Natural Hormone Therapy for Men and Women
I
f you think that your life is over after the menopause, you are wrong. There are so many perks to menopause! Seriously, you can now travel without tampons and pads, and make your reservations without regard to that time of the month. You can have all the great sex that you want, without counting the days of “being late” afterwards. Of course, there are some intimate issues that can bother menopausal and perimenopausal women, which can easily be alleviated, if you discuss them with your physician. You don’t have to wait for your preventive check up if you are bothered by some common symptoms related to crossing that Rubicon called the menopause. The fact is that as women age, the ovaries start making fewer sex hormones in preparation for the cessation of reproduction. This stage may last from 4-6 years, and most women begin perimenopause in the early to mid-forties. However, each woman is different and may experience it earlier or later. Peri-menopause can cause a number of uncomfortable symptoms that are related to hormone decline. Some of these symptoms are: bloatedness, insomnia, low libido, vaginal dryness, mood swings, night-sweats, and hot flashes. Loss of youthful levels of hormones will, in many cases, lead to osteoporosis and premature cognitive decline. The men are not immune to aging either. When Viagra came out on the market some twenty years ago, men felt as those this was the whole answer to their prayers, as far as male virility is concerned. Turns out that Viagra is only a part of the anti-aging equation. Starting in the 30’s, testosterone production in men begins to reduce by 10% each decade, and when a man reaches his 40’s or 50’s, testosterone takes a steep drop. This is commonly called an andropause. A man going through andropause may notice that workouts are not as effective as they once were, and on average, most men lose 12-15 pounds of muscle mass with hormone decline. Men going through andropause may also notice an extra layer of fat accumulation around the middle, and this is because the decreased muscle mass will have slowed down metabolism and caused fat to

accumulate in replacement of lean muscle. Other common complaints include: decline of libido and erectile dysfunction, hair loss, high blood pressure, insomnia, depression mood swings, cognitive decline, and fatigue. Clearly, Viagra is not enough to address all of these issues. I prefer to use Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)to help patients combat the effects of aging in a safest and most comprehensive way possible. Bioidentical hormones are molecularly identical to the ones Mother Nature has endowed us with. Back in the 1980’ies studies using synthetic pharmaceuticals made from the horse urine revealed dangerous side effects in many women who took them. Today, the general consensus among the antiaging M.D. physicians is that BHRT can help avoid all the complications associated with the hormonal prescriptions of the past. BHRT is administered as transdermal (creams that are rubbed into the skin) or intravaginal creams or gels, made according to prescription by the compounding pharmacy. The transdermal method of delivery is the most natural and similar to the way Mother Nature intended the slow gradual release of the hormones into our bloodstream. Using BHRT as a cream or a gel also allows for bypassing the gastro-intestinal tract where most of the hormones would be digested, modified and would never reach the bloodstream in their active form. Under the meticulous follow-up of the experienced physician, BHRT is a safe and effective solution for female and male hormonal aging. And the biggest perk of this anti-aging approach is that we get to spend more quality time with our spouses, children, and grandchildren. Energy for Life
A
re you chronically tired? Have you even been diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder like Lupus, Fibromyalgia, or Rheumatoid Arthritis? These are illnesses in which the body attacks itself, and our cells don’t recognize our other cells as “me.” Western medicine doesn’t have a good explanation for this, and can’t help much. Typically, doctors tell patients to “learn to live with it.” Consider this. When we aren’t living our soul’s plan for our life, our souls “check out” to some degree. “Nothing’s going on here I want to do.” As the soul pulls out of the body, the “me” leaves, and auto-immune disorders begin. This is a wonderful realization! As soon as we begin to focus on what’s really happening – that we aren’t living the life our soul intends us to live – we can begin to heal. This is exactly what the Lightworkers Healing Method does – help people align with their soul plans, and live the life their souls intend them to live. As we realign with our soul plan, chronic diseases heal. In an “impossibly” short time, we can once again be vibrantly healthy and move into JOY. Classes forming now; distance learning and Webinar options available. Deva Premal & Miten Bring MantraFest to New York

