Hey, I’m Dr. Diane!

Fall

is here and it’s time for everything pumpkin, apples, cider, and spices! Even here in SWFL where it’s still wonderfully warm and sunny, I love all of the fall flavors and scents. And the Halloween (my favorite holiday) decorations down here rival some of the best I’ve seen in New England! This month we have some great articles on how to understand the risks and effects of mold toxicity, managing stress and anxiety, and natural treatments for cancer. Considering stress is a major factor for disease progression and why we get sick, there are some great tips and insights in this issue to help you heal your body and stay healthy this winter. Since I’ve been doing more meditating, I’ve found that one of the ways to stay healthy is to focus daily on what I’m grateful for—and with Thanksgiving around the corner, it couldn’t be a more appropriate time.

Practicing gratitude is a fundamental component of the law of attraction and learning how to manifest and create your ideal life. The theory is that to bring what you want into your life, you have to be grateful for what you already have, and you must also give thanks for what you receive in the future. This enables a constant flow of positive energy into and out of your life. If you are not thankful for what you receive, it will block the flow and you will have a difficult time attracting what you want.

Whether or not you believe in the law of attraction, the act of practicing gratitude makes us better people. Take a minute to see how you feel after the next time you thank someone for something. Doesn’t it give you a nice, warm feeling? And check in with how you feel when you should have said thank you for something and didn’t. Not as nice a feeling, right?

something. Doesn’t it give you a nice, warm feeling? And check in with how you feel when you should have said thank you

Think of all the opportunities you have to show gratitude every day:

• You can thank your partner for getting up early with the kids so you can sleep in.

• You can thank your kids for cleaning up their room.

• You can show gratitude to your assistant for helping you run a successful business every day.

• You can thank the server who waits on you for dinner.

• You can show gratitude to the person who bags your groceries at the market.

• You can thank your kids for cleaning up their room. important

Practicing the fine art of gratitude is not only among our most important positive emotions, but one that links directly to physical and mental well-being. There is a special kind of magic in gratitude, for it raises our consciousness, boosts our energy, and enhances our self-worth.

Wishing you health and happiness,

Dr. Berman’s 4 Keys to Aging

Gracefully, Avoiding Pain Pills and Surgery!

If you’ve ever wanted to know what you should focus on every day to give you the best chance at adding life to your years, not years to your life, make sure you attempt at least two of these four nuggets of gold every single day. I promise—it won’t take you more than a couple of minutes to complete, and your 5–10-yearsfrom-now self will thank you!

1. Make sure you can stand on one leg (both sides individually) for 60 seconds without using your hands for balance. This is important because it keeps your proprioceptive system active. Proprioception is the main thing that helps you keep your balance when walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night with low lighting.

2. Squat every day! No, you don’t have to do air squats and weighted squats. You can simply control your descent into a chair and then get out of the chair without using momentum or your hands. Think about how often you get in and out of a chair, on and off the commode, or in and out of your car. If you intentionally use muscles and not momentum, you can count these as squats. If you do this every day, there will never be a day you can’t get out of a chair!

3. In the standing position, bend over and touch your toes. Even if you can’t or never could touch your toes, at least try to get as low as possible every day to help maintain, or even gain, a healthy balance of flexibility. This should also be done every day.

4. Get down on the ground and back up again without using your hands. If this scares you, you better start working on it now!

If you do this at least once every single day, there will never be a day you can’t do it!

Dr. Jake Berman, PT, DPT, is a physical therapist and the owner of Berman Physical Therapy, where they focus on treating the problem causing your symptoms (pain) to help you avoid taking pain pills and dangerous surgeries. Functional Medicine Approach to Reversing Type 2 Diabetes

Itcan often feel like you’re in an assembly line when moving through the healthcare system. To receive better coverage, your doctor may need to be on the Medicare or insurance company’s list. If you need medication, it needs to fit in the formulary that’s been approved.

You can get caught up in a medication change when insurance decides it’s not meeting their bottom line.

Your doctor is so busy you get a few minutes to talk, and you forget half of the questions you wanted to ask.

As a patient, where do you fit in?

I stepped away from that system to heal and reverse my diabetes. That’s when I became healthy and stopped all medication and insulin. With diabetes, there are several conditions in play. Medication is not designed to reverse any of them.

Functional medicine is a term that lets you know you can partner with a team of healthcare professionals who will work to get to the root of your illness and set you on a wellness journey.

To get to the root of the problem, you need answers and then targeted guidance. It includes digestive health because the inability to absorb vital nutrients will keep you struggling with diabetes. Gain clarity on hormones, inflammation, and insulin levels. You may see “normal” on your lab test; it may not be optimal for you.

Reverse My Diabetes is transforming into CuraVida Wellness Solutions, a virtual wellness center where we get to the root of your problem in type 2 diabetes, digestive health, weight loss, and more.

Discover the Incredible Tastes of Grand Central Honey

Season here in Florida not only signals the impending return of the snowbirds but it also heralds the arrival of seasonal allergies. Sneezing, runny noses, and teary eyes are just some of the dreaded symptoms many of us endure.

SWFL’s warm temperatures year-round are directly tied to the longevity of allergy season, making it more like “allergy year.” Right now, ragweed pollen, oak, pine, and other weeds’ pollen are big contributors to allergy agony.

We, of course, recommend you consult a professional to diagnose and treat your specific symptoms, but including local honey (within a roughly 100–300-mile radius) as a part of your daily routine may help to give you some relief. There are those who believe wholeheartedly in the “local honey theory,” but others are doubters due to a lack of formal clinical trials. Much of the evidence is anecdotal. However, here at Grand Central Honey, we have many repeat customers who tell us that local honey makes their suffering a bit more tolerable.

We stock several local honeys from small family apiaries, as well as many other artisan honeys from all over the world. Stop by and sample the locals and the others in our carefully curated collection. All are raw and unadulterated. Each has its own personality and taste (much like wine), and we want to make sure that you love the ones you choose.

Here’s to an endurable fall allergy season!

Precision Robotics Muscular Therapy Is Now Naples Robotic Pain Relief

Big news in robotic therapy! “We decided to make this change to better convey what this technology is capable of,” explains owner Theresa Edmunds. “With this technology being new to the area and so different than any other type of treatment, we want people to understand how we can help. Most people come to us because they are having pain. We are about pain resolution and correcting the underlying problem.”

This non-invasive technology uses a robotic arm and computerized module to provide gentle, static pressure and vibration, which lengthens tight muscles, resulting in pain resolution. “No amount of manual pressure can lengthen contracted muscles,” Edmunds explains. “When large muscles are short and tight, they put pressure on bones, joints, and nerves, resulting in pain.”

With different placements for the robotic arm, back, hip, shoulder, neck, and knee pain, as well as carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, and plantar fasciitis, can be alleviated. “Many clients come to us after they have tried “everything.” It’s very rewarding to help people feel better and get back to the activities they enjoy.”

“In addition to people who have been in pain for months or even years, we also treat a lot of golfers as well as tennis and pickleball players,” says Edmunds. Robotic muscle treatments can also optimize athletic performance and reduce the risk of injury by increasing flexibility and balance. This technology is complementary to PT, massage, and chiropractic treatments and can even make these treatments more effective. As muscles are released and lengthened, range of motion increases and posture can improve.

In recognition of their “fresh start,” Naples Robotic Pain Relief is offering an initial visit for $79, including a free consultation through the end of the year. Learn more at www.naplesroboticpainrelief.com. Find out what they do and how they can help relieve your pain! Contact them today at 239.778.6842.

We o er a complimentary consultation so clients can learn more about this revolutionary technology. We learn about your condition, and you discover whether this therapy can help you. You truly have nothing to lose—except your pain. Theresa Edmunds is a Certified Health Coach and co-owner of Naples Robotics Pain Relief. She is passionate about helping people feel better. Lisa Mack, Owner of Lisa’s Thermography and Wellness

My name is Lisa Mack, owner of Lisa’s Thermography and Wellness for 11 years. I am also a Certified Clinical Thermographer and Holistic Health Coach. I have always had a passion for holistic health and helping others in their health journey.

In the midst of following my passions, I discovered thermography and found it to be an amazing tool to help people identify their health issues before they become a problem.

Lisa’s Thermography and Wellness is a mobile business, which allows me to serve many different areas in several states. I am currently serving in many locations in Florida, including BODYBAR PILATES in Osprey, Therapeutic Wellness Center in Punta Gorda, and Lotus Blossom Clinic in Fort Myers.

Thermography sees inflammation within the body, which is oftentimes the very first sign of a potential health problem. Thermography provides all women with an accurate representation of their body’s current state and is a roadmap to understanding their journey to better health. More specifically, a woman’s thermogram can give insight on the current state of their breast health and potential hormone imbalances. Additionally, thermograms can see a woman’s metabolic processes and body functions, offering new insight into the health of your body—in many cases, long before you feel any symptoms or before a specific test is able to diagnose an actual disease. The results can help in the prevention of disease by monitoring breast health, cardiovascular health, musculoskeletal disorders, sinus and allergies, thyroid health, digestive disorders, visceral health, dental pathologies, nerve damage, and inflammation. Simply put, thermography can see whether your body is asking for extra help.

Invisible Problem, Invisible Solution!

Susie Bagwell, Founder, I Love Oils, Inc.

Sometimesthe challenges we face are the results of unknown, invisible enemies. The invisible microbes in our gut wage war on invaders and we never really see it. Studies continue to show that the more we take care of our gut health, the healthier we become!

