hy do we insist on doing it all ourselves? Where did we get this mentality that we shouldn’t ask for help? Now, I know some of you control freaks (myself included) believe that in order to get it done right, you might as well do it yourself. But more often than not, you will achieve much greater results if you have the support of a team of people around you. Think about the most successful people in the world; leaders of countries, big business, organizations. Is it a one-man or woman operation? The answer is no. The most effective people build a team of individuals around them that have talents beyond what they themselves have to create a high functioning, effective system. Your dream team should consist of people that you can trust and that have similar goals and dreams as well as your best interests at heart. First you need to be clear about how you define success and who you know or could potentially get to know that meet your criteria. Individuals that you select for your dream team may come from family, friends, neighbors, contacts in online communities, volunteer groups, previous jobs, colleagues from other companies, contacts in your current organization, and mentors or coaches. Make a list of all of these potential people. I would also encourage you to make a list of people that are highly successful in your field or industry, even if you don’t know them personally. Narrow this list down to 5-10 people that each offer something unique to help you reach another level. You will want people that serve many different purposes. Some of the individuals on my dream team include a business strategist, graphic designer, marketing and public relations specialist, presentation coach, virtual assistant and spiritual advisor. Some are at the same level professionally that I am and others are at higher levels where I aspire to be. So, if I take an average of these people in terms of what I define success to be, it works out to be a little bit higher than where I am right now. So, you might be thinking – how do I ask someone to be on my dream team if they’re more successful than me or they don’t know me? 1. Keep it simple. Be clear about what you are asking for and make it easy for them to say yes. 2. Don’t ask for too much too soon if you have not established a relationship, but don’t be afraid to ask just because they don’t know you. 3. Be confident and passionate about what you’re doing – this energy is contagious and people will want to be a part of your dream team because it’s exciting. 4. Determine if there is anything you can give back to them in return for their time and advice. 5. Trust that the universe will bring the right people at the right time to assist you on your journey. In health and happiness,

news & notes The Fresh Market Opens In Avon

O

ffering a “European” shopping experience is what Avon’s new Fresh Market is all about, according to Avon store manager Don Desrosiers. Sandwiched between a few major grocery stores, you would expect Fresh Market to be different, and it does not disappoint. The focus is definitely on “fresh.” Gorgeous produce greets you on entering the store. The store features all the departments you would hope for — delicatessen, bakery, seafood, sushi bar, gourmet cheese, and more. Groceries on the shelves, such as pasta, canned goods, and body care items, include gourmet, European, or Fresh Market’s own brands. On a recent visit, the store had a busy but relaxed atmosphere with curious customers sampling everything from fresh-brewed Tanzanian Peaberry coffee to Cathedrale de Meaux Brie. Store manager Desrosiers emphasized that the store’s 90 employees are trained to offer “above average” customer service. This was borne out in all areas of the store, as questions were greeted by knowledgeable, outgoing staff with offers to taste-test goodies. The bulk food area —dried fruits and veggies, nuts, and a huge selection of candy — is downright seductive. The store, which opened on Route 44 in February, is the newest in The Fresh Market chain, based in Greensboro, North Carolina. It has 115 stores in 26 states, although the Avon store is only the second in Connecticut. Visit www.thefreshmarket.com for additional information, advice, and online ordering services. Unique M.A. Degree in Organizational Leadership Available this Fall!

T

he Graduate Institute of Bethany, CT is pleased to announce enrollment for the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership. This one-of-a-kind program offers a creative, dynamic, and transformative approach to leadership, and is the only M.A. currently available in this field anywhere in the state of Connecticut. The Graduate Institute’s M.A. in Organizational Leadership is grounded in a highly interactive learning model, where participants design and execute real-time initiatives that directly impact their work. Classes meet just one weekend per month (Friday night and Saturday) and are designed to fit the schedules of busy working adults. Interested candidates can contact an Admissions Representative at (203) 874-4252 or via email at info@learn.edu. It’s More Interesting Outside My Body

W

hen I was four years old, while in bed with a cold I took a toy apart and put the parts in my mouth, imitating some carpenters I had seen. I then aspirated the parts and was choking to death. I couldn’t call for help and the struggle to breathe was incredibly painful. Then I found myself out of my body looking down at the dying boy. I can tell you it was a lot more interesting out of my body than in it and I had no desire to return, though I felt bad for my mother who would come in and find me dead. After a few minutes the boy on the bed started agonal vomiting, the toy pieces were dislodged and he started breathing again. I was mad as hell when I found myself back in my body yelling, “Who did that?” What never occurred to me was how I could see after I left my body. For those who doubt this type of event read “Mind Sight” by Ken Ring. It is a book documenting the near death experiences of people born blind. Yes, they could see when they left their bodies and many were not thrilled to be saved or resuscitated and blind again. My belief is similar to the words of author William Saroyan who wrote in a short story “The Young Man on the Flying Trapeze” about a boy who dies and becomes, “dreamless, unalive, perfect.” Many years ago a friend, while talking to me on the phone, learned how busy I was and asked, “Why are you living this life?” I went into a trance in which I saw myself with a sword in my hand killing people. The entire story is too emotional for me to share

here but after living this experience I truly felt that I had become a surgeon to help heal people with a knife and no longer kill with a sword. Now again you may all think I’m nuts and I have no problem with that nor does my therapist or parole officer, who would both agree with you. But what I would ask you all to be open to is the possibility that consciousness is not limited to the body and can be passed on to future generations. So the choices we make and, therefore, our lives are affected by our most often unconscious awareness of past life experiences. I am not trying to convince anyone of anything, just sharing what I have experienced and can believe. To me the key is that if it helps me to live a better life now then it is useful and helpful. So follow your intuitions and do what feels right. It just makes me think of some kids who play the piano, paint portraits and are brilliant in certain areas when they are a few years old. Could it be a past life experience that is manifesting in them? There are cases where children have shared stories with their parents of a past life and when the parents researched it found their children were describing events that did happen. I also see this in drawings by patients of

all ages where they draw the past, present and future. I know this from the events that later happen to them in their lives which are already in a drawing done some time before the event. What is important is for all of us to raise the level of consciousness and make the future a better place for our children. How To Grow Your Private Practice With Print Ads Exclusive Interview with Josh Gardner reveals what is working now for Natural Nutmeg Advertisers

S

ince 2004, Josh Gardner’s firm has created over $11,531,323 in advertisements and generated more than 532,889 appointments for his clients. All ads pull more than 3 times the national average. I recently had a chance to sit down with Josh and pick his brain. In this exclusive interview, he reveals the 13 things you need to get good response from readers of Natural Nutmeg Magazine. Diane: “Before we begin, I wanted to ask you what you think of Natural Nutmeg?” Josh: “Hmm. I’m reading between the lines here, Di. You are asking what I think of Natural Nutmeg in terms of readership levels, geographic reach and response rates. Is that right?” Diane: “Since you create ads for a living, then ‘yes.’” Josh: “Simple. I’m a results person. My income depends on whether my clients’ sales increase or their phones are buzzing. In my world, the cash register rings or it doesn’t. Now, you know I emailed your list last week for a client.” Diane: “Yes, what was the response?” Josh: “In a nutshell, we had 49% click-to-conversion rate. These numbers may not mean much to your readers. So let me put them in perspective: The average click to conversion rate (as published by the Direct Marketing Association) is 1.73%. Natural Nutmeg’s e-list converted 28 times better. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s an amazingly profitable response.” Diane: “Really?” Josh: “You must be doing something very right. Your readers and your advertisers really trust you. They read everything you put out – word for word – and they respond when they feel something is valuable. If you are a local health practitioner, you would be crazy not to advertise in Natural Nutmeg.” Diane: “Why do you say that?” Josh: “Because very few publications engender this kind of respect from advertisers and consumers. When you pick up a magazine at a newsstand, do you buy into the crazy headlines or promises? When was the last time you responded to a print ad from a national advertiser? It’s very rare.

10

Natural Nutmeg April 2012

Unlike most health magazines, Natural Nutmeg is not entertainment; it is a credible source of information for Connecticut residents who want to improve their health with instant access to local specialists.” Diane: “That’s a huge compliment coming from you, so thank you. But I have to confess. Before Natural Nutmeg runs an ad, sometimes I have no idea if it will be a success. After keying returns for over 5 years, it’s hard to determine which ad will be a winner. How can I help my advertisers generate better response?” Josh: “Well, there are a few things you need to generate a good response. What works best in print is pretty straightforward. Most private practitioners don’t understand selling. But advertising has one purpose – to sell. So if you can’t sell yourself, how would you know how to design an ad that does? Or, more telling, how do you “hire” someone who knows how to sell, to design your ads?” Diane: “So what you mean is that most advertisements are designed by people that have no idea how to sell?” Josh: “Yes. More than 95% of all ads that you see are worthless. They are designed by technical people – graphic designers and the like. Because most business owners are ‘me too’ advertisers, they hire people just like them.” Diane: “Is Natural Nutmeg a “me too” advertiser? Josh: “No, of course not. Natural Nutmeg is the perfect example of a valuable resource for both consumers and private practitioners. It is timely for Connecticut residents needing help and practical in the way it communicates information so they can make the right decision. Not only can advertisers run print ads in your magazine, they can contribute their thoughts, ideas and knowledge directly to consumers who want to know more about them. In other words, it’s very unique. But I wouldn’t say the same about most advertising.” Diane: “So…can you give me an example of “me too” advertising?” Josh: “Let’s start with your advertisers. There are folks with ads that are very difficult to read and say nothing other than “this is who I am.” Like a glorified business card, “I’m a natural physician.” So what? There are a gazillion people following the same trend. That’s classic “me too” advertising. It gives me absolutely no reason why I should pick up the phone and call you for an appointment. Does that make sense?”

Diane: “Yes, it does. Now that you mention it, what does your business card say? Josh: “Very funny. I have several. But one in particular is a good example of communicating a very strong “reasons why” message right in the name of the product. This card calls out to a specific audience; it gets your attention because it promises something that everyone wants. It is simple, practical and focused. And it establishes my expertise, credibility and authority in three words or less.”

“(2) Your headline must call out to your audience and grab their attention. It must be simple and easy to understand. And it needs to make a “sensible” promise for resolving a problem that you can deliver on. If possible, your headline should establish your authority and expertise. Its ONLY purpose is to get people to read your ad. So make it newsworthy and intriguing.” Diane: “Ok. I get that. What’s next?”

Diane: “Alright. But I’m just dying to know. Will you share this later?”

Josh: “(3) The subhead. Your subhead intensifies the power of your main headline to draw people into your copy. These are the most “read” parts of any ad. They are workhorses. Spend 85% of your time on them.” Josh: “(4) Now, if you are in private practice, put a clean headshot on your ad. As someone who sees patients face-to-face, you need to anticipate the discomfort people will feel “not knowing” you. Your relationship is intimate. And your ads should be the same. They will want to know that you are reputable, professional and honest.”

Josh: “If your readers and advertisers want to know, they will need to call you. My firm is crushed with work…Anyway, I’ll give you an example. Is that fair?”