eva Premal & Miten will be in New York on Saturday, September 21 to bring the sacred spirit of India’s ancient mantras to audiences at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center. The New York concert is part of the MantraFest 2013 Tour, the duo’s 25-city North American tour, featuring special guests Manose, Maneesh de Moor and The GuruGanesha Band. The couple fell in love playing meditation music together at an Indian ashram and have been sharing their love of that music with eclectic audiences across the globe ever since. For Premal, who was raised in the mystical traditions of the East, the spaces between the sounds are just as important as the music itself. “Music is nourishment, but then you have to give yourself time to take it in so you can reap its benefits,” she observes. Manose, a bamboo flute virtuoso from Nepal, is also featured on the couple’s latest release, A Deeper Light. “If ever we were to doubt that we are supported by the divine, we just have to turn around and look to see who is with us,” says Miten. “Manose is a gift from God. Just wait until you hear it all.” Location: Tribeca Performing Arts Center, 199 Chambers St, New York, NY. For ticket starting at $30, visit BrightStarEvents.net. Holistic Healing with the Edgar Cayce Remedies By Jack Rosen, Edgar Cayce Health Care Educator
The focus this month is arthritis, both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, and treatments given by Edgar Cayce to heal them. The Cayce approach to all illness was to bring the body back to its normal state—that of health. He knew that the body heals itself. “I have no question in my mind that Arthritis can be healed,” is a quote from the book Heal Arthritis, Physically-Mentally-Spiritually, by William A. McGarey, M.D., based upon Cayce concepts. The causes of arthritis as researched from the Cayce readings were: (physical) poor assimilation and elimination; impaired circulation, glandular malfunction, previous treatments, spinal subluxations, and injuries; but karma and attitude had much to do with one’s healing. Edgar Cayce did not recommend treatments for a disease, but for the whole person. In one reading, he told a person with arthritis: “Do as we have given, and we will bring the near normal conditions for this body. Be persistent, but be consistent with the applications—also don’t expect the results in one treatment! For it has been many seasons coming on!” —Cayce reading 5503-1 The best part of Cayce’s remedies for arthritis is that they involve no drugs. The treatments recommended most frequently were: Atomidine, Epsom salts baths, colonics, massages, spinal adjustments, diet, and castor oil packs. Apple cider vinegar and salt packs and Cayce’s Violet Ray electrical appliance also appeared in specific readings. Over the years, I have seen many people helped by the Cayce Remedies. A friend of mine used to send six bottles of Egyptian Oil to a relative with arthritis in Germany every Christmas. Another friend used a cotton glove soaked in castor oil with a heating pad placed around it to fully heal a relative’s hand that was severely crippled from arthritis. General outline for the treatment of arthritis from Dr. McGarey’s book Heal Arthritis: DIET - The blood system was to be kept alkaline by a diet accenting vegetables and fruits. It includes fish, fowl or lamb, but no red meat or fried foods; and eight glasses of water a day. MASSAGE - Peanut oil was always recommended. This was combined with other aromatic oils to make a massage oil called Egyptian Oil (this formula is also available as Ortho). EPSOM SALTS BATHS - 20 lbs. of Epsom salts to 50 gallons of water.
COLONICS - Every 10 days for the first two months, then once a month. SPINAL ADJUSTMENTS - Improves the nerve supply to the muscles, tendons and affected organs. CASTOR OIL PACKS - The pack is placed over the area of the liver and abdomen to help the body eliminate systemic toxins and restore healthful functioning. A pack made to fit can also be placed directly on the affected area. Always apply heat. ATOMIDINE - A patented iodine solution that Edgar Cayce said would balance and cleanse the glandular system and make the blood alkaline. For details, go to www.edgarcayce.org to Holistic Health/ Cayce Health Database for Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis. For a video on how to make a castor oil pack, go to www.edgarcaycenyc.org to Resources/Video. Lyme Disease
“The Great Mimicker”
Dr. Howard Robins
A
re you suffering with symptoms of an illness that doesn’t seem to respond to any normal treatment? Maybe, just maybe, you are suffering from the “great mimicker”, Lyme disease. Even if you know you have it but believe you can’t get rid of it, don’t give up hope! Read on.