Your internal microbiome works like an invisible organ. It has an incredibly diverse ecosystem that is a key to wellness. The body's natural aging process can disrupt the microbiome—along with an unbalanced diet, poor exercise, inadequate sleep, and stressful lifestyle. Improving our wellness routine with supplementation can help restore this microbiome.

doTERRA’s new PB Restore ProBiome Complex is an incredible formulation of thirty pre-, pro-, and post-biotics that help bring back microbial diversity and balance for optimal microbiome health and overall wellness. The product contains 18 billion colony-forming units of good bacteria consisting of twenty-four active cultures—specially selected strains from twenty-two species—for incredible microbial diversity. The post-biotic provides additional health benefits.

The unique supplement features a dual-chamber, time-release delivery system to support the body throughout the day. It may aid in digestive comfort, micronutrient synthesis, and gut barrier integrity and promote a healthy metabolism. This activity may, in turn, support skin health, respiratory health, and the immune system. One capsule a day with plenty of water may be all you need to make your invisible challenges a thing of the past.

10 ESSENTIAL Naples FALL 2023 SPOTLIGHT

Hey, Honey!

The Awesome Power of the Tiny Honeybee

In February, I opened a one-of-a-kind, bee- and honey-centric boutique in Naples named Grand Central Honey. Everything in the store is dedicated to the amazing contributions honeybees make to our world by pollinating our food sources—over one-third of what we eat is dependent on the work of these busy (female!) pollinators.

We have discovered that a lot of people have never experienced the taste of true, raw, pure honey, perhaps only trying one or two from a grocery store, which may have been heated, adulterated, or otherwise processed. There is a huge problem with this type of “fake” honey being transshipped by China through other countries… It is a multi-million-dollar problem when it ends up here on grocers’ shelves because of its ridiculously low wholesale price, impacting artisan apiaries’ opportunities to break into the retail world.

A Unique Boutique

Grand Central Honey vets each brand we carry to ensure our customers are buying pure honey. We offer our visitors the opportunity to taste any honey, sauce, and other products at our Bee Bar. There is such a difference in taste, and people are always very pleasantly surprised.

We showcase and sell over thirty-five brands and well over one hundred flavors and infusions of artisan raw, pure, unadulterated honey from beekeepers around the world, as well as those native to regions of the U.S. and from local farms. While there are other stores thatcenter on honey, most strictly market one beekeeper’s brand or varietal of honey. There are also other retailers that have a wide selection, but the customer cannot taste it before buying.

Tasting honey can be exciting, too! Producers can infuse the honey with a wide variety of delicious flavors, such as bourbon, chocolate, cinnamon, and Carolina reaper peppers (yikes!), and it is fun to discover the varietalsbased on the terroir—the region and environment—of the blossoms the bees pollinate. It is strikingly similar to tasting fine wines.

What’s in a Name?

I took Grand Central Honey’s name from Grand Central Terminal—a wide variety of people in the station are there from all over the world, just like our products. We have an ever-changing selection of honeys, so the store is never static. That is how we encourage ourguests to keep expanding their honey horizons. We also emphasize the bountiful benefits of honey, and we carry honey tonics and salves that are frequently recommended by organic and other practitioners for healing, wound care, treatment of allergies, and health maintenance.

We also carry bee- and honey-centric gifts, candles, books, skincare products, pet items and treats, Christmas ornaments, tonics, skincare, fragrances, and jewelry, among other bee delights! People walk in and are shocked to see the narrow yet deep singularity of our merchandise—there is nothing here that is not related to bees or honey.

There is a relaxing, friendly, and warm vibe that makes people comfortable and ready to have a great interactive experience. In addition to The Bee Bar, where we serve mead (honey wine) and do honey tasting, we have a virtual hive and a selfie room where guests can take photos of themselves in front of a neon crown and wings, thus making themselves queen—or king—bees!

I invite you to visit Grand Central Honey and experience a truly interactive, informative, and delicious experiencewith some fun tastings. We are located in Naples at 4444 Tamiami Trail N., Suite 2, and open 11 am to around 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday. Hope to see you soon!

Please check out our website for more info, in addition to many photos of the store: http://grandcentralhoney.com.

We also are very active on Instagram and Facebook.

Do You Know Your RealAge®?

Are you as young (or as old) as you feel? Blue Zones Project-Southwest Florida invites community members 18+ years old across Collier County, Bonita Springs, and Estero to find out their “real age” by taking the RealAge® Test. It is free and open to the public and available at southwestflorida.bluezonesproject.com/realage-test.

Blue Zones Project Invites SWFL Residents to Participate in Community Well-Being Assessment

Taken by more than 45 million people to date, the scientifically based survey reveals the true age of the body you’re living in compared to your biological age—the first step toward improving overall health and well-being. To get started, the RealAge test offers over 100 questions based on well-being factors such as nutrition, physical activity, sleep, existing medical conditions, and stress that can contribute to a person’s longevity.

Upon completing the assessment, RealAge provides an immediate estimate of the body’s age and offers helpful tools on how to implement positive changes that benefit both the individual and the community. The comprehensive health risk assessment was developed by Sharecare and has been clinically validated to be more predictive of mortality than the Framingham Heart Study and chronological age.

“My calendar age is 42 years and 8 months, but my RealAge is 36 years and 10 months,” says Blue Zones Project SWFL Executive Director Megan Greer. “We invite you to discover your RealAge and be a proactive part of our community’s journey to better health. The test is free and will give you actionable steps for your own personal health as well as elevate our community’s well-being together. This data is essential for us to address critical community needs and for us to continue the path of being the #1 healthiest county in Florida.”

The Blue Zones Project in Southwest Florida

Data collected from the survey is confidential and HIPAA compliant. Individual-level data stays private to the individual who completes the assessment. Only aggregate community data will be collected by the Blue Zones Project team. This information will be used to determine a baseline assessment for Southwest Florida that will influence future well-being programming for the community at large, as well as the Blue Zones Project initiative. Insights will also be benchmarked against results from Sharecare’s Community Well-Being Index to understand how Southwest Florida’s well-being compares with communities around the country.

This survey will be implemented regularly throughout the lifespan of the Blue Zones Project in Southwest Florida and help shape the understanding of the community’s collective well-being for years to come.

Brought to Southwest Florida through an innovative sponsorship with NCH, the Blue Zones Project is a community-by-community well-being improvement initiative designed to enable community members to live longer, happier lives with lower rates of chronic diseases and a higher quality of life.

Based on research on the world’s longest-lived communities by National Geographic Fellow and best-selling author Dan Buettner, Blue Zones Project is designed to make healthy choices easier through permanent changes in environment, policy, and social networks. By helping people live longer and better through environmental and behavioral change, communities can lower healthcare costs, improve productivity, and boost national recognition as a great place to live, work, and play.

Blue Zones Project is a well-being project that works with individuals, homeowners’ associations, faith-based organizations, restaurants, grocery stores, schools, and businesses in the community to help make healthy choices easier. We provide tips and tools to help people in Southwest Florida live longer, better lives. Connect with us: BZPSWFL.Eventbrite.com. Learn more: southwestflorida.bluezonesproject.com.

“We invite you to discover your RealAge and be a proactive part of our community’s journey to better health. The test is free and will give you actionable steps for your own personal health as well as elevate our community’s well-being together.”

Floating Does What? Really?!

Are you aware that over 40 million people in the United States are suffering from stress, depression, and anxiety?

Stressed? Anxious? Help Solve These— and More—with the Original “Chill Pill”

Coupled with your enriched health regime, floating in magnesium will greatly reduce your stress and anxiety levels. In oral form, it is almost impossible to absorb. The amount of magnesium your body requires to stay healthy and happy is much higher than we realize. Floating and intravenous applications are two methods that can be used to supply your body with the needed magnesium to keep your body and mind at their healthiest.

Magnesium is a vital nutrient that is deficient in more than 87% of our population. The current recommended daily allowance (RAD) for adults is between 320 mg and 420 mg daily, while the average U.S. intake is around 250 mg daily or less.

Magnesium deficiency can cause depression, behavioral disturbances, headaches, muscle cramps, seizures, autoimmune diseases, arrhythmia, organ failure, and irritability, to name just a few—many of which can be reversed or greatly reduced with magnesium intake repletion.

Stress and Ion Regulation

Ion regulation in our bodies is vital with respect to how muscles contract and how nerves send signals. In the brain, potassium and sodium balance each other. In the heart and other muscles, magnesium pulls much of the load. Magnesium is also involved in long-term memory formation.

The brain is very susceptible to stress, which causes us to use magnesium at an alarming rate. The inability to remember important data intensifies

one’s stress and makes us even more vulnerable. While acute stress affects memory in a reversible way, chronic stress can result in harmful changes in the brain.

Magnesium can suppress the brain’s ability to stimulate the release of the stress hormone, decrease the release of ACTH, and reduce the responsiveness of the adrenal glands ACTH. In addition, magnesium can act at the blood-brain barrier to prevent stress hormones from entering the brain. All these functions and more are why magnesium is the original “chill pill.”

But… What Is Floating?

When you float, you enter a sensory-reduced environment. The water temperature is the average skin temperature, 93.5 degrees, with limited lighting and no sound. Due to the large amount of magnesium in the water, gravity disappears. In other words, most of the sensory input you normally process is turned off, and the body goes into a deep state of relaxation.

There are many benefits from floating—too many to list here—but some of the major benefits include:

•Relieves stress and anxiety

• Alleviates chronic pain

•Supports athletic performance

•Enhances creativity and mindfulness

•Improves depth and duration of sleep

• Heightens the immune system

•Reduces effects of autoimmune diseases

•Relaxes muscles and accelerates recovery

• And more!

