PUBLISHER'SLETTER

I

t’s a brand new year and the perfect time to evaluate your level of fulfillment or satisfaction in your life by doing a life wheel exercise. The life wheel includes: personal development, health & wellness, fun & enjoyment, family & relationships, career & finances, and spirituality. You measure how fulfilled you are in each area by rating yourself on a scale of 1-10, 1 being unfulfilled, 10 being completely fulfilled. Most people will find that they are around a 7-9 in some areas, and only a 3-5 in other areas. What is important to remember is that if you are low in one area, it will trickle over into other areas and affect them, even if you have scored high in these areas. So, let’s examine each area and give you some ideas to expand your life! 1. Personal development: you become fulfilled when you reach beyond your intellectual abilities by reading great books, listening to stimulating messages, learning new things and taking classes and workshops. 2. Health & wellness: find new ways to get active, try a new exercise class or sport, go for a hike, dance, whatever it takes to get off the couch. 3. Fun & enjoyment: when you take good care of yourself allowing for rest, renewal and relaxation without feeling guilty, you are ensuring the greatest return on your current and future performance. 4. Family & Relationships: when you reach out by focusing on developing, deepening, and balancing relationships with both family and friends you are enjoying a fulfilling life. Find the time to have dinner together, play games with your children or have a date night with your spouse. 5. Career & Finances: when you begin thinking of ways in which you can be of greater service to your customers, your employers and employees, you will not only begin to earn more money, it will also enable you to grow intellectually and spiritually. 6. Spirituality: you are expanding your level of fulfillment in spirituality when you practice forgiveness, gratitude, and mindfulness. When you expand your comfort zone of what is possible in any area of your life, you are reaching out and living a fuller, richer, more prosperous life. Here’s to a great 2019! Hypnosis for Weight Reduction

Try Acupuncture for the New Year

M

lthough being overweight or obese is affected by genetics and physical inactivity, the problem of excessive weight largely stems from overeating and/or eating the wrong kinds of foods, particularly processed foods, sugar and excess salt that creates water retention and inflammation. Overeating can be used as an attempt to manage uncomfortable emotions such as anger, anxiety, boredom, loneliness, and even depression. Sometimes a sweet "treat" is used as a reward, which may lead to habits that pack on the pounds. Snacking in between meals and "mindless eating" while watching TV also contributes to excessive weight.

att Maneggia is an experienced Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner with a prestigious acupuncture training, spanning 3,000 hours, including 1,000 hours of clinical training. Matt interned at a TCM integrative hospital in Chengdu, China, under guidance of some of China’s most esteemed TCM practitioners. He opened Sea Change Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine in 2007 and continues to practice acupuncture at CT Family Acupuncture today. CT Family acupuncture is a TCM clinic specializing specifically in acupuncture. They also offer herbal medicine, cupping therapy, chiropractic care, and naturopathic care.

Hypnosis can help people change their eating behaviors, and has proven to be an effective approach for weight reduction. In a standard hypnosis session, the hypnotist will interview the client and assess the specific behaviors that are problematic for the individual. The hypnotist will then induce the client into a hypnotic state and make suggestions to the individual to activate new behaviors to replace the problematic behaviors. Changing behaviors requires changing thoughts. Through hypnosis, the client learns to think differently in ways that help them make better eating choices. For example, some people eat something off of their “approved foods” list and then say, “Oh well, I made a mistake so I might as well go all the way and eat all of the cookies, or all of the ice cream.” Now imagine that instead you thought of a tray of glasses, for example, and you accidently dropped one glass and broke it. Would you then decide that because you had broken one glass you might as well smash all the rest of the glasses? Of course not. You learn to re-frame the "slip" into just what it is, a mistake, a slip, and let it go.

TCM is a complete healthcare system, which spans 3,000 years and continues to develop to this day. Unlike many TCM practitioners, Matt uses a variety of these TCM modalities and philosophies while practicing. Patients relax on infrared heated, OM Jade Therapy mats, which increase circulation and induce relaxation. Following a free, 20 minute consultation, Matt tailors treatments specifically to each patient’s needs and lifestyle, so to provide an effective, yet practical care plan. Matt next applies acupuncture using special needles, which stimulates the anti-inflammatory response and increases circulation to tissues, muscles, joints, and organs. In response, endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine, are released, which stimulates the parasympathetic nervous response. This returns the body to homeostasis and optimizes the immune system, allowing the body to heal itself. Research shows acupuncture may relieve symptoms from headaches, migraines, mood disorders, fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, fatigue, menopause, sleeplessness, digestive problems, allergies, and/or menstrual cramps. In many cases, this negates the need for pharmaceuticals or surgery. CT Family acupuncture strives to bring these benefits to as many people as possible by working with insurance companies to provide exceptional care at a reasonable cost.

Hypnosis is not a cure-all, however, it is one of the best and often one of the last resorts for transformation and healing. Through hypnosis, individuals can discover and address the root causes of their struggles with weight and eating behaviors. Hypnosis helps clients learn strategies for self-control, which leads to weight change, increased self-confidence, and relief for people who have lost hope of ever achieving inner peace with their bodies and their lives. As a board member of the CT Society of Acupuncturists, Matt advocates for increased access to acupuncture through insurance coverage and integration of acupuncture into the current healthcare system. He can be contacted through his website at www.CTfamilyacupuncture.com or via the main office at 860.503.3676. See ad on page 23.

Be Prepared for Your New Year’s Resolutions

ew Year’s resolutions can be exciting or dreaded due to fear or not being ready to make big changes. The most common New Year’s resolutions relate to health and weight loss or exercise. They can also be related to lots of other issues such as business goals, changing habits, organizing the house, closets or whatever you feel needs a change. Health is a good place to start and even if you aren’t up to doing a dietary cleanse, it is a good idea to eliminate the bad stuff (sugar, refined carbohydrates, processed food, dairy, red meat, alcohol and maybe gluten). Regardless of what your resolutions are, cleaning out your body and giving it a break from heavy, congestion-producing foods will help you reach your other goals easier because you will have more energy, reduced cravings and clearer thinking. These “bad” reduce gut health which leads to fatigue, lowered immunity, sluggishness, allergies, joint pain, headaches and autoimmune disorders. So how does one start a New Year’s resolution? Getting your mind and spirit ready is a huge part of being successful at reaching your goals. It is actually important to cleanse your mind (of bad habits) in order to affect change. Write down things that you are wanting to change or cleanse or things you want to accomplish. Second, figure out what your blocks are that could keep you from reaching your goals. Insecurity, shame, poor self-confidence, or plain old fear could keep you from even realizing something is a goal. Create an affirmation asking for guidance or strength to overcome your blocks. Then take a few minutes each day at the same time to sit quietly allowing your affirmation to help you find what you would like to change. May I have clarity to find what I need to change.” “May I have strength to change my diet.” Start to journal, brainstorm ideas and go back to it during your “cleanse”. Don’t make your resolution an overwhelming task, the best advice is to keep it simple. Donna Bunte of Donna Bunte Whole Health has been practicing Chinese Medicine and holistic health since 1996 when she graduated from Chinese medical school in NYC. She has a masters in Chinese medicine, is an herbalist and licensed acupuncturist as well as an integrative nutrition health coach. Donna’s approach to wellness is a holistic one looking at all aspects of her client’s life to find where the imbalances and weakness are. She offers acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutritional counseling and lifestyle suggestions to help people get back on track where they need it most. Donna is now teaching qigong energy exercises and meditation as well as leading wellness retreats in various locations worldwide. donnabunte.com • health@donnabunte.com • 203.698.0793. Try Yoga for Weight Loss in the New Year

A

s the owner of Sanctuary Power Yoga and a yoga teacher, I love January because it brings new students and new energy into the studio. People resolving to take care of themselves, lose weight, get healthier and feel better. But as January rolls into February, that resolve tends to dissolve. What can you do to make this year different? Try yoga. And if you've tried it before, try it again. I practice and teach yoga because it has changed not just my body, but also my mind, my whole being, and the way I live my life. It didn't happen overnight. It happened when I discovered the style of yoga we teach at Sanctuary. It's a style that's accessible to everybody, and at Sanctuary, it's taught by some of the best teachers in New England. It's physically and mentally challenging. It will help you shape your body, but also help you shape your mind and your life. January is exciting because it is full of potential. But really, you are filled with potential. And you get to uncover and explore your potential when you step onto your yoga mat and take class with us. Our January special is 31 days of unlimited yoga for $31. Make a commitment like this to yourself and you will experience transformation. Not just in your physical body, but in your whole way of being. The more you practice, the better you will feel. The better you feel, the more you will want to practice. And you'll find yourself and your resolve getting stronger. Submitted by Heather Rems Korwin, Owner Sanctuary Power Yoga. Nutmeg “Nuggets” Yoga and Nutrition for Weight Loss

