Are you still in pain? Effective treatment can be hard to find. Doctors and patients are frustrated by ineffective and generic oral medications. At Pioneer Health, 95% of new patients dramatically reduce their pain using a customized pain relief gel. WHY? Because WE take the time to find the right BlEnd that:
• Decreases your dosage of medication • Increases the preciseness of your therapy • Reduces side effects of common pain meds I injured my lower back and suffered immense pain and immobilization. After working with Gene and my doctor to create a customized pain formula, the pain was gone within two weeks! I was even able to make a 22 hour car trip to Alabama with no pain and it was as if I never hurt my back. I hope more doctors will listen to their patients and prescribe this more often. Pam S.

S
ummer is here and I have a question for you! When is the last time you let loose and had some serious fun? In the world we live in today, we are pushed harder and harder to manage every second of our time, work longer hours, be disciplined and take care of everyone but ourselves. Well, it’s about time we all remembered how to play and bring some fun back into our busy lives. It seems we’ve been conditioned to believe that after we graduate high school or college, the fun stops and the serious work begins. And while we do have to spend more time working now, we must not forget that having fun and playing is the lifeblood of what keeps us going. Summer is the perfect time to do this! Can any of you remember the last time you were on a swing, threw a Frisbee, body surfed the waves at the beach? These are truly life’s greatest pleasures for a kid, why not an adult. Some highly successful companies have brought a sense of humor and play into their workplace. Google allows employees to bring their pets and musical instruments to the office. As cited in Daniel Pink’s book, “A Whole New Mind”, the Wall St. Journal reported that more than 50 European companies have brought in “Serious Play” consultants that train executives with Lego building blocks. So, what is the definition of play for you? It could be hanging out with good friends, playing a sport you love, dancing with your children, watching a funny movie or jumping on that swing. Whatever it is, make sure that you are having fun doing it and it makes you laugh. Play is something that we should engage in on a daily basis even if only for a short period of time. On a weekly basis, we should try and find longer periods of time to really let loose and enjoy ourselves. Remember, part of the reason we are here in this lifetime is to have all different kinds of experiences, having fun and playing being one of them. It shouldn’t be an activity restricted to children or a certain period in your life. You should incorporate play into your life for your entire lifetime. Find one thing you love to do that brings you joy and makes you laugh and do it today or this weekend. Then try and incorporate more and more aspects of play into your daily and weekly schedule. You will find that these times of rest, rejuvenation and fun will allow you to return to your job or business with renewed excitement and mojo momentum to keep reaching for those ultimate goals and dreams. In health and happiness,

Loss of Bladder Control can be Embarrassing! CT Center for Bladder Health Opens in June The CT Center for Bladder Health was founded by Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner Alison J. Gorman, APRN. Ms. Gorman has over 30 years of experience in caring for older adults and in solving their unique problems. Although she is qualified to treat many bladder issues, her particular interest is in relieving urinary incontinence. Ms. Gorman created the CT Center for Bladder Health where patients may partner with her to address problems associated with the bladder in a comfortable, private and unhurried setting. Loss of bladder control, known as urinary incontinence (UI), is a common problem affecting 33 million people nationally. This is a conservative estimate given the sensitive nature of the issue. Urinary incontinence often goes unreported and is therefore under-treated. UI is often thought to be a natural consequence of aging, childbirth and illness. This is a common myth but the good news is that UI is treatable at any age. The CT Center for Bladder Health is dedicated to partnering with patients to restore continence using the latest in non-surgical methods. These include, but are not limited to: Biofeedback, Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation, Behavior Modification, Electrical Stimulation, Urge Suppression and Diet Modification. With focused and supportive treatments, the vast majority of patients experience significant improvement of their UI symptoms. Approximately 50% of individuals enjoy continence completely restored. Please call 860-265-6205 for a free consultation to see how CT Center for Bladder Health can help you live a more comfortable and worry-free life. For more information go to www.ctbladderhealth. com. The Path of Physical Healing: A Life Process
I
am motivated to write this article because everyday I bear witness to the ideology that there must be a “quick fix” for whatever ails you. Trust me, I wish everyone could get better in a few visits and live happily ever after. I am working on, but have not perfected, the proverbial magic wand so it may be an instrumental tool in our healthcare process. The truth is that with my thirty year cumulative experience in physical therapy, craniosacral therapy, somatoemotional release and massage therapy, I can say the quick fix is seldom either. We are programmed through media and lifestyle to expect fast and convenient service at all times. When it comes to healing our bodies and souls, this is just not the case. Our human bodies, coupled with our psyches, are amazingly complex; thus, the course of physical therapy (or other body/mind work) is really life process work.
What do I mean by life process work? Simply put, it is my way of saying that since our bodies have been with us since our very beginning, everything that has happened to us has an effect at the present time. From our time in utero, through birth process and all the minor and major bumps and bruises along the way, unresolved strains have contributed to the current state of our internal human environment. Anything that has happened to the body that has not been resolved will create a residual restriction pattern. Treatment is often a journey backwards through our lives and through our bodies with the goal of getting to the root origin of the problem. In this manner, not only do we heal the body in its correct order for resolution, we prevent more pain and dysfunction in the future. Most new patients come to be because of a specific pain. Sometimes the pain is acute and sometimes it is many years old. Almost always the origin of the pain can be 8
Natural Nutmeg July 2012
traced back in time along physical and emotional pathways. These pathways, or what I often refer to as restriction patterns, can be very simple to very complex or even chaotic. The body is an amazing organism. It can compensate and adapt on many levels and in many ways. However, there is a tipping point when the body cannot accommodate all the stressors. It begins to break down. Usually, the point when a person begins to think about an intervention is when this breakdown begins. For many, it may be months or years before they seek treatment. As I said earlier, the body is always compensating and adjusting so it can function at its highest level. Once it begins to breakdown, the compensation process becomes more drastic and chaotic. The longer this latter stage goes on, the more the body’s response to stressors, including some treatment, becomes protective and reactive. The longer it takes for the onset of intervention, the longer the resolution will take. Surgery may correct the specific, diagnosable issue, but it does not address all the precursors that lead to the final breakdown of tissues. Medication may alleviate symptoms, but does little to address the physical and emotional restrictive building blocks that are the root of the problem. Both of these measures address symptoms and not causality. You might ask, “What’s wrong with that? I feel better.” The answer is simple. All the contributing factors that gradually and cumulatively moved the body toward this place of dysfunction are still present. It is only a matter of time before a new problem emerges. When the new problem is the area just “fixed”, frustration and despair ensue. And yet, people come to my office after years and years in the breakdown stage and expect a cessation of symptoms within a few visits. It is impossible to achieve this in a manner that honors and respects the healing process of a person. How long does it take to heal? My answer, to the frustration of most, is “It takes as long as it takes.” Really? Is that
the best answer I can give? Isn’t there a more concrete answer out there? The truth is every person’s process to wellness is his or her own process. I have never treated two rotator cuff tears or two herniated discs that were identical in cause, presentation or response to treatment. Why? Because each person brings with them his/her own specific blueprint of physical, emotional, and energetic factors that play an important and active role in how the body performs and how he/she feels. The degree to how many restriction patterns are present, how they are potentially connected and the degree of internal chaos these patterns have created will be one factor influencing how long healing takes. A second factor is the degree to which residual emotional restrictions are marbleized with the physical restrictions. This is often the case, especially in chronic pain, and addressing these emotional issues must be part of the process for positive and long term outcomes. The third, and perhaps the most important factor, is the patient’s willingness and ability to follow through on this life process work. Every body has its own protocol for the process of wellness. My job is to facilitate this process. If you choose the quick fix approach, do it with the awareness that deeper structural and emotional issues may persist. And, if you can allow the process to unfold by gently peeling away the layers, then engage in physical and emotional life process work. Be curious. Be willing to live a more natural, vibrant and integrated way within your body and, thus, your life. Dj Horn is a Craniosacral-Applied physical therapist at Integrated Physical Therapy. She is in the process of completing her Masters in Mental Health Counseling. For information, please go to www.integratedlifetherapy.com. Are Allergies Making You Sneeze? Ragweed is one Major Culprit By Dr. Helene Pulnik, ND, LAc.
P
ollen allergies are the most common form of allergies, and the biggest culprit is ragweed; approximately 75% of people who are reactive to pollens are reactive to ragweed. In all, between 10 and 20% of Americans suffer with an allergic reaction to ragweed, Genes and environmental factors play a role in allergies. The immune system normally protects the body against harmful substances, such as bacteria and viruses. It also reacts to foreign substances called allergens, which are generally harmless and in most people do not cause a problem. But in a person with allergies, the immune response is oversensitive. When it recognizes an allergen such as pollen, it releases chemicals such as histamines, which fight off the allergen. This causes allergy symptoms. Common springtime allergy symptoms include: • Sneezing • Itchy, red or watery eyes, nose and throat • Runny nose • Congestion • Fatigue In some severely allergic individuals, rash, hives and breathing problems can occur. The unofficial kickoff of ragweed season starts as early as July. The season can last until the frost finally kills the plant, so the season can be longer in some areas than in others. There are 17 species of ragweed that grow in the US. Ragweed grows in every state in the US, but the East coast and the Midwest are the hardest hit by ragweed season. It grows in fields along roadsides, in vacant city lots, yards, etc. Whether you are in the city or in the country, you will most likely get exposed to ragweed as it is found in abundance in every region of the US, to some degree. Pollen released from ragweed is the most responsible substance for late summer and early fall runny nose and sneezing symptoms. Toward the end of summer, when the plants have matured, they are ready to release the pollens. The warmth and humidity after sunrise ensure the release of the pollen into the wind. The pollen grains are very small and lightweight and can travel great distances. Ragweed pollen has been measured in the air 400 miles out to sea and 2 miles up in the atmosphere, but the concentrations are highest near the source of the pollen. Most people will have some exposure to ragweed pollen, even those who do not have it growing in their immediate area. The good news is that the plant will only live for one season. However, each plant produces a very high level of pollens, ensuring future plants. An average ragweed plant can produce more than one million-pollen grains every day and up to one billion pollen grains in the single season of its lifetime. Ragweed seeds can live for decades in the soil and then begin to grow when conditions are right. If you suffer from symptoms when exposed to ragweed, be prepared for the upcoming ragweed season. Peak pollen times are
between 10am - 4pm so try to do any yard work before or after these times to reduce your exposure when outside. Keep your windows closed with the air conditioning on to further reduce your exposure but be aware that ragweed pollen can get inside your house by sticking to your clothing, shoes, bags, and pets. There are numerous websites available that will list the pollen levels for different parts of the country. If you want to see what the levels are in your immediate area, pulled up by zip code, try www. pollens.com for a complete listing of pollens and the daily level. Ragweed season will only last for a few months and then it will be gone again, until next year. At Glastonbury Naturopathic Center, we offer Advanced Allergy Therapy that can help to relieve or significantly reduce the symptoms associated with ragweed allergies. It is a non-invasive treatment that does not include needles, supplements, or medications. It is completely pain free and available to all ages, including infants. If you suffer from ragweed allergy symptoms, please call Glastonbury Naturopathic Center at 860-657-4105 and find out how we can help. NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT FOR
CARPAL TUNNEL
SYNDROME Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a compression of the major nerve that runs through the wrist. Numbness, tingling and weakness in the hand are common symptoms. Surgery is often recommended. But surgery can cause scar tissue, nerve damage, and can be ineffective. At VALLEY SPORTS PHYSICIANS we specialize in non-surgical treatment of CTS. Using a unique - and virtually painless - ultrasound-guided injection technique, we free the nerve from the surrounding scar tissue, relieving the pressure on the nerve. The procedure is done right in the office, takes only a few minutes, and is covered by insurance. Call today for more information or for an appointment. SPECIALIZING IN THE TREATMENT OF: • • • •