Josh: “(5) And that you have integrity. This means that you do what you say. You keep your word and your promises. And you are accessible to them.”

Diane: “Yes. If you were a health practitioner, what name would you register?”

Diane: “Can you give me an example of “integrity” for private practitioners?”

Josh: “If I was competing with the other physicians in your magazine, I would sharpen my focus. There is a big category of advertiser missing in your magazine. I’m actually kind of shocked because it is something I would want myself.”

Josh: “Sure. If you are selling age-reversing diets, you must look much younger than your actual age. I can’t emphasize this enough: how people respond to your visual image is your most important proof element other than patient success stories, local endorsements and scientific evidence. Remember that people judge you instantly. If they think you have an honest, kind face, they keep reading. Prove it works just by looking the part.”

Diane: “Ok. So are you going to tell me what it is or not?” Josh: “This interview isn’t about me. It’s about you. So let’s focus on Natural Nutmeg advertisers and what they can do to get more appointments.”

Diane: “Go on.” Josh: “Diet Plans That Get People Off Medications. Then, I’d follow a trend. There is a ton of good press on “plant based” diets and how beneficial they are. The proof is overwhelming in terms of weight loss, lower rates of heart disease, cancer and hypertension. It’s a no brainer.” Diane: “I’m following you. That makes sense. And the name is?” Josh: “WholeHealthDiets.com or StatinFreeDiets.com if you wanted to flag a specific demographic of baby boomers trying to get off medication. It’s a big promise and most people on medication really want to be off of it. You wouldn’t own the domain name unless you could deliver. So it grabs your attention and makes you an expert in something people want in 3 simple words.” Josh: (1) Now not every one of your advertisers can pull this off, but owning a name that promises a real benefit and establishes your authority is a very strong message. As my physician, I need to know that I can trust you.” Diane: “I see that. What do you think private practitioners need in their ads to get Natural Nutmeg readers to pick up the phone and call them?” Josh: “Let’s start with this: The structure of your ad is important. Even if your ad is basic, you must follow basic rules. Every time I ignore them, I lose money. Ignore these principles at your own peril:”

Diane: “That brings up a good point. Some doctors don’t look healthy, but they sell advice on health. Are you saying that my advertisers can’t get away with it?” Josh: “Well this interview is about maximizing response. I think that you would agree if Dr. Oz weighed 320 lbs, no one would take him seriously. Maybe he would be a good contestant for The Biggest Loser. But he wouldn’t have millions of people waiting in line to buy his health books.” Diane: “Ok. I get it. What else?” Josh: “(6) Every other design element, photo, caption, color, logo, layout has one purpose: to get you to read the copy. The more hypnotic and compelling your ad, the more likely Natural Nutmeg readers will read it and come to a favorable conclusion about you.” “(7) Make sure your pictures tell a complete story. Learn to think visually about how your new patients are feeling (Why they stay with you has less to do with why they came in the first place). (8) That’s why, when you use testimonials in an ad, they should speak to a measurable result and not that you are “a really nice person.”

NaturalNutmeg.com

11

Diane: “So what you are saying is that new practitioners advertise in Natural Nutmeg because their sales increase, not because I’m nice.” Josh: “(9) Exactly. Likability is important, but it is not enough. You need to demonstrate that your product is valuable. Show them only tangible, measurable results. And you have so many successes.” Diane: “Like Melissa Martin?” Josh: “Definitely. That’s a great story. Think about it: she wrote a brilliant article and ran an ad for $375. She got 13 new clients and generated $7000 in sales in one month from a single ad. I would advertise immediately knowing how Natural Nutmeg helps its advertisers and how responsive its readers are.” (10) Also, position your practice to appeal to the patient’s strongest need. Your ad must give life to an unspoken feeling, fear, hope or desire and demonstrate enough proof that you can help them get closer to a resolution. When your reader feels like you have done both, they start dialing your number.” Diane: “I follow that. So how do you know which appeal is the strongest?” Josh: “(11) Unfortunately, most profitable advertising is like a great cocktail: 1 part inspiration and 3 parts testing. Just because you have a great appeal doesn’t mean you sell more. You may need to test more than one to strike oil.” Diane: “So I’ve got their attention. I’ve established a connection. They think I’m credible and believe that I can make them feel better. What’s next?” Josh: “Glad you asked. Because this is definitely the most important part of your ad. It’s something that you can’t be without. Every great advertisement has one, even if it is buried into the message. Do you know what I’m referring to?” Diane: “I think so.” Josh: “(12) An Offer. You need to make an offer they can hardly refuse.” Diane: “Can you give me an example?” Josh: “OK. The best offers do several things. They put “you” at risk, rather than the buyer. This is much more than a guarantee. It’s beyond that. When they read your guarantee, it makes them feel guilty. Almost like they would be taking advantage of you by accepting your offer.” Josh: “They inject scarcity. They restrict access and by doing so increase sales.” Josh: “They build value. Almost excessively. In the case of a practitioner, the offer is enriching enough to cause people to take action. Right then and there. Pick up the phone and book an appointment.”

12

Natural Nutmeg April 2012

Diane: “Is there anything else?” Josh: “(13) Yes. You need to make it very easy for people to buy from you. Response devices need to be obvious, graphical, large and easy to read. Give people several options including cutting out a coupon, calling a phone number, opting in on your home page. Think ‘easy, simple, obvious, do it now.’” Diane: “…Josh, this has been fantastic! I can’t believe how much valuable information you have provided in one interview. Should we make an offer, then?” Josh: “What do you think?” Diane: “How could I not after all of this great information! So, here it is... If you are in private practice or starting one and you want to advertise in Natural Nutmeg…Josh has agreed to share his response-boosting tactics with any new advertisers that place an ad in our June and July issues. Simply call 860-206-9500 and ask for me personally. You will be invited to join Josh and myself for a private workshop where he will teach you “How To Design Ads That Make The Phone Ring.” You’ll get to ask him questions and work with him 1-on-1 to position your practice for success. And, you get Josh’s free guide to digital advertising just for attending. It is chock full of trade secrets not available to the general public. He will only share them with new advertisers that attend this private workshop and place their ad in our June or July issues. Diane: “But there’s more.” Josh: “Yes. And it’s a big one.” Diane: “I’m also going to give all new advertisers a FREE Trackable 800 number on their ads. Calls will automatically redirect to your practice phone. At the same time, you will get an email with Caller ID, name and time stamp so you will know for certain who is calling from your ad. You will never miss a chance to talk to someone even if they don’t leave a message.” Diane: “And I’m so confident that we can grow your practice that I am guaranteeing every dollar you spend. If you don’t get results, we will refund your money with no questions asked. Josh: “Wow, Di, that’s a superb offer. But you forgot something important.” Diane: “Oh yes, if you want “in,” you must call 860-206-9500. There are very limited spaces in this workshop and Josh only has time to run one workshop before your ad is published. Right now, we have 24 seats available. Consider This: Natural Nutmeg reaches 125,000 people. Like you, they are in private practice and reading this offer. If you are serious about growing your practice, you need to call 860-2069500. Once all the spaces are filled, we will not take on any more attendees. So be the first by calling 860-206-9500.

Recovery from Autism IS a Reality By Ayelet Connell-Giammatteo, Ph.D., P.T., I.M.T.,C.

R

ecovery from Autism is becoming more and more of a reality. While the road to recovery is long, we have found, having worked with many children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), that there’s a common theme among those who recover; a multi-disciplinary program. Many of these programs include Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy in school and at home, Sensory Integration, a biomedical approach involving IV nutrition and chelation therapy such as the DAN method, elimination diets such as a gluten and casein free diet, Homeopathy, Hyperbaric Oxygen, and much more. Every child with Autism is different, in terms of history, age of onset, behavioral presentation, as well as level of health. This leads to a greater need for diversity in treatment programs. One child may present with high levels of mercury in their body, while another might have high levels of yeast. Each test leads to a different treatment, all of which may be valuable. With all of our studies, we have found that a comprehensive program leads to the greatest recovery.

As you can already see, there are many treatment interventions to choose from. Many tools utilize a functional approach to reduce autistic behaviors. Other tools are structural in nature and work to reduce these behaviors by improving the health of the body. A helpful analogy to illustrate the difference between structural and functional therapies is to imagine a child sitting in front of a piano. Let’s assume that the child does not know how to play the piano. If we teach the child how to play the piano, then the music should sound great. But what if the piano was out of tune or broken? No amount of piano lessons would lead to great music because the piano wasn’t functional. However, if the approach was to fix the piano and then teach the child how to play, then the music would have the potential to sound wonderful. In this scenario, teaching the child how to play the piano is considered a functional intervention. Fixing the piano illustrates a structural intervention. Both categories of treatment are important for a child or adult on the spectrum. Some of the more common

interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorder, along with some less known modalities are reviewed in this article.

A Biomedical Approach A biomedical approach for treatment of autism involves instituting comprehensive nutritional and dietary changes in a person’s life, including potential IV nutrition, chelation therapy, and other types of supplemental therapies based on comprehensive diagnostic testing. These diagnostics can include blood, urine, stool, and hair analyses. The most well known example of a biomedical approach would be the DAN model—Defeat Autism Now. This model of treatment is important because so often, the underlying problem is immune and digestion related. Most persons with autism have immune deficiency and an impaired ability for detoxification which involves the liver and processing of toxins. Frequently, these children have a history of recurrent ear infections and sinus issues as well as multiple allergies. This is evidence of an underlying toxic load and immune dysfunction in the body. Treating the underlying immune dysfunction nutritionally is essential for providing the body with a healthy foundation. It is common to hear about children with autism on a Gluten-Free Diet. A Gluten-Free Diet is one of the more common dietary recommendations given to a child with Autism. Gluten is found in wheat, rye, barley, and oat. Gluten is pro-inflammatory. This means that when eaten, gluten will contribute to increased inflammation in the body, specifically in the body’s weakest systems. Most children with Autism already have digestive issues such as reflux, constipation,

abdominal cramping, gas, and more. When gluten is consumed, the underlying problem may worsen. Often, when gluten is removed from the diet, many digestive problems disappear. In addition to affecting the gut, gluten can also contribute to increased inflammation in the brain. Some children on the spectrum manifest aggressive behaviors secondary to dysfunction of their limbic system in the brain. Also, many children with autism have hypersensitivity to sound, secondary to compression of the inner ear. All of these problems can worsen with increased inflammation. A key to addressing immune dysfunction is reducing inflammation in the body. Some foods are pro-inflammatory to everyone, such as gluten, while other foods are pro-inflammatory to some depending on their individual allergies. It is important to identify these foods and eliminate them from the person’s diet to allow for the recovery process to be unencumbered. Reducing inflammation in the body by changing one’s diet may not, on its own, lead to recovery from autism, but it is an important component to the healing process. In addition to introducing healthier foods and nutritional supplements, it is equally important to implement other forms of structural therapy aimed at improving the integrity and resiliency of the digestive system and the liver.