A

s the holidays draw to a close and we begin the New Year many people decide now is the time to shed those unwanted pounds. At the heart of weight loss is a positive connection with our bodies. At Fuller Yoga, we approach this with the connection of both yoga and nutrition. We cannot approach our wellness or weight loss from purely an exercise standpoint but must address our diet as well. In fact, diet is often a larger part of the equation. Experts believe weight loss is 75% what we eat and 25% activity level. Yoga can help with both aspects; it teaches us how to hear our bodies’ messages and translate this to a better understanding of our hunger signals, also giving us a physical boost to our activity level from the exercise. As we learn to listen to our body better through our yoga practice we come to realize that what we once thought was hunger may actually be a need for connection or something other than food. We also need to consider not only how much we are eating, but what we are eating. The general advice we give all clients is to eat more vegetables and shy away from anything in a box. Specifically, the first three things we like to focus on in a client’s diet are water, fiber, and eating low glycemic to manage blood sugar. Water is needed to flush toxins from the body which can interfere with metabolism. Drinking enough water also ensures we don’t confuse our thirst for hunger. Some clients confuse low grade thirst with hunger and reach for food when they really just need a glass of water. Staying hydrated also keeps our energy up and reduces fatigue.

BALANCE your mind, body & soul

with Ayurvedic treatments and consultations.

The more we eat whole foods like fruits and vegetables, the more fiber we are ingesting. It is important to monitor fiber in our diet because it keeps us feeling fuller longer and helps to manage our blood sugar. Fuller Yoga’s nutrition clients learn how to measure and track fiber in their diets to ensure they are achieving recommended levels. Eating a low glycemic diet is huge for weight loss. First and foremost is eliminating refined sugar, but beyond this is learning how to correctly balance the macronutrients. When we include all three in our meals and snacks our blood sugar stays more stable. When reaching for an apple for a snack, include half dozen almonds to get some protein and fat, complementing the carbohydrates in the apple. This is a more balanced snack, will leave you feeling fuller longer and will keep your blood sugar and mood stable. Deb Orosz, Fuller Yoga’s resident nutritionist, will be hosting a 4-week healthy eating series at Fuller Yoga in Glastonbury where clients will learn these basics of weight loss and more healthy eating tips. Find out more information or to schedule a 1:1 consult with Deb, go to www.fulleryoga.com or BIT.LY/NUTRITIONRESERVATIONS. See ad on page 40. 12

The Many Benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma By Henry C. Sobo, MD

P

latelet Rich Plasma, also as known as PRP, takes advantage of your body’s own healing mechanisms. Platelets are the cells in our circulation that have the natural function of helping the healing process through their release of biologically active substances into areas of injury to promote the mechanisms of healing. Harnessing the power of the body’s own platelets was first used over two decades ago to help in healing after dental surgeries. The use of it has grown over the years to include many other areas of medicine. Some of the growth factors are Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor which promotes the health of and growth of new blood vessels. Fibroblast Growth Factor assists cell growth for tissue repair, collagen and hyaluronic acid production. Epithelial growth factor for promotion of wound healing and new blood vessel formation. TGF-beta and PDGF- Platelet Derived Growth Factor- promote new cell generation, collagen production and wound healing. The PRP Process Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is produced from your own blood in an office setting. The patient’s blood is drawn in the same manner as when you have any general blood test. The blood is then spun in a centrifuge with the purpose of separating and removing the platelets from the rest of the blood to produce the Platelet Rich Plasma which contains five to seven times the concentration of platelets normally present in the blood. The PRP with its richer complement of healing and growth factors, is then injected back into the body in the area being treated. PRP for Joints The most well-known use of PRP treatments has been in the field of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. This has resulted in

significant attention from the media because of its use by the NFL, Major League Baseball, Tiger Woods, and other elite athletes. Traditional treatments for both arthritis and sports related joint problems are often only marginally effective. Surgery results are often unsatisfactory and can cause complications and further damage. Cortisone shots are effective in reducing pain for a short period of time, but they don’t address the underlying problem and may lead to joint damage if used repeatedly. Sometimes patients are left with not much more than an icepack and anti-inflammatories. The uses of PRP for orthopedics include: shoulder- rotator cuff tendinitis/tears, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, arthritis, ligament and meniscus tears, tendon damage, Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis. Hair Restoration PRP Injection Therapy helps hair follicles to activate, “wake up” and produce stronger healthier hair again. For patients with thinning hair due to poorly functioning hair follicles, three PRP Hair Restoration injection treatments, performed 4-6 weeks apart, results in a fuller, thicker head of hair. The results may be maintained for as long as 3 years. Keeping your hair as thick as possible over time would be a simple matter of repeating the injection, the timing of which will vary from patient to patient based on individual need and desire. Because pattern baldness is a dynamic process, periodic assessments are done to determine if any adjustments to your treatment protocol are needed to meet your expectations. PRP for ED (Erectile Dysfunction) Although each man’s experience may differ, most men report: increased erection and firmness, enhanced sensation and pleasure, possible improvement in urinary incontinence and prostate issues, possible enhanced length, girth and appearance, and reduce/remove plaque buildup in Peyronie’s Disease. After this procedure, the patient can immediately resume normal physical exercise and sexual activity. Because PRP is created directly from a patient’s own blood, neither allergic reactions nor rejection of the platelet cells can occur. This is a safe treatment that can be performed and completed in an office setting in approximately one hour from start to finish. Submitted by Henry C. Sobo, MD. Thomas John Comes to the Ridgefield Playhouse in January

By Diane Hayden, PhD

T

homas John is one of the most prestigious psychics in the world, with a documented history of extraordinary and authentic psychic readings. At age four, Thomas first discovered his divine abilities of clairaudience (hearing) and clairsentience (sensations). His family was astounded when young Thomas communicated with the spirit of his deceased grandfather and revealed the precise whereabouts of a lost family watch. Thomas bridges the gap between the tangible and intangible, providing a unique and mystical experience. Mystic events are those that which cannot be explained rationally or logically, often referred to as miracles. Divine communication with spirits provides insight into our higher selves and our relationship with the universe. Thomas accomplishes this by relaxing control of his conscious mind, which allows for external input from the beyond. By blending energies with the spirit, he experiences mystical voices, sounds, sensations, and emotions. Thomas can even accurately predict the future. While connection with a specific loved one is never guaranteed, Thomas acts as a link between yourself and your heavenly guides to deliver invaluable insight and solace. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Thomas John to talk about his gift and upcoming show at the Ridgefield Playhouse on January 13, 2019. VIP and General Tickets are available at https://ridgefieldplayhouse. org/events/thomas-john-the-seatbelt-psychic/

DH: What can people expect from attending your show? TJ: If people haven’t experienced a mediumship show I just ask that they come with an open mind and willingness to see what happens. I do some predictive trends for global events, but typically I get more guidance on present things for individuals. Areas of their life that need attention or work, something in your vibration that needs to be healed. DH: How did you discover you had this gift? TJ: I really feel that I was born with this ability – as a young child I could actually see the spirit world. My family was closed off to it initially but that didn’t affect me, I kept developing my gift. DH: Do you think everyone has the ability to be clairvoyant? TJ: Yes, absolutely. I think many people are born more open to seeing – and over time our parents and societal fear condition us to not develop that trait. It’s kind of like exercise - if you don’t work at it, it doesn’t work. DH: What is one of your favorite memories as a medium? TJ: Wow – well I’ve done over 200,000 readings so there are a lot. But the best ones definitely have to do with helping parents who have lost children, it’s an extremely moving and positive experience. Children who have passed tend to be strong spirits

and pretty intense – they really want to come through and validate their presence. I recently had a woman who came to my event and she was skeptical, but trying to be open. Her nephew died in a school shooting and you could see her body language change as the validations came through. You could see the relief and calmness as her anxiety subsided. DH: Why do you think some family members who have passed on don’t come through in readings? TJ: Well, I used to believe a reading was about the person coming in. But it’s really based on the spirit worlds’ need to connect. A spirit may not come through if there’s not much unfinished business. A spirit may not like certain formats, and many times they pick the medium they want to come through. I would tell you that who comes through is based on what you’re going through in your life at the time. Many times loved ones who die tragically or take their own life don’t come through until many years after their death because the people left behind aren’t ready to handle the truth of how they died. DH: How do we connect with our loved ones who have passed on our own? TJ: There’s many ways to connect with loved ones on your own. Look for signs because there are many after death communications. Try to work on your grief. Don’t ignore it, grief is normal. When you’re in deep grief, it’s not optimal for communicating with the spirit world as they are in a www.NaturalNutmeg.com

higher vibration state than us so it’s difficult to connect. Get into a place of peace and calm and you’ll have a much stronger connection. That’s why it’s best to wait a few months after a death for optimal communication. Continue to honor them in the physical world – talk to them like they’re there, write letters, make them part of your life still because they are. DH: How do we learn more about mediumship? TJ: There’s such a great body of research to learn about the afterlife. In fact, just studying and learning can put you in a sphere of availability to connect with loved ones. Some great resources are The Afterlife conference by Terry Daniels, The Afterlife Experiments by Gary Schwartz, www.neardeath.com. Also, mediumship and the afterlife community needs new voices – if anyone is ready to learn or has a book idea or experiences to share, I really encourage you to think about doing that.

