PUBLISHER'SLETTER

S

pring is finally here and I’ve been loving this warm weather. In fact, as I write this publisher letter today, our predicted high is 75 degrees! One thing I love to do in April is give my home and office a spring detox. I do this to get reorganized, get rid of clutter that is bogging down my life and recommit to keeping things simple. I also invite you to join Regina Sanchez, professional organizer, in her 41-day organizational challenge (see our Nuggets section) – you’ll be amazed at what you can simplify in your life! Here are three easy tips that I recommend and do every spring and fall. First, clear out the clutter. Pick one room in your house (or even one section of a room if the whole room is too overwhelming) and take a day or a weekend to organize, file or throw out what you no longer need that is taking up space in that area. Second, put your wardrobe on an elimination diet! Experts say that if you haven’t worn something in over a year then get rid of it. Donate it to Goodwill or a local consignment or thrift shop. Stop saving that one outfit that you might want to wear for Halloween some year. Chances are it’ll never happen. Plus, it’s amazing how few clothes you can get away with if you know how to mix and match and accessorize well. Third, trim down your to-do list. Take a good hard look at your list of projects, tasks, and errands to run on a weekly basis. If you have things on there that you know you won’t get to for months, cross them off and feel the weight lifted from your shoulders. Try to combine your errands in one day or a half day. There are many people making an effort to do this now to conserve gas and energy. I even read a story on Yahoo a few months ago about a family that refused to buy anything that wasn’t a necessity for a year (necessities included food and toiletries). If they wanted something that they didn’t technically need, they had to barter or trade for it with another item in their possession – so they had to get rid of something in the house in order to make room for the “new” thing. Talk about the ultimate in living a simple life. In Health and Happiness,

Nutmeg “Nuggets” Healing Ourselves Starts with our Digestive Tract

T

he cells of our digestive tract provide a first level of defense against disease causing organisms and toxins that we ingest when we are eating or drinking. You can think of how our skin provides protection from outside elements. When there is damage to the barrier function of our digestive tract, it allows undigested proteins, toxins, chemicals, and bacteria to pass into the blood stream. This may lead to food allergies, inflammation, and autoimmune disease. The cells of our digestive tract have a mutually beneficial relationship with numerous “friendly bacteria” that live within its walls. We (the host) provide a place to live and the friendly bacteria support our immune system and the healthy function of our cells. Damage to friendly bacteria can occur with an unhealthy diet or lifestyle, constipation, infection, and certain medications. When the good bacteria decrease, it allows for unfriendly bacteria to move in. These bacteria cause inflammation and inhibit the normal function of our cells, including maintaining a barrier to keep pathogens and chemicals out. There are steps that can be taken to improve the health of our digestive tract and the friendly bacteria that reside there. Elimination of processed food, refined sugar, and eating plenty of high fiber foods may help good bacteria to grow back. It is also important to increase the number of good bacteria with fermented foods or a probiotic supplement. Dr. Stacey Munro is a naturopathic physician based in Windsor, Connecticut. Take the April Organizational Challenge with Regina Sanchez, Professional Organizer!

C

urrently, I have the pleasure of working with a soon to be 89-year-old woman named Pearl. I am helping Pearl to downsize and make a move from her 7-room Colonial to a 4-room condo. Pearl has lived in her home for 61 years with her beloved husband Jack who passed away 5 years ago. Her biggest concern is that someday she will end up in Assisted Living. Her family knows of her concern and is setting her up in this new condo so there is no risk of falling due to the stairs and that if she needs assistance down the road, they can hire a live in to be with her. But when I talk with Pearl, I tell her that I cannot imagine that will be an issue for her. She is an amazing woman to me and encourages me every time I’m with her. Each evening before she goes to bed, she goes to her dresser, which has her wedding picture on it and thanks God for the many years of happiness she has shared with her beloved Jack and for what she was able to accomplish that day. She says it doesn’t matter how great or small that accomplishment was, she gives thanks for being able to do it. She could choose every night to stand at that picture with a “Woe is me attitude” asking God why he took her beloved from her now? Or she could go to bed feeling frustrated that she is moving from her loved home and she only got to go to the grocery store that day. But Pearl lives in gratitude for what she has had and what she currently has. So how can this apply to you as you attempt to bring organization into your home or small business? Organizing is a big project. It can be overwhelming which causes one to be frustrated and unmotivated. What if everyday as you laid your head on the pillow you gave thanks for what you were able to accomplish that day? No matter how great or small your organizational task was that you accomplished, be grateful for it. As you build up your “attitude of gratitude,” your motivation will increase and more and more will be accomplished. I challenge you to try for the next 41 days. It is said that it takes 41 days to break a habit. Try it! Let me know you are taking on this challenge and I’ll be happy to motivate you each day for the next 41 days. Email me at info@reginasanchez.com to take the 41 Day Challenge! Submitted by Regina Sanchez, Professional Organizer, & Certified Photo & Home Movie Organizer info@ReginaSanchez.com, www. Southern Charm and Environmentally Friendly at the Inn at Middleton Place in Charleston

T

he Inn at Middleton Place opened in 1987 in Charleston, South Carolina and was immediately hailed for its modern design and environmentally-sensitive layout. The Inn was designed and executed by W.G. Clark and Charles Menefee of Charleston. Lead architect W.G. Clark approached the design with a variety of factors in mind. First, he wanted the buildings to complement historic Charleston architecture; more specifically, the architectural ruins that seem to be emerging out of the earth and ancient forests and can still be found throughout the Low Country. Clark also wanted the Inn’s buildings to blend into the natural landscape and that it certainly does. As few trees as possible were removed or disturbed during construction, and over the years, fig vines have grown to cover many of the Inn’s exterior walls. As soon as you drive onto the grounds and get out of your car, it feels like you have walked into an enchanted forest inhabited by elves and fairies. By design, the woods surrounding the Inn seem to be reclaiming the buildings, blending them seamlessly into the 100-yearold live oaks, Spanish moss, and other flora found along the banks of the Ashley River. Even the Inn’s 55 guest rooms, with their extensive use of cypress and minimal apparent design remind one more of a quaint cabin in the woods or the hold of some ancient ship. Clark once wrote of his philosophy of architecture that all building should be atonement for the disturbance of the land. “At the necessary juncture of culture and place, architecture seeks not only the minimal ruin of landscape, but something more difficult: a replacement of what was lost with something that atones for that

loss,” he wrote in a 1991 essay titled Replacement. “In the best architecture, this replacement is through an intensification of the place, where it emerges no worse for human intervention, where culture’s shaping of the place to specific use results in a heightening of the beauty of the landscape. In these places we seem worthy of existence.” The Inn at Middleton Place is a prime and successful example of that sentiment. Today the Inn at Middleton Place is one of the more romantic getaways in Charleston and draws out-of-town visitors and locals alike. They are drawn to the natural beauty of the dirt paths, landscape, and waterway that surround the property. Admission to Middleton Place – home to America’s oldest formal landscaped gardens – helps seal the experience, and is included with each room rental. Submitted by Dr. Diane Hayden. DIY Homemade Coconut Yogurt By Julie Wern

Y

ogurt is all the health rage these days. However, there are several problems with commercial yogurt in supporting the microbiome. Commercial yogurt is often fermented for a shorter duration than generally recommended, meaning that your typical grocery store yogurt may not contain ideal levels of probiotics. Further, most yogurts contain added sugar, preservatives, binders, and fillers that can irritate or otherwise harm the gut, thus rendering the probiotics less effective. Finally, many people are vegan or have a dairy sensitivity, which has led to the growth of an array of non-dairy substitutes such as soy and coconut milk yogurt. Coconut yogurt can be a great alternative for vegans or those with food sensitivities or gut issues. Coconut in general tends to be relatively hypoallergenic, unlike the bases for other non-dairy substitutes like soy. Further, coconut contains medium-chain triglycerides, fats that are easily digested and converted to quick energy. However, commercial coconut milk suffers from the same limitations as traditional yogurt such as insufficient fermentation time and the addition of preservatives and binders. For those with digestive issues or food sensitivities, thickeners such as guar gum can sometimes cause digestive distress. Also, many of the thickeners used are not appropriate for those attempting certain elimination or autoimmune diets, where additives derived from grains or beans are disallowed. Making coconut yogurt from home is not only easy, but solves the above problems. It is economical, flexible, and free of unwanted fillers. The flexibility comes with the ability to use either a pre-made probiotic starter, which can be purchased online or from most health food stores, or your favorite probiotic supplement. The key is to look for starters and probiotic supplements with high microbial levels that have a diverse range of probiotic species, particularly from the bifidum and lactobacillum families. Unlike cow’s milk, which thickens naturally with fermentation, coconut milk requires a thickener to give it a yogurt-like consistency. I like to thicken coconut yogurt with high quality grass fed gelatin in order to derive gut health benefits from collagen, but vegan alternatives like pectin are also possible (see this recipe for vegan coconut milk yogurt http://www.culturesforhealth.com/vegan-yogurt-recipe/) When buying a starter make sure it is labeled “non-dairy”. Some starters, particularly specialty ones bought online, may require slightly different preparation methods. It is important to follow those guidelines over the following recipe, as different probiotic combinations may require different methods. Finally, if you need to avoid thickeners derived from legumes note that most commercial brands of coconut milk contain guar gum, which is extracted from guar beans. Guar gum-free coconut milk (Arroy D and Natural Value are two brands I like) can be found in some stores and online. You can also make your own quick coconut milk by blending one part unsweetened coconut 12

Homemade Coconut Yogurt Adapted from “Against all Grain”, by Danielle Walker. Ingredients: • 2 13.5 ounce cans unsweetened coconut milk • 3 teaspoons unflavored powdered gelatin, preferably grass fed • 2 teaspoons honey • dairy free probiotic yogurt starter or 1 50 billion IU probiotic capsule • 1 sterilized quart jar 1. Place 1/4 cup coconut milk in a wide shallow bowl. Sprinkle gelatin over it evenly and allow to bloom for 10 minutes. 2. Heat the remaining coconut milk in a saucepan over medium heat until it reaches 150° 3. Allow to cool to 110° then whisk in the honey and the starter or probiotic. 4. Pour mixture through a mesh sieve into sterilized jar and screw on the lid. 5. Place the jar in the bottom of dehydrator and ferment at 110115° for 24 hours. The coconut cream and liquid will likely have separated. Shake well, then place in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours to allow the gelatin to set. Once set, blend well in a blender or with a stick blender for the smoothest product. If you do not have a dehydrator or yogurt maker, you can ferment the jars in your oven, turned off, WITH OVEN LIGHT ON. See this article for instructions on making coconut yogurt in Crock Pot (http://www.culturesforhealth.com/how-to-makeyogurt-in-crock-pot) Note that whatever method you use, your mixture should not ferment in temperatures over 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Ideal temperature is 110 degrees. Check your yogurt periodically with a good quality temperature probe if using the oven or crockpot method.

