PUBLISHER'SLETTER Everything is made of energy and energy is all around us and moving through us. Energy from humans comes from highly charged emotions to create electromagnetic wave patterns of energy. These vibrations or energies filter out into the universe and look to attach to something or someone with a similar vibration and eventually bring that outcome back to the original person. If you are thinking negatively, you will attract more negative occurrences (more bills, more ill health, etc) and you will continue to attract this until you change your emotion or vibration. This is why it is so important that we maintain a healthy energy flow throughout our body and mind. In order to maintain energy flow, it helps to have a spiritual practice and engage in energy healings such as Reiki or Shamanic on a regular basis. We are constantly bombarded with negative energies from other people, the media, situations and our own thoughts and emotions. If we do not sustain a good energy flow in the body, we may manifest disease and become ill, we may enter into unhealthy relationships and we certainly will not be able to create the life of our dreams. Reiki is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is the source for life. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.” Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. A Shamanic healing can clear the imprints of karma and disease from the energy field and bring about healing at the blueprint level of your being. Shamans can remove negative energies such as fear, envy, and anger with an extraction and teach you how to change your affinities for toxic people and situations. In addition, they can identify and help you re-write the soul contracts you made and show you how to manifest your vision in the world. These are two of the most common forms of energy healings, however, there are many others that may resonate more with you. Both of these types of healings will help to clear and align your chakras, which are the gateways for the reception and transmission of energy. Take some time to explore different modalities and ask for referrals for energy healing practitioners. Having your own spiritual practice is a must in maintaining a healthy energy flow. Taking time to meditate, go on a silent retreat, or spending time in nature are all ways to restore positive energy to your body. In health and happiness,

THE BUZZ Bicycle Friendly Farmington Hosts Inaugural Ride on New, Multi-Community “Batterson Park Loop”

B

icycle Friendly Farmington, Inc. (BFF), a volunteer organization, recently announced the opening of a bicycle route that encircles Batterson Park on the border of the towns of Farmington and New Britain, CT. The Batterson Park Loop is believed to be one of the first exclusively on-road multi-community bike routes in Connecticut. The route is marked by roadside signage as well as by “sharrows”–shared-lane markings painted on the streets and roads of the loop to increase awareness of the bikeway. Farmington is one of just four communities in the state to currently hold “Bicycle Friendly Community (Bronze)” status from the League of American Bicyclists. New Britain was named a stand-out community by Bike-Walk Connecticut. The loop can be reached from many streets near Batterson Park and A.W. Stanley Park. Starting from the parking lot at the swimming beach on the northwest side of the Park, proceed east on Batterson Park Road following the painted “sharrows.” Continue as the road enters New Britain and turns to the south, becoming Stanley Street. Turn west (right) on Alexander Street and follow to the intersection of Fienemann Road. Turn northwest (right) on Fienemann Road, and then turn north (right) on Batterson Park Road. The entire loop is 3.5 miles in length. For more information, please visit www.bicyclefriendlyfarmington.org.

Pathfinder: A Companion Guide for the Widow/er’s Journey

J

oanne Z. Moore, PT, DHSc., of East Lyme, CT, founded Pathfinder to explore and share the successful practices of widow/ers—artists, politicians, teachers and historical figures—who have learned to live well after loss. In addition to compassionate and honest sharing of experiences among widows and widowers, Pathfinder includes practical advice on managing finances, health, relationships, travel, and home and car maintenance. When Moore was widowed herself in 2009 after 37 years of marriage, she found few resources to help her negotiate the new path her life had taken. She said, “Being widowed is not a stage of life that most of us prepare for very well. When it happens, we need role models and friends to support us as we transition to a new way of living.” Moore is the author of the soon-to-be released book, “Common Sense: Strategies for Living a Joyful and Meaningful Life after Loss.” A noted speaker and workshop facilitator on end-of-life and survivor issues, she is the owner of Shoreline Physical Therapy, LLC, in East Lyme. Sweeter Dreams: 10 Steps to Safe Slumber for Kids By Christine Chamberlin

W

hile children are awake, parents are vigilant about keeping them safe, from holding hands while crossing the street to applying (and reapplying!) sunscreen. But it’s just as important to keep kids safe while they slumber—after all, children can sleep 12 hours or more a night, which means they spend about half their time in the bedroom. As children grow and mature, their lungs, skin and digestive systems are especially prone to the airborne allergens that lurk in most modern bedrooms, like dust mites, pollen, mold, mildew, bacteria, viruses and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Establishing a healthy sleep environment that’s free of hazardous toxins is critical to improve sleep, reduce chemical sensitivities, enhance a child’s overall physical development and keep childhood allergies at bay. Create a chemical-free kid’s room that’s as safe as it is peaceful by following these 10 steps. 1. Rest assured: Unlike conventional mattresses, organic mattresses are crafted using non-toxic and natural materials. Available at various price points, they can be found in sizes that are just right for each stage of childhood: • Baby: like the completely waterproof No-Compromise™ Organic Crib Mattress by naturepedic; • Toddler: like the Toddler Mattress by Pure Rest Organics, with organic cotton and natural wool; • Pre-schooler, grade-schooler and teen: a big-girl or big-boy twin or full bed, like The Grow with Me Sleep System from Suite Sleep’s Little Lamb Organics line, which starts with a latex mattress and grows with two different toppers that add plushness and comfort as needed; and • Young adult: an XL twin mattress topper for the dorm room, like the Classic 1000 Wool Mattress Topper by Naturally Organic, which rests between the fitted sheet and the mattress for extra comfort and protection. Tip: Once old enough to voice an opinion, have a child pick his or her own mattress or topper—their preference (for soft or firm, etc.), may be very different from Mom and Dad’s preferences. 8

Natural Nutmeg - August 2014

2. Talk the (pillow) talk: A standard-size pillow is not made for a child, and could cause neck and back discomfort for the littlest members of the family. Instead, choose a child-size pillow like the Organic Rubber Children’s Pillow by Naturally Organic—it’s chemical-free, comfy and sized for kids. Tip: Look for a kid’s pillow with a removable and machine-washable cover. 3. Wrap up in organic bedding: Organic and all-natural bedding is made from soft, gentle and breathable fibers, with materials raised and processed without chemicals. In addition, organic blankets and pure wool comforters are warm and cozy without the risk of overheating. Tip: According to the Mayo Clinic, bedding should be washed often in hot water. 4. Cuddle up with organic toys: Teddy bears and a menagerie of other stuffed creatures may be clutter to parents, but they are cherished loved ones to kids, spending time in the bedroom and the bed itself, often snuggled in a child’s arms. Minimize exposure to toxins by providing children with cute and cuddly organic toys, like the Under the Nile Veggie Crate. Tip: Look for plush toys that are machine-washable, and launder them in hot water every few weeks. 5. Get green furniture: Available in a range of styles, eco-friendly bedroom furniture—like a bed frame, side tables and dresser—is usually crafted from sustainable, solid wood, without worry of offgassing harmful chemicals. Tip: Whenever possible, purchase furniture made in the U.S., and as local as possible. 6. Remove old carpeting: Carpets are a breeding ground for allergens like dust mites. Replace old carpeting with hypoallergenic cork, ceramic tile or wood flooring that’s not treated with a toxic finish. Tip: Scatter rugs like the Under the Nile Organic Cotton Throw Rug provide that comfy, cozy feeling underfoot, while allowing for easier, machine-washable care.

7. Replace treated draperies or shades: Invest in untreated wood blinds, fabric shades or window treatments made with organic fibers. Tip: Make sure you clean blinds or shades with eco-friendly products, or invest in window treatments that can be easily laundered. 8. Avoid VOCs: It’s easier than ever to find non-VOC paints and products; they won’t off-gas, yet they still provide the desired look. Tip: The only doctor-recommended paint on the market, AFM SafeCoat supplies sustainable, non-polluting paints, stains, wood finishes and sealants. 9. Keep the air clean: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warns that “the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities”. Clean indoor air with an air purifier. Tip: Purifiers that use HEPA filtration, like Baby’s Breath by Austin Air (available in pink or blue!), eliminate 99.97% of all particles three microns in size or larger, making a noticeable and immediate difference. 10. Keep the air fresh: In addition to cleaning indoor air, The National Lung Association and the EPA also recommend recycling the air by opening windows regularly; installing a window guard also stops dirt particles, dust and pollen from entering the bedroom. Tip: An unmade bed allows the bedding to air out and breathe—so consider this permission for a child not to make the bed every day. Christine Chamberlin is co-founder and co-owner of The Clean Bedroom, the country’s premier resource for allergy-free, ecofriendly mattresses, bedding and accessories. Celebrating its 10th anniversary later this year, The Clean Bedroom has sleep showrooms in Portland, ME, Kittery, ME, Greenwich, CT, Wellesley, MA, New York, NY, Santa Monica, CA and Austin, TX, where customers can test-drive (or test-nap!) an organic mattress for every bedroom, from Master and nursery through guest room and dorm room. Online, on the phone and in each showroom, the company’s trained organic mattress specialists help match customers with their ideal mattress, without pressure or marketing hype. BERNIE

By Bernie Siegel, MD

words of wisdom......for Teens

This month Bernie answers 3 common questions that he receives regarding the emotional health of teens:

1. What can teenagers do today to help ensure a healthy future emotionally, physically and spiritually? Studies reveal that when a child grows up feeling loved by their parents we do not have to worry about their future emotionally, physically or spiritually. The opposite of love is indifference and if one seeks attention through self destructive behavior the end result is obvious. What teenagers can do is abandon their past and all the negativity associated with it and use their anger and energy to change their lives and reparent themselves. “When you let love into your prison it changes all the negative items in it (meaning the experiences in your life) and turns them into something meaningful.”