Integrative Manual Therapy A Structural Therapy Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT) is a manual (hands-on) approach to treatment of pain, disability, and disease. Developed by Sharon Giammatteo, PhD, PT, IMT,C over the past 30 years, IMT is a new approach to health care, that generally involves gentle manipulative techniques to promote tissue repair, normalize structure, and restore function. IMT practitioners identify and address the underlying causes of dysfunction using a comprehensive and holistic approach. IMT treatment techniques are based on the premise that the body has the potential to self-correct or heal itself under the right circumstances. Unique to IMT is the integration of manual therapy techniques for all systems in the body (i.e. bone, nerve, fascia, muscle, organ, lymph and circulatory systems). Since each tissue type in the body has unique requirements for healing, tissue-specific techniques are used to yield optimal results. Often, multiple systems are addressed to facilitate recovery, as a dysfunction in one system may influence or be influenced by a problem in another system. This is common with someone who is on the Autism Spectrum. In the field of IMT and structural therapy, performing a thorough assessment is important to discover underlying problems in the body that very likely are contributing to the person’s functional challenges. In the case of Autism, these ‘functional’ challenges could be behavioral, learning based, socialization, and more.

Auditory Integration Training (AIT) A Functional Approach Auditory Integration Training (AIT) is a functional therapy that focuses on treatment of sensory dysfunction and auditory processing. AIT was developed by Dr. Guy Berard in France. It retrains the auditory system using music and sound. Children who have undergone AIT treatment have experienced a reduction in hypersensitivity to sound as well as an overall reduction of sensory dysfunction. Many children who manifest autistic behaviors and sensory problems suffer from severe compression of their inner ear and vestibular mechanism. Considering the difference between functional and structural therapies and the important relationship between the two, if a child has severe compression of the inner ear, implementing a functional NaturalNutmeg.com

therapy to reduce inner ear related sensory problems is important. However, initially or simultaneously introducing structural therapy such as IMT to correct the inner ear compression is beneficial to allow for the functional AIT therapy to work optimally.

Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Therapy—A Functional Therapy Applied behavioral analysis was founded by Dr. Ivar Lovaas and is rooted in the concept that behavior is affected by the environment. ABA therapy uses behaviorist methods to teach social and behavioral skills to children on the autism spectrum. It is a treatment that requires repetition and integration into all environments, including the home environment. This type of intervention falls into the functional therapy category because it involves education and training of the person using an immersion method. ABA therapy is a tool that can be successful in helping children on the spectrum reach their potential, but what if their potential for normal behavior is lower because of body dysfunction, for example, inner ear compression or inflammation in the brain or gut? The benefits of these functional therapies for a child with autism spectrum disorder can be greatly increased when structural therapies such as IMT and comprehensive nutritional therapies are integrated into the child’s program.

Example: Hypersensitivity to Sound Let’s examine some autistic behaviors to further illustrate the difference between structural and functional therapies. Let’s begin with hypersensitivity to sound. It is common knowledge that many children with Autism have a history of recurrent ear infections and allergies. In the field of IMT there

are many patterns of dysfunction that have been identified in the body. The discovery of these patterns has led to the development of many treatment protocols. One commonly found pattern in children with Autism is severe compression of the inner ear. Within the inner ear, there are multiple important structures for hearing, including the cochlea, ear drum, vestibular nerve, and more. When combined into the vestibular mechanism, these structures are not much larger then a peanut. They reside inside the ear, bordering the temporal bone. When there is severe compression, this peanut sized vestibular mechanism within the inner ear pushes up against the temporal bone. This can contribute to significant hypersensitivity to sound. Often, the child may have headaches, and very likely does not have the ability to express them. Much of their behavior may be secondary to this dysfunction. A functional approach to addressing the hypersensitivity to sound may be AIT (mentioned above), a form of music therapy. AIT can be very successful when used at the appropriate time, but if there is severe compression of the inner ear the benefits of AIT are limited. However, if IMT as a structural therapy is utilized first to help decompress the inner ear, then the functional therapies have a greater potential to work. Often, the IMT alone can help to reduce and even correct the hypersensitivity to sound. But in the more severe cases, the functional therapies are very important to support the re-education of the region.

Example: Aggressive Behaviors When considering aggressive behaviors, the solution may seem more complex for a number of reasons. first, it may be challenging to work with an aggressive child. Second, aggressive behaviors stem from a specific part of the brain, the limbic system.

The limbic system is the core part of our brain—the part of the brain that we share with animals—the reptilian brain. This is the part of our brain associated with survival mode and rage response. When the limbic system is in a state of dysfunction, a range of behaviors may surface, including aggressive behaviors such as self-injurious behavior as well as aggression to others, obsessive compulsive behaviors, and more. IMT is a wonderful tool to treat the limbic system when it is in a state of dysfunction. A common functional approach to treatment of these behaviors is ABA therapy or some type of behavioral modification. The challenge with these functional approaches is that the aggressive behaviors are reflexive—there is no voluntary thought process involved. Consider the example of a lion that has been shot, but not killed. It wants to destroy everyone and everything in its path. The lion is not thinking about consequences. Similarly, children with Autism who lash out are not thinking about consequences. They are purely acting on a reflex from their limbic system. Whereas ABA therapy can be very effective in helping to develop normal behaviors through repetition and role modeling, aggressive behaviors are rarely reduced with this approach. But when used in combination with IMT, there can be reduction and even elimination of aggressive behaviors.

and adults with autism spectrum disorder is remarkably higher than it has ever been in the past – especially when a combination of appropriate structural and functional therapies are employed. ccording to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the autism spectrum disorder includes autistic disorder (classic autism), Asperger syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (or atypical autism). Autism is a developmental disorder distinguished by deficits in communication, interaction, and cognition. By definition the onset is prior to age 3. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) states that in order for autism to be diagnosed, certain criteria must be met. The details of those criteria are beyond the scope of this article, however, the gist is the following: Qualitative impairment in social interaction, qualitative impairments in communication, and restricted repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests and activities. Delays or abnormal functioning in at least one of the following areas, with onset prior to age 3 years: (1) social interaction, (2) language as used in social communication, or (3) symbolic or imaginative play. The disturbance also must not be better accounted for by Rett’s Disorder or Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. Above is the technical jargon. What are some of the common signs, symptoms, characteristics and conditions? Anxiety, attention deficit, distractibility, hyperactivity, impulsivity, rhythmic rocking, repetitive acts or thoughts, abnormal eye movement, doesn’t play peek-a-boo, highly gifted, apparent lack of awareness to danger, language and communication problems, seems uninterested in people, unresponsive to verbal cues, allergies, poor appetite, low immunity/ frequent colds, heavy metal toxicity and hypersensitivity to sound/ light/touch/smell/toxins. Please note that if your child exhibits some or many of these, that does not mean s/he has autism spectrum disorder (ASD). An appropriate work-up must be done by a trained and certified neuropsychiatrist (usually a PsyD). The number of children diagnosed has skyrocketed over the last decade. A 2009 article in the journal Pediatrics estimates that 1 out of 91 individuals can be diagnosed with ASD. It occurs four times more in males than females. Many people wonder how the prevalence of Autism could possibly have increased more than tenfold over the past 20 years. Three main answers arise: a) awareness and diagnostic workup is much more prevalent and sophisticated; b) more than ever the fetus and developing infants are exposed to

chemicals and; c) women are having children later in life and genetics—all of which increase the probability of ASD. On the exposure front, there are more than 83,000 chemicals registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Most of these have not been thoroughly tested for their effects on human health. The Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) 2011 National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals (NHANES), Fourth Report, presented data on 212 chemicals, including 75 measured for the first time in the U.S. population. In January 2010, a study by the University of California San Francisco confirmed that pregnant women carry multiple chemicals in their bodies that can be passed on to their fetus. Published in Environmental Health Perspectives, the study evaluated data collected by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2003-2004. Overall, 43 banned as well as currently used chemicals – including PCBs, organochlorine pesticides, PFCs, phenols, PBDE flame retardants, and phthalates – were detected in 99-100% of more than 250 pregnant women. Furthermore, the women in the study were tested for exposure to only a fraction of chemicals on the market, therefore suggesting that pregnant women are probably carrying and passing on to their fetuses many more chemicals than have been reported here. While the etiologies of ASD remain unknown, what we do know is that there are many concurrent medical problems which could exacerbate the disorder. For example, recent evidence reveals increased oxidative stress, decreased methylation capacity and transsulfuration (ability to detoxify), mitochondrial dysfunction (problems with being able to produce energy), increased toxic metal burden, intestinal dysbiosis (more bad guys in the gut than good guys) skewed toward an overgrowth of Clostridia species, immune dysregulation and hypoperfusion (low blood supply and flow) to the brain, just to name a few. Some studies suggest 88% of autistic children have lymphoid nodular hyperplasia in the GI tract, showing a chronic state of gastrointestinal inflammation. ASD is best managed via a multidimensional and multidisciplinary approach. The most efficient and effective approach is to assemble a team that works together in the best interest of the patient and family. While the team might include a pediatrician with special

training and expertise in ASD, an occupational therapist, a behavioral therapist, a speech therapist, a physical therapist and a naturopathic physician, they would be introduced on an as-needed basis. ASD is an area where integrative medicine, particularly naturopathic and Ayurvedic medicines shine. The lenses with which these two systems of medicine view health and well-being enable all of the aforementioned co-morbidities to be addressed effectively. The types of testing that would be conducted by these types of physicians can be simple or complex, depending on the needs of the individual. Naturopathic treatment options include diet modifications and removing any potential allergies and sensitivities. Nutritional and immune support is a must and the tools at our disposal are almost infinite. Lifestyle modifications might also be suggested by some of the aforementioned therapists. Homeopathy is an efficacious, noninvasive, non-contraindicated, non-medication-interacting system of medicine that takes the person’s mental, physical and emotional states into account, and matches those with a particular homeopathic remedy to treat all of the symptoms and issues at once. Other naturopathic treatments would include treating the gastrointestinal dysbiosis and restoring the gastrointestinal tract to optimal digestion and health. Improving the person’s ability to detoxify as well as removing any potential heavy metals, as these are known neuroendocrine disruptors, can significantly improve health and behavioral outcomes. Physical medicine modalities may be employed such as hydrotherapy, soft tissue manipulation (massage), craniosacral therapy, spinal manipulation and/or acupuncture. Biotherapeutic drainage can also be employed and is practiced extensively at our clinic. This is a process of detoxifying the body by opening the emunctories (organs of elimination; ex-liver, kidney, lung) and then excreting the toxic accumulations. Unlike “detoxing”