with 2 parts hot water until completely smooth and then straining the mixture through a nut milk bag or a large piece of cheesecloth to separate the solids from the milk. Say to Fear, Stress and Anxiety, Naturally By Diane Bahr-Groth, CH, TFT-Adv

O

ne only needs to glance at the newspaper headlines or listen to a radio or news broadcast to know that the world we live in can at times be very fear-provoking and stressful. Most of us live in a fast paced environment in an age of high speed technology fraught with continuous pressure and perpetual change. In today’s chaotic and sometimes frightening world we may find ourselves, our children or loved ones filled with stress and anxiety, unable to create a sense of peace. Thankfully, today, there is hope to help quickly dissolve stress. Thought Field Therapy™, the Callahan Techniques © and Hypnosis can be a natural, fast, very effective and integral part of the healing process. They quickly help to reduce the severity of fear, anger, loss and grief as well as negative thoughts, feelings and emotions related to perceived or real life events. The combination of these amazing therapies is the perfect marriage of two natural stress reduction techniques which can create almost instantaneous life-changing experiences and result in feelings of deep peace and relaxation. Thought Field Therapy™ Dr. Roger Callahan, noted clinical psychologist, began exploring alternative therapies in the early 1980’s, searching for a faster and better way to help those suffering from emotional distress. After years of research he developed Thought Field Therapy™, a unique therapeutic process that has a remarkably high rate of effectiveness and can elicit immediate, lasting, measurable and unparalleled results for those suffering from a wide variety of problems such as fears, phobias, anxiety, stress and even PTSD, often within minutes. The use and discovery of the TFT™ system has been at the forefront of the new field of energy psychology and brief therapy. This powerful method integrates the sciences of acupuncture, the meridian system and applied kinesiology with the associated emotional problem to successfully eliminate negative and often debilitating emotional and physical responses. While stimulating specific meridian points in a precise order and thinking about the upsetting issue, one utilizes the power of the body’s own bio-energy system to release the unwanted negative response. TFT™ techniques can help to rapidly alleviate emotional distress with profound and measurable results. Hypnosis It is a well-established fact that Hypnosis, also known as Therapeutic Hypnosis, is widely recognized by researchers as a very safe, natural and enjoyable state of deep physical and emotional relaxation. Hypnosis may possibly even be as old as mankind itself. And

yet, to some, the very word still conjures up thoughts of creepy old castles, thunderstorms and helpless victims in a zombie-like trance. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. The old myths and misconceptions about hypnosis have given way to proven, scientifically, sound applications. Today, hypnosis has gone mainstream. Over the years millions of people world-wide have benefited from its use. Men, women and children are using hypnosis regularly and their doctors are recommending it for help with many problems from arthritis to childbirth to stress reduction. Major hospitals across the U.S. are using hypnosis to speed surgical recovery, heal fractures weeks faster and assist in reducing pain and improve healing of burns. It can help to alleviate negative thoughts, feelings and beliefs as well eliminate the emotional blockages preventing one from accomplishing personal goals. Hypnosis can be used as an effective tool for everything from self-esteem to behavior modification. Traditional therapeutic hypnosis has been a very successful tool for weight loss. Now many who prefer to avoid gastric band surgery can use the new Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis program as well. Smoking cessation, sleep issues, success, memory, fear, motivation and healing are commonly helped through the use of Hypnosis. Stress, Fear, emotional and physical traumas may deplete a person’s physical energy as well as cause a multitude of other issues. Western medicine is only now beginning to understand that health and illness is related to our emotional state of inner harmony and balance. Holistic Treatment of Acne By Lara O’Neil, APRN

I

t’s that time of year again! We can start “stripping away the layers” and look forward to going outside without bundling up first. It is the season for events like proms, dances, graduations, recitals and parties. It is a time you especially want to look and feel your best! It can be very disheartening, and a big blow to the self-esteem when you struggle with acne or even an occasional pesky pimple. There are many topical acne products on the market, both overthe-counter as well as prescription medications. But acne, as well as any skin issue, is not a superficial or “skin-deep” problem, but rather a sign of imbalance in the body. Most of the commercially available products can actually have long-term detrimental effects to the skin, even though they may carry some immediate improvement. It is beneficial to approach the treatment of acne holistically, meaning to look at the root problem, address any imbalances, and to treat it as naturally as possible for better long-term results. Anti-Inflammatory Diet You may have heard over and over again the recommendation for a healthy diet for many health problems. The root cause of acne is inflammation, so you will see amazing results with an anti-inflammatory diet, as simple as that. Limit dairy and sugar- they are the 2 biggest culprits in the fight against acne. In 2005, researchers studied data from the famous Nurses Health Study, and found that participants who drank more milk as teens had much higher rates of severe acne than those who had little or no milk as teens. In other studies of over 10,000 adolescents, a direct link existed between the amount of milk consumed and the severity of acne. Completely remove dairy from your diet for one month and see the results for yourself! Limit your sugar, especially processed white sugar, and you will also notice a huge difference in your skin. Other commonly inflammatory foods are gluten, soy and eggs. Increase your intake of organic vegetables and healthy protein and fats like grass fed meat, fish, coconut oil and avocados. And try to stay away from hydrogenated fats, the “bad fats”, like processed foods made with canola and vegetable oils.

Important Nutrients Zinc is important for the control of acne and can also help repair the gut lining. B complex vitamins are especially helpful if you are under stress (that’s a lot of us), have a vegetarian diet, or on the birth control pill. Supplements Probiotics- a good high quality probiotic is a helpful supplement in the treatment for acne to help kill off the bad bacteria in the digestive tract. The gut microbiome is connected to the skin microbiome. A gut microbiome (the delicate balance of microorganisms that live in our digestive tract) that is out of balance can contribute to a vast array of health problems. Particularly pay attention to this one if you also have digestive issues like gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation or heartburn. Essential Fatty Acids- Studies have shown that evening primrose oil can reduce acne breakouts and help balance hormones. Linoleic acid plays an important part in maintenance of epidermal integrity. Omega 3 ‘s also can help reduce inflammation and may play a role in maintaining skin health. If you are taking a fish oil supplement, it is important that you get a clean source (free of mercury, etc.). And the best source is from the foods that naturally contain omega 3’ssuch as fatty fish, walnuts and flaxseeds. Curcumin is another anti-inflammatory supplement (from turmeric which is actually a widely used spice in Indian cuisine). It also may help manage the bacterium that triggers acne. Topical Treatments While healing from the inside is always the best medicine, there are some natural topical treatments that are helpful in treating acne and pimples. Essential oils- black cumin seed oil is excellent for acne. Extensive studies have been carried out on Nigella Sativa for a wide spectrum of actions including its therapeutic properties of the plant for the skin. You can also try tea tree oil and lavender oil, which all can help heal the skin when directly applied. Some people can be sensitive, so always do a test area first, dilute it, and use a 100% organic high quality brand.

Neem oil- various parts of the neem tree has been used for centuries in traditional Indian medicine for skin disease. You can get an Ayurvedic preparation of neem oil combined with other skin healing oils so that it doesn’t smell as bad or coagulate as quickly in cold weather as plain neem oil often does. Apple Cider Vinegar toner- apple cider vinegar got a lot of attention a few years back when Scarlett Johannson sang its praises for the treatment of her own acne. You can make your own toner with 1-part vinegar to 2-3 parts water. It is important to use organic, unfiltered and unpasteurized. The theory behind its miracle is that it helps return the natural acidity to our skin and restores the skin’s natural barrier to germs, bacteria and pollution as well as dissolving dead skin cells.

Enjoy Springtime Without Allergies

By Craig Fasullo, ND

A

fter a long cold northeast winter, the light and warmth of the spring season is always a refreshing balm to the body and soul. The fresh green growth, the sun’s mounting heat, the song of returning birds – these all call us to spend more time out of doors after our extended hibernation. Unfortunately for many individuals, this breath of fresh air is sullied by a rapid increase in uncomfortable allergic symptoms. Seasonal allergies are the fifth most common chronic medical condition in America, and sufferers will be all too intimately familiar with the typical presentation – itchy, running eyes and nose, sneezing, upper respiratory congestion, and headache. Many people survive the season only with the daily use of one or more over-the-counter allergy medications, which do their part to reduce symptoms but often are accompanied by bothersome side effects such as drowsiness or irritability. Fortunately, there is another way to treat seasonal allergies, and in many cases even reduce them entirely. Consider the Cause So where do allergies come from? As with many medical conditions, there is a genetic component that is fixed. Parents that suffer from allergies tend to have more allergic children. But there are many other controllable factors as well. Unsurprisingly, air quality is a significant factor. Regular exposure to tobacco smoke and living in an industrialized (polluted) area both increase risk. Additionally, research increasingly shows that regular exposure to naturally present levels of bacteria and viruses earlier in life lowers risk of developing allergies later on. So parents are recommended to lay off the antibacterial soaps and wipes that seem to have increased in popularity in the past number of years. Children who have had more regular intake of fermented foods also show reduced allergic symptoms in adulthood, suggesting a relationship between the digestive system and healthy immune function. Indeed, from a naturopathic perspective, this a key consideration in getting to the potential underlying causes of many allergic conditions. The Digestive Link The last decade has seen an explosion of research into the vital function of the gut microbiome (a system of naturally occurring beneficial bacteria) in all manner of health issues. What has evolved is the understanding that there is a strong relationship between a healthy digestive system and a healthy immune system. In fact, 70% of our immune system is actually in our gastrointestinal system, within what is known as GALT - gut associated lymphatic tissue. So it should be of no surprise that maintaining a healthy digestive system is an imperative foundation for reducing all manner of allergies, including hay fever. Eating a broad spectrum of fruits and vegetables and avoiding heavily processed foods filled with sugar and preservatives is a great first step. It is also important to work with your physi16

