verything that enters your body produces a positive or negative result. This includes food, drink, chemicals, and maybe most importantly, thoughts. If what you are putting into your body is healthy, you will have a positive response. If it is unhealthy, you will get a negative response. The way you look and feel tomorrow is a direct reflection of the thoughts and actions you engage in and the food and drink you consume today.

Strong, pure positive thoughts and healthy food builds excellent health in the body, mind and spirit. There are many schools of thought as to what causes an individual to engage in an unhealthy lifestyle. Do negative thoughts cause one to eat poorly and have less regard for their health? Or does eating poorly and being unhealthy cause negative thoughts? Either way you look at it, it’s all interchangeable. To protect your body, you must protect your mind and vice versa. With a healthy body, mind & spirit, you have the ability to be fully engaged and can pursue your goals with the confidence that you will be able to accomplish them. Thus, your attention should always be placed on keeping perfect health. Live physically at the top of your game by taking a serious interest in your body on all levels: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Exercise today to preserve and enhance the self you attained yesterday and to ensure the self you desire to be. If you do not exercise, you will eventually lose all that you gain and your future along with it. The choice is yours; it begins by opting for the stairs instead of the elevator, fruit in place of chips, and active rather than sedentary activities. The secrets to good health are not complicated. They are known and waiting for you to discover them and, most important, to put them into practice. Eat a large variety of fruits and veggies, lean proteins and healthy fats. Do a combination of cardiovascular and strength training at least 3-5 times per week. Feed your soul through meditation, journaling or your favorite spiritual practice. The satisfaction of good health and fitness can be yours when you choose to make them priorities in your life. This month we’d like to help you with your healthy eating habits by showcasing some of our amazing Farmers Markets right here in CT! It’s my favorite time of year as there are so many delicious local fruits and veggies ready to be enjoyed – don’t miss a trip to the farm to pick your own strawberries! In Health and Happiness,

summer

?

memory

Erica Morawski

When I was younger, I used to spend the hottest days of the year hanging out at a local pool, otherwise known as my second home. My favorite days were the ones when I would get to the pool at the crack of dawn with just my sisters and the lifeguards. The air would be thick and heavy with dew, and the pool area would have a rare, relaxed morning quietness that only the cicadas would break. Always on these mornings, I would take a stone and toss it into the pool to hear that plunk sound as it would hit the still water. Still to this day I wake up early on summer mornings, walk to a local nearby pond, and toss a stone in the water just to hear that soothing plunk that would signify the beginning of a long, hot, fun summer day.

Luciana Shortal

I would say: Spending a few weeks at Grandma’s house each summer where we’d go to the town pool every day and “black & white” cookies were often on the menu for breakfast!

When I was 11, my parents had a Spanish exchange student named Maria stay with us for the summer. We became good friends and the following year I traveled to Vigo, Spain by myself to stay with her and her family at their oceanfront home and restaurant. I was only in Spain for a month, but when I returned home my mother didn’t even recognize me at the airport because I had changed so much. I was very tan with bleached blonde hair wearing tight jeans and high heels and even spoke with a slight Spanish accent. For years my father said I went over there as a girl and came back as a woman! It was one of the best summers I ever had!

Alexa Morawski

My favorite summer memory is from when I was about 7 years old, and involves my dad driving my sisters and me home after a long, hot, sunburn-filled day at the pool. Dripping wet, still in our bathing suits with towels wrapped around us, we jumped in the car and headed home for family dinner. It was the perfect hot and humid summer night weather that my family loves; so on the way home, we rolled down all the windows, including the sunroof, and let our sopping wet hair air-dry in the breeze. Spotting a family of deer through the evening light, my dad slowed down the car to let us get a better look. I don’t remember how many deer there were, or what they looked like, but I remember the smell of the grass, the feel of my damp hair slowly drying in the sticky air, and being with my family.

Dr. Diane Hayden, Publisher

My favorite childhood summer memory is spending a week every July in Ocean Grove, NJ with my family who also let me bring my best friend Amy! I still remember the first whiff of the salt air as we turned the corner onto Ocean Avenue and drove to our hotel, The Spray View Inn. Every morning I’d find my grandmother sitting in the white rocking chairs on the beautiful wrap around porch watching the sun come up and the seagulls feeding before we all walked over to the pancake house for breakfast. Amy and I would jump waves and play in the ocean all day and at night we’d walk the boardwalk and ride the ferris wheel that went through the roof of a building, go through the fun house with life size animals that moved in their cage, play the wheels of chance, enjoy an Orange Julius and have our fortune told by Madam Marie!

Chris Urso

My parents would rent a house at the Connecticut shore walking distance to the water with my extended family that included my 2 younger brothers, my Aunt, Uncle and 2 cousins, and my Grandmother (we called her Nonnie). We had an inflatable raft and Nonnie taught us how to “fish” for crabs between the jetty rocks. It’s the place where I remember hearing all the “new” disco songs of the 70’s on the radio, where I recall hearing the news about Elvis Presley’s untimely death, and where I saw the movie “Jaws” with my parents (which didn’t deter us from going in the water one bit)! www.NaturalNutmeg.com

Nutmeg “Nuggets” A TASTE OF HISTORY AND INNOVATION IN OXFORD, CT

T

ucked away in rural Oxford, Connecticut is a gem of a place for a beer nut like me. OEC (short for Ordinem Ecentrici Coctores, which roughly translates to Order of the Eccentric Boilers) is a brewery affiliated with distributor B. United International, who have been importing the best traditionally made beers, ciders, mead and sake from around the world since 1994. After B. United centralized their operations to Oxford, building a beautiful office and warehouse space, plans were made to start a brewery dedicated to traditional (and sometimes forgotten) brewing techniques and beer styles. Lambics, gruits, groditskes, berlinerweisse, goses, sours blended with meads…if they can brew it, they will! I first heard about OEC sometime around its grand opening in the summer of 2014, thanks to a chance meeting my husband had with Assistant brewer Tony Pellino. He brought home a business card, knowing my love of craft beer, and my interest was peaked. Being familiar with B. United’s incredible portfolio and the amount of care and innovation they take to ensure each beer is sold at its best, I knew that this venture was going to be incredible. I made it out for the first time that fall, and I immediately fell in love. The place is a wonder of experimentation mixed with a reverence for long-held and even forgotten brewing traditions. I took a “Three Sour Tour” (as it was called) of the facilities this May, which revealed the very many projects and experiments being undertaken, from the various barrel aging rooms to the greenhouses and fruit trees being grown to source as much of their materials right from their land. They have even built a bakery which will start baking bread using spent grain and run-off from the brewing process in the near future. We tasted it; it was delicious. There was talk of fermenting vinegars and other things in the future as well. This is not your father’s fizzy yellow beer. This isn’t even your bitter double IPA. Don’t come expecting what you are familiar with. These beers are primarily sour, are complex and sometimes difficult to get into. The price point is more akin to wine, due to the long fermentation processes, blending, aging and materials used, but at about $12-15 a 750ml bottle is very affordable. Come with an open mind, bring a friend and picnic lunch (and check the website to see what food truck might be there). Start with a flight and taste all OEC has to offer. The staff will happily answer all of your questions, and the tasting room is so lovely you’ll never want to leave. Plus there’s a foosball table. Check their Facebook page for the latest information. OEC At B. United International 7 Fox Hollow Road Oxford, CT 06478 Open: Saturdays, 12-7pm. Check their website for special events.