corrects function and optimizes all cells, tissues and organs in the body, including the brain and central nervous system. We have been utilizing this system of medicine for about 5 years now to treat conditions of all types and have seen tremendous results. Ayurveda is a system of traditional medicine native to India that was established more than 5,000 years ago and is still used today in all parts of the world. In Sanskrit, the word Ayurveda is comprised of ayus, meaning ‘life’ and veda, meaning ‘science.’ As the name suggests, Ayurveda is the science of life, encompassing all aspects of our being to address underlying disease to help relieve symptoms, prevent or eradicate disease and achieve optimal health in our mental, physical, emotional and spiritual planes. Ayurveda is a multi-faceted treatment approach that involves changes in nutrition and lifestyle. In combination with a naturopathic approach to detoxification, Ayurveda has a 5,000 year-old treatment that is extremely effective, called Pancha Karma (PK). This is a cleansing and rejuvenation program. It involves five major cleansing treatments and is divided into three phases: 1. Poorva Karma - Preparation for Pancha Karma 2. Pancha Karma – Main detox 3. Pashchatya Karma - Post Pancha Karma The purpose of this process is to stimulate the layers of toxins from the body and bring them to the places where they can be excreted. After PK treatments, one will likely experience significant health improvements in a relatively short time. Yoga as a form of exercise can be used in children with ASD by addressing their physical and sensory issues. The practice of

yoga improves muscle strength and tone, and helps children become aware of their placement of arms, legs and feet in comparison to the rest of their body. The additional physical strength also helps to improve coordination. Many children with ASD may have sensitivities to lights, noise, smells, texture and taste, causing them to become agitated. Yoga can help decrease the amount of sensory stimulation they experience by decreasing their anxiety, releasing energy and calming down their burdened system. Breathing Exercise can also be very helpful. Alternate Nostril Breathing (Anuloma Viloma) is easy to use and employ at any time. This exercise affects your autonomic nervous system (the one we have no conscious control over). The mind is being used directly to regulate the breath, allowing the body to learn to self-regulate. Being centered has to do with balancing the energy on the left and right sides of the body, an important part of self-healing. Below is how to practice: 1. Use your right hand to close your right nostril with your thumb 2. Inhale through the left nostril 3. Hold the breath, closing both nostrils 4. Exhale through the right nostril, while keeping the left nostril closed 5. Inhale through the right nostril, while keeping the left nostril closed 6. Hold the breath, closing both nostrils 7. Repeat this exercise for up to 10 minutes, twice daily Examples of traditional Ayurvedic herbs that have proven useful in ASD (along with many other conditions) are Bacopa mon-

niera, also known as Bacopa or “Brahmi,” which has been used in Ayurveda for centuries. It has been traditionally used as a brain tonic to help enhance memory development, learning and concentration. A double-blind placebo-controlled investigation was carried out to study the effects of Bacopa extract after a 90-day trial. The results of this study showed that Bacopa significantly improved performance of the working memory, more specifically the spatial working memory. Our working memory is the ability to actively hold information in the mind to perform complex tasks such as reasoning, comprehension, and learning. Other potential useful herbs are calamus, gotu kola, rosemary and ginkgo. All of the above may seem overwhelming and daunting. Autism spectrum disorder is a very complex and challenging condition that should not be underestimated. An example of the power that the above diagnostic and treatment strategies can yield comes from when Dr. Born was a medical student and precepting with a naturopath in Seattle, WA. A woman brought in her two daughters, the older of whom was autistic. They were ages 5 and 8. What stood out to Dr. Born was that the 5 year old looked and acted much more like an 8 year old; even physically she was taller. The 8 year old was essentially non-verbal and barely communicative. She would mostly just play with the same toy and push the car around the track. There was no eye contact, no engagement, and she definitely did not like to be touched. The look in the mother’s eyes was devastating. After about 8 months of biotherapeutic drainage, treating the dysbiosis, healing the gastrointestinal inflammation, and a well chosen homeopathic remedy, the girl “woke up.” She was more engaged, made eye contact, didn’t mind being held by her mom and was speaking in mostly full sentences. Dr. Born moved on from that preceptorship and from Seattle, but last time he spoke with that physician he learned the girl is still making steady progress towards a more “normal” life. He has taken that experience, along with others, and implemented them into his practice and has seen tremendous results. Dr. Born and Dr. Jones are licensed naturopathic physicians in Avon, CT, and are active members of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. They practice at Whole Health Associates, LLC, which is located in the Farmington Valley and offers natural medicine care for the entire family, including naturopathic medicine, chiropractic care, acupuncture, and massage therapy. Taking Care

With Cynthia Ebanks, R.N. Providing, support, guidance and inspiration for families challenged by illness, injury and dementia.

Making the Choice for Care Making the decision to turn to home care for yourself or a loved one is a great first step to improving quality of life. One of the first and most important decisions is what level of home care is needed. The most important thing to consider is the client’s needs. The various levels of service such as companion homemaking, personal care or dementia care, are tailored to the different levels of need. An initial assessment should be able to determine the level of care that is needed for you or your loved one. When deciding between 24-hour live-in care and hourly options, often it appears to client’s families that the 24-hour live-in care is more cost effective. This is not always the case. There are hidden costs to adding a full-time resident to a house such as electricity, water, and other utilities will increase. There are also non-monetary but no less real costs as well: having to share food preparation, living space, kitchen and bathroom facilities, etc. When everything is considered, you may find yourself asking what is really being saved versus hourly care. Live-in care may not be appropriate for some clients. Members of the household will need to be able to accept sharing space with a “stranger,” which is not always possible. Ultimately, the real question you have to ask is: “What is going to meet my loved one’s needs?” Listen to the messages and always act from a place of love and concern

An Interview with Judith Orloff, MD on her New York Times Bestseller, “Emotional Freedom” By Diane Hindman, PhD

J

udith Orloff, MD, is a psychiatrist and intuition expert who synthesizes the pearls of traditional medicine with cutting-edge knowledge of intuition, energy, and spirituality to create a new blend of healing wisdom. She passionately believes that the future of medicine depends upon integrating all these elements to achieve emotional freedom and total wellness. Her latest book is “Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself From Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life” (Three Rivers Press, 2011). Diane: What is emotional freedom, and why is it so important for society today? Dr. Orloff: Emotional freedom is your ability to love by cultivating positive emotions and being able to compassionately witness and transform negative ones, whether they’re yours or another’s. This skill liberates you from fear and lets you navigate adversity without attacking someone, losing your cool, or being derailed by negativity. With emotional freedom you can choose to react constructively rather than relinquishing command of the situation when your buttons get pushed. Diane: What does it mean to be “energy-sensitive”? Dr. Orloff: Many sensitive people come to me who’ve been labeled “overly sensitive.” These people, including me, are what I call “emotional empaths.” Because we are so sensitive, we absorb the energy of others. We sense their fear, anxiety, and stress and take them into our bodies. Then we get exhausted or feel ill ourselves. As a child, I couldn’t go into shopping malls or crowded places because I’d walk in fine and then walk out exhausted or with some ache or pain I didn’t have before. I didn’t realize what was happening. But as I’ve matured intuitively and as a physician, I’ve realized that people on a spiritual path tend to gain more sensitivity as they develop. Thus, they need to learn how not to absorb outside energy so they can feel joyous and free. This book discusses how to be compassionate but stay centered without becoming an emotional sponge. Diane: How can Emotional Freedom teach us to cope with difficult people or situations in a calmer manner? Dr. Orloff: There’s a chapter on emotional vampires, which is my term for many difficult people—for instance, a criticizer, a victim, a narcissist, or a controller. I say, let them be our teachers, rather than tormentors. We must ask ourselves: How do they teach us to communicate with more heart and better boundaries? How can we deal differently with feeling irritated, controlled, or insulted? The old way is to get nasty or withdraw. The new way is to simply not react when your buttons get pushed—a behavior that perpetuates war.

22

Practice what I call “the namaste effect,” which is,”I respect the spirit within you even if I don’t like what you’re doing.” Your victories over emotional vampires are not small—they’re huge. With every success, you are creating more hope for the world. From an intuitive standpoint, we are all interconnected: my emotional freedom affects your emotional freedom which affects everyone in the world. Diane: In the book, you also define four emotional types. What are they and what can they tell us about ourselves? Dr. Orloff: They are “the intellectual,” “the empath,” “the gusher,” and “the rock.” These are the filters through which you see the world—the default setting of your personality to which you revert, especially under stress. Each type is determined by inborn temperament, upbringing, and perhaps karma. Since emotional freedom means being able to remain sensitive but centered in an overwhelming world, it’s essential to know your emotional type. Without this knowledge, many people dysfunctionally hunker down in their type for decades without examining which aspects do and don’t serve them. Diane: What can dreams teach us about emotional freedom? Dr. Orloff: Sleep and dreams are a conduit for emotional freedom. Sleep is a great awakener because your linear mind quiets down, and you enter a purely intuitive state where you can better understand your emotions and other realms. Dreams are revolutionary states of consciousness that impart intuitive wisdom about being free. Here’s a personal example. Once, I went through a period of complaining a lot when nothing was working. Projects were falling through, patients were canceling appointments, I couldn’t even get the plumber to come and fix the toilet. I was in victim mode. Then I had a dream in which my deceased father came to me, and he was moving from one location to another. I asked, “Daddy, is there anything I can get you?” Smiling, he said, “No, darling, I don’t need anything except a pen and a piece of paper in case I want to write a thank-you note.” For me, this was a wake-up call that highlighted the importance of gratefulness here and in the Hereafter. It was all I needed to adjust my attitude to being more grateful for my life.

Diane: How can your book help us overcome fear during times of terrorism, economic turmoil, and natural disasters? Dr. Orloff: To be free, we must view fear as something to overcome, not something to be defeated by. When you see a world with so much to be afraid of—skyrocketing gas prices, the failing economy, and violence—you must choose not to come from fear. Part of emotional freedom is making a vow not to lead a fear-driven life. That must be a deep desire in your heart. Then do everything possible to overcome fear and worry with faith in goodness, and trying to stay in the moment rather than catastrophizing the future. I’ll show you how to develop the courage to be centered and find non-fear based solutions to anything! Courage or fear is a choice. It’s not something that just happens to you. Diane: You say emotional freedom offers us opportunities to be heroes in our own lives. What do you mean by that? Dr. Orloff: If you suffer loss, if you’re having an anxiety attack or feeling depressed or lonely—these are all very spiritual experiences to me. You become a hero in your own life as you learn to use emotions as a chance to become stronger, brighter, more. This is critical on a personal level because it frees you from suffering. But it’s just as important on a collective level because if we don’t face the fear and anger in ourselves, then we risk projecting it onto a global sphere. This creates war and massive suffering to our human family. We must find inner peace before we can have outer peace. That’s why I consider emotional freedom an inner peace movement. Judith Orloff MD, an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA and intuition expert, is author of the New York Times Bestseller Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself From Negative Emotions and Transform Your Life (Three Rivers Press, 2011) Her other bestsellers are Positive Energy, Intuitive Healing, and Second Sight. www.drjudithorloff.com. Take Charge of Your Health By Ann Aresco, ND

T

he TV in the living room just isn’t cutting it anymore. So what do we do? It’s a big purchase, so of course we research before buying. We go online, read reviews, and start shopping around to see what’s out there. So why don’t we invest that time when it comes to our health?