cian to identify and eliminate any dietary allergies or intolerances, which may be causing an increased level of inflammation throughout the body. Clinically, we see this as one of the most important steps in actually reducing the severity of seasonal allergies over the longer term. Additionally, a broad spectrum probiotic supplement taken regularly can reduce seasonal symptoms. Symptomatic Support As naturopathic physicians, we are always working to identify and treat the underlying causes of disease. But as springtime is upon us, it is also important to consider the many tools at our disposal in the reduction of allergic symptoms. Most people find a combination that works well for them without the uncomfortable side effects common with OTC medications. Quercetin - A naturally occurring antioxidant, quercetin is found in many of the foods we eat, including apples, onions, grapes, and black tea. It has been shown to have anti-histamine effect when taken regularly in larger doses. Vitamin C – We are all familiar with the importance of vitamin C for a healthy immune system. In addition to anti-histamine effects of its own, vitamin C increases the effectiveness of bioflavonoids such as quercetin, so these are most effective when used in combination. Vitamin D – Levels of vitamin D are often lowest in the spring, following the long winter of reduced sun exposure. Maintaining optimal levels through the year can reduce seasonal allergy symptoms. Herbal Medicine – There are many herbs that help to reduce the symptoms of seasonal allergies. One of our favorites at the office is stinging nettle (Urtica dioica). It has a powerful anti-histamine effect, and is very safe even at high doses. Additionally, nettle has a general anti-inflammatory effect in the body, and offers the added benefit of being high in vitamins and minerals. Homeopathy – There are a number of homeopathic remedies that can be effective in the treatment of seasonal allergies. The correct remedy will often rapidly reduce symptoms, can be taken as often as necessary, and has no side effects. Your naturopathic physician can recommend the appropriate remedy based on your individual symptom picture. Other Helpful Tips For individuals suffering from seasonal allergies, it is important to take steps to reduce the allergic load – i.e., lower exposure to

irritating allergens. This might include showering before bed, cleaning bedsheets regularly, or keeping a HEPA quality air filter in the bedroom. The daily use of a neti pot or sinus rinse can be life changing for many allergy sufferers, simply by removing the accumulated pollen from the nostril cavity where it is causing irritation. Staying Healthy Using naturopathic medicine to reduce symptoms in the short term, while working on improving digestive health and lowering overall inflammation is the best route toward reducing the impact that allergic rhinitis has on your life. In fact, the treatment of seasonal allergies is a yearlong endeavor. Research shows a strong connection between severity of allergic symptoms and levels of stress and anxiety – yet another reason to find tools to manage the daily stressors in your life. Your naturopathic doctor will work with you to develop a comprehensive plan to improve your health this season, and in the months and years ahead. You deserve to fully embrace the joy and delight that is springtime! Dr. Fasullo has a family practice in Manchester, CT at Connecticut Natural Health Specialists. Financial Survival of a Divorce – Part II The 9 Most Costly Mistakes to Avoid By Bill Donaldson

T

his article is a continuation from Part 1 featured in our January magazine. If you are going through or preparing to go through a separation, I don’t have to tell you it can be a traumatic time. And when you are forced to make some big decisions in the midst of that turmoil, it can cloud your thinking. To make matters worse, the financial details around divorce is foreign to most of us – the combination of these two factors can make decision making during this time perilous. After many years of helping people through these times, I am sharing a top ten list. In this article, lets look at 4-6. Mistake #4: Not Understanding the Rules of Retirement Accounts Normally, distributions from a retirement plan prior to age 59 ½ are considered “early distributions” and are subject to a 10% penalty tax as well as ordinary income tax. An exception to this rule, however, is a transfer to an ex-spouse as part of a divorce settlement. A Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) is typically used to affect this transfer. Income taxes still apply, so any assets you receive from a “qualified plan”, such as a 401(k), will be subject to a mandatory 20% tax withholding. For example, if you are awarded a $100,000 distribution from an ex-spouse’s 401(k) you will actually receive only $80,000 due to the withholding. To avoid this mandatory withholding, the transfer must be made directly to another retirement account, such as your own IRA. Once the assets are in your retirement account, you are now subject to the early distribution rules. If you need some of the assets to live on, or pay bills, make sure you take them out prior to transferring them to an IRA to avoid the 10% penalty. It is important to note that IRA’s are not qualified plans, so a QDRO is not needed to divide the assets. The downside is that you are not allowed to take a direct distribution; you must deposit any distribution from an IRA directly to your own IRA. If a check is sent to you, you must deposit the money into your own IRA within 60 days to avoid a taxable distribution. It’s always best to transfer funds directly between accounts to avoid the 60-day requirement. Mistake #5: Overlooking Debt and Credit Reporting Issues Nothing is worse than starting out a new life with bad credit. Several steps can be taken during the divorce process to minimize the chances of this occurring. First, obtain a copy of your credit report from all three reporting agencies: Equifax, TransUnion and Experian. This will identify all joint accounts, accounts you may not have been aware of, and any potential credit problems. You are allowed one free credit report per year, and can obtain it by going to www.annualcreditreport.com. 18

Natural Nutmeg - April 2016

Be careful about closing down joint accounts. If possible, it’s better to have one of the account holders removed to preserve the credit history of that account. If you don’t have your own credit card and lack a good credit history, you should apply for a card while you are still married. If you wait until after the divorce, you will probably find it quite challenging to obtain credit – especially in these economic times. Regarding income tax debt, even if the divorce is final, you may not be exempt from future tax liability. For three years after the divorce, the IRS can perform a random audit of a divorced couple’s joint tax return. If it has good cause, the IRS can question a joint return for seven years. To avoid any potential problems down the road, your divorce agreement should have provisions that spell out what happens if any additional penalties, interest or taxes are found as well as where the funds come from to pay for any expenses associated with an audit. There is also innocent spouse relief if your ex has created a tax problem and you can show that you had no involvement. This relief is not granted easily, so if there are potential tax problems please consult with a professional. Mistake #6: Failure to Consider the Impact of Taxes Capital Gain Tax It’s imperative that you understand the potential tax liability of your assets. As an example, you may be offered an investment account worth $150,000, but the cost basis is only $50,000. That means there is a capital gain of $100,000 that you must pay at minimum long-term capital gains tax (currently up to 23.8%). This simple oversight could result in a $23,800 tax bill should you liquidate the asset! In the case of your personal residence, you and your spouse are each allowed a $250,000 capital gain exclusion if you’ve lived in your home for at least 2 of the past 5 years. The mistake I see is where the home is “quit claimed” from one spouse to the other per the divorce agreement, then sold later with a large capital gain. Now there is only a $250,000 exclusion against the gain where there could have been $500,000 had they understood the tax rules. In a divorce, if the home is owned jointly, the IRS allows each spouse to keep his or her $250,000 exclusion even when one moves out. The “use” rule of two out of the last five years is waived under this exception as long as both spouses meet the ownership test. So before there is any change of ownership of the marital home, be sure these issues are addressed.

Income Tax Income taxes are effected primarily by alimony payments. Alimony is taxable to the receiver and tax deductible by the payor. Essentially income is shifted from one spouse to the other. Mistakes are made when the impact of this additional tax is not fully considered. Does the alimony push the receiver into higher tax brackets where certain benefits are phased out or lost completely? Does it trigger Alternative Minimum Tax? Without a full analysis, significant tax dollars are often thrown away. Filing Status An important tax decision to make is when to finalize the divorce. If you are still married on 12/31 of the tax year, you must file as married either jointly or separately. If you were divorced prior to 12/31 you will each file individual returns. The difference in total tax liability could be substantial, however this is an often-overlooked area. Your best course of action is to consult with a tax professional regarding these options so that you can make the best decision for your situation. Really LIVING with Food Allergies By Natalie Griffin

R

esearchers estimate that over 15 million US citizens suffer from food allergies. The allergy can range in severity from mild examples of itchy mouth after eating a food, to life threatening anaphylaxis (closing of the airway). According to a study released in 2013 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food allergies among children increased approximately 50% between 1997 and 2011. Even though so many Americans are affected by food allergies, there is no clear reason for the massive increase. While my lips swell up like Angelina Jolie’s after I eat a bunch of shrimp, I have never considered myself as one of the millions of Americans living with food allergies. However, I do work with many clients at The Center for Shamanic Arts who are working with food allergies and my go to shamanic practitioner for this support, is Nicole Lewis. Nicole is Certified as a Medicinal Aromatherapist, Health Coach and Energy Worker. I spoke with her this week to get some advice about how to really live with food allergies. Natalie: So, how did you become passionate about supporting people with food allergies? Nicole: For six months, I had been having slight reactions to foods that I was eating. Sometimes I would get hives, other times my lips would itch, but I wasn’t putting two and two together. Then one Easter, my mom made meatballs - really they are fantastic! She also made soy meatballs for my dad, who doesn’t eat meat. The meatballs were packaged together in the fridge overnight. The next morning, I woke up and popped a meatball in my mouth and a few minutes later, I noticed my breathing had become labored. By dinner time, my airway was so swollen due to an anaphylactic reaction, that I had to be rushed to the ER. That got my attention! The doctors told me that I had an allergic reaction and I needed to go to the allergist. I had the Comprehensive Combination Panel test, and sure enough, they discovered I was allergic to soy and had a slight allergy to wheat - these allergies often go together. At first, I felt relieved to know that these strange symptoms had a diagnosis. Then a few minutes later I was having anxiety because I was afraid of how I might have to change my life. I was overwhelmed. Natalie: Did you have anyone to guide or support you? Nicole: The Allergist sent me to a Nutritionist. I know there are many amazing nutritionists out there, but this woman must have been tired or something because she gave me three recipes and said “Good luck!” as I left her office! Natalie: Wow! How did you deal with the changes that became necessary for your health? Nicole: I was sad and for a while I had a self-pity party! When you start to read the ingredients, that is when you realize that so 20

Natural Nutmeg - April 2016

much of what you love to eat contains soy or wheat and could potentially land you in the ER! I had so much to learn and much of it I learned by making mistakes. The summer after the diagnosis, I was in the hospital 5 times. One time, I rolled a garbage can back to the house and it must have had soy on the handle, on a trash bag, I’m not sure, but I started to feel my throat close up and had to go to the ER. Another time, I was at restaurant and apparently they didn’t clean the grill between orders and there was cross contamination with a soy product. Even my shampoo seemed out to get me! Soy! In shampoo! I was back in the ER. I realized that I couldn’t be the only person in the world with food allergies. There has to be info out there. So, I started researching obsessively trying to figure out what I could eat and what I couldn’t eat. I found that eating a whole grain, plant based diet with sustainably sourced lean protein worked best for me. I knew I wanted to help other people who were struggling with the same process. So I enrolled in the Health Coaching program at Institute for Integrative Nutrition. My goal was to learn how to support others with food allergies and to help make their transition easier. Natalie: How would people know if they have food sensitivities or allergies? Nicole: People with food allergies generally feel immediate discomfort after they eat, which can present as any of the following: bloated, gassy, uncomfortable, or even a full blown anaphylactic episode. In our culture it is almost celebrated to be uncomfortable after we eat, but that isn’t what nature intended. Food should help us not hurt us. Natalie: How best can we support ourselves once we know what we are dealing with? Nicole: I always recommend making a Food Diary. Write what you eat, when you eat it, and how you feel afterwards. It is detective work about your health, not about a diet. You want to detect what is causing the reaction. When you have a food diary, you can work off of your own research when you partner with your Doctor. That way you can advocate for yourself and become a good leader in your own journey to optimal health. We are affected by our foods now more than ever due to how our food is processed in the US. It is important to know your own body. Natalie: What resources are there to support people in really living with a food allergy?

