PUBLISHER'SLETTER

T

his month our feature topic is Spirituality and we asked “The Question – What is your spirit animal?” My spirit animal is the Great Blue Heron! Two times in my life, the heron has landed less than 10 feet from me and looked me right in the eye. The day I realized this majestic bird was my spirit animal, I was out running in the woods and the heron flew right in front of me at arms-length. When I returned home from the run, my mother called to tell me my father had died. The heron is fiercely independent - something many people tell me I am. Whenever I am struggling with a decision I’ve made, many times I’ll look up and see him flying above me – then I know I made the right choice. The most amazing characteristic about the heron is its environmental presence. The heron is at home in three elements: Water, Earth and Air. People with the heron as their totem are either very skilled in a multitude of elements, or they are branching out in various skills, and the heron is offering confidence in the process. The heron deals with being comfortable in spaces that are neither here, nor there, the ‘in-between’ which represents a space suspended - without time or place. It prefers hunting at twilight, which is a symbolic and magical time of ‘in-between’. The heron will have one foot on land, and one foot in the water - this action has been recognized by ancient cultures as an ability to cross into a space that is neither here, nor there. It’s not just this that establishes the heron as a present-moment icon. It’s the heron’s way of hunting that also illustrates how graceful the heron exists in the Now. How many of us can exert the kind of patience the heron does in waiting, watching, being ready for our reward? How many of us are prepared to take immediate action and strike in the instant our opportunity swims by? I don’t know how many of us can do these things (I sure struggle in these areas), but I do know the heron can help us achieve this kind of intense tranquility. The heron is almost exclusively a solitary creature. It prefers seclusion, privacy, and even favors hunting alone rather than with a group or mate. The only time the heron breaks its vow of sequester is during mating season. If the heron is your totem or guide, you can completely relate to this. Heron people prefer complete isolation... but are equally at ease in a crowd of peers. To be sure, it’s a regal bird with limitless capacity for extolling profound wisdom to those of us who are inclined to receive it. In Health and Happiness,

What’s your

spirit animal?

Alicia Blair Diane Hayden

A giraffe because I find them fascinating, graceful, vulnerable and strong.

Lynda Adams Erica Morawski

I’ve always felt that the turtle was my spirit animal. As an introvert myself, I admire (and even at times envy) the turtle’s sturdy, protective shell. The turtle never hurries, and seemingly, never worries. Turtles spend hot, summer days lazily gliding about a local pond or lounging somewhere in the shade. The turtle is my spirt animal of choice because I’m a true believer in the classic turtle mantra: slow and steady wins the race.

I have always thought of myself as being most like a lion because they are associated with courage. I have taken many risks that required courage and I always saw those as opportunities to grow. I am exactly where I am supposed to be in my life because of taking those risks and can honestly say that courage has allowed me to live the life I was meant to live!

One early morning when I was driving down the Merrit Parkway I started onto the South Norwalk exit and was stunned to see a barred owl perched on a post! I instantly recognized it as my spirit animal. Owls are connected to wisdom (they are associated with the goddess Athena, also my favorite!) and to impending changes. It was a sign that I could be successful forging my own path in life and see clearly to make the right decisions.

My spirit animal is the Great Blue Heron! Two times in my life, the heron has landed less than 10 ft from me and looked me right in the eye. One day I was out running and the heron flew right in front of me at arms-length. When I returned home from the run, my mother called to tell me my father had died. The heron is fiercely independent - something many people tell me I am. Whenever I am struggling with a decision I’ve made, many times I’ll look up and see him flying above me – then I know I made the right choice.

A duck. Sounds a little odd, but If I could pick an activity to do all day, floating in the water seems pretty nice. Ducks never seem to be in a hurry, and they never venture too far from their families, or their claimed pond. As a homebody myself, I can definitely relate to the duck.

I have always identified with the Cheetah – a cat without retractable claws, much like a dog. They are beautifully lean and elegant. Purposefully built for speed – it’s the fastest land animal with small head, special pads on its feet for traction and a tail almost 3 ft. long for balance and maneuverability. One of Mother Nature’s finest creatures!

NEXT QUESTION: What’s one dream you’ve seen fulfilled? Tell us on our Instagram, @naturalnutmegmagazine, or on our Natural Nutmeg Magazine Facebook page the animal you identify with the most along with why that furry (or scaly) friend makes your heart flutter. Make sure to tag us and use the #NNthequestion for a chance to be featured in the August issue of Natural Nutmeg Mag! Comments can also be emailed to diane@naturalnutmeg.com www.NaturalNutmeg.com

Yellowbrick.me Launches an Online Educational Community for Parents

Y

ellowbrick.me announces www.yellowbrick.me, a website devoted to creating an online educational community for parents. After several years of research between 2011 and 2015, John Christensen, PhD and Matt Connell, EED, MBA discovered that a large gap exists between the educational resources parents are seeking online and the information they are actually able to access. Dr. Christensen and Dr. Connell founded Yellowbrick to fill this gap and to manifest a vision of a global community in which all have access to educational resources that provide solutions needed to improve themselves, their families, and their communities. At Yellowbrick’s core is the concept of crowdsourced knowledge and building a world-wide social network driven by a robust Internet portal. The goal is to create and brand a safe place for a large number of users to share their stories with each other, to learn from experts, and to develop and grow as individuals through the crowdsourced educational media resources provided by Yellowbrick. This includes online courses, app-based parenting interventions, text-based/published curriculum, and sponsored community-based lectures. Current features include an open forum for parents to communicate with one another, an expert corner for parents to connect with expert information as well as an affiliate page for users to find experts and non-profits. In the immediate future Yellowbrick will be launching online parenting courses as well as developing mobile apps to help parents with specific situations. By joining the community you get to add your voice and your knowledge and help others along the way. Submitted by Matthew A. Connell, EdD, MBA of Strategic Improvement Associates 860-269-6544 *102

he summer is all about balance… For many of us, our work schedule doesn’t really change but for those of us with kids, there’s much more planning and organizing that is involved with pulling off a seamless summer season. Our mornings seem to still be busy! To maintain a healthy body during the summer months, it’s helpful to remember to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Maximizing the Harvest in the Here and Now By Julie Wern

W

hether you are a CSA member, grow your own garden, or shop at farmer’s markets, maximizing the summer harvest is an important objective. Much is written about ways of preserving surplus produce such as canning, fermentation, dehydration, and freezing. I thought I would take a different approach and discuss ways to expand your use of the summer bounty at its freshest—here and now. Eat Vegetables for Breakfast The paradigm of the American breakfast has long been refined carbohydrates, sugar, and meat (bacon, eggs). Note the distinct lack of vegetables. Try a salad topped with a fried egg or toast smothered with sautéed bitter greens and egg. Make extra grilled veggies and serve a veggie hash with eggs at your brunch table. Or completely break out of the box and try fresh gazpacho or a Caprese salad as your morning eye-opener. There are no breakfast police, so let down your guard and get creative with breakfast foods.