Does a Continuous Glucose Monitor Help Reverse Type 2 Diabetes?

You

may have seen a glucose sensor on the back of a person’s arm. The sensor, CGM (continuous glucose monitor), collects glucose information

24/7. The two most common devices are Freestyle Libre and Dexcom. Used properly, you can absolutely increase your chances of reversing type 2 diabetes. Today, we’ll review the Freestyle Libre by Abbott Labs.

You place the little round sensor on the back of your arm and leave it in place for two weeks. Amazingly, you can see detailed glucose information all day and night and easily share this with your coach and physician. Pretty nifty!

Libre Sensors

Abbott offers two types of sensors in their Libre product line:

• Freestyle Libre 14-Day: Kit includes one sensor, a glucose reader, and an optional, downloadable app.

• Activate the sensor using the reader or your smartphone. Once you activate a sensor, you must use the same device to scan for the two-week duration.

• Reader: Upload via a USB cord to your PC and to your Libre account.

• Scanning is required several times per day to keep your sensor active. Do not exceed eight hours without scanning.

• Freestyle Libre3: Kit includes 1 sensor and requires you to download the Libre3 app to your smartphone.

• Activate the sensor by using your phone. No additional scanning is required to keep it activated for the 14-day period.

Please note:

• A prescription is required to obtain a CGM, even when purchasing out of pocket.

• Medicare/insurance may cover some or all of the cost of the Libre 14-Day if you are prescribed insulin, whether slow or fast-acting. Or those with problematic hypoglycemia (which may be induced by certain diabetic medications).

• Libre3 is not covered at this time due to not having a dedicated reader. (Abbott is working to rectify this issue.)

CGMs do not read from blood. These devices draw information using algorithms from the interstitial fluid below the skin. When you stick your finger with a traditional monitor, your reading is from capillary blood. When your blood is drawn from

“If you need to make an out-ofpocket purchase for a CGM, it can be well worth it.

your arm, that is a venous draw. All three of these readings may be a bit different since they come by their information from different sources: interstitial fluid, capillary blood, and venous blood.

If you need to make an out-of-pocket purchase for a CGM, it can be well worth it. If you are in a prediabetic state, you can also be surprised by what you learn from a CGM. This reduces a lot of guesswork.

Now your readings are magically better, and you reversed your type 2 diabetes!

Well, not quite. There’s a little work to do…

The purpose of using a CGM is to see what you couldn’t previously see inside your body.

How to Be Successful

• Have a goal and a plan to improve or reverse your type 2 diabetes and maintain long-term success.

• Learn best practices to interpret your glucose readings. (This is where many do-it-yourselfers miss the mark for long-term success.)

• In the Reverse My Diabetes program, we use advanced insight testing. We identify the food, digestive health, mineral absorption, and metal toxins with customized lifestyle changes to drive success. (Ask us about the gold standard we use in hair analysis testing.)

Integrating technology using a CGM, advanced testing, and a personalized plan with consistent coaching will greatly increase your chances of reversing prediabetes or type 2 diabetes for enjoyable, long-term success.

Robotic Muscular Therapy: REAL Treatment for Sciatica Pain

Most people have heard of sciatica, and many have experienced this debilitating pain. However, not everyone understands its source. Sciatica is the term that refers to pain that travels along the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back through the hip, gluteus, and down the leg.

Pain can occur anywhere along the nerve pathway—it can be localized to the lower back but often follows a path to the gluteus and the back of the thigh and calf. Occasionally, numbness in the leg or foot or weakness in the leg can also result. Pain can also be felt in the hip or groin. Usually, only one side is affected at a time. This pain can be a mild ache or a sharp, shooting pain. Often, it is exacerbated by sitting or stooping for long periods. Coughing or sneezing can cause jolting pain.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes irritated. This same pain can be felt with dysfunction in the SI (sacroiliac) joint. The SI joint connects the iliac bone (pelvis) to the sacrum (the lowest part of the spine just above the tailbone). Both of these conditions can be very painful and prohibit normal daily activities.

One of the leading causes of this type of pain is the psoas (pronounced SO-as) muscle. The psoas muscle is the deepest muscle in our core and the only muscle that connects our legs to our torso.

The psoas connects to the lowest thoracic (midspine) vertebrae through the lumbar (low back)

vertebrae, through the hips, and attaches to the top of the femur. This integral muscle is responsible for many functions in the body and is one of the large muscles that can become shortened and contracted. This can be caused by many factors, such as sitting for long periods, excessive running and walking, or core exercises—even stress can cause this muscle to contract!

Once the psoas muscle is shortened, it can put considerable pressure on the spine and SI joint, which can cause compression and/or joint dysfunction. This can result in sciatica or SI joint pain.

What Is Robotic Muscular Therapy?

With other treatments, no amount of stretching or massage can effectively lengthen this muscle. However, an innovative therapy called Robotics Muscular Therapy can lengthen the body’s large muscles, including the psoas muscle. This non-invasive technology applies gentle, sustained pressure and vibration to a specific muscle, allowing contracted muscle fibers to relax and lengthen. This lengthening process is what makes this therapy unique.

The difference between manual massage and robotic therapy is that a human cannot create the sustained pressure required to fully release tension.

As the muscle relaxes fully, muscle fibers release contraction, and the muscle lengthens back to its natural state. Pressure is then taken off the vertebrae and the SI joint. This releases compression on the sciatic nerve and SI joint,

16 ESSENTIAL Naples FALL 2023 Health

improving function and eliminating pain. Robotic technology can resolve pain in a way no other therapy can.

How Robotic Muscular Therapy Works

• Customized Treatment: Based on a biomechanic evaluation, we determine the area of dysfunction and create a plan specifically for you.

• Non-Invasive and Painless: Non-invasive therapy—no need for surgery, drugs, or extensive recovery periods. And the treatment is virtually painless, providing a comfortable experience for those seeking relief.

• Faster Recovery: RPT promotes faster healing and recovery times, allowing you to resume daily activities with reduced downtime.

• Pain Resolution: By lengthening muscle fibers, pressure on joints and nerves is relieved, often resulting in complete pain resolution rather than mere pain management.

• Long-Lasting Results: By addressing the root cause of pain, this therapy aims to provide lasting relief, potentially reducing the need for ongoing therapies and pain management. This patented method of treating pain is not only beneficial for sciatica but many other types of pain. By targeting different muscle groups, many conditions can be relieved. Neck, back, shoulder, hip, and knee pain, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, and headaches have been helped by Robotic Muscular Therapy. Clients often report decreased pain after one session. By applying static pressure to muscles, muscle fibers are lengthened back to their proper state, correcting imbalances. This lengthening process alleviates the tension on the bone structure and nerves. Once this occurs, it greatly increases mobility and decreases pain, allowing clients to get back to doing the activities they enjoy.

For those living with pain, Naples Robotic Pain Relief can be the answer you’ve been looking for. Many clients tell us they “have tried everything” before finding us.

“I had been living with sciatica for a year and a half. I came in for Robotic Muscular Therapy, and after four sessions, my pain went away. I felt rejuvenated. I didn’t realize how much pain I was living with until it was gone.”

We offer a complimentary consultation so clients can learn more about this revolutionary technology. We learn about your condition, and you discover whether this therapy can help you. You truly have nothing to lose—except your pain.

7 Tips for Better Ball Striking and Compressing the Ball

If you ask any amateur “average Joe” golfer one thing they wish they could do better, chances are that they’ll respond with “compress the ball” or “improve my ball striking.” This is because amateur golfers in America can’t legitimately break 100 without the customary “breakfast ball” off the first tee, taking a Mulligan every nine holes, and the occasional “foot wedge.” And even with all that help, we (yes, I’m including myself) still struggle with topping the ball, chunking it, and hitting it thin (or even just a “little fat”).

Usually, those poor ball-striking shots are immediately followed with a second shot that is purely struck just to prove to yourself that “Yeah, I really am that good.” Then insert one of the eleventy-billion reasonable excuses that golfers come up with and continue to pencil-whip your scorecard. (Speaking of pencil whipping, I never did understand why golf-scoring pencils have erasers…)

7 Steps to Better Ball Striking

If you can relate to anything that has been said yet, make sure you take serious note of the following seven tips. Because if you’re anything like the countless golfers I’ve worked with in

Naples over the years, none of them were guilty of executing all seven!

1. Improve your golf posture. Most people have decent enough posture while standing, but as soon as they get into the address position, their posture “ages” 15 years. All of a sudden, they look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame. This posture locks down your available true shoulder turn and forces you to arm swing. It is physically impossible to hit down on the ball by arm swinging.

2. Focus on a consistent 2:1 swing speed. Nine out of ten amateur golfers have a much-too-fast backswing, which throws off your balance just enough to result in inconsistency in getting back to the ball. A wise man once told me, “You don’t hit the ball in the backswing—so why the h*** are you swinging so fast?” Practice saying out loud your first and middle name during the entirety of the backswing and then your last name to initiate the downswing. It will feel like an eternity, but this has worked wonders for many of my clients.

3. Finish your swing. So many amateur golfers finish their swing right at the ball or just after making contact. This again results in an

arm-initiated downswing and, most commonly, topping and/or slicing the ball. Your focus should be on finishing the swing by wrapping the club around your neck with your belt buckle pointing to the target. Then, just let that little round white thing get in the way.

