elcome to 2021! I can’t think of a time in the past when we have all looked forward to a new year with such anticipation and been so ready to say goodbye to the past. We’ve suffered a lot of loss and pain in dealing with things like the death of a family member or close friend, separation from friends and family, businesses shut down or permanently closed, cancelled events like weddings and graduations and more. It can sometimes seem like it will never end. It’s hard to stay positive and hope for a new beginning. But it will end and we will see better days. I know that at the core of my being. Being the eternal optimist, I knew that this publisher letter would still be about hope and inspiration to help you shift any negative perspective to a positive one for 2021. This year should be no different, so here’s what I’m asking you to do! I love to start a new year by taking some time to acknowledge everything I accomplished in the past year and celebrate my “wins”! It may be harder this year to “see” the positive things that happened in 2020, but it may be more important to do that than any other year. I spend the last week of December and first week of January to thoughtfully examine where I am in my life currently and more importantly, am I still passionate about it. Here are the questions I ask myself and hope that you will take some time to as well: What if I had only one year to live? What would I do? What places would I visit? Who would I spend my time with? How many of you have contemplated these questions? I mean seriously contemplated to the point that you have identified all of the things that you are most passionate about and maybe even created a “100 Things to Do Before I Die” list. In our crazy, busy, jam-packed lives many of us are just going through the motions. We work because we have to, not because we’re passionate about our job. We stay in a relationship because it’s comfortable and we’re afraid to leave because there might not be anything better out there. We have a family because that’s what you do after you go to college, get a job and get married. But now we have no time for ourselves. We go to church or religious service because we feel guilty if we don’t, but we really don’t have a spiritual practice. We go to the gym and get on the same treadmill or elliptical machine a few days a week and suffer through the same boring, monotonous exercise routine and our fitness never seems to change. Does any of this sound familiar? If so, you’ve lost your passion and you need to get it back, NOW! Far too many people go through life without making any effort to truly live passionately…to get that fire in their soul for enjoying life and living it to the fullest. The worst tragedy in the world is the person who has lost his passion. How do you get your passion back? Spend a weekend, a month, a year identifying what you love and do it. Here’s how: 1. List 3 times in your life when you were excited and passionate about what you were doing in your career or personal life. What commonalities can you draw from the times you were most passionate? 2. Make a list of what you would do if you only had one year to live. 3. From your one year to live list, take time to explore some of your greatest passions. My greatest hope for you is that you will live completely, fearlessly, and passionately. Wishing you health and happiness

Massage Therapy Boosts Your Immune System
R
esearch strongly suggests that massage therapy boosts your immune system by increasing white blood cell count, an added bonus to a relaxing or pain-relieving massage session. Your health and safety is of great importance to Abundant Health Massage Therapy & Wellness. They are complying with CT state mandates in regards to safety protocols. In addition, they are surpassing those protocols with the following: • New air purifier with HEPA filter and UVC light remains on before, during, and after all massage sessions. • New UVC germicidal light is being used in between client sessions to sterilize every surface inside the massage room. • Massage appointments are spaced out, so there is plenty of time for thorough disinfection. This also eliminates the chance of clients encountering other clients entering/exiting the office, and there is no waiting in the waiting room.
Thea Litsios, Certified Life Coach and Hypnotist, has successfully assisted individuals to quit smoking. In her previous class, a smoker for 40 years was able to finally quit smoking. To assist you on this journey you will get the support of a community of other participants in the program, so you will not be walking this road alone. Included in this program will be one 30-minute individual hypnosis session where you will get 1:1 attention and an individualized hypnotic recording in the final week of the program. Are you ready for a change in your life but you feel as if there is just this one habit that is holding you back? If you could just master this one aspect of your life, then all the other things would seem doable? If that’s how you are feeling then this program is for you. Conducted via Zoom starting Thursday, January 7th, 7 - 8 pm ET for 4 consecutive weeks (1/14, 1/21, & 1/28) plus one 30-minute personal hypnosis session. Students will be hypnotized in class and will receive a recording of each week’s hypnosis segment. Start your new year right with the commitment to quit smoking. Go to thealitsios.com/programs/p/smoking-cessation-program and register. Class size limited. Thea is a certified Life Coach and Hypnotist. For more information go to thealitsios.com.

Low Dose Immunotherapy: Bringing Back a Healthy Life
W
hat happens when our immune system cannot tolerate what exists in our environment, whether it is externally in our surroundings or internally within our bodies? We begin to develop symptoms, ranging from sneezing, to difficulty breathing, to chronic fatigue and pain. Whether the symptoms are acute or chronic they affect our daily lives, and, at times, can persist for a number of years and become debilitating. For some, prescriptive medications and herbal therapies have offered some relief, however, may not have provided people with the long-term relief they need where they are not constantly taking medications on a daily basis. Low dose immunotherapy is the solution. Low dose immunotherapy (LDI) is a form of immunotherapy that consists of dilute solutions of antigens enhanced by a small amount of beta glucuronidase. LDI stimulates T regulatory cells while suppressing other types of T cells that are on overdrive and causing symptoms that an individual is experiencing. This form of immunotherapy is ultimately restoring immune tolerance and alleviating symptoms that a patient is experiencing.

Low dose immunotherapy has been used very successfully since the ‘60s for treating multiple conditions, including autoimmune disorders, Lyme and co-infections, autism, PANDAS, gastrointestinal conditions, food and environmental allergies, skin conditions and more. The dose prescribed for an individual is very specific and varies from person to person and is administered sublingually. Once a dose is found to provide a relief in symptoms it is given every 7 weeks. Symptoms decrease gradually over time, and dosing becomes every few months, then every year. Eventually a patient is no longer in need of it. If a patient experiences any symptoms prior to 7 weeks, a lower dose can be given to help alleviate their symptoms prior to 7 weeks. Low dose immunotherapy is a safe and effective treatment that centers on re-establishing the health of an individual and bringing back a true quality of life. Dr. Veena Verma-Dzik, ND, FIAMA, is a board-certified Naturopathic Physician and certified medical acupuncturist who is highly experienced in treating acute and chronic health conditions. Her specialties include Lyme disease, women’s health, ADD/ ADHD, GI conditions, mood imbalances, allergies, and fatigue. Each patient she sees receives personalized, individual care involving research-based treatments and therapies from her own clinical experience and success. The therapies she prescribes include herbal medicine, nutritional therapeutics, homeopathic medicine, low dose immunotherapy, and acupuncture. She works collaboratively with practitioners and therapists in her office at Insight Counseling in Ridgefield, CT. Vicki Sara Blumberg, M.D., is board certified in Internal Medicine and has over 35 years of experience. She practices Low Dose Immunotherapy, which induces immune tolerance to the allergens or microbial invaders which each individual person may be inappropriately overreacting to. This eliminates symptoms using the body’s own mechanisms of healing, successfully treating allergic, autoimmune, and other chronic diseases such as Lyme disease. 203.431.9726 email:info@insightcounselingllc.com, website:insightcounselingllc.com. Is Weight Loss Your New Year’s Resolution?
E
very new year, droves of people make a resolution to lose weight. They promise themselves they will eat better and exercise more. Why is it that the majority of us who make these promises aren’t able to shed the pounds, lose the inches and even stick to their program past January? Do they lack motivation or the nutritional education? Maybe they forgot to ask themselves how they got here in the first place? What caused you to gain the weight? No one “decides” to just gain weight. Something triggered the slippery slope. It could be every day stress, poor sleep habits, a traumatic life event, or an injury. Whatever it is, before you can lose the weight, you have to confront your trigger. Without doing so, you will likely find yourself right back where you started. Marketplace Kitchen & Bar, Avon, CT
Restaurants Keeping It Real By Kathy Beach, MS, NBC-HWC
D
o you like to eat out? I do! Of course, cooking at home is more cost effective and can be the healthier choice but eating out is fun, relaxing and can be a delicious culinary treat. I have to admit that I am pretty picky about the restaurants that I choose however, because I will only go if I can eat real food made with the best ingredients. So I thought that I would share how I figure that out and create a list of Connecticut restaurants that are getting it right. In the coming months, I will spotlight a different restaurant in each issue. How do I vet each restaurant? I will eat there, ask questions, talk to the staff, chef and owners if possible and look at their website. The Questions 1. Farm to table. Do they source their food primarily from local farms? Is this listed on the menu or a board? 2. Oils. Do they use canola, corn, sunflower, safflower, soybean, peanut or a blended oil? Will they simply use extra-virgin olive oil or avocado oil if you ask? 3. Animal Protein. Do they have menu options for 100% grass-fed meat, organic or pastured chicken, wild or sustainable farmraised fish that is carefully vetted? 4. Organic. Do they have organic options on the menu at all times (an organic salad)? Are they aware of the Dirty Dozen list from The Environmental Working Group and if so do they incorporate organic options of these foods into their menus? Are they familiar with the fact that Non-GMO products also contain pesticides? 5. Ingredients. Do they use real ingredients and avoid high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and preservatives? 6. Allergy friendly. Are the most common allergens listed on the menu (gluten, dairy, soy)? Is the staff trained to understand allergy concerns? Are they aware of the allergens in different menu items? Do they have gluten free choices? Is the kitchen willing and able to make substitutions to accommodate customer’s allergy or health concerns?