Get Creative Nothing jams my flow like food boredom. It is so easy to get in food ruts, and when we eat the same thing day in and day out our bodies naturally crave something different. That is when I find the zucchini rotting on the counter because I just can’t stomach (literally) another stuffed zucchini. Changing up textures or using different cooking methods can alter the flavor and “feel” of food so much that it can seem like a different item altogether. Here are some of my creative go-to’s:

• Make “chips” or fries. Using a mandolin, thinly slice your vegetables, toss with oil and spices, and bake at 350 or 400 until lightly browned and/or crisp. This works well for beets, sweet potatoes, zucchini, Brussels sprouts, and parsnips. Alternatively, make baked fries (I especially love rutabaga, kohlrabi, parsnip and zucchini fries) • Experiment with the grill—Cucumbers, watermelon slices, salad greens, radicchio, kale, okra, green beans and cabbage, while not typically thought of as grill items, are all terrific on the grill. You might be sick of your garden- variety salad, but have you tried a grilled Caesar salad? Add More Vegetables to Your Recipes • Spiralize—New gadgets called spiralizers cut long, noodle-like pieces Most recipes cater to the standard American diet, which is from zucchini, summer squash, cucumber, potato, sweet potato, large high protein and carbohydrates, and low in vegetables. Even cascarrots, or turnips. Left raw or lightly sautéed, these “noodles” can serole recipes that contain veggies actually include very few vegtake the place of pasta or add special interest to a dish. My husband etables (and a narrow variety to boot). I recently cooked a curry loves spiralized zucchini tossed with marinara and spaghetti. The zucstir-fry followed loosely from a typical recipe that included about chini gives the dish a unique crunch and sweetness, yet it doesn’t taste 20% percent vegetables and 80% chicken. I used five times the like zucchini. amount of vegetables and added a quarter of the amount of chick- • “Rice” it—Paleo and raw enthusiasts have embraced a wonderful techen. The result was a veggie-centric, wholly delicious dish that nique for “ricing” vegetables, which is used as a substitute for grains in completely cleaned out my fridge of produce. This works even dishes. Simply put, items like cauliflower, root vegetables, zucchini, for dishes you wouldn’t normally think to add veggies to, like taco summer squash, and winter squash are pulsed in a food processor until meat sautéed with grated zucchini, Bolognese sauce made with they resemble rice. The riced veggies are then either lightly cooked or finely diced carrot, turnip, and zucchini, or macaroni and cheese left raw and used in anything from “fried rice” to “grain salads”. One brimming with broccoli. of my favorite riced meals is “tabouli” made with raw riced cauliflower

combined with parsley, tomato, cucumber, fresh squeezed lemon juice, and olive oil. The dish doesn’t taste like cauliflower and yet is surprisingly similar to tabouli made with bulgur. • Make smoothies, juices, and other beverages—Juicers, which are increasingly affordable, offer another excellent way to use up large amounts of vegetables all at once. Fresh vegetable juices can be consumed as is, or used in salad dressings, marinades, cold soups, or as a base for other beverages (even cocktails like cucumber gimlets). I use my plethora of homegrown mint and cucumber each season by keeping a pitcher of infused cucumber-mint water in the fridge at all times. • Make pesto—There are hundreds of possible pestos made from herbs; kale, arugula or other greens; carrot tops; roasted peppers; beets; broccoli or broccoli stems; carrots; zucchini; and fresh peas. Pesto is fantastic mixed with pasta (or spiralized “noodles”), made into a dip, served as a condiment for meats, stirred into soup/ stews, made into vinaigrettes, mixed with grains or “rices”, stirred into fillings or stuffings, or incorporated into crostini appetizers.

• Add veggies to baked goods—Pureed or shredded veggies add moisture, interest, texture, and nutrition to baked goods like muffins and breads. Substitute parsnips for carrots in carrot cake or try pureed beets in brownies!

All Your Questions about Spirituality, Energy and Health Answered!

I

am grateful for the opportunity to help people experience the world I feel we are moving through and stepping into. This column is question and answer format to provide those interested, a chance to ask questions about spiritually, energetics, health and life and how it can all come together in a grounded, functional and applicable way, so the reader can navigate life with peace, joy and compassion in a world that is changing so fast. Every month I welcome you to submit your mind, body, spirit questions directly to me at questions.rondamico@gmail.com or through my website at www.rondamico.net. Q: Over the past few years it has been getting more and more difficult to stay grounded and present in stressful situations. I’ve tried many methods of centering and grounding with some success, but I seem to continue to come back to the same struggle, not feeling at peace, difficulty staying and coming back to my center. How do I stay grounded and centered in life situations? A: I have asked this question many times myself and it has been asked of me many times. The simplest way to address this is to begin by looking at one simple truth, and that is, we must clear the mind to center in the Soul. Often we will attempt to THINK our way into our center, but the truth is that we can only FEEL our way to the Soul. The way to do this is to shift our focus from the head to the Heart and feel the energy as it begins to move or stir in the chest cavity. For some of us the process of shifting from the head to the heart is very difficult. This is often difficult because we are attempting to make this change through the human mind. You can’t heal an imbalance from the place it was created. I feel the reason this can be so difficult is because we are attempting this change alone, we are often moving into this significant change for ourself and by ourself. What I feel we are missing within this personal and spiritual journey of life is welcoming the essence of that which creates and sustains us - the essence of God/Source/Creator/Divine. These are just some of the titles people use as a representation of their connection with that which gives us life and often is not seen through human eyes. Throughout the remainder of this article I will use the term Creator. I have found it’s important to have something to focus on and align with that is not of this world but what created this world. Part of why people are so challenged to stay present in this world is because the focus of the world has changed from a Creator/Soul center to mind/prove it to me/competition/achievement orientation. This change has created deep weaknesses and insecurities in everyone, even those who think they are secure and safe. Therefore, the process of centering and healing deep imbalances must come from 14