Patients Should Not Partake In One Stop Shopping With Their Health Shouldn’t you know what the various treatment choices are before you make a decision on your health care? Everyone should. There is never just one answer when it comes to a health care problem. The best medical professionals, whether they are MDs or NDs, realize that it takes an entire team of professionals to diagnose, treat, and support the health of an individual. Our health is a mosaic of many components: diet, exercise, hydration, vitamins, sleep, prescriptions, medical tests, monitoring, and perhaps wellness treatments such as chiropractic care and acupuncture.

How Is Naturopathic Medicine Different? In the holistic view of medicine, high blood pressure isn’t just high blood pressure, and heartburn isn’t just heartburn. These are messages that your body is sending to get your attention so that you can correct whatever imbalance is causing it, not just the symptoms that you are experiencing right now. In naturopathic medicine, we address the underlying cause. We are always searching for the patients’ perfect balance. A shared mission among naturopathic physicians is prevention. Ideally, before creating a treatment plan for an acute condition, a prevention plan is first put into place.

But in reality, most patients come in to see a naturopathic doctor after a health condition is already present. This last resort approach to health care is one that can be avoided by taking charge of your health and doing your homework. NDs encourage and support patient independence by providing not only knowledge, but also an arsenal for patients to self-treat reoccurring conditions. Everyone’s toolbox will be different, but it could contain natural remedies, supplements, vitamins, or nutritional suggestions. For example, if your child has numerous ear infections every winter, or you suffer from chronic bronchitis, there are many proven and successful alternative solutions. An ND can teach you how to prevent and also treat your own conditions. This reduces a doctor-patient codependency and promotes empowerment through self-awareness and care.

Why Should You Choose Naturopathic Medicine Over All Others? You shouldn’t, unless it works for you. Many patients are looking into alternatives for their healthcare, and they should. Experienced and confident NDs know and understand that the ability to work as a team with MDs and other professionals is invaluable when it comes to achieving overall health and wellness. It’s so refreshing when a new patient says, “I’d like to speak to you about my health issue, and the type of care that you’d recommend. I am on a fact finding mission to determine how I will treat my condition, and naturopathic medicine is just one of the options that I am looking into. The final decision on my healthcare will be mine.” This approach is refreshingly smart, and any veteran ND would not be offended, but rather pleased with this take-charge approach and sense of ownership over one’s health. Speaking personally, I know that I am not the end all and be all of medicine. I know that no one else is either. I have healed many people successfully, and I will continue to do so. But my main goal when a new patient comes in is to teach them everything that they should consider when it comes to handling their health today and tomorrow.

So How Do You Take Charge Of Your Health? Get educated. Go online, read articles from reliable sources, ask questions, and be skeptical, yet inquisitive. Often people find that there are many holistic health alternatives, but then don’t know what to do with the plethora of information. That’s okay. Hang on to that knowledge, and take it with you as you search for a licensed professional who can address your needs and answer your questions. If you need to make a healthcare decision, don’t make it based on what others have told you. Find out for yourself. Acupuncture may have been the answer for your friend; it doesn’t mean it will be the answer for you. You should look into it and decide for yourself if it will work on your body.

Get Started Today: Here are some quick tips for taking charge of your own health, right now: eat a balanced diet, choose whole foods as opposed to processed foods, buy organic, drink 6-8 glasses of water per day, and exercise. Does this advice sound too cliché? You’d be amazed at the number of health issues that can be solved by simply staying hydrated and becoming more physically fit. Take a closer look at yourself; are you REALLY drinking enough water? Think of these basics as the foundation of your home, and before you can build upon anything, it’s critical to have that solid base. Try something safe and natural. For example, if your allergies are getting out of control, try local, unpasteurized honey. We’ve all heard that this can be an amazing remedy. Yet how many have actually tried it? Is a daily dose of honey the answer for all allergy sufferers? Probably not, there are many types of allergies and many treatments. But it can’t hurt to try and many people don’t even give honey a chance. How does it work? Honey can desensitize the immune system from environmental elements that cause allergies in the body. When the gut is presented with a minuscule dose of allergens that don’t cause any harm, the body learns to self-adjust to these elements and stops the process of the allergic reaction. Try honey in yogurt, or over granola or fruit. If you use honey in tea, make sure that the water isn’t too hot; wait until the tea is cool enough to drink before adding the honey. Try honey any time of year, but especially before allergy season gets into full swing to prevent the onset of symptoms. To find local honey, visit: www.ct.gov/doag/cwp/view. asp?a=3260&q=399066 or check with your local farmer, orchard, or health food store. The best thing that we can all do for our health is take action and make smart health decisions, whether it’s exploring and learning about alternative medicine or simply googling about how to prevent a condition before the ailment is full blown. Genetics, Detoxification and Autism By Vicki Kobliner, MS, RD, CD-N

A

utism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder affected by a multitude of genetic and environmental influences. The strong genetic component is widely accepted due to the frequency of autism in identical twins and the fact that children with autism are 10 times more likely to have a sibling with the disorder than typical children. However, it has been said that in the case of autism and many other chronic diseases, genes are the loaded gun and environment pulls the trigger. In other words, without the predisposition to autism which arises from genetic anomalies, the disorder could not present itself, but even with this genetic predisposition, a child may not become autistic unless environmental influences act upon these altered genes to cause further harm. While no single gene or environmental agent has been pinpointed as the cause of autism, research has identified a number of genetic anomalies that appear to play a role. A Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (called a SNP or “snip”) is a small genetic variation that can occur within a human being’s DNA sequence. Since children inherit a set of genes from each parent, a child may inherit a SNP from one or both parents. Although more than 99% of human DNA sequences are the same, these SNPs can have a major impact on how humans respond to diseases, environmental factors such as bacteria, viruses, toxins, and chemicals, as well as drugs and other therapies. Inheriting one normal gene and one SNP makes the gene less efficient, and inheriting a SNP from both parents has an even greater impact. The SNPs that have been identified in autistic children play important roles in managing natural detoxification and energy production in the cells. When these genes are inefficient, or overwhelmed, neurological effects ensue.

Glutathione Since the factors contributing to autism are multifactorial and affect a variety of metabolic processes in the body, certain researchers have devoted their studies not to a single gene or toxin, but to particular pathways which can be affected by the combination of genetics and environment. In 2004, researchers at Arkansas Children’s Hospital found that autistic children have lower levels of a critical detoxifying compound called glutathione than their typical peers. Glutathione is not only essential for trapping toxins and readying them for excretion, but is also a very powerful antioxidant. Reduced levels of this compound have far reaching effects on overall health. While the children studied had lowered levels of the active form of glutathione (called reduced glutathione), they also had increased quantities of oxidized glutathione, an inactive form that is less desirable. While there is as of yet no definitive answer as to why children with autism have less reduced glutathione, the evidence points to a combination of genetics, nutrition, and toxic exposure. The ability to express the gene for glutathione production can vary from one person to the next. For those with a less efficient form of the gene, glutathione reserves can be exhausted by increased exposure to chemicals, pesticides and other environmental insults. We take in these toxins on a daily basis through air, water and food, and they 26

Natural Nutmeg April 2012

are ingested, inhaled and even absorbed through the skin. In an increasingly toxic world, small children with inefficient glutathione expression can be overwhelmed by the body burden. An enzyme called MTHFR, which is necessary for processing folic acid, is a key factor in producing glutathione, and the gene that governs it is another piece of the glutathione/detoxification puzzle. Many children with autism have a less efficient form of the gene that codes for MTHFR, making it harder to produce glutathione. One way to get around this deficit is by increasing a more broken down form of folic acid called folinic acid. Since folinic acid is produced after the MTHFR enzyme has done its work, adding it directly bypasses the logjam that can occur when MTHFR cannot keep up with the demand. Mothers with the variant for MTHFR are more likely to have a child with autism than women who have two normal genes. In a recent study of families in Northern California, three genes were identified as risk factors for autism in children. When moms had a variant of MTHFR, as well as another gene called CBS, and when children have a SNP for a gene called COMT, risk of autism was increased. Greater risk also was identified in moms with gene variants who did not take prenatal vitamins. The CBS gene manages the production of the CBS compound, which is required for producing glutathione at a different but equally important step in the process than MTHFR. It requires vitamin B6 to function, and increasing B6 can help this process along. The third gene, called COMT, does not affect glutathione, but is necessary for the production of dopamine and other neurotransmitters in the brain. Children with COMT variants were more likely to have autism whether or not their moms took a prenatal vitamin, but the risk was even higher when there was no vitamin support. The relationship between nutrition and detoxification cannot be overemphasized. It is important that children on the autism spectrum consume foods free of chemicals and pesticides, hormones and antibiotics, in order to limit their exposure to toxins. However, this is not the only way nutrition plays a role in detoxification. Another factor that affects glutathione production is protein intake. Glutathione is made up of three different protein fragments called amino acids, so when there is limited protein in the diet, less glutathione can be produced. In the Arkansas study, children with autism had less cysteine, which is one of the required amino acids. As we have already seen, B vitamins play a critical role in detoxification processes and glutathione production. Vitamin B12, folic acid and Vitamin B6 are major players in an elegant yet complex biochemical dance that changes food proteins into glutathione, so highly processed diets that are lacking in B vitamins put up yet another roadblock to normal elimination of toxins.

Mitochondria Another important area of exploration into the development and treatment of autism is the mitochondria – tiny energy producing engines at the core of our cells. Recent studies have identified a subset of children with autism who have what is called a mitochondrial

disorder. While true mitochondrial disease is more severe and potentially life threatening, inefficiencies in the genes that modulate mitochondrial function can result in a more subtle impairment in the processing of fat and carbohydrates for energy. These microscopic powerhouses provide the energy that fuels all our organ systems including brain, heart, muscle, and GI tract, among others. When energy is lacking, symptoms as varied as fatigue, low muscle tone, reflux, vomiting, constipation, swallowing difficulties, temperature intolerance, and heart problems can arise. The mitochondria also impact our immune function and detoxification pathways. Since the brain requires extensive amounts of energy, deficits in mitochondrial function reduce brain function. Emerging research is identifying more and more autistic children with mitochondrial deficits, and in many cases, the descent into autism follows a virus or fever, which makes sense since mitochondria are exquisitely sensitive to the environment, temperature and germs. Nutrients such as carnitine and CoQ10 can increase mitochondrial efficiency, as can certain B vitamins. These compounds are necessary for bringing energy substrates into the mitochondria and then processing them into energy. Epigenetics is an area of research that explores the relationship between environment and external factors and gene expression. While we cannot alter our specific genes, nutrition, toxins, viruses, bacteria, chemicals and pesticides all modulate how and when genes express themselves. These factors can have a profound effect on the development and treatment of autism. By reducing the toxin burden on their bodies, and providing the nutritional cofactors to overcome inefficient gene variants, we can help children on the spectrum to reach their fullest potential. Vaccinations and Autism?