Those are the words of a woman who was abused as a child. Teens can also look for chosen parents who will accept and love them even when their behavior is not liked. These are people who love you no matter what, even when they are critical of your behavior as do most parents and many teachers and religions. So find someone to coach you through life who has had a major loss or illness because they will know what lessons are important for survival. The most important thing for teenagers to realize is that suicide is not ever the treatment of choice. A young man I know, Tony Johnson who wrote “A Rock and A Hard Place”, was planning to commit suicide. Tony was HIV+ due to sexual abuse by his parents and others. I told him we could get a gun and kill his parents instead. He said, “No I never want to be like them”. You were never meant to eliminate yourself. You were meant to love yourself and your neighbors. What you need to eliminate is that which is killing you physically, emotionally and spiritually. You must not give up the life you want for yourself in order to please others. When you do, you lose your life. You must be willing to lose the untrue self and save your authentic life. You are a divine child so get your baby pictures out and live for that awesome child. And like children and animals, when you need attention and love make noise, move and express your feelings. 2. In your opinion, what defines success and how can teens work to achieve success? I have seen many children of millionaires suffering because their parents gave them money, which they were to use in an effort to make more money and be successful. One young man said to me, “My father ruined my life when I was 21. He gave me a million dollars and told me I had to be a success.” What would his father have said if he started a charity with the money? Most parents give their children mottoes to die by and not live by.

10

Natural Nutmeg - August 2014

What is your definition of success. If it is a big estate and lots of money you will never be happy or successful. When speaking to a group of young business owners, all of whom were millionaires I asked, “Is life fair?’ They yelled no louder than any group I have ever spoken to. A young man in therapy for the grief that trying to be a success was causing him said, “When you are a success you are not happy, but when you are happy you are a success”. Decide how you want to serve the world and then go do it. You will be living your life and accomplishing what we are all here to accomplish in our lifetime. And when you enjoy serving in your way, Monday morning will not be a threat to your health and you will never feel like you are working. Because it is only work if there is someplace else you’d rather be. 3. Looking back upon your life thus far, what are some of the major lessons you have learned that you would like to share with today’s teenagers? First, accept the fact that you are mortal and don’t waste your lifetime doing what you do not want to do. Learn to say no to the world and yes to yourself. Next, remember what my parents told me. When a decision was to be made there was only one way to decide: “Do what will make you happy.” When troubles and difficulties occurred, which are inevitable, I heard, “God is redirecting you something good will come of this”. When material things and finances were involved: “Money is to make life easier for people”. Remember, I came from a minority group. I was loved by my parents, did well in school and got along with God. Understand that a perfect world is a magic trick and not creation. What makes our love and actions meaningful is the fact that we have a choice. Life is a school, so live and learn and remember there are no mistakes, just lessons to be learned.

To live happily: Find meaning in your life; Express appropriate anger when you are not treated with respect; Ask for help when you need it—do not deny your needs and feelings; Say no when appropriate; Find time to play; Use your feelings in a positive way to help protect you and redirect your life rather than turning to drugs that numb; Live an authentic life and not a role. Remember we were meant to be human beings and not human doings.

Does My Child Have Food Allergies?

C

onstipation, diarrhea, hives, rashes, eczema, dark circles around the eyes, sneezing, runny nose, coughing and wheezing, ear infections, poor weight gain, irritability, anxiety, fatigue, headaches, crying, hyperactivity, gas, vomiting, and even anaphylaxis. These are all signs that something is definitely wrong. You’ve seen the signs, but how do you figure out the cause of your child’s problems?

Food Allergies Food allergies are generally much easier to understand than sensitivities. True allergies are considered an IgE food reaction and happen shortly after exposure. Allergic reactions occur when the body overreacts to an allergen by creating antibodies to attack the substance. These antibodies are found in the lungs, skin, and mucus membranes (including gut, eyes, nose, and throat). This causes mast cells to release histamines that cause reactions like hives, diarrhea, vomiting, and anaphylaxis. Reactions generally become more severe the more one is exposed to the allergen, and avoidance of the food will be necessary for a lifetime. Often, an Epi pen will be required for children with severe anaphylactic allergies, to prevent full closure of the airway.

Common Allergens The most common food allergens include peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, wheat, soy, dairy, egg, and fish. Even the smallest 12

Natural Nutmeg - August 2014

amount of exposure is enough to cause a reaction. Your pediatrician or an allergist can run a simple blood test to detect IgE antibodies to various foods.

this case, a rotation diet that uses safe foods combined with the least reactive foods in a four-day rotation plan can help lower the IgG response and relieve symptoms.

Food Sensitivities

Celiac Disease

Food sensitivities are much more difficult to diagnose because reactions can occur within 24 hours to seven days after ingestion. This makes pinpointing the culprit or culprits much more challenging. In reaction to a food sensitivity, IgG antibodies are created. When a food that one is sensitive to is eaten, there is an IgG antibody response that combines with the food in the blood stream. Here, macrophages (a type of white blood cell that destroys foreign invaders and dead cells) become overloaded and cause a localized inflammatory response. This process takes time and accounts for the delayed reactivity. Usually, the offending food or foods are those most frequently eaten.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention celiac disease when discussing pediatric food allergies and sensitivities. This is an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks gluten, the protein found in many grains, including wheat, kamut, spelt, rye, bulgar, and oats. Not only is gluten found in grain products, including breads, cereals, crackers, pastas, cakes, and cookies, but it may also be found hidden in sauces, gravies, soups, cheese spreads, dips, dressings, margarines, sweets, canned meats, mustard, and almost all packaged and processed foods. Gluten is often used in food manufacturing because it is a sticky protein that binds ingredients together.

Leaky Gut

Celiac Symptoms

Unfortunately, the inflammatory response can destroy the integrity of the gut allowing larger-than-normal food particles into circulation, creating additional sensitivities. This process is often referred to as leaky gut syndrome. Generally, when the offending food(s) are eliminated, the IgG antibodies will decline and will often fully disappear after six months to a year. For children with large amounts of sensitivities it may be difficult to remove all offending foods. In

While most people consider diarrhea the hallmark sign of Celiac disease, other symptoms include depression, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, growth issues, hives, brain fog, nausea and vomiting, constantly getting sick, dairy intolerance, sugar cravings, and other food reactions.

Destruction of the Small Intestine Since celiac disease is autoimmune and can cause destruction of the small intestine, it is essential to avoid gluten for a lifetime. The good news is that there are plenty of safe, gluten-free grains, including rice, quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth, tapioca, corn, and teff. It has become easier and easier to find gluten-free products at grocery stores, and to find restaurants with gluten-free menus. Diagnosis may be made with a blood test looking for antibodies and is then confirmed by endoscopy to look for damage to the intestine. Once one stops consuming gluten, however, antibody levels will diminish and blood tests will be negative. Similarly, the intestines will heal and lead to a negative endoscopy test.

Gluten Sensitivity and Wheat Allergies Some children may also have gluten sensitivity, which provokes reactions without having antibodies. Gluten restriction will help to prevent further symptoms. Other children may not actually have celiac disease, but may have a wheat allergy that may be confirmed with a blood test for wheat IgE antibodies.

How to Adjust

The first couple of months are generally the most difficult; things get much easier once the transition period is over. Keeping a positive attitude about everything makes a huge difference. The most difficult part of food allergies, sensitivities, intolerances, and celiac disease is the emotional impact on the child and the whole family. It takes time to adjust and realize that the food or foods must be avoided. Allowing the child to pick new ‘safe’ foods to try and making a game out of the process can really help with the adjustment. It is also important to plan ahead to have safe food alternatives for your child for school, birthday parties, family events, and other food-oriented activities. It is hard for children to understand why they cannot eat what the other kids are eating. They may feel left out and hurt. This can be worsened if they experience the same thing at home. So having the whole family avoid the offending foods can be quite helpful for children. Involving the child in both grocery shopping and cooking can help to teach them about their dietary needs. Make the experience positive and not a punishment by allowing them to make some fun choices and to experiment with foods that may interest them.

Dermapen Collagen Induction Therapy

A

n interview with Jan Deschaine of The Pretty Face Place in South Windsor on the exciting new technology for collagen induction. Dermapen is an FDA approved award winning fractional micro-needling device. It uses a disposable needle tip with an automated vibrating stamp-like motion. Benefits include: • Skin tightening, lifting and rejuvenation. • Builds collagen • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles • Improves acne, surgical and other types of scars • Improves stretch marks • Minimizes pore size • Removes implanted pigment

How does the DermaPen work? Dermapen is a state-of-the-art handheld device resembling a pen that uses sterile fine needle cartridges that glide over the skin. Dermapen is safe and effective in repairing wrinkles, crow’s feet, fine lines and various types of scars, including acne scars, in a proven physiological process called Percutaneous Collagen Induction Therapy. Dermapen improves damaged and aging skin by harnessing the mechanisms associated with the body’s natural wound healing response.