our origins, the Creator. When we begin to align with the Infinite Light, Love and Truth we begin to feel fulfilled and our life begins to change. This process of centering is quite simple but like any change, practice and experience, brings forth embodiment within all aspects of our being - Mind, Body, Spirit/Soul. This centering experience has five steps and begins as follows: Begin with the acknowledgement that you are not in your center and focus on your breath as a centering tool. Feel the breath as more than just an exchange of gases. Feel it as the Life Force of the Creator being breathed into you through your Soul. When we breathe the body and mind begin to naturally calm, partly because we change its chaotic activity as a result of stress or trauma, but more because we begin to settle into the present moment and the present moment is the home of the Soul. When the Soul is honored and centered into the body will begin to follow. If the stress or trauma is significant it may take longer to center but it will follow. Please realize, the mind and our mental thoughts are what created the stresses and pains we are experiencing. Therefore, the mind will not be able to get us out of this, because at this point the mind is under the control of the ego, and the ego will not let us truly be free. The very voice that is speaking the loudest wanting change is the very thing that will not let go easily. The voice to truly listen for is the most calm, quiet and peace filled voice you are searching for in this activity. It is the Voice or the Creator within. It is the sound of your Soul. The way to ‘hear’ this voice is through the quiet within that is FELT, and as it is felt you will actually begin to HEAR the feeling of your Soul. You will begin to sense its presence. THIS is the ideal to open to. 1. Acknowledge you have stepped out of alignment with your Soul and communion with the Creator - “Mother Father Creator, I find myself stressed and in fear, when I (name the event briefly) I moved away from myself and You. I now choose to be with my Soul and You once again.” 2. Next, create a hand position or mudra that is a physical expression of your recommitment to aligning with the Creator. For example, fingertips of both hands touching in front of you; both or one hand over your heart or heart center on your chest; hands open, with palms up, arms slightly bent at the elbows - in a receiving manor; or any other fashion that feels right to you. Follow this with your version of the following: “Mother Father Creator, here I Am. I receive Your breath into my Soul. I surrender the will of the ego to allow You to breathe me. With this acknowledge-

ment I allow Your Light, Love and Truth to become mine. I honor the Grace, Love and Beauty that is You to flow within and through me.” Continue breathing until you begin to FEEL your body and Being, to settle and soften into a more Peace filled state. 3. Now, step into the will to release and heal. “Mother Father Creator, in this moment I do not feel I can release and heal this/ these past wound(s) on my own. I open myself to your Divine Love to receive all I require to release, clear and heal all past issues and current struggles. I take Your Love into my entire being, Mind, Body and Spirit. I receive You to overflow from my Soul to the physical, ALL that I AM.” Continue breathing and focus until you begin to feel the movement and ease move throughout your whole being. 4. Continue with filling yourself with what you feel you may be missing, lacking or desiring to be filled with. “Mother, Father Creator, please fill me with Your Love, Peace, Self-worth, Courage (whatever you feel you require to stay centered within your Soul) that I may sustain my Soul’s alignment with You.” Continue breathing and focus until you FEEL yourself filling with what you requested to receive. It is necessary for you to FEEL the quality of each item you wish to receive. This is not a THOUGHT process, it is a FELT process. Even though you may not know how it feels, ask “Mother Father Creator please help me feel the Truth of the quality of COURAGE.” With continual practice and a sincere desire to have a Soul Felt relationship with these Graces, it will begin to become clear and palpable. 5. Finally, NOW it is time to step into the Soul’s Will to become a deeper and richer embodiment of Your Soul’s Communion with Creator and the all that is Life. “Mother Father Creator, I now commit with All That I Am - Mind, Body and Spirit - to live the Truth of Your Light, Love and Truth in all that I Am and all that I bring into this world. With all that You have Blessed me with I thank You for Your Love and Light.” With continual practice and a sincere will to live life from the Soul in communion with the Creator you will begin to feel your life change. The ideal would be to practice this process at least 2 times per day, the full activity. Then throughout the day focus on the breath, each and every breath, as the recommitment to the choice to be with Creator through your Soul in all that you are and do in life. Treating Our Emotional Well-Being By Tonya Pasternak, ND

V

itamin and mineral deficiencies are often the root cause for symptoms such as anxiety, depression, irritability, PMS, and even pain. While such deficiencies are very common, they are often overlooked and thus undertreated. In these situations, people are frequently put on medications such as antidepressants or birth control with suboptimal results. This is an unfortunate situation because it is simple to screen for nutrient status and correcting imbalances can have drastic results. Magnesium, iron, vitamin D, and Vitamin B12 are all equally important contributors to our emotional wellbeing and are good starting points for assessing levels. Magnesium Magnesium is one of the most common deficiencies in the United States. One reason for this is because our soil tends to be depleted of such natural substances, making our food less rich in this mineral. Magnesium is needed so that our physical body can relax. When our levels are low we can get symptoms such as muscle tension, cramping, high blood pressure, and headaches. This physical tension often manifests inwards and commonly contributes to anxiety and restless sleep. Magnesium supplementation can help with all of these manifestations and is sometimes the only thing needed to restore balance within the body. It is important to make sure you are taking the correct dose and form in order to get the desired effects and to avoid digestive side effects. Vitamin B12 Vitamin B12 is necessary for a magnitude of functions and its importance cannot be underestimated when it comes to our emotional and physical wellbeing. We get the majority of B12 from eating meat, fish, eggs, and dairy, therefore people who eat little or no animal products have a propensity towards being deficient. Early signs of 16

Natural Nutmeg - August 2016

inadequate levels include fatigue, anxiety, and depression. If the progression worsens people can develop cognitive and neurological symptoms such as confusion, dizziness, numbness and tingling. B12 is also needed for red blood cell production therefore deficiencies can lead to anemia. Treatment for correction depends on the level of severity and either includes dietary modifications, supplementation, or injections.

time tolerating iron supplements, however taking small amounts, eating it with meals, and making sure you have the correct form are all things that can help tolerate it more easily. As with the other nutrients, replenishing your stores will make a huge difference in the way you feel. With that said, iron can be toxic if levels get too high, so do not supplement with this unless being monitored by a physician.

Vitamin D Vitamin D is probably the most familiar deficiency, especially if you live in New England. While we get small amounts from consuming fish or eggs, we get the vast majority from sunlight. Therefore, if not supplementing throughout the winter months, a person is bound to have low levels. Vitamin D is necessary for energy, mood stability, the immune system, and bone health. As many people know, low vitamin D is a very common cause of depression and a huge contributor to seasonal affective disorder. Additionally, decreased stores contribute to chronic pain, particularly chronic low back pain. While it may seem too simple of a cause for major health disturbances, its importance cannot be overstated.

Many of us suffer from issues with our well-being whether it is symptoms on the emotional or physical level. When people go to their physicians for these problems the answer is often medication. This is usually the suggestion regardless of any workup, especially workup for nutrient deficiencies. While magnesium, B12, Vitamin D, and iron are common elements to be low, these are only a few. Not only is it important to see if your levels are low, but it is equally important for your physician to determine the reason. This information will help to treat the underlying cause and prevent further complications.

Iron Iron may be one of the most frequently overlooked nutrients. Many people are told their levels are normal based off of a CBC, or complete blood count. A CBC assesses the body’s red blood cells to see if there are any abnormalities suggestive of a deficiency. Because iron is needed to produce red blood cells, normal CBC results often lead to people being told their levels are normal. However, what isn’t looked at as often are specific markers of iron status such as total levels or ferritin. These numbers are commonly low despite normal CBC results. If we do not have enough of this mineral it can contribute to fatigue, depression, anxiety and even hair loss. Many people have a hard

The Growth of Spirituality in Everyday Life

By Dory Dzinski was doing a demo in the old Wild Oats many years ago and people approached my table and asked about my presentation. I told them that it revolved around spirituality. Two separate people, upon hearing the term, immediately threw up their arms and said, “Oh no, I don’t want any part of that.” Apparently, there was a fear aspect to spirituality for these individuals.