The Cause Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in the Northern Hemisphere. Borrelia burgdorferi is the main cause of Lyme disease in North America, though up to five co-infections are often present. The infection is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks. The ticks are extremely small and often fall off the body after feeding, thus masking the fact that you’ve been bitten.
The Symptoms and the Difficulty in Diagnosis Early symptoms may include fever, headache, fatigue, depression, and a characteristic circular skin rash, which has a “bulls-eye” (target-like), appearance. Patients often experience flu-like symptoms, such as headache, muscle soreness, fever, and malaise, which can also confuse early diagnosis. Unfortunately, left untreated, symptoms may involve the joints, heart, and central nervous system. The disease can affect multiple body systems at the same time and produce a wide range of symptoms. Not all patients with Lyme disease will have all symptoms, and many of the symptoms are not specific to Lyme disease, but can occur with other diseases as well, also making it difficult to diagnose. Also, blood testing frequently shows false negative testing or indeterminate results, causing doctors to delay diagnosis and treatment until it’s too late to easily kill the infections. Every part of the body can be affected. Various acute neurological problems including facial palsy, which is the loss of muscle tone on one or both sides of the face, as well as meningitis, which involves severe headaches, neck stiffness, and sensitivity to light are common in untreated cases. Nerve inflammation causes shooting pains that may interfere with sleep, as well as abnormal skin sensations. The late stage is where the infection has fully spread throughout the body. A polyneuropathy that involves shooting pains, numbness, and tingling in the hands or feet may develop. A neurologic syndrome called Lyme encephalopathy is associated with subtle cognitive problems, such as difficulties with concentration and short-term memory often accompanied by profound fatigue. In some cases Lyme disease kills.
The Answer In many but not all cases, antibiotics may eliminate the infection and its symptoms, especially if the illness is treated early. Unfortunately, even when caught early, antibiotics don’t always work. Over the past 22 years intravenous medical ozone has been safely and effectively used to destroy and eliminate Lyme disease, even in late stage infections. Often when all hope is gone, even after years of suffering medical ozone has proven successful. Usually in just a few weeks symptoms begin to diminish offering hope and finally giving relief. Intravenous medical ozone when it enters the body attacks and kills all Lyme disease causing bacteria. It does it safely, virtually with no adverse reactions. In addition it destroys all unwanted viruses, fungus, yeast, mold, harmful free radicles and toxins, thus cleansing your body and boosting your own natural immune system. A You can learn more about intravenous medical ozone at www.ozoneuniversity.com as well as buying a copy of the award winning DVD “Ozone Therapy: The Miracle Medicine” by Dr. Gary Null at www.garynull.com which contains testimonials from Lyme patients as too medical ozone’s effectiveness. Protein for Breakfast Curbs Food Cravings
S
kipping breakfast or eating sugary breakfast breads and cereals sets us up for increased appetite all day long, while protein-rich food effectively satiates us, according to a recent University of Missouri-Columbia study. Subjects were 20 overweight young women, ages 18 to 20, divided into three groups: those that skipped breakfast, ate cereal, or enjoyed a 350-calorie, high-protein breakfast of eggs and lean meat. Researchers tracking brain function concluded that those eating the high-protein breakfast were better able to control their eating throughout the day and evening. For people that don’t currently eat breakfast, lead researcher Heather Leidy, Ph.D., an assistant professor of nutrition and exercise physiology, says it only takes about three days to acclimate the body. Leidy suggests first trying plain Greek yogurt, cottage cheese or egg or meat burritos. Aim for 35 grams of protein in the morning for all-day control of food cravings. Antibacterials May Make Kids Allergy-Prone
A
dults’ obsession with antibacterial soaps, toothpastes and other personal care products may be making our children more prone to many allergies, according to research from the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, in Baltimore, Maryland. While not the direct cause, researchers say such products may impair the development of children’s immune systems. In a study of 860 children between the ages of 6 and 18, researchers found elevated levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in children from households where these products were used. IgEs increase when exposed to allergy-causing substances like pollen, pet dander and certain foods. Urine levels of triclosan, an antibacterial agent used in soaps, mouthwash and toothpaste, provided the strongest link to increased IgE levels and increased allergy risk. Parabens, preservatives with antimicrobial properties commonly found in shampoos, conditioners, lotions and body washes, were strongly associated with allergies to pollen and pet dander. These results confirm the “hygiene hypothesis” that society’s focus on cleanliness has actually prevented children from getting dirty and developing strong immune systems that are regularly challenged and strengthened by pathogens, say researchers.