Baby Romaine— A Spring Darling

By Julie Wern

T

here are so many reasons to love the month of June summery weather, school letting out, and the opening of farmer’s markets. It may sound weird but one of my favorite things about June is baby lettuce. Tender, mild, vividly colored baby lettuces hail in the growing season in the most delicate, yet delicious way. While I love all varieties of baby lettuce, I recently learned some interesting information about the romaine variety that I thought I would share. Romaine often gets a bad rap as a lettuce with a lot of water but not a lot of nutritional value, like a slightly fancy version of iceberg. Yet I was recently surprised to learn that romaine lettuce is a rather nutrient dense food. In fact, romaine ranks high among all lettuces (not including spinach and other dark leafy greens) in the amount of folate it contains. Folate is the bioavailable form of vitamin B-9 and is crucial for many essential functions in the body including cellular growth and regeneration. As such it has been named an important element in the prevention of Alzhiemers disease, neural tube defects, cancer, and perhaps even mood disorders. Folate is considered such a vital element that a synthesized compound called folic acid is mandated by our government to be added to most wheat products to help boost levels of B-9 in the food supply. However, folic acid does not readily convert to folate in the body, which means that deriving this nutrient from whole foods like romaine is the best source for achieving nutrient sufficiency for this important vitamin. In addition to folate, romaine lettuce is also high in vitamin C and beta carotene, as well as moderately high in minerals like copper, iron, manganese and potassium. It also contains dietary fiber important for digestive health, along with phytochemicals critical for detoxification and cancer prevention. I’ve come across conflicting reports of the relative nutritional merits of baby versus mature lettuces, but even if baby romaine are not miniature nutrient bombs, they sure are tasty and fun. While mature romaine is crisp with a slight bitterness to it, baby romaine is ultra tender and sweet. Most baby romaine in this country gets made into salads. Yet this is not the only way to use it. Think out of the box and try sautéing it, or put it in a smoothie where it’s mild taste and texture makes it virtually unnoticeable. Here is one of my favorite ways of using baby romaine when I’m not in the mood for a salad. Julie Wern is a psychologist turned stay-at-home-mom turned caterer. All Your Questions about Spirituality, Energy and Health Answered!

I

am grateful for the opportunity to help people experience the world I feel we are moving through and stepping into. This column is question and answer format to provide those interested, a chance to ask questions about spiritually, energetics, health and life and how it can all come together in a grounded, functional and applicable way, so the reader can navigate life with peace, joy and compassion in a world that is changing so fast. Every month I welcome you to submit your mind, body, spirit questions directly to me at questions.rondamico@gmail.com or through my website at www.rondamico.net. Q: My 11-year-old son is struggling with anxiety issues. He’s on two different medications, which is helping some, but he needs to be home-schooled because it is too stressful. Can he be helped with energy work? A: Yes. To address this we need to look at the root cause of what it is creating the anxiety to help him come back to what would be for him, balance. I’m noticing the birth process was very stressful and he’s carrying the emotional angst of that with him. Please realize that what one person would consider stress could be of no significance to another. So even if the birth process for the mother may have been easy or not a big deal, it could be deeply stressing for the newborn. The next piece is this child is highly energetically sensitive. Meaning he is not only sensitive to human/biological energetics but artificial forms of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Therefore, during the birth process he was feeling everyone’s energy in the delivery room and the EMFs in the room as well as the overhead lights shocked his visual system when his eyes first opened. This lead to a quick shock to the central nervous system and his energy fields, which did not have a chance to clear. As he gets older and lives a normal life he is continually exposed to the energetic influences of other people and increased exposure to EMFs (WiFi, cell phones, electronic devices, overhead lighting fixtures) in the home, school and businesses. This can and often does lead to a progressive overload to an already taxed system and destabilization of the body and energy fields even further.

es present and some of these areas are quite minor but influential when you look at the whole of what is happening. Accumulation is a factor as well. The way to address this is to begin clearing the initial trauma and then following how his systems present, find the best way to release and clear the accumulation within him. This will be accomplished mostly through energy work to clear the body systems and fields and correct any deeper imbalances at the cellular and possibly subatomic levels. Various supplements may also be helpful to clear and balance the body systems as well. Ron D’Amico has been supporting people in the field of holistic health for more than 25 years. He has grown to become an accurate and effective healer with his own developed forms of energy healing that support all levels of life - mind, body, spirit and soul. He holds a BS from Springfield College in Health and Fitness after which he created a personal training business with a focus of functional fitness, conditioning and post-rehab for chiropractors and physical therapists for more than 10 years. After many years of trying to resolve his own emotional and physical issues through traditional methods of medical care with little to no success, he began searching in the area of complimentary health. His practice focuses on addressing the root cause(s) of what created the imbalance within the person. By addressing the mind, body, energetics, spirit and soul, the healing process is awoken and the person is guided to become actively involved in their own healing journey. Ron D’Amico can be reached at info.rondamico@gmail.com. See ad on page 19.

The emotional imbalances are in the areas of shock, fear, anger, frustration and anxiety. I’m also noticing some toxic residue in his body. These are in the form of chlorine, laundry detergent, antibiotic, bacterial and vaccine residue and some metals. The areas that feel to be most affected by this are various areas of the brain, limbic area, adrenals, kidney, spleen, heart, lungs, respiratory diaphragm, jejunum, pancreas, sacrum, pelvic floor, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 8th, 9th, 15th chakras, torus field and bioplasmic field. He’s also not fully in his body. This may seem to be a lot, but this is just how the influencwww.NaturalNutmeg.com

Head Out to Our Local CT Farmers Markets this Summer Submitted by Olivia Piper, Natural Nutmeg Writing Intern

T

he sun has finally come back to our state, flowers are blooming, bees are buzzing and spring has arrived, and with it: farmers market season! Many communities throughout Connecticut host fantastic farmers markets during the summer months, (all of which can be viewed at www.ctnofa.org/FarmersMarkets.htm) and here at Natural Nutmeg we have assembled a list of our favorite farmers markets throughout the state.

FAIRFIELD COUNTY Black Rock Farmers Market – The Black Rock Farmers Market in Bridgeport is a beautiful local farmers market that aims to serve the community of Bridgeport by providing them with locally grown produce, healthy living tips and by giving local artisans an economically advantageous platform to sell their goods. The market is a welcoming space that sells not only locally produced food from approximately 20 different local producers, and fruits and vegetables from 4 local farms, but also handcrafted items such as soaps, jewelry and artwork. Black Rock Farmers Market is partnered with SNAP and WIC and is open on Saturdays from 9am-1pm, from June 18th-October 15th, and is located on the field next to St. Ann Church at 481 Brewster Street in Bridgeport, CT.

Natural Nutmeg - June 2016

HARTFORD COUNTY Collinsville Farmers Market – Collinsville is the definition of a quirky, laid-back Connecticut town, and the Collinsville Farmers Market is the ultimate representation of its namesake. The market supports over a dozen local farms that bring the fruits (and vegetables) of their labor to the market each and every week. Additionally, the market hosts local musicians from all over Connecticut who provide a party atmosphere. Collinsville itself is the perfect place to spend a day, and with a yoga studio, an art gallery, kayaking and bike paths right next door to the farmers market, the possibilities are endless. The Collinsville Farmers Market takes place every Sunday from 10am-1pm, rain or shine, from June 12th-October 23rd. Due to construction, the first few weeks of the Collinsville Farmers Market will be held behind the Canton Community Center at 40 Dyer Avenue. The market will then be moving back to its regular location, The Town Hall Parking lot (at the corner of Route 179 and Main Street) in Canton, CT (across from the Canton Historical Society).