What is Percutaneous Collagen Induction Therapy? By creating a controlled invisible micro-pinpoint dermal injury to the skin with the Dermapen, the body responds with a physiological process that improves the skin with virtually no downtime, minimal discomfort and short treatment times. As the Dermapen glides over your skin, it creates temporary microscopic pin-point perforations in the skin. The superficial outer layer is left intact, but is perceived by the body as damage, which stimulates the release of growth factors that trigger the production of collagen and elastin. Your skin reacts to any injury by initiating the wound healing process. Your skin normally assumes that old scars, stretch marks and wrinkles were repaired at the time of injury (but not effectively), but with the Dermapen micro-needling treatments, the skin is tricked into re-repairing itself and it does a much more effective job. The process of skin remodeling can go on for months after each Dermapen treatment. Immediately after an injury occurs our skin dissolves old damaged tissue and replaces it with new. DermaPen allows for controlled induction of the skin’s selfrepair mechanism by creating micro “injuries” in the skin which 14

Natural Nutmeg - August 2014

triggers new collagen synthesis, yet does not pose the risk of permanent scarring. The result is repaired, smoother, firmer and younger looking skin with minimal downtime.

How is the treatment administered? DermaPen procedures are performed in a safe and precise manner with the use of the sterile Dermapen cartridge. The skin is cleansed, sanitized and a topical numbing cream is applied. As the treatment tip glides over the skin creating micro-perforations, treatment serums are applied and find their way through the open channels to the deeper layers of the skin to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment. After the treatment, a soothing mask is applied and pores are closed. A natural tissue repair cream is applied, followed by moisturizer and sun block.

What is the skins appearance after the treatment? After the procedure your skin will be red and flushed in appearance in a similar way to moderate sunburn. You may also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch on the area being treated. This will diminish greatly after a few hours following treatment. Within the next 24-48 hours the skin will be completely healed, but may show some residual pink tones in some areas. After 3-4 days you may notice some mild flaking of the skin. Makeup can be worn after 12 hours post treatment.

How long until I see results from Dermapen? Each person’s healing time, level of treatment and skin problem varies though most start to see results in a few days to a few weeks after treatment. More visible results of skin rejuvenation are generally seen by 6-8 weeks following procedure and continue to improve further over time. The process of skin remodeling and collagen growth can continue for months after treatment!

Is the Dermapen safe? Dermapen is an FDA approved and award winning micro-needling device. It is minimally invasive, involves minimal downtime (24hrs), rapid healing and requires simple after-care.

What are the indications for having a Dermapen treatment? Dermapen treatments are especially effective for aging concerns such as wrinkles, lines, folds, crow’s feet, and skin firmness. Surgical, acne, chicken pox and other types of scars are also treated effectively with noticeable improvement to the epidermis. Small areas of tattoo or permanent makeup removal are also possible.

What are the contraindications of skin needling treatments? Contraindications and precautions include; keloid or raised scarring; history of eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and other chronic conditions; history of actinic (solar) keratosis; history of Herpes Simplex infections; history of diabetes; presence of raised moles, warts or any raised lesions on targeted area. Absolute contraindications include; scleroderma, collagen vascular diseases or cardiac abnormalities; active bacterial or fungal infections; immuno-suppression; scars less than 6 months old; facial fillers in the past 6 months. Patients on anti-coagulation therapy and other blood clotting disorders.

Are there any side effects or risks associated with skin needling?

Since 1956

The procedure is not associated with any discomfort for most. Very effective pre-treatment topical analgesics are applied. The depth of the cartridge can be reduced if any discomfort is experienced.

How many Dermapen treatments will I need? Each person’s skin condition and rate of collagen production varies, and requires different levels of treatment. Those with mild wrinkles and fine lines may see improvement after just one treatment, while more advanced skin conditions like acne scarring may need more than one session. On average 2-3 aggressive Dermapen treatments will provide a noticeable difference. However, 5-6 Dermapen treatments will show the most dramatic results. The number of treatment sessions required will be determined during a consultation. Treatments are spaced at 3-4 week intervals. After results are achieved, it is suggested to maintain collagen stimulation with a maintenance program. Conscious Kids Conscious Money

By Lawrence Ford, AIF

Y

ou taught them how to read and how to ride a bike, but have you taught your children how to manage money? Since they probably don’t have much of it, I suggest the conversation include a strong focus on credit. You know, those offers that come in the mail for your cat, dog, and underage kids–credit card companies are trolling for the next victim. They make a lot of money, and they are hungry for fresh meat.

Money and The Present Moment As I wrote about in my column, ‘The Spiritual Cost of Debt,’ credit debt comes with a high price tag and it doesn’t stop at double-digit interest rates. It can, and will, take you out of the present moment making you fearful of the next due date. Since you are reading this article you are probably pretty in tune with the notion that the present moment is a place we live in when we are awake and in spiritual harmony.

Why Does this Matter? As Deepak Chopra put it, “We are our attention. When our attention is in the past, we are in the past. When our attention is in the future, we are in the future. When our attention is in the present moment, we are in the presence of God… and God is present in us.” How often are you really present? Think about it. Debt is an enemy of the person who strives to be alive and spiritually awake. The good news is the younger generation may be more in tune with this spiritual concept. And they will quickly understand that the real lesson here is about the power of money in our lives and how we can use money to further our health and wealth–or not.

Credit and Debt So one of the first practical steps in teaching your children about money is to let them know debt can be their worst enemy or best friend. A little jig with the devil can raise your credit score…but beware. A healthy credit score is a blessing, but it can become an addiction. Those temptations to take advantage of offers in the mail pushing ‘easy money’ can look extra tasty to the kids. 16

Natural Nutmeg - August 2014

Yes, it is all about balance. Teach them that their first credit card is like a right of passage. Instead of sending them off into the woods to spend a week alone with only a knife in hand, the modern way of initiation into the ‘real world’ can be receiving a piece of plastic in their hands. For young people in our culture, credit cards have become the gateway into adulthood and responsibility. Although they won’t get gobbled up in the woods by a tiger, your kids may feel like that is a lesser fate than finding themselves at the mercy of debt collectors, and unable to buy their first car, or to rent or own their first home. One study of undergraduates found that 60% of college credit card holders experienced surprise when told how high their balance was, while 40% admitted to charging items they knew they couldn’t pay for. For some college kids, it may be too late to avoid learning the hard way. But if you still have children at home, save them (and yourself) from the tiger and some heartache by teaching them the basics of smart money management.

Have the Conversation Many everyday transactions can lead to discussions about money. At the grocery store, talk with your kids about comparing prices and staying within a budget. At the bank, teach them that the automated teller machine doesn’t just give you money for the asking. Show your kids a credit card statement to help them understand how ‘swiping the card’ actually takes money out of your pocket. Fast Fact: Hidden College Cost. College seniors typically graduate with about $4,100 in credit-card debt. (Salliemae.com, 2012.)

Give Kids a Look Find a credit card calculator on the web to give kids a real-life look at what it actually costs to “buy now, pay later.”

Let Them Live it An allowance program, where payments are tied to chores or household responsibilities, can teach children the relationship between work and money. Your program might even include incentives or bonuses for exceptional work. Aside from allowances, you could create a budget for clothing or other items you provide. Let your kids decide how and when to spend the allotted money. This may help them learn to balance wants and needs at a young age, when the stakes are not too high. And yes, I know, it’s one more thing to add to an already crazy schedule; just do your best and know that a little upfront work can prevent hours of rescuing and sleepless nights when they get out on their own.

Teach Kids about Saving, Investing, even Retirement Planning Just as the interest rate of debt on credit cards can gobble you up and put you deeper and deeper into debt and misery, teach your kids that the same principal of compound interest (money increasing in and of itself) can be their best ally. One of the greatest gifts you can give them is to have them start saving NOW for retirement. Discipline and consistency is the key. It is really that simple, but not always easy.

How to Encourage Them to Get Started Offer a match program; say 25 cents for every dollar they put in a savings account. Once they have saved $1,000, consider helping them open a custodial investment account, then teach them to research performance and ratings online. You might even think about opening an individual retirement account (IRA), or better yet (depending on their current circumstances) a Roth account. With the future of Social Security in question, dwindling help from employer-sponsored plans, and the increase in selfemployed work, it is important to let your kids know they have to take care of themselves. Just as the kid in the woods relies on his knife and skill for security, young adults today can’t count on anyone but themselves for retirement. Nonetheless, some parents offer As an Evolved Being, be Conscious of your Actions to fund an IRA for their children as long as they are earning a paycheck. You Don’t Have to Be an Expert to Teach You taught them how to ride a bike, now teach them how to navigate the financial roads that lay ahead. A great spiritual teacher once told me, “you don’t have to be an expert to teach, you only have to be a few steps ahead of your students.” Too many of us think we have to be perfect in order to teach. I have come to embrace this as a teacher and leader in the spiritual and financial realms. If you are too far removed from what your students are going through then it is difficult for you to connect in order to communicate your lessons. Let your kids invest in your losses and gains. Then learn together how to use the power of money to make your world a better place. Emotional Fitness: The Key to Your Happiness

By Jeff Forte, CSIC, CME

L

ast year more than 255 million prescriptions were written for anti-depressants in the U.S. alone. That’s really quite an amazing number. According to the CDC, more than one in five women between the ages of 40 and 59 are taking anti-depressants. At least that keeps the drug industry happy. Every week you can read about the latest celebrity meltdown, divorce or overdose and realize that fame and fortune by themselves do not bring happiness. Happiness is much more than money or achievement, and an unhappy life is a life of suffering.