Hair to Dye For
T
hree-quarters of American women are interested in changing their hair color, particularly to cover gray, according to a Clairol study. But other studies show they should be wary of most traditional hair dyes and consider natural alternatives. A study from the University of Southern California published in the International Journal of Cancer, for example, identified women using permanent hair dyes at least once a month to be at the highest risk for bladder cancer. As early as 2007, the European Union banned 22 potentially dangerous chemicals in cosmetic and body care products, including hair dyes. In the journal Materials last year, British researchers warned of the increased cancer risk from toxic chemicals called secondary amines, found in European- and U.S.-manufactured permanent hair dyes, because they remain on the hair for extended periods long after application and can penetrate skin. Meanwhile, increasing demand by consumers for safer products has expanded the market for natural hair dyes containing henna, oils and extracts from berries and other fruits, plus vegetables. Many are now available at pharmacies, organic salons and online, including do-it-yourself recipes.

Approaching Hair Beauty Organically Not long ago, organic or natural was almost unheard of for cosmetic companies. A more chemical approach was always the way to do business. However, as consumers educated themselves and become more conscious, companies are being pushed in becoming more transparent with the ingredients they use. It has become a trend for people to know what they are putting into and onto their bodies. As the era of hair products is evolving, consumers are demanding more sustainable products and services.

Fair Trade Comes to Retail Clothing The revolution that started in food is expanding to clothing: origins matter. With fair trade coffee and organic fruit now standard on grocery shelves, consumers concerned with industry working conditions, environmental issues and outsourcing are now demanding similar accountability for their T-shirts. As a result, some retailers have started supplying information about how and where their products are made. “There’s real demand for sweat-free products,” observes Ian Robinson, Ph.D., a lecturer and research scientist at the University of Michigan who studies labor issues. “Consumers don’t have the information they need, and they do care.” The New York Times reported that a recent factory collapse in Bangladesh might play a part in changing that. Loblaw Companies Limited, the parent company of Joe Fresh, which produced clothing there, has vowed to audit factories more aggressively and compensate the victims’ families. “The apparel industry can be a force for good,” vows Galen G. Weston, Loblaw’s chairman.

The health and beauty aisle at Indian grocery stores includes several natural products in wide use among Indian women. Here are some popular ones available in America. Henna: Women mix powder from the henna plant with water to use as a natural hair dye and conditioner. Coconut oil: Indian women regularly massage a natural oil into their scalp before washing to keep their hair healthy and prevent the scalp from drying out and itching. “Coconut oil helps to grow hair long,” advises Bibya Malik, owner of Bibya Hair Design, a salon chain in Chicago. “It is probably the most widely used hair oil in the Indian subcontinent; amla oil, jasmine oil and other herbal oils are used, as well.” Rosewater: Most often used as a skin toner, some women also like to spray rosewater on their face as a refresher. Rosewater has a long history as a fragrance and as a flavoring in dessert recipes. Ubtan: This mixture of turmeric, gram (chickpea) flour and herbs is combined with milk or water as a beauty treatment. Indian brides scrub their skin with it in the days prior to their wedding. cise can be a powerful gateway to the spiritual,” observes Pierrat, the founder of Soul Sweat, a highly choreographed, spiritually charged dance workout. Twenty years after the yoga craze introduced Westerners to the possibility that the two seemingly incongruous goals could be intertwined, the spirituality-fitness link has spread well beyond the yoga mat. It has spawned fusions ranging from Body Gospel, a Christian workout tape, and Jewish Yoga classes to triathlon programs rooted in Native American teachings and Buddhismbased running meditation workshops. In addition, creative instructors have been fusing body/mind/spirit classics like yoga and Pilates with hardcore cardio disciplines like spinning and boxing. Half of all U.S. fitness clubs now offer mind/body programming, according to the IDEA Health & Fitness Association, and the portion of classes dedicated to “mind/spirit” versus just “body” is on the rise. “The newer programming is balanced 50-50, rather than the 80-20 body-mind split of the past,” estimates Sandy Todd Webster, editor in chief of IDEA’s publications. At a time when, according to the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, the number of people that identify with “no organized religion” continues to grow (topping one-fifth of Americans and one-third of U.S. adults under 30), more people than ever are exploring exercise as a path to both flatter abs and deeper self-discovery. “We have spent so long focusing on the mind and the brain… but that is not the whole story,” says Pierrat. “The somatic, or physical, expression of spirituality is the future.”