Integration of Conventional Medicine with Complementary and Alternative Medicine By Allison E. LaBelle,, BSN, RN

N

urses are among the most trusted professionals, devoting their careers to caring for other people. Holistic nursing is the core of nursing education with the practice of healing the whole person by incorporating biological, psychological, and spiritual dimensions. With the tremendous advances in conventional medicine and technology people are living significantly longer. This brings about the need for more caring professionals to provide care for this population. The use of both conventional medicine and Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) help to integrate the common thread between the two by focusing on individualizing care, treatment of the whole person, promoting self-care and self-healing with preventative methods. With the underlying basis of nursing, who could be better than an advanced practice nurse practitioner (APRN) to help bridge this gap in treatment between conventional medicine and CAM. The most frequent users of CAM practices are those with more serious and debilitating medical conditions such as cancer, chronic pain, and HIV. The CAM practices that are most commonly used by these groups consist of: nutritional approaches (macrobiotic, vegetarian, gluten-free, organic, non-GMO), massage, herbs, acupuncture, meditation, imagery, exercise, and overall lifestyle changes. Providing the best possible care to the population is represented by having a healthcare provider that is knowledgeable of these practices, open to referring their patients to a CAM provider, and integrating their conventional health practices with CAM therapies. It is not right to say that all traditional medicine is the correct way to practice medicine, as it is not right to say CAM is the correct way to heal a person. Nurse practitioners have a unique advantage by already having the nursing and nurturing background and the advanced degree to provide a higher level of medical care to their patients. Conventional medicine has focused on the use of pharmaceuticals, surgical, and other technology approaches to dominate their health care; thus leading to the decreased emphasis on prevention and wellness promotion. Many individuals have made their decisions to use CAM instead of or in addition to conventional medicine. The integration of conventional medicine and CAM would allow for the best components of both practices to help promote

health, prevent disease and treat illness. Some obstacles to the integration of these two practices are not only scientific, but also educational, regulatory, and political. Future changes must touch on each of these components to help provide a well-rounded wellness to the United States population. Including courses in alternative medicine while receiving a nursing or nurse practitioner degree is a wonderful step to help integrate CAM into practice. Continuing education programs aimed at CAM therapies would improve knowledge and may also provide for increased medical insurance reimbursement and coverage. The continuation of alternative therapy research through institutions like the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) will help to strengthen this practice and to alleviate concerns and obstacles for use. The use of complementary and alternative medicine allows the nurse practitioner to provide individualized care with the focus on promoting one’s health. Each patient has their beliefs and practices that must be discussed openly and be addressed during each visit with their primary care provider. Whether the healthcare provider is capable within their scope of practice to provide CAM or they refer their patient to a CAM provider, they should work as a collaborative team to provide the best possible care for the patient. Society needs to work on preventing disease and illness, promoting one’s health, and taking ownership for their care; having a nurse practitioner knowledgeable in conventional and CAM therapies by their side throughout the journey will be instrumental for a healthy nation.. Allison E. LaBelle BSN, RN is a Certified Pediatric Nurse at Connecticut Children’s Medical where she has spent her 15year nursing career working as a staff nurse on a medical-surgical unit caring for children. Recipient of the Nightingale Nursing Award in 2006 for excellence in nursing. Currently she is enrolled at the University of Saint Joseph to obtain her Master of Science in Nursing degree, on the Family Nurse Practitioner track. In addition to her career, she is a loving mother to two amazing boys and wife to the most understanding, supportive husband. She plans on taking a holistic, integrative approach in practice as a nurse practitioner following graduation in May 2017. Contact information: alabelle@usj.edu

The Evolution of a Market Manager and a Farmers Market... A Q&A WITH MARTHA MAGUIRE ABOUT BRANFORD ALPS FARMERS MARKET

How did you become interested in opening a Farmers Market? Call me a bike seat and armchair farmer. While my children were in elementary school, my husband and I bought a bike trip to the Amish country in Lancaster County, PA at a charity auction. Our passion for touring farm and vineyard country by bicycle began. As we biked around Connecticut I became aware of how threatened our local farms are. Land prices are exorbitant, farmers are aging out of the business, their kids are pursuing more lucrative professions, and regulations are stacked against small family farms, and on and on. My family has a strong tradition of participation in environmental causes, so when I came to a period of my life when I felt I could give back to my community with both time and resources, a new farmers market was on a scale I could launch. Farmers don’t have time to market their products, so this was a perfect job for me, their biggest fan. The goal of our non-profit market is to encourage sustainable farming and open spaces by offering farmers a retail outlet for their products. The market also aims to increase the access to and affordability of healthy, CT grown products by bringing these foods into the commercial district of Branford along a public bus route and where there is ample off street parking. The market doubles food stamp dollars (SNAP) and all our farmers are required to accept Farm Market Nutrition Program vouchers (WIC and Senior). The market also donates $500 in market tokens to the Branford Food Pantry each week to provide fresh, healthy food at the pantry the following day and hands out market vouchers at the CT Food Bank’s free food distribution centers in Branford and East Haven. When did you become interested in eating local foods? As we biked to markets we discovered vegetables we hadn’t eaten before and talked to the farmers about new recipes. It is so

much more fun to shop knowing that your food dollars are supporting people who are passionate about what they do. Most of the farmers we met had other jobs to support their love for the earth and farming. I find it intolerable that farmers lose money providing us with delicious, safe food! According to the CT department of agriculture, over 65% of farmers in CT lose money. Food, shelter, clothing, and health care are considered necessities. Contractors and real estate brokers turn a profit. Clothing designers and even discount & outlet stores make money. Medical device, pharmaceutical companies, and doctors are entitled to a profit. Why must hard working farmers subsidize our delicious dinners? Americans spend a smaller percentage of their income on food than citizens in Europe and throughout most of the world. Cheap industrial food is making us fat and contributing to multiple chronic diseases. Are there many farmers markets already in Connecticut? There are more than 200 farmers markets of varying kinds in CT. The department of agriculture reports that the dollars spent at all markets is not growing, so it is important to educate more people about the value of shopping from their local farms as well as to find ways to make food shopping from local sources more convenient and affordable. The less affluent a shopper is, the closer food sources need to be to their homes, children’s schools, health centers, or places of work. How long did it take you to plan and set up the market before you opened in 2015? It took two years to create language defining a farmers market to pass the Branford Planning and Zoning board and then to have the commercial parking lot site approved as the location for a weekly market.

What were some unexpected hurdles? Our market is unique in our four town health district. All our products are CT Grown or produced. We offer tasting samples and sell a wide range of foods. The residents who were familiar with farmers markets all had a personal vision of what we were. People assumed we were open on the weekends, for example, but we are an evening market, open from 4-7 pm on Thursdays. Many looked for us on the town green. Others thought we only sold fruits and vegetables, forgetting that raising animals for dairy products, meat, eggs, and even soap is farming too. Still more hadn’t thought about buying seasonal food on a weekly basis. Few shoppers have an understanding of seasonal produce as they are used to buying anything, from a distant region or country, any day of the year. I believe we disappointed many customers on our opening day because we didn’t have local tomatoes and corn. Our vendors offered lush herbs and seedlings, early greens, colorful radishes and sugar snap peas along with cheeses, meats, and breads - enough to fill supper plates all week, but the complaint was that we didn’t have enough food at the market. During the harvest season, September and October, when the tomatoes and corn were plentiful, school had begun and residents fell into their autumn habits, forgetting that our farmers were at their peak production. Our tent was especially festive late in the season, illuminated by twinkly lights. Locating picnic tables under the tent created an intimate atmosphere while musicians continued to serenade customers. Do all farmers markets accept food stamps? Most urban farmers markets accept food stamps and many have incentive programs. Food Stamp incentive programs are rare in suburban markets, although there is food insecurity in these regions as well. The Branford Alps Farmers Market doubles up to $20 of SNAP dollars per customer per market day. A client swipes their EBT card and receives wooden market tokens worth twice what they swiped. How did you find the vendors? Or did the vendors find you? We needed to recruit vendors our first year, primarily by meeting farmers at other markets and contacting vendors on the lists provided by the CT Department of Agriculture. As market manager, I visited each farm to review their farming practices and

