no need to cut a flap of gum, a tiny hole is made through the gum and a very small hole is made in the bone (2 mm). The area is then treated with ozone gas to kill any bacteria and speed up the healing process. Then a very small implant is placed gently into the bone using ozonated oil to create a bacteria free area and allow for much faster New York City Edition

Dr. Peter Silver
For over 18 years, Dr. Peter Silver, DDS, has been practicing MIOD in Greenwich Village, near Union Square. MIOD is the use of specialized techniques and technology that allows your teeth and gums to be healed in the most gentle manner possible. Traditional dentistry attacks cavities by removing healthy tooth structure along with the decay. Dr. Silver uses Ozone gas to eliminate the bacteria, leaving your healthy tooth structure unharmed.
In many cases, no drilling or injections are needed, because Dr. Silver uses an air/powder spray to remove the decay that doesn’t cause any discomfort. For more extensive restorations, pain free injections are given and you are profoundly numb so that nothing will bother you. For those with any dental anxiety, we have nitrous oxide (laughing gas) which helps you relax in our extra soft chairs. We also offer Sedation Dentistry (Sleep Dentistry) for those patients who want a completely alternative visit. After wiping out the bacteria, a remineralization solution is placed on the tooth, so it can start healing itself immediately. Then a tooth colored restoration is placed and your tooth is ready for chewing!

The Miracle of Midlife Being Exactly Who We Need to Be by Marianne Williamson
H
ow would we live, were we not afraid of death? How would we live if we gave ourselves permission to give to life everything we’ve got? In The Longevity Factor, Lydia Brontë, Ph.D., observes that we’ve added 15 years to our lives… but in the middle, not at the end. No longer identifying ourselves as “over the hill” at whatever age, we are simply removing the hill. We are forging a different conversation and a new vision to take us beyond the limited thought forms that have defined the parameters of age for generations. For the first time in history, we can realistically view the first half of life as a kind of gestation period, preparing us for an even more productive second half. Midlife is like a second puberty, a point at which one persona falls away and another comes to take its place. What happens then is up to us. Some begin a long, slow cruise toward death at that point, allowing memories to become more meaningful than the present. Others, remembering that the spirit within us never ages, see the moment of midlife as a rebirth—the time to put our engines into high gear. Whomever it is we were born to be, whatever our soul was coded to accomplish, whatever lessons we are here to learn; now is the time to seriously get

going. We may regret that we’re no longer young, but we’re ecstatic that we’re no longer clueless. We must be disciplined, though. We want to become precision instruments now, focused on exactly what we want to do and being exactly who we need to be. This requires separating from the person we were before to whatever extent that person was not who we know in our hearts we were created to be. There’s no more time for five-year detours. No more time for relationships that don’t serve us or for staying in situations that aren’t true to who we are. No more time for pettiness, false pride or whatever other dysfunctional roadblocks obstruct our higher destiny and the joy that’s meant to be ours. Our life might not be as fabulous as it used to be in some ways, but in other ways it’s even more fabulous. The Universe is constantly and infinitely elastic, responding not to our past, but to our present state of mind. As we learn to reprogram thoughts—atoning for our mistakes of the past and embracing the endless miraculous possibilities of the present—we step into a time when we have every reason to look forward with genuine excitement to what happens next. Individually and collectively, we na-newyorkcity.com
are now fitted to fearlessly forge new ground, wielding the power of what life has taught us so far and laying claim to the possibility of redemption, not only for ourselves, but also for the entire world. The planet needs a new story, aligned with a larger consciousness, and so do we. What we need now are imagination and courage. Many of us feel we’ve forever carried around a secret dream, rarely validating it even to ourselves and often denying its reality. Yet it has refused to go away and is ready to be born at last. Individuals that have spent decades achieving one thing or moving in one direction often take up something else entirely that gives them far more psychic satisfaction. They see achievements that were the height of their material success as preparation for an even greater one; the means by which they learned the skills ultimately needed to make their biggest contribution to the world. Divine law guarantees that the power of “now” presents an endless fount of miraculous opportunities. In God, there are no limits to how high we can go, ever. In God, there is no time… only the call of the soul. It is not too late; we are right on time and we are better than we know. Now, having visited so many other places in our journey of life, we seek our place within the collective heartbeat of holiness. When enough of us stand in the light of our higher purpose, seeking to be ever-greater servants of love, each consciously dedicated to creating a more loving world, then a new field of collective possibility will emerge among us. All that is not love will begin to fall away of its own dead weight. A profound moment of planetary renewal will occur then, after our having allowed it first to occur within us. Marianne Williamson is an internationally acclaimed inspirational author and lecturer. Six of her 10 books have been New York Times bestsellers, including The Age of Miracles: Embracing the New Midlife, the basis for this article.