Natural Nutmeg - January/February 2021
It is more important than ever now to support our favorite local restaurants and this is definitely one of mine. I was very happy to get the chance to sit down with Jim Kara, the new manager of Marketplace, Avon and review “the questions”. Before I get into the food though, I want to mention that I felt very safe while dining there in the last few months. They are strictly following the advised protocols and going above and beyond with the installation of a Win Air purification system. On to the questions….in the CT growing season they source locally as much as possible and have their partners listed on a board that is updated frequently. Oxbow Farm in Canton (micro greens), Waldingfield Farm in Washington (heirloom tomatoes, kale, zucchini blossoms, garlic scapes, leeks) and New Hope Farm in Winsted (squashes) are a few of their partners. They are committed to helping local farms as much as possible and getting organic produce options when available. You can count on the arugula being organic and if you prefer to eat organically, just ask your server to check with the kitchen on what is organic that week. When it comes to oils, they always have extra virgin olive oil available. They do use a blended oil (25% olive & 75% canola) for searing and a non-GMO canola oil in the fryer. Sautéing is mostly done with olive oil and butter. If you are gluten sensitive, they have a dedicated GF fryer basket. Marketplace definitely has clean animal protein options. The majority of their beef is Allen Brothers (Chicago) and 100% grassfed when available. In addition, they bring in grass-fed beef and pasture raised pork from Aradia Farm in Southington, CT. Their motto is “Clean Food, Clear Conscience”! They also get FreeBird organic chicken when available and the half chicken entrée is always organic. Lastly, the salmon is sustainably raised off the coast of Scotland and is actually sushi grade. In general, they use real ingredients and avoid artificial colors and preservatives. When it comes to allergens, the staff is trained to answer questions and report food sensitivities and allergies to the kitchen. The menu designates items that are gluten free, vegetarian and vegan and offers many options. Some of my current favorites include: Beets & Burrata Arugula Salad, New Hope Farms Winter Squash Bisque, Vegetarian Mediterranean Sampler and Allen Brothers Braised Short Ribs, Oh yes, and a glass of the Riff Organic Pinot Grigio! Check out the craft cocktails too, they have organic tequila and GF/non-GMO vodka as well. If you are interested in hosting an event, they have a lovely private room and are also able to cater events that they can fully staff. https://www.markethospitalitygroup.com/avon/ Submitted by Kathy Beach, MS, NBC-HWC, National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach http://integrativehealthmanagement.org kathybeach@integrativehealthmanagement.org 860.463.7179
Setting Sustainable Weight Loss Goals
By Sheree Wujtewicz
W
ith the new year brings new goals and for many people those goals mean weight loss. 2020 was such a difficult year for nearly everyone and the added changes may have resulted in stress eating. To add to it, so many of our holiday celebrations mean we may partake in larger meals, plentiful desserts, and maybe more eggnog than we would care to admit. All of these indulgences can leave us sluggish and, very often, feeling guilty. Once the new year hits, we try to find the motivation to drop those extra pounds with gym memberships and fad diets. This is how we have all been conditioned to think, indulge now and just work harder later. It seems simple in theory but almost never works in practice. Once that initial motivation wears off, we find ourselves hitting a wall. The diet is no longer sustainable and the desire to go to the gym is replaced with other day to day tasks. Taking time for ourselves gets put at the end of our priorities. These are just a couple of the reasons all those new year’s resolutions don’t make it past the first couple of months. We need a different approach to our overall health, not just our weight. We need to see our bodies as intricate machines that need the proper fuel to run efficiently. Just trying to lose weight by any means necessary can do more harm than good in the long run. We know starvation diets aren’t sustainable and counting calories is a chore. The short-term approaches
are designed to be just that, short term. We need to view changes as long-term and life-long benefits to our lives. The transition from a fast-paced, convenience food lifestyle to one focusing on whole foods and daily movement can seem like a daunting task, but the rewards are worth it. The proper fuel for your body may mean more energy, better sleep, a smaller waistline, and finally feeling like you are in control of your weight. When it comes to taking a holistic approach to weight loss, some of the key components are; reducing stress, getting enough sleep, exercise, and having a nutrient-dense diet that centers on whole foods. Eating is a common response to stress so learning ways to reduce stress can help both physically and mentally. If you are a stress-eater, it is important to acknowledge that in order to address the issue. One way to reduce stress is exercise and many find increased stress reduction when they are able to do so outside. You don’t necessarily need a gym membership to get your body moving. There are many great options for home workouts. Regular exercise may improve your sleep quality as well. Another way to help improve sleep quality is to be sure you have time to relax prior to bedtime. Many of us are finding ourselves working more from home and often working right through the evening. Carve out some time where you can unwind before trying to fall asleep.
Cutting back on processed sugar, drinking plenty of water, having fruits and vegetables at every meal, and making sure you get plenty of fiber are all key components of having a more healthful diet. Fiber is one of the most overlooked nutrients in our society, but has been linked to lower cholesterol, weight loss, and more. You may have noticed that all of the tips I mentioned are linked to one another. If you are fueling your cells with the nutrients it needs, your body will be able to function optimally. Once your body is fueled properly, you may have more energy to move more and enjoy different forms of exercise that you never did before. That is why looking at weight not just as a number on the scale, but as just one part of your overall health is so important. To make sure you are starting off on the right nutritional path for you, it is important to consult with a trained nutrition consultant to avoid the traps of yo-yo dieting. You may need to discuss diet changes with your doctor. Having a plan in place will lead to a higher likelihood of achieving your goals and being able to sustain them long-term. Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy for Chronic Pain By Alina Schneider, APRN and Meghan Chafee, APRN
P
latelet Rich Plasma injections (PRP) are regarded as a revolutionary modality of care in the field of anti-aging/ regenerative medicine. Due to the long-term complications that surgical interventions may entail, less invasive procedures like PRP are becoming extremely popular as a safer alternative than surgery in the optimal management of soft tissue injuries and chronic pain. Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP, is blood plasma with concentrated platelets. The concentrated platelets found in PRP contain large reservoirs of bioactive proteins, including growth factors that are vital to initiate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. These bioactive proteins initiate connective tissue healing for bone, tendon and ligament regeneration. They help to promote development of new blood vessels and help to stimulate the wound healing process. PRP therapy, which takes approximately forty minutes to complete, begins with collection of the patient’s blood (essentially, a basic blood draw). The blood sample is placed in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the other components of whole blood. Our providers will then inject the concentrated platelets into the site of the injury or pain. Platelets function as a natural reservoir for growth factors that are essential to repair injured tissues. The growth factors that the platelets secrete stimulate tissue recovery by increasing collagen production, enhancing tendon stem cell proliferation, and tendon cellrelated gene and protein expression. These growth factors also stimulate blood flow and cause cartilage to become firmer and more resilient. PRP activates tendon cells to proliferate quickly and produce collagen to repair injured tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and muscles.

PRP therapy is the re-administration of your own platelets to activate the body’s natural healing process to help in repair and regeneration. High concentrations of platelets also stimulate the release of growth factors that further aid in tissue regeneration. PRP technique has been in use for over 2 decades, especially in the surgical field where orthopedic surgeons have used PRP to enhance the pace of healing. Various research studies have suggested that utilization of PRP can offer valuable benefits in soft tissue injuries as well as degenerative bone conditions such as spinal disc degeneration or arthritis. PRP is also used in aesthetics and dentistry. Conditions Treated with Platelet Rich Plasma Today, the data and statistical evidence on the effectiveness of PRP therapy is still in the early stages. Based on early clinical medical research done so far, the following injuries and soft tissue conditions respond well to PRP joint therapy: • Achilles tendinitis • Medial collateral ligament (MCL) tears • Knee osteoarthritis • Injuries to ligaments and muscles • Chronic lower back pain • Spinal stenosis • Tennis elbow • Acute and chronic tendon problems • Joint fractures • Plantar fasciitis • Neck pain • Rotator cuff tears
Benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy Here are a few reasons why PRP is preferred over surgical interventions or other more invasive procedures: • Platelet-rich plasma injections are extremely safe and do not affect the endurance, stamina or athletic vigor of patients. Additionally, there is limited down-time to the procedure. • The risks of any side effects or longterm complications are very rare. Most patients report only mild side effects like localized pain lasting only a few days, some swelling and injection site stiffness. • PRP injections are performed with local anesthesia. Depending upon the initial extent of an injury, the overall process of healing may take a few weeks, and rarely, up to a few months. While most patients do not require more than 1-2 injections, you should know that complete regeneration of damaged collagen may require multiple sessions. In the early post-therapy period (2-3 weeks after the PRP injection), most patients report remarkable improvement in the severity of symptoms such as pain and discomfort. Massaging the area before and after PRP treatment increases the blood flow to the affected area and improves results. Alina Schneider, APRN and Meghan Chafee, APRN practice at the Center for Holistic Healthcare in Glastonbury and are trained and certified in PRP techniques for pain and aesthetics. 860.430.5300. www.ctrforholistichealthcare.com. Safe and Effective Body Contouring with MediCupping™ By Kristina Mozzicato, LMT, BCTMB
C
upping (aka Vacuum Therapies) has been widely used for centuries to treat a variety of medical conditions ranging from muscle tension to insomnia. A glass or silicone cup is placed on the body to create a negative pressure, lifting the skin, fascia, and muscle tissue to create an effective way to release tension, pain, and muscle “knots.” Localized circulation is improved and vascular dilation helps to draw out toxins and inflammation. Scar tissue and adhesions are softened and released, soft tissue is lifted and stretched, and range of motion is improved. Cupping helps to move lymph stagnation and relieve inflammation. Some conditions that respond to this type of bodywork are: fibromyalgia, tendonitis, edema, sciatica, lung inflammation and congestion, and plantar fasciitis. Lymphatic drainage achieved via cupping is beneficial for pre-operative clients and may assist in their healing process post-surgery. Cupping can help to improve athletic performance and improve movement restrictions by softening and lifting muscle attachments at the joint. What is MediCupping? MediCupping™ uses a machine which allows the practitioner to control the intensity and rhythm of the suction so that it is comfortable for the client, has a sedative effect on the nervous system, and mimics the actions of deep tissue massage without discomfort. Beyond the pain-relieving ben-
efits of MediCupping™, it greatly facilitates opening up the lymphatic system, dredging and draining old lymph congestion and moves it out to be eliminated. This is the key to body contouring. After an area of the body has been cupped, it considerably increases its ability to absorb oils, creams, and lotions. When MediCupping™ is performed, vascular dilation is used to deliver heat to the area and softens, or decongests, old lymph (stagnation) so that it can travel through the lymphatic system to be eliminated. This helps to eliminate inflammation from the affected tissue. Vacuum dredging of the muscle tissues allows for blood supply, nutrition, and hydration to reach the cells, and old waste to be purged. The vasodilation (blood vessels expanding) provides a way for inflammation in our muscle tissues to rise to the skin’s surface for elimination. This results in pain relief, which can often be immediate, for both chronic and acute symptoms. The appearance of spider veins is also improved.
blood, and debris. This often manifests as weight gain or cellulite, which can eventually lead to serious health issues. Solid bloat is often caused by inflammation, which leads to dehydration of the tissues and the inability of the lymphatic system to eliminate waste. Cellulite usually consists of acidic, stagnant lymph and debris (stored in the fat cells) that can be comprised of a lifetime accumulation of old medications, anesthesia, smoke, or other inhaled toxins, and cellular waste. A decrease in blood circulation weakens the surrounding tissue and causes fluid to be retained. These accumulated toxins that are stored in the stagnant lymph will aggravate the immune system and liver, thereby leading to more inflammation. MediCupping™ effectively helps to eliminate several years of solid bloat accumulation.
MediCuppingTM Eliminates Solid Bloat “Solid bloat” refers to the layers of accumulation that is comprised of stagnant lymph,