Having Trouble Shedding Those Stubborn Pounds? By Alison Birks, MS, AHG, CNS, CDN

T

his year, you resolve to lose weight. You eliminate the junk food and hidden sugars from your diet. You start reading food labels. You switch to an all organic, plant-based eating style. You start exercising. You watch your portions and fill up on fiber-rich foods such as: fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Maybe instead you choose to go Paleo, and eat plenty of local, clean sources of protein like grass fed beef and pastured eggs. Yet, somehow you still can’t shed those stubborn pounds! If so, you may be struggling with weight loss resistance. Until the underlying factors which are preventing you from losing weight are properly addressed, even the best diets will fail. Numerous factors can interfere with the ability to lose weight and lower body fat. Medical factors, such as: hormone imbalances, unhealthy gut flora, food sensitivities, stress and toxin overload are common causes of weight loss resistance. Addressing these problems with your health care practitioner while shifting to a nutrient dense diet tailored to your specific needs is the first step. The use of heat therapies such as far infrared sauna is another valuable tool for addressing weight loss resistance and improving overall health. Hormones Weight loss will be difficult to achieve if thyroid hormones, insulin and cortisol levels are not optimal. Imbalances in reproductive hormones, such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone can also cause weight loss resistance. Your physician or other healthcare practitioner can order testing to determine if a hormone imbalance is present and if treatment is indicated.

Gut Flora

Food Sensitivities

New research on the human microbiome shows that the type of microflora in the gut can influence one’s ability to lose weight. Some microbes have an increased capacity to extract calories from food. Others have a role to play in mood, appetite and detoxification. Probiotic supplements, fermented foods and strategies to enhance digestive function can all be employed to shift the balance to a healthier population of gut microbes.

Stress reduction therapies such as yoga, deep breathing, massage and other mindfulness practices can lower the stress response, as can the use of botanicals such as adaptogenic herbs. Adaptogens are herbs which enable the body to better tolerate stressors of all kinds. They are nontoxic, normalizing and nonspecific in their ability to promote a better physiological response to stress. Adaptogens are best chosen according to their energetic properties and actions, with the help of an experienced herbalist.

Food Sensitivities An elimination diet which focuses on reducing the overall inflammatory load on the body can promote weight loss and enhance overall feelings of wellbeing. Here, commonly eaten foods such as gluten, dairy, corn, soy and sugar are removed from the diet for a period of time. This approach can uncover hidden food triggers which may be causing weight loss resistance as well as other symptoms, such as headaches, joint pain, fatigue and digestive discomfort.

Nutritional Supplements Nutraceuticals like those used in a structured detox program can enhance the body’s ability to remove stored toxins. A two to four-week cleanse which includes: supplemental fiber, a protein shake, probiotics, herbs and amino acids to enhance glutathione production, promote bile secretion and aid in the removal of toxins

via phase I and phase II detoxification in the liver is an incredible tool for addressing weight loss resistance. Far Infrared Sauna Heat therapy, such as the use of far infrared sauna can also promote detoxification and fat loss. Studies on far infrared sauna have shown that it improves cardiometabolic health, lowers blood pressure, reduces inflammation, increases the number of calories burned and removes stored toxins through the skin, such as heavy metals and fat soluble environmental contaminants. Multiple sessions are recommended to see a significant change. In 2015, the completion of a 20-year study in men found that increased frequency and duration of sauna use was associated with better cardiovascular health, a decreased number of deaths from cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. While this study looked at Finnish sauna, far infrared sauna would have similar if not better outcomes due to its deeper heat penetration. Heat therapy such as far infrared sauna may also enhance collagen production, which can improve the structure and look of the skin. Unlike other rapid weight loss programs and fad diets which can dehydrate the body and cause skin to sag and look older, a sensible weight loss plan which includes a safe, scientifically formulated detoxification program and far infrared therapy is an anti-aging investment. Giving Family Caregivers the Break They Deserve

By Neil Anand

I

t is estimated that nearly 40 million Americans care for an adult friend or relative every year, providing 37 billion hours of unpaid care. While caring for a loved one can be a meaningful and rewarding experience, it can be an emotionally and physically demanding job. Family caregivers often feel overstretched, especially when trying to balance their caregiving duties with a career, children and their personal lives. In fact, according to AARP, nearly 9 in 10 family caregivers said caring for a loved one was harder than they anticipated and more than half felt overwhelmed by the amount of care their loved one needs. This has been linked to their declining health as well as a negative impact on their careers. Respite Care Let’s face it — everyone needs a break sometimes. That’s where respite care comes in. Respite care provides, you, the family caregiver, time away from your caregiving responsibilities to rest and recharge. It’s a way to give yourself a much-needed break while still meeting the needs of your loved one. There are several different types of respite care available, including adult day care centers, residential facilities and in-home care. Home care agencies like ComForCare Home Care provide in-home care services. A professional caregiver comes to your loved one’s home, where they are most comfortable, and takes care of them like you would. At ComForCare Home Care, caregivers are available for a few hours a day up to 24/7, including holidays and even if you are just going on vacation for a short period of time. Home care helps with a wide variety of daily activities, including bathing and getting dressed, grocery shopping and meal preparation, transportation to doctor’s appointments and errands, light housekeeping and laundry, medication reminders, and sometimes most importantly – companionship. ComForCare Home Care works with families to develop individualized care plans, taking into account a person’s hobbies, skills and interests. The goal is to incorporate meaningful activities into daily routines. What To Do If You Are a First-Time Family Caregiver While some family caregivers gradually grow into their roles or are born into it, others can pinpoint the event that started their journey. If you recently became a family caregiver, you may feel challenged due to the changes in your relationship with your loved one. You may have to help your loved one bathe and dress or take medications. You may need to drive them to appointments or orchestrate their care from another state or country.

The following tips can help you oversee your loved one’s care and well-being, manage your own stress levels and better enjoy your time together. • Organize legal, personal and financial documents. In some situations, you may need to seek legal authority like Power of Attorney to do business on their behalf. • Research your options. For example, The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides eligible employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for their spouse, child or parent with a serious health condition. • Prepare the home in order to provide a safe living environment. Some minor household fixes might include removing trip hazards, such as rugs and snaking electrical cords, and increasing the brightness of bulbs or the amount of lighting. Pay special attention to the bathroom. According to the Centers of Disease Control and prevention, approximately 22 million Americans were injured in the bathroom, and the rate of injury increased with age. Specifically, Americans 65+ hurt themselves using the toilet and moving around the bath tub or shower. You can reduce fall risks and accidents by installing grab bars around the toilet and shower/ bath tub. • Enlist help and care for yourself. You cannot effectively take care of someone else if you do not take care of yourself first. Respite care provides family caregivers the opportunity to spend time with other friends or family members, run errands, get to the doctor or the gym, take a vacation, get a haircut or simply relax. This helps prevent what is known as “caregiver burnout”. To learn more about home care, visit ComForCare. com/FairfieldCT and call (203) 612-8966 for a no obligation consultation. Take The 31 Day De-Cluttering Challenge! By Regina Sanchez o you know what the “Health Epidemic of the 21st Century” is according to the World Health Organization? It is stress. We are in a health crisis because of the stress that so many individuals are under. Stress has such negative effects on our health and it is something that needs to be addressed if you are suffering from it and are on overload. Don’t just live with it. As I tell my clients, “Don’t let it be your friend.” Because your friend it is not. Sometimes we get so used to it that we think it’s part of life. We let our days be so busy that we are not paying attention to the body symptoms of stress. Then when we go to sleep at night and our body is at rest, it can’t be. The stress is still there and bubbling its ugly head. This is where insomnia can come into play.

