S
ummer is here and I have a question for you! When is the last time you let loose and had some serious fun? In the world we live in today, we are pushed harder and harder to manage every second of our time, work longer hours, be disciplined and take care of everyone but ourselves. Well, it’s about time we all remembered how to play and bring some fun back into our busy lives.
It seems we’ve been conditioned to believe that after we graduate high school or college, the fun stops and the serious work begins. And while we do have to spend more time working now, we must not forget that having fun and playing is the lifeblood of what keeps us going. Summer is the perfect time to do this! Can any of you remember the last time you were on a swing, threw a Frisbee, body surfed the waves at the beach? These are truly life’s greatest pleasures for a kid, why not an adult. Some highly successful companies have brought a sense of humor and play into their workplace. Google allows employees to bring their pets and musical instruments to the office. As cited in Daniel Pink’s book, “A Whole New Mind”, the Wall St. Journal reported that more than 50 European companies have brought in “Serious Play” consultants that train executives with Lego building blocks. So, what is the definition of play for you? It could be hanging out with good friends, playing a sport you love, dancing with your children, watching a funny movie or jumping on that swing. Whatever it is, make sure that you are having fun doing it and it makes you laugh. Play is something that we should engage in on a daily basis even if only for a short period of time. On a weekly basis, we should try and find longer periods of time to really let loose and enjoy ourselves. Remember, part of the reason we are here in this lifetime is to have all different kinds of experiences, having fun and playing being one of them. It shouldn’t be an activity restricted to children or a certain period in your life. You should incorporate play into your life for your entire lifetime. Find one thing you love to do that brings you joy and makes you laugh and do it today or this weekend. Then try and incorporate more and more aspects of play into your daily and weekly schedule. You will find that these times of rest, rejuvenation and fun will allow you to return to your job or business with renewed excitement and mojo momentum to keep reaching for those ultimate goals and dreams.

Nutmeg “Nuggets” What to Know About Chemical and Potential Hair Loss
W
hether you’re convinced blondes have more fun, want to switch up your style or just love the way your hair looks relaxed, permed, bone-straight or full of curls, there are a number of reasons people experience hair loss with hair dyes and chemicals. If you’re bored of the same old hair style, want to switch from brunette locks to sleek and pin-straight, or want to convert from a luscious brunette to a fun bubbly blonde, there are a number of things women need to be aware of in order to avoid experiencing hair loss. Experimenting with your look can be an exciting journey… However , before you get in the salon chair, here are a few things to keep in mind. Know the risks Relaxers, straighteners, perms and hair dyes all have one thing in common: chemicals. Any of these processes can alter the texture or color of your hair and make the strands more fragile and susceptible to damage. This doesn’t mean they can’t work for you. With patience and care, you can get the look you want and still have beautiful and healthy hair. Ensure that you’re in good hands Avoid any hair drama by seeking help from quality hair care professionals. A good hairstylist is aware of the risks, the safety rules and best products to ensure a process safe for you and your hair. Care doesn’t stop in the chair There’s no better time to rethink your usual hair care regimen than after a chemical process. This will include gentle handling, less usage of heat-styling tools, regular trims and conditioning. Opt for protective styles and keep your hair moisturized to prevent any further stress on your hair-strands. Refer to your stylist or licensed professional for the best maintenance, styling tips and products. Nutmeg “Nuggets” What is Holistic Health?
I
n this new season of health care you will hear and read the words “Holistic Health” and may not have a real understanding of its meaning. Holistic Health is based on the premise that a whole is made up of independent parts and we need to treat each part with respect and with the understanding that from the smallest cell in the body, to the emotional and spiritual needs of self all need to be addressed to achieve total wellness. Like a car which is made up of independent parts when working together as a “whole” allow the car to run well giving it a long life. We need to take care of our cars so all the parts can work well together. The same is true with us the “whole” person, we need to take care of ourselves to achieve optimal heath. Holistic Health practices are in reality an approach to life. Holistic health considers the whole person and how he or she interacts with their own environment. Holistic practices emphasize the connection between the mind, body and spirit encouraging people to take responsibility for their own level of well-being; rather than focusing on illness or specific parts of the body the practitioner considers the person as a whole composed of many parts all working together for the greater good. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the key factors influencing an individual’s state of health have not changed significantly over the past 20 years. It has been reported by the American Holistic Health Association that the quality of medical care is only 10%, heredity accounts for 18% and the environment is 19%. Everyday life style choices contribute to 53% of our overall health. So, it is the decisions we make concerning our habits and lifestyle choices that play the largest factor in determining our state of wellness. Our cells are constantly being replaced; new cells are built from what is available. On the non-physical level, a person’s mental and spiritual attitudes are formed from what we see and hear. New Beginnings works with the “whole” respecting the beliefs of its guests and encourages and guides you on your journey to optimal health mind, body and spirit. Annie Chamberland is the founder and owner of New Beginnings Massage and Holistic Care in Granby, Connecticut. She and her holistic wellness team offer far more than just massage. They are true holistic healers who care for their clients’ minds, bodies, hearts, and spirits. Their main modalities include massage, reflexology, Reiki, meditation, yoga, counseling and personal training. See ad on page 31.

THE BUZZ Financial Award Program for Naturopathic Doctors
Integrative Wellness & Physical Therapy
T
raditional physical therapy can often overuse your muscle, causing strains and possibly even more pain on these body parts. In order to truly heal your body, patients need a gentle approach that works with the underlying cause of pain. At Integrative Wellness & Physical Therapy, the clinical staff is trained to use Holistic Physical Therapy, Integrative Manual Therapy and nutritional wellness to help patients discover answers to their chronic pain and symptoms. Holistic Physical Therapy is a hands-on technique that, unlike traditional physical therapy, does not overuse or strain the muscles. Instead, it focuses on the underlying cause of the pain or soreness. Integrative Manual Therapy, known as IMT, is another special technique used by the clinical team that is gentle and non-invasive. Looking closely at where the pain originated, IMT uses gentle hands-on techniques to support healing in the patient and create a program that is specific to each individual. Back, leg and foot pain are some of the most common complaints from patients. At Integrative Wellness & Physical Therapy, orthotics are used to help patients with this problem. These shoe inserts not only provide comfort, but also overall support the entire body. At Integrative Wellness & Physical Therapy, you will receive one-on-one attention from each therapist, providing you with answers to any questions you may have. They will also provide you with information on how to reduce and eliminate your chronic pain through healing eating and healthy living. Integrative Wellness & Physical Therapy is located in Bloomfield, Connecticut. To find out more information, contact (860)519-1916 or visit the website at IntegrativeWellnessAndPT.com. Care for Your Hair and the Environment at Acure Eco Salon
W
est Hartford, CT.; June 4, 2015 – Acure Eco Salon has introduced a line of hair care products and services which aim to reduce consumers’ carbon footprints.
Many people are plagued with hair and scalp problems. For something so apparent in one’s physical identity, most would do just about anything to slay their hair dilemmas. Unfortunately, it is not widely known that certain ingredients in these appearance-saving products are harmful not only to to the environment but consumers as well. Acure Eco Salon provides quality service with quality products at a reasonable price. The Eco Salon administrates experience and technique as the fundamentals of their services. The salon’s color line, Redkin Chromatics, provides endless color possibilities and is completely free of the pungent gas, ammonia. The shampoos used by Acure are also of high quality, being both sulfate and paraben free. Thus shampoos are free of harsh detergents and preservatives. Why is this so essential? Sulfates actually dry out hair and are linked to hair loss and impaired hair growth, only worsening hair problems. Parabens, on the other hand, are linked to more severe health concerns such as breast cancer and reproductive disorders. Acure Eco Salon offers not only natural products, but an Ecofriendly environment. The salon itself was built using reclaimed, recycled and low-impact materials. Inside, the lighting and electronic equipment are all energy efficient. Acure has even conquered the challenge of being a virtually paperless business. Nothing is put to waste here as it is ensured that all recyclable material is recycled. Naturally, all cleaning products are biodegradable with no harsh fumes or toxic chemicals. Acure gives their customers the best, serving organic coffee, tea, milk and cream. Acure Eco Salon is located at 7 South Main Street, West Hartford. More information can be obtained at http://www.acureecosalon. com. For an appointment call 860-232-2873. See ad on page 9.