to assure myself that their products would all come from their own farm. Joining a new market is a major financial gamble for farmers, but they were convinced by our investment in their success. The market provided marketing, a glamorous big top tent, entertainment, a food court with picnic tables, food trucks, and live music. The farmers paid minimal fees and didn’t have to set up their own pop-up tents. They could park directly behind their booths which made it easier to set up their wares. The tent also encouraged a sense of community, a valuable benefit in an isolated profession. The farmers could network amongst themselves as well as educate the public about their farms and products. Vendors have contacted me for the second season, so we are continuing to diversify our offerings. This year we are adding more fruit, mushrooms, and seafood chowders and bisques. Who are the farmers at your market and what do they sell? Do they sell the same things every week? All our farmers have their farms in Connecticut and only sell what they grow or raise on their own farm. As a result our offerings are seasonal. Some of the farmers have hoop houses which help them extend their seasons. They sell vegetables, flowers, fruit, mushrooms, dairy, poultry, and meat. Although not all our farmers have paid for official organic certification, they are concerned about the health of their lands and are moving towards the most sustainable methods they can. All the farmers are comfortable discussing their methods of fertilization and pest control with clients. Other vendors sell CT produced breads and pastries, prepared foods, body care products, and some crafts. Part of the fun of attending farmers markets during the course of the summer and fall is learning to eat with the seasons. How was Thursday afternoon chosen as the best time to have a market in Branford? Many of our farmers sell at a variety of markets and we wanted to respect their existing commitments. Thursday evening has the advantage of attracting people who have 9 to 5 jobs and want to pick up food for the weekend and beyond. Families can come and be fed and entertained during the afternoon snack or dinner hours. This year we are partnering with the Guilford Art Center to provide a craft program for

children during the market hours. Farmers markets are an ideal way for kids to experiment with new foods in a welcoming, interactive environment. Why aren’t all the vendors at your market food vendors? Many farmers markets in Connecticut provide a retail opportunity for craft and body care entrepreneurs. Farmers markets are a low budget way for small businesses to test new products before launching a web or store front presence. Our tent accommodates about sixteen vendors and must be full to provide a festive atmosphere. We host only five vegetable farmers, plus poultry, meat,

eggs, cheese, mushroom, bread and pastries, prepared foods, beverages, and flower vendors. As we work with the health department and recruit a greater variety of CT produced food vendors, we will have fewer nonfood booths.

The market will continue to experiment with ways to reach more clients with food assistance needs. I will distribute market vouchers at CT Food Bank free food distributions centers, for example. There will be also be a rewards program for “Frequent Farmer” shoppers at the market.

What kind of craft vendors have been at your market? Do you have any future dreams for this market? Our vendors sell jewelry, body care products, ceramics, textiles, pet accessories and more. We discovered that inexpensive jewelry, body care products, and items related to food (aprons, placemats, etc...) sold the best. As the weather got chillier, mittens and hats were a success. The market never hosted more than one craft and one body care booth on any given market day. What non-profit organizations have had booths? Each week the market offered a booth to a local non-profit for them to bring awareness of their mission to the public. Everyone from the Community Garden to the animal shelter to the public library to the local walking and biking trail associations to hunger awareness groups, took advantage of our offer. Why did you want food trucks at the market? Convenience is everything in today’s society. Everyone multitasks. Providing prepared food as well as fresh farm products at the market makes a Thursday evening shop both a quick weeknight supper and a way to plan for a healthy home cooked meal on the weekend. If kids help select ingredients, they are more likely to want to help with the preparation and to eat the meal. How is the market in 2016 different from the market last year? Our food vendors are more diverse and we will have more food sampling to make the shopping experience more interactive. The craft program with the Guilford Art Center is more developed.

I dream that families will shop and cook together. Our families and our land will be healthier. What are some recipes that you like making with the food you buy from your market? Last year I learned to roast chicken in my crock pot. The variety of colorful peppers available at the market are beautiful simply roasted or tossed in a pan with a bit of olive oil until hot. Some like them hot and some like them sweet. I kept meaning to take photos of our dinners, but they looked so tasty that they were half consumed before I thought of taking a picture. Many of my favorite meals are what I call “shop and chop”. Stir some homemade pesto or herbs into your favorite homemade dressing, add eggs or cheese for protein, a slice of sourdough or sprouted grain bread with pasture raised butter and cinnamon, and presto, a delicious meal! A seasonal fruit with with fresh cream or cheese is an ideal dessert. Where can people find more information? Do you have a website? Facebook? Twitter? Instagram? Infertility, A Guy’s Perspective By Mark P. Leondires, N.D.

J

une is National Men’s Health Month. According to the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, infertility affects both men and women equally. However, when it comes to diagnosis and treatment, women undergo a far more extensive process. For women, there are blood tests, internal exams, and discussions that delve into the personal and private details of their sex life. This is all just part of the diagnostic process that’s done prior to determining a treatment path that will require regimented dedication, and may include more invasive procedures. For men, when it comes time for testing and treatment, the process is painless. Most of the time, it involves providing a semen specimen twice – once for diagnosis, and a second time as part of the treatment plan. But this doesn’t tell the whole story, as men are often left wondering what more they can do to support their partners. It’s a Team Sport Infertility should always be viewed as a team sport. After 12 years of practicing fertility medicine in Fairfield County, I am still humbled almost daily by my patients. To me, the most impressive feats occur when couples take charge of their lifestyle habits, together. It’s about being a good teammate, and recognizing when to encourage, motivate, and support your partner. Reproductive endocrinology, which is the field of medicine that studies the hormones connected with our fertility and reproductive health, is affected by diet, sleep habits and vices. In just 90 days, men and women can vastly change their overall health, their fertility and even the future health of their children. Making healthy choices is not always easy, but it can be easier if couples do it together. As the days continue to grow longer, and the weather continues to warm, there is no better time to carry out a few positive lifestyle choices! In honor of National Men’s Health Month, here are 6 simple lifestyle changes that any couple can accomplish together this June:

1. Sleep. While you are sleeping, your body is busy recovering from the day’s physical and emotional wear and tear. Sleep is also instrumental in regulating hormones, including testosterone and other factors for sperm production. Encourage each other to go to bed an hour earlier. Even one more hour of sleep can have an impact. 2. Focus On Your Diet. A plate of fresh fish and roasted vegetables can be delicious and is a great alternative to a plate of pasta or some other temptation. Try to make smart eating choices together, and perhaps even cook the meal together. 3. Cut Back on Drinking. Alcohol is an added stress to the body that should be consumed in moderation. No more than 1-2 servings per day should be consumed. 4. Quit Smoking. This is not about moderation. Smoking damages women’s eggs, men’s sperm and even has long-lasting health implications for the children you are hoping to conceive. 5. Limit Caffeine Intake. It seems counter intuitive, but caffeine robs energy and diminishes the quality of sleep. Limit caffeine to 300 mg per day, which is about two regular cups of coffee, and do not consume it less than six hours before bedtime. 6. Exercise. Low impact exercise can be a great time to reconnect, as well as an enjoyable method for releasing good-mood endorphins and managing weight. I encourage my patients to take a walk together. Here are a few bonus tips that are key to maintaining a healthy relationship while navigating the waters of fertility treatment. Remember, you are in it to win it, together! Share a Laugh There’s no denying that infertility treatment will have its highs and lows. Remembering to laugh or at least smile together will make the tough times more bearable. Couples should do something together that they enjoy, something that they would have done even before trying to have a child. For example, go to a movie or enjoy a lazy Sunday morning. Talk. Talk. Talk. Communication is important throughout fertility treatment. Couples should talk about what they envision for their family, what treatments they are willing to do (and which ones they are not) and