The MediCupping™ Body Contouring Cocoon is a safe, gentle, and effective treatment for solid bloat, cellulite, and body contouring. Negative pressure moves and helps drain old and stagnant lymph. Pre-surgery and post-bariatric patients are good candidates for this treatment. The gentle vacuum action of the cups helps to firm and tone the skin. The practitioner performs MediCupping™ by first unblocking the client’s lymph channels. A specific blend of therapeutic-grade essential oils is applied to each body area after MediCupping™ is used. (Eight different blends of essential oils are used specific to each of the 8 treatment sessions which assist in dissolving fat and cellulite, and toning the skin. An additional essential oil blend is used in the ninth session and the subsequent maintenance sessions.) Then, the client is wrapped in sheets, covered in a warm blanket, and can relax for approximately 20 minutes, while enjoying a neck, shoulder, and foot massage. After the treatment session, it is recommended that the client drink plenty of water and avoid showering, saunas, and exercise for at least 4-6 hours. The client will notice a difference after the first session, however, the results are cumulative and a series of 8 treatments is recommended (twice a week for a minimum of four weeks) for maximum results. Maintenance treatments are recommended once a week or twice per month, depending on the individual client. Compared to traditional cupping, a MediCupping™ session is very gentle, comfortable, and sedating. Unlike liposuction and other similar treatments, there is no bruising or downtime after receiving the MediCupping™ Body Contouring Cocoon treatment. Instead of “freezing” the fat or cellulite, stagnant lymph is safely moved out of the affected area via the lymphatic system. MediCupping™ is a very relaxing and effective treatment that yields healthy, realistic results. Kristina Mozzicato is a Licensed Massage Therapist and Board Certified by NCBTMB. A Lifetime Saga of Mastering My Weight By Sharon Sklar, Certified Advanced Rolfer
I
was a chunky kid who was not very athletic and not very coordinated. People said I had a cute face, you know what that means! On my dad’s side, we had an aunt and uncle who each probably weighed five hundred pounds. Their daughter soon tipped the scale in the same manner and another cousin was about four hundred pounds. The family motto seemed to be “food is love” and if you didn’t eat what they offered, they took it personally. They were fun and jovial people. We lived near them so we had many meals together or were told to come over and get some pie, cake, homemade rugelach or some serious chicken soup. It was a constant food fest. My mom’s family was smaller and lighter. There was great food on that side as well, but more formal in its nature and certainly not pushed at us. My grandmother was a wonderful cook and I remember many of her dishes and make them now myself. In high school, my mom sensed I was unhappy and brought me to a friend of hers who was a diet doctor. She was heavy and struggled with her weight, making her words believable. I lost twelve or so pounds and felt like my life changed. She had me exercise every day for 15 or 20 minutes and follow some basic eating rules; the three meal a day, snack on a piece of fruit type diet and it worked! I was a mother’s helper at the beach that summer, fell in love for the first time, and all was just fine.
I went off to college and the “freshman 15” was inevitable. All-you-can-eat in the dorm cafeteria, followed by a tasty late night pizza since the food in the dining room was not so great. I would try the three main courses but never felt satisfied. That pizza saved my life day after day. The snack bar at the dorm next door was also a great respite from studying and the soft ice cream was a real hit. In my senior year, I began to fast and after consuming only water for three days I felt the most clear-headed I had ever been. My eating desires began to rapidly change after that. I was healthy and strong and had stopped eating meat and chicken right after I graduated from college. I was uneducated about the need for good protein and the relationship of carbs/sugar and empty calories. Weight Watchers helped me over the next few years to lose the weight I would gain, up and down thirty pounds at a time with no real plan. It wasn’t until I was told I was prediabetic after I received chemo for breast cancer that I got serious about my weight and that part of my health. I now had a choice to make which
was really no choice at all. I was going to do whatever it took to stop that train. I realized that what I ate which was healthy was all wrong. I ate a ton of carbs; the “thin” sandwich bread, ketchup, balsamic vinegar which contained added sugar, diet drinks, measured portions of white pasta, way too much cheese and not enough protein. One day, in a doctor’s office, I saw a brochure about a new diet and attended a talk he gave about it. I went so that I could be up on the latest to share with my clients, but ended up signing up myself. It was all about protein and vegetables. Boom. I lost forty-five pounds over four months. With a few tweaks, I began to get on board with a new science of food balancing. I didn’t need to count points, I needed to keep the protein and veggies, add some healthy

carbs and dairy and learn what to combine and when it was best. These last nine years have proven to me that diets don’t work. What works is discipline, knowledge, commitment and self-awareness. Am I really hungry or am I really thirsty? Am I eating because I’m upset or am I nourishing myself with this food? I am active because I love it. I eat good food because there is nothing better. If you struggle with your weight, please ask yourself, is that food more important than your health? A wonderful piece of cake once in a while is great, but there are no daily rewards that really matter. Create your vision and make that your destiny. Health comes first, the reward is your joy that you can be in charge. Sharon Sklar is in her 40th year of private practice as a Certified Advanced Rolfer. Did You Know Digestive Problems Can Reduce Your Immune Function? By Steven R. Frank
C
onsidering the pervasive use of preservatives and the increase in modified foods in our diet, is it any wonder why we have more digestive problems than any other generation on Earth? Our high sugar and carbohydrate intake feeds the fungus and molds (like Candida) that we don’t want in our gut. The preservatives in food that are designed to kill bacteria in the bread, cereal, canned and dried foods are killing the good bacteria that we do want in our gut. We all know that antibiotic use disturbs the bacterial balance in a terrible way. Get Rid of the Weeds If you have tried probiotics then you know that they can have a positive effect. However, if your front yard was a huge crab-grass/weed patch, would you sprinkle thousands of dollars of high-quality seed on it expecting a beautiful lawn to emerge? Of course not. You would first get rid of the weeds. Consider this three-pronged approach to the gut rehabilitation process. The first step is to get rid of the weeds. Kill off as many of the bad bacteria and irritating fungus as possible. The second step is to reseed the gut with good bacteria which will aid in digestion and keep out the fungus. Thirdly, we need to repair the damage that has been done to the epithelial lining of the intestines by the fungus and bad bacteria. This can be done holistically and naturally. In order to accomplish the first step, we need a broad-spectrum antimicrobial that is bio-compatible yet kills bacteria and fungus significantly. An enhanced aqueous silver colloid of better than 40 ppm will accomplish this nicely. It is best taken on an empty stomach and in bolus dosing of 2 ounces every 2 hours. This can be continued for two or three days with one bottle per day being consumed. It should be remembered that mixing a colloid of silver
with anything containing salt will ruin it and food tends to make it less effective. Taking the colloid on an empty stomach and not eating for an hour afterwards maximizes the effect. After two or three days of this protocol, you will have attenuated the bacteria and fungus in your gut significantly. Another side benefit of this is that the level of H. pylori in your stomach will also be dramatically reduced. Re-Seed with Good Bacteria Now, it’s time to re-seed with the probiotic of your choice. This will reestablish the fauna of bacteria necessary to support proper digestion and nutrient extraction from your food. The probiotic ingestion should be continued for at least a month. It is not that important to have the most expensive probiotics available. The most important task is to make sure that they have a good environment in which to multiply and thrive. You gave them an environment where they’re not fighting to survive by clearing out all the bad bacteria and fungus in the first step. Heal Your Tissues The third step is to repair the epithelial lining. The years of antibiotics, preservatives and sugar have allowed a fauna of pathogens that have been eating-away at your intestinal lining, 24/7 for years. This tissue needs to be healed. Take a mixture of herbs that are designed to heal the tissues, increase mucus to protect the region, and reduce histamine sensitivity allowing the intestines to re-build a healthy effective lining. We would suggest the following: Plantain, Licorice, Aloe Vera, Peppermint, Marshmallow root and Slippery Elm bark. These can be encapsulated or made into a tea. Again, taking the capsules or drinking the tea on an empty stomach is best. Also, be sure to include some very basic building blocks like
2000mg of Vitamin C, 10,000 IUs of Vitamin D and a good B-complex daily. The GI tract is critical not only to absorption of nutrients through digestion, but also to the proper operation of your immune system. A non-functional or poorly functioning digestive system can cause a myriad of health problems as it produces nutritional deficiencies and a compromised immunity system. Diseases such as arthritis, auto-immune disorders, and many skin conditions have been traced back to problems of the gut. This is because damaged digestive tissues are exposed to food and not protected by a mucus layer. This produces a histamine response that the immune system perceives as an invasion. Obviously, conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, SIBO and Crohn’s are problems of the gut. Without a digestive system, you would die. Why then is it hard for us to appreciate that with a poorly working digestive system we will be in poor health? Kill, re-seed, restore. Put your gut back on track and watch your health improve. The Difference Between Mammography and Thermography By April Beaman, RDH, CTT
A
s a Medical Thermographer, I’m asked these several questions repeatedly, “What’s the difference between mammography and thermography?” “Is thermography better than mammography?” “Does it replace mammography?” There’s often confusion on this subject, by thinking one replaces the other. Nothing could be further from the truth! One could say comparing these two breast screening tools is like comparing apples to oranges. Let’s dive a little deeper, first looking at the differences between the two. Mammography Mammography is an X-ray that utilizes ionizing radiation to image the internal structure of the breast. During a mammogram, the breasts are positioned and compressed between two plates. Two X-ray images are taken of each breast, one from the top and one from the side. A mam18
Natural Nutmeg - January/February 2021
mogram is a structural test, its purpose is to detect a change of the anatomy within the breast, for example a mass or tumor. A radiologist studies the X-ray images to look for abnormalities, specifically densities and calcifications.
its purpose is to detect physiological activity of the breast tissue, for example, heat. A thermologist studies the thermal images to look for abnormalities, specifically uneven temperature variations and irregular vascular patterns.
Thermography
Comparing Apples to Oranges
Thermography is a pictorial representation of the heat emissions of the breasts. Think of a thermogram as a map that depicts heat, thermal patterns and temperature variations on the surface of body, which is represented by colors. Thermography utilizes a specialized infrared camera that does not touch or emit any radiation to the body. Because Thermography does not use compression, the entire chest including the breasts and axillary regions (armpit) are imaged. There’s a total of 6-8 images taken of all views of the chest and breast area in a series. A thermogram is a functional test,
Mammography is a test of structure (anatomy) and can locate a mass or a tumor that already exists within the breast. It can also locate something that looks like a tumor that is most likely harmless. None the less, this usually leads to additional mammograms or worse, unnecessary biopsies and treatment. Because Breast Thermography is a test of function (physiology) it cannot detect the exact location of a tumor, it detects heat and inflammation. It’s known that inflammation is the root cause of many diseases, including cancer. A find-
ing of heat or inflammation on a thermogram could be an early warning sign that a problem is developing or exists.
FEEL FREE, MOVE WELL, GET ROLFED!
Breast abnormalities such as tumors don’t just suddenly appear. Long before you and your doctor feel a lump, or it’s discovered by a mammogram, its cellular contributors are hard at work behind the scenes. The process of cancer starts with one abnormal cell and can take up to 10 years to replicate to one billion cells which is about 1 centimeter, the size of an eraser head. This is the size of a lump that can be detected by mammography. Cancer cells also require a blood supply and an ever-increasing need for nutrients in order to survive and proliferate. Being aggressive, these cells create their own pathway to obtain this nourishment and lifeforce. In order to do this, the cells send out chemical messages to open existing blood vessels, recruit dormant vessels, and create new ones. This process of increased blood vessels is known as neoangiogenesis and it results in an increase of surface temperatures of the breast. With the activity of these blood vessels, there is an increase of blood flow which produces heat and inflammation that can be detected by the infrared camera and seen on a thermogram. Mammograms and physical exams cannot detect this early-cellular, physiological process which typically occurs within the breast tissue 5-10 years before the slightest sign of a lump. Since functional changes precede structural changes, thermography can provide valuable information in the early indication of breast changes and disease. Further, these early warning signs can alert a physician to monitor a woman closely and more importantly, put forth preventative measures to help reduce certain risk factors of breast cancer.