Get Out of Your Slump
A
t some point during the long hours of the day, we find ourselves slouching—at a desk with our computers waiting in line using our phones, or even sitting down driving our cars. What we do not see is the powerful effects that every slump we make has on our body. Our spine is responsible for every movement we make, and has a connection with all the organs of the body. Poor posture not only leads to back and neck pains, but also may lead to blockage in the digestive system, an increase in depression, and a rise in stress level. Licensed massage therapist Brendan Ammann came up with a solution for this bad habit. As an athlete, Ammann has experienced many injuries and bodily pains, including back and neck pains. Likewise, as a therapist, he receives multiple clients who complain about the same type of pain. Ammann put his mechanical engineering degree to the test, and created something to help save our spines—the Posture6. The Posture6 is a comfortable, satin harness in the shape of a hexagon. It can be worn under clothing and connects the shoulders and the back to lift the abdominal muscles. You start off by wearing the Posture6 for an hour a day, and your muscles are then pulled into the right place. Good posture will gradually become a habit, allowing you to unconsciously stand tall and move with ease. The benefits of good posture will not only decrease body pains in the future, but will also improve important functions such as breathing, digestion, endurance, movement, and coordination. The Posture6 will provide benefits that extend past physical health, as well as increase mental health aspects such as relaxation, confidence, self-image, and mental clarity. Customers of Posture6 have nothing but gratitude to give. Whether it is helping them improve their golf stroke or assisting them in sitting tall at their work desk for long hours, customers of Posture6 say “My back, neck, and shoulders thank me for it.” The Posture6 can be purchased for $29.95. You can call 203-9397398 or visit Posture6.com for more information on posture, meditation, and how the Posture6 will improve many aspects in your life and help you “get out of your slump.”See ad on page 13.
Realize Your Dreams at The Graduate Institute
W
hen it comes to education, most of the time it feels like we are being controlled, not really having a say in who we are or who we want to become. With everyone living such busy lives, it is time to break free from the strict, standardized education system. The Graduate Institute is a not-for-profit graduate institution designed to assist students with their life goals by providing them with an affordable education. Unlike the traditional, limited education models, the Graduate Institute provides hands-on experimental learning that is flexible and directed towards students’ personal goals. The Graduate Institute began in 1999 by Dr. A. Harris Stone. In search of a more self-directed approach to education, Stone and a group of educators created the Graduate Institute. It provides graduate programs based around emerging academic fields and professional development. Both the Connecticut Board of Governors of Higher Education and the Connecticut Department of Higher Education have granted the Institute the right to operate. Today, the Graduate Institute offers meaningful programs and a flexible schedule for graduate students. With community-based discussions, hands-on internships, and a dedicated staff, the Graduate Institute assists students with receiving one of their many master’s degrees in a desired field of study or an International Coaching Federation Certificate. The Certificate Program is also offered, which is a twelve-credit program that helps students strengthen their education and form knowledge about professional practice. These programs include Ecotherapy and Cultural Sustainability, Integrating Health Coaching and Patient Navigation, Integrative Health and Healing, Applied Storytelling, Social Harmony, and Transformative Mental Health. All of the programs are taught and supervised by hardworking administration that take the time to understand your personal goals and values. The Graduate Institute is an accepting program that takes time to look at each student’s application. They also offer admissions for eligible veterans. For more information about the program, admissions, and academics, visit www.learn.edu and learn about the institution that students say has helped them realize their dreams and potential on their own time. Why Go Raw?
T
hey say that food is the fuel for our bodies and without this fuel our bodies would shut down. The misunderstanding that comes with this statement is that feeding our body with the wrong fuel can also assist in the shutdown. The proper fuel needs to be full of energy, which comes from enzymes and nutrients. When we cook food, we lose 100% percent of these enzymes and 30% of these nutrients. There is no question why people are choosing to join the Raw Food Institute. Raw food is full of the enzymes that our body needs to complete all its daily actions. Enzymes give you energy to do what you want to do, while providing your body with energy to carry out important functions, such as digestion and cell duplication. In addition to this, raw food helps your body reach an alkalized state, or in other words, helps your body heal and detoxify. With the combined benefits of enzymes and detoxification, raw food will lead to the results of weight loss, a better well-being, and a vibrant, energetic life style. The Raw Food Institute provides numerous programs to help you start the transformation of your diet, including an award-winning immersion retreat. During this week, participants will receive classes about raw food and detox from the founder herself, Lisa Wilson. As a certified health, nutrition and wellness counselor, Lisa will coach you on a proper diet, recipes to try, and advanced healing in preventative tools. Participants of this retreat will also attend many powerful lectures given by raw food educators and participate in hands-on activities, providing them with tools to bring home after the trip. These same classes can be offered online in the Raw Food Institute’s Distance Learning Program. For participants who fall in love with the Raw Good Immersion Trip, the Raw Food Educator course is offered. With its twelve week program the educator course takes raw food one-step further. When the course is completed, participants receive a certification allowing them to teach their knowledge with others through coaching, teaching classes, and writing books. For more information on the Raw Food Institute, visit their website at therawfoodinstitute.com where you can find recipes, more information about the programs offered, and advice from participants of the institute, and why you too should join them in going raw. What is Love? By Denise Richardson What is love? Love is not an emotion it is the state of your being. -His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
W
e are made up of a substance called love. It is at the core of our very essence. For some of us, stress and strain have covered up that core. We do not experience the truth of our nature, which is love. If you want more love in your life it begins with a connection within yourself. It surprisingly has little to do with outer relationships. When that inner connection is made, those outer connections or relationships become the icing on the cake. Chasing after love and happiness becomes a frustrating activity that can lead to a life of ever-changing wants and desires chasing after an intangible element that can never be found. In the construction of any successful building, it starts with a strong foundation. To begin your own inner building, your foundation starts with loving yourself, so how do we do that? Meditation is a powerful connector; bringing the individual to the deepest part of his/her nature, your own self. When the mind settles down, it lets go of all tension and stress and centers itself in the present moment. When we cultivate this connection we feel and experience a connection with everything around us. Meditating on a regular basis integrates our mind/body connec-

tion and we are no longer victims to any strong negative emotions. Emotions such as anger, anxiety and disappointments come and go as fleeting emotions, but they no longer grip us and affect our state of mind. We are stronger and feel up to the challenges that life brings us. Love is experienced within; and then is more easily expressed through our own state of mind. The inner useless and sometimes constant chatter decreases and we experience a more peaceful, calm and happier state. Making that inner connection brings stability from the depth of our unchanging source, our finest level of existence. It is so refined and so intimate that it affects everything and everyone that we come in contact with. Our lives can only benefit because of this connection. Meditation rejuvenates our mind, strengthens our focus, our intuition, our connection with people. Meditation brings about a relationship of love and respect for who we are, which translates into more meaningful and satisfying relationships in our own personal lives. Denise Richardson is senior faculty with International Association for Human Values and Art of Living Foundation. For over 20 years Denise has personally taught thousands of people from all walks of life how to use powerful breathing and meditation techniques to conquer stress and increase their capacity to bring positive energy into their daily interactions. Denise resides in Connecticut with her husband and two grown children.