Be a Great Grandparent
L
et me get back to my favorite theme of love. True story from Cat Fancy Magazine: You have eight cats in your home and you and your husband smoke. One day you come home and one of the cats is very ill. The vet makes a diagnosis of lung cancer and the cat dies. You notice that your other cats are having respiratory problems too, so what do you do? If you were loved by your parents and not addicted to anything you would say stop smoking in answer to my question but you do not find that answer in pet magazines. Nine hundred years ago philosopher and physician, Maimonides said, “If people took as good care of themselves as they do their animals they would suffer fewer illnesses.” Well things haven’t changed. What the woman ended her page long article with was, “Doug and I have now banished ourselves to the backyard when we smoke. It may seem strange for a smoker to preach against smoking in her own home, but I love my cats more than the convenience of smoking indoors. We’re not killing our cats anymore - are you killing yours?” The magazine didn’t respond to my letter relating that it is apparently okay for pet owners to self destruct as long as their pets are protected and cared for. Folks love yourselves as much as you do your beloved pets. Get out your baby pictures and put them around the house and at work too. At home honor that kid and at work when people ask who the cute kid is answer, “Me.” You may be surprised how things improve at work. I put a picture of myself as a child on my clip on identification for the hospital and the guards always treated me nicely. I was born an ugly duckling so I don’t really have any baby pictures. Think about the tough time the ugly duckling had finding his true self and beauty when rejected by his mother. What do you think I had, which the duckling didn’t, that saved my life? My parents said, “We wrapped you in kerchiefs and put you in a covered carriage and hid you behind the house so we wouldn’t upset anyone.” So why didn’t I end up an addict or revengeful for the rejection? What did I have that saved me from feeling rejected and abandoned, as an infant, and saved my life? Another question may get you to realize the answer. Why do we call our children our children and their kids
our grandchildren and theirs, our great grandchildren? The change comes because as we age we become truly loving in an unconditional way. Yes, it was my grandmother who took me and to quote my Mom, “Poured oil over you and then pushed everything back where it belonged several times a day. I am sure I then went to feeling like the most loved kid in the world. In orphanages in the late 1800s the infant mortality rate was over 90% because no one touched the infants fearing they were spreading infections but it was the lack of touch that was killing the kids. Go get a massage and massage your family members and feel what a gift it is. Our son Keith is a massage therapist and when he massages me it is a gift which heals a lifetime of wounds. In the newborn nursery when an infant is massaged several times a day it gains weight 50% faster than kids fed the same amount but not massaged. The absence of touch and love can stunt a child’s growth too. So be a grand or great grand parent to all your family’s children no matter what age or generation they are. Exercising Safely in the Heat
T
his past winter was one of the mildest on record in Connecticut, and it may portend a particularly hot summer. This can be of concern to those of us who exercise outside. For healthy persons, body heat generated by heavy exercise increases 10 times over resting baseline. For well-trained athletes, it can increase 20 times. (Unfortunately, 80% of this energy is lost as heat; only a small percentage is converted to muscular work.) To prevent the body from overheating, this heat is transferred from the body core to the skin, where it is released. At rest, overheating is prevented primarily by convection (air moving across the body) and by conduction (heat moving from the deeper and warmer body tissues to the cooler surface). During exercise, on the other hand, evaporation of sweat becomes the major means of heat transfer. The body pushes more blood towards the cooler skin. But this can be a two-edged sword. While blood shunted towards the cooler skin improves heat loss, it also lowers the available blood and oxygen supply to the working muscles. When the air is dry (low humidity), sweat evaporation is much more efficient and body cooling occurs more easily. During humid conditions, the sweat does not evaporate as quickly, and body cooling is greatly slowed. This can result in heat exhaustion or in the much more serious heat stroke. (Keep in mind that riding a stationary bike or using a treadmill creates a pocket of increasing heat and humidity around your body, because no air is rushing past. Use a fan to keep this from happening.) In addition, sweat loss involves water loss, and, to a much smaller degree, loss of minerals such as sodium and potassium. This can quickly lead to dehydration, which can begin to occur long before you begin to feel thirsty. In fact, by the time your thirst mechanism kicks in you are already on the path to dehydration and your athletic performance begins to suffer.
So how do you protect yourself when exercising in hot and humid conditions? For starters, approach exercise based on this classic bit from the old comedian, Henny Youngman; “Doctor, it hurts when I do this.” “Well, stop doing it!” In other words, avoid exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Exercise during the cooler and drier parts of the day, either early morning or later evening, instead. 12
Natural Nutmeg July 2012
If that is not possible (or desirable), you need to get acclimated to exercising in the heat. Acclimatization is the process of physiological and psychological adaptation to a new environment, such as high heat and humidity. Such adaptation helps your body deal with the stresses of exercising in such conditions. Acclimatization takes 10-14 days of exercising under the same conditions you want to adapt to – high heat and humidity. Initial exercise sessions should be shorter and less intense than normal, building to normal workout levels over the next 7-10 days. If you compete, and most of your events occur during the hottest part of the day, you need to be training during these same times in order to acclimate. I used to race bicycles, but I did most of my training after school or work, later in the afternoon. My first race was at 10:00 AM on a blistering hot Sunday. I wasn’t used to riding in such conditions and, needless to say, I “hit the wall” pretty quickly. It was a painful but valuable lesson! Proper fluid intake and pre-hydration is another important tool to combat heat. For exercise lasting 30 minutes or less, you should drink 500 mL (about 17 oz) of fluid 1-2 hours before exercising to ‘fill the tank.’ If your exercise is 30-60 minutes long, drink 1 liter 1-2 hours before. And for exercise lasting longer than 1 hour, drink 1.5 liters 1.5-2 hours before exercise. Pre-hydrating ensures adequate fluid levels to start with, while still allowing time for the fluid to get out of the stomach before exercising. Avoid drinking more than a few sips within 15 minutes of exercise or a competitive event. The fluid sloshes around in the stomach, creating an uncomfortable feeling and can even cause some GI upset. Research presented at the April 2012 annual meeting of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (www.amssm.org) showed that, for intense exercise of 1.5-2 hours duration, athletes who drank 1.5 liters 2 hours before activity had better perceived performance and a sense of less effort required than athletes given the same amount of fluid intravenously. Drinking about 1 liter per hour of cold water during exercise, even if you don’t feel thirsty, will help prevent dehydration. Drinking another liter after exercise will help replace what was lost and prevent a negative fluid balance. It is critical to keep in mind that you are losing water even if you don’t feel thirsty, so stay ahead of the curve and prevent dehydration from occurring in the first place. Also, cold fluids are more quickly absorbed than are warm ones. On my training rides and during competitions I would half-fill my
water bottles and freeze them the night before, ensuring that I had plenty of cold water during my rides. You can also add plenty of ice cubes to a water bottle or CamelBack.
Sports Drinks—Are They In You? So what about sports drinks? Television commercials and print ads abound showing lean, muscular athletes drenched in sweat, guzzling the featured product (which then magically produces brightly colored sweat!), and then triumphantly vanquishing the opponent! The most important thing to keep in mind is that, after water, the first ingredient in most of these products is high fructose corn syrup. They are mostly sugar! Again, during relatively short bouts of exercise (30 minutes or shorter), there is no need for anything other than water to replace fluid losses. Beyond 30 minutes, particularly in higher heat or humid conditions, electrolyte loss—namely sodium and potassium depletion—begins to occur. Electrolyte loss is the rationale many people use to justify their use of sports drinks. Yet most sports drinks are infused with so much sodium and potassium as to be almost silly. In fact, the International Olympic Committee Consensus on Nutrition for Athletes states that there is no significant justification for the specific addition of electrolytes other than sodium to fluids consumed for post-exercise recovery. Furthermore, for most athletes, electrolyte losses are generally minimal. One study found that exercise in the heat did not result in losses of calcium, magnesium, or potassium among tennis players. Another study found that a sports drink containing potassium and sodium had no benefit over a drink containing sodium alone. Again, for relatively short bouts of exercise, electrolyte losses are