22

Natural Nutmeg - June 2016

how they are feeling about the experience. Even when couples cannot express themselves, it is important for husbands and wives to say they are having trouble pinpointing their emotions. At RMACT, we have two licensed clinical social workers on staff who work with patients as individuals and as couples. We also offer support groups to give patients a network of people going through similar situations. It is O.K. to Stumble Every now and then, even rocks crumble. When couples are striving to make smart decisions and be supportive of each other, there are bound to be moments when the goal is too lofty. Couples should be honest about how they are feeling. The strength and love of a couple can be tested by infertility. This experience is not simply a hardship; it is also an opportunity to grow as a couple. When couples support each other and share the experience, they are more likely to find success for their relationship and for their family. Dr. Mark P. Leondires, medical director and lead physician with Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut (RMACT), is board certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Being a Mindful Man in a Crazy World By Craig Fasullo, ND very day in my practice I speak to patients about the significant role that stress plays in our lives. We discuss the tendency toward an overactive ‘fight or flight’ response within the nervous system and its downstream effect on nearly every other part of the body. We are constantly “fighting the bear” (usually many bears) throughout our waking day, and too often that evolves into broken and aggravated sleep at night. Most people, both men and women, can acknowledge this trend in their lives, but it is quite another thing to figure out what can be done about it. At least partially due to cultural gender roles it can be more difficult to access these issues for men, who often do not have the emotional support, training, or community with which to consciously navigate this field.

E

Of course, it is obvious that there are many shades of the individual man, not all of whom have difficulty accessing their mental/ emotional state of being. Still, there is little discussion around these issues for most men, especially those of the baby boomer generation. Understanding that, let’s ride the stereotype here, in hope that each person may be able see at least a small piece of themselves within it, and from there be able to grow. Much has been written on what it means to be a man in modern America. For more in depth discussion, I recommend Susan Faludi’s Stiffed and Robert Bly’s Iron John Why Bother with Mindfulness? As chronic stress has been shown to have negative effects on so many body systems, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that any method that can reduce stress will improve many parameters of health. At this point there is a vast amount of medical research in the field of mind-body medicine, showing beneficial effects of numerous mindfulness techniques for the treatment of medical issues ranging from high blood pressure to anxiety/depression, and back pain to sexual dysfunction. Actually, there are very few disease states that have not seen at least some degree of improvement with mindfulness interventions. It literally changes how your brain works. Numerous studies point to improved productivity at work, by way of measurably enhanced cognitive function and increased overall efficiency. And the effects even go beyond your own body. A 2015 study showed that among single people, “women were more attracted to men higher in dispositional mindfulness, beyond the effects of physical attractiveness.” With all this evidence, the question shouldn’t be if, but how.

24

Natural Nutmeg - June 2016

What Does It Mean to be Mindful? If we look to Miriam Webster, mindfulness can be defined as “the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one’s thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis.” Seems easy enough, right? After all, we’re always thinking about something. Actually, it’s more likely to be a handful of things all at once. So an oversimplification might be something like, “feeling how you feel.” It’s paying attention to what’s on your mind in the present moment Is Mindfulness Compatible with Manliness? For many men, mindfulness invokes a certain image that makes them a bit uncomfortable – yoga poses, chanting circles, and a general sense of woo-woo spirituality. A few decades back, the folk singer Utah Phillips poked fun at the growing new age men’s movement, describing them as “caterwauling in the wilderness… flailing away at drums…and dragging their scrotums through the underbrush.” To some degree, the stereotype still sticks, though you only have to look at the medical literature, as well as popular culture, to see that mindfulness for both genders has certainly hit the mainstream. Indeed, even Veterans Affairs is on board. There are numerous mindfulness therapies being used at VA hospitals across the country, the most fascinating of which are bringing significant life-saving relief to patients suffering from the crushing effects of post-traumatic stress disorder. Being a Mindful Man Given the stereotypical male “aversion to feelings,” I believe that there is a tendency to emotionally dumb down the mindfulness discussion, or dismiss it outright. Instead, it’s important to meet men where they are. Consider this idea of “awareness.” If we look to evolution, the awareness that is vital to being a man is a focus on the external. Looking out for enemies or predators, and ensuring the safety of the tribe were among the “male duties.” Mindfulness is an internalization of that attention, toward the battles that are being fought within our own minds. The notion of “fierce compassion” fits well into what it means to be a mindful male. There is no sacrifice of strength - quite the opposite. Think of the comradery within an army platoon. Or the many individuals who stood with Martin Luther King in resistance against race inequality. The heart of this work is in being aware of anger and

fear, and eventually reframing them into a more beneficial and productive purpose. In the office we explore individual roadblocks and apprehensions, both external and self-induced. The first step is the simple act of creating some space for mindfulness in your life. Take a few quiet moments to ask yourself how you are feeling. In that moment. In your life in general. As men, our general tendency is to try to solve problems. In this case, worry less about the solution, and just allow the feelings to be present. There are so many avenues and techniques within mindfulness practice. There is no right answer, only the openness to explore. For further information, check out the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn, professor of medicine and creator of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at University of Massachusetts. It can also be as easy as starting with a mindfulness app on your cell phone.

Calling All Men… Are you STRESSED OUT? By Lisa Zaccheo, MA, BCH, BC e know that even moderate levels of prolonged stress have countless negative effects on the body, including insomnia, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, headaches, GERD, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, heart issues, weight gain, decreased sex drive or erectile dysfunction and - yes - even cancer, to name just a few. It also takes a toll on the mind, creating memory impairment, confusion, mental exhaustion, a short fuse, detachment and anxiety, which can often lead to depression.

W

Let’s Talk About Stress It’s stressful even thinking about stress, and for many men it’s even more stressful trying to talk about stress, because it has been deeply ingrained that they have to be tough enough to handle whatever life throws their way. Even when they’re not feeling tough, they feel that they have to maintain the outward façade of being “OK.” To men, having people see that they’re stressed equals vulnerability, which in turn causes more stress. Many men also don’t have the full range of emotional language that women have, because they haven’t had the practice or the support systems that women have had to talk about their feelings. So men tend to bottle up their stress more than women, which is doubly detrimental. As I was researching for this article, which for me entails a mix of information gathering and interviewing, I experienced first hand the challenges that men have connecting with and expressing their feelings around stress. It ran the gamut between denial, “I’m never stressed; I don’t know what you’re talking about,” when that clearly wasn’t the case, to “I’m stressed but I don’t know what is causing it, and it makes me feel uncomfortable trying to talk about it,” to “I plead the fifth.” My heart goes out to my male counterparts, because we all get stressed by life in this modern world and need support and tools to learn how to manage it, so it doesn’t do the damage described above. Women’s Vs. Men’s Roles We women have had our challenges adjusting to the changing roles over the past 50 years or so. Not that long ago our primary role was to take care of the house and the kids and leave the working world to the men. I think we’ve done a great job of adjusting to being out in the working world while still taking care of the bulk of the responsibilities of the home and children. In fact, I think it’s been an easier adjustment for women to go out into the working world than it has been for men to share more of the emotional aspects of home and family and has added another layer of stress that wasn’t there before. Women shifted from the domestic, emotional world to the 26