4. Limit your backswing by how far you can get without your left elbow bending (this is for righties; lefties, reverse it). Keep that left elbow as straight as possible for as long as possible into the backswing, and then reverse the movement back toward the ball. This makes it much harder to arm swing and much easier to get your body to initiate the movement, resulting in more consistent ball striking!

5. Drink more water and eat more protein! This one is the easiest to accomplish and usually the lowest-hanging fruit. When your body gets dehydrated and depleted of energy stores on the back 9, it’s nearly impossible to achieve consistent ball striking. On average, you should strive for 32 ounces of water on the front 9 and back 9 and get in at least 20–30 grams of protein before teeing off and before starting the back 9.

6 and 7. I combine these two because they really need each other to be successful. Think about increasing pressure through the inside of your right shoe arch throughout the backswing, and then think about initiating the downswing with your belt buckle moving back toward the target. This will help you lag the club, which is by far the easiest way to improve your ball striking!

Control Your Cortisol: 6 Tips to Manage Stress

“Chronic stress on the body can occur from outside influences such as relationships, work, finances, or family life; from internal influences such as food sensitivities, poor gut health, or infections; or from a combination of internal and external

Stress—It can be a good thing and a bad thing. Yes, I said stress can be a good thing. We have a stress response system within our body that is managed by the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis). The hypothalamus and pituitary are organs within our brain that communicate with the adrenal glands, which sit just above the kidneys.

The HPA axis is in control of our stress response. The response to a stressful trigger creates the “fight or flight” response from the communication of our organs on this axis. The acute response of the HPA axis is important as it can actually save us—for instance, running (faster than we ever could under our own power) from something chasing us or fighting (harder than we could have ever imagined) when necessary. Adrenaline and cortisol are released during these stressful situations, which helps our body’s fight and flight efficiency.

The negative side to stress, however, is when the HPA axis is chronically stimulated. Chronic stress on the body can occur from outside influences such as relationships, work, finances, or family life; from internal influences such as food sensitivities, poor gut health, or infections; or from a combination of internal and external stress, such as physical pain, vehicle accidents, or physical abuse.

What Is Cortisol?

Cortisol is the stress hormone released from the adrenal glands. It is the stress hormone that has the most impact, positive or negative, on our body. In chronic stress situations, chronically high cortisol levels can be detrimental to our system. It can cause interrupted sleep, brain fog, abdominal fat, irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, high blood sugar levels, insulin resistance, prediabetes, diabetes mellitus type II, gut permeability, cravings, anxiety and depression, increased hunger, and more. Cortisol can also impact hormone balance in males and females.

Controlling Stress

Most of the time, we cannot take our stress away—we cannot stop being a parent, sibling, employee, employer... We typically cannot quit our jobs or undo the vehicle accident we were in. We can, however, control our stress response to improve the health of the HPA axis. How do we do that without being able to change the stressor?

1. Meal Plan: One of the most important things is fueling your body appropriately. First, we need to ensure blood sugar stability by consuming adequate amounts of protein and vegetables while balancing them with the right complex

Health
stress, such as physical pain, vehicle accidents, or physical abuse.”

carbohydrates. We should avoid or limit the higher glycemic index carbohydrates as well as inflammatory foods. You can identify foods that are inflammatory for your body specifically by checking your IgG and IgE food sensitivity test via blood.

2. Gut Health: It is extremely important to avoid foods that will cause more damage to your gut lining. The gut-brain interaction is extremely important to balance.

3. Proper Vitamin, Mineral, and Amino Acid Levels: Checking your levels via blood is very important to controlling overall brain-body interactions and balance. Things like vitamin D, folate, magnesium, L-theanine, and L-glutamine are just a few that are important to monitor and take! Levels should be checked prior to starting vitamins like Vitamin D.

4. Exercise: …With the proper balance. Exercise releases endorphins; however, if it is too intense or prolonged, it can also cause chronically elevated cortisol levels. A balance of strength training and cardiovascular training is vital.

5. Meditation and Positive Self-Imagery: This is key to releasing endorphins and improving serotonin levels. In turn, this will help to balance the HPA axis appropriately.

6. Grounding and Sunlight Each Morning: Allowing your feet to touch the ground (in the grass) and getting at least 10 minutes of sunlight each morning has been shown to lower cortisol levels.

I could easily list even more supplemental ideas to improve cortisol levels, but I’ll save those for now so you can start out slowly. Start by focusing on this list each day, and you will already be headed in the right direction for managing your stress and anxiety! It isn’t easy, but it is simple. Keep working.

Unlocking Human Potential: The Science of Change and Transformation

Mankind has forever sought ways to elevate their quality of life and find a balance between personal and professional spheres, whether through academic pursuits, spiritual enlightenment, or navigating crises. The journey to transformation, whether spurred by joy or adversity, is one of our most remarkable human capacities. A pivotal avenue in this quest involves the intricate link between mind and body, a topic that has intrigued humanity for ages. Demystifying this connection has been a monumental challenge, but one that Dr. Joe Dispenza undertook over two decades ago. In the last ten years, his groundbreaking research has yielded remarkable insights into creating lasting change, fundamentally altering our understanding of human potential.

His research team, through extensive work with thousands of brain wave scans, heart rate variability testing (HRV), gene expression analysis, immune regulation, cellular metabolism, and longevity measurements, has established compelling evidence for the power of conscious change. This work, bolstered by advancements in quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) measurements

and epigenetics, presents an empowering narrative—ordinary individuals can achieve extraordinary feats. These achievements, once considered beyond reach, are now supported by scientific rigor and accessible to anyone willing to explore their potential.

It Starts with Science

Science, the modern language of the mystical, has played a pivotal role in demystifying the extraordinary capabilities of the human mind and body. Measurable improvements in health and overall well-being have underscored the profound shifts occurring within individuals. The realization that change is not only possible but also quantifiable has driven the pursuit of understanding these transformations. Dr. Joe Dispenza, author, lecturer, researcher, and corporate consultant, has a mission of equipping people with the tools to tangibly alter their lives.

Dr. Joe’s work manifests through various channels. His four bestselling books are testaments to his commitment to elucidating behavioral and lasting change. Moreover, his weeklong events, consistently sold out within minutes of the

Purpose 22 ESSENTIAL Naples FALL 2023

announcement, bring together over 2,000 participants from around the world to explore the realms of transformation. Beyond these events, his brainchild, NeuroChange Solutions, has certified and trained over 180 consultants to bring his insights into the corporate sphere. These consultants are located around the globe and impart valuable insights across the corporate landscape in various languages. This initiative bridges the gap for organizations and business owners who yearn for transformational change but may be constrained by budget or time limitations.

The Power of Change

Neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to rewire itself, has gained substantial attention in recent years. However, a less explored aspect is the fact that over 75–90% of healthcare seekers battle inner turmoil, trapped in a cycle of psychological or emotional stress. Surprisingly, they unknowingly cling to negativity, and it gets addictive. Astonishingly, this self-inflicted agony deteriorates their own minds. But here’s the revelation: Nearly 50% of this narrative is a fabrication, a refuge from transformation. The silver lining? A proven metamorphosis awaits.

Through our transformative toolkit and change model, we shatter old patterns, crafting a revitalized self. In just seven days, witness profound biological shifts—a testament to the power of change. In this context, Dr. Joe’s approach equips individuals with the tools to manage stress, fostering a fertile ground for growth and change.

The prevalence of stress responses in modern living highlights the need for a paradigm shift. The once adaptive stress response designed to confront physical threats, like a predator, becomes maladaptive when directed at everyday challenges. This phenomenon extends beyond individuals to organizations, where a stressed culture inhibits effectiveness and collaboration. Dr. Joe’s methodology empowers individuals and organizations to embrace conscious thinking, refined communication, and emotional regulation, propelling them toward innovative, harmonious, and productive cultures.

A Transformative Journey

The driving force behind Dr. Joe’s efforts lies in fostering cohesive communities and encouraging collaboration, innovation, and mutual understanding. His methodology not only transforms individual lives but also cascades through mirror neurons, shaping collective behaviors. As a result, organizations thrive, employee well-being soars, and a culture of collaboration takes root. The interplay of happiness, health, and success within organizations becomes a harmonious symphony, benefiting both the workforce and the company’s bottom line.

My role in this transformative journey is deeply personal and professionally enriched. Selected by Dr. Joe Dispenza as part of this exclusive consultant group, my nearly 22 years of focused study on the human body and behavior lend profound insight. As his lead research nurse during weeklong events and my diverse professional journey through esteemed hospitals and digital health giants, I am provided a unique vantage, allowing me to witness the beauty of qualities that emerge when people are aligned with their values, as well as the challenges stemming from stress and unexpected hurdles leading to dis-ease or worse. Viewing Dr. Joe’s teachings through the lens of scientific research and medical expertise unveils new dimensions of human potential.

Together with Dr. Joe Dispenza’s paradigm-shifting insights and my years of dedicated expertise, we offer a comprehensive approach that addresses the intricacies of the mind-body connection, stress management, and conscious transformation. Helping Children Build Financial Skills

Whether your family has already begun instilling sound money management practices or you are searching for ways to begin, you may find these tips, suggestions, and concepts helpful.

For some children, money skills seem to come naturally, but it does not happen often. In fact, the JumpStart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy found that only 10% of 12th graders could satisfactorily answer questions about personal finance. To raise financially literate children, there is no substitute for good, old-fashioned parenting and hands-on teaching.