I

A spiritual life is now often equated with higher health. It could bring a deeper relationship with the body, the self, others, nature, the ultimate being (of your belief system), and an overall sense of peace and connection. The consequence of success in any one of these areas, considering the butterfly effect, is a healthier and happier planet, beginning with any microcosm, anywhere. Surprisingly, or not, there is still confusion over the meaning of spirituality. Fair enough – it comes in so many different packages, we must be careful not to define it too rigidly. Consider the age-old metaphor of a hanging mobile or a tree. There is one main structure representing spirituality, but off of that major structure hang different sections like branches. One branch is that of religion, from which hang many smaller branches. Many believe religion and spirituality are two different things. In actuality, some people experience their spirituality through religion, religion being one of the branches off the main structure of spirituality. It is becoming common to hear it said that one is not religious, but one is spiritual. These folks are indicating another branch off the overall spiritual structure; possibly several branches with some semblance of interconnectedness. They have left organized religion behind and have ventured out on their own path. After all, when we are born, we do not choose our religion, our parents do. As we grow in personal experience, self knowledge, and self definition, we may make other choices that feel healthier and more authentic. One of the biggest interests of the spiritually aware, or emerging, individual is the development and expansion of personal consciousness and universal awareness. Increased self awareness, recognition of a higher power(s), stronger connection to the whole, contribution to the oneness, connectedness to all realms, and radical acceptance of what is. There are many practices that cultivate these goals, from yoga, meditation, and mindfulness to various prayer practices and vision quests, and countless more. Many have come to consider an emergence into a more spiritual way of life as a deepening. The consideration of ultimate purpose, life path and life lessons, spiritual or sacred contracts, past life 18

influences, karma, soul longings, communion with higher powers or higher self, development of intuition, and so forth are all pieces of the spiritually emerging person’s puzzle. Spirituality may also involve a very close connection with the Earth – its resources, its plants, animals, water, air, mountains, and deserts. Extended and varying communication with the Earth inhabitants may begin to evolve – animals, plants and trees, deities and even those from other realms such as fairies and elementals. Spirituality is practiced in the inner cities and third world countries through countless acts of service, contribution, and kindness. Schools are set up, education is provided, funding is given, human connection is made – the spirituality of traveling, teaching, sharing, and assisting continues to increase. Some people engage in their spirituality through ritual. They celebrate holidays, holy days, solstices, equinoxes, and moon cycles. They celebrate sowing and harvest. They light candles, have meaningful statuary around their home and grounds, engage in specific prayer practices or simply have every day conversations with Creator all throughout the day. They have favorite saints, deities, ascended masters, angels, ancestors, power animals, and guides that they connect with to accompany and guide them through life. Some people engage in spirituality through art – poetry, painting, carving, music, prose. Through activating their chakras, they are inspired, enlightened, and invited to birth beauty in any way that moves them. Most importantly, spirituality is the recognition of something greater than ourselves – we are all part of the whole. Every word, thought and action impacts all of us. The ways to engage in a spiritually enhanced life are countless – find your way and enrich your life. When you are healthier and more balanced – we all win! Fibromyalgia Misdiagnosis: What Else Could it Be? By David Brady, ND t is important to know that only a small number of patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia actually suffer from this classic variety of the syndrome. Up to 2/3 of people who are told they have FM have actually received a fibromyalgia misdiagnosis and are really suffering from another problem. Fibromyalgia is the correct diagnosis only when all other medical and functional conditions have been ruled out.

I

Doctors often use the single word fibromyalgia to diagnose a complex of symptoms that can have multiple causes. Worse yet, doctors often prescribe the same treatment package to all the patients they label with the term fibromyalgia. It is like using the term back pain and prescribing muscle relaxers to all patients with back pain. Sometimes the one-size-fits-all prescription may help patients get better, but not usually. There are 3 broad categories of these conditions, other than classic fibromyalgia, that are most often the cause of widespread pain and fatigue. Unfortunately, the standard treatment approach for classic fibromyalgia will not help patients with pain and fatigue caused by conditions within any of these 3 categories. So what’s the solution to this dilemma? Actually the answer is simple. Find the cause of the widespread pain and fatigue, and prescribe comprehensive treatments that eliminate that cause. What Else Could it Be? Medical problems that may cause widespread pain and fatigue. Examples include hypothyroidism, anemia, MS, inflammatory arthritis, autoimmune connective tissue disorders, and small fiber polyneuropathy. In patients who complain about generalized pain and fatigue, it is imperative that the doctor rule out the presence of any medical condition or disease that is known to cause many of the symptoms associated with classic FM. Hypothyroidism, anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, Lyme disease, rheumatic auto-immune disorders such as ankylosing spondylitis (AS) or scleroderma, multiple sclerosis, small fiber polyneuropathy, and cancer are some possible causes for symptoms of vague and diffuse body pain associated with pronounced fatigue. Most of the medical assessment appropriate in this type of situation comes in the form of conducting a comprehensive medical health history, a quality hands-on physical examination and thorough laboratory testing.

20

Natural Nutmeg - August 2016

Musculoskeletal problems that may cause widespread pain and fatigue: examples are myofascial trigger points, spinal joint problems such disc degeneration and pinched nerves. Myofascial pain syndrome, one of the most common reasons for a mistaken diagnosis of classic FM, is pain that is actually arising from several muscles and joints of the body. Widespread pain is often caused by a few different painful conditions that all put together feel like just one big painful condition. This happens quite frequently with senior patients, who often have some degree of arthritis in several joints, combined with myofascial problems, and come to their doctor with a complaint of widespread pain. Many senior patients have an overlap of general widespread pain from arthritis, but also have one or two localized muscle or joint problems that could respond well to treatment by a physical therapist, chiropractor, or massage therapist. A basic principle of diagnosis can quickly determine if pain is coming from a muscle or joint. Certain movements should reproduce the exact pain being experiencing if the pain is coming from a musculoskeletal structure. For example, if the patient has pain between the shoulder blades coming from the neck or shoulders, movements of the neck or shoulders should cause the pain to get worse. If there is absolutely no movement or position that makes the pain worse, the pain may not be coming from a muscle or joint and other sources of the pain should be considered. Functional/Metabolic problems that may cause widespread pain and fatigue: examples are subtle functional hypothyroidism, inefficiency of energy production in the cells of the body due to mitochondrial dysfunction, nutritional insufficiencies (including vitamin D, CoQ10, carnitine, B vitamins, magnesium, etc.), chemical and food sensitivities, reactions to medications, and other problems with body metabolism and biochemistry. More subtle “functional” disorders may represent various types of sub-clinical disease states and disorders involving dysfunction of internal organs and individual metabolism, rather than true pathology or disease. These functional disorders range the gamut from simple vitamin and mineral insufficiencies, to more hidden functional disorders such as energy metabolism disorders (mitochondrial dysfunction), subtle endocrine imbalances (subclinical thyroid dis-

orders, abnormalities is stress physiology, etc.), opportunistic intestinal infections (dysbiosis), blood sugar abnormalities (reactive dysglycemia), post-viral immune suppression, and other conditions that are not readily apparent on standard laboratory screening tests. A Message From Your Superconscious Mind By Lisa Zaccheo, MA ost of you don’t know me, or even know that I exist for that matter and that’s OK. I know you and guide you whenever I can. I’m the one that pops those out of the box ideas and solutions into your mind when you’re least expecting it. I’m the one that connects you to source and enables you to feel those occasional moments of pure joy, happiness and oneness. I’m the one who delivers the little messages from your loved ones who have crossed over. Not that you always listen.