Emotional Fitness No one’s life is perfect and without challenges. We all have things happen from time to time that will shake us to our core. How effectively we handle them is what I call our emotional fitness. Are you able to handle any adversity or negative emotions that might surface and still be productive in all areas of your life? That is emotional fitness. Our busy, fast paced, plugged-in lives create stress which magnifies the emotion. Feelings of anger, sadness, guilt, depression, overwhelm, anxiety, fear, and self-pity, just to name a few, all seem to get bigger under stress. Most people tend to want to run from their emotions and avoid feeling the negative feelings but in my opinion that will make those feelings persist. Attempting to suppress emotions requires energy that might keep them down for a moment, only to have them surface in a more profound way later on. That’s not effective.

How to Improve your Emotional Fitness Begin to understand your body’s connection to emotions. I look at emotions as being wired into our nervous system, which means that moving your body differently will change your emotional experience. In my private client practice I work to disconnect the emotion from the nervous system. I calibrate the emotional experience on a scale of 1-10. So if the emotion is totally overwhelming it would rate a 10, not really feeling it would be a 1. Measure the intensity of the feeling before 20

Natural Nutmeg - August 2014

you do anything with it, and then measure the intensity after. This will give you evidence whether the feeling shifts or not.

Here are some simple examples: Breathing If you are feeling any negative emotion, you are probably breathing up high in your chest. If you change your breathing into your lower abdomen, around your navel, the emotion will shift. Try it for yourself and see. Think of something that bothers you, and now breathe lower into your abdomen.

Does the Intensity Change? In order to be more effective in your life and feel better, all you have to do is shift the emotions that surface. You don’t have to eliminate them completely. If you can take a level 10 emotion and make it a 6, you will not only feel better, because the emotion is more manageable, you will have more energy to do what you want.

Posture Many negative emotions will cause us to unknowingly shrink ourselves down and compress. If a person is depressed, they have to physically close themselves down in order to feel that way. If you make yourself as large as possible by spreading out your legs and arms, and opening up your chest with your chin up, the feeling will change. Again, it is simply about moving the dial on the emotion so that you can be more effective. Try combining the deep breathing with a widening of your body, taking up more space, and the feeling will shift even more.

Welcoming I like to have conversations with emotions. Notice what you are feeling and say, “Welcome, my friend, thank you for stopping by.”

That alone will frequently change the intensity of the feeling. What works is to embrace the emotion, make friends with the emotion, or at least understand the emotion. Having a sense of curiosity about the emotion gives you an advantage over it. Emotions don’t want to hang out with you if you are curious about them. They tend to leave. My belief is that every emotion is here to serve us in some way so I am curious about them.

Inviting Imagine that you have two chairs, one for you and one for the emotion. Yes this is silly, but it works. Invite the emotion to take a chair next to you and then offer it a cup of tea. This is another example of making friends with the emotion. Be curious about it. In your mind’s eye, what does the emotion do? Will it sit with you or does it flee? If it’s still there, thank the emotion for joining you. Tell the emotion, “I’m here for you anytime you want to stop by. Thank you, I appreciate you.” Simply notice what happens and how you feel. You will feel better because the emotion can’t exist in the same form if you initiate making peace with it instead of fighting it.

Happy and In Control In any moment, we are either operating based on our past or based on the inspiration of something compelling to us. The more you make peace with and embrace your emotions, the more they will shift not only in that moment, but also in the future. Your mind will begin to recognize that you can consciously change the emotion anytime of your choosing, so future events will reduce in intensity as a result. You will be happier and feel like you are in more control of your life. Try it for yourself. People find this to be a pleasant surprise. Doctors Notes

By Peggy Ku, D.O., F.A.C.O.G

Robotic Gynecologic Surgery

R

obotic laparoscopic surgery began in the 1980s and has become widely popular since the mid-2000s. With this important advancement, surgeons can more accurately and safely perform a breadth of operations. Gynecologic surgeons have been in the forefront of utilizing robotic laparoscopic techniques ever since receiving FDA approval for gynecologic surgery. Surgeries range from ovarian cystectomies (removal of ovarian cysts) to complex cancer procedures. With traditional laparoscopic surgery, many operations that once called for a large skin incision (open surgery or laparotomy) now can be minimally invasive, through either a small incision (2 cm) or several tiny incisions (0.5 – 1.5 cm). Robotic laparoscopic surgery has made this approach even better, particularly for gynecologic problems.

Laparoscopic Surgery Laparoscopic surgery is surgery to the abdomen or pelvis through small trocars or ports inserted through the skin. The abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas, which is expelled through the respiratory system and is, importantly, non-flammable. By inflating the abdomen, the surgeon creates a dome or pneumoperitoneum, thereby keeping the abdominal wall off of the internal organs where she is working. Using a camera with a light source, the operative field is illuminated and the image is projected onto a screen. Through the other port(s) a variety of long, thin instruments can be inserted to carry out a range of tasks, such as grasping, cutting, cauterizing and suctioning. The advent of laparoscopic surgery occurred in the early 1900s. By the 1960s and 1970s, gynecologists had become the main surgical specialists using and honing laparoscopic skills. By the 1980s, other surgical specialties were starting to use laparoscopy. In the 1990s there was a boom for laparoscopic surgery and since then a multitude of advances have made laparoscopy a common and often preferred approach for operations.

Advantages of Laparoscopy With every operation, there are risks, benefits and alternatives to be considered. Laparoscopic surgery has several advantages over laparotomy. The smaller incisions minimize post-operative pain and typically make for a far easier recovery, decreasing use of analgesics or pain medications, and reducing lost productivity at home and at work. With laparoscopy there is usually an improved cosmetic outcome. In addition, the use of a fiberoptic camera often gives better two-dimensional visualization of abdominal and pelvic structures than direct visualization, as it is often difficult to directly look into

22

Natural Nutmeg - August 2014

a narrow and deep pelvic field and clearly see all the anatomy. Yet another advantage is that, in many instances, there is decreased blood loss.

Risks of Laparoscopy While techniques have improved since its inception, there are certainly still risks with laparoscopic surgery. Any operation carries inherent risks of bleeding, infection and injury to surrounding organs. Some risks particular to laparoscopic surgery include injury while attempting to access the abdominal cavity (e.g., puncturing blood vessels or organs), physiologic changes incurred with creating a pneumoperitoneum, and difficulties with the laparoscopic approach (e.g., limited tactile sensation, limitations of the laparoscopic instruments, delayed thermal injury, the necessity for specialized operator training, and potentially longer duration of surgery).

Vast Improvements with Robotic Laparoscopic Surgery A vast improvement in laparoscopic surgery has come from incorporating robotic technology. When a robot is used in gynecologic surgery, it is positioned adjacent to the patient and the robotic arms grasp the specialized robotic laparoscopic instruments. While an assistant surgeon is at the bedside, the operating surgeon sits by an ergonomically designed console, having complete control over the movements of the robot. This reduces surgeon fatigue and joint strain during the operation (and certainly over the course of the career of the surgeon). A key advantage of the robotic laparoscopic instruments is that they are mechanically wristed, thereby allowing the surgeon to bend and rotate the tips of the instruments, providing far greater dexterity than traditional laparoscopy. The robotic computer eliminates any potential for hand tremors on the instruments. This has allowed surgeons to perform more and more complex surgeries–ones that in the past would have had to be converted to laparotomy. Finally, the 3D high-definition vision system allows for clearer views of the anatomy than were previously possible.

Disadvantages of Robotic Laparoscopic Surgery Although the introduction of robotics was heralded as a great advancement for laparoscopic surgery, there also are a number of disadvantages. • The operating surgeon is not physically next to the patient.

• While there is a lack of tactile sensation with traditional laparoscopy, there is no tactile feedback when operating the robotic system. (The 3D high-definition vision system, however, provides such incredible views of the anatomy that most surgeons are able to train their visual senses to understand how to apply the correct pressure or force while using the robotic laparoscopic instruments.) • As with laparoscopic surgery, there is a potential for prolonged surgery; placing the robot in the right position, in and of itself, adds time to the total operation. • Steep trendelenberg (when the patient is tilted head down) is usually necessary for robotic surgery, thereby making it more difficult at times for the anesthesia team to aid the patient’s breathing. This is particularly true in obese patients, since excess fatty tissue from the abdominal wall and body then push up against the lungs. • Mechanical breakdown of the equipment or mistaken activation of a control is a real possibility. • Finally, the overall costs of the instruments in the short-term are very expensive. However, when factoring in decreased time spent in the hospital and decreased time spent recovering, that initial high cost evens out in the long-term.

Routine Laparoscopic Surgeries There are several gynecologic surgeries that have been routinely performed laparoscopically over at least the last two decades. This includes, but is not limited to, lysis of adhesions (separating or cutting scar tissue), evaluating for endometriosis (endometrial implants in the pelvis that can often cause pain, scarring and infertility), bilateral tubal ligation (tying the tubes), treating ectopic pregnancies, ovarian cystectomy (removing a cyst from an ovary), oophorectomy (removal of the ovary), salpingectomy (removal of a Fallopian tube), myomectomy (removal of fibroids), hysterectomy (removal of the uterus with or without the cervix), treating pelvic organ prolapse and treating gynecologic cancers. While laparotomy, or in some cases a vaginal approach, is certainly still a viable option for many of these surgeries, the general conversion of these cases to laparoscopy has greatly helped mortality and morbidity in women who need these procedures.