more logical, analytical world; and men are working to shift from the logical, black-and-white work world to the living-in-the-grey emotional world of home and the complexities of emotions that don’t make a lot of logical sense. It’s easier to shift into logic than it is into emotion, which has created some challenges and additional stressors for men. The Pace of Life The world has changed significantly over the past 50 years, most noticeably the pace. To think that back in 1985, only 30 years ago, the computer was in its infancy. I remember working on a typewriter my first job out of college when “Wite-Out” was both a blessing and a curse. Then came the cell phone, which caused the pace of life to speed up significantly. The speed of technology moved faster than the speed of evolution, and our brains, which were used to working at one pace for a long, long time, had difficulty adjusting to a pace that was double its normal speed and is getting faster by the day. Now we have technology that allows us to listen to TV shows and podcasts one-third faster, so we can cram more into our day. STRESSFUL!! Pace of life is one of the top 5 stressors that men experience. The other four are their health, their job, family and relationship expectations, and finances. I’m sure the interrelatedness of all 5 has become apparent in that health is affected by the other 4 factors. Men, in general, are unhealthier than women. This pattern starts pretty much at birth, with more male babies not surviving than females, and is then compounded by the fact that most men will put off going to the doctor for as long as possible until things get so dire that they can’t not go. So even though they’re not taking great care of themselves, they still worry about their health, which causes more stress and takes a greater toll on health - a “Catch 22” if I’ve ever seen one. Performance and Job Stress Performance success is a major concern for most men, as they place their value on how they’re compared to others in the work world. I work with many high-level executives whom you’d think would be the most secure in their jobs, but they’re not. They struggle with imposter syndrome and the constant fear of being pushed off the pedestal by a competitor. They also worry about keeping up with their peers and being accepted within the pack. They typically do not have an emotional outlet. Most men don’t have a large number of friends, and when they do connect socially, maybe at a sporting event or on the golf course, they’re not talking about what’s really going on and certainly not talking about their feelings or stressors. They’re working to be seen as having it all together and keeping the kinks in their armor well hidden.

Job stress is tied into financial stress and has increased significantly over the years, with the cost of everything going up, up, up much faster than the increase in pay in most jobs. All the basic survival needs have increased, including homes, utilities, food, clothing, schooling and medical costs, so now it can often be a struggle to make ends meet, never mind save for that coveted vacation or retirement. Relationship Stress Last but not least, they worry about relationships and family. With so many demands on their energy and time, very often relationships with friends and spouses take a back seat. They worry about whether they’re doing a good enough job of taking care of the family’s needs and very often feel overwhelmed with the emotional demands that weren’t part of being a man in the past. The expectations then were so much simpler than they are now. Concern for the Future Men are losing sleep over the future and fearing the unknown. “Am I going to get that promotion?” “Am I going to be able to keep my job with the younger, lower-paid crop of workers coming into the field?” “Am I going to be able to keep up with the demands of life?” “Does my wife still love me?” “Do my friends still think I’m cool?” And they’re worried about how they’re going to remember everything they need to do, never mind get it done and done well. We women are typically better at multitasking, not that this is a good thing when it comes to the effects on the brain. Most men do better single-tasking, which is actually healthier but can be more stressful when there are a multitude of things that need to get done simultaneously these days.

Hypnosis can Help I know you get the picture. You may, in fact, be one of those men or one of their loved ones who are living in this picture, which is a very uncomfortable place to be. The good news is that hypnosis can absolutely help and can do so far quicker and much easier than many of the other traditional therapies that are available. It’s actually perfectly suited for men, because they don’t really want to talk about things; they want to change things. If you’re a wife or girlfriend, you’ve probably experienced that phenomenon firsthand. You come home and just want to talk to your man about your day and some of the challenges you’ve encountered, and his primary focus is how he can fix it for you. It’s the same for himself, so hypnosis is a perfect fit. There’s a huge desire to just get it fixed fast – which is exactly what hypnosis can do. Regardless of the stressor, hypnosis can help. I’ve worked with countless male clients on clearing blocks to abundance, building self-confidence, overcoming fears of public speaking and fears of conflict; not to mention taming road rage, getting over sexual anxieties, learning how to emotionally connect with their partners and children, improving health by lowering blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol; releasing weight, improving self-care, and even improving their golf game. Whatever they’re struggling with, hypnosis can help because it allows them to tap into the other 90% of their mind’s capacity. It’s extremely self-empowering, which is another thing that men appreciate about the modality.

reservoir where unprocessed emotions from way back have been stored. This occurs in most cases without even having to tap into the emotions it contains and instead monitoring the changes that come as a result and continuing to focus on creating positive shifts until the goals have been reached, or in many cases, exceeded. In the process, many men notice that their fear and confusion around emotions disappears, that they become much more comfortable feeling and working with their emotions, and as a result, all aspects of life get better. It’s tremendously freeing when they cannot only understand what they’re feeling, but why they’re feeling it and then

express it. They are able to make better decisions, because the decisions are made from the heart as well as the head, versus just by the head or as a reaction to the fear that was in the heart. Confidence levels are boosted and when they feel better about themselves, they tend to take better care of themselves in regard to their relationship with food. And because they’re feeling better, many of the destructive coping mechanisms they were using to stuff down those uncomfortable feelings are no longer needed. It’s a win-win all around. I’ve worked with men from all over the globe on every imaginable issue, whether it is divorce recovery, guilt from having an affair in a desperate attempt to feel loved and good enough, performance issues of all kinds, including sports and job or performance of the more personal kind; insomnia, gambling addiction, alcohol abuse, and anger management. You name it, I’ve helped thousands of men connect to their inner power to resolves issues that they thought were unresolvable.

In addition, I’ve helped highly successful men become even more so. Because here’s a secret: The men in this society who are considered the most successful are not free of their own challenges and did not get where they are all by themselves. They were smart enough to know that they needed help. I love this quote by Rona Barrett, “The healthy and strong individual is the one who asks for help when he needs it.” The most successful businessmen have Executive Coaches or better yet, Hypno Coaches to help sort through the clutter and to decide which balls to keep juggling themselves, which balls to delegate to others, and which to let happily drop and roll away.

They recognize that their self-care is paramount to their success, because without health and strength, they cannot reach their full potential, whether it be with help choosing the healthiest mental diet, healing old emotional wounds that when triggered have been their Achilles heel, or working on physical wellbeing by developing healthy habits to control stress, achieve balance, and encourage strength. In addition, hypnosis is phenomenal for tapping into the other 90% of the mind’s capacity to develop the highest level of life and business strategies and navigate the most challenging of “personnel” issues, whether at work or home, and acquire quite the competitive edge. All of which positively affect their personal and professional bottom line. So if you’re a man who has been being “tough” and thinking, “I need to do it all by myself; getting help is a sign of weakness,” please put those thoughts down and pick up the phone instead. And if you’re one of those women who is watching her man suffer, pick up the phone for him; many have before you and most have been thrilled that they did it for their man, their families and their future. A New Definition of Intimacy at The Outlook Lodge

S

ituated northwest of Colorado Springs at an elevation of 7800 feet, Green Mountain Falls has been a resort destination since the late 1800’s. The village rests along the historic Ute Pass, while Pike’s Peak, the area’s most recognizable attraction, rises in the distance. I remember the smell of the fresh air and pine trees and breathtaking views all around as we drove up steep, winding roads to get to The Outlook Lodge. The Outlook Lodge, originally constructed in 1889, has been re-imagined as a private, contemporary escape providing all the necessary creature comforts while maintaining a rustic simplicity. The exterior woodwork and detailing have remained, preserving the timeless charm of its Victorian style.