easily replaced by a standard diet without having to succumb to the dangers of the high fructose corn syrup-infused sports drinks. Ironically, the largest population group consuming these drinks is not athletes; it’s children! I am the team physician for the University of Hartford, an NCAA Division-I school. On the sidelines at our soccer, basketball and lacrosse games you will see large drink coolers emblazoned with the logo of the sponsoring sports drink company. What’s in those tubs? Water! The only place you’ll find sports drinks is in the hands of the kids walking away from the concession stand! Furthermore, drinking sports drinks immediately before and during exercise can cause gastrointestinal upset due to the high concentrations of sugar and salts. Do sports drinks have a place in exercise? The answer is a qualified “yes.” Drinks containing high quality quick-release carbohydrates, such as maltodextrose, can help improve performance in high-intensity sustained activity. For example, I perform intense weight training, lasting an average of over 90 minutes per session, three mornings a week. On those days I pre-hydrate with a protein drink containing a small amount of maltodextrose, and I add a small amount of maltodextrose to my water bottle during exercise. However, on the alternate days, when I perform high-intensity interval cardio training, I use plain water because my training sessions are shorter than 25 minutes. If you absolutely insist on consuming sports drinks, at the very least dilute them before and during exercise. Mixing them

with an equal amount of plain water dilutes the concentrations of sugar and electrolytes, markedly reducing the chances of G-I upset and lowering the staggering sodium and potassium loads to more reasonable levels.
Dress the Part Hydration addresses what we do to the inside as we exercise in the heat. But what about what we do on the outside? Here is a situation where the marketing hype holds up; high-tech clothing does work. New fabrics that breathe and wick moisture away from the skin keep you cooler. Recall that, in the heat, evaporation is the major cooling method. If the sweat and heat cannot escape the confines of the clothing then you create a sort of mini-sauna. Fabrics that absorb sweat and retain it, such as cotton, prevent the heat from escaping efficiently and can lead to performance declines at the least, and heat illness at the worst. Choose generally loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fabrics. Also, light colors that reflect heat are better than dark ones, which absorb heat.
Use of Sunscreens While sunscreen and sunblock lotions can help protect against developing skin damage and skin cancer, they also can retard the evaporation of sweat. This can lead to a potentially serious rise in core body temperature. If you exercise before 10 AM or after 3 pm there really is no compelling reason
to use sunscreens; the sun’s rays are too low to pose much danger. If you must exercise during peak sun hours, at least use a shortsleeved shirt and apply the sunblock to the remaining exposed skin. This eliminates the need to lather the majority of body surface areas with sunblock, allowing the sweat to pour freely from your chest, shoulders and back.
Heat Illness Heat illness encompasses a continuum of conditions ranging from heat cramps to heat stroke. At the most extreme end of the spectrum is heat stroke. Defined as core body temperature of greater than 40.6 °C (105.1 °F), heat stroke is due to dysfunction of the body’s temperature regulating mechanisms. It is a life-threatening condition and requires immediate emergency care. Symptoms of heat stroke include: • Severe headache • Dizziness and feeling light-headed • A flushed or red appearance to the skin • Lack of sweating • Muscle weakness or cramps • Nausea • Vomiting • Fast heartbeat • Fast breathing • Feeling confused, anxious or disoriented • Seizures In such cases call emergency medical personnel immediately. Take the person into an air-conditioned building or a cool, shady place. Remove all unnecessary clothing to help cool him or her down. Try to fan air over the person while wetting the skin with water. You can also apply ice packs to the armpits, groin, neck and back. These areas are rich in blood vessels close to the surface
of the skin, and cooling them with ice packs can help draw down core body temperature. At the other end of the spectrum is heat exhaustion. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include: • Heavy sweating • Feeling weak and/or confused • Dizziness • Nausea • Headache • Fast heartbeat • Dark-colored urine, indicating dehydration If you think you have heat exhaustion, get out of the heat quickly. Rest in a building that has air-conditioning. If you can’t get inside, find a cool, shady place. Drink plenty of water or other fluids. Do NOT drink alcohol or caffeinated drinks; these can make heat exhaustion worse. Take a cool shower or bath, or apply cool water to your skin. Take off tight or unnecessary clothing. If you do not feel better within 30 minutes, contact your doctor or head to the emergency room. Untreated heat exhaustion can progress to heatstroke.
Summary As is typically the case, the best treatment of dehydration and heat-related illness is to prevent them in the first place. Plan carefully for exercising in the heat, including proper clothing, proper training (including gradual acclimatization), and proper hydration. Submitted by Paul D. The Role of Exercise in Autism: Beyond Weight Loss
E
veryone knows that exercise is highly beneficial, yet many have trouble finding time to work it into their busy schedules. School days are getting more and more jam-packed with learning activities and daily recess and gym classes are often neglected. Growing up, gym classes and recess used to be daily activities in grammar schools. The teachers gladly sent everyone outside for recess to get some fresh air and run around, whether it was rain or shine. If nothing else, it taught us to dress appropriately for the weather, how to interact with others, and gave us an opportunity to blow off some steam. Now, my son is lucky if he gets recess once a week and gym twice a week. As the day gets sucked up with increasing class work, testing, and homework, exercise is becoming more and more important for our children, not only for their health and weight, but amazingly for their learning and behavior as well. Several studies have shown that exercise can be therapeutic for children, especially those with autism spectrum disorders and their siblings. Gabriels found that irritability, lethargy, hyperactivity, and stereotypic behaviors like hand flapping were significantly reduced after weekly horseback lessons performed for 10 weeks. Motor, verbal and language skills greatly improved with
the horseback riding, including using more words with better understanding, increased muscle strength and tone, better sharing with others and compromising, and even fewer meltdowns. Hameury discovered similar improvements in attention, perception, motor adjustment, contact, emotion, and communication after just one hour of equine-assisted therapy. Not only being around calm animals, but also the physical exertion can have a calming effect and help reduce the anxiety or fight-flight response in autistic children. Looking locally, Giant Steps CT is a private state-approved school located in Southport that specializes in teaching autistic children