When I work with clients I like to help them find the gift hidden in the allergies itself. Now I look at my food allergy as a gift in every way. I have the gift of health. I know how food is processed. I know about GMO’s and antibiotics in our food supply. Having food allergies has helped guide me on a path of eating organic food and eating a mostly whole grain, plant based diet. And it feels great! Now, I listen to my body. When my body wants meat I eat it. When it doesn’t, I don’t. I feel more empowered now than ever before.

We work together to figure out a person’s “Power Foods” and build recipes from this foundation of power vs. suffering. We find meals that are delicious, easy and work for them and their families.

Once you heal the fear and anxiety of having a food allergy, you can create a life where you can really enjoy food that is healthy, beautiful and make you feel good! Really living is about nourishing the soul. When I work with clients it is an important part of the process to identify the many ways that we are nourished, including chocolate, conversation and poetry.

Nicole: People that are not food sensitive can sometimes be intimidated by hosting someone with food allergies and this can leave the person with allergies feeling left out. As the host, never be afraid to reach out to the guests and ask for favorite recipes. Often people will offer to bring a favorite dish or gladly share a delicious recipe.

This is the key to really living no matter what your personal situation is, we have to create recipes for our own happiness. When we stop to think about it, our happiness is not food dependent so a full rich flavorful life is available to all of us! Natalie: How can a person benefit from working with a Health Coach? I want my clients to benefit from the time and mistakes that I made with my learning curve! The first thing I have clients do is create a food journal. I also equip them with various tools and practices from yoga to help them get in touch with their body and their moods. Our mental habits, emotional systems and energetic bodies are all connected to how we eat and what we eat. The healing has to happen on all levels for it to work. When I work with people with food sensitivities, I help them break down the process so they can see the gifts and the way forward. Once they see that they don’t have to eat twigs and leaves forever, my clients become more hopeful. For some clients the transition can be difficult due to beliefs about self and food that were inherited from family and from our cultural influence. I work with my clients with the underlying beliefs and energy blocks to taking care of themselves and their body.

Natalie: Let’s talk about parties! If you are the host, what is the right thing to do when you know some guests are food sensitive? AND what if you are the guest? How can you minimize anxiety when going to a party where you know the host is not hip to reading labels?

As the guest, always be prepared. Let your host know that you have a food allergy and offer to bring a dish that you love - either for yourself, or bring a dish big enough to share. To reduce anxiety about a potential ER visit, I recommend eating before you go, just in case the party doesn’t offer the kind of fare that you require. While at the party enjoy the company and focus on the nourishment available from getting to know people and being with friends. In general, eat local and in season. Stay away from processed foods and find ways to nourish yourself with activities and relationships. Food is meant to fuel our lives and dreams, high-vibe food creates a high-vibe life!

Fire Up Your Metabolism Strategies to Ignite Your Fat-Burning Potential By Diane Hayden, PhD

W

ouldn’t it be great if you could burn fat all day long instead of just during your exercise session? Research shows that there are some proven strategies to increase your metabolic rate and burn fat for longer periods throughout the day. To understand how metabolic rate can be increased, we must first understand normal glucose and insulin metabolism. After a meal, blood sugar increases and triggers an increase in insulin. This sends a signal for sugar to be taken up into muscle and fat cells until there is a drop in blood sugar. Many people have created a dysfunction in this system from over-consumption of carbohydrates (as simple sugars) and saturated fats, causing insulin to be more dominant. This is a signal for fat to be stored. In addition, chronic high stress situations release cortisol and other chemicals in the body that signal fat to be stored. This dysfunction is typically due to poor eating habits, physical inactivity, and stress. However, with some simple changes to your diet, exercise program, and lifestyle, anyone can rev up their metabolism and start burning more calories throughout the day. 1. Eat enough of the right food in the right amount and right proportions. Doing this on a daily basis will help get your metabolic rate functioning correctly again and even speed it up. The right food means healthy, lean protein (chicken, wild salmon, tuna, egg whites), low glycemic index carbohydrates (oatmeal, wholegrain bread, apples, berries), and healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, almonds, sunflower seeds). The right amount means that you have calculated how many calories you need on a daily basis to maintain a healthy weight, and you are knowledgeable about portion sizes (the biggest culprit in weight gain!). The right proportions means balancing your meals with carbs, fat, and protein. A good ratio to start with is 40-50% carbohydrate, 30% protein (or 1 gram per pound of body weight), and 20-30% fat. Then space your meals evenly throughout the day as to maintain less fluctuation in your glucose and insulin levels. Five to six smaller meals a day is much healthier than 2-3 larger meals. Many people think that in order to lose weight they need to cut calories. Well, this may be

true if you’re eating at McDonald’s every day and taking in twice the amount of calories you need on a daily basis. But for the average person, it’s not too many calories that is the problem – it’s not enough of the right kind of calories. 2. Add strength training to your exercise routine. Strength training triggers your body’s release of growth hormone, which is essential for fat burning and increasing your metabolic rate. Numerous studies have shown that participating in a strength training session pumps up your metabolism for 2-3 hours post-exercise and sometimes even longer. 3. Change up your aerobic exercise routine with interval training. The higher the exercise intensity, the greater amount of fat and carbohydrate burned during the exercise session. An added benefit of high intensity training is that more fat will be burned post-exercise during your recovery period. Instead of running for 30 minutes at 70% of your max heart rate, try interspersing one minute sprints. Sprint for one minute and slow to a light jog for two minutes. Repeat until reaching 30 minutes. 4. Get enough sleep. All the benefits of the right diet and the right exercise program can be negated if you’re not getting enough sleep. Growth hormone is released while you sleep and is necessary for rebuilding muscle and many other important metabolic functions. Add all these up and you’re on the right path for firing up that metabolic rate and burning more fat all day long! Submitted by Dr. Diane Hayden. The Horror of Histamine! By Jessica Pizano

A

fter a long, cold winter we are finally starting to see the early signs of spring. The snow has melted. The temperatures are warming. Birds once again tweet happily from the trees. There are lovely green buds forming on all the trees and the daffodils are once again starting to pop up their cheerful yellow splendor. Everything is perfect! Well, almost everything. That’s right; it is hay fever season again. Your eyes are itchy and watery, you can’t stop sneezing, and the congestion is driving you nuts! Sound familiar? If so, before you reach for your antihistamine let’s take a look at how our body breaks down histamine and the functional medicine way of dealing with allergies. Histamine Histamine is actually a neurotransmitter (brain chemical). This means that it has functions well beyond just allergies. There are four types of histamine receptors (H1R-H4R). The two types of histamine that are best understood and most relevant are histamine one (H1) and histamine two (H2). H1 is found in the intracellular pathway and is generally related to symptoms of nasal allergies, hives, and asthma. H2 is found in the extracellular pathway and is primarily found in the gut where it regulates the release of hydrochloric acid (HCL). H1 blockers are medications such as Benadryl, Zyrtec, Claritin and Allegra. H2 blockers are medications including Pepcid and Zantac. When looking at how best to help with allergies, it is important to look at the biochemistry of histamine, particularly how it is broken down. This is true because in order to break down histamine we require specific enzymes. All enzymes require cofactors which are generally vitamins and minerals. This means that there are nutritional solutions to histamine problems. First, let’s explore diamine oxidase (DAO). This enzyme is necessary for the breakdown of histamine in both the intracellular and extracellular pathways. This enzyme is highly polymorphic, meaning that genetic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPS—pronounced “snips”) sometimes referred to as mutations are relatively common (to look at your own genetics you can purchase a direct-toconsumer test such as the one offered by 23andme). When people have SNPs to this enzyme it causes histamine intolerance (HIT). Ingestion of foods that are high in histamine including alcohol, fermented foods, mature cheeses, smoked foods, shellfish, beans, nuts, chocolate, vinegar, wheat, tomatoes and citrus may exacerbate HIT. This results in symptoms including gastrointestinal complaints, migraines, fatigue, dizziness, runny nose, flushing, asthma and hives. Interestingly, elevated histamine levels also inhibit DAO causing worsening of the histamine intolerance. The DAO enzyme requires flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) as its cofactor. FAD requires the B-vitamin riboflavin (B2) for its synthesis. Therefore, those with this SNP require more riboflavin than the average person and therefore 24

Natural Nutmeg - April 2016

supplementing this vitamin may help decrease histamine intolerance. Another possible solution would be to take a supplement containing the DAO enzyme (there are several on the market). Histamine methyltransferase (HNMT) is another enzyme that is required to breakdown histamine in the intracellular pathway. It requires S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) as its cofactor. SAM is available as a supplement, but taking it can be problematic for many as it is a strong methyl donor and will greatly increase serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine which can cause anxiety. Instead, supplementing with vitamin B12 as the active methylcobalamin or folate as the active L-methylfolate can help improve methylation issues and help HNMT to work better. Alcohol Dehydrogenase (ADH) is the final step in histamine breakdown. This is the same enzyme that breaks down alcoholic beverages. This explains why some individuals flush when they drink. It is also a good reason to perhaps skip cocktails, beer, and wine during hay fever season. This enzyme actually has four different cofactors including zinc, vitamin C, thiamine (B1) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD—a niacin-based flavoprotein). Therefore taking supplemental zinc, vitamin C, thiamine, and/or niacin might also improve your allergy symptoms. Vitamin in particular is often used to help with allergies. You can safely take up to 2 grams of this vitamin daily. However, it is best to take it in smaller doses (500 mg) throughout the day for better absorption. Additional Natural Allergy Remedies Histamine is released by mast cells, a type of white blood cell that is involved in allergy and anaphylaxis. Certain substances can help stabilize the mast cells so that they do not lose their histamine load. Pharmacologically, the medication chromolyn sodium is used in this way. However, there are several natural mast cell stabilizers. Quercetin, a natural compound found in apples, onions, and capers is a wonderful natural mast cell stabilizer. Unfortunately, it is poorly absorbed (about 1%) to increase its absorption rate it is best to take it on an empty stomach about half an hour before a meal. It may be taken up to four times per day. The herb holy basil also works as a mast cell stabilizer. This is available in capsules, tinctures and even as a tea (Tulsi Tea). It also has the benefit for helping the body cope with stress. Milk thistle, an herb often used to help improve detoxification and support the liver is another mast cell stabilizer. EGCG, a constituent found in green tea is also quite helpful in stabilizing mast cells. Ellagic acid found in raspberries, strawberries, walnuts, longan seeds, mango kernel, and pomegranate may also inhibit histamine release. Feverfew, a botanical that is both anti-inflammatory and helpful for migraines, may also be helpful for stabilizing mast cells.