Digital Photo Overload … What’s a Person to Do?
By Regina Sanchez
W
ho remembers the days of using rolls of film that we placed inside our cameras, shot 24 or 36 pictures, removed the film, had it developed (probably duplicates) and placed them in a pocket photo album? Those days are long gone. Buying a roll of film? I don’t think so.Now with the technology of digital photos, we have a tendency to shoot away not even realizing that we just shot hundreds of photos at an event or gathering. When we used rolls of film, the average family shot about 12 rolls of film a year. That’s an average of one roll per month. Today, the average family shoots about 7,000 digital pictures a year. Multiply that by 18 years of your children’s lives. That comes out to about 126,000 photos. Now that’s a big number. Take a look at these statistics from APPO (Association of Personal Photo Organizers): • 75% of US households own a digital camera • 86% of all digital images never leave the camera • 30.4 billion images are saved a year and very few are printed • 750 million photos were uploaded to Facebook on New Year’s Day 2011 • Photos are vulnerable to hard drive crashes and technical obsolescence • Time is destroying home movies and videotapes such as VHS, 8MM, 35 mm, etc. • Every 2 minutes today, we snap as many photos as the whole of humanity took in the 1800’s. In fact, 10% of all the photos we have were taken in the past 12 months We are experiencing digital overload. Because we do not have to worry about purchasing film and paying to have it developed, we click our snapshot buttons endlessly. I remember just getting my digital camera and attending my son’s baseball games. They were always so much fun with much activity. In his senior year of high school, his team played at Cooperstown. Needless to say, I got a little carried away and shot over 600 pictures for this one baseball game. By the time the baseball season was over, I had a couple thousand pictures to sort through so I could create his special memory. 14
Natural Nutmeg - July/August 2015
So, how can we manage our digital overload? Here are some tips you can apply to bring order to your digital photos. 1. To start, be sure all your photos are off your phones, tablets and old computers and stored in one designated place. 2. Once you have all your photos in one place on one computer, be sure to back it up. We, as Photo Organizers, recommend two back up places. One could be in the cloud and the other on an External Hard Drive (EHD). Or if you don’t like the cloud, then store on two different EHDs. If you purchase two EHDs at the same time and they are from the same manufacturer and one becomes defective, then you will probably have a problem with both. 3. Next, apply the ABCs of Photo Organizing to your photos. This is a method that will help you sort and purge your photos. A is for Album. These are the photos that you want to put in an Album. They are the ones that tell a story. B is for those photos that you want to keep, just not in an album. You would store them in an “archival safe” photo box. C is for can … as in trash can. They are photos that are blurry, fuzzy or undefined. They can be pictures of scenery you don’t even know where it is or places you didn’t even go to. Many times we inherit our parent’s photos, and their collection includes vacations that are meaningless to us. Toss those. 4. Rename your photos. Having them identified by the assigned photo number is not a helpful way to search for them when needed. Renaming them will make your search easier. You could put the year first, event second and name of person last. As an example: 2012GraduationLeslie. This way when you want to search for Leslie’s Graduation pictures you can put Leslie and Graduation in the search bar and up they will come. 5. Create folders once you have identified the photos and move them into their appropriate folder. Name the folders accordingly. If you want a folder that has all of Leslie’s pictures in them, then the name of the folder would be LeslieJones for example. But then inside that main folder you will have sub folders. One would be Graduation.
6. Storing your photos on Facebook is not the way to go. First, Facebook downgrades your photo. So if you want to retrieve them back, they will be of lesser quality. Secondly, those photos that are on Facebook are the rights of others to use or share. So putting a few photos on your page is ok but I would highly recommend not your whole collection. 7. Know this: inaction will lead to loss. You cannot ignore your digital photos, and think nothing will ever happen. Your risks are high that you will lose them. There is no guaranteed way to 100% preserve your digitals photos, however these are ways to lessen the risk. 8. Once you shoot photos at an event, quickly go through your camera and delete those that aren’t worth saving. 9. The next step is to upload those photos to your computer, create a folder and identify each photo. 10. Remember: shoot, cherish and share your photos, and make those precious memories. Still feeling overwhelmed with your digital photos even after following these organizational tips? Let’s connect. I’m extending a 10% discount off of a full, complete assessment. Organic, Effective Skincare at the Spa and at Home
By Mary Blair, Esthetician
P
erhaps you have hard-to-deal with issues such as acne, wrinkles, Rosacea, or hormonal blemishes. Maybe you have aging skin, combination skin, or super-sensitive skin. Maybe you just want a brighter complexion. Or perhaps you are mindful of the ingredients, knowing that 70% of what you put on your body is absorbed into your body. “Some of our clients choose OSEA skincare products because they’ve had a bad reaction to commercial skincare products,” says Melissa Martin Wallace, esthetician and owner of Anew You Skincare & Wellness Center in Avon. “Others are concerned about the short- and long-term effects of chemicals. Some are committed to organic living for their own sakes, their kid’s sakes, and the planet’s sake. And frankly, many just love the feel, the effectiveness, and the fresh, clean scent of the products.” Whatever your reason, OSEA is a beautiful choice. Their products are certified organic, they’re vegan, gluten-free and crueltyfree, the containers are biodegradable, the daily skincare system is simple, the results are immediate, and all products are fully guaranteed by the company. Melissa discovered OSEA at a spa in Bora Bora, while on her honeymoon. She liked it so much she decided to carry it along with her SkinCeuticals line – the only two lines she believes in enough to offer. Adding OSEA made Anew You one of the only spas in the area that offers certified organic products. Immediate and Lasting Improvements OSEA’s effects are immediate; within minutes, the skin softens and tones, and luster is restored. Daily use refreshes, restores and revives skin. And it’s a simple system. Regardless of skin type, gender, race, and age, mixing and matching a few products is all you need to see results. “Our clients get addicted to the results from the OSEA seaweed facial,” says Mary Blair, esthetician. “This treatment is so nourishing! It feeds the skin and makes it softer and smoother immediately, even on sluggish, clogged, resistive, and prematurely aging skin. The OSEA facial rehydrates and plumps skin – so important for summer skincare. It’s great for fine lines and wrinkles and lasting nourishment. It really helps with that summer glow!”

Natural Nutmeg - July/August 2015
OSEA’s philosophy is built into their name: OSEA stands for Ocean, Sun, Earth, and Atmosphere. And some of the most important components of their products are seaweeds, which are ecoresponsibly, hand-harvested from some of the most pristine waters in the world, off the coast of Patagonia. Purity, Quality, and Effectiveness OSEA uses specific kinds of seaweed, which slow the aging process and protect skin from harsh environmental factors. Seaweed is one of the richest sources of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, trace elements, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese and zinc. Seaweed also is rich in fatty acids that strengthen and maintain the quality of healthy cell membranes. All the seaweed OSEA uses is USDA-certified organic, and it’s kosher, as well. Other good-for-you ingredients include aloe vera leaf juice, shea butter, and essential oils, to name a few. Anew You Skincare clients who’ve compared OSEA ingredients to the ingredients in their department store skincare products have been known to switch on the spot! What’s Not in OSEA Products OSEA never uses synthetic fragrances, GMOs, petrochemicals, parabens, sulfates, animal by-products, phthalates, synthetic color, petroleum, nanomaterials, or PEG compounds. The website states “…we have formulated each and every one of our products without these harmful and all too common skincare ingredients. We believe that safe cosmetics are your right and our earth’s rightful due. We don’t do anything that pollutes or harms our planet because that is where we find our most effective ingredients. We are committed to providing customers with extensively researched products designed for their purity, quality, and effectiveness. We develop our products with only the purest ingredients, proven and technically advanced formulations to restore skin to its highest level of health and appearance.” In 2002, OSEA was the first company to sign The Compact for Global Production of Safe Health and Beauty Products which launched the Skin Deep Report. Since then, more than 1100 companies have joined OSEA in pledging to phase out the use of toxic chemicals in all beauty products.
“I want to leave this planet a cleaner place than when I arrived. (Like being a good house guest) I also want women to be able to use the safest cosmetics possible. Remember 70% of what you put on your body can be absorbed into your bloodstream. I want to raise the consciousness of women so they use safe cosmetics, it’s not just about beauty - it’s about their health.” - OSEA Founder Jenefer Palmer