M

I know you don’t ignore me on purpose. You have a very busy life with little contemplation time. I look down from my perch and see you running around from here to there, striving to find a sense of purpose and accomplishment. I know how elusive it can be because there’s always more to accomplish. I also notice that you don’t spend much time acknowledging all that you do. You spend the bulk of your energy focusing on what remains to be done. It also saddens me that you feel that you have to do it all alone. Most of you have never been taught about my purpose in being, or how to utilize my, if I don’t say so myself, considerable strengths. Let me formally introduce myself. I’m your Superconscious mind; the part of your mind that’s most closely connected to the creative force, the energy that goes by many names, the energy that brought you into being. I am one of the four primary aspects of your mind. We all have our own unique talents and responsibilities. Your conscious mind is the logical, rational, analytical one. Your subconscious is the emotional, intuitive, creative mind that houses your memories as well as the decision and habit patterns that were originated at one time by the conscious mind. Your unconscious mind is in charge of all the body functions that occur whether you’re conscious of them or not, as well as the function of your immune system. I’m your spiritual mind…the part of you that’s connected to the collective consciousness, which is a pool of all consciousnesses that exist or have ever existed. This is where true genius resides. And I which means you - have access to all that knowledge and wisdom. There’s more that I can share with you than can be put into words here so I’ll share what I feel is most important. Then, if you want to know anything else, and I do mean anything else, I’m happy to connect with you.

22

Natural Nutmeg - August 2016

My pearls of wisdom: Maybe you’ve heard it before. Take the time to feel what’s really important to you versus what society dictates. This is not a thinking process; it’s a feeling one. What are you truly interested in, curious about, what do you spend your time daydreaming about? What are your wishes and dreams? What would your life be like if you got in touch with what you want? What would your heart and soul want versus all the ego mind’s “shoulds”; if you had allowed or been allowed to let your true self shine from a very early age? For a small few, your life wouldn’t look much different because you’ve been authentic, but for the majority it would look and more importantly feel much different and yes, I can say it, better. I’ve watched from my perch. Watched you from a very early age trying to “fit in”, which to be honest I find interesting. Trying to fit into the family, at school, at work, in society. Where did you get the notion that you’re supposed to fit it? Is a one of a kind masterpiece in a museum supposed to fit in? No! It is supposed to stand out, even amongst the other masterpieces, not because it’s better, but because it’s different and beautiful in its own right. And yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One of you will think it’s the most stunning thing you’ve every seen and the other will think it’s just so-so. It doesn’t have anything to do with the piece, it has everything to do with the lenses of perception you’re seeing it through. That applies to humans too. The truth and nothing but the truth is that you’re one of a kind. You were created that way and you were created that way with a purpose. You were never and are never intended to fit in. You were designed to stand out and be outstanding. You were intended to follow your bliss because your bliss leads you to your path and your path leads you to your purpose and your purpose is the meaningful contribution you’re intended to be making down there on the earth plane.

You know all those wild ideas that have popped into your head all those years; those ideas that either you or someone else said, “You can’t do that”? Well those ideas came from me, those were my attempts to put you or keep you on path, and I venture to say that as you look back on some of those ideas you wish you had executed them, because now someone else has and they’re very successful as a result. I know you can’t do everything, well actually you can, but you do have some perceived limitations of time. I get it. I just wish you didn’t spend any of your time doing things just because others think you should. Others think you should because that thing is on their path, or they’re trying to fit in and they don’t want you to prevent them from accomplishing their mission. Can you imagine what the world would look like if we were all on path and honored and supported each other on that journey? The human species would be much more vibrant, alive and happy I can tell you that.

Fatigued? Boost Your Energy Naturally & Safely By Michael Dworkin, PD, CCN & J. Erika Dworkin Loss of energy is a common sign of aging and disease. Muscles weaken and atrophy. The heart loses its ability to efficiently pump blood. Memory falters, and organ systems go on the blink. You feel tired and sluggish, both physically and mentally …. What’s happening is that your mitochondria, the powerhouses located in each of your cells, are unable to keep up with your body’s energy demands. ~Julian Whitaker, MD, 3 Ways to Tune Up Your Mitochondria and Enhance Energy, www.drwhitaker.com (Feb 2014)

D

o you wonder why you often feel exhausted? There are many potential, sometimes complex, overlapping causes of this common problem, which may indicate a serious chronic underlying health condition. Exploring and applying even a few of the ideas discussed here may just launch you into a whole new world of wellness! Common Causes of Fatigue & Some Natural Solutions The body’s cells contain powerhouses (mitochondria) that make ATP, the energy molecule. Physical, mental, or emotional stressors can impact ATP production, which in turn can cause fatigue. Adrenal Fatigue/Stress The adrenal glands, two walnut-sized organs above the kidneys, are involved in producing over 50 hormones that drive almost every bodily function. Specifically, they balance these energy-related hormones: glucocorticoids (especially cortisol); mineralocorticoids (especially aldosterone); sex hormones; and epinephrine/adrenaline. When the brain registers a threatening stressor, the adrenal medulla releases adrenaline hormones to help the body react (the fight-or-flight response), rushing blood to the brain, heart and muscles. The adrenal cortex then releases corticosteroids to dampen bodily functions not required for immediate survival. Adrenal fatigue can result from single major stressors or prolonged stress, exposure to environmental toxins, inadequate sleep, and unhealthy lifestyle choices. The wide range of symptoms often includes fatigue and sluggish thyroid function. Supplements that support adrenal function include: 1. Adrenal Glandular Extract [contains adrenal gland hormones (e.g., hydrocortisone)] 2. Pantothenic Acid (vitamin B5) (generates adrenaline) 3. Cordyceps Sinensis (traditional Chinese medicinal mushroom; increases ATP and insulin sensitivity) 4. L-Tyrosine (precursor of several adrenal stress hormones and neurotransmitters, including L-dopa, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine; especially effective when anxiety accompanies stress) 5.Rhodiola Rosea (standardized) (adaptogenic herb that improves 24