A

utism is on the rise. Last year alone 24,000 children were diagnosed with some form of autism spectrum disorder. Types of Autism include Asperger syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, Rett syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder, and classical Autism. Characteristics of these types of Autism include impaired social interaction and communication skills, and a limited range of activities and interests. The latest research supports that there are approximately thirteen various conditions which may lead to the development of Autism. To say that the precursors of Autism are either environmental or genetic would be short sighted. This article will explore the two most important probable causes of Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder. The first cause of Autism we will look at is Candida overgrowth. Most of the children diagnosed with Autism have a severe Candida overgrowth. This is primarily due to pregnant women eating diets loaded with sugars and refined carbohydrates, thus leading to Candida overgrowth in the mother. When a mother has Candida over-

28

Natural Nutmeg April 2012

growth, her baby is infected during birth. The baby’s undeveloped immune system cannot kill the Candida, and the friendly bacteria the baby should have picked up from the mother are missing, so Candida overgrows in the baby. Once Candida overgrows in the intestinal tract it changes into the fungal form with legs that actually drill tiny holes in the intestinal tract. These holes allow proteins that are partially digested to slip through into the blood stream. This condition is called leaky gut syndrome because the intestines are actually leaking partially digested foods. When this occurs, the body’s immune system responds to these foods like any other toxin. The immune system treats the foods as harmful, and allergies develop. Because the Candida sets up the body in an almost auto immune situation, these allergies and improper digestion prevent the child from digesting proteins properly. This inability to properly digest the proteins in foods to amino acids means infants’ bodies do not have enough amino acids to make glutathione, which is the main detoxifier in the body. To compound this problem further, babies are given vaccines at birth which contain toxins, such as mercury and aluminum. In turn, if the child does indeed have Candida overgrowth from birth, which then leads to a leaky gut that cannot digest foods completely, causing protein shortage and less glutathione, then these toxins can stay in the brain and become the primary cause of Autism. Research shows that glutathione is deficient in virtually all children with Autism. Today there is much controversy about the connection between vaccinations and Autism. Dr. Andrew Wakefield is one of the world’s most respected and well-published gastroenterologists and has investigated this topic immensely. He states, “Where is the crime in listening to over 4000 parents about their children’s disease, clinically investigating the autistic children and reporting the connection with the vaccines these children received?” In 2007, Dr. Wakefield was persecuted for his courageous actions. He should be praised, not condemned, for listening to these parents of autistic children when no one else would. The U.S. vaccine schedule has grown from 10 vaccines given to our children in the 1980s to 36 today, perfectly matching the dramatic rise in Autism. Children are administered these toxic compounds from day one. We must challenge the state and federal systems to look into the harmful effects these shots may be having on our children. The medical community needs to study the data; ignoring the research to protect profits ultimately jeopardizes community health. They should look at the study that was done with Amish children, who are not vaccinated, and have virtually no cases of Autism. In fact, in the research study reporting this, the only child who did develop Autism had been vaccinated as a baby. The premise of vaccines is to create an immune response in the child. Why then vaccinate newborns on day one, when the medical community knows that the infant’s immune system isn’t developed until 6-12 months from gestation? The first six months of life is a time of vital neurological growth and maturation. When vaccines’

toxic ingredients are injected into the newborn they flood the child’s system and completely overwhelm the child’s ability to deal with those toxins. The babies and young children simply cannot handle the toxins and pathogens in the vaccines. As a consequence, the immune system becomes seriously compromised, and cannot work like it should. Autoimmune conditions develop; the overactive inflammatory side of the immune system starts attacking cells where pathogens and toxins from the vaccines are hiding. Recent research shows that Autism is an autoimmune condition. Rebecca Carley, MD reports that this autoimmune reaction is crucial in the development of Autism. “The destruction of the myelin sheath protecting the nerves is one of the primary causative factors for Autism.” So not only do vaccines overload the child with toxins, they may start autoimmune responses against the nerve fibers in the brain, exposing and damaging them. This reaction can cause Autism. The toxins from vaccines may affect one side of the brain and not the other, causing a neurological disconnect often found in Autism. As mentioned in the beginning of this article glutathione is a vital antioxidant and the majority of autistic children lack this due to the inability to completely digest proteins. Without this important antioxidant the heavy metals from vaccines may never be removed from the child’s brain/nerves. To reduce Autism in our children we must rethink our beliefs on vaccinations and look at the facts. Submitted by Dr. Patrick DeFrancesco of Chiropractic Health Center of Glastonbury. Arsenic

As

and

Arsenic 74.92

By Jared M. Skowron, ND & Michelle Hessberger, ND, LAc

I

n 1944, Cary Grant starred in the movie Arsenic and Old Lace, which was based on a play centering around arsenic poisonings in Windsor, Connecticut. The play was written as a comedy, and at the time, no one would have expected the outbursts of consistent arsenic toxicities we’re seeing today. First, Dr. Oz found arsenic in apple juice, and the medical community condemned him for scaring the country and caring parents with such lies and travesties. Consumer Reports magazine silenced his critics when they published a report confirming high arsenic levels in apple juice and grape juice. Then, in the middle of February 2012, another report came from Dartmouth stating that high levels of arsenic were found in brown rice syrup, which is an ingredient in some infant formulas. It seems like no matter where we turn we are finding poison in our foods.

The Two Forms of Arsenic There are two types of arsenic, organic and inorganic. Arsenic is a natural element in the earth, just as there is calcium or sulphur. It can be converted into organic arsenic, which is not harmful, or it can be

Autism

converted into inorganic arsenic that is toxic. Arsenic is naturally found in plants, including fruits and vegetables, that are grown in ground that naturally contains arsenic. Pesticides sprayed on fruit orchards and other foods contain arsenic. Lumber was previously treated with arsenic, and the arsenic will release into the air if that lumber is burned. (Lumber created recently does not contain arsenic). Arsenic is also used in certain electronics and smelting, and is an exposure risk in those production areas. Arsenic levels are usually tested by town water departments. The EPA has set a limit of 0.01 parts per million of arsenic that can be in your town water. Well water should be tested. In other words, you and your children can unknowingly eat, drink, or inhale arsenic.

Toxic Effects Ingesting high levels of arsenic at one time, while rare, can cause anemia, abnormal heart rhythms, tingling in the hands and feet, or even death. Most of us are not exposed to acute high levels, but rather consistent small levels. This type of exposure can cause diarrhea, kidney damage, an increased risk of skin cancer, liver cancer, bladder cancer, and lung cancer. More of a concern for our children, arsenic causes a decrease in IQ scores and can cross the placenta while the child is in the womb.

Arsenic and Autism Cleveland State University published a recent study in December 2011 showing elevated levels of arsenic in hair samples of children on the autism spectrum. This may add to the amount of oxidative stress in the brains of these children. Hair analysis will confirm toxicity within the past 6 or 12 30

Natural Nutmeg April 2012

months (depending on the amount of hair analyzed). The Project FRONTIER study, performed in Texas and published in March 2011, showed elevated arsenic levels are associated with poorer scores in language, visual-spatial skills, executive functioning, poorer scores in global cognition, processing speed and immediate memory. Penn State analyzed a group of 526 first-grade students showing arsenic levels are not associated with parent ratings of behavior, however are modestly associated with higher scores on the Oppositional, Cognitive Problems and ADHD sub-scales of the teacher ratings. Homeopathic provings of arsenic consistently show symptoms of anxiety, restlessness, and diarrhea.

Action Steps Don’t be daunted by the media! Take action right now. Get your arsenic levels tested immediately. A quick urine test is all that is needed to analyze acute arsenic exposure. Test your organic (good) and inorganic (bad) arsenic levels. Conventional labs run these tests and they are covered by insurance plans. Hair testing can also be performed to show longer arsenic exposure. If arsenic is found, take action with food and water analysis, along with a complete detoxification program.

Clinical Stories In my office, I test arsenic levels on almost every child that I see. While toxic levels in adults is more than 50ug/d, I commonly see levels double or triple that in children with autism. One child even had twenty times the toxic adult level! Natural detoxification (not chelation) is safe and effective in removing arsenic. Everyday I see children who are speaking more, have decreased

sensory issues, sleep through the night, and mainstream into school because of the detoxification of arsenic and other poisons. Many parents ask me why their pediatrician doesn’t test for arsenic, and I wish those doctors did the testing. I wish more people knew about the damage of these poisons for a growing epidemic of autism and ADHD. We can’t ignore the obvious toxicity, the scientific research, and the clinical improvements we see. I encourage you to get yourself and your children tested today. Spring Cleaning: Is a 10-day Juice Fast for You?

By Maribeth Abrams, MS, CNC

Y

ou know that nice, clean feeling that comes from cleaning out the cobwebs and opening the windows to allow fresh, spring air to fill your home? Well, a 10-Day Juice Fast is kind of like that for your body. It’s a powerful way to feel light, clean, pure and refreshed, while removing toxins from your body and serving as inspiration to adopt a healthier lifestyle. A 10-day juice fast is exactly as its name implies, which means that for ten days, the only “food” you consume is fresh fruit and vegetable juice made in your home. Adjusting to the fast usually takes a few days. But once this adjustment period ends, you will likely have adequate energy needs to accomplish all of your usual activities such as working, caring for kids and even exercise. Like vacuuming, dusting and clearing out clutter, a 10-day juice fast can bring challenges. The trick is to know what to expect and to be guided by a practitioner with juice fast experience. Results can be highly rewarding and frequently include clear mental acuity and a decrease or disappearance in bloating, feelings of heaviness, and digestive problems, plus a few pounds lost, to boot. Simply stated, it can feel really good. If you feel lethargic and heavy or are ready for an overall clean-up, you may benefit from a 10-Day Juice Fast. It that sounds like you, then here are a few things to consider: • During the first few days of the fast, your body is adjusting to the liquid diet and you may feel hungry or particularly challenged by the sights and smells of food. Most people feel significantly better by the third or fourth day. If you fast for only a day or two, then you will probably miss out on the positive feelings that usually occur after the first few days of adjustment. • The three days leading up to the 10-Day Fast and the three days immediately following the 10-Day Fast are just as important as the fasting days themselves. Following your practitioner’s guidelines regarding these time frames is important to minimize potential detoxification symptoms and to better ensure a healthy diet following the fast. • Some people notice that during the fast, they experience a natural desire to let go of unhealthy or unproductive situations in their lives, and this can ultimately result in a cleanse of more than just the physical nature. Completing a 10-day juice fast is an amazing accomplishment, and many people say afterwards that they look forward to doing it again in the future. While I don’t recommend the fast as an alternative to establishing long-term healthy habits, I do suggest that it can be a beneficial component of healthy living for many people. Some juices are made with mostly vegetables, and others contain mostly fruit. It’s fun to be creative and discover combinations that you like, but sometimes following a recipe is a good way to get started. One of the important points when juicing is to incorporate as many greens into the juices as possible, and another is to not overdo the fruit. The trick is to add just enough sweetness to make greens palatable. Note: These recipes are to be made in a juicer rather than blender. 32

ADHD Without Drugs

A

ttention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is an increasingly common behavioral disorder characterized by impulsivity, inattentiveness, and hyperactivity. According to Swanson et al. in Neuropsych Review in 2007, there has been a 400% increase in ADHD over the past 20 years and a 7-fold increase in prescription medications for ADHD. Although it is largely diagnosed in children or adolescents, ADHD also affects adults, and the negative impact it can have on learning, school or work performance, and personal relationships, is universal. Pharmaceuticals often mask signs and symptoms of underlying medical problems and thus may be ineffective. In people who have comorbid psychiatric illnesses, medications used for ADHD (usually stimulants) can even be dangerous. Studies by DuPaul et al., and Piska, also show that stimulants are ineffective in 70% of ADHD children with comorbid anxiety. Furthermore, accumulating evidence suggests the etiology of ADHD is multifactorial and may not always respond to stimulant medication. Potential etiologic factors include, but are not limited to, nutritional deficiencies and imbalances, impaired detoxification, allergies and immune dysfunction, gastrointestinal disorders, and mitochondrial dysfunction. The expanding ADHD population, scope of potential contributing factors, and increasing reliance on often ineffective medication, signals the demand for a more individualized and comprehensive approach. Underlying medical issues often trigger internal dysregulation in one or more organ systems that manifests as changes in behavior and cognition. Finding and treating 34

these problems often improves behavior and cognition, which promotes more effective learning and greater success in many areas of life. This article highlights aspects of the integrative approach to ADHD, concentrating on diet/nutrition and toxins as potential underlying contributing factors. Everything presented here is only meant for information and education, not direct diagnostic or treatment recommendations.