Endometriosis and Ovarian Cystectomy The majority of these surgeries have been improved with robotic laparoscopic surgery. For example, with lysis of adhesions and evaluating–and hopefully treating–endometriosis, careful dissection is typically a key factor for a successful operation. The keen visual-

ization obtained with the 3D high definition vision system, coupled with the increased precision of the specialized robotic laparoscopic instruments, enables the surgeon to do the best job possible for these difficult cases. With traditional laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy, oftentimes the entire ovary is amputated because there is a limitation in the range of motion of these instruments. The fine tuning of the robotic laparoscopic instruments allows for easier handling of a bulky cyst and an increased chance of preserving the ovarian tissue.

Improved Hysterectomies One of the main benefits of robotic laparoscopic surgery is how it has improved the operation of hysterectomy, specifically when there is a lot of scar tissue or when cancer is involved. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hysterectomy is the second most frequently performed surgery on women in the United States (second to cesarean delivery). A main dilemma with traditional laparoscopic hysterectomy occurs after the uterus has been removed from the vagina and the newly created vaginal opening at the top of the vagina needs to be sewn closed. This part of the procedure is very difficult with traditional laparoscopy and often surgeons will close the vaginal opening from the vaginal approach, which has its own pitfalls. With the robot, this step has improved dramatically due to the ease of suturing with the wristed robotic laparoscopic instruments. Surgical procedures involving gynecologic cancers, which traditionally were all performed via laparotomy, are now possible with the robot. Regularly, gynecologic oncologists are called on to operate very close to vital structures and often in heavily scarred or cancer ridden areas. With use of the robot, these patients who once had to endure long and intense operations can now go through their surgery with minimally invasive techniques.

Exponential Gains Robotic laparoscopic surgery, in general, has become a growing trend, allowing moderately hard surgeries to become easier and rigorously hard surgeries to become feasible with a minimally invasive technique. This enhances care for patients. As it applies to gynecologic problems, robotic laparoscopic surgery has exponentially enriched our former techniques. Submitted by Peggy Ku, D.O., F.A.C.O.G. York Harbor Inn

Relax & Rejuvenate at The York Harbor Inn

P

icture this…a cool ocean breeze gently waking you on a summer morning, the smell of homemade muffins wafting into your room, and the cozy down comforter and luxurious king bed you are snuggled in. Sound amazing? Well it certainly is at the York Harbor Inn in York, Maine and some guests have been coming back 17 years for the experience! That’s quite a tribute to this beautiful family of Inns that is comprised of six separate lodges dating back to the early 1600’s. York, Maine has quite an interesting history. York is one of the most historically well-preserved and documented towns in New England. The first European inhabitants came in the very early 17th century. The town of York, the first town incorporated in Maine, and the Old York Historical Society Museum buildings offer a fascinating tour of 18th and 19th Century settlement. In the early 1800’s, a fishing community on the Isles of Shoals, ten miles off the coast, dismantled their homes and brought them to York. It was at this time that the York Harbor Inn’s post and beam fireplaced “Cabin Room” (Circa 1637) was carefully dismantled by its owners and transported by barge to York Harbor from the Isles of Shoals where it had been used as a sail loft for the refitting of ships sails. Today the cozy Cabin Room is the centerpiece of the York Harbor Inn. There is another original fireplace in the new Chapman Cottage that was moved from Doylestown by Henry Chapman Mercer. During the 1940’s, the Colligan family purchased the Inn, which they operated until 1978 - when it was purchased by the current owner/operators - the Dominguez family. The Dominguez’ have continued to build the business, creating a major addition in 1988 and upgrading all of the Inn’s major mechanical and electrical systems, as well as adding a professional kitchen and redecorating and refurbishing each of the Inn’s guestrooms.

Natural Nutmeg - August 2014

The historic building adjacent to the Inn on the west side (circa 1783) is the Yorkshire House, which was purchased in 1983 and became part of the Inn, offering eleven additional guestrooms. In 1997 the Harbor Cliffs, on the east side of the Inn, was purchased and seven new private rooms were added. Each of these exquisitely decorated rooms offers a private bath and most rooms feature stunning ocean vistas. Additionally, several of the guestrooms offer working fireplaces and some rooms even feature spa tubs. Next to the Yorkshire House is the Harbor Hill Inn building with seven oversized rooms exemplifying a Grand New England Cottage architectural style. Each room in this new Inn features ocean views, gas fireplaces, Jacuzzi spa tubs, king beds and many more luxuries. The Harbor Hill building opened during the summer of 2001. The 1730 Harbor Crest Inn was added in 2005 with seven additional oversized rooms. Located on scenic Coastal Rt. 1A approximately one half-mile prior the York Harbor Inn. It is also only about .5 mile from the shops and restaurants of York Village, legendary Wiggly Bridge, Fisherman’s Walk and the Harbor Beach. All seven guest rooms have been revitalized with four-poster king size beds, gas or wood (wax log) fireplaces, wireless and direct internet connections and spacious bathrooms. Six of the seven rooms have two person Jacuzzi spa tubs. There are two premier rooms on third floor with gracious cathedral ceilings. And lastly, where I was lucky enough to stay…The Chapman Cottage and Tavern is the York Harbor Inn’s newest luxury property and opened in August 2012. It is located right next door to our 1730 Harbor Crest Inn and approximately one half mile before the York Harbor Inn. The cottage is the sister house to our Harbor Crest Inn and houses our most luxurious accommodations. The Inn has seven beautifully appointed luxury guest rooms, each with its own unique amenities and character. The three third floor rooms feature large private decks, perfect for enjoying your morning breakfast and the beautiful scenery that surrounds the Inn. Two rooms on the second

floor offer oversize spa bathrooms complete with Jacuzzi tubs for two, separate shower, and gas fireplaces. All rooms have 32 inch LCD TVs, and wireless internet. But what I really enjoyed was the food! Small plates with big flavors are the theme of The Tavern at Chapman Cottage featuring fireside dining and outside dining on an expansive deck. Small plates and tapas is the rage now and I couldn’t be happier as it allows for one to taste numerous things on the menu without having to select one large entrée. We dined on the Tuna Nachos which was a delicious combination of marinated ahi tuna, wakeme, sriracha, wasabi aioli, pickled ginger, sesame seeds, and wonton chips. The Chapman’s Lobster Brioche is a must have considering you’re in lobster country. If seafood isn’t your thing, the Sesame Beef Crostini was amazing with a unique twist including rare beef tenderloin, tomato, avocado, cilantro, mint, sesame seeds, arugula, miso dressing, and sourdough crostini. And in keeping with the farm-to-table trend, try the Cottage Burger with all natural Pineland farms ground beef, candied bacon, port salute cheese, brioche roll, crispy onions and chef’s three bees honey-bourbon barbeque sauce with potato salad. Everything was amazing! They also have some interesting wine tasting dinners throughout the year as well. One of the few properties that remains open year-round, the York Harbor Inn is doing its part in protecting the environment. What I found that really sets the York Harbor Inn apart from other properties was the friendliness and so evident passion of the staff. From the front desk to the wait staff to the general manager, it was clear that these people loved their jobs and the Inn. That’s not something you see too often, but it makes all the difference to the guest staying there. York Harbor has always been one of Maine’s loveliest and least-crowded seaside resorts. Surrounded by oceanfront estates, the harbor escaped the commercialization that altered some of Maine’s better-known resorts. If you’re looking for peace, relaxation and rejuvenation…look no further than the York Harbor Inn. Submitted by Dr. Diane Hindman. The Canary Kids Project: Putting an End to the New Childhood Epidemics

T

hirty years ago, very few people had heard of diagnoses like ADHD or autism. Today, these are household words. These illnesses, and others like them, are just the earliest signs of an epidemic of historic proportions that is affecting our children most acutely. American children are being diagnosed with chronic illnesses (such as autism, asthma, allergies, diabetes, ADHD, autoimmune diseases and many others) at a breathtaking rate, and even more undiagnosed children suffer silently. The social, economic and human costs of this epidemic are staggering. Our children, the ‘canaries in the coal mine’ of national health, are imploring us to take action now. This crisis stems from very specific and insidious environmental factors (beyond just “pollution”) that have been introduced slowly into our lives over the course of the last half-century. Our children are experiencing a “perfect storm” of environmental factors that are destroying their immune systems, affecting their growth and development, and preventing them from living a full life.

Startling Statistics • Rates of autism have risen over the last few decades from 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 50 children. Autism costs the U.S. $126 billion per year. • Asthma affects 1 in 8 children, and as many as 1 in 6 African American children. Asthma costs the U.S. $56 billion per year. • One in 3 American children is either overweight or obese; Obesity-related medical costs account for $190 billion or 21% of medical spending in the United States; childhood obesity carries a price tag of $14 billion a year in direct medical costs. • One in 20 children has a life-threatening food allergy. Food allergies result in over 30,000 visits to the emergency room annually and the total cost of managing allergies in the US is estimated at $14.5 billion per year. • One in 30 children are diagnosed with pediatric depression. The U.S. spends $83 billion a year on depression. • It is estimated that approximately 10% of American children have ADD/ADHD and 17% are labeled as “learning disabled.” ADHD is estimated to cost the US upwards of $100 billion per year. These issues are a human, societal and economic imperative, and it is time to ‘think outside the box’ not only about why our children are sick, but what we can do to help them get better.