Preschoolers: Starting Early Helps

Begin teaching your children early. Children— sometimes as young as three—may begin to express curiosity about money. Keep things simple, and do not expect too much. Take advantage of “teachable moments” during the typical day, such as letting the child put coins into a parking meter or vending machine. You can begin talking to young children about the value of setting aside money they receive during the holidays or for a birthday for future wants and needs. Piggy banks make great gifts for this age group. As a child’s savings grow, you can decide together when to spend money.

In today’s consumer society, children are bombarded with advertising targeted at them. They

need to understand that buying the latest toy or game takes hard-earned money and that the family has a limited amount to spend. Explain that advertising is a sales pitch, and children do not need everything they see on TV. Begin to define the boundaries between what we want and what we need.

School-Age Children: Three Jars Approach

The elementary school years are a good time to help children understand how far a dollar goes. At about age seven, children can probably handle a small allowance. But instead of giving your child their allowance to spend as they see fit, introduce the concept of three jars: a spending jar, a savings jar, and a giving-to-charity jar. Have the child divide their allowance into the three jars. To help encourage larger allocations to the charity jar, offer to match the child’s money with your own.

Spending Jar

The spending jar can motivate kids to become wise shoppers. Talk to them about ways to compare the quality and prices of similar items. A trip to the grocery store can easily lead to one of those teachable moments. You can show children the differences among generic and name brands and the variations in price and quality.

As children mature, let them have increasing

24 ESSENTIAL Naples FALL 2023 Finance

freedom regarding how they use the contents of their “spending” jar. For example, as their interest in clothes blossoms, they point out why one purchase may be better than another regarding quality, appropriateness, and price.

Savings Jar

This is also the time to focus on the “savings” jar. As the value of the savings jar increases, consider opening a savings account at a nearby bank. Together, decide on something the child wants to save for, such as a bicycle, doll, baseball glove, or video game. If an item costs $50 and your child typically saves $3 per week, it will take a little longer than sixteen weeks (four months) to have enough to purchase the item. Explain to the child that if they can save an extra dollar a week ($4 per week), there will be enough money to purchase the item in just over twelve weeks (three months). Of course, it makes for a better teaching experience if the extra dollar per week is not saved at the expense of the “giving” jar but rather earned through some additional activity or behavior.

Allowing a child to use their savings to purchase items is only part of the learning experience, however. Letting your child make decisions about what to purchase is also important. Children who save and spend their own money tend to become savvier consumers. They are also more likely to take better care of their possessions because they

understand the sacrifice they made to purchase them. As the child ages, introduce the idea that you expect them to pay for certain expenses from the allowance you provide.

Depending on the child’s money skills and interest, you may want to begin discussing investing in stocks. Describe how purchasing stock makes the child a part-owner in a company, which means they can share in the company’s profitability. Encourage the child to research various companies. Typical candidates include a high-profile local company or a company that creates products or services the child uses. You might want to purchase a few shares of the selected company on behalf of the child and let them track the stock’s progress over time. If the company has a nearby location or is headquartered in your community, inquire about taking a tour with your child.

Giving Jar

Let the child determine where the cash in the charity jar should go. The selected organization should reflect the child’s interests and age level. For example, if they love animals, an animal welfare organization may be a good choice. If there are multiple children in your household, help each one decide on a charity of choice.

If you use the three-jar approach, you will want to give the child the latitude to allocate the allowance as they see fit—within reason, of course. But remember that it is not a bad thing to let your child make mistakes. We all learn by doing, and sometimes, the most important lessons are learned when we fail to reach our goals. Generally, the stakes are lower at this stage in a child’s life. Let the child learn from missteps today before the consequences become greater tomorrow.

Teenage Years: Stepping It Up a Notch

Accustomed to instant gratification and relatively carefree lives, many modern teenagers have difficulty understanding “no.” But your teenager’s desire for a new video game, phone, computer, or car can work to your advantage. Plan periodic family financial discussions where you begin to familiarize your teenager with the family budget. You may also discuss some of the family’s longer-term goals and priorities and perhaps how they can help you progress toward these goals.

At this stage, your teen may be interested in getting a job to earn extra cash. You will want to emphasize the wisdom in balancing work during the school year with school performance. Studies have shown that, on average, teens who work 20 hours or more per week achieve grades that are

half a letter lower than those who work fewer than 10 hours.

If your older teen or college-bound student wants a credit card, be sure to impress upon your child that responsible use of credit cards is a common way to help establish a good credit history. Emphasize that paying off the balance each month promptly is an essential safeguard against becoming a credit risk.

Help your teenager understand that a strong credit score is one of the keys to qualifying for the loan they will want someday. Even beyond being a key indicator of whether or not an applicant can qualify for a mortgage or line of credit, credit scores are used in other ways that affect people’s lives. For instance, according to the National Association of Professional Background Screeners, 31% of employers will run a credit or financial check on at least some candidates for employment.

Remember that teens with credit cards are less price-conscious, more likely to spend more, and more likely to overestimate their savings than those who pay cash. Problem behaviors to watch for in your teenager include paying bills late, not paying off credit cards in full, incurring late payments and fees, and bouncing checks. Remind your teen how stressful debt can be. Make it clear that a bad credit history can take a long time to correct.

Young Adults: Continuing the Education College graduation day has finally arrived. Your child is one of the lucky ones to land a job with a regular paycheck. The urge to splurge may be tempting, but finding a balance between spending and investing in their earlier years may be crucial to establishing long-term financial security. Some topics you may want to discuss include budgeting, “paying yourself first,” and the value of investing early.

Balancing Inflow and Outflow

Budgeting may sound intimidating to the uninitiated, but it is easier than it sounds and pays off for years to come. Boil it down to the basics for your adult child, and do not hesitate to return to the concept of three jars or “buckets”: one for spending, one for savings, and one for giving. In some instances, you may want to add a fourth bucket for “luxuries.”

Your Financial Advisor can provide you and your adult child with helpful budget worksheets. Your adult child will be asked to list income sources, such as wages, investment income, bonuses, etc. After that, they will list expenses, such as mortgage or rent payments, utilities, groceries, gasoline and

other transportation costs, insurance costs, etc. Those expenses go into the “spending” jar.

Taking Control of Expenses

Suppose expenses exceed income by a narrow margin. In that case, your child may be able to fix the problem by cutting some variable items listed in the expense column and transferring them to the “luxuries” category. For instance, a monthly clothing expense or cash set aside for restaurants or entertainment could be adjusted. If the margin separating income and expenses is greater, they might find it necessary to look for ways to reduce housing costs.

Some common guidelines for spending are shown in the table below.

Building Savings

One of the easiest and most practical ways to ensure that your adult child invests for the future is by encouraging the principle of “paying yourself first.” Assuming the child has a job, recommend participating in the employer-sponsored retirement plan if one is available. If the plan offers an automatic payroll deduction feature, such as with a 401(k) or 403(b) plan, encourage the child to enroll. If the employer provides a matching contribution, encourage them to contribute at least the amount that will be matched, as such contributions are essentially “free” money. Plant the seed of intention now to increase retirement-plan contributions as their salary grows, which will ease the path toward eventually reaching the maximum annual contribution amount.

More affluent families may also want to reward saving. If you or a grandparent expect to have a taxable estate someday, gifting to a child or grandchild may be beneficial. You may want to tie the gift to the saving behavior. Grandparents could make it clear that if children or grandchildren increase their savings amounts in a company-sponsored retirement plan or IRA, grandparents would be inclined to gift an equal amount to the child or grandchildren. If your adult child’s employer does not provide a retirement plan, encourage a systematic way to begin investing in a traditional or Roth IRA.

26 ESSENTIAL Naples FALL 2023 Finance
“Regardless of the method used to begin investing systematically, there is a potential benefit to starting a savings program early.”

For adult children whose adjusted gross income (AGI) falls below certain limits, remind them of the saver’s credit. The credit is equal to a specific percentage of employee contributions made to a retirement plan or IRA. The specific percentage depends on the taxpayer’s filing status and income. Ask your Financial Advisor and tax consultant for more information if you think your child may qualify. You will also want to educate your adult child on the value of dollar cost averaging, reinvesting dividends, and investing in other tax-deferred accounts.

Regardless of the method used to begin investing systematically, there is a potential benefit to starting a savings program early, as illustrated in the chart below. The early saver deposits $250 a month for ten years (a total of $30,000). The late saver waits ten years, then begins to deposit $250 a month for 30 years (a total of $90,000). Assuming an 8% compounded interest rate, the early saver is left with a substantially higher savings account balance despite a much lower personal investment, demonstrating the value of time.

Preparing for Marriage and Children

As your adult child matures, marries, and begins a family of their own, you will want to continue to encourage sound financial management. It is important to review family protection programs, including life, disability, and health insurance. Remind your child to inquire about flexible spending accounts (FSAs) through their employer. Of course, they will also want to ensure that proper estate documents—at least a will and durable power of attorney—are in order. Depending on your child’s financial success, this may be the appropriate time to reintroduce them to your Financial Advisor, who can offer an array of financial services and programs to assist your child in achieving the same financial success you enjoy.

Developing Social Responsibility

Along with a career and financially stable life comes a social responsibility to give back to the community. This presents an excellent opportunity to revisit the “giving” jar with your adult child. Just as with younger children, you may want to suggest that your adult child set aside a portion of their inflow for charitable purposes. Though your child’s values may differ from your own, the goal is to encourage your child to support initiatives consistent with their ideals.

Your Organs Could Be Slowly Starving!

The endothelial glycocalyx is a remarkable structure that lines the inner surface of blood vessels, playing a significant role in maintaining our overall health and well-being. This gel-like layer, composed of various molecules, acts as a protective barrier for the endothelium, the innermost layer of blood vessels. Its preservation is essential for our health.