(lifelong gluten intolerance) patients and a gluten-free diet improves those symptoms. In terms of general nutrition, vitamins and minerals are essential to cognitive function. Various researchers have found low levels of vitamins and minerals in children with a range of neurodevelopmental disorders, as well as cognitive, behavioral, and academic improvement in those receiving specific supplementation. Some of that research is introduced below.

Diet And Nutrition:

Iron:

Subtle dietary changes can promote significant behavioral and cognitive changes. The impact of early poor nutrition depends on timing in relation to critical brain development, but if poor nutrition continues or develops later, it can have profound negative effects. As far back as 1922, there were published reports of improvement in hyperactivity and learning issues with an elimination diet (Shannon WR). Feingold’s work in the 70s also highlighted the relationship between hyperactivity and artificial food colorings, flavorings, preservatives, and salicylates. The relationship between dietary peptides (like gluten and casein) and neurologic function and behavior is well documented as well. Horvath, et al., and others, have shown that increased intestinal permeability can allow poorly digested peptides (as well as toxins and allergens) into the bloodstream where they trigger inflammation, immune dysregulation, and affect neurologic and psychologic function. In 2006, Niederhofer showed that ADHD-like symptomatology is often present among untreated celiac disease

• Children with moderately severe irondeficiency anemia as infants had lower test scores for mental and motor functioning at school entry (Lozoff, et al. 1991 NEJM;325(10):687-694). • 23 children with ADHD, ages 5 to 8, with serum ferritin (iron stores) < 30; for 12 weeks, 18 given iron-sulfate and 5 given placebo; decreased ADHD rating scales (Konofal E, et al. Jan 2008 Pediatr Neurol;38(1):20-6). • 73 girls with low serum ferritin; 8-week study; assigned ferrous sulfate or placebo; iron group performed better on verbal learning and memory tests (Bruner AB, et al. Oct 1996 Lancet;348(9033):992-6).

Essential Fatty Acids: • Study with 44 hyperactive children and 45 matched controls; various essential fatty acid levels were significantly lower in hyperactive group (Mitchell EA, et al. 1987;26:406-411). • Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 6-week pilot trial; effects of omega-

3-fatty acids in 13 autistic children with severe tantrums, aggression or self-injurious behavior; advantage of omega-3 fatty acids compared with placebo for hyperactivity and stereotypy (Amminger GP. Feb 2007 Biol Psychiatry;61(4):551-3). • Pure EPA effective for depression and schizophrenia; Combination of EPA and DHA better for ADHD (Richardson AJ. 2006 Int Rev Psychiatry;18(2):155-172).

Pycnogenol: • Improvement in attention, EEG studies, handwriting, and academic success; it is also an antioxidant and can help with inflammation, immune support, and allergies. • (Greenblatt, et al. Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry;38(10):1209-1210). • (Liu, et al. 1998 Cell Mol Life Sci;54(10):1168-1172). • (Liu, et al. 2000 Biol Pharm Bull;23(6):735-737). • (Rohdewald P. Int J Clin Pharmacol Ther;40(4):158-168).

B6: • Improved behaviors of some children with ADHD, compared to methylphenidate (Coleman, et al. 1979 Biol Psychiatry;14:741-751).

Zinc: • Often low in ADHD (Bekaroglu, et al. 1996 J Child Psychol Psychiatry;37:225-227). • Low zinc may predict poor response to amphetamine treatment in ADHD (Arnold, et al. 1990 Int J Neurosci;50:103-107).

Other: • AD-FX (combination of American Ginseng and Ginko Bilboa) – study with 36 ADHD patients, ages 3 to 17; 4-week study; 44% social improvements and 74% improvements in Conners’ ADHD index and hyperactive/impulsive behaviors (Lyon, et al. 2001 J Psychiatry Neurosci;26(3):221-228).

Environment And Toxins: Toxic load due to chemicals, toxic metals, and allergens can cause oxidative stress, increased burden on the immune system, and behavioral and cognitive changes. Infections, trauma/injury, stress, and poor diet can all further increase oxidative stress. Many chemicals and metals are recognized causes of neurodevelopmental disorders and subclinical brain dysfunction. Exposure during early fetal development can trigger brain injury at doses much lower than those affecting adult brain function. The information below highlights the importance of exploring causes of oxidative stress as contributing factors in ADHD. • Children exposed to higher chlorpyrifos levels were more likely to experience Psychomotor Development Index and Mental Development Index Delays, attention problems, ADHD, and pervasive developmental disorder problems at 3 years of age (Rauh, et al. 2006 Pediatrics’118;e1845-1859). • Prenatal environmental tobacco smoke

is a risk factor for ADHD (Braun JM, et al. Dec 2006 Environ Health Project;114(12):1904-1909). • Dose-response relationship between childhood lead exposure and ADHD (Braun JM, et al. Dec 2006 Environ Health Project;114(12):1904-1909). • In Texas report – on average, for each 1000 lbs of environmentally released mercury, there was a 43% increase in the rate of special education services and a 61% increase in the rate of Autsim (Palmer, et al. Helath & Place 12; 2006:203-209). • Case report – 4 ½ year-old boy with ADHD and Autism; increased blood lead level; treated with succimer and repetitive behavior and hyperactivity stopped; regression when succimer stopped (Eppright, et al. 1996 Mo Med;93(3):136-8). • Environmental lead exposure in children who have maximal blood lead < 7.5 μg/ dl is associated with intellectual deficits (Lanphear BP, et al. 2005 Environ Health Perspect;113(7). • Pollen exposure is a cause of regression in neurobehavioral function in children with Autism and ADHD (Boris MJ, et al. 2004 J of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine;14(1):47-54). • Three German studies suggest a strong association between atopic dermatitis and ADHD – one (by Schmitt, et al) reported a 2.67-fold increased likelihood of ADHD in those with atopic dermatitis and parentreported sleep problems (article by Bruce Jancin in Internal Medicine News; studies from JAMA and Pediatric Allergy Immunology journals cited in this article).

In looking at possible underlying medical problems as contributing factors in ADHD, the integrative approach to those with ADHD offers an individualized and comprehensive alternative approach that can either make medication unnecessary or reduce it to a temporary and adjunctive intervention. As the medical community continues to learn about the etiologies of ADHD, the information presented here provides more pathways for a patient to explore with his or her physician and may ultimately lead to more natural treatment options for those with ADHD. Dr. Nancy O’Hara and Dr. Gail Szakacs dedicate their practice to the integrative care of children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder, other Neurodevelopmental disorders, various chronic medical illnesses, and acute problems such as post-concussive injury. Their comprehensive center offers a variety of functional medicine interventions, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy for use in a primary or adjunctive role in the treatment of many acute and chronic medical problems. Dr. O’Hara is board certified in Pediatrics and Dr. Szakacs is board certified in Internal Medicine. Their practice in Wilton, CT has been serving the local and global communities since 1999. Emergence of Nutrition as Core Medicine: Cutting-Edge Science from the American College of Nutrition 52nd Annual Conference State-of-the-art preventive and therapeutic medicine has nutrition science at its core, a fact that is not adequately addressed by medical training. This groundbreaking conference will provide . . . deep insights into clinical nutrition and the science underlying it. ~ American College of Nutrition & The Integrative Medicine Program, Morristown Memorial Hospital

W

e are passionate about staying abreast of cutting-edge, science-based nutrition research that can directly and positively impact people’s health. In pursuit of greater knowledge, we recently attended the four-day 52nd Annual Conference of the American College of Nutrition. We are pleased to have the privilege to share with you below a few pearls of wisdom that we gathered from some key holistic practitioners and researchers who presented during the conference.

Dean Ornish, MD (Founder of the Preventive Medicine Research

Institute in California; Clinical Prof. of Medicine at the Univ. of California; author of four New York Times bestsellers) Dean Ornish, MD, emphasized that lifestyle changes can treat disease, not merely prevent it. In fact, 35 years of research enabled him to be the first to scientifically prove that integrative lifestyle changes can reverse heart disease, lengthen telomeres (the ends of chromosomes that control aging), and slow, stop, or reverse the progression of early-stage prostate cancer. Dr. Ornish spoke of his Medicare-covered program outlined in The Spectrum: A Scientifically Proven Program to Feel Better, Live

Longer, Lose Weight, and Gain Health, which includes: (1) eating mindfully to reduce calories and increase pleasure; (2) meditating to heal from psoriasis; and (3) using lifestyle changes to increase brain neurons and size, and to slow the aging process through increased blood flow. He also touched on the importance of human connection: “Love and intimacy — our ability to connect with ourselves and others, is at the root of what makes us sick and what makes us well, what causes sadness and what brings happiness, what makes us suffer and what leads to healing.” Leo Galland, MD, FACN (Internationally recognized leader in Nutritional Medicine for 20 years; Dir., Foundation for Integrated Medicine; author of more than 30 scientific articles and textbook chapters) At the conference, Dr. Galland distributed a guide entitled The Anti-Inflammatory Dietary Principles, which instructs: “A diet made up of anti-inflammatory foods can be a powerful healing and health promoting tool. Inflammation is associated with chronic conditions such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, IBD, and asthma.” “functional foods”, alone and in combinations, can decrease inflammation and otherwise promote healing. The research-based “12 Simple Principles” in Dr. Galland’s guide include: (1) avoid processed foods; choose foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids; (2) eat fish at least 3 times/week (especially to decrease the risk of Alzheimer’s and sudden cardiac death); (3) eat 9 servings/day of fruits and vegetables;