What is The Canary Kids Project? The Canary Kids Project is a not-for-profit grassroots, innovative program that tests and documents a results-oriented model that looks upstream at the causes, rather than downstream at the symptoms, of chronic illness. There is a vast body of anecdotal evidence indicating that individuals with chronic conditions, even autism, can fully recover. The Canary Kids Project seeks to test and explore, through proper and rigorous scientific methodology, the underpinnings of these anecdotal successes. The program contains three main pillars: 1. Healing for 14 ‘Canary Kids’ The Canary Kids Project aims to enroll 14 children with one of the following diagnoses into an 18-month long healing and recovery program: autism, ADHD/ADD, mood disorders, atopic disease, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, obesity/type II diabetes, and asthma. The goal is to reverse the disease process and optimize their health and wellness.

The recovery program includes: • Team of integrative experts, including a family health coach and clinical care coordinator • Personalized nutritional support • Comprehensive therapeutic interventions that address genetic, environmental, and epigenetic causes, not symptoms • Green, highest quality, non-toxic, hypo-allergenic products • Personalized, humane, timely and high quality care and monitoring 2. New Paradigm for Healing The Canary Kids Project seeks to model a new way of addressing health by integrating the latest science with time-honored healing traditions. The new model includes: • Collaboration where medical mentors bridge the “bench-tobedside” gap, and translate emerging science to clinicians and physicians • Trans-disciplinary developmental screening • Cutting edge laboratory testing (immune, digestive, endocrine,

genetic, neurological) and other high-tech assessment tools only recently available • Easily accessed, secure, electronic health records to facilitate treatment recommendations as well as scalability of the Canary Kids program 3. Dissemination of Healing and Hope through Education and Media The results of the healing program will be shared on a broad media platform so that others can learn from, and be inspired by, the hope of recovery demonstrated by these children. • Feature-length documentary film demonstrating evidence of hope and improved health outcomes for our “canary kids” • Multi-media grassroots public outreach and support • Global training for parents, health coaches, and medical professionals by Canary Kids medical mentors to translate project’s progress, findings and methodology The ultimate goal of Canary Kids is to help families in their quest to achieve the greatest health potential for their children. A secondary goal of the program is to document and track successes and challenges of children as they recover from chronic illness so that others may benefit from this knowledge. Dr. Martha Herbert, MD, PhD of Harvard Medical School and Dr. Russell Jaffe, MD, PhD of ELISA/ACT Biotechnologies and Health Studies Collegium will serve as “Medical Mentors” to the program participants (clinicians, health coaches and families) and will lead translational science opportunities that emerge out of the project. project may be utilized to create prevention-based models of wellness, with the long-term goal of reducing total disease burden in this country. Each family will be paired with a Clinical Care Coordinator, who will be operating under the guidance and support of a team of Medical Mentors, and a Health Coach to help them navigate their way through the many healing challenges and obstacles.

A People-Powered Project The Canary Kids Project urgently needs your help. Before the 14 children can be enrolled in the program, we need to raise the $5 million necessary to support their healing journey, rigorously document their progress biomedically, and to create a documentary film that shares the message of hope: RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE. Better Food

Better Behavior

By Ayelet Connell-Giammatteo, PhD, PT, IMT,C

W

ould you like to see remarkable improvements in your children’s learning and behavior? Take a look at their diets–at home and at school. A case study at a high school in Appleton, Wisconsin, where a significant number of students were failing academically and disciplinary issues were on the rise, kicked off a national trend to improve school lunch programs. Following a complete overhaul of that school’s lunch program there were remarkable improvements in learning and behavior. What do our children eat at school? Is it healthy? Will it promote good learning and good behavior? As school lunch programs slowly improve, we can combat any remaining insufficiency by providing the best nutrition outside of school. Introducing children to healthy eating at home and setting an example for them by eating well ourselves teaches them to make the best choices for themselves as they grow older and have more independence. How can we encourage healthy eating and healthy living at home? Here are lots of ideas to inspire you and your family.

How to Change Your Kitchen to a Healthy Kitchen Making the choice to live healthy can seem like an enormous task. Tackling one food at a time is a helpful strategy. A good place to start is to create an inventory of what you have in your kitchen that is unhealthy; then replace these products one by one. Almost everything today has a healthy substitute. Some examples:

Organic Produce and Local Farms Buy produce that is organic or natural and free of pesticides and growth hormones. It is true that organic foods are more expensive. Hopefully, one day, this will change. One option is to search for a local Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) co-op farm that sells memberships. These farms provide great natural produce through the warm months of the year and often they provide a 28

Natural Nutmeg - August 2014

winter share as well. One CSA example is Holcomb Farm CSA in Granby. Another example is Urban Oaks Organic Farm in New Britain which offers a summer CSA and a farm stand. A great website that will help you find a CSA in your area is www. ctnofa.org/CSAs.htm. Another wonderful option is to shop at local farmers markets and farm stands. They can be a lot of fun for children and they allow you to buy straight from the farmer. When considering other types of natural foods, there are many ‘regular’ supermarkets that carry some organic produce and sell natural meats without growth hormones or other synthetic additives.

Soda and Candy Eliminate soda pop and candy in the house. It may be challenging to avoid sweets altogether but making a rule of no candy in the house is a great way to start.

Watch Out For Ingredients Choose foods that are free of high fructose corn syrup and other added sweeteners, chemicals, partially hydrogenated oils commonly referred to as “trans fats,” and genetic modification (GMO). Searching for recipes that can be modified to include natural sweeteners is another helpful strategy. Replace sugar and other synthetic sweeteners with natural sweeteners, such as maple syrup, honey, palm sugar, and coconut sugar. Searching for these natural ingredients in packaged foods is a great first step. As for GMO foods, there is growing research that is illustrating the negative effects of genetic modification on us, and on the environment. In fact, GMO foods are outlawed in most European countries. The challenge in this country is that genetic modification is not listed on labels. Some foods that are typically genetically modified in this country include corn and soy. Currently, buying ‘organic’ means non-GMO.

Ultimately, this process comes down to reading labels. As a parent, this process can seem even more challenging because it begs the question, “Do I need to change my own habits?” For a child, the most important factor is family support. Ideally, to support the child optimally, the whole family should adopt these changes.

Recommendations for Natural Health: 1. Gluten Elimination Diet: Gluten is a proinflammatory food which means that it contributes to more inflammation in the body. Inflammation is at the root of every illness, including challenges in learning and behavior. By eliminating gluten from our diet, we support greater health and recovery. For more information on gluten elimination, visit: http://www.gluten.net. 2. Avoid refined sugars: Diabetes is on the rise. To avoid diabetes in adulthood, changes need to be made early on. 3. Avoid peanuts: Consider the recent rise in peanut allergies. Peanuts are allergenic to many people. What is less recognized is how peanuts can affect those who don’t present with severe anaphylactic symptoms. Eliminating peanuts from our diet may lead to benefits in skin health, learning and behavior, breathing, and more.

4. Avoid synthetic additives in our foods: Read labels! 5. Avoid toxic chemical exposure: Always consider how you can reduce toxins in your environment and in your home. 6. Get your daily essential fatty acids: Every tissue in our body is made up of cells. The wall of each cell is comprised of essential fatty acids or EFAs. With any trauma or

infection, at a cellular level, there is a tear in the wall of one or multiple cells that make up a structure such as an organ or vessel. To repair this tissue, the body needs essential fatty acids. But EFAs are not produced in the body–they have to be included in our diet. Unless we eat two tins of sardines every day, we are lacking optimal essential fatty acids! A great way to get the right amount of EFAs is to supplement with fish oils; fish oils house concentrated EFAs. Some options in-

clude daily cod liver oil or fish oil gel caps. A good quality company that can be found at health food markets is Nordic Naturals. 7. Daily probiotics: Probiotics provide healthy bacteria that fight off infection, increase immune strength and ward off illness. Probiotics can be taken by capsule and can also be found in yogurt. 8. Eat vegetables and fruit every day: Vegetables and fruit contain many nutrients and enzymes to support a healthy body. In addition, eating vegetables and fruit every day supports a healthy bowel. Drinking fruit juice is different then eating a whole fruit. When we eat fruit, we digest all of the fruit, including fiber and other important elements that help with digestion. When we drink fruit juice, we are consuming primarily the sugar of the fruit. In recent years, researchers have compared the sugar found in a glass of fruit juice to eating a candy bar!

Sustainable Changes When making the choice to change your kitchen to a healthy kitchen, the question of cost is always a consideration. But what is often forgotten is the cost of illness. The Centers for Disease Control have reported that diabetes is one of the leading chronic illnesses in children today. There is an obvious rise in children’s learning and behavioral disorders–just witness today’s rise in autism spectrum disorder. The only way to make sustainable changes in our health is to be proactive in our choices. So much is out of our control–the escalation of global warming, the rising cost of healthcare and education, and ultimately, other people’s choices. But when it comes to our own family, we can support each other in making better choices that will lead to greater health. Finding the Courage to Sing... Vocal Improv as a Life Skill

E

g n i S n a C u o Y

veryone has their own story. I hear ones about being tone deaf or not being allowed to sing in the chorus. I hear how people hate their own voice, especially on a recording. I see people so terrified to sing in public that they pretend they don’t want to sing at all. The fact is we’re born with the urge to sing. At the same time, we navigate what’s acceptable to others and believe what we’re told. Eventually, we might even stifle the impulse until we overlook it altogether. The author and improvisor, Nina Wise, says that “like a muscle group that is underused and so atrophies, our unexercised voices have lost their strength, flexibility, and range.