The Role of Endothelial Glycocalyx

One of the primary functions of the endothelial glycocalyx is to shield the delicate endothelial cells from the mechanical forces exerted by blood flow. It serves as an interface between the circulating blood and the endothelium, acting as a cushion against shear stress caused by the friction between blood and vessel walls. By reducing this stress, the glycocalyx helps maintain the integrity and functionality of the endothelium.

Furthermore, the glycocalyx regulates vascular permeability, ensuring that only essential molecules are transported across the endothelium. Its intricate structure and negative charge repel negatively charged macromolecules, preventing their entry into the vessel wall. This selective permeability is crucial for maintaining the balance of fluids, nutrients, and waste products within the bloodstream.

The endothelium plays a pivotal role in maintaining vascular homeostasis, and the glycocalyx is vital for its proper functioning. The glycocalyx helps regulate endothelial cell behavior by modulating signal transduction pathways involved in vascular tone regulation, inflammation, and coagulation.

By acting as a reservoir for signaling molecules, the glycocalyx plays a key role in the release and availability of vasoactive substances like nitric oxide, which regulates blood vessel dilation and constriction. A healthy glycocalyx ensures the optimal release of nitric oxide, contributing to proper endothelial function and prevention of conditions like hypertension.

The endothelial glycocalyx also plays a crucial role in modulating the immune response and inflammation. It acts as a barrier against the adhesion and infiltration of immune cells into the vessel wall, preventing excessive inflammation. Additionally, the glycocalyx releases anti-inflammatory molecules that help regulate the immune response.

Maintaining the Health of Your Endothelial Glycocalyx

When the glycocalyx becomes damaged or dysfunctional, immune cells can adhere to the endothelium, leading to chronic inflammation and the development of various diseases, including cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders.

So why is it important to know the health of your glycocalyx? The glycocalyx is a remarkable structure that plays a vital role in maintaining our overall health. By protecting against shear stress, regulating vascular permeability, preserving endothelial function, and modulating immune response and inflammation, the glycocalyx ensures the proper functioning of our blood vessels.

Mold Toxicity in Humans: Understanding Risks, Effects, and Mitigation

30 ESSENTIAL Naples FALL 2023 Feature

Mold, a common type of fungi, has been a part of the Earth’s ecosystem for millions of years, playing a vital role in breaking down organic matter and recycling nutrients. However, when mold finds its way into indoor environments and starts proliferating, it can lead to a range of health issues for humans. Mold toxicity, also known as mycotoxicosis, is a growing concern due to its potential to cause various adverse effects on human health.

Causes and Sources of Mold Toxicity

Mold spores are present virtually everywhere in the environment, both indoors and outdoors. They can enter indoor spaces through open windows, doors, and ventilation systems, as well as by attaching themselves to clothing, pets, and other surfaces. Once inside, molds thrive in damp and humid environments, such as basements, bathrooms, and areas with water leaks. Common indoor mold species include Aspergillus, Penicillium, Cladosporium, and Stachybotrys (often referred to as “black mold”).

31 ESSENTIAL Naples FALL 2023

air.

The growth of mold is driven by moisture, warmth, and a source of organic material to feed on. Leaky roofs, plumbing issues, and inadequate ventilation can contribute to excess moisture, creating an ideal environment for mold growth. Once mold colonies establish themselves, they release tiny spores into the air. These spores can then be inhaled, leading to potential health problems. Often, all it takes is 24–48 hours of humidity or moisture for a mold spore to germinate and release mold toxins. Imagine all of the people in SWFL who were potentially exposed to mold during Hurricane Ian!

Effects of Mold Toxicity on Health

Exposure to mold and its toxins can affect individuals differently based on factors such as genetics, sensitivity, and the type and amount of mold present. While not everyone exposed to mold will develop adverse health effects, certain individuals, particularly those with allergies, asthma, or compromised immune systems, are more susceptible.

Mold toxicity can manifest as a wide range of symptoms, which can vary in severity. Common symptoms include:

• Respiratory Issues: Inhaling mold spores can irritate the respiratory system, causing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion, and throat irritation. Individuals with asthma may experience exacerbation of their symptoms. We have seen several patients with chronic sinus congestion, sore throats, and chronic cough, all starting days after exposure to mold-damaged buildings and lasting for months or even years after exposure until treated. Within months of treatment, these symptoms resolve.

• Allergic Reactions: Mold can trigger allergic reactions in susceptible individuals, leading to symptoms like sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, and skin rashes.

• Neurological Symptoms: Some studies suggest a potential link between mold exposure and neurological symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, memory issues, and difficulty concentrating. However, more research is needed to establish a clear connection.

• Fatigue and Malaise: Prolonged exposure to mold toxins has been associated with feelings of fatigue, weakness, and an overall sense of malaise.

• Skin Irritation: Direct contact with mold or its mycotoxins can lead to skin irritation, redness, and itching.

• Immune System Suppression: In rare cases, exposure to certain types of molds and their toxins can lead to immune system suppression, making individuals more susceptible to infections.

• Long-Term Health E ects: Prolonged exposure to high levels of mold toxins may have more severe health implications, including respiratory disorders and chronic inflammation, which could potentially contribute to the development of other chronic diseases. Mold toxicity could even be masquerading as chronic fatigue syndrome, immune issues, and other chronic neurological issues, as data now shows that mycotoxins often reach the brain and central nervous system and can potentially stay there for years.

What people may not realize is that although you can easily test a home for mold toxins, there are NO FDA-approved tests to assess mycotoxins in humans—yet. Private companies using CLIAcertified laboratories have created optional non-FDA-approved blood and urine tests in humans for mycotoxins and mycotoxin antibodies, and through conferences and consultation with other mold expert physicians with decades of experience, these tests have been determined to be fairly accurate. Once mold is treated with the use of antifungal medications and certain binders, these tests show linear improvement. Antifungal medications can take 3–6 months or longer to fully eradicate the mold, but symptoms often improve two months into treatment.

Mitigation and Prevention

Mitigating mold toxicity involves both addressing existing mold issues and preventing their recurrence. Here are some essential steps for mold prevention and remediation:

• Moisture Control: The key to preventing mold growth is controlling moisture. Address any leaks, fix plumbing issues promptly, ensure proper ventilation in damp areas, and maintain indoor humidity levels below 50%. I’ve heard several stories of people in Florida having a broken air conditioner while out of town and returning to mold on the walls of their home. Keep the A/C working and consider using electronic WiFi-connected thermostats that notify you (via an app on your phone) if the system is not working!

• Proper Ventilation: Ensure that your home has proper ventilation in areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. Exhaust fans can help reduce moisture buildup.

• Regular Cleaning: Regularly clean and dust your home, especially in areas prone to dampness. Use mold-resistant products for painting and building materials.

• Immediate Repairs: Address water leaks and dampness as soon as they are identified. Swift action can prevent mold from gaining a foothold. Repair within 48 hours of water damage; ideally within 24 hours.

• Professional Inspection: If you suspect mold growth, consider hiring a professional mold inspector to assess the situation and recommend appropriate remediation measures.

• E ective Remediation: If mold is identified, proper removal is crucial. This often involves isolating the affected area, using protective gear, and employing techniques such as scrubbing, HEPA vacuuming, and sometimes, the removal of contaminated materials.

• Air Purification: High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters can help reduce the concentration of mold spores in the air, improving indoor air quality.

Be Vigilant!

Mold toxicity in humans is a complex issue with potentially serious health implications. While mold is a natural part of the environment, it can become a problem when it infiltrates indoor

spaces and thrives in damp conditions. The effects of mold toxicity on health can vary widely, ranging from mild allergic reactions to more severe respiratory and neurological symptoms. Prevention and mitigation strategies are crucial to addressing mold-related issues. By controlling moisture, maintaining proper ventilation, and promptly addressing any mold problems, individuals can create healthier indoor environments that minimize the risk of mold toxicity and its associated health effects. As research continues to advance, a better understanding of mold’s impact on human health will pave the way for more effective prevention and remediation strategies.

Why Is Mold So Common in Southwest Florida Homes?

J

ust today, I received a call from my best and favorite handyman. He had been called out to a customer’s home due to a small water spot, about two inches, on her ceiling. Upon investigating, he determined the spot was still wet, and when he opened up the ceiling, it revealed massive mold contamination. The cause: Condensation of an HVAC line between the first and second floors of her home. She reported having had severe sinus issues for some time now. He replied, “You might have just found the cause.”

These calls are common. Excluding floods, tropical storms, and hurricanes, most mold issues come from common household problems. Whether from a water leak or high humidity, mold will grow in 24–48 hours and feed on many common household items.

The Danger of Mold

As mold grows, it produces a byproduct called mycotoxin. As the name implies, it is a dangerous toxin that can cause health conditions in humans and animals. Currently, the research shows only certain species of mold produce these toxins. That’s the good news. The bad news is that some of the most common molds in households produce mycotoxins.

Mold is usually microscopic and unseen by the naked eye. So when you “see” mold, be aware that a one-inch square can contain millions of spores that can easily be disturbed to allow the spores and hyphal fragments to circulate in the air through your HVAC system. This cross-contamination makes mold so difficult to remediate in a home or office.