ages 3-21 years and offers a horsebackriding program to its students. Healing with Horses, LLC located in Uncasville and Camp Care, Inc in Columbia, CT also specialize in helping people with autism spectrum disorders and provide therapeutic horseback riding in a safe environment. If horses aren’t in your budget, a study by Prupas found that vigorous exercises reduce stereotypic behaviors. Pan found that autistic children positively interacted with their peers at the highest rate during vigorous exercise like that found in gym class, slightly less so during recess, and least of all when not exercising. Celiberti confirmed this result, finding that vigorous exercise such as jogging significantly reduced “out of seat” or bouncing in the chair in the classroom, hand flapping, finger twirling, and eye squinting for at least 40 minutes after the exercise and that these autistic activities never returned back to their baseline rate during that timeframe. The vigorous exercises were only performed for 5 - 10 minutes. Allison found that 20 minutes of jogging during two week intervals significantly decreased aggressive behaviors in autistic children. These results aren’t just true for children either. Elliot found that 20 minutes of jogging decreased maladaptive and stereotypic behaviors in autistic adults ages 22 – 41 years of age. Rosenthal-Malek found that after 20-minute jogs, autistic teens also improved in their work related performance and correct academic responding, along with a significant reduction in self-stimulating behaviors. This may be due to the increase in adenosine in the brain, which has been found to greatly decrease autistic behaviors, as noted by Masino. Adenosine is found endogenously, promotes sleep, reduces convulsions, protects your nerves, and reduces anxiety. Interestingly, self-stimulatory behaviors also provide an increase in adenosine and may be the reason why these activities are performed in autistic children. Replacing these behaviors with other exercises that can also increase adenosine, appear to be incredibly beneficial by not only reducing self stimulatory behaviors but also promoting REM sleep, decreasing seizures, increasing phrase speech, and appear to be even more helpful for Asperger’s syndrome than severely autistic children who were non-verbal. Beyond a general increase in adenosine,
water exercises were found to be even more beneficial when combined with assistance from peers or siblings of those on the autism spectrum. The peers and siblings were taught to “be friendly, talk softly, and provide praises” and were trained in how to assist in the swimming lessons. The 60-minute swim classes consisted of a 10 minute warm up, 20 minutes of teacher instruction, 15 minutes of peer or sibling instruction, and 15 minutes of games and were held twice weekly for 16 weeks. Chu and Pan found that these peer- or sibling-assisted water activities significantly improved social and physical interactions in autistic children, lessened their reliance on teacher instruction, and improved their aquatic skills beyond what teachers were able to accomplish alone! It’s amazing how a little kindness from other kids can go such a long way to improve confidence and social interactions! Pan also found that the siblings of autistic children enhanced their motor skills, physical fitness, and swimming ability in these lessons, making it beneficial for everyone involved. You can find special swim classes at Physical Therapy (PT) centers like Faulkner’s PT in Wallingford or the Star Hill Family Athletic Center in Tolland, which hosts “Swimming on the Spectrum.” Check your local area for more swim classes and feel free to bring your other children and their friends! Other types of exercises can help improve health and behavior. Goodarzi found that weight-bearing exercises along with vitamin D and calcium significantly increased bone mineral density in autistic children and reduced risk of fractures. A type of Karate training called Kata, where autistic children learned basic karate moves like punching as well as combination sequences like down block, upper block, middle level stepping punch, and then sword hand block, helped improve behavior. Bahrami found that by training four times weekly in Kata for 14 weeks greatly reduced stereotypic behaviors in autistic children. So it’s important to encourage your child to exercise during gym, recess, after school activities and at home! A quick jog around the block, kicking a soccer ball up and down the field, or running and shooting hoops from basket to basket can be a great diversion and provide that quick burst of exercise needed to release adenosine and create a much needed hour or more of calm! Adenosine-increasing activities included running for 15 minutes, jogging for 20 minutes, swimming for 30 minutes, swinging for 30 minutes, jumping on a trampoline for 10 minutes, and even a leisurely stroll for 30 minutes. Telling your child’s teachers about these studies may help them get excited about exercise as well and help them encourage the kids to run around at recess! If you are concerned about which type of exercise may be appropriate for your child, ask your physician or physical therapist before starting a new class or activity. They may also provide you with some good resources for local activities, groups and classes. Other resources include websites like www.autismlink.com, which allows you to search for providers of summer camps, activities, respite, and different therapies in your area and even in different states if you are looking to travel. Some useful Connecticut-based websites include www.autismsocietyofct.org, www.ct-asrc.org, www.ctfeat.org, and www.autismfamiliesct.org. Most importantly, remember to keep exercising! It will help your child learn more and behave better! How Does Qigong Heal?
O
ver 4000 years ago Chinese medicine said, “Blood is the mother of Qi”. The Old Testament Leviticus 17:11, “For the life of the flesh is in the Blood.” During Qigong practice we feel a powerful pulsation of blood in our body. Often it takes people by surprise how warm they feel after making just a few hand movements. Qigong moves a lot of blood and generates a lot of energy without lots of movement or stress. Often people ask “What is a Qi blockage?” It is simply a small area where the blood cannot go, or an area where disease can occur. For example, some people may have a knot in their stomach or bad digestion. Qigong usually improves this condition. Blood can work itself through closed off capillaries when a person is relaxed and increasing Qi in that area. Wherever Qi goes, blood follows. Normal healthy people use about 60% of the circulatory system. When our Qi increases this percentage also goes up. Blood flow to the brain and organs is improved, therefore our health is greatly benefited. The electrical aspect of Qigong also plays a role.
18
Natural Nutmeg July 2012
So how is this any different than jogging? In Qigong the body is totally relaxed, yet the blood is mobilized to flow powerfully. Because there is no stress response or cortisol release, which contracts blood vessels, the blood can enter areas that may have been blocked off for years. Microcirculation to the forehead is increased and digestion is greatly improved. Imagine the same blood circulation you get from jogging… while standing still completely relaxed. No other exercise offers this level of circulation to organs & endocrine glands. Stiff shoulders beware… Qi and Blood coming through.
Health Benefits and Effects of Qigong Qigong has powerful health-promoting effects: (1) Improves the motion of blood, warms the blood and enhances whole body circulation. (2) Stimulates appetite, sexual function, assimilation of nutrients and digestion/elimination (3) Accelerates metabolism, weight loss, decreases need for sleep (4)
Bolsters the immune system by reducing cortisol, a known inhibitor of cytokine production (5) Develops dexterity, reflexes, and prevents Osteoporosis in clinical studies (6) Opens arteries allowing greater brain-based microcirculation to prevent Alzheimer’s disease (7) Enhances mental acuity, focus & concentration. The Qi draws focus and trains the mind. (8) Helps us to calm down, relax and become more peaceful. (9) Harnesses the power of True Source, remarkably improves results of hands on healing, such as Reiki, and helps spiritual growth.
Healthcare Practitioners REALLY Need Qigong Healthcare practitioners can prevent themselves from getting drained by seeing lots of sick patients. This is a fact for many therapists and nurses that I encounter. Each year we train hundreds of registered nurses and nearly all of them complain that they constantly feel drained. Often massage therapists take on the aches and pains of their clients. While this may sound superstitious I assure you the phenomena is real. Often doctors who specialize in a certain aspect of medicine are exposed to a certain “Energy Information Signal” so frequently that they end up with the same problems they are surrounded by. What is a healer supposed to do? By using Qigong one can easily cleanse their energies. Dianne Dougherty is a nurse that we trained who says she is no
longer affected by other people’s energy after learning Qigong. Now she has energy to finish her shifts. She is dedicated to a daily practice.
Qigong in the Media Oprah Winfrey’s beloved Dr. Oz said on her internationally viewed show, “If you want to live to 100… do Qigong.” He also said, “Qigong is the best longevity exercise”. After this November 1st, 2007 show I feel it is a short time before Qigong is embraced by the American mainstream audience. There are thousands of scientific studies that show Qigong has helped people to reverse cancer, diabetes and heart disease. If you want to read these scientific studies visit QigongInstitute.org where you can find the largest database of scientific papers on Qigong’s effects.
Why Practicing in Groups is the KEY! Healing occurs in Qigong when one raises their energy high enough to push through the blockages of the nervous and circulatory system. Whatever Qi touches will be rejuvenated by it, however people are often blocked and thus need stronger energy to clear the pipes so Qi reaches the problem areas. Some schools teach that people need the help of a powerful master to send strong energy for that initial boost. After personally training with 7 high level Qigong masters I do not believe this to be true. The most effective way to begin the healing process is to enter a large group energy field. They knew it China when they repeatedly gathered 30,000 at a time and people were getting up out of wheel chairs. I saw a retired nurse enter my seminar wheeling a walker. On the 4th day she was walking laps around the massive ballroom without her walker. In all honesty, the Qigong is very powerful, but it is the group energy that turns it into overdrive. Every person has a biological magnetic field. When a group of even 3 people practice together the results are at least double. A larger field is created than any of us could generate on our own in the big Qigong events. Being in this high amplitude energy is the single fastest way to jumpstart ones internal energy. This is the understatement of the century. On August 4th-7th, 2012 the QI REVOLUTION seminar “4-Days of Qigong Training for $99” comes to Omni New Haven Hotel. Qigong Practitioner Jeff Primack and 25 other instructors will teach all 3 levels of Qigong Healing & Breathing Applications for $99. Seating is limited. The Secret Life of Hair
T
here are many parts of the body that can communicate not only the health of a single organ system, but actually the whole body. There are over 100,000 to 350,000 of these messengers in our scalp… our hair follicles. Our hair tells not only where we are, but where we’ve been and maybe even what we need in our journey ahead. Part of any naturopathic physical exam would be to consider hair texture, strength and health as part of looking at the whole person. All hair has a natural cycle of growth, and with age the cycle normally slows and less hair will continue to grow. The length of the growth cycle determines how long the hair will be, which is why you have shorter hair on your arms and legs than your head. Hair growth is random and does not seem to cycle with seasons. Scalp hair grows about a centimeter a month and about 90% of your scalp hair should be growing at any given point. Hair loss should be between 50 to 100 hairs daily.
What Nurtures Hair Water One of the most simple ways to nurture the whole body definitely also feeds hair. Hair is made up of between 10 and 15% water! It is necessary for the same reason your body likes it, to help both biochemical and physiological properties. If you are dehydrated chronically, then so is your hair! Never mind moisturizing conditioners, when you feed your body, you feed your hair too.
Nutrients Many nutrients support hair growth. Looking at the whole body, one can check for signs of deficiencies that may affect hair. Zinc is very important for hair growth, as well as nails and skin. If wounds are slow to heal or there are white patches on nails, there may be a zinc deficiency. Vitamin A is also important for hair, and often manifests in different skin conditions if deficient. Omega 3 essential fatty acids and iron also feed hair. Even if you are not fully iron deficiency anemic, you still could have low iron stores, known as ferritin. Hair is the first to get neglected when it comes to nutrients, so it’s very important to have adequate levels of all of these.
What Speaks to Hair Hormones The thyroid, pituitary gland and sex hormones all play a large role with communicating growth and loss of hair. Hypothyroid, or low functioning thyroid, is one of the main culprits of hair loss. Also, if hair loss on the scalp is occurring but simultaneously hair growth on other parts of the body, particularly the face, sex hormones could be imbalanced as well. After pregnancy, with menopause or in some hormonal conditions, hair loss can be addressed with balancing the hormones. Medications Many medications can cause hair loss. Before reading too much into changes in
your hair, be sure it isn’t a medication you are taking that is giving you a side effect. Antibiotics, anti-coagulants, anti-depressants, anti-epileptics, ACE inhibitors, chemotherapy, beta blockers, Clomid, gout medication, some cholesterol lowering drugs, NSAIDS and ulcer medications may accelerate hair loss and reduce hair re-growth. Discuss with your doctor if you notice changes to your hair with these medications.
What Hair Can Say Mineral Content and Heavy Metals Once something is deposited into hair, there is no going back. The body may put extra minerals or unwanted heavy metals in hair to help excrete them from the body. There is growing evidence that heavy metals can be detected simply by testing a sample of scalp hair. Mineral content of the body can be tested this way as well. Food Intolerances Anti-gliadin antibodies occur when part of your immune system reacts to wheat gluten. When this happens, there can be cross reactivity in your digestive tract, a condition becoming more and more commonly known as celiac disease. There is now research showing that these antibodies may also have cross reactivity with other tissue, including hair follicles. Though classic symptoms of celiac disease are digestive complaints, hair loss is definitely considered a symptom as well. There are parts of our body that speak more about our whole health than others. Oriental medicine often uses the tongue and ear with evaluating and treating the whole person. Both Eastern and Western medicine, conventional and naturopathic medicine alike see hair as an important barometer of health. Dr. Lauren Gouin is a board certified naturopathic physician with a family practice in Manchester, CT. Her office is now accepting new patients and the physicians are innetwork with most insurance companies. To make an appointment, call (860) 533-0179. See ad on page 2.