In the Zone
The notion that intense dancing or a long run could spark what feels like a spiritual awakening makes sense to Philadelphia-based research neuroscientist and physician Andrew Newberg, author of How God Changes Your Brain. A pioneer in the field of integrative “neurotheology”, he has for years used brain imaging technologies to study the impact religious or spiritual
“God has created us with a body. Why aren’t we praying with our body?” ~ Marcus Freed practices like deep meditation, intense prayer and speaking in tongues have on the brain. Exercise, he says, provides many of the same effects. In addition to prompting a surge of feel-good endorphins, a highly strenuous workout is one of the few activities that can lead to simultaneous activation of both sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (calming) nervous system reactions. “Normally, when one of these is active, the other one shuts down, but when people drive one or the other to a very heightened level of activity, there is some evidence that the other turns on too,” explains Newberg. That intense dual firing can paradoxically lead to an interruption in sensory information traveling to areas of the brain that control our sense of ourselves at any moment. “Not only do you have this great feeling of energy and calmness, but you tend to lose your sense of space and time,” he notes. Newberg’s own research also suggests that when people “surrender” themselves in a spiritual practice, the frontal lobe (the practical part of the brain that keeps our thoughts in check) quiets. He speculates that something similar may happen in the midst of, say, a marathon or intense dance, enabling out of the ordinary thoughts and feelings to surface. “It can allow for creativity—a blending of different, more
intuitive ideas in ways you don’t normally mix things,” comments Newberg. So, is exercise able to only make us feel like we’re having a mystical experience, or is it somehow actually opening a channel to the divine? Newberg declines to go there, commenting that a brain scan tells what’s going on in the brain, not in the soul. Yet he has no doubt the two are inextricably linked. He says, “There are many well-known examples of intense experiences, like Sufi dancing, generating spiritual experiences for people.”
Whole-Being Workouts
Marcus Freed is one of those people. He grew up in a traditional Jewish family in London, England, and attended a rabbinical seminary in Israel. Still, he felt that something was missing in his spiritual life. “I thought, ‘God has created us with a body. Why aren’t we praying with our body?’” Freed says that Biblical text often references the body: King David, in the Book of Psalms, says, “Let all my bones praise the creator.” The Jewish Talmud refers to a rabbi that “stretched his spine with a prayer of gratitude.” Yet, Freed observes, the physical elements of daily spiritual practice have been largely forgotten over the centuries. When he discovered yoga, it filled a gap for him. “I found a way to draw
upon this incredible spiritual literature but ground it in the body, so that experience is not just in the head, but also in the heart.” Thus, Freed founded Bibliyoga, which launches each class with a Hebrew or Kabbalistic teaching, followed by poses that incorporate its themes, as reflected in his book, The Kosher Sutras: The Jewish Way in Yoga and Meditation. The practice, now taught in cities around the United States and Europe, has prompted the birth of similarly religion-infused classes, including Christ Yoga, and the Jewish Yoga Network. “A lot of people separate things, saying they’ll get their spirituality from one place and their exercise from somewhere else,” says Freed. “I think they are missing out.”