FOUND OBJECTS By Sue Frederick, author of Bridges to Heaven: True Stories of Loved Ones on the Other Side
I
n my daily work with clients, I’ve heard hundreds of stories about grieving people finding an object that they believe is a sign from their departed loved one. These experiences are always very healing for the grieving person— a moment that helps them understand that their loved one lives on and watches over them. On Valentine’s Day, seven months after my husband Paul died, I was going through a filing cabinet, looking for financial information to prepare my taxes, when I discovered a chocolate Valentine heart with a ribbon wrapped around it and a note from Paul wishing me, Happy Valentine’s Day. It stunned me to find it. As I sat on the floor, crying and amazed to be holding a Valentine’s gift from my dead husband on Valentine’s Day, I remembered that one year ago, Paul had said he couldn’t find a little Valentine’s gift he’d bought me. He was frustrated that he couldn’t remember where he’d put it. One year later, seven months after his death, he nudged me to find it where he’d left it. He helped me find it exactly on Valentine’s Day. These impossible events are not coincidences. They’re our loved ones reaching out to help us heal and to show us that we’re not alone. Take a moment to reflect on when this may have happened in your life. Do you remember finding something that you knew in your heart was a gift from your departed? Honor them by acknowledging you received it and knew it was from them. Say, “Thank you, I recognize your divine presence in my life.”
SIGNS IN NATURE
When your loved one crosses over, they’ll often manifest signs in nature to let you know that they’re still watching over you. Yet we frequently dismiss these signs as meaningless. How frustrating this must be to our loved ones on the other side! They reach out to comfort us and we dismiss it as coincidence. When Paul and I were falling in love, he gave me a beautiful silver necklace and matching earrings with a jade moon and star pendant. The necklace pendant and each earring featured a crescent moon with a star in the
middle of the crescent. He told me that he was the moon and I was his shining star. This became the symbol of our love, and I wore the necklace every day. Many times during our relationship he whispered to me, “You’re my shining star.” Three days after his death on July 13, we held an outdoor memorial service in our backyard. It was a clear beautiful summer evening in the mountains. A group of about thirty friends sat in a large circle, sharing Paul stories. In the middle of this heartfelt evening, a friend nudged me to look up at the sky. Directly above us was the crescent moon with a bright star (Jupiter) in the middle of the crescent— exactly reflecting the image in the pendant Paul had given me, which I was wearing that evening. I shared this uncanny sign with our friends and passed around my necklace for everyone to see. The pendant was duplicated in the sky above our heads. We all felt a rush of energy and knew that Paul was with us. It was a healing moment for everyone in the group— a sense of his presence and a sign of divine order in action. Later I learned that the sky configuration with Jupiter nestled inside the crescent moon rarely occurs. I don’t believe in coincidences. Imagine how many factors were in motion to line up that exact astronomical configuration (which had always symbolized our relationship) on the night I would be sitting outside, mourning his loss with my friends at his memorial service. Divine order is so much greater than we can imagine. Good morning sunshine! Serotonin, Vitamin D & SAD By Paul Huljich
L
ike all living things, we need the sun. For millions of years, humans have spent many hours out in the sun each day. In the same way that plants harness the sun’s rays through photosynthesis, our bodies use sunlight to help the skin produce the vitamin D it needs to build bones, bolster the immune system and even protect against cancer (including skin cancer). In today’s modern world, most people have lifestyles that deny them sunshine therefore preventing them from acquiring the levels of vitamin D that evolution intended us to have. The sun’s ultraviolet-B rays absorbed through the skin are the body’s main source of this nutrient. “As a species, we do not get as much sun exposure as we used to, and dietary sources of vitamin D are minimal,” Dr. Edward Giovannucci, nutrition researcher at the Harvard School of Public Health, wrote in The Archives of Internal Medicine.1 In the past few years, numerous studies have shown that optimizing your vitamin D levels may actually help prevent as many as 16 different types of cancer including pancreatic, lung, breast, ovarian, prostate and colon cancers. There is even evidence that Vitamin D protects against colds, flu and viral infections.2 Yet despite our knowledge of the many benefits of Vitamin D, we live in a culture that has grown to demonize the sun, and hence are facing the consequences of an increase in Vitamin D deficiency. Industrialization of today’s world has greatly contributed to widespread vitamin D deficiency. Whereas humans used to spend many hours outside every day working in fields, on farms, and (pre-agricultural revolution) hunting and 22