D

Stress can be caused by a number of factors in our lives. But an interesting one is “clutter.” A study was done a few years ago by Southern California and UCLA Psychology Professor Rena Preetti. She found that women who lived in the midst of clutter have high cortisol levels. The interesting thing was the men that lived with them didn’t. Effects of Living With High Cortisol • Suppressed immunity • Hypertension • High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) 20

Natural Nutmeg - January/February 2019

• Insulin resistance • Metabolic syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes

To help you with some de-cluttering for the next 31 days, I have a challenge for you. Here is a list of 31 items you can probably remove from your home…quick and easily.

• Fat deposits on the face, neck, and belly

Let’s have a “31 Day De-Cluttering Challenge” for the Month of January 2019.

• Carbohydrate cravings

• Bone loss Many who realize that the clutter is affecting their lives and hence their health find it overwhelming to begin the process, let alone tackle it on their own. Others think it’s no big deal. But I tell them they are deceived. They don’t realize how the clutter is affecting them because I tell them it’s not like a truck drove up to their home one day and dumped all the clutter at once inside. It happened gradually. So gradually you “think” you have gotten used to it and it doesn’t bother you. But when I’ve begun a de-cluttering process with these clients, they are calling me at night telling me how happy they are and how wonderful it feels to be in that particular room without all the clutter. There is definitely a peace in that room. For some a big de-cluttering project is overwhelming for them. Or they just don’t have the time to tackle the massiveness of the project. No worries. You can begin the de-cluttering project with small baby steps. Then over time you’ll be amazed at what you’ve accomplished.

nflammation is a major component of life that helps us deal with things such as infections, injuries, or allergies. In all instances, our body is trying to fight off what it sees as a foreign invader. In some instances, like arthritis, our body mistakenly identifies our own cells as foreign. On the one hand this inflammation is necessary to help us heal and recover. On the other hand, when our immune system reacts to ourselves or becomes overactive it can lead to further issues and chronic diseases. One of these issues is weight gain and difficulty losing weight. How Does Inflammation Cause Weight Gain? Inflammation is your bodies’ response to something it sees as dangerous. When we are exposed to something our body sees as foreign, as in the case of venom from a bee sting, our immune system sees this invasion as dangerous and mounts a response. This response leads to an increase in circulation at the site of the sting, engorging our tissue with blood carrying our immune cells, the white blood cells, to detain and rid the body of the venom. There is also a release of histamine that promotes an increase in fluid retention in the area. This whole process is a type of reaction known as Type 1 hypersensitivity reaction or an acute allergy. Sometimes we will see such strong Type 1 reactions that lead to an

emergency situation called anaphylaxis. These are our nut allergies and seafood allergies. In this case, the antibody involved is IgE. There is another type of immune reaction that is less extreme in symptomology and affects us at a slower speed known as Type 3 or IgG antibody mediated response. This response can occur hours to days after the initial introduction of the foreign invader. Food sensitivities are an example of this type of reaction and may lead to vague symptoms of brain fog, bloating after eating or variable stool consistency, fatigue, flares in skin issues or body aches and pains and many more. All too often, it is also connected to weight gain and difficulty losing weight. With an increase in inflammation, there is an increase in water retention so some of the excess weight you may be carrying may also be fluid. Systemic inflammation leads to an increase in cortisol levels. Cortisol is an important hormone involved in helping our bodies regulate and lower inflammation as well as regulating our blood sugar levels, stress response, and management of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. When chronic inflammation occurs, the body ends up with chronically high levels of cortisol causing increased fat storage, increased hunger, higher blood sugar levels that over time causes decreased insulin sensitivity. All of which promote weight gain and difficulty shedding the pounds. How Do We Get Food Sensitivities?

Our gut is one of our major barriers to the outside world. It is made up of both beneficial bacteria (probiotics) and cells that link together in a tight network to prevent the contents of our digestion from crossing into our body. Our digestive system harbors a large portion of our immune system. Unfortunately, it can be injured from taking certain medications, GI infections, flora imbalances, the types of food we eat and lifestyle factors such as smoking or alcohol. When the flora and cells are injured, this barrier becomes weak allowing larger partially digested food particles to pass through. Since these food particles are not something our immune system recognizes it treats them as foreign. Over time, with repeated exposure, a food sensitivity is created and constant lowgrade inflammation occurs.

We're More Than Just Massage

What Can You Do? There are lab tests that can be done with your Naturopathic doctor to help you determine the level of inflammation in your body and what food allergies you may have. Once these foods have been identified, they can be pulled out of the diet to allow the body to heal and recover. Getting a wide range of nutrients during this time is important to continue decreasing inflammation and healing any digestive tract damage. For this reason, sometimes supplementation is a necessary addition to your plan to ensure that you get all the right vitamins and minerals, antioxidants, probiotics, omega 3’s and herbal support in your overall weight loss process.

Many times, dealing with food allergies can help in recovering from many other illnesses and disorders as well, such as autoimmune diseases, digestive complaints like irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, blood pressure, infertility, skin disorders like psoriasis, anxiety, sleep issues and even fatigue. So, if you’ve struggled with weight gain or have difficulty losing weight, it may be time to look into food sensitivities. Who knows what other benefits you may find along the way.

Arvigo Therapy® & Rainforest Remedies for Fertility Enhancement By Tonya Pasternak, ND and Becca Tornes-Baker, LMT

s with many things these days, what’s old is new again. Welcome to Arvigo Therapy® and Rainforest Remedies (Herbal Remedies). The Arvigo® Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy are founded in the ancient Mayan techniques of abdominal massage, which is an external, non-invasive manipulation that helps to reposition internal organs that have shifted, thereby restricting the flow of blood, lymph, nerve, and chi. The Arvigo® Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy address position and health of the pelvic and abdominal organs.

Dr. Rosita Arvigo learned the basis from which these techniques developed from her mentor, Don Elijio Panti, the great Maya Shaman of Belize, Central America, with whom she apprenticed for ten years. Dr. Arvigo also studied with Hortense Robinson, a traditional midwife and herbalist of Belize, who began delivering babies when she was only 13. These healers also taught her the properties and uses of Central American herbs. The following are some of the most common symptoms and conditions that Arvigo Therapy® and Rainforest Remedies may help address:

Natural Nutmeg - January/February 2019

• Digestive Disorders (Crohn’s, IBS, Constipation, Indigestion) • Urinary System Issues (incontinence, frequent urinary infections) • Fertility Enhancement • Menstrual Disorders • Menopause • Pelvic Organ Congestion (endometriosis, cysts, fibroids) • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome • Pelvic Organ Prolapse • Early Stages of BPH

• Prostatitis • Impotence, Erectile Dysfunction, Premature Ejaculation This article will focus on the use of Arvigo Therapy® and Rainforest Remedies as they pertain to female health, specifically infertility and its associated causes. Fertility Overview Female infertility can be caused by many factors. Hormonal conditions such as hypothyroidism or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) are causes that can be easily assessed through blood work. In addition to endocrine disorders, structural abnormalities are also a leading cause of infertility. Fibroids are masses found within the uterus. While benign in nature (noncancerous) they can prevent implantation. This means a woman's ovum can become fertilized and an embryo can start to develop as it travels down the fallopian tube; however, it is unable to burrow into the uterine lining to continue to grow and develop. In this situation, the pregnancy is halted very early on and the women may never know she was pregnant. Fibroids are relativity easy to assess via a pelvic or internal ultrasound. Another structural cause of infertility is endometriosis. This is a condition in which the tissue that typically makes up the uterine lining grows in other body regions. This can include in or around the fallopian

tubes, the ovaries, and even around the intestines. This can interfere with pregnancy by creating blockages that inhibit the ovum, sperm or embryo from getting to the proper location. Endometriosis can sometimes prevent ovulation if the tissue surrounds the ovaries. Typically, there are symptoms that point to endometriosis such as extreme pain during menses; however there is no quick and easy way to diagnoses this. Diagnosis depends on laparoscopic surgery in which the tissue can actually be visualized. In addition to laparoscopy and pelvic ultrasounds, a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is sometimes used to help workup structural causes of infertility. This is essentially an X-ray with contrast dye that shows the shape of the uterine cavity as well as determines the patency of the fallopian tubes. While all of the imaging of the reproductive organs are important, many women are left with reports stating everything is normal. This seems like a good thing; however, it can be very discouraging when no answers are found. It is in these situations that Arvigo Therapy® can be helpful. Often, these tests show that a woman’s uterus is displaced, tilting too far in one direction. Something as simple as having a uterus that bends or tilts too far in one direction can make it very difficult for the sperm to find the ovum, as well as restrict blood, lymph, and nerve flow because it is sitting on those structures. By encouraging realignment of the organs, proper blood, lymph, and nerve flow is optimized. New research is showing that Arvigo Therapy improves the quality and quantity of fertile cervical fluid. In addition,

research is showing that having adequate cervical fluid is more important for conception than the actual date of ovulation. Arvigo Therapy® is a gentle, relaxing, supportive modality that can support fertility challenges, and even works well in conjunction with IVF. Manual Technique In a hands-on Arvigo Therapy® session, you can expect: • A comprehensive review of your past and present healthcare needs, focusing on reproductive and digestive health • Upper and lower abdominal massage to help: • Align reproductive and abdominal organs to optimal position • Improve circulation to organs • Promote vital flow to support the body’s inherent healing capacity • Evaluation of and application of soft-tissue bodywork to improve alignment • Instruction in self-care massage to enhance your professional session • Possible recommendations of complementary modalities, including: • Faja (traditional lower abdominal support wrap) • Bajos (pelvic steam bath of the Maya) • Castor oil packs • Herbal tinctures