Convinced we cannot sing well, we do not sing at all; and not singing at all, we do not develop the ability to sing.” This reminds me of my own suffering around singing. When I was 15, I brought my parents to an open mic at Folk City in NYC so I could perform some of the songs I’d written. I was so excited to be performing even though there were more comics than singers, and their acts included more obscenities than jokes. In the car on my way home, my Dad said my voice was shrill and suggested I sing other people’s songs instead of my own. Now I recognize that he was afraid for the kind of life I would have as a musician performing in clubs. At the time, I

stuck my head out of the window and cried my way home to New Jersey. I might have stopped singing altogether that night had I not been taken by the sound of my own voice echoing back to me in the Holland Tunnel. I’m not sure if I was crying or singing at this point, but I knew I had a voice. I learned that when I give myself over to the sound that’s inside of me, I’m not disappointed. I wake up and wonder what else is in there. Now if you’ve ignored your impulse to sing for a long time, making a sound will require an act of courage. But the good news is that when you open your mouth, courage will find you. You can cross the threshold from “I can’t sing” to “I’m a singer” in an instant.

Here’s something you can try at home: Find a steady tone like the hum of a refrigerator, vacuum cleaner, or from the traffic outside. Match the tone to the best of your ability until you can do so with ease. Now use that tone as a drone and begin to move away from the tone and then move back. Find single notes that create more dissonance and those that create more harmony. Be playful and explore. Next begin to solo over the drone. What does your song sound like? A Middle Eastern ballad? An Irish ditty? Come back to your original tone and find another song inside yourself. Welcome to improvisation! I invite you to look for an early memory of this kind of vocal freedom when you were young. Can you find one? Can you imagine sharing this vocal freedom with others now?

Here are some hints to get you started again: Sing with your whole self. Dance and sing to recorded music with your friends. It’s a great way to share the physicality of singing. Feel your breath deepen as you find your feet and soften your knees. Let go of unnecessary tension in your neck and jaw. As a group, agree to listen and say yes to whatever happens. Support one another by making eye contact, singing in unison, harmonizing, finding a bass part or by creating a groove. Finally, trust yourself. Don’t confuse the broken record of your inner critic with your authentic voice. Be gentle. Finding the courage to sing is not unlike finding the courage to love. All it takes is a little practice. Jumping off the cliff is not required, but keep your eyes open so you can see the view. Natural Treatment of Subclinical GI Infections in Children

E

ven at an early age, children can present with digestive symptoms which may be perplexing to parents and primary care physicians. Functional medicine practitioners frequently see these young patients after they have been through the conventional medical route, often with little success; it’s in our job description to dig a bit deeper to uncover the root causes of these symptoms.

Symptoms Kids may present with an array of symptoms, including pain, cramping, loss of appetite, upper GI distress, constipation or diarrhea, and unexplained weight loss or failure to thrive, which if not diagnosed early can result in further testing, ranging all the way from contrast studies and scopes to exploratory surgeries. While these are sometimes necessary, and do indeed uncover causes of symptoms, there are other avenues of exploration that should be used prior to, or in concert with these more invasive procedures. I’m still amazed at how many of these cases, when proper diagnostic techniques are utilized, are found to be caused by clinical or subclinical bacterial, helminthic, or parasitic infections of the gastrointestinal tract.

Simple Testing and Treatments The diagnostic methods I refer to are simple and non-traumatic to children (who have probably already had their share of being poked and prodded), as they are all performed by stool sample analysis. The tests used in our practice are performed on stool samples obtained at home, on four successive days; they are submitted directly to the laboratory, and results come back in about three to four weeks. At that time we have a detailed follow-up consultation with the family, during which we clearly explain which pathogens (if any) have been found, and how to best treat them.

34

Natural Nutmeg - August 2014

Some of the more commonly found offenders and their treatments are: Bacterial:: Clostridium Difficile Helicobacter Pylori Klebsiella

Respond Well to Botanical/Herbal Treatment Responds Well to Probiotic (S. Boulardii) Sometimes Requires Pharmaceutical Treatment Responds Well to Probiotic (S. Boulardii)

Parasitic:: All Respond Well to Botanical/Herbal Treatment Blastocystis Hominis Endolimax Nana Entamoeba Hartmanii Iodamoeba Butschlii Cryptosporidium Parvum Entamoeba Coli Giardia Lamblia Helminthic (Worms):: Whipworm Hookworm Pinworm

Require Pharmaceutical Treatment

In addition, we often find an overgrowth of yeast (Candida Albicans), which also responds well to Botanical/Herbal therapies and specific dietary changes to deal with food sensitivities and allergies (the most common are gluten, dairy, and soy, which may be addressed by elimination diets). These treatment regimes differ in one major aspect from those used for adults with similar conditions; due to the age of the patient, the hormonal aspect of GI distress is usually neither apparent nor treated, and patients respond just fine. In adults with these types of GI conditions, the adrenal glandular system usually plays a part in the compromised gut, and is therefore treated along with the GI system. In any event, once pathogens are eliminated, the patient is placed on a gut-healing nutritional regime for a short period, to return the GI tract to optimal health.

Uncover the Cause The bottom line is this. If a child is suffering with digestive symptoms which have not responded well to conventional treatment, or has not yet been correctly diagnosed, the functional medicine approach is the way to go. By following this path, you may either uncover the true causes of distress, thereby avoiding more invasive and costly procedures, or, as we have, actually save the patient and family from years of discomfort and stress by getting to the root of the problem. Keep in mind that all patients of this type in our practice are co-managed by their primary care physician, gastroenterologist, or pediatrician. Dr. Eric Kusher is a chiropractic physician since 1983 specializing in Functional Medicine, and the lead practitioner in the Kusher Functional Medicine Center, with offices throughout Connecticut. Tongue Health- Not all Tongue in Cheek

T

he tongue is considered one of the first parts of the digestive tract; it functions in tasting and swallowing food. But it’s more than just an instrument in digestion. Inspection of the tongue can provide clues into deeper health issues that could be going on systemically. Take a moment to investigate the terrain of your tongue. Your health could depend on it!

Enlarged Shiny Tongue Nutrient deficiencies are often to blame for disorders of the tongue. If the tongue is swollen and shiny with a smooth appearance it could be caused by a condition called Glossitis. Glossitis is literally inflammation of the tongue. Vitamin B12 and folic acid are the top two nutrients to consider when glossitis is suspected. Deficiencies can be identified though blood work and corrected through supplementation.

Pale Tongue When the tongue is light pink instead of red, the culprit could be iron deficiency. Iron helps to carry oxygen to various parts of the body, including the tongue. Low iron can reduce oxygen flow to the area and result in paleness. Iron is another nutrient that can be tested though blood work and easily corrected with supplementation.

Cracked or Grooved Tongue Cracks and grooves in the tongue occur in two to five percent of the U.S. population. Often, grooves are noticed in childhood and can be the normal appearance of the tongue. When grooves and cracks develop over time, biotin deficiency can be the culprit. Biotin is a B vitamin that is often used for hair, skin and fingernail health, but it also plays a role in the health of the tongue.

Scalloped Tongue When the edges of the tongue have a wavy appearance, almost as if the tongue is swollen and has indentations from the inner edge of the teeth, this is called a scalloped tongue. Scalloping of the tongue usually is due to inflammation of the tongue, similar to glossitis. B12, folic acid and food intolerances should be investigated.

Geographic Tongue Geographic tongue presents as areas of red, slightly depressed, smooth patches on the tongue surrounded by a distinct white border. The areas of redness can be slightly sensitive and may become aggravated by spicy or citrus foods. Lesions usually resolve on their own and spontaneously reappear. Nutrient deficiencies including zinc have been suspected in the treatment and prevention of geographic tongue. Zinc helps the immune system to heal tissues, and studies indicate that zinc supplementation may be beneficial in healing tongue sores.

White Coated Tongue The most common culprit for a white coating on the tongue, particularly towards the back of the tongue, is an oral yeast infection or thrush. Thrush is common after treatment with an antibiotic, since antibiotics can eradicate beneficial probiotic flora, leaving yeast to proliferate. Yeast infections classically produce white coatings on the tongue, which can be scraped off, but will re-grow. Overuse of antibacterial mouth washes also can be the cause of a white coating on the tongue. As with antibiotics, beneficial bacteria in the mouth can be reduced and yeast can then thrive. Using natural mouth rinses or just water to rinse the mouth is a healthier option. Treatment for oral yeast infections includes antifungal medications. Naturally, using a mouth rise with beneficial oral probiotics can work to regain balance in the oral ecosystem. Reducing dietary sugar also helps to win the battle against yeast as sugar is the main food source for yeast.

Ulcerated Tongue Canker sores are also known as aphthous ulcerations. These painful divots in the tongue can last up to a month and can be reoccurring. In addition to topical treatments that help to numb the pain and discomfort, looking for the cause of these reoccurring painful ulcers can help you eliminate them once and for all. Food intolerances can be one of the main causes for recurring ulcerations of the tongue. Celiac disease (gluten intolerance) can erode tissues of the digestive tract, including the tongue. Testing for celiac disease or other food sensitivities can be helpful in eliminating painful tongue ulcers.