Early Detection and Prevention Mammography is praised as the gold standard for breast screenings, yet it’s far from perfect and has its limitations. It has been shown to be an ineffective screening tool for dense breast tissue and women with implants. Not to mention mammograms expose sensitive breast tissue to ionizing radiation which research has shown to be an environmental cause of cancer. However, if cancer is detected, even early, it means you already have cancer. The current dialog pertaining to breast cancer focuses on detecting it, then treating it. Shouldn’t this narrative change? Shouldn’t prevention take precedence over detection? Prevention means not getting cancer in the first place. In my opinion, if there’s

So, I ask, should you wait until a tumor has formed and grows large enough to be detected by a mammogram? I like to think that finding early changes as they occur through an annual thermogram is much earlier detection and even prevention. The valuable information provided by a thermogram can help a physician develop an action plan to take proactive measures to improve your breast health or even reverse certain risk factors to prevent the disease in the first place. My hope for every one of my clients, is that a routine thermogram will empower them to take a proactive approach to take their breast health into their own hands. I am pleased to say that many of them have and continue to because they see the improvements for themselves on their thermogram! Following their screening appointment and during our consultation together, I ask my clients to evaluate their lifestyle and dietary choices. I encourage
them to make simple changes and employ self-care techniques based on their thermographic findings. These simple changes, though they may seem small, can have a big impact not only with breast health but overall health. True prevention! I am an advocate for taking a proactive approach and staying well informed regarding one’s health. In addition to your regular medical breast examinations, I encourage you to consider breast screenings using Breast Thermography. The results could change your life. to consider and choose whether Roth or Pre-Tax contributions or combination of both would be attractive for your overall tax strategy. Be sure to see if your employer offers a company match and try to take advantage of the full match.
to up to $58,000 which is the limit for SEP IRAs, 401ks or Solo 401Ks. If you would like to set up a plan to fund for 2021, there is still time to open and fund an IRA or SEP IRA, should those end up being right for your business.
If you are already maxing out your savings, ask if your plan offers other ways to save like after-tax contributions, deferred compensation plan, employee stock purchase programs, or other incentive plans.
You’ll need to assess your income level, type of business entity, number of employees (if any), desired contribution amount, and time of year in order to select which plan is best for you. A Financial Advisor or professional tax advisor can certainly assist you with this selection and can make the process easy.
If You Are Self-Employed When you have your own business, options include IRAs, Simple IRAs, SEP IRAs, 401ks or Solo 401ks. The amount that you can contribute can range from $6000 for someone under 50 for an IRA or ROTH,
If You Are Not Employed There are many individuals who still would like to save for their retirement, but
The best part about this resolution? Options to save offer the best way to save in my opinion – the AUTOMATION of contributions. You can set it up once and you will be scheduled to contribute all year long. If You Are Employed If you have an Employer 401K, 403B, or other savings plan, make it a point to start contributing to your plan if you haven’t already, or simply increase your employee deferrals for 2021. The limit this year for regular 401k or 403b contributions is $19,500, and you can do an extra $6,500 if you are over age 50. Don’t forget www.NaturalNutmeg.com

Natural Nutmeg - January/February 2021
If you simply have income from other sources that you would like to earmark for retirement, you will have to check with an accountant to see if you would be eligible for any “retirement” accounts based on your income type. Even if traditional retirement account types are not available, there are still options for you to save in an automated fashion for a regular savings or investment account. Remember, the BEST WAY TO SAVE is to set up a recurring contribution. A monthly basis is great but quarterly or annually works too. The key is to have it happen automatically. For long range goals like retirement, there are many kinds of investments that could be suitable depending on your risk appetite. If you aren’t sure what would be best for your retirement account, just ask! Seeking outside advice from professionals when you need it for tax, legal, or financial advice can make the overall process easier and less stressful for you. Wishing you peace and universal support in the days ahead, one day at a time. HAPPY SAVING IN 2021! Dana R. Kidney Care for Critical Detoxing and Longevity By Erika Dworkin, Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition
A
re you seeking ways to improve your body’s ability to combat both viral and other infections and age-related degenerative diseases? One of the most important things you can do is help it detoxify the wastes that bombard it daily. Supporting your kidneys with healthy lifestyle choices and nutritional supplements is valuable insurance for optimal health now and in years to come. Kidney Purpose and Function The kidneys are two bean-shaped, fist-sized major organs on either side of the spine. They are part of the renal system, which also includes the ureters (ducts that carry the urine created in the kidneys to the bladder), bladder (pear-sized; allows storage and controlled release of urine), and urethra (transports urine from the bladder out of the body). In addition to enabling the body to remove waste as urine, the kidneys: (1) filter the body’s blood (1- 1.5 gallons, 40 times/day) of toxins and waste materials before returning it to the bloodstream and heart with its vitamins, amino acids, glucose, hormones and other vital substances, (2) maintain overall fluid balance, (3) regulate and filter minerals from blood, and (4) create hormones that help produce red blood cells (erythropoietin), promote bone health (vitamin D), and regulate blood pressure (renin). Due to their complex structure and constant exposure to toxic waste, the kidneys are susceptible to a variety of complications, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), kidney stones and cysts, and acidosis (blood becomes too acidic due to the kidneys’ failure to excrete acids). These and other kidney conditions can cause
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is recognized as a major health problem...Numbers of prevalent CKD patients will continue to rise, reflecting the growing elderly population and increasing numbers of patients with diabetes and hypertension. As numbers of CKD patients increase, primary care practitioners will be confronted with management of the complex medical problems unique to patients with chronic renal impairment. As well documented in the literature, the nephrologist rarely manages the medical needs of CKD patients until renal replacement therapy is required. ~ Chronic Kidney Disease and Its Complications, Prim Care. 2008 Jun; 35(2): 329–vii, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih. gov/pmc/articles/PMC2474786/.
various symptoms, such as difficult or painful urination, frequent urges to urinate, eye puffiness, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, reduced appetite, muscle cramps, foot/ankle/hand swelling, and dry/itchy skin. Signs of kidney stones include extreme persistent back pain, fever/chills, vomiting, or urine that is smelly, burns upon urination, contains blood, or is cloudy. Renal Dysfunction: Risk Factors and Testing According to the National Kidney Foundation, 33% of adults in this country are at risk for kidney disease but are unaware of the risk factors. The fact that kidney disease increases the risk of www.NaturalNutmeg.com