Rainforest Remedies (Herbal Remedies) The manual technique of Arvigo Therapy® is often accompanied by the use of Rainforest Remedies: traditional Mayan herbal medicine. This includes formulas to support blood sugar levels, blood pressure, digestive upset, male and female hormonal imbalances, and nervous system tension. As it pertains to female reproductive health, there is an amazing Rainforest remedy called Hortense formula, which is great for treating problematic fibroids. As mentioned earlier, uterine fibroids can contribute to infertility by impeding on crucial space in the womb. Hortense formula consists of some commonly known herbs such as hibiscus flowers, oregano and rosemary, as well as more traditional Mayan herbs such as billy webb bark and maguey silvestre. Together these herbs work to constrict the blood supply to fibroids which has been shown to decrease the size of the growth and in some cases get rid of it altogether. This herbal combination has additional actions also used for endometriosis, uterine polyps, and ovarian cysts. Using a combination of Arvigo Therapy® and herbal Rainforest Remedies can support you on your journey towards internal healing targeted at both digestive and reproductive health. Winning the Weight Loss Battle: Part 1 By Diane Bahr-Groth, CH, TFT-Adv

W

ell, it’s that special time of the year again when we contemplate the year past as well as the approaching future days and months ahead. The holidays are over and day to day life is beginning to return to normal. The seemingly endless celebrations began many weeks ago with Thanksgiving feasts at home with family, loved ones and friends. Invitations galore filled our calendars with parties and dinners and festive celebratory events as we merrily ate and drank our way into and beyond the New Year. As the holiday season comes to an end it is often time for personal reflection. Your New Year’s resolution may once again be vowing to gain control over your eating behavior and finally lose weight. You may be unhappy with your image in the mirror but still not able to find the ability to end the sabotaging, out of control behavior preventing you from losing that excess weight. It may feel difficult or even impossible to find the willpower needed to begin and follow a healthy eating plan to lose weight. Many people feel totally out of control. Cravings, emotional eating, portion sizes and unhealthy behaviors often get the best of us. We give in and fail again and again. The sabotaging behavior continues day after day despite recognizing what you need to do to make a positive change. Gain Control & Lose Weight Like most people, you probably know what to do to lose the weight. You may have the best of intentions to stop eating those sweets or starchy carbs and really begin that “diet” on Monday! We all know diets don’t really work. You know the right foods to eat…but something usually stops you from following through with the plan. Your motivation and willpower suddenly disappear! Sometimes it feels as though there is a good angel and bad angel on your shoulder and the bad angel is winning! Cravings, emotional eating, portion sizes and out of control behaviors often get the best of us… we give in and then we give up. There is good news for those who want to combat obesity, gain control and lose weight. Hypnosis is an easy, natural, relaxing and successful solution to lose weight without dieting. 26

Natural Nutmeg - January/February 2019

Hypnosis may be the solution for those in search of a natural and healthy method to lose their potentially unhealthy excess weight without the high cost, risks and side effects of invasive surgery. According to the data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death” with estimated annual medical costs of $147 billion in 2008. Facts and findings indicate that reducing obesity (BMI of 30+) indicate, “even a modest weight loss, such as 5 to 10% of your total body weight, is likely to produce health benefits, such as improvement in blood pressure, blood cholesterol and blood sugars.” Think Yourself Thin Imagine being able to end the weight loss sabotage and almost think yourself thin simply by closing your eyes and relaxing while listening to soft music and perhaps the gentle sound of ocean waves as a trained Hypnotist guides you into a beautiful, calming state of tranquility. With practically no effort at all you drift into a natural, dreamy, drowsy state of peaceful relaxation while your subconscious mind accepts the positive suggestions for the healthy changes you want to make. It may sound too good to be true, but hypnosis works. Hypnosis can naturally finally end the old sabotaging behavior and help your mind work for you instead of against you. Hypnosis has the ability to help you regain your willpower to eat consciously and healthfully so you can finally lose weight… without deprivation…without dieting. What is Hypnosis? It is a well-established fact that hypnosis, also known as therapeutic hypnosis, can be used as an effective tool for everything from weight loss and smoking cessation, behavior modification, success and motivation, healing and even pain control. Many other problems such as fears, phobias, pain, insomnia, poor study, memory or learning habits and self-esteem issues are commonly helped using hypnosis.

To some, the very word hypnosis still conjures up thoughts of creepy old castles, thunderstorms and helpless victims in a zombie-like trance. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. It is a well-established fact that hypnosis is widely recognized by scientists and researchers as a very safe, natural and enjoyable state of deep physical and emotional relaxation. Hypnosis may possibly even be as old as mankind itself. The old myths and misconceptions about hypnosis have given way to proven, scientifically-sound applications. The ethical use of hypnosis is seen in a variety of fields, including medicine, dentistry, law enforcement, professional sports, self-improvement, behavioral modification as well as education and can improve a wide spectrum of conditions, challenges and issues. Hypnosis: The Medicine of the Mind Today, hypnosis has gone mainstream. Over the years millions of people world-wide have benefited from its use. Men, women and children are using hypnosis regularly and their doctors are recommending it for help with many problems from arthritis to childbirth to stress reduction. Major hospitals across the U.S. are using hypnosis to speed surgical recovery, heal fractures weeks faster and assist in reducing pain and improve healing of burns. It can help to alleviate negative thoughts, feelings and beliefs as well eliminate the emotional and psychological blockages preventing one from accomplishing personal goals. Hypnosis is not “sleep” but simply a very natural, calm and tranquil state of conscious awareness. During a hypnosis session a trained hypnotist uses specific suggestions to guide you into a comfortable state of deep relaxation. Traditionally, while in this peaceful state, one becomes more focused and actually has a heightened sense of awareness. During hypnosis the natural endorphin and serotonin levels of the body are increased. As this occurs, the conscious portion of the mind, which is critical and analytical, is temporarily suspended or bypassed. The hypnotic induction simply helps the client to become more directed and relaxed thereby making the transition from conscious awareness to subconscious awareness. In this state, the subconscious mind can easily accept the suggestions for change to benefit the individual.

Are You an Emotional Eater? The subconscious mind is very much like a computer and, unfortunately, it may be running old or defective programs! Many of us have developed unhealthy relationships with food over the years. We eat when we’re sad, angry, lonely, stressed and even when we are happy. Many of us have developed the habit of overeating and using food to satisfy emotional issues that we may often confuse with our appetite. This habit can gain strength and power over the years to become an automatic response the subconscious uses to address any stressful situation or event. We may find ourselves overeating to satisfy our emotional “hunger” to feel better. We’ve learned to use food as a drug to modify our feelings and emotions. Consciously we try over and over again to stop that sabotaging behavior but fail miserably blaming ourselves for our lack of ability and willpower. We diet and deprive ourselves and become more and more unhappy. Many people “diet” themselves to weigh over 300 lbs. It’s not your fault. Studies have shown that the sub-conscious mind manages over 90% of our behaviors. It doesn’t even make sense that we can change something on a conscious level when the subconscious is in charge! It’s obvious that simply using willpower and motivation is just not enough. Therefore, if you want to change a habit or modify behavior it can naturally and easily be changed by using hypnosis. Next month we’ll focus on Traditional Therapeutic Hypnosis or the Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis Diane Bahr-Groth, CH, TFT-Adv, Director of Mind-Body Transformation Hypnosis Center specializes in fast and effective methods for weight loss, healthy eating, stress, fear and pain reduction, smoking cessation, success, motivation, sports performance as well as fear and phobia elimination for public speaking and other issues for adults as well as children. 5 Strategies For Losing Weight and Being Financially Fit

By Caroline Wetzel

T

his year is your year. Now is your opportunity to acknowledge how satisfied you are with your personal finances and take yourself to the next level of financial fitness. Just as you take great care with your emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical health, this is your moment to tend to your financial health. How do you even begin? Start with what you know and what you are reading about in this issue of Natural Nutmeg: weight loss. Many of the same attitudes, behaviors, and activities that enable you to lose weight and become healthy physically can be applied to your personal finances to help you become more healthy financially.