Self-Love, A Touchstone to Rock a Life You Love
By Juliette Taylor don’t care who you talk to or who you ask, if it’s a ‘she’, there’s a chasm between who she sees herself as and who she wants to see herself as. We, women (yes, I’m including myself in this description, because I was once like that) are riddled with self-doubt, self-imposed limitations, and dare I say even self-hatred. Having raised both girls and a boy, I can say that I noticed it very clearly and distinctly by middle school. I can go on and on about mass media, the role of women in society, the difference in reactions to an outspoken and aggressive boy and the same behavior in a girl. But I won’t, you can take a feminist course for that. What I want to focus in on is shifting patterns of self-loathing, self-limitations, and self-scrutiny into one of self-love, and as Gala an online blogger calls it, radical self-love.
I
She puts it so succinctly with her Kiwi accented words when she describes how she came about developing her notion of radical self-love. “…More to the point, there was a huge disconnect between how women saw themselves and how they wanted to see themselves. I had recently gone through a massive personal transformation, and was excited to share what I knew. I called it radical self love, and the rest is history!” You can shift gears from whatever negative thought you use to one of unconditional revolutionary self-love. I did it! And so can you. Let me tell you the secret…it’s change and action. Change and action require you to do only two things, and that is, firstly, to think of yourself as a Goddess- gorgeous, powerful, and magical. If it’s easier, you can even visualize yourself as a fabulous luxurious pair of Louboutins, like I do. Do it. Do it now. Seriously. Stop reading for a minute and do it. And then come back to me because we have a lot more dishing to do here. I want you to love yourself like something precious, rare, and absolutely exquisite. Can you do that? Then take the very next step, swiftly, so that your inner gremlin doesn’t catch up to you just yet. What’s step two? Take immediate action on the change you want to see in yourself. Take action like a rebel, or a warrior, or I’ll add a vixen because these badass dames know how to make it happen for themselves. It’s like Thelma and Louise, they have the gall to go balls to the wall. Action. This is the 18
Natural Nutmeg - July/August 2015
difference between the sexes. Women are not taught to take action, while men are. We don’t demand a raise, we ask, we don’t stand in front of the room and speak out in meetings, we wait and offer suggestions. Stop. Rewind the messaging. And restart taking action. What is it you want to do? What is it your body is trying to tell you when you don’t feel well? Ask your body what it wants to tell you in order to start healing. Hint: it’s usually something going on in your outer life. You may not want to hear it because it may be radical and it will require change. What radical change needs to happen in your inner environment to then be illustrated in your outer environment? You know. Can you speak it? Will you act on it? I just love how Gala declares a manifesto for you to follow. She declares: “You are destined for more than a life of corporate cubicle hell. You are more than just a worker bee, a mother, a wife or a girlfriend. You can be and do whatever you want. There are a million possible avenues for you to saunter down, and the only way to discover that for yourself is to put on your best shoes and just start walking.” So when you’re ready to give in…release: • All the pain you’ve felt since you were told not to ask for what you want when you asked for the Barbie your mom refused to buy for you • All the ideas in your head that say you’re not good enough yet and keep you from pushing for the next level in everything you do • All the lack of inspiration you feel toward what you have now, in your business and in your relationships, making life feel hollow, instead of passion-filled Being stuck where you are, not enjoying the small things (or the big ones) in this life, wishing you had revisited the parts of the world you’ve been missing is painful. And it keeps you where you are, not realizing your greatness (which, by the way, is something you’ve already achieved; you just don’t FEEL it yet). You’re standing in the same room as the big boys, but you’re waiting for permission to play with them. But, that’s not what’s in you.
What’s in you is the need for big moves and the need to take risks no one else will take, so you can command more and know you deserve it. It’s about the ability to attract higher-end clients and better projects and going out and getting what you want, without any apologies. It’s about holding your own. What’s in you is the need to love yourself, as much as the world does. To see in yourself, what the world sees. And when you’re ready to: Live the balance you need to drill forward toward your success. Look at every moment as a blessing and with utter joy. Release yourself from the feeling that you’re not good enough. Because 20 years from now, you want to look back and see what you’ve accomplished with pride, not regret. I’m here to help you find your path to happiness. Your path to cups-of-coffee-on-the-veranda-in-the-silence-of-the-morning kind of happiness. Your path to unrelenting joy…to contentment that’s contagious and spreads from the ends of your locks to the core of your soul. My LifesPath™ process is the single most comprehensive path to health, happiness, and love, and that’s why I have created it for you. I’ve guided hundreds of clients to break through their blocks, to disprove the beliefs about themselves that are holding them back, and to find the strength to live lives they want to wake up to each morning. And at the end of the day, who you are when you’re alone is who you are at your core. Learn to live it and love it with everything in you and the life you want to live opens up, effortlessly. Submitted by Juliette Taylor, Shamanista putting Louboutins on Your Soul. When you’d rather hide beneath your Frette duvet just a week longer, I’m the soul-sister who’s going to help you get back up and sashay down life’s runway again. Pull your Louboutins out again and dance the dance of success with me. Natural Remedies for Bumps and Bruises and Knowing When to Call Your Doctor By Robin Russell, ND
I
t’s finally summertime and the kids are outside biking, hiking, swimming, at the playground, and playing sports. With these activities can sometimes bring the unpleasant bumps, bruises, cuts, scrapes, and head injuries. Some of these injuries can seem pretty scary as a parent. Knowing how to appropriately treat them and when to call the doctor can provide you with much needed comfort. Bumps/Goose Eggs (Hematomas) and Bruises (Contusions) 1. What is a goose egg? A collection of blood and tissue fluids that pools under the skin that leaks out of damaged blood vessels following an injury. 2. What are bruises? A collection of blood under the skin that leaks out of damaged blood vessels following an injury. 3. How do I treat them? a. Cold/Ice compresses x 20 minutes (if tolerated) i. Kid friendly cloth covered ice gel pack ii. Frozen peas iii. Frozen rice filled cloth pack iv. Ice cubes in plastic bag (thin cloth between ice and skin) b. More than 48 hours: Warm washcloth x 10 minutes 3x/day to help resorb the blood c. Over the counter (OTC) pain medications: Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen d. Homeopathic Arnica topically and orally e. Calendula cream/ointment topically f. Vitamin C orally g. Bioflavonoids i. Foods: Strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, cherries, grapes, squash, carrots, yams, beets, red bell peppers, spinach, broccoli, citrus fruits ii. Supplement h. Witch hazel topically i. Comfrey ointment, cream or gel topically Cuts and Scrapes 1. How do I treat them? a. Apply direct pressure to wound for 10 minutes with a sterile gauze or cloth to stop any bleeding. b. Wash the wound with soap and water for 5 minutes. If there is any dirt or debris in the wound, scrub gently to remove. Do NOT wash wound out if severe cut that needs stitches, bring to Emergency Department for treatment immediately. c. If cut is on arms or legs, elevate extremity to reduce bleeding. d. Hydrogen peroxide: to irrigate and clean the wound e. OTC topical antibiotic ointment 2x/day 20
Natural Nutmeg - July/August 2015
f. Keep wound covered with dressing and change daily until it begins to heal. This protects wound from getting infection. 2. When to Call Your Doctor a. Tetanus vaccine is not up to date OR unvaccinated child b. Not able to control bleeding after 10 minutes of direct pressure c. Cut is very deep (can see muscle, bone, or tendons) d. Dirt unable to be removed from wound (may need irrigation in doctor’s office) e. Skin is split open or gaping (may need stitches) f. Signs of infection (redness, red streaks, fever, pus/discharge, very painful) g. Doesn’t heal within 10 days Head Injuries 1. Types a. Scalp Trauma: Cuts, scrapes, bruises, hematomas. This area of the body has a very rich blood supply. Thus, injuries to this area will cause increased bleeding. b. Skull trauma: bruises and fractures. c. Concussion d. Brain trauma 2. Call 911 immediately If: a. Loss of consciousness for more than 1 minute b. Appears confused, drowsy c. Crossed eyes, unequal pupils d. Clear fluids draining from nose, mouth, or ears e. Seizure f. Unable to move limbs g. Off balance while sitting, crawling, or walking h. Severe headache i. Slurred speech j. Not moving neck k. Uncontrolled bleeding 3. Call Doctor immediately If: a. Loss of consciousness for more than 1 minute b. Blurred vision c. Skin is open or gaping d. Large swelling greater than 2 inches (age less than 12 mos: greater than 1 inch) e. Age less than3 mos. f. Age less than 24 mos. With fussiness or continued crying g. Vomiting more than 3 times 4. At Home Treatment: a. Observation x 48 hours i. Monitor for all of the aforementioned symptoms
ii. Encourage child to lie down and rest until symptoms have cleared (mild headache, mild dizziness, and nausea are common). iii. Allow child to sleep if they want to but be nearby to monitor every couple of hours. iv. Awaken child after 2 hours of sleep to check their ability to walk and talk. b. Offer clear fluids in the 2 hours following injury in case of vomiting. c. Avoid pain medications during the 1st couple of hours after injury to monitor for headache severity. d. Night-time i. Awaken child every 4 hours x 2 nights and check ability to walk and talk. Sleep in same room. e. Expected Course i. Most head injuries only cause scalp injury. ii. Swelling can take a week to resolve. iii. Local headache at site of injury usually resolves in 2-3 days. Injury prevention should be implemented first and foremost. Tetanus vaccination should be up to date. Make sure a first aid kit is easily accessible during emergency situations. Always make sure your child is wearing the appropriate and correctly fitted protective gear for their sports. Helmets, pads, and reflective clothing should be worn while biking. Adult supervision is an absolute must when around bathtubs, swimming pools, and any body of water. By implementing these preventative measures, knowing how to treat injuries if they happen, and knowing when to call your doctor, you will be able to feel some comfort while your little ones are enjoying the outdoors this summer. Battling the Child Obesity Epidemic…Solved! By Ayelet Connell-Giammatteo, PhD, PT, IMT,C
I
have two children. They are young and healthy. I am grateful every day for their health, but what about the baggage that they carry with them…their genetics? How much does genetics affect us? Well, science shows that genetics is definitely a factor. But is it a verdict? The presence of Diabetes in our family history is indisputable. My mother had it. My aunt has it. My mother-in-law has it. Does that automatically create a certainty that my children will have it? This leads us to the topic of Epigenetics, which is a field of science that studies the ability of genes to turn themselves on and off in response to various biological mechanisms. How does this relate to our discussion on children and diabetes? Ultimately, if diabetes is genetic, then that means that our genes turn on the disease process. In the world of Epigenetics, scientists have shown that in fact, many factors can affect this process. For example, if we adopt a healthy diet, we can influence our genetics, particularly our genes that turn on a disease such as diabetes. It seems that our children that are raised in families with a history of diabetes have a greater propensity towards getting this disease in life. But what if they ate a healthy diet? How would this affect their future health? The obesity epidemic affecting our children today, especially in the United States, is all around us. It is hard to miss. In fact, there are so many chronic illnesses today that seem to be affecting the majority of children in our country, including ADHD, asthma, allergies and additionally autism is on the rise. Our children are becoming sicker. What can we do to make a difference—a big difference? Let’s take a moment to discuss inflammation. Inflammation is a common characteristic of all chronic disease. The standard American diet is ‘inflammatory’ which means that when we eat this type of diet, it contributes to more inflammation in our body. Why is this important? Well, if we were to eat a diet that was less inflammatory, we could essentially affect our genetics. We could reduce our chances of developing chronic diseases. We could improve our children’s health. It is literally as simple as that!