developing life-threatening complications from COVID-19 makes it even more important to test the kidneys regularly to prevent, diagnose, and treat it. It is well established that the most common kidney disease risk factors include: (1) pre-diabetes and diabetes; (2) high blood pressure; (3) chronic heart disease/failure; (4) family history of kidney failure; and (5) being African American, Hispanic, or American Indian. Research has shown that oxidative stress (OS), an imbalance in the body between antioxidants and the production of reactive oxygen species is present even in early stage CKD, increases as CKD progresses toward end stage renal disease, and is exacerbated in dialysis patients (thought to be triggered by dialysis-related factors, chronic inflammation, and malnutrition). Kidney function is evaluated through these urine or blood tests: (1) Urinalysis - screens for the presence in the urine of protein, blood, or creatinine (a waste product from muscle breakdown); (2) Serum Creatinine Test – since the kidneys maintain blood creatinine in a normal range, elevated creatinine level (women > 1.2 mg/dL, men > 1.4 mg/dL) indicates impaired kidney function; (3) Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) Test - measures the amount of nitrogen, a breakdown product of protein, in the blood (kidney damage is not the only cause of elevated BUN tests; aging, pregnancy, a high/low protein diet, and common medications, such as steroids, high-dose aspirin and some antibiotics, can skew this test); (4) Estimated GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate) (Normal eGFR = 60 mL/min or higher) - indicates how well the kidneys are filtering waste by taking into account creatinine levels, age, gender, race, height, and weight; and (5) Urine Albumin Test (N < 30 mg/g) - checks the urine for the level of albumin, a protein normally only found in the blood that can pass into the urine when the kidney filters are damaged; a level over normal can indicate kidney disease even if eGFR is normal. Kidney-Healthy Lifestyle Choices Living a healthy lifestyle is the first step toward maintaining ongoing kidney health. When kidneys are healthy, a supportive lifestyle generally includes: (1) an organic Mediterranean or other plant-based diet that is rich in healthy fats, adequate amounts of
protein (ideally, mostly fish, chicken, turkey, eggs), and protective, detoxifying vegetables and fruits (onions, garlic, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, apples, and berries), and low in sugar/simple carbohydrates, salt, and pro-inflammatory gluten and dairy; (2) staying hydrated with at least 64 ounces of water/day, up to half one’s body weight in ounces; (3) no smoking or recreational drugs, and low alcohol intake; (4) avoiding overeating and being overweight/ obese; and (5) maintaining healthy blood pressure and blood sugar. Regular continuous or repetitious exercise that works large muscle groups (cycling, swimming, weightlifting) and stress management activities (yoga, tai chi, deep breathing, meditation) are also critical for long term kidney health. Dietary Supplements that Support Renal Health Regardless of the presence of any risk factors, taking measures to prevent kidney disease or alleviate its symptoms is a beneficial proactive approach to increasing longevity. While space limitation allows for only a brief discussion of available kidney-protective nutritional supplements, some of the key, most science-supported nutrients are noted below. Berberine (BBR): This nitrogen-containing compound, which can be extracted from various plants (including goldenseal and Oregon grape), has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine for numerous ailments. In a 2019 animal study, researchers concluded that BBR is potentially therapeutic in diabetic kidney disease due to its ability to suppress excess generation of ROS in the mitochondria (cell powerhouses), mitochondrial dysfunction, and fat accumulation/deficient breakdown and use of fatty acids. Milk Thistle: The high level of silymarin (a mixture of antioxidant/antimicrobial flavonoid complexes) in this herb increases glutathione and SOD levels, supports cell repair and regeneration, and combats inflammation. Scientific evidence indicates that silymarin guards the kidneys against the toxic effects of drugs, including chemotherapy, benefits diabetic nephropathy, and may support prevention of nephropathy-induced premature death in diabetics.

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA): ALA is an antioxidant that a healthy body normally makes. As a dietary supplement, lab and human research has proven its ability to: (1) block the oxidative damage caused by ischemia (inadequate blood supply) and reperfusion (the restoring of blood flow following injury), which commonly cause acute kidney failure; (2) prevent or mitigate against druginduced kidney damage; and (3) improve diabetic renal function by lowering sugar levels and reducing OS. It is noteworthy, however, that not all researchers agree on the beneficial impact of ALA supplementation on OS, inflammation, and red blood production in dialysis patients. Vitamin B6 (especially as P5P or Pyridoxamine): Animal studies have established that this member of the B complex family combats: (1) advanced glycation end products (AGEs), proteins or fats that are damaged and become harmful when combined with sugar, and advanced lipoxidation end-products (ALEs), both proven to greatly damage the kidneys; (2) high blood pressure; (3) diabetic nephropathy; (4) increase in creatinine in blood plasma; and (5) abnormal levels of excretion of urinary protein and albumin. CoEnzyme Q10 (CoQ10): This antioxidant, critical to the formation of cellular energy (ATP) and mitochondrial metabolism, is found in high levels in the kidneys, heart, and liver. Human studies have shown that CoQ10 concentration in the plasma of CKD patients is depressed, and research indicates that its supplementation can decrease OS, improve mitochondrial function, and

reduce adverse cardiovascular events in both dialysis and non-dialysis kidney patients. Animal studies have also shown that CoQ10 can protect kidney tissue from numerous nephrotoxic drugs. Other dietary supplements deemed to support optimal kidney function include: (1) omega-3 fatty acids/fish oil (anti-inflammatory); (2) vitamins E (especially Gamma E) and C (antioxidants); (3) resveratrol (antioxidant; anti-inflammatory); (4) vitamin D3 (antioxidant/OS inhibitor) (5) N-acetyl cysteine (NAC)(antioxidant/ OS inhibitor; replenishes glutathione stores; anti-inflammatory); (6) curcumin (from turmeric)(antioxidant; anti-inflammatory); and (7) chanca piedra (for kidney stones; increases excretion of magnesium, potassium; decreases urinary oxalate and uric acid). A Pivotal Life Changing Decision
By Eilis Philpott
H
ow does one thrive in life, business and relationships? I want to share with you my personal experience of how I was able to thrive in life. This is about a decision I had to make many years ago. Now when I look back on my life I can see how huge and impactful this decision was on my life from that point forward. Before I share what the decision was and what I chose, let me give you a little background information. I grew up in Ireland the eldest of 9 children. I was what is now known as a child who is very sensitive, but back in Ireland in those days I was told not to be so shy. I had periods of depression which went undiagnosed and became more frequent and more severe. I was hospitalized in my early 20’s, suffering from severe depression and anxiety. I was either crying non-stop or having major panic attacks. I did not even know that depression and anxiety were something you could go to the doctor for, I just thought I was going crazy. I was diagnosed with reactionary depression which meant that I was reacting to a number of major traumatic events in my life which had occurred over the previous year. I was given a number of medications and over the period of about 3 months I started to feel better (for the first time in many years). I was sent home highly medicated and told to get on with my life. My doctor also told me that I would never be able to have a stressful job and to give up any thoughts of pursuing teaching. A few years passed and with each new stressor new medications were added to my regime. I got engaged and moved to London to be with my fiancé. When I went to fill my prescription for all my medications, I was told that a lot of them were blacklisted in the UK and certainly should not be used in the combinations that I had been prescribed. Needless to say, the move caused a major relapse which resulted in my being admitted to a psychiatric hospital in London, where my meds were 26

assessed and immediately changed. I was given a new diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder with Anxiety. This time however I started therapy. My therapist, Jenny, was using a technique called Transactional analysis. I started feeling and connecting what had caused me to get to this place. This was not my first time living away from Ireland. Two years previously I had moved to London with a friend. Everything seemed fine and to be going well but inside I was not doing well. My depression and anxiety were becoming unbearable and I felt I had nowhere to turn. I ended up going back to Ireland to my family home and feeling a complete failure. This second time in London was beginning to feel very familiar and I knew I could always go back home. I had been there less than a month with the new meds and having regular therapy. My body was so anxious that it would constantly be jerking and I was afraid to go anywhere or do anything. One Tuesday morning I had just started my regular therapy session when Jenny said to me, “Your session is ending now and you have until 1pm today to decide whether you are going to stay in London or go back to Ireland. If you choose to stay it will be really, really hard but worth it.” My mind was a whirl! I knew that if I went back to Ireland that I would never leave, that I would be stuck with my parents and never live my own life as an independent adult. I also knew that if I chose to stay in London that in order to heal I had to face a lot of very painful emotions. I was afraid that there was no guarantee that I would ever feel well and was taking a huge risk in staying. I was also realizing that I really did not know myself and I was in London with the man I was planning on marrying. What if that didn’t work out either? I’m sure you can imagine the turmoil. It was nearly impossible for me at that time to live a so called normal life. I was afraid to do everything, I was constantly in
despair and having panic attacks. At 1pm, I met Jenny in the therapy room and told her that I had decided to stay. It was the best decision I ever made. Looking back now a few decades later, I can see the enormity of that decision. This was not just a fork in the road, it was the most important decision I ever made. It was pivotal and life changing. If I had gone back to Ireland I can see now that I would never have gotten well. I’m not denying that it was hard, it was very hard. I was in the hospital for 6 months, but I got off all my medication and continued with therapy. In the transition period between leaving the hospital for good and living life independently, I worked part time and began to get my confidence back. I went back to school and completed a Post Graduate qualification in Education. I got a job as a High School Science Teacher. This was a huge step for me and vindicated how far I had come. It felt as if I had finally finished what I had started many years ago. I’m not saying that life was easy and that I didn’t stumble and have set backs along the way. What I am saying is I never ended up back in a psychiatric hospital. I have continued to work on myself since then, moving from traditional therapy to alternative healing modalities and energy healing. I became a practitioner and have been supporting others now to move forward in their life with love and joy. Oh, and I did marry the guy! Resolve to Detox Your Finances in 2021
By Caroline Wetzel, CFP®, CDFA®, AWMA®
I
admit it. I sipped many virtual happy hour drinks and binged on comfort foods to initially cope with COVID-19. I regularly rationalized my choices. They offered enjoyment and relief during a stressful time. However, by late summer when my favorite summer dresses did not fit for special backyard barbecues with my husband, I painfully realized that my short-term decisions might have longer-term consequences. Seeking more than weight loss, I signed up for my first ever nutritional detox program. The experience was profound. Not only did I learn how to adjust my eating and improve my self-care for optimal health, the experience became a powerful metaphor for many of my clients’ work with me, cleansing themselves of toxic financial choices and enhancing their financial wellness over time. Choose an Experienced Professional You Trust
for years. Clients seek us out because we are fiduciaries; professionals who always serve clients’ best interests. Clients value our experienced, caring advice to support them in becoming financially healthy. Follow a Proven, Holistic Approach for Success The physician who developed the nutritional detox program incorporated years of her own professional experience with insights from other specialists that she trusted. Her program was rooted in meal plans, recipes, and nutrients that she and her patients found most beneficial over time. Complementing this structure were insights from a Certified Health Coach and virtual classes led by specialists in yoga, meditation, and Pilates that the physician organized. As a result, I gained heightened awareness of my current eating and self-care behaviors, knowledge for how to change them, and confidence to adjust my approach.
I decided to do the nutritional detox because I needed more than weight loss. I craved a renewed relationship with food. I knew that I would be most successful doing this if I was informed and inspired along the way by a competent and compassionate coach. So, I signed up for a program designed and led by an Integrative Medicine physician that I respected and trusted to guide me. Many clients choose to work with me for similar reasons. Often the death of a loved one, an inheritance, or a desire for “something more than just returns” from their investments inspire new clients to leave advisors that have managed their family finances
Similarly, clients’ financial health benefits from my years of professional experience. I guide clients through a structured and flexible financial planning process that I have developed over time with hundreds of clients. I look holistically at all pieces of clients’ financial picture and diagnose clients’ financial pain points and prescribe remedies like changes in financial choices to alleviate stressors. Regularly I work with clients’ CPAs and Trust & Estate Attorneys as well as independent dedicated insurance specialists. Sometimes we identify the root causes of clients’ chronic planning ailments. Other times we enhance clients’ existing plans for sustained wellness in response to clients’ life changes or dynamic tax and estate planning policies. Over time, my team regularly monitors clients’ financial vital signs, adjusting our approach as needed when life does not happen according to plan. As a result, my clients experience peace of mind as they continuously make choices to optimize their financial health.