ere in America, where so many diseases are so prevalent, so rampant and in many cases epidemic, we don’t see many people studying the vast availability of information about nutritional cleansing and health or how they can bring vibrant health back into their lives. The fact is that most people in America stopped learning about how to become healthy with their last health class in high school. Just look at the record sales for sugar, energy drinks, unhealthy diet pills, soda pop and fast food. A healthy body is always attracted to healthy food and an unhealthy body is always attracted to unhealthy food and that’s a fact! Think about it, we spend our lives using up our health in search of wealth only to spend our wealth, later in life, in search of health. Did you know that 60% of all the bankruptcies in America today are a result of medical and hospital expenses, many a result of obesity? Did you know that the elderly purchase about 53% of all the medications in North America? Health knowledge is coming to the forefront today faster than ever before as a result of the internet. The availability of health knowledge and data is doubling every five years now, so let’s seize this wonderful knowledge, let’s immerse ourselves into it and apply it into our daily lives. Today can indeed be the first day of the rest of your life. Embrace your health, protect your health and preserve your health for the many wonderful years yet to come. I don’t know about you but when I’m in my 90’s I want to be active and healthy. I want to play with my great grandkids and go to their football games and their dance recitals. I want to be with them when they graduate from high school and college. I want to see them get married. I certainly don’t want to be so fat that I can’t keep up with them. I don’t want to be on a half dozen medications or incapacitated with weak bones or a weak brain. If you don’t want an old, fat, unhealthy body dependent upon drugs and medicines, then take better care of yourself starting right now. Your reward could be 10 or 20 more years of vibrant, healthy living. Did you know that the number of prescriptions written for medicines and drugs has doubled in the last eight years? Last year almost 4 billion prescriptions were written in the United States alone. That’s about 1300 pills for every man, woman and child in this country. Over 60 million people in North America are taking antidepressant medicines because they have a tough time handling the daily chores of life. Seven million people are taking medications for the thyroid. Many millions more are taking drugs for the stomach, for libido, for headaches, for bone and muscle challenges, for intestinal challenges and for the heart. It certainly appears that we are a drug dependent society, doesn’t it? If you get into a bad accident and are torn apart here in America, we have the very best surgeons in the world to put you back together. If you contract a terrible disease, forget it because we are way down the list, almost at the bottom of the list when it comes to treating or curing disease. Every disease known to man is being 22