Of course, changing our diet is not easy, but changing our children’s diet is even more challenging. But what if it meant improving our longevity? Or reducing the chance of disease and illness? There’s no question that it’s worth it. The consideration that it’s under our control, and that we don’t have to go see someone to initiate this process of change is pretty cool! So how do we start? How can we initiate a healthy diet that is limited in inflammatory foods? Follow these steps: 1. Eliminate refined sugar and artificial sweeteners: Keep in mind that there are plenty of healthy alternatives to sugar, even tasty ones. Some substitutions that can be used in moderation are stevia, raw honey, pure maple syrup, coconut and palm sugar. 2. Reduce grain and eliminate gluten: Gluten is a particularly inflammatory protein found in wheat, rye, barley and often oats. It is very easy to be ‘gluten-free’ today because of all the substitutes. But keep in mind that grain, in general, can be inflammatory and also can contribute to challenges with sugar metabolism. It is ideal to change our staple meals from being grain-based (pasta and bread and rice) to eating more vegetables and natural protein. Consider pasta and bread as a side dish, but never the main course. 3. Eat your vegetables and fruit: Ideally, we should have one or two servings of vegetables at every meal. Fruit also has many important nutrients, but when obesity is an issue, we need to limit fruit to one or two per day. We also need to eat fruits that are considered ‘lower glycemic’, which means that when we eat them, they don’t spike our blood sugar. Some examples of lower glycemic fruits include berries, apples, and pears. 4. Eliminate processed foods and preservatives: Processed foods and preservatives contain many chemicals that when eaten on a regular basis can contribute to inflammation in the body, and also lead to disease and illness. The best alternative is fresh food. 5. Avoid GMO (or genetically modified foods): The verdict is still out on GMO foods in our country. In Europe, they have banned all GMO foods because of their negative effects on our health. It is best to completely avoid if possible. The labeling laws are
yet to be fully initiated in our country. Ultimately, the only way to know for sure that something is not GMO is if it’s labeled as ‘organic’. On a side note, Trader Joes, which is a great natural grocer that is more affordable then some of its competitors, is completely free of GMO foods. 6. Avoid peanuts and peanut products: Peanuts can be very inflammatory. It is best to avoid eating peanuts altogether. A great substitute for peanut butter is ‘sunbutter’, which is a nut butter made from sunflower seeds. 7. Natural animal protein: The ideal is organic and grass-fed or free-range meat. When this is not available, natural and hormone/antibiotic-free is the second best. When a cow is fed a grain-based diet, it means that the meat will be more inflammatory, similar to how grain affects our body. When the cow is grass-fed, it means that the meat is healthier. But grass-fed meat is not always available. In this case, especially with obesity, it is better to eat more organic or natural poultry. For many of us, we are protein deficient. Eating three servings of protein daily is ideal. But keep in mind that it is difficult for our body to digest more then 5 ounces of animal protein at a time—gone are the days of 16oz steaks! 8. Avoid processed dairy: For many people, dairy is inflammatory. For others, it is important that the dairy source is free of antibiotics and growth hormones. The dairy should also be a full fat source. When dairy is fat free, it is generally more inflammatory because of the chemical processing involved to create this lesser fat version. The best way to know if dairy is not ideal for you or your child is to eliminate it completely from the diet for 1-3 months and assess how you feel—do you feel any different? Do you have less symptoms? Have you lost a lot of excess weight? These questions will help you determine whether you can eat dairy products. If you find that dairy is not good for you, there are many substitutes today, including coconut milk and nut milks, butter substitutes such as Earth Balance, and even some cheese substitutes. 9. Drink lots of water: Most people, including kids, are dehydrated. This means that we are not drinking enough water. When we are dehydrated, our body does not function as well. When we drink lots of water, our body’s waste systems work better, which means we are able to drain more toxins out. Ideally, with children, substituting water for juice is best. Juice is processed in the body as sugar, which can lead to further obesity issues.
Coconut Pancakes In an effort to reduce grain in my family’s diet, I modified a gluten-free pancake recipe to be grain-free. Consider this coconut pancake recipe to be the ‘basic recipe’ that you can then fold in optional additional ingredients such as blueberries or sautéed apples and cinnamon. Ingredients: • ½ cup coconut flour (sift into bowl through mesh strainer) • ¼ cup tapioca starch • ¼ cup potato starch • ½ tsp baking soda • 1 tsp baking powder • ¼ tsp sea salt • 1 egg • 1 cup water or milk substitute • ½ tsp vanilla extract Directions: 1. Add dry ingredients together and mix lightly 2. Add liquid ingredients in separate bowl and mix well until all ingredients are incorporated 3. Pour liquid mixture into dry mixture 4. Mix well until batter is smooth—if mixture is too dry (coconut may cause batter to clump) then add in more water or milk substitute (a little at a time) 5. If you are choosing to add in additional ingredients, now is the time—gently fold in ½ - 1 cup of filling into batter 6. Heat pan to medium 7. Use oil spray to create non-stick surface (if oil burns then pan is too hot) 8. To check if pan is at correct temperature, sprinkle water drops on and hear sizzle 9. Pour ¼ cup batter onto pan as ‘tester’ pancake to determine if correct heat and batter thickness 10. When bubbles start to form in pancake on pan, then flip pancake and cook for additional minute on other side 11. Enjoy!
Though changing our diet and our family’s diet can seem daunting, it is actually easier then it seems. Ultimately, we need to shift our mindset. Eat only when you’re hungry and try to eat only natural foods with lots of water. Here is an example of a meal plan: Breakfast: scrambled eggs with sautéed spinach OR homemade coconut pancakes (see recipe to the right) with fresh berries Mid-morning snack: apple OR carrot sticks and hummus Lunch: Leftovers from dinner OR large salad with natural protein and nuts and seeds and a light salad dressing (olive oil/lemon juice/sea salt and pepper or homemade honey mustard made from honey/mustard/lemon juice) Mid-afternoon snack: nuts and seeds OR berries and coconut yogurt

Transition and Crisis as an Initiation By Lawrence Ford f you are going through a transition or crisis consider this. As unsettled, chaotic, and perhaps even as hopeless as things are right now there may be another way to look at what is happening.
I
• Maybe there is something deeper to look at beyond a miserable time that you can’t wait to get through? • Maybe what is happening to you right now is not all that bad. • Maybe what is happening is a gift beyond measure. • Maybe the dark place that you’re in is really an initiation. • Maybe this initiation is preparing you for something you have been waiting for your whole life. The majority of our American culture no longer recognize initiations as having much value; consequently most of us don’t have any context for these tough times beyond viewing them as something unproductive, a sign of weakness, or simply a painful nuisance. I know it is hard, if not impossible, to see a crisis as having any value when you are in the middle of it, but that is the way initiations work. You don’t understand what is happening as they rip you apart in a wrathful, relentless, loving way, with only one goal in mind…to break you down so you can be rebuilt to become the person you are meant to be in all your authentic power. If you are in the midst of a crisis and things seem hopeless, see if you can feel some truth in what I am saying. See if you can feel the slightest tickle in your belly letting you know there may be some truth in these words. How do you know if you are in crisis? When I speak of a transition or crisis I am referring to a time in your life that knocks you off your current path and forces you to reevaluate your existence. This could be the death of someone close to you, a medical diagnosis, a birth of a child, marriage, divorce, relationship challenges in general, depression or anxiety, kids heading off to college, retirement, financial challenges, finding yourself in an abusive situation, a near death experience, or just a time when you say, “I just can’t live this way anymore.”
You are here for a reason Your soul has a special song, a special vibration that is like a snowflake; no two are alike. Your job on this earth is to align your ‘being’ with your ‘doing.’ To a shaman, your soul is as real as your mind and body, and because of that it needs to be cared for. When our soul’s vibration is aligned with our physical existence, we are in authentic power. We are most powerful when we are on the path to recognizing the unique gift we have to share with the world. When we continue to do things that are not in alignment with whom we are, we operate out of synch like a car that bumps down the road because a tire is out of balance, or like a person walking around with a pebble in their shoe. Eventually these things eat at us. When a person is in this state of discord, it feels as though they are singing out of tune. The more people who are living this way, the more our world sounds like an entire chorus singing out of tune. When we live out of balance our soul is in a state of constant stress. Our bodies and minds become dis-eased. We get sick and depressed and lose meaning and purpose. The world around us is not immune to this noise and soon the ripple effect begins to disturb everything. The bees can’t find their way back to the hives and the oceans rise and become dark and murky. You are here for a reason and you know it; the problem is that so many of us have forgotten this …but our souls do not forget. In fact, life is one big conspiracy designed to guide us into our soul’s purpose and initiations are the way spirit wakes us up to remember. Initiations are hard Initiations come upon us sometimes when we least expect them and throw our lives into a whirlwind. Initiation can hurt so bad and feel so hopeless you can lose faith in the sun ever rising again. You can be brought to a place where life no longer seems worth living. And that is the point, I guess. I wish it could be different, I really do. But after going through my own initiation and from working with hundreds of courageous souls as they passed though tough times, I have come to understand that it is just how it works.
One thing that is in common with all of these life events is that they force you to change the way you perform your daily routine for a while, giving you the opportunity to wake up and remember you’re here for a reason.
When I was in Nepal many years ago I unwittingly entered into the beginning of my own initiation. One afternoon, a short shaman with a tall power looked up at me from my ribs and said:
“There is a purpose to life. Find the light inside you. Feed it, fire it up, and let it shine with abandon throughout the world; it will reflect upon you in ways unimagined” L. Ford
“You people…you wait until you are forty to “do” initiation, and when it comes you call it a mid-life crisis and run. Very funny, very sad.”