Mindful Sports
The spirituality-exercise link likewise resonates through other traditionally solo pursuits such as triathlon activities and running, in which many athletes say a more mindful approach to training has infused their sport with more meaning, and in some cases, improved their performances. Ironman Marty Kibiloski, formerly a competitive marathoner and road racer, led what he terms a “high achievement, low contentment” life for years, measuring his self-worth by timed results that never quite satisfied him. In 2006, he attended a Running with the Mind of Meditation three-day workshop, based on Rinpoche Sakyong Mipham’s book of the same name. The

“Mobile meditation… trains you to have your mind be still when your body is active, which is how you are in everyday life.” ~ Marty Kibiloski retreat combined with his newfound interest in Buddhism, completely redefined running for him. Kibiloski prefers to steer clear of the word “spiritual” (which he sees as somewhat ambiguous) when describing what he now experiences when running. Instead, he frames it as a vehicle for selfdiscovery, a mobile meditation that provides the intense focus and freedom from distraction that enables him to “awaken to how things really are.” He now leads the retreat that proved pivotal for him, drawing more than 100 runners each Labor Day weekend to the Shambhala Mountain Center, in Red Feather Lakes, Colorado. Participants learn to focus on the cadence of their footfalls, their breathing and their surroundings to, as he puts it, “move meditation beyond the cushion.” He remarks, “It trains you to have your mind be still when your body is active,

which is how you are in everyday life.” Triathlete Mark Allen credits his work with Brant Secunda, a shaman and teacher in the Huichol Indian tradition of Mexico, for enabling him to overcome negative self-talk and physical stresses and go on to win the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, six times in the late 1980s and early 90s. He notes, “In every one of my physical workouts, I also focused on training the spiritual aspect, so that when I got that chatter in my head, saying, ‘This is too hard’ or ‘I want to quit,’ I could go to a quiet place, rather than a negative one.” Based on their book, Fit Soul, Fit Body: Nine Keys to a Healthier, Happier You, the pair conduct workshops around the country on how to strengthen both soul and body by intertwining both. “Some people think you are only spiritual when you are praying, but when you are mov-

Daily Choices We Make Determine the Well-Being of Our Planet.
The Restorative Qualities of Yoga Nidra
Every night when we go to sleep, we transition from waking to dreaming to deep sleep where we naturally and progressively disengage from thoughts. In deep, dreamless sleep all of our problems disappear. In that profound state of rest, the body is able to deeply restore itself. Intuitively we know this to be true. This is why a doctor will tell us to get plenty of rest when we are sick. That is because the body, when unimpeded by the machinations of the mind, is in the best possible position to heal and restore itself. In addition to optimally restoring the body, sleep allows us to take a step back from the thoughts and emotions that wreak havoc on the nervous system all day long. Interestingly, this is one thing meditation is intended to do; create a gap between ourselves and our thoughts so that we can choose not to be pushed around by them. The yogis of old, recognizing the deeply restorative and meditative qualities that sleep naturally engenders, created an
ancient practice called yogic sleep or yoga nidra. Like sleeping, it is usually practiced lying down. Unlike sleep, it profoundly relaxes the body and quiets the mind while conscious. Comprised of a series of techniques which vary from session to session, a skilled facilitator can formulate a yoga nidra experience that is tailored to a variety of needs ranging from health issues such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease and insomnia to pain management, posttraumatic stress disorder, depression and addiction. These techniques are structured to systematically take the practitioner to alpha and theta brain wave states that relieve a wide variety of mental and physical ailments.
from IBS to angina. Yoga nidra creates greater mental clarity, problem-solving ability and can be used to improve sports performance and recovery. Numerous studies suggest that yoga nidra is a powerful technique to optimize mental and physical health. It doesn’t require great skill or physical capability and can be used as an adjunct to other healing modalities and treatments. Kamini Desai, PhD, is a leading authority in the field of yoga nidra. She will be conducting a Yoga Nidra training in Nyack, NY at Birchwood Center. For more details visit BirchwoodCenter.com/yoganidra. To learn more about Kamini Desai, visit KaminiDesai.com. See ad, page 18.

IS YOUR DOPAMINE BEING HIJACKED? by Paul Huljich
Practice moderation. Don’t allow your dopamine to be hijacked.