Retain Focus on Wellness Over Time The nutritional detox reinforced for me that I can influence my health for the better. Regardless of where I am today on my health journey, I can make new and different choices to positively shape my way forward. I take comfort that when I get overwhelmed, get tired of preparing food from scratch, or just want to binge, these are valid feelings that require acknowledgement. And if, after recognizing these emotions, I struggle to retain healthy behaviors, I can seek the expert counsel of my trusted Detox Doctor and network of health professionals to re-assess what’s going on, course-correct (again), and stay on the long-term path to health. In the same way, clients who work with me realize that they can influence their financial health for the better. They see the opportunity that comes with owning their wealth today and over time. Biomagnetism: A Powerful Breakthrough for Lyme and Your Health By Carrie Hartney, DC
B
iomagnetism is a revolutionary, scientific, and therapeutic approach to wellness. Practiced internationally, it is a method to balance bioenergetic energy in the body. First, the body is screened for pH imbalances that could cause dysfunction. Then, powerful ceramic magnets are precisely placed on specific points to support the regulation of pH in these areas, allowing for homeostasis so the body can heal itself. After treatment, the body can return to normal immune function, increased circulation, oxygenation, and normalized inflammation. The Discovery of Biomagnetism Biomagnetism was discovered in 1988 by Dr. Isaac Goiz, a medical surgeon, after attending a seminar by Dr. Richard Broeringmeyer, who explained when working with NASA that he found astronauts had changes in leg lengths following trips into space. Dr. Broeringmeyer found he could restore leg lengths by placing magnets on specific points. Between the two physicians, they discovered the relationship between pH and biomagnetic pair placement. Biomagnetism isn’t the same as magnetic therapy. Magnetic therapy uses only one pole of magnetic therapy for more extended periods. In contrast, biomagnetism uses more powerful magnetic pairs for a short amount of time. Biomagnetism promotes healing by creating a hostile pH environment for specific pathogens. When viruses, parasites, bacteria, and fungi enter the body, they go to specific locations and create a biomagnetic pair. There is an energetic connection with one positive point that is acidic and one negative point that is alkaline. Acidic environments help viruses and fungi while alkaline environments favor bacteria and parasites. Placing magnets at the proper points creates opposites charges to neutralize the pathogen and develop an equilibrium with a neutral pH, allowing to quickly eliminate pathogens and restore the person to health.
Associated BMPs occur when regular BMPs pair together. These can create more complicated diseases such as abscesses, Alzheimer’s, and others. Successfully depolarizing these pairs helps to bring an improvement. Temporary BMPs form from being intoxicated, traumatized, and poisoned. These pairs address heavy-metal poisoning, injuries, pesticide poisoning, and more. The magnets used in this treatment are powerful and must be kept away from wallets, credit cards, and pacemakers. Scanning for these pairs is a process that examines changes in the length of the legs. After identifying different BMPs, the practitioner places magnets to see if they restore the leg length to normal. Average treatments take 30-60 minutes. Treatment of Lyme Disease Another exciting and new development in biomagnetism is the treatment of Lyme disease. The Lyme Magnetic Protocol was developed by Joan Randall, who had a complete recovery from her Lyme disease using biomagnetism after unsuccessfully trying antibiotics and herbs. Biomagnetic pair therapy brought her back to health and she became certified in biomagnetic pair therapy by Dr. Goiz. Joan developed and trademarked the Lyme Magnetic Protocol to teach other practitioners to eradicate Lyme and other symptoms. Lyme Disease is very complicated and needs an aggressive treatment approach due to multiple coinfections. My experience
Five Types of Biomagnetic Pairs There are five types of biomagnetic pairs (BMPs) where you can find distortions of pH. These distortions also affect our biomagnetic field. The five types of BMPs that can be treated are as follows: Regular BMPs, Special BMPs, Glandular dysfunctions BMPs, Associated BMPs, and Temporary BMPs. Regular BMPs have relationships with specific bacteria, fungus, viruses, and parasites. Their names are related to the specific pathogen. Special BMPs haven’t been associated with a specific pathogen. They are different than the pathogen pairs and have yet to be identified. They may be related to organs or nerve networks. Glandular dysfunctions BMPs often originate in the areas surrounding the gland. We can help restore function by correcting the glandular BMPs surrounding the gland and allowing the gland to resolve dysfunction and return to wellness.

shows chronic Lyme Disease is a multi-pathogen syndrome. All of these pathogens need to be addressed and eliminated. Only after successful treatment will the body be restored to wellness. The protocol usually takes 7–10 sessions, with the patient needing to be careful to avoid any reinfection. Some problematic cases and chronic Lyme disease can take up to 20–30 treatments. We treat each patient as an individual and time and protocols will vary by patient. In the beginning, the patient receives treatment every two weeks, progressing eventually to every five weeks. Patients often feel significant improvement after several sessions; however, this isn’t the time to slow down treatment. For successful healing, the treatment must be complete. Other factors also must be addressed, such as stress, diet, and sleep. If you want to enjoy peak health, you are an excellent candidate for biomagnetism. Biomagnetism therapy is compatible with conventional medical treatments, medication, chiropractic, acupuncture, nutrition, and homeopathy. Biomagnetic therapy doesn’t diagnose, prescribe or claim to treat certain conditions; it provides energetic balancing that offers therapeutic benefits by supporting normal structure and function. Submitted by Dr. Carrie Hartney who is a chiropractor and a certified Lyme magnetic practitioner and trained in biomagnetic therapy with Dr. Louis Garcia. 5 Basic Steps for Improving Fertility
By Jennifer C. Pierre, ND, MPH
O
ver the past 20 years, technological advances in fertility have been quite remarkable. Accordingly, it should come as no surprise that much of the attention rests on the fancy terminology and procedures that make up the modern fertility landscape. However, it is astounding how little attention is given to the basics of fertility. Fertility is still a biological process that can be enhanced naturally. Many reproductive practices require no equipment nor do they culminate in costly medical bills, just a well thought out diet and lifestyle regimen. In the United States, about 9% of men and 11% of women of reproductive age have experienced fertility issues. In about 1/3 of these cases, the cause is related to the man, another 1/3 is associated with the woman and in the final 1/3, the cause remains unidentified. Interestingly enough, most if not all, of the fertility conversation focuses on women even though men play a vital role in the final outcome as well. There are action steps men can take to improve sperm count and quality, thereby creating Olympic grade swimmers! In contemplating fertility, how often is lifestyle, diet and nutrition fully explored? Often it is an afterthought, only given a brief overview. It is imperative to examine some basic tenets of reproductive health that are often overlooked in practice. These tenets can significantly enhance fertility success with or without advanced medical techniques.
Stress
Sleep
Stress is the most underestimated fertility killer. Many women who express frustration about the inability to conceive often lead very busy lives. High-achieving women are used to accomplishing everything they set their sights on; not being able to realize the goal of conception may be especially difficult to manage psychologically. Compared to men, women tend to take on more of the emotional toll, as much of their perceived self-worth is tied into the ability to create life.
In life’s hierarchy of physical survival needs, sleep is often the first need to be sacrificed. There are many reasons we do not get enough sleep, a common justification is a lack of time. Time management practices can aid in providing structure to the day thereby increasing efficiency. There will always be surprises in scheduling, but having a consistent routine makes it easier to get back on track.
High-grade stress triggers the overproduction of cortisol and adrenaline released by the adrenal glands. When disruption occurs, the hormonal pathway favors cortisol production over sex hormones. Since the same precursor hormones are used to synthesize both cortisol and sex hormones; levels of testosterone, estrogen and progesterone decline. Any mother knows stress only intensifies once the baby makes its arrival. When pursuing a pregnancy ask yourself some pertinent questions: How will I make time for a new or additional baby? Have I streamlined my life to accommodate a new family member? What are the dynamics of my household? Have I considered the toll a baby will take on my partner? How will we dole out responsibilities? Consider seeking out a licensed therapist to examine these concerns and to assist in removing potential roadblocks that may be contributing to feelings of anxiety or depression.
Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which an individual cannot get to sleep or stay asleep, it is important to investigate all possible causes with a sleep specialist. Stress can affect sleep cycles as well. Cortisol is highest in the morning then gradually declines throughout the day until it reaches its lowest levels around bedtime. The opposite occurs under stressful conditions. Insomniacs tend to have higher levels of cortisol and brain activity than average, resulting in more frequent arousals. Having an erratic sleep schedule upsets the brain’s process of recharging while we are asleep. In this scenario, sexual arousal is affected as well and we all know how babies are born. Do not rob yourself of your body’s natural process of renewal. Establish a realistic bed time and stick to it, make sleep a priority now before the baby arrives. Self-Care For those struggling with infertility, constant medical appointments can be depressing. It is vital to keep one’s spirits www.NaturalNutmeg.com