When mast cell stabilizers are insufficient, H1 blockers may be helpful. If you prefer to avoid medication, the herb butterbur is a wonderful natural antihistamine. In clinical trials, this herb was found to be as effective as the over-the-counter medications Zyrtec, Claritin and Allegra. As in many H1 blocking antihistamines, butterbur may cause drowsiness. Unfortunately, if you have an allergy to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, and/or daisies you will likely find that you are also allergic to butterbur as it is in the same family. In addition to mast cells, leukotrienes are also implicated in asthma and allergies. This substance causes contractions of smooth muscle in the respiratory tract that cause symptoms of asthma and allergic rhinitis. Medications such as monteleukast (brand name Singulair) are used as leukotriene agonists and are often used to help these symptoms. Fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids) is a wonderful natural leukotriene agonist. Not only will fish oil improve your allergies, but it is a fantastic natural antiinflammatory. This spring I hope that experimenting with the various vitamins, minerals, and botanicals helps to decrease your hay fever so that you may enjoy the beauty of this wonderful season. You may be amazed at just how good you feel. Consider reducing dietary histamine as well as decreasing your total histamine load is really helpful.

Food Sensitivities—Breaking Down the Basics! By Holly Niles, MS, CNS, LDN, CFSP e hear a lot about food sensitivities nowadays, with so many people avoiding one or multiple foods in their daily diets. Often, people cite food allergies, sensitivities, intolerances and/or reactivity as to the reason why they avoid certain foods.

W

Let’s start with a look at an example of our immune system and the way it defends us to keep us healthy. One of the key jobs of our immune system is to evaluate everything that comes into our body as either friend or foe. For example, when we get a cold/flu our nose can get congested and runny. The congestion is an example of the body’s response to germs. These germs that come into our body are like foreign invaders. The immune system wants to capture them and remove them from our body. Mucous can actually perform this job very effectively, although not always pleasant to experience. This type of response is exactly what we want the body to be able to do—to be on the watch for things that could harm us. With that in mind, let’s look at some of the basic definitions about the ways we can react to foods and how our immune system plays a role. Ways we react to foods Food Allergies: A rapid immune response which is why they are often life-threatening (for example, peanuts, tree nuts or shellfish allergies are some common food allergies). Food Sensitivities: A slow forming immune response which makes them more difficult to pin down (soy, dairy, and gluten can fall into both this category as well as the allergy category). Food Intolerances: Non-immune reaction to food (e.g. lactose intolerance which means you don’t digest the “sugar” of dairy in the form of lactose or MSG as a flavor enhancer/additive). An allergy is commonly diagnosed by your primary care doctor or an allergy specialist doctor like an immunologist. Food allergies have quick responses or reactions in the body like itching, pain or difficulty breathing after a small amount of the food. Food sensitivities can be harder to determine. They take longer to present and can impact the body in a number of ways. Some of these types of reactions include: digestive challenges such as bloating/constipation/nausea, sneezing, joint pain, hives, fatigue, irritability and even brain fog. When we speak about the immune system in reference to food, we’re talking more specifically about the “gut”. We know that about 70% of our immune system lives in the gut and it’s actually the gate or barrier where our digested foods cross into our blood stream for 26

Natural Nutmeg - April 2016

the body to utilize. The impact of food as a possible immune challenge is significant as we don’t want our immune system having a reaction to food. Many people have autoimmune diseases and other imbalances that are connected to a lack of immune health. Since we eat every day and often, several times per day, it’s so important to know what/if foods are a challenge for our body. If we continually eat something that the body sees as a foe, especially when our immune system is already challenged, that can create a problem for the body. Why do more people have challenges with food sensitivities and allergies? New York Times bestselling author Dr. Mark Hyman writes in his books and on his website about this increase in reactivity and why we are seeing such an increase today. Here are some of the reasons: 1. Processed food: Our American diet has more processed foods with additives and chemicals which are seen as toxins or foreign invaders and can change the environment of our “gut”, making us more sensitive. 2. Antibiotics: Research shows that antibiotics have been used too often to treat illness. Antibiotics work to kill “bad bugs” in our gut but they also kill “good bugs” that are the foundation of our immune system. This can change the landscape of our gut and make it more permeable. The increase allows our body to be more reactive to foods. 3. Poor digestion: We need to break our food down thoroughly in our digestive tract so it can be absorbed and utilized in our body. Poor digestion including low stomach acid combined with overuse of antibiotics can lead to more reactions from food. 4. Food allergies: People who have food allergies are more likely to have food sensitivities. Sometimes it can take time to isolate allergies and we can have more than one in varying degrees. 5. Stress: The gut is sometimes referred to as our second brain because of the nervous system that lives there. Chronic stress causes our body to secrete stress chemicals on a regular basis. This process wears down our immune system and makes us more susceptible to food sensitivities. How do you proceed if you think you may have food sensitivities? The gold standard to determining sensitivities is an elimination diet where you avoid the suspected foods for at least 3 weeks and up to 4-6 weeks. The most common reactive foods are: gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, peanut and corn. Other possibilities are nightshade vegetables, nuts and citrus, especially for those with inflammatory conditions. Avoiding these foods for the designated time will allow the immune system to reduce its reactivity.

Some people notice improvement in how they feel shortly after removing the food; for other people, it can take a few weeks to see improvements. In the environment of an elimination diet it’s also important to avoid processed foods, support digestion by chewing well and eating calmly and overall reducing stress. It’s best to set the elimination diet in an overall healthy lifestyle to help get the clearest feedback from your body. During this elimination diet, symptoms can reduce or go away entirely. Clients often wonder if they have to avoid the food forever. That depends on your overall health and how reactive you might be. There is a process of reintroduction to determine if the food is a challenge for you. After you have avoided the food for the designated time you may want to consider reintroducing the food. To do this, it’s optimal to add the food back in a small portion in the morning and then if that feels okay, you can double the portion later in the day and see how your feel. Then wait at least 48 hours before you add any other reactive foods. This process can provide valuable information about your body’s reactivity to foods.

It is common for people to experiment with avoiding a few foods to see if they feel better or different without eating them. You may have noticed that there are a lot more books and resources available today to walk you through this process. Here are a few books that might be helpful: The UltraSimple Diet, by Mark Hyman, M.D.; Wheat Belly, by William Davis, M.D; and Grain Brain, by David Perlmutter, M.D. Dietary changes are very helpful and you still may need more support beyond the elimination diet. A good resource for additional support are Functional Medicine and Integrative practitioners. They can offer more support, appropriate nutritional supplements and additional testing methods to help you get your body back into balance and regain your health. A Multidimensional Approach to Allergies By Eric R. Secor, Jr ND, PhD, MPH, MS, LAc, Dipl. Ac. llergies or “Allergic Diseases” are conditions in which an individual’s immune system becomes hypertensive to triggers that are harmless to others. The physiologic response of a “hypertensive” immune system gives rise to the constellation of symptoms experienced in allergies. These range from stuffy nose and runny itchy eyes, digestive complaints, dermatitis, allergic asthma and anaphylaxis, to the potentially life threatening immediate reaction driven by the Immunoglobulin E (IgE) type I response.

A

Allergy or Intolerance It’s important to distinguish an “allergy” from intolerance which is often confused or interchanged by both the public and healthcare professionals. According to the guidelines set out by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, food allergy is an adverse health effect arising from a specific immune response that occurs, reproducibly on exposure to a given food. Whereas with intolerance, foods may cause the same reproducible adverse reaction but doesn’t have a likely or established immune system response. For example, someone is “allergic” to cow’s milk due to an immune system response to milk protein (casein or whey) and therefore has a food allergy. But someone who has difficulty drinking milk due to an inability to digest lactose in milk has a food “intolerance” and this may be due to low lactase production or numerous problems with digestive system. Diagnosing intolerances and allergies can be difficult because both timing and symptoms often overlap or may be confused with other conditions such as: gas, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, fatigue or loss of energy, headaches and migraines, anxiety, depression, mood swings, poor concentration, muscle and joint pain, acne, eczema and psoriasis. Understanding and documenting an exposure “time line” can be very useful. Diagnosis of Allergies Specific diagnosis of allergies may begin with an incident where someone recalls a specific exposure and reaction. A visit to Aunt Janice’s house when the kids played with the cat (sensitization) and the sneezing, itching and watery eyes that they complained of on the return visit (re-exposure). Critical information can be gathered from a detailed exposure history. This should include: environmental exposures (home, car, work, recreation and hobbies), the diet record (all foods, beverages, condiments and eating patterns), use of personal care products, changes in clothing, jewelry, exercise and the resolution or change of symptoms during commuting, travel and vacation. Specific laboratory testing may include food and environmental allergies (IgE-dust mite, molds, peanuts, shellfish, bees and latex), drug (penicillin) or heavy metal exposures (lead, mercury) as well as inflammatory and metabolic markers. For those with insurance it is 28

Natural Nutmeg - April 2016

important to preauthorize testing. Many insurers will only pay for IgE based testing as they still consider Immunoglobulin G isotype (IgG) tests research and therefore it has been slow to be adopted into clinical care. Self-pay options for IgG testing are available and may range from $250 -$800 depending on the complexity of the panel. Treatment Options Once diagnosed, there are numerous treatment options for allergies which vary in their degree of success. Avoidance and elimination are still the gold standards but it can be difficult to avoid all trees, grass or dust. Remediate all environmental exposures; eliminate mold, reduce moisture, filter water, remove carpets, use dust mite covers, regularly change hepa filters in furnace and vacuums. Air out and regularly clean home, work environment and cars. When possible use zero or low VOC (volatile organic compound) paints and inert building materials such as glass steel, wood and tile. With severe and life threatening allergies avoidance in parallel with epinephrine auto-injectors (EpiPen® injection), diphenhydramine (antihistamines such as Benadryl) and selected steroids should be on hand and deployed based on the plan (emergency and ongoing) designed by the healthcare team. Emerging allergen immunotherapies are also being investigated for their potential in treating allergies. These therapies present small doses of the allergen to the immune system in order to “de-sensitize” it. Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) uses the tolerogenic environment of the oral mucosa and epicutaneous immunotherapy (EPIT) uses the immune cells of the epidermis to transport antigens to afferent lymph nodes to activate immune responses. SLIT and EPIT have been shown to successfully desensitize patients but additional research is needed to define optimal doses and administration protocols. With most of the non-life threatening food allergies, an Allergy Elimination Diet and or anti-inflammatory diet is very helpful. During an initial 4-8 week (transition from SAD- Standard American Diet to a safe rotation eating plan) a stricter approach should be taken. In addition to diagnosed allergens, common foods to remove may include: all gluten-containing foods including wheat, rye, oats and barley, which are commonly found in breads, pasta and other products from refined flour. Alcohol, caffeine (coffee, black teas and sodas) and soy milk, soda and fruit drinks that are high in refined sugars. Pork, cold cuts, bacon, hot dogs, canned meat, sausage and shellfish. All dairy (milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, etc.). Foods high in fats and oil, including peanuts, refined oils, margarine and shortening. All refined sugar products (candy bars and other junk food). Afterwards food may be rotated back in but both the frequency and dose must be carefully monitored. Do not start this before the holiday season if you want to be successful.