Over the next seven years I was broken, opened, hopeless, enlightened, and ultimately retrieved a missing piece of my soul and was initiated into my found heritage as a shaman in the Bon lineage. Life is designed to initiate us into who we are, to help us heal old wounds that have kept us from being in our full power here on earth. But we have lost the value in the tradition of initiations and because of this when they come we don’t even know what they are. An initiation is designed to guide you, test you, and awaken you into living your purpose here on this earth. So how did we get lost? If we are asleep we cannot hear the call. The shamans tell us that we have fallen asleep. Our days drift by moving from A to B, B to A, with an occasional C thrown in for a vacation. We become like robots with our minds, believing in only the things we have witnessed in our experience through our five senses. We live in the past or future, but rarely in the moment. We dig ourselves into deep ruts that we convince ourselves we cannot escape from. These ruts imprison us with life’s obligations, with the dream of our culture, and become imprinted on our brains as well-worn neurological pathways. The shamans tell us this is the process of becoming domesticated. Like a river, energy inside the brain follows the path of least resistance, our thoughts flow with ease in accordance with the dream we have co-created here on this earth. We react to our children’s antics only to catch ourselves sounding like our mother, we eat ice cream for dessert because we were given it as a treat as a child, and we relate to money in the ways that we learned growing up. We have lost sight of the bigger picture. We travel in our canoe down the river of life back and forth until the path has worn the banks so tall that we can no longer see the horizon. The only view is the bank and everything that occurs in our little world. It’s all we know as we paddle each day. Until a crisis or transition comes with enough strength to kick our butts and stir us from our slumber.
that speak to you. Join a course. Make sure that what you find in any of these teachers feels authentic. Many people teach as a way of avoiding their own initiation, or find themselves so excited in the midst of their own initiation that they rush out to teach others before they are ready. Trust your instincts and demand to attract the teacher you deserve. Do not ignore the value of modern medicine; see a doctor, psychiatrist, or therapist. Getting help is not a sign of weakness. The whole point of an initiation is too lose oneself. Dante in the Divine Comedy summed it up beautifully when he started with the words… “In the middle of the road of my life I awoke in a dark wood, where the true way was wholly lost.” Many traditions still send young children into the dark woods to fend for themselves as a way of initiating them into adulthood. One of the fundamental necessities of an initiation is to become lost. If you sent a young boy into the woods for a week to fend for himself, and then you gave him a flashlight and a map, it would kind of defeat the whole purpose. You are supposed to be lost right now. It is the way it works. What can I do now? It is true; the teacher arrives when the student is ready. Intend, attract, take action and get help. Reach out to people who can help guide you through these times. People who have been through their own initiations and can help you see the light when things are dark are always good people to learn from. Find books

Training Your Nervous System: A New Approach to Interval Training By Jessica Pizano
E
veryone knows how important exercise is for health. For those who suffer from fatigue and chronic illnesses (autoimmune disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic Lyme disease, fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue, etc.), however, just the thought of exercise evokes the fear of not being able to get out of bed the next day. Unfortunately, the more that we rest and avoid exercise, the less energy generating capacity is available in the body. The powerhouse of the cell is called the mitochondria. Cells that require lots of energy may have as many as 2000 mitochondria (such as liver cells) and cells that do not require any energy (like the red blood cell) have none. The body does not waste energy creating mitochondria if we choose not to exercise. This will lead to a decreased capacity for energy creation and can cause problems with fatigue. When we do exercise, the body will naturally increase the production of mitochondria, allowing the body to produce increased amounts of energy to meet the body’s demand. This is why exercise is so important for improving energy levels. The question then becomes what type of exercise is best? While there is no one right answer to this question, for those with energy based issues, many have high levels of stress. Stress may be physiologic, as in the case of disease, or it may be more emotionally based. Either way it will begin a cascade of biochemical reactions in the body including the release of adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine. This is important to understand because exercise itself is a stressor that can increase the release of these stress hormones. So while exercise is good, too much exercise is not healthy at all. Overtraining can cause a breakdown of the body that generates elevated stress and inflammation. Left to figure out exercise on their own, most people suffering from fatigue and related illnesses will generally choose a low-tomoderate level intensity aerobic exercise program such as walking. Intensity is determined by the percentage of your maximum heart rate (220-age). Light exercise is considered 40% to 65% of your maximum heart rate, moderate is 65% to 75% of your maximum heart rate, and high intensity is anything above 75% of your maximum heart rate. While all exercise will have a positive effect on immune response, the effects of high intensity exercise are much greater. This also holds true for insulin receptor sensitivity, nitric oxide response, and improvements in neuroplasticity/brain function. Even more importantly, only high intensity exercise allows for the release of growth hormones which improve the body’s ability to heal, as well as the release of opioids that allow you to feel 26

great while exercising. Exercise is also a great way to help improve depression and anxiety. It is important to note that oxidative stress and risk for overtraining syndrome do increase with high intensity exercise. So, a little hard exercise goes a long way. The bigger question in my mind has always been “Why is exercise so stressful on the body if it is so good for us?” The answer lies within the nervous system. Activities are generally controlled either by our parasympathetic nervous system (our “rest and digest” or “feed and breed” system) or the sympathetic nervous system (“fight or flight”). When the parasympathetic nervous system is working, the body can concentrate on relaxation, sleep, digestion, urination, defecation, etc. The sympathetic nervous system, on the other hand, controls the stress response, exercise, sweating, gut motility, etc. Even more importantly, these two control systems affect heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. Left to its own devices with no nervous system control at all, the heart would beat at around 80 to 100 beats per minute (vagal heart rate). However, since the heart is innervated by parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves, the heart rate is actually controlled by these nerves. When the parasympathetic nervous system is under control the heart rate will be lower. How low this will be is influenced by age, gender, health, and fitness level. Athletes often have very low resting heart rates, as a fit heart has very good vagal tone. The typical resting heart rate is between 70 to 80 beats per minute with an average resting heart rate of 70 beats per minute for a man and 75 beats per minute for a woman. When the sympathetic nervous system takes over control of the heart, the heart rate will increase to above 100 beats per minute. So the harder you exercise the more time your body spends under sympathetic control. Interval Training Program In order to maximize health using exercise you need to spend time doing high intensity exercise. At the same time it is also important to realize that many with chronic illness are already fighting a dominant sympathetic nervous system. The solution is an exercise program that is intense, but does not overly tax the nervous system. I have found in my practice that the best way to do this is to do short bursts of intense activity (at an appropriate level for that client) with sufficient rests between intervals to allow the nervous system to recover. While traditional forms of interval training may provide a minute or two of rest between intervals and allow for partial heart rate recovery, this may be inadequate for the nervous system to recover.
What I recommend is a 10 to 15 second activity burst (more on this later) followed by a recovery that may be no activity at all, or mild activity that returns the heart rate to just below or around 100 beats per minute. Pulse may be taken with a heart rate monitor, the monitors built into cardiovascular equipment (recumbent bike, treadmill, elliptical, etc.), or by simply manually taking your pulse either at the wrist (radial pulse) or neck (carotid pulse). Each work out should begin with a five to ten minute warm up at an easy pace. The length of the interval portion should be determined by the time that it takes to recover. My rule of thumb is that if it takes more than five minutes to recover between intervals, this is a sign you are overtraining. If recovery is five minutes or less the interval may be repeated. No more than 15 to 20 minutes of intervals are necessary. This should be followed by a five to ten minute cool down at an easy pace. Energy Systems Let’s get back to the 10 to 15 second activity burst. The first question people usually ask me- particularly personal trainers - is “Why is this so short?” The answer is quite simple, really. We have three distinct energy systems that help us to create energy at the cellular level. ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) is our cellular energy that we produce and is required for activity, biochemical processes, etc. The first system we use whenever we require energy is our ATP-PCr system. This system relies on the fact that at rest most cells (particularly muscle cells) will create ATP. Since this is active energy our body will actually take one of the phosphates away from this compound and store it attached to creatinine to create phosphocreatine (PCr) and Adenosine Diphosphate (ADP). Then, when your body requires a quick burst of energy lasting (you guessed it!) 10 to 15 seconds your body takes the extra phosphate group and adds it back to ADP to regenerate ATP. This is an anaerobic system, meaning that it does not require oxygen to function. If the ATP-PCr system cannot provide sufficient ATP for your requirements, then your body will produce energy using glycolysis. This system is also anaerobic and can generate more ATP from glucose so that energy will last up to two minutes long. The product of this system is lactic acid, which causes a burning sensation in your legs while sprinting. The lactic acid accumulates if you try to use this system for too long, but it can also be used to begin the third and final energy system, the oxidative system (which requires oxygen). The oxidative system can fuel much longer lasting activities and is the
primary energy system used for exercise lasting for five minutes or longer. Now that you have a basic understanding of energy systems, the last piece of the puzzle to understand is where in the cell these systems occur. While the oxidative system will generate the most energy it occurs in the mitochondria. The mitochondria are often not working at optimal levels in those with fatigue and chronic health challenges. To try and exercise in a way that further taxes the mitochondria is likely to cause more energy problems. On the other hand, glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm (thick gel that holds the organelles of the cell) and the ATP-PCr system takes place in the sarcoplasm which is similar to the cytoplasm found within a muscle cell. So it only makes sense to concentrate on anaerobic metabolism for those with mitochondrial dysfunction. By choosing to concentrate on using the ATP-PCr system we can hone in on using the energy system that is concentrated in the muscle cell and spares the mitochondria from exhaustive work. Yet, this system still allows us to generate adequate intensity to challenge the body and reap all of the benefits of exercise. When Should I Exercise When you exercise really depends on your own unique energy pattern, which is called your circadian rhythm. Since circadian rhythm is intimately tied to the stress hormone cortisol, it really influences how you feel throughout the day. For those who have low morning cortisol, they have difficulty waking up in the morning, require coffee or caffeine to function, have no appetite in the morning, and feel that their energy is lowest the first hour after waking up. For these individuals, a brief high intensity session within the first half hour of waking up is ideal. This session does not need to last more than ten minutes to be effective for restoring energy levels. It can be done using a bike, short sprints, push-ups, squats, jumping rope, or even running in place. Again, these exercises should be done in 10 to 15 second bursts and then allow the heart rate to recover to 100 or less. The high intensity bursts of exercise allow for increased levels of cortisol which can help to replenish depleted early morning energy levels. For those who have elevated cortisol levels (you can check cortisol levels using a 4-point salivary adrenal stress index test) or insulin resistance/type 2 diabetes, exercising before lunch may be more appropriate. This can help to improve insulin sensitivity and decreases the stress response for exercise.