Common issues we find during mold inspections:

• Water leaks: ice makers, under sinks, dishwashers, washers

• Window or roof leaks

• History of previous leaks or floods

• HVAC condensation and or clogged drains

• HVAC not controlling humidity

• Humidity! We live in Florida, and we must monitor and control our indoor humidity

The Importance of a Proper HVAC System

One of the most common species, Aspergillus/ Penicillium , produces not only mold but dangerous mycotoxins and grows in high humidity, 60% or higher—no direct water required. And this species can look like dust, so it often goes overlooked.

HVAC is critical in the control of humidity and mold growth. The following are the settings that need to be checked.

• Size of HVAC Unit: Is the HVAC sized properly for the home’s square footage? This is critical in controlling humidity. If the unit is too small, it runs all the time and creates a never-ending struggle to not only cool but keep down humidity. If my unit is larger than I need, it cools fast and turns off quickly. This does not allow enough run time to do its second job: dehumidification.

• Testing Your System: To test your HVAC, it should run at least 20 minutes per hour. If your unit runs shorter cycles, it most likely is NOT running long enough to remove the humidity.

34 ESSENTIAL Naples FALL 2023 Health

Common sources of mold-causing humidity in homes.

• Thermostat Settings: If you keep your temperature setting too high (78 degrees or higher), your unit may need to run longer to have a chance to remove the humidity.

• Fan On Setting: Always have your fan set on auto. If you always have your fan on when your unit runs rather than having it at the auto setting, moisture may accumulate on the coil as it removes humidity. The unit may turn off, but the fan is still blowing, picking up that moisture on the coils it just removed and blowing it back into the room, creating humidity.

• Condensation or a stopped-up drain line. With every mold-toxic patient we have worked with, the HVAC was a significant contributing factor. Without a doubt, mold can create allergy-like symptoms. Ear, nose, and throat specialists tell us that about 80% of their patients with chronic sinus issues are related to mold. And when you consider the mold species that produce mycotoxins, you get into much more severe health issues. We have worked with patients experiencing chronic pain, chronic illness, brain fog, abdominal pains, body twitches, memory issues, rashes, ringing in the ears, sensory issues, body bloated, extreme fatigue, and more.

Regardless of whether you see mold or just suspect that it’s there, the prudent action is to get your home analyzed to evaluate species and see if counts appear in the “safe” range. As the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) states, “All mold is bad and needs to be removed.”

Home Maintenance Is Key

Your office or home must be maintained. Besides being on the lookout for leaks and condensation, it is wise to invest in several humidity meters to place throughout your home to routinely monitor. Make sure your humidity is under 60% at all times. I recently installed two new units in my home, which run at 42% humidity most of the time.

Clean your space regularly, as mold loves to feed on dust. Change out your furnace filters regularly with a MERV 8-rated filter. And if you feel physically better when you are away from your home or office, consider having a mold assessment. With what we now know about mold and health issues, it’s nothing to ignore. “On X-ray, the knee that did not hurt was the knee that showed worse bone on bone! Yet, on the X-ray, the knee that did hurt showed lingering cartilage and was not bone on bone… For this reason, by the laws of science, you cannot say that bone on bone “causes” pain.”

Bone on Bone Does NOT Cause Knee Pain

It bothers me to no end when I hear somebody say they have to get a knee replacement because their X-ray shows that they are “bone on bone.” Or they say they will eventually have to get their knee replaced because “the arthritis is just going to keep getting worse.” Both of these statements couldn’t be further from the truth; in other words, both of those statements couldn’t be further from fact!

I can confidently say this because over the many years I’ve worked with patients who have just had a knee replacement, during that most painful first week post-op, I would constantly hear, “I’m really not looking forward to having my other knee replaced.” I’d always follow up on that question and ask why they thought it was inevitable they would need to have the other knee replaced. The most common answer I’d get is, “Well, on X-ray, the other knee was way worse and completely bone on bone. But this knee was the one that was in pain, so we [they and their surgeon] decided to replace this one first.”

Make sure you read that last sentence again. On X-ray, the knee that did not hurt was the knee that showed worse bone on bone! Yet, on the X-ray, the knee that did hurt showed lingering cartilage and was not bone on bone… For this reason, by the laws of science, you cannot say that bone on bone “causes” pain. You can say that bone on bone can be associated with pain symptoms, but you cannot say that bone on bone causes pain.

Bone, Ligament, Tendon, Muscle!

Now, I know that a lot of you reading this are probably saying, “Well, my X-ray shows bone on bone, and my knee hurts like h***! If bone on bone isn’t causing my pain, what is?!”

My response is inflammation of the surrounding soft tissues, not your bone on bone. My rationale behind that statement is that countless times, I’ve had patients come to me months and sometimes years after having a knee replacement, stating that their knee hurts more now than before the surgery!

38 FALL 2023 ESSENTIAL Naples Health

If you know anything about knee replacement, you likely know that the surgeon removes your “old” bone-on-bone joint and replaces it with metal and plastic. So again, if your knee hurts more months and years after the surgery than it did before the surgery, you can’t blame it on your X-ray showing bone on bone anymore.

To make it as simple as possible, there are only four things that can cause a pain response in the knee: bone, ligament, tendon, muscle. Injury to any one of those four structures can cause a pain response. The surgery replaces bones and ligaments with metal and plastic, so the only things left around your knee that can cause pain are muscles and tendons.

And that, my friends, is what I’ve found is causing knee pain in 99% of the “bone-on-bone” cases I’ve seen over the years. The Incredible Organic Garden

Now, let’s get to the food—one of the main reasons I wanted to experience this fantastic property. Many of the locally sourced ingredients used in the restaurants and bar come directly from their all-natural garden, an expansive plot of produce and herbs that Chef Luca and the culinary team incorporate into each restaurant and banquet menu.

We got a chance to meet the Master Gardener, Jamie, and tour the extensive plots she’s built. When Jamie came to Sorrel, she spent her first year building the soil foundation with manure, scraps, hay, and compost. She used recycled materials from barn wood and driftwood from the river, and, of course, the gardens are all organic, with no chemical pesticides—she uses diatomaceous earth as a natural pesticide.

We had a long conversation about the importance of growing organic food. She told me when you spray pesticides on plants, not only is that not healthy for us to eat, but all the energy in the plant goes to fighting off the pesticide and not into nutrition for the plant. Just another reason to eat organic if you want to get the most nutrients out of your food.

As you can imagine, growing anything in the desert is a challenge, and you constantly need compost to hold water. I was absolutely amazed by how many different types of fruits and vegetables she is able to grow, including strawberries, raspberries, celery, artisanal lettuces, broccoli, squash, corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, mini pink popping corn, garlic, shallots, pumpkin, butternut squash, apples, peaches, asparagus, elderberry, beets, peas, carrots, cilantro, radish, potato, multitudes of peppers, eggplant, amaranth, edible flowers, and the already-impressive list goes on.

Chef Luca and the culinary team collaborate with Jamie and her gardening team before each coming month to plan seasonal varieties. They also have a brand-new U-Pick Garden experience, offering visitors a unique opportunity to connect with nature and savor the joys of harvesting your own produce.

Dining and Drinks

After a long day of adventures, we relaxed at the Epic bar, which features plush seating, a roaring fireplace, and refined art that complemented a menu of international wines, craft brews, and artisanal mixed drinks. I had one of the best margaritas made with all local ingredients. For dinner, we had the burrata and heirloom tomato salad with Italian burrata cheese, heirloom cherry tomatoes, garden basil in an EVOO balsamic reduction, and the pan-fried local trout with sautéed farm spinach and blistered cherry tomatoes. Perfection!

The Sorrel River Ranch offers an adventurous escape from the grind of daily life, where you can simply relax on your private porch and watch the Colorado River glide by or explore the amazing landscape all day. Visit www.sorrelriver.com to experience all the ranch has to offer.

PRF: The New Golden Child in Regenerative Dentistry

Platelet

concentrates have been used in the medical and dental fields for over 20 years for their favorable wound healing capabilities. In the 1990s, the initial biomaterial was PRP (platelet-rich plasma), but PRP needed anticoagulant medications to prolong its working time. Within the past five years, PRF (platelet-rich fibrin, which contains approximately 10 times the platelet concentration that is found in the body) has come to be known as the “golden child,” not only due to better growth factor (GF) concentrates and extension of its properties from 2–4 weeks (PRP) to 4–6 months (PRF), but it is a much more natural delivery method, and no anticoagulants are needed. Today, these platelet concentrates are used worldwide in regenerative medicine because of their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties as well as their incredible wound-healing capabilities. Platelet concentrates create the opportunity to deliver many GFs simultaneously and together with platelets, leukocytes (white blood cells) serve in the natural wound-healing process.

PRF is considered a second-generation platelet concentrate with a longer growth factor release profile. It forms a 3D scaffolding or matrix that, in addition to its high concentration of beneficial leukocytes, plays a key role in tissue healing and tissue formation. The takeaway here is that even

though PRP, which stays active for 2–4 weeks, has been used in almost every aspect of medicine for over 20 years and is recommended for the fast release of GFs, PRF is better suited for long-term delivery and has a greater wound-healing potential over a longer period, since it can be extended to 4–6 months. Additionally, PRF can stimulate osteogenesis (new bone formation) and angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation). In PRF, the fibrin matrix is better organized and is therefore able to more efficiently direct stem cell migration toward the healing site.

PRF in Dentistry

In dentistry, PRF has numerous implications— from preserving bone in extraction sites, repairing periodontal (gum) defects, gingival recessions, implant placements, bone regeneration, sinus grafts, healing soft tissues by joining them when even sutures won’t work, and even facial esthetics. New studies have shown that PRF significantly lowers the rate of dry sockets and post- operatory pain following third molar (wisdom teeth) extractions, and there are even new studies in regenerative dentistry mainly because of PRF’s unique biocompatible properties and regenerative abilities.