(4) eat at least 25 grams/day of fiber; (5) eat an average of 4 servings/ week of alliums (e.g., onions, garlic) and crucifers (e.g., broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts); and (6) avoid saturated fat. Mary T. Newport, MD, FAAP (Neonatologist; author of What If There Was a Cure for Alzheimer’s Disease and No One Knew?) Mary Newport, M.D., addressed the use of medium chain fatty acids (MCTs) (especially found in supplement form as MCT Oil, and which comprise 60% of coconut oil) to treat and reverse Alzheimer’s disease. Especially in connection with the ongoing reversal of her husband’s early onset Alzheimer’s, Dr. Newport cited ketones (vs. glucose, the body’s customary fuel) as an “alternative fuel for the brain.” Ketones are produced when the liver and kidney break down fatty acids for energy. Dr. Newport cited these interesting facts in connection with her theory: (1) by 2050, 15 million people in the United States will have

Alzheimer’s; (2) breast milk contains 10% MCTs; (3) ketones provide 2/3 of the body’s fuel during starvation; (4) ketones protect cellular energy; (5) therapeutic coconut oil ideally should be virgin, organic, and raw/unrefined; and (6) to prevent indigestion, cramping, or diarrhea, treatment can begin with 1 teaspoon of MCT or coconut oil per meal and can increase gradually until the goal of 4-9 tablespoons/ day is reached. for more information, see www.coconutketones. com and www.coconutketones.com/whatifcure.pdf. Stephen Sinatra, MD, CNS, FACN (Internationally board-certified cardiologist; certified nutrition specialist; certified bioenergetic psycho-therapist; certified anti-aging specialist; author of The Sinatra Solution: Metabolic Cardiology) Stephen Sinatra, M.D., emphasized the importance of treating cardiovascular disease (abnormal function of the heart or blood vessels) at the cellular level. (See also www.heartmdinstitute.com ). Since diseased hearts lack enough adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the source of cellular energy, they require restoration of their energy through various nutritional supplements: ubiquinol (the best-absorbed CoQ10); acetyl L-carnitine (ACL) [an amino acid that rapidly protects the powerhouse (mitochondria) of all cells]; D-ribose (a simple sugar that can protect heart attack-induced cell damage and help rejuvenate blood-deprived heart muscles); and magnesium (critical to proper heart function). While the body requires D-ribose to create ATP, it uses ACL and CoQ10 to recycle ATP efficiently. Magnesium, which participates in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, helps boost ATP production to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease. Michael Holick, MD, PhD, FACN (Boston Univ. Medical Center: Prof. of Medicine; Director, Bone Health Care Clinic and Heliotherapy, Light, and Skin Research Center; determined how vitamin D is synthesized in the skin; established global recommendations advising sunlight exposure as an integral source of vitamin D; helped increase vitamin D deficiency awareness in the US and vitamin D’s role in causing osteoporosis ) In stressing the ongoing vitamin D deficiency epidemic in the United States, Michael Holick, MD, faulted the Institute of

Medicine’s vitamin D guidelines (both the RDA/600 iu and Upper Limit (UL)/4,000iu) for not being based on a medical model. Dr. Holick also highlighted these vitamin D intake considerations: (1) diet alone is inadequate to supply appropriate levels; (2) all pregnant women should take 2,000iu in addition to a prenatal vitamin; (3) lactating women should take 4,000iu/ day; (4) infants should be given 400-800iu/ day; (5) other children should take 6001,000iu/day; and (6) adults can safely take as much as 10,000iu/day or 50,000iu/week for 6-8 weeks. The ideal blood level for all individuals is >30ng/ml. Note that calcium/ magnesium supplementation should always accompany vitamin D supplementation to prevent vitamin D from pulling calcium from the bones. With respect to vitamin D’s benefits, Dr. Holick stressed that it can resolve bone pain, increase bone density, and reduce the risk of all cancers by 60% (citing Robert P. Heaney, MD, Creighton Univ. Osteoporosis Research Center, NIH). He cited one study showing that 1,200iu of vitamin D decreased children’s colds by 42%. Vitamin D also has been shown to have a critical role in diabetes, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, metabolic syndrome (anyone with a BMI>30 should be screened for deficiency due to malabsorption), dementia, and cardiovascular health (deficiency increases heart attack risk by 50%!). Vitamin D deficiency also can cause severe muscle weakness.

Natural Means of Managing the Immune System

T

he immune system is one of the best barometers of health in the body, and probably one of the most sensitive systems. Factors from our environment, lifestyle, improper nutrition, and genetic predisposition can lead to several different manifestations of imbalance. Restoring balance to the system can help reduce the symptoms. Managing immune function is one of the areas where natural medicine really shines. Unlike many conventional approaches, one of the main objectives of natural medicine is to help the body help itself. Natural medicine works by not fighting infections for the body, but by boosting immunity, and not by suppressing inflammation, but helping to clear it. Symptoms are not only resolved, but are also prevented in the future. Immune function can become imbalanced in two different ways on two different axes. It can become heightened; attacking things it shouldn’t or seeing something as a threat to the body that isn’t. In this mode it might attack things in the environment, or the body might attack itself in an autoimmune reaction. On the other end of the spectrum, the immune system can become burdened and weakened, causing it to no longer work effectively to protect the body. External viruses, bacteria and fungal infections can become opportunistic with a weakened immune system and cause chronic conditions. Internal low immunity allows cells to grow out of control and the checks and balances to prevent cancer are no lon-

ger in place. With all immune dysfunction, the different manifestations are not mutually exclusive; on the contrary, oftentimes inflammation may be related to low immunity, as the imbalance progresses, or vice versa. For example certain chronic infections can lead to autoimmune conditions, but also some autoimmune diseases have a greater risk of cancer associated with them.

Inflammation When the immune system becomes irritated, it attacks. Production of antibodies and white blood cells, essentially soldiers in the immune system’s army, are enlisted to fight many perceived threats.

Allergies External threats, including foods, pollen, dust, mold, insect bites, wool, grass, trees and even extreme changes in temperature, can evoke an immune response. The reaction to the environmental stressor can range from a rash, itchy eyes, asthma, eczema or stuffy nose to a seriously life threatening anaphylactic shock.

Autoimmunity The irritated immune system also can set its sights inward. Autoimmune conditions can rise in almost every part of the body, as there are more than eighty types of autoimmune diseases. It’s estimated that one in thirty one people will develop an autoimmune condition. From the thyroid to muscles, a stressed immune system can become inflamed and attack if not calmed down and balanced.

Low Immunity The immune system also can become weakened with stress, lack of nutrients and other factors. This can lead to fewer and less effective immune cells, as well as a poor balance of the different types.

40

Natural Nutmeg April 2012

Chronic Infection Some people get a cold and it is gone in a few days, in others it lingers for months. Poor immunity to external factors leaves a person susceptible to infection, whether it be to yeast, fungi, tick borne bacteria or viruses.

Cancer Cells that start to mutate and grow out of control are either self-signaled to die off or are addressed by the immune system. This is a normal process everyone has where the immune system monitors and maintains balance so that cells do not grow out of control and become cancerous. Specific cells are responsible for these actions, and low amounts of them or an imbalance with other parts of the immune system have been correlated with cancer. Blood tests can help determine the status of the immune system, from specific cancer fighting cells such as Natural Killer cells to food allergies and autoimmune markers. Many natural substances, including foods and herbs, can then improve the immune system and help restore balance. Inflammation and compromised immunity have many sources, which is why these conditions are so prevalent. Highly processed foods, heavy metal exposure, imbalance of good bacteria, excessive saturated fats and sugar, stress, lack of exercise, and nutrient deficiencies have all been associated with cancer, chronic infection, allergies and autoimmunity. Looking at these conditions in relation to each other illustrates how antibiotics, allergy medications and immune suppressing drugs can be excellent short term treatments, but they do not help the overall imbalance. Only lifestyle medicine and changes to the whole person can truly balance the immune system, stop inflammation and start protecting the body properly. After dinner, you’ll want to visit the Tiki bar to savor a glass of wine or specialty cocktail under the stars by the light and warmth of the outdoor fire pit while enjoying the ocean breeze. Tell Bobby we said hi and be sure to order a skinny margarita as he makes about the best one I’ve ever had! For a little later night entertainment, check out the new lobby sushi and cocktail bar, Korals. The $2.5-million redesign expanded the lobby to include nearly 1,000 square feet of additional space, floor-toceiling windows overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, and a sushi bar with a Bisazza tile mural backdrop. As you enter the lobby, you won’t believe your eyes as you gaze upon a custom-designed, 11-foot tall, three-foot wide, 3,600-pound aquarium column, which showcases live tropical fish. With all this luxury, how can they possibly be eco-friendly you ask? We learned that Marriott International aspires to be the global leader in demonstrating how responsible hospitality management can be a positive force for the environment and create economic opportunities around the world.

As part of this initiative, they’ve implemented the following green efforts: • Replaced light bulbs with energy-efficient bulbs • Installed low-flow showerheads and toilets • Introduced water/energy saving linen programs • Operates the most ENERGY STAR® certified properties in the industry • Involves its global workforce in ecovolunteerism • Installed new laundry facilities which are 60% more efficient • Developed a green committee and wellness committee where associates get a health coach, rewards for health assessments, education on green practices, and tips for the day on how to be healthier • Automatic dimmers on lighting

by 9pm. (bright lights from the resort send the turtles the wrong way after hatching and make them vulnerable to predators) • Site lighting adjusted to shine away from the beach. • Nightly messages left for guests to remind them to close their blackout drapes every night by 9pm. • Loss prevention will monitor guest rooms and will close drapes as necessary. • Increase nightly sweeps on the beach to pick up all trash (sea turtles need a beach free of barriers and litter) • Literature placed in every guest room to educate guests to take action to preserve our common habitat • All events will need to be off the beach by 9pm and completed no later than 10pm.

• Loss prevention will patrol beach east of the Tiki Huts to prevent disturbance of any nests. We couldn’t help but love this place just for that alone! One other thing not to miss if you’re really in the mood to pamper yourself – rent one of their pool cabanas, which includes a flat screen television, fan and refrigerator! Or if you can’t resist the pull of being on the beach and watching the pelicans and gulls fishing all around you, the resort has plush loungers and umbrellas to rent as well. The Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort is truly the place to do everything or...nothing at all. Submitted by Dr. Diane Hindman. For more information, visit www.marcoislandmarriott. com.

But what really makes the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort unique is their commitment to the environment regarding sea turtle season. They shared with me the following facts about sea turtles and what the resort does to protect them: From May 1 – Oct 31: • Loggerhead sea turtles are endangered species. • It takes a female turtle 1 to 3 hours to lay an average of 100 eggs in the sand. • Sixty days after the nests are laid, the hatchlings will emerge and begin the trek to the Gulf of Mexico. • It is estimated that only 1 in 1000 sea turtle hatchlings will survive to reproduce. • A female turtle can nest up to 7 times per season, but only nest every 2-3 years. • The temperature of the sand determines the sex of the hatchlings. • Sea turtles cannot retract their heads into their shells. • Baby turtles are instinctually compelled back to the naturally bright horizon over the Gulf of Mexico (artificial lights on shorelines deter them from nesting and returning to the Gulf) • Key lighting turned off around the resort NaturalNutmeg.com