Natural Alternatives There are numerous food-based and botanical-based dietary supplements that may be useful in both the treatment and management of allergies. All plans should aim to create a solid digestive foundation which may include the use of pre –or probiotics, broad-based pancreatic enzyme support, essential fatty acids, as well as correcting Vitamin D deficiency and proper hydration. Specific supplements may include: Polyphenols and polyphenol rich foods (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries), Quercetin (flavonoid glycoside), Turmeric (Curcuma longa), Bromelain (cysteine proteases from Ananas comosus- common pineapple), Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) and Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica). For the best results in using these or other dietary supplements, partner with your healthcare team and evaluate all potential sides effects and interactions. For example, Quercetin may be metabolized through the CYP2C8 enzyme stem and high doses may affect serum levels of Taxol /Paclitaxel whereas Butterbur may contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids which can be harmful to the liver. Only high quality products that remove and test for pyrrolizidine alkaloids should be used. In NIH funded preclinical studies conducted by my research team, we have demonstrated that Bromelain can inhibit the inflammatory immune response (white blood cells, eosinophil’s and inflammatory cytokines) in Allergic Asthma (IgE egg model) approximately 50% and if treatment is begun during early sensitization, Bromelain can reduce Allergic Asthma upon reexposure approximately 90%. Future studies will determine the clinical effects in chronic recurrent rhinitis and seasonal allergies. Effects of Lifestyle Allergies and inflammation can be aggravated by an unhealthy lifestyle. Regardless of the allergy take the opportunity to improve as many aspects of your health as possible. If you smoke seek help to stop and reduce the exposure of second hand smoke (an allergen) to other family members and friends. Adopt a proactive stress management plan which may include, exercise, proper hydration and at least 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep. As adipose tissue is pro-inflammatory and may worsen allergic inflammation, work towards achieving a healthy body weight through combined strength training and cardiovascular exercise. Although allergies can be overwhelming a multidimensional approach will help with their management and ultimately help you achieve better overall health.

Have You Sneezed Yet? By Anne Mitchell, ND s your nose running and your eyes itching? Are you wheezing? Coughing? You are in good company. It’s allergy season already. Pollen allergy is one of the most common chronic diseases. Respiratory allergies affect 35 million Americans. Hartford often makes the list of the top ten worst cities in the United States for spring allergies. To make matters worse, you may be surprised to find out that many seemingly unrelated health problems can actually contain an allergic component: chronic sinusitis, IBS, gastric reflux, inflammatory arthritis, migraine headaches, ear infections, ADD, and eczema, among others.

I

Genetic Predisposition It’s not easy to understand why you react in such a wild way to your own environment. Underneath the visible reactions is a complex matrix of genetic predisposition and resulting immune and metabolic dysregulation, all triggered under certain environmental conditions. These triggers include airborne, food and water contaminants (tobacco smoke, pesticides, heavy metals, pet and pest dander, food allergens), infectious agents (viruses, molds), and stress. Under these conditions certain immune cells are over stimulated relative to others, resulting in an imbalance between Th1 dominant and Th2 dominant immune responses. Th2 dominance leads to an immune dysregulation marked by a heightened allergic response and a proliferation of inflammatory cellular mediators (e.g. cytokines, interleukins, leukotrienes). Inflammation involves excess mucous production and other irritating symptoms we call allergies. Early Bloomers The first reactions in the spring are usually to trees. In Connecticut that means that in March (though it seems earlier every year) the trees start blooming and continue producing pollen until sometime in June. It’s not the ornamental trees with brightly colored flowers that bother most allergy sufferers. Instead it’s the common plain looking trees that cause the greatest allergy symptoms. Some of the top allergy producing trees in Connecticut are Oak, Birch, Cottonwood, Maple (begins in February), Hickory, Sycamore, Walnut, Beech, and Elm. The worst days are the sunny bright days when the gentle breeze brings fresh spring air… and pollen. Pollen grains are tiny, easily carried by the wind up to 10 miles away from their source. Humid or rainy days are usually easier for pollen sensitive people because the moisture accumulates on the pollen grains in the air and they become heavy enough to fall to the ground. Mornings can be better because of the moisture in the air but the plants like this time too. They produce more pollen in the morning that will be more easily blown around as the day warms up. The medical treatment for pollen allergies is either several years of allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots), or medications that 30

Natural Nutmeg - April 2016

include antihistamines, decongestants, and leukotriene inhibitors. The more serious medications include steroids, bronchodialators and mast cell stabilizers. Sometimes the treatments are worse than the problem. Unfortunately these efforts merely mask the symptoms but do nothing at all to treat the cause. Natural medicine provides a better way to alleviate your symptoms. Natural Allergy Support The first step is to eat an anti-inflammatory diet. If there is less inflammation in your whole body, your immune system will be less reactive. Eat a colorful plant based diet. Avoid high-fat meats, fast food and packaged, baked goods that are high in trans fats and saturated fats that are pro-inflammatory. Processed meats and processed foods in general will create inflammation. Meat, dairy and eggs contain arachadonic acid that may exacerbate inflammation in large amounts. A grain based diet may trigger inflammation in some people. Focus on eating whole foods - lots of vegetables, whole grain (consider gluten-free) and lean meat and fish for protein. Specific foods can either help or harm. Eating foods that have similar proteins as your primary allergen may make your reactions worse. Birch pollen is interesting because there is a very strong crossreaction between birch pollen and several foods, especially apples but also plum, carrot, fennel, cherries, walnut, pear, potato, peaches and wheat. These birch related foods are the foods most commonly associated with oral allergy syndrome. OAS is described as isolated oral symptoms caused by labile proteins in fresh fruits and vegetables that share homology with proteins in pollens (the initial source of sensitization). That means that your mouth itches and even swells when you eat certain foods. Several clinical associations have been described (birch pollen with fruits, ragweed with melon, and mugwort with celery). The number of foods reported to be involved in the syndrome is ever increasing. Cooked forms of the foods are typically tolerated. •Pollen from alder trees can cross-react with apples, cherries, peaches, pears, parsley, celery, almonds and hazelnuts. •Cereal grains (wheat, barley, rye, and oat) share homologous proteins with grass pollens and each other. •Foods commonly reported to cross-react with latex include banana, avocado, kiwi, chestnut, potato, and papaya. •Ragweed allergies may cross react with certain seeds (sunflower), fruits (bananas, melon) and vegetables (cucumbers, zucchini) as well as the herbs echinacae and chamomille. •Individuals with grass pollen allergies may have difficulty eating melons, oranges, peaches, tomatoes, celery and sometimes wheat.

This list can’t include all cross reacting foods as there are just too many. What you need to know is that food sensitivities can make your pollen reactions worse, and vice versa. Some foods can help your reactions. •Red Wine, Apples and Onions contain quercetin, a flavonoid that helps the body fight against allergic inflammation by inhibiting the release of histamine. It is also found in berries, red grapes, black tea, broccoli and the white pulp of citrus fruits. •Flaxseed, Walnuts and Salmon are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that may help alleviate allergies by reducing inflammatory chemicals in the body. Other sources of this essential fatty acid include canola oil, pumpkin seeds, and cold-water fatty fish. •Green Tea is rich in catechin, a polyphenol (antioxidant) that inhibits the enzyme that converts histidine to histamine. For maximum benefits, use loose tea leaves instead of tea bags and pair with fruit or vegetables high in vitamin C. •Rosemary contains a substance called rosmarinic acid, a polyphenol that is believed to suppress allergic reactions and inflammation. Try adding rosemary to roast potatoes, marinades, and tomato sauces. •Tumeric boasts anti-inflammatory properties. A central ingredient in curries and other Indian dishes, it can be taken in capsules for maximum benefit. Add a little black pepper to make it work better. •Sunflower Seeds, Brazil nuts and Tuna are among the best sources of selenium which stimulates immune function. The sunflower seeds are also high in vitamin E, an anti-inflammatory. •Local Honey and Bee Pollen are helpful for some people. It’s thought that bee pollen works by desensitizing your body to the pollen. With small daily doses, your body builds up its defenses to fight off the allergens and avoid reaction in the future. •Fermented foods provide pre-biotics and probiotics to keep the microbiome in balance and help decrease the body’s inflammation. Add keifer, sauerkraut, kim chi, and other fermented foods to your diet daily.

Immune System Balance Immune system balance is the key to allergy relief. Balance, or homeostasis, is the result of every choice you make towards health. The healthier you are, the fewer symptoms you will experience. When you do need symptom relief, any of these suggestions may help. Acupuncture helps long term because it balances the body but an acupuncture treatment can provide significant relief. Homeopathy, both constitutional remedies and low potency combination remedies, can be useful. Many people do well with botanical medicines. Nettles, butterbur and ginger can all help the symptoms.