uplifted and positive. During this time, it is essential to avoid internalizing any fearful thoughts. Incorporate daily reflection into your life by way of prayer, journaling and/ or meditation. Others may benefit from receiving a massage, acupuncture treatment or reading a book. Participate in any activity that invites you to slow down, reset and focus on creating more joy in your life. One unique practice is to recite fertility affirmations while visualizing the child that you wish to create. Repeat this affirmation daily: I let go of all stress and focus completely on having a healthy pregnancy. A quality self-care regimen is a basic tool that will improve the mental and physical conditions to increase the fertility odds. Alternatively, not having a self-care regimen can substantially alter or compound the toxic mental and physical state that contributes to infertility. Nutrient Intake What is the best diet for preconception? The same diet that benefits everyone, an antioxidant-rich whole foods diet plentiful in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Research has shown that women who consume more vegetable protein demonstrate lower rates of infertility. Antioxidants are found in plant-based foods and are responsible for the vibrant colors seen in
dark leafy greens and bright red tomatoes. They help neutralize free radicals that alter and damage cell DNA. Whole foods contain the cofactors needed for metabolic functioning and promote energy, both essential to conception. The following nutrients are the most researched with a positive correlation to fertility: Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Selenium, Alpha-lipoic acid, CoenzymeQ10 (ubiquinol), Carnitine, and the anti-inflammatory antioxidant-rich compounds Proanthocyanidins and Catechins. Supplementation can be achieved under the supervision of a naturopathic doctor, and consumption of foods containing these nutrients will lead the way to improved reproductive functioning. Weight Management The National Infertility Association reports that 30 percent of infertility cases are due to weight extremes, which can alter hormone levels and disrupt ovulation schedules. Recent studies demonstrate an association with obesity and poorer oocyte (egg) quality. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, male obesity may alter testosterone and other hormone levels. In male fertility testing, it is not uncommon to observe low sperm count and poor sperm motility in overweight
men. Moderate exercise not only burns fat, but has an additional benefit of increasing endorphins to abate the anxiety accompanying the disappointment of another negative pregnancy test. Conversely, extreme fitness programs can lead to irregular periods and decreased sperm counts. When it comes to baby-making, one can no longer overlook the impact of stress, sleep deprivation, self-care, proper nutrient intake and weight management. For further assistance, seek out a naturopathic doctor with fertility expertise who can ensure that your foundation is optimal prior to conception. What Weighs Us Down Can Lighten Us Up By Pat Heavren
A
t the turn of the new year, a lot of media attention is directed at replacing habits that drag us down or getting rid of unwanted pounds. Why is it that so much of our awareness becomes centered on losing something in favor of gaining something else? It seems to be a part of our human nature to long for something new and better and the new year is the perfect time to work toward it. But what if that very longing has the capacity to undermine us by hijacking the first and most essential step in any change effort: to find value in what’s been already gained or given in the first place. The more we see what is present as heavy and unworthy of some authentic form of our loving consideration, efforts to lighten up our consciousness, mood, or the extra pounds our physical bodies carry around will likely remain out of reach. Even if we’re successful in tipping the scales to “lose” the weight of what is burdensome (including stressful jobs, toxic relationships, and other perceived enemies), doing so without love guarantees we’ll become a storehouse of unconscious resentment. This doesn’t mean we purposely put ourselves in harm’s way, pretty up what is potentially and actually detrimental in a costume of denial, or abandon calls to action. Yet actions taken in the absence of some form of authentic embrace pretty much guarantee that stored resentments will be re-visited later in another form. Often, those forms come in greater attention-demanding, heavier and harder-to-lose packages. It’s the love or lack of love in our engagements with what is as it is that unfolds the nature and character of the future. The actions we take are simply the vehicle that delivers to visibility the quality of love we’ve carried inside about whatever we’re feeling weighted down by. It applies to everything we wish to change: unwanted pounds, heavy and isolating thoughts, stalled relationships, or other circumstances experienced as burdensome. In the fields of transformational healing, therapy, life coaching, and just plain being a good friend; our desire to be a help by moving each other on to the next best thing without encouraging each other to love what’s already there (even if it can be done only by looking back from a place of safety) comes at great risk. Our failure to do this manifests in more harm than good.
Maybe that’s what really weighs us down. Perhaps our natural inclination to seek the better might be more appropriately pointed toward finding the power and beauty in what already is. Maybe thinking there is anything truly new apart from the old throws us off track, and why these sentiments always appear as the next year approaches. The old adage says, there is nothing new under the sun and what we encounter is always a refreshed perspective of what’s come before. All we need to do is look around us to measure whether what we’re currently encountering has sprung from a source of love or from a lack of it. Love is what lightens everything up. As a life coach who tries not to help people meet their personal goals (at least initially, because we can’t and shouldn’t deny our human desire to evolve and change), it’s up to me to listen carefully for evidence of what is not being held tenderly in the stories my clients share. More often than not, some form of what people wish to avoid is vital for them to create a refreshed foundation. I’m reminded of this scriptural verse from the Judeo-Christian tradition, which says it well: The stone that the builders rejected becomes the chief cornerstone. RSV Psalm 118:22 If I collude with them in moving too quickly toward the goal for which they come to me, I’ll add to the burden of the weight they carry, even if joining them on that path makes both of us feel better for a while. Healers don’t heal. Coaches don’t coach. Educators don’t teach. True friends don’t take the easy way out. Instead, the work is to find the love in our own experience and support others in doing the same. Our only job for each other, as professionals or peers, is to be safe and loving companions for that exploration. Here are four steps to being a great companion: • Help others to pause before rushing to the new thing that will make the old thing disappear and hide in resentment. • Listen deeply to their stories. • Share what we hear is asking to be loved. • Get out of the way, so love can move through.

This is how what weighs us down can lighten us up. For example, a husband struggling with commitment in his marriage chooses to see his father who abandoned him as capable of loyalty, even if the father expressed it through his loyalty to addiction. The husband discovers the connection they share, ultimately uncovering that hidden capability in himself. The wife fighting life-threatening obesity claims herself to be a living and breathing storehouse of untapped potential and formidable power. The friend who believes weakness to be bad discovers that it opens vulnerability and greater intimacy in relationship. May this January and February fill all of us with the possibility of finding the cornerstones that will unfold not a new, but a recycled and refreshed version of the old! It’s the time of year to be reminded we have everything we need inside and around us always.

Trying to Conceive? Natural Ways to Boost Fertility By Nicole Kerr, ND, LAc
T
he journey to parenthood is an exciting experience. You read books, watch videos, listen to podcasts, and talk with friends and family that have experienced the joy of pregnancy. All in anticipation that you will join them in the ranks of being a mom or dad. The stories you hear can give you feelings of happiness, fear, uncertainty, and elation. The plethora of information at your disposal offers fascinating facts you never knew happened in your body, but you can also be exposed to contradicting information of the best ways to do everything in preparation to conceive. When the decision to start trying to conceive (TTC) has been made, preconception healthcare should be on the top of any couple’s list. Preconception health refers to the health of a baby’s mother and father before the woman gets pregnant. It is important for both men and women to be healthy before conceiving a baby. Improving one’s health before becoming pregnant improves the health outcomes for both mom and baby. Preconception care should start three to four months before actively TTC. This seems like a long time for many, but taking this time prior to TTC can improve the overall chances of conception and decrease potential pregnancy complications that could be prevented if addressed prior to becoming pregnant.
Why is 3-4 Months of Preconception Healthcare Suggested? The oocyte, female egg, that will eventually be fertilized by a single sperm starts to develop months prior to being selected as the primary follicle to be released out of the ovary. Allowing 3-4 months of preconception care will give enough time to positively affect oocytes being recruited as the primary follicle. Improving the egg health prior to primary follicular selection will improve chances of conception, the health of mom, and the health of the baby. Sperm take arguably 60-120 days to undergo all stages of development. The final stages occurring in the epididymis allow the sperm to become motile. The process of sperm production includes repeated oxidation reactions. During these times of oxidative stress, sperm is essentially left without intracellular defense mechanisms against oxidative damage. Only enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants in seminal plasma provide cellular protection. If high oxidative damage occurs without adequate antioxidants in the body, this can damage the developing sperm to swim in circles or not move at all. During preconception time is when male patients receive antioxidant therapy to improve sperm motility. This is a time when work can be done to improve the overall health of the sperm and male partner.
Balancing hormones for optimal fertility needs three months time to allow for proper signaling and homeostasis to be established between the sex organs, ovaries and testes, and the brain. Although powerful drugs like the oral contraception pill (OCP) can shut down reproduction immediately, new forms of male OCP need 2 months to show effect in a semen analysis. Regaining proper signaling between the brain and sex organs can take time and varies from person to person. Your health today is directly influencing the quality of the recruited follicles and sperm that are preparing to be chosen three months from now as the potential egg and sperm that will develop into your baby. The neuroendocrine system is vital in fertility and needs to be in balance. For example, recruited follicles are bathed in cortisol with high cortisol concentrations present in the pre-ovulatory follicles just prior to ovulation. It has been suggested that cortisol may function to reduce the inflammatory-like reactions occurring in connection with ovulation, though too high levels of cortisol are problematic to healthy functioning fertility. One study involving IVF patients showed follicular fluid from unfertilized eggs had levels of cortisol significantly higher than the levels in follicular fluid from follicles containing successfully fertilized eggs. This suggests that glucowww.NaturalNutmeg.com

corticoids (cortisol) may antagonize (work against) egg maturation when present at elevated levels. Giving yourself a preconception time period can help to lower negative stressors in your life that may be contributing to high levels of cortisol. These high levels of cortisol can interfere with fertility health and mental wellbeing. A preconception period allows time to get priorities in order before a baby is on the way, change unhealthy habits, set boundaries to achieve a more relaxed mind-set, improve sleep, and greatly improve the chances of conceiving. The take away point is to boost fertility prior to trying to become pregnant. What if You Have Been TTC for Longer Than One Year?