foraging for food; the majority of people in today’s world work and recreate mostly indoors. Technology has cast a system in which we spend most of our times commuting in vehicles to work in either offices or enclosed spaces, then spending our leisure time in either in shopping malls, movie theaters, bars, restaurants, or in our own homes in front of the television or computer screens. Studies show that as many as three out of four Americans suffer from Vitamin D deficiency. A study published in 2009 in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that 70 percent of Caucasians, 90 percent of Hispanics and 97 percent of African Americans in the US have insufficient blood levels of vitamin D. Traditionally, vitamin D has been viewed by researchers and physicians as functioning mainly to maintain bone density and prevent bone loss. Bone-softening diseases that have been attributed to vitamin D deficiency include osteomalacia, osteopenia, and osteoporosis in adult patients. Consequently, emerging research suggests that the presence of vitamin D contributes to the overall health of other body systems, including the immune system, the autoimmune system, the cardiovascular system, and the integumentary system.3 Vitamin D deficiency can also lead to other conditions such as “Seasonal Affective Disorder” (SAD) and insomnia. SAD is a situational mood disorder brought on by diminishing daylight in the fall and winter months. High doses of vitamin D during these months have proven to be a very effective natural remedy for SAD, leading most practitioners to believe that normal neurotransmitter function depends in part on adequate na-newyorkcity.com
vitamin D synthesis. Vitamin D levels are inversely related to those of melatonin, a mood-regulating hormone. Melatonin helps temper your circadian rhythms, with darkness triggering melatonin secretion by the pineal gland within your brain, helping to promote a healthy night’s sleep. Melatonin influences insomnia, mood swings and even food cravings. Sunlight shuts melatonin production off, while triggering release of vitamin D — that’s why doctors recommend getting outdoors as a remedy for jet lag.4 The effect of sunlight, Vitamin D and Serotonin in winter are intrinsically connected. Serotonin synthesis is hypothesized to be dependent on the duration of bright light exposure the previous summer. When we wake up and wear our sun glasses first thing in the morning, it changes our of natural day light input, hence interfering with our circadian rhythm. Try to soak in the morning sun and where your sunglasses after 10am. But... don’t get too excited and overdose on the sunshine! You can get a sunburn at ANY time of year, not just the summer months. If you are heading out to soak up some early rays, protect your skin with a light sunscreen, like SPF 15 -- especially if you are fair skinned or burn easily! Otherwise, exposing yourself to too much sun can lead you down the road to skin cancer. uster came to us for a reason,” says Amy Burkert. “My husband, Rod, and I were walking our Shar-Pei, Ty, in our Philadelphia neighborhood when a man warned us about ‘a big, black dog’ in the alley. The friendly fellow came home with us and after a fruitless search for his family, we decided to make him part of ours.” In 2009, when the couple encountered difficulty finding a vacation hotel that would accept their new 70-pound German shepherd as an overnight guest, they decided to launch GoPetFriendly.com, a website that assists in finding travel accommodations for families with dogs and other pets. Selling their house in Pennsylvania and hitting the road in a 24-foot-long RV, they’ve now traveled to 47 states to research and qualify content for the website; Rod works from “home” and Amy writes the weblog. Their travel schedule flexes, with most stops lasting one to three weeks. “It’s not the life two accountants were banking on, but we couldn’t be happier,” she says, “and we owe it all to Buster.” The site now lists more than 60,000 hotels, campgrounds, restaurants, beaches, dog parks and activities across the U.S. and Canada, plus a road trip planner. “I woke up one morning and thought, ‘I can’t find a husband, so I’ll get a dog,’” says BJ Gallagher, a sociologist and awardwinning author. “I’d lived in my Los Angeles house for 16 years and knew none of the neighbors. Within six months of adopting Fannie from a shelter, I’d met them all. Thanks to her, I’ve become a full-fledged member of my community.” Fannie’s Chinese heritage