Right-Sizing Exercise The term “high intensity” can be pretty scary for someone who has not exercised in a long time. The first step to any exercise program, particularly if you do have a medical condition, is to check with your physician to make sure that exercise is appropriate for you. Once you have your doctor’s clearance, you can then decide what sort of exercise appeals most. For those who have been severely ill or who are deconditioned, brief bouts of walking, chair squats (squat to a chair, stand up, and repeat) or recumbent biking are all appropriate. For those who are a bit more fit, strength training (8 to 10 repetitions per set) or sprints (can be on a treadmill, exercise bike, elliptical or swimming) are a better bet. The actual type of exercise is far less important than the intensity level and having sufficient recovery between intervals. Generally I encourage people to choose whatever exercise appeals most. The more you like the activity, the more likely you are to do it consistently.

bacteria, and has the ability to invade almost any tissue within the body. The symptoms individuals experience depend on what body region becomes infected. B. burgdorferi can cause such a wide array of symptoms it is often referred to as “The Great Imitator,” mimicking the signs of many other illnesses. Due to the diversity of symptoms it is important to have a doctor who is familiar with the disease in order to ensure proper diagnosis.
How Do I Know if I Have Lyme Disease? By: Tonya Pasternak, ND
C
onnecticut, the home of Lyme disease in the US, remains one of the most highly affected regions of tick-borne illnesses. The disease is caused by an infection from the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, and according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), there has been up to 30,000 reported cases annually. A bite from an infected nymph deer tick, also known as a blacklegged tick, is the most common route of transmission to humans. Because nymph ticks are about the size of a poppy seed, it can be extremely difficult to discover a bite. Symptoms If a person becomes infected there are three categories of symptoms that may be experienced. The first stage is referred to as “early localized.” During this stage the infection is relatively restricted to the area of the bite. The common bull’s-eye rash, Erythema Migrans, is among these early symptoms. However, it should be noted that reports show fewer than 50% of people with Lyme disease noticed a rash, therefore absence of the rash does not rule out the illness. Additionally, flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, headaches, and muscle aches may occur. Speaking with your doctor about the various aspect of Lyme disease can help improve prevention and also help you interpret any symptoms for early detection. If left untreated, Lyme disease has the potential to spread throughout the body, making symptoms more severe. This stage is known as “early disseminated” and can present within the first few months of an infection. Symptoms that arise during this stage are often severe and frequently have a neurological component. Intense headache, neck stiffness, and light sensitivity are indicative of meningitis, inflammation of the membrane that lines the brain. During this stage, a person may also experience rapid onset of facial paralysis, affecting one or both sides of the face. Memory loss, mood changes, body pains, sleep disturbances, and debilitating fatigue are also symptoms of early dissemination. Unfortunately for some, Lyme disease does not stop there. Whether treated or not, it can progress to the third stage called “late disseminated.” This stage can last for months or even years, and often times never fully resolves. Chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, shooting nerve pain, cognitive decline, paralysis, and depression are among the common lasting effects of the illness. While these three stages demonstrate the common manifestations of Lyme disease, symptoms can and do vary greatly among individuals. Because B. burgdorferi is a spirochete, a spiral shaped 30
Natural Nutmeg - July/August 2015
Diagnosing The diagnosis of Lyme disease is one based on a combination of exposure history, clinical presentation, and lab testing. Because of the size of deer ticks and the inconsistent development of the related rash, it can be nearly impossible to know for sure if there was an exposure. Symptoms can vary greatly and often mimic other illnesses, making a diagnosis based on clinical presentation also difficult. To complicate the matter further, lab testing has its own limitations as well. The CDC recommends a two-tiered approach including the ELISA and Western Blot tests to help with diagnosis. Each test is performed to assess for the presence of antibodies against B. burgdorferi in the patient’s blood. The problem with these tests are the high false negative rates, meaning there is a large percentage of people who may have Lyme disease, however the results come back negative. Studies report that false negatives can happen in up to 35% of all cases. While this two-tiered approach is the most commonly performed, other tests do exist, and can be used to help provide additional support for diagnosis. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests are used to identify the presence of DNA fragments specific to B. burgdorferi. Additionally, a culture test was released in 2011, which theoretically could help eliminate the ambiguity of other tests. While PCR and cultures are not commonly performed at conventional medical centers, certain Lyme literate doctors often utilize them to help determine the presence of the illness. Such doctors are striving to use better testing to provide the best care for their patients. Treatment The conventional treatment for Lyme disease, in accordance with the CDC, is a 10-21 day course of antibiotics, typically doxicycline or amoxicillin. Because of the difficulties in making an immediate and accurate diagnosis, treatment is often delayed, making a full recovery more difficult. While this preliminary treatment approach is sufficient for some, it is not always enough for others. Ridding the body of the bacterial infection is a crucial component of treatment. While this is the job of antibiotics, it can be hard for complete eradication. Since B. burgdorferi is a spirochete and can infiltrate deep into the body, it often resides in areas of poor circulation, making it difficult for the medicine to reach all necessary locations. Another reason why such treatment may not be sufficient is because this approach relies on addressing only one specific factor of the illness, killing bacteria. As mentioned before, Borrelia has the ability to infect and injure many regions of the body, including the brain, visceral organs, and the musculoskeletal system. While antibiotics work to eliminate the bacteria, they do not address the harm already done to the body. At our clinic, our aim is to not only stop the progression of the disease by eliminating the bacteria, but to also support the areas already weakened by the infection. The treatments
we use are individualized to each patient, helping to progress towards a more complete recovery. Confounding Factors Treating Lyme disease by focusing on eliminating the bacteria rather than treating the whole person is one reason some people do not fully heal. Another major factor is the presence of co-infections. While Lyme disease is specific to an infection from B. burgdorferi, ticks often carry other types of bacteria, viruses, and even parasites. Common co-infections found in our area include Ehrlichia Babesia, Anaplasma, and Bartonella. It is important to identify and treat any co-infections that may be contributing to a person’s illness. New Species of Borrelia While Borrelia burgdorferi and the co-infectious microorganisms have been in the Northeast for many years, it has recently been discovered that another species of Borrelia, Borrelia miyamotoi, is now in this region. This species has been found in two types of American ticks, including the common blacklegged deer tick. Symptoms of this particular infection could mimic those seen in the early stage of Lyme disease. Conventional testing for Lyme does not pick up the presence of this new species, and thus may further contribute to difficulties in accurately identifying the cause of a person’s illness. Again, speaking to a physician experienced in this field would be of most help in obtaining an accurate diagnosis. Staying Safe Speaking with your doctor on ways to prevent bites, what to do if bitten, and additional information on testing and treatment can help keep you and your family safe. More information can also be found on the Center for Disease Control’s website, as well as on LymeDisease.Org. Keep in mind that a holistic approach, one that treats the whole person rather than just the infection, often yields the greatest success. Find Your True North at the White Stallion Ranch
H
ave you ever walked into a resort or hotel and felt so relaxed you thought you were at home? That’s the immediate feeling I got when we arrived at the White Stallion Ranch. It’s probably because the True family has owned and operated the ranch for almost 50 years and they know what true (no pun intended) hospitality is and make sure each guest is treated that way. Surrounded by unspoiled desert, rugged mountains and the most beautiful and unique species of cactus you’ve probably ever seen, sits the White Stallion Ranch just outside of Tucson. It is a peaceful, unique place where you can reconnect with family, friends, nature and serenity. In fact, while we were there we met several groups of friends that have been making this dude ranch their annual vacation for years. Hollywood filmmakers have been coming to the area for over 70 years. Since the early days as a backdrop in Western feature films and the long-running location for the television series High Chaparral (1968-72), White Stallion Ranch has attracted attention from media outlets worldwide. The ranch has hosted prominent publications, photographers, filmmakers and journalists from around the globe. The media credits include such major highlights as: National Geographic; Sports Illustrated; Los Angeles Times, New York Times; GM, Dodge, Jeep and Toyota commercials; Today show; CBS Sunday Morning; Lonely Planet (BBC); Westerns and major motion pictures ranging from Arizona (1936) to The Last Blast (2006); and many others. It’s not difficult to see why so many people fall in love with this ranch. We checked into a spacious and charming suite with a private patio with views of the cactus gardens, mountains, and horse corrals. I loved the nice touch of having chaise lounges right outside your door to relax on and watch the sunset. Some suites include gas fireplaces or whirlpool bath tubs. Generous floor plans offer sunny, comfortable rooms with plenty of closet space and adjoining suites create deluxe family suites. With 41 guest rooms and The Hacienda, a lovely and private four-bedroom, three-bathroom home perfect for larger groups, you’ll find the perfect accommodation at the White Stallion Ranch. Another perk - eco-friendly soaps, shampoos, lotions and other amenities!