activity of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine; prevents depletion of adrenal hormones). Blood Sugar Imbalance Glucose, a sugar in the blood derived from consumed carbohydrates, is the main source of energy for the body and brain. The body converts one glucose molecule into approximately 31 ATP molecules. Either high (pre/diabetes) or low (hypoglycemia) blood sugar can thus cause extreme fatigue, but proper diet, exercise, and certain dietary supplements can help manage both. The islets of Langerhans in the pancreas secrete the hormone insulin, which lowers blood glucose levels. Type II diabetes is marked by elevated blood glucose resulting from either the inadequate production of insulin or the cells’ inability to use insulin (insulin resistance). The American Diabetes Association provides these fasting blood glucose guidelines: (1) normal < 100 mg/dl; (2) pre-diabetics = 100-125 mg/dl; and (3) diabetics > 126 mg/dl. Hypoglycemia can occur in diabetics who improperly combine medicine, food, and/or exercise. It can less commonly occur in non-diabetics when there is too much insulin in the blood. Causes of hypoglycemia include prescription drugs, excess alcohol consumption, liver, heart or kidney disease, and hormone and enzyme deficiencies. Necessary dietary considerations are discussed below. Reducing excess body fat, especially waist circumference, should be a primary goal (targets: men < 37”; women < 34.5”). Supplements that lower high blood sugar include berberine (from goldenseal), cinnamon, mulberry leaf extract, chromium polynicotinate (combats insulin resistance; facilitates uptake of glucose in the cells and weight loss), gymnema sylvestre (stimulates insulin production), magnesium ( commonly deficient in diabetics; increases the number and sensitivity of insulin receptors), vanadyl sulfate (mimicks insulin), and milk thistle (ideally standardized for 80% silymarin; lowers/stabilizes blood glucose levels and protects the liver, the most important tissue involved in insulin utilization). Hypoglycemics should eat nutrient dense foods, especially protein, roughly every two hours. They can also benefit from chromium polynicotinate, a multivitamin high in B-complex; balanced omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and fiber. Candidiasis (Yeast Overgrowth) Chronic fatigue is a classic symptom of systemic candidiasis [Candida-related complex (CRC)], an overgrowth of the parasitic, yeast-like fungus Candida albicans, which is normally present in the body.

CRC treatment involves: 1. Starving the overgrown yeast with a Candida diet 2. Replacing the good bacteria that the yeast has destroyed or crowded out 3. Killing the overgrown yeast with nutritional supplements 4. Supporting the adrenal and thyroid glands and immune system. Effective supplements include: 1. Yeast fighters (grapefruit seed extract, caprylic acid, aloe juice/gel, garlic, pau d’arco, oregano extract; black walnut) 2. Digestive tract supporters (probiotics, S. boulardii, L-glutamine, EFAs) 3. Immunity enhancers (thymus extract, astragalus, whey/other protein) 4. Adrenal and liver glandulars/supporters. Diet Toxicity & Draining Lifestyle Choices A person ultimately becomes what he eats. A diet high in toxic sugar/artificial sweeteners, high-glycemic carbohydrates, sodium, caffeine, processed/fast foods, alcohol, and/or bad fats, eventually will cause the body’s cell, tissue, and organ functions to slow or break down, and may cause underlying excessive weight gain/obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and other often avoidable degenerative diseases. Food sensitivities/ allergies can also cause fatigue. The most common allergens include pro-inflammatory gluten and dairy, dyes and preservatives, nuts, fish and shellfish, soy, egg, and corn. Consuming these foods (organic whenever possible) is generally likely to boost overall health and energy: fish high in omega-3 fatty acids; chicken/turkey; cruciferous and other non-starchy vegetables (including green super foods); berries; fiber; beans; olives/olive oil; avocadoes; nuts and seeds; high-alkaline water; kelp/seaweed (in moderation); Celtic/Himalayan sea salt (rich in minerals). Raw foods provide higher levels of nutrients than when cooked. Poor lifestyle choices also lower energy levels. A healthy lifestyle includes healthy relationships, adequate sleep and recreation, satisfying work, and stress management. Given the positive relationship between spiritual/religious practice and health outcomes, those who incorporate some type of spirituality (prayer, meditation) into their lives tend to feel less fatigued when major life stressors strike.

Hormonal Imbalances While female and male bodies produce the same hormones, chronic fatigue generally warrants medical testing for levels of estrogen and progesterone in women, testosterone in men, and human growth hormone (HGH) in both. Both young and menopausal women can suffer from what John Lee, MD, termed “estrogen dominance” (progesterone deficiency). Stimulating excess estrogen can cause draining anxiety, agitation, and muscle tension, among other symptoms. Progesterone has a calming effect on the body.

To rectify hormonal imbalance, a practitioner might prescribe natural bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). Effective, affordable, natural sources of both estrogen (red clover, non-GMO soy isoflavones, black cohosh) and progesterone (transdermal cream is most effective) are also available without a prescription. Testosterone in men, which derives in part from progesterone, is significant to male sexuality and reproduction, muscle mass, hair growth, bone density and red blood cell maintenance, and a general sense of wellbeing. At about age 30, testosterone levels in men begin to decline. Natural testosterone boosters include vitamin D, zinc, healthy fats, and epimedium (proven in animal tests). Hypothyroidism A sluggish thyroid gland is one of the most common causes of low energy. Located at the base of the neck, the thyroid gland makes the hormone thyroxine (T4), which converts to triiodothyronine (T3) and reverse T3 (RT3). T3 enhances production of ATP and RT3 slows it down. The hypothalamus in the brain releases thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), thus causing the pituitary gland (also

in the brain) to release thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which controls production of T3 and T4. Excess stress causes the hypothalamus to tell the pituitary to produce less TSH, which then results in decreased T4 and overall thyroid activity. While a holistic practitioner’s input is critical to the management of hypothyroidism, it is valuable to note that a correct zinccopper ratio, and proper levels of selenium, l-tyrosine, and iodine, all positively impact thyroid function. A natural thyroid glandular supplement can also boost thyroid function. While individuals suffering chronically from depleted energy have many natural self-care options, medical testing can provide critical specific guidance. Treatment by a holistic practitioner is especially important when a genetic or degenerative disease may be an issue. The Myth of Cardiovascular Training for Weight Loss By Jessica Pizano hether you have recently stepped on a scale to find that the numbers are not tipping in your favor or noticed your favorite pair of pants is getting too tight you may be thinking that it is time to lose some weight. Like most people you know that lowering your calories and starting an exercise program is the appropriate course of action. While this is likely the case, the type of exercise you choose can make a big difference in your success. Inevitably, people go straight to cardiovascular exercise. This time of year it is evidenced by all of the joggers out in the early morning and evening hours. In the winter time you can find these cardio addicts vying for the treadmills, ellipticals and stairmasters.