I can say this from both personal and professional experience. You see, I lost 50 pounds through specific changes I made in my own life. And I have obtained a level of financial wellness and support my own clients daily in doing the same as a Certified Financial PlannerTM and Private Wealth Advisor. Start with a Vision Before I lost all that weight, life was tough: my clothes didn’t fit, I had no energy, and I felt incredibly uncomfortable socially. I avoided having pictures taken of me whenever possible and was deeply saddened one day when I saw that in a photo of a pregnant friend and me, I who was not pregnant looked ready to give birth! Something had to change. After I dried my tears I set my sights forward. I reframed how I thought of myself and envisioned being a physically fit, active, fun-loving woman who felt comfortable in 28

Natural Nutmeg - January/February 2019

her own body. That vision grounded me and kept me focused on the person I aspired to become in time through changes in eating, exercising, and other behaviors. I remember vividly the first time I had a vision for my own financial future. I was an 18-year-old freshman in college. In my public speaking course, a classmate delivered a presentation on compound interest and saving for retirement. He explained that the earlier you save and the more often, the more time you had to potentially make money on your savings before you had to use the money. I promised myself at the end of that class that no matter what I earned, I would always save some portion of it. And I retain that savings-oriented vision and approach to finances even today. Follow an Integrated, Holistic Approach For me, losing weight was more than just eating fewer calories than I exerted. I had to apply a holistic, integrated approach to how I obtained, prepared, consumed, and burned off the food I put into my body. From preparing more food at home using minimally processed ingredients, to taking my meals to work, to exercising at least 4 times a week, I had to incorporate many dimensions to lose the weight and keep it off. Similarly, I learned as a newlywed that saving and investing alone wouldn’t make me financially well. In my case, I needed to buy the right kind of life insurance to help take care of the mortgage my husband and I assumed as new homeowners. And I discovered as my husband and I began to look across our previously separate financial lives

that there were different kinds of debt that people have and, as a result, various strategies for both carrying and paying off that debt. And I learned from the untimely early deaths of people important to us that it was critical that my husband and I incorporate estate planning into our financial wellness, even if we weren’t rich and didn’t have children. We needed to ensure that the assets we were building as a team during life would be distributed as we wished at death, especially in case we both died at the same time. Monitor Your Progress Using a Variety of Data Monitoring my progress losing weight meant more than reviewing what the numbers on my scale showed each week. I monitored my blood sugar levels at regular intervals. Trainers provided me workout routines to follow and I reported both what I completed and how I felt doing it. And at the gym I checked a gadget every month to see how my portion of body fat to muscle changed over time. As I lost weight and gained muscle, I felt less lethargic and more energetic. And I noticed that slowly, in time, I enjoyed being social again and not only hid less often from friends’ cameras but actually jumped into spontaneous silly poses when I felt like it. In the same way, becoming financially well with my husband has included reviewing both qualitative and quantitative inputs. We developed a financial plan and have been reviewing it annually for years. In between reviews, we strive as a team to con-

tinuously save more and spend less. And to check our progress on this we check out our credit card statements and review our savings and investment accounts not only for how they are at specific points in time, but how they have trended over time. After 16 years of marriage, we still experience great joy when our savings and investment account balances are up and relief when our expenses are generally as expected when no major life surprises hit. Make Adjustments Along the Way In order to lose weight and keep it off, I have had to continuously adjust my actions. I eat different foods in light of my dynamic metabolism and as my metabolism changes with my age. When my weight loss goal was to be a physically fit, active, and funloving woman comfortable in my own skin I followed different exercise regimen than what I do today, now that I have achieved that original goal and want a stronger core, greater muscle tone, and increased flexibility and enhanced agility. In the same way, sustaining financial wellness is a dynamic process requiring ongoing refinement. As life changed, our financial plan and strategies changed. We adjusted savings, and spending habits to support me leaving a corporate job with global responsibilities and a predictable base salary with bonus potential and starting a second career where my compensation depends on clients valuing the services I offer them, as evidenced through their feebased payments. And since financial wellness goes beyond money management and includes debt management and insurance, when interest rates lowered, we refinanced our mortgage. We also regularly review both our beneficiaries on our financial accounts and double check that our wills, powers of attorney, and medical directives continue to be relevant. Engaging Others for Help I did not lose weight on my own. I had the support of a loyal husband who was open to buying, preparing, and eating new foods right along with me. At different points in my weight loss journey different specialists offered me expert guidance, from which combination of foods to eat to what vitamins and supplements to take, to what kind of exercise was appropriate given my body type and physical limitations. Effectively, I had a team of trained professionals providing me information and advice that I could use in my unique situation to achieve my weight loss dreams.

In the same way, my husband and I have utilized different resources over time to attain and sustain our financial fitness. Our financial plan changed from goals we’d talk about over Chinese takeout as newlyweds to hand written lists of what we wanted posted on the refrigerator to an Excel file my Engineer husband retained on his computer to now a comprehensive output from sophisticated financial planning software that helps us understand where we are today and helps us make projections around our future. When we determined we no longer wanted to prepare our own taxes, we engaged a CPA who had been referred to us by someone we trusted. As we built up our savings and began investing more, we began working with a financial advisor who was recommended to us by someone we trusted. And as the financial industry changed and our own needs changed, we ultimately decided to have me as a Certified Financial PlannerTM and Private Wealth Advisor manage our financial plan and investments with the team of professionals I both work with and trust. Physical and Financial Fitness While we could go on further about the parallels between losing weight and financial fitness, I hope that a few key points are clear. Similar to losing weight, when it comes to your finances you have the capacity to envision and realize the future you dream. No matter where you are today on your journey, when you allow yourself the freedom to create, own, and continuously adjust your savings, spending and investment behaviors in light of life’s circumstances, you can experience financial wellness and financial fitness. The Five Crucial Components for Successful & Lasting Weight Release By Lisa Zaccheo, MA, BCH, BC

W

hy did I use the word “release” instead of “loss”? Because subconsciously you’re trained to find whatever you lose – weight included. How many times have you lost weight, only to find it again? What you’re aiming for is permanent weight release, so let’s talk about the five crucial components for your success.

for granted, but without it you can’t do what you want and need to do. So, don’t think about the short game of releasing weight, think of it as a game you’re going to be playing for the rest of your life, releasing the weight, keeping the weight off and continuing to refine your health and strength so you can live life fully vs. living life in the doctor’s office.

Maybe you’re expecting specific diet or nutritional advice, but what you’re going to get here is even more important because your mental diet is as, if not more, important than your physical diet, and the right mindset can support whichever nutritional plan is the best fit for you. Yes, after 17 years of helping release weight, I have some opinions about the various different options that are out there and are happy to share those with you, but I also honor the fact that you know yourself better than I know you and am happy to support whichever plan you feel is going to be your best fit. That’s one of the many beauties of hypnosis.

Crucial Component Number 2: Identify Its Purpose

Crucial Component Number 1: Understanding That Health Is Not a Short Game It’s not something that’s going to last 6, 8, or even 12 weeks. Health is a life-long game and you need to wrap your mind around that truth. Releasing the weight is only half the challenge, keeping it off is equally important. Your health is your number one most valuable asset. It’s something that too many of us take 30

Natural Nutmeg - January/February 2019

For most, excess weight serves a purpose, and until you understand what that purpose is, the weight will keep coming back. Two common purposes that your mind believes excess weight serves are protection and punishment. Protection from unwanted attention, advances or hurt, and punishment for past mistakes. You’re probably aware that there is a correlation between sexual abuse and excess weight, so for many, weight serves the purpose of helping us become invisible and from the mind’s perspective “safe”. For others, the body puts on weight to create a barrier or buffer from other people’s harmful words or energy. To protect from hurt. Not that this works, and in fact the weight creates its own painful feelings and experiences, but without help, our minds can’t think of a better option.