This is why we highly recommend PRF in just about every extraction performed. Not only is it the

46 ESSENTIAL Naples FALL 2023
Health

most natural way to help in healing, but also in preserving the jaw bones with its prolonged delivery time of GFs to the extraction site. Multiple studies have been published on the use of PRF vs. regular bone grafts (cadaver, bovine, etc.); no significant differences were found between the two groups except that PRF alone is all natural; there is no need for cadaver or bovine/porcine bone material. In some cases, we will add a tri-calcium phosphate in order to make a “thicker” matrix (also known as “sticky bone”); this also allows for better maintenance of the site if the patient will have an implant placed immediately or in the near future.

The Future of PRF

The new frontier in Regenerative Dentistry includes regenerating pulpal (nerve) cells, TMD (temporomandibular disorders), and even ONJ (osteonecrosis of the jaws). Although there are no systemic reviews on the use of PRF in these cases, there are many case reports and studies showing promising outcomes.

At Pure Dental Naples, we have had success avoiding root canals in certain teeth. While we obviously cannot bring back to life a tooth (nerve) that is dead, there is a sensitive protocol that needs to be followed, and the outcomes have been excellent. When teeth have very large or deep cavities, the use of ozone O2/O3, bioactive

materials, and PRF is showing promising results. Additionally, many patients will be happy to find that PRF can be used in facial esthetics: skin regeneration (micro-needling), skin re-volumizing, and reshaping fillers (also known as BioPRF). Although in the early stages, using PRF vs. the traditional fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, Voluma) provides a more natural approach to the traditional chemical materials currently being used. Some clinicians are effectively using PRF for certain hair loss treatments as well.

It is exciting to see that PRF is also being used in diabetic ulcer treatments with excellent results. Because of its ability to revascularize tissues and its incorporation of defense fighting immune cells, PRF has proven to be a relatively low cost, easily procurable regenerative strategy. There are numerous studies being conducted presently on PRF and its regenerative and anti-microbial properties, and I believe PRF will be the new “go-to” in regeneration and healing protocols. All these features support the conclusion that PRF is the superior option to better enhance the healing of soft and hard tissues. I sometimes joke: “PRP is old school… we use PRF in our office!”

Jumping Through Hoops: Facing Cancer with Traditional Healthcare

The past nine months have been some of the worst of my life. Around the beginning of the year, I began noticing that the annoying headache I had wasn’t going away, no matter what I tried. My usual go-to over-the-counter meds and natural practices for headaches weren’t working. As someone who has battled with migraines since I was in my teens, I like to think I know more than the average person about headaches and treatment. I can easily tell a tension headache from a migraine from a run-of-the-mill headache.

The pain I was experiencing was none of those. I was dealing with an unknown quantity and wasn’t sure how to approach it.

Self-Care? What’s That?!

At that time, my partner was having some health issues of his own. When we learned he had renal cell carcinoma, I put my own needs on hold to focus on his care. Thankfully, though indeed he was given a very scary diagnosis, his cancer was contained and limited to a very large tumor on one of his kidneys—it was literally the size of a football. He was very lucky, though (relatively speaking) in that they were able to remove the affected kidney the tumor was attached to, and he didn’t need any further treatment—no meds, no radiation, no chemo—a considerable relief.

His surgery was performed in early March 2023, but because of the size of his tumor, they weren’t able to remove it via laparoscopic surgery as originally planned and he ended up with an eight-inch incision in his abdomen, which increased his recovery time exponentially. During his recovery, I had been his caregiver and was working seventy-hour weeks as well, so there was little time for my own self-care. As soon as he was back on his feet and back to work in May, I was finally able to address my own health issues.

The Hoop-Jumping

Most of us are all too familiar with the often excruciatingly slow process of being diagnosed through traditional healthcare, and that turned out to be the case for me here. The first provider I saw wanted to treat it as a headache caused by allergies. I didn’t believe allergies were the source, but I trusted the instincts of the provider.

But my own instincts were right—allergies were not the cause. The provider was stumped and wanted to refer me to an otolaryngologist or ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor. After three weeks and multiple calls and messages from me, I still hadn’t heard from scheduling for the appointment. I ended up switching healthcare systems entirely and finding a new care provider. This, of course, started the whole process again from scratch.

The next provider had a more likely diagnosis— trigeminal neuralgia. Common in women my age and aligning with some of my symptoms, I thought we were really onto something. Finally! This provider also referred me to an ENT, and thankfully, I was able to get an ENT appointment...more than a month later, on June 20. Meanwhile, I was prescribed a nerve-blocker with some seriously scary potential side effects. And since it didn't work for me anyway, I stopped taking it pretty quickly.

My ENT appointment arrived, with frustrating results. Whatever was going on with me, it was not trigeminal neuralgia. So finally, after months of appointments and medications and consultations, an MRI is finally ordered, and the soonest they can get me in is another month, on July 22.

The MRI Findings

By that time, I was eager for the procedure, as it is so incredibly difficult to live with a constant headache (literally constant—it hasn’t gone away since I became aware of it at the beginning

48 ESSENTIAL Naples FALL 2023 Health

—Lori Hubbard, MA

of the year; there are merely moments of better and worse). A Saturday early morning brain MRI sounded like a trip to Hawaii to me at that point.

The results were scarier than I anticipated. There were two small lesions in my parietal lobe, and, in the words of the radiologist: “Metastatic disease is not excluded.” Those are some of the most frightening words I’ve ever read.

Metastatic disease. Brain mets. Cancer spreading from another part of my body to my brain. If you look at the prognosis of this disease, you can imagine how terrified I was. And as far as I was aware, I didn’t even have cancer. How could this be?

So we scheduled another brain MRI, this one specifically tumor-focused, to verify the findings of the first. I suppose the silver lining is that things were finally moving at a faster pace due to the serious nature of the findings from the initial MRI.

The second MRI not only confirmed the first but actually discovered three more lesions—a total of five lesions scattered throughout my frontal and parietal lobes. And if that weren’t enough, this time the impression doesn’t read “metastatic disease not excluded,” but instead, “concerning for metastatic disease.” The news just kept getting worse.

The Search for the Source

Armed with this information, the search for the primary source of the cancer began. Blood tests, mammogram, colonoscopy, and CT scan were all clear, with no signs of tumor or other forms of cancer. Time for the PET scan, which reads cellular activity. Since cancer cells have more energy, the PET scan is generally able to pick that up. Not flawless, of course, but highly reliable. Unfortunately, I had to wait another three weeks before they could get me in for the PET.

I was instructed to eat a low-carb, low-sugar diet the day before the PET scan and eat or drink nothing but water the morning of the procedure, which I followed to the letter—except that habitually and without thinking, I ate an Altoid on the way to my appointment. I mentioned this during my prep, wanting to be completely transparent…and they sent me home. One little Altoid—two grams of carbs—two hours before the procedure was supposed to begin, and I’d ruined my shot. Because of how the body processes sugar, it can taint the results of the PET. I was devasted—I had already waited so long, and because of my thoughtlessness, I now had to wait longer. Thankfully, though, I was able to get in just five days later. And you can bet I didn’t consume any carbs for days before that one!

Thankfully, I received the results quickly. The PET scan had picked up no signs of cancer in my body. Many of my loved ones took this as excellent news, but honestly, I didn’t know what I felt. Where is this cancer that caused my brain metastases

coming from? Are the lesions even brain mets, or something else?

What’s Next

As of this writing, I await a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) to check my cerebrospinal fluid for leukemia or non-Hodgkins lymphoma. If that produces no results, which the doctors believe is likely, it’s time for them to biopsy one of the lesions. This is a process in which they will shave a small section of hair from the top of my head, cut out a circular piece of my skull, enter my frontal lobe with equipment I don’t care to see, and grab a piece of the lesion to send to pathology. The piece of my skull will be replaced using screws, and I will spend the night in the hospital for recovery. Scary, right? But for me, it’s far more frightening to live with this unknown. It’s difficult to confront the enemy when you have no idea what the enemy is. What is happening in my body? And what do I do to help myself?

Alternative Treatments

Early last Saturday morning, I received a Reiki treatment from an incredible healer. Without initially realizing it, on Saturday and into Sunday morning, even though I still had head pain, I felt more like myself than I have in a very long time. I had much more energy and stamina, my mental state was vastly improved, and, in general, I almost felt like I did this time last year. It was incredible. Then, on Sunday evening, I participated in a remote energy healing session, and again, I felt so much better the next day.

I had nearly three days in a row of really feeling like me—not tiring so easily, not needing to step away from my computer when doing my editing work, being able to do my graphic design, all of which I adore. I was able to be truly present with the people I love and to care for and spend time with the many animals in my care. Even being able to clean my house was a treat.… I’ve been in a state of pain, exhaustion, and depression for so long that I actually forgot what it felt like to be me.

Being part of the Essential Naples and Natural Nutmeg communities, I’m fortunate to have access to some truly amazing naturopathic healers, doctors, and nutritionists; energy healing, counseling, and meditation; and a vast range of knowledge of healing herbs, oils, foods, and supplements. I am also attending the Energy Medicine Solution Retreat that takes place October 12–15, 2023, both in person in Bristol, CT, as well as virtually.

Facing cancer and its traditional treatments is certainly frightening, but with the resources available through this magazine and these communities, I feel strong, supported, and ready to fight this thing head-on.