Numerous hiking trails with breathtaking views are right outside the Lodge’s door, as is the charming center of town. With a flourishing arts community and boundless natural wonder, this mountain retreat provides time to appreciate the untouched American West. Submitted by Dr. Diane Hayden. For more information, visit http:// www.outlookgmf.com.

If you are looking for a place for a family reunion or have a large group of friends seeking a mountain getaway – look no further than The Outlook Lodge. It is unique, peaceful, intimate and amazing. Set quietly amongst the trees, the Lodge offers a wrap-around porch outfitted with rocking chairs to while away the time, as well as a large outdoor fire pit, the perfect gathering place for a cozy and relaxing evening outdoors. Grab your favorite bottle of wine and S’mores for the kids and you’ve got the night made. I imagined having a nostalgic retreat with 10 of my closest friends sitting around the fire reminiscing old stories and making new memories. This is the image of The Outlook Lodge. When you arrive, there is no front desk and actually no staff at all! You find your key to the lodge and your individual room in a lockbox on the porch. In fact, the night we were there we were the ONLY guests. Imagine having a 4,000 sq ft lodge all to yourself with a full kitchen, laundry facilities, picnic area and firepit! Respectful of its authentic architecture, every room in the Outlook Lodge is handsomely appointed using subdued tones and rich textures. All rooms feature hardwood floors, modern and midcentury furnishings, as well as original artworks by American artist, Jason Willaford. The beds were so restful and comfortable, a perfect balance of rustic and contemporary. Deluxe rooms feature custom furnishings, a double-sink vanity (designed especially for the Lodge) and cushioned bay window seating. that

OPTIMIZE YOUR LIFE BY NURTURING YOUR SPINE

By Farrah Garan

W

hat is Buddhism? While it is an umbrella term for various principles and practices all wrapped in a cultural layer, at its core, Buddhism is really about nature. All Buddhist methods have the same ultimate aim—to reveal our true nature of clearness and wisdom. While enlightenment (the realization of our Buddha nature) may feel far away, I think we can agree that any incremental development in clarity and wisdom will improve the quality of our decisions and, therefore, our entire life. I propose that one of the most accessible and practical things you can do to move in this direction is to care for the openness of your spine. To understand how caring for your spine can improve your life, let’s explore principles from Buddhism and Tibetan Medicine. Wisdom Embodied The Tantrayana (Vajrayana) path of Tibetan Buddhism is one of the most direct paths to accomplishing this aim of knowing our nature. It functions like science in that it uses empirical evidence to validate a natural law. In this case, it uses direct experience in the body to achieve realizations of our fundamental nature. In other words, clear awareness isn’t just a state of mind; it’s an embodiment. And we already have everything we need to get there. Just run the experiment and get the results. Tibetan Medicine is a subcategory of Tantrayana. Its principles were developed from the teachings given by the historical Buddha around 900 BC. Both fields are concerned with optimizing the health of the body and mind. While Tibetan Medicine ad30

dresses the functioning of the physical body, Tantra goes deeper and addresses the functioning of the subtle body. The subtle body informs and energizes the physical body, so it is definitely not separate. In both Tantrayana Buddhism and Tibetan Medicine, there is a significant focus on the spine. Our spine is the root of our body. It is the main highway through which neurological communication, blood flow, oxygen and nutrients are transported. Blockages in the spine directly impair organ function and limit communication between the central nervous system and the millions of motor and sensory nerves of the peripheral nervous system. So it is clear why the spine is central in medicine’s sphere of concern. Our spine is also the energy box of our body. It is like a battery. Not only does the current of energy need to remain unobstructed and flowing to be useful, the energy also needs to be recharged periodically so that it doesn’t completely drain. Movement is what promotes the smooth flow of the current. The Subtle Body & Spirituality When the spine is obstructed, we experience emotional imbalance, including heightened stress, fear and anger. When everything is flowing smoothly along the spinal column, we experience more calmness, focus and creativity. To understand how spinal mobility promotes a beneficial state of mind, we enter the realm of the subtle body. According to Tantrayana, our subtle body is our channels, and the wind-energy and essences that move in them. Blocked channels means blocked wind and essence. There is a tremendously intimate connection

between the wind-energy (Tibetan: lung) and consciousness, as well as between the essences and emotions. When the wind is stuck, the mind is stuck. When the wind and essences are flowing, the mind is clear, stable and happy. The goal of Tantrayana goes far beyond health and happiness; its aim is enlightenment. So why is it concerned with the spine? The spinal column holds the key to deep spiritual transformation. Our body is like a map to higher dimensions. There are hidden doors, portals of energy, that when opened catapult us to new levels of awareness and ability. The most important of these hidden doors, or chakras, are along the spinal column. Therefore, cultivating openness in the body changes our consciousness. Reality Check So, now I’d like to ask you: How is the health of your spine? Is it limber and spacious? Or is it becoming hunched, crunched and compacted? If you want to live an optimized life with energy, focus and passion, it is imperative that you start with the spine. There is no excuse for not caring for your spine! There are extremely powerful reasons to do so (whether you are motivated by boosting physical health, longevity, mental clarity, emotional stability, boundless energy or spiritual development) and there are efficient and practical ways to get the job done. If you are not regularly doing something to nurture your spine, then you are neglecting it at your own peril. Either way, a decision is being made. My goal is to motivate you to prioritize the health of your spine and provide you with the tools to take action.

A Practical Method Tantrayana, being an experiential science, contains many great techniques. First, we build a solid foundation by strengthening our physical health with Lu Jong. Once physical blockages are addressed, we implement subtler practices, such as Tsa Lung (train the breath), Tummo and Bliss (train the inner elements of fire and water) and Rigpa (empty nature of the mind). Lu Jong is a series of movements rooted in Tibetan Medicine. It is a comprehensive practice that systematically releases blockages in the spine, joints and vital organs. Its rhythmic movements combined with smooth breathing also calm and focus the mind. It is a very practical method for improving health and happiness. Lu Jong also trains our channels to be supple and open, which have profound spiritual benefits. This is how the body is a vehicle for self-transformation. Take Action You don’t need to take my word for it. Come experience Lu Jong for yourself on Wednesday, June 22, 6 – 8:30 pm at ATMA. I will guide you through these effective movements, which are accessible to all ages and abilities. Who knows? Maybe you will be moved to become a teacher yourself and play a role in sharing this beneficial practice with others. Remember this: Blockages cause suffering at the level of the body and the mind. By opening the blocks in the body (especially along the spine) and unraveling the blocks in our mind (self-limiting beliefs, habitual thought patterns), we reach a new level of optimization, a new perspective from which to conduct our life and fulfill our dreams. You have all the tools, you just need to decide and do. See you June 22nd! Farrah Garan teaches Tibetan movement practices that empower us to cultivate a calm mind, vibrant energy and an open heart, including Lu Jong Healing Yoga, Tog Chöd Sword Dance, and Tsa Lung Breathwork. She received the Tantrayana tradition from her teacher, Tulku Lobsang. Farrah also offers teacher trainings so that more can benefit from these practical methods. The Weight Loss Puzzle Finally Solved!