cured somewhere in the world and it is being done at an affordable price. This is why so many afflicted people are now travelling overseas to get help. If you want to control and even avoid disease and obesity: 1. Give your body nutrient-dense foods that are power-packed with cleansing nutrition. 2. Take a 20 minute brisk walk, bounce for 15 minutes a day on a mini trampoline, sit in a sauna for 15 minutes a day or deep breathe slowly in and out 20 times, 6 - 10 times a day. You will be amazed. Walking, breathing, sitting in sauna and bouncing helps your body to cleanse itself, especially when used in conjunction with cleansing. 3. Your body needs clean air to breath. Well, in this day and age you are not going to get that. Industrialization and environmental pollution where there is no escape makes that impossible. No place on earth today can escape the wrath of pollution, not even the highest mountain. But supplementing with a cleansing system helps immensely in controlling the damage this dirty air causes! Many health professionals and researchers today attribute all this “bad stuff” to the ill health of America and the obesity problem. If it is in the soil, if it is in the water and if it is in the air we breathe, it is in us. Here in North America the land of thousands and thousands of beautiful lakes, many of them are so contaminated with chemicals, pollution and heavy metals that they no longer support life or vegetation and that is a sad thing! There are literally thousands upon thousands of trout in these lakes over 3 pounds in size, afflicted with disease and/or fungus. Clean water is practically impossible to get anymore. Research has shown that there are over 700 chemical contaminants in our drinking water, water that actually comes from the tap. Think about all those chemicals that are leached into water from those plastic water bottles you drink from. Think about all the junk that gets into your water from farm crops and from the acid rain that falls from the sky! Think about all the junk that gets into our soils and our water from petrochemicals. There is hundreds of thousands of tons of toxic material. Your body needs clean, healthy foods and that’s awfully tough to get today! Not only has the heat used in the processing of your foods killed the life preserving vitamins, minerals and enzymes but there are over 5,000 chemicals in the form of preservatives, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, fillers and colorings used in your foods and many more used in the packaging and processing. Not even glass packaging can protect your body today. Much contamination is already in the foods and juices long before they are packaged. Most people and most doctors are unaware of the dangers associated with residual impurities and chemicals in the body that we have been eating, drinking and breathing for years and years. Did you know that all these chemicals and impurities are a major contributing factor to the overweight problem we have here in America, as well as to ill health? Did you know that you can do something
about this? Yes you can by doing some things that are very, very simple! As a country, we process everything, including foods that we eat, the water that we drink and all that stuff we put on our skin. We use many of the 83,000 chemicals to accomplish this. As human beings we have become walking cocktails of chemicals and toxins. What is it that makes people sick? Eating too much, eating the wrong kind of foods, genetics, stress and here is something that will surprise you, chemicals and toxins. To resolve the health and overweight challenges of today one must incorporate a cleansing technology. Think about it! What would happen if you did not brush your teeth for 30 years? What would happen if you did not change the oil and filter in your car for 30 years? What would happen if you did not change or clean the filters in your heating and air conditioning system for 30 years? What would happen if you did not bathe and shower for 30 years? Your body has 70,000 miles of blood vessels and 80,000 plus miles of lymphatic vessels. It also has thousands of filters. So why do we spend most of the time cleansing ourselves from the outside in instead of from the inside out? Imagine losing 10-15 pounds in 9 days and slimming down to the weight you only dream about. Imagine having more energy than you ever thought possible. Imagine beautiful, strong skin, hair and nails once again. Imagine energy and stamina beyond your wildest dreams. Look at doing a 9 – day cleanse and the magic will happen. Tony and Randi Escobar have helped hundreds of thousands of people discover their passion and potential as well as helped them achieve their goals of health, extraordinary wealth and happiness. July is National Ice Cream Month!
J
uly is National Ice Cream Month in the United States! Having fun in the sun and cooling off with a messy, drippy, ice cream snack sounds appealing to many of us. We’ve always thought of the summer months as a wonderful opportunity to redirect our family’s ‘health plan’. For the most part, we have more control over day-to-day activities with children being out of school. Many of us try to decrease our work schedules to spend more time with our families. During these months of warm weather, we have great opportunities to make important changes in our home that will help us welcome the new school year with greater health and vitality. Here are some ideas: 1. Ice Cream! How about a flavorful, healthier option. There are several naturally sweetened ice cream companies such as “Luna and Larry’s Coconut Bliss”—they offer a fuller fat version of ice cream that is made out of coconut and is sweetened with agave nectar. They also have ice cream bars for those hot summer days. 2. Iced Green Tea: Green tea is wonderful to promote healthy liver function. It is better to use a higher quality loose-leaf green rather then individual bags that are comprised largely of synthetic material and chemicals. A great source for green tea can be found at: www.InstituteOfIMT.com. If your children insist on sweetening the tea, consider using a natural sweetener like honey or stevia. 3. Dr. Tom’s Ginger Lemonade: This ‘medicinal’ lemonade is a terrific drink to have warmed or chilled. Ginger is a wonderful immune booster. It has also been shown to help significantly with aching muscles as well as reducing muscle cramping. Lemons are also very good for our immunity by way of being strong anti-bacterial and anti-viral agents. Lemon juice aids in digestion as well. See below for this wonderful recipe. In addition to enjoying this as a cool drink during a hot summer day (or a warm tea on a cold winter night), you can also pour this mixture into an ice pop mold and
24
Natural Nutmeg July 2012
make it into ginger lemonade ice popsicles! 4. Beware of synthetic electrolyte drinks that are full of processed/refined sugars and chemicals. Television advertising for products like Gatorade can be deceiving. In fact, by ingesting high amounts of refined sugars such as those found in these types of drinks, you can significantly affect the health of your body and promote syndromes like diabetes as well as other illnesses. Many children present with behavioral and learning challenges secondary to a high intake of refined sugars. Electrolytes can be found in healthier drinks, including sparkling mineral water. A great way to get this type of water into your family is to make juice spritzers by adding a shot of fresh fruit juice to a glass of sparkling mineral water. 5. Eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables! Fruits and vegetables have many vital enzymes and nutrients to support a healthy gut as well as a strong immune system. A great way to find fresh produce is at farmers markets and Community Supported Agriculture farms (CSAs). There are many farmers markets throughout Connecticut in the summer. A good web source for finding local farmers markets and CSAs is: www.ctnofa. org/Farms.php. 6. One easy way to get healthy fruit into your diet is by making fun ice pops with your family. It’s as simple as putting fresh and/or frozen fruit into the blender and then pouring the mixture into an ice pop mold, freezing, and enjoying on a hot summer day. If you have a strong blender, such as a Vita Mix, you can add healthy veggies into the mixture and hide the flavor with the fruit. Also, if you want to have your children take certain nutritional supplements, a great way to make them more palatable is to mix them in a powdered form into the ice pops. If the flavor becomes bitter, you can always add a natural sweetener such as honey. 7. On a hot summer day it is helpful to eat cooling foods, which are foods that help to cool the body on an energetic level. Fruits such as melons and pineapple as well as
tropical fruits are considered cooling foods. 8. Get lots of sunshine! For many of us, the sun has become a feared aspect of the summer because of the heated debate about skin cancer. It is important to keep in mind that the sun is essential for optimal health, including production of vitamin D, which is important for bone health. When we lather on excessive sunblock, we prevent the sun from optimally stimulating production of vitamin D. Think in terms of moderation—if you choose to use sunblock use it sparingly, and use it primarily on areas that commonly burn. In addition, use a hat. Have your children use rash guards when they are playing in the pool. 9. Try an Elimination Diet: Eliminate a particular food group or potentially allergenic food for a period of time, and then gradually reintroduce that food back into your diet to determine its effect on your body. Elimination diets are most successful when maintained for up to three months. There are some foods that might be better left out of your diet long term. For example, some foods that often are allergens are soy, nuts, dairy, eggs, and corn. Certain other foods, such as gluten, are considered pro-inflammatory; they cause inflammation in everyone. Gluten is found in wheat, oat, rye, and barley. In Connecticut, there are so many available options for a diverse gluten-free diet. Even in regular grocery stores such as Stop and Shop, Shop Rite, etc. there are a ton of gluten-free foods that are delicious! In addition, there are many gluten-free friendly restaurants in the area that offer wonderful food options. Some examples are: Treva (West Hartford), Max Restaurant Group, Bricco’s and Grants (West Hartford), Besitos (West Hartford), Arugulas (West Hartford), Blue Elephant Trail (West Hartford), Thai Palace (Bloomfield), Ginza’s (Bloomfield), Plan B (Simsbury and West Hartford), and many more.
10. Calcium Lactate: Most of us consider calcium to be an important nutrient for bone health. In fact, calcium is an essential nutrient for circulation as well as overall health. Specifically, calcium lactate is less known for its skin supporting capacity. Calcium lactate can very successfully help to prevent and reduce the effects of sunburns. Keep in mind that when supplementing with calcium, it is also important to supplement with magnesium. 11. Drink lots and lots of water! Many children and adults become dehydrated in the summer. Often, dehydration in children can lead to constipation as well as other issues. Be sure to make water available throughout the day. 12. Exercise outdoors: For many of us, the warm summer months manifest a new found interest in exercise and fitness. If the weather is too hot during the midday to exercise, consider going out for a brisk walk early in the morning or late in the evening. Use this as family time and have the whole family enjoy a walk together.
Dr. Tom’s Ginger Lemonade Recipe: Benefits: Immune booster, increases vitality, great tasting, fun for the whole family! Ingredients: ½ lb raw ginger, washed and chopped (peeling is optional) 6 medium lemons, juiced 1 cup raw honey Directions: 1. Place chopped ginger in 1 quart of water 2. Bring water to a boil 3. Lower heat to simmer and let simmer for 20 minutes 4. Strain ginger while liquid is still hot 5. Add raw honey into hot liquid 6. Add 3 more quarts of water 7. Add juice of 6 lemons 8. Chill liquid in fridge 9. Enjoy chilled on hot summer day (or warmed on cold winter day!) Continuing the Green Living Movement
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world: Indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.” ~ Margaret Mead
W
e face unprecedented issues in the world today – issues that we can address by joining together. It’s time to make a difference for our planet and ourselves! There’s power in numbers and intention, as the “Occupy Wall Street” movement clearly demonstrated. However we also became more aware of how powerful corporations are, and how effectively they work with government. To be heard, we need to focus our efforts collectively, become familiar with available resources, decide what we can do, get involved, and join with like-minded people. This is the proven route to success. Grassroots advocacy works. Resources to help you get started are included at the end of this article. Grassroots advocacy is a form of advocacy which originates among concerned citizens, rather than being orchestrated by organizations or companies. The term grassroots refers to a movement which grows spontaneously and naturally, without encouragement from outside sources, much like the roots of stubborn grass. People can participate in grassroots advocacy on many levels, ranging from writing letters to
26

political leaders to organizing educational workshops for members of their community (www.wisegeek.com). One of the difficult aspects of the Green Living Movement is that consumers are the moving force behind it. We the people buy and consume non-green products from manufacturers, businesses and corporations. However, the only motivator for the manufacturers and corporations to produce green products is sales. We have collectively demanded green products; now we need to take the steps to hold manufacturers and corporations accountable. We need to let them know they need to change their practices. Without the efforts of changes in manufacturing, they will continue to produce toxic products. The spring to offset the billionaire company Monsanto who moves the political machine in Washington, promoting their Roundup resistant plants (GMOs), is to have billions of grassroots advocates like you and I form consistent multiplying resistance which collectively advocates against the corporations lobbying. This is accomplished through grassroots advocacy and organization.
Back in the early 1980s I got involved with MASSPIRG because I believed in recycling plastic bottles. The PIRGS are Public Interest Research Groups. MASSPIRG is based in Massachusetts. CONNPIRG is based in Connecticut. The PIRGS are both national and state based. “U.S. PIRG is an advocate for the public interest. When consumers are cheated, or the voices of ordinary citizens are drowned out by special interest lobbyists, U.S. PIRG speaks up and takes action. We uncover threats to public health and well-being and fight to end them, using the time-tested tools of investigative research, media exposés, grassroots organizing, advocacy and litigation. U.S. PIRG’s mission is to deliver persistent, result-oriented public interest activism that protects our health, encourages a fair, sustainable economy, and fosters responsive, democratic government.” The State PIRGs emerged in the early 1970s on college campuses across the country. The PIRG model was proposed in the book “Action for a Change” by Ralph Nader and Donald Ross. Ross was a law student with an internship with Nader, later became the director of New York Interest Research Group, Inc. (NYPIRG). Back in 1982, MASSPIRG led the fight to pass the original Bottle Bill. As a result of this first statewide recycling program, today, 80% of bottles and cans covered under the Bottle Bill are recycled instead of buried or burned. I learned about MASSPIRG through attending Quinsigamond Community College and felt motivated and passionate about doing something to stop the plastic waste. This grass roots advocacy group was successful and found ways to work with local, state and federal government. However, now only 20% of the containers not covered under this deposit law end up being recycled. That adds up to more than 1 billion water, energy and sports drink bottles per year that get thrown in our landfills or burned in incinerators. There is still a lot to be done. Please open your heart and raise your voice by becoming a link in the
chain to change. Get out your boots to do some grassroots! Check out CONNPIRG at www.connpirg.org.