Imagine never taking another pill for allergies, or even better, imagine forgetting that you’ve suffered from allergies in the past. No more sniffing, sneezing, wheezing or itching! Allergy desensitization can be accomplished painlessly and rapidly using Advanced Allergy Technique. There are several allergy desensitization treatments available, most notably Nambrudipad’s Allergy Elimination Technique (NAET) which is the root of the current technologically sophisticated AAT treatments. Advanced Allergy Technique recognizes that your allergic reactions are a mistake in the information that is carried in the brain, the cells, the tissue, the body and the energetic field. We continually process information in the form of food, hormones, neurotransmitters, etc. Each cell speaks to its neighbors and to distant cells. Each cell is an elaborate bio-chemical computer that holds memory. The body’s over reaction to food, pollen or perfume is a damaging and damaged memory. The amazing thing is that we can repair the body’s memory by giving it the correct information as a wavelength using AAT. Elimination of the allergic reaction is achieved by stimulation of acupuncture meridians along the back along with transmitting the correct information to the body. Clearing for a specific sensitivity helps to rebalance the body’s response resulting in a marked decrease or complete resolution of symptoms. The idea that correcting the energy flow helps heal is older than acupuncture and is the basis of a myriad of healing techniques. AAT combines this ancient understanding of the human body with advanced technology to correct the body’s reactions. Most patients respond, many remarkably. Almost all experience an improvement in their overall health as well as elimination of their annoying allergic reactions. A Potentially Recurring Problem for Women & Men By Michael Dworkin, PD, CCN & J. Erika Dworkin Urinary tract infections are the second most common type of infection in the body, accounting for about 8.1 million visits to health care providers each year. Women are especially prone to UTIs for anatomical reasons. ... UTIs in men are not as common as in women but can be serious when they occur. ~ U.S. Dept of Health & Human Services NIH/National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases (www.niddk.nih.gov)

D

o you ever experience difficult, uncomfortable, or discolored urination, possibly combined with upper back, abdominal, or side pain? If so, whether a woman, man, or child, you might have a urinary tract infection (UTI). Fortunately, there are numerous natural remedies that may prevent or reduce UTI symptoms. Causes, Symptoms & Risks Microscopic organisms (e.g., fungi, viruses, and bacteria) can cause infections. Bacteria in the urinary tract (UT), usually Escherichia coli (E. coli), most commonly causes UTIs. With small projections (fimbriae), the bacteria adheres to the UT’s mucous membranes, thus avoiding being removed by the flow of urine, normally a deterrent to bacterial colonization. The bacteria’s subsequent invasion of the cells of the UT lining prevents antibiotics and the immune system from destroying it. UTIs can occur in either part of the urinary tract: (1) lower – bladder (cystitis) or urethra (urethritis); or (2) upper – ureters or kidney (acute pyelonephritis). Although typical symptoms are not always present, and UTIs can be mistaken for other conditions in older adults, lower UTI symptoms may include: (1) strong, persistent urge to urinate; (2) burning urination; (3) strong-smelling or cloudy/ red/pink (indicates presence of blood) urine; (4) the frequent, limited passing of urine; (5) discharge; or (6) pain in the pelvis/lower abdomen (women) or rectum (men). Symptoms of an upper UTI (more serious; presents risk of kidney damage) may include: (1) upper back, abdominal, and side pain; (2) high fever; (3) shaking/chills; (4) nausea; (5) vomiting; and (6) painful urination. The factors that increase the risk for UTIs include: (1) female gender (a shorter urethra closer to the anus may enhance bacterial migration to the bladder); (2) antibiotic use (see below); (3) sexual intercourse/new sexual partner; (4) certain types of birth control (diaphragms; spermicidal agents); (5) family (mother/sister) or personal history; (6) pregnancy (can shift the UT, exposing the kidney to greater risk from more easily migrating bacteria); (7) allergies to personal products that may irritate the genital region; (8) diabetes (impairs the immune system); 32

Natural Nutmeg - April 2016

(9) incontinence and urinary flow blockage (e.g., from anatomical abnormalities; kidney stones; enlarged prostate); (10) urinary catheters; and (11) menopause (low estrogen thins vaginal walls, increasing susceptibility to bacteria). Disadvantages of Conventional Treatment Most frequently using a urine dipstick test to diagnose a UTI, physicians examine urine for: (1) red/white blood cells; (2) bacteria; (3) chemicals that E. coli produces; or (4) the levels of proteins the immune system produces in response to infection. They may also use a urine culture to match an effective medication (usually an antibiotic) to the exact bacteria present, or a CT scan, MRI, or cystoscope (to examine the urethra and bladder) if a patient has been suffering recurrent UTIs. As no single antibiotic is recommended for treating every UTI, doctors generally determine which to prescribe, and for how long, according to a patient’s medical history and the location, degree, and type of infection present. A powerful, effective antibiotic for a simple infection might be prescribed for a week or more, even if symptoms resolve after a few days. UT analgesics might also be indicated to numb the bladder and urethra and relieve burning urination. The frequent recurrence of UTIs may call for: (1) low-dose antibiotics for 6 months or longer; (2) single-dose antibiotics after sexual intercourse; (3) IV antibiotics in a hospital (for a severe case); and/or (4) vaginal estrogen therapy. While traditional medicine is currently developing other treatment approaches, the preferred, widespread prescribing of antibiotics for UTIs has contributed to a largely unacknowledged United States epidemic of Candidiasis, a fungal infection of any of the Candida species (all yeasts), of which Candida albicans is the most common. By killing both the “bad” bacteria in the UT and the “good” protective bacteria in the intestines, which results in yeast overgrowth, antibiotics can ultimately undermine the immune, neurological, and endocrine (hormone) systems. Not only has antibioticsexacerbated C. albicans been reported as the most common cause of fungal UTIs (candiduria), but antibiotics can also expose a patient to as many as 56 other potential conditions and symptoms, including: ear-nose-throat/respiratory ailments; emotional problems; brain dysfunction (including ADD/ADHD); digestive ailments; chronic fatigue; skin problems; and addictions/cravings. Given the many potential side effects from excessive antibiotic consumption, including Clostridium difficile (C. dif) and antimicrobial resistance, it behooves a UTI sufferer to explore natural ways to maintain a healthy UT.

Natural Ways to Maintain a Healthy Urinary Tract While physician consultation is ideal, there are science-based natural means of protecting the UT long term and supporting it when an infection is present. Some of the more notable UTI remedies are discussed below. Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) – This wellknown antioxidant and antiviral may combat UTI bacteria and promote UT health by: (1) boosting the immune system; and (2) acidifying the urine, which may (a) inhibit the growth of infectious bacteria in the UT (this theory lacks strong clinical evidence), and (b) convert bacterial nitrites into nitric oxide, which is toxic to bacteria. After finding in one study that daily intake of 100 mg of vitamin C helped reduce UTIs in pregnant women, researchers recommended that pregnant women in populations at risk for bacteria in the urine and UTIs increase their vitamin C intake. Cranberry Extract: Cranberries contain anti-inflammatory proanthocyanidins that prevent adhesion of bacteria in the UT by rendering its cells too slippery. In one 6-month study of 137 women (age 45+) with previous UTIs in the past 12 months, researchers concluded that the administered antibiotic (trimethoprim -100mg) “had a very limited advantage” over the cranberry extract (500mg) “in the prevention of recurrent UTIs ...and had more adverse effects.” Sweetened cranberry juice is NOT equivalent to cranberry extract in UTI treatment because sugar: (1) feeds E. coli and Candida; (2) impairs immunity; and (3) increases the acid level of urine to render the environment more hospitable to E. coli (E. coli can survive in acidic environments that are lethal to other pathogens, including even urine with a pH = 2) (normal urine pH = 6.5 to 7.5). Curcumin from Turmeric: Studies have shown that this polyphenol, which combats inflammation and oxidation, has therapeutic application against bacteria including E. coli, infection, and fungus/yeast and viruses. Since it is poorly absorbed from the intestines, and is rapidly metabolized and eliminated, it is important to select one of the several available curcumin preparations that incorporate a drug delivery system. These enhance curcumin’s absorption beyond the common turmeric that is standardized to 95% curcuminoids. D-Mannose: This sugar, found in cranberries and other foods, prevents bacteria from adhering to the UT lining by binding to

the lining’s cells. In one 6-month study of 308 women with a history of recurrent UTIs, researchers compared D-mannose powder (2,000 mg) with an antibiotic commonly used to treat UTIs (Nitrofurantoin 50mg). Urging that further research be conducted, they concluded that the D-mannose and antibiotic equally “significantly reduced the risk of recurrent UTI,” and that D-mannose presented significantly lower risk of side effects and may be useful for UTI prevention. Probiotics: The recurrence of UTIs is often associated with decreased levels of Lactobacillus, one family of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Research has proven these bacteria strains in particular to be a promising natural treatment for UTIs. They are thought to heal by either: (1) competing with other bacteria for various resources; (2) boosting the immune system and secreting natural antibacterial chemicals, such as hydrogen peroxide and lactic acid; or (3) preventing pathogenic bacteria from adhering to the UT. In one study, researchers found that the two Lactobacillus bacteria strains used to treat uncomplicated recurrent UTIs (L rhamnosus GR-1; L. reuteri RC-14 ) were only slightly less effective than the antibiotic combination administered to the comparison group of postmenopausal women.

Symptom-Specific Homeopathic Remedies: Natural, well-tolerated, homeopathic remedies are FDA-approved as drugs and are considered to have no drug interactions, side effects, or toxicities. User testimonials indicate that this combination of ingredients is particularly effective for minor bladder irritation, urge to urinate, and frequent, painful, strained urination: (1) barosma crenata; (2) dulcamara; (3) terebinthina oleum; (4) thiaspi bursa pastoris; (5) triticum repens; and (6) equisetum hyemale. Some Diet & Lifestyle Choices Since diet and lifestyle choices impact UT health, practitioners generally offer these recommendations: (1) drink 64 oz of fluids/ day; (2) urinate frequently (especially after sex, and promptly upon urge onset); (3) avoid refined foods, sugar/simple carbohydrates, and red meats; (4) eliminate food allergens; (5) eat antioxidant- and fiber-rich foods; (6) apply heat to the abdomen to address UTI pain; (7) wear loose clothing during a UTI; and (8) exercise at least 30 mins/day, 5 days/ week. New Risk Detection Strategies for Heart Disease By Kenneth R Hoffman, D.Ac, L.Ac CCH s a seasoned natural medicine practitioner, I have observed over the years the baby boomer population and how they age. There is an angst that comes from experiencing our own mortality that grows with each decade of later life. I often hear the reports from my patients about the health assessment done at those milestone years such as the colonoscopy, mammograms, blood tests, stress tests, PSA testing and the list goes on and on. The purpose of this testing is purported as early detection of disease and disease prevention but I have learned some sobering facts about the effectiveness, or lack of effectiveness, should I say of all of these screenings. Of particular concern to me are those tests dealing with cardiovascular disease.