W

Caloric Expenditure Certainly, cardiovascular exercise burns calories. So, why is it that for so many people it does not seem to be the right type of exercise for weight loss? Well, let’s look at caloric expenditure in general to answer this question. When calculating total caloric needs we have three types of ways we expend energy. First, we have our resting metabolic rate (RMR). Simply stated, this is the amount of calories one needs to stay alive with no activity. This comprises about 70% of total daily energy expenditure in sedentary individuals. Whether your body is using energy to allow your heart to pump, your digestive system to breakdown your food, or kidneys to filter out waste products, these all contribute to your resting metabolic rate. In nutrition and fitness, we can estimate RMR by calculating your basal metabolic rate (BMR). Various formulas are available such as the Harris-Benedict or Katch-McArdle equations to estimate BMR. The second type of energy expenditure contributing to total caloric expenditure is the thermic effect of food. This is simply the amount of energy beyond what is expended through RMR that is used for the process of digesting food and storing the energy for later use. This generally comprises 6-10% of total energy expenditure. Finally, we have the energy that is expended through physical activity. This generally accounts for about 20% of total energy expenditure. You can see your total activity is not a large component of caloric expenditure by any means. Cardiovascular Exercise and Weight Loss What does this have to do with cardiovascular exercise? When you perform cardiovascular exercise you burn calories that are added to the physical activity portion of your energy equation. For a 150 lb individual this means that walking at a moderate pace for 30 minutes might burn 113 calories. Cycling at a pace of 12 to 13 miles per hour would burn 272 calories for the same amount of time and an elliptical trainer would help you burn 306 calories. Running at 6 miles per hour (10 minute mile pace) expends slightly more calories at 340 calories for half an hour. Seems low doesn’t it? Are you wondering how many hours of cardio it would take to lose one pound per week?

28

Natural Nutmeg - August 2016

Let’s crunch some numbers. There are 3500 calories per pound of body weight. If you are willing to exercise seven days per week (which I wouldn’t recommend because it is not healthy) you would have to burn 500 calories per workout. If you want to accomplish that by walking it would likely take two hours and fifteen minutes of your time per day. Do you have time for that? I certainly do not. Even if you could find the time to do lots of cardiovascular exercise, overtime this will cause additional problems. The first is that overtraining is very likely when you do long duration cardiovascular training. Exercise, while good for the body in moderation, is stressful when intensity and duration are too high. This puts quite a bit of strain on the body and can cause overuse injuries such as tendonitis, bursitis, iliotibidal syndrome, plantar fasciitis and other injuries. It can cause excess stress to the adrenal glands. When you exercise or are under stress this increases a hormone produced by the adrenals called cortisol. Cortisol levels should fall after exercise. However, with overtraining, there is prolonged stress on the body causing the adrenals to produce more and more cortisol. Cortisol can increase blood glucose levels and make the body store additional fat around the abdomen. This is certainly counterproductive to a weight loss goal. Eventually over time the strain on the adrenals is just too much. The adrenals begin to lose the ability to produce cortisol causing adrenal fatigue. This causes many symptoms including fatigue, postural hypotension, difficulty waking up, inability to handle stress, salt cravings, exercise intolerance, higher energy levels in the evening, a weakened immune system, asthma and allergies, dizziness, dark circles under the eyes, joint pain, loss of muscle, low blood sugar, loss of libido, and weight gain. Another issue with doing excessive cardiovascular exercise is that it generally will substantially increase your appetite. Cardiovascular training is a type of aerobic exercise, meaning that it requires oxygen. Aerobic metabolism is a way of producing energy in longer duration exercise (more than two minutes). It is the energy system that we use most frequently for most activities. We preferentially use carbohydrates as the fuel for this system because they are most readily used. However, we may also use protein and fat. Generally, the lower the intensity of the activity (for example your body while you sit and read this article), the more likely your body is to use fat for fuel (Herein lies another myth, the myth of the fat burning zone! The lower the intensity of the activity the more likely you are to burn fat. However, you won’t burn very many calories without intensity.). As the workload increases your body does not have sufficient time to convert fat or protein into sugar (a process called gluconeogenesis which occurs in the liver) to use as fuel. So, when you return home from your hour jog, swim, elliptical session, or even Zumba class your blood glucose levels are low. The brain senses that fuel levels are too low and will trigger a hormone cascade to make you want to eat. The longer you wait to refuel after exercise the greater the likelihood that you will want to binge (often on all the wrong foods).

Resistance Training While resistance training does not burn that many calories (102 calories in 30 minutes), it still is an important part of any weight loss program. How is this helpful? Earlier I mentioned the Katch-McKardle equation which is used to calculate BMR. This equation is BMR=370 + (9.79759510 X Lean Mass in pounds). Lean mass includes everything in your body that is not fat. Resistance training is an ideal way to increase lean mass (muscle mass specifically). This ultimately will help to increase your BMR. Choose 8-10 exercises for each of the major body parts including legs, chest, back, shoulders, biceps and triceps. The more muscles an exercise recruits, the more calories it will help you expend. This means squats, lunges, deadlifts, pushups and rows will help you burn more calories than lateral raises, hamstring curls, leg extensions, biceps curls, triceps kickbacks, calf raises and other single-joint exercises. Make sure to choose sets, repetitions and rest intervals appropriate for your training goal. To increase strength levels, choose a heavy weight that you can lift only one to five times. Take longer rests, typically three to five minutes between sets. Since you will be doing fewer repetitions you can aim for four to six total sets. If your goal is to gain muscle, typically we aim for eight to 12 repetitions. Higher volume training is ideal for this goal so anywhere from three to five sets is ideal with 30 to 60 seconds rest between sets. If this is your first time doing resistance training, you are looking to improve endurance or are recovering from an injury choose to do 12 to 20 repetitions for a total of one to three sets. Taking minimal rest (0 to 90 seconds) is recommended. Consider varying your program every four weeks to allow your body to continue to make progress. Circuit Training Circuit training for half an hour may still only burn 272 calories, but it will also help you gain lean muscle mass. Circuits generally contain 8-10 exercises including resistance training, calisthenics and plyometrics. An example circuit of moderate difficulty might include: squat jumps, lat pull, chest press, reverse lunges, 1-leg deadlift, reverse flies, stability ball crunch and calf raises. Since circuit training also counts as cardiovascular training this also increases your heart rate beyond typical levels found during strength training which allows you to burn even more calories.