Is Knowledge of our Past Experiences Stored in Our Cells? By Elizabeth Wyatt, RRT, RPSGT, CPRYT
T
he answer is a resounding yes! From the time you experienced noxious stimuli as an infant, to the time you fell off your bike, to when you underwent a surgical procedure; all of these experiences are logged in the cells of our bodies. This concept may be difficult to imagine. Is it possible every minute of our lives is written somewhere in some cell waiting to emerge? Evidence has shown that repression of emotions lead to somatization, or physical symptoms from suppressed emotion. If you received an organ from a sister, a friend or stranger, do you then receive their thoughts, feelings, and memories? Research and evidence direct from organ recipients prove this phenomenon. Gary Schwartz PhD collected data on 95 patients who were recipients of a donor organ. All patients were reported to have acquired some trait of their donor, such as recipients adopting the likes and dislikes of the donor. Recipients of organ and tissue were also noted to have changes in emotional response to personal preferences. Some organ recipients have reported having disturbing memories. As in the case of an 8 yr old girl who received the heart of another young girl who was murdered. After her transplant she began to have disturbing “memories” of the murder. These images were so clear she was able to assist the authorities in apprehending the man who murdered the donor. It has been speculated these “memories” are not truly memories, but the “hospital grapevine” that patients hear while in altered states of sedation, and then adopt these preferences or “memories” subconsciously. In the case of the young girl seeing images of the crime and the perpetrator, it can be argued that body memory was the only path for those memories/images to be present.
Candace Pert, author of Molecules of Emotion says, “Memories are stored not only in the brain, but in a psychosomatic network extending into the body….all the way out along pathways to internal organs and the very surface of our skin.” Gary Schwartz PhD and Linda Russek PhD, authors of “The Living Universe”, believe, “all systems store energy dynamically…and this information continues as a living evolving system after the physical structure has deconstructed.” These thoughts suggest the presence of independent memory in a group of cells. Major organs such as the kidney, heart, liver, and muscle tissue, contain vast numbers of neurons. Neural pathways are established in repetition. Would this suggest a donor organ retains its own unique habits or “memories”? The heart has been referred to as the ”little brain” as it has a full intact nervous system all its own. The heart and brain communicate until the heart is removed and donated. This communication may reestablish in the recipient’s body, but often does not. How does the donor heart communicate to the recipient’s brain? Nerve cells from the donor send impulses through various alternate pathways. These new signals compete with the recipient’s memories then begin to influence the emotions of the recipient. In my practice as a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy Practitioner, I have worked extensively with a heart transplant recipient. Following her surgery it was clear to her things had changed on more than a physical level. She developed strong anxiety when operating a car. Driving even short distances, became extremely difficult. In the mind body work of Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy she was able to begin to view her body as a source of information and work with the fear,

to heal the disconnection she felt with her transplanted organ, and to grieve the loss of her own heart. During sessions clients often report having distinct memories of long past surgery or injury, and the emotions that accompanied the event. Imagine speaking to your own body’s memories, I assure you they are. For those of us who have not received an organ, but have had an experience or two we’d rather forget, does our body store them? Do these memories return to cause physical problems or disease? There is a preponderance of evidence this is in fact the case. Many mind body techniques address this directly. We are not able to live in just our head. To do so is to become disconnected on a fundamental level. The world in which we live nudges us toward our bodies in some ways via focus on exercise and fitness and toward our head in another way where we could remain blithely ignoring our body cues. Bringing both together and beginning to honor what a source of wisdom our bodies are is incredibly valuable. Imagine having access to all the experiences you have ever had. That is what it means to be connected to your body’s wisdom. Elizabeth Wyatt, RRT, RPSGT, CPRYT Practitioner worked as a Respiratory Therapist in Emergency and Critical Care. She now works in the Sleep Disorders Center at Middlesex Hospital, and has a private practice in Glastonbury, where she offers Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy sessions by appointment. 860377-0542 atman.pryt@gmail.com http:// elizabethwyatt-pryt.blogspot.com. Shame on Sugar
The Role of Excess Sugar in Chronic Disease By Vicki Kobliner, MS, RD, CD-N
I
n addition to the obvious relationship between sugar and diabetes, excess dietary sugar has been implicated in a host of chronic diseases from heart disease to cancer to aching joints. Even our skin and the progression of aging can be affected by our intake of the sweet stuff, since all our organs are impacted by the increased inflammation that it causes. In every case, chronic inflammation is at the root of the problem, and there is strong scientific evidence that sugar promotes this inflammation at the cellular level. The sugar we eat, whether white, brown, raw, high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, from corn or cane or beets etc., is converted to glucose in the body. We use the glucose for energy to fuel our daily activities, including the less obvious ones such as thinking, breathing and digesting. The increased glucose that enters our blood after a meal causes our body to produce insulin - a hormone that pulls extra glucose out of the bloodstream and stores it for use later, when our energy becomes depleted. When insulin is not effective at its job, blood sugar can rise too high, as in the case of diabetes, and in extreme cases even cause death. However, even milder dysregulation in sugar/insulin balance can have far reaching consequences. Consider the following: • Women with the highest blood sugar levels in one study had the highest incidence of cancer as well. In women under 49 years of age, high blood sugar was correlated with breast cancer incidence. • PET scans, which are used to identify the site and progression of tumors, function by the attachment of a radioactive isotope to a glucose molecule because the sugar moves directly to the cancer site. Cancer
30
Natural Nutmeg July 2012
cells are known to thrive and proliferate on glucose. • High blood sugar has been increasingly correlated with inflammation. • Ingestion of sugar reduces white blood cells (our infection fighters) and depresses the immune system. When the immune system is depressed, we become more susceptible to disease, both acute and chronic. • Excess sugar raises triglyceride (TG) levels. TG cause increased inflammation and are directly linked to heart disease. The “good” cholesterol, HDL, also drops with rising sugar intake. • Arthritis pain can resolve or improve when sweets are removed from the diet. • Dietary sugar can produce harmful molecules called advanced glycation end products (AGEs) which damage the collagen and elastin in our skin, resulting in poor elasticity and wrinkles. • As the amount of sugar each person eats has grown from 10 pounds a year two centuries ago to over 140 pounds a year today, these chronic diseases have skyrocketed in our society.
The American Heart Association has finally acknowledged that sugar has a role in heart disease and recommends that women consume no more than six teaspoons of added sugar a day, and men no more than nine. Compare this to the average American intake of 22 teaspoons a day! One 12 oz. can of soda alone contains 10 teaspoons and a seemingly healthy 8 ounce fruited yogurt contains 6 teaspoons if you only include the added sugar, not the amount found naturally in dairy products. Kids are in even more trouble, eating an average of 34 tsp. a day, primarily from soda, cereal, candy, pastries and other processed sweets. Kicking the sugar habit isn’t easy, especially when overly sweetened processed foods are all around us. Humans and animals have a natural affinity for sweets, and the biochemical effects on body and brain can be considered addictive. In fact, when rats in one study were given the choice, they preferred sugar to cocaine. Artificial sweeteners are not a viable alternative either. Instead of satisfying our sweet tooth, synthetic sweeteners increase our cravings and have been shown to increase calorie
intake and weight gain. They also have their own adverse side effects. However, if we don’t control our sugar intake, chronic diseases will continue to plague us. Sugar can be found in many unlikely processed foods, so to decrease intake read labels and cut out the unnecessary sources like salad dressing, peanut butter, ketchup, and spaghetti sauce. Replace sweetened beverages with plain or lemon infused water or herbal teas. Next, use fruits and honey to sweeten foods, and increase intake of whole grains and vegetables to satisfy your hunger. Try to remove added sugars from the diet for three weeks, but don’t worry about the natural amounts found in healthy foods like carrots or watermelon, which are often maligned as “high sugar” foods. Consider using stevia or xylitol when some sweetness is needed. Vicki Kobliner MS RD, CD-N is a Registered Dietitian and owner of Holcare Nutrition (www.holcarenutrition.com). disease will become the leading cause of death by 2030, contributing to 23.6 million deaths worldwide. The physiological effects of Nitric Oxide (NO) were first recognized in 1876 by physician Thomas Lauder Brunton, who experimented on a patient who had angina. Brunton placed nitrite drops on a cloth and the patient inhaled the vapor. Within one minute, the patient’s pulse improved, his face became flushed and his pain subsided. Brunton concluded that the nitrite compound caused blood vessels to dilate, decreasing chest pain. However, he did not know the specific molecule that caused the effect nor its mechanism of action. Scientists did not identify Nitric Oxide as the messenger molecule or understand its action until the late 20th century. In 1981, pharmacologist Louis J. Ignarro performed experiments that identified NO as a gaseous messenger molecule capable of acting on smooth muscle and other types of cells. As a result of these experiments, Ignarro, Ferid Murad and Robert F. Furchgott received the 1998 Nobel Prize in
Physiology or Medicine. The Swedish Nobel committee commented that “The signal transmission by a gas that is produced by one cell, penetrates through membranes and regulates the function of another cell, represents an entirely new principle for signaling in biological systems.” Before its identification as a molecule responsible for circulatory system improvement, NO was thought to be a waste byproduct of fossil fuel combustion and other chemical reactions. The researchers who discovered NO and first explored its actions were hailed for their profound contribution to the understanding of cardiovascular health. In 1998, the then-president of the American Heart Association, Dr. Martha Hill, remarked that “the discovery of Nitric Oxide and its function is one of the most important in the history of cardiovascular medicine.” Since the Nobel Prize award in 1998, thousands of scientific articles have further explored the association between NO activity and cardiovascular health. In 1992, the American Association for the Advancement of
Science proclaimed NO the “Molecule of the Year” for its role as a biological messenger with beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system. Nitric Oxide is a cell-signaling molecule that is implicated in a host of physiological processes including blood circulation, memory, cognitive functioning, neurotransmission, gastrointestinal processes, gene regulation and delivery of nutrients to cells. Because of the varied effects of NO, dysregulation of its signaling pathway is implicated in several health conditions including memory and cognition disorders, sexual dysfunction, autoimmune disorders and nearly all cardiovascular risk factors. Although NO has a recognized role in a variety of physiological processes, it is perhaps best known as a molecule beneficial to cardiovascular health. Nitric Oxide is a gaseous molecule that plays a critical role in cell signaling, and has serious consequences on the health of the cardiovascular system and many other physiological processes. It’s documented that the human body produces less NO with age; a typical 40-year-old adult creates approximately 50 percent less than a healthy 20-year-old. Scientific evidence suggests that increasing NO production may improve cardiovascular health by facilitating highly specific circulatory system processes, including vasodilation. Although scientists have found NO to be a potent activator of circulatory processes, the general population remains uninformed of the potential benefits of this molecule.
What are the benefits of using a Nitric Oxide Activator?
• Maintenance of healthy blood pressure levels. • Improvement in circulation by signaling arterial smooth muscle to relax, dilating blood vessels. • Prevention of premature cardiovascular aging by improving blood vessel health. • Improvement of sexual functioning by increasing blood flow to penile and vaginal tissues. • Support for neuronal communication, memory processes, and overall cognition. • Improvements in energy, mood, and general feelings of well-being. These benefits of Nitric Oxide have been demonstrated by several scientific studies. In a 30-day clinical trial of the supplement, more than 50 percent of participants reported improvements in anxiety symptoms, indicating that the enhanced NO production has significant effects on mental health and cognition.
What are indicators that Nitric Oxide is working? Several factors indicate that supplementing with NO is restoring healthy Nitric Oxide levels and improving cardiovascular health. Common effects include sharper mental acuity, greater sleep quality, boosted mood, improvements in energy levels and overall feelings of well-being.