Dark Red, Sensitive Tongue When the tongue is extremely sensitive, especially in specific areas, the cause could be burning tongue syndrome. This condition presents as it sounds, with sore burning areas of the tongue. Pain can become so severe it can interfere with normal eating and drinking and make oral care difficult and painful. The tongue can look red with elevations of taste buds around the area of pain. The exact cause of burning mouth syndrome is often unknown. There are some cases associated with diabetes, hypothyroidism, nutritional deficiencies, irritation from dentures or braces, and medication side effects. Tooth paste containing Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) has been suspected to be a cause of irritation of the tongue. Many individuals are sensitive this detergent, which is used in commercial toothpaste.

Maintaining a Healthy Tongue Tongue health starts with what we put in our mouths. Adhering to a diet that’s low in sugar and carefully avoiding food intolerances are the best ways to prevent irritation to the oral tissues. Using oral care products that are free of harsh irritants, including toothpaste that is SLS-free, helps to further prevent tongue irritation. Over-rinsing the mouth with antibacterial washes can ruin the ecosystem of beneficial probiotics in the mouth and should be avoided. Nutmeg “Nuggets” High Intensity Exercise Needs High Quality Sleep

A

ccording to a study from the University of Chicago Medical School, high quality sleep is critical to peak athletic performance. Tissue repair and recovery—both essential after high intensity exercise—are impaired following continued sleep deprivation, underscoring the need for a good night’s sleep every night. And a good night’s sleep depends on the number of hours you’re in bed, and the bed you’re in. A body is designed to repair itself during sleep, but if a mattress is conventional—made of oil, polyester, and chemicals—it does battle with toxins and airborne vapors instead. Rest assured, there is another option: an organic mattress. Crafted using renewable and natural materials, without unhealthy additions, organic mattresses help ensure high quality sleep night after night. To find the organic bed of your dreams, trust an authentically all-natural source like The Clean Bedroom. Celebrating its 10th anniversary later this year, The Clean Bedroom’s trained organic mattress specialists are available online, on the phone, and in their sleep showrooms in Portland, ME, Kittery, ME, Wellesley, MA, Greenwich, CT, Austin, TX, and Santa Monica, CA. Art Therapy for Stress Relief

O

ne of the reasons that art therapy is effective is that the act of drawing and creating art can help you relieve stress in several ways. Here are some ways that creating art can alleviate stress: • Diversion: Drawing and art can take your mind off of what’s stressing you, at least for a few minutes. When you’re finished being engrossed in your sketches, you should have a clearer head with which to tackle your problems again. • Meditation: There’s a certain quality of being called “flow”, that experts say is very beneficial for us. This refers to a state of being completely engaged in something to the point of being in a near meditative state. It carries many of the benefits of meditation, leaving you much less stressed when you’re done. • Self-Care: Just the act of having a hobby can make you feel more balanced in your lifestyle. Sometimes with all of life’s responsibilities, we forget that we need and deserve ‘down time’ and self-care. Taking even a few minutes on a regular basis to devote to a hobby can give you more of what you need in this area. And, with drawing, you have the additional benefit of being left with something beautiful (or at least interesting) to show for it. Submitted by Elisabeth Moss BFA, LMT. Transitioning from Summer into Autumn Using Chinese Medicine

by Laura Mignosa, CHHC

A

ncient Chinese medicinal texts have established the use of foods and herbs to help us through season changes. They provide helpful ways to nourish ourselves during these times of Qi instability, when we need extra care to protect ourselves. This 5000-year-old healing tradition provides a guideline for supporting our bodies from one season to the next and is called Superior Healing. Chinese Herbal Therapy is often used to balance disharmonies that may be either constitutional or brought on by misunderstanding of diets and pathogens, but the true spirit of this medicine is to prevent us from being out of balance with the world around us.

Wei-Qi, which is the defensive Qi of our body, protects us from the outside invasion of flu and colds, as well as pollen, dust, allergens, or anything that disrupts the flow of energy. The Wei-Qi circulates on the surface between the skin and muscles and works to warm the body. If the Wei-Qi is weak, the skin and muscles will not be warmed properly, and body aches due to contraction from cold are more prominent. Catching more than five colds in a year points to a deficiency in the energetic Lung organ and we need to boost our lung Qi.

Preparing for Autumn

A very effective and well documented herb to help keep the body’s defense Qi at its peak is Astragalus (Huang Qi). The name alone tells a story in the Chinese Language. Huang means Yellow and Qi is Life! The more yellow these tongue depressor roots look, the more potent the strength and we use this Superior herb ONLY when we are well, especially as we enter Fall. It is a misconception that using this herb when we start to feel sick will increase our immune system. It is actually the opposite. There are many Chinese Herbal formulas like Gan Mao Ling to release the pathogens of viruses & colds from our bodies or the use of a Western herb Echinacea found in most health food stores can disperse pathogens as well. Just remember Astragalus and Echinacea are not interchangeable. I believe change is good and living in New England means we get the benefit and the responsibility of protecting our bodies from pathogens in each of the four seasons. This is an important part of staying well and enjoying a wonderful, full and productive life. If in doubt you may seek out the services of good Herbalists to help you.

Traditionally, autumn is the harvest season and our bodies also begin to harvest and gather energy for the colder months ahead. In autumn, the heat of summer gives in to the growing yin energy of the approaching winter, when there is less activity, but more emphasis on substance, nurturing, and supporting and building our organs, fluids and blood. After summer, autumn is a time to clear excess heat from the body; then, as temperatures drop, it is time to start warming the body against extremes. While this may seem contradictory, know that summer heat saps strength, while internal warmth supports the strength of our organs. Fall also is a time of organizing our life for the winter season ahead, and is associated with the emotion of letting go. This process is difficult for those who love the summer. They find it hard to give up the long days of sunlight, warm temperatures, and open windows, while others revel in the crisp air and crunching leaves. Our constitution determines which season we love or hate.

Protect Your Lungs The Lung is considered by Oriental medicine to be the tender organ, because it is the uppermost organ in the body and is especially susceptible to wind and cold. During the change in temperature, we need be aware of this and dress for the weather! People who still dress for summer at the beginning of autumn provide an open invitation for coughs, sore throats, and the common cold. 40

The Vitals of Juicing

T

oday, more people are becoming aware of the importance of a healthier diet and overall better nutrition. GMO’s, hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, mad cow, it’s enough to make you open your eyes before opening your mouth. Proper nutrition, dietary habits and choices play a significant role in the quality of life, health and longevity. More stores now carrying so called “organics” or “all natural” as food companies are competing to gain more shelf space than ever before. It is important however, to truly understand what these terms really mean and if the labeling accurately depicts the true nature of the ingredients. Infomercials are now filled with blenders, juicers, yogurt and natural ice cream makers; some saying it’s the latest trend.

So Why Juice? Fruits are low in calories and fat and are a source of simple sugars, fiber, and vitamins, which are essential for optimizing our health. Fruits contain many antioxidants such as poly-phenolic flavonoids, vitamin-C, and anthocyanins. These compounds help keep the human body protected from oxidant stress, disease, and cancer, and help the body develop capacity to fight against these ailments by boosting our immunity level. The health benefiting properties of fruit are their richness in vitamins, minerals, micro-nutrients, and antioxidants, which help the body prevent or at least prolong the natural changes of aging by protecting and rejuvenating cells, tissues and organs. Vegetables, like fruits, are low in fat but contain good amounts of vitamins and minerals. All the green-yellow-orange vegetables are rich sources of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, beta-carotene, vitamin B-complex, vitamin-C, vitamin A, and vitamin K. Examples of certain antioxidants in fruits and vegetables: • Carotenes in mangoes, carrots, spinach, oregano • Lycopene in tomatoes, grapefruit, watermelons • Resveratrol in grapes, berries, peanuts • Anthocyanins in chokeberry, broccoli, kale • Antioxidant vitamins like vitamin A, E and C in large number of herbs, vegetables, and fruits

One example of the medicinal value is the red beet. The root is a rich source of the phytochemical compound, glycine betaine. Betaine has the property of lowering homocysteine levels within the blood. Homocysteine, a highly toxic metabolite, promotes platelet clot as well as atherosclerotic-plaque formation, which can be harmful to blood vessels. High levels of homocysteine in the blood result in the development of coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and peripheral vascular diseases. Modern food industry uses many preservatives, artificial colorants, additives, and chemicals in order to enhance the appearance, flavor, and shelf-life of food we eat. However, these compounds ultimately end up accumulating in our body, only to show their deleterious effects in the form of diseases, cancers, and genetic malformations in newborns. It is imperative to each of us to understand the nutritional requirements of our body. All of us are curious about finding out what is a well-balanced diet in order to stay healthy and to enjoy productive life. A certain level of knowledge about food science is necessary regarding food items’ nutritional value, their antioxidant strength, storage quality, processing methods and consumption. Every effort should be made to have all the nutrients in the right quantities, proportion, and free from harmful germs and chemicals. Squeeze Me Smoothie and Juice Bar is now open as an expansion at the wellness center at Nova Spa in Rocky Hill. Understanding the need for good diet, the benefits of juicing and how it affects the skin was the vision for the spa’s juice bar concept. The menu is freshly squeezed organic vegetables, nuts, seeds and proteins full of vitamins blended to quench anyone’s thirst or appetite, and refreshingly delightful Organic Fruit Smoothies. Also Express Soups, Garden Salads and Wraps, for the healthy fast food lunch. The fruits and vegetables are certified organic and grown locally when available. The Squeeze Me Smoothie and Juice bar is open 7 days a week, 11 am until 9 pm squeezing and blending for your health. Stop in for a visit! 1845 Silas Deane Highway, Rocky Hill, 860-919-3860.