Peripheral Heart Action Looking for a greater cardiovascular challenge? Consider peripheral heart action training. This is a variation on strength training that alternates upper and lower body exercises. This forces the heart to work harder as it has to pump blood both to the upper and lower limbs in rapid succession. So, for example, an example of a basic peripheral heart action training program might be the following: forward lunges, pushups, squats, rows, deadlifts, shoulder press, step ups, triceps dips, stability ball hamstring curls, biceps curls. Compound Sets If you are looking to increase lean muscle, but still burn a few additional calories consider compound sets. This type of training pairs two exercises back-to-back for different body parts with minimal rest. Consider pairing legs with shoulders, chest with back, and biceps with triceps. This will allow greater caloric expenditure, keep the workout fast paced, and presents a greater challenge for your heart. Super Sets Super sets are similar to compound sets. However, in this case you will do two exercises for the same body part back-to-back with minimal rest. You will need to do only six to 10 repetitions per exercise so that the total volume isn’t too high. Some example super sets might include: • Bench press and pushups • Pull ups and rows • Lunges and Squats • Shoulder press and reverse flies • Deadlift and hamstring curls Interval Training Interval training approaches the fat loss equation from a different angle. An interval is simply a short period of work followed by an active rest. This can be done using cardiovascular equipment such as a treadmill, elliptical, recumbent or upright bike or stair master. It can also be done outdoors doing sprints (or fast walk) followed by a jog or walk. Resistance training, rebound training (trampoline), jump ropes and calisthenics may also be used. The higher the intensity of the interval, the shorter the duration should be. So, if you are going to do an all-out sprint (can also be done on an elliptical or bike for a lower impact option), consider an interval of just 10 to 15 seconds in length. There are many benefits to using such a brief interval. The first is that when you do such a short sprint you are using an anaerobic energy system. This means the energy

system does not require oxygen. When you do such a high intensity sprint you will not notice your breath until after you stop. Heart rate will continue to elevate even after you finish sprinting. This will help you burn more calories due to EPOC. EPOC stands for excess post-exercise oxygen consumption and means that your body’s metabolism will continue to be elevated even after you stop exercising. This occurs quite a bit with interval training and will also happen with various forms of resistance training (see above). Eating for Weight Loss I would be remiss to discuss weight loss without discussing diet (which is indeed a four letter word!). As a certified nutrition

specialist (CNS), nothing frustrates me more than hearing about all of the fad diets. Most help you lose weight by cutting out a much needed category of nutrient. For example, the Atkins diet cuts out carbohydrates (even healthy fruits and many vegetables don’t make the cut in the induction stage of this diet). Each of us are biochemically unique. This means that one man’s food is another man’s poison. While that might seem trite, I have found this to be true. Some need to rely heavily on protein to keep them satiated and find that starchier foods such as grains and potatoes pack on the pounds. Others find that a predominantly plant-based diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans is a better way to go. Regardless of your particular body chemistry there are certainly some basic guidelines that apply to all of us.

Natural Nutmeg - August 2016

These include: • Eat 7 to 11 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Only 1-3 of these servings should be fruits. Include plenty of dark, leafy greens such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, arugula, spinach and Swiss chard, as well as brightly colored vegetables including peppers, carrots, radishes, sweet potatoes, squash, and eggplant. • Drink half of your body weight in ounces of water per day. This means a 150 pound individual requires 75 ounces of water. • Get adequate protein. 10% to 35% of calories should come from protein. This includes animal proteins including poultry, fish, shellfish, eggs, red meat, and dairy products. Vegetarian options include nuts, seeds, beans, tofu, seitan, tempeh, and even vegan protein powders (rice, pea, hemp, soy, etc.). • Avoid eating too many refined carbohydrates such as white rice, white bread, white pasta, cookies, cakes, muffins, candy and other sugary treats. These will lead to elevated blood glucose levels, weight gain, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and Type-two diabetes. • Make sure to include sufficient fat in your diet, but don’t eat too much fat either. Fat should comprise no more

than 30% of your calories. Choose from healthy omega-3 rich fats such as fish oils, walnuts, and flax; olive oil; avocado, nuts and seeds; and coconut oil. Avoid partially hydrogenated oils which will increase your cardiovascular disease risk (often found in shelf-stable peanut butter, crackers, cookies, and margarine). • Don’t overdo grains and make sure they are whole grains. Watch portion sizes. A cup of most whole grains (such as brown rice) contains 200 calories. • Remember to watch overall caloric intake. Do not starve yourself as this is counterproductive, but do not eat excessive calories either. • Allow yourself the occasional cheat. Better to eat a small amount of a favorite food than deny yourself which will likely cause you to binge on it later. • Vary your diet. Avoid eating the same foods all the time. Not only does this limit your nutrient intake, but it can cause digestive problems and food sensitivities. • Use plenty of spices and herbs. Not only do these add lots of additional flavor without calories, they are full of phytonutrients, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, and some are even antimicrobial.

Remember, in the end your nutrition and exercise program should reflect your own personal goals, interests and needs. Clients always ask me what the best type of exercise is. The simple answer is anything that you enjoy. This is the only way to make it part of your lifestyle permanently. Food should also be enjoyable. Experiment. Try new things. BERNIE

By Bernie Siegel, MD

Communication From the Other Side

I

often like to advertise my lectures as about PMS. No not post menopausal syndrome but about the practical, mystical and spiritual aspects of life. I get lots of books sent to me for comment and received one the other day entitled, Postcards From Heaven by Dan Gordon about everyday messages of love from the other side. They are about many events which were signs to him of communication with loved ones who had died. One that touched me and reminded me of something my wife and I experienced was his writing about seeing a wild rabbit outside his sliding glass door and the rabbit just sat there looking at him. He went out to offer it food and it didn’t run away or eat. It just kept following him and watching him play with his kids in the yard. He felt a connection with it communicating from one of his family members who had died and it left only after he shared that with the rabbit. Several years ago one of my patients went to the Hawaiian Island of Kauai to resolve a lifetime of conflict with her mother before she died of cancer. I heard later that she died on the island. A couple of years later my wife Bobbie and I went there to lecture and lead a workshop. We went into a store and noticed a butterfly confused by a ceiling light and so my wife climbed up and placed her hand into the light. The butterfly came down on her hand and then stayed with us all day, that evening and the next afternoon when the workshop was finished when it flew up and away. When I say it stayed with us I mean it basically sat upon my wife’s shoulder or in her hand wherever we went. I remember saying to her when it was bed time, “Honey you can’t sleep with a butterfly.” “I’ll go out on the porch and brush it off.” She came back in and told me she had done so and I said, “Look at your other shoulder.” Yup, the butterfly had switched places and come back in with her. We finally offered it some sugar water to get it off her shoulder and we jumped into bed. It was quite a mystical experience and I truly felt it was my patients way of saying she had worked things out and goodbye.

Natural Nutmeg - August 2016

Many other things have happened to me which lead me to believe because of what I have experienced. I’ll share them some time in the future but they include having a near death experience as a child choking on a toy I aspirated; a past life experience which I envisioned spontaneously when a friend asked me why I was living this life and some mystics and healers telling me about the spirit people standing around me I couldn’t see but they could. Especially one night, years ago, in Madison when I felt like the talk I was giving was coming from somewhere else and I was being used to deliver it. A woman came up afterwards and said, “I’ve heard you before. That was better than usual. Standing in front of you for the whole lecture was a man and I drew his picture for you.” When she handed it to me it was exactly like the inner guide I visualized in my meditations. Same clothes beard and more. I still have it hanging on the wall. For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel-or Bernie, as he prefers to becalled-needs no introduction. He has touched many lives all overthe Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our Society grapples with today.