W
hen most people think of a hijacking, they often picture a person wearing a mask and waving a gun, who takes control of a plane, train or automobile. And although a person can hijack a car for a variety of reasons, it mostly boils down to needing to escape. In this regard, hijacking is a means to an end; innocent victims are ripped from their normal lives by the violent intrusion, wants and goals of the hijacker. The word “addiction” is derived from a Latin term for “enslaved by” or “bound to.” Anyone who has struggled (or known someone else who has) with an addiction can understand why. Addiction is a persistent, compulsive dependence on a habit or substance. There are two types of addictions: substance addictions (for example, alcoholism, drug abuse, and smoking); and process addictions (for example, gambling, spending, shopping, eating, and sexual activity) says Paul Huljich in his latest book Stress Pandemic. Dopamine is a neurochemical that helps control the brain’s reward and pleasure centers. Dopamine is crucial for learning adaptive behaviors however addictive habits exploit this normal mechanism by flooding the brain with dopamine. Dopamine enables us not only to see rewards, but to take action to move toward them. In the “hijacked” view of addiction, the brain is the innocent victim of certain substances — alcohol, cocaine, nicotine or heroin, for example — as well as certain behaviors like eating, gambling or sexual activity. The drugs or the dopamine produced by the behaviors overpower and redirect the brain’s normal responses, and thus take control of (hijack) it. For addicted people, that martini, or cigarette is the weapon-wielding hijacker who is going to compel certain behaviors. 26
New York City Edition
To do this, drugs like alcohol and cocaine and behaviors like gambling light up the brain’s pleasure circuitry, often bringing a burst of euphoria. We tend to want to maximize pleasure; tend to do things that bring more of it. We also tend to chase it when it subsides, hoping to recreate the same level of pleasure we have experienced in the past. It is not uncommon to hear addicts talking about wanting to experience the euphoria of a first high. Often they never reach it, but keep trying. All of this lends credence to the metaphor of the brain being hijacked. The brain registers all pleasures in the same way, whether they originate with drugs, money, sex or food. In the brain, pleasure has a distinct moniker: the release of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens, it is the brain’s pleasure center. All drugs of abuse, from nicotine to cocaine, release a tidal wave of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens. The likelihood that the use of a drug or participation in any reoccurring rewarding activity will lead to addiction is directly linked to three factors: speed, intensity and reliability of the dopamine release. Even taking the same drug through different methods of administration can influence how likely it is to lead to addiction. Smoking a drug or injecting it intravenously, as opposed to swallowing it as a pill, for example, generally produces a faster, stronger dopamine signal and is more likely to lead to drug misuse. Repeated exposure to an addictive substance or behavior causes nerve cells in the nucleus accumbens and the prefrontal cortex (the area of the brain involved in planning and executing tasks) to communicate to us the source of what is causing us pleasure; that is, this process provokes us to take action to seek out the source of pleasure. In nature, rewards na-newyorkcity.com
usually come only with time and effort. Addictive drugs and behaviors provide a shortcut, flooding the brain with dopamine and other neurochemicals. Our brains do not have an easy way to withstand the allure and cause of pleasure, no matter how short-term that pleasure lasts or the long-term damage many of these pleasures may cause over time. Addictive drugs, for example, can release two to 10 times the amount of dopamine that natural rewards do, and they do it more quickly and more reliably. In a person who becomes addicted, brain receptors become overwhelmed. The brain responds by producing less dopamine or eliminating dopamine receptors — an adaptation similar to turning the volume down on a loudspeaker when noise becomes too loud. As a result of these adaptations, people build up a tolerance to such habits and drugs and the dopamine produced has less impact on the brain’s reward center. As a result, they have to take more of the drug or engage in the habits producing dopamine more in order to obtain the same dopamine “high.” Addiction ensues, and those who fall addicted become essentially hijacked by the drug or habit controlling them through their dopamine level; that is, addiction falls in line with the brain’s expectations. According to Adam Kepecs, a neuroscientist at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, “drugs basically “hijack” the brain’s normal computational enjoyment and reward mechanisms.” Paul Huljich is the author of "Stress Pandemic: The Lifestyle Solution".