Intuition: Is it Real? By Maria Keiser
I
’m sure you have felt it many times in your life, an effortless, unreasoned sense of truth. Like a flash, you get it and don’t know exactly how or why. You only feel in your heart that it’s true. Intuition. Is it real and can it ever fail you? The truth of the matter is that your intuition will almost never fail you. But I need to add that, under certain circumstances and without understanding our emotions and belief systems, it is possible for your intuition to lead you astray. We grasp truth by intuition. It’s bigger than we realize. We rely on our intuition to acquire expertise, creativity, love, and spirituality. We use it to sharpen our thinking and deepen our wisdom. Our intuition allows us to listen to the creative whispers of our unseen mind. In essence, intuition is a process of direct knowledge, knowing without taking the time to reason. Intuition is implicit knowledge. Intuition has been explained by some well meaning people in ways ranging from the unlikely to the completely ridiculous but the phenomenon itself is very real. In fact, we probably would not be able to survive without it. It would be difficult for us to recognize objects, tie our shoes, or find our way to work. Most of our interactions with the world depend on implicit knowledge. For example, we need to implicitly know that, if we step off the edge of a cliff, we will fall down. Recent research regarding intuition has helped us answer a few questions. Are women actually more intuitive than men? Should we make our decisions based on our intuition or gut feeling? Studies show women are much more open to others’ emotional, nonverbal messages than men. Today’s science seems to not want to dismiss the concept of intuition but to fortify it and understand it better. Our intuition is a wonder. But it can sometimes be perilous. The times that our intuition leads us astray most often is when our thinking is obscured, if we don’t have enough information, or when we allow our emotions to take over. There are times when our thinking can become cloudy and we doubt our intuition. Your intuition will almost always lead you without fail if you follow it AND think for yourself. To say that our intuition is infallible wouldn’t be true. But it is almost always right. We just have to keep it in perspective and begin to understand when our emotions or a lack of information can cause our intuition to lead us astray.
Confusion I remember one time when I was working with a small group of girls on a project for a college civics course. We had gotten toward the end when I spotted some errors in our facts and became concerned about them. I brought my concerns to the rest of the girls who were certain I was wrong. They all explained to me that I was mistaken and that the project was fine to hand in as it was. I told myself that I must have been confused and that since they are all in agreement, I should go with the flow. Even though I was trying to convince myself, my gut was telling me otherwise. Wouldn’t you know, we received a C because the professor pointed out the same factual errors that had been bothering me all along. This was the first 34

time I realized that the influence of a group can cause us to doubt our intuition. When a group believes one thing and your gut tells you another, you are far more likely to override your intuition and make the wrong move.
Out of Sync When we are feeling particularly emotional about something or someone, we can also find ourselves out of sync with our intuition. At the start of a new relationship or during the anticipation of an event, we will often confuse our intuition with our emotions. This is especially true when we try to anticipate how we’re going to feel after a particular event. Studies have shown that we accommodate illness, disability, breakups, and defeats more readily than we intuitively expect. Our emotions tell us that something is going to be painful or that we’re going to have a hard time “getting over it.” But the truth is that we recover from these types of events far better than we think we will. The anticipation is always the worst. We need to learn to trust ourselves, trust our gut, and trust that, when we allow it, the truth will show up.
The Shoulds How many times, have you been told that you “should” want something but your intuition is telling you something completely different? Throughout my life, a lot of people felt like they knew what I should want out of life. I was going to become a CPA (so I was told) and settle in to a quiet, conventional life. When people we trust or people of authority are telling us what we should want or what we should believe, this can cause a major disconnect with our intuition. There are some people that we believe know more than us or we see as an authority figure. We can have a tendency to believe them at times and start to doubt our own inner truth. Thankfully, I listened to mine. The world is better off not having me as a CPA. When you face those times in business when others are attempting to tell you what to believe or what you should do next, I ask you to do two things; first make sure you have all the information you need to make the right choice. Then, find some quiet time where you can simply

ponder the situation and allow your intuition to lead you in the right direction. In my professional career, I’ve seen that we all have a tendency to become disconnected from our intuition when we attach ourselves to a particular outcome and stake our self worth on it. We can’t relax during these times. We believe that, to keep our self esteem, we need to perform at our best and things need to turn out in a certain way. This puts our mind under a great deal of pressure. Think of it this way. What if the person you love the most told you that, unless you got a very lucrative, prestigious job, they wouldn’t love you any more? Their love would be tied to you getting this job and being able to buy them lots of things. It sounds absurd, right? It’s insane to think that someone you love the most would tie their love to something so arbitrary. Well every time you get attached to an outcome, you’re doing the very same thing to yourself. You’re often saying to yourself, “if this doesn’t turn out right, I won’t love you anymore and I certainly won’t treat you with respect. If you screw this up, I’ll never trust you to do anything again. I guess I’ll have to endure the pain of being stuck with you forever because you’re all I’ve got. But I don’t have to like it.” Do you ever talk to yourself this way? Imagine how this can cloud your intuition and block your real truth from emerging. I encourage you to, again, make sure you have all the information you need, engage in the right activities, and let your intuition guide you from there. So is our intuition ever wrong? Yes and no. A recent study from New York University showed that we evaluate everything as good/ bad/right/wrong within a quarter of a second. So before we engage in a rational thought, we find ourselves loving or hating a piece of art or our new neighbor. People have always made errors based on their intuition. People believed the earth was flat and that the sun circled the earth because their intuition told them so. Your intuition might tell you that Reno is east of Los Angeles – but you’d be wrong. Bright people sometimes believe absurd things. Even the most intelligent people make costly intuitive errors. We can even create false memories. Often when we are “seeking knowledge”, what we are actually doing is trying to find evidence that supports our current belief. We’re not exactly going about things objectively. We really need to work hard at not fooling ourselves. But sadly, we are all quite skilled at fooling ourselves and usually find ourselves to be the easiest person to fool.

Even as our intuition is telling us something, we can’t just stop there. As I’ve mentioned a number of times, we have a responsibility to question ourselves, our decisions, and even our intuition. When we aren’t armed with enough knowledge or information, our intuitive “truth” can be based on incorrect information or an irrational idea (remember the flat earth). Relying on our intuition alone can and will lead us to make arrogant or costly decisions. “I’m right because I just know it” can backfire and cause consequences we’re not prepared for. So when should we listen to our intuition? My short answer is ALWAYS. But don’t make hasty decisions based on intuition. It’s not as if your intuition will suddenly stop speaking to you in regards to a person, event, or situation. You don’t need to “act now” for your intuition to be effective. When your intuition is telling you something, pay attention to it all the time.
In addition to that, question everything. Question your level of knowledge around that person or situation. Question your feelings about it. Question your emotions and see if they are playing too big of a role in your feelings. Don’t give in to your arrogance and your need to support your beliefs. Once you have thoughtfully gone through the situation or event in your mind and feel as if you have examined the situation fairly and with an open mind, then listen to the quiet but persistent voice of your intuition, you’ll find that you’ll make the right choices almost every time.