Excerpts from the new e-book, just released by Drs. Frank Aieta and Diane Hayden

T

rying and failing at losing weight again is just not on your milelong list of to-do’sIlove anymore. And you’re sick of hearing “Oh! You need to go Paleo!” “Try vegan!” “OHHHH! Have you done RAW, yet??” It’s time for something new, something revolutionary, something that REALLY WORKS. This is the first book of its kind and it puts the secrets in your hands. If you’re thinking this is just another book about weight loss… think again! This book will revolutionize the way you think about losing weight…permanently. You see successful weight loss is not about following the latest fad diet or exercise program. It’s not about eating less and exercising more or counting calories until you’re blue in the face. Successful weight loss is about WHO YOU ARE…not WHAT YOU DO. Successful weight loss happens when you finally make the decision that the person you are going to be is a healthy, fit, happy individual…and then everything else falls into place. Yes, there are factors that are critical to losing weight and keeping it off, which we’ll cover in this book – genetics, diet, nutrient deficiencies, hormone imbalances, exercise and sleep, however, all of those are secondary to you making the choice that you are going to be healthy. That’s why the first thing we’re going to talk about is your mindset. If you don’t have the right mindset it won’t matter what you’re trying to accomplish (weight loss, career change, improve finances, happy relationship)…it’s not going to happen. If you don’t learn to understand the power of your thoughts and how they shape your life, you will forever be subconsciously battling against yourself in an effort to make lasting change. The Power of Your Mindset Some people say we have over 60,000 thoughts per day. While I’m not sure there is any research to back that up, and even if we had remotely into the thousands, that’s a lot of brain power. And where is all this thinking getting us….absolutely nowhere. In fact, there is substantial research that shows that our negative thoughts can even harm our body. Is it really possible to improve your health simply by how or what you think, you ask? Intuitively, we’ve all known this to be true, but now research is showing this to be the case through studies in the fields of psychoneuroimmunology and positive thinking. Researchers are finding that what we think about and the emotions related to these thoughts are critical in whether or not we develop diseases or live a long, healthy life. Research from the Mayo Clinic shows health benefits that positive thinking may provide include: 32

Natural Nutmeg - June 2016

• Weight loss • Increased life span • Lower rates of depression • Lower levels of distress • Greater resistance to the common cold • Better psychological and physical well-being • Reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease • Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress It’s unclear why people who engage in positive thinking experience these health benefits, however, one theory is that having a positive outlook enables one to cope better with stressful situations, which reduces the harmful health effects of stress on the body. In addition, positive and optimistic people tend to live healthier lifestyles…they exercise, eat healthy and engage in activities that reduce stress. For the past twenty years, researchers have studied and found that the hypothalamus transforms a thought into neuropeptides and amino acids are released into the bloodstream. This process represents the emotion of a thought and a pattern starts to occur. As this continues over time, your cells become used to these chemical effects and actually crave them. This ultimately creates a self-fulfilling prophecy – what you think about determines who you are. Your mind is constantly talking to you and most of the time it doesn’t have good things to say. If you spend a day or even a few hours just listening to the thoughts inside your head as if it were someone else talking to you, you’ll realize that you just might be living with a maniac. One minute your thoughts are saying one thing and the next they’ve either changed the subject or are contradicting what they just got through saying. How do we live like this? Because most of the time we aren’t even aware of the internal chatter and the effect it has on us. Most of the time we identify with this voice as if it were truly ourselves. But it’s not. There is something deeper inside that is what we’re truly made of that goes beyond the voice in our head. Some call it consciousness or awareness; I like to think of it as our soul. If you can find that place and tap into it, I believe that is where you’ll find your true desires. The problem is that most of us never or rarely tap into it. It’s not easy as you have to get past the crazy lunatic in your head that is talking all the time. Telling you what you should or shouldn’t do, what you should or shouldn’t like, how you should

feel, what you should say, it’s exhausting. Not to mention the fact that this voice can totally turn your life upside down in the blink of an eye. We have to be persistent and take the time to practice getting past it. We do this through meditation, quiet time or silent retreats. The reward is truly understanding who you are.

“I am no longer a diabetic, have normal blood pressure and plan on continuing my present lifestyle forever. 9 months ago when I first saw Dr. Aieta I was a 49 year old man who felt 80, now I’m a 49 year old man that feels 29.... I just can’t understand why the so called expert in the field of diabetes (my endocrinologist) had no clue how to treat me, he just knew how to put me on more useless medication instead of getting to the root of the problem like Dr. A.” ~Marcus C. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

BERNIE

By Bernie Siegel, MD

Don’t Hide Because You’re Different

W

hat would you hang in the lobby of schools and public buildings with a sign over it which reads; “Look at how beautiful and meaningful life is.” If you have been through a major loss or life threatening illness you are far more likely to say a mirror than if you haven’t had that experience. We are all so involved with our imperfections that we lose track of our divine nature and origin.

ficult to step in as I struggle in my attempt to follow them. I learned from my experience that there are times in life where I need to create my own path, let some one assist me when the going was tough, or crawl. When you are willing to face life’s adversities and the obstacles they create you can choose to learn how to climb or stop living. We are all unique and need to find our way through life rather than hide because we are different.

When I spoke before several hundred personal health trainers who were the most attractive and fit group I have ever seen, their responses were: rainbows, baby pictures, or flowers. After several minutes I realized they have a problem with their self image too and that’s probably why they are doing what they are doing. Trying to be perfect...which will never happen. We are all perfectly imperfect to begin with. I finally stopped them and said the answer is a mirror. That created a silent thoughtful moment.

I think that Arielle’s footprints are a guide to all of us as we make our journey through life. I can recall a child with a congenital problem, who was my patient; ask me, “Why am I different?” I answered, “Because it makes you beautiful.” He responded with a knowing smile. Children and animals understand that being complete is not about having the correct number of body parts, but about how we live. A veterinarian I know said she was able to get through body changing surgery by thinking about the dogs she operated on. She said, “I can amputate a leg or jaw and they wake up and lick their owner’s faces. They know they are here to love and be loved and teach us a few things.” We are here to live and learn and see that what is evil is not the difficulty someone must live with, but to not respond with compassion to the person experiencing it.

I recall a young woman admitted to the hospital to be force fed. She was anorexic and starving herself to death. I asked her to draw a picture of herself. When I show people a slide of her drawing and ask why was she admitted to the hospital most yell out, “She’s pregnant.” A few wise health care professionals say, “Anorexic.” Think of what we do to ourselves by being critical of who we are, what we look like and more. Learn from Lassie again. Our pets never request a shampoo or grooming because they just don’t look well or because guests are coming over. So relax and accept your body for the gift it is. The problem is we don’t love our bodies and create much disease and disability because of our dislike of ourselves. The body knows how to heal and tries to protect you and keep you well as best it can. But do you nourish it properly and exercise it and love and respect it as the gift that it is? I doubt most of you do until some disaster strikes. You never hear about Helen Keller complaining. Learn from her, the children and the animals. They know who they are and what makes them complete and it is not the number of parts they have. I just learned of a premature infant born with a malignancy in her foot. Arielle had her foot amputated and home she went after months in the hospital, proud of herself and her body and not fearful of showing off her stump. Her mom has written a book, “Arielle’s Footprint”, because of what she has learned from her. The following is my foreword to her book. Footprints have always fascinated me. Every winter as I walk through the snow, many times I benefit from the footprints of others who have walked before me. At other times their footprints are frozen and dif40

For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel-or Bernie, as he prefers to becalled-needs no introduction. He has touched many lives all overthe Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our Society grapples with today.