First, you should consider what type of treatments you are open to exploring on your journey to parenthood. When deciding what treatment options are right for your family, consider the following. According to the Center of Disease Control, infertility can be treated with “medicine, surgery, intrauterine insemination, or assisted reproductive technology.” In my opinion, these treatment options seem limited in scope and do not address the underlying cause of infertility. Yes, some patients need advanced treatment options and through a fertility assessment these couples can be identified and referred accordingly. For other patients, giving a 3-month preconception healthcare period where TTC is put on hold, can greatly benefit overall fertility and well-being for many couples. Body weight management. Women with obesity have a 2-fold increased time to conception, while underweight women have a 4-fold increased time to conception. The Center for Disease Control has noted, “energy-rich, nutrient-poor foods comprise an estimated 27% of daily caloric intake in the American diet. Many Americans are exceeding energy (caloric) needs but not meeting micronutrient (vitamins and nutritionally essential minerals) requirements,” which can ultimately effect Americans’ overall health and well-being, including fertility health. Alcohol reduction or complete avoidance. For women, consumption of more than 2 drinks/day had 60% relative risk to infertility. The CDC also noted that alcohol constitutes an additional 4% of daily caloric intake in the American diet.
Smoking cessation. There is a 60% increased infertility risk with smoking. Caffeine reduction. Consumption of more than 250mg/day decreased the probability of becoming pregnant within one menstrual cycle by 45%. Overall 1-2 cups of coffee per day has no apparent adverse effect on fertility. Chemical toxins and pollutant removal/avoidance. Solvents like those used in dry cleaning or printing industries were shown to increase relative risk of infertility by 40% in women exposed to them. Numerous studies have shown detriment to sperm health from chemical and environmental toxin exposure. Proper timing of intercourse. Determining when ovulation occurs isn’t something most first timers TTC think much about. According to an Albert Einstein College of Medicine 2019 study, only 20% of women knew they were fertile 3-6 days out of a month’s cycle, and 16% of woman in the study believed they were most fertile during their menses. A woman is typically most fertile for a 3-6 day window, approximately 14 days after start of flow in a regular 28 day cycle. Well timed intercourse often needs to be taught to couples TTC. Learning a woman’s fertile window is imperative for decreasing time to conception. Women are not typically taught the signs to identify the fertile window in their cycle. How Can a Woman Tell if She’s Fertile? The first sign a woman is fertile is by having a healthy, symptom free, regular cycle. Once unwelcome symptoms start to be experienced, there is a chance fertility is not optimal. Symptoms indicate hormone imbalances and imbalanced hormones can affect fertility. The second way patients can check their fertility, and fertile window, is by using what I call the “body’s ovulation prediction kit.” Cervical position: High in the vaginal vault with an open cervical os indicates ovulation. Cervical fluid: Noticeable egg-white in texture and slippery discharge, not having any cervical fluid changes throughout the month indicate support is needed. Cervical fluid is the superhighway in which sperm use to travel to the egg for fertilization. No changes, thick, or dry fluid does not allow for sperm to travel easily if at all to fallopian tubes.
Basal body temperature (BBT): Although this morning temperature reading does not tell you when you will ovulate, after a few months of mapping BBT, you will be able to identify the fertile window within a few days. This simple reading can give much insight concerning the health of the woman. The body’s ovulation prediction kit can help couples know when to have intercourse more frequently to increase chances of conception. Teaching couples how to identify a fertile window often reveals fertility problems when cervical fluid or BBT have unexpected patterns. Women that map BBT often learn they are pregnant prior to taking a test, since these readings don’t drop at the typical time before menses if fertilization has occurred. As simple as some of these suggestions to boosting fertility seem, it is the simple things that are often the most impactful, long lasting, and least invasive. It is often easy to excuse some of the above lifestyle habits when many people who eat poorly, drink heavily, smoke, and work with chemicals daily, to name a few detriments towards fertility, are able to conceive without any trouble. Genetics can explain some of the discrepancy seen when fertility struggles occur in otherwise healthy individuals but not in otherwise seemingly unhealthy individuals. This is why it is most important to be evaluated as a whole person, at a functional medicine level, and with great consideration on how your lifestyle, dietary practices, and mental resilience impact you and your partner. Wellness Comes First at the Edgewater Beach Hotel in Naples, FL By Diane Hayden, PhD
M
any years ago, someone told me there were only 7 beaches in the world that had the following: white sand as soft as satin, tranquil breezes, abundant sunshine, and temperatures that rarely dropped below 75 degrees. I’m not sure if there’s only 7, but I can tell you I found one of those beaches when I moved to Naples, Florida. When you step onto that pristine, silky sand for the first time, it’s something you’ll never forget. While I have the luxury of living here, I wanted to experience it from the view of a vacationer. I had the opportunity to do just that at the Edgewater Beach Hotel this past week. Laura Radler, GM, made our stay unforgettable with the many wonderful touches she provided! A 125 all-suite hotel situated on seven miles of white-sand beach, the Edgewater Beach Hotel offers guests a variety of activities as well as a tranquil setting to leave the stress of daily life behind. Believe it or not, there are very few beachfront hotels in Naples, so the Edgewater is truly one of a kind. What’s even better about this hotel – their strong focus on wellness. It makes perfect sense as Naples is a Blue Zone. Blue Zones are known across the globe as hotspots of rare longevity in the people that live there due to their diet and lifestyle. The Edgewater Beach Hotel provides an ideal environment for those seeking the best wellness hotel in Naples. They have developed a program of Wellness Retreats including wellness events, overnight wellness packages, Wellness Wednesday Happy Hours, Yoga on the beach, private guided meditation sessions, and self-care 38

wellness podcasts that were recorded right at the hotel. This wellness program was created in tandem with local experts and intended to help travelers feel their best while away from home. The Edgewater offers two heated swimming pools, a stateof-the-art Fitness Center, private and group personal training, in-suite massage, Holistic Nutrition, bike rentals, paddleboard and kayak rentals, and can also arrange water sport rentals, fishing charters, and other fun activities. We rented bikes and rode about two hours through the beautiful Moorings and Park Shore neighborhoods past awe-inspiring Banyan trees whose limbs arched overhead across the road. Even better, though, was relaxing on our cabana bed watching the gentle waves of the Gulf roll onto shore and taking in the dazzling sunsets from our private balcony. Everywhere you looked from this resort was a breathtaking view.
There are only a handful of places that I can remember staying where the views were so spectacular, I didn’t want to leave the room. This was one of them. The balcony stretched from the entire length of our bedroom to our living room. Imagine opening your eyes each morning to seeing miles of sea and sand stretched out before you. Just incredible. Just to give you an idea of the size of the balcony – it includes two Adirondack rocking chairs, a small breakfast table with two chairs and two chaise lounges! The suite also features a spacious living room and modern kitchen with a full-size refrigerator, microwave and granite counter breakfast bar. And maybe the best part of the Edgewater was sitting around the fire pit at night having lively discussions with the other guests. For me, that’s priceless and rarely experienced in most hotels or resorts where I’ve stayed.
But let’s get to the food! Every Wednesday from 4:30-6:30pm, Coast Restaurant features the Wellness Wednesday Happy Hour with healthy offerings of lite bites and boozy beverages by the beach. And you are treated to interactive activities held by guest speakers and local wellness experts from the Naples area. Coast makes healthy dining choices easy by offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner options that are inspired by the diets of the world’s Blue Zones. Here is just a sample of the menu: Breakfast: Avocado Toast: Whole wheat toast, cherry tomato compote (smoked salmon available to add).

The Ahi Tuna Poke with avocado, capers, ginger, garlic, soy sauce, sriracha aioli, and wonton chips was amazing and fresh. We also enjoyed the Red Berry Salad with baby spinach, goat feta cheese, candied walnuts, red onion, strawberry, balsamic vinaigrette. For entrees, don’t miss the Grilled Grouper (a must in Florida) with jasmine rice, asparagus, mango chutney, and the Seared Salmon with orange-ginger glaze, sautéed bell peppers, and basmati rice. Everything was delicious! One of the most unique things I’ve seen that they’re offering is the Suite Space with Remote Learning and Working. What

The Power of Forgiveness and Gratitude
By Kimberly Ruggiero, MA “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
W
hen asked to write an article about forgiveness, I felt hesitant. With so much contention in the world, why would anyone willingly surrender their strong position and forgive? I consider forgiveness to be a superpower, right up there with gratitude. They both require a capacity to hold negative feelings in a larger perspective; touching the grace beyond suffering. Anger and fear are intelligent emotions signaling that a boundary has been crossed. When people feel betrayed, diminished, oppressed or exploited, their instinct is to fight back, run away or dissociate. If hurt isn’t processed and resolved, seeking revenge or holding resentments often follow. This destructive energy then resonates in the body and out to others. “Holding a grudge is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.” - Buddha “Our brains are like Velcro for bad experience and Teflon for the good,” writes neuroscientist Rick Hanson, in Buddha’s Brain. When hurt, we impulsively want to hurt back. Forgiveness, however, requires that we stay present with our reactivity. It requires patience and courage to meet the moment with an open heart and feel what we feel. We do this, first by accepting our feelings of non-forgiveness. Holding onto anger may offer a temporary feeling of justice or control by feeding the ego, which wants to be right. There is, however, a destructive energy that remains 40

below the surface. It harms our health; increasing blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, anxiety, panic and discontentment. Unforgiveness is not bad, it simply keeps the suffering growing, bringing us more of what we don’t want. Learning to meet unforgiveness with self-compassion and acceptance begins the process of healing and raises our vibrational energy. The body moves from fight/flight to homeostasis. Forgiveness comes from a non-dual, holistic mind that recognizes oneness. It arises when we include other perspectives; shifting from certainty — it’s right or wrong, to inclusivity— it could be right from another perspective. Fear is palpable in the collective right now and it may seem counterintuitive to open heart and mind. When emotions surge, it’s harder to stay open because the decider brain (ancient ego-limbic system) shuts down the prefrontal cortex (the newest part of the evolving brain). The brain of our ancestors has served us well for thousands of years and it’s possible with mindfulness meditation or other intentional practices to cultivate the emerging holistic mind. The new mind and its capacity for non-duality can cultivate presence, forgiveness and gratitude, not as a strategic quid pro quo, but because it opens infinite creative possibilities for problem solving. Non-duality can recognize the dual as part of itself; not a bad part, just a part of the wiring. Awakening to wholeness is a natural unfolding of universal intelligence and the implicate order of an evolving self-organizing system. A non-dual holistic mind can express the need for reparation without blame or criticism because it sees the nature of our interdependence and accepts the reality of both, human darkness and light. For example, the dual mind might say, “I am angry at you. You are wrong.” With aware-
ness, the non-dual mind might say, “Anger is arising, let me investigate.” With the ability to feel the energy of anger but not become anger, we are able to respond from our wisest self; from love not fear. We don’t have to wallpaper over nonforgiveness with fake forgiveness. I suggest we come to recognize our capacity for presence with whatever arises inside; to begin to intimately know, feel and process all emotions. Nelson Mandala embodied the power of forgiveness. Anger did not rule his actions. He once said, “Forgiveness liberates the soul. It removes fear. That is why it is such a powerful weapon.” Eventually, we may come to realize that the world is our household and our capacity for forgiveness has the power to stop the war against ourselves and the planet. “Your heart is the light of this world. Don’t cover it with your mind.” — Mooji The Graduate Institute opens hearts and minds to nonduality. As an alumnus, program coordinator and adjunct faculty, I have experienced first-hand its transformative effects. I invite anyone interested in learning more to attend an open house or visit our mindfulness group where we gather for guided meditation, group share and topic discussion. If you would like more information, visit www.learn.edu. Kimberly Ruggiero is a program coordinator at The Graduate Institute as well as an artist, writer and coach.