A

According to John Hopkins School of Medicine, Cardiovascular disease is the cause of more deaths than cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, and accidents combined. It is a myth that heart disease is in men only. In fact, cardiovascular diseases are the number one killer of women, as well. And the latest data tells us that about 1/3 of all cardiovascular deaths could be simply prevented. To make matters worse, conventional testing and treatment includes decades old screening that have been found to be relatively useless. Dr. David Newman, director of clinical research at Columbia University was quoted, “It appears that flipping a coin would be a more sensitive mechanism for detecting coronary artery disease than relying on a stress test.” Also, according to Charles McGee, MD, author of the book, Heart Frauds: Uncovering the Biggest Health Scan in Medical History, “conventional treatment for heart disease like coronary bypass surgery, balloon angioplasty, and cholesterollowering drugs do not work and are completely unnecessary.” And according to Princeton Longevity Center, “The major limitation of all cardiac stress tests is that it requires a high level of blockage in one or more coronary arteries to produce an abnormal result.” The amount of blockage sits around 65-70% before a stress test will be abnormal. As practitioners, we can do better for our patients. We know that early detection of risk and early intervention is the key. We also know that there have been successful natural interventions that will work when disease is caught early. So what can you do to detect problems before you have a 70% blockage in your heart, find out what the real risk is AND more importantly, what can you do about it? Well, I have uncovered some little known testing tools and procedures and applied our natural treatments and it works. One of the most important first steps in the process of recovering or disease-proofing your heart is to diagnose the problem. This does not mean a conventional textbook diagnosis but one that addresses the source of any health issues and identifies risk of the published diseases. Here are some risk detection strategies that I have integrated and used with thousands of my patients: 34

1. The Chinese Medical Diagnosis. For centuries, Chinese medicine has used one’s own body to identify areas where oxygen and blood are not properly circulating. This includes observations, palpation and complex identification of abnormalities in one’s pulse. Specifically, the location of the radial pulse on the left hand near the wrist crease. Decreased flow or a “bird beak” type pulse in this location can be an indicator of heart malfunction. Also, observation of the tongue and veins under the tongue can give us great details. Even though Chinese doctors wrote about these relationships centuries ago, a study in the journal BMC Oral Health found a relationship between hypertension and the blue veins under the tongue as well as another study that found a relationship between the observation of the tongue and Coronary Vascular disease. 2. Pulse Pressure. Using a simple test of blood pressure and calculation of the upper and lower numbers can tell us if you are at high risk for hardening of the arteries. Typically, if you subtract the top blood pressure number (systolic) from the lower number(diastolic) there should be no more than 40 points difference. Even a 10 point difference was found to increase the risk of heart disease by 20% and may indicate hardening of the arteries. 3. Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) and Digital Pulse Analysis. This is an exciting, non-invasive method of looking at heart physiology that is backed by more than 25 years of advanced research in medical physics. By using something called pulse oxymetry and advances in software, this system can measure risk of arterial stiffness and blood flow. According to the Framingham Heart Study and published in the medical journal “Circulation”, adding PWV technology to assessment lead to significant reclassification and identification of those at risk and led to better interventions. These are just a few of the tools we use in an advanced integrative medical practice. Some other tests you should know about are the Boston Heart Diagnostics which is the best of the best at looking for inflammation and various damaging cholesterol particles that can harm your heart. We also include Medical Infrared Thermography which looks for inflammation anywhere in the body especially carotid arteries and breast cancer risk, hormone testing for excess estrogen or deficient hormones and various other tools that will give us far more information than the basic stress or cholesterol test. The best part of all this testing is that when the problem is uncovered, we can develop a specific plan to restore function and reverse risk. One tool that may not be considered but should is acupuncture. By inserting fine pins into specific points on the body, we can increase flexibility in the vessels, reduce blood pressure, increase blood flow and stabilize hormones in the nervous system that damage the heart such as cortisol and adrenaline. We can strengthen the heart muscle itself and increase output through the entire system.

Also, with the use of targeted supplements and herbal formulas, inflammation can be reduced and coronary plaque can be addressed. For example, the herb Hawthorn has been shown to lower blood pressure and increase blood flow in heart failure patients. There are many, many other usual treatment strategies that are safe and non-invasive such as plenty of essential fats, CoQ10 and more. The key is to have an organized assessment and know the tools that can help. Seek out professionals who are skilled in the use of these tools and let them design a program that addresses your needs. Just Cross the Room By Diane Hayden, PhD “Learn to ask for what you want. The worst people can do is not give you what you ask for which is precisely where you were before you asked.” Peter McWilliams

H

ow many times has this happened to you? You see this beautiful woman – on the train, in the bar, at the grocery store – and you think to yourself, “Wow, she is so hot – I wish I had the guts to just walk over there and talk to her.” But what do you do instead? You watch her walk away. Another opportunity lost forever. Here’s what I want to tell you. Man up. I know that sounds harsh – how can I know what it feels like to be you? What if she looks at you like you’re a stalker, what if she ignores you, what if she politely tells you to leave her alone? What if? But what if she smiles at you, what if she engages with you, what if she asks for YOUR number? You’ll never know if you don’t cross the room. I call it “crossing the room” because my boyfriend used to tell me all the time that he would NEVER approach a girl in a bar – or pretty much anywhere. And I would say to him, “you have to cross the room because if you don’t, you miss so many amazing opportunities.” Plus, it builds confidence. Sure – you’ll strike out sometimes – but if you do it enough, you will have major successes. And this will give you the confidence to keep doing it. Why are we so afraid to ask for what we want in life? For most of us, it’s the fear of rejection. We hate to hear the word “no” and we take it so personally. Why do we take it personally? I believe part of the reason is because as children we heard the word no so often it becomes ingrained in our soul as painful and something to be avoided at all costs. But what does it really mean when someone tells us no? As McWilliams states in the aforementioned quote, all it really means is that we’re still in the same place as when we started – not better off, but not worse off either. So that means that we have nothing to lose and everything to gain. 36

Natural Nutmeg - April 2016

Asking for something that we want can sometimes be seen as taking a big risk. In order to be successful, we have to take risks. It truly pains me to think of all the outcomes that could have happened and all of the things I could have had, but I was too afraid to ask. When you start to contemplate this, it will become more painful NOT to ask for what you want, than to take the risk of asking. When should you give up asking for what you want after repeatedly hearing no? Never. Now I don’t mean that you continue to ask the same person out time and time again if they keep saying no. However, I do know many couples who are together today because one of them wouldn’t take no for an answer! I mean that you shouldn’t give up on crossing the room for the next girl even if the last 10 said no to you. Just to give you some perspective on this from the world of sales. A marketing study done at Notre Dame University found the following statistics: • 44% of all salespeople quit trying after the first call • 24% quit after the second call • 14% quit after the third call • 12 % quit after the fourth call This means that 94% of all salespeople quit after the fourth call, but there is another statistic that finds 60% of all sales are made AFTER the fourth call! How many sales were lost because people stopped asking? Most of the time when someone tells you “no”, it has nothing to do with you personally. They could be having a bad day, they could already be in a relationship, or they could be healing from a breakup. None of these reasons is remotely personal, yet we tend to take it that way. Life is short; it’s time to start crossing the room! Dr. Diane Hayden is the owner and publisher of Natural Nutmeg Magazine. BERNIE

By Bernie Siegel, MD

The Craving Cure

T

here are many myths which ask the question, “What does every woman, or man, want?” What do we all crave in this life? The answer the myth ultimately reveals is that we all want a life of our own, where we decide how we live and spend our lives’ time and not a life imposed upon us by the spell caste by a demon or the people in our lives telling us what to do. The sad part is that when we give up our healthy and true desires and cravings because of the desires and cravings of others we lose our lives and at the same time find that our cravings now become self-destructive and depersonalizing and are no longer life enhancing for us or the people in our lives because of what has been taken from us. When our relationship with life becomes unhealthy so does our relationship with food. One cannot separate one’s life from one’s desires. No matter what age this unhealthy change happens at, it leads to unhealthy cravings and addictions. Self-destruction replaces self-esteem and what we seek and crave are any foods that will give us the feelings we no longer can experience due to the absence of healthy and loving relationships. The development of our bodies and its receptors are literally changed by what we have lost. So we seek any artificial means of providing ourselves and our bodies with temporary relief from the losses we have experienced. People whose lives are being destroyed by unhealthy cravings are not stupid. They know what they are doing is not good for them but they do not have the inspiration and determination necessary to be reborn and act as if they were the person they want to be. It is no accident that the term born again comes up so frequently in the lives of those who are awakened by addictions, diseases and disasters and find new meaning in their lives. You must be ready to show up for practice and rehearse being the person whom you have created as your new role model. It is crazy but people take better care of their pets than they do themselves.

Natural Nutmeg - April 2016

To do this you must trust yourself and your feelings and be ready to forgive yourself when you lose your way. You are each a work in progress and can always touch up or redo things if you do not create the work of art you intended. Now is the time to do what makes you happy and not what you think is the right thing to do. Feelings and heart wisdom need to be your guide. It is time to dump the guilt, shame and blame others have imposed upon you and move into faith, hope and love as your motivators. Start saying yes to yourself and no to the people and things you do not want to do. Simply doing something or accumulating material things will not make you a success but it will make you into a human doing. When you find happiness and meaning in your life you become a human being and a true success. It is never too late to re-parent yourself. For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel-or Bernie, as he prefers to becalledneeds no introduction. He has touched many lives all overthe Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our Society grapples with today. Read Bernie’s regular blog posts on his website where you will also find his books, articles, and CDs: http://www.berniesiegelmd.com. Bernie currently holds a cancer support group the second and fourth Tuesday evenings of the month 6:30 to 8:30PM at Coachman’s Square at 21 Bradley Road, Woodbridge. If interested contact Lucille Ranciato: lranciato2@yahoo.com 203 288 2839; or Bernie: bugsyssiegel@sbcglobal.net.You can find Bernie’s books ad CDs at Wisdom of the Ages in Simsbury, Ct. WHY AN ORGANIC MATTRESS IS RIGHT FOR YOU

While we sleep, our immune system recovers and prepares for the day ahead. If your mattress is filled with airborne allergens and chemical toxins, your immune system will battle these rather than

repair itself. Regular bedding & mattresses are laden with polyurethane foam, toxic flame retardants, and water or stain resistant chemicals.

When we found out what was in our mattress, my husband said, ‘Every mother in the world should know what they are putting their child on at night.’ That was 2004, and the Clean Bedroom was born. —Chris Chamberlin, Co-founder