Natural Nutmeg - July/August 2015
One of the best things I found at White Stallion Ranch is that all the cooking is done for you so you don’t ever have to leave the property. A variety of meal options is offered to please meat lovers, vegetarians and everyone in between. They use fresh, quality ingredients and home-style cooking methods to serve flavorful meals throughout the day and all meals and snacks are included in your nightly rate. Breakfast includes a cooked-to-order menu as well as an extensive continental buffet, and the daily lunch buffet allows you to dine inside or on the patio with a selection of two entrees, side dishes and salads, a sandwich bar and fresh-baked cookies and fresh fruit. At 6pm the dinner bell is rung, calling you in after a long day riding – you can’t get more authentic than that. We were treated to barbecue chicken grilled outdoors with a full buffet of side dishes. If you get hungry between meals, snacks are always available, including fresh fruit, chips and salsa, peanuts and their famous homemade trail mix. After dinner, relax in your cabin while listening to the coyotes calling in the distance, which we heard both nights during our stay. Or there is evening entertainment every night like a moonlight bonfire with a cowboy singer, an astronomy show with large telescopes, line dancing lessons, nature and animal programs, or watercolor classes with the resident artist. The night we were there, we experienced a reptile, spider and lizard show-and-tell and I actually got to hold a tarantula, scorpion and 6 foot Burmese Python! But the real reason you come to a dude ranch is to ride, right? And what opportunities abound at White Stallion…slow rides, fast rides, mountain rides, all day rides, wine and cheese rides, lessons and team cattle penning. With one of the largest privately owned herds in Arizona, they have the right horse for every guest, from firsttime trailblazers to life-long riders. Enjoy these truly unique experiences in a setting surrounded on three sides by beautiful mountains. For guests who are comfortable on the fast ride, you’ll spend almost 8 hours in the saddle and cover 20 – 25 miles on the all-day ride with lunch served on the trail. Highlights of this ride include traveling through Saguaro National Park, Box Canyon and visiting a site with Native American petroglyphs. Or if cattle herding is calling to you, you and three teammates ride “Bonanza” style into a herd of cattle in their 2.35 acre rodeo arena and work to separate out three
cattle and move them into a pen. This is a timed event but you are welcome to ride at any speed at which you are comfortable. Team Penning lasts about one hour, and each team gets three rounds to better their time. Where else can you feel like you’re actually part of a rodeo! Need a break from the saddle? White Stallion Ranch offers many other amenities including a heated pool and hot tub, recreation room with a movie theater, fitness center and a petting zoo for the kids. One of the coolest things I learned that is offered at White Stallion are their workshops and clinics on animal communication and spiritual retreats. In a supportive atmosphere, you will learn to enhance the animal communication skills you already have (even if you don’t know it) and share in a fun and rewarding experience. By learning to tap into and use your innate abilities, you will quickly discover how you too can converse with the animals. The women’s retreats offer connection with horses in ways that make it easier to connect with yourself, clarify your direction and add an exhilarating new chapter to your life story. By their very nature, horses touch our spirits with their beauty, freedom, courage, power and heart. Attuned to subtle energies, they sense what’s going on with us and help us come to insights and learning that we don’t necessarily get by thinking, reading or talking.
All in all, the White Stallion Ranch is a place of beauty, serenity, peace, and discovery. The True family have created and maintained an authentic experience of a dude ranch with the comfort and hospitality of a luxury resort. I can’t think of a better way to find your true north. BERNIE
By Bernie Siegel, MD
The Wiser We Get
W
hen I was four years old I was home in bed with one of my frequent ear infections. I took a toy telephone I was playing with and unscrewed the dial and put all the pieces in my mouth as I had seen carpenters do with nails which they then pulled out to use. The problem was that I aspirated the pieces and went into laryngospasm. I can still feel my intercostals muscles and diaphragm contracting forcefully, trying to get some air into my lungs, but nothing worked and I was unable to make any sounds to attract help. I had no sense of the time but suddenly realized I was not struggling anymore. I was now at the head of the bed watching myself dying. I found it fascinating to be free of my body and a blessing. I never stopped to think about how I could still see while out of my body. I was feeling sorry for my mother who was in the kitchen and would find me dead, but I thought it over and found my new state preferable and intellectually chose death over life. Then for no apparent reason the boy on the bed vomited and all the pieces came flying out. He began to breathe again and I was very angry as I returned to my body against my will. I can still remember yelling, “Who did that?” My thought as a four year old was that there was a God who had a schedule and I wasn’t supposed to die now. So an angel apparently did a Heimlich maneuver on me is the way I would explain it today. I really do believe there is a schedule we create unconsciously because of later life experiences. Twice I have had my car totaled by people driving through red lights and once I fell off our roof when the top rung on my wooden ladder snapped off. In none of these incidents did any significant injury occur to my body.

Natural Nutmeg - July/August 2015
Most recently one of our cats disappeared when a door was left open. After several weeks with no sign of her I was sure she was killed by a predator. A friend I had made, Amelia Kinkade, is an animal intuitive who lives in Los Angeles. We live in Connecticut and Amelia has never been to our home or near it. I pestered her to tell me where the cat was and one day I received an email, without even sending Amelia a picture of the cat, and it detailed the house, yard, other animals and people who were involved in the cat’s life. The next day I went out and found the cat exactly where Amelia said it was hiding. She told me in the email, “The cat is alive because I can see through its eyes.” If that doesn’t make me a believer nothing will. I totally believe that consciousness is non-local and not limited to the body. I also have experienced this through the drawings and dreams of patients I have cared for which allows them to know their diagnosis and what the future holds for them. As Jung said, “The future is unconsciously prepared long in advance and therefore can be guessed by clairvoyants.” I believe it is this unconscious awareness which we each bring with us when we are born. So I do not believe we literally live many lives but that we bring with us the experience of previous lives. Thus the wiser we get the better the future will be for those who follow us. For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel-or Bernie, as he prefers to becalled-needs no introduction. He has touched many lives all overthe Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our Society grapples with today. Read Bernie’s regular blog posts on his website where you will also find his books, articles, and CDs: http://www.berniesiegelmd.com. See ad on page 41.
WHY AN ORGANIC MATTRESS IS RIGHT FOR YOU
While we sleep, our immune system recovers and prepares for the day ahead. If your mattress is filled with airborne allergens and chemical toxins, your immune system will battle these rather than
repair itself. Regular bedding & mattresses are laden with polyurethane foam, toxic flame retardants, and water or stain resistant chemicals.
When we found out what was in our mattress, my husband said, ‘Every mother in the world should know what they are putting their child on at night.’ That was 2004, and the Clean Bedroom was born. —Chris Chamberlin, Co-founder