Did you know there was a correlation between abortion and excess weight? Abortion is something that women, and men, punish themselves for, and weight is one of the classic ways to exact that punishment. We punish ourselves with weight for other life mistakes as well, or for simply not being perfect or “good enough”. I’ll go out on a limb and say that this last one is what most of my weight release clients struggle with. It’s very difficult for your body to present as “good enough” when inside you believe you’re not, so that’s one of the first places we focus the work – building self-confidence, self-esteem and body respect. Eating junk food is a classic sign of disrespect and your body deserves better. Once you really know that, by nature you’ll make healthier choices. Crucial Component Number 3: Disconnect the Connections Your mind started forming connections to food when you were just an infant being breast or bottle fed by mom. Food = love, food = comfort, food = attention, food = safety & security, food = happiness. Depending on how you were raised more and more connections formed over time. Food = scarce, food = a reward, food = celebration, food = family, food = company and entertainment. Connection after connection formed until food became connected to everything – so anytime we need love, or company, or comfort or reward, we turn to food. What we don’t realize is that none of those connections are true - none of those feelings came from food – they came from the people who where there when we were eating! Food is simply FUEL for our bodies and until we understand our unique connections around food and disconnect them, we will continue to be drawn to food for the wrong reasons. Fortunately, your subconscious mind can easily identify and disconnect the connections your mind has made around food and free you to make conscious and healthy choices instead of repeating those unhealthy choices over and over.

Crucial Component Number 4: Identify Your Emotional Drivers We all experience a wide range of emotions every day. As a society, we’ve never been taught the purpose of our emotions or how to deal with them. So, our natural tendency is to try to stuff them down or distract ourselves away from them. And, because of all the connections our minds have formed around food over time - because we really think its comfort, www.NaturalNutmeg.com

or company or happiness - we try to use food to serve the purpose of stuffing, numbing or distracting. And yes, it may appear to work temporarily, but what it’s really doing is creating more of the very emotions we’re trying not to feel, and increasing the size of the old emotional reservoir that we need to hold at bay. It’s a vicious cycle that causes us to eat far beyond our bodies’ needs for fuel. If you think about food as fuel for your body like gasoline for your car – if your car has engine trouble you’re not going to open the hood and douse the engine with gas, nor will you stop at the gas station when your tank is still three-quarters full, or fill it beyond capacity. We wouldn’t consider doing any of that with the vehicle we drive but we do it all the time to the vehicle we live in. Crucial Component Number 5: Positive Suggestions Whether you realize it or not, you’re in constant dialog with yourself. And everything you say to yourself, (you know those not so nice words that you put at the end of “I am”), are literally suggestions, or marching orders, that you’re giving to your subconscious mind. Suggestions your subconscious mind is taking literally and acting upon. You’ll be amazed at what you hear when you start listening. I challenge you to write out your self-talk as you become aware of it, and when you look at it in black and white you’ll realize that it’s not pretty. In fact, they are most likely things that you’d never dream of saying to anyone else. Self-talk is so important because what we say to ourselves at the conscious level our subconscious mind takes literally. It becomes our self-instruction and very often we’re giving our mind the wrong instructions. Let’s take the word “need”. How many times have you said to yourself, “I need this chocolate? I need this drink, this dessert, this bread, this pasta, this ________.” When in essence you don’t need it – you just want it. If you tell yourself you need something over and over again you begin to believe it’s true. Then the connection or draw towards that food will get stronger instead of weaker, which make it harder to make healthy choices. At those moments try being honest with yourself. “I want this because I feel I deserve a reward.” “I want this because I’m bored or lonely.” Or whatever the truth is in that moment. That honesty will help you understand how you’re using food and will allow you to find other, healthier things to address your emotional need.

How many times have you told yourself “I’m fat”, “I have big hips”, “I’m never going to look like that”? Every time you say those things to yourself your subconscious mind takes you literally and works to achieve those instructions instead of what you want which is fit, strong and healthy. Or that famous “I’ll start tomorrow”, when you know that the tomorrows will continue to come and go. Instead pick a single start date and hold yourself to it. So, be aware and be careful of how you talk to and about yourself. Hypnosis, which is a conversation with your subconscious mind, will allow you to become fully aware of the purpose your mind thinks your excess weight is serving, the specific connections your mind has made around food. It will help you literally drain your old emotional reservoir which equals less triggering and more control and will help you become aware of and shift your negative, demotivating self-talk to positive propelling self-talk. It will help you create healthy change in all these areas which will translate to a healthy relationship with food and a healthy body. Here is an inspiring story from a former client: “23 pounds and counting… And the best part is I don’t crave anything!! I have totally disconnected from junk food. If it’s not good fuel for the engine, it doesn’t go in the tank. I can’t thank you enough for your advice and wisdom. I tell everyone about you and hopefully they will take the step too.” - John from Simsbury Lisa Zaccheo, MA, BCH, BC, is the owner, lead hypnotist and hypnosis instructor at Mind Matters Hypnosis Centers in Avon, Glastonbury, and Guilford, CT. Is Ketogenic Therapy Right For You?

By Erika Dworkin, Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition® "Please understand that mitochondrial and metabolic health is an emerging discipline and only a handful of researchers and even fewer practicing physicians are actively involved in its study. But I firmly believe that at some point in the future, metabolic therapy will be accepted as the standard of care not only for cancer but for most chronic diseases..."

A

~ Joseph Mercola, DO, Fat for Fuel: A Revolutionary Diet to Combat Cancer, Boost Brain Power, and Increase Your Energy (2017)

re you searching for a new, natural way to address a serious chronic health condition? Do you want to optimize your health in order to slow the aging process? While conventional “dieting” generally does not work, cutting-edge science is repeatedly proving that ketogenic therapy (KT), which Joseph Mercola, DO refers to as mitochondrial metabolic therapy, or MMT can be an effective approach to reversing disease and supporting health span and longevity. Since what is more commonly referred to as a “ketogenic diet” is not for everyone, it is important to understand how it works, and what is required to sustain ketogenesis. This evidence-based article aims to simplify some of the many complexities of KT. A patient in health crisis who wishes to try KT should ideally obtain the guidance and monitoring of a holistic practitioner. KT Basics KT, which mimics the effects of fasting, uses quality fats in food (70-90% of daily calories) as medicine, and calls for adequate but reduced protein intake (.8-1 gram for each kilogram of lean body mass), and extremely reduced intake of net carbohydrates (total carbs - dietary fiber = maximum 50 grams/day net carbs, or 4-10% of daily calories). It is based on the idea that carbohydrates, which the body converts to glucose, are a dirty fuel source for mitochondria (cellular powerhouses that produce energy from the combination of inhaled oxygen and consumed fats and sugars). KT advocates maintain that consumption of healthy fats optimizes the ability of mitochondria to generate ketones, an alternate clean fuel (which can also derive from stored body fat) which, with low glucose levels, yields fewer free radicals and less oxidative 34

Natural Nutmeg - January/February 2019

damage to cells and their mitochondria. Scientific evidence has, in fact, proven that the carbohydrate-rich standard American diet is linked to many chronic diseases, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Benefits of Ketones The body produces ketones when its supply of dietary carbohydrates drops or disappears, particularly during fasting. In addition to the benefits previously mentioned, ketone therapy: (1) combats cancer by decreasing the availability of sugar to cancer cells and reducing highly unstable reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are mainly produced within the mitochondria and form cell-damaging free radicals; (2) reduces inflammation; (3) inhibits the mTOR molecular signaling pathway which, when stimulated in the presence of disease, reduces health span and longevity; (4) allows the simultaneous consumption of less protein with preservation and building of muscle mass because ketones structurally resemble branched chain amino acids (BCAAs), some of the building blocks of protein [excess protein (a) converts to sugar; (b) is stored as fat, and (c) like carbohydrates, activates mTOR, thereby suppressing most cellular and mitochondrial repair and regeneration]; (5) protects brain cells from damage caused by hydrogen peroxide (common in Alzheimer’s/dementia patients), especially when iron levels are too high (ideal stored iron/ferritin level range = 40-60 ng/mL); (6) increases the number of mitochondria, and produces a steady energy supply that does not depend on immediate food intake; and (7) may elevate mood. Which Fats & Foods While there are five versions of KT diets, each is based on the idea that all fats are not created equal. Conventional refined/hydrogenated vegetable and nut oils (known as polyunsaturated fatty acids, or PUFAs), are toxic to the body since they contain pesticides/herbicides and solvents, and are highly vulnerable to free radical attack. When cell membranes incorporate the damaged PUFA molecules, cells become prone to health-compromising oxidation, which in turn causes chronic inflammation and clogging of the arteries. In his book Fat for Fuel, Mercola recommends monounsaturated, omega-3 and saturated fats (long demonized by conventional