includes chow and Pekingese breeds. Transformations can come from more unusual pets, as well. Soon after Susan M. Tellem, a registered nurse in Malibu, California, gifted her husband, Marshall, with two tortoises for his birthday, the couple discovered there was no national protection program for the reptiles. They started American Tortoise Rescue (Tortoise.com), an organization that has been rescuing, rehabilitating and providing sanctuary to more than 3,000 water turtles and land tortoises since 1990. Their education and awareness initiatives for humane treatment have gone international, as well. It was a bird that rescued April Leffingwell. She had been dealing with a severe back injury that necessitated pain medication and kept her from regular work for six months when she and her husband visited a local Los Angeles pet store, “to get out of the house.” She was touched by seeing a large Moluccan cockatoo that was afflicted with a damaged claw. Her husband recognized how she related to the bird’s condition and brought Izzi home the next day. Now with just one leg, Izzi has learned to sleep while lying down to rest his other limb. “Izzi and I found each other when we were both broken,” she says. “We’ve become each other’s source of strength. If he can live with only one leg, I can live through pain.” When members of the armed forces deploy, they often have to find alternate living arrangements for pets and may not always be successful. Kimberly Gauthier, a blogger at KeepTheTailWagging.com, and her ex-Army partner are securing funding and laying plans to foster dogs for deployed soldiers. Emailing updates and Skype visits will aim to boost the morale of both the dog and serviceman or woman. The couple lives on five acres in Marysville, Washington. An animal-enriched environment has proved to be helpful for author Kathy Rowe, a 20-year veteran retired from the military, and her husband, Scott, who also retired from Air Force service that included Special Forces duty. They have chosen to live on a 100acre farm in Tyner, Kentucky. Kathy believes their variety of resident rescued animals, including dogs, cats, chickens, turkeys and a potbelly pig, all help Scott in dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder. Riding, working with and grooming his horse, Quint, is particularly helpful. “My husband is less frustrated, has better focus, is less jumpy and has fewer flashbacks than he used to,” relates Rowe. “Knowing that our rescue dog, Lola, is guarding the farm, he feels he can sleep better because she has his back.” Humans rescue animals, but animals show up for a reason— most humans can use some rescuing, as well. LIVING GRATITUDE
A Taproot of Happiness
Be Thankful Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire.
by Leo Babauta
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?
I
“
f the only prayer you said in your whole life was, ‘Thank you,’ that would suffice,” a maxim first voiced by mystic Meister Eckhart, has held true through the centuries. Why should this simple act mean so much? Expressing gratitude works wonders. Gratitude reminds us to recognize good people in our life. They range from loved ones to those that render a kindness to a stranger. Treasuring goodness in every form brings more of it into our experience. Gratitude turns bad things into good things. Having problems at work? Be grateful to be employed and serving others. Challenges keep life interesting, enhance judgment and strengthen character. Gratitude reminds us of what’s important. Being grateful to have a healthy family and friends, a home and food on the table puts smaller worries in perspective. Gratitude reminds you to say, “Thank you.” Call, email or stop by to say thanks… it takes just a few minutes to express our reason for doing so. People like being appreciated. It creates a satisfying beam of mutual happiness that shines on.
Habit-Forming Tips
Here are some ways to overcome any initial discomfort felt in stepping forward to thank others. 26
New York City Edition
Create a morning gratitude session. Take a few minutes each morning to close your eyes, silence the to-dos and give thanks to whomever and whatever is cause for gratitude. Show thanks. Sometimes we think about something helpful or kind that someone did for us recently or long ago. Make a note, call them up or even better, tell them in person with sincere conviction why you continue to be grateful and appreciative. Another option is a thank-you card or email—keep it short and sweet. See the silver lining even in “negative” situations. There are always two ways to look at something. We can perceive something as stressful, harmful, sad, unfortunate and difficult, or look for the good embedded in just about everything. Problems held in a positive light from a different perspective can be opportunities to grow and to be creative in devising a solution. Learn a gratitude prayer. Many songs and prayers, religious or not, serve to remind us to be grateful. Find or write a special one and post it in a highly visible spot. Leo Babauta is the founder of the simplicity blog, ZenHabits.net, and author of bestselling e-books Focus, The Little Guide to Un-Procrastination and Zen to Done. na-newyorkcity.com
Be thankful when you don’t know something for it gives you the opportunity to learn. Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times, you grow. Be thankful for your limitations because they give you opportunities for improvement. Be thankful for each new challenge because it will build your strength and character. Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valuable lessons. Be thankful when you’re tired and weary because it means you’ve made a difference. It is easy to be thankful for the good things. A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks. Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive. Find a way to be thankful for your troubles and they can become your blessings. ~ Author unknown