medicine and governmental public health agencies). He emphasizes that scientific research has shown that saturated fats: (1) raise the level of benign large, fluffy LDL and HDL molecules, (but refined sugar/carbs increase health-compromising small, dense LDL molecules); (2) provide optimal brain fuel and important building blocks for cell membranes and hormones; (3) modify gene regulation and help prevent cancer (butyric acid); (4) increase mineral absorption (including calcium), carry fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, and promote conversion of carotenoids into vitamin A; (5) help combat viruses (caprylic acid); and (6) provide greater satiety than carbs and protein. KT emphasizes concentrating these healthy fats and high-fat foods in the diet: (1) high-fat dairy products (highly controversial since dairy products are well-known to promote inflammation) ; (2) nuts and seeds (the only permitted source of PUFAs); (3) avocados; (4) 100% pure, organic, extra virgin olive oil and olives; (5) coconut oil (controversial); (6) MCT oil (a more concentrated source of medium chain triglycerides than coconut oil); (7) cocoa butter; (8) raw, organic, grass-fed butter/ghee; (9) organic lard/tallow; and (10) other saturated animal fats (such as duck fat). Some other KT-friendly foods include: (1) many vegetables, including cruciferous, salad greens, celery, and cucumbers; (2) limited amounts of fruits, such as berries and grapefruit; (3) a range of proteins, including AGA-certified grass-fed beef, pork, lamb, shellfish (all four are controversial), poultry, wild-caught fish, and organic eggs; and (4) certain sweeteners, such as stevia, monk fruit, and xylitol/erythritol (controversial). for every cell. The neuron-rich brain uses one-half of all the glucose energy in the body. When the brain lacks sufficient glucose, its chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) are not produced and communication between neurons breaks down. Recent research has indicated that neurons deprived of glucose due to insulin resistance could trigger AD. In her three books, Mary Newport, MD, addresses the positive impact of ketones on Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other diseases (see coconutketones. com). She maintains that studies prove that the areas of the brain affected by AD can use ketones as an alternative energy even when it cannot use glucose. She further asserts that MCT oil could help prevent or delay the onset of AD. In the journal of the Alzheimer’s Association (2015), she reported in her 20-month ketone study that the single patient observed (her 63-year-old husband) greatly improved in mood, affect, self-care, and cognitive and daily activity performance. 2. Cancer: Emerging scientific evidence shows that cancer develops from

impaired cellular energy metabolism due to defects in mitochondrial DNA or membranes. Since nearly all cancer cells depend on the processing of glucose, and some cancers cannot metabolize ketones, the rationale is that KT starves cancer cells of energy but promotes survival of normal cells that adapt to using ketones for energy. Cancer growth is further inhibited by the resulting reduced levels of insulin and insulin-like growth factor, both of which cause cancer cells to multiply. Although animal research has shown that KT improves colon, prostate, and brain cancer, more studies are needed to establish it as a consistently valid approach for cancer patients. 3. Insulin Sensitivity & Diabetes (Type 2): Ongoing high intake of sugar and carbohydrates can result in high blood glucose levels and insulin resistance, which can cause obesity and related health problems. Since KT excludes foods that the body readily converts to glucose, it lowers glucose and insulin levels. By giving insulin receptors a rest, this process increases insulin receptor sensitivity.

4. Sports Performance: Even thin athletes store far more energy as fat than as carbohydrate (glycogen). KT advocates maintain that it can help athletes avoid “hitting the wall” when their glycogen supply is depleted. 5. Weight Loss/Obesity: Using glucose for fuel inhibits the body’s ability to access and burn fat. Also, though the body stores excess glucose as fat, it excretes in urine any ketones that cells do not use. KT uses food to curb appetite and change levels of weight-influencing hormones (including insulin and leptin, which inhibits hunger) so that the body burns fat rather than stores it. As Ron Rosedale, MD, explains, “You eat today to control the hormones that will tell your cells what to eat tomorrow.” Some Disadvantages of KT Although KT is cutting-edge and provides a potentially hopeful approach to addressing weight loss and certain diseases, it does have these drawbacks: (1) requires unwaivering commitment –replacement of glucose with ketones for energy can take several days or weeks; (2) requires nutritional supplementation –[calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, vitamin B6, electrolytes, digestive enzymes and ox bile, greens powder, fish oil, and potassium citrate (to address the increased risk of kidney stones)]; (3) may cause leaky gut, and thereby induce chronic intestinal inflammation; (4) has potential transition side effects (“keto flu”), such as nausea, fatigue, brain fog, constipation, and muscle aches/cramps; (5) requires multiple supplies and attention to many details (glucose and ketone monitoring devices, lancets, digital food scale); and (6) requires some type of fasting (Mercola recommends so-called Peak Fasting, which calls for not eating 13-18 hours of each day). While many of the guiding principles of KT promote wellness, a full-blown ketogenic diet should be adopted with caution and input from a holistic KT specialist.

Monetize Your Mission …Through Marketing Your Solutions By Robin Clare, MBA ew Year’s resolutions come in all forms...from losing weight to finally having a profit in your holistic business. Customize first...then Monetize If this is the year that you truly (not just casually) desire to finally be profitable in your business, then there are critical points you must address. You need to Customize Your Mission before you can Monetize Your Mission. Stating the obvious: you are the ONLY one who can manifest abundance in your own small business. There is no corporate entity writing you a paycheck or covering your benefits. Therefore, before you can monetize your mission, you must be very clear on the following Customize Your Mission topics. 1. What is your Soul Mission? In other words, what did your Soul come here to learn? Ask yourself: Over the course of your life, what unique experiences and education have shaped you into who you are today? When you take your Soul directed wisdom and teach others through service and leadership you align with your Soul Mission. This creates a level of excitement (or resonance) in your vibration that attracts in ideal clients and customers. 2. What are your stumbling blocks to success? Everyone experiences success blocks, like not feeling good enough or comparing ourselves to others or perhaps even holding regrets about leaving your daily-grind/ bread-and-butter job. The Universe cannot provide you with financial flow if you are not maintaining a positive vibration aligned

with receiving and allowing. Ask yourself: What are the negative thoughts and beliefs which have led you to actions which have lowered your energetic vibration? 3. Are you an Ambassador for your work? When a prospective client or customer looks at you – do they say, “I’ll have what she’s having?” It is important to be a living testament to the positive impacts of your products and services. Your clients want to see that you not only talk the talk but walk the walk! For example, in my coaching practice, if I momentarily lapse into not holding high standards with impeccable integrity for my own success, in those moments, I find that the clients I want to attract (ones who desire true success) can’t vibrationally find me. BERNIE

By Bernie Siegel, MD

O

Living in the Moment

ne of the questions I love to ask people is, ‘What is the best day of your life?’ I get many answers related to pleasant days people remember like the day their child was born or they won an expensive prize. One day at the bank I asked the teller that question and her answer was rejected by someone in the bank who yelled, “Wrong.” The teller wanted to know why her answer was wrong and the response was, “Because today is the best day of your life.” The truth is today is the only day you have and what you decide to do with it is the issue. We can whine and make excuses or we can appreciate the moment. I have discussed attitudes and they are ultimately the last thing that we are capable of creating. When we are unable to be creative or even experience things due to physical problems we still can have an attitude which creates the day we are experiencing. So, a blind woman can say, “What a beautiful place.” And when asked, “How can you say that when you are blind and can’t see anything?” She responds, “I have a choice as to what I see.” As do we all. We can blame our past and the people in it. We can blame those presently in our lives for ruining it or we can take responsibility for the day and enjoy it because it is the only day we have. Since I know I am mortal and my time is limited I don’t give my power away to others and let them decide if I am going to have a nice day. I spend a portion of each day examining what I am grateful for. I also confess my weaknesses and imperfections and pray for those I love and care about and for my needs too. I have learned that when I transcend material desires and pray for the ability to be a divine messenger my day is changed. Do you buy that package and are you willing to live that message today? If you are it will always be the best day of your life. If you are waiting until you get what you want, then today will never become the best day of your life. And you will lose your life by letting others decide how you are to serve the world. 42

Natural Nutmeg - January/February 2019

Here are some exercises to make today the best day of your life: 1. What would it take to make today your rebirthday? 2. Decide what you will see today before you get out of bed and search until you find it. 3. What can I pray for, for you today? Does your answer transcend personal desires? 4. Who has decided how you are to serve the world? You or other authorities in your life? 5. Decide whether to make today the best day of your life by changing your life or changing your attitude. The choice is yours. Both solutions work. For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel-or Bernie, as he prefers to be called-needs no introduction. He has touched many lives all over the Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. Read Bernie’s regular blog posts on his website where you will also find his books, articles, and CDs: http://www.berniesiegelmd.com. He is the Co-Academic Director of the Integrative Health and Healing M.A. Program at The Graduate Institute, Bethany, CT Bernie currently holds a cancer support group the second and fourth Tuesday afternoons of the month 1:30-3:30PM at Coachman’s Square at 21 Bradley Road, Woodbridge. If interested contact Lucille Ranciato: lranciato2@yahoo.com 203 288 2839; or Bernie: bugsyssiegel@sbcglobal.net. You can find Bernie’s books ad CDs at Wisdom of the Ages in Simsbury, Ct.
